Abstract
SCOPE Substituting plant protein for animal protein has emerged as a promising strategy for managing atherogenic lipids. However, the impact of long-term intake of a high plant protein diet (HPD) on hepatic lipid disorder remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS Eight-week-old apolipoprotein E deficient (apoE-/- ) mice are fed with either a normal protein diet (NCD) or HPD for 12 weeks. HPD intervention results in decreased body weight accompanied by increased energy expenditure, with no significant effect on glycemic control. Long-term intake of HPD improves the serum and hepatic lipid and cholesterol accumulation by suppressing hepatic squalene epoxidase (SQLE) expression, a key enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Integrated analysis of 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolomics profiling reveals that HPD intervention increases the abundance of the Lachnospiraece family and serum levels of 12,13-DiHOME. Furthermore, in vivo studies demonstrate that 12,13-DiHOME significantly inhibits lipid accumulation, as well as SQLE expression induced by oleic acid in HepG2 cells. CONCLUSION Diet rich in plant protein diet alleviates hyperlipidemia via increased microbial production of 12,13-DiHOME.

Abstract
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the most important and the number one cause of mortality in both developing and industrialized nations. The co-morbidities associated with CVD are observed from infancy to old age. Apolipoprotein B100 (Apo B) is the primary apolipoprotein and structural protein of all major atherogenic particles derived from the liver including Very-Low- Density Lipoproteins (VLDL), Intermediate-density Lipoprotein (IDL), and Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL) particles. It has been suggested that measurement of the Apo B concentration is a superior and more reliable index for the prediction of CVD risk than is the measurement of LDL-C. Nutraceuticals and medicinal plants have attracted significant attention as it pertains to the treatment of non-communicable diseases, particularly CVD, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The effect of nutraceuticals and herbal products on CVD, as well as some of its risk factors such as dyslipidemia, have been investigated previously. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of these natural products, including herbal supplements and functional foods (e.g. fruits and vegetables as either dry materials, or their extracts) on Apo B has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the primary objective of this paper was to review the effect of bioactive natural compounds on plasma Apo B concentrations. It is concluded that, in general, medicinal plants and nutraceuticals can be used as complementary medicine to reduce plasma Apo B levels in a safe, accessible, and inexpensive manner in an attempt to prevent and treat CVD.

Abstract
Proteins play a crucial role in metabolism, in maintaining fluid and acid-base balance and antibody synthesis. Dietary proteins are important nutrients and are classified into: 1) animal proteins (meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy), and, 2) plant proteins (legumes, nuts and soy). Dietary modification is one of the most important lifestyle changes that has been shown to significantly decrease the risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) by attenuating related risk factors. The CVD burden is reduced by optimum diet through replacement of unprocessed meat with low saturated fat, animal proteins and plant proteins. In view of the available evidence, it has become acceptable to emphasize the role of optimum nutrition to maintain arterial and CV health. Such healthy diets are thought to increase satiety, facilitate weight loss, and improve CV risk. Different studies have compared the benefits of omnivorous and vegetarian diets. Animal protein related risk has been suggested to be greater with red or processed meat over and above poultry, fish and nuts, which carry a lower risk for CVD. In contrast, others have shown no association of red meat intake with CVD. The aim of this expert opinion recommendation was to elucidate the different impact of animal vs vegetable protein on modifying cardiometabolic risk factors. Many observational and interventional studies confirmed that increasing protein intake, especially plant-based proteins and certain animal-based proteins (poultry, fish, unprocessed red meat low in saturated fats and low-fat dairy products) have a positive effect in modifying cardiometabolic risk factors. Red meat intake correlates with increased CVD risk, mainly because of its non-protein ingredients (saturated fats). However, the way red meat is cooked and preserved matters. Thus, it is recommended to substitute red meat with poultry or fish in order to lower CVD risk. Specific amino acids have favourable results in modifying major risk factors for CVD, such as hypertension. Apart from meat, other animal-source proteins, like those found in dairy products (especially whey protein) are inversely correlated to hypertension, obesity and insulin resistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted a meta-analysis on the effect of plant protein or animal protein on body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI) and blood lipid profiles in patients with hypercholesterolemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used subject and free words to search PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. The risk-of-bias evaluation tool was used to assess literature quality. Data merging and statistical analyses were carried out using Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 13.0. All indicators were expressed as the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The heterogeneity test was conducted according to I2 and Q tests. We used Egger's test to evaluate publication bias quantitatively. RESULTS This was a meta-analysis of intervention trials. Thirty-two studies (1562 patients) were included. The quality of the included studies was acceptable. Compared with consumption of animal protein, plant protein reduced total cholesterol (TC) (MD = - 0.19 mmol/L, 95% CI - 0.26, - 0.12), triglyceride (MD = - 0.07 mmol/L, 95% CI - 0.13, - 0.02), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (MD = - 0.19 mmol/L, 95% CI - 0.26, - 0.13), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD = - 0.05 mmol/L, 95% CI - 0.09, - 0.01), TC/LDL-C ratio (MD = - 0.17, 95% CI - 0.32, - 0.02) and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (MD = - 0.20, 95% CI - 0.33, - 0.06) significantly and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (MD = 0.03 mmol/L, 95% CI 0.01, 0.06) levels, but had no effect on BW (MD = - 0.41 kg, 95% CI - 2.14, 1.33) or BMI (MD = 0.11 kg/m2, 95% CI - 0.51, 0.73). CONCLUSION Compared with animal protein, consumption of plant protein could improve lipid profile in patients with hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic and vascular abnormalities that include central obesity, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hypercoagulability and an increased risk of coronary and cerebral vascular disease. These metabolic and vascular abnormalities are the main cause of cardiovascular mortality in western societies. Endothelial dysfunction, an early step in the development of atherosclerosis, has been reported in obese nondiabetic individuals and in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It has also been observed in individuals at high risk for Type 2 diabetes, including those with impaired glucose tolerance and the normoglycemic first-degree relatives of Type 2 diabetic patients. Recent evidence points to adipocytes as a complex and active endocrine tissue whose secretory products, including free fatty acids and several cytokines (i.e., leptin, adiponectin, tissue necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and resistin) play a major role in the regulation of human metabolic and vascular biology. These adipocytokines have been claimed to be the missing link between insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. Interventions designed to improve endothelial and/or adipose-tissue functions may reduce cardiovascular events in obese individuals with either the metabolic syndrome or Type 2 diabetes. Lifestyle modification in the form of caloric restriction and increased physical activity are the most common modalities used for treating those individuals at risk and is unanimously agreed to be the initial step in managing Type 2 diabetes. Several recent studies have demonstrated favorable impacts of lifestyle modifications in improving endothelial function and insulin sensitivity, in addition to altering serum levels of adipocytokines and possibly reducing cardiovascular events. This review discusses current knowledge of the role of lifestyle modifications in ameliorating cardiovascular risk in obese subjects with either the metabolic syndrome or Type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The role of food matrix and gender on soy isoflavone metabolism and biomarkers of activity were examined in twenty free-living adults (34.7 ± 11.5 years old) with hypercholesterolemia (221.9 ± 18.7mg dL(-1)). In a randomized crossover design study, participants consumed soy bread (3 wk) or a soy beverage (3 wk) containing 20 g soy protein with 99 and 93 mg isoflavones aglycone equivalents per day, respectively. During soy bread intervention, women had significantly greater microbial metabolite excretion (P = 0.05) of isoflavonoids than men. In men, isoflavone metabolite excretion was not discernibly different between the two matrices. Significant reductions (P≤ 0.05) in triglycerides (24.8%), LDL cholesterol (6.0%), apolipoprotein A-I (12.3%), and lipid oxidative stress capacity (25.5%), were observed after soy food intervention. Our findings suggest that the food matrix significantly impacts soy isoflavone metabolism, particularly microbial metabolites in women.

Abstract
Following the high-profile studies on hormone replacement therapy which provided little evidence in support of the drug therapy improving future health, there remains a growing demand for dietary solutions for maintaining health and preventing disease as women age. Although interest in the relative importance of phyto-oestrogens to human health has increased dramatically over the last decade, the effective dose for health benefits and hypothetical issues on safety remain to be resolved. Plausible mechanisms and epidemiological data are available to support the concept that phyto-oestrogen-rich diets exert physiological effects, but optimal doses and sources of these compounds have still not been elucidated for specific health benefits. In addition, much of the current mechanistic data are difficult to interpret as the experiments have incorporated levels of phyto-oestrogens that may not be achievable in vivo and have to date only used aglycones and glycosides of the pure compounds rather than examining the biological effects of gut and liver metabolites. The present review will concentrate on the isoflavone subclass of phyto-oestrogens, as, to date, these compounds have received most attention from both a commercial and research perspective.

Abstract
Results in animals suggest favourable coronary vasomotor actions of isoflavones; however, the effects of isoflavones on the human coronary circulation have not been determined. In the present study, we therefore investigated the effects of short-term isoflavone-intact soya protein ingestion on basal coronary arterial tone and stimulated vasoreactivity and blood flow in patients with CHD (coronary heart disease) or risk factors for CHD. Seventy-one subjects were randomized, double-blind, to isoflavone-intact soya protein [active; n=33, aged 58+/-8 years (mean+/-S.D.)] or isoflavone-free placebo (n=38, aged 61+/-8 years) for 5 days prior to coronary angiography. In 25 of these subjects, stimulated coronary blood flow was calculated from flow velocity, measured using intracoronary Doppler and coronary luminal diameter before and after intracoronary adenosine, ACh (acetylcholine) and ISDN (isosorbide dinitrate) infusions. Basal and stimulated coronary artery luminal diameters were measured using quantitative coronary angiography. Serum concentrations of the isoflavones genistein, daidzein and equol were increased by active treatment (P<0.001, P<0.001 and P=0.03 respectively). Basal mean luminal diameter was not significantly different between groups (active compared with placebo: 2.9+/-0.7 compared with 2.73+/-0.44 mm, P=0.31). There was no difference in luminal diameter, flow velocity and volume flow responses to adenosine, ACh or ISDN between groups. Active supplement had no effect on basal coronary artery tone or stimulated coronary vasoreactivity or blood flow compared with placebo. Our results suggest that short-term consumption of isoflavone-intact soya protein is neither harmful nor beneficial to the coronary circulation of humans with CHD or risk factors for CHD. These results are consistent with recent cautions placed on the purported health benefits of plant sterols.

Abstract
Many clinical studies have shown high-dose supplemental soy protein has beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk factors. We examined the association between habitual soyfood intake and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plasma lipids in a cross-sectional study including 406 (M 134, F 272) middle-aged Chinese adults (40-65 years) without confirmed relevant diseases. We found significantly dose-respondent decreases in bifurcation IMT, total and LDL cholesterol associated with increased usual soyfood intake after adjusting for potential confounders (p for trend, all p<0.05). Covariate-adjusted mean bifurcation IMT, total and LDL cholesterol decreased by 9.4%, 6.2% and 10.4% in women (p=0.020, 0.035, 0.110), 16.0%, 12.3% and 19.6% in men (p=0.036, 0.005, 0.002), and 9.9%, 9.3% and 15.4% in total men and women combined (p=0.010, <0.001, <0.001) when the mean intake of soy protein increased from 0.87 (F) or 0.64 (M) g/day (1st tertile) to 8.35 (F) or 7.48 (M) g/day (3rd tertile), respectively. Significant interaction between sex and soy consumption on bifurcation IMT was observed (p=0.008). In conclusion, higher habitual soyfood consumption is associated with decreased bifurcation IMT, plasma TC and LDL-c in middle-aged Chinese adults. The association is more apparent in men than in women.

Abstract
In recent years, isoflavones have increased in popularity as an alternative to estrogen therapy, particularly after the Women's Health Initiative demonstrated an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, and heart attacks in response to estrogen and progesterone intervention. Isoflavones are heterocyclic phenols with structural similarity to estradiol-17beta and selective estrogen receptor modulators. Actions at the cellular level depend on the target tissue, receptor status of the tissue, and the level of endogenous estrogen. Clinical studies of soy-based diets evaluating the relation between soy consumption and serum lipid concentrations revealed that soy consumption significantly decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Epidemiological studies suggest a protective effect of soy protein on breast tissue as evidenced by the lower rates of breast cancer in East Asian countries where soy is a predominant part of the diet. Soy products also alleviate menopausal symptoms by reducing hot flashes. However, whether these biological effects of soy products originated from isoflavones is not clear. Furthermore, data available from human studies on the effect of isoflavones on osteoporosis are limited, and additional studies are needed to support a role in osteoporosis prevention. To date, no adverse effects of short- or long-term use of soy proteins are known in humans, and the only adverse effects known are those reported in animals. In conclusion, isoflavones are biologically active compounds, and current data are insufficient to draw definitive conclusions regarding the use of isoflavones as an alternative to estrogen for hormone replacement in postmenopausal women. Large, long-term intervention studies examining adverse effects and disease outcomes are needed before definitive conclusion can be drawn.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiologic studies have suggested that a high phytoestrogen intake is inversely associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors and the incidence of cardiovascular events. However, the relation between the intake of isoflavone, a major component of phytoestrogen, and vascular endothelial function and the atherosclerotic burden remains unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the effects of various dietary soy isoflavone intakes on brachial artery flow-mediated dilation and mean maximum carotid intima-media thickness. DESIGN We studied 126 consecutive patients (x +/- SD age: 66.5 +/- 11.1 y; 69% male) at high risk of cardiovascular events (94% had documented coronary artery disease or stroke; 44% had diabetes). A validated food-frequency questionnaire was used to estimate their dietary intake after they achieved stable dietary patterns for 3 mo. RESULTS The median intakes of isoflavone and soy protein were 5.5 (range: 2.2-13.3) mg/d and 1.2 (range: 0.4-2.8) g/d, respectively. Persons in the 4th quartile of daily isoflavone intake had significantly (P < 0.05) greater flow-mediated dilation-but not mean maximum carotid intima-media thickness-than did those in the lower quartiles. After adjustment for potential confounders, a higher isoflavone intake in the 4th than in the 1st quartile (>13.3 mg/d), but not a higher intake of soy protein, predicted an absolute 2.71% increase in flow-mediated dilation (relative increase: 103%; P = 0.02) and a 0.17-mm decrease in mean maximum carotid intima-media thickness (relative decrease: 14.5%; P = 0.04). CONCLUSION In persons at high risk of cardiovascular events, a greater isoflavone intake is associated with better vascular endothelial function and lower carotid atherosclerotic burden.

Abstract
Soy isoflavones may impede atherogenic processes associated with cardiovascular disease. Research suggests that the postprandial generation of TG-rich remnants contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. The purpose of the current study was to determine if 39 g soy (85 mg aglycone isoflavones, treatment) compared with 40 g milk protein (0 mg aglycone isoflavones, control) in combination with a high-fat meal can modify postprandial, atherogenic-associated events and biomarkers for oxidative stress, inflammation, and thrombosis. Fifteen healthy men (20-47 yr) participated in a double-blind cross-over meal-challenge study occurring on two nonconsecutive days. The study meals consisted of two high-fat apple muffins consumed with either a soy or milk shake (229 mL, 41% fat, 41% carbohydrate, and 18% protein). Blood samples were obtained at baseline (fasted) and hours two, four, and six postprandial. Plasma TG significantly increased in both treatment and control meal challenges compared with baseline. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) between treatment (soy) and control (milk) for ex vivo copper-induced LDL oxidation, serum C-reactive protein, serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), serum fibrinogen, or plasma lipids (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TG). IL-6-concentrations significantly decreased as a function of time during either meal challenge (P = 0.005). These data suggest that consumption of soy or milk protein in conjunction with a high-fat meal does not acutely modify postprandial oxidative stress, inflammation, or plasma lipid concentrations in young, healthy men.

Abstract
Consumption of soy protein is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in man, and reduced atherosclerosis in a variety of experimental animals. Although a portion of the cardiovascular protective effects appears to be due to reductions in plasma lipoprotein concentration, in most people the magnitude of this effect is relatively small. In many, but not all studies using animal models, the reduction in atherosclerosis is in part independent of changes in plasma lipids and lipoproteins. This implies that there may be a direct effect on the arterial wall of one or more of the components in soyprotein that reduces susceptibility to atherosclerosis. The most actively studied components of soy protein that may be responsible for these anti-atherogenic effects are the isoflavones and various protein factions. Extraction of isoflavones and other alcohol-soluble components from soy protein lowers, but does not eliminate its ability to reduce atherosclerosis. Surprisingly, in most studies, adding back the isoflavone-rich alcohol extract to the previously extracted soy protein, or to another protein, does not restore its lipoprotein lowering or anti-atherogenic properties. This implies that alcohol extraction either destroys an active component of soy, alters the structural integrity of the soy proteins, or disassociates a required isoflavone-soy protein complex. Understanding the mechanism of this effect is an important goal for future research. Likewise, the sites of action on the arterial wall, and the mechanisms by which various soy components act to reduce atherosclerosis are just now being studied. The recent demonstration that expression of estrogen receptor alpha is required for atheroprotection by soy protein provides important new mechanistic insight. Other properties of soy, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and potentially antithrombogenic properties need to be explored more mechanistically before the full potential of dietary soy protein for the protection from cardiovascular disease will be known.

Abstract
AIMS The ability to assess endothelial function non-invasively with B-mode ultrasound has lead to its widespread application in a variety of studies. However, the absolute values obtained using this approach vary considerably across studies. We studied whether technical aspects of the methodology can explain the wide variety in absolute values across studies. METHODS AND RESULTS A literature search was performed to identify published reports on flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery published between 1992 and 2001. Information on type of equipment (wall track/B-mode), location of the measurement (antecubital fossa/upper arm), occlusion site (lower/upper arm), occlusion duration (min), and occlusion pressure was extracted. Patient characteristics were also extracted. For the healthy populations, mean FMD varied from 0.20 to 19.2%; for the coronary heart disease (CHD) patients FMD varied from -1.3 to 14%; for subjects with diabetes mellitus FMD varied from 0.75 to 12%. Compared with occlusion at the upper arm, lower arm occlusion was related to decreased FMD (mean difference in FMD -2.47%; 95% CI 0.55-4.39). An occlusion duration of > or =4.5 min was related to an increased FMD compared with an occlusion time of < or =4 min (mean difference 1.30%; 95% CI 0.35-2.46). These findings were adjusted for other technical aspects of the methodology and for differences in risk factors between populations. CONCLUSION Mean FMD differs widely between studies. There is a great overlap between populations (healthy, CHD, diabetics). Our findings suggest that the technical aspects of the measurements, the location, and the duration of the occlusion may explain some of these differences, whereas type of equipment, location of the measurement, and occlusion pressure do not.

Abstract
Data suggest that soy protein, a source of isoflavones, may have favorable effects on cardiovascular risk factors. Women (n = 205), ages 49-65 y, were randomized into this double blind, placebo-controlled trial of 43.5 mg red clover-derived isoflavones/d. A total of 177 women completed the trial. There were no differences between treatments for changes from baseline to 12 mo in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, fibrinogen, and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) (P >/= 0.1). Interactions between treatment and menopausal status were significant for changes in triglycerides and PAI-1 (P = 0.02 and P = 0.01), and changes were significant among perimenopausal women. In the isoflavone and placebo groups, changes in triglycerides were -0.2 +/- 0.6 and 0.4 +/- 0.6 mmol/L, P = 0.02, and changes in PAI-1 were -3.06 +/- 5.88 and 4.95 +/- 6.25 IU/L, P = 0.004, respectively. Interactions between apolipoprotein E (apoE) genotype and treatment tended to be significant for changes in total and LDL cholesterol (P = 0.06 and P = 0.05), and differences between treatments were significant in E2/E3 women. In the isoflavone and placebo groups, changes in total cholesterol were -0.61 +/- 0.79 and 0.18 +/- 0.79 mmol/L, P = 0.03, and changes in LDL cholesterol were -0.84 +/- 0.79 and -0.04 +/- 0.69 mmol/L, P = 0.02, respectively. Although there were potentially beneficial changes in triglycerides and PAI-1 among perimenopausal women consuming isoflavones, this study suggests that isoflavones alone are not responsible for the well-documented effects of soy protein on blood lipids. A larger study is required to confirm the effect modification by apoE genotype.

Abstract
Soy food intake has been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease risk factors. Data directly linking soy food intake to clinical outcomes of cardiovascular disease, however, are sparse. We examined the relationship between soy food intake and incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) among participants in the Shanghai Women's Health Study, a population-based prospective cohort study of approximately 75000 Chinese women aged 40-70 y at the baseline survey that was conducted from 1997 to 2000. Included in this study were 64915 women without previously diagnosed CHD, stroke, cancer and diabetes at baseline. Information on usual intake of soy foods was obtained at baseline through an in-person interview using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Cohort members were followed biennially through in-person interviews. After a mean of 2.5 y (162277 person-years) of follow-up, 62 incident cases of CHD (43 nonfatal myocardial infarctions and 19 CHD deaths) were documented. There was a clear monotonic dose-response relationship between soy food intake and risk of total CHD (P for trend = 0.003) with an adjusted relative risk (RR) of 0.25 (95% CI, 0.10-0.63) observed for women in the highest vs. the lowest quartile of total soy protein intake. The inverse association was more pronounced for nonfatal myocardial infarction (RR = 0.14; 95% CI, 0.04-0.48 for the highest vs. the lowest quartile of intake; P for trend = 0.001). This study provides, for the first time, direct evidence that soy food consumption may reduce the risk of CHD in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Controversy exists about the ability of soy protein and isoflavones to modulate vascular reactivity and biochemical cardiovascular disease risk markers in healthy, normolipidemic postmenopausal women. OBJECTIVE The objective was to investigate whether the consumption of soy protein with isoflavones would result in improved vascular reactivity and decreased biochemical markers of endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, independent of enhanced lipid and antioxidant effects. DESIGN Healthy postmenopausal women (n = 28) were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, and they consumed 25 g of 3 protein products/d for 6 wk each, with intervening washout periods. The products were isolated soy protein with isoflavones, ethanol-washed isolated soy protein with trace isoflavones, and total milk protein, which supplied 107, 2, and 0 mg total isoflavone (aglycone) units/d, respectively. We studied vascular function by using brachial artery reactivity values, plasma concentrations of vasoactive factors, endothelial inflammatory markers, and plasma isoflavone concentrations. The resistance of whole plasma and isolated LDL to copper-mediated oxidation was measured by conjugated diene formation. RESULTS Postocclusion peak flow velocity of the brachial artery was significantly (P = 0.03) lower after treatment with isolated soy protein with isoflavones, which is consistent with a vasodilatory response, than after treatment with total milk protein. Plasma isoflavones and metabolites were significantly (P < 0.01) higher after treatment with isolated soy protein with isoflavones. There were no significant changes in biochemical cardiovascular disease risk markers or conjugated diene formation between the 3 dietary groups. CONCLUSION Daily consumption of soy protein with isoflavones can result in positive vascular effects that are independent of lipid and antioxidant effects in healthy postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Dietary soy may attenuate the development of arterial hypertension. In addition, some soy-containing foods exhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory properties. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that ACE inhibition contributes to the antihypertensive effect of dietary soy. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was recorded from conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) at least 24 h after the implantation of catheters. Cumulative dose-response curves to intravenous angiotensin I (AI) (5-100 ng x kg(-1) x min(-1)) and angiotensin II (AII) (1-20 ng x kg(-1) x min(-1)) were constructed for male, sham-operated female, and ovariectomized female (OVX) SHR that were maintained on either casein or soy diets. The soy diet was associated with a significant reduction in baseline MAP in the OVX SHR (approximately 20 mmHg, 1 mmHg = 133.322 Pa). AI and AII infusions caused graded increases in MAP in all groups. However, there was no significant attenuation of the pressor responses to AI in the soy-fed SHR. Conversely, we observed a significant rightward displacement of the AII dose-response curves in the soy-fed sham-operated and OVX SHR. We conclude that ACE inhibition does not account for the antihypertensive effect of dietary soy in mature SHR.
