Scalable Synthesis of Tungsten Disulfide Nanosheets for Alkali-Acid Electrocatalytic Sulfion Recycling and H2 Generation

Energy-saving hydrogen production from sulfion oxidation-hybrid seawater splitting enabled by superwettable corrosion-resistant NiFe layered double hydroxide/FeNi2S4 heterostructured nanoarrays

Electrochemical seawater splitting is a sustainable pathway towards hydrogen production independent of scarce freshwater resources. However, the high energy consumption and harmful chlorine-chemistry interference still pose major technological challenges. Herein, thermodynamically more favorable sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR) is explored to replace energy-intensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER), enabling the dramatically reduced energy consumption and the avoidance of corrosive chlorine species in electrocatalytic systems of NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/FeNi2S4 grown on iron foam (IF) substrate. The resulting NiFe-LDH/FeNi2S4/IF with superwettable surfaces and favorable heterointerfaces can effectively catalyze SOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which greatly reduces the operational voltage by 1.05 V at 50 mA cm-2 compared to pure seawater splitting and achieves impressively low electricity consumption of 2.33 kW h per cubic meter of H2 at 100 mA cm-2. Significantly, benefitting from the repulsive effect of surface sulfate anions to Cl-, the NiFe-LDH/FeNi2S4/IF exhibits outstanding long-term stability for SOR-coupled chlorine-free hydrogen production with sulfion upcycling into elemental sulfur. The present study uncovers the "killing two birds with one stone" effect of SOR for energy-efficient hydrogen generation and value-added elemental sulfur recovery in seawater electrolysis without detrimental chlorine chemistry.

Partially Amorphous Ru-Doped CoSe Nanoparticles with Optimized Intermediates Adsorption for Highly Efficient Sulfur Oxidation Reaction

The application of thermodynamically more favorable sulfur oxidation reaction (SOR) to replace oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrocatalytic water electrolysis is an appealing strategy to achieve low-energy hydrogen production while removing toxic sulfur ions from wastewater. However, the study of SOR catalysts with both activity and stability still faces great challenges. Herein, this study prepares partially amorphous Ru-doped CoSe (pa-Ru-CoSe) nanoparticles for SOR. The doping of Ru keeps Co in an electron-deficient state, which enhances the adsorption of SOR intermediates and improves the catalytic activity. Meanwhile, the partially amorphous selenide possesses great corrosion resistance to sulfur species, thus ensuring stability in long-term SOR. In addition, the pa-Ru-CoSe requires only 0.566 V to reach a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in the SOR-HER coupled system and remains stable for 200 h. This work provides a promising partially amorphous strategy for SOR catalysts with both catalytic activity and long-term stability, enabling hydrogen production with low energy consumption and simultaneous sulfur production.

Tailoring the d-Band Center of WS2 by Metal and Nonmetal Dual-Doping for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Tuning the adsorption energy of nitrogen intermediates and lowering the reaction energy barrier is essential to accelerate the kinetics of nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), yet remains a great challenge. Herein, the electronic structure of WS2 is tailored based on a metal and nonmetal dual-doping strategy (denoted Fe, F-WS2) to lower the d-band center of W in order to optimize the adsorption of nitrogen intermediates. The obtained Fe, F-WS2 nanosheet catalyst presents a high Faradic efficiency (FE) of 22.42% with a NH3 yield rate of 91.46 µg h-1 mgcat. -1. The in situ characterizations and DFT simulations consistently show the enhanced activity is attributed to the downshift of the d-band center, which contributes to the rate-determining step of the second protonation to form N2H2 * key intermediates, thereby boosting the overall nitrogen electrocatalysis reaction kinetics. This work opens a new avenue to enhanced electrocatalysis by modulating the electronic structure and surrounding microenvironment of the catalytic metal centers.

High-Entropy Sulfide Catalyst Boosts Energy-Saving Electrochemical Sulfion Upgrading to Thiosulfate Coupled with Hydrogen Production

Electrochemical sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR) offers a sustainable strategy for sulfion-rich wastewater treatment, which can couple with cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for energy-saving hydrogen production. However, the corrosion and passivation of sulfur species render the inferior catalytic SOR performance, and the oxidation product, polysulfide, requires further acidification to recover cheap elementary sulfur. Here, we reported an amorphous high-entropy sulfide catalyst of CuCoNiMnCrSx nanosheets in situ growth on the nickel foam (CuCoNiMnCrSx/NF) for SOR, which achieved an ultra-low potential of 0.25 V to afford 100 mA cm-2, and stable electrolysis at as high as 1 A cm-2 for 100 h. These were endowed by the manipulated chemical environments surrounding Cu+ sites and the constructed "soft-acid" to "hard-acid" adsorption/desorption sites, enabling synergistically boosted adsorption/desorption process of sulfur species during SOR. Moreover, we developed an electrochemical-chemical tandem process to convert sulfions to value-added thiosulfate, providing a good choice for simultaneous wastewater utilization and hydrogen production.

Energy-saving hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis coupling tip-enhanced electric field promoted electrocatalytic sulfion oxidation

Hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis is significantly hindered by high energy costs and undesirable detrimental chlorine chemistry in seawater. In this work, energy-saving hydrogen production is reported by chlorine-free seawater splitting coupling tip-enhanced electric field promoted electrocatalytic sulfion oxidation reaction. We present a bifunctional needle-like Co3S4 catalyst grown on nickel foam with a unique tip structure that enhances the kinetic rate by improving the current density in the tip region. The assembled hybrid seawater electrolyzer combines thermodynamically favorable sulfion oxidation and cathodic seawater reduction can enable sustainable hydrogen production at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for up to 504 h. The hybrid seawater electrolyzer has the potential for scale-up industrial implementation of hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis, which is promising to achieve high economic efficiency and environmental remediation.

Seawater electrolysis for fuels and chemicals production: fundamentals, achievements, and perspectives

Seawater electrolysis for the production of fuels and chemicals involved in onshore and offshore plants powered by renewable energies offers a promising avenue and unique advantages for energy and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, seawater electrolysis presents long-term challenges and issues, such as complex composition, potential side reactions, deposition of and poisoning by microorganisms and metal ions, as well as corrosion, thus hindering the rapid development of seawater electrolysis technology. This review focuses on the production of value-added fuels (hydrogen and beyond) and fine chemicals through seawater electrolysis, as a promising step towards sustainable energy development and carbon neutrality. The principle of seawater electrolysis and related challenges are first introduced, and the redox reaction mechanisms of fuels and chemicals are summarized. Strategies for operating anodes and cathodes including the development and application of chloride- and impurity-resistant electrocatalysts/membranes are reviewed. We comprehensively summarize the production of fuels and chemicals (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, sulfur, ammonia, etc.) at the cathode and anode via seawater electrolysis, and propose other potential strategies for co-producing fine chemicals, even sophisticated and electronic chemicals. Seawater electrolysis can drive the oxidation and upgrading of industrial pollutants or natural organics into value-added chemicals or degrade them into harmless substances, which would be meaningful for environmental protection. Finally, the perspective and prospects are outlined to address the challenges and expand the application of seawater electrolysis.

NiO/RuO2 p-n Heterojunction Nanofoam as a High-Performance Electrocatalyst for Desulfurization and Concurrent Hydrogen Evolution

The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and sulfide oxidation reaction (SOR) remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we experimentally synthesize a NiO/RuO2 p-n heterojunction nanofoam that exhibits highly desirable electrocatalytic properties for both the HER and the SOR. We further design an electrolytic cell by pairing alkaline HER with SOR utilizing the NiO/RuO2 heterojunction nanofoam as both the anode and the cathode, which demands a low applied voltage of 0.846 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the formation of the NiO/RuO2 p-n heterojunction nanofoam effectively regulates the electronic structure, thereby boosting the electrocatalytic performances for both HER and SOR. This work not only provides a novel strategy to prepare an efficient and stable nanofoam electrocatalyst for hydrogen production but also highlights the potential application of oxide heterojunction electrocatalysts in treating sulfur-containing waste liquid.

Trifunctional phosphorus-doped cobalt molybdate catalyst in self-driven coupling systems for synchronized sulfur recovery and hydrogen evolution

This study introduces a self-driven system that effectively achieves synchronized sulfur recovery and hydrogen production using a Zn-air battery. The system ingeniously integrates the sulfur oxidation reaction (SOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) into a single, efficient process. Central to this system is the trifunctional phosphorus-doped cobalt molybdate catalyst (P-CoMoO4/NF), which exhibits superior performance in both HER (ηj = 100 = 0.13 V) and SOR (ηj = 100 = 0.30 V) with remarkable stability (∼360 h), reaching 0.64 V at 100 mA cm-2 for simultaneous sulfur ion degradation and hydrogen production. Through density functional theory simulations and extensive characterizations, it has been shown that phosphorus doping in the cobalt molybdate catalyst facilitates electron redistribution, enhancing the catalyst's conductivity, generating more oxygen vacancies, and promoting improved mass and electron transfer. This modification also lowers the energy barrier for adsorbing reaction intermediates, thus increasing the hydrogen production rate and sulfur oxide conversion in this self-powered system. In summary, this research marks a substantial advancement in the development of trifunctional catalysts and proposes an eco-friendly, cost-effective strategy for integrated reaction systems, paving the way for sustainable energy solutions.

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall and Hybrid Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable electricity has been recognized as a promising approach for green hydrogen production. Different from conventional strategies in developing electrocatalysts for the two half-reactions of water splitting (e.g., the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, HER and OER) separately, there has been a growing interest in designing and developing bifunctional electrocatalysts, which are able to catalyze both the HER and OER. In addition, considering the high overpotentials required for OER while limited value of the produced oxygen, there is another rapidly growing interest in exploring alternative oxidation reactions to replace OER for hybrid water splitting toward energy-efficient hydrogen generation. This Review begins with an introduction on the fundamental aspects of water splitting, followed by a thorough discussion on various physicochemical characterization techniques that are frequently employed in probing the active sites, with an emphasis on the reconstruction of bifunctional electrocatalysts during redox electrolysis. The design, synthesis, and performance of diverse bifunctional electrocatalysts based on noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal-free nanocarbons, for overall water splitting in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are thoroughly summarized and compared. Next, their application toward hybrid water splitting is also presented, wherein the alternative anodic reactions include sacrificing agents oxidation, pollutants oxidative degradation, and organics oxidative upgrading. Finally, a concise statement on the current challenges and future opportunities of bifunctional electrocatalysts for both overall and hybrid water splitting is presented in the hope of guiding future endeavors in the quest for energy-efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production.

Highly efficient electrochemical ammonia synthesis via nitrate reduction over metallic Cu phase coupling sulfion oxidation

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is a promising technology for ammonia production and denitrification of wastewater. Its application is seriously restricted by the development of the highly active and selective electrocatalyst and a rational electrolysis system. Here, we constructed an efficient electrochemical ammonia production process via nitrate reduction on the metallic Cu electrocatalyst when coupled with anodic sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR). The synthesized Cu catalyst delivers an excellent NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 96.0 % and a NH3 yield of 0.391 mmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, which mainly stem from the more favorable conversion of NO2 - to NH3 on Cu0. Importantly, the well-designed electrolysis system with cathodic NO3RR and anodic SOR achieves a dramatically reduced cell voltage of 0.8 V at 50 mA cm-2 in comparison with the one with anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of 1.9 V. This work presents an effective strategy for the energy-saving ammonia production via constructing effective nitrate reduction catalyst and replacing the OER with SOR while removing the pollutants including nitrate and sulfion.

Hydrogen Production via Electrolysis of Wastewater

The high energy consumption of traditional water splitting to produce hydrogen is mainly due to complex oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where low-economic-value O2 gas is generated. Meanwhile, cogeneration of H2 and O2 may result in the formation of an explosive H2/O2 gas mixture due to gas crossover. Considering these factors, a favorable anodic oxidation reaction is employed to replace OER, which not only reduces the voltage for H2 production at the cathode and avoids H2/O2 gas mixture but also generates value-added products at the anode. In recent years, this innovative strategy that combines anodic oxidation for H2 production has received intensive attention in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, the latest research progress of a coupled hydrogen production system with pollutant degradation/upgrading is systematically introduced. Firstly, wastewater purification via anodic reaction, which produces free radicals instead of OER for pollutant degradation, is systematically presented. Then, the coupled system that allows for pollutant refining into high-value-added products combined with hydrogen production is displayed. Thirdly, the photoelectrical system for pollutant degradation and upgrade are briefly introduced. Finally, this review also discusses the challenges and future perspectives of this coupled system.

The dual built-in electric fields across CoS/MoS2 heterojunctions for energy-saving hydrogen production coupled with sulfion degradation

Substituting the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction with the sulfur oxidation reaction can significantly reduce energy consumption and eliminate environmental pollutants during hydrogen generation. However, the progress of this technology has been hindered due to the lack of cost-effective, efficient, and durable electrocatalysts. In this study, we present the design and construction of a hierarchical metal sulfide catalyst with a gradient structure comprising nanoparticles, nanosheets, and microparticles. This was achieved through a structure-breaking sulfuration strategy, resulting in a "ball of yarn"-like core/shell CoS/MoS2 microflower with CoS/MoS2/CoS dual-heterojunctions. The difference in work functions between CoS and MoS2 induces an electron polarization effect, creating dual built-in electric fields at the hierarchical interfaces. This effectively modulates the adsorption behavior of catalytic intermediates, thereby reducing the energy barrier for catalytic reactions. The optimized catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction and the sulfur oxidation reaction. Remarkably, in the assembled electrocatalytic coupling system, it only requires a cell voltage of 0.528 V at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains long-term durability for over 168 h. This work presents new opportunities for low-cost hydrogen production and environmentally friendly sulfion recycling.

Coupling Electrochemical Sulfion Oxidation with CO2 Reduction over Highly Dispersed p-Bi Nanosheets and CO2 -Assisted Sulfur Extraction

We report herein an electrocatalytic CO2 reduction-coupled sulfion oxidation system for the co-productions of valuable formate and sulfur at much enhanced atom utilization. Specifically, an organic ligand-assisted two-step reconstruction approach has been developed to fabricate the highly dispersed p-Bi nanosheets (p-Bi NSs) for cathodic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), and meanwhile porous Co-S nanosheets (Co-S NSs) was applied for anodic sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR). Significantly high Faradaic Efficiencies of about 90 % for formate production by CO2 RR in a wide potential range from -0.6 V to -1.1 V, and excellent SOR performances including an ultra-low onset potential of about 0.2 V and recycle capacity of S2- in the 0.1 M and 0.5 M S2- solutions, have been simultaneously achieved. In the meantime, both the structure transformation of the catalysts and the reaction pathways are explored and discussed in detail. A two-electrode CO2 RR||SOR electrolyzer equipped with above electrocatalysts has been established, which features as low as about 1.5 V to run the electrolyzer at 100 mA cm-2 , manifesting extremely lowered electricity consumption in comparison to conventional CO2 RR system. Moreover, a sulfur separation approach has been proposed by using CO2 , which is efficient, environmentally friendly and cost effective with value-added NaHCO3 be obtained as the byproduct.

Recent Advancements in Electrochemical Hydrogen Production via Hybrid Water Splitting

As one of the most promising approaches to producing high-purity hydrogen (H2 ), electrochemical water splitting powered by the renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power has attracted considerable interest over the past decade. However, the water electrolysis process is seriously hampered by the sluggish electrode reaction kinetics, especially the four-electron oxygen evolution reaction at the anode side, which induces a high reaction overpotential. Currently, the emerging hybrid electrochemical water splitting strategy is proposed by integrating thermodynamically favorable electro-oxidation reactions with hydrogen evolution reaction at the cathode, providing a new opportunity for energy-efficient H2 production. To achieve highly efficient and cost-effective hybrid water splitting toward large-scale practical H2 production, much work has been continuously done to exploit the alternative anodic oxidation reactions and cutting-edge electrocatalysts. This review will focus on recent developments on electrochemical H2 production coupled with alternative oxidation reactions, including the choice of anodic substrates, the investigation on electrocatalytic materials, and the deep understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms. Finally, some insights into the scientific challenges now standing in the way of future advancement of the hybrid water electrolysis technique are shared, in the hope of inspiring further innovative efforts in this rapidly growing field.

Interfacial and Electronic Modulation of W Bridging Heterostructure Between WS2 and Cobalt-Based Compounds for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

The development of high performance electrocatalysts for effective hydrogen production is urgently needed. Herein, three hybrid catalysts formed by WS2 and Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives are constructed, in which the small amount of W in the MOFs derivatives acts as a bridge to provide the charge transfer channel and enhance the stability. In addition, the effects of the surface charge distribution on the catalytic performance are fully investigated. Due to the optimal interfacial electron coupling and rearrangement as well as its unique porous morphology, WS2 @W-CoPx exhibits superior bifunctional performance in alkaline media with low overpotentials in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (62 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (278 mV at 100 mA cm-2 ). For overall water splitting (OWS), WS2 @W-CoPx only requires a cell voltage of 1.78 V at 50 mA cm-2 and maintains good stability within 72 h. Density functional theory calculations verify that the combination of W-CoPx with WS2 can effectively enhance the activity of OER and HER with weakened OH (or O) adsorption and enhanced H atom adsorption. This work provides a feasible idea for the design and practical application of WS2 or phosphide-based catalysts in OWS.

Self-Powered Hydrogen Production with Improved Energy Efficiency via Polysulfides Redox

In the pursuit of efficient solar-driven electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, the intrinsic challenges posed by the sluggish kinetics of anodic oxygen evolution and intermittent sunlight have prompted the need for innovative energy systems. Here, we introduce an approach by coupling the polysulfides oxidation reaction with the hydrogen evolution reaction for energy-saving H2 production, which could be powered by an aqueous zinc-polysulfides battery to construct a self-powered energy system. This unusual hybrid water electrolyzer achieves 300 mA cm-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.14 V, saving electricity consumption by 100.4% from 5.47 to 2.73 kWh per m3 H2 compared to traditional overall water splitting. Benefiting from the favorable reaction kinetics of polysulfides oxidation/reduction, the aqueous zinc-polysulfides battery exhibits an energy efficiency of approximately 89% at 1.0 mA cm-2. Specially, the zinc-polysulfide battery effectively stores intermittent solar energy as chemical energy during light reaction by solar cells. Under an unassisted light reaction, the batteries could release energy to drive H2 production through a hybrid water electrolyzer for uninterrupted hydrogen production. Therefore, the aim of simultaneously generating H2 and eliminating the restrictions of intermittent sunlight is realized by combining the merits of polysulfides redox, an aqueous metal-polysulfide battery, and solar cells. We believe that this concept and utilization of polysulfides redox will inspire further fascinating attempts for the development of sustainable energy via electrocatalytic reactions.

Sulfion oxidation assisting self-powered hydrogen production system based on efficient catalysts from spent lithium-ion batteries

Converting spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and industrial wastewater into high-value-added substances by advanced electrocatalytic technology is important for sustainable energy development and environmental protection. Here, we propose a self-powered system using a home-made sulfide fuel cell (SFC) to power a two-electrode electrocatalytic sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR)-assisted hydrogen (H2) production electrolyzer (ESHPE), in which the sulfion-containing wastewater is used as the liquid fuel to produce clean water, sulfur, and hydrogen. The catalysts for the self-powered system are mainly prepared from spent LIBs to reduce the cost, such as the bifunctional Co9S8 catalyst was prepared from spent LiCoO2 for SOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Fe-N-P codoped coral-like carbon nanotube arrays encapsulated Fe2P (C-ZIF/sLFP) catalyst was prepared from spent LiFePO4 for oxygen reduction reaction. The Co9S8 catalyst shows excellent catalytic activities in both SOR and HER, evidenced by the low cell voltage of 0.426 V at 20 mA cm-2 in ESHPE. The SFC with Co9S8 as anode and C-ZIF/sLFP as cathode exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 0.69 V and long discharge stability for 300 h at 20 mA cm-2. By integrating the SFC and ESHPE, the self-powered system delivers an impressive hydrogen production rate of 0.44 mL cm-2 min-1. This work constructs a self-powered system with high-performance catalysts prepared from spent LIBs to transform sulfion-containing wastewater into purified water and prepare hydrogen, which is promising to achieve high economic efficiency, environmental remediation, and sustainable development.

Constructing Fully-Active and Ultra-Active Sites in High-Entropy Alloy Nanoclusters for Hydrazine Oxidation-Assisted Electrolytic Hydrogen Production

The development of sufficiently high-efficiency systems and effective catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production is of great significance but challenging. Here, high-entropy alloy nanoclusters (HEANCs) with full-active sites and super-active sites are innovatively constructed for hydrazine oxidation-assisted electrolytic hydrogen production. The HEANCs show an average size of only seven atomic layers (1.48 nm). As the catalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrazine oxidation reaction, the HEANC/C exhibits the best-level performance among reported electrocatalysts. Especially, the HEANC/C achieves an ultrahigh mass activity of 12.85 A mg-1 noble metals at -0.07 V and overpotential of only 9.5 mV for 10 mA cm-2 for alkaline HER. Further, with HEANC/C as both anode and cathode catalysts, an overall hydrazine oxidation-assisted splitting (OHzS) electrolyzer shows a record mass activity of 250.2 mA mg-1 catalysts at 0.1 V and only requires working voltages of 0.025 and 0.181 V to reach 10 and 100 mA cm-2 , respectively, outperforming those of overall water-splitting system and other reported chemicals-assisted hydrogen production systems. Active site libraries including 72 sites on HEANC surface are originally constructed by theoretical calculations, revealing that all sites on HEANC surface are effective active sites for OHzS; especially some are super-active sites, endowing the best-level performance of HEANC/C.

Influence of PEGylation on WS2 Nanosheets and Its Application in Photothermal Therapy

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is an alternative cancer therapy with minimal side effects and higher efficiency and selectivity. In this study, WS2 nanosheets were developed by ultrasonic exfoliation with different ratios of polyethylene glycol (PEG), and their effects on physicochemical properties were studied. The utilization of PEG during sonication significantly influenced the size and thickness of the resulting WS2 nanosheet layers, which was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic light scattering analyses. PEG functionalization also improved the dispersibility of WS2 in aqueous solution by making its surface hydrophilic, which resulted in better biocompatibility. The intrinsic near-infrared absorbance of the nanosheets positions them as valuable agents for PTT. The study further explores the efficacy of these nanosheets as photothermal agents in the ablation of MDAMB-231 breast cancer cells. Although the use of PEG to demonstrate exfoliation and biocompatibility for WS2 has been reported previously, the effect of PEGylation on various physicochemical properties has not been studied in-depth until now. This study paves the way for the use of highly versatile PEG across a range of 2D material systems.

Dual Atoms (Fe, F) Co-Doping Inducing Electronic Structure Modulation of NiO Hollow Flower-Spheres for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution/Sulfion Oxidation Reaction Performance

Heteroatoms Fe, F co-doped NiO hollow spheres (Fe, F-NiO) are designed, which simultaneously integrate promoted thermodynamics by electronic structure modulation with boosted reaction kinetics by nano-architectonics. Benefiting from the electronic structure co-regulation of Ni sites by introducing Fe and F atoms in NiO , as the rate-determined step (RDS), the Gibbs free energy of OH* intermediates (ΔGOH* ) for Fe, F-NiO catalyst is significantly decreased to 1.87 eV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) compared with pristine NiO (2.23 eV), which reduces the energy barrier and improves the reaction activity. Besides, densities of states (DOS) result verifies the bandgap of Fe, F-NiO(100) is significantly decreased compared with pristine NiO(100), which is beneficial to promote electrons transfer efficiency in electrochemical system. Profiting by the synergistic effect, the Fe, F-NiO hollow spheres only require the overpotential of 215 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2 and extraordinary durability under alkaline condition. The assembled Fe, F-NiO||Fe-Ni2 P system only needs 1.51 V to reach 10 mA cm-2 , also exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic durability for continuous operation. More importantly, replacing the sluggish OER by advanced sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR) not only can realize the energy saving H2 production and toxic substances degradation, but also bring additional economic benefits.

Cooperative Ni(Co)-Ru-P Sites Activate Dehydrogenation for Hydrazine Oxidation Assisting Self-powered H2 Production

Water electrolysis for H2 production is restricted by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Using the thermodynamically more favorable hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) to replace OER has attracted ever-growing attention. Herein, we report a twisted NiCoP nanowire array immobilized with Ru single atoms (Ru1 -NiCoP) as superior bifunctional electrocatalyst toward both HzOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), realizing an ultralow working potential of -60 mV and overpotential of 32 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , respectively. Inspiringly, two-electrode electrolyzer based on overall hydrazine splitting (OHzS) demonstrates outstanding activity with a record-high current density of 522 mA cm-2 at cell voltage of 0.3 V. DFT calculations elucidate the cooperative Ni(Co)-Ru-P sites in Ru1 -NiCoP optimize H* adsorption, and enhance adsorption of *N2 H2 to significantly lower the energy barrier for hydrazine dehydrogenation. Moreover, a self-powered H2 production system utilizing OHzS device driven by direct hydrazine fuel cell (DHzFC) achieve a satisfactory rate of 24.0 mol h-1  m-2 .

Investigation on the Mechanical Properties and Strengthening Mechanism of Solid-Waste-Sulfur-Based Cementitious Composites

This research used waste ceramic powder (CP) to replace aggregate, fly ash (FA) as filler, and combined them with sulfur to prepare composite cementitious materials. The variations of the mechanical properties with the aggregate proportions (aggregate mass/total mass) of 65%, 70%, and 75%, and the FA contents (FA mass/aggregate and filler mass) of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% were studied. The correlation evaluation model of sulfur content, CP content, FA content, and mechanical properties was established using the gray correlation theory, and the comprehensive mechanical property evaluation model was established as the foundation of the entropy method. Finally, the optimum proportion of the solid-waste-sulfur-based cementitious composites was determined. Results showed that, without FA, the CP increased from 65% to 75% and the comprehensive mechanical properties of the specimen increased by 60.53%. After FA was added, the peak point of the comprehensive mechanical properties appeared in group S75F10, which was 0.9210. During the hardening of the cementitious material, sulfur was mainly used as a binder, CP played the role of skeleton and part of the filler, whereas, as a crystal nucleus, the FA promoted the transformation of the sulfur crystals. Both the CP and FA can reduce the porosity of the specimen to a certain extent and have potential defect repair ability, thus densifying the matrix and improving the strength. When the proportion of sulfur: CP: FA is 1:2.7:0.3, the flexural (FS), compressive (CS), and splitting tensile (STS) strengths of the specimen are 14.8, 86.2, and 6.8 MPa, respectively. The flexural (FCR) and tensile (TCR) compression ratios are 0.172 and 0.079, respectively.

Fully Flexible MXene-based Gas Sensor on Paper for Highly Sensitive Room-Temperature Nitrogen Dioxide Detection

Flexible chemiresistive gas sensors have attracted growing interest due to their capability in real-time and rapid detection of gas. However, the performance of gas sensors has long been hindered by the poor charge transfer ability between the conventional metal electrode and gas sensing semiconductors. Herein, for the first time, a fully flexible paper-based gas sensor integrated with the Ti₃C₂T_x-MXene nonmetallic electrode and the Ti₃C₂T_x/WS₂ gas sensing film was designed to form Ohmic contact and Schottky heterojunction in a single gas sensing channel. Ti₃C₂T_x/WS₂ has outstanding physical and chemical properties for both Ti₃C₂T_x and WS₂ nanoflakes, showing high conductivity, effective charge transfer, and abundant active sites for gas sensing. The response of the gas sensor to NO₂ (1 ppm) at room temperature is 15.2%, which is about 3.2 and 76.0 times as high as that of the Au interdigital electrode integrated with the Ti₃C₂T_x/WS₂ sensor (4.8%) and the MXene electrode integrated with the Ti₃C₂T_x sensor (0.2%), respectively. Besides, this design performed at a limit of detection with 11.0 ppb NO₂ gas and displayed excellent stability under high humidities. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculation results, the improvement of the gas sensing performance can be mainly attributed to the heterojunction regulation effect, work function matching, and suppressing metal-induced gap states. This work provides a new approach for the design of flexible gas sensors on paper with MXene-based conductive electrodes and gas sensing materials.

Sulfur Vacancy-Rich Amorphous Rh Metallene Sulfide for Electrocatalytic Selective Synthesis of Aniline Coupled with Efficient Sulfion Degradation

The construction of efficient and stable electrocatalysts is of widespread research significance for electrocatalytic coupling reactions. Herein, an amorphous Rh metallene sulfide with sulfur-rich vacancies (a-RhS_2-x metallene) is synthesized for the cathodic nitrobenzene (Ph-NO₂) electroreduction reaction (ERR) to aniline (Ph-NH₂) coupled with the anodic sulfur ion (S^2-) oxidation reaction (SOR) in a coelectrolysis system. On the one hand, the amorphous Rh metallene structure can provide enough of a reactive site. On the other hand, the amorphization and the introduced S vacancies can generate rich defects and ligand unsaturated sites to improve the intrinsic activity of the active sites. Due to these advantages, the a-RhS_2-x metallene exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance for Ph-NO₂ ERR and SOR. Inspiringly, in the assembled electrocatalytic coupling system, the required overpotential is only 0.442 V at 10 mA cm^-2 to drive the cathodic Ph-NO₂ ERR and anodic SOR, which allows for promising energy-efficient electrolysis to generate high value-added chemicals.

Progress in Hydrogen Production Coupled with Electrochemical Oxidation of Small Molecules

The electrochemical oxidation of small molecules to generate value-added products has gained enormous interest in recent years because of the advantages of benign operation conditions, high conversion efficiency and selectivity, the absence of external oxidizing agents, and eco-friendliness. Coupling the electrochemical oxidation of small molecules to replace oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode in an electrolyzer would simultaneously realize the generation of high-value chemicals or pollutant degradation and the highly efficient production of hydrogen. This Minireview presents an introduction on small-molecule choice and design strategies of electrocatalysts as well as recent breakthroughs achieved in the highly efficient production of hydrogen. Finally, challenges and future orientations are highlighted.

Innovative Electrochemical Strategies for Hydrogen Production: From Electricity Input to Electricity Output

Renewable H₂ production by water electrolysis has attracted much attention due to its numerous advantages. However, the energy consumption of conventional water electrolysis is high and mainly driven by the kinetically inert anodic oxygen evolution reaction. An alternative approach is the coupling of different half-cell reactions and the use of redox mediators. In this review, we, therefore, summarize the latest findings on innovative electrochemical strategies for H₂ production. First, we address redox mediators utilized in water splitting, including soluble and insoluble species, and the corresponding cell concepts. Second, we discuss alternative anodic reactions involving organic and inorganic chemical transformations. Then, electrochemical H₂ production at both the cathode and anode, or even H₂ production together with electricity generation, is presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects for the future development of this research field are highlighted.

Recent advances in metallic transition metal dichalcogenides as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Layered metallic transition metal dichalcogenides (MTMDs) exhibit distinctive electrical and catalytic properties to drive basal plane activity, and, therefore, they have emerged as promising alternative electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). A key challenge for realizing MTMDs-based electrocatalysts is the controllable and scalable synthesis of high-quality MTMDs and the development of engineering strategies that allow tuning their electronic structures. However, the lack of a method for the direct synthesis of MTMDs retaining the structural stability limits optimizing the structural design for the next generation of robust electrocatalysts. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the synthesis of MTMDs comprising groups VB and VIB and various routes for structural engineering to enhance the HER catalytic performance. Furthermore, we provide insight into the potential future directions and the development of MTMDs with high durability as electrocatalysts to generate green hydrogen through water-splitting technology.

Green Electrosynthesis of 5,5'-Azotetrazolate Energetic Materials Plus Energy-Efficient Hydrogen Production Using Ruthenium Single-Atom Catalysts

Water electrolysis involves two parallel reactions, that is, oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution (HER), in which sluggish OER is a significant limiting step that results in high energy consumption. Coupling the thermodynamically favorable electrooxidation of organic alternatives to value-added fine chemicals HER is a promising approach for the simultaneous cost-effective production of value-added chemicals and hydrogen. Here, a new coupling system for the green electrochemical synthesis of organic energetic materials (EMs) plus hydrogen production using single-atom catalysts is introduced. The catalysts are prepared by the facile galvanostatic deposition of ruthenium single atoms on the molybdenum selenide and reveal a low HER overpotential of 38.9 mV at -10 mA cm^-2 in an alkaline medium. Importantly, the cell voltage of water electrolysis can be significantly reduced to only 1.35 V at a current of 10 mA cm^-2 by coupling water splitting with the electrooxidation of 5-amino-1H-tetrazole to synthesize 5,5'-azotetrazolate energetic material. These materials are traditionally synthesized under harsh conditions involving a strong oxidizing agent, high-temperature conditions, and difficult separation of by-products. This study provides a green and efficient method of synthesizing organic EMs while simultaneously producing hydrogen.

Enzyme-Inspired Microenvironment Engineering of a Single-Molecular Heterojunction for Promoting Concerted Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Challenges remain in the development of novel multifunctional electrocatalysts and their industrial operation on low-electricity pair-electrocatalysis platforms for the carbon cycle. Herein, an enzyme-inspired single-molecular heterojunction electrocatalyst ((NH_x )₁₆ -NiPc/CNTs) with specific atomic nickel centers and amino-rich local microenvironments for industrial-level electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (eCO₂ RR) and further energy-saving integrated CO₂ electrolysis is designed and developed. (NH_x )₁₆ -NiPc/CNTs exhibit unprecedented catalytic performance with industry-compatible current densities, ≈100% Faradaic efficiency and remarkable stability for CO₂ -to-CO conversion, outperforming most reported catalysts. In addition to the enhanced CO₂ capture by chemisorption, the sturdy deuterium kinetic isotope effect and proton inventory studies sufficiently reveal that such distinctive local microenvironments provide an effective proton ferry effect for improving local alkalinity and proton transfer and creating local interactions to stabilize the intermediate, ultimately enabling the high-efficiency operation of eCO₂ RR. Further, by using (NH_x )₁₆ -NiPc/CNTs as a bifunctional electrocatalyst in a flow cell, a low-electricity overall CO₂ electrolysis system coupling cathodic eCO₂ RR with anodic oxidation reaction is developed to achieve concurrent feed gas production and sulfur recovery, simultaneously decreasing the energy input. This work paves the new way in exploring molecular electrocatalysts and electrolysis systems with techno-economic feasibility.

Energy-Saving Hydrogen Production by Seawater Electrolysis Coupling Sulfion Degradation

Electrolysis of costless and infinite seawater is a promising way toward grid-scale hydrogen production without causing freshwater stress. Practical potential of this technology, however, is hindered by low energy efficiency and anode corrosion by the detrimental chlorine chemistry in seawater in addition to unaffordable electricity expense. Herein, energy-saving hydrogen production is reported by chlorine-free seawater splitting coupling sulfion oxidation. It yields hydrogen at a low cell voltage of 0.97 V, cutting the electricity consumption to 2.32 kWh per m³ H₂ at 300 mA cm^-2 . Compared to alkaline water electrolysis, the energy expense is primarily saved by 60% with 50% lower energy equivalent input. Benefiting from the ultralow cell voltage, the hazardous chlorine chemistry is fully avoided without anode corrosion regardless of Cl^- crossover. Meanwhile, it also allows fast degradation of S^2- pollutant from the water body to value-added sulfur with 80% efficiency, for further reducing hydrogen cost and protection of the ecosystem. Connecting such a hybrid seawater electrolyzer to a commercial solar cell can harvest the hydrogen from seawater with better sustainability. This work may offer new opportunities for low-cost hydrogen production from the unlimited ocean resources with environmental protection.

Epitaxial Growth of High-Energy Copper Facets for Promoting Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Copper is known as a conductive metal but an inert catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction due to its inappropriate electronic structure. In this work, an active copper catalyst is prepared with high-energy surfaces by adopting the friction stir welding (FSW) technique. FSW can mix the immiscible Fe and Cu materials homogenously and heat them to a high temperature. Resultantly, α-Fe transforms into γ-Fe, and low-energy γ-Fe (100) and (110) surfaces induce the epitaxial growth of high-energy Cu (110) and (100) planes, respectively. After the removal of γ-Fe by acid etching, the copper electrode exposes high-energy surface and exhibits excellent acidic HER activity, even being superior to Pt foil at high current densities (>66 mA cm^-2 ). Density functional theory calculation reveals that the high-energy surface favors the adsorption of hydrogen intermediate, thus accelerating the hydrogen evolution reaction. The epitaxial growth induced by FSW opens a new avenue toward engineering high-performance catalysts. In addition, FSW makes it possible to massively fabricate low-cost catalyst, which is advantageous to industrial application.
