Metal- versus ligand-centered reactivity of a cobalt-phenylenediamide complex with electrophiles

A new series of [CoIII-CF3]n+ complexes supported by a bidentate redox-active ligand is presented. The cationic [Co-CF3]+ complex was first obtained by reacting [CpCo(tBuUreaopda)] (Cp = cyclopentadienyl, opda = o-phenylenediamide) with an electrophilic trifluoromethyl source, for which the redox-active phenylenediamide ligand serves as a 2e- reservoir to generate [CpCp(tBuUreabqdi)(CF3)]+ (bqdi = benzoquinonediimine). Electrochemical studies of [Co-CF3]+ revealed two reversible 1e- reductions. Chemical reduction with 1 or 2 equiv. reducing agent enabled isolation of the neutral and anionic complexes, respectively, where the [CoIII-CF3] bond remains intact in all three oxidation states (n = +1, 0, -1). Structural analysis shows systematic changes to the redox-active ligand backbone upon reduction, consistent with sequential ligand-centered electron transfer in the series [bqdi]0 to [s-bqdi]˙- to [opda]2-. In contrast, the reaction of [CpCo(tBuUreaopda)] with alkyl triflates resulted in ligand-centered alkylation at the ureayl groups instead of the targeted Co-alkyl bond formation, suggesting less favorable bond formation at cobalt and greater nucleophilic accessibility of the ligand compared to the metal center.

Photogenerated chlorine radicals activate C(sp3)-H bonds of alkylbenzenes to access quinazolinones

An Fe-catalyzed visible-light induced condensation of alkylbenzenes with anthranilamides has been developed. Upon irradiation, the trivalent iron complex could generate chlorine radicals, which successfully abstracted the hydrogen of benzylic C-H bonds to form benzyl radicals. And these benzyl radicals were converted into oxygenated products under air conditions, which subsequently reacted with anthranilamides for the synthesis of quinazolinones.

Bi-Catalyzed Trifluoromethylation of C(sp2)-H Bonds under Light

We disclose a Bi-catalyzed C-H trifluoromethylation of (hetero)arenes using CF3SO2Cl under light irradiation. The catalytic method permits the direct functionalization of various heterocycles bearing distinct functional groups. The structural and computational studies suggest that the process occurs through an open-shell redox manifold at bismuth, comprising three unusual elementary steps for a main group element. The catalytic cycle starts with rapid oxidative addition of CF3SO2Cl to a low-valent Bi(I) catalyst, followed by a light-induced homolysis of Bi(III)-O bond to generate a trifluoromethyl radical upon extrusion of SO2, and is closed with a hydrogen-atom transfer to a Bi(II) radical intermediate.

Catalytic C-H Trifluoromethylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes via Visible Light Photoexcitation of a Co(III)-CF3 Complex

A cobalt photocatalyst for direct trifluoromethylation of (hetero)arene C(sp2)-H bonds is described and shown to operate via visible light activation of a Co-CF3 intermediate, which functions as a combined chromophore and organometallic reaction center. Chemical oxidations of previously reported (OCO)Co complexes containing a redox-active [OCO] pincer ligand afford a Co-CF3 complex two oxidation states above Co(II). Computational and spectroscopic studies are consistent with formulation of the product as [(OCO•)CoIII(CF3)(THF)(OTf)] (II) containing an open-shell [OCO•]1- radical ligand bound to a S = 0 Co(III) center. II is thermodynamically stable, but exposure to blue (440 nm) light induces Co-CF3 bond homolysis and release of •CF3, which is trapped by radical acceptors including TEMPO•, (hetero)arenes, or the radical [OCO•] ligand in II. The latter comprises a competitive degradation pathway, which is overcome under catalytic conditions by using excess substrate. Accordingly, generation of II from the reaction of [(OCO)CoIIL] (III) (L = THF, MeCN) with Umemoto's dibenzothiophenium trifluoromethylating reagent (1) followed by photolytic Co-CF3 bond activation completes a photoredox catalytic cycle for C-H (hetero)arene trifluoromethylation utilizing visible light. Electronic structure and photophysical studies, including time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, suggest that Co-CF3 bond homolysis at II occurs via an ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) (OCO0)CoII(CF3) state, revealing ligand redox activity as a critical design feature and establishing design principles for the use of base metal chromophores for selectivity in photoredox bond activations occurring via free radical intermediates.

Activation of SF5CF3 by the N-Heterocyclic Carbene SIMes

The greenhouse gas SF5CF3 was photochemically activated with SIMes (1,3-Bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene) to give 1,3-dimesityl-2,2-difluoroimidazolidine (SIMesF2), and 1,3-dimesitylimidazolidine-2-sulfide, as well as the trifluoromethylated carbene derivative 1,3-dimesityl-2-fluoro-2-trifluoromethylimidazolidine. CF3 radicals, as well as SF4, serve presumably as intermediates of the conversions. In addition, the photochemical activation of SF5CF3 was performed in the presence of triphenylphosphine. The formation of triphenyldifluorophosphorane and triphenylphosphine sulfide was observed.

Regioselective C-H Trifluoromethylation and Its Related Reactions of (Hetero)aromatic Compounds

Fluorinated functional groups, including trifluoromethyl group, play important roles in the development of drugs, agrochemicals, and organic functional materials. Therefore, the development of highly effective and practical reactions to introduce fluorinated functional groups into (hetero)aromatic compounds is highly desirable. We have achieved several regioselective C-H trifluoromethylation and related reactions by electrophilic and nucleophilic activation of six-membered heteroaromatic compounds and steric protection of aromatic compounds. These reactions proceed in good to excellent yields, even on a gram scale, with high functional group tolerance, and are applicable to the regioselective trifluoromethylation of drug molecules. In this personal account, the background of the introduction reactions of fluorinated functional groups, our reaction designs to achieve regioselective C-H trifluoromethylation and the related reactions of (hetero)aromatic compounds are explained.

Reduction of SF5CF3via iridium catalysis: radical trifluoromethylation of aromatics

The greenhouse gas SF₅CF₃ acts as CF₃ source for the photocatalytic trifluoromethylation of arenes on using [Ir(dtbbpy)(ppy)₂]PF₆ (4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, ppy = 2-phenylpyridine) as catalyst. The trifluoromethylation of C₆D₆ in the presence of 1-octanol results in the concomitant generation of 1-fluorooctane, presumably by intermediate SF₄.

Ligand-free nickel catalyzed perfluoroalkylation of arenes and heteroarenes

We describe a "ligand-free" Ni-catalyzed perfluoroalkylation of heteroarenes to produce a diverse array of trfiluoromethyl, pentafluoroethyl and heptafluoropropyl adducts. Catalysis proceeds at room temperature via a radical pathway. The catalytic protocol is distinguished by its simplicity, and its wide scope demonstrates the potential in the late-stage functionalization of drug analogues and peptides.

Redox-Switchable Behavior of Transition-Metal Complexes Supported by Amino-Decorated N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The coordination chemistry of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand IMes^(NMe2)2, derived from the well-known IMes ligand by substitution of the carbenic heterocycle with two dimethylamino groups, was investigated with d⁶ [Mn(I), Fe(II)], d⁸ [Rh(I)], and d¹⁰ [Cu(I)] transition-metal centers. The redox behavior of the resulting organometallic complexes was studied through a combined experimental/theoretical study, involving electrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. While the complexes [CuCl(IMes^(NMe2)2)], [RhCl(COD)(IMes^(NMe2)2)], and [FeCp(CO)₂ (IMes^(NMe2)2)](BF₄) exhibit two oxidation waves, the first oxidation wave is fully reversible but only for the first complex the second oxidation wave is reversible. The mono-oxidation event for these complexes occurs on the NHC ligand, with a spin density mainly located on the diaminoethylene NHC-backbone, and has a dramatic effect on the donating properties of the NHC ligand. Conversely, as the Mn(I) center in the complex [MnCp(CO)₂ ((IMes^(NMe2)2)] is easily oxidizable, the latter complex is first oxidized on the metal center to form the corresponding cationic Mn(II) complex, and the NHC ligand is oxidized in a second reversible oxidation wave.

Coupling of CO2 and epoxides catalysed by novel N-fused mesoionic carbene complexes of nickel(II)

We report the syntheses of two rigid mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligands with a carbazole backbone via an intramolecular Finkelstein-cyclisation cascade and investigate their coordination behavior towards nickel(II) acetate. Despite the nickel(II) carbene complexes 4a,b showing only minor differences in their chemical composition, they display curious differences in their chemical properties, e.g. solubility. Furthermore, the potential of these novel MIC complexes in the coupling of carbon dioxide and epoxides as well as the differences in reactivity compared to classical NHC-derived complexes are evaluated.

Photoinduced Trifluoromethylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes Catalyzed by High-Valent Nickel Complexes

We describe a series of air-stable Ni^III complexes supported by a simple, robust naphthyridine-based ligand. Access to the high-valent oxidation state is enabled by the CF₃ ligands on the nickel, while the naphthyridine exhibits either a monodentate or bidentate coordination mode that depends on the oxidation state and sterics, and enables facile aerobic oxidation of Ni^II to Ni^III . These Ni^III complexes act as efficient catalysts for photoinduced C(sp² )-H bond trifluoromethylation reactions of (hetero)arenes using versatile synthetic protocols. This blue LED light-mediated catalytic protocol proceeds via a radical pathway and demonstrates potential in the late-stage functionalization of drug analogs.

Visible-Light-Induced Homolysis of Earth-Abundant Metal-Substrate Complexes: A Complementary Activation Strategy in Photoredox Catalysis

The mainstream applications of visible-light photoredox catalysis predominately involve outer-sphere single-electron transfer (SET) or energy transfer (EnT) processes of precious metal RuII or IrIII complexes or of organic dyes with low photostability. Earth-abundant metal-based Mn Ln -type (M=metal, Ln =polydentate ligands) complexes are rapidly evolving as alternative photocatalysts as they offer not only economic and ecological advantages but also access to the complementary inner-sphere mechanistic modes, thereby transcending their inherent limitations of ultrashort excited-state lifetimes for use as effective photocatalysts. The generic process, termed visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH), entails the formation of suitable light-absorbing ligated metal-substrate complexes (Mn Ln -Z; Z=substrate) that can undergo homolytic cleavage to generate Mn-1 Ln and Z. for further transformations.

Regioselective C-H Trifluoromethylation of Aromatic Compounds by Inclusion in Cyclodextrins

A regioselective radical C-H trifluoromethylation of aromatic compounds was developed using cyclodextrins (CDs) as additives. The C-H trifluoromethylation proceeded with high regioselectivity to afford the product in good yield, even on the gram scale. In the presence of CDs, some substrates underwent a single trifluoromethylation selectively, whereas mixtures of single- and double-trifluoromethylated products were formed in the absence of the CD. ¹H NMR experiments indicated that the regioselectivity was controlled by the inclusion of a substrate inside the CD cavity.

Palladium-Catalyzed C2-Regioselective Perfluoroalkylation of the Free (NH)-Heteroarenes

A highly regioselective and atom-efficient strategy for the construction of fused free (NH) heteroarenes through a palladium-catalyzed perfluoroalkyl insertion reaction has been accomplished. This protocol employed multiple iodofluoroalkanes as practical and available perfluoroalkyl sources to provide an operationally simple and versatile route for the synthesis of perfluoroalkylated indoles. Moreover, indoles without the assistance of guide groups were utilized as substrates, achieving C(sp²)-H site-selective functionalization of indoles in yields up to 95%. Furthermore, this protocol was also used for late-stage C2 perfluoroalkylation of bioactive compounds such as auxin, tryptophan, and melatonin analogues.

Facile H/D Exchange at (Hetero)Aromatic Hydrocarbons Catalyzed by a Stable Trans-Dihydride N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Iron Complex

Earth-abundant metal pincer complexes have played an important role in homogeneous catalysis during the last ten years. Yet, despite intense research efforts, the synthesis of iron PC_carbeneP pincer complexes has so far remained elusive. Here we report the synthesis of the first PC_NHCP functionalized iron complex [(PC_NHCP)FeCl₂] (1) and the reactivity of the corresponding trans-dihydride iron(II) dinitrogen complex [(PC_NHCP)Fe(H)₂N₂)] (2). Complex 2 is stable under an atmosphere of N₂ and is highly active for hydrogen isotope exchange at (hetero)aromatic hydrocarbons under mild conditions (50 °C, N₂). With benzene-d₆ as the deuterium source, easily reducible functional groups such as esters and amides are well tolerated, contributing to the overall wide substrate scope (e.g., halides, ethers, and amines). DFT studies suggest a complex assisted σ-bond metathesis pathway for C(sp²)–H bond activation, which is further discussed in this study.

Selectivity in the Addition of Electron Deficient Radicals to the C2 Position of Indoles

The addition of electron deficient radicals to the C2 position of indoles has been described in the literature as opposed to electrophilic addition at the C3 position. Density functional theory calculations were used to understand the switch in regioselectivity from C3 to C2 for indole to undergo radical additions. Electron deficient radicals have a lower barrier for reaction at C2 and a lower energy radical intermediate that benefits from benzylic radical stabilization. Trifluoromethyl radical addition has a lower energy barrier than acetonitrile radical, and the C3 addition transition state is just 0.8 kcal/mol higher than C2. This is supported by experimental observations.

NHC Core Pincer Ligands Exhibiting Two Anionic Coordinating Extremities

The chemistry of NHCcore pincer ligands of LX₂ type bearing two pending arms, identical or not, whose coordinating center is anionic in nature, is here reviewed. In this family, the negative charge of the coordinating atoms can be brought either by a carbon atom via a phosphonium ylide (R₃P⁺-CR₂^-) or by a heteroatom through amide (R₂N^-), oxide (RO^-), or thio(seleno)oxide (RS^-, RSe^-) donor functionalities. Through selected examples, the synthetic methods, coordination properties, and applications of such tridentate systems are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the donor ends in the chemical behavior of these species.

Base-Mediated Tunable Synthesis of 2-Trifluoromethylated Furans and Dihydrofuranols: Extraordinary Stable in Sulfuric Acid

2-Trifluoromethylated furans and dihydrofuranols were tunably synthesized from the cyclization of β-ketonitriles with 3-bromo-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone mediated by bases. In addition, dehydration of dihydrofuranol compounds with concentrated sulfuric acid gave another 2-(trifluoromethyl)furans isomer. The developed methodology exhibits an excellent functional group tolerance for both aromatic and aliphatic β-ketonitriles.

3d Transition Metals for C-H Activation

C-H activation has surfaced as an increasingly powerful tool for molecular sciences, with notable applications to material sciences, crop protection, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Despite major advances, the vast majority of these C-H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. Given the cost-effective and sustainable nature of earth-abundant first row transition metals, the development of less toxic, inexpensive 3d metal catalysts for C-H activation has gained considerable recent momentum as a significantly more environmentally-benign and economically-attractive alternative. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview on first row transition metal catalysts for C-H activation until summer 2018.

Photoexcited state chemistry of metal-oxygen complexes

Recent advances on the excited state chemistry of metal-oxygen synthetic complexes based on earth-abundant metals such as copper, cobalt, and manganese are reviewed to show a much enhanced reactivity of the photoexcited states as compared with their relative ground states. Mononuclear copper(ii)-superoxide and dinuclear copper(ii)-peroxo complexes underwent copper-oxygen bond cleavage, dioxygen release, and copper(i)/dioxygen rebinding upon photoexcitation at low temperature. Photoirradiation of the cobalt-oxygen compound [(TAML)CoIV(O)]2- (6) (TAML = tetraamidomacrocyclic ligand) at 5 °C yielded a cobalt-oxygen excited state with 0.6(1) ns lifetime, showing a high reactivity in the bimolecular electron-transfer oxidations of m-xylene and anisole. An extremely long-lived excited state was generated upon photoexcitation of a manganese(iv)-oxo complex binding two Sc(OTf)3 molecules, which enabled the hydroxylation of benzene.

Photoactive Complexes with Earth-Abundant Metals

In this invited Perspective, recent developments and possible future directions of research on photoactive coordination compounds made from nonprecious transition metal elements will be discussed. The focus is on conceptually new, structurally well-characterized complexes with excited-state lifetimes between 10 ps and 1 ms in fluid solution for possible applications in photosensitizing, light-harvesting, luminescence and catalysis. The key metal elements considered herein are Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Mo, W and Ce in various oxidation states equipped with diverse ligands, giving access to long-lived excited states via a range of fundamentally different types of electronic transitions. Research performed in this area over the past five years demonstrated that a much broader spectrum of metal complexes than what was long considered relevant exhibits useful photophysics and photochemistry.
