Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the determinants that influence the outcome of the return to work (RTW) after occupational injuries. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study at the National Health Insurance Fund of Tunisia among victims of occupational injuries. Individual and professional factors have been evaluated through a face-to-face questionnaire for ten months. Biomechanical exposure was estimated by the job-exposure matrix "MADE" and social support by the Social Support Scale. Along with descriptive statistics, we used bivariate analysis, binary logistic regression, and random forest. RESULTS We included 199 injured workers aged 20-60 years (mean = 42.73; 79.9 % male).Of the 199 injured workers, 39.7 % had unsuccessful RTW. Low social support, biomechanical exposure, blue-collar workers, working long hours, and severe injuries were associated with an unsuccessful return to work. In the variable importance plot issued from the random forest model, low social support at work was the most important risk factor of an unsuccessful RTW, followed by MADE variables: repetitiveness and effort. CONCLUSION Biomechanical exposure and social support are main influencers of the return-to-work process.

Abstract
PURPOSE A significant proportion of cancer patients suffer from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). This descriptive study aimed to examine patients' experience of CIPN symptoms, daily limitations, involvement of healthcare professionals, and social support. METHODS Cross-sectional data have been collected in the Netherlands via a national online questionnaire comprising closed items only (February 2021). RESULTS Out of 3752 respondents, 1975 received chemotherapy only (i.e., without targeted therapy) and were therefore included. The majority (71.2%) reported symptoms in both hands and feet (e.g., tingling and loss of sensation or diminished sensation). Participants reported most limitations in household chores, social activities, hobbies, sports, walking, and sleeping and least in family/(taking care of) children, cycling, driving, self-care, eating and drinking, and sexuality and intimacy. Many patients indicated that their healthcare professionals informed them about the possibility of CIPN development before treatment (58.4%), and they paid attention to CIPN during and after treatment (53.1%). However, many patients (43%) reported a lack of information on what to do when CIPN develops. Few participants (22%) visited their general practitioner (GP) for CIPN. In general, patients' social environments sometimes to always showed empathy to patients. CONCLUSIONS Symptoms of CIPN are frequently reported and can result in various daily limitations. Support from professionals and peers is crucial in managing CIPN, which is sometimes lacking. Appropriate guidance and support should be provided to patients to decrease the impact of CIPN on daily life. Future research should investigate differences in chemotherapeutic agents and the resulting symptoms and consequences.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aims of this study were to investigate the rate and time to return to work (RTW) after transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and to explore the impact of disease or work-related factors leading to variations in RTW outcomes. METHODS Cross-sectional survey of disease, socioeconomic, work-related and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). Qualitative analysis of responses for facilitators and barriers to RTW. RESULTS A total of 47 participants employed at diagnosis were included in the study, with an average age 56 years. Median survey time 3.2 years. 22 participants underwent TORS only with 25 undergoing TORS with adjuvant therapy. 93.6 % had stage 1 disease. 95.7 % of participants RTW after TORS with a mean time of 13.6 weeks. Patients returned earlier after TORS alone compared to those requiring adjuvant treatment (10 weeks vs. 17 weeks; p = 0.13) Overall high HR-QOL metrics for all patients, with those undergoing adjuvant having significantly poorer outcomes for the dry mouth/sticky saliva (9.1 vs 41.3, p=<0.001) items. Qualitative analysis of free text responses showed facilitators and barriers to RTW fell under four main categories: physical, phycological/emotional, financial and workplace. CONCLUSION High rate of RTW amongst patients after TORS, which is the highest reported amongst head and neck cancer literature to date. Participants returned earlier after surgery only compared to adjuvant treatment, but both groups reported high HR-QOL metrics. Physical effects of treatment, including fatigue and oral dysfunction were some of the main barriers to RTW; whereas flexible working arrangements and support from employer/colleagues were major facilitators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately onethird of cancer survivors encounter challenges reintegrating into the workforce, often experiencing involuntary unemployment and/or partial or full work disability following diagnosis and treatment. Returning to paid employment presents evident challenges due to uncertainties regarding work ability, perceived employer discrimination, and a lack of support, thereby risking social exclusion. However, interventions addressing return to paid employment among unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors are scarce. Here, we describe the protocol of a randomized controlled trial (RCT), including a process and economic evaluation, evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the PLACES (unemPLoyed cAnCEr survivors Support) intervention aimed at supporting unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors returning to paid employment. METHODS A two-armed RCT with a 12-month follow-up period will be conducted. Eligible participants: (1) are of working age (18-65 years), (2) are diagnosed with cancer between 6 months and 10 years ago, (3) are unemployed and/or partially or fully work-disabled, (4) have completed cancer treatment, and (5) are seeking paid employment and are motivated to initiate work immediately. Participants will primarily be identified through the Dutch Social Security Agency and the Netherlands Cancer Registry and recruited via healthcare professionals. Participants randomly allocated to the intervention group (n = 82) will receive the PLACES intervention: a tailored supported employment intervention based on the principles of Individual Placement and Support (IPS). This includes support in seeking, returning to, and maintaining paid employment. Participants allocated to the control group (n = 82) will receive care as usual. All participants will be asked to complete questionnaires, at baseline (T0), and after 3 (T1), 6 (T2), and 12 (T3) months of follow-up. The primary outcome is paid employment [yes/no]. Secondary outcomes are time until paid employment, change in working hours, work ability, quality of (working) life, and self-efficacy regarding return to work. Additionally, process and economic evaluations will be conducted. DISCUSSION We hypothesize that the PLACES intervention will be effective in obtaining paid employment, enhancing work ability, and improving quality of life. In addition, we expect the intervention to be cost-effective. If proven effective and cost-effective, actions should be taken to implement the intervention in usual care. Abstract
PURPOSE Clinical work-integrating care (CWIC) refers to paying attention to work participation in a clinical setting. Working patients may benefit from CWIC. The purpose of this study is to explore the extent and nature to which medical specialists provide CWIC and what policies and guidelines oblige or recommend specialists to do. METHODS A scoping review was conducted. The databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, Psychinfo, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched for studies on the extent and nature of CWIC and supplemented by gray literature on policies and guidelines. Six main categories were defined a priori. Applying a meta-aggregative approach, subcategories were subsequently defined using qualitative data. Next, quantitative findings were integrated into these subcategories. A separate narrative of policies and guidelines using the same main categories was constructed. RESULTS In total, 70 studies and 55 gray literature documents were included. The main findings per category were as follows: (1) collecting data on the occupation of patients varied widely; (2) most specialists did not routinely discuss work, but recent studies showed an increasing tendency to do so, which corresponds to recent policies and guidelines; (3) work-related advice ranged from general advice to patient-physician collaboration about work-related decisions; (4) CWIC was driven by legislation in many countries; (5) specialists sometimes collaborated in multidisciplinary teams to provide CWIC; and (6) medical guidelines regarding CWIC were generally not available. CONCLUSION Medical specialists provide a wide variety of CWIC ranging from assessing a patient's occupation to extensive collaboration with patients and other professionals to support work participation. Lack of medical guidelines could explain the variety of these practices.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore experiences of unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors who have pursued to return to paid employment. METHODS Four digital focus group interviews were conducted with 16 cancer survivors (< 10 years post-diagnosis) who have pursued to return to work within the last 2 years. Interview topics included motivations, facilitators of and barriers to job seeking, and returning to and maintaining paid employment. Interview audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using conventional content analyses. RESULTS Participants were mostly female (94%), and the majority had successfully returned to paid employment (56%). Both intrinsic factors (e.g., sense of purpose, social interactions) and extrinsic factors (e.g., financial necessity) motivated their return to paid employment. During job seeking, participants experienced facilitators including support, personal qualities (e.g., life experience), and trial workplaces. Barriers included inadequate support, perceived employer discrimination, and work ability uncertainty. Returning to and maintaining employment was facilitated by flexible work, supportive colleagues, and intrinsic drive, while barriers included side effects (e.g., fatigue) and overly demanding work. CONCLUSIONS Unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors are generally motivated to return to paid employment by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, but uncertainty about their ability and inadequate support may hinder this. These findings highlight the need for trial workplaces, support during every phase of return to paid employment, and a flexible, supportive workplace. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Tailored interventions addressing the needs identified in this study are urgently needed. The recommendations provided offer strategies for various stakeholders to enhance support for unemployed and work-disabled cancer survivors.

Abstract
PUR POSE: A significant proportion of women with breast cancer want to RTW (return to work) after treatment. Employers play a key role in facilitating RTW for these employees who face distinct challenges. However, the portrait of these challenges remains to be documented from the perspective of employer representatives. The purpose of this article is to describe the perceptions of Canadian employer representatives regarding the management of the RTW of BCSs (breast cancer survivors). METHODS Thirteen qualitative interviews were conducted with representatives from businesses of various sizes (< 100 employees, 100-500 employees, > 500 employees). Transcribed data were subjected to iterative data analysis. RESULTS Three major themes emerged to describe employer representatives' perceptions of managing RTW of BCS. These are (1) providing tailored support; (2) remaining 'human' while managing RTW; and (3) facing the challenges of RTW management after breast cancer. The first two themes were perceived as facilitating RTW. The challenges identified concern uncertainty, communication with the employee, maintaining a supernumerary work position, balancing employee and organizational interests, reconciling with colleagues' complaints, and collaboration among stakeholders. CONCLUSIONS Employers can adopt a humanistic management style by offering flexibility and increased accommodation for BCS who RTW. They can also be more sensitive to this diagnosis, leading some to seek more information from those around them who have experienced it. Employers require increased awareness about diagnosis and side effects, be more confident to communicate, and improved collaboration between stakeholders to facilitate the RTW of BCS. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Employers who focus on the individual needs of cancer survivors during RTW can facilitate creative and personalized solutions for a sustainable RTW and help survivors recover their lives after cancer.

Abstract
For breast cancer survivors, returning to work is an important step for their personal, financial, and psycho-social recovery. Returning to work as a school counselor can be particularly challenging because of the demands of their job and stress at work. This qualitative study examines return to work among school counselors who are breast cancer survivors. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 survivors of breast cancer stages I-III between the ages of 32 and 55, and up to ten years after the completion of chemotherapy. Interviews focused on the discovery of the illness, treatment period, ramifications of the diagnosis on various aspects of life, and implications for work. Using thematic analysis of the data collected, analysis of the findings revealed three key themes: 1) "Everyone is replaceable": The significance of disruptions in work continuity for school counselors who are breast cancer survivors. 2) "From Zero to a Hundred": Challenges Faced by Counselors in Returning to Work after Breast Cancer Recovery.3) "It's hard to listen to counselees' problems when I am immersed in my own crisis": How surviving breast cancer affects return to work among school counselors. Findings highlight the unique needs of these counselors and the challenges they face upon returning to work. The study discusses recommendations for school principals including training, advocacy, and awareness to support survivors and improve their return to work.

Abstract
Health disparities by socioeconomic status (SES) are potentially shaped by how an individual's health status and work capacity are affected by the incidence of illness, and how these effects vary across SES groups. We examine the impact of illness on the dynamics of health status, work activity and income in older Singaporeans to gain new insights on how ill health shapes the socioeconomic health gradient. Our data comprise of 60 monthly waves (2015-2019) of panel survey data containing 445,464 person-observations from 11,827 unique respondents from Singapore. We apply a matched event-study difference-in-differences research design to track how older adults' health and work changes following the diagnosis of heart disease and cancer. Our focus is how the dynamics of health and work differ for different SES groups, which we measure by post-secondary education attainment. We find that the dynamics of how self-assessed health recovers following the diagnosis of a new heart disease or cancer do not vary significantly across SES groups. Work activity however varies significantly, with less well-educated males and females being significantly less likely to be in active employment and have income from work, and are marginally more likely to be in retirement following the onset of ill health. By contrast, more well-educated males work more, and earn more a year after the health shock than they did before they fell ill. Occupational differences likely played a role in how work activity of less well-educated men decline more after an acute health event compared with more well-educated men. Understanding the drivers of the socioeconomic health gradient necessitates a focus on individual-level factors, as well as system-level influences, that affect health and work.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aims to assess the efficacy of stage-matched, self-managed Return to Work (RTW) interventions in enhancing RTW outcomes among colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors. METHODS This trial, conducted in South Korea, enrolled 58 unemployed survivors of colorectal cancer. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group received a self-managed return-to-work intervention based on the trans-theoretical model, while the control group received an educational booklet. Assessments were conducted at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months to measure changes in various factors including return-to-work status and HRQOL. RESULTS In the experimental group, 28 participants were randomly assigned, while 30 individuals were allocated to the control group. The experimental group exhibited a higher proportion of individuals achieving RTW (64.5% vs 39.3%, p = 0.013) and demonstrated greater improvements in work ability (p = 0.001), RTW self-efficacy (p = 0.035), readiness for RTW in the prepared-for-action (p < 00.0001), uncertain maintenance (p = 0.033), and proactive maintenance (p < 00.0001) stages, quality of working life (p = 0.003), HRQOL (p < 0.05), and illness perception (p < 0.05) compared to the control group at the 12-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Stage-matched self-managed RTW interventions incorporating TTM principles may effectively enhance RTW outcomes and work ability among CRC survivors.

Abstract
Return to work (RTW) is a marker of functional recovery for working-age cancer survivors. Identifying factors that impact on RTW in cancer survivors is an essential step to guide further research and interventions to support RTW. This systematic review aimed to identify nontreatment, non-cancer-related variables impacting RTW in Australian cancer survivors. A systematic search was conducted in EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Studies were eligible if they included: (1) adults living post diagnosis of malignancy; (2) quantitative data for nontreatment, non-cancer-related variables impacting RTW; (3) only Australian participants. Included studies were critically appraised, and relevant data extracted and synthesized narratively. Six studies were included in the review, published between 2008 and 2020. Studies were of variable quality and mixed methodologies. One study included malignancies of any type with the remainder focusing on survivors of colorectal cancer (n = 3), oropharyngeal cancer (n = 1), and glioblastoma multiforme (n = 1). Multiple factors were related to RTW in individual studies, including older age, presence of three or more comorbidities, fewer work hours pre-morbidly, lower body mass index, longer than recommended sleep duration, and not having private health insurance; however, there was limited consistency in findings between studies. Other variables examined included: occupation type, household income, healthy lifestyle behaviors, flexibility, and duration of employment with workplace; however, no significant associations with RTW were reported. Further research is required to gather compelling evidence on factors that influence RTW in Australian cancer survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer survival is often accompanied by late effects that can be mitigated by tailored rehabilitation. In Norway, this has traditionally been offered as residential programs, whereas community-based cancer rehabilitation programs are lacking. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a newly developed community-based multidimensional cancer rehabilitation program in Norway. METHODS A feasibility study with a mixed methods explanatory sequential design was implemented. The intervention was a 12-week group-based rehabilitation program comprising 5 components: goal setting, physical exercise, psychoeducation, individual follow-up consultations, and peer support. Feasibility was assessed through recruitment, retention, and intervention delivery. Acceptability was assessed through intervention adherence and participant evaluation. Qualitative data were generated from focus group interviews. Statistical analyses were descriptive, and qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed using framework analyses. RESULTS Sixty participants started, and 55 completed the 12-week rehabilitation program. The majority were female (80%), and the mean age was 56 years. The largest diagnostic group was breast cancer (42%). Retention was high (92%), as were adherence rates for all intervention components. The exercise component was rated the most beneficial, followed by individual consultations and peer support. Qualitative findings contributed to explaining the high adherence and positive evaluation. CONCLUSION High retention, strong adherence, and positive evaluation imply that the community-based program was feasible and acceptable to cancer survivors. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE The results will aid intervention refinement and contribute to a future randomized controlled trial to examine its effectiveness. If successful, the rehabilitation program could be implemented in the Norwegian Cancer Pathway "Home."

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Pathways to Wellness randomized controlled trial found that 2 behavioral interventions, mindfulness awareness practices and survivorship education, reduced depressive symptoms in younger breast cancer survivors (BCSs) compared with wait-list control. This secondary analysis examines whether the interventions led to reduced loss of work productivity among younger BCSs and whether such reductions were mediated by reductions in depressive symptoms. METHODS The Work Productivity and Activity Impairment scale was used to measure work productivity loss at 4 assessment time points. Correlates of productivity loss at enrollment were examined using multivariable linear regression. Differences in change over time in productivity loss between each intervention group and control were assessed using linear mixed models. Reduced depressive symptoms were tested as a mediator of reduced productivity loss. RESULTS Of 247 trial participants, 199 were employed and included in the analyses. At enrollment, higher productivity loss was associated with chemotherapy receipt (P = .003), younger age (P = .021), more severe cognitive problems (P = .002), higher musculoskeletal pain severity (P = .002), more depressive symptoms (P = .016), and higher fatigue severity (P = .033). The mindfulness intervention led to significantly less productivity loss compared with control at all 3 postintervention assessment points (all P < .05), with about 54% of the effect mediated by reduction in depressive symptoms. Survivorship education was not associated with reduced loss of productivity. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that addressing depressive symptoms through behavioral interventions, such as mindfulness, may mitigate impacts on work productivity in younger BCSs.

Abstract
Introduction Existing evidence of returning-to-work (RTW) after cancer comes predominately from Western settings, with none prospectively examined since the initial diagnostic phase. This study prospectively documents RTW-rate, time-to-RTW, work productivity loss, and activity impairment, within the first-year post-surgery among Chinese women with breast cancer (BCW) and identify potential causal co-variants. Methods This observational longitudinal study followed 371 Chinese BCW who were employed/self-employed at the time of diagnosis at 4-week post-surgery (baseline). RTW-status and time-to-RTW were assessed at baseline (T1), 4-month (T2), 6-month (T3), and 12-month (T4) post-baseline. WPAI work productivity loss and activity impairment were assessed at T4. Baseline covariates included demographics, medical-related factors, work satisfaction, perceived work demand, work condition, RTW self-efficacy, B-IPQ illness perception, COST financial well-being, EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 physical and psychosocial functioning, and HADS psychological distress. Results A 68.2% RTW-rate (at 12-month post-surgery), prolonged delay in RTW (median = 183 days), and significant proportions of T4 work productivity loss (20%), and activity impairment (26%), were seen. BCW who were blue-collar workers with lower household income, poorer financial well-being, lower RTW self-efficacy, poorer job satisfaction, poorer illness perception, greater physical symptom distress, impaired physical functioning, and unfavorable work conditions were more likely to experience undesired work-related outcomes. Discussion Using a multifactorial approach, effective RTW interventions should focus on not only symptom management, but also to address psychosocial and work-environmental concerns. An organizational or policy level intervention involving a multidisciplinary team comprising nurses, psychologists, occupational health professionals, and relevant stakeholders in the workplace might be helpful in developing a tailored organizational policy promoting work-related outcomes in BCW.

Abstract
PURPOSE To (1) describe the challenges identified by cancer survivors, healthcare providers, and employers related to work maintenance and optimization during and after cancer treatment and (2) identify strategies that can address those challenges. METHODS We conducted content analysis of semi-structured interview data collected from cancer survivors, healthcare providers, and employers regarding workplace challenges that cancer survivors face and strategies to address them. Challenges and strategies were summarized according to whether they related to the cancer survivor, the work demands, or the work environment. RESULTS Forty-five total participants identified challenges and strategies primarily related to the cancer survivor's signs and symptoms of treatment. Healthcare providers (n = 17) focused primarily on challenges and strategies related to the cancer survivor, while employers (n = 5) focused on the work environment-especially policies and procedures that facilitate time off work and the importance of bidirectional communication between cancer survivors and employers. Cancer survivors (n = 23) identified challenges and suggestions in all three categories, though they uniquely focused on challenges relating to work demands and adjustments to those demands that would facilitate employment maintenance. CONCLUSIONS Efforts to address the many challenges that cancer survivors experience at work should include the views of cancer survivors, healthcare providers, and employers reflecting their respective domains of expertise in work demands, cancer survivors' medical care, and the work environment. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Survivors and healthcare providers are able to address many side effects that can create work challenges, but improved collaboration between survivors and employers may identify ways to modify work demands and environments to maximize employment maintenance.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to synthesize the findings of qualitative meta-syntheses (QMS) on return to work (RTW) of people with different chronic illnesses and to develop a generic RTW model that can provide advice on how to improve RTW interventions and strategies. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Epistemonikos, CENTRAL, and PsycARTICLES to find relevant QMS, published in English or German between 2000 and 2021, and adapted the meta-ethnographic approach of Noblit and Hare to synthesize their findings. RESULTS Nineteen QMS (five focusing on musculoskeletal disorders or chronic pain, four on acquired or traumatic brain injuries, four on cancer, two on mental disorders, one on spinal cord injury, and three on mixed samples) met our inclusion criteria for the meta-ethnographic synthesis. Through systematic comparison and reciprocal translation of the single QMS findings, we could identify a set of key cross-cutting themes/concepts, which formed the basis for four RTW principles and a generic RTW model. CONCLUSIONS RTW is a multifactorial and highly interactive multistakeholder process, embedded in an individual's life and working history, as well as in a determined social and societal context. It runs parallel and interdependently to the process of coping with the disease and realigning one's own identity, thus emphasizing the significance of RTW for the person. Besides symptoms and consequences of the disease, individual coping strategies, and RTW motivation, the course and success of RTW are strongly affected by the adaptability of the person's working environment and the social support in their private and working life. Thus, RTW is not only a problem of the individual, but also a matter of the social environment, especially the workplace, requiring a holistic, person-centered, and systemic approach, coordinated by a designated body, which considers the interests of all actors involved in the RTW process.

Abstract
Background Studies focusing on the return to work (RTW) experiences of patients with a brain tumor (BT) are scarce. We aimed to explore, in-depth, the occupational expectations, experiences, and satisfaction of patients who RTW after a BT diagnosis and treatment, those not able to, and their family caregivers. Methods This multicenter, cross-sectional study utilized semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Interviews were conducted with adults diagnosed with primary BT, in employment/self-employed before diagnosis, currently in follow-up care, and also with their caregivers. Results In total, 23 interviews (17 patients/6 caregivers) took place. Five themes were developed: (1) Early (adjustments and) expectations: "Thought I would be back at work the following Monday"; pre-treatment patients wanted to be better informed about potential recovery time and side-effects. (2) Drivers to RTW: "Getting my life back on track"; RTW was seen as a symbol of normality and also dictated by financial pressures. (3) Experiences returning to work: "It's had its ups and downs": patients who had successfully returned were supported by employers financially, emotionally, and practically. (4) Required support: "He had surgery and that was it": suggested support included a back-to-work scheme and comprehensive financial support. (5) Caring and paid work: The "juggling act": carer's work was significantly impacted; often reducing/increasing their working hours while managing increasing caring demands. Conclusions Future research focusing on RTW in neuro-oncology populations is needed. Interventions should be developed to improve employer/employee communication, and increase knowledge about BT care and possibilities for RTW, to support patients and caregivers towards sustained employment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Limited research exists on the employment experiences of rural women cancer survivors, yet this population may face unique barriers to employment following a cancer diagnosis. This study aims to identify facilitators and barriers to employment for rural women cancer survivors. METHODS We used a qualitative descriptive design to examine facilitators and barriers to employment for rural women cancer survivors. We conducted interviews with 33 rural women with cancer histories. RESULTS Facilitators of employment included paid time off, flexible work arrangements, and supportive workplace social networks, while barriers to employment included compromised immunity, long-term treatment effects, stigma and discrimination, and limited rural job markets. Rural women with secure employment histories generally experienced facilitators of employment, while rural women with insecure (e.g., temporary, informal, non-standard) employment histories generally faced barriers to retaining jobs and finding employment. CONCLUSIONS Formal and informal workplace support helped rural women retain their jobs during and following cancer treatment, especially those with secure employment. However, women with insecure employment histories generally faced multiple barriers to retaining and finding employment. More inclusive policies to support workers facing disabling illnesses, such as paid medical leave, are needed to ensure cancer survivors can maintain employment and/or financial security during and following their cancer treatment. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Cancer survivors with secure employment may benefit from formal and informal workplace support in retaining their employment. Those with insecure employment histories may benefit from access to job placement services and inclusive policies protecting employment for all workers experiencing disabling illness.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine how individuals treated for head and neck cancer perceive life one year after the end of treatment and how they experience supportive efforts from health care. METHODS A semi-structured interview study of 21 patients was performed one year after the end of treatment. The patients gave their views concerning physical, psychological, and return-to-work issues, and their experiences concerning rehabilitative efforts from health care and particularly the contact nurse were captured. A thematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS One year after treatment the patients were still suffering from side effects and from fear of recurrence, but they strived to live as they did before the cancer diagnosis, such as having returned to work and resuming leisure activities. Moreover, the rehabilitative efforts from health care had ended. Having access to a contact nurse, also known as a clinical nurse specialist, was positive, however, the participants lacked regular long-term follow-ups with the contact nurse regarding rehabilitation needs. Improvement possibilities were seen in clarifying the role of the contact nurse and that the contact nurse should show engagement and make the initial contact with the patients. CONCLUSION Despite the sequelae from treatment, the patients strived to live as before their diagnosis. By regular, engaged, and long-term follow-ups by the contact nurse, remaining needs may be uncovered, and appropriate individualized support and rehabilitation can be offered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the work experiences of people living with an oligodendroglioma. DESIGN This was a descriptive qualitative study. One-time semi-structured interviews exploring supportive care needs were conducted; work was discussed at various points throughout each interview. An inductive thematic analysis was undertaken. SETTING Participants were recruited across the UK through four National Health Service hospitals and the Brain Tumour Charity research involvement networks. PARTICIPANTS 19 people with grade 2 or 3 oligodendroglioma (mean age 52 years; male n=11). At diagnosis, 16 participants were working, 2 studying and 1 retired. At the interview (mean time since diagnosis 9.6 years; range 1-18 years), seven participants were working, eight retired (four on medical grounds) and four unable to work due to illness. RESULTS Seven themes were constructed: (1) physical and cognitive limitations; (2) work ability and productivity; (3) work accommodations; (4) changing roles; (5) attitudes of clients and coworkers; (6) feelings and ambitions; and (7) financial implications. Fatigue, seizures and cognitive deficits influenced work ability. A stressful work environment could exacerbate symptoms. Changes in job roles and work environment were often required. Employer and coworker support were integral to positive experiences. Work changes could result in financial stress and strain. CONCLUSIONS This study has highlighted, for the first time, influences on work experiences in this understudied population. These findings have implications for clinicians and employers, when considering the importance of work in rehabilitation for people with oligodendrogliomas, and the individually assessed adjustments required to accommodate them, should employment be desired.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most diagnosed cancer in Australian men, and the number of survivors is growing with advances in diagnosis and treatment. Work participation following PCa diagnosis and treatment becomes a significant aspect of quality of life and survivorship. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, we explored the work-related experiences of PCa survivors in Australia. METHODS Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 16 men (6 salaried employees, 10 self-employed; 8 diagnosed ≥ 5 years) purposively sampled from a community setting. Interviews were inductively analysed. RESULTS Five main themes emerged: motivations to work; treatment decisions and work; the effects of PCa and its treatment on ability to participate in work; being an employee versus being self-employed; and personal agency. PCa and its treatment side-effects were detrimental to men's work capacity and ability, and could persist over an extended period. Most men expressed a strong desire to retain work or return to work. Discussions with healthcare professionals about work-related consequences were largely missing when treatment decisions were made. Self-employed men faced greater challenges than their salaried counterparts due to high financial burden and limited social and business support. Family, workplace and wider community support, and self-care, enhanced men's work participation experiences. CONCLUSIONS PCa and its treatment substantially and persistently impacted men's working lives, and their experiences were diverse and multifaceted. Self-employed and long-term PCa survivors face greater challenges and are at high risk of poor work outcomes. A systematic approach and involvement of stakeholders at all levels is required to support ongoing work participation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ability to return to work and remain at work is an important recovery milestone after a cancer diagnosis. With the projected number of colorectal cancer patients of working age likely to increase, it is important to identify when a person is ready to resume work. There are many employment-related tools available to help people return to work after injury or illness; however, it is unknown which may be suitable for a person with colorectal cancer. AIM To identify tools related to employment readiness in colorectal cancer survivors and to chart the relevant factors of employment assessed by these tools. METHOD Literature searches were performed in PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and Medline, the Cochrane library and PsycINFO using search terms around cancer, survivorship and employment to identify all peer-reviewed articles published in English up to June 2022. RESULTS Thirty-five studies used a total of 77 tools focused on assessing employment issues experienced by people with cancer in general. Four tools were used with colorectal cancer survivors. None considered all relevant employment-related factors for colorectal cancer survivors. CONCLUSION Tools used to identify return-to-work and remain-at-work were not specific to colorectal cancer. There are a range of existing tools that collate some, but not all, of the domains and outcome criteria required to meet the employment needs of colorectal cancer survivors. To optimize work outcomes for the working colorectal cancer population, a specified tool is warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study assessed sustainable return to work (SRTW) of breast cancer survivors (BCS). METHODS We used data from the prospective French cohort, CANTO. We included 1811 stage I-III BCS who were <57 years old and employed at the moment of diagnosis and working 2 years after diagnosis. Using logistic regression, we investigated the role of clinical, health and socio-economic factors, and the work environment on SRTW 3 years after diagnosis. We compared having any sick leave with having worked continuously and being unemployed to having worked continuously between 2 and 3 years after diagnosis. RESULTS Overall, 77% (n = 1395) worked continuously after return to work (RTW). Out of the other 416 BCS, 66% had any sick leave period, 33% had been unemployed, 4% had an early retirement, 2% a disability and 1% another status (multiple situations possible). Being on sick leave was associated with age > 50 (OR = 0.59; 95%CI = 0.43-0.82), stage III (2.56; 1.70-3.85), tumour subtype HR+/HER2+ (0.61; 0.39-0.95), severe fatigue (1.45; 1.06-1.98), workplace accommodations (1.63; 1.14-2.33) and life priorities (0.71; 0.53-0.95). Unemployment was associated with age > 50 (0.45; 0.29-0.72), working in the public sector (0.31; 0.19-0.51), for a small company (3.00; 1.74-5.20) and having a fixed-term contract (7.50; 4.74-11.86). CONCLUSIONS A high number of BCS have periods of sick leave or unemployment after RTW. The determinants differ between sick leave and unemployment. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS BCS need to be supported even after RTW, which should be regarded as a process.

Abstract
Background: Supporting unemployed or work-disabled cancer survivors in their work participation can have extensive individual and societal benefits. We aimed to identify and summarise interventions for work participation of unemployed or work-disabled cancer survivors.Methods: Five databases (Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Cochrane Library) were systematically searched for quantitative studies on interventions aimed at enhancing work participation of unemployed or work-disabled cancer survivors. Work participation refers to participation in the workforce, fulfilling one's work role. Manual and automatic screening (with ASReview software) were performed on titles and abstracts, followed by manual full-text screening. Data were extracted regarding study, patient and intervention characteristics, and work participation outcomes. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane RoB2 and QUIPS tools.Results: We identified 10,771 articles, of which we included two randomised controlled trials (RCTs), of which one feasibility RCT, and three cohort studies. In total, 1862 cancer survivors were included, with predominantly breast cancer. Work participation was mainly measured as time to return to work (RTW) and RTW rate. Interventions included components of coaching (e.g., psychological or rehabilitation), training (e.g., building confidence and managing fatigue) and self-management. Two RCTs with unclear RoB did not show an effect of multicomponent interventions compared to care as usual. One cohort study found a significant effect of a psycho-educational intervention on RTW rates, with moderate RoB. The other two cohort studies, with moderate RoB, reported significant associations between components including job search and placement assistance, and work participation.Discussion: Only few interventions aimed at enhancing work participation of unemployed or work-disabled cancer survivors, have been evaluated. In two cohort studies, promising components for future multicomponent interventions were identified. However, findings suggest that more evidence is necessary on such multicomponent interventions, in which elements explicitly directed at work and including the workplace should be included.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Having a job has been associated with better Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) in cancer survivors. However, the sociodemographic and disease-related profiles characterizing the survivors being employed and those having better HRQOL largely overlap. The present study aims to discern the degree to which employment status is independently associated with cancer survivors' HRQOL or if it mainly reflects the impact of other sociodemographic and cancer-related variables. METHODS Cross-sectional study on a heterogeneous sample of 772 working-age survivors of adult-onset cancer. An instrument specifically designed to assess HRQOL in cancer survivors and Multivariate Variance Analysis (MANOVA) were used. RESULTS Survival phase, cancer type, and employment status showed the main effects on cancer survivors' HRQOL. In particular, being employed (vs unemployed) had the greatest positive association with HRQOL, affecting ten of the twelve HRQOL domains considered. Also, interaction effects highlighted the role of age (younger) and marital status (single) as risk factors for a greater negative impact of variables affecting the survivor's HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS The application of a multivariate methodology sheds new light on two relevant issues for the cancer survivor's HRQOL: (i) the existence of differences between diagnostic groups that are not attributed to other variables such as sex, and (ii) the important and independent role that employment status plays. Comprehensive cancer survivorship care should focus more on high-risk groups and include having a job as an essential aspect to consider and prompt. The fact that the employment status is susceptible to change represents a valuable opportunity to care for the wellbeing of this population.

Abstract
Work ability, or the perception of one's ability to work presently and in the future, may impact quality of life (QOL) among young adult (YA) cancer survivors. Through a convergent mixed methods design, we explored work ability, work-related goals, and QOL among YA hematologic cancer survivors within five years of diagnosis. We described associations at the individual- and microsystem (work)- levels; and compared factors across low and high work ability groups. Participants (N = 40) completed a survey and interview via digital platforms. Qualitative analysis revealed self-assessed declines in work ability led to questioning work-related goals and influenced QOL. Integrated analysis led to the development of four profiles, growing our understanding of work's influence on QOL for YA cancer survivors, and identifying components YAs considered when contemplating work-related goals after a cancer diagnosis. Larger studies are needed to elucidate these profiles and identify modifiable factors to inform targeted interventions to improve QOL.

Abstract
L’accompagnement professionnel des patients en âge de travailler est d’une importance de santé publique majeure en cancérologie. Toutefois, qu’ils reprennent le travail ou non, la priorité reste de préserver leur qualité de vie. D’ailleurs, pour certains patients, un arrêt de la carrière professionnelle peut avoir lieu au profit d’un engagement associatif et/ou auprès des services de soin et de recherche scientifique. Il s’agit d’un vrai retour à l’activité qui peut être également synonyme de tremplin professionnel lorsque les patients concernés sont en mesure de se construire une nouvelle trajectoire professionnelle en cumulant leurs compétences professionnelles initiales et leurs savoirs expérientiels acquis ; tel est l’éclairage que nous souhaitons apporter dans cet article, à l’aide d’une étude de cas. De nouvelles questions de recherche seront proposées.

Abstract
Aging workers represent an emerging, growing, and essential population for the contemporary labour market. Considering their unique characteristics, these individuals are at risk of experiencing periods of disability at work due to different reasons (e.g., chronic diseases, occupational injuries) and a different return-to-work experience compared to younger workers. The scoping review presented in this article aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to returning to work in aging people who suffered a health impairment. Information from 34 manuscripts was extracted and analyzed, enabling the identification of factors hindering and facilitating the return to work of aging individuals, with regard to four systems: the individual, work, health, and compensation. The results suggest levers accessible to the various stakeholders involved in the process of returning to work for aging individuals to promote their healthy, safe, and satisfactory participation in work after a period of disability.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of physical activity (PA) interventions on return to work (RTW) in cancer survivors, compared to usual care, and to determine the dose of PA needed to improve this outcome. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Six electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, and Scopus were searched to identify studies, and completed by a search of grey literature and health organization websites. Two authors performed screening, selection, and data extraction independently. Study and intervention characteristics were extracted and summarized. Pooled risk ratio (RR) was estimated using a weight random-effects model with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results A total of 2655 records were identified, of which 8 intervention studies were included. The sample size of the included studies varied between 41 and 240, giving a total of 1087 participants aged between 18 and 75 years. Compared with usual care, PA interventions had a significant positive effect on RTW among cancer survivors with a pooled RR of 1.29 (95% CI 1.17, 1.42). We found that PA interventions (aerobic and resistance exercises) with an exercise dose between 7.6 METs.h/week and 15 METs.h/week, consisting in 50-60 min per session of moderate to vigorous physical exercise, twice a week seems relevant in improving RTW. Conclusions Our results showed, with moderate quality evidence that PA interventions are more effective than usual care in increasing the rate of RTW in cancer survivors. Abstract
INTRODUCTION This review is to explore the relevant experience of colorectal cancer survivors' return-to-work, reintegrating and analyzing the promoting factors and obstacles of colorectal cancer survivors' return-to-work. METHODS This review followed PRISMA List. Databases including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, EM base, CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, Wangfang Database, CNKI and CBM from inception to October 2022 were searched to collect qualitative studies in the experience of colorectal cancer survivors' return-to-work. Article selection and data extraction were conducted by two researchers used the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool for qualitative researches (2016) in Australia. RESULTS Seven studies were included, the thirty-four themes distilled from the literature were grouped into eleven new categories and summed into two integrated findings: (1) facilitators to return-to-work for colorectal cancer survivors: desire and expectation for return-to-work and social dedication, economic needs, support and tolerance from employers and colleagues, work suggestions provided by professionals, health insurance policy of the workplace. (2) obstacles to return-to-work for colorectal cancer survivors: physical problems, psychological barriers, lack of family support, negative attitudes of employers and colleagues, limited information and resources available from professionals, Imperfection of related policies. CONCLUSION This study shows that colorectal cancer survivors' return-to-work is influenced by many factors. We should pay attention to and avoid obstacles, help colorectal cancer survivors recover their physical functions and maintain a positive psychological state, improve the social support for colorectal cancer survivors to return-to-work, so as to achieve comprehensive rehabilitation as soon as possible.

Abstract
Introduction The efficacy of work-related support rehabilitation for
patients with cancer remains controversial. We conduct a systematic review and
meta-analysis to explore the influence of work-related support rehabilitation on
the quality of life in patients with cancer.
Methods We have searched Pubmed, Embase, Web of science, Ebsco, and
Cochrane library databases through August 2021 for randomized controlled trials
(RCTs) assessing the effect of work-related support rehabilitation on the
quality of life in patients with cancer. This meta-analysis is performed using
the random-effect model.
Results Four RCTs are included in the meta-analysis. Overall, compared
with usual care for cancer patients, work-related support is associated with
significantly improved quality of life physical score (PCS, standard mean
difference [SMD]=0.22; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.06
to 0.37; P=0.005) and reduced quality of life pain
(SMD=−0.16; 95% CI=−0.31 to 0;
P=0.04), but showed no obvious impact on quality of life mental score
(MCS, SMD=0; 95% CI=−0.28 to 0.28;
P=0.98), time of return to work (SMD=−0.78; 95%
CI=−2.71 to 1.14; P=0.43), or the scores of work ability
(SMD=−0.01; 95% CI=−0.16 to 9.09;
P=0.13) and work limitation (SMD=0.12; 95%
CI=−0.16 to 0.40; P=0.41).
Conclusions Work-related support rehabilitation may be effective to
improve the quality of life of cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Core Set for Vocational Rehabilitation (CS-VR) of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) describes the work functioning of individuals in need of VR. We aimed to adapt the CS-VR from the perspective of cancer survivors (CSs) and stakeholders, developing a CS-VR-Onco. METHODS We held five focus groups with 17 CSs who were employed at the time of diagnosis, to discuss their work reintegration experiences. After analyzing the focus group conversations, the CS-VR-Onco was developed. During a group interview, eleven stakeholders explored barriers/facilitations in assessing the work functioning of CSs by using the CS-VR-Onco. We applied the framework method and thematic analysis. RESULTS For the focus groups, the CS-VR-Onco of 85 categories emerged, and the ICF chapters of Mental functions, Exercise and tolerance functions, Interpersonal interactions and relationships, Major life areas, General tasks and demands, Mobility, Support and relationships, and Attitudes were prioritized. For the group interview, stakeholders' perspectives can be synthetized into two themes: close to the lived experience and usability criteria. Stakeholders confirmed the categories of the CS-VR-Onco, a checklist that should be used through an integrated approach across multiple disciplines. CONCLUSIONS The adapted CS-VR-Onco reflects the CSs' lived experiences of work reintegration and the factors that have influenced this process. The CS-VR-Onco was described as complete and usable through an integrated approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate feasibility, partnerships, and study design of intervention to minimise sick leave. DESIGN AND SETTING The design was a pilot single arm intervention study in primary health care. Outcome measures at follow-ups for each participant were compared with baseline data for the same person. SUBJECTS Twenty primary health care patients with recurrent or long-term sick leave or health-related unemployment. INTERVENTION Patient education through interactive study groups that met half a day a week for eight subsequent weeks. Groups were led by experienced but not medically trained facilitators. The intervention was designed to improve participant health literacy, sense of coherence, health-related quality of life, and patient involvement in healthcare. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome was the level of sick leave. Sick leave data were obtained from medical records when available, otherwise patient reported. Secondary outcomes regarding health literacy, sense of coherence, and health-related quality of life were measured with validated questionnaires at baseline and follow-ups. RESULTS Level of sick leave decreased significantly and participation in work preparatory activities increased during follow-up. Health literacy, sense of coherence (subscale sense of meaningfulness), and health-related quality of life (subscale social functioning) showed statistically significant improvement. Intervention, partnerships, and study design were feasible. CONCLUSION An educational programme, conducted in cooperation between primary health care and partners outside the healthcare system, was feasible and showed an impact on sick leave, health literacy, sense of coherence, and health-related quality of life.KEY FINDINGSA pilot study to evaluate an educational programme with study groups conducted in cooperation between primary health care and partners outside the healthcare system showed good feasibility.Sick leave decreased significantly six months after baseline.Health literacy, sense of coherence (subscale sense of meaningfulness), and health-related quality of life (subscale social function) improved significantly 6 months after baseline.

Abstract
Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) health care providers report a desire to improve long-term outcomes and quality of life for their patients. One of the items frequently cited by patients in terms of transitioning from being a patient back to pre-HCT life is return to work (RTW). However, these patients report little support from their health care providers in facilitating this process, and only 50% to 60% achieve RTW, at a median of 3 years post-HCT. Barriers are physical, psychological, and logistical, as well as poor communication between the patient and their employer. We convened a group of experts in survivorship, rehabilitation, social work, and psychology to draft an evidence-based document to assist health care providers in guiding their patients' RTW journey. Guidance is drawn from the existing literature for HCT and general cancer patients and is divided into pre-HCT, peri-HCT, and post-HCT categories. Collaboration among health care providers, patients, and their employers is key to this transition. Suggested referrals and evaluations also are provided. The goal is for this guidance to be continually updated as we advance the field with more HCT-specific literature.

Patterns of Concerns Among Hematological Cancer Survivors. Cancer Nurs 2022; 45:447-456. Abstract
BACKGROUND Advances in treatment for hematological cancers warrant greater attention on survivorship concerns. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to describe survivorship concerns among hematological cancer survivors, identify subgroups of survivors with distinct classes of concerns, and examine sociodemographic and clinical differences across subgroups. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 1160 hematological cancer survivors, who rated their degree of concern regarding 20 physical, emotional, and practical changes. Clusters of concerns were identified using latent class analysis. Associations between respondent characteristics and cluster membership were calculated using multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS Survivors had a mean of 7.5 concerns (SD, 4.6; range, 0-19), the most frequent being fatigue/tiredness (85.4%); anxiety, stress, and worry about cancer returning (70.2%); and changes to concentration/memory (55.4%). Three distinct classes of concerns were identified: class 1 (low, 47.0%), characterized by low endorsement of most concerns, apart from fatigue; class 2 (moderate, 32.3%), characterized by high endorsement of a combination of concerns across domains; and class 3 (high, 20.7%), characterized by the highest number of concerns out of the 3 identified classes, including greater endorsement of concerns relating to sexual well-being. Class membership was differentiated by survivor age, sex, marital status, and diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Three distinct patterns of concerns were detected in a large sample of hematological cancer survivors. Patterns of concerns could be differentiated by survivor characteristics. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Our study highlights the concerns experienced by hematological cancer survivors and provides support for a tailored biopsychosocial approach to survivorship care in this context.

Abstract
Background Managers are considered to be main stakeholders in the return to work (RTW) of cancer survivors. However, the perspectives of cancer survivors and managers differ on what managerial actions should be taken during the RTW of cancer survivors. This difference might put effective collaboration and successful RTW at risk. Therefore, this study aims to reach consensus among managers and cancer survivors on the managerial actions to be taken during the four different RTW phases of cancer survivors (i.e., Disclosure, Treatment, RTW plan, Actual RTW). Methods The Technique for Research of Information by Animation of a Group of Experts (TRIAGE) was implemented with managers and cancer survivors (hereafter referred to as “experts”). An initial list of 24 actions was derived from a previous study. Firstly, for each action, fifteen experts were asked to indicate individually how important this action is per RTW phase (Likert scale from 1 – “Not important at all” to 6 – “Very important”). Consensus was reached when ≥ 80% (i.e., ≥ twelve experts) of the experts rated that action ≥5. Secondly, for each phase of the RTW process, the 15 actions with the highest percentage were discussed with eight experts during the collective consultation, except for the actions that already reached consensus. After discussion, the experts voted whether each action was important (“yes” / “no”) and consensus required ≥ 87.5% (i.e., ≥ seven experts) of the experts to consider an action as important. Results Twenty-five managerial actions were finally retained for at least one of the RTW phases, e.g., Disclosure: “respect privacy” and “radiate a positive attitude”, Treatment: “show appreciation” and “allow sufficient sick leave”, RTW Plan: “tailor” and “communicate”, and Actual RTW: “support practically” and “balance interest”. Conclusion Cancer survivors and managers reached consensus on the importance of 25 managerial actions, distributed into each phase of the RTW process. These actions should be considered an interplay of managerial actions by different stakeholders on the part of the employer (e.g., direct supervisor, HR-manager), and should be a responsibility that is shared by these stakeholders. The collective implementation of these actions within the company will help cancer survivors feel fully supported. Abstract
BackgroundWe assessed the prevalence of self-reported perceived discrimination in the workplace after the end of treatment among breast cancer (BC) survivors and studied its association with social, health-related and work-related factors.MethodsWe used data from a French prospective cohort (CANcer TOxicities) including women diagnosed with stage I–III BC. Our analysis included 2130 women who were employed, <57 years old at BC diagnosis and were working 2 years afterwards. We assessed the association between social, health-related and work-related factors and perceived discrimination in the workplace using logistic regression models.ResultsOverall, 26% of women reported perceived discrimination in the workplace after the end of treatment. Women working for a small company, in the public sector or with better overall health status were less likely to report perceived discrimination. Women who benefited from easing dispositions at their workplace, who did not feel supported by their colleagues and those who returned to work because of fear of job loss were more likely to report perceived discrimination.ConclusionsOne in four BC survivors perceives discrimination in the workplace. Health and work-related factors are associated with increased likelihood of reporting perceived discrimination.Trial registration numberNCT01993498.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Work is an important aspect of everyday life. This remains true for those living with and beyond cancer. Less is known about how the meaning of work may change over the cancer journey, the needs of the individual in response to changes and how healthcare professionals and employing organisations can meet these needs. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of work after treatment for breast cancer in a group of professional working women within the UK. METHODS This article presents an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of the experiences of 15 professional women diagnosed with breast cancer. RESULTS We discuss these women's journey from (1) rethinking the meaning of work to (2) making decisions about work ability and advice on work to (3) transitioning back in to the workplace and the value of continued engagement with employer. DISCUSSION The findings from this study demonstrate the complex interplay between living with cancer, treatment decisions and work. This study highlights two key areas for inclusion in practice: (1) support from Healthcare Professionals and judgements of functional ability and work ability and (2) the role of line managers in managing cancer and work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While many studies investigated changes in working status in cancer survivors, most studies have been performed in survivors of breast cancer and few studies evaluated factors associated with changes in the working status of cancer survivors comprehensively. We aimed to evaluate the changes in the working status of cancer survivors after diagnosis and socio-demographic, clinical, work-related and psychological factors associated with it. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey of adult patients with cancer who were working at the time of diagnosis. A trained interviewer inquired about participants' current working status, including leave of absence, discontinuing, continuing, and changing work. Sociodemographic, clinical, work-related and psychological factors were measured. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with changes in the working status. RESULTS Among the 730 patients, 29%, 18% and 6% were currently on a discontinued working, leave of absence and had changed jobs, respectively. Patients who discontinued working after cancer diagnosis were more likely to be female, have ≥ $3,000 of monthly family income, not be the principal wage earners for their families and be blue-collar workers. In clinical characteristics, advanced-stage cancer and experienced cancer recurrence was associated with leave of absence and discontinued working. In work-related and psychological factors, stress due to insufficient job control (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 2.26), interpersonal conflict (RRR = 1.86), job insecurity (RRR = 2.63), organizational system (RRR = 3.49), and lack of reward (RRR = 11.76), and less meaning to work were more likely to discontinue working after a cancer diagnosis. CONCLUSION Occupational health care professionals and other stakeholders need to openly communicate with patients with cancer about potential barriers during the return-to-work trajectory.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Important qualitative findings have accumulated on return to work after cancer from the perspective of various stakeholders. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to critically appraise the evidence produced between 2008–2017 on several key stages of the return to work process against the key stakeholders identified in the articles included. METHODS: A systematic search was done on four databases to identify relevant papers. Papers were selected based on pre-defined selection criteria. A qualitative evidence synthesis was performed on the articles included. RESULTS: A total of 57 articles were included in the analysis. Using the secondary thematic analysis, this study identified three categories of articles relative to the stakeholders included: articles focusing on patients’ experience (n = 41); articles dealing with multiple stakeholders, including patients (n = 12); and articles drawing on stakeholders other than patients (n = 4). The analysis also revealed five key stages of the return to work process which follow a sequential order and provide a comprehensive image of the process. CONCLUSIONS: More research is required on how employers view and are able to facilitate the return to work process after cancer. New forms of support must be planned and delivered by health professionals for patients who return on the labour market. The five stages model proposed in this study can help employers and policymakers to plan and deliver tailored legislation and guidance for RTW facilitation. All stakeholders must be further trained to embrace the idea that return to work is a complex process which continues long after the survivor returns to work.

Short- and long-term impact of cancer on employment and financial outcomes of adolescents and young adults (AYAs): a large population-based case-control registry study in the Netherlands. Abstract
Background Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, 18-39 years at initial cancer diagnosis, often self-report negative consequences of cancer (treatment) for their career. Less is known, however, about the objective impact of cancer on employment and financial outcomes. This study examines the employment and financial outcomes of AYA cancer survivors with nationwide population-based registry data and compares the outcomes of AYAs with cancer with an age- and sex-matched control population at year of diagnosis, 1 year later (short-term) and 5 years later (long-term). Patients and methods A total of 2527 AYAs, diagnosed in 2013 with any invasive tumor type and who survived for 5 years, were identified from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (clinical and demographic data) and linked to Statistics Netherlands (demographic, employment and financial data). AYAs were matched 1 : 4 with a control population based on age and sex (10 108 controls). Analyses included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, independent samples t-tests, McNemar tests and logistic regression. Results AYA cancer survivors were significantly less often employed compared with their controls 1 year (76.1% versus 79.5%, P < 0.001) and 5 years (79.3% versus 83.5%, P < 0.001) after diagnosis, and received more often disability benefits (9.9% versus 3.1% 1 year after diagnosis, P < 0.001; 11.2% versus 3.8% 5 years after diagnosis, P < 0.001). Unemployed AYAs were more often diagnosed with higher disease stages (P < 0.001), treated with chemotherapy (P < 0.001), radiotherapy (P < 0.001) or hormone therapy (P < 0.05) and less often with local surgery (P < 0.05) compared with employed AYAs 1 and 5 years after diagnosis. Conclusion Based on objective, nationwide, population-based registry data, AYAs’ employment and financial outcomes are significantly affected compared with age- and sex-matched controls, both short and long-term after cancer diagnosis. Providing support regarding employment and financial outcomes from diagnosis onwards may help AYAs finding their way (back) into society. Based on objective data, AYAs’ employment and financial outcomes are significantly affected compared with matched controls. AYAs were significantly more often unemployed compared with their controls 1 and 5 years after diagnosis. AYAs received significantly more often disability benefits compared with their controls 1 and 5 years after diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with a rare cancer often face delays in their diagnostic and treatment trajectory, which may affect their work. In this study, we explored experiences and needs of: 1) patients with a rare cancer regarding return to work (RTW) and work retention, and 2) (health care) professionals (HCPs) regarding work-related support of patients with a rare cancer, throughout their disease trajectory. METHODS Semi-structured, in-depth interviews with working-age patients with a rare cancer (n = 16), and HCPs (n = 9) were conducted. During the interviews, a predefined topic list was used. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed by means of thematic analysis. RESULTS In total, three themes emerged from the interviews: 1) Awareness in patients and HCPs as a first step towards work, 2) Being/becoming an expert is a tough job, and 3) Enhancing employability through early personalized guidance. CONCLUSIONS Patients with a rare cancer are confronted with uncertainties regarding work, due to an overall lack of knowledge and experience with these types of cancer. Raising awareness among patients, HCPs and employers about rare cancer and its implications, and providing timely individualized, supportive occupational care are required to improve rare cancer patients' ability to work.Implications for rehabilitationRecognizing and paying attention to the work-related consequences of a rare cancer diagnosis and its treatment is essential to facilitate rare cancer patients' occupational rehabilitation process.Multidisciplinary collaboration and involvement of HCPs specialized in rare cancer are required to provide suitable work-related support.A personalized approach is necessary to adequately address rare cancer patients' RTW and work retention needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: A high number of breast cancer survivors need to resume work. Therefore, interventions aimed at effective work-related transitions are important. OBJECTIVE: A systematic review to determine what occupational therapy interventions are effective in work-related transitions of breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Multiple databases were searched for studies on work-related interventions within the scope of occupational therapy. Studies were included if 70% or more study participants were working age (> 18 years) breast cancer survivors, and work-related transition outcome measures were used. RESULTS: The search yielded 2 872 articles, of which 12 met the inclusion criteria. When classified according to the International Classification of Function Framework, quantitative sources focussed on Body Structures and Functions component and Multicomponents (consists of the Body Structures and Functions Component and the Activities Component) showed positive effects on improving the work-related transitions of BC survivors, however, the effects were statistically insignificant and the strength of evidence was moderate. Participants in a qualitative source reported that after they underwent a physical exercise programme their work performance improved. A Multicomponents intervention study showed statistically significant improvements on self-reported work-related outcomes of BC survivors. Low evidence was found for implementing a vocational rehabilitation case management programme targeting the Activities component, which showed positive effects in reducing the sick leave days of BC survivors, but the effects were statistically insignificant. No evidence was found for programmes focussed on restoring the Participation component. CONCLUSION: The evidence included in this systematic review were insufficient to recommend occupational therapy interventions that are effective (showing statistically significant improvements) for work-related transitions of BC cancer survivors.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to understand Canadian cancer survivors’ experiences during the return-to-work (RTW) process. Methods: A prospective qualitative longitudinal design was employed using the principles of phenomenological inquiry. Cancer survivors took part in three in-depth interviews: at the end of treatment, and 3 and 9 months after the first interview. Transcripts were analyzed using constant comparative analysis, guided by the Cancer and Work model. Results: A total of 38 in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 participants. The resultant themes were: (1) supports received or desired to enable RTW; (2) others’ limited understanding of the long-term impacts of a cancer diagnosis and its treatment; (3) worries and self-doubts about returning to work; and (4) changing perspectives on life and work after cancer. Conclusions: Cancer patients returning to work after treatment often experience challenges throughout the process, including varying levels of support from others and a range of ongoing effects and motivation to RTW. There is a clear gap in terms of the professional supports available to these individuals. Future research should focus on investigating how to improve both quality and accessibility of supports in a way that is personalized to the individual.

Abstract
Objective Determine if cancer survivors have lower participation in paid work, more limitations in daily activities or more limitations in leisure compared with those without cancer, stratified by age (working age ≤65 years; retirement age >65 years). Secondary objectives are identifying sociodemographic or clinical factors associated with work, daily activities or leisure and analysis of the relationship between work, daily activities and leisure. Methods Secondary analyses, using logistic regression, were performed on three cohorts (lymphoma, prostate and thyroid cancer) from the Dutch Patient Reported Outcomes Following Initial treatment and Long‐term Evaluation of Survivorship (PROFILES) registry and a nationally representative non‐cancer sample. Results Working‐age cancer survivors (n = 926) were significantly (p < 0.001) less likely to participate in paid work and more likely to report limitations in daily activities and leisure compared to the non‐cancer cohort (n = 1279). Among retirement aged cancer survivors (n = 1046), paid work was significantly more likely (p < 0.001), as were limitations in leisure (p < 0.05), compared with the non‐cancer controls (n = 334). Conclusions Cancer impacts daily activities and leisure, as well as paid work. These roles are important for cancer survivors' quality of life, suggesting support to return to these activities may be an important component of survivorship care.

L’objectif est d’étudier les liens entre précarité sociale, soutien social perçu et retour au travail (RAT) dans la première année suivant le début des traitements adjuvants du cancer du sein. Soixante-huit patientes incluses au début des traitements adjuvants (T0) ont été suivies à 3 (T1) et 12 mois (T2). Le soutien informatif des amis à T0 favorise le RAT à T1. La précarité et le soutien négatif à T0 et T2 sont des freins au RAT à T2. La prise en charge du RAT doit être proposée et adaptée dès le début des traitements.

Abstract
Background The mortality rate from breast cancer has been declining for many years, and the population size of working-age survivors is steadily increasing. However, the recurrent side effects of cancer and its treatment can result in multiple disabilities and disruptions to day-to-day life, including work disruptions. Despite the existing knowledge of best practices regarding return to work (RTW) for breast cancer survivors, only a few interdisciplinary interventions have been developed to address the individualized needs and multiple challenges of breast cancer survivors, health care professionals, and employer and insurer representatives. Thus, it seems appropriate to develop RTW interventions collaboratively by using a co-design approach with these specific stakeholders. Objective This paper presents a protocol for developing and testing an innovative, interdisciplinary pilot intervention based on a co-design approach to better support RTW and job retention after breast cancer treatment. Methods First, a participatory research approach will be used to develop the intervention in a co-design workshop with 12 to 20 participants, including people affected by cancer, employer and insurer representatives, and health care professionals. Next, a pilot intervention will be tested in a primary care setting with 6 to 8 women affected by breast cancer. The acceptability and feasibility of the pilot intervention will be pretested through semistructured interviews with participants, health care professionals, and involved patient partners. The transcribed data will undergo an iterative content analysis. Results The first phase of the project—the co-design workshop—was completed in June 2021. The pilot test of the intervention will begin in spring 2022. The results from the test will be available in late 2022. Conclusions The project will offer novel data regarding the use of the co-design approach for the development of innovative, co-designed interventions. In addition, it will be possible to document the acceptability and feasibility of the pilot intervention with a primary care team. Long-term outcomes among localized prostate cancer survivors: prospective predictors for return-to-work three years after cancer rehabilitation. Support Care Cancer 2022; 30:843-854. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at (1) investigating the work status of men treated by radical prostatectomy due to diagnosis of localized prostate cancer (LPCa) three years after having attended a cancer rehabilitation program and (2) identifying prospective risk factors for not working at this time point. METHODS In a longitudinal, questionnaire-based multicenter study, 519 working-age LPCa survivors reported on their work status 12 and 36 months following rehabilitation. Chi-square tests/t tests and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to identify prospective factors associated with not working at 36 months follow-up. RESULTS Nearly three quarter of LPCa survivors (N = 377, 73%) worked 3 years after post-acute rehabilitation. Most participants (N = 365, 71%) showed continuous return-to-work (RTW) patterns as they worked both 1 and 3 years following rehabilitation. Multivariable regression analysis revealed older age, low or middle socio-economic status as well as resigned and unambitious work behavior and fatigue at the time of attending the rehabilitation program to be prospective factors for not working at 36 months follow-up. Low socio-economic status [Odds ratio (OR) 4.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.07-11.16] and unambitious work behavior [OR 4.48, 95% CI 2.16-9.31] were the strongest predictors. CONCLUSION Long-term work retention is a realistic goal among LPCa survivors. The results contribute to the identification of at-risk LPCa survivors early in the RTW process. Special attention should be paid to social inequality. Further, interventions related to the management of fatigue and work-related coping styles could improve long-term RTW, as these were relevant, but potentially modifiable factors impeding work retention.

Abstract
PURPOSE Continuing employment or returning to work (RTW) as a cancer survivor can be meaningful and financially necessary, yet challenging. However, there is a lack of qualitative research on RTW experiences and financial wellbeing of people with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC-A). This study aimed to fill this gap. METHODS Adults treated for CRC-A were recruited 0.5-2 years post-surgery (or post-diagnosis of CRC-A for palliative chemotherapy participants). Semi-structured telephone interviews, exploring RTW and finances, were subjected to framework analysis. Demographic, clinical, and quality of life data (FACT-C, Distress Thermometer, COST measure) were collected to characterise the sample and inform the framework analysis. RESULTS Analysis of 38 interviews revealed five overarching themes: work as a struggle, work as my identity, work as my saviour, work as a financial necessity, and employer and colleague response. Many survivors with CRC-A desired to, and had the capacity to, continue work or RTW, yet faced unique challenges from compounded stigma of both cancer and toileting issues. Inability to RTW negatively impacted financial and psychosocial wellbeing. Workplace support was an important facilitator of RTW. CONCLUSION For survivors with CRC-A, continuing or RTW is fraught with challenges, including physical functioning challenges, financial anxiety, and unsupportive workplace environments. Survivors require psychosocial, financial, and employer support to manage these difficulties. This paper recommends a multiprong approach, including education programmes (facilitated through workers' union groups, human resource institutions, and/or large consumer CRC groups) and policies, to support workers and for employers to understand the unique challenges of employees with CRC-A.
