Abstract
While the benefits of physical activity on mental health are well-known, systematic reviews and meta-analyses on its impact on mental illness in adults with COVID-19 are scarce. This study of 25 randomized controlled trials shows that physical activity significantly reduces anxiety (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.915; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.182 to -0.648; I2 = 82.0%; p < 0.001) and depression (SMD = -0.752; 95% CI = -1.034 to -0.470; I2 = 81.4%; p < 0.001). Traditional Chinese ethnic sports are notably effective. Interventions under 3 weeks best reduce depression, while 3 ≤ 7 weeks optimally reduce anxiety. Sessions ≤5 times weekly, with 30 ≤ 60 min for anxiety and >60 min for depression, yield the best outcomes. These results highlight the specific effectiveness of physical activity in alleviating anxiety and depression in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Objective To assess the effect of Chinese medicine affective therapy on psychotherapy for mild to moderate depression in hemodialysis patients, and to provide a reference basis for clinical practice. Methods Clinical data (January 2021-January 2023) from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into control (routine care) and observation (routine care + Chinese medicine affective therapy) groups. The data of anxiety self-assessment scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), general well-being scale (GWB) and Health Questionnaire (SF-36) were compared between the two groups. Results PSM matched 80 patients each in observation and control groups, showing no significant baseline differences. Pre-care scores (SAS, SDS, PSQI, GWB, SF-36) had no notable discrepancies (P > .05). Post-care, SAS, SDS, PSQI were lower in the observation group (P < .05), while GWB and SF-36 scores were higher (P < .001). The SAS, SDS, and PSQI scores were lower in the observation group relative to the control group after care (All P-values were < .05), whereas the GWB and SF-36 score scores of the observation group were higher than those of the control group (All P-values were < .05). Conclusion Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) affective therapy may be able to improve the quality of sleep, quality of life, and general well-being of hemodialysis patients with mild-to-moderate depression, as well as alleviate the patients' adverse emotions.

Abstract
A randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted from 2022 to 2023 at a hospital specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai. A total of 564 participants were allocated into control and intervention groups in order to determine the effectiveness of Shujing Tongdu massage on patients with chronic lesions or spinal disorders. No significant differences were observed in baseline characteristics between the groups; age, gender and condition type were all distributed in a comparable manner. Following the implementation of Shujing Tongdu massage therapy twice weekly for the duration of 12 weeks, intervention group exhibited noteworthy enhancements. Significantly, rate of lesion healing achieved in the intervention group increased by 30%, while it merely improved by 10% in the control group. The intervention group exhibited decrease in pain intensity from 6.5 to 4.2, whereas control group demonstrated comparatively smaller reduction from 6.7 to 6.0. Range of motion in the intervention group increased substantially from 45 to 60 degrees, whereas it increased from 44 to 46 degrees in the control group. In the intervention group, Quality of Life scores increased from 50 to 75, exceeding the increase of 58 in the control group. There was significant rise in the Mental Well-being Index for intervention group, from 60 to 80, in contrast to rise of 64 from 62 in the control group. Statistically significant outcomes were determined, establishing the massage therapy's efficacy. Mild discomfort and muscle soreness were the most frequent adverse effects in the intervention group, whereas vertigo was more prevalent in the control group. Based on the findings of this research, Shujing Tongdu massage therapy effectively promoted wound healing and mitigated symptoms associated with spinal disorders, indicating its potential as the supplementary therapeutic modality in clinical environments.

Abstract
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) plays a role in preventing and treating COVID-19 in China. Based on the manifestations and symptoms of COVID-19, our study used the data mining method to summarize related therapeutic experience left by predecessors who used TCM to treat epidemics in their eras. Initially, we collected abundant medical records with similar manifestations of COVID-19 in Chinese ancient times. The key words including wen (), yi (), li (), and zhang () were searched in ZhongyiZhiku (https://www.zk120.com/) from Warring States Period (475 BC-221 BC) to the Republic of China era (1912-1949) to locate ancient medical records according to inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Moreover, COVID-19-related manifestations and corresponding medications in those records were categorized. Eventually, Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System version 2.5 was used to build a medical record database of TCM treating COVID-19. Our study collected 263 epidemic medical records comprising COVID-19 related manifestations and found that Chinese Materia Medica (CMM) combinations excavated from ancient medical records included Ren Shen Bai Du San, Wu Ling San, Xiao Chai Hu Tang, Da Cheng Qi Tang, Da Chai Hu Tang, Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang, and Qing Wen Bai Du Yin. The recurrent CMMs with a high frequency for treating COVID-19 manifestations were Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Paeoniae Alba Radix (Bai Shao), Poria (Fu Ling), and Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu). Our study suggests that TCM might offer new therapeutic strategies for COVID-19.

Abstract
Depression and breast cancer (BC) have been found to have a shared genetic basis, multiple loci of effect, and a presumed causal relationship. The treatment of BC combined with depression poses significant challenges. This study aims to use bioinformatics and network pharmacology to explore the molecular basis of BC combined with depression and to elucidate the potential mechanisms of Xiaoyaosan (XYS) in treating this disease. The molecular background of BC complicated with depression was discovered via data mining and bioinformatics. The molecular mechanism of XYS in the treatment of BC with depression was investigated by network pharmacology. The binding affinity between targets and active compounds was evaluated by molecular docking. The impact of XYS on the gene and protein expression of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) in microglial cells was assessed using RT-quantitative PCR and western blot analysis, respectively. Differential expression analysis was conducted to identify genes associated with BC, revealing that 2958 genes were involved, with 277 of these genes also being related to depression. XYS was found to contain 173 active compounds and 342 targets, with 44 of these targets being involved in regulating the progression of BC and depression. Enrichment analysis was performed to identify pathways associated with these targets, revealing that they were related to cell proliferation, catalytic activity, cell communication, and interleukin-18 signaling and LXR/RXR activation. Network analysis was conducted to identify key targets of Xiaoyaosan in treating BC combined with depression, with EGF, interleukin 6, epidermal growth factor receptor, and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma being identified as important targets. Molecular docking was also performed to assess the binding affinity between key targets and active compounds, with puerarin showing the strongest affinity for MMP9. In microglial cells, XYS significantly enhances the gene and protein expression of MMP9. This study elucidated the pharmacological mechanism of co-treatment for BC patients complicated with depression and the pharmacological mechanism of XYS against BC plus depression.

Abstract
Background Infections of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) and the subsequent quarantine can culminate in anxious mood and sleep disturbances. The objective of this clinical trial was to investigate the effect of traditional Qigong with music therapy on relieving anxiety and improving the quality of sleep in Chinese adults with COVID-19 infection. Methods A total of 200 asymptomatic COVID-19 infected patients were randomly assigned into two groups during their quarantine period in Chongming Island, Shanghai. The patients in the treatment group daily received Baduanjin Qigong, five-elements music therapy and routine care, while the patients in the control group only took the routine care. The primary outcome was anxiety levels measured by the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7). Secondary outcomes included the quality of sleep measured by the Jenkins Sleep Scale (JSS), the degree of depression measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), as well as the self-efficacy in the Perceived Health Competence Scale (PHCS). An online questionnaire was given to all participants on the day of arrival to determine the baseline for all outcomes and then given again on the day of discharge. A one-way analysis of covariance was used to analyze the differences between the two groups after intervention. Results At the end of the intervention, 177 (88.5%) patients finished the questionnaire. Patients in the treatment group had clearly decreased GAD-7 scores (MD = 2.7, 95% CI = 2.3, 3.2) after the daily exercise and music. Patients in the control group had little changes in the GAD-7 (MD = -0.2, 95%CI = -0.7, 0.3, P = 0.07), as well as the PHQ-9 (MD = 0.1, 95%CI = -0.5, 0.6, P = 0.66) after the routine care, when compared to their baseline scores. There were statistical between-group differences in GAD-7 (MD = 2.9, 95% CI = 2.2, 3.6, P < 0.001)and in the PHQ-9 scores (MD = 3.6, 95% CI = 2.9, 4.4, P < 0.001) at the post-treatment. Compared with the control group, patients had significantly lower scores on the JSS (MD = 2.7, 95% CI = 2.0, 3.3, P < 0.001), and higher scores on the PHCS (MD = -5.0, 95% CI = -6.1, -3.9, P < 0.001) after receiving Qigong and the music therapy. Conclusion Traditional Baduanjin Qigong and five-elements music therapy help to relieve anxiety and depression, and improve the sleep quality in patients with COVID-19 infection. Abstract
Late-life depression (LLD) is one of the most common mental disorders among the older adults. Population aging, social stress, and the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly affected the emotional health of older adults, resulting in a worldwide prevalence of LLD. The clinical phenotypes between LLD and adult depression differ in terms of symptoms, comorbid physical diseases, and coexisting cognitive impairments. Many pathological factors such as the imbalance of neurotransmitters, a decrease in neurotrophic factors, an increase in β-amyloid production, dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and changes in the gut microbiota, are allegedly associated with the onset of LLD. However, the exact pathogenic mechanism underlying LLD remains unclear. Traditional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor therapy results in poor responsiveness and side effects during LLD treatment. Neuromodulation therapies and complementary and integrative therapies have been proven safe and effective for the treatment of LLD. Importantly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, modern digital health intervention technologies, including socially assistive robots and app-based interventions, have proven to be advantageous in providing personal services to patients with LLD.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) to manage stress during the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to community-dwelling adults between the ages of 46 and 75 years, and a total of 351 participants completed the questionnaire. Log-binominal regression analyses were fitted to explore the factors associated with the use of CAMs. Results: The mean age of the participants was 57.0 years, and 67.0% reported that they had used CAMs within the past three months. Middle-aged adults were more likely to use CAMs than late middle-aged adults and older adults (p < 0.001). Overall, the major CAMs utilized to relieve psychological stress were music therapies (37.6%), massage (31.1%), spinal manipulation (25.1%), relaxing therapies (24.2%), and reading scriptures or The Bible (23.9%). Religion and vegetarian diets were the most important factors influencing participants to use CAMs, especially music therapies, massage, and reading scriptures/The Bible. Conclusions: CAM use was very prevalent among middle-aged adults in Taiwan; in particular, music therapies were the most favored activities for reducing stress. Population-specific mental health interventions using music can be developed to improve stress management outcomes during public health emergencies.

Abstract
Lianhua Qingwen combined with Western medicine (LHQW+WM) has been proposed as a viable treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Interestingly, umbrella reviews of systematic reviews (SRs), which provide the most comprehensive evidence, are the best evidence in evidence-based medicine. Therefore, an umbrella review of SRs that summarizes and evaluates the efficacy of LHQW+WM for COVID-19 is urgently required. Methods Overall, 6 databases were used to conduct a comprehensive literature search from inception to January 22, 2022. The corrected covered area (CCA) was used to analyze the overlapping between SRs. Meta-analysis was conducted when that of the included SRs was inappropriate. A MeaSurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR-2) was also employed to assess the quality of the included SRs. Results In total, 12 SRs were identified, which included 12 unique primary studies. The included SRs ranged in quality from moderate to critically low and had an extremely high CCA (36.4%). Compared to conventional treatment, LHQW+WM showed efficacy concerning fatigue recovery [risk ratio (RR) = 1.69, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-2.73, n = 2, I2 = 0%], cough recovery (RR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.09-2.51, n = 3, I2 = 39.1%), and overall effective rates (RR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07-1.28, n = 3, I2 = 17.5%). Conclusion LHQW+WM may improve the clinical symptoms of patients with COVID-19; however, the results should be interpreted cautiously because of the rigorous processes in the included SRs.
