MOF‐on‐MOF: Oriented Growth of Multiple Layered Thin Films of Metal–Organic Frameworks

Improved optical quality of heteroepitaxially grown metal-organic framework thin films by modulating the crystal growth

Fabricating high-quality thin films of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is important for integrating MOFs in various applications. Specifically, optical/electrical devices require MOF thin films that are crystallographically oriented, with closely packed crystals and smooth surfaces. Although the heteroepitaxial growth approach of MOFs on metal hydroxides has been demonstrated to control the orientation of the three crystallographic axes, the fabrication of MOF thin films with both three-dimensional crystallographic orientation and smooth surfaces remains a challenge. In this study, we report the fabrication of high-quality thin films of MOFs with closely packed MOF crystals, smooth surfaces, optical transparency, and crystal alignment by modulating the crystal growth of MOFs using the heteroepitaxial growth approach. High-quality thin films of Cu-paddlewheel-based pillar-layered MOFs are fabricated on oriented Cu(OH)2 thin films via epitaxial growth using acetate ions as modulators to control the crystal morphology. Increasing the modulator concentration results in a uniform crystal shape with a relatively long one-dimensional pore direction and uniform heterogeneous nucleation over the entire film. The MOF thin films fabricated using the modulator exhibit high optical transparency. High-quality MOF thin films with dense and flat surfaces will pave the way for integrating MOFs into sophisticated optical and electrical devices.

A ternary heterostructure aptasensor based on metal-organic framework and polydopamine nanoparticles for fluorescent detection of sulfamethazine

Residue of sulfamethazine (SMZ), a typical short-acting drug to prevent bacterial infections, in food is a threat to human health. A ternary heterogeneous metal-organic framework hybrid (Zn/Fe-MOF@PDANSs) of Zn-TCPP-MOF, MIL-101 (Fe) and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDANSs) was proposed to establish an aptasensor for the sensitive and selective detection of SMZ. In this sensor, Zn-TCPP-MOF and FAM emitted fluorescence at 609 nm and 523 nm, respectively, and the fluorescence of FAM-ssDNA could be quenched when it was adsorbed on the surface of MOF hybrid. In the presence of SMZ, the fluorescence of FAM-ssDNA recovered due to the dropping from MOF hybrid, while the fluorescence of MOF hybrid remained. With this strategy, a wide concentration range and high sensitivity of SMZ were detection. And the ternary Zn/Fe-MOF@PDANSs sensor exhibited more excellent performance than binary Zn/Fe-MOF aptasensor. In addition, the sensor showed pleasurable selectivity, and was utilized for SMZ determination in authentic chicken and pork samples, implying the fascinating potential in practical application.

Ultrafast and Parts-per-Billion-Level MEMS Gas Sensors by Hetero-Interface Engineering of 2D/2D Cu-TCPP@ZnIn2S4 with Enriched Surface Sulfur Vacancies

The primary challenge for resonant-gravimetric gas sensors is the synchronous improvement of the sensitivity and response time, which is restricted by low adsorption capacity and slow mass transfer in the sensing process and remains a great challenge. In this study, a novel 2D/2D Cu-TCPP@ZnIn2S4 composite is successfully constructed, in which Cu-TCPP MOF is used as a core substrate for the growth of 2D ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets with well-defined {0001} crystalline facets. The Cu-TCPP@ZnIn2S4 sensor exhibited high sensitivity (1.5 Hz@50 and 2.3 Hz@100 ppb), limit of detection (LOD: 50 ppb), and ultrafast (9 s @500 ppb) detection of triethylamine (TEA), which is the lowest LOD and the fastest sensor among the reported TEA sensors at room temperature, tackling the bottleneck for the ultrafast detection of the resonant-gravimetric sensor. These above results provide an innovative and easily achievable pathway for the synthesis of heterogeneous structure sensing materials.

Interfacial Engineering of Heterogeneous Reactions for MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a subclass of porous crystalline materials with unique structures and multifunctional properties, play a pivotal role in various research domains. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward composite materials based on MOFs, particularly MOF-on-MOF heterostructures. Compared to individual MOF materials, MOF-on-MOF structures harness the distinctive attributes of two or more different MOFs, enabling synergistic effects and allowing for the tailored design of diverse multilayered architectures to expand their application scope. However, the rational design and facile synthesis of MOF-on-MOF composite materials are in principle challenging due to the structural diversity and the intricate interfaces. Hence, this review primarily focuses on elucidating the factors that influence their interfacial growth, with a specific emphasis on the interfacial engineering of heterogeneous reactions, in which MOF-on-MOF hybrids can be conveniently obtained by using pre-fabricated MOF precursors. These factors are categorized as internal and external elements, encompassing inorganic metals, organic ligands, lattice matching, nucleation kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. Meanwhile, these intriguing MOF-on-MOF materials offer a wide range of advantages in various application fields, such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and energy-related applications. Finally, this review highlights current complexities and challenges while providing a forward-looking perspective on future research directions.

Facet engineering of a two-dimensional metal-organic framework with uniquely oriented layered-structure for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction

The properties of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocrystals are highly dependent on their sizes, morphologies, and exposed facets. Facet engineering of MOFs offers an efficient strategy to tailor the active sites and optimize the catalytic activity of both MOFs and their derivatives. In this study, we prepared 1D zeolitic imidazolate framework-nanorod (ZIF-NR) through facet engineering of the parental 2D ZIF-L. The introduction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) surfactant into the synthesis solution hindered the crystal growth along the c-axis of leaf-like ZIF-L, resulting in the formation of 1D ZIF-NR. The derived Co nanoparticle encapsulated N doped carbon nanorod (denoted as Co-NCR) exhibited high activity and stability for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reactions and Zn-air batteries. Facet engineering of a 2D MOF with a uniquely oriented layered structure demonstrates the possibility of designing novel electrocatalysts.

Universal Strategy for Metal-Organic Framework Growth: From Cascading-Functional Films to MOF-on-MOFs

Transformation of metal-organic framework (MOF) particles into thin films is urgently needed for the persistent development of well-applicable devices, and recently emerging functional-integrated hybrid frameworks. Although some flexible polymers and exclusive modification approaches have been proposed, the additive-free and widely applicable strategy has not been reported, hampering the deep investigation of the structure-performance relationship. A universal strategy for the in situ growth of large-area and continuous MOF films with controllable microstructures is introduced, through the modification of multi-scale and multi-structure substrates with poly(4-vinylpyridine) as the anchor to capture metal ions via Coulomb attraction. Based on the clarified structure-adsorption-separation mechanisms, the customized devices fabricated by in situ growth can achieve highly selective adsorption and excellently synergetic separation of various industrially relevant isomers. In addition, this strategy is also feasible for the construction of MOF-on-MOFs with varied lattice parameters. This strategy is easy to implement and will be widely applicable to the surface growth of diverse MOFs on desired substrates, and provides a new concept for developing hybrid MOFs integrating with customized functionalities.

Towards an E-nose: Metal-organic frameworks based quartz crystal microbalance array for fruit ripeness indexing

Ethylene is a hormone for fruit ripening control, and for the purpose of maintaining plant quality, ethylene monitoring is crucial. Due to the simple structure and limited functionality, the technical realization of ethylene detection by an artificial sensor remains a challenge. In this paper, we present a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) array based electronic nose (e-nose) for rapid and accurate determination of ethylene. Six zirconium-based MOFs with systematically modified pore sizes and π-π binding sites have been prepared and fabricated into a sensor array using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technology. By virtue of the synergistic features of six MOF sensors, selectivity detection of ethylene has been achieved. The detection limit reaches to 0.27 ± 0.02 ppm, and high selectivity and stability (98.29 % ± 0.88 %) could also be confirmed. By submitting data to machine learning algorithm, an e-nose system could be established for discriminating ethylene from mixtures with a qualitative accuracy of 90.30 % and quantitative accuracy of 98.89 %. Practical evaluation suggests that the e-nose could index the fruit quality based on the accurate detection of ethylene released during fruit ripeness. This work demonstrates the promising potential of fabricating MOFs based e-nose systems for practical monitoring applications by selectively detecting challengeable target molecules.

Leveraging metal node-linker self-assembly to access functional anisotropy of zirconium-based MOF-on-MOF epitaxial heterostructure thin films

Chemically robust, functional porous materials are imperative for designing novel membranes for chemical separation and heterogeneous catalysts. Among the array of potential materials, zirconium (Zr)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered considerable attention, and have been investigated for applications related to gas separation and storage, and catalysis. However, a significant challenge with Zr-MOFs lies in their processibility, particularly in achieving homogenous thin films and controlling functional anisotropy. The recent developments in MOF thin film fabrication methodologies do not yield a solution to achieve mild reaction condition growth of Zr-MOF thin films with epitaxial MOF-on-MOF geometry (i.e. functional anisotropy). In the current work, we have devised a straightforward methodology under room temperature conditions, which enables epitaxial, oriented MOF-on-MOF thin film growth. This achievement is accomplished through a stepwise self-assembly approach involving Zr nodes and linkers on a functionalized substrate. This de novo developed strategy of functionality design is demonstrated for UiO-66 (University of Oslo) type Zr-MOFs. We have demonstrated the precise placement of chemical functionalities within the thin film structure, allowing for controlled chemical diffusion and regulation of diffusion selectivity.

Fabrication of Oriented Polycrystalline MOF Superstructures

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has progressed beyond the design and exploration of powdery and single-crystalline materials. A current challenge is the fabrication of organized superstructures that can harness the directional properties of the individual constituent MOF crystals. To date, the progress in the fabrication methods of polycrystalline MOF superstructures has led to close-packed structures with defined crystalline orientation. By controlling the crystalline orientation, the MOF pore channels of the constituent crystals can be aligned along specific directions: these systems possess anisotropic properties including enhanced diffusion along specific directions, preferential orientation of guest species, and protection of functional guests. In this perspective, we discuss the current status of MOF research in the fabrication of oriented polycrystalline superstructures focusing on the specific crystalline directions of orientation. Three methods are examined in detail: the assembly from colloidal MOF solutions, the use of external fields for the alignment of MOF particles, and the heteroepitaxial ceramic-to-MOF growth. This perspective aims at promoting the progress of this field of research and inspiring the development of new protocols for the preparation of MOF systems with oriented pore channels, to enable advanced MOF-based devices with anisotropic properties.

Recent Progress in 2D Metal-Organic Framework-Related Materials

2D metal-organic frameworks-based (2D MOF-related) materials benefit from variable topological structures, plentiful open active sites, and high specific surface areas, demonstrating promising applications in gas storage, adsorption and separation, energy conversion, and other domains. In recent years, researchers have innovatively designed multiple strategies to avoid the adverse effects of conventional methods on the synthesis of high-quality 2D MOFs. This review focuses on the latest advances in creative synthesis techniques for 2D MOF-related materials from both the top-down and bottom-up perspectives. Subsequently, the strategies are categorized and summarized for synthesizing 2D MOF-related composites and their derivatives. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted faced by 2D MOF-related materials and some targeted recommendations are put forward to inspire researchers to investigate more effective synthesis methods.

Immobilization of iron phthalocyanine on MOF-derived N-doped carbon for promoting oxygen reduction in zinc-air battery

Functional carbon nanomaterials play a crucial role in the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for sustainable fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this study, we propose an effective approach to immobilize iron phthalocyanines (FePc) by employing a porous N-doped carbon material, denoted as NC-1000, derived from a sheet-shaped coordination polymer. The resulting NC-1000 possesses substantial porosity and abundant pore defects. The nitrogen sites within NC-1000 not only facilitate FePc adsorption but also optimize the electron distribution at the Fe-N site. The FePc@NC-1000 composite material exhibits a significant number of active centers in the form of Fe-N4 moieties, showcasing satisfactory ORR activity. Specifically, it demonstrates an onset potential of 0.99 V, a positive half-wave potential of 0.86 V, a large limiting current of 5.96 mA cm-2, and a small Tafel slope of 44.41 mV dec-1. Additionally, theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm the favorable performance and durability of zinc-air batteries assembled using FePc@NC-1000, thereby highlighting their considerable potential for practical applications. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive exploration of the enhanced catalytic performance and increased stability of metal-organic framework-derived functional carbon nanomaterials as cost-effective, efficient, and stable catalysts for the ORR.

Facet-controlled assembly for organizing metal-organic framework particles into extended structures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials characterized by their high porosity and chemical tailorability. To realize the full potential of synthesized MOFs, it is important to transform them from crystalline solid powders into materials with integrated morphologies and properties. One promising approach is facet-controlled assembly, which involves arranging individual crystalline MOF particles into ordered macroscale structures by carefully controlling the interactions between particles. The resulting assembled MOF structures maintain the characteristics of individual particles while also exhibiting improved properties overall. In this article, we emphasize the essential concepts of MOF assembly, highlighting the impact of building blocks, surface interactions, and Gibbs free energy on the assembly process. We systematically examine three methods of guiding facet-controlled MOF assembly, including spontaneous assembly, assembly guided by external forces, and assembly through surface modifications. Lastly, we offer outlooks on future advancements in the fabrication of MOF-based material and potential application exploration.

New Function of Metal-Organic Framework: Structurally Ordered Metal Promoter

The remarkable roles of metal promoters have been known for nearly a century, but it is still a challenge to find a suitable structure model to reveal the action mechanism behind metal promoters. Herein, a new function of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is developed as an ideal model to construct structurally ordered metal promoters by a targeted post-modification strategy. MOFs as model not only favor clearing the real action mechanism behind metal promoters, but also can anchor one or multiple kinds of metal promoters especially noble metal promoters. Typically, the as-prepared Pd/bpy-UiO-Cu catalysts show high selectivity (>99%) toward 4-nitrophenylethane in 4-nitrostyrene hydrogenation, mainly due to the enhanced interaction between Pd nanoparticles and MOF carriers induced by Cu promoters, thus inhibiting the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenylethane. This strategy with flexibility and universality will open up a new route to synthesize efficient catalysts with structurally ordered metal promoters.

Integrated Soft Porosity and Electrical Properties of Conductive-on-Insulating Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals

A one-stone, two-bird method to integrate the soft porosity and electrical properties of distinct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a single material involves the design of conductive-on-insulating MOF (cMOF-on-iMOF) heterostructures that allow for direct electrical control. Herein, we report the synthesis of cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures using a seeded layer-by-layer method, in which the sorptive iMOF core is combined with chemiresistive cMOF shells. The resulting cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures exhibit enhanced selective sorption of CO2 compared to the pristine iMOF (298 K, 1 bar, SCO 2 / H 2 ${{_{{\rm CO}{_{2}}/{\rm H}{_{2}}}}}$ from 15.4 of ZIF-7 to 43.2-152.8). This enhancement is attributed to the porous interface formed by the hybridization of both frameworks at the molecular level. Furthermore, owing to the flexible structure of the iMOF core, the cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures with semiconductive soft porous interfaces demonstrated high flexibility in sensing and electrical "shape memory" toward acetone and CO2 . This behavior was observed through the guest-induced structural changes of the iMOF core, as revealed by the operando synchrotron grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements.

Emerging Pristine MOF-Based Heterostructured Nanoarchitectures: Advances in Structure Evolution, Controlled Synthesis, and Future Perspectives

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be customized through modular assembly to achieve a wide range of potential applications, based on their desired functionality. However, most of the initially reported MOFs are limited to microporous systems and are not sufficiently stable, which restricts their popularization. Heterogeneity is introduced into a simple MOF framework to create MOF-based heterostructures with fascinating properties and interesting functions. Heterogeneity can be introduced into the MOFs via postsynthetic/ligand exchange. Although the ligand exchange has shown potential, it is difficult to precisely control the degree of exchange or position. Among the various synthesis strategies, hierarchical assembly is particularly attractive for constructing MOF-based heterostructures, as it can achieve precise regulation of MOF-based heterostructured nanostructures. The hierarchical assembly significantly expands the compositional diversity of MOF-based heterostructures, which has high elasticity for lattice matching during the epitaxial growth of MOFs. This review focuses on the synthetic evolution mechanism of hierarchical assemblies of MOF-based nanoarchitectures. Subsequently, the precise control of pore structure, pore size, and morphology of MOF-based nanoarchitectures by hierarchical assembly is emphasized. Finally, possible solutions to address the challenges associated with heterogeneous interfaces are presented, and potential opportunities for innovative applications are proposed.

Layered 3D Covalent Organic Framework Films Based on Carbon-Carbon Bonds

The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) during the past decades has led to a variety of promising applications within gas storage, catalysis, drug delivery, and sensing. Even though most described synthesis methods result in powdery COFs with uncontrolled grain size, several approaches to grow COF films have recently been explored. However, in all COFs so far presented, the isolated materials are chemically homogeneous, with all functionalities homogeneously distributed throughout the entire material. Strategies to synthetically manipulate the spatial distribution of functionalities in a single film would be game changing. Specifically, this would allow for the introduction of local functionalities and even consecutive functions in single frameworks, thus broadening their synthetic versatility and application potential. Here, we synthesize two 3D crystalline COF films. The frameworks, the ionic B-based and neutral C-based COFs, have similar unit cell parameters, which enables their epitaxial stacking in a layered 3D COF film. The film growth was monitored in real time using a quartz crystal microbalance, showing linear growth with respect to reaction time. The high degree of polymerization was confirmed by chemical analysis and vibrational spectroscopy. Their polycrystalline and anisotropic natures were confirmed with grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. We further expand the scope of the concept by making layered films from COF-300 and its iodinated derivative. Finally, the work presented here will pave the path for multifunctional COF films where concurrent functionalities are embedded in the same crystalline material.

Principles of Design and Synthesis of Metal Derivatives from MOFs

Materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low-cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF-derived metal-based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. The work is also supported by comprehensive and up-to-date tabular coverage of the reported studies.

Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay strategies based on a hexagonal Ru-MOF and MoS2@GO nanosheets: detection of 5-fluorouracil in serum samples

Herein, a competitive-type electrochemiluminescence immunosensor for ultrasensitive detection of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was fabricated. Ruthenium(II)-metal-organic framework (Ru-MOF) nanosheets were selected to act a promising ECL luminophore using tris(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) dichloride (Ru(dcbpy)₃²⁺) as the organic ligand. The two-dimensional (2D) Ru-MOF nanosheets achieved an increased loading of Ru(dcbpy)₃²⁺ and effectively prevented leakage of the ECL emitter during application, which exhibited satisfactory ECL performance. Thin two-dimensional MoS₂@GO was used to modify the electrode as the sensing platform for improving the electron transfer rate and loading more 5-FU coating antigens due to its large specific surface area and piezoelectric catalytic efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed immunosensor presented high sensitivity, a wide detection range (0.0001 ng-100 ng mL^-1), a low limit of detection (0.031 pg mL^-1, S/N = 3), good specificity and stability. Furthermore, the immunosensor was successfully applied for the detection of 5-FU in human serum samples with satisfactory results, proving this strategy has potential applications in bioanalysis and clinical diagnosis.

Polarization-dependent plasmonic heating in epitaxially grown multilayered metal-organic framework thin films embedded with Ag nanoparticles

The development of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films with various functionalities has paved the way for research into a wide variety of applications. MOF-oriented thin films can exhibit anisotropic functionality in the not only out-of-plane but also in-plane directions, making it possible to utilize MOF thin films for more sophisticated applications. However, the functionality of oriented MOF thin films has not been fully exploited, and finding novel anisotropic functionality in oriented MOF thin films should be cultivated. In the present study, we report the first demonstration of polarization-dependent plasmonic heating in a MOF oriented film embedded with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), pioneering an anisotropic optical functionality in MOF thin films. Spherical AgNPs exhibit polarization-dependent plasmon-resonance absorption (anisotropic plasmon damping) when incorporated into an anisotropic lattice of MOFs. The anisotropic plasmon resonance results in a polarization-dependent plasmonic heating behavior; the highest elevated temperature was observed in case the polarization of incident light is parallel to the crystallographic axis of the host MOF lattice favorable for the larger plasmon resonance, resulting in polarization-controlled temperature regulation. Such spatially and polarization selective plasmonic heating offered by the use of oriented MOF thin films as a host can pave the way for applications such as efficient reactivation in MOF thin film sensors, partial catalytic reactions in MOF thin film devices, and soft microrobotics in composites with thermo-responsive materials.

Self-Supporting Co/CeO2 Heterostructures for Ampere-Level Current Density Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Remodeling the active surface through fabricating heterostructures can substantially enhance alkaline water electrolysis driven by renewable electrical energy. However, there are still great challenges in the synthesis of highly reactive and robust heterostructures to achieve both ampere-level current density hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we report a new Co/CeO₂ heterojunction self-supported electrode for sustainable overall water splitting. The self-supporting Co/CeO₂ heterostructures required only low overpotentials of 31.9 ± 2.2, 253.3 ± 2.7, and 316.7 ± 3 mV for HER and 214.1 ± 1.4, 362.3 ± 1.9, and 400.3 ± 3.7 mV for OER at 0.01, 0.5, and 1.0 A·cm^-2, respectively, being one of the best Co-based bifunctional electrodes. Electrolyzer constructed from this electrode acting as an anode and cathode merely required cell voltages of 1.92 ± 0.02 V at 1.0 A·cm^-2 for overall water splitting. Multiple characterization techniques combined with density functional theory calculations disclosed the different active sites on the anode and cathode, and the charge redistributions on the heterointerfaces that can optimize the adsorption of H and oxygen-containing intermediates, respectively. This study presents the tremendous prospective of self-supporting heterostructures for effective and economical overall water splitting.

In Operando Spectroscopic Ellipsometry Investigation of MOF Thin Films for the Selective Capture of Acetic Acid

The emission of polar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a major worldwide concern of air quality and equally impacts the preservation of cultural heritage (CH). The challenge is to design highly efficient adsorbents able to selectively capture traces of VOCs such as acetic acid (AA) in the presence of relative humidity (RH) normally found at storage in museums (40-80%). Although the selective capture of VOCs over water is still challenging, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess highly tunable features (Lewis, Bronsted, or redox metal sites, functional groups, hydrophobicity, etc.) suitable to selectively capture a large variety of VOCs. In this context, we have explored the adsorption efficiency of a series of MOFs thin films (ZIF-8(Zn), MIL-101(Cr), and UiO-66(Zr)-2CF₃) for the selective capture of AA based on a UV/vis and FT-IR spectroscopic ellipsometry in operando study (2-6% of relative pressure of AA under 40% of RH), namely conditions close to the realistic environmental storage conditions of cultural artifacts. For that purpose, optical quality thin films of MOFs were prepared by dip-coating, and their AA adsorption capacity and selectivity were evaluated under humid conditions by measuring the variation of the refractive index as a function of the vapor pressures while the chemical nature of the coadsorbed analytes (water and AA) was identified by FT-IR ellipsometry. While thin films of ZIF-8(Zn) strongly degraded upon exposure to AA/water vapors, films of MIL-101(Cr) and UiO-66(Zr)-2CF₃ present a high chemical stability under those conditions. It was shown that MIL-101(Cr) presents a high AA adsorption capacity due to its high pore volume but exhibits a poor AA adsorption selectivity under humid conditions. In contrast, UiO-66(Zr)-2CF₃ was shown to overpass MIL-101(Cr) in terms of AA/H₂O adsorption selectivity and AA adsorption/desorption cycling stability because of its high hydrophobic character, suitable pore size for adequate confinement, and specific interactions.

Rhodium-Based MOF-on-MOF Difunctional Core-Shell Nanoreactor for NAD(P)H Regeneration and Enzyme Directed Immobilization

An organometallic complex-catalyzed artificial coenzyme regeneration system has attracted widespread attention. However, the combined use of organometallic complex catalysts and natural enzymes easily results in mutual inactivation. Herein, we establish a rhodium-based metal-organic framework (MOF)-on-MOF difunctional core-shell nanoreactor as an artificial enzymatic NAD(P)H regeneration system. UiO67 as the core is used to capture rhodium molecules for catalyzing NAD(P)H regeneration. UiO66 as the shell is used to specifically immobilize His-tagged lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and serve as a protection shield for LDH and [Cp*Rh(bpy)Cl]⁺ to prevent mutual inactivation. A variety of results indicate that UiO67@Rh@UiO66 has good activity in realizing NAD(P)H regeneration. Noteworthily, UiO67@Rh@UiO66@LDH maintains a high activity level even after 10 cycles. This work reports a novel NAD(P)H regeneration platform to open up a new avenue for constructing chemoenzyme coupling systems.

Preparation of MOF-Based Core-Shell Gel Particles with Catalytic Activity and Their Plugging Performance

Drilling fluid systems for deep and ultra-deep wells are hampered by both high-temperature downhole environments and lengthy cycle periods. Suppose that the gel particle-plugging agent, the primary treatment agent in the system, fails to offer durable and stable plugging performance. In such a scenario, the borehole wall is susceptible to instability and landslide after prolonged immersion, leading to downhole accidents. In this study, novel core-shell gel particles (modified ZIF) with ZIF particles employed as the core material and organosilicon-modified polyethylene polyamine (PEPA) as the polymer shell were fabricated using PEPA, in-house synthesized (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTS), and the ZIF-8 metal-organic framework (MOF) as the raw materials to enhance the long-term plugging performance of gel plugging agents. The modified ZIF particles are nanoscale polygonal crystals and differ from conventional core-shell gel particles in that they feature high molecular sieve catalytic activity due to the presence of numerous interior micropores and mesopores. As a result, modified ZIF exhibits the performance characteristics of both rigid and flexible plugging agents and has an excellent catalytic cross-linking effect on the sulfonated phenolic resin (SMP-3) and sulfonated lignite resin (SPNH) in drilling fluids. Consequently, a cross-linking reaction occurs when SMP-3 and SPNH flow through the spacings in the plugging layer formed by the modified ZIF particles. This increases the viscosity of the liquid phase and simultaneously generates an insoluble gel, forming a particle-gel composite plugging structure with the modified ZIF and significantly enhancing the long-term plugging performance of the drilling fluid.

Fabrication of Functionalized UiO-66 Anchored on Disorderly Layered Clinoptilolite via Surfactant-Assisted Induction for Selective Adsorption of CO2 and CH4

The amine (NH₂)-functionalized UiO-66 was successfully anchored on disorderly layered clinoptilolite (CP) via surfactant (poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP))-assisted induction. The structural features and physicochemical parameters of the resultant UiO-66-on-CPs were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) images, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, N₂ sorption isotherms, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns. The results demonstrated that the growth of UiO-66-NH₂ nanoparticles facilitated the disorder degree of the crystal plane of CP along the a-axis, while the addition of PEG in the hydrothermal synthesis system of CP was conducive to the formation of a flower-like microstructure and the introduction of PVP was beneficial to the nucleation and growth of UiO-66-NH₂ nanoparticles with a small size (40 nm) on the surfaces of the obtained CP-PEG lamellas. Finally, the gas-selective adsorption and separation performances of CO₂ and CH₄ were evaluated using the synthesized disorderly layered UiO-66-on-CP heterostructures as adsorbents, indicating that the NH₂-functionalized UiO-66-on-CP exhibited a superior selective factor (3.66) of CO₂/CH₄. These results elucidated that the proposed approach is a promising strategy for constructing MOF-on-zeolite heterostructures, which may open an avenue to expand CP application and improve their performance.

Unraveling the timescale of the structural photo-response within oriented metal-organic framework films

Fundamental knowledge on the intrinsic timescale of structural transformations in photo-switchable metal-organic framework films is crucial to tune their switching performance and to facilitate their applicability as stimuli-responsive materials. In this work, for the first time, an integrated approach to study and quantify the temporal evolution of structural transformations is demonstrated on an epitaxially oriented DMOF-1-on-MOF film system comprising azobenzene in the DMOF-1 pores (DMOF-1/AB). We employed time-resolved Grazing Incidence Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering measurements to track the structural response of the DMOF-1/AB film upon altering the length of the azobenzene molecule by photo-isomerization (trans-to-cis, 343 nm; cis-to-trans, 450 nm). Within seconds, the DMOF-1/AB response occurred fully reversible and over several switching cycles by cooperative photo-switching of the oriented DMOF-1/AB crystallites as confirmed further by infrared measurements. Our work thereby suggests a new avenue to elucidate the timescales and photo-switching characteristics in structurally responsive MOF film systems.

Electrochemiluminescent (ECL) biosensor for Burkholderia pseudomallei based on cobalt-doped MOF decorated with gold nanoparticles and N-(4-aminobutyl)-N-(ethylisoluminol)

A multifunctional catalytic nanomaterial (Co-MOF@AuNP@ABEI) composed of cobalt-doped metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOF), gold nanoparticles (AuNP), and N-(4-aminobutyl)-N-(ethylisoluminol) (ABEI) is reported. Co-MOF@AuNP@ABEI exhibits high synergistic and zero-distance catalytic properties, which are beneficial to the improvement of the detection sensitivity of an electrochemiluminescent (ECL) biosensor. After coupling with the ECL system and 3D magnetic walking nanomachine amplification strategy, the Co-MOF@AuNP@ABEI can achieve an ultrasensitive ECL assay of Burkholderia pseudomallei with the limit of detection (LOD) of 60.3 aM, which is 2 and 4 orders of magnitude lower than individual ECL system without the nanomachine (4.97 fM) and individual walking nanomachine (340 fM), and superior to the pathogenic bacteria analyses in the previous report. Moreover, the LOD of the proposed ECL detection system for the determination of B. pseudomallei in serum sample was as low as 9.0 CFU mL^-1. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of ECL intensity for the detection of five B. pseudomallei-spiked serum samples were 4.02%, 0.84%, 0.84%, 1.55%, and 0.21%, respectively. The recoveries of the ECL biosensor for the detection of B. pseudomallei DNA-spiked serum samples were 93.63 ~ 107.83%. Therefore, this work demonstrated that the developed multifunctional catalytic nanomaterial with synergistic and zero-distance catalytic properties can be used as excellent ECL signal reporter to improve the detection sensitivity of ECL biosensor.

Real-time drug release monitoring from pH-responsive CuS-encapsulated metal-organic frameworks

Real-time monitoring of drug release behaviors over extended periods of time is critical in understanding the dynamics of drug progression for personalized chemotherapeutic treatment. In this work, we report a metal–organic framework (MOF)-based nanotheranostic system encapsulated with photothermal agents (CuS) and therapeutic drug (DOX) to achieve the capabilities of real-time drug release monitoring and combined chemo-photothermal therapy. Meanwhile, folic acid-conjugated polyethylene glycol (FA-PEG) antennas were connected to the MOF through coordination interactions, endowing the MOF with an enhanced active targeting effect toward cancer cells. It is anticipated that such a theranostic agent, simultaneously possessing tumor-targeting, real-time drug monitoring and effective treatment, will potentially enhance the performance in cancer therapy.

A metal–organic framework-based nanotheranostic system was fabricated to achieve the capabilities of tumor-targeting, real-time monitoring of pH-responsive drug release and combined chemo-photothermal therapy.

Thin Film Growth of 3D Sr-based Metal-Organic Framework on Conductive Glass via Electrochemical Deposition

Integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as components of advanced electronic devices is at a very early phase of development and the fundamental issues related to their crystal growth on conductive substrate need to be addressed. Herein, we report on the structural characterization of a newly synthesized Sr-based MOF {[Sr(2,5-Pzdc)(H2 O)2 ] ⋅ 3 H2 O}n (1) and the uniform crystal growth of compound 1 on a conducting glass (fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO)) substrate using electrochemical deposition techniques. The Sr-based MOF 1 was synthesized by the reaction of Sr(NO3 )2 with 2,5-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid dihydrate (2,5-Pzdc) under solvothermal conditions. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 1 has a 3D structure and crystallizes in the triclinic P1 ‾ space group. In addition, the uniform crystal growth of this MOF on a conducting glass (FTO) substrate was successfully achieved using electrochemical deposition techniques. Only a handful of MOFs have been reposed to grown on conductive surfaces, which makes this study an important focal point for future research on the applications of MOF-based devices in microelectronics.

Fabricated Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as luminescent and electrochemical biosensors for cancer biomarkers detection

In the health domain, a major challenge is the detection of diseases using rapid and cost-effective techniques. Most of the existing cancer detection methods show poor sensitivity and selectivity and are time consuming with high cost. To overcome this challenge, we analyzed porous fabricated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have better structures and porosities for enhanced biomarker sensing. Here, we summarize the use of fabricated MOF luminescence and electrochemical sensors in devices for cancer biomarker detection. Various strategies of fabrication and the role of fabricated materials in sensing cancer biomarkers have been studied and described. The structural properties, sensing mechanisms, roles of noncovalent interactions, limits of detection, modeling, advantages, and limitations of MOF sensors have been well-discussed. The study presents an innovative technique to detect the cancer biomarkers by the use of luminescence and electrochemical MOF sensors. In addition, the potential association studies have been opening the way for personalized patient treatments and the development of new cancer-detecting devices.

The synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework/prussian blue analogue heterostructure composites and their application in supercapacitors

ZIF-67/PBA heterostructure composites was prepared by the ion-exchange method with ZIF-67 nanoparticles as host MOFs. The electrochemical performance of the ZIF-67/PBA heterostructure composites improved after low-temperature calcination.

Precursor-converted formation of bimetallic–organic framework nanosheets for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

A precursor-converted method is adopted to synthesize 2D NiFe-MOF nanosheets from NiFe-LDH, which demonstrates excellent catalytic OER performance.

Hetero-lattice intergrown and robust MOF membranes for polyol upgrading

Metal-organic framework membranes are frequently used in gas separations, but rare in pervaporation for liquid chemical upgrading, especially for separating water from polyols, due to lack of highly compact and robust micro-architecture. Here, we report hetero-lattice intergrown membranes in which amino-MIL-101 (Cr) particles embedded into the micro-gaps of MIL-53 (Al) rod arrays after secondary growth. By means of high-resolution TEM and two-dimensional topologic simulation, the connection between these two distinct MOF lattices at molecular-level and their crystallographic geometry harmony is identified, which leads to a close-knit structure at crystal boundaries of membranes. Typically, the membrane shows a separation factor as high as 13,000 for 90/10 ethanediol/water solution in pervaporation, yields polymer-grade ethanediol, and saves ca. 32% of energy consumption vs. vacuum distillation. It has a highly robust micro-architecture, with great tolerance to high pressure, durability against ultrasonic therapy and long-term separation stability over 600 h.

Metal-Organic Framework superstructures with long-ranged orientational order via E-field assisted liquid crystal assembly

Most MOFs are non-cubic, with functionality dependent upon crystallographic direction, and are largely prepared as microcrystalline powders. Therefore, general methods to orient and assemble free-standing MOF crystals are especially important and urgently needed. This is addressed here through the novel strategy of E-field assisted liquid crystal assembly, applied to MIL-53-NH₂(Al), MIL-68(In) and NU-1000 MOF crystals, with aspect ratios ranging from 10 to 1.2, to form highly oriented MOF superstructures which were photopolymerized to fix their long-ranged order. This new strategy for controlling MOF orientation and packing side-steps the traditional requirements of particle monodispersity, shape homogeneity and high aspect ratios (>4.7) typical of colloidal and liquid crystal assembly, and is applicable even to polydispersed MOF crystals, thereby paving the way towards the development of highly oriented MOF composites with improved functionality.

Development of Au-Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC as a self-supported electrochemical sensor for in situ monitoring of cellular hydrogen peroxide

Integrating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of different components or structures together and exploiting them as electrochemical sensors for electrochemical sensing has aroused great interest. Furthermore, the incorporation of noble metals with MOFs is conducive to the improvement of catalytic performance. In this work, Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L nanomaterials were successfully synthesised onto a self-supported flexible carbon cloth (Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC) through a novel strategy called MOF-on-MOF. Then, Au nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC to obtain Au-Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC, which can serve as an excellent electrocatalyst for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The obtained flower-like Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC hybrid MOF changes the structure of the monomeric MOF alone and adds more attachment sites. The synergy of the bimetals greatly improved the catalytic performance of the as-developed sensor. Electrochemical experiment results show that the proposed sensor based on Au-Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC has an extended linear range from 1 μM to 19.6 mM with a sensitivity of 390 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 21.2 nM (S/N = 3). Moreover, it has good anti-interference, reproducibility, repeatability and excellent stability. Furthermore, the real-time in situ detection of H₂O₂ secreted from human adenocarcinomic alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549 cells) was achieved by culturing cells on Au-Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC, which indicates the potential of the sensor for applications in cancer pathology. Both the synthesis strategy and the sensor design provide new methods and ideas for the production of ultrasensitive H₂O₂ electrochemical sensors.

Concluding remarks: current and next generation MOFs

This paper describes the content of my "Concluding remarks" talk at the Faraday Discussion meeting on "MOFs for energy and the environment" (online, 23-25 June 2021). The panel consisted of sessions on the design of MOFs and MOF hybrids (synthetic chemistry), their applications (e.g., capture, storage, separation, electrical devices, photocatalysis), advanced characterization (e.g., transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance), theory and modeling, and commercialization. MOF chemistry is undergoing a significant evolution from simply network chemistry to the chemistry of synergistic integration with heterogeneous materials involving other disciplines (we call this the fourth generation type). As reflected in the papers of the invited speakers and discussions with the participants, the present and future of this field will be described in detail.

Organic guest molecule induced ultrafast breathing of an epitaxially grown metal-organic framework on a self-assembled monolayer

We report epitaxially grown new two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). We fabricated these epitaxial thin-films using stepwise layer-by-layer seeding followed by solvothermal treatment. The MOF thin films exhibit ultrafast structural flexibility (through breathing) compared to their bulk samples upon uptake of organic guest molecules.
