Abstract
Changes in the neurotransmitters are indications for several diseases. Several sensors were reported for monitoring dopamine (DA), but the simple and accurate DA detection in biological samples still faces many challenges. The research proposal aims to develop an optical sensor for detecting neurotransmitters based on luminescence emission spectra in different biological samples. Carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated based on a green synthesis route. Then the prepared CDs were decorated with varying concentrations of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The synthesis process was optimized, and the obtained CDs/Au NPs nanocomposites were applied as neurotransmitters' optical nanosensors. The optical nanosensor approach provides easy and sensitive multiplex analysis. A wide range of neurotransmitters was monitored. The developed sensor's sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility were investigated. Au NPs act as CDs' stabilizers, enhancing the emission effect, and scaffolds for binding DA with CDs' surface. DA moieties bind to CDs through the interaction between the DA-NH2 groups and Au NPS. Due to electron transfer, the bonding of DA molecules leads to fluorescence quenching of AuNPs/CDs. The Au-CDs-based DA fluorescence showed high sensitivity with adetection limit, and limit quantification of 2.04 nM and 6.18 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the selectivity of the sensor was investigated in the presence of glucose, uric acid (UA), and ascorbic acid (AA), which showed no interference effect at 10 times higher concentrations. Moreover, the proposed sensor has been successfully utilized for DA detection in human serum samples with a high recovery efficiency between 98.83 % and 103.5 %.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reliable and selective detection of dopamine is crucial for the early diagnosis of various diseases. Transition metal based-nanozymes have shown great promise in the field of colorimetric detection of dopamine due to their remarkable stability and exceptional catalytic efficiency. However, these transition metal-based nanozymes typically function through a chromogenic reaction that relies on additional organic substrates, such as 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, to generate a detectable signal. The presence of various co-existing substances can cause serious disturbances due to their possibly similar oxidation potentials. RESULTS In this study, we proposed a 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine-free strategy based on the self-signal of dopamine to achieve reliable and selective detection. CoFe2O4 nanozymes with catalase-like activity was selected as a catalyst to accelerate the polymerization of dopamine to reduce the reaction time and harsh conditions required for its self-polymerization. As neither ascorbic acid nor uric acid can be oxidized into colored products, the 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine-free sensor provides superior selectivity and effectiveness compared with the most 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine-used sensor. The proposed strategy enabled quantitative detection of dopamine within a range of 5-80 μM, with a detection limit of 0.233 μM (R2 = 0.998). The limit of quantitation was 10.6 μM, and the method demonstrated a precision of 2.04 %. The recovery percentage for dopamine ranges from 97.0 % to 106 %. SIGNIFICANCE The proposed 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine-free strategy offers a versatile approach for dopamine monitoring with high specificity and stability in bioanalytical applications. In addition, the strategy proposed by us also offers a rational framework for designing and fabricating highly selective sensors, thereby broadening the application of the nanozymes with catalase-like activity in bioanalysis.

Abstract
Catalytically active nanomaterials, or nanozymes, have gained significant attention as alternatives to natural enzymes due to their low cost, ease of preparation, and enhanced stability. Because of easy preparation, excellent biocompatibility, and unique optoelectronic properties, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted increasing attention in many fields, including nanozymes. In this work, we demonstrated the applicability of beta-cyclodextrin functionalized gold nanoparticles (β-CD-AuNPs) as enzyme mimics for different substances, including TMB and DA. We found that β-CD-AuNPs can catalyze the H2O2-mediated oxidation of DA. The dopamine signal-off sensor was developed by taking advantage of the peroxidase-like activity of β-CD-AuNPs towards TMB and DA, where both 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and dopamine (DA) may compete for the binding sites with β-CD-AuNPs. As a result, the presence of dopamine can be detected even through the naked eye (up to the concentration of 3.75 µM) and using a spectrophotometer (up to the concentration of 1.0 µM) by monitoring the disappearance of the blue color of the oxidized form of TMB in the presence of dopamine. Furthermore, no obvious disappearance of color was observed at lower concentrations of interferences including ascorbic and uric acid. Given the versatility of cyclodextrin to host large numbers of analyte molecules, we envision that a similar principle can be applied for the detection of other analyte molecules of biological, medical, and environmental significance.

Abstract
Supramolecular interactions play an important role in molecular recognition. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are excellent hosts that are frequently utilized in the identification of chemical compounds. Proper modifications to CD can give it the ability to accurately recognize specific molecules. In this research, CD was modified with the allylimidazole moiety to generate a synergistic effect. Remarkably, the newly formed cation probe exhibits selective recognition of 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid from six guest molecules, which cannot be achieved by CD or allylimidazole alone. The recognition is evidenced by the retention of hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) properties in the formed complexes and a change in the chemical shift of protons (H-4, H-5) in the allylimidazol backbone. Wavefunction analysis was employed to demonstrate that the mechanism of molecular recognition is the electrostatic interaction between host and guest molecules as well as the hydrogen bond formed by the guest molecule with the imidazole moiety H-2. This work reports an intramolecular synergistic strategy to specifically identify 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid, which could inspire probe design for various analysts.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is catecholamine neurotransmitters that play an important role in the central nervous system. In recent years people started to intentionally add DA to animal feed to enhance muscle development and increase their profit margin. Human consumption of the residual DA from animal tissues has been reported to be associated with the development of such diseases as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, senile dementia, and schizophrenia and pose serious human health risks. These require development of rapid, cheap, and sensitive methods for detection of DA from animal tissue. Compared to other techniques that require access to expensive instruments, skilled human power, and tiresome routine procedures, colorimetric methods provide cheap and reliable options for detection of DA. Here we report a colorimetric method based on the peroxidase-mimic activity of Fe3O4@C@AgNPs for the detection of DA. A simple wet chemical method was employed to synthesize AgNPs on hydrophilic carbon coated Fe3O4. The produced nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The detection of DA was done based on inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4@C@AgNPs using 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a substrate. In the presence of DA, however, the peroxidase-like activity started to decrease. The decrease in activity was concentration dependent showing a linear relationship in the range of 0.5-80 µM. In this linear range, the limit of detection (LOD) was computed and found to be as low as 0.12 µM. Therefore, we propose that the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4@C@AgNPs could be used for quantitative detection of DA from different samples.

Abstract
In this study, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) electrochemical sensor based on poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)/chitosan/Au (PProDOT/CS/Au) composite modification was designed for highly sensitive and selective detection of TC. Green synthesis of CS/Au without the use of reducing agents, followed by in-situ oxidation polymerization of PProDOT. The high electrochemical activity and high stability of PProDOT, the numerous functional groups (-OH, -NH2) of CS, and the excellent electron transport capacity of AuNPs, which provided a suitable incubation chamber for the production of imprinted cavities. Meanwhile, combined with the specific recognition ability of MIP, it showed superior performance over bare glassy carbon electrodes. Under the optimal experimental conditions, this sensor showed good linearity for TC in the concentration ranges of 0.0001-100 μM, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.19 nM. At the same time, the sensor exhibited satisfactory selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. It was evident from the results of the study that the sensor designed in this paper showed considerable potential for application in the detection of TC in pharmaceuticals, the environment, and food samples.

Abstract
Conventional methods for detecting unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) pose challenges for rapid analyses due to the need for complex pretreatment and expensive instruments. Here, we developed an intelligent platform for facile and low-cost analysis of UFAs by combining a smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensor array (CSA) based on MnO2 nanozymes with "image segmentation-feature extraction" deep learning (ISFE-DL). Density functional theory predictions were validated by doping experiments using Ag, Pd, and Pt, which enhanced the catalytic activity of the MnO2 nanozymes. A CSA mimicking mammalian olfactory system was constructed with the principle that UFAs competitively inhibit the oxidization of the enzyme substrate, resulting in color changes in the nanozyme-ABTS substrate system. Through linear discriminant analysis coupled with the smartphone App "Quick Viewer" that utilizes multihole parallel acquisition technology, oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA), and their mixtures were clearly discriminated; various edible vegetable oils, different camellia oils (CAO), and adulterated CAOs were also successfully distinguished. Furthermore, the ISFE-DL method was combined in multicomponent quantitative analysis. The sensing elements of the CSA (3 × 4) were individually segmented for single-hole feature extraction containing information from 38,868 images of three UFAs, thereby allowing for the extraction of more features and augmenting sample size. After training with the MobileNetV3 small model, the determination coefficients of OA, LA, and ALA were 0.9969, 0.9668, and 0.7393, respectively. The model was embedded in the smartphone App "Intelligent Analysis Master" for one-click quantification. We provide an innovative approach for intelligent and efficient qualitative and quantitative analysis of UFAs and other compounds with similar characteristics.

Abstract
Emerging technology in the new era of sensors to detect and quantify neurological reaction-based research has demanded the development of sensors for the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA). In recent decades, electrochemical sensors have offered rapid and sensitive detection of DA, but the presence of interfering compounds, such as uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA), poses a great threat to the development of DA sensors. Additionally, reusing traditional methods leads to challenges like prolonged preparation and expensive instruments. This research work offers a nanohybrid two-dimensional (2D) paper-like graphene oxide (GO) and three-dimensional (3D) cerium oxide nanosphere (CeONS) heterostructure composite (G-CeONS) created via stoichiometric synthesis for the non-enzymatic detection of DA oxidation in the presence of other complex biological compounds. The constructed G-CeONS nanohybrid composite enables enhanced selectivity and sensitivity towards DA detection through its interfacial engineering. The heterostructure formation of a 2D nanosheet draped over 3D nanospheres exhibits a wide linear concentration range of 100-30 800 nM with a low detection limit of 20.98 nM. Further investigation of the real-time performance on human saliva and DA injections afforded prominent results. In addition, the synergetic effect of G-CeONS improves DA detection accuracy and reliability towards enabling transformational neurochemical and medicinal applications.

Abstract
Wax printing is the most widely used method for fabricating microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), but it still suffers from disadvantages like discontinuation of wax printers and need for additional equipment for heating treatment. To address these issues, this work initially describes a new class of wax printing approach for high-precision, batch fabrication of μPADs using a household 3D printer. It only involves a one patterning step of printing polyethylene wax into rice paper body. Under optimized parameters, a fabrication resolution, namely the minimum hydrophilic channel width, down to ~189 ± 30 μm could be achieved. In addition, the analytical applicability of such polyethylene wax-patterned μPADs was demonstrated well with enhanced colorimetric detection of dopamine as a model analyte by combining metal-organic framework (MOF) based nanoenzymes (ZIF-67) with a smartphone (for portable quantitative readout). The developed nanosensor could linearly detect dopamine over a concentration range from 10 to 1000 μM, with a detection limit of ca. 2.75 μM (3σ). The recovery results for analyzing several real samples (i.e., pig feed, chicken feed, pork and human serum) were between 91.82 and 102.79%, further validating its good detection accuracy for potential practical applications in food safety and medical diagnosis.

Abstract
The peroxidase-like behaviors of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have the potential to the development of rapid and sensitive colorimetric assays for specific food ingredients and contaminants. Here, using NaBH4 as a reducing agent, AuNPs with a supramolecular macrocyclic compound β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) capped were synthesized under alkaline conditions. Monodispersal of β-CD@AuNPs possessed a reduction in diameter size and performed great peroxidase-like activities toward both substrates, H2O2 and TMB. In the presence of H2O2, the color change of TMB oxidization to oxTMB was well-achieved using β-CD@AuNPs as the catalyst, which was further employed to develop colorimetric assays for ascorbic acid, with a limit of detection as low as 0.2 μM in ddH2O. With the help of the host-guest interaction between β-CD and adamantane, AuNPs conjugated with nanobodies to exhibit peroxidase-like activities and specific recognition against Salmonella Typhimurium simultaneously. Based on this bifunctional bioprobe, a selective and sensitive one-step colorimetric assay for S. Typhimurium was developed with a linear detection from 8.3 × 104 to 2.6 × 108 CFU/mL and can be provided to spiked lettuce with acceptable recoveries of 97.31% to 103.29%. The results demonstrated that the excellent peroxidase-like behaviors of β-CD@AuNPs can be applied to develop a colorimetric sensing platform in the food industry.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA), as one of the most significant neurotransmitters, is closely related to several diseases. Achieving rapid and sensitive detection of DA remains a challenge. Herein, we proposed a simple, fast, and sensitive method for DA recognition based on surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) technique. The synthesized silver nanoparticles coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (AgNPs@PVP) with oxidase activity could not only oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) directly to produce a blue oxidation state TMB (oxTMB) but also could be used as the SERS substrate to generate a strong SERRS signal. When DA was added to the above system, the blue color faded along with the decrease in the SERRS signal. The change value of SERRS intensity was in proportion to the concentration of DA in the range of 0.1-10 μM with a limit of detection of 40 nM. This method presented great potential for the recognition of DA-related diseases.

Abstract
Nanogels open up access to a wide range of applications and offer among others hopeful approaches for use in the field of biomedicine. This review provides a brief overview of current developments of nanogels in general, particularly in the fields of drug delivery, therapeutic applications, tissue engineering, and sensor systems. Specifically, cyclodextrin (CD)-based nanogels are important because they have exceptional complexation properties and are highly biocompatible. Nanogels as a whole and CD-based nanogels in particular can be customized in a wide range of sizes and equipped with a desired surface charge as well as containing additional molecules inside and outside, such as dyes, solubility-mediating groups or even biological vector molecules for pharmaceutical targeting. Currently, biological investigations are mainly carried out in vitro, but more and more in vivo applications are gaining importance. Modern molecular imaging methods are increasingly being used for the latter. Due to an extremely high sensitivity and the possibility of obtaining quantitative data on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, nuclear methods such as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) using radiolabeled compounds are particularly suitable here. The use of radiolabeled nanogels for imaging, but also for therapy, is being discussed.

Abstract
Field-effect transistor-based biosensors have gained increasing interest due to their reactive surface to external stimuli and the adaptive feedback required for advanced sensing platforms in biohybrid neural interfaces. However, complex probing methods for surface functionalization remain a challenge that limits the industrial implementation of such devices. Herein, a simple, label-free biosensor based on molybdenum oxide (MoO3) with dopamine-regulated plasticity is demonstrated. Dopamine oxidation facilitated locally at the channel surface initiates a charge transfer mechanism between the molecule and the oxide, altering the channel conductance and successfully emulating the tunable synaptic weight by neurotransmitter activity. The oxygen level of the channel is shown to heavily affect the device's electrochemical properties, shifting from a nonreactive metallic characteristic to highly responsive semiconducting behavior. Controllable responsivity is achieved by optimizing the channel's dimension, which allows the devices to operate in wide ranges of dopamine concentration, from 100 nM to sub-mM levels, with excellent selectivity compared with K+, Na+, and Ca2+.

Abstract
Introduction: Dopamine is one of the most significant neurotransmitters and plays an important role in the management of cognitive functions such as learning, memory, and behavior. The disorder of dopamine is associated with many major mental diseases. It is necessary to develop selective methods for the detection of dopamine. Methods: In this work, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by a solvothermal route using glutathione, L-histidine, and formamide as sources. Results: Under light irradiation, The CDs convert dissolved oxygen to singlet oxygen (1O2), which could oxidize TMB. When reduced dopamine was present, it suppressed the catalysis of CDs, then the absorption of the CDs-coupled TMB complex at 652 nm was diminished. Furthermore, it was revealed that the surface groups including hydroxyl, amino, carbonyl, and carboxyl groups of CDs were related to their light-responsive catalytic activity by surface modification. In the range of 0.5-15 μM, the CDs could afford a LOD of 0.25 μM for dopamine detection with fine linearity, also showing good selectivity. Discussion: The results from fetal bovine serum indicated the good applicability of the CDs in the determination of dopamine.

Abstract
Small biomolecules play a critical role in the fundamental processes that sustain life and are essential for the proper functioning of the human body. The detection of small biomolecules has garnered significant interest in various fields, including disease diagnosis and medicine. Electrochemical techniques are commonly employed in the detection of critical biomolecules through the principle of redox reactions. It is also a very convenient, cheap, simple, fast, and accurate measurement method in analytical chemistry. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a unique type of metal-organic framework (MOF) composed of porous crystals with extended three-dimensional structures. These frameworks are made up of metal ions and imidazolate linkers, which form a highly porous and stable structure. In addition to their many advantages in other applications, ZIFs have emerged as promising candidates for electrochemical sensors. Their large surface area, pore diameter, and stability make them ideal for use in sensing applications, particularly in the detection of small molecules and ions. This review summarizes the critical role of small biomolecules in the human body, the standard features of electrochemical analysis, and the utilization of various types of ZIF materials (including carbon composites, metal-based composites, ZIF polymer materials, and ZIF-derived materials) for the detection of important small biomolecules in human body fluids. Lastly, we provide an overview of the current status, challenges, and future outlook for research on ZIF materials.

Abstract
Constructing simple, stable, fast, and sensitive neurotransmitter-based sensors is a promising tool to diagnose neurological diseases. Dopamine (DA), "a catecholamine neurotransmitter" is important in transmitting nerve impulses. Therefore, great attention is taken to monitor DA concentrations received. The challenge in developing a DA-based sensor is to enhance its stability and sensitivity. Thus, we have used o-phthalaldehyde (OPA)/2-mercapto ethanol (2ME)/mesoporous silica instated of 2ME in solution. Here we have successfully developed a fluorescence DA neurotransmitters sensor. The sensor was used for detecting a wide range of concentrations of DA (5 nM to 5 µM). Effects of pH (4.3-11.4) and temperatures (25-70 °C) on the sensor efficiency were investigated. The detection limit was 1.35 × 10-11 mol/dm3, which is lower than the normal DA level in the central nervous system. The results indicated that using OPA/2ME/MSNPs has long-time stability over a year of its preparation. Moreover, the developed sensor showed high specificity towards DA in the presence of different interferences such as ascorbic acid or another catecholamine neurotransmitter such as γ-aminobutyric acid. Finally, the fabricated biosensor was used to monitor the DA neurotransmitter released from PC12 cells. Hence, it was successfully developed a simple and stable probe for accurate photoluminescence detection of DA neurotransmitters.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of boronate affinity materials that show high efficiency, high selectivity, and high enrichment performance have gained significant attention. The principle of boronate affinity relies on the reversible covalent reactions, including the formation of stable five-membered or six-membered cyclic esters with cis-diol-containing compounds in alkaline aqueous media and dissociation of cyclic esters in an acidic surrounding to release cis-diol-containing compounds. Recently, various boronate affinity materials have been synthesized and utilized for selective enrichment of these compounds. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely used in chromatographic separation and sample pretreatment because of their adjustable pore size, high porosity, high specific surface area, tunable skeleton structure, and favorable chemical and thermal stability. To promote the enrichment selectivity of MOFs and COFs for cis-diol-containing compounds, boronic acid-functionalized MOFs and COFs with various structures and categories have been synthesized. This review summarizes more than 80 investigations into the categories, synthetic strategies, and applications of boronic acid-functionalized MOFs and COFs from the Science Citation Index. These synthesis methods include metal ligand-fragment co-assembly, post-synthetic modification, and bottom-up modification of boronic acid-functionalized porous materials. Although two modification strategies (post-synthetic and metal ligand-fragment co-assembly) have been introduced for the preparation of boronic acid-functionalized MOFs, the latter is more commonly adopted as it improves the enrichment selectivity and enrichment efficiency of MOFs. The common limitations of MOFs such as aggregation and aperture issues were also resolved. Boron affinity MOFs possessing favorable properties according to the characteristics of cis-diol-containing compounds, have also been synthesized. Furthermore, to facilitate enrichment and separation, many boronic acid-functionalized magnetic material MOFs have been developed for the enrichment and analysis of cis-diol-containing compounds. Additionally, the luminescent properties of Ln-MOFs have been used in combination with boronic acid affinity for the enrichment, separation, and subsequent detection of cis-diol-containing compounds. Post-synthetic modification and the bottom-up strategy are the primary methods for the preparation of boronic acid-functionalized COFs. Boronic acid-functionalized COFs are less investigated than boronic acid-functionalized MOFs, likely due to the greater complexity of COF synthesis. This work aims to summarize the research advances, synthesis ideas, and synthesis methods related to boric acid-functionalized porous organic frameworks, which will provide theoretical guidance and technical support for its applications while accelerating the commercialization of such organic frameworks.

Abstract
The fabrication of 2D materials and polymer-based nanocomposites deposited on flexible conductive interfaces has unblocked new horizons to expedite reaction kinetics for developing highly selective and sensitive electrochemical biosensors. Herein, we developed a novel biosensing platform, comprising graphene oxide and a silk fibroin-based nanocomposite, drop-cast on a carbon cloth electrode. The fabricated interface was expected to be a robust and miniaturized sensing platform for precise detection of dopamine (DA). Characterization was performed by SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, UV-visible spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, fluorescence spectroscopy, particle size, and zeta potential analysis. CV, EIS, DPV, and chronoamperometry demonstrated the superior electrochemical properties of the working interface and revealed its enhanced active surface area, increased conductivity, and accelerated electron transfer rate. The designed interface exhibited low LoD (0.41 μM), admirable stability, good sensitivity (2.46 μA μM-1 cm-2), wide linearity ranging from 100-900 μM, excellent reproducibility, and superb selectivity against dopamine even in the presence of possible interfering analytes. These findings endorse the feasibility of the practical execution of such an integrated system in real sample analysis.

Abstract
Magnetic polydopamine (PDA) nanocomposites were prepared with a facile and sustainable synthetic method. The as-synthesized polymer-based hybrid composites inherited the intrinsic adhesiveness contributed by catechol and amino moieties of PDA as well as the magnetic property of Fe3O4. With the unique properties of PDA, the surface charges of Fe3O4@PDA could be easily tuned by pH for smart adsorption-desorption behaviors. Four commercially available dyestuffs including crystal violet, rhodamine B, direct blue 71 and orange G with different structures and surface charges in solution were selected to investigate the adsorption ability and universality of Fe3O4@PDA in wastewater treatment. It was found that the nanocomposites could successfully adsorb these cationic and anionic dyes under suitable pH conditions. This confirmed the ability of the nanoadsorbents for the removal of common textile dyes. The dispersed magnetic nanoadsorbents also demonstrated the ease of collection from dye mixtures, and the possibility of reusing them for several cycles. Selective dye separation was found to be achievable via simple charge control without large consumption of organic solvent and energy. These bio-inspired nanocomposite adsorbents have shown high potential in wastewater treatment and selective recovery of dye waste, especially for wastewater containing ionic dyes.

Abstract
We developed a trace level detection method for dopamine (DA) based on the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) effect of gold nanoflowers (AuNFs). AuNFs prepared were excellent enhancement fluorescence substrates due to their unique morphology with rich edges and sharp quoins. DA was the target analyte and also as a bridge reagent that could regulate the distance between AuNFs and Tb3+. The characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+ was enhanced significantly through the synergistic effect between the luminescence sensitized by DA and the MEF caused by AuNFs. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the fluorescence intensity of Tb3+ at 545 nm demonstrated very significant sensing ability against DA concentration and showed a good linear relationship in the range of 0.80-300 nM and the limit of detection was 0.21 nM (S/N = 3). The proposed method was also validated in serum samples and the dopamine hydrochloride injection samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
In this research, a facile one-pot method was used to synthesize gold/poly-3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene/carbon nanotube (AuNPs/PEDOT/CNTs) composite material. The composite material was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Then the synthesized nanocomposite material was dropped on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to improve the detection performance of dopamine with a high concentration of ascorbic acid and uric acid. The electrochemical behavior of AuNPs/PEDOT/CNTs/GCE was studied by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under optimum conditions, AuNPs/PEDOT/CNTs/GCE showed a good linear response in the concentration range from 9.14 to 29.704 μM with a detection limit (LOD) and sensitivity of 0.283 μM and 1.557 μA μM-1, respectively. This sensor was applied to detect practical samples with good average recovery. It also exhibited good reproducibility and stability.

Abstract
Despite the rapid development of nanozyme, it is still challenging to develop multifunctional nanozyme with high oxidase-like activity. In this work, a novel type of amorphous imidazole-Cu nanozyme (I-Cu) with high laccase- and catecholase-like activity was prepared by the water induced precipitation of Cu2+ and imidazole to mimick the N-Cu coordinated environment in their active site. I-Cu shows similar Km but 3.7-fold higher Vmax than laccase at the same mass concentration. The possible catalytic mechanism of I-Cu nanozyme, which is composed of substrate binding, substrate oxidation, oxygen binding and oxygen reduction, is proposed. In addition, it also displays high stability under various pH, temperature, long-term storage and high salinity. The oxidation efficiency of I-Cu nanozyme for environmental phenolic pollutants (2,4-dichlorophenol) is 91.8% at 10 h, which is higher than that of laccase (68.8% at 10 h). Furthermore, the colorimetric and smart phone detection of dopamine by I-Cu nanozyme is developed with the detection limit of 0.412 μM. Therefore, we expect this amorphous nanozyme is promising in the various application of bioremediation and biosensor.

Abstract
A compact evanescent wave detection platform (EWDP) is developed for the detection of fluorescence gold nanoclusters. The EWDP employs a simple optical system and a Si-based photodetector SOP-1000 assembly to improve the optical efficiency and detection sensitivity. A microfluidic sample cell is also used to decrease the amount of analyte to 200 μL (The volume of sample cell is really about 30 μL). On this basis, we design a strategy for detecting dopamine (DA) based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) quenching mechanism. By introduction of tyrosinase (TYR) during the detection, the testing time is shortened to 1 min. The fluorescence emission signal decreased dramatically and the quenching ratio (F0-F)/F0 is linearly related to the concentration of DA in the range of 0.03-60 μM with a detection limit of 0.03 μM. Additionally, this detection platform has potential applications for DA fast detection in the microsamples.

Abstract
In this work, a strong blue-emitting fluorescent biosensor based on graphite carbon nitride nanoparticles (GCNNs) (Ex = 340 nm and Em = 435 nm) was synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. With the aid of hydrogen peroxide and horseradish peroxidase, pyrocatechol structure of dopamine (DA) was oxidized to o-quinone structure of polydopamine (PDA) by hydroxyl radical. PDA was able to rapidly and significantly quench fluorescence of GCNNs. In the meanwhile, oxidative self-polymerization from DA to PDA would be blocked by antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AA). Thus, the fluorescence of GCNNs@DA sensor would be recovered owing to the decrease of o-quinone. Based on above-mentioned dual recognition strategy of "turn-off" and "turn off-on", a fast, simple and ultrasensitive method was developed to measure DA and antioxidants. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the detection limits of DA, GSH and AA were 0.064 μmol L-1, 0.11 μmol L-1 and 0.16 μmol L-1 with relative standard deviations of 1.7%, 9.3% and 8.0%, respectively. As one of metal-free quantum dots, our GCNNs-based sensors were also successfully applied to the determination of DA as well as GSH and AA in human serum. The recoveries for the spiked samples were in the range of 93.8%-109% and 95.0%-110% of DA and antioxidants, which shows great promise to clinicalapplication.

Abstract
We report a digital surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform using the arrays of 3D nanolaminate plasmonic crystals (NLPC) coupled with Au nanoparticles and digital (on/off) SERS signal analysis for the accurate quantitative detection of dopamine (DA) at ultralow concentrations. 3D NLPC SERS substrates were fabricated to support the optically dense arrays of vertically-stacked multi-nanogap hotspots and combined with Raman tag-conjugated Au nanoparticles for NLPC-based dual-recognition structures. We demonstrate that the 3D NLPC-based dual-recognition structures including Au nanoparticle-induced additional hotspots can enable more effective SERS enhancement through the molecular recognition of DA. For the accurate quantification of DA at ultralow concentrations, we conducted digital SERS analysis to reduce stochastic signal variation due to various microscopic effects, including molecular orientation/position variation and the spatial distribution of nanoparticle-coupled hotspots. The digital SERS analysis allowed the SERS mapping results from the DA-specific dual-recognition structures to be converted into binary "On/Off" states; the number of "On" events was directly correlated with low-abundance DA molecules down to 1 pM. Therefore, the digital SERS platform using the 3D NLPC-based dual-recognition structures coupled with Au nanoparticles and digital SERS signal analysis can be used not only for the ultrasensitive, accurate, and quantitative determination of DA, but also for the practical and rapid analysis of various molecules on nanostructured surfaces.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) are progressive, incurable health conditions that primarily affect brain cells, and result in loss of brain mass and impaired function. Current sensing technologies for NDD detection are limited by high cost, long sample preparation, and/or require skilled personnel. To overcome these limitations, optical sensors, specifically colorimetric sensors, have garnered increasing attention towards the development of a cost-effective, simple, and rapid alternative approach. In this review, we evaluate colorimetric sensing strategies of NDD biomarkers (e.g. proteins, neurotransmitters, bio-thiols, and sulfide), address the limitations and challenges of optical sensor technologies, and provide our outlook on the future of this field.

Abstract
Recently, much scientific effort has been centered on the control of the ionic transport properties of solid state nanochannels and the rational design and integration of chemical systems to induce changes in the ionic transport by means of interactions with selected target molecules. Here, we report the fabrication of a novel nanofluidic device based on solid-state nanochannels, which combines silane chemistry with both track-etched and atomic layer deposition (ALD) technologies. Nanodevice construction involves the coating of bullet-shaped single-pore nanochannels with silica (SiO2) by ALD and subsequent surface modification by reaction between silanol groups exposed on pore walls and N-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-gluconamide, in order to create a gluconamide-decorated nanochannel surface. The formation of a boroester derivative resulting from the selective reaction of borate with the appended saccharides leads to important changes in the surface charge density and, concomitantly, in the iontronic properties of the nanochannel. Furthermore, we propose a binding model to rationalize the specific interaction saccharide-borate in the surface. Besides, this unique nanodevice exhibits a highly selective and reversible response towards borate/fructose exposure. On the basis of the surface charge variation resulting from borate binding, the nanochannel can reversibly switch between "ON" and "OFF" states in the presence of borate and fructose, respectively. In addition, this work describes the first report of the functionalization of PET/SiO2 nanochannels by the ALD technique. We believe that this work provides a promising framework for the development of new nanochannel-based platforms suitable for multiple applications, such as water quality monitoring or directed molecular transport and separation.

Abstract
Colorimetric localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as analytical response is applied for a wide number of chemical sensors and biosensors. However, the dependence of different factors, such as size distribution of nanoparticles (NPs), shape, dielectric environment, inter-particle distance and matrix, among others, can provide non-reliable results by UV-vis spectrometry in complex matrices if NP assessment is not carried out, particularly at low levels of analyte concentrations. Miniaturized liquid chromatography, capillary (CapLC) and nano (NanoLC), coupled on line with in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) is proposed for the first time for both, controlling suitability of used noble metal NP dispersions and developing plasmonic assays. Several capped noble NPs and target analytes were tested from variations in the chromatographic profiles obtained by using diode array detection. The IT-SPME step, which influenced the chromatographic fingerprint provided by noble NP dispersions, was studied by asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation (AF4) too. We monitored NP aggregation induced by interaction with several analytes like acids and spermine (SPN). Assessment of NPs was achieved in less than 10 min and it permitted to develop suitable plasmonic tests. Here, it was also demonstrated that these assays can be followed by IT-SPME-miniaturized LC-DAD and more sensitivity and selectivity than those provided by UV-Vis spectrometry were achieved. Analysing urine samples to determine SPN as a cancer biomarker as a proof of concept is presented.

Abstract
Iodide-mediated surface etching can tailor the surface plasmon resonance of gold nanostars through etching of the high-energy facets of the nanoparticle protrusions in a rapid and sensitive way. By exploring the underlying mechanisms of this etching and the key parameters influencing it (such as iodide, oxygen, pH, and temperature), we show its potential in a sensitive biosensing system. Horseradish peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of iodide enables control of the etching of gold nanostars to spherical gold nanoparticles, where the resulting spectral shift in the surface plasmon resonance yields a distinct color change of the solution. We further develop this enzyme-modulated surface etching of gold nanostars into a versatile platform for plasmonic immunoassays, where a high sensitivity is possible by signal amplification via magnetic beads and click chemistry.

Abstract
Urchin-like peroxidase mimics 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyl phenyl) porphyrin-functionalized CuCo2O4 nanospheres (Por-CuCo2O4) has been fabricated as an excellent visual biosensor. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been employed to characterize the composition, morphologies, and elemental analysis of the as-synthesized Por-CuCo2O4. The catalytic activity of Por-CuCo2O4 was evaluated by the chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with the aid of H2O2, which exhibited a visual blue change with an absorption maximum at 652 nm for only 10 s. The peroxidase-like behaviors of Por-CuCo2O4 conformed to the Michaelis-Menten equation. Electrochemistry, radical scavenger, and fluorescence probe experiments verified that electron transfer, •O2- radicals, and holes (h+) are the important factors during the catalytic oxidation of TMB. Based on the inhibition of dopamine (DA) on TMB oxidation, the Por-CuCo2O4-based colorimetric biosensor has been successfully constructed for sensitive determination of DA witha detection limit (LOD) of 0.94 μΜ. In addition, colorimetry was validated to detect DA in serum samples with high sensitivity and good selectivity. 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyl phenyl) porphyrin-functionalized urchin-like CuCo2O4 (Por-CuCo2O4) with excellent peroxidase activity, ascribed to the synergistic effect between •O2- radicals and holes (h+). A fast colorimetric sensor on the basis of Por-CuCo2O4 has been constructed to quantitatively determine dopamine concentration in human serums.

Abstract
A cost-effective and environmentally friendly method was formulated for rapid dopamine (DA) detection that was based on the fluorescence (FL) quenching of carbon quantum dots (C-dots). Upon adding DA to the C-dots’ solution, we noticed a regular reduction in their fluorescence intensity. The effects of pH, amount of C-dots, reaction temperature and time on the determination of DA were investigated. Under the optimized experimental conditions, trace amounts of DA could be analyzed. Furthermore, dopamine hydrochloride injection and human urine samples with and without spiked DA were analyzed using the developed sensing system. The procedure was validated following the guidelines of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in terms of the following: calibration range (0.3–100 μM), linearity (R2 = 0.9991), limit of detection (LOD) (93 nM). Recoveries of dopamine with spiked samples at three different levels were between 95.0 and 105.9%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were within 2.68% (n = 6). This method is simple and suitable for the determination of dopamine in pharmaceuticals and human urine for clinical application. Compared with previous reports, the proposed method offers great advantages including ease of C-dot sensor preparation (one-pot synthesis), environmentally friendly sample preparation by using either water or phosphate buffer solution only, a short response time and selectivity.

Abstract
Owing to specific formation of five-membered or six-membered cyclic esters between boric acid groups and cis-diol molecules, boric acid bearing fluorescent materials can not only selectively capture but also specifically identify cis-diol substances. In this work, a novel covalent organic framework containing boric acid groups (COF-BA) was prepared through post-modification via the aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. COF-BA with good stability, a permanent pore structure, a high specific surface area (606 m2 g-1) and a uniform pore size (2.59 nm) exhibited unique selectivity toward the cis-diol guest molecule 1,2-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione (1,2-Doa) with a high adsorption capacity of 177.95 mg g-1. However, as for the isomers of 1,2-Doa (1,4-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione and 2,6-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione), the corresponding uptake capacities are distinctively decreased to 40.86 mg g-1 and 3.05 mg g-1, respectively. It is worth noting that the COF-BA can be recovered and recycled. Moreover, because the formation of the quinoline enhanced the conjugation effect of the COF skeleton, it was unexpectedly found that COF-BA possessed an intrinsic fluorescence property and could be used as an optical sensor for 1,2-Doa.

Abstract
Noble metal-based nanomaterials have been a hot research topic during the past few decades. Particularly, self-assembled porous architectures have triggered tremendous interest. At the forefront of porous nanostructures, there exists a research endeavor of noble metal aerogels (NMAs), which are unique in terms of macroscopic assembly systems and three-dimensional (3D) porous network nanostructures. Combining excellent features of noble metals and the unique structural traits of porous nanostructures, NMAs are of high interest in diverse fields, such as catalysis, sensors, and self-propulsion devices. Regardless of these achievements, it is still challenging to rationally design well-tailored NMAs in terms of ligament sizes, morphologies, and compositions and profoundly investigate the underlying gelation mechanisms. Herein, an elaborate overview of the recent progress on NMAs is given. First, a simple description of typical synthetic methods and some advanced design engineering are provided, and then, the gelation mechanism models of NMAs are discussed in detail. Furthermore, promising applications particularly focusing on electrocatalysis and biosensors are highlighted. In the final section, brief conclusions and an outlook on the existing challenges and future chances of NMAs are also proposed.

Abstract
In view of the high sensitivity and good selectivity, chemical vapor generation atomic spectrometry (CVG-AS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), especially low-cost atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) have been widely used in bioassay. However, the existing AS method is mostly based on heterogeneous strategies, and can't detect multiple targets in one system. In this study, we present the discovery and mechanism study of a phenomenon of Hg2+ pre-reduction that the concentration of Hg2+ decreased when it was mixed with the reductants (ascorbic acid (AA), SnCl2, or NaBH4/KBH4) over long-time reaction (hours) by CVG-AFS and ICP-MS. A homogeneous Cu2+ assay method was developed based on the competition reaction of Cu2+ and Hg2+ for consuming AA, and its application in the detection of pyrophosphate (PPi) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was investigated based on the PPi complexation with Cu2+, and ALP hydrolyzation of PPi using CVG-AFS as a representative detector. Subsequently, in order to further verify the applicability of the system, cation exchange reaction (CER) was utilized here based on the selectively recognize Ag+ and C-Ag+-C by CuS nanoparticles (NPs). As the exchanged Cu2+ from CuS NPs can be sensitively and selectively detected via above-mentioned Cu2+ assay method, this strategy can be extended for the Ag+, DNA and prostate specific antigen (PSA) detection based on base complementary pairing and the specific recognition of aptamer. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the system showed high sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+, PPi, ALP, Ag+, DNA, and PSA, with limit of detections (LODs) of 0.12 nmol L-1, 25 μmol L-1, 0.025 U/L, 0.2 nmol L-1, 0.05 nmol L-1, and 0.03 ng/mL, respectively. The method was successfully used to determination Cu2+, ALP, and PSA in human serums, showing similar results with those of ICP-MS and kits methods.

Abstract
Herein, cysteine capped AgInZnS QDs (Cys-AIZS QDs) with a large stoke shift and excellent biocompatibility were synthesized by a one-step aqueous method, followed by modified with 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA). Dopamine (DA) as an important neurotransmitter in brain can lead to significantly decrease in the fluorescence intensity of 3-aminophenylboronic acid-functionalized Cys-AIZS QDs (APBA-AIZS QDs) in a large concentration range of 1.5-900 μM. Good linearity can be obtained in the range of 15-120 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.65 μM. Moreover, Cys-AIZS QDs and APBA-AIZS QDs were applied to living cells imaging, and Cys-AIZS QDs were applied to the co-localization with lysosomes, indicative of the feasibility of intracellular detection.

Abstract
Cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (HCys) and glutathione (GSH) are sulfhydryl-containing amino acids known as biothiols being able to bind to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via sulfhydryl group, resulting in the aggregation of AuNPs. Owning to their inner filter effect, AuNPs can weaken or even quench the fluorescence of fluorescein. However, the introduction of biothiols to fluorescein-AuNPs leads to the recovery of fluorescein fluorescence. Thus, a simple and reliable turn on fluorescence method was developed for monitoring biothiols with fluorescein-AuNPs as a probe. Several factors, including AuNPs concentration, pH value and incubation time, which might influence the fluorescence reclamation of fluorescein-AuNPs probe, were optimized by taking Cys as an example at room temperature. Under the optimal conditions, sensitive sensing of Cys, HCys and GSH was achieved. The detection limits for Cys, GSH, and HCys were 0.027, 0.023, and 0.030μΜ, respectively. This method was used to the determination of Cys in human serum samples with high precision and accuracy, indicating the potential of the method in practical applications with simple operation, good accuracy and high sensitivity.

Abstract
Herein, we present for the first time a novel potentiometric sensor based on the stimulus-responsive molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as a selective receptor for neutral dopamine determination. This smart receptor can change its capabilities to recognize according to external environmental stimuli. Therefore, MIP-binding sites can be regenerated in the polymeric membrane by stimulating with stimulus after each measurement. Based on this effect, reversible detection of the analyte via potentiometric transduction can be achieved. MIPs based on 4-vinylphenylboronic acid as the functional monomer were prepared as the selective receptor. This monomer can successfully bind to dopamine via covalent binding and forming a five- or six-membered cyclic ester in a weakly alkaline aqueous solution. In acidic medium, the produced ester dissociates and regenerates new binding sites in the polymeric membrane. The proposed smart sensor exhibited fast response and good sensitivity towards dopamine with a limit of detection 0.15 µM over the linear range 0.2–10 µM. The selectivity pattern of the proposed ISEs was also evaluated and revealed an enhanced selectivity towards dopamine over several phenolic compounds. Constant-current chronopotentiometry is used for evaluating the short-term potential stability of the proposed ISEs. The obtained results confirm that the stimulus-responsive MIPs provide an attractive way towards reversible MIP-based electrochemical sensors designation.

Abstract
Macrocyclic compounds have attracted tremendous attention for their superior
performance in supramolecular recognition, catalysis, and host-guest interaction. With
these admirable properties, macrocyclic compounds were used as modifiers for enhancing
the sensitivity and selectivity of electrodes and optical sensors. The classic macrocyclic
compounds, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes,
were employed as receptors for electrochemical and optical sensors to develop
new analytical methods with the wilder detection range, lower detection limit, and better
tolerance of interference. Macrocyclic molecules functionalized with nanomaterials, the
small entities with dimensions in the nanoscale, realized the versatility and diversification
of the nano-hybrid materials, which improved the capabilities of recognition and response
with the combining characteristics of two components. Herein, this review focused on the development in the
research field of hybridization of organic macrocycles with nanoparticles and their applications for chemosensors,
aiming at both existing researchers in the field and who would like to enter into the research.

Abstract
Nowadays, several neurological disorders and neurocrine tumours are associated with dopamine (DA) concentrations in various biological fluids. Highly accurate and ultrasensitive detection of DA levels in different biological samples in real-time can change and improve the quality of a patient's life in addition to reducing the treatment cost. Therefore, the design and development of diagnostic tool for in vivo and in vitro monitoring of DA is of considerable clinical and pharmacological importance. In recent decades, a large number of techniques have been established for DA detection, including chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, spectroscopic approaches, and electrochemical (EC) methods. These methods are effective, but most of them still have some drawbacks such as consuming time, effort, and money. Added to that, sometimes they need complex procedures to obtain good sensitivity and suffer from low selectivity due to interference from other biological species such as uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Advanced materials can offer remarkable opportunities to overcome drawbacks in conventional DA sensors. This review aims to explain challenges related to DA detection using different techniques, and to summarize and highlight recent advancements in materials used and approaches applied for several sensor surface modification for the monitoring of DA. Also, it focuses on the analytical features of the EC and optical-based sensing techniques available.
