Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigates the mediating effect of meaning in life between death anxiety and attitude toward palliative care among nursing students. METHODS We enrolled 363 undergraduate nursing students using a convenience sampling method as the respondents and conducted a survey using general information about nursing students, the Chinese version of the FATCOD-B Scale, the Chinese version of the Death Anxiety Scale, and the Chinese version of the Meaning in Life Questionnaire. The SPSS25.0 statistical software was used to analyze the mediating effect. RESULTS The mean total attitude score toward palliative care was (104.72 ± 10.62). Death anxiety had a significant negative predictive effect on the attitude toward palliative care (β = -0.520, P < 0.01). When the mediating variable of the presence of meaning in life was included, the negative predictive effect of death anxiety on attitude toward palliative care remained significant (β = -0.379, P = 0.036); the mediating effect (-0.141) accounted for 27.12% of the total impact (-0.520). CONCLUSIONS The presence of meaning in life mediates the relationship between death anxiety and attitude toward palliative care. This implies that nursing educators, through their role in educating nursing students about the meaning of life, can significantly influence the development of a positive attitude toward palliative care.

Abstract
Studies reveal that nursing students rank hospice nursing among their least preferred career choices. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between nursing students' intention to work in hospice care in the future and their attitudes toward caring for dying patients, death anxiety, personal and/or professional experience of caring for dying patients, and type of nursing program studied. In this cross-sectional study, 200 nursing students completed an online survey based on the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale and the Turkish Death Anxiety Scale. Only 11% of the respondents were found to express interest in working in hospice care in the future. Studying in the accelerated program for nonnursing Bachelor of Arts graduates predicted a higher intention to work in hospice care in the future, than studying in the generic program (β = 0.27, P < .001). Completion of clinical experience in a medical ward predicted lower intention (β = -0.21, P < .01). These findings suggest that nursing students in the accelerated program for nonnursing Bachelor of Arts graduates should be provided with appropriate experience and support to maintain their interest in hospice nursing. Clinical experience in medical wards does not seem to be a good substitute for clinical experience in hospice care.

Abstract
Death anxiety may reduce the interaction between nurses and patients, causing nurses to focus more on the physical care needs of patients and ignore their psychosocial and spiritual needs. This study was conducted to examine nurses' death anxiety and attitudes toward caring for dying patients. The data were collected using an information form, the Thorson-Powell Death Anxiety Scale (TPDAS), and the Frommelt Attitudes Toward the Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD). The mean TPDAS and FATCOD scores were 46.71 (14.48) and 104.97 (13.55), respectively, and it was determined that they had moderate death anxiety and positive attitudes towards the care of dying patients. Those working in intensive care and internal medicine clinics had more positive attitudes toward caring for dying patients compared with those working in surgical clinics. Those who reported having a strong faith had lower death anxiety.

Abstract
Introduction: Death is a natural phenomenon inherent to the human condition and an inevitable consequence of life. As future professionals, nursing students should face the process of death and recognize their limitations, because emotional aspects can influence the quality of health care, especially in Spanish-speaking countries. This study aimed to quantify the level of fear of death among nursing students in a higher education institution in a region of Colombia. Methods: A quantitative correlational study including 258 university students selected by stratified sampling were administered the Collet-Lester Fear of Death Scale; the results were analyzed for the age, religion, marital status, number of children, and academic level of the respondents. Results: On average, the students were 22.9 years old; 83.3% of them were female, 75.6% were Catholic, 14.1% had at least one child, and 66.7% had experienced bereavement in the family. An association was found between the female gender and the fear of one's own death (p = .025). Conclusion: These findings differ from those reported in other Latin American countries where higher academic level and clinical experience are related to lower fear of death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care focuses on the ability of medical students to use their expanded experiences and knowledge; however, basic medical education does not provide adequate knowledge and skills regarding palliative and end-of-life care. This study designed to examine knowledge related to palliative care and attitudes toward dying people among medical students in Jordan. METHODS Cross-sectional, descriptive design was used in this study. A total of 404 medical students were recruited using convenience sampling techniques from six medical programs. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire in relation to knowledge and attitudes regarding palliative care and dying persons using Palliative Care Assessment Knowledge (PCAK) and Frommelt Attitudes toward Care of the Dying Scale Form B (FATCOD-B). RESULTS Medical students have a moderate level of knowledge related to palliative care in (PCAK) part1 subscale about; pain managing (n = 156, 38.6 %), managing other palliative care symptoms (n = 164, 40.6 %), and in witnesses' family counseling and breaking bad news discussion (n = 178, 44.1 %). However, medical students have inadequate knowledge concerning the palliative care in part-2of the scale. Furthermore, students have positive attitudes towards caring for dying patients with mean score of 108.76 (SD = 8.05). The highest ranked attitude subscales were; Fairs/Malaise (M = 29.03, SD = 4.28), Communication (M = 21.39, SD = 2.51) and Relationship (M = 18.31, SD = 1.55). There was a significant difference in attitudes in relation to gender (t = -5.14, p < 0.001) with higher female mean score (M = 109.97) than males (M = 105.47). Also significant difference found among those who are exposed to Palliative Care and those who are not (t = -6.33, p < 0.001) with higher mean score of those exposed to palliative acre courses (M=298) than those who did not (M=106). CONCLUSION Improving knowledge and attitudes of medical students regarding palliative and end of life care should be highlighted to medical educators and medical schools need to incorporate palliative and end-of-life care into medical curricula across all levels.

Abstract
Background Death education has been confirmed to be an effective method to enhance nursing students' attitudes and coping abilities toward death. However, integrated Narrative Pedagogy into the death education to explore educational effectiveness is still limited. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of a death education based on Narrative Pedagogy in a palliative care course on the attitude toward death, coping with death, and attitude toward caring for the dying among undergraduate nursing students in China. Methods The study was designed as a pre-post intervention study with a quasi-experimental design. All the participants received 6 class hours of death education which was designed in a palliative care course. The death education includes preparation, presentation, discussion, reflection, and practice of the narrative materials. Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), Coping with Death Scale (CDS), and Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying-Form B (FATCOD-Form B) were used to measure outcomes. Results Sixty undergraduate nursing students who consented. There were statistically significant increases in the mean score of neutral acceptance and approach acceptance in the DAP-R, CDS, and FATCOD-Form B before and after the intervention. Conclusion This death education integrated Narrative Pedagogy which indicated to improve attitude toward death, competence to cope with death, and attitude toward the care of dying patients. The findings assist teachers in understanding the importance and urgency of death education, as well as providing a favorable approach to death education. However, the long-term effectiveness still needs to study in further.

Abstract
AIM The study described the perception and attitude of Saudi male nursing students towards death and dying. METHODS This qualitative study recruited Twelve male Saudi nursing students from Nursing Department at University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Data collection was conducted using unstructured one-on-one online interviews from January to February 2021 using thematic approach to analyse the data. RESULTS The result of the study presented three themes. The first theme describes the Muslim Saudi male nursing student's religious beliefs and practices in terms of three concepts. The second theme is the emotional reaction of the participants. The third theme is bereavement healing rituals. CONCLUSION The knowledge on how nursing students with an Islamic belief view the concept of death and dying provides valuable and critical information on developing educational intervention as well as course and training contents that needs to be included in developing the competencies of these students.

Abstract
Spirituality is defined as the meaning of life, being the very essence of life made up of all of the aspects inherent to it. During end-of-life processes, this need is shown to be particularly altered in patients and yet it is an aspect that the health professionals accompanying patients in this situation report being least equipped to address, alongside therapies that could help to meet these needs, such as art therapy. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted, adheres to the guidelines of COREQ (41). The study population were final year students undertaking a nursing degree at the University of Huelva, Spain. The sample was selected via intentional sampling using snowball recruitment from the study population. Stratification according to gender was performed due to the feminised nature of the population. Sample size was determined progressively during the research, with recruitment ceasing at 13 informants once information saturation was achieved. Inclusion criteria required that participants were to be final year students enrolled on a nursing degree who had provided consent to participate voluntarily in the research. The analysis Realized was interpretive phenomenological (IPA) as described by Smith (43-45). The present study revealed that students perceive their training on spiritual care to be deficient. Despite them reporting that they possess the skills and tools to provide end-of-life care, this is not enough to provide effective accompaniment, given that this moment brings them into touch with their own insecurities. Students verbalized the need to learn strategies to address this shortcoming regarding final accompaniment, for instance, through art, with creativity being one of the skills with the potential to uncover the meaning of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Health Organisation and palliative care stakeholders recommend that healthcare workers are educated in palliative care. Provision of high-quality palliative care is fundamental to nursing practice. However, caring for palliative care patients and meeting family needs is challenging without appropriate knowledge and experience. Palliative care education and clinical skill development for undergraduate student nurses is a priority to ensure graduate nurses are equipped with the knowledge and skill to deliver safe and competent care. METHODS A scoping review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework was used to identify undergraduate student nurses' palliative care education and preparation. A comprehensive literature search of five electronic databases and grey literature were conducted from January 2002 to December 2021. The aim was to review the empirical evidence and ascertain how undergraduate student nurses' palliative care education is organised, facilitated, delivered and evaluated. Screening was performed independently by two reviewers against eligibility criteria with meetings to discuss included papers and form a consensus. Data was extracted and related to palliative care undergraduate student nurses' education, educational model, methodology, key findings, and recommendations. Analysed and summarised data was mapped onto the four key review questions (educational models utilised, methods used to assess effectiveness, facilitators/barriers and gaps in the literature). RESULTS 34 papers met the criteria for this review. The review highlights that undergraduate nursing palliative care education is more evident in high income countries. Limited and diverse published research existing in low- and middle-income countries. Educational models utilised were theoretical and experiential learning and educational process, early integration and multiple learning methods which were highlighted as facilitating factors. However, crowded curricula, lack of palliative care clinical placement expertise, difficulty providing clinical placement, timing and delivery of palliative care and difficulty responding to simulated environments (manikins) were perceived barriers. Nevertheless, palliative care education can increase knowledge, positive attitude, self-confidence and adequate preparation of undergraduate student nurses. CONCLUSION This review highlights that there is limited research regarding the timing and delivery of palliative care principles and practice in undergraduate student nurse education. Early integration of palliative care education impacts upon students perceived preparedness for practice and positively influences their attitudes to palliative care provision.

Abstract
Lack of knowledge about palliative care is one of the most common reasons for hindering the delivery of high-quality palliative care. Nurses play a major role in providing palliative care, and the degree of their mastery of this knowledge is crucial to whether they can effectively deliver the ideal palliative care. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the level of palliative care knowledge in this population. As of 8 November 8, 2022, we performed systematic searches in 10 databases. Meta-analysis of quantitative data that measuring the level of palliative care knowledge of nurses using the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN) was conducted using Stata software (version: V.15). A pooled mean score <10 indicated a low/insufficient knowledge level. The funnel plot and Egger's regression test were used to detect publication bias, and finally, the robustness of the results was evaluated through sensitivity analysis. The pooled mean score for the level of nurses' knowledge of palliative care was 9.68 (95% CI: 9.40 to 9.96). Among the three dimensions of the PCQN scale, the pooled mean score for the '"Philosophy and Principles of Palliative Care'" section was 1.73 (95% CI: 1.38 to 2.08); the '"Pain and Other Symptom Control'" section was 6.73 (95% CI: 6.41 to 7.05); and the '"Psychological, Spiritual and Social Care'" section was 1.21 (95% CI: 0.72 to 1.69). It can be seen that nurses' mastery of palliative care knowledge is not sufficient. It is recommended that relevant departments formulate and promote the implementation of targeted measures to improve the knowledge level of this population.

Abstract
Palliative care (PC) is a vital part of the responses needed to address the outcomes of cancer and other non-communicable diseases such as chronic pain, terminal illnesses, and end-of-life situations. Until today, there is a significant lack of access to PC in most developing countries, where the majority of the global population lives. Deficiencies in nurses' knowledge and attitudes exacerbate the lack of access to PC and end-of-life care (EOLC) in these countries. This study was conducted in Oman to assess undergraduate nursing students' (NS) PC knowledge and attitudes towards EOLC. A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 276 NS in all undergraduate programs in Oman. The PC knowledge and attitude towards EOLC were measured using the PEACE-Q and FATCOD-B. The NS had a borderline level of PC knowledge but favorable attitudes towards EOLC. The NS were least knowledgeable about the philosophy of PC, delirium, side effects of opioids, cancer pain, and dyspnea. There were differences in PC knowledge and attitudes across programs. The findings highlight potential deficiencies and opportunities that can be utilized to augment future nursing human resources for PC and EOLC in Oman. We recommend a national interdisciplinary PC education and training consortium (NIPCET-C) to dialogue, develop, promote, monitor, and evaluate PC and EOLC education in Oman.

Abstract
Background China is entering an era of aging population with an increased mortality rate among this category of population. Health professional students' attitudes toward death directly affect their quality of palliative care in their future careers. It is thus important to understand their death attitudes and associated factors to guide future educational and training development. Objectives This study aimed to investigate death attitudes and analyze the associated factors among health professional students in China. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 1,044 health professional students were recruited from 14 medical colleges and universities. The Chinese version of the Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R) was used to evaluate their death attitudes. A multiple linear regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of attitudes toward death. Results Health professional students tended to accept death more neutrally. Multivariate analysis showed that their negative death attitudes were associated with age (β = -0.31, p < 0.001) and religious belief (β = 2.76, p = 0.015), while positive death attitudes were associated with age (β = -0.42, p < 0.001), hearing of Advance Care Plan (ACP) (β = 2.21, p = 0.001), and attending funeral/memorial services (β = 2.69, p = 0.016). Conclusion Our study stresses the importance of including death and palliative care education in healthcare courses among health professional students in China. Incorporation of ACP education along with experiences of funeral/memorial services may help promote health professional students' positive attitudes toward death and improve the quality of palliative care in their future careers.

Abstract
Palliative care is a method of preventing and alleviating suffering for patients who have been diagnosed with terminal diseases by early detection, accurate assessments, and pain and symptom management. Patients and their families can then mitigate related physical, psychological, and spiritual challenges and thus will have a better quality of life. This article reports a study that evaluated undergraduate nursing students' knowledge of and attitude and self-efficacy toward palliative and end-of-life care in Palestine. A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used among a convenience sample of 449 undergraduate nursing students at the end of their second, third, and fourth years. The results of this research revealed that nursing students had low levels of knowledge about palliative care and low self-efficacy toward end-of-life care. The majority of students reported a positive disposition toward the provision of end-of-life care. The most important predictors of knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy were age, having attended a seminar/lecture on the issue, experiencing death while providing care, and having experienced a death in the family or close friends. Furthermore, elevated levels of knowledge were significantly associated with higher level of attitude (P < .001) about palliative care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helping patients and families to relieve severe pain and manage grief are issues that palliative care is designed to address, but integrating these topics in nursing education and practice requires increased attention. It is necessary to understand the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students to develop a targeted approach toward integrating palliative care in practice settings. OBJECTIVES To investigate attitudes and knowledge toward palliative care among undergraduate nursing students in China and to explore correlations and associated factors. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTINGS Seven comprehensive universities in China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 582 undergraduate nursing students participated. METHODS Online questionnaires were available from December 2020 to February 2021. The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale and the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing were used to measure students' attitude and knowledge of palliative care. Descriptive and correlational methods were used to analyse the associated factors and their correlation with knowledge and attitudes. RESULTS Attitude scores showed significant differences in gender, education level, religious preference, previous education in palliative care, experience in caring for dying patients and previous experience with bereavement. Knowledge of palliative care was influenced by gender, religious preference, prior education in palliative care, experience in caring for dying patients, and previous experience with bereavement. A positive correlation exists between knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care among undergraduate nursing students. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the need to offer palliative care courses in nursing education and practice settings in Chinese health care settings. Nurse educators need to integrate the concept of palliative care into the curriculum of nursing education programs. Healthcare administrators and nurse leaders should promote investment and training in the education of nurses in practice settings to deliver high-quality palliative care services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical and nursing students will play an essential role in delivering palliative care in the future. Death education is important in preparing them for future palliative care, however, little is known about students education needs and how death attitudes affect such needs in Mainland China. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this survey was to investigate the death education needs of medical and nursing students and to evaluate the impact of death attitudes on death education needs. DESIGN Multi-center, cross-sectional survey. SETTINGS Fourteen medical and nursing colleges & universities in Hunan, Sichuan, Liaoning, Guangdong, Shandong, and Shanxi provinces in China. PARTICIPANTS The sample included 1044 medical and nursing students from six provinces. METHODS In this multi-center cross-sectional study, all data were collected through an online questionnaire that included demographic information and questions on death-related experiences. In addition, the Death Attitude Profile-Revised and the Death Education Needs Scale were used to evaluate students' death attitudes and death education needs , respectively. RESULTS The students had a mean death education needs score of 38.85 ± 7.25 (range: 10-50), yet only 20.9 % of them had received palliative care-related training. Being female (B:3.869, 95 % CI:2.849-4.889), fear of death (B:0.119, 95 % CI:0.005-0.232), and neutral acceptance (B:0.787, 95 % CI:0.638-0.936) were associated with higher death education needs, while death avoidance (B: -0.226, 95 % CI: -0.368 ~ -0.083), approach acceptance (B: -0.126, 95 % CI: -0.215 ~ -0.036), and escape acceptance (B: -0.198, 95 % CI: -0.322 ~ -0.073) were associated with lower death education needs. CONCLUSIONS The high level of death education needs and low training rate in palliative care among medical and nursing students in mainland China indicates a gap that needs to be addressed. Students' death education needs were affected by gender and death attitudes, which provides implications for the future development of palliative care training models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the aging of the population and the increasing trend of chronic illnesses, the demand for palliative care is growing. Undergraduate nursing students will be the main providers of palliative care in the future. Therefore, it's important to enhance their capability for palliative care. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to optimize palliative care education, based on undergraduate nursing students' perceptions and educational needs through the application of the importance-performance analysis and Borich needs assessment model. DESIGN A cross-sectional descriptive study. SETTING Nursing department in Wenzhou, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 448 full-time undergraduate nursing students were recruited for the study. METHODS Importance-performance analysis was used to identify items that obtain high priority for improvement, and the Borich needs assessment model and the Locus for focus model were used to prioritize educational needs. The three methods were integrated to determine the top-priority content to meet undergraduate nursing students' educational needs in palliative care. RESULTS The items located in Quadrant II of Importance-performance analysis, ranked in the first 10 in Borich needs assessment, and located in Quadrant I of the Locus for focus model were defined as top-priority content. These included: "respiratory symptoms: pleural effusion, superior vena cava syndrome, respiratory difficulty," "Care of terminal symptoms," "Awareness of dying," "Care of remains," "Cooperation between interdisciplinary teams," and "Rights and interests of dying patients." CONCLUSION Several years of development of palliative care education have made nursing students aware of its importance. However, they have reported that education remains insufficient. A greater focus on palliative care education is needed to ensure they are better prepared. Specific attention should be given to cooperation between interdisciplinary teams, dealing with death and dying, rights and interests of people who were dying.

Abstract
Objective Internationally, intern nursing students' experiences with dying patients and death are an area of great concern. However, barriers to providing end-of-life care for dying cancer patients have not been extensively investigated in mainland China, where death remains a taboo issue. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate intern nursing students' perceived barriers to their performance in providing end-of-life cancer care in the Chinese cultural context. Methods This was a descriptive, qualitative study. Twenty-one intern nursing students from three cancer centers in mainland China were interviewed between January 2021 and June 2022. A thematic analysis method was used to analyze the data. The theory of planned behavior was adopted to design the study and identify themes. Results A range of barriers related to attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control that hindered intern nursing students from acquiring abilities to deal with patient dying and death were identified in the Chinese cultural context. Conclusions Chinese intern nursing students encountered many barriers that affected their provision of end-of-life care to dying cancer patients. Strategies to improve their ability to provide appropriate end-of-life care should focus on helping them develop appropriate attitudes toward dying and death and how to overcome subjective norms and behavioral control barriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care is a service that focuses on quality of life and symptom management. It is particularly important for patients with chronic disease. Palliative care in general is an underutilized service for various reasons. Many nurses have only learned about palliative care from experience and express a need for more education. PURPOSE This study focused on educating critical care nurses on palliative care through online training videos. This quasi-experimental study aims to determine if an online palliative care educational program improves critical care nurses' self-efficacy in providing palliative care. PROCEDURES The study was conducted using a pre-survey and post-survey that was created with a validated tool called the Palliative Care Self-Efficacy Scale. In between the surveys, the respondents were directed to online education. MAIN FINDINGS The overall Palliative Care Self-Efficacy Scale showed a median score of the Palliative Care Self-Efficacy Scale increased from pre education (Md=38) to post-education (Md = 43.5), z = -4.868, p <.001, with a large effect size (r = -.76). PRINCIPAL CONCLUSIONS The majority of critical care nurses have received some form of palliative care education. Online resources similar to the VitalTalk videos and handouts provide added education and improve perceived self-efficacy in providing palliative care in both psychosocial and symptom management aspects of care. The data suggests that improvements to access to education can be done by employers. Further studies can be done to assess current access to palliative care education in undergraduate nursing programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses in intensive care units (ICUs) play a crucial role in providing palliative care. Effective provision of palliative care in the ICU requires nurses' active engagement, yet little is known about the confidence for palliative care that ICU nurses hold in China. AIM To explore confidence in performing palliative care among ICU nurses in China and factors related to nurses' level of confidence. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional design was implemented. METHODS This study utilized convenience sampling to recruit ICU nurses from nine hospitals in Wuhan, China. Data were collected via an online survey. Multiple regression was conducted to identify the predictors of the ICU nurses' confidence in performing palliative care. RESULTS A total of 231 ICU nurses participated in the study, resulting in a response rate of 78% (231/296). Participants reported a relatively low level of confidence for carrying out palliative care (mean score = 2.60 ± 0.53; range = 1-4). Nurses who had more positive attitudes toward palliative care communication (P < .001), higher levels of formal training on palliative care (P < .001), more years of working as an ICU nurse (P < .05) and those working in integrated ICU (P < .001) showed a higher level of confidence in carrying out palliative care. CONCLUSION Participants' lack of confidence in performing palliative care makes for increased challenges, particularly in uncertainty about family assessments, palliative care discussions and lack of palliative care training. Strengthening palliative care curricula in nursing education and professional training is imperative to enhance ICU nurses' confidence. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Strengthening palliative care education and training, particularly in relation to palliative care communication, is critical. Implementing and tailoring culturally relevant palliative care call for attention to practice and for policy changes in palliative care delivery in China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To provide appropriate palliative care, nurses should have appropriate level of self-efficacy in palliative care, but the levels among nurses were low. To improve the levels effectively, self-efficacy in palliative care should be assessed using reliable and valid instruments. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Self-Efficacy in Palliative Care Scale in Korean nurses. METHODS In this cross-sectional, observational study, 272 nurses (mean age: 30 years) were enrolled from 6 university-affiliated medical centers or community hospitals in South Korea. Data on self-efficacy and demographic characteristics were collected. Validity was assessed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (SPSS and Mplus). Reliability and homogeneity were assessed by Cronbach's alpha and item analyses (SPSS), respectively. RESULTS The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the 4-factor structure (communication, assessment and symptom management, psychosocial and spiritual management of patient and family, and multiprofessional teamworking) with factor loadings >.60 and with good model fit: root mean square error of approximation =.07, Tucker-Lewis index =.94, comparative fit index =.95, and standardized root mean square residual =.04. Cronbach's alphas for the total scale and each of the subscales ranged from .883 to .965. The corrected item-total correlation coefficients of all items ranged from .61 to .90. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS The findings of this study supported the reliability and validity of this instrument among Korean nurses. This instrument can be used to assess nurses' self-efficacy in palliative care and to test intervention effects on it.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To synthesize nursing students' knowledge and attitudes about end-of-life care and to identify strategic directions for optimizing end-of-life care education. DESIGN A meta-analysis of observational studies. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CNKI, and WANFANG 8 electronic databases in English and Chinese were systematically searched from inception until 10 April 2022. REVIEW METHODS Two reviewers independently screened literature and extracted data using structured tables. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was used to appraise the methodological quality of included studies. The study outcomes were synthesized using a meta-analysis. RESULTS 26 cross-sectional studies of medium or high quality from 13 countries met the eligibility criteria, involving 9749 nursing students. In our review, nursing students demonstrated insufficient knowledge about end-of-life care, with a pooled mean score of 7.50 (95 % CI: 6.55-8.45); of these, knowledge about philosophy and principles, psychosocial and spiritual care, and pain and symptom management were all deficient, with pooled mean scores of 1.49 (95 % CI: 0.78-2.21), 1.00 (95 % CI: 0.35-1.65), and 3.44 (95 % CI: 2.25-4.63), respectively. Conversely, nursing students showed positive attitudes toward end-of-life care, with a pooled mean score of 102.97 (95 % CI: 99.43-106.51). The subgroup analysis revealed that male nursing students had lower pooled mean scores for end-of-life care knowledge and attitudes. CONCLUSION There is a mismatch between nursing students' knowledge and attitudes about end-of-life care, they have a positive attitude but lack the necessary knowledge. Male nursing students seem to have a greater deficit of knowledge and a relatively conservative attitude toward end-of-life care. These findings may provide a significant reference for nursing educators to adjust educational strategies promptly.

Abstract
Background In China, there is a culture of death-avoidance and death-denying. Influenced by this distinctive socio-cultural views surrounding death, nurses often find it challenging to handle death and care for dying patients. This study explores the nurses’ attitudes and coping strategies concerning death and caring for dying patients in a cultural context of death taboo. Methods This research is a qualitative study that employs in-depth, semi-structured interviews with nurses from two major hospitals in Guangzhou, China. Overall, 28 nurses from four departments with high patient death rate were recruited and interviewed. All of the interviews were analyzed thematically. Results The nurses who participated in this study expressed attitudes toward death and caring for dying patients from both a personal dimension and a professional dimension. The personal dimension is influenced by traditional culture and societal attitudes towards death and dying, while their professional dimension is congruent with the nursing and palliative care values concerning death and dying. With an obvious discrepancy between these two dimensions, Chinese nurses adopt three strategies in their practice to solve this tension: boundary-drawing to separate their personal and professional life, complying with the existing cultural values at work, and constructing positive meanings for end-of-life care. Conclusion In a society that traditionally avoids making any reference to death, it is useful to reduce cultural taboo and construct positive meanings in end-of-life care, death education and the development of palliative care. Meanwhile, nurses also need institutional support, education and training to transition smoothly from a novice to a mature professional when handling patient death. Abstract
Background Hospice and palliative care (HPC) aims to improve end-of-life quality and has received much more attention through the lens of an aging population in the midst of the coronavirus disease pandemic. However, several barriers remain in China due to a lack of professional HPC providers with positive behavioral intentions. Therefore, we conducted an original study introducing machine learning to explore individual behavioral intentions and detect factors of enablers of, and barriers to, excavating potential human resources and improving HPC accessibility. Methods A cross-sectional study was designed to investigate healthcare providers' behavioral intentions, knowledge, attitudes, and practices in hospice care (KAPHC) with an indigenized KAPHC scale. Binary Logistic Regression and Random Forest Classifier (RFC) were performed to model impacting and predict individual behavioral intentions. Results The RFC showed high sensitivity (accuracy = 0.75; F1 score = 0.84; recall = 0.94). Attitude could directly or indirectly improve work enthusiasm and is the most efficient approach to reveal behavioral intentions. Continuous practice could also improve individual confidence and willingness to provide HPC. In addition, scientific knowledge and related skills were the foundation of implementing HPC. Conclusion Individual behavioral intention is crucial for improving HPC accessibility, particularly at the initial stage. A well-trained RFC can help estimate individual behavioral intentions to organize a productive team and promote additional policies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinicians delivering palliative care require the specific knowledge, skill and understanding to meet the needs of the dying. Research shows that undergraduate nursing students report feeling inadequately prepared to provide safe and effective palliative care. OBJECTIVES To identify existing empirical evidence on generalist palliative care content within international undergraduate nursing curricula and to synthesize existing generalist palliative care topics. DESIGN An integrative systematic review was conducted and reported in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines and registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). DATA SOURCES Keywords were searched in six electronic databases CINAHL, Medline, APA PsycINFO, SCOPUS, Cochran Library and ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Database, between January 2000 and February 2022. REVIEW METHODS Studies were selected as per a pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Tabulation of the author, year, country, aim, participants and setting, method, generalist palliative care content topics, additional findings and limitations were compiled. A thematic analysis of the data was conducted to organise and categorise generalist palliative care topics into an additional table followed by a narrative synthesis. RESULTS Of the n = 1014 papers retrieved, n = 13 studies of varying methodological quality were included in the analysis (n = 8 quantitative descriptive, n = 5 mixed method). Most studies were published in high income countries with developed economies. Methods used to obtain data include survey, extraction of secondary data and expert consensus. Generalist palliative care topics were presented as a list reporting frequency taught/discussed/cited (n = 10), recommended competencies (n = 2), and teaching modules (n = 1). A large variety of topics were identified with differing levels of detail and clear differences in topics identified globally. Overall, the most frequently mentioned generalist palliative care topics were pain and symptom management (n = 12), grief loss & bereavement (n = 12) and communication (n = 11). CONCLUSIONS This review demonstrates for the first time that international primary research evidence on generalist palliative care content in undergraduate nursing curriculum is minimal, of varying methodological quality, with visible inconsistencies among studies designed to inform curriculum verses studies reporting what is taught to students. More research is required to create evidence informed generalist palliative care content for undergraduate nursing curriculum. RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended for future research to use international consensus-based methods to inform and develop internationally agreed educational topics to optimise patient care at the point of nurse registration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurse-led hospice teams are an emerging trend in contemporary health care practice in China. However, Chinese nursing students are often ill-prepared to work in hospice care. Study findings on the attitude of nursing students toward the care of people who are dying and death varied among different countries and regions. OBJECTIVES To propose and empirically test a mediating model that examines how death attitude and meaning in life interact to affect Chinese undergraduate nursing students and their attitude toward the care of people who are dying. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS A convenience sample of 1410 Chinese undergraduate nursing students. METHODS Data were collected from July to December 2020 using Chinese versions of the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale, Form B (FATCOD-B-C), Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R-C), and Purpose in Life Test (CPLT-C). SPSS version 22.0 and AMOS version 24.0 were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The average FATCOD-B-C score was 98.28 ± 8.02. Death attitude and meaning in life were positively correlated with attitude toward care of the dying (p < 0.001), but death attitude was negatively correlated with meaning in life (p < 0.001). Pathway analysis showed that fear of death was significantly and positively correlated with attitude toward care of people who are dying. A mediating role was found among neutral acceptance, escape acceptance, and meaning in life to some extent. Meaning in life suppressed effects among the model. CONCLUSION This study revealed that Chinese undergraduate nursing students' attitude toward care of the dying was a positive nurturing process. Future nurse education should first identity the fear of death, neutral acceptance, or escape acceptance of nursing students' death attitude, and then develop a hospice curriculum based on fear management.

Abstract
(1) Background: Nursing students should be well-prepared and educated in order to provide high-quality palliative care (PC) to patients with chronic diseases, which will have an impact on the quality of care for dying patients in the future; this study aimed to investigate the level of knowledge about PC and attitudes towards the care of dying patients among Palestinian nursing undergraduate students; (2) Methods: The study was a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study design of 410 nursing students who participated and completed the questionnaire. The PC Quiz for Nurses (PCQN) and the Short Version of the Frommelt Attitudes Towards Care of the Dying (FATCOD) Form B Scales were used to assess students’ PC knowledge and attitudes toward PC and caring for dying patients. Generalized linear regression analysis was applied to identify the influencing variables on knowledge and attitudes; (3) Results: The overall knowledge mean score was 7.42 ± 2.93, ranging from 0 to 20, which indicates that nursing students lacked knowledge about PC; however, they have a positive attitude (25.94 ± 4.72; ranging from 9 to 45) toward care for a dying person. Receiving lectures or training about PC, caring for relatives in their last days of life, gender, and year of study were independently associated with students’ knowledge and attitudes about PC and care of dying patients; and (4) Conclusion: This study generated evidence showing insufficient knowledge about PC among nursing students at the Al-Quds University, Palestine, albeit a favorable attitude towards EoLC was shown. Integrating PC education into the nursing curriculum at Palestinian Universities need to increase their awareness of PC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the aging of the population, high rates of cancer and comorbidity complexity, the end-of-life care for patients will be ever more important. Nurses have always played an essential role in end-of-life care. Insufficient education and training in end-of-life care has been regarded as a major reason of inadequate symptom recognition, symptom management, and communication which results in mental trauma for both the patient's family and attending health care providers. Undergraduate nurses do end-of-life care as part of their clinical learning. However, undergraduate nurses' perceptions of the education they received about end-of-life care are not documented. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to critically explore the current state of education regarding end-of-life care from the perspectives of undergraduate nurses. METHODS We used a descriptive qualitative design. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted from May to August 2020, with a purposive sample of 15 fourth-year undergraduate nurses who finished the internship. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. FINDINGS Three main themes relating to undergraduate nurses' experiences of end-of-life care education emerged from the thematic analysis: 1) Universities provide foundational knowledge about end-of-life care, but it still needs improvement; 2) Clinical practice consolidates and drives undergraduate nurses' knowledge, skills and confidence about end-of-life care; and 3) cultural attitudes of patients' family toward disease and death sometimes impedes learning and knowledge translation about end-of-life care. CONCLUSION Undergraduate nursing students benefit from not only theoretical content delivered in the university setting but also practice happened on clinical placement. The current undergraduate curriculum, related to end-of-life care, is disjointed. Meanwhile, undergraduate nurses' learning and knowledge translation of end-of-life care are impeded by cultural attitudes toward disease and death.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to understand the cognition and experience of oncology nurses in China when responding to a patient's request to hasten death, to describe the obstacles that prevent their response, and to provide suggestions for dealing with the patient's request. METHODS Researchers conducted a qualitative study that consisted of open-ended, semi-structured interviews with 18 registered nurses who had more than 5 years of working experience in the oncology department at a large-scale urban hospital. We analyzed these data for content and themes. RESULTS How to deal with patients' requests to hasten death is a problem often encountered and handled by nurses in the Department of Oncology. Nurses have a certain understanding of the patients' requests to hasten death. This study abstracts four themes: (1) the nurses' cognition of the "Accelerate the process of death"; (2) the methods they use to deal with the patients' requests to hasten death; (3) the obstacles that prevent nurses from fulfilling the patients' requests to hasten death; and (4) their suggestions for improvement. CONCLUSION Nurses have a deep understanding of the real thoughts of patients who make a death request, and they hope to provide the corresponding psychological support and physical care. However, the lack of relevant knowledge, policy support, and cooperation of patients' families are obstacles that prevent them from taking action. Therefore, increasing relevant training for nurses, encouraging multi-department cooperation, and developing standardized nursing processes may lay a foundation for oncology nurses to better undertake and guide such conversations.

Abstract
Background Hospice care is a multidisciplinary approach that focused on patients’ quality of life, and nurses allocate more of their time with patients and patients’ families than those nurses working in other disciplines. Nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes toward hospice care can affect the quality of hospice care. At present, China’s hospice care institutions are suffering from an obvious shortage of nursing staff. Since clinical nurses are the main force behind the future provision of hospice care, their knowledge of, attitudes and willingness to practice can greatly promoted the growth of hospice care, however, available data on clinical nurses’ willingness to practice hospice care are limited. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study design was employed to collect data from 1833 nurses working in tertiary or secondary general hospitals in Guangxi, China. We examined nurses’ demographic characteristics and scores on the Chinese version of the hospice care knowledge scale, the Chinese version of the Bradley Attitude Assessment Questionnaire, and a brief quiz concerning their willingness to practice hospice care in the future. Descriptive, single factor, multiple regression analyses and logistic regression analyses were used for data analysis. Results Nurses displayed moderate mean scores for both knowledge of and attitudes, and only 505 (27.5%) nurses expressed their willingness to practice hospice care, 1329 (72.5%) of nurses sampled expressed their unwillingness or uncertainty. Multivariate regression analyses showed that education, professional qualification, monthly income, whether they had been trained in hospice care, and willingness to practice hospice care were the main influencing factors of knowledge; education, whether they lived with someone aged >60 years, and whether they had been trained in hospice care were main factors influencing attitudes. Additionally, logistic regression analyses showed that hospice care knowledge, whether they had been trained in hospice care, and whether they had clinical experience affected the nurses’ willingness to practice hospice care. Conclusion This study highlighted a knowledge gap and moderate attitudes toward hospice care among nurses, and most nurses did not prefer to practice hospice care. Having been trained in hospice care was the main common factor of nurses’ knowledge of, attitudes toward, and willingness to practice hospice care in the future, indicating the necessity to provide nurses with more targeted hospice care training.

Abstract
(1) Background: Nurses can find people with advanced diseases or in their last days of life during their professional careers and in many different care settings. For this reason, they need to have at least a basic level of palliative care education since they are the professional cohort treating these patients in a very close way. This research aims to determine the level of knowledge in palliative care of Spanish nurses and establish any possible difference based on their experience and training in palliative care. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional design using survey methods (distributed an online questionnaire) aimed at Spanish registered nurses. A validated questionnaire (PCQN-SV) was used to determine the level of knowledge in palliative care; information on some variables to characterize the population was also collected (experience and education in palliative care, years of professional experience, academic level, and others). Uni and bivariate descriptive analyses were performed. A binary logistic regression model was also developed to identify those variables that influenced obtaining results higher than the population’s average. (3) Results: Spanish nurses have a medium–low level of knowledge in palliative care, higher in those who have previous experience or education in this area. Statistically significant differences were also found according to the area in which their caring activity was developed. (4) Conclusions: It is necessary to implement strategies for the basic training of nursing professionals in palliative care to offer quality care to people in advanced stages of illnesses or at the end of their lives.

Abstract
Background: Palliative care is an essential part of medical practice, however, it has developed slowly in China. We aimed to analyze the current situations of the cognition on palliative care among the nurses in Shandong Province, China. Methods: This was a cross sectional study. Investigation of 1050 nurses came from 5 third-class hospitals and 5 second-class hospitals in Shandong Province, China from Jul to Oct in 2018. The questionnaire included 4 parts: general information of the subject, the questionnaire of palliative nursing knowledge, attitude, and the behavior. Data were collected by the APP. Overall, after eliminating the invalid questionnaires, 1026 questionnaires were included in the final analyses. The software Stata 14.2 was used for all statistical analyses. Results: The score of knowledge and attitude was low, the practice was higher. Multivariate analysis results: the significant independent variables of univariate analysis were included in the multivariate non-conditional logistic regression model for analysis. Some departments had statistical significance in knowledge multivariate Logistic regression analysis. The multivariate logistic regression analysis of practice was significant for physical health and religious beliefs. The statistical variables of the total score of cognition were gender, age of care, health status and religious beliefs. Conclusion: Nursing knowledge is lacking and attitude remains to be improved as soon as possible. It is vital to improve the cognition of palliative care of nurses in Shandong general hospitals by developing relevant rules and regulations, strengthening the supervision of relevant ant departments, and enhancing training for nurses.

Abstract
Aim Nursing students report emotional distress and feelings of inadequacy to the complexity of palliative care. This study aimed to examine nursing students’ attainment of learning outcomes in palliative care through simulation and hospital placement. Design A longitudinal, intervention study. Methods Fifty‐five second‐year bachelor nursing students participated. Three waves of assessments were performed: (1) pretest; (2) postsimulation test and (3) postplacement test after the completion of the placement. Non‐parametric Wilcoxon's signed‐rank test for paired samples was used to test for differences between assessments of knowledge, skills and competence before and after simulation, and between postsimulation and post hospital placement. Results The results showed positive differences between pre‐ and postsimulation, indicating that learning outcomes were attained through simulation. However, negative differences between the postplacement test and postsimulation test scores indicated that the participants had practiced learning outcome from the simulation to a small degree during placement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is crucial that future nurses be prepared with the knowledge and skills to provide palliative care (PC). AIMS This study aimed to investigate Mongolian nursing students' PC knowledge and attitudes towards end-of-life (EOL) care, as well as identify related predictors. METHODS Participants were 141 students who enrolled in nursing program in Mongolia. RESULTS Mean Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN) score was 7.15 out of 20. The mean Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD) score was 64.2 out of 100. Older age, male gender, and higher satisfaction with nursing school were significant predictors of higher levels of palliative care knowledge. Living in traditional Mongolian housing (Ger) and having clinical EOL experience were significant predictors of positive attitudes towards EOL care. CONCLUSIONS Mongolian senior nursing students were inadequately prepared to provide PC. PC nursing education in Mongolia needs to be improved to meet an appropriate global standard.
