Abstract
Aims We aimed to determine whether plasma advanced glycation end products or oxidation products (AGE/oxidation-P) predict altered renal function and/or preeclampsia (PE) in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes. Methods Prospectively, using a nested case-control design, we studied 47 pregnant women with type 1 diabetes, of whom 23 developed PE and 24 did not. Nineteen nondiabetic, normotensive pregnant women provided reference values. In plasma obtained at ~12, 22, and 32 weeks' gestation (visits 1, 2, and 3; V1-V3), we measured five AGE products (carboxymethyllysine (CML), carboxyethyl-lysine (CEL), methylglyoxal-hydroimidazolone (MGH1), 3-deoxyglucosone hydroimidazolone (3DGH), and glyoxal-hydroimidazolone (GH1)) and four oxidation products (methionine sulfoxide (MetSO), 2-aminoadipic acid (2-AAA), 3-nitrotyrosine (3NT), and dityrosine (DT)), by liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Clinical outcomes were "estimated glomerular filtration rate" (eGFR) at each visit and onset of PE. Results In diabetic women, associations between AGE/oxidation-P and eGFR were found only in those who developed PE. In this group, CEL, MGH1, and GH1 at V2 and CML, CEL, MGH1, and GH1 at V3 were inversely associated with contemporaneous eGFR, while CEL, MGH1, 3DGH, and GH1 at V2 were inversely associated with eGFR at V3 (all p < 0.05). There were no associations of plasma AGE or oxidation-P with pregnancy-related development of proteinuria or PE. Conclusions Inverse associations of second and early third trimester plasma AGE with eGFR among type 1 diabetic women who developed PE suggest that these patients constitute a subset susceptible to AGE-mediated injury and thus to cardiorenal complications later in life. However, AGE/oxidation-P did not predict PE in type 1 diabetic women.

Abstract
Fatty acid-binding protein-4 (FABP4), commonly known as adipocyte-fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP), is a pleiotropic adipokine that broadly affects immunity and metabolism. It has been increasingly recognized that FABP4 dysfunction is associated with various metabolic syndromes, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic inflammation. However, its explicit roles within the context of women's reproduction and pregnancy remain to be investigated. In this review, we collate recent studies probing the influence of FABP4 on female reproduction, pregnancy, and even fetal health. Elevated circulating FABP4 levels have been found to correlate with impaired reproductive function in women, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis. Throughout pregnancy, FABP4 affects maternal-fetal interface homeostasis by affecting both glycolipid metabolism and immune tolerance, leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage, gestational obesity, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia. Moreover, maternal FABP4 levels exhibit a substantial linkage with the metabolic health of offspring. Herein, we discuss the emerging significance and potential application of FABP4 in reproduction and pregnancy health and delve into its underlying mechanism at molecular levels.

Association between Retinol-Binding Protein 4 Levels and Preeclampsia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14245201. Abstract
Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is claimed to be associated with the development of preeclampsia, yet the reports are inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the association between RBP4 levels and preeclampsia. The PubMed, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect databases were searched for studies that investigated RBP4 levels in preeclampsia patients and compared them with normal controls. The meta-analysis was conducted by calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) of RBP4 between cases and controls. The meta package with the R software was used to perform all statistical analysis. A total of 13 studies, comprising 569 cases and 1411 controls, met the inclusion criteria and were thus included in the meta-analysis. According to the random effect model, the SMD of RBP4 was significantly higher in women with preeclampsia compared with normal controls [SMD of RBP4: 0.55 ng/mL; 95% CI (0.06; 1.05); p = 0.028; I2 = 89%]. Likewise, the stratified meta-analysis showed the same pattern in the studies which measured RBP4 levels in the third trimester, as well as in the studies that investigated severe preeclampsia. Meta-regression did not identify any factor that significantly affected the overall estimate. There was no evidence of reporting bias (Egger's test; t = 0.43; p = 0.587). This meta-analysis with high heterogeneity showed that higher levels of RBP4 were associated with preeclampsia risk. More longitudinal studies spanning the three trimester periods are needed to clarify the association of RBP4 and its dynamics in preeclampsia cases throughout pregnancy.

Abstract
Background: Pre-eclampsia is a serious consideration for women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) planning pregnancy. Risk stratification strategies, such as biomarkers measured in the first trimester of pregnancy, could help identify high-risk women. The literature on T1DM-specific pre-eclampsia biomarkers is expanding. We aimed to provide a narrative review of recently published evidence to identify the most promising biomarker candidates that could be targeted for clinical implementation in existing PE models. Methods: A search using MeSH terms was carried out of Medline, EMBASE, Maternity and Infant Care, Web of Science, and Scopus for relevant papers published since 2015 inclusive and in English. The time limit was applied from the publication of the preceding systematic review in this field. Included studies had pre-eclampsia as a primary outcome, measured one or more serum, plasma or urine biomarkers at any time during pregnancy, and had a distinct group of women with T1DM who developed pre-eclampsia. Studies with pre-eclampsia as a composite outcome were not considered. No restrictions on study types were applied. A narrative synthesis approach was adopted for analysis. Results: A total of 510 records were screened yielding 18 eligible studies relating to 32 different biomarkers. Higher first-trimester levels of HbA1c and urinary albumin were associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia development in women with T1DM. Urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and adipokines were novel biomarkers showing moderate predictive ability before 15 gestational weeks. Two T1DM-specific pre-eclampsia prediction models were proposed, measuring adipokines or urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin together with easily attainable maternal clinical characteristics. Contradicting previous literature, pre-eclampsia risk in women with T1DM was correlated with vitamin D levels and atherogenic lipid profile in the context of haptoglobin phenotype 2-2. Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A and soluble endoglin did not predict pre-eclampsia in women with T1DM, and soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 only predicted pre-eclampsia from the third trimester. Conclusion: Maternally derived biomarkers reflecting glycemic control, insulin resistance and renal dysfunction performed better as PE predictors among women with T1DM than those derived from the placenta. These biomarkers could be trialed in current PE prediction algorithms to tailor them for women with T1DM.

Abstract
Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) are critical for fetal brain development. Infants born to preeclamptic mothers or those born growth restricted due to placental insufficiency have reduced LCPUFA, and are at higher risk for developing neurodevelopmental disorders. Since plasma levels of testosterone (T) and fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) are elevated in preeclampsia, we hypothesized that elevated T induces the expression of FABP4 in the placenta leading to compromised transplacental transport of LCPUFAs. Increased maternal T in pregnant rats significantly decreased n-3 and n-6 LCPUFA levels in maternal and fetal circulation, but increased their placental accumulation. Dietary LCPUFAs supplementation in T dams increased LCPUFA levels in the maternal circulation and further augmented placental storage, while failing to increase fetal levels. The placenta in T dams exhibited increased FABP4 mRNA and protein levels. In vitro, T dose-dependently upregulated FABP4 transcription in trophoblasts. T stimulated androgen receptor (AR) recruitment to the androgen response element and trans-activated FABP4 promoter activity, both of which were abolished by AR antagonist. T in pregnant rats and cultured trophoblasts significantly reduced transplacental transport of C14-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and increased C14-DHA accumulation in the placenta. Importantly, FABP4-overexpression by itself in pregnant rats and trophoblasts increased transplacental transport of C14-DHA with no significant placental accumulation. T exposure, in contrast, inhibited this FABP4-mediated effect by promoting C14-DHA placental accumulation. In summary, our studies show that maternal hyperandrogenism increases placental FABP4 expression via transcriptional upregulation and preferentially routes LCPUFAs toward cellular storage in the placenta leading to offspring lipid deficiency.

Angiogenic Imbalance and Inflammatory Biomarkers in the Prediction of Hypertension as Well as Obstetric and Perinatal Complications in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). We aimed to analyze the altered inflammatory markers and angiogenic factors among women with GDM to identify pregnant women at higher risk of developing HDP. Methods: This was a prospective study of 149 women without hypertension diagnosed in the third trimester with GDM. Inflammatory markers and angiogenic factors were measured at 28−32 weeks of pregnancy. Obstetric and perinatal outcomes were evaluated. Results: More than eight percent of the women developed HDP. Higher levels of the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1/placental growth factor (sFlt-1/PIGF) ratio (4.9 ± 2.6 versus 2.3 ± 1.3, respectively; p < 0.001) and leptin (10.9 ± 0.8 versus 10.08 ± 1.1, respectively; p = 0.038), as well as lower levels of adiponectin (10.5 ± 1.3 versus 12.9 ± 2.7, respectively; p = 0.031), were seen in women who developed HDP versus normotensive women with GDM. A multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that adiponectin had a protective effect with 0.45-fold odds (0.23−0.83; p = 0.012), and that the sFlt-1/PIGF ratio was associated with 2.70-fold odds of developing HDP (CI 95%: 1.24−5.86; p = 0.012). Conclusion: An increase in angiogenic imbalance in the sFlt-1/PIGF ratio in women with GDM was detected and may be an indicator of developing HDP in addition to any subsequent obstetric and perinatal complications.

Abstract
Lentil (Lens culinaris; Fabaceae), one of the major pulse crops in the world, is an important source of proteins, prebiotics, lipids, and essential minerals as well as functional components such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and phenolic acids. To improve crop nutritional and medicinal traits, hybridization and mutation are widely used in plant breeding research. In this study, mutant lentil populations were generated by γ-irradiation for the development of new cultivars by inducing genetic diversity. Molecular networking via Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking web platform and dipeptidyl peptide-IV inhibitor screening assay were utilized as tools for structure-based discovery of active components in active mutant lines selected among the lentil population. The bioactivity-based molecular networking analysis resulted in the annotation of the molecular class of phosphatidylcholine (PC) from the most active mutant line. Among PCs, 1-stearoyl-2-hydroxy-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (18:0 Lyso PC) was selected for further in vivo study of anti-obesity effect in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse model. The administration of 18:0 Lyso PC not only prevented body weight gain and decreased relative gonadal adipose tissue weight, but also attenuated the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and leptin in the sera of HFD-induced obese mice. Additionally, 18:0 Lyso PC treatment inhibited the increase of adipocyte area and crown-like structures in adipose tissue. Therefore, these results suggest that 18:0 Lyso PC is a potential compound to have protective effects against obesity, improving obese phenotype induced by HFD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether serum levels of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and fatty acid-binding protein-4 (FABP4) are associated with missed abortion (MA) in humans. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING University-affiliated hospital. PATIENT(S) Patients with MA at 8-12 weeks of gestation. INTERVENTION(S) None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES(S) Serum levels of FGF21 and FABP4 were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Placental samples were collected during dilation and curettage surgery, and the expression of FGF21 and its related genes were measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULT(S) In the discovery cohort, 78 patients with MA and 79 healthy pregnant women matched for maternal age and body mass index were nested from a prospective cohort. Circulating levels of FGF21 and FABP4 were significantly and independently elevated in patients with MA relative to the levels in the healthy controls. A single measurement of FGF21 serum level effectively discriminated MA with an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.80 (95% confidence interval: 0.73-0.87). Importantly, in our external validation cohort that comprised subjects with MA (n = 34) or induced abortion (n = 27), the FGF21 serum levels achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.85 (95% confidence interval: 0.75-0.96) when identifying those with MA. Nevertheless, expression of FGF21 in the placenta was not associated with its serum concentration. Placental tissues from patients with MA exhibited impaired FGF21 signaling. CONCLUSION(S) Our results suggested that serum levels of FGF21 and FABP4 were associated with MA. Circulating FGF21 may serve as a potential biomarker for the recognition of MA.

Abstract
Fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) is implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disorders. Pharmacological inhibition or genetic deletion of FABP4 improves cardiometabolic health and protects against atherosclerosis in preclinical models. As cardiovascular disease (CVD) is common in type 1 diabetes, we examined the role of FABP4 in the development of complications in type 1 diabetes, focusing on a functional, low-expression variant (rs77878271) in the promoter of the FABP4 gene. For this, we assessed the risk of CVD, stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD), end-stage kidney disease, and mortality using Cox proportional hazards models for the FABP4 rs77878271 in 5,077 Finnish individuals with type 1 diabetes. The low-expression G allele of rs77878271 increased the risk of CVD, independent of confounders. Findings were tested for replication in 852 Danish and 3,678 Finnish individuals with type 1 diabetes. In the meta-analysis, each G allele increased the risk of stroke by 26% (P = 0.04), CAD by 26% (P = 0.006), and CVD by 17% (P = 0.003). In Mendelian randomization, a 1-SD unit decrease in FABP4 increased risk of CAD 2.4-fold. Hence, in contrast with the general population, among patients with type 1 diabetes the low-expression G allele of rs77878271 increased CVD risk, suggesting that genetically low FABP4 levels may be detrimental in the context of type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
Pregnancy and lactation are critical life stages with unique nutritional requirements, including for vitamin A (VA). Current DRIs for VA were published in 2001. The objective of this review was to identify and categorize evidence related to VA requirements in pregnancy and lactation since these DRIs were formulated. We searched MEDLINE and included articles according to an analytic framework of maternal VA exposure on status and health outcomes in the mother-child dyad. Intermediate and indirect evidence supports that maternal VA intakes can impact the mother's VA status, breastmilk, and health outcomes, as well as the child's VA status and select health outcomes. Food-based approaches can lead to more sustained, sufficient VA status in mothers and children. Research needs include further study linking maternal VA intakes on maternal and child VA status, and further associations with outcomes to determine intake requirements to optimize health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluation of serum concentration of leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and MCP-1 in pregnant patients with different types of diabetes mellitus (DM) considering preconception planning and method of DM correction in 11-14th and 30-34th weeks of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN Longitudinal, prospective study included 130 pregnant women divided into the following comparison groups: type 1 DM (T1DM, n = 40), type 2 DM (T2DM, n = 35), GDM (n = 40), and the control group (n = 15). The ELISA method defined the levels of leptin, resistin, adiponectin, and MCP-1 concentration in serum, which was assessed in 11-14th and 30-34th weeks of pregnancy. Statistical analysis was accomplished using SPSS 23.0 and "Prism 8-GraphPad" software. RESULTS The leptin level in the 1st trimester was the highest in T2DM insulin group compared to the control due to gestational age, hence in the 3rd trimester in all groups its serum concentrations appeared higher than in healthy patients (p = 0.0001). In the 1st trimester leptin levels directly correlated with women's BMI, newborns' weight and macrosomia rate, in the 3rd trimester - with OGTT levels, HbA1c, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia rates. Resistin levels in the 1st and 3rd trimesters were increased in almost all DM groups compared to the control group (p = 0.0001). The study established direct positive correlation between resistin and HbA1c, birth weight, and preeclampsia. In the 1st trimester, adiponectin demonstrated the lowest levels in T2DM insulin compared to T1DM and the control group (p = 0.0001) while in the 3rd trimester, adiponectin levels declined alongside gestational age in DM patients and all the groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Adiponectin negatively correlated with BMI, OGTT levels, and preeclampsia rate. MCP-1 levels in T2DM appeared higher than in T1DM patients and the control group in the 1st trimester, whereas in the 3rd trimester MCP-1 declined, correlating with BMI, preeclampsia and OGTT levels. CONCLUSION High rate of adverse perinatal outcomes in diabetic pregnancy might be developed due to more severe metabolic failures and further disturbances of adipokines expression.

Vitamin D Metabolites and Binding Protein Predict Preeclampsia in Women with Type 1 Diabetes. Nutrients 2020; 12:nu12072048. Abstract
The risk for preeclampsia (PE) is enhanced ~4-fold by the presence of maternal type 1 diabetes (T1DM). Vitamin D is essential for healthy pregnancy. We assessed the total, bioavailable, and free concentrations of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), and vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) at ~12, ~22, and ~32 weeks’ gestation (“Visits” (V) 1, 2, and 3, respectively) in 23 T1DM women who developed PE, 24 who remained normotensive, and 19 non-diabetic, normotensive women (reference controls). 25(OH)D deficiency was more frequent in diabetic than non-diabetic women (69% vs. 22%, p < 0.05), but no measure of 25(OH)D predicted PE. By contrast, higher 1,25(OH)2D concentrations at V2 (total, bioavailable, and free: p < 0.01) and V3 (bioavailable: p < 0.05; free: p < 0.01), lower concentrations of VDBP at V3 (p < 0.05), and elevated ratios of 1,25(OH)2D/VDBP (V2, V3: p < 0.01) and 1,25(OH)2D/25(OH)D (V3, p < 0.05) were all associated with PE, and significance persisted in multivariate analyses. In summary, in women with T1DM, concentrations of 1,25(OH)2D were higher, and VDBP lower, in the second and third trimesters in women who later developed PE than in those who did not. 1,25(OH)2D may serve as a new marker for PE risk and could be implicated in pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia represents a major pregnancy complication, associated with high rates of perinatal morbidity. The aim of this systematic review is to accumulate current literature evidence in order to examine the pattern of serum adipokine levels among preeclamptic women and asses their potential efficacy in the prediction of the disease. METHODS Medline, Scopus, CENTRAL, Clinicaltrials.gov and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched from inception. All observational studies reporting serum adipokine values among preeclamptic and healthy pregnant women were held eligible. RESULTS A total of 163 studies were included, comprising 23,482 women. Leptin was evaluated in 91 studies and its values were found to be significantly elevated in preeclamptic women during all pregnancy trimester, independently of disease onset and severity. Preeclampsia was also associated with increased serum fatty acid binding protein-4 and chemerin levels, when measured both during the 1st and 3rd trimester. Data concerning the rest adipokines were either conflicting or limited to reach firm conclusions. Quality of evidence was evaluated to be high for leptin, moderate for serum fatty acid binding protein-4 and chemerin and low for the other adipokines. CONCLUSIONS The existing evidence suggests that preeclampsia is linked to increased levels of leptin, chemerin and fatty acid binding protein-4 in all pregnancy trimesters and forms of the disease. Inconsistent data currently exists concerning the role of the other adipokines. Large-scale prospective studies should longitudinally evaluate the serum concentration of novel adipokines and define the optimal threshold and timing of measurement to be widely applied in clinical practice.

Abstract
CONTEXT The incidence of preeclampsia (PE) is increased in women with diabetes (∼20% vs ∼5% in the general population), and first trimester lipoprotein profiles are predictive. Haptoglobin (Hp), a protein with functional genetic polymorphisms, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic effects. Among people with diabetes, the Hp 2-2 phenotype is associated with cardiorenal disease. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether Hp phenotype is associated with PE in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and/or modulates lipoprotein-associated risks. DESIGN AND SETTING Multicenter prospective study of T1DM pregnancy. PATIENTS Pregnant women with T1DM (normal albuminuria, normotensive at enrolment, n = 47) studied at three visits, all preceding PE onset: 12.3 ± 1.9, 21.8 ± 1.5, and 31.5 ± 1.6 weeks' gestation (mean ± SD). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Hp phenotype and lipoprotein profiles in women with (n = 23) vs without (n = 24) subsequent PE. RESULTS Hp phenotype did not predict PE, but lipoprotein associations with subsequent PE were confined to women with Hp 2-2, in whom the following associations with PE were observed: increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, LDL particle concentration, apolipoprotein B (APOB), triacylglycerol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio, and APOB/apolipoprotein AI (APOA1) ratio; decreased HDL cholesterol, APOA1, large HDL particle concentration, and peripheral lipoprotein lipolysis (all P < 0.05). In women with one or two Hp-1 alleles, no such associations were observed. CONCLUSIONS In women with T1DM, although Hp phenotype did not predict PE risk, lipoprotein-related risks for PE were limited to those with the Hp 2-2 phenotype. Hp phenotype may modulate PE risk in diabetes.

Abstract
The hypertensive pregnancy disorder preeclampsia (PE) is a leading cause of fetal and maternal morbidity/mortality. Obesity increases the risk to develop PE, presumably via the release of inflammatory mediators from the adipose tissue, but the exact etiology remains largely unknown. Using obese PE-like blood pressure high subline 5 (BPH/5) and lean gestational age-matched C57Bl6 mice, we aimed to obtain insight into differential reproductive white adipose tissue (rWAT) gene expression, circulating lipids and inflammation at the maternal-fetal interface during early pregnancy. In addition, we investigated the effect of 7 days 25% calorie restriction (CR) in early pregnancy on gene expression in rWAT and implantation sites. Compared with C57Bl6, female BPH/5 are dyslipidemic before pregnancy and show an amplification of rWAT mass, circulating cholesterol, free fatty acids, and triacylglycerol levels throughout pregnancy. RNA sequencing showed that pregnant BPH/5 mice have elevated gene enrichment in pathways related to inflammation and cholesterol biosynthesis at embryonic day (e) 7.5. Expression of cholesterol-related HMGCS1, MVD, Cyp51a1, and DHCR was validated by quantitative reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction. CR during the first 7 days of pregnancy restored the relative mRNA expression of these genes to a level comparable to C57Bl6 pregnant females and reduced the expression of circulating leptin and proinflammatory prostaglandin synthase 2 in both rWAT and implantation sites in BPH/5 mice at e7.5. Our data suggest a possible role for rWAT in the dyslipidemic state and inflammatory uterine milieu that might underlie the pathogenesis of PE. Future studies should further address the physiological functioning of the adipose tissue in relation to PE-related pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Fetuses exposed to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a higher risk of abnormal glucose homeostasis in later life. The molecular mechanisms of this phenomenon are still not fully understood. Fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) appears to be one of the most probable candidates involved in the pathophysiology of GDM. The main aim of the study was to investigate whether umbilical cord serum FABP4 concentrations are altered in term neonates born to GDM mothers. Two groups of subjects were selected—28 healthy controls and 26 patients with GDM. FABP4, leptin, and ghrelin concentrations in the umbilical cord serum, maternal serum, and maternal urine were determined via an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The umbilical cord serum FABP4 levels were higher in the GDM offspring and were directly associated with the maternal serum FABP4 and leptin levels, as well as the prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and the BMI at and after delivery; however, they correlated negatively with birth weight and lipid parameters. In the multiple linear regression models, the umbilical cord serum FABP4 concentrations depended positively on the maternal serum FABP4 and negatively on the umbilical cord serum ghrelin levels and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. There are many maternal variables that can affect the level of FABP4 in the umbilical cord serum, thus, their evaluation requires further investigation.

Abstract
The incidence of hypertension and diabetes is increasing, it is reported that adipocytokines might be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes and hypertension. We aimed to investigate the features of adipocytokines, included of Leptin, Irisin, LGR4, and Sfrp5 in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with hypertension, simultaneously analyzed the connection of the alteration of adipocytokines with blood pressure and glucose. 424 patients with T2DM and 90 healthy subjects were included in the study. The patients with T2DM were divided into 4 groups based on the blood pressure. The levels of adipocytokines (Leptin, Irisin, LGR4, and Sfrp5) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Significantly higher levels of Leptin and lower levels of Irisin, LGR4 and Sfrp5 were seen in patients with diabetes compared with non-diabetes (P < 0.05), the mean values of Leptin level was ascending and Irisin, LGR4, and Sfrp5 levels were declining with promoting of blood pressure in hypertension as compared to the non-hypertension with diabetic patients. Multiple stepwise linear regression analysis showed that the concentrations of Leptin, Irisin, Sfrp5, and LGR4 were found to be closely associated with the control of blood pressure and glucose. Conclusion: Four adipocytokines might play different roles and closely relate to the occurrence and development of diabetes and hypertension.
