Fabrication of Large Single Crystals for Platinum‐Based Linear Polymers with Controlled‐Release and Photoactuator Performance

Lanthanide-Dependent Photochemical and Photophysical Properties of Lanthanide-Anthracene Complexes: Experimental and Theoretical Approaches

The structural, photophysical, and photochemical properties of Ln(depma)(hmpa)2(NO3)3 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Ho, Er, and Yb) complexes 1-Ln were investigated with a multidisciplinary approach involving synthesis, photocycloaddition-based crystal engineering, spectroscopic analytical techniques and quantum chemical ab initio calculations. Depending on the Ln3+ ion the isostructural 1-Ln complexes exhibit quite different behavior upon excitation at 350-400 nm. Some 1-Ln complexes (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Tb, Yb) emit a broad and strong band near 533 nm arising from paired anthracene moieties, whereas others (Ln = Nd, Eu, Ho, Er) do not. 1-Eu is not emissive at all, whereas 1-Nd, 1-Ho, and 1-Er exhibit a Ln3+ based luminescence. Upon irradiation with 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) light 1-Ln (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Tb, Yb) dimerize by means of a photochemically induced [4 + 4] cycloaddition of the anthracene moieties, whereas 1-Ln (Ln = Nd, Eu, Ho, Er) remain monomers. We propose three models, based on the matching of the energy levels between the Ln3+ ion and the paired or dimerized anthracene units in the energy-resonance crossing region, as well as on internal conversion-driven and intersystem crossing-driven energy transfer, which explain the Ln3+ ion regulated photophysics and photochemistry of the 1-Ln complexes.

The Use of Photocycloaddition Reactions to Drive Mechanical Motions Resembling Humanoid Movements

With the aim of producing a photomechanical material for incorporation in soft microrobots, a one-dimensional diene coordination polymer (CP) [Cd(F-bpeb)(3-CBA)2]n (CP1, F-bpeb=4,4'-((1E,1'E)-(2,5-difluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dipyridine, 3-HCBA=3-chlorobenzoic acid) was synthesized and characterized. Irradiation of CP1 with ultraviolet (UV) or visible light causes [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions resulting in the introduction of crystal strain which triggers various types of crystal movements. Composite films of CP1-PVA (SC) fabricated by dispersing CP1 crystals into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution allow amplification of the crystal movement so that the film strips exhibit fast and flexible curling upon photoirradiation. The composite films may be cut into long rectangular strips and folded to simulate soft microrobots which exhibit a variety of fast, flexible and continuous photomechanical movements resembling a human performing various gymnastic exercises.

Exfoliation of a metal-organic framework enabled by post-synthetic cleavage of a dipyridyl dianthracene ligand

The synthetic tunability and porosity of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) renders them a promising class of materials for ultrathin and nanoscale applications. Conductive 2D MOFs are of particular interest for applications in nanoelectronics, chemo-sensing, and memory storage. However, the lack of covalency along the stacking axis typically leads to poor crystallinity in 2D MOFs, limiting structural analysis and precluding exfoliation. One strategy to improve crystal growth is to increase order along the stacking direction. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of mechanically exfoliatable macroscopic crystals of a 2D zinc MOF by selective dimensional reduction of a 3D zinc MOF bearing a dianthracene (diAn) ligand along the stacking axis. The diAn ligand, a thermally cleavable analogue of 4,4'-bipyridine, is synthesized by the direct functionalization of dianthraldehyde in a novel "dianthracene-first" approach. This work presents a new strategy for the growth of macroscopic crystals of 2D materials while introducing the functionalization of dianthraldehyde as a means to access new stimuli-responsive ligands.

Photomechanical properties in metal-organic crystals

The emergence of materials that can effectively convert photon energy (light) into motion (mechanical work) and change their shapes on command is of great interest for their potential in the fabrication of devices (powered by light) that will revolutionize the technologies of optical actuators, smart medical devices, soft robotics, artificial muscles and flexible electronics. Recently, metal-organic crystals have emerged as desirable smart hybrid materials that can hop, split and jump. Thus, their incorporation into polymer host objects can control movement from molecules to millimetres, opening up a new world of light-switching smart materials. This feature article briefly summarizes the recent part of the fast-growing literature on photomechanical properties in metal-organic crystals, such as coordination compounds, coordination polymers (CPs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The article highlights the contributions of our group along with others in this area and aims to provide a consolidated idea of the engineering strategies and structure-property relationships of these hybrid materials for such rare phenomena with diverse potential applications.

Fabrication of Large-Area Multi-Stimulus Responsive Thin Films via Interfacially Confined Irreversible Katritzky Reaction

Fabrication of large-area thin films through irreversible reactions remains a formidable task. This study reports a breakthrough strategy for in situ synthesis of large-area, free-standing, robust and multi-stimulus responsive thin films through a catalyst-free and irreversible Katritzky reaction at a liquid-liquid interface. The as resulted films are featured with adjustable thickness of 1-3 μm and an area up to 50 cm2. The thin films exhibit fast photo-mechanical motions (a response time of ca 0.1 s), vapor-mechanical motions, as well as photo-chromic and solvato-chromic behaviors. It was revealed that the reason behind the observable motions is proton transfer from the imine groups to the carbonyl structures within the film induced by photo- and/or dimethyl sulfoxide-stimulus. In addition, the films can harvest anionic radicals and the radicals as captured can be efficiently degraded under UV light illumination. This study provides a new strategy for fabricating smart thin films via interfacially confined irreversible Katritzky reaction.

A Cellulose-Based Dual-Crosslinked Framework with Sensitive Shape and Color Changes in Acid/Alkaline Vapors

Cellulose detectors, as green sensors, are some of the defensive mechanisms of plants which combat environmental stresses. However, extracted cellulose struggles to fulfil these functionalities due to its rigid physical/chemical properties. In this study, a novel cellulose dual-crosslinked framework (CDCF) is proposed. This comprises a denser temporary physical crosslinking bond (hydrogen bonding) and a looser covalent crosslinking bond (N,N-methylenebisacrylamide), which create deformable spaces between the two crosslinking sites. Abundant pH-sensitive carboxyl groups and ultralight, highly porous structures make CDCF response very sensitive in acid/alkaline vapor environments. Hence, a significant shrinkage of CDCF was observed following exposure to vapors. Moreover, a curcumin-incorporated CDCF exhibited dual shape and color changes when exposed to acid/alkaline vapors, demonstrating great potential for the multi-detection of acid/alkaline vapors.

Construction of olefinic coordination polymer single crystal platforms: precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms and beyond

Olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions based on coordination-bond templates provide numerous advantages for the selective synthesis of cyclobutane compounds. This review outlines the recent advances in the design and construction of single crystal platforms of olefinic coordination polymers for precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms, and possible developments as comprehensively as possible. Numerous examples are presented to illustrate how the arrangements of the olefin pairs influence the solid-state photoreactivity and examine the types of cyclobutane products. Furthermore, the photocycloaddition reaction mechanisms are investigated by combining advanced techniques such as single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy and theoretical calculations. Finally, potential applications resulting from promising physicochemical properties before and after photoreactions are discussed, and existing challenges and possible solutions are also proposed.

Topochemistry for Difficult Peptide-Polymer Synthesis: Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Synthesis of an Isoleucine-Based Polymer, a Hydrophobic Coating Material

Polymers of hydrophobic amino acids are predicted to be potential coating materials for the creation of hydrophobic surfaces. The oligopeptides of hydrophobic amino acids are called "difficult peptides"; as the name suggests, it is difficult to synthesize them by conventional methods. We circumvented this synthetic challenge by adopting topochemical azide-alkyne cycloaddition (TAAC) polymerization of a hydrophobic dipeptide monomer. We designed an Ile-based dipeptide, decorated with azide and alkyne, which arrange in the crystal in a head-to-tail fashion with the azide and alkyne of the adjacent molecules in a ready-to-react orientation. The monomer, on mild heating of its crystals, undergoes regiospecific TAAC polymerization to yield a 1,4-disubstituted-triazole-linked polymer in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion. The solid obtained after evaporation of the monomer solution also maintained crystallinity and underwent regiospecific topochemical polymerization as in the case of crystals. This topochemical polymerization could be studied using different techniques such as FTIR, NMR, DSC, GPC, MALDI, PXRD, and SCXRD. Since the polymer is insoluble in common solvents and hence difficult to coat surfaces, the monomer was first sprayed and evaporated on various surfaces and polymerized on the surface. Such polymer-coated surfaces exhibited water contact angles of up to 134°, showing that this Ile-derived polymer is very hydrophobic and can potentially be used as a coating material for various applications.

One-Pot Synthesis, Circularly Polarized Luminescence, and Controlled Self-Assembly of Janus-Type Miktoarm Star Copolymers

With the aim of broadening the scope of Janus-type polymers with new functionalities, Janus-type miktoarm star copolymers comprising helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI) and a vinyl polymer were designed and synthesized via a combination of Pd(II)-initiated isocyanide polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A functional β-cyclodextrin bearing 7 Pd(II) complexes at one side and 14 bromine groups at the other side ((Pd(II))7-CD-(Br)14) was prepared and used as an initiator for the one-pot polymerization of phenyl isocyanide and the ATRP of vinyl monomers in a living and controlled manner. A variety of Janus-type copolymers with different structures and tunable compositions were facilely obtained by using this method. Thus, Janus-type copolymers composed of helical PPIs and tetraphenylethylene-modified vinyl polymers exhibited a significant circularly polarized luminescence performance in both soluble and aggregated states. Meanwhile, Janus-type copolymers containing PPIs and hydrophilic vinyl polymers presented amphiphilicity and self-assembled into diverse morphologies.

Single-Crystal One-Dimensional Porous Ladder Covalent Polymers

The synthesis of single-crystal, one-dimensional (1D) polymers is of great importance but a formidable challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of single-crystal 1D ladder polymers in solution by dynamic covalent chemistry. The three-dimensional electron diffraction technique was used to rigorously solve the structure of the crystalline polymers, unveiling that each polymer chain is connected by double covalent bridges and all polymer chains are packed in a staggered and interlaced manner by π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions, making the crystalline polymers highly robust in both thermal and chemical stability. The synthesized single-crystal polymers possess permanent micropores and can efficiently remove CO2 from the C2H2/CO2 mixture to obtain high-purity C2H2, validated by dynamic breakthrough experiments. This work demonstrates the first example of constructing single-crystal 1D porous ladder polymers with double covalent bridges in solution for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation.

Single-crystal polymers (SCPs): from 1D to 3D architectures

Single-crystal polymers (SCPs) with unambiguous chemical structures at atomic-level resolutions have attracted great attention. Obtaining precise structural information of these materials is critical as it enables a deeper understanding of the potential driving forces for specific packing and long-range order, secondary interactions, and kinetic and thermodynamic factors. Such information can ultimately lead to success in controlling the synthesis or engineering of their crystal structures for targeted applications, which could have far-reaching impact. Successful synthesis of SCPs with atomic level control of the structures, especially for those with 2D and 3D architectures, is rare. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the synthesis of SCPs, including 1D, 2D, and 3D architectures. Solution synthesis, topochemical synthesis, and extreme condition synthesis are summarized and compared. Around 70 examples of SCPs with unambiguous structure information are presented, and their synthesis methods and structural analysis are discussed. This review offers critical insights into the structure-property relationships, providing guidance for the future rational design and bottom-up synthesis of a variety of highly ordered polymers with unprecedented functions and properties.

Photosalience and Thermal Phase Transitions of Azobenzene- and Crown Ether-Based Complexes in Polymorphic Crystals

Stimuli-responsive molecular crystals have attracted considerable attention as promising smart materials with applications in various fields such as sensing, actuation, and optoelectronics. Understanding the structure-mechanical property relationships, however, remains largely unexplored when it comes to functionalizing these organic crystals. Here, we report three polymorphic crystals (Forms A, B, and C) formed by the non-threaded complexation of a dibenzo[18]crown-6 (DB18C6) ether ring and an azobenzene-based ammonium cation, each exhibiting distinct thermal phase transitions, photoinduced deformations, and mechanical behavior. Structural changes on going from Form A to Form B and from Form C to Form B during heating and cooling, respectively, are observed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Form A shows photoinduced reversible bending, whereas Form B exhibits isotropic expansion. Form C displays uniaxial negative expansion with a remarkable increase of 44% in thickness under photoirradiation. Force measurements and nanoindentation reveal that the soft crystals of Form A with a low elastic modulus demonstrate a significant photoresponse, attributed to the non-threaded molecular structure, which permits flexibility of the azobenzene unit. This work represents a significant advance in the understanding of the correlation between structure-thermomechanical and structure-photomechanical properties necessary for the development of multi-stimulus-responsive materials with tailored properties.

Recent Developments of Photodeformable Polymers: From Materials to Applications

Photodeformable polymer materials have a far influence in the fields of flexibility and intelligence. The stimulation energy is converted into mechanical energy through molecular synergy. Among kinds of photodeformable polymer materials, liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) photodeformable materials have been a hot topic in recent years. Chromophores such as azobenzene, α-cyanostilbene, and 9,10-dithiopheneanthracene have been widely used in LCP, which are helpful for designing functional molecules to increase the penetration depth of light to change physical properties. Due to the various applications of photodeformable polymer materials, there are many excellent reports in intelligent field. In this review, we have systematized LCP containing azobenzene into 3 categories depending on the degree of crosslinking liquid crystalline elastomers, liquid crystalline networks, and linear LCPs. Other structural, typical polymer materials and their applications are discussed. Current issues faced and future directions to be developed for photodeformable polymer materials are also summarized.

Water-Content-Dependent Switching of the Bending Behavior of Photoresponsive Hydrogels Composed of Hydrophilic Acrylamide-Based Main Chains and Hydrophobic Azobenzene

Photoresponsiveness is a promising characteristic of stimulus-responsive materials. Photoresponsiveness can be achieved by incorporating photoresponsive molecules into polymeric materials. In addition, multiple-stimuli-responsive materials have attracted scientists' interest. Among the numerous multiple-stimuli-responsive materials, moisture- and photoresponsive materials are the focus of this report. These stimuli-responsive materials responded to the stimuli synergistically or orthogonally. Unlike most stimulus-responsive materials utilizing moisture and light as stimuli, the materials studied herein switch their photoresponsiveness in the presence of moisture. Appropriate copolymers consisting of hydrophilic acrylamide-based monomers for the main chain and hydrophobic azobenzene moieties switched their bending behaviors at 6-9 wt% water contents. At water contents lower than 6 wt%, the polymeric materials bent away from the light source, while they bent toward the light source at water contents higher than 10 wt%. At a low water content, the bending behaviors can be described on the molecular scale. At a high water content, the bending behavior requires consideration of the phase scale, not only the molecular scale. By controlling the balance between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, the switching behavior was achieved. This switching behavior may inspire additional strategies for the application of polymeric material as actuators.

Photo-controllable heterostructured crystals of metal-organic frameworks via reversible photocycloaddition

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterostructures are attractive because they can provide versatile platforms for various applications but are limited by complex liquid epitaxial growth methods. Here, we employ photolithography to fabricate and control MOF-based heterostructured crystals via [4 + 4] photocycloaddition. A layered dysprosium-dianthracene framework, [Dy(NO3)3(depma2)1.5]·(depma2)0.5 (2) [depma2 = pre-photodimerized 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma)] underwent a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition at 140 °C to form [Dy(NO3)3(depma)(depma2)]·(depma2)0.5 (3). The dissociated anthracene moieties are face-to-face π-π interacted allowing a reversible photocycloaddition between 2 and 3. This structural transformation causes a luminescence switch between blue and yellow-green and thus can be used to fabricate erasable 2 + 3 heterostructured crystals for rewritable photonic barcodes. The internal strain at the heterostructure interface leads to photobending and straightening of the crystal, a photomechanical response that is fast, reversible and durable, even operating at 140 °C, making it promising for photoactuation. This work may inspire the development of intelligent MOF-based heterostructures for photonic applications.

Photocontrollable Magnetism and Photoluminescence in a Binuclear Dysprosium Anthracene Complex

By incorporating photoreactive anthracene moieties into binuclear Dy₂O₂ motifs, we obtain two new compounds with the formulas [Dy₂(SCN)₄(L)₂(dmpma)₄] (1) and [Dy₂(SCN)₄(L)₂(dmpma)₂(CH₃CN)₂] (2), where HL is 4-methyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol and dmpma is dimethylphosphonomethylanthracene. Compound 1 contains face-to-face π-π interacted anthracene groups that meet the Schmidt rule for a [4 + 4] photocycloaddition reaction, while stacking of the anthracene groups in compound 2 does not meet the Schmidt rule. Compound 1 undergoes a reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation upon UV-light irradiation and thermal annealing, forming a one-dimensional coordination polymer of [Dy₂(SCN)₄(L)₂(dmpma)₂(dmpma₂)]_n (1UV). The process is concomitant with changes in the magnetic dynamics and photoluminescent properties. The spin-reversal energy barrier is significantly increased from 1 (55.9 K) to 1UV (116 K), and the emission color is changed from bright yellow for 1 to weak blue for 1UV. This is the first binuclear lanthanide complex that exhibits synergistic photocontrollable magnetic dynamics and photoluminescence. Ab initio calculations are conducted to understand the magnetostructural relationships of compounds 1, 1UV, and 2.

Engineering Covalent Organic Frameworks with Polyethylene Glycol as Self-Sustained Humidity-Responsive Actuators

Regarding the global energy crisis, it is of profound significance to develop spontaneous power generators that harvest natural energy. Fabricating humidity-responsive actuators that can conduct such energy transduction is of paramount importance. Herein, we incorporate covalent organic frameworks with flexible polyethylene glycol to fabricate rigid-flexible coupled membrane actuators. This strategy significantly improves the mechanical properties and humidity-responsive performance of the actuators, meanwhile, the existence of ordered structures enables us to unveil the actuation mechanism. These high-performance actuators can achieve various actuation applications and exhibit interesting self-oscillation behavior above a water surface. Finally, after being coupled with a piezoelectric film, the bilayer device can spontaneously output electricity over 2 days. This work paves a new avenue to fabricate rigid-flexible coupled actuators for self-sustained energy transduction.

Stimuli-Responsive Crystalline Smart Materials: From Rational Design and Fabrication to Applications

Stimuli-responsive smart materials that can undergo reversible chemical/physical changes under external stimuli such as mechanical stress, heat, light, gas, electricity, and pH, are currently attracting increasing attention in the fields of sensors, actuators, optoelectronic devices, information storage, medical applications, and so forth. The current smart materials mostly concentrate on polymers, carbon materials, crystalline liquids, and hydrogels, which have no or low structural order (i.e., the responsive groups/moieties are disorderly in the structures), inevitably introducing deficiencies such as a relatively low response speeds, energy transformation inefficiencies, and unclear structure-property relationships. Consequently, crystalline materials with well-defined and regular molecular arrays can offer a new opportunity to create novel smart materials with improved stimuli-responsive performance. Crystalline materials include framework materials (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, MOFs; covalent organic frameworks, COFs) and molecular crystals (e.g., organic molecules and molecular cages), which have obvious advantages as smart materials compared to amorphous materials. For example, responsive groups/moieties can be uniformly installed in the skeleton of the crystal materials to form ordered molecular arrays, making energy transfer between external-stimulus signals and responsive sites much faster and more efficiently. Besides that, the well-defined structures facilitate in situ characterization of their structural transformation at the molecular level by means of various techniques and high-tech equipment such as in situ spectra and single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, thus benefiting the investigation and understanding of the mechanism behind the stimuli-responsive behaviors and structure-property relationships. Nevertheless, some unsolved challenges remain for crystalline smart materials (CSMs), hampering the fabrication of smart material systems for practical applications. For instance, as the materials' crystallinity increases, their processability and mechanical properties usually decrease, unavoidably hindering their practical application. Moreover, crystalline smart materials mostly exist as micro/nanosized powders, which are difficult to make stimuli-responsive on the macroscale. Thus, developing strategies that can balance the materials' crystallinity and processability and establishing macroscale smart material systems are of great significance for practical applications.In this Account, we mainly summarize the recent research progress achieved by our groups, including (i) the rational design and fabrication of new stimuli-responsive crystalline smart materials, including molecular crystals and framework materials, and an in-depth investigation of their response mechanism and structure-property relationship and (ii) creating chemical/physical modification strategies to improve the processability and mechanical properties for crystalline materials and establishing macroscale smart systems for practical applications. Overall, this Account summarizes the state-of-the-art progress of stimuli-responsive crystalline smart materials and points out the existing challenges and future development directions in the field.

Sectorization of Macromolecular Single Crystals Unveiled by Probing Shear Anisotropy

Polymer single crystals continue to infiltrate emerging technologies such as flexible organic field-effect transistors because of their excellent translational symmetry and chemical purity. However, owing to the methodological challenges, direct imaging of the polymer chains folding direction resulting in sectorization of single crystals has rarely been investigated. Herein, we directly image the sectorization of polymer single crystals through anisotropic elastic deformation on the surface of macromolecular single crystals. A variant of friction force microscopy, in which the scanning direction of the probe tip is parallel with the cantilever axis, allows for high contrast imaging of the sectorization in polymer single crystals. The lateral deflection of the cantilever resulting from shear forces transverse to the scan direction shows a close connection with the in-plane components of the elastic tensor of the polymer single crystals, which is of a fundamentally different origin than the friction forces. This allows for fast, facile, and nondestructive characterization of the microstructure and in-plane elastic anisotropy of compliant crystalline materials such as polymers.

Recent Development of Photodeformable Crystals: From Materials to Mechanisms

Photodeformable materials are a class of molecules that can convert photon energy into mechanical energy, which have attracted tremendous attention in the last few decades. Owing to their unique photoinduced deformable properties, including fast light-response and diverse mechanical behaviors, photodeformable materials have exhibited great potential in many practical applications such as actuators, photoswitches, artificial muscles, and bioimaging. In this review, we sort out the current state of photodeformable crystals and classify them into six categories by molecular structures: diarylethenes, azobenzenes, anthracenes, olefins, triarylethylenes, and other systems. Three distinct light-responsive mechanisms, photocyclization, trans-cis isomerization, and photodimerization, are revealed to play significant roles in the molecular photodeformation. Their corresponding photodeformable behaviors such as twisting, bending, hopping, bursting, and curling, as well as the potential applications, are also discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospective development directions of photodeformable crystals are highlighted.

Fabrication of Moisture-Responsive Crystalline Smart Materials for Water Harvesting and Electricity Transduction

It is of profound significance with regard to the global energy crisis to develop new techniques and materials that can convert the chemical potential of water into other forms of energy, especially electricity. To address this challenge, we built a new type of energy transduction pathway (humidity gradients → mechanical work → electrical power) using moisture-responsive crystalline materials as the media for energy transduction. Single-crystal data revealed that a flexible zeolitic pyrimidine framework material, ZPF-2-Co, could undergo a reversible structural transformation (β to α phase) with a large unit cell change upon moisture stimulus. Dynamic water vapor sorption analysis showed a gate-opening effect with a steep uptake at as low as 10% relative humidity (RH). The scalable green synthesis approach and the fast water vapor adsorption-desorption kinetics made ZPF-2-Co an excellent sorbent to harvest water from arid air, as verified by real water-harvesting experiments. Furthermore, we created a gradient distribution strategy to fabricate polymer-hybridized mechanical actuators based on ZPF-2-Co that could perform reversible bending deformation upon a variation of the humidity gradient. This mechanical actuator showed remarkable durability and reusability. Finally, coupling the moisture-responsive actuator with a piezoelectric transducer further converted the mechanical work into electrical power. This work offers a new type of moisture-responsive smart material for energy transduction and provides an in-depth understanding of the responsive mechanism at the molecular level.

Thermo- and light-triggered reversible interconversion of dysprosium-anthracene complexes and their responsive optical, magnetic and dielectric properties

Artificial smart materials with switchable multifunctionality are of immense interest owing to their wide application in sensors, displays and memory devices. Lanthanide complexes are promising multifunctional materials integrating optical and magnetic characteristics. However, synergistic manipulation of different physical properties in lanthanide systems is still challenging. Herein we designed and synthesized a mononuclear complex [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1), which incorporates 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma) as a photo-active component and 4-hydroxypyridine (4-hpy) as a polar component. This compound shows several unusual features: (a) reversible thermo-responsive phase transition associated with the order-disorder transition of 4-hpy and SCN-, which leads to thermochromic behavior and dielectric anomaly; (b) reversible photo-induced dimerization of anthracene groups, which leads to synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example of lanthanide complexes that show stimuli-triggered synergistic and reversible switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.
