Abstract
The development of a simple, rapid, and sensitive method for monitoring antibiotic residues is crucial for maintaining food safety. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence probe based on bimetallic organic framework (Eu/Zr-MOF) was developed for the detection of tetracycline (TC). The Eu/Zr-MOF was synthesized by the coordination of Eu3+ and Zr4+ with 2-APDC, which exhibited a grape-like cluster morphology and dual-emitting fluorescence at 430 nm/616 nm. Based on the internal filtering effect (IFE), significant fluorescence quenching was observed at 430 nm, whereas only slight changes occurred at 616 nm. The ratiometric sensing offered two broad linear ranges (0.5-8 μg/mL; 10-60 μg/mL) and a low detection limit (26.7 ng/mL). The proposed method was applied to the determination of TC in pork and water samples. Fluorescent sensors have the advantages of simple design, fast response, and high sensitivity, thus providing a promising means for evaluating the safety of food contaminated with TC.

Abstract
A comprehensive study was performed to determine an optimum enantioseparation method for fluorine-substituted amphetamine and cathinone derivatives (fluor-amphetamine and fluor-cathinone derivatives), using a binary system consisting of carboxymethyl-β-CD (CM-β-CD) and a deep eutectic solvent (DES), namely choline chloride-ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG). Under this framework, the optimization and modeling of the separation conditions in a binary system were performed with the objective of maximizing resolution and minimizing analysis time. This was achieved through the application of response surface methodology. In particular, the effect of chiral selector concentration and percentage of DES on resolution and analysis time were investigated and optimized using a complete experimental design. The optimum enantioseparation conditions were determined to be 13.84 mM CM-β-CD and 0.15% v/v ChCl-EG for fluorine-substituted amphetamine derivatives and 14.36 mM and 0.75% v/v ChCl-EG for fluorine-substituted cathinone derivatives, respectively. This combination resulted in a baseline separation for eight out of the nine analytes studied. Overall, the results demonstrated the synergistic effect of the CM-β-CD/DES dual system and highlighted the significance of DESs as additives in capillary electrophoresis.

Abstract
In this study, N-doped fluorescent carbon dots with aggregation enhanced emission (N-CDs) were synthesized by a simple and rapid microwave-assisted method using o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and urea as raw materials and water as solvent. The fluorescence quantum yield of N-CDs was 20.64 %. N-CDs can be applied as invisible inks for message encryption. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity of N-CDs can be quenched by Fe3+ and enhanced by tetracycline (TC). Therefore, two fluorescent probes were simultaneously designed in this study. Namely, "turn-off" fluorescence probe for Fe3+ and "turn-on" fluorescence probe for TC. The linear detection range of Fe3+ is from 1 to 70 μM, and detection limit is 0.1011 μM; the linear detection range of TC is from 0.1 to 10 μM, and the detection limit can be as low as 0.0555 μM. In this paper, the mutual interference between Fe3+ and TC was investigated for the first time. The detection of Fe3+ and TC was made more accurate by optimizing pH conditions and adding masking agent.

Abstract
The effect of the combined use of amino acid-based ionic liquids (AAILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with either cyclodextrin- (CD) or cyclofructan- (CF) based chiral selectors for the chiral separation of amphetamine derivatives was investigated in the present study. A non-significant improvement in enantiomeric separation of target analytes was observed when AAILs were combined with either CF or CD. On the other side, a markedly improved chiral separation of enantiomers was obtained using the dual carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin/DES system, highlighting the existence of a synergistic effect. After the addition of 0.5% v/v of choline chloride-ethylene glycol, the resolution of the enantiomers of amphetamine, methamphetamine and 3-fluorethamphetamine, increased from 1.4, 1.1, 1.0 to 1.8, 1.8, and 1.5 min, and the analysis times increased from 19.54, 20.48, 18.71 to 35.71, 35.78 and 32.90 min, respectively. This was not the case for the CF/DES dual system, in which the separation of amphetamines worsened, indicating an antagonistic effect. In conclusion, DESs are a very promising additive in capillary electrophoresis that can improve the separation of chiral molecules in combination with CDs but not CFs.

Abstract
Tetracyclines are well-known antibiotics and widely used against a variety of bacterial infections. Their monitoring and detection have been an important issue. To this end, a vast number of methods have been developed; fluorescence sensing is one of the most reported. However, most of the reported sensors are made from transition metals with sophisticated multiprocesses; polymers are hardly seen for this purpose, particularly biocompatible ones. Herein, an aqueous solution of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), well known for being biocompatible, is shown to emit under excitation of 280 nm, while the solutions of selected tetracyclines, namely, doxycycline (DOX) and tetracycline (TC), are non-emissive under the same conditions. In the binary solutions of PEG-DOX or PEG-TC, PEG emission is sharply quenched with high sensitivity and selectivity. PEG was then used as a sensor for DOX and TC detections in water with high performance compared to reported studies. The same tests were also done by DOX spiking in milk and tap water, demonstrating that DOX was practically fully recovered. The quenching mechanism was ascribed to the interaction between the O atoms of PEG in clusters and specific heteroatom groups on tetracycline molecules through hydrogen bonding, elucidated from FTIR and NMR analyses. Therefore, this work provides a novel, fully green, easy to operate, low cost, and reliable protocol for tetracycline monitoring and detection and opens new potential application for PEG.

Abstract
A convenient fluorescence sensor of tetracycline (TC) was constructed based on carbon dots (CDs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel film. The immobilization of CDs in PVA carrier can stabilize the fluorescence of CDs by inhibiting the fluorescence quench due to the aggregation of CDs with time. CDs were prepared by a hydrothermal method. CDs showed bright blue fluorescence with the quantum yield of 0.35. The fluorescence of CDs was quenched by TC owing to the inner filter effect. The linear range for TC detection was 0-350 µM and the limit of detection was 0.17 µM. To test conveniently, PVA film was employed to upload CDs. Therefore, a novel sensor for TC was constructed in a visual mode. By comparison with the most of previous works, the present method displayed higher sensitivity and better selectivity. The results suggest that the present sensor has potential applications in the real-time detection of TC in food analysis.

Abstract
We developed a new hybrid material resulting from an innovative supramolecular tripartite association between an ionic liquid covalently immobilized on primary β-cyclodextrins rim and an anionic water-soluble polymer. Two hydrophilic ternary complexes based on native and permethylated β-cyclodextrins substituted with an ionic liquid and immobilized on poly(styrene sulfonate) (CD-IL+PSS- and CD(OMe)IL+PSS-) were obtained by simple dialysis with a cyclodextrin maximal grafting rate of 25% and 20% on the polymer, respectively. These polyelectrolytes are based on electrostatic interactions between the opposite charges of the imidazolium cation of the ionic liquid and the poly(styrene sulfonate) anion. The inclusion properties of the free cavities of the cyclodextrins and the synergic effect of the polymeric matrix were studied with three reference guests such as phenolphthalein, p-nitrophenol, and 2-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonic acid using UV-visible, fluorescent, and NMR spectroscopies. The support has been applied successfully in dialysis device to extract and concentrated aromatic model molecule. This simple and flexible synthetic strategy opens the way to new hybrid materials useful for fast and low-cost ecofriendly extraction techniques relevant for green analytical chemistry.

Abstract
Fluorine-doped graphene quantum dots have unique chemical bonds and charge distribution, which can bring unexpected properties compared to other common atom-doped graphene quantum dots. In the present work, fluorine and nitrogen co-doped graphene quantum dots (F, N-GQDs) are synthesized from levofloxacin via a simple hydrothermal method. Systematic studies demonstrate that F, N-GQDs can emit various fluorescence with the wavelength ranging from blue to green by dispersing F, N-GQDs into different solvents. Moreover, multi-color fluorescence is available by simply changing the concentration of F, N-GQDs. In addition to these unique characteristics, F, N-GQDs also exhibit a sensitive fluorescence response to tetracycline with an ultralow detection limit of 77 nM in water. Because of high photostability and high quantum yield, the F, N-GQDs are exploited as a unique invisible ink, which is printable and writable on paper. Meanwhile, based on the solvatochromism of F, N-GQDs, we realized the color adjustable fluorescent ink. Finally, large-area flexible multi-color fluorescent films are realized. Our synthesized F, N-GQDs, with tunable fluorescence in wavelength and intensity, have numerous opportunities for optical molecular sensors, information security, flexible optics, and others.

Abstract
Nowadays, ionic liquids (ILs) functionalized cyclodextrins (CDs) have drawn increasing attention in chiral separation. Herein, a novel β-CD derivative functionalized by L-histidinium IL, mono-6-deoxy-6-L-histidinium-β-cyclodextrin chloride (L-HMCDCl), was synthesized for the first time and utilized for enantioseparation of nefopam and chlorphenamine in capillary electrophoresis. The L-HMCDCl exhibited superior enantioselectivity compared with native β-CD. The effect of some key parameters such as chiral selector concentration, buffer pH and applied voltage on the enantioseparation was investigated in detail. In the interest of the chiral discrimination mechanism and the enhanced enantioselectivity of L-HMCDCl, molecular modeling with AutoDock was employed to study the interaction, which was in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract
There is an interest in the application of ionic liquids as additives into the separation media to improve achiral and chiral separations in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). This review will critically discuss the developments on the use of ionic liquids in the different modes of EKC during the last five years (2015-mid 2020). A healthy number of 48 research articles searched through Scopus were categorised into two: ionic liquids as sole pseudophase (micelles, microemulsions, ligand exchange pseudophase or molecular pseudophase) and ionic liquids with pseudophase (achiral or chiral). More than half of the papers dealt with chiral separations that were mostly facilitated by another additive or pseudophase. The role of ionic liquids for improvement of separations were analysed, and we provided some recommendations for further investigations. Finally, the use of ionic liquids in different on-line sample concentration or stacking methods (i.e., field enhancement and sweeping) was briefly discussed.

Abstract
A label-free fluorescence aptasensor was developed for the rapid detection of tetracycline (TET) based on G-quadruplex structure of TET aptamers and G-quadruplex specific dye Thioflavin T (ThT). The fluorescence of free ThT is essentially weak in aqueous solution, whereas it selectively identifies the G-quadruplex of aptamers to form the G-quadruplex/ThT conjugates, resulting in an enormous increase of the fluorescence intensity. However, the fluorescence intensity of G-quadruplex/ThT conjugates was drastically suppressed due to the release of free ThT from G-quadruplex/ThT conjugates after the addition of TET via specific binding with TET aptamers. The key factors affecting sensitivity and selectivity including the reaction medium, binding time of ThT to TET aptamers, incubation time between TET aptamers and TET, concentration of ThT and TET aptamers were investigated in detail. The optimal conditions were as follows: ultrapure water as reaction medium, binding time of 5 min, incubation time of 1 min, 9.0 μmol/L ThT and 0.03 μmol/L aptamers. A good linear relationship (correlation coefficient of 0.9973) was obtained between the fluorescence quenching efficiency (F0 - F) / F0 and the logarithm of TET concentration in the range of 0.01-1.0 μmol/L. The limit of detection was 0.001 μmol/L (S/N = 3). The proposed assay was applied for the detection of TET in the spiked honey and milk samples with recoveries ranging from 93.5% to 106.9%. The developed label-free fluorescence aptasensor showed advantages of high specificity, low cost and short time-consuming, illustrating potential application for on-site detection of TET in foodstuffs.

Single isomer cyclodextrins as chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis. J Chromatogr A 2020; 1627:461375. Abstract
Since decades, cyclodextrins are one of the most powerful selectors in chiral capillary electrophoresis for the enantioseparation of diverse organic compounds. This review concerns papers published over the last decade (from 2009 until nowadays), dealing with the capillary electrophoretic application of single isomer cyclodextrin derivatives in chiral separations. Following a brief overview of their synthetic approaches, the inventory of the neutral, negatively and positively charged (including both permanently ionic and pH-tunable ionizable substituents) and zwitterionic CD derivatives is presented, with insights to underlying structural aspects by NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling. CE represents an ideal tool to study the weak, non-covalent supramolecular interactions. The published methods are reviewed in the light of enantioselectivity, enantiomer migration order and the fine-tuning of enantiodiscrimination by the substitution pattern of the single entity selector molecules, which is hardly possible for their randomly substituted counterparts. All the reviewed publications herein support that cyclodextrin-based chiral capillary electrophoresis seems to remain a popular choice in pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are natural, nontoxic, and biodegradable macrocyclic oligosaccharides. As supramolecular hosts, CDs have numerous applications in many aspects. However, nonsubstituted CDs have the disadvantages of solubility, unspecific recognition sites, and weak interactions with guest molecules. Therefore, new CD-based derivatives are successfully designed, synthesized, and widely used in various fields. This contribution outlines the research progress in CD derivatives. In particular, this review emphasizes the synthesis and application of CDs modified through functionalization in definite positions, random substitution, and reconstruction of the skeleton. At the end of this review, a summary and future directions are presented.

Abstract
To develop the semiconductor of ZnO nanomaterials as the fluorescence sensor without leakage toxicity. Here, a molecularly imprinted polymer captivity ZnO nanorods (NRs) (MIPs-captivity ZnO NRs) was fabricated by precipitation polymerization. Such traditional technology was not only achieved the specific recognition for direct fluorescent quantification of the target tetracycline (TC) through fluorescence quenching, but also formed the shield to reduce the toxic effects of ZnO towards organisms. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the MIPs-captivity ZnO NRs were effectively applied to the direct fluorescence quantification of TC with excellent stability. Moreover, the practical analytical performance of the MIPs-captivity ZnO NRs was assayed by appraising the detection effects of TC in water sample from the Yangtze River with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Recent years have seen the increased utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) in the development and optimization of analytical methods. Their unique and eco-friendly properties and the ability to modify their structure allows them to be useful both at the sample preparation stage and at the separation stage of the analytes. The use of ILs for the analysis of pharmaceuticals seems particularly interesting because of their systematic delivery to the environment. Nowadays, they are commonly detected in many countries at very low concentration levels. However, due to their specific physiological activity, pharmaceuticals are responsible for bioaccumulation and toxic effects in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as possibly upsetting the body's equilibrium, leading to the dangerous phenomenon of drug resistance. This review will provide a comprehensive summary of the use of ILs in various sample preparation procedures and separation methods for the determination of pharmaceuticals in environmental and biological matrices based on liquid-based chromatography (LC, SFC, TLC), gas chromatography (GC) and electromigration techniques (e.g., capillary electrophoresis (CE)). Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of ILs, which can appear during extraction and separation, will be presented and attention will be given to the criteria to be followed during the selection of ILs for specific applications.

Abstract
In the last years, the European Commission has adopted restrictive directives on food quality and safety in order to protect animal and human health. Veterinary drugs represent an important risk and the need to have sensitive and fast analytical techniques to detect and quantify them has become mandatory. Over the years, the availability of different modes, interfaces, and formats has improved the versatility, sensitivity, and speed of capillary electrophoresis (CE) techniques. Thus, CE represents a powerful tool for the analysis of a large variety of food matrices and food-related molecules with important applications in food quality and safety. This review focuses the attention of CE applications over the last decade on the detection of different classes of drugs (used as additives in animal food or present as contaminants in food products) with a potential risk for animal and human health. In addition, considering that the different sample preparation procedures have strongly contributed to CE sensitivity and versatility, the most advanced sample pre-concentration techniques are discussed here.

Abstract
Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has emerged as an attractive technique for qualitative and quantitative detection. Analysis of these chemicals in the THz range under various temperatures can yield detailed information on molecular vibrational modes, which is of utmost importance for effective detection. Here we report the use of THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to measure tetracyclines hydrochloride (TCH) and its degradation products including epitetracycline hydrochloride (ETCH), anhydrotetracycline hydrochloride (ATCH), and epianhydrotetracycline hydrochloride (EATCH) over the temperature range of 4.5-300 K for the first time. The results showed that these four tetracyclines exhibited numerous distinct spectral features in frequency-dependent absorption spectra, which demonstrated the qualitative capacity of THz-TDS. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and analysis of temperature-dependent absorption spectra, the origin of the observed terahertz absorption peaks of these four tetracyclines were well interpreted. This study could lay the foundation for high-performance analysis of biological and chemical molecules by THz spectroscopy, which is essential for sensing application.

Abstract
Tetracycline (TC) is widely used to treat bacterial infections in humans and animals due to its low price and good antibacterial properties. The abuse of tetracycline has led to TC residues in daily food that could seriously affect human health. Thus, it is imperative to develop highly sensitive and selective methods for TC detection. In this work, we developed a colorimetric method for TC detection based on an enzyme-linked aptamer assay (ELAA) with multivalent HRP-mimicking DNAzyme. An aptamer was used as an alternative recognition element in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Multivalent HRP-mimicking DNAzyme, assembled via hybridization chain reactions (HCR), was used for catalytic substrate color rendering in ELAA. The multivalent HRP-mimicking DNAzyme exhibited enhanced catalytic capacity and improved the detection sensitivity greatly. The limit of detection was 8.1 × 10-2 ng mL-1 with a linear range from 1.0 × 10-2 ng mL-1 to 1.0 × 104 ng mL-1 toward TC in buffer. To challenge the practical application capability of this strategy, the detection of TC in milk samples was also investigated and showed similar linear relationships. Due to the introduction of an aptamer, this ELAA strategy shows high selectivity towards TC and has potential for the detection of a wide spectrum of analytes.

Chiral Selectors in Capillary Electrophoresis: Trends During 2017⁻2018. Molecules 2019; 24:molecules24061135. Abstract
Chiral separation is an important process in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. From the analytical chemistry perspective, chiral separation is required for assessing the fit-for-purpose and the safety of chemical products. Capillary electrophoresis, in the electrokinetic chromatography mode is an established analytical technique for chiral separations. A water-soluble chiral selector is typically used. This review therefore examines the use of various chiral selectors in electrokinetic chromatography during 2017–2018. The chiral selectors were both low and high (macromolecules) molecular mass molecules as well as molecular aggregates (supramolecules). There were 58 papers found by search in Scopus, indicating continuous and active activity in this research area. The macromolecules were sugar-, amino acid-, and nucleic acid-based polymers. The supramolecules were bile salt micelles. The low molecular mass selectors were mainly ionic liquids and complexes with a central ion. A majority of the papers were on the use or preparation of sugar-based macromolecules, e.g., native or derivatised cyclodextrins. Studies to explain chiral recognition of macromolecular and supramolecular chiral selectors were mainly done by molecular modelling and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Demonstrations were predominantly on drug analysis for the separation of racemates.

Abstract
Solid-phase extraction in combination with large-volume sample stacking-capillary electrophoresis (SPE-LVSS-CE) was applied to measure chlortetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, and tetracycline in milk samples. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method had a linear range of 29 to 200 µg·L-1, with limits of detection ranging from 18.6 to 23.8 µg·L-1 with inter- and intraday repeatabilities < 10% (as a relative standard deviation) in all cases. The enrichment factors obtained were from 50.33 to 70.85 for all the TCs compared with a conventional capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). This method is adequate to analyze tetracyclines below the most restrictive established maximum residue limits. The proposed method was employed in the analysis of 15 milk samples from different brands. Two of the tested samples were positive for the presence of oxytetracycline with concentrations of 95 and 126 µg·L-1. SPE-LVSS-CE is a robust, easy, and efficient strategy for online preconcentration of tetracycline residues in complex matrices.

Abstract
Natural, synthetic or semisynthetic antibiotics are highly used to prevent or treat diseases in humans and animals, and to promote animal growth. This fact makes that antibiotics residues or their transformation products may be present in food or in the environment after human or animal excretion. For this reason, it is imperative to develop reliable and sensitive analytical methodologies for their analysis. The main aim of this work is to present and discuss the most recent applications of capillary electromigration methods for the analysis of antibiotics, including the developments and applications of their use as chiral selectors in CE. The literature published from June 2015 to June 2017 is included following the previous review by Domínguez-Vega et al. (Electrophoresis, 2016, 37, 189-211). Information about the use of different detection systems, off-line and on-line strategies to improve sensitivity, and microchip devices for the analysis of antibiotics is provided and properly discussed.
