Abstract
Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) can replace classical thermosets, as their unique dynamic covalent bonds enable recyclable crosslinked polymers. Their creep susceptibility, however, hampers their application. Herein, an efficient strategy to enhance creep resistance of CANs via metal coordination to dynamic covalent imines is demonstrated. Crucially, the coordination bonds not only form additional crosslinks, but also affect the imine exchange. This dual effect results in enhanced glass transition temperature (Tg ), elasticmodulus (G') and creep resistance. The robustness of metal coordination is demonstrated by varying metal ion, counter anion, and coordinating imine ligand. All variations in metal or anion significantly enhance the material properties. The Tg and G' of the CANs are correlated to the coordination bond strength, offering a tunable handle by which choice of metal can steer material properties. Additionally, large differences in Tg and G' are observed for materials with different anions, which are mostly linked to the anion size. This serves as a reminder that for coordination chemistry in the bulk, not only the metal ion is to be considered, but also the accompanying anion. Finally, the reinforcing effect of metal coordination is proved insensitive to the metal-ligand ratio, emphasizing the robustness of the applied method.

Abstract
Metallo-supramolecular polymers (MSPs) show unique electrochemical and optical properties, that are different to organic polymers, caused by electronic interactions between metals and ligands. For the development of quad-color electrochromic materials, here we report the stepwise introduction of three different transition metal ions into an MSP, utilizing the different complexation abilities of the transition metals. An MSP with Os(II), Ru(II), and Fe(II) (polyOsRuFe) was synthesized via a stepwise synthetic route through the formation of an Os(II) complex first, followed by the introduction of Ru(II) to the Os(II) complex, and finally the attachment of Fe(II) to the Os(II)-Ru(II) complex to produce the polymer. This synthetic procedure was extended to fabricate MSPs that comprised Co(II)/Ru(II)/Os(II) and Zn(II)/Ru(II)/Os(II). The synthesized MSPs showed a broad optical and electrochemical window due to the coupling of three heterometallic segments into the polymer. Introducing acetate anion as the counter anion greatly enhanced the solubility of polyOsRuFe in methanol. A thin film of polyOsRuFe was prepared on ITO/glass by spin-coating the methanol solution, and its reversible quad-color electrochromism was demonstrated.

Abstract
RATIONALE Coordinatively driven self-assembly of transition metal ions and bidentate ligands gives rise to organometallic complexes that usually contain superimposed isobars, isomers, and conformers. In this study, the double dispersion ability of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) was used to provide a comprehensive structural characterization of the self-assembled supramolecular complexes by their mass and charge, revealed by the MS event, and their shape and collision cross-section (Ω), revealed by the IM event. METHODS Self-assembled complexes were synthesized by reacting a bis(terpyridine) ligand exhibiting a 60o dihedral angle between the two ligating terpyridine sites (T) with divalent Zn, Ni, Cd, or Fe. The products were isolated as (Metal2+ [T])n (PF6 )2n salts and analyzed using IM-MS after electrospray ionization (ESI) which produced several charge states from each n-mer, depending on the number of PF6 - anions lost upon ESI. Experimental Ω data, derived using IM-MS, and computational Ω predictions were used to elucidate the size and architecture of the complexes. RESULTS Only macrocyclic dimers, trimers, and tetramers were observed with Cd2+ , whereas Zn2+ formed the same plus hexameric complexes. These two metals led to the simplest product distributions and no linear isomers. In sharp contrast, Ni2+ and Fe2+ formed all possible ring sizes from dimer to hexamer as well as various linear isomers. The experimental and theoretical Ω data indicated rather planar macrocyclic geometries for the dimers and trimers, twisted 3D architectures for the larger rings, and substantially larger sizes with spiral conformation for the linear congeners. Adding PF6 - to the same complex was found to mainly cause size contraction due to new stabilizing anion-cation interactions. CONCLUSIONS Complete structural identification could be accomplished using ESI-IM-MS. Our results affirm that self-assembly with Cd2+ and Zn2+ proceeds through reversible equilibria that generate the thermodynamically most stable structures, encompassing exclusively macrocyclic architectures that readily accommodate the 60o ligand used. In contrast, complexation with Ni2+ and Fe2+ , which form stronger coordinative bonds, proceeds through kinetic control, leading to more complex mixtures and kinetically trapped less stable architectures, such as macrocyclic pentamers and linear isomers.

Abstract
In coordination-driven self-assembly, 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) has gained extensive attention in constructing supramolecular architectures on the basis of ⟨tpy-M-tpy⟩ connectivity. In direct self-assembly of large discrete structures, however, the metal ions were mainly limited to Cd(II), Zn(II), and Fe(II) ions. Herein, we significantly broaden the spectrum of metal ions with seven divalent transition metal ions M(II) (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd) to assemble a series of supramolecular fractals. In particular, Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) were reported for the first time to form such large and discrete structures with ⟨tpy-M-tpy⟩ connectivity. In addition, the structural stabilities of those supramolecules in the gas phase and the kinetics of the ligand exchange process in solution were investigated using mass spectrometry. Such a fundamental study gave the relative order of structural stability in the gas phase and revealed the inertness of coordination in solution depending on the metal ions. Those results would guide the future study in tpy-based supramolecular chemistry in terms of self-assembly, characterization, property, and application.

Abstract
The syntheses of 4'-substituted chiral 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands with predetermined configurations and directionalities are rather limited in the supramolecular chemistry field. In this study, a carbazole-linked ditopic chiral ligand L was synthesized using 4'-bromo-substituted pineno-fused tpy 5 as the precursor. Upon complexation with Cd(NO3)2·4H2O and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, two enantiomerically pure metallosupramolecules, [Cd3L3] and [Zn4L4], have been self-assembled and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, traveling wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry, and DOSY analysis. In addition, their optical properties are characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, suggesting an efficiency transmission and amplification of chirality from the ligand to metal center via self-assembly.

Abstract
Ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) allows the separation of isomeric and isobaric species on the basis of their size, shape, and charge. The fast separation timescale (ms) and high sensitivity of these measurements make IM-MS an ideally suitable method for monitoring changes in macromolecular structure, such as those occurring in interconverting terpyridine-based metallosupramolecular self-assemblies. IM-MS is used to verify the elemental composition (size) and architecture (shape) of the self-assembled products. Additionally, this article demonstrates its applicability to the elucidation of concentration-driven association-dissociation (fusion-fission) equilibria between isobaric structures. IM-MS enables both quantitative separation and identification of the interconverting complexes as well as derivation of the corresponding equilibrium constants (i.e., thermodynamic information) from extracted IM-MS abundance data.

Abstract
We present a simple and effective way of using metal and metal–ligand modifications to tune the electrochemical and optical properties of conducting polymers. To that end, a polyterthiophene functionalized with terpyridine moieties was synthesized and then the resulting film's surface or bulk was modified with different metal ions, namely Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ and terpyridine. The modification of the terpyridine functionalized polyterthiophene film by Fe2+ increased the absorptivity and electrochemical capacitance of the conducting polymer, and improved its conjugation. Further modification by Zn2+ and Cu2+ resulted in dramatically different spectroelectrochemical properties of the film. Moreover, the influence of the solvents (ACN and 1 : 1 ACN : H2O) in conjunction with the metal ion applied for the modification was found crucial for the electrochemical and optical properties of the films. We present a simple and effective way of using metal and metal–ligand modifications to tune the electrochemical and optical properties of conducting polymers.![]()

Abstract
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) was used to analyze a series of synthetic organic ions bearing fixed multiple charges. Despite the multiple intrinsic charges, only singly charged ions were recorded in each case. In addition to the pseudo-molecular ions formed by counterion adduction, deprotonation and electron capture, a number of fragment ions were also observed. Charge splitting by fragmentation was found to be a viable route for charge reduction leading to the formation of the observed singly charged fragment ions. Unlike multivalent metal ions, organic ions can rearrange and/or fragment during charge reduction. This fragmentation process will evidently complicate the interpretation of the MALDI MS spectrum. Because MALDI MS is usually considered as a soft ionization technique, the fragment ion peaks can easily be erroneously interpreted as impurities. Therefore, the awareness and understanding of the underlying MALDI-induced fragmentation pathways is essential for a proper interpretation of the corresponding mass spectra. Due to the fragment ions generated during charge reduction, special care should be taken in the MALDI MS analysis of multiply charged ions. In this work, the possible mechanisms by which the organic ions bearing fixed multiple charges fragment are investigated. With an improved understanding of the fragmentation mechanisms, MALDI TOF MS should still be a useful technique for the characterization of organic ions with fixed multiple charges.

Abstract
With the goal of increasing the complexity of metallo-supramolecules, two rhombus star-shaped supramolecular architectures, namely, supersnowflakes, were designed and assembled using multiple 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands in a stepwise manner. In the design of multicomponent self-assembly, ditopic and tritopic ligands were bridged through Ru(II) with strong coordination to form metal-organic ligands for the subsequent self-assembly with a hexatopic ligand and Zn(II). The combination of Ru(II)-organic ligands with high stability and Zn(II) ions with weak coordination played a key role in the self-assembly of giant heteroleptic supersnowflakes, which encompassed three types of tpy-based organic ligands and two metal ions. With such a stepwise strategy, the self-sorting of individual building blocks was prevented from forming the undesired assemblies, e.g., small macrocycles and coordination polymers. Furthermore, the intra- and intermolecular dynamic exchange study of two supersnowflakes by NMR and mass spectrometry revealed the remarkable stability of these giant supramolecular complexes.

Abstract
An electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been utilized to investigate the relative ligand-binding strengths in a series of heteroleptic-charged iridium(III) complexes of the general formula [(C^N)(2) Ir(III) (S-tpy)](PF(6) ) by using variable collision energies. Collision-induced dissociation experiments were performed in order to study the stability of the Ir(III) complexes that are, for instance, suitable phosphors in light-emitting electrochemical cells. The ratio of signal intensities belonging to the fragment and the undissociated complex depends on the collision energy applied for the tandem mass spectra (MS/MS) analysis. By defining the threshold collision energy and the point of complete complex dissociation, it is possible to estimate the relative complex stabilities depending on the nature of the coordinated ligands [i.e. type of cyclometalating ligand (C^N), substituents on the S-shaped terpyridine (S-tpy)]. The collision energy values differed as a function of the coordination sphere of the Ir(III) centers.

Abstract
New metallomacrocycles composed of 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands and Ru(II) or Fe(II) transition metal ions were prepared by stepwise directed assembly and characterized by 2D diffusion NMR spectroscopy (DOSY), electrospray ionization traveling wave ion mobility mass spectrometry (ESI TWIM MS), and molecular modeling. The supramolecular polymers synthesized include a homonuclear all-Ru hexamer as well as heteronuclear hexamer and nonamer with alternating Ru/Ru/Fe metal centers. ESI MS yields several charge states from each supramacromolecule. If ESI is interfaced with TWIM MS, overlapping charge states and the isomeric components of an individual charge state are separated based on their unique drift times through the TWIM region. From experimentally measured drift times, collision cross-sections can be deduced. The collision cross-sections obtained for the synthesized supramacromolecules are in good agreement with those predicted by molecular modeling for macrocyclic structures. Similarly, the hydrodynamic radii of the synthesized complexes derived from 2D DOSY NMR experiments agree excellently with the radii calculated for macrocyclic architectures, confirming the ESI TWIM MS finding. ESI TWIM MS and 2D DOSY NMR spectroscopy provide an alternative approach for the structural analysis of supramolecules that are difficult or impossible to crystallize, such as the large macrocyclic assemblies investigated. ESI TWIM MS will be particularly valuable for the characterization of supramolecular assemblies not available in the quantity or purity required for NMR studies.

Abstract
The transition metal (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Hg) complexes of 2- acetylbenzimidazolethiosemicarbazone (L(1)) and 1-methyl 2-acetylbenzimidazole-thiosemicarbazone (L(2)) are analyzed by MALDI using HCCA, THP, MMNPD and DMN as the matrices. All the MALDI spectra are clean without any contribution from the complex ions resulted by multiple proton addition/removal. All the complexes, except Cu, irrespective of the matrix used, show 1:2 complex ions wherein two ligands (neutral or deprotonated) complex with the metal ion depending on the nature and stable oxidation state of the central metal ion viz., [M + 2L - 2H](+) ion for Fe and Co complexes (+3 oxidation state) and [M + 2L - H](+) ion for Ni, Zn, Cd and Hg (+2 oxidation state). The Cu complex show 1:1 complex ion corresponding to [2M + 2L - 2H](+) ions. When HCCA is used as a matrix, the complex ions due to ligand exchange by matrix are also found, and this process is relatively more if a neutral ligand is bound to the metal ion in the original complex ion. The type of complex ions found under MALDI experiments are similar to those found under ESI experiments. However, the complex ions due to reduction of Cu are found only in the MALDI analysis of Cu complexes.

Abstract
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was applied to the analysis of Ru(OCOCF(3))(2)(CO)(PPh(3))(2), Ru(OCOC(3)F(7))(2)(CO)(PPh(3))(2), Ir(tBuppy)(3) and Ir(ppy)(2)(acac) complexes. A troublesome problem in the MALDI-TOFMS characterization of these metal complexes is the possible replacement of complex ligands by matrix. In this contribution, 10 matrices, ranging from acidic to basic, were investigated: alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), sinapinic acid (SA), dithranol, 2,4,6-trihydroxyactophenone (THAP), 6-azo-2-thiothymine (ATT), norharman, 2-[(2E)-3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2-methylprop-2-enylidene]malononitrile (DCTB), 4-nitroaniline (NA) and 2-amino-5-nitrophyridine (ANP). With most of the matrices, including the neutral and basic ones, matrix substitution of ligand could clearly be detected. Based on the experimental results, possible mechanisms of matrix substitution were discussed. It was demonstrated that the ligand exchange process might also occur through the gas-phase reactions initiated by laser shots. Among the matrices tested, DCTB was found to be the best one for the complexes that are prone to ligand exchange by matrix.
