Abstract
Although many breast cancer survivors adjust to cancer treatment and survivorship, a sizable subgroup of women do not do so, resulting in psychological distress. Over time, this psychological distress can contribute to immune dysfunction and accompanying worsened physical symptoms as women navigate survivorship. Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser's work and mentorship has been integral to our understanding of breast cancer survivors' immune risks, and how behavioral factors may enhance these risks. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Stress and Health Lab, under Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser's mentorship, my research focused on understanding how distress is associated with immune functioning and physical health in breast cancer survivors. In this paper, we highlight Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser's influence on our careers as a strong female research and mentor, the work completed under her mentorship, and how the field of psychoneuroimmunology can continue to expand her research to better understand how distress in the cancer context confers long-term health risks.

Abstract
PURPOSE The primary goal of this scoping review was to summarize the literature published after the 2018 National Cancer Institute think tank, "Measuring Aging and Identifying Aging Phenotypes in Cancer Survivors," on physical and cognitive functional outcomes among cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy. We focused on the influence of chemotherapy on aging-related outcomes (i.e., physical functional outcomes, cognitive functional outcomes, and frailty), given the known associations between chemotherapy and biologic mechanisms that affect aging-related physiologic processes. METHODS A search was conducted across electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, for manuscripts published between August 2018 and July 2023. Eligible studies: 1) included physical function, cognitive function, and/or frailty as outcomes; 2) included cancer survivors (as either the whole sample or a subgroup); 3) reported on physical or cognitive functional outcomes and/or frailty related to chemotherapy treatment (as either the whole sample or a subgroup); and 4) were observational in study design. RESULTS The search yielded 989 potentially relevant articles, of which 65 met the eligibility criteria. Of the 65 studies, 49 were longitudinal, and 16 were cross-sectional; 30 studies (46%) focused on breast cancer, 20 studies (31%) focused on the age group 60 + years, and 17 (26%) focused on childhood cancer survivors. With regards to outcomes, 82% of 23 studies reporting on physical function showed reduced physical function, 74% of 39 studies reporting on cognitive functional outcomes found reduced cognitive function, and 80% of 15 studies reporting on frailty found increasing frailty among cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy over time and/or compared to individuals not treated with chemotherapy. Fourteen studies (22%) evaluated biologic mechanisms and their relationship to aging-related outcomes. Inflammation was consistently associated with worsening physical and cognitive functional outcomes and epigenetic age increases. Further, DNA damage was consistently associated with worse aging-related outcomes. CONCLUSION Chemotherapy is associated with reduced physical function, reduced cognitive function, and an increase in frailty in cancer survivors; these associations were demonstrated in longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. Inflammation and epigenetic age acceleration are associated with worse physical and cognitive function; prospective observational studies with multiple time points are needed to confirm these findings. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS This scoping review highlights the need for interventions to prevent declines in physical and cognitive function in cancer survivors who have received chemotherapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify distinct trajectories of physical health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older women over the first two years following breast cancer diagnosis, and to examine characteristics associated with trajectory group membership. METHODS A secondary analysis of a longitudinal study of women diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer who completed surveys within eight months of diagnosis and six, twelve, and eighteen months later that focuses on a subset of women aged ≥ 65 years (N = 145).Physical HRQoL was assessed using the Physical Component Score (PCS) of the SF-36 Health Survey. Finite mixture modeling identified distinct PCS trajectories. Multivariable logistic regression identified variables predictive of low PCS group membership. RESULTS Two distinct patterns of PCS trajectories were identified. The majority (58%) of women had PCS above the age-based SF-36 population norms and improved slightly over time. However, 42% of women had low PCS that remained low over time. In multivariable analyses, older age, difficulty paying for basics, greater number of medical comorbidities, and higher body mass index were associated with low PCS group membership. Cancer treatment and psychosocial variables were not significantly associated. CONCLUSION A large subgroup of older women reported very low PCS that did not improve over time. Older age, obesity, multiple comorbidities, and lower socioeconomic status may be risk factors for poorer PCS in women with breast cancer. Incorporating routine comprehensive geriatric assessments that screen for these factors may help providers identify older women at risk for poorer physical HRQoL post breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The differentiation of specific, long-term health-related quality of life (HRQL) trajectories among esophageal cancer survivors remains unclear. The authors aimed to identify potentially distinctly different HRQL-trajectories and uncover the underlying factors of such trajectories in patients having undergone surgery (esophagectomy) for esophageal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS This nationwide, prospective, and longitudinal cohort study included 420 patients who underwent curative treatment for esophageal cancer, including esophageal cancer surgery, in Sweden from 2001to 2005. The main outcome was HRQL summary score trajectories, measured by the well-validated EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire at 6 months, 3, 5, 10, and 15 years after esophagectomy, and analyzed using growth mixture models. Potentially underlying factors for these trajectories (age, sex, education, proxy baseline HRQL, comorbidity, tumor histology, chemo(radio)therapy, pathological tumor stage, and postoperative complications) were analyzed using weighted logistic regression providing odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI. RESULTS Four distinct HRQL summary score trajectories were identified: Persistently good, improving, deteriorating, and persistently poor. The odds of belonging to a persistently poor trajectory were decreased by longer education (>12 years versus <9 years: OR 0.18, 95% CI: 0.05-0.66) and adenocarcinoma histology (adenocarcinoma versus squamous cell carcinoma: OR 0.37, 95% CI: 0.16-0.85), and increased by more advanced pathological tumor stage (III-IV versus 0-I: OR 2.82, 95% CI: 1.08-7.41) and postoperative complications (OR 2.94, 95% CI: 1.36-6.36). CONCLUSION Distinct trajectories with persistently poor or deteriorating HRQL were identified after curative treatment for esophageal cancer. Education, tumor histology, pathological tumor stage, and postoperative complications might influence HRQL trajectories. The results may contribute to a more tailored follow-up with timely and targeted interventions. Future research remains to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Little is known about how health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in breast cancer cases differed from that of controls during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used data from an ongoing, nationwide HRQoL survey of 4279 newly diagnosed breast cancer cases and 2911 controls to investigate how breast cancer patients fared during different phases of the pandemic compared to controls. Responders during 2020-2022 were categorized into three COVID-19-related phases: the social restrictions phase, the high infection rate phase, and the post-pandemic phase. Across phases, breast cancer cases had significantly worse scores in most HRQoL domains compared to controls. Apart from slightly more insomnia in the high infection rate phase for both cases and controls, and better social functioning for young cases in the post-COVID-19 phase, the case-control differences in HRQoL remained consistent across phases. When the phases were assessed as one period, young women and those living with children <18 years of age fared the worst among breast cancer cases, while single women fared the worst among controls. In contrast, controls living with children <18 years of age exhibited better HRQoL than controls without children. In summary, women with breast cancer did not appear to fare differently than controls in terms of HRQoL across COVID-19 phases. However, breast cancer cases with young children fared worse in their HRQoL than other breast cancer cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most case-control studies compare cancer survivors with general population controls without considering sexual orientation or gender identity. This case-control analysis compared health risk behaviors and health outcomes among sexual and gender minority cancer survivors to those of matched sexual and gender minority participants without cancer (controls). METHODS Using data from the 2014-2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a population-based sample of 4507 cancer survivors who self-identified as transgender, gay men, bisexual men, lesbian women, or bisexual women were 1:1 propensity score matched, using age at survey, race and ethnicity, marital status, education, access to health care, and US census region. Within each sexual and gender minority group, behaviors and outcomes were compared between survivors and participants without cancer, and survivors' odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals calculated. RESULTS Gay male survivors had higher odds of depression, poor mental health, limited usual activities, difficulty concentrating, and fair or poor health. Few differences were observed between bisexual male survivors and participants without cancer. Compared with controls, lesbian female survivors had greater odds of overweight-obese status, depression, poor physical health, and fair or poor health. Bisexual female survivors had the highest rates of current smoking, depression, poor mental health, and difficulty concentrating across all sexual and gender minority groups. Statistically significantly different from transgender controls, transgender survivors had greater odds of heavy alcohol use, physical inactivity, and fair or poor health. CONCLUSIONS This analysis revealed an urgent need to address the high prevalence of engaging in multiple health risk behaviors and not following guidelines to avoid second cancers, additional adverse outcomes, and cancer recurrences among sexual and gender minority cancer survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sexual health is an important aspect of quality of life. Knowledge concerning sexual health in long-term breast cancer survivors (BCSs) is limited. This study compared sexual health in BCSs 8 years after diagnosis with similarly aged controls and examined the impact of menopausal status at diagnosis and systemic breast cancer treatments on sexual health. METHODS Women aged 20-65 years when diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer in 2011-2012 were identified by the Cancer Registry of Norway (n = 2803) and invited to participate in a nationwide survey. Controls were women from the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4). Sexual functioning and sexual enjoyment were measured by the EORTC QLQ-BR23 subscales scored from 0 to 100, and sexual discomfort by the Sexual Activity Questionnaire scored from 0 to 6. Linear regression analyses with adjustments for sociodemographic and health-related variables were performed to compare groups. Differences of ≥ 10% of range score were considered clinically significant. RESULTS The study samples consisted of 1241 BCSs and 17,751 controls. Sexual enjoyment was poorer (B - 13.1, 95%CI - 15.0, - 11.2) and discomfort higher (B 0.9, 95%CI 0.8, 1.0) among BCSs compared to controls, and larger differences were evident between premenopausal BCSs and controls (B - 17.3, 95%CI - 19.6, - 14.9 and B 1.2, 95%CI 1.0, 1.3, respectively). BCSs treated with both endocrine- and chemotherapy had lower sexual functioning (B - 11.9, 95%CI - 13.8, - 10.1), poorer sexual enjoyment (B - 18.1, 95%CI - 20.7, - 15.5), and more sexual discomfort (B 1.4, 95% 1.3, 1.6) than controls. CONCLUSION Sexual health impairments are more common in BCSs 8 years after diagnosis compared to similar aged population controls. During follow-up, attention to such impairments, especially among women diagnosed at premenopausal age and treated with heavy systemic treatment, is warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE Insight into emotional distress of cancer survivors from ethnic minority groups in Europe is scarce. We aimed to compare distress levels of survivors from ethnic minorities to that of the majority population, determine whether the association between having cancer (yes vs. no) and distress differs among ethnic groups and investigate sociocultural correlates of distress. METHODS Cross-sectional data were derived from HELIUS, a multi-ethnic cohort study conducted in the Netherlands. Of 19,147 participants, 351 were diagnosed with cancer (n = 130 Dutch, n = 75 African Surinamese, n = 53 South-Asian Surinamese, n = 43 Moroccan, n = 28 Turkish, n = 22 Ghanaian). Distress (PHQ-9, MCS-12) and correlates were assessed by self-report. Cancer-related variables were derived from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. RESULTS Survivors were on average 7 years post-diagnosis. Survivors from South-Asian Surinamese, Moroccan, Turkish and Ghanaian origin reported more distress than survivors from Dutch origin (effect sizerange : 0.44-1.17; adjusted models). The association between having cancer or not with distress differed in direction between Dutch and the non-Dutch ethnic groups: Non-Dutch cancer patients tended to have more distress than their cancer-free peers, whereas Dutch cancer patients tended to have less distress than their cancer-free peers. For Moroccan and Turkish patients, the acculturation style of separation/marginalization, compared to integration/assimilation, was associated with higher depressive symptoms. In analyses pooling data from all ethnic minorities, lower health literacy, lower emotional support satisfaction and younger age at the time of migration were associated with higher depressive symptoms. Lower health literacy, fewer emotional support transactions, and more frequent attendance at religious services were associated with worse mental health. CONCLUSION Cancer survivors from ethnic minorities experience more distress than those from the majority population. Culturally sensitive supportive care should be considered.

Abstract
Research has shown that high amounts of dietary phosphorus that are twice the amount of the U.S. dietary reference intake of 700 mg for adults are associated with all-cause mortality, phosphate toxicity, and tumorigenesis. The present nested case-control study measured the relative risk of self-reported breast cancer associated with dietary phosphate intake over 10 annual visits in a cohort of middle-aged U.S. women from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Analyzing data from food frequency questionnaires, the highest level of daily dietary phosphorus intake, >1800 mg of phosphorus, was approximately equivalent to the dietary phosphorus levels in menus promoted by the United States Department of Agriculture. After adjusting for participants' energy intake, this level of dietary phosphorus was associated with a 2.3-fold increased risk of breast cancer incidence compared to the reference dietary phosphorus level of 800 to 1000 mg, which is based on recommendations from the U.S. National Kidney Foundation, (RR: 2.30, 95% CI: 0.94-5.61, p = 0.07). Despite the lack of statistical significance, likely due to the small sample size of the cohort, the present nested case-control study's clinically significant effect size, dose-response, temporality, specificity, biological plausibility, consistency, coherence, and analogy with other research findings meet the criteria for inferred causality in observational studies, warranting further investigations. Furthermore, these findings suggest that a low-phosphate diet should be tested on patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
Importance Patients with cancer experience acute declines in physical function, hypothesized to reflect accelerated aging driven by cancer-related symptoms and effects of cancer therapies. No study has examined long-term trajectories of physical function by cancer site, stage, or treatment compared with cancer-free controls. Objective Examine trajectories of physical function a decade before and after cancer diagnosis among older survivors and cancer-free controls. Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective cohort study enrolled patients from 1993 to 1998 and followed up until December 2020. The Women's Health Initiative, a diverse cohort of postmenopausal women, included 9203 incident cancers (5989 breast, 1352 colorectal, 960 endometrial, and 902 lung) matched to up to 5 controls (n = 45 358) on age/year of enrollment and study arm. Exposures Cancer diagnosis (site, stage, and treatment) via Medicare and medical records. Main Outcomes and Measures Trajectories of self-reported physical function (RAND Short Form 36 [RAND-36] scale; range: 0-100, higher scores indicate superior physical function) estimated from linear mixed effects models with slope changes at diagnosis and 1-year after diagnosis. Results This study included 9203 women with cancer and 45 358 matched controls. For the women with cancer, the mean (SD) age at diagnosis was 73.0 (7.6) years. Prediagnosis, physical function declines of survivors with local cancers were similar to controls; after diagnosis, survivors experienced accelerated declines relative to controls, whose scores declined 1 to 2 points per year. Short-term declines in the year following diagnosis were most severe in women with regional disease (eg, -5.3 [95% CI, -6.4 to -4.3] points per year in regional vs -2.8 [95% CI, -3.4 to -2.3] for local breast cancer) or who received systemic therapy (eg, for local endometrial cancer, -7.9 [95% CI, -12.2 to -3.6] points per year with any chemotherapy; -3.1 [95% CI, -6.0 to -0.3] with radiation therapy alone; and -2.6 [95% CI, -4.2 to -1.0] with neither, respectively). While rates of physical function decline slowed in the later postdiagnosis period (eg, women with regional colorectal cancer declined -4.3 [95% CI, -5.9 to -2.6] points per year in the year following diagnosis vs -1.4 [95% CI, -1.7 to -1.0] points per year in the decade thereafter), survivors had estimated physical function significantly below that of age-matched controls 5 years after diagnosis. Conclusions and Relevance In this prospective cohort study, survivors of cancer experienced accelerated declines in physical function after diagnosis, and physical function remained below that of age-matched controls even years later. Patients with cancer may benefit from supportive interventions to preserve physical functioning.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare sexual functioning from diagnosis to 5 years post diagnosis among breast cancer survivors (BCS) and women without cancer (controls). PATIENTS AND METHODS Analyses included 118 BCS and 1765 controls from 20 years of the longitudinal Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a multiracial/ethnic cohort of mid-life women assessed approximately annually from 1995 to 2015. Pink SWAN participants reported no cancer at SWAN enrollment and developed (BCS) or did not develop (controls) incident breast cancer after enrollment. Outcomes included: being sexually active or not, intercourse frequency, sexual desire, vaginal dryness, and pain with intercourse. Using longitudinal logistic regression, we compared BCS and controls on prevalence of sexual functioning outcomes with respect to years since diagnosis. In addition, we examined whether menopause transition stage, depressive symptoms, relationship satisfaction, vaginal dryness, or pain with intercourse modified the relation between breast cancer and sexual functioning outcomes. RESULTS Adjusting for partner status, both BCS and controls reported similar declines over time in being sexually active, sexual intercourse frequency, and sexual desire. Among sexually active women, more BCS than controls consistently reported vaginal dryness with significant differences between 2 and 4 years post-diagnosis, and pain with intercourse, with statistically significant differences between 0.5 years post-diagnosis to 2 years post-diagnosis. Being post-menopausal and reporting depressive symptoms were significant effect modifiers for pain with intercourse with both variables having positive and stronger associations with pain among the controls than among BCS. CONCLUSION Except for more reporting of vaginal dryness and pain with intercourse among BCS, negative changes in sexual function during mid-life were similar in those with and without breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Variations in symptom development among breast cancer (BC) survivors are understudied. We examined: (Q1) Symptom trajectories of pain, fatigue, insomnia, breast, and arm symptoms in BC survivors, (Q2) possible patterns or cluster-like associations between trajectory classification of different symptoms, and (Q3) characteristics of survivors assigned to high-burden symptom trajectories. MATERIAL AND METHODS Participants were 968 women (mean age = 59.6 years) treated for early-stage BC and followed across a three-year postoperative period. As part of routine follow-up procedures, patients reported symptom burden and functioning levels at each hospital visit using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and the BC-specific module (QLQ-BR-23). Growth mixture modeling (GMM) analysis was used to differentiate potential subgroups of individuals with similar longitudinal symptom patterns, i.e., symptom trajectories (Q1). With this approach, groups experiencing persistent, highly distressing cancer- and treatment-related late effects (LEs) may be identified. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used for Q2 and logistic regression analysis for Q3. RESULTS GMM identified two relatively parallel trajectories across the tested symptoms: The majority of the sample exhibited a low-burden symptom trajectory (74.4-89.2%) and a minority by a high-burden symptom trajectory (10.8-25.6%). LCA revealed that approximately one in five women (18.8%) were likely to be members of the high-burden symptom trajectory across all tested symptoms. In addition to a high probability of being burdened over time across multiple symptoms, these women were also characterized by poorer self-reported physical and social functioning. CONCLUSION A substantial minority followed a high-burden symptom trajectory for several years following BC treatment. Associations were found in trajectory classification across symptoms, indicating that cancer-related LEs appear in clusters of multiple concurrent symptoms.

Abstract
PURPOSE Social support is associated with breast cancer survivors' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). More nuanced information is needed regarding aspects of social support associated with different HRQoL domains among diverse populations. We assessed the association between emotional/informational and tangible support and five HRQoL domains and evaluated race as an effect modifier. METHODS African American and White women (n = 545) diagnosed with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer completed a survey that assessed sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial factors. We assessed bivariate relationships between emotional/informational and tangible support along with overall HRQoL and each HRQoL domain.We tested interactions between race and emotional/informational and tangible social support using linear regression. RESULTS The sample included African American (29%) and White (71%) breast cancer survivors. Emotional/informational social support had a statistically significant positive association with emotional well-being (β = .08, p = 0.005), social well-being (β = 0.36, p < 0.001), functional well-being (β = .22, p < .001), breast cancer concerns (β = .16, p = 0.002), and overall HRQoL (β = .83, p < .001). Similarly, tangible social support had a statistically significant positive association with emotional well-being (β = .14, p = 0.004), social well-being (β = .51, p < .001), functional well-being (β = .39, p < .001), and overall HRQoL (β = 1.27, p < .001). The interactions between race and social support were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Results underscore the importance of the different social support types among breast cancer survivors, regardless of survivors' race. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Population-based interventions can be standardized and disseminated to provide guidance on how to increase emotional/information and tangible support for all breast cancer survivors by caregivers, health providers, and communities.

Abstract
In the past few years, breast cancer has become the most prevalent type of cancer. The majority of patients receive combinatorial chemotherapy treatments, which may result in increased risk of developing drug resistance, a reduced quality of life, and substantial side effects. Treatment modalities that could lessen the physical toll of standard treatments or act in synergy with chemotherapeutic treatments would benefit women worldwide. Research into tocotrienols has thus far demonstrated their potential to be such an agent, with tocotrienols surpassing the pharmacological potential of tocopherols. Further research using in vitro and preclinical breast cancer models to support clinical trials is needed. This review uses bibliometric analysis to highlight this gap in research and summarizes the current and future landscape of tocotrienols as an anti-breast cancer agent.

Abstract
PURPOSE The goal of this study was to characterize health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among patients diagnosed with early-stage, hormone receptor-positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HER2-) breast cancer. METHODS A multinational (United States, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and United Kingdom) study of patients diagnosed with stage I to III HR+/HER2- breast cancer, either receiving adjuvant treatment or under postadjuvant surveillance, was conducted between June and October 2019. Patients were identified by their consulting physician and invited to complete the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) and the EQ-5D-5L pen and paper questionnaires. EQ-5D-5L index scores were derived by using available country-specific health state value sets, where available, and numerically compared with general population scores derived from published normative and population data. Descriptive summary statistics were reported for FACT-B, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) (total and specific subscales), the EQ-5D index scores, and the EQ-VAS scores for each country. Results were stratified according to disease-free treatment status (active adjuvant treatment or postadjuvant surveillance), age (25-44, 45-54, 55-64, or ≥65 years), stage (I, II, or III), and menopausal status at the time of questionnaire completion (pre-/peri-menopausal or postmenopausal). FINDINGS Overall, 1110 patients completed the HRQOL questionnaires (mean age, 59 years; 79% active adjuvant treatment, and 21% under surveillance postadjuvant treatment at time of questionnaire administration; 31% stage I, 48% stage II, and 20% stage III at diagnosis). Of these, 1102 completed the FACT-B and 1083 completed the EQ-5D-5L questionnaires. The mean (SD) FACT-B total score was 99.0 (21.9). The mean FACT-G total score was 72.5 (17.8), which was comparable to the published normative score. The mean EQ-5D index and EQ-VAS scores for each country were similar to corresponding population means; EQ-5D index scores ranged from 0.842 (0.098) in Japan to 0.916 (0.109) in France, and EQ-VAS scores from 68.0 (18.4) in Germany to 78.6 (16.4) in the United States. In addition, mean scores were comparable between the active adjuvant treatment and postadjuvant surveillance groups for the FACT-B total (99.4 [22.5] and 97.7 [19.7], respectively), FACT-G total (72.8 [18.3] and 71.3 [16.0]), EQ-5D index score (0.868 [0.135] and 0.869 [0.142]), and EQ-VAS (74.9 [17.2] and 74.4 [16.1]). IMPLICATIONS Patient-reported HRQOL among patients with HR+/HER2- early breast cancer who were disease-free was high, with reported scores comparable to normative scores. These results improve our understanding of HRQOL among patients with early disease and may facilitate future studies examining the potential impact of adjuvant treatment and disease recurrence, including metastasis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and associated risk factors in older adult breast cancer survivors (BCS) and age-matched non-cancer controls. SAMPLE & SETTING Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare Health Outcome Survey linked dataset from 1998 to 2012, BCS and non-cancer controls aged 65 years or older were identified. METHODS & VARIABLES Depressive symptoms, comorbidities, functional limitations, socio-demographics, and health-related information were examined. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression and marginal models were performed. RESULTS 5,421 BCS and 21,684 controls were identified. BCS and non-cancer controls had similar prevalence of depressive symptoms. Having two or more comorbidities and functional limitations were strongly associated with elevated risk of depressive symptoms in BCS and non-cancer controls. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Having multiple comorbidities and multiple functional status are key factors associated with depressive symptoms in older adult BCS and non-cancer controls. Nurses are in an ideal position to screen older adult BCS and non-cancer controls at risk for depressive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) changes over time in younger compared to older disease-free breast cancer survivors who participated in a prospective randomized exercise trial. METHODS Survivors (aged 35-68 years) were randomized to a 12-month exercise trial after adjuvant treatment and followed up for ten years. HRQoL was assessed with the generic 15D instrument during follow-up and the younger (baseline age ≤ 50) and older (age >50) survivors' HRQoL was compared to that of the age-matched general female population (n = 892). The analysis included 342 survivors. RESULTS The decline of HRQoL compared to the population was steeper and recovery slower in the younger survivors (p for interaction < 0.001). The impairment was also larger among the younger survivors (p = 0.027) whose mean HRQoL deteriorated for three years after treatment and started to slowly improve thereafter but still remained below the population level after ten years (difference -0.017, 95% CI: -0.031 to -0.004). The older survivors' mean HRQoL gradually approached the population level during the first five years but also remained below it at ten years (difference -0.019, 95% CI: -0.031 to -0.007). The largest differences were on the dimensions of sleeping and sexual activity, on which both age groups remained below the population level throughout the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS HRQoL developed differently in younger and older survivors both regarding the most affected dimensions of HRQoL and the timing of the changes during follow-up. HRQoL of both age groups remained below the population level even ten years after treatment.

Abstract
Simple Summary Psychological resilience is an important psychological mechanism that enables a person to successfully handle significant adversities, e.g., a cancer diagnosis. Despite improved prognosis, breast cancer is associated with emotional distress across the trajectory of the disease. This study aimed to investigate psychological resilience and health-related quality of life in Swedish women with breast cancer at diagnosis and one year later. The resilience score declined in the cohort and was associated with health-related quality of life at both time points. Assessment of psychological resilience in breast cancer care might enable the identification of patients in need of intensified rehabilitation to improve their health-related quality of life. Abstract Psychological resilience is considered a major protective psychological mechanism that enables a person to successfully handle significant adversities, e.g., a cancer diagnosis. Higher levels of resilience have been associated with higher levels of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in breast cancer (BC) patients, but research examining the longitudinal process of resilience is limited. The aim of this population-based longitudinal study was to investigate resilience and HRQoL from diagnosis to one year later in 418 Swedish women with primary BC. Resilience was measured with the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale 25, and HRQoL was measured with the Short Form Health Survey. The participants responded to questions regarding demographic and study-specific variables. Clinicopathological variables were collected from the Swedish National Quality Register for Breast Cancer. The mean score for resilience was 70.6 (standard deviation, SD = 13.0) at diagnosis and 68.9 (SD = 14.0) one year later, p < 0.001. The level of trust in the treatment and financial situation demonstrated the greatest association with the change in resilience levels. No oncological treatment modality was associated with a change in resilience levels. HRQoL decreased over time in the cohort. Resilience was positively associated with HRQoL at one year post diagnosis, which demonstrates that resilience is an important factor in maintaining HRQoL.

Abstract
PURPOSE Improvements in diagnosis and treatment of Breast Cancer (BC) have resulted in an increase in the life expectancy of survivors and in the importance of quality of life in BC survivorship care. The current study aimed to assess the Health-Related Quality Of Life (HRQOL) of BC survivors and to investigate the association of comorbidities with HRQOL compared to a group of women with no history of cancer. METHODS Women were residents of the central district in Israel, the case group included 250 women diagnosed with BC between 1999 and 2003, with no prior cancer history and no evidence of disease after 8-12 years. The comparison group included 250 women with no cancer history, individually matched to cases by age and area of residence. Data were collected through in-person interviews, and HRQOL was assessed using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Regression analyses were performed evaluating the influence of demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle characteristics and comorbidities on physical and mental HRQOL. RESULTS The physical and mental summary scores means, were 48.5 ± 11.1 and 49.2 ± 10.8 compared to 51.5 ± 10.2 and 50.9 ± 10.6, in BC survivors and the comparison group, respectively (p = 0.002 and p = 0.097). BC survivors and controls did not differ in number and type of comorbidities and for both groups a negative association was seen with HRQOL. Controlling for age, income, number of comorbidities, BMI and physical activity, BC survivor had decreased physical (b = -2.49, p = 0.001) and mental summary scores (b = -1.27, p = 0.18). CONCLUSION HRQOL of BC survivors should gain more attention in the area of cancer care, especially when comorbidities are present.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survival rates for breast cancer (BC) are increasing, leading to growing interest in treatment-related late-effects. The aim of the present study was to explore late effects using Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in postmenopausal BC survivors in standard follow-up care. The results were compared to age- and gender-matched data from the general Danish population. MATERIAL AND METHODS Postmenopausal BC survivors in routine follow-up care between April 2016 and February 2018 at the Department of Oncology, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark were asked to complete the EORTC QLQ-C30 and BR23 questionnaires together with three items on neuropathy, myalgia, and arthralgia from the PRO-CTCAE. Patients were at different time intervals from primary treatment, enabling a cross-sectional study of reported late effects at different time points after primary treatment. The time intervals used in the analysis were year ≤1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 and 5+. The QLQ-C30 results were compared with reference data from the general Danish female population. Between-group differences are presented as effect sizes (ESs) (Cohen's d). RESULTS A total of 1089 BC survivors participated. Compared with the reference group, BC survivors reported better global health status 2-3 and 4-5 years after surgery (d = 0.26) and physical functioning 2-3 years after (0.21). Poorer outcomes in BC survivors compared with the reference group were found for cognitive functioning (0-4 and 5+ years), fatigue (0-2 years), insomnia (1-3 years), emotional functioning (3-4 years), and social functioning (≤1 year after surgery) with ESs ranging from 0.20 to 0.41. For the remaining outcomes, no ESs exceeded 0.20. CONCLUSION Only small to medium ESs were found for better global health and physical functioning and poorer outcomes for cognitive functioning, fatigue, insomnia, emotional functioning, and social functioning in postmenopausal BC survivors, who otherwise reported similar overall health-related quality of life compared with the general Danish female population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Among breast cancer survivors, elevated inflammation has been linked to greater recurrence risk. Psychological processes, such as cancer-related distress, can pose threats to a survivor's longevity and wellbeing. Although distress can heighten inflammation, little is known about how fluctuations in distress during and after treatment impact a woman's own inflammation - the primary question of this study. METHODS Breast cancer survivors (n = 165, stages 0-III) completed a baseline visit before treatment and two follow-up visits 6 and 18 months after. At each visit, women completed the Impact of Events Scale to assess cancer-related distress, and a blood sample was collected to measure proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8. This longitudinal study related fluctuations in survivor's own cancer-related distress (i.e., within-person effects), as well as average effects of cancer-related distress between survivors (i.e., between-person effects) to inflammatory changes across visits. RESULTS Women had elevated inflammation at visits where they expressed more cancer-related distress than what was typical. In contrast, the average cancer-related distress was not associated with inflammation. CONCLUSION Larger increases in a women's cancer-related distress was linked with higher inflammation across visits. Comparing a survivor's own cancer-related distress to her average levels may prove useful in identifying links between distress and inflammation.
