Abstract
Biodegradable and biocompatible polymer-based nanoparticles (NPs) hold great promise for various industries. We report the first development of composite NPs consisting of starch (St) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using the nanoprecipitation technique with ethanol as an antisolvent. We varied the St:PVA ratios in the precursor solutions to evaluate their impact on the structure and properties of the composite NPs. The ratios used were 4:1, 1:1, and 1:4. Characterization by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis revealed distinct XRD and TGA patterns for the composite St/PVANPs compared to their corresponding physical blends. This indicated the presence of mixed St/PVA crystallites within their structures. Additionally, the crystallinity of St/PVANPs increased with rising St content. Dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy showed that nanoparticle sizes increased with higher PVA proportions. The St/PVANPs showed superior performance as stabilizers in Pickering emulsions, forming denser continuous networks in the gel-like structure of the emulsions. Additionally, increasing the PVA content in the composition of St/PVANPs strengthened the structure of Pickering emulsions. The emulsion stabilized by St20/PVA80NPs showed exceptional stability for one month. These findings highlight the potential of St/PVANPs as innovative materials for various applications, including emulsion stabilization.

Abstract
Due to their high surface area and low weight, silica aerogels are ideally suited for several uses, including drug delivery, catalysis, and insulation. Oil-water-oil (OWO) double emulsion is a simple and regulated technique for encasing a volatile oil phase in a silica shell to produce hollow silica (SiO2) aerogel particles by using hydrophilic and hydrophobic emulsifiers. In this study, the oil-water-oil (OWO) double emulsion method was implemented to synthesize surface-modified hollow silica (SiO2) aerogel particles in a facile and effective way. This investigation mainly focused on the influence of the N-hexane-to-water glass (OW) ratio (r) in the first emulsion, silica (water glass) content concentration (x), and surfactant concentration (s) variations. Furthermore, surface modification techniques were utilized to customize the aerogel's characteristics. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed no imprints of impurities except SiO2. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images highlight the hollow microstructure of silica particles. Zeta potential was used to determine particle size analysis of hollow silica aerogel particles. The oil-water-oil (OWO) double emulsion approach was successfully employed to synthesize surface-modified hollow silica (SiO2) aerogel particles, providing precise control over the particle characteristics. By the influence of the optimization condition, this approach improves the aerogel's potential applications in drug delivery, catalysis, and insulation by enabling surface modifications.

Abstract
We employed microemulsion combined with the solvent evaporation technique to produce biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) MCs, containing encapsulated isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), to act as crosslinkers in high-performance adhesive formulations. The MC production process was optimized by applying a design of experiment (DoE) statistical approach, aimed at decreasing the MCs' average size. For that, three different factors were considered, namely the concentration of two emulsifiers, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gum arabic (GA); and the oil-to-water phase ratio of the emulsion. The significance of each factor was evaluated, and a predictive model was developed. We were able to decrease the average MC size from 326 μm to 70 µm, maintaining a high encapsulation yield of approximately 60% of the MCs' weight, and a very satisfactory shelf life. The MCs' average size optimization enabled us to obtain an improved distributive and dispersive mixture of isocyanate-loaded MCs at the adhesive bond. The MCs' suitability as crosslinkers for footwear adhesives was assessed following industry standards. Peel tests revealed peel strength values above the minimum required for casual footwear, while the creep test results indicated an effective crosslinking of the adhesive. These results confirm the ability of the MCs to release IPDI during the adhesion process and act as crosslinkers for new adhesive formulations.

Abstract
The aim of the current study is to develop and characterise novel complex multi-phase in vitro 3D models, for advanced microbiological studies. More specifically, we enriched our previously developed bi-phasic polysaccharide (Xanthan Gum)/protein (Whey Protein) 3D model with a fat phase (Sunflower Oil) at various concentrations, i.e., 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% (v/v), for better mimicry of the structural and biochemical composition of real food products. Rheological, textural, and physicochemical analysis as well as advanced microscopy imaging (including spatial mapping of the fat droplet distribution) of the new tri-phasic 3D models revealed their similarity to industrial food products (especially cheese products). Furthermore, microbial growth experiments of foodborne bacteria, i.e., Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Lactococcus lactis on the surface of the 3D models revealed very interesting results, regarding the growth dynamics and distribution of cells at colony level. More specifically, the size of the colonies formed on the surface of the 3D models, increased substantially for increasing fat concentrations, especially in mid- and late-exponential growth phases. Furthermore, colonies formed in proximity to fat were substantially larger as compared to the ones that were located far from the fat phase of the models. In terms of growth location, the majority of colonies were located on the protein/polysaccharide phase of the 3D models. All those differences at microscopic level, that can directly affect the bacterial response to decontamination treatments, were not captured by the macroscopic kinetics (growth dynamics), which were unaffected from changes in fat concentration. Our findings demonstrate the importance of developing structurally and biochemically complex 3D in vitro models (for closer proximity to industrial products), as well as the necessity of conducting multi-level microbial analyses, to better understand and predict the bacterial behaviour in relation to their biochemical and structural environment. Such studies in advanced 3D environments can assist a better/more accurate design of industrial antimicrobial processes, ultimately, improving food safety.

Abstract
St. John's wort in western Europe has been extensively utilized for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. Hypericin, a red pigment, is found to be responsible for its antidepressant activity. The aim of the current study was to prepare a nanoemulsion (O/W) of hypericin designed for immediate delivery of the drug to the brain for the treatment of depression. The nanoemulsion was prepared by means of a homogenization technique, and that was followed by its physicochemical evaluation. Tween-80, Span-80, β-cyclodextrin, ethanol, and eucalyptus oil were utilized for the manufacturing of the nanoemulsion. Morphological studies have revealed globular structures of nanosize that were confirmed by the zeta analysis. The consistency of particles was revealed by the low polydispersity values. pH values of all formulations lay within the range of nasal pH. The viscosity of the prepared formulations was affected by the increase in concentrations of β-cyclodextrin. After passing from the centrifugation and freeze-thaw studies, the prepared formulations showed good stability. Formulation F2 having a composition of oil phase (0.125 mL), aqueous phase (1.25 mL), and β-cyclodextrin (8%) showed the best results out of all the formulations, and F2 had a pH of 5.7, 5.35 cP viscosity, 1.332 refractive index, 148.8 globule size, and -10.8 zeta potential. The mean percentage drug release and in vitro and ex vivo percentage drug permeations were observed to be 71.75, 76, and 75.07%, respectively. Meanwhile, formulation F2 showed the maximum drug release and permeation. In vivo behavior studies including the open field test, elevated plus maze test, and tail suspension test were conducted to see the antidepressant effect of hypericin along with comparison with a commercially available treatment. In conclusion, the prepared formulation shows good efficacy as an antidepressant and can be considered as a natural alternative over synthetic drugs.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the physical stability and rheological properties of an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by a konjac glucomannan-whey protein (KGM-WP) mixture at a konjac glucomannan concentration of 0.1-0.5% (w/w) and a whey protein concentration of 1.0-3.0% (w/w). The droplet size, microstructure, stackability, flow behavior, and viscoelastic properties were measured. The experimental results showed that with an increase in KGM and WP concentrations, the droplet size (D4,3) of the emulsion gradually decreased to 12.9 μm, and the macroscopic performance of the emulsion was a gel-like structure that can be inverted and resist flow and can also be extruded and stacked. The static shear viscosity and viscoelasticity generally increased with the increase of konjac glucomannan and whey protein concentration. Emulsions were pseudo-plastic fluids with shear thinning behavior (flow behavior index: 0.15 ≤ n ≤ 0.49) and exhibited viscoelastic behavior with a storage modulus (G') greater than their loss modulus (G″), indicating that the samples all had gel-like behavior (0.10 < n' < 0.22). Moreover, storage modulus and loss modulus of all samples increased with increasing KGM and WP concentrations. When the concentration of konjac glucomannan was 0.3% w/w, the emulsion had similar rheological behavior to commercial mayonnaise. These results suggested that the KGM-WP mixture can be used as an effective substitute for egg yolk to make a cholesterol-free mayonnaise-like emulsion. The knowledge obtained here had important implications for the application of protein-polysaccharide mixtures as emulsifiers/stabilizers to make mayonnaise-like emulsions in sauce and condiments.

Abstract
The cosmetics industry is searching for efficient and sustainable substances capable of stabilizing emulsions or colloidal dispersions that are thermodynamically unstable because of their high surface energy. Therefore, surfactants are commonly used to stabilize the water/oil interface. However, the presence of a surfactant is not always sufficient to obtain stable emulsions on the one hand, and conventional surfactants are often subject to such controversies as their petroleum origin and environmental concerns on the other hand. As a consequence, among other challenges, it is obvious that research related to new-natural, biodegradable, biocompatible, available, competitive-surfactants are nowadays more intensive. This study aims to valorize a natural gum from Triumfetta cordifolia (T. cordifolia) as a sustainable emulsifier and stabilizer for oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, and to evaluate how the nature of the fatty phase could affect this potential. To this end, O/W emulsions were prepared at room temperature using three different oils varying in composition, using a rotor-stator mixer. Resulting mixtures were characterized using optical microscopy, laser granulometry, rheology, pH and stability monitoring over time. The results demonstrated good potential for the gum as an emulsifying agent. T. cordifolia gum appears efficient even at very low concentrations (0.2% w/w) for the preparation and stabilization of the different O/W emulsions. The best results were observed for cocoglyceride oil due to its stronger effect of lowering interfacial tension (IFT) thus acting as a co-emulsifier. Therefore, overall results showed that T. cordifolia gum is undoubtedly a highly promising new bio-sourced and environmentally friendly emulsifier/stabilizer for many applications including cosmetics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nanoemulsions were prepared as an encapsulation and delivery system for vitexin, a poorly water-soluble antioxidant. This study evaluated how the type and concentration of the dispersed oil phase and vitexin loading impacted droplet characteristics and nanoemulsion stability. The influences of storage temperature on antioxidant activity and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on nanoemulsion stability were also investigated. RESULTS Nanoemulsions prepared at different dispersed oil concentrations showed diverse characteristics and stability. Highest stability against droplet aggregation and phase separation with small oil droplets (< 150 nm) was observed for nanoemulsions prepared using 300 g kg-1 medium-chain triglyceride oil. These nanoemulsions are able to entrap and deliver vitexin with high encapsulation efficiency (88-90%) with no significant effect on emulsion stability. Vitexin-loaded nanoemulsions were stable during storage when refrigerated (4 °C) and at room temperature (25 °C) for up to 45 days with no effect on their antioxidant activity. Significantly delayed lipolysis rate and decreased extent of lipid digestion were observed in vitexin-loaded nanoemulsions. CONCLUSIONS Stable vitexin-loaded nanoemulsions were successfully produced by high-pressure homogenization using a mixture of Tween 80 and lecithin as emulsifiers. Vitexin-loaded nanoemulsions stabilized with a mixture of these two emulsifiers were effective in retaining antioxidant activity during storage and protecting vitexin from changes during gastrointestinal digestion. Our results suggested that nanoemulsions were effective vitexin delivery systems for food applications. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The main function of vitamin C, as an antioxidant, is to combat free radicals and prevent premature aging, smoothing wrinkles and expression lines. In addition, it acts directly on depigmentation and prevention of blemishes on the skin. In this study, natural oils (30 wt.%) and α-tocopherol (2.5 wt.%) containing oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions stabilized with the bacterial fucose-rich polysaccharide FucoPol were formulated, adding L-ascorbic acid as an antioxidant. The optimized formulations were obtained with 8.0 wt.% L-ascorbic acid for the Olea europaea oil formulation (C1) with a ƞ value of 2.71 Pa.s (measured at shear rate of 2.3 s−1) and E24 = 96% and with 15 wt.% L-ascorbic acid for the Prunus amygdalus dulcis formulation (C2) with a ƞ value of 5.15 Pa.s (at a shear rate of 2.3 s−1) and E24 = 99%. The stability of the FucoPol-based formulations was investigated over 45 days at 4 °C, 20 °C, and 30 °C. The results showed that all formulations maintained the organoleptic characteristics, with pH variations (5.7–6.8 for C1, and 5.5–6.03 for C2) within the regulations for cosmetic products (4 ≤ pH ≤ 7). The accelerated stability tests proved the formulations’ stability at 4 °C with EI = 95% for C1 and EI = 100% for C2. The rheological assessment demonstrated that the formulation presents a shear-thinning and liquid-like behavior. Regarding textural parameters, formulations C1 and C2 displayed an increase in firmness and consistency with similar spreadability during the shelf life. These findings further demonstrate FucoPol’s functional properties, acting as an emulsifier and stabilizer polysaccharide in cosmetic formulations containing L-ascorbic acid.

Abstract
With the advent of biodiesel as a substitute/additive for diesel, the production of glycerol has experienced an increase, as it is an unavoidable byproduct of the biodiesel process; therefore, novel products and processes based on this triol are being very actively researched. Glycerol carbonate emerges as an advanced humectant from glycerol and a monomer for diverse polycarbonates. Its production in high yields and amounts can be achieved through the solventless transcarbonation of glycerol with other organic carbonates driven by alkaline catalysts, standing out amongst the cyclic carbonates due to its reactivity. Here, we have studied the main operational variables that affect the transcarbonation reaction of glycerol and ethylene carbonate catalyzed by zinc stearate: catalyst concentration, reagent molar ratio, and temperature. Subsequently, an appropriate kinetic model was fitted to all data obtained at 80 °C and several catalyst concentrations as well as reagent molar ratios. Finally, the selected kinetic model was extended and validated by fitting it to data obtained at several temperatures, finding that the activation energy of this reaction with this catalyst is around 69.2 kJ·mol-1. The kinetic model suggests that the reaction is bimolecular and elemental and that the process is interfacial in essence, with the catalyst dispersed in a narrow space between polar (glycerol) and nonpolar (ethylene carbonate) phases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A combined treatment using both low-frequency (20 kHz) and high-frequency ultrasounds (1.63 MHz) is a promising new process to stabilize emulsions with minimalist formulation. In order to optimize process parameters, a Doehlert experimental design was performed with oil-in-water emulsions, presently used for cosmetic products, composed of water, caprylic/capric triglycerides and oleic acid. METHODS Effects of treatment time, oil content and oleic acid content were studied on emulsion properties (droplet size, polydispersity index, ζ-potential and yield of oil incorporation) and on emulsion stability after a 28-day storage (creaming index, Turbiscan stability index (TSI) and oil release). RESULTS From experimental data, a model was established that allowed to study effects of each parameter and their interactions on emulsion formation and stability. Oleic acid content had a great impact on emulsion formation: It reduced droplet size, PDI and ζ-potential and increased yield of oil incorporation. However, a critical value could be highlighted, beyond which oleic acid effects reversed. Treatment time had an important beneficial effect on emulsion stability as it decreased creaming index, TSI and oil release after 28 days of storage. Oil content had a negative effect on emulsion formation and on emulsion stability. However, treatment time and oil content often had a beneficial synergistic effect. CONCLUSION The optimized conditions for emulsion processing were obtained through a desirability approach. They were experimentally validated.

Abstract
Driven by the customers' growing awareness of environmental issues, the production of topical formulations based on sustainable ingredients is receiving widespread attention from researchers and the industry. Although numerous sustainable ingredients (natural, organic, or green chemistry-derived compounds) have been investigated, there is a lack of comparative studies between conventional ingredients and sustainable alternatives. In this study, olive oil (30 wt.%) and α-tocopherol (2.5 wt.%) containing oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions stabilized with the bacterial fucose-rich polysaccharide FucoPol were formulated envisaging their validation as cosmetic creams. After formula composition design by Response Surface Methodology (RSM), the optimized FucoPol-based emulsion was prepared with 1.5 wt.% FucoPol, 1.5 wt.% cetyl alcohol, and 3.0 wt.% glycerin. The resulting emulsions had an apparent viscosity of 8.72 Pa.s (measured at a shear rate 2.3 s-1) and droplet size and zeta potential values of 6.12 µm and -97.9 mV, respectively, which are within the values reported for cosmetic emulsified formulations. The optimized formulation displayed the desired criterium of a thin emulsion system, possessing the physicochemical properties and the stability comparable to those of commercially available products used in cosmeceutical applications.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions are optically transparent and offer good stability, bioavailability, and control over the targeted delivery and release of lipophilic active components. In this study, pea protein isolate (PPI)-stabilized O/W nanoemulsions were evaluated using response surface methodology to obtain optimized ultra-nanoemulsions of Sauter mean diameter (D3,2) < 100 nm using a high-pressure homogenizer (HPH). Furthermore, the effect of food matrix electrolytes, i.e., the pH and ionic strength, on the emulsion (prepared at optimized conditions) was investigated. The results revealed that the droplet size distribution of emulsions was mainly influenced by the PPI concentration and the interaction of oil concentration and HPH pressure. Moreover, a non-significant increase in droplet size was observed when the nanoemulsions (having an initial D3,2 < 100 nm) were stored at 4 °C for 7 days. Based on the current experimental design, nanoemulsions with a droplet size < 100 nm can effectively be prepared with a high PPI concentration (6.35%), with less oil (1.95%), and at high HPH pressure (46.82 MPa). Such emulsions were capable of maintaining a droplet size below 100 nm even at ionic conditions of up to 400 mM NaCl and at acidic pH.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common type of metabolic liver disease which is characterized by fatty changes associated with hepatocyte injury, lobular inflammation, and/or liver fibrosis. Nanoemulsions are kinetically stable colloidal systems characterized by small droplet size. Hemp seed oil is a natural oil derived from Cannabis sativa seeds. The current study was designed to formulate nanoemulsion preparations of hemp seed oil with promising enhanced biological activity against high fat (HF) diet induced NASH in rats. Four nanoemulsion formulas (NEFs) were formulated based on high-pressure homogenization technique and evaluated for droplet size, zeta potential (ZP), polydispersity index (PDI), electrical conductivity, pH, and viscosity, as well as the preparation stability. The best NEF was selected to perform an in vivo rat study; selection was based on the smallest droplet size and highest physical stability. Results showed that NEF#4 showed the best physiochemical characters among the other preparations. Twenty male rats were assigned to four groups as follows: normal, NASH control, NASH + hemp seed oil and NASH + hemp seed oil NEF4. The rats were tested for body weight (BWt) change, insulin resistance (IR) and hepatic pathology. The hemp seed NEF#4 protected against NASH progression in rats and decreased the % of BWt gain compared to the original Hemp seed oil. NEF#4 of Hemp seed oil showed greater protective activity against experimental NASH and IR in rats. Hence, we can consider the nanoemulsion preparations as a useful tool for enhancing the biological action of the hemp seed oil, and further studies are warranted for application of this technique for preparing natural oils aiming at enhancing their activities.

Abstract
Lipid emulsification is a technique that is being explored for improving the bioavailability of omega 3 (n-3) long chain (LC) fatty acid (FA). The nature of the emulsifiers can differently impact the lipid bioavailability via a modification of the lipolysis step. Among natural emulsifiers, gum acacia (GA), an indigestible polysaccharide, provides protective encapsulation of n-3 by forming a specifically crown-like shape around lipid drops, which could also impact the digestion step. Despite the interest in lipolysis rate, the impact of GA on lipid bioavailability has never been explored in a complete physiological context. Thus, we followed in a kinetics study the n-3 bioavailability in rat lymph, orally administered DHA-rich oil, formulated based on GA compared to the bulk phase form of the oil. The AUC values were significantly improved by +121% for total TG and by 321% for n-3 PUFA, specifically for EPA (+244%) and for DHA (+345%). Benefits of GA have also been related to the transport of FA in lymph, which was 2 h earlier (Tmax = 4 h), compared to the Tmax (6 h) obtained with the bulk phase oil. All the data showed that GA is one of the most favorable candidates of natural emulsifiers to improve n-3 bioavailability and their rate of absorption for health targets.

Abstract
It has been shown that structured lipids, formed in the process of enzymatic modification of natural hard fat with walnut oil, are capable of stabilizing emulsion systems without the need to add additional emulsifiers. This is especially true for emulsions containing fat formed during enzymatic modification when the amount of added water to the reaction catalyst was in the range of 12–16 wt%. Physicochemical evaluations, i.e., the average particle size, its growth, distribution, and dispersity coefficient, were comparable with the reference emulsion where the emulsifier was lecithin, well-known for its emulsifying properties. Microstructure studies also confirmed the above observations. Rheological studies performed on a set of emulsions containing structured lipids of variable composition confirmed that interesterified lipid blends can be directly utilized as a fat base in the preparation of stable emulsions. The consistency, thixotropic behavior, long-term shelf life, and thermal stability of these emulsions were found to be comparable to systems stabilized with conventional emulsifiers, i.e., sunflower lecithine. Our approach offers the opportunity for the preparation of stable emulsion systems, free from additional emulsifiers, for the food or cosmetics industry, which is extremely important from the point of view of the preparation of products free from allergens.

Abstract
A spray-dried cholesterol free salad dressing powder was developed using mixed mono- and diglycerides (MG-DG) as emulsifier. The optimum conditions for enzymatic synthesis of the MG-DG from rice bran oil (RBO) and glycerol (Gly) using Candida antarctica lipase was investigated. The synthesis was done by glycerolysis of refined RBO and Gly at molar ratios of 2:1, 2.5:1 and 3:1 (Gly to RBO) and enzyme concentrations of 2% and 5%. Highest MG and DG yield (0.54 ± 0.01 and 0.49.03 ± 0.0 mg/mL) was obtained in sample prepared using 2:1 molar ratio and 5% enzyme concentration and this sample is considered optimum. Salad dressings prepared using 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% MG-DG concentration (of optimum MG-DG) were spray dried at inlet temperatures of 150, 160 and 170 °C to find the best conditions. Salad dressing of 0.5% MG-DG spray-dried at 170 °C had the highest powder yield (42.70%), solubility (98.04%) and stability (100%). After reconstitution, this optimum sample was compared well next to a control salad dressing prepared using commercial distilled monoglycerides. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of preparing a spray dried salad dressing powder with the synthesized MG-DG as an emulsifier.

Abstract
During oil spills in the field or for laboratory incubation studies, different oil concentrations are often encountered or applied, yet how initial oil concentration affects biodegradation rates of hydrocarbons and the development of oil degraders remains unclear. We incubated seawater for 50 d with different oil concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 ppm). n-Alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the bacterial community were analyzed periodically. Results show that the biodegradation rates of alkanes, derived from first order kinetics, decreased with increasing oil concentration, but percent residual was ~50% regardless of the initial concentration. In contrast, the biodegradation rates of PAHs increased with concentration, and the percent residual increased with oil concentration. Increasing oil concentration resulted in increased abundances of Rhodobacterales, Altererythrobacter, and Neptuniibacter. However, Alcanivorax abundance was barely detected in 400 and 800 ppm. Overall, oil concentration critically affected the degradation of hydrocarbons and the bacterial community.

Abstract
Sildenafil citrate is a drug used throughout the world primarily to treat erectile dysfunction. Several problems with the commercially available product decrease its efficacy, such as limited solubility, delayed onset of action, and low bioavailability with a large variability in the absorption profile. This study aimed to develop an optimized self-nanoemulsifying lyophilized tablet for the drug to conquer the foresaid problems. Sildenafil solubility in various surfactants, oils, and cosurfactants was attempted. An optimized formulation of a loaded self-nanoemulsion with a small droplet size was developed by applying a special cubic model of the mixture design. Sixteen formulations were prepared and characterized for droplet size. On the basis of solubility studies, a clove oil/oleic acid mixture, polysorbate 20 (Tween 20), and propylene glycol were selected as the proposed oil, surfactant, and cosurfactant, respectively. On the basis of desirability, an optimized sildenafil citrate-loaded self-nanoemulsifying delivery system containing 10% of the oil mixture, 60% of the surfactant, and 30% of the cosurfactant had a droplet size of 65 nm. Subsequently, the tablet form was fabricated with optimum ratios of 0.4% fumed silica, 0.1% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and 0.4% sodium starch glycolate. This formula showed satisfactory results in both disintegration and dissolution studies. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies indicated a higher bioavailability (1.44 times) and rapid absorption profile for the study’s tablets compared with commercially available tablets. In conclusion, highly bioavailable oral lyophilized flash tablets of sildenafil were successfully prepared. They will be a good alternative to the conventional solid-dosage form.

Abstract
Gout is the most familiar inflammatory arthritis condition caused by the elevation of uric acid in the bloodstream. Febuxostat (FBX) is the latest drug approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. FBX is characterized by low solubility resulting in poor gastrointestinal bioavailability. This study aimed at improving the oral bioavailability of FBX by its incorporation into self-nanoemulsifying delivery systems (SNEDS) with minimum globule size and maximum stability index. The SNEDS-incorporated FBX was loaded into a carrier substrate with a large surface area and lyophilized with other excipients to produce a fluffy, porous-like structure tablet for the transmucosal delivery of FBX. The solubility of FBX was studied in various oils, surfactants, and cosurfactants. Extreme vertices design was utilized to optimize FBX-SNEDS, and subsequently loaded into lyophilized tablets along with suitable excipients. The percentages of the main tablet excipients were optimized using a Box–Behnken design to develop self-nanoemulsifying lyophilized tablets (SNELTs) with minimum disintegration time and maximum drug release. The pharmacokinetics parameters of the optimized FBX-SNELTs were tested in healthy human volunteers in comparison with the marketed FBX tablets. The results revealed that the optimized FBX-SNELTs increased the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and decreased the time to reach Cmax (Tmax) with a large area under the curve (AUC) as a result of the enhanced relative oral bioavailability of 146.4%. The significant enhancement of FBX bioavailability is expected to lead to reduced side effects and frequency of administration during the treatment of gout.

Abstract
The size of active pharmaceutical ingredient carrier is one of the key properties considered during design of submicron drug delivery systems. Particle diameter may determine drug biodistribution, cellular uptake, and elimination path. Solvent evaporation technique is a flexible method of particle preparation, in which various macromolecules and drugs may be employed. Parameters of emulsion obtained as first step of particle preparation are crucial in terms of particle size, drug loading, and morphology. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of emulsion preparation parameters on diameter of resulting particles. Impact of surfactant type and concentration, homogenization time, homogenization rate, phase ratio, and conjugate concentration were evaluated. Model drug lamivudine was covalently bound to polymer and applied in solvent evaporation method in order to overcome issues related to drug loading and provide method-independent incorporation. Synthesized drug-polymer conjugate and obtained particles were evaluated via dynamic light scattering, chromatography, scanning electron microscopy, and spectroscopic methods. Covalent bonding between drug and polymeric chain was confirmed, estimated drug content per milligram of conjugate was 19 μg. Among employed colloid stabilizer, poly(vinyl alcohol) was proven to be most effective. Homogenization rate and surfactant concentration were identified as crucial parameters in terms of particle diameter control.

Abstract
An apparatus for direct determination of the spectral resolved scattering phase function of suspensions and emulsions is described. The system consists of a polychromatic xenon lamp as a light source and a spectrometer as a detector. Together with a stepper motor, the system enables spectrally and angularly resolved measurements in the range of 450 nm-950 nm and 10°-170°, respectively. A model for light propagation inside the cuvette in the regime of single scattering, which also takes the spectral dimension into account, was developed. A postprocessing algorithm applying the model and an extrapolation to the measured angular data allows a direct determination of the complete scattering phase function. By comparing measurements on polystyrene microspheres with Mie theory, the concept of the presented instrument was validated. Finally, the method was used to determine the scattering phase function of different types and brands of soybean oil emulsions such as Intralipid or Lipovenös. The measured scattering phase functions were then used to calculate the corresponding Legendre moments to an order of 20 and for wavelengths between 450 nm and 750 nm (available online), which besides the anisotropy factor also allow the determination of higher order factors such as gamma.

Abstract
Delivery of drugs and active agents to human skin by formulation containing nanosystems have shown remarkable advance in recent nanotechnology research. The aim of current investigation is to study protein drug, extracted from medicinal leech tissue and evaluate an isotropic and kinetically stable nanoemulsion formulation, with least surfactant and co-surfactant concentrations also with optimal solubility and stability, for topical delivery. It is a fact that physical properties of oil phase has an impact on nanoemulsion formation and stabilization. In this research, various factors, such as oil types (olive oil and sesame oil) and oil content for their effects on particle size and stability of protein nanoemulsion were first investigated. Secondly, optimized formulation of protein nanoemulsion was characterized by droplet size and zeta potential analysis, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), viscosity, pH, and refractive index. Thirdly, stability studies were done to select the best formulation. The results of our experiments showed that an increase in the concentration of olive oil and sesame oil led to a nanoemulsion with smaller size of droplets and with higher stability, respectively. However; slight variations in droplet size were observed in case of nanoemulsion with olive oil. As a result of various experiments, a Nanoemulsion with 25% olive oil was selected as optimized formulation owing to its much smaller droplet size (143.1 nm), lower polydispersity index, higher zeta potential (-33.3 mV). No considerable changes in droplet size, viscosity and pH occurred during a 30-day storage period at 4 °C. This procedure also suggested that our selected nanoemulsion was physically stable. Additionally, TEM revealed that particles were morphologically spherical. In conclusion, our analyses of the experiments proved the fact that nanoemulsions are promising novel formulations for protein drugs and can greatly enhance stability of protein drugs.

Abstract
Soybean Protein Isolate (SPI) is a by-product from soybean oil industries with good nutritional and functional properties. Denaturation of hydrated SPI can change its properties, allowing the formation of gel-like particles, which can be used to stabilize emulsions without addition of surfactants. SPI microgel particles were produced by denaturation of hydrated SPI, followed by high pressure homogenization or sonication, with different NaCl or NaF contents, aiming the formation of small particles capable to stabilize O/W emulsions and acting as wall material for microencapsulation of soybean oil by spray drying. The presence of NaF in the suspensions decreased the charge intensity of SPI microgels, leading to formation of significantly bigger SPI microgel particles. Based on Creaming Index (CI), all the emulsions were stable for, at least, 21 days at room temperature. The presence of salt affected minimally the droplet size of the emulsions, though there has been an increase in flocculation. All the emulsions presented shear-thinning behavior and a strong shear rate dependence when salt was present in the system. The microspheres produced by spray drying of the emulsions were spherical and showed few aggregate formation. In addition, they presented high values of oil retention (> 80 wt%) and acceptable values of moisture content (< 4 wt%). SPI microgel particles produced by high-pressure homogenization or sonication may be used to stabilize emulsions with low oil contents. These emulsions can be further spray dried to microencapsulate lipophilic compounds using SPI microgels as wall material.

Abstract
The physical and oxidative stability of high-fat omega-3 delivery systems such as fish oil-in-water emulsions stabilized with combinations of sodium caseinate (CAS) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) was optimized. The influence of fish oil content (50, 60 and 70%, w/w), amount of total emulsifier CAS + PC (1.4, 2.1 and 2.8%, w/w) and ratio between CAS and PC (0.4, 1.2 and 2) on physical and oxidative parameters was investigated. Creaming and droplet size significantly decreased when the amount of fish oil, total emulsifier and ratio of CAS to PC were increased. Viscosity decreased significantly with decreasing fish oil content, whereas the ratio of CAS to PC did not have a significant influence. Decreasing the ratio of CAS to PC led to emulsions with a significantly lower concentration of 1-penten-3-ol, while no significant effect was found for other volatiles such as (E)-2-pentenal, (E)-2-hexenal and (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal.

Abstract
Alginate (Alg) is a renewable polymer with excellent hemostatic properties and biocapability and is widely used for hemostatic wound dressing. However, the swelling properties of alginate-based wound dressings need to be promoted to meet the requirements of wider application. Poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA) is a natural polymer with high hydrophility. In the current study, novel Alg/PGA composite microparticles with double network structure were prepared by the emulsification/internal gelation method. It was found from the structure characterization that a double network structure was formed in the composite microparticles due to the ion chelation interaction between Ca2+ and the carboxylate groups of Alg and PGA and the electrostatic interaction between the secondary amine group of PGA and the carboxylate groups of Alg and PGA. The swelling behavior of the composite microparticles was significantly improved due to the high hydrophility of PGA. Influences of the preparing conditions on the swelling behavior of the composites were investigated. The porous microparticles could be formed while compositing of PGA. Thermal stability was studied by thermogravimetric analysis method. Moreover, in vitro cytocompatibility test of microparticles exhibited good biocompatibility with L929 cells. All results indicated that such Alg/PGA composite microparticles are a promising candidate in the field of wound dressing for hemostasis or rapid removal of exudates.

Abstract
The present paper reports on the use of phenolic extracts from olive mill wastewater (OMW) in model olive oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions to study their effect on their physical and chemical stability. Spray-dried OMW polyphenols were added to a model 20% olive O/W emulsion stabilized with whey protein isolate (WPI) and xanthan gum, in phosphate buffer solution at pH 7. The emulsions were characterised under accelerated storage conditions (40 °C) up to 30 days. Physical stability was evaluated by analysing the creaming rate, mean particle size distribution and mean droplet size, viscosity and rheological properties, while chemical stability was assessed through the measurement of primary and secondary oxidation products. The rheological behaviour and creaming stability of the emulsions were dramatically improved by using xanthan gum, whereas the concentration of WPI and the addition of encapsulated OMW phenolics did not result in a significant improvement of physical stability. The formation of oxidation products was higher when higher concentrations of encapsulated polyphenols were used, indicating a possible binding with the WPI added in the system as a natural emulsifier. This paper might help in solving the issue of using the olive mill wastewater from olive processing in formulating functional food products with high antioxidant activity and improved health properties.
