Elasticity-Dependent Fast Underwater Adhesion Demonstrated by Macroscopic Supramolecular Assembly

Macroscopic Self-Assembly Realized by Polymer Brush─A Thickness-Dependent Rule for Rapid Wet Adhesion

Macroscopic self-assembly of µm-to-mm components (dimension from 100 µm to millimeters), is meaningful to realize the concept of "self-assembly at all scales" and to understand interfacial phenomena such as adhesion, self-healing, and adsorption. However, self-assembly at this length scale is different from molecular self-assembly due to limited collision chances and binding capacity between components. Long-time contact between components is requisite to realize µm-to-mm assembly. Even though the recent idea of adding a compliant coating to enhance the molecular binding capacity is effective for such self-assembly, a trade-off between coating thickness (several micrometers) and assembly efficiency exists. Here a new compliant coating of surface-initiated polymer brush to address the above paradox by both realizing fast assembly and reducing the coating thickness to ≈40 nm by two magnitudes is demonstrated. Millimeter-sized quartz cubes are used as components and grafted with oppositely charged polyelectrolyte brushes, enabling assembly in water by electrostatic attraction and disassembly in NaCl solutions. A rule of thickness-dependent assembly chance is obtained and understood by in situ force measurements and a multivalent theory. The polymer brush strategy pushes the thickness limit of requisite compliant coating to the nanoscale for fast µm-to-mm self-assembly and provides insights into rapid wet adhesion.

Additive-assisted macroscopic self-assembly and control of the shape of assemblies based on host-guest interaction

In these decades, considerable attention has focused on supramolecular polymers due to their unique structures and properties. More recently, macroscopic supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing interest from not only biologists but also materials scientists inspired by the sophisticated structures and functions of living organisms. Since the functions of supramolecular polymers are strongly dependent on their shape, control of the shape is an important issue in controlling the functions of supramolecular polymers. However, the control of shape in macroscopic supramolecular assemblies has not yet been sufficiently investigated. Previously, we studied the macroscopic self-assembly behavior of super absorbent polymer (SAP) microparticles modified with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and adamantane (Ad) residues (βCD(x)-SAP and Ad(y)-SAP microparticles, where x and y are the mol% contents of βCD and Ad residues, respectively). More elongated assemblies were formed at higher y, indicating that the shape of assemblies can be controlled by varying the interaction strength. The noteworthy is that 1-adamantanamine hydrochloride (AdNH3Cl) assisted the formation of assemblies from βCD(x)-SAP and Ad(y)-SAP microparticles, indicating that AdNH3Cl acts as a chemical stimulus for macroscopic assemblies of βCD(x)-SAP and Ad(y)-SAP microparticles. In this study, we have thus studied the assembling behavior of βCD(x)-SAP microparticles with Ad(y)-SAP microparticles and unmodified SAP microparticles assisted by AdNH3Cl, as well as the shape of the resulting macroscopic assemblies. AdNH3Cl assisted the formation of assemblies from βCD(16.2)-SAP and Ad(15.1)-SAP microparticles, in which AdNH3Cl crosslinked the SAP microparticles through the formation of inclusion complexes of βCD residues with the Ad residue and the electrostatic interaction of ammonium and carboxylate residues. Assemblies of βCD(26.7)-SAP and unmodified SAP microparticles were formed at the concentrations of AdNH3Cl ([AdNH3Cl]0) higher than a certain level (ca. 0.05 mM). The aspect ratio (a/b) of assemblies showed a maximum at [AdNH3Cl]0 ~ 0.10 mM, indicating that the chemical stimulus, i.e., addition of AdNH3Cl, controls the shape of assemblies formed from βCD(26.7)-SAP and unmodified SAP microparticles. This study suggests that other stimuli, e.g., heat, pH, light, redox, and force, can be utilized to control the shape of macroscopic assemblies based on supramolecular interactions.

Photocontrolled Reversible Solid-Fluid Transitions of Azopolymer Nanocomposites for Intelligent Nanomaterials

Intelligent polymer nanocomposites are multicomponent and multifunctional materials that show immense potential across diverse applications. However, to exhibit intelligent traits such as adaptability, reconfigurability and dynamic properties, these materials often require a solvent or heating environment to facilitate the mobility of polymer chains and nanoparticles, rendering their applications in everyday settings impractical. Here intelligent azopolymer nanocomposites that function effectively in a solvent-free, room-temperature environment based on photocontrolled reversible solid-fluid transitions via switching flow temperatures (Tfs) are shown. A range of nanocomposites is synthesized through the grafting of Au nanoparticles, Au nanorods, quantum dots, or superparamagnetic nanoparticles with photoresponsive azopolymers. Leveraging the reversible cis-trans photoisomerization of azo groups, the azopolymer nanocomposites transition between solid (Tf above room temperature) and fluid (Tf below room temperature) states. Such photocontrolled reversible solid-fluid transitions empower the rewriting of nanopatterns, correction of nanoscale defects, reconfiguration of complex multiscale structures, and design of intelligent optical devices. These findings highlight Tf-switchable polymer nanocomposites as promising candidates for the development of intelligent nanomaterials operative in solvent-free, room-temperature conditions.

Nature-inspired adhesive systems

Many organisms in nature thrive in intricate habitats through their unique bio-adhesive surfaces, facilitating tasks such as capturing prey and reproduction. It's important to note that the remarkable adhesion properties found in these natural biological surfaces primarily arise from their distinct micro- and nanostructures and/or chemical compositions. To create artificial surfaces with superior adhesion capabilities, researchers delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms of these captivating adhesion phenomena to draw inspiration. This article provides a systematic overview of various biological surfaces with different adhesion mechanisms, focusing on surface micro- and nanostructures and/or chemistry, offering design principles for their artificial counterparts. Here, the basic interactions and adhesion models of natural biological surfaces are introduced first. This will be followed by an exploration of research advancements in natural and artificial adhesive surfaces including both dry adhesive surfaces and wet/underwater adhesive surfaces, along with relevant adhesion characterization techniques. Special attention is paid to stimulus-responsive smart artificial adhesive surfaces with tunable adhesive properties. The goal is to spotlight recent advancements, identify common themes, and explore fundamental distinctions to pinpoint the present challenges and prospects in this field.

Application of Organic Gel on Skin Realized by Hydrogel/Organic Gel Adhesion

Diversity in solvent selection bestows the organic gel with appealing characteristics embracing antidrying, anti-icing, and antifouling abilities. However, organic gel, subjected to the "toxic" inherent property of solvent, is not able to be manipulated on skin. Herein, introducing the hydrogel layer amid organic gel and skin is envisaged to realize application of organic gel on skin. Hydrogel, inserted as the medium layer, works for the coupling role between skin and organic gel, also avoids the direct contact of organic gel toward skin. First, hydrogel system composed of acrylic acid is fabricated, meanwhile organic gel is prepared employing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol (EG) as solvent. Organic gel is able to adhere to hydrogel by hydrogen bonding resulting from carboxyl groups of polyacrylic acid chains and hydroxyl groups occurring on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or EG. Additionally, hydrogen bonding enables the hydrogel to be firmly attached to skin, thus organic gel/hydrogel/skin assembly is produced. The further application of organic gel is exploited by incorporating stimuli-responsive dyes including spiropyran and rhodamine derivative.

Reconfiguring hydrogel assemblies using a photocontrolled metallopolymer adhesive for multiple customized functions

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels with programmable shape changes are promising materials for soft robots, four-dimensional printing, biomedical devices and artificial intelligence systems. However, these applications require the fabrication of hydrogels with complex, heterogeneous and reconfigurable structures and customizable functions. Here we report the fabrication of hydrogel assemblies with these features by reversibly gluing hydrogel units using a photocontrolled metallopolymer adhesive. The metallopolymer adhesive firmly attached individual hydrogel units via metal-ligand coordination and polymer chain entanglement. Hydrogel assemblies containing temperature- and pH-responsive hydrogel units showed controllable shape changes and motions in response to these external stimuli. To reconfigure their structures, the hydrogel assemblies were disassembled by irradiating the metallopolymer adhesive with light; the disassembled hydrogel units were then reassembled using the metallopolymer adhesive with heating. The shape change and structure reconfiguration abilities allow us to reprogramme the functions of hydrogel assemblies. The development of reconfigurable hydrogel assemblies using reversible adhesives provides a strategy for designing intelligent materials and soft robots with user-defined functions.

Chemical Design of Supramolecular Reversible Adhesives for Promising Applications

Supramolecular reversible adhesives have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in various fields. These adhesives exhibit remarkable properties such as reversible adhesion, self-healing, and high flexibility. This concept aims to present a comprehensive overview of the current research progress in developing supramolecular reversible adhesives. Firstly, the fundamentals of supramolecular chemistry and the principles underlying the design and synthesis of reversible adhesive systems are discussed. Next, the concept focuses on characterizing the reversible adhesion strength of supramolecular adhesive systems that have been developed. The adhesion performance of supramolecular reversible adhesives is summarized, highlighting their unique characteristics and promising applications. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives in the field of supramolecular reversible adhesives are discussed. The comprehensive overview provided in this concept aims to inspire further research and innovation in this exciting field.

Hydrogel Rivet with Unidirectional Shape Morphing for Flexible Mechanical Assembly

Integrating diverse materials and functions into highly additive produce has piqued global interest due to the increasing demands of intelligent soft robotics. Nevertheless, existing assembly techniques, especially supramolecular assembly which heavily rely on precise chemical design and specific recognition, may prove inadequate when confronted with diverse external demands. Inspired by the traditional mechanical assembly, rivet connection, herein, a thermo-responsive hydrogel with unidirectional shape-morphing is fabricated and a stable mechanical assembly is constructed by emulating the rivet connection mechanism. This system employed poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) [P(AAm-co-AAc)] to induce continuous swelling and hexylamine-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-C6) as a molecular switch to control the swelling process. The hydrogel rivet, initially threaded through pre-fabricated hollows in two components. Subsequently, upon the disassociation of alkane chains the molecular switch would activate, inducing swelling and stable mechanical assembly via anchor structures. Moreover, to enhance the assembly strength, knots are introduced to enhance assembly strength, guiding localized stress release for programmed deformations. Additionally, the system can be remotely controlled using near-infrared light (NIR) by incorporating photo-thermal nanoparticles. This work presents a universal and efficient strategy for constructing stable mechanical assemblies without compromising overall softness, offering significant potential for the fabrication of integrated soft robots.

Nature-Inspired Wet Drug Delivery Platforms

Nature has created various organisms with unique chemical components and multi-scale structures (e.g., foot proteins, toe pads, suckers, setose gill lamellae) to achieve wet adhesion functions to adapt to their complex living environments. These organisms can provide inspirations for designing wet adhesives with mediated drug release behaviors in target locations of biological surfaces. They exhibit conformal and enhanced wet adhesion, addressing the bottleneck of weaker tissue interface adhesion in the presence of body fluids. Herein, it is focused on the research progress of different wet adhesion and bioinspired fabrications, including adhesive protein-based adhesion and inspired adhesives (e.g., mussel adhesion); capillarity and Stefan adhesion and inspired adhesive surfaces (e.g., tree frog adhesion); suction-based adhesion and inspired suckers (e.g., octopus' adhesion); interlocking and friction-based adhesion and potential inspirations (e.g., mayfly larva and teleost adhesion). Other secreted protein-induced wet adhesion is also reviewed and various suckers for other organisms and their inspirations. Notably, one representative application scenario of these bioinspired wet adhesives is highlighted, where they function as efficient drug delivery platforms on target tissues and/or organs with requirements of both controllable wet adhesion and optimized drug release. Finally, the challenges of these bioinspired wet drug delivery platforms in the future is presented.

Precise and selective macroscopic assembly of a dual lock-and-key structured hydrogel

Macroscopic assembly offers immense potential for constructing complex systems due to the high design flexibility of the building blocks. In such assembly systems, hydrogels are promising candidates for building blocks due to their versatile chemical compositions and ease of property tuning. However, two major challenges must be addressed to facilitate application in a broader context: the precision of assembly and the quantity of orthogonally matching pairs must both be increased. Although previous studies have attempted to address these challenges, none have successfully dealt with both simultaneously. Here, we propose topology-based design criteria for the selective assembly of hydrogel building blocks. By introducing the dual lock-and-key structures, we demonstrate highly precise assembly exclusively between the matching pairs. We establish principles for selecting multiple orthogonally matching pairs and achieve selective assembly involving simple one-to-one matching and complex assemblies with multiple orthogonal matching points. Moreover, by harnessing hydrogel tunability and the abundance of matching pairs, we synthesize complementary single-stranded structures for programmable assembly and successfully assemble them in the correct order. Finally, we demonstrate a hydrogel-based self-assembled logic gate system, including a YES gate, an OR gate, and an AND gate. The output is generated only when the corresponding inputs are provided according to each logic.

Linear and ring polypeptides complexed with oppositely charged surfactants: the cohesion of the complexes as revealed in atomistic simulations

The use of linear supercharged unfolded polypeptides (SUPs) and oppositely charged surfactants in aqueous solution has demonstrated impressive adhesive properties. These substances possess biocompatibility, biodegradability and other necessary properties for practical application as a biomedical glue in wound repair. The success of these substances, coupled with limited knowledge about such systems, provides hope for enhancing the performance of the final product. One potential approach involves altering the topology of the polypeptide chain. In this article, we conduct a comparative analysis to examine the behavior of the ring and linear chains of a polypeptide in aqueous solution. This analysis utilizes full-atomic computer modeling to monitor the properties of the chains. We investigate the temperature dependence of the shape and size of individual polypeptides in the solution, as well as the formation of complexes via mixing the polypeptide chains with oppositely charged sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) surfactant molecules in a stoichiometric ratio. Additionally, we explore the cohesive properties of the resulting complex through power experiments involving the extraction of single polypeptide chains out of the SUP-SDBS complexes.

Polyelectrolyte chain conformation matters in macroscopic supramolecular self-assembly

We demonstrate molecular-conformation-dependent macroscopic supramolecular self-assembly (MSA) driven by electrostatic interactions. Evidence from single molecular force spectroscopy reveals that polyelectrolytes modified on MSA component surfaces make MSA possible with a loop conformation, while those with a flat conformation lead to no assembly, which is attributed to distinct molecular mobility. We believe that this finding is also applicable in fundamental phenomena such as surface adsorption and adhesion regarding polymers.

A Photocured Bio-based Shape Memory Thermoplastics for Reversible Wet Adhesion

Development of reversible wet or underwater adhesives remains a grand challenge. Because weakened intermolecular interactions by water molecules or/and low effective contact area cause poor interface to the wet surfaces, which significantly decreases adhesive strength. Herein, a new photocured, bio-based shape memory polymer (SMP) that shows both chemical and structural wet adhesion to various types of surfaces is developed. The SMP is polymerized from three monomers mainly from bio-sources to form linear polymer chains dangled with hydrophobic side chains. The hydrogen acceptor and donor groups in the chains form hydrogen bonding with the surfaces, which is protected by the hydrophobic chains in the interface. The SMP shows tunable phase transition temperature (Tg) of 17-38 °C. In a rubbery state above Tg, the adhesive forms conformable contact with the targeted surfaces. Below Tg, a transition to a glassy state locks the conformed shapes to largely increase the effective contact area. As a result, the adhesive exhibits long-term underwater adhesion of > 15 days with the best adhesion strength of ~ 0.9 MPa. Its applications in leak repair, underwater on-skin sensors were demonstrated. This new, general strategy would pave avenues to designing bio-based, long-lasting, and reversible adhesives from renewable feedstocks for widespread applications.

Cyclic Macroscopic Assembly and Disassembly Driven by Ionic Strength Fuel: A Waste-Free Approach

Nonequilibrium assembling systems developed so far have relied on chemical fuels to drive the programmable pH cycles, redox reactions, and metastable bond formations. However, these methods often result in the unwanted accumulation of chemical waste. Herein, we present a novel strategy for achieving cyclic and waste-free nonequilibrium assembly and disassembly of macroscopic hydrogels, utilizing an ionic strength-mediated approach. Our strategy involves using ammonium carbonate as a chemical fuel to temporally regulate the attractions between oppositely charged hydrogels via ionic strength-controlled charge screening and hydrogel elasticity changes. This chemical fuel effectively mediates the assembly/disassembly processes and prevents waste accumulation, as ammonium carbonate can completely decompose into volatile chemical waste. The cyclic and reversible assembly process can be achieved without significant damping due to the self-clearance mechanism, as long as the chemical fuel is repeatedly supplied. This concept holds promise for creating macroscopic and microscopic nonequilibrium systems and self-adaptive materials.

Robust Electrostatically Interactive Hydrogel Coatings for Macroscopic Supramolecular Assembly via Rapid Wet Adhesion

A macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) refers to non-covalent interactions between building blocks over a micrometer scale, which provides insights into bio-/wet adhesion, self-healing, and so on and new fabrication strategies to heterogeneous structures and bio-scaffolds. The key to realize the MSA of rigid materials is pre-modifying a compliant coating known as a "flexible spacing coating" beneath the interactive moieties. However, available coatings are limited to polyelectrolyte multilayers with shortcomings of tedious fabrication, weak adhesion to substrates, susceptibility to external reagents, and so on. Here, we develop a facile method to induce a new "flexible spacing coating" of a poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel with electrostatic interactions to achieve MSA of diverse rigid materials (quartz, metal, rubber, and plastics). Selective self-assembly of positive-negative charged surfaces is observed by the naked eye under 3 min of shaking in water, providing strategies to rapid wet adhesion. The interfacial binding force between positive-negative interacted surfaces is 1018.1 ± 299.2 N/m², which is over two magnitudes larger than that of control groups, that is, positive-positive (24.4 ± 10.0 N/m²) and negative-negative (67.5 ± 16.7 N/m²) interacted surfaces. In situ force measurements and control experiments of identically charged building blocks have strongly supported the improved binding strength and chemical selectivity between interactive building blocks. The coating is advantageous with a simple fabrication, strong adhesion to materials, robust solvent tolerance to assembly solutions, and feasibility of photo-patterning. We envision that the above strategy would broaden the material choices of flexible spacing coatings for efficient MSA and new methods for rapid interfacial adhesion.

Multifunctional Underwater Adhesive Film Enabled by a Single-Component Poly(ionic liquid)

Tremendous efforts have been devoted to exploiting synthetic wet adhesives for real-life applications. However, developing low-cost, robust, and multifunctional wet adhesive materials remains a considerable challenge. Herein, a wet adhesive composed of a single-component poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) that enables fast and robust underwater adhesion is reported. The PIL adhesive film possesses excellent stretchability and flexibility, enabling its anchoring on target substrates regardless of deformation and water scouring. Surface force measurements show the PIL can achieve a maximum adhesion of 56.7 mN·m^-1 on diverse substrates (both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates) in aqueous media, within ∼30 s after being applied. The adhesion mechanisms of the PIL were revealed via the force measurements, and its robust wet adhesive capacity was ascribed to the synergy of different non-covalent interactions, such as of hydrogen bonding, cation-π, electrostatic, and van der Waals interactions. Surprisingly, this PIL adhesive film exhibited impressive underwater sound absorption capacity. The absorption coefficient of a 0.7 mm-thick PIL film to 4-30 kHz sound waves could be as high as 0.80-0.92. This work reports a multifunctional PIL wet adhesive that has promising applications in many areas and provides deep insights into interfacial interaction mechanisms underlying the wet adhesion capability of PILs.

Macroscopic Supramolecular Assembly of Rigid Building Blocks Facilitated by Layer-By-Layer Assembled Microgel Film

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) of building blocks larger than 1 μm provides new methodology for fabrication of functional supramolecular materials and a platform for mechanism investigation of interfacial phenomena. Most reports on MSA are restricted to soft hydrogels, and supramolecular groups can be directly integrated into a hydrogel matrix to generate sufficient attraction for maintaining macroscopic assemblies. For non-hydrogel stiff building blocks, two layer-by-layer modification processes consisting of flexible spacing coating and additional interacting groups are necessary to enable MSA, which is laborious and time-consuming. Approaches for highly efficient MSA based on flexible spacing coating are desired. In this work, MSA of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) building blocks is demonstrated by inducing microgel films that serve as both flexible spacing coating and surface functional groups, thus avoiding a two-step LbL modification process. By the varying bilayer number of microgel films, the MSA probability of modified PDMS increases from 54% at 3 bilayers to 100% at 6 bilayers. Control experiments and in situ force measurement strongly support the obtained MSA results and verify the dominant role of the microgel film as a flexible spacing coating and a supramolecularly interactive layer in achieving MSA. Moreover, the underlying mechanism is interpreted as low Young's modulus microgel films rendering surface groups highly mobile to enhance the multivalent interfacial binding. Taken together, this work has demonstrated the feasibility of MSA of rigid building blocks assisted by microgel films as flexible spacing coating and supramolecularly interactive layer simultaneously, which may extend the application fields of microgel materials to interfacial adhesion and advanced manufacturing with MSA methodology.

Highly stretchable, self-healing elastomer hydrogel with universal adhesion driven by reversible cross-links and protein enhancement

Engineered hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and multi-functionality have great potential as soft electronic skins, tissue substitutes and flexible robotic joints. However, it has been a challenge to construct multifunctional hydrogels, especially when integrating high stretchability, toughness and strength, low hysteresis, good self-healing and adhesion abilities into a hydrogel system simultaneously. Here, we successfully developed a structural hydrogel composed of a reversible covalently cross-link-based poly-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)acrylamide (PHEMAA) network and available plastically deformable casein micelles. Such a design enabled the reversible covalent cross-links and casein micelles to enhance energy dissipation and toughen the PHEMAA/casein hybrid hydrogel synergistically. More importantly, the hydrogel could respond to the imposed strains reversibly by cross-link and micelle deformation induced-network reconstitution, which led to low hysteresis of the hydrogels. The recoverable gel networks still exhibited their effects on energy dissipation at the stress-focused area, endowing the hydrogels with fatigue resistance. As a result, the hydrogels exhibited a compressive strength of 36.5 MPa, high stretchability (1460%), high toughness (∼5.98 MJ m^-3), low hysteresis (<30%) and fatigue resistance with almost completely overlapped hysteresis curves during 10 loading cycles. In addition, the introduction of casein micelles and reversible covalent bonding endowed the elastomer hydrogels with high adhesivity, self-healing abilities and biocompatibility.

Host-guest interaction aided Zinc carry and delivery by ESIPT active 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole

The effect of solvents and supramolecular hosts on the binding of metal ion with an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) active fluorophore 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HPBO) are investigated to scrutinize a possible metal ion carry and delivery system. The fluorophore forms strong fluorescent complex with Zn²⁺ ion. In aqueous medium, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) breaks the HPBO-Zn²⁺ complex and encapsulate the freed fluorophore. Hence, the initially blocked ESIPT process is restored by forming an inclusion complex with the host molecules. However, in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), β-CD does not break the complex. But cucurbit[7]uril (CB-7) breaks the complex in both DMSO and water. The tuned emission characteristics are considered for constructing different molecular logic gates. BUFFER, NOT, PASS, IMPLICATION and INHIBIT logic operations are substantiated based on Zn²⁺, CB-7 and β-CD response.

Self-sorting in macroscopic supramolecular self-assembly via additive effects of capillary and magnetic forces

Supramolecular self-assembly of μm-to-mm sized components is essential to construct complex supramolecular systems. However, the selective assembly to form designated structures at this length scale is challenging because the short-ranged molecular recognition could hardly direct the assembly of macroscopic components. Here we demonstrate a self-sorting mechanism to automatically identify the surface chemistry of μm-to-mm components (A: polycations; B: polyanions) based on the A-B attraction and the A-A repulsion, which is realized by the additivity and the competence between long-ranged magnetic/capillary forces, respectively. Mechanistic studies of the correlation between the magnetic/capillary forces and the interactive distance have revealed the energy landscape of each assembly pattern to support the self-sorting results. By applying this mechanism, the assembly yield of ABA trimers has been increased from 30%~40% under conventional conditions to 100% with self-sorting. Moreover, we have demonstrated rapid and spontaneous self-assembly of advanced chain-like structures with alternate surface chemistry.

Thermoresponsive ionogels with switchable adhesion in air and aqueous environments induced by LCST phase behavior

The rapid development of wearable devices is in urgent demand for materials with switchable adhesion both in air and aqueous environments. Herein, we report a thermoresponsive ionogel with switchable adhesion against various substrates both in air and aqueous environments. The switchable adhesion of ionogels is realized by a phase separation induced collapse of the polymer network and the subsequent extrusion of ionic liquids (ILs) on ionogel surfaces. The hydrophobic poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) network and ILs endow the ionogels with excellent water-resistance ability, which enables the application of ionogels in aqueous environments. As a result, the adhesion strength of ionogels against rubber can reach an on/off ratio of 75-fold (45 kPa versus 0.6 kPa) and 7.7-fold (21 kPa versus 2.7 kPa) in air and aqueous environments, respectively. By varying the ratio of two structurally similar ILs in their blends, the responsive temperature of ionogels can be tuned within a wide temperature range from 32 °C to 100 °C. Furthermore, we show a demonstration of an underwater on demand capture and release by taking advantage of the switchable adhesion of ionogels. These nonvolatile ionogels with tunable responsive temperatures and high on/off adhesion strength ratio both in air and aqueous environments show broad applications in the fields related to wearable devices, soft robots and submersible sensors.

Supramolecular Assembly of Shape Memory and Actuating Hydrogels for Programmable Shape Transformation

The deformable diversity of organisms in nature has inspired the development of bionic hydrogel actuators. However, the anisotropic structures of hydrogel actuators cannot be altered after the fabrication process, which restricts hydrogel actuators to provide complex and diverse shape deformations. Herein, we propose a dual programming method to generate numerous anisotropic structures from initial isotropic gelatin-containing hydrogels; the isotropic hydrogel blocks could be first assembled into anisotropic structures based on the coil-triple helix transition of gelatin, and then, the assembled hydrogels could further be fixed into various temporary anisotropies, so that they can produce complex and diverse deformations under the stimulation of pH. In addition, the shape programming and deformation behaviors are reversible. This dual programming method provides more potential for the application of hydrogel actuators in soft robots and bionics.

Unlocking Chemically Encrypted Information Using Three Types of External Stimuli

Encryption is critical to information security; however, existing chemical-based information encryption strategies are still in their infancy. We report here a new approach to chemical encryption involving a supramolecular gel QR (quick response) code with multiple encryption functions. Three color "turn-on" supramolecular polymer gels, G1-G3, were prepared that produce pink, purple, and yellow colors when subject to treatment with acetic acid vapor, UV light, and methanolic FeCl₃, respectively. As the result of hydrogen-bonding interactions at the gel interfaces, the three gels can be assembled to produce gel G4. Engraving a QR code pattern onto G4 then gave gel G5. When one or two stimuli are applied to the individual pieces corresponding to the QR engraved versions of the gels G1-G3 making up G5, a complete scannable pattern is not displayed, and the stored information cannot be recognized. Only when three different stimuli are applied at the same time does G5 give a complete recognizable pattern allowing the stored information to be retrieved. This strategy was applied to the decryption-based opening of a coded lock.

Bioinspired Underwater Adhesives

Underwater adhesives are in high demand in both commercial and industrial sectors. Compared with adhesives used in dry (air) environments, adhesives used for wet or submerged surfaces in aqueous environments have specific challenges in development and performance. In this review, focus is on adhesives demonstrating macroscopic adhesion to wet/underwater substrates. The current strategies are first introduced for different types of underwater adhesives, and then an overview is provided of the development and performance of underwater adhesives based on different mechanisms and strategies. Finally, the possible research directions and prospects of underwater adhesives are discussed.

Codes in Code: AIE Supramolecular Adhesive Hydrogels Store Huge Amounts of Information

With the continuous advancement of information technology, the requirements for the information storage capacity of materials are getting higher and higher. However, information code materials usually only store a single piece of information. In order to improve their storage capacity, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) supramolecular adhesive hydrogels with different fluorescent colors are prepared, and a "Codes in Code" method is used to demonstrate the storage capacity for large amounts of information. Four kinds of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) supramolecular hydrogels with different fluorescent colors are prepared; based on the hydrogen bonds on the hydrogel surface, these hydrogels can be assembled into a hydrogel, G5, which shows multiple fluorescent colors under the irradiation of UV light. When many 1D barcode patterns or/and 2D code patterns are incorporated into G5, not only a kind of 3D information but also plenty of 1D or/and 2D information can be stored. Therefore, the information codes prepared by the "Codes in Code" method can store a large amount of information.

Precise macroscopic supramolecular assembly of photopatterned hydrogels

Here we demonstrate that a precise macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) can be achieved using a surface photopatterning strategy. The electrostatic interaction of the photopatterned polyelectrolytes drives hydrogel cuboids to form a stable MSA on a millimeter scale and the spatial controllability of light enables the hydrogels to be assembled into complex supramolecular architectures.

Bioinspired, Highly Adhesive, Nanostructured Polymeric Coatings for Superhydrophobic Fire-Extinguishing Thermal Insulation Foam

Lightweight polymeric foam is highly attractive as thermal insulation materials for energy-saving buildings but is plagued by its inherent flammability. Fire-retardant coatings are suggested as an effective means to solve this problem. However, most of the existing fire-retardant coatings suffer from poor interfacial adhesion to polymeric foam during use. In nature, snails and tree frogs exhibit strong adhesion to a variety of surfaces by interfacial hydrogen-bonding and mechanical interlocking, respectively. Inspired by their adhesion mechanisms, we herein rationally design fire-retardant polymeric coatings with phase-separated micro/nanostructures via a facile radical copolymerization of hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and sodium vinylsulfonate (VS). The resultant waterborne poly(VS-co-HEA) copolymers exhibit strong interfacial adhesion to rigid polyurethane (PU) foam and other substrates, better than most of the current adhesives because of the combination of interfacial hydrogen-bonding and mechanical interlocking. Besides a superhydrophobic feature, the poly(VS-co-HEA)-coated PU foam can self-extinguish a flame, exhibiting a desired V-0 rating during vertical burning and low heat and smoke release due to its high charring capability, which is superior to its previous counterparts. Moreover, the foam thermal insulation is well-preserved and agrees well with theoretical calculations. This work offers a facile biomimetic strategy for creating advanced adhesive fire-retardant polymeric coatings for many flammable substrates.

Ultra-strong bio-glue from genetically engineered polypeptides

The development of biomedical glues is an important, yet challenging task as seemingly mutually exclusive properties need to be combined in one material, i.e. strong adhesion and adaption to remodeling processes in healing tissue. Here, we report a biocompatible and biodegradable protein-based adhesive with high adhesion strengths. The maximum strength reaches 16.5 ± 2.2 MPa on hard substrates, which is comparable to that of commercial cyanoacrylate superglue and higher than other protein-based adhesives by at least one order of magnitude. Moreover, the strong adhesion on soft tissues qualifies the adhesive as biomedical glue outperforming some commercial products. Robust mechanical properties are realized without covalent bond formation during the adhesion process. A complex consisting of cationic supercharged polypeptides and anionic aromatic surfactants with lysine to surfactant molar ratio of 1:0.9 is driven by multiple supramolecular interactions enabling such strong adhesion. We demonstrate the glue's robust performance in vitro and in vivo for cosmetic and hemostasis applications and accelerated wound healing by comparison to surgical wound closures.

Guest-Host Supramolecular Assembly of Injectable Hydrogel Nanofibers for Cell Encapsulation

The fibrous architecture of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is recognized as an integral regulator of cell function. However, there is an unmet need to develop mechanically robust biomaterials mimicking nanofibrous tissue topography that are also injectable to enable minimally invasive delivery. In this study, we have developed a fibrous hydrogel composed of supramolecularly assembled hyaluronic acid (HA) nanofibers that exhibits mechanical integrity, shear-thinning behavior, rapid self-healing, and cytocompatibility. HA was modified with methacrylates to permit fiber photo-cross-linking following electrospinning and either "guest" adamantane or "host" β-cyclodextrin groups to guide supramolecular fibrous hydrogel assembly. Analysis of fibrous hydrogel rheological properties showed that the mixed guest-host fibrous hydrogel was more mechanically robust (6.6 ± 2.0 kPa, storage modulus (G')) than unmixed guest hydrogel fibers (1.0 ± 0.1 kPa) or host hydrogel fibers (1.1 ± 0.1 kPa) separately. The reversible nature of the guest-host supramolecular interactions also allowed for shear-thinning and self-healing behavior as demonstrated by cyclic deformation testing. Human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) encapsulated in fibrous hydrogels demonstrated satisfactory viability following injection and after 7 days of culture (>85%). Encapsulated hMSCs were more spread and elongated when cultured in viscoelastic guest-host hydrogels compared to nonfibrous elastic controls, with hMSCs also showing significantly decreased circularity in fibrous guest-host hydrogels compared to nonfibrous guest-host hydrogels. Together, these data highlight the potential of this injectable fibrous hydrogel platform for cell and tissue engineering applications requiring minimally invasive delivery.

Elastic-Modulus-Dependent Macroscopic Supramolecular Assembly of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) for Understanding Fast Interfacial Adhesion

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) is a new concept of supramolecular science with an emphasis on noncovalent interactions between macroscopic building blocks with sizes exceeding 10 μm. Owing to a similar noncovalently interactive nature with the phenomena of bioadhesion, self-healing, etc. and flexible features in tailoring and designing modular building blocks, MSA has been developed as a simplified model to interpret interfacial phenomena and a facile method to fabricate supramolecular materials. However, at this early stage, MSA has always been limited to hydrogel materials, which provide flowability for high molecular mobility to the interfacial binding. The extension to a wide range of materials for MSA is desired. Herein, we have developed a strategy of adjusting intrinsic properties (e.g., elastic modulus) of nonhydrogel materials to realize MSA, which could broaden the material choices of MSA. Using the widely used elastomer of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as building blocks, we have demonstrated the elastic-modulus-dependent MSA of PDMS based on the host/guest molecular recognition between supramolecular groups of β-cyclodextrin and adamantane. In the varied elastic modulus range of 0.38 to 3.84 MPa, we obtained the trend of the MSA probability decreasing from 100% at 0.38 MPa to 0% at 3.84 MPa. Meanwhile, in situ measurements of interactive forces between PDMS building blocks have supported the observed assembly phenomena. The underlying reasons are interpreted with the low-modulus flexible surfaces favoring for high molecular mobility to achieve interactions between multiple sites at the interface based on the theory of multivalency. Taken together, we have demonstrated the feasibility of directly adjusting the modulus of bulk materials to realize MSA of nonhydrogel materials, which may provide clues to the fast wet adhesion and new solutions to the additive manufacture of elastomer materials.

Topological cyclodextrin nanoparticles as crosslinkers for self-healing tough hydrogels as strain sensors

Hydrogels have been widely used for various applications, and thus addressing the challenges associated with the design of sustainable hydrogels has become an important issue. However, little attention has been devoted toward the design of crosslinkers which are often toxic, lack self-healing capabilities, and derived from petrochemicals. Herein, novel cyclodextrin topological nanoparticles (TNPs) have been constructed. These TNPs were found to possess crosslinking capabilities and the corresponding TNPs-crosslinked hydrogels showed excellent mechanical performances with a high stretchability of 1860 % and stress of 180 kPa and good anti-fatigue abilities. These hydrogels could be readily recycled and used for modular assembly and disassembly in various shapes and could serve as flexible strain sensors to monitor human activities with a sensing range of 0-1800 %, controllable sensitivity, and good fatigue resistance. These topological nanoparticles can inspire the design of novel physical crosslinkers for novel flexible strain sensors, tough and self-healing hydrogels, and soft robotics.

Fabrication of 3D Ordered Structures with Multiple Materials via Macroscopic Supramolecular Assembly

Integration of diverse materials into 3D ordered structures is urgently required for advanced manufacture owing to increase in demand for high-performance products. Most additive manufacturing techniques mainly focus on simply combining different equipment, while interfacial binding of distinctive materials remains a fundamental problem. Increasing studies on macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) have revealed efficient interfacial interactions based on multivalency of supramolecular interactions facilitated by a "flexible spacing coating." To demonstrate facile fabrication of 3D heterogeneous ordered structures, the combination of MSA and magnetic field-assisted alignment has been developed as a new methodology for in situ integration of a wide range of materials, including elastomer, resin, plastics, metal, and quartz glass, with modulus ranging from tens of MPa to over 70 GPa. Assembly of single material, coassembly of two to four distinctive materials, and 3D alignment of "bridge-like" and "cross-stacked" heterogeneous structures are demonstrated. This methodology has provided a new solution to mild and efficient assembly of multiple materials at the macroscopic scale, which holds promise for advanced fabrication in fields of tissue engineering, electronic devices, and actuators.

Ultrastretchable, self-adhesive, strain-sensitive and self-healing GO@DA/Alginate/P(AAc-co-AAm) multifunctional hydrogels via mussel-inspired chemistry

For conductive hydrogels applied in biosensors, wearable devices and so forth, multifunctionality is an inevitable trend of development to meet various practical requirements and enhance human experience. Herein, inspired by nanocomposite, double-network (DN) and mussel chemistry, a new Graphene oxide@Dopamine/Alginate/Poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) [GO@DA/Alginate/P(AAc-co-AAm)] hydrogel was fabricated through one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization. GO@DA nanofillers, prepared via GO confined DA polymerization, imparted the hydrogel with remarkable adhesiveness. Alginate/P(AAc-co-AAm) DN matrix, physically and chemically crosslinked by Fe³⁺ and N,N'-Methylenebisacrylamide, made hydrogels ultrastretchable, self-healing and biocompatible. With contents of DA and alginate accurately regulated, the tensile strength, elongation, adhesion strength and conductivity of the optimal hydrogel could reach 320.2 kPa, 1198 %, 36.9 kPa and 3.24 ± 0.12 S/m, respectively. What's more notable was that the synergistic integration of repeatable adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, use stability, self-healing ability and biocompatibility provided such hydrogels with tremendous possibility of practical application for strain sensors.

Supramolecular Cross-Links in Mussel-Inspired Tissue Adhesives

Here we introduce a tissue-adhesive patch with orthogonal cohesive and adhesive chemistries; supramolecular ureido-4-pyrimidinone (UPy) cross-links provide cohesive strength, and catechols provide mussel-inspired tissue adhesion. In the development of tissue-adhesive biomaterials, prior research has focused on forming strong adhesive interfaces in wet conditions, leaving the use of supramolecular cross-links for cohesive strength underexplored. In developing this adhesive patch, the influence of the comonomers' composition and amphiphilicity on adhesion was investigated by lap shear adhesion to wet tissue. We determined failed lap joints' failure mechanism using catechol-specific Arnow's stain and identified formulations with improved cohesive strength. The adhesive materials were cytocompatible in mammalian cell conditioned media viability studies. We found that using orthogonal motifs to independently control adhesives' cohesive and adhesive strengths resulted in stronger tissue adhesion. The design principles presented here advance the development of wet tissue adhesives and could allow for the future design of biomaterials with desirable stimuli-responsive properties.

Substrate-Independent, Reversible, and Easy-Release Ionogel Adhesives with High Bonding Strength

It is highly desirable to develop reversible and easy-release adhesives with high bonding strength for a broad range of substrates, while the adhesion of low-surface-energy materials (e.g., polytetrafluoretyhylene, PTFE) is challenging. Herein, a substrate-independent ionogel adhesive is developed by blending an ionic liquid with the copolymer bearing charged segments. By regulating the viscoelastic properties of the ionogel, the adhesive and cohesive strength of the ionogel can be well balanced to maximize the bonding strength for different substrates. The as-developed ionogel exhibits high bonding strength (>0.3 MPa) for PTFE, plastics, metal, wood, and glass, because the variety of functional groups in the ionogel can form various supramolecular interactions with different substrates. The ionogel also exhibits reversible, easy-release, and reusable properties for multiple times of bonding and on-demand debonding without leaving obvious residues on the substrates. The ionogel has high potential for practical applications as temporal adhesives with high bonding strength.

Supramolecular Fabrication of Complex 3D Hollow Polymeric Hydrogels with Shape and Function Diversity

Inspired by the high importance of hollow structures in nature such as blood vessels and bamboos in matter transportation, properties enhancement, or even survival of living creatures, the creation of hollow materials remains of considerable interest. However, constructing hollow unique living-like soft and wet polymeric hydrogels with desirable structures and functionalities is still a big challenge. Here, we reported a robust and effective strategy to fabricate complex three-dimensional (3D) hollow polymeric hydrogel with designed shape and function diversity on the basis of supramolecular interactions. By placing a Ca²⁺ included gelatin core into the solution of alginate, hydrogel shell could be formed along with the shape of the gelatin core via coordination between alginate chains and Ca²⁺ diffused from gelatin. The hollow hydrogel could finally be obtained by dissolving the gelatin core. Various complex 3D hollow structures could be achieved by designing/constructing assembled gelatin core as a building block with adjustable supramolecular metal coordination position and strength. Moreover, hollow hydrogels with function diversity could be developed by introducing functional polymers or nanoparticles into the hydrogel wall. This work has made important progress in developing hollow polymeric hydrogel with desirable structures, shapes, and various functional applications including soft actuators and chemical reaction containers.

Supramolecular silicone coating capable of strong substrate bonding, readily damage healing, and easy oil sliding

Polymer coatings with a combined competence of strong bonding to diverse substrates, broad liquid repellency, and readily damage healing are in substantial demand in a range of applications. In this work, we develop damage-healable, oil-repellent supramolecular silicone (DOSS) coatings to harvest abovementioned properties by molecular engineering siloxane oligomers that can self-assemble onto coated substrates via multivalent hydrogen bonding. In addition to the readily damage-healing properties provided by reversible association/dissociation of hydrogen bonding motifs, the unique molecular configuration of the siloxane oligomers on coated substrates enables both robust repellency to organic liquids and strong bonding to various substrates including metals, plastics, and even Teflon. We envision that not only DOSS coatings can be applied in a range of energy, environmental, and biomedical applications that require long-term services in harsh environmental conditions but also the design strategy of the oligomers can be adopted in the development of supramolecular materials with desirable multifunctionality.

A Functioning Macroscopic "Rubik's Cube" Assembled via Controllable Dynamic Covalent Interactions

The dynamic behavior of a macroscopic adhered hydrogel stabilized through controllable dynamic covalent interactions is reported. These interactions, involving the cross-linked formation of a hydrogel through reaction of a diacylhydrazine precursor with a tetraformyl partner, increase as a function of time. By using a contact time of 24 h and different compounds with recognized aggregation-induced emission features (AIEgens), it proves possible to create six laminated acylhydrazone hydrogels displaying different fluorescent colors. Blocks of these hydrogels are then adhered into a structure resembling a Rubik's Cube, a trademark of Rubik's Brand Limited, (RC) and allowed to anneal for 1 h. This produces a 3 × 3 × 3 block (RC) wherein the individual fluorescent gel blocks are loosely adhered to one another. As a consequence, the 1 × 3 × 3 layers making up the RC can be rotated either horizontally or vertically to produce new patterns. Ex situ modification of the RC or application of a chemical stimulus can be used to produce new color arrangements. The present RC structure highlights how the temporal features, strong versus weak adhesion, may be exploited to create smart macroscopic structures.

Light-Switchable Polymer Adhesive Based on Photoinduced Reversible Solid-to-Liquid Transitions

The development of switchable adhesives for reversible bonding and debonding can overcome the problems associated with conventional adhesives in separating, recycling, and repairing glued surfaces. Here, a photoresponsive azobenzene-containing polymer (azopolymer) is developed for photocontrolled adhesion. The azopolymer P1 (poly(6-(4-(p-tolyldiazenyl)phenoxy)hexyl acrylate)) exhibits photoinduced reversible solid-to-liquid transitions due to trans-cis photoisomerization. Trans P1 is a solid that glues two substrates with a stiffness comparable to that of conventional adhesives. UV light induces trans-to-cis isomerization, liquefies P1, weakens the adhesion, and facilitates the separation of glued substrates. Conversely, visible light induces cis-to-trans isomerization, solidifies P1, and enhances the adhesion. P1 enables photocontrolled reversible adhesion for various substrates with different wettability, chemical compositions, and surface roughness. P1 can also be implemented in both dry and wet environments. Light can control the adhesion process with high spatiotemporal resolution when using P1 as a switchable adhesive. Photoinduced reversible solid-to-liquid transitions represent a strategy for materials recycling and automated production processes that require reversible bonding and debonding.

Microphase separation of a quadruple hydrogen bonding supramolecular polymer: effect of the steric hindrance of the ureido-pyrimidone on their viscoelasticity

Supramolecular polymers based on 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidone (UPy) units with extremely high dimerization constants and adjustable properties have received significant attention. In this work, we attempt to discuss the relationship between the micro-phase separation and the viscoelastic properties of the supramolecular polymers. For this reason, polymers with different UPy moieties structures and different UPy moieties contents were prepared and studied. It was found that the UPy moiety with little hindrance at the six-position of the pyrimidone could self-assemble into a nano-fiber structure and the degree of the micro-phase separation increased with the content of the UPy moiety. With the enlargement of the steric hindrance of the six-position of the pyrimidone, the nano-fiber structure gradually disappeared, meaning the degree of the micro-phase separation decreased astonishingly. More importantly, with the degree of the micro-phase separation increased, the storage modulus or the elasticity modulus increased exponentially and the T m and the loss modulus area increased linearly. These results would lead a new way to study and develop novel polymeric materials.

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly of rigid hydrogels assisted by a flexible spacing coating

To address the difficult challenge of realizing macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) of high-modulus hydrogels, we propose a strategy of introducing a flexible spacing coating to improve the surface compliance for efficient MSA, which holds promise to develop versatile MSA methods for fabricating hydrogel-based tissue scaffolds, and to provide insight into the MSA mechanism.
