Abstract
In diabetes mellitus, disordered glucose and lipid metabolisms precipitate diverse complications, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, contributing to a rising global mortality rate. Theaflavins (TFs) can improve disorders of glycolipid metabolism in diabetic patients and reduce various types of damage, including glucotoxicity, lipotoxicity, and other associated secondary adverse effects. TFs exert effects to lower blood glucose and lipids levels, partly by regulating digestive enzyme activities, activation of OATP-MCT pathway and increasing secretion of incretins such as GIP. By the Ca2+-CaMKK ꞵ-AMPK and PI3K-AKT pathway, TFs promote glucose utilization and inhibit endogenous glucose production. Along with the regulation of energy metabolism by AMPK-SIRT1 pathway, TFs enhance fatty acids oxidation and reduce de novo lipogenesis. As such, the administration of TFs holds significant promise for both the prevention and amelioration of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease remains a preeminent cause of morbidity and mortality globally. The onset of atherosclerosis underpins the emergence of ischemic cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD). Its pathogenesis entails multiple factors such as inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, vascular endothelial damage, foam cell formation, and platelet activation. Furthermore, it triggers the activation of diverse signaling pathways including Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt), NF-E2-related factor 2/antioxidant response element (Nrf2/ARE), the Notch signaling pathway, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR), nucleotide oligo-structural domain-like receptor thermoprotein structural domain-associated protein 3 (NLRP3), silencing information regulator 2-associated enzyme 1 (Sirt1), nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB), Circular RNA (Circ RNA), MicroRNA (mi RNA), Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), and Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT). Over recent decades, therapeutic approaches for atherosclerosis have been dominated by the utilization of high-intensity statins to reduce lipid levels, despite significant adverse effects. Consequently, there is a growing interest in the development of safer and more efficacious drugs and therapeutic modalities. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers a vital strategy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Numerous studies have detailed the mechanisms through which TCM active ingredients modulate signaling molecules and influence the atherosclerotic process. This article reviews the signaling pathways implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and the advancements in research on TCM extracts for prevention and treatment, drawing on original articles from various databases including Google Scholar, Medline, CNKI, Scopus, and Pubmed. The objective is to furnish a reference for the clinical management of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
The vital pathological processes in intimal hyperplasia include aberrant vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) proliferation, migration, and phenotypic switching. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a natural phenolic acid compound. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism of RA in neointimal hyperplasia is still unclear. Our analysis illustrated that miR-25-3p mimics significantly enhanced PDGF-BB-mediated VSMCs proliferation, migration, and phenotypic switching while RA partially weakened the effect of miR-25-3p. Mechanistically, we found that miR-25-3p directly targets sirtuin (SIRT6). The suppressive effect of the miR-25-3p inhibitor on PDGF-BB-induced VSMCs proliferation, migration, and phenotypic switch was partially eliminated by SIRT6 knockdown. The suppression of the PDGF-BB-stimulated Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway that was activated by the miR-25-3p inhibitor was exacerbated by the SIRT6 knockdown. In in vivo experiments, RA reduced the degree of intimal hyperplasia while miR-25-3p agomir partially reversed the suppressive effect of RA in vascular remodeling. Our results indicate that RA activates the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway via the miR-25-3p/SIRT6 axis to inhibit vascular remodeling.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ge Gen Decoction (GGD) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription that originated in the ancient Chinese medical book "Treatise on Febrile Diseases". The prescription consists of 7 herbs: Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, Ephedra sinica Stapf, Cinnamomum cassia (L.) J.Presl, Paeonia lactiflora Pall., Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., Zingiber officinale Rosc., and Ziziphus jujuba Mill. It can alleviate high fever and soreness in the neck and shoulders caused by exogenous wind chill and is widely used in both China and Japan. Currently, GGD is primarily utilized for treating flu and the common cold. GGD has been reported to show significant anti-influenza A virus (IAV) activity both in vitro and in vivo. However, the active ingredients responsible for its anti-influenza properties have not been elucidated, and the mechanisms underlying its anti-influenza effects require further research. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aims to investigate the active ingredients and molecular mechanisms of GGD in treating influenza. MATERIALS AND METHODS HPLC chromatograms were established for GGD water and different polar extracts. The effect of different GGD extracts on pulmonary virus titers and TNFα expression was assessed through RT-PCR analysis. Spectrum-effect relationships between chromatographic peaks of GGD and its virus inhibition rate and TNFα inhibition rate were investigated using partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis. HPLC-Q-TOF-MS was utilized to identify the constituents absorbed into the blood after oral administration of GGD. Network analysis of the absorbed forms of active ingredients was conducted to predict the potential mechanisms of GGD. Subsequently, total SOD activity, CAT and HO-1 expression and Nrf2 nuclear translocation were then analyzed. Finally, the impact of interfering with HO-1 expression on the anti-IAV activity of GGD was examined. RESULTS The study identified 11 anti-influenza active ingredients in GGD, which are daidzein, ononin, genistin, daidzin, 3'-methoxypuerarin, puerarin, pseudoephedrine, paeoniflorin, pormononetin-7-xylosyl-glucoside, penistein-7-O-apiosyl-glucoside, and ephedrine. Network analysis revealed various biological activities of GGD, including responses to ROS and oxidative stress. GGD also involves multiple antiviral pathways, such as hepatitis B, IAV, and Toll-like receptor pathways. Experimental assays demonstrated that GGD possesses independent antioxidant activity both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, GGD inhibits the increase in intracellular ROS induced by IAV. In vivo, it reduces MDA levels and increases total pulmonary SOD activity. Applying siRNA and flow cytometry analysis revealed that GGD alleviates IAV-induced oxidative burst by promoting the expression of HO-1 and CAT. Western blot analysis revealed that GGD effectively promotes Nrf2 nuclear translocation and enhances Nrf2 expression. Furthermore, this study found that the enhancement of HO-1 expression by GGD contributed to its anti-IAV activity. CONCLUSIONS The study identified the active ingredients of GGD against influenza and demonstrated the beneficial role of GGD's antioxidant activity in treating flu. The antioxidant activity of GGD is associated with the promotion of Nrf2 nuclear translocation and the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, HO-1, and CAT. Overall, this study provides evidence supporting the use of GGD as an adjunctive or complementary therapy for influenza.

Abstract
Theaflavins are the characteristic polyphenols in black tea which can be enzymatically synthesized. In this review, the effects and molecular mechanisms of theaflavins on obesity and its comorbidities, including dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, and atherosclerosis, were summarized. Theaflavins ameliorate obesity potentially via reducing food intake, inhibiting pancreatic lipase to reduce lipid absorption, activating the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and regulating the gut microbiota. As to the comorbidities, theaflavins ameliorate hypercholesterolemia by inhibiting micelle formation to reduce cholesterol absorption. Theaflavins improve insulin sensitivity by increasing the signaling of protein kinase B, eliminating glucose toxicity, and inhibiting inflammation. Theaflavins ameliorate hepatic steatosis via activating AMPK. Theaflavins reduce atherosclerosis by upregulating nuclear factor erythropoietin-2-related factor 2 signaling and inhibiting plasminogen activator inhibitor 1. In randomized controlled trails, black tea extracts containing theaflavins reduced body weight in overweight people and improved glucose tolerance in healthy adults. The amelioration on the hyperlipidemia and the prevention of coronary artery disease by black tea extracts were supported by meta-analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis is a deadly consequence of cardiovascular disease and has very high mortality rate worldwide. The epigenetic modifications can regulate the pervasiveness and progression of atherosclerosis through its involvement in regulation of inflammation, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism and several other factors. Specific non-coding RNAs, DNA methylation, and histone modifications are key regulatory factors of atherosclerosis. Natural products from traditional Chinese medicine have shown promising therapeutic potential against atherosclerosis by means of regulating the expression of specific genes, stabilizing arterial plaques and protecting vascular endothelial cells. OBJECTIVE Our study is focusing to explore the pathophysiology and probability of traditional Chinese medicine and natural medicinal active ingredients to treat atherosclerosis. METHODS Comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar and China National Knowledge Infrastructure with a core focus on natural medicinal active ingredients and traditional Chinese medicine prying in epigenetic modification related to atherosclerosis. RESULTS Accumulated evidence demonstrated that natural medicinal active ingredients and traditional Chinese medicine have been widely studied as substances that can regulate epigenetic modification. They can participate in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis through inflammation, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, cell proliferation and migration, macrophage polarization and autophagy respectively. CONCLUSION The function of natural medicinal active ingredients and traditional Chinese medicine in regulating epigenetic modification may provide a new potential strategy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. However, more extensive research is essential to determine the potential of these natural medicinal active ingredients to treat atherosclerosis because of least clinical data.

Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) often induces severe sensory and motor dysfunction. Oxidative stress is an important pathophysiological process of secondary SCI, and its inhibition could facilitate the alleviation of the injury. Resveratrol is a natural plant polyphenol compound that has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It can inhibit oxidative stress by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signal pathway. In this report, we analyze the antioxidant effect of resveratrol in SCI, clarify the specific mechanism of action and provide a theoretical basis for the clinical employment of resveratrol for SCI.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Epidemiological research have displayed that dietary intake rich in lycopene, an antioxidant, is negatively correlated with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to investigate whether the intervention with different concentrations of lycopene could attenuate H2O2-induced oxidative stress injury in human vascular endothelial cells (VECs). METHODS The human VECs HMEC-1 and ECV-304 were incubated with a final concentration of 300 µmol/L H2O2, followed by they were incubated with lycopene at doses of 0.5, 1, or 2 µm. Subsequently, cell proliferation, cytotoxicity, cell adhesion, reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents, adhesion molecule expression, oxidative stress levels, pro-inflammatory factor production, the apoptosis protein levels, and the silent information regulator-1 (SIRT1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway protein levels were tested by CCK-8 kit, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) kit, immunofluorescence labeling, cell surface enzyme immunoassays (EIA), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), as well as Western blot assays, respectively. RESULTS Under H2O2 stimulation, HMEC-1 and ECV-304 cell proliferation and the SIRT1/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway protein expression were significantly reduced, whereas cytotoxicity, apoptosis, cell adhesion molecule expression, pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress factors production were apparently encouraged, which were partially countered by lycopene intervention in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION Lycopene alleviates H2O2-induced oxidative damage in human VECs by reducing intracellular ROS levels, inflammatory factor production, cell adhesiveness, and apoptosis rate under oxidative stress conditions through activation of the SIRT1/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Abstract
With the growing awareness of a healthy life, tea pigments (TPGs) are in focus for their health benefits. TPGs not only provide specific color to tea liquor but also possess health benefits such as anti-obesity, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-oxidative, and bacteriostatic properties. Also, TPGs can benefit bone, liver, kidney, cardiovascular, gut microbiome, and sleep health. Based on previous reports, this review provides a brief introduction to the health benefits of TPGs, focusing on the prevention of human diseases and the protection of organs. Also, the latest research on the functional mechanism(s), practical application, and development strategies of TPGs is discussed.

Abstract
Activation of NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome plays important role in defending against infections, but its aberrant activation is causally linked to many inflammatory diseases, thus being a therapeutic target for these diseases. Theaflavin, one major ingredient of black tea, exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of theaflavin against NLRP3 inflammasome activation in macrophages in vitro and in animal models of related diseases. We showed that theaflavin (50, 100, 200 μM) dose-dependently inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation in LPS-primed macrophages stimulated with ATP, nigericin or monosodium urate crystals (MSU), evidenced by reduced release of caspase-1p10 and mature interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Theaflavin treatment also inhibited pyroptosis as shown by decreased generation of N-terminal fragment of gasdermin D (GSDMD-NT) and propidium iodide incorporation. Consistent with these, theaflavin treatment suppressed ASC speck formation and oligomerization in macrophages stimulated with ATP or nigericin, suggesting reduced inflammasome assembly. We revealed that theaflavin-induced inhibition on NLRP3 inflammasome assembly and pyroptosis resulted from ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced mitochondrial ROS production, thereby suppressing interaction between NLRP3 and NEK7 downstream of ROS. Moreover, we showed that oral administration of theaflavin significantly attenuated MSU-induced mouse peritonitis and improved the survival of mice with bacterial sepsis. Consistently, theaflavin administration significantly reduced serum levels of inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β and attenuated liver inflammation and renal injury of mice with sepsis, concomitant with reduced generation of caspase-1p10 and GSDMD-NT in the liver and kidney. Together, we demonstrate that theaflavin suppresses NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis by protecting mitochondrial function, thus mitigating acute gouty peritonitis and bacterial sepsis in mice, highlighting a potential application in treating NLRP3 inflammasome-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Xin-tong-tai Granule (XTTG), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat atherosclerosis (AS), but its mechanism is poorly understood. Intriguingly, oxidative stress has been recognized as vital factors in the treatment of atherosclerosis. PURPOSE This study aims to explore the potential mechanism of XTTG for treating AS. METHODS An in-vivo model of AS was established by feeding ApoE-/- mice with a high-fat diet (HFD), and the Human Aortic Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (HAVSMCs) were induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in vitro. After treatment, the blood lipid levels and pathological aortic changes of each group were observed, and the cell proliferation and lipid droplet aggregation in each group were evaluated. The oxidative stress indicators such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels and related NOX/ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway indicators were observed. RESULTS XTTG improved blood lipid levels and pathological aortic changes of ApoE-/- mice with HFD feeding, inhibited HAVSMCs proliferation and lipid droplet aggregation induced by ox-LDL, reduced MDA content, increased SOD content, inhibited NOX4 and p22phox protein expression, downregulated ROS content, inhibited IKK-α, IKK-β, NF-κB protein and mRNA expression and the phosphorylation of NF-κB. CONCLUSION XTTG can inhibit NOX/ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway, reduce damages caused by oxidative stress, and exert anti-AS effects.

Abstract
Obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases are the major chronic metabolic diseases that threaten human health. In order to combat these epidemics, there remains a desperate need for effective, safe, and easily available therapeutic strategies. Recently, the development of natural product research has provided new methods and options for these diseases. Numerous studies have demonstrated that microRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of metabolic diseases, and natural products can improve lipid and glucose metabolism disorders and cardiovascular diseases by regulating the expression of miRNAs. In this review, we present the recent advances involving the associations between miRNAs and natural products and the current evidence showing the positive effects of miRNAs for natural product treatment in metabolic diseases. We also encourage further research to address the relationship between miRNAs and natural products under physiological and pathological conditions, thus leading to stronger support for drug development from natural products in the future.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis (AS)-induced cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. To date, there is still a lack of effective approaches for AS intervention. Cardamonin (CAD) is a bioactive food component, but its effect on AS is unknown. In this work, CAD was investigated for its effect on AS using low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout mice and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-stimulated endothelial cells (ECs). After a 12-week intervention, CAD was found to significantly prevent AS formation in the aortic root and aortic tree, reduce the necrotic core area, and inhibit aortic inflammation and oxidative stress. Moreover, CAD quenched TNF-α-provoked inflammation and oxidative stress in ECs. RNA-sequencing identified nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (NFE2L2, NRF2)/heme oxidase 1 (HO1) signaling to be drastically activated by CAD. CAD is a known activator of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) which is a transcription factor of the NFE2L2 gene. Surprisingly, AHR was not required for CAD's action on the activation of NRF2/HO1 signaling since AHR gene silencing did not reverse this effect. Furthermore, a molecular docking assay showed a strong binding potential of CAD to the Kelch domain of the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1) which sequesters NRF2 in the cytoplasm. Both CAD and the Kelch domain inhibitor Ki696 promoted NRF2 nuclear translocation, whereas the combination of CAD and Ki696 did not yield a greater effect compared with either CAD or Ki696, confirming the interaction of CAD with the Kelch domain. This work provides an experimental basis for CAD as a novel and effective bioactive food component in future AS interventions.

Abstract
Many health problems including chronic diseases are closely associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Tea has abundant phenolic compounds with various health benefits including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This review focuses on the present understanding of the impact of tea phenolic compounds on the expression of miRNAs, and elucidates the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying the transcriptional and post-transcriptional protective actions of tea phenolic compounds against oxidative stress- and/or inflammation-mediated diseases. Clinical studies showed that drinking tea or taking catechin supplement on a daily basis promoted the endogenous antioxidant defense system of the body while inhibiting inflammatory factors. The regulation of chronic diseases based on epigenetic mechanisms, and the epigenetic-based therapies involving different tea phenolic compounds, have been insufficiently studied. The molecular mechanisms and application strategies of miR-27 and miR-34 involved in oxidative stress response and miR-126 and miR-146 involved in inflammation process were preliminarily investigated. Some emerging evidence suggests that tea phenolic compounds may promote epigenetic changes, involving non-coding RNA regulation, DNA methylation, histone modification, ubiquitin and SUMO modifications. However, epigenetic mechanisms and epigenetic-based disease therapies involving phenolic compounds from different teas, and the potential cross-talks among the epigenetic events, remain understudied.

Abstract
High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity leads endothelial dysfunction and contributes to cardiovascular diseases. Palmitic acid (PA), a free fatty acid, is the main component of dietary saturated fat. Physcion, a chemical ingredient from Rhubarb, has been shown anti-hypertensive, anti-bacteria, and anti-tumor properties. However, the effects of physcion on endothelial dysfunction under HFD-induced obesity have not been reported. The purpose of the present study was to define the protective effect of physcion on HFD-induced endothelial dysfunction and its mechanisms involved. Obesity rat model was induced by HFD for 12 weeks. A rat thoracic aortic ring model was used to investigate the effects of physcion on HFD-induced impairment of vasorelaxation. Endothelial cell injury model was constructed in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by treating with PA (0.25 mM) for 24 h. The results revealed that physcion reduced body weight and the levels of plasma TG, prevented impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation in HFD-fed rats. In PA-injured HUVECs, physcion inhibited impaired viability, apoptosis and inflammation. Physcion also suppressed PA-induced both oxidative stress and ER stress in HUVECs. Furthermore, physcion increased PA-induced decrease in the activation of eNOS/Nrf2 signaling in HUVECs. These findings suggest that physcion has a significant beneficial effect on regulating HFD-induced endothelial dysfunction, which may be related to the inhibition of oxidative stress and ER stress through activation of eNOS/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is presently the largest international public health event, individuals infected by the virus not only have symptoms such as fever, dry cough, and lung infection at the time of onset, but also possibly have sequelae in the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, nervous system, mental health and other aspects. However, numerous studies have depicted that the active ingredients in tea show good antiviral effects and can treat various diseases by regulating multiple pathways, and the therapeutic effects are associated with the categories of chemical components in tea. In this review, the differences in the content of key active ingredients in different types of tea are summarized. In addition, we also highlighted their effects on COVID-19 and connected sequelae, further demonstrating the possibility of developing a formulation for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and its sequelae through tea extracts. We have a tendency to suggest forestalling and treating COVID-19 and its sequelae through scientific tea drinking.

Abstract
Tea has long been valued for its health benefits, especially its potential to prevent and treat atherosclerosis (AS). Abnormal lipid metabolism and oxidative stress are major factors that contribute to the development of AS. Tea, which originated in China, is believed to help prevent AS. Research has shown that tea is rich in catechins, which is considered a potential source of natural antioxidants. Catechins are the most abundant antioxidants in green tea, and are considered to be the main compound responsible for tea's antioxidant activity. The antioxidant properties of catechins are largely dependent on the structure of molecules, and the number and location of hydroxyl groups or their substituents. As an exogenous antioxidant, catechins can effectively eliminate lipid peroxidation products. They can also play an antioxidant role indirectly by activating the endogenous antioxidant system by regulating enzyme activity and signaling pathways. In this review, we summarized the preventive effect of catechin in AS, and emphasized that improving the antioxidant effect and lipid metabolism disorders of catechins is the key to managing AS.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis (AS) is a prevalent arteriosclerotic vascular disease that forms a pathological basis for coronary heart disease, stroke, and other diseases. Inflammatory and oxidative stress responses occur throughout the development of AS. Treatment for AS over the past few decades has focused on administering high-intensity statins to reduce blood lipid levels, but these inevitably damage liver and kidney function over the long term. Natural medicines are widely used to prevent and treat AS in China because of their wide range of beneficial effects, low toxicity, and minimal side effects. We searched for relevant literature over the past 5 years in databases such as PubMed using the keywords, “atherosclerosis,” “traditional Chinese medicine,” “natural medicines,” “inflammation,” and “oxidative stress.” We found that the PI3K/AKT, TLR4, JAK/STAT, Nrf2, MAPK, and NF-κB are the most relevant inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways in AS. This review summarizes studies of the natural alkaloid, flavonoid, polyphenol, saponin, and quinone pathways through which natural medicines used to treat AS. This study aimed to update and summarize progress in understanding how natural medicines treat AS via inflammatory and oxidative stress-related signaling pathways. We also planned to create an information base for the development of novel drugs for future AS treatment.

Abstract
Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a transcription factor, controls the expression of more than 1000 genes that can be clustered into different categories with distinct functions ranging from redox balance and metabolism to protein quality control in the cell. The biological consequence of Nrf2 activation can be either protective or detrimental in a context-dependent manner. In the cardiovascular system, most studies have focused on the protective properties of Nrf2, mainly as a key transcription factor of antioxidant defense. However, emerging evidence revealed an unexpected role of Nrf2 in mediating cardiovascular maladaptive remodeling and dysfunction in certain disease settings. Herein we review the role of Nrf2 in cardiovascular diseases with a focus on vascular disease. We discuss the negative effect of Nrf2 on the vasculature as well as the potential underlying mechanisms. We also discuss the clinical relevance of targeting Nrf2 pathways for the treatment of cardiovascular and other diseases.

Abstract
In recent years, many natural foods and herbs rich in phytochemicals have been proposed as health supplements for patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Theaflavins (TFs) are a polyphenol hydroxyl substance with the structure of diphenol ketone, and they have the potential to prevent and treat a wide range of MetS. However, the stability and bioavailability of TFs are poor. TFs have the marvelous ability to alleviate MetS through antiobesity and lipid-lowering (AMPK-FoxO3A-MnSOD, PPAR, AMPK, PI3K/Akt), hypoglycemic (IRS-1/Akt/GLUT4, Ca2+/CaMKK2-AMPK, SGLT1), and uric-acid-lowering (XO, GLUT9, OAT) effects, and the modulation of the gut microbiota (increasing beneficial gut microbiota such as Akkermansia and Prevotella). This paper summarizes and updates the bioavailability of TFs, and the available signaling pathways and molecular evidence on the functionalities of TFs against metabolic abnormalities in vitro and in vivo, representing a promising opportunity to prevent MetS in the future with the utilization of TFs.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic disease that threatens human health. Tea is a healthy beverage with an abundance of benefits. This study revealed the uric acid-lowering efficacy of six types of tea water extracts (TWEs) on HUA in mice. The results revealed that under the intervention of TWEs, the expression of XDH, a key enzyme that produces uric acid, was significantly downregulated in the liver. TWE treatment significantly upregulated the expression of uric acid secretion transporters ABCG2, OAT1, and OAT3, and downregulated the expression of uric acid reabsorption transporter URAT1 in the kidney. Furthermore, HUA-induced oxidative stress could be alleviated by upregulating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. The intervention of TWEs also significantly upregulated the expression of the intestinal ABCG2 protein. On the other hand, TWE intervention could significantly upregulate the expression of intestinal ABCG2 and alleviate HUA by modulating the gut microbiota. Taken together, tea can comprehensively regulate uric acid metabolism in HUA mice. Interestingly, we found that the degree of fermentation of tea was negatively correlated with the uric acid-lowering effect. The current study indicated that tea consumption may have a mitigating effect on the HUA population and provided a basis for further research on the efficacy of tea on the dosage and mechanism of uric acid-lowering effects in humans.

Abstract
The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing globally, being the most widespread form of chronic liver disease in the west. NAFLD includes a variety of disease states, the mildest being non-alcoholic fatty liver that gradually progresses to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually hepatocellular carcinoma. Small non-coding single-stranded microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression at the miRNA or translational level. Numerous miRNAs have been shown to promote NAFLD pathogenesis and progression through increasing lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and inflammation. The miR-23-27-24 clusters, composed of miR-23a-27a-24-2 and miR-23b-27b-24-1, have been implicated in various biological processes as well as many diseases. Herein, we review the current knowledge on miR-27, miR-24, and miR-23 in NAFLD pathogenesis and discuss their potential significance in NAFLD diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract
Keratinocytes are rich in lipids and are the main sensitive cells to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Theaflavins are the core functional components of black tea and are known as the "soft gold" in tea. In this study, ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiation caused apoptosis and necrosis of human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT). EGCG and the four theaflavins had anti-UVB damage activity, among which theaflavin-3'-gallate (TF3'G) had the best activity. The results of biophysical and molecular biology experiments showed that TF3'G has anti-damage effects on UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells through the dual effects of photoprotection and maintenance of cell homeostasis. That is, TF3'G preincubation could absorb UV rays, reduce the accumulation of aging-related heterochromatin (SAHF) formation, increase mitochondrial membrane potential, downregulate NF-κB inflammation pathways, inhibit the formation of cytotoxic aggregates, and protect biological macromolecules Structure, etc. The accumulation of conjugated π bonds and the balance benzoquinone are the core functional structure of TF3'G with high efficiency and low toxicity. The study indicates that TF3'G has the potential to inhibit the photoaging and intrinsic aging of skin cells.
