Abstract
Because of their excellent plasticity, phthalates or phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are widely used in plastic products. However, due to the recognized toxicity of PAEs and legislative requirements, the production and use of emerging PAE alternatives have rapidly grown, such as di-isononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH) and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHTP) which are the primary replacements for classic PAEs. Nowadays, PAEs and emerging PAE alternatives are frequently found in a variety of environmental media, including the atmosphere, sludge, rivers, and seawater/sediment. PAEs and emerging PAE alternatives are involved in endocrine-disrupting effects, and they affect the reproductive physiology of different species of fish and mammals. Therefore, their presence in the environment is of considerable concern due to their potential effects on ecosystem function and public health. Nevertheless, current research on the prevalence, destiny, and conduct of PAEs in the environment has primarily focused on classic PAEs, with little attention given to emerging PAE alternatives. The present article furnishes a synopsis of the physicochemical characteristics, occurrence, transport, fate, and adverse effects of both classic PAEs and emerging PAE alternatives on organisms in the ecosystem. Our analysis reveals that both classic PAEs and emerging PAE alternatives are widely distributed in all environmental media, with emerging PAE alternatives increasingly replacing classic PAEs. Various pathways can transform and degrade both classic PAEs and emerging PAE alternatives, and their own and related metabolites can have toxic effects on organisms. This research offers a more extensive comprehension of the health hazards associated with classic PAEs and emerging PAE alternatives.

Abstract
Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely used as plasticizers to enhance the flexibility and durability of different consumer products, including clothing. However, concerns have been raised about the potential adverse health effects associated with the presence of phthalates in textiles, such as endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity and potential carcinogenicity. Based on examination of more than 120 published articles, this paper presents a comprehensive review of studies concerning the phthalate content in clothing and other textile products, with special emphasis on those conducted in the last decade (2014-2023). The types and role of PAEs as plasticizers, the relevant legislation in different countries (emphasizing the importance of monitoring PAE levels in clothing to protect consumer health) and the analytical methods used for PAE determination are critically evaluated. The review also discusses the models used to evaluate exposure to PAEs and the associated health risks. Finally, the study limitations and challenges related to determining the phthalate contents of textile products are considered.

Abstract
This investigation aimed to scrutinize the level of phthalate esters (PEs) in the landfill leachate of a coastal city in the north of the Persian Gulf and the sensitive ecosystem (soil and water) around it. Soil (two depths) and water samples were prepared from 5 stations in wet and dry seasons. The studied landfill leachate contained 114-303 μg/L of phthalates. The highest concentration of phthalates was related to bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (3257 ng/g) in the wet season at surface soil (0-5 cm) in the landfill site, while the lowest one (6 ng/g) belonged to dimethyl phthalate at sub-surface soil at 700 m from the landfill in the dry season. A significant change in the level of Σ6PEs in the dry (303 μg/L) and wet (114 μg/L) seasons (P ≤ 0.05) was observed for water samples. The PE concentrations in wet times were higher in all soil depths than in dry times. With increasing depth, the content of phthalates decreased in all studied environments. A direct relationship was observed between the phthalates concentration and the pH value of leachate/water and soil. The PEs concentration was linked to electrical conductivity (leachate: R2 = 0.65, P < 0.01 and surface soil: R2 = 0.77, P < 0.05) and the soil organic content. The ecological risk of di-n-butyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and di-n-octyl phthalate in the wet season was greater than one. The results showed that significant levels of phthalate esters are released from landfills to the surrounding environment, which requires adequate measures to maintain the health of the ecosystem and nearby residents.

Abstract
In recent years, the presence and migration of PAEs in packaging materials and consumer products has become a serious concern. Based on this concern, the aim of our study is to determine the possible migration potential and speed of PAEs in benthic fish stored in vacuum packaging, as well as to monitor the storage time and type as well as polyethylene (PE) polymer detection.As a result of the analysis performed by µ-Raman spectroscopy, 1 microplastic (MP) of 6 µm in size was determined on the 30th day of storage in whiting fish muscle and the polymer type was found to be Polyethylene (PE) (low density polyethylene: LDPE). Depending on the storage time of the packaging used in the vacuum packaging process, it has been determined that its chemical composition is affected by temperature and different types of polymers are formed. 10 types of PAEs were identified in the packaging material and stored flesh fish: DIBP, DBP, DPENP, DHEXP, BBP, DEHP, DCHP, DNOP, DINP and DDP. While the most dominant PAEs in the packaging material were determined as DEHP, the most dominant PAEs in fish meat were recorded as BBP and the lowest as DMP. The findings provide a motivating model for monitoring the presence and migration of PAEs in foods, while filling an important gap in maintaining a safe food chain.

Abstract
Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), a widely utilized plasticizer, has been described as a potential obesogen based on in vivo disruption of hepatic lipid homeostasis and in vitro promotion of lipid accumulation. However, limited literature exists regarding the specific ramifications of DEHP exposure on obese individuals, and the precise mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of DEHP exposure remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of DEHP on hepatic lipid metabolism in obese mice by comparing them to normal mice. Following a 10-week DEHP exposure period, the obese mice exhibited higher blood lipid levels, more severe hepatic steatosis, and more infiltrations of inflammatory cells in liver tissue than normal mice. Interestingly, the body weight of the mice exhibited no significant alteration. In addition, transcriptomic analyses revealed that both lipogenesis and fatty acid oxidation contributed to hepatic lipid metabolism dysregulation following DEHP exposure. More specifically, alterations in the transcription of genes associated with hepatic lipid metabolism were linked to the different responses to DEHP exposure observed in normal and obese mice. Additionally, the outcomes of in vitro experiments validated the in vivo findings and demonstrated that DEHP exposure could modify hepatic lipid metabolism in normal mice by activating the LXR/SREBP-1c signaling pathway to promote lipogenesis. At the same time, DEHP exposure led to inhibition of the Camkkβ/AMPK pathway to suppress β-fatty acid oxidation. Conversely, in obese mice, DEHP exposure was found to be associated with the stimulation of both lipogenesis and fatty acid oxidation via activation of the LXR/SREBP-1c and PPAR-α signaling pathways, respectively. The findings presented in this study first elucidate the contrasting mechanisms underlying DEHP-induced liver damage in obese and normal mice, thereby offering valuable insights into the pathogenesis of DEHP-induced liver damage in individuals with obesity.

Abstract
Environmental exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during critical periods of development is associated with an increased risk of metabolic diseases, including hepatic steatosis and obesity. Di-2-ethylhexyl-phthalate (DEHP) is an EDC strongly associated with these metabolic abnormalities. DEHP developmental windows of susceptibility are unknown yet have important public health implications. The purpose of this study was to identify these windows of susceptibility and determine whether developmental DEHP exposure alters hepatic metabolism later in life. Dams were exposed to control or feed containing human exposure relevant doses of DEHP (50 μg/kg BW/d) and high dose DEHP (10 mg/kg BW/d) from preconception until weaning or only exposed to DEHP during preconception. Post-weaning, all offspring were fed a control diet throughout adulthood. Using the Metabolon Untargeted Metabolomics platform, we identified 148 significant metabolites in female adult livers that were altered by preconception-gestation-lactation DEHP exposure. We found a significant increase in the levels of acylcarnitines, diacylglycerols, sphingolipids, glutathione, purines, and pyrimidines in DEHP-exposed female livers compared to controls. These changes in fatty acid oxidation and oxidative stress-related metabolites were correlated with hepatic changes including microvesicular steatosis, hepatocyte swelling, inflammation. In contrast to females, we observed fewer metabolic alterations in male offspring, which were uniquely found in preconception-only low dose DEHP exposure group. Although we found that preconception-gestational-lactation exposure causes the most liver pathology, we surprisingly found preconception exposure linked to an abnormal liver metabolome. We also found that two doses exhibited non-monotonic DEHP-induced changes in the liver. Collectively, these findings suggest that metabolic changes in the adult liver of offspring exposed periconceptionally to DHEP depends on the timing of exposure, dose, and sex.

Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most abundant plastics used due to its low price, moldability, temperature and chemical resistance, and outstanding mechanical properties. Consequently, waste from plastic materials is anticipated to rapidly increase with continually increasing demand. When addressing the global problem of solid waste generation, post-consumer recycled materials are encouraged for use in new consumer and industrial products. As a result, the demand is projected to grow in the next several years. In this study, material recovery facility (MRF)-recovered post-consumer PP was utilized to determine its suitability for extrusion blow molded bottle food packaging. PP was sorted and removed from mixed-polymer MRF-recovered bales, ground, trommel-washed, then washed following the Association of Plastics Recyclers' protocols. The washed PCR-PP flake was pelletized then manually blended with virgin PP resin at 25%, 50%, 75, and 100% PCR-PP concentrations and fed into the extrusion blow molding (EBM) machine. The EBM bottles were then tested for physical performance and regulatory compliance (limits of TPCH: 100 μg/g). The results showed an increased crystallization temperature but no practical difference in crystallinity as a function of PCR-PP concentrations. Barrier properties (oxygen and water vapor) remained relatively constant except for 100% MRF-recovered PCR-PP, which was higher for both gas types. Stiffness significantly improved in bottles with PCR-PP (p-value < 0.05). In addition, a wider range of N/IAS was detected in PCR-PP due to plastic additives, food additives, and degradation byproducts. Lastly, targeted phthalates did not exceed the limits of TPCH, and trace levels of BPA were detected in the MRF PCR-PP. Furthermore, the study's results provide critical information on the use of MRF recovered in food packaging applications without compromising performance integrity.

Abstract
As a kind of compounds abused in industry productions, phthalic acid esters (PAEs) cause serious problems in natural environment. PAEs pollution has penetrated into environmental media and human food chain. This review consolidates the updated information to assess the occurrence and distribution of PAEs in each transmission section. It is found that micrograms per kilogram of PAEs are exposed to humans through daily diets. After entering the human body, PAEs often undergo the metabolic process of hydrolysis to monoesters phthalates and conjugation process. Unfortunately, in the process of systemic circulation, PAEs will interact with biological macromolecules in vivo under the action of non-covalent binding, which is also the essence of biological toxicity. The interactions usually operate in the following pathways: (a) competitive binding; (b) functional interference; and (c) abnormal signal transduction. While the non-covalent binding forces mainly contain hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bond, electrostatic interaction, and π interaction. As a typical endocrine disruptor, the health risks of PAEs often start with endocrine disorder, further leading to metabolic disruption, reproductive disorders, and nerve injury. Besides, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity are also attributed to the interaction between PAEs and genetic materials. This review also pointed out that the molecular mechanism study on biological toxicity of PAEs are deficient. Future toxicological research should pay more attention to the intermolecular interactions. This will be beneficial for evaluating and predicting the biological toxicity of pollutants at molecular scale.

Abstract
Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are widely used plasticizers found in consumer products, which enter the environment and pose severe threats to human health. Here, a new PAE-degrading enzyme EstJ6 was modified by combining mutagenesis strategies and a strong promoter replacement to improve its catalytic activity and expression level. Four mutants with enhanced activity were obtained by random mutation, among which EstJ6M1.1 exhibited the highest catalytic activity with an increase in catalytic activity by 2.9-fold toward dibutyl phthalate (DBP) than that of the wild-type (WT) enzyme. With these mutants as a template, a variant EstJ6M2 with 3.1-fold higher catalytic activity and 4.61 times higher catalytic efficiency (Kcat/Km) was identified by staggered extension PCR. Targeting four mutation sites of EstJ6M2, a variant EstJ6M3.1 was gained by site-directed saturation mutagenesis and displayed 4.3-fold higher activity and 5.97 times higher Kcat/Km than WT. The expression level of three mutants EstJ6M1.1, EstJ6M2, and EstJ6M3.1, as well as the WT, increased nearly threefold after a strong promoter replacement. These results provide a proof-theoretical basis and practicable pipeline for applying PAE-degrading enzymes.

Abstract
Parabens, triclosan (TCS), bisphenols, benzophenones, and phthalates are typical endocrine disruptors (EDs) with short half-lives in the human body. The concentration levels of those EDs in a spot urine sample are frequently used in exposure assessment studies, and the reproducibility of urinary levels of these nonpersistent EDs should be considered. In the present study, we consecutively collected 45-day first morning void (FMV) urine samples, as well as daily questionnaires, in six recruited participants and measured the urinary concentrations of six parabens, TCS, nine bisphenols, five benzophenones, and ten phthalate metabolites by using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. MeP, EtP, PrP, TCS, BPA, BPS, BPF, and most phthalate metabolites were frequently detected (over 62 % of samples). The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for ED concentrations in FMV urine samples ranged from fair to excellent for MeP (0.683), EtP (0.702), BPA (0.505), BPS (0.908), BPF (0.887), BP-3 (0.712), mMP (0.661), mEP (0.523), mBP (0.500), miBP (0.724), mBzP (0.961) and all metabolites of DEHP (0.867-0.957), whereas they were low for PrP (0.321) and TCS (0.306). After creatinine adjustment, the values of ICCs for most target EDs were increased with mild to significant improvement. The stability of ED concentrations was affected by daily diet (MeP, TCS, BPA, mMP, miBP, mBP and mBzP), food containers (PrP and mECPP), use of personal care products (HMWP metabolites), pharmaceuticals (EtP) and recorded activities (BPS, mEHP, mBzP, mEHHP and mEOHP), as confirmed by a general linear mixed model. Furthermore, extending the FMV sampling period improved the probability of acceptable reproducibility (ICCs > 0.40) of MeP, EtP, BP-3 and mEP concentrations. For BPS, BPF and HMWP metabolite concentrations showed high probabilities (>80 %) of acceptable reproducibility in the last three days, and the increasing sample size slowly improved the ability to discriminate the subjects. The results were exactly the opposite for BPA concentrations.

Abstract
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)-packaged water is a popular choice for urban potable water across Africa. However, the sources and fate of priority chemical contaminants have not been adequately reported. The present study seeks to determine the effect of storage and labelling on the levels of phthalates - dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and di(2-hexylethyl) phthalate (DEHP) - in HDPE packaged water. Printed and unprinted 500 mL packet samples, treated water and raw water samples were collected from two major companies in Accra and stored at three temperature levels for 28 days. Phthalates were extracted and pre-concentrated for analysis by GC-MS weekly. The results indicated that phthalates loading became detectable within the first 7 days of incubation, with printed samples showing higher concentrations than unprinted samples at every incubation temperature. The highest concentration was recorded for BBP (1.03 μg/L between a lower and upper confidence limits of 0.62 μg/L and 1.42 μg/L). Temperature significantly affected the concentration of DMP for printed packets (p-value = 0.05) and unprinted samples (p-value = 0.06), BBP across all samples, and DEHP in printed samples (p-value = 0.06). On the other hand, storage duration significantly affected the concentration of BBP across all samples. There was a very strong correlation between printing and the concentration of phthalates in the water samples (p-values <0.001) across the storage temperatures. Effect size analysis established significant differences between site-specific printed and unprinted samples. The present study revealed weak interactions between the selected phthalates and the HDPE matrix, and recommends alternative packaging that can restrict the presence of phthalates and other priority chemicals in plastic packaged drinking water.

Abstract
This study analyzes the food storage stability of biodegradable containers made of pork skin gelatin polymer. Packaging materials were prepared with different proportions of walnut shell powder, including 10% (W10), 20% (W20), and polyethylene packaging (PE) as a control. To analyze storage stability, parameters such as pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), microbial population, and color were measured. The pH, yeast and mold, redness, and yellowness of W10 and W20 had no significant difference compared to those of PE in all storage periods (p > 0.05). The TBARS of W20 was shown to slowly increase compared to W10. The VBN concentration of W10 and W20 were significantly higher than that of PE in the first and second weeks, but there was no significant difference in the third week (p < 0.05). The total bacterial counts of W10 and W20 were significantly higher than that of PE during the first week (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference thereafter (p > 0.05). The lightness values of W10 and W20 were significantly lower than that of PE in the second and third weeks (p < 0.05). These results indicated that biodegradable containers containing up to 20% walnut shell powder can substitute plastic packaging materials.

Abstract
Plastics have become an essential part of the modern world thanks to their appealing physical and chemical properties as well as their low production cost. The most common type of polymers used for plastic account for 90% of the total production and are made from petroleum-based nonrenewable resources. Concerns over the sustainability of the current production model and the environmental implications of traditional plastics have fueled the demand for greener formulations and alternatives. In the last decade, new plastics manufactured from renewable sources and biological processes have emerged from research and have been established as a commercially viable solution with less adverse effects. Nevertheless, economic and legislative challenges for biobased plastics hinder their widespread implementation. This review summarizes the history of plastics over the last century, including the most relevant bioplastics and production methods, the environmental impact and mitigation of the adverse effects of conventional and emerging plastics, and the regulatory landscape that renewable and recyclable bioplastics face to reach a sustainable future.

Abstract
A gold nanoparticle-quenched graphene quantum dot-based aptasensor was developed to perform clustered detection of 11 phthalic acid esters (PAEs). The binding of the target PAEs to the aptasensor frees the graphene quantum dots that are otherwise quenched by the carrier gold nanoparticle. The resultant fluorescence upon excitation is proportional to the number of freed graphene quantum dots and hence the target PAE concentration. The synthesis of the proposed aptasensor was first verified step-by-step via FT-IR measurement, scanning electron microscopy, and fluorescence measurement. Selectivity was evaluated for individual and combined target PAEs and compared against seven non-PAE endocrine disrupting compounds. The proposed aptasensor successfully quantified 11 PAEs in test samples with varying concentrations of 0.001-50 ng PAEs/mL and demonstrated a limit of detection of ∼4 pg./mL. Finally, the AuNP-gQD aptasensor was employed to detect multiple combinations of commonly regulated PAEs (DBP, DIBP, DEHP, and BBP). The recovery (%) for all four PAEs combination in environmentally relevant concentrations of 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 ng/mL were ∼100%.

Abstract
There has been increased concern regarding the potential human health risks associated with exposure to phthalates. Research indicates that food intake is the most critical exposure pathway for phthalates. This study aimed to investigate packaged beef samples for the presence of dimethyl terephthalate (DMTP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and diisooctyl phthalate (DiOP) and to assess their translocation from the common form of food packaging procured from various Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region shops. The packaging samples include paper and different types of plastic. Phthalates were extracted by dichloromethane and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). While DnBP had the highest mean values in beef from 34.5 to 378.5 μg·kg−1, DiOP displayed the lowest mean values from LOD to 37 μg·kg−1. The larger contact area and the presence of distributed fat on the surface of the minced meat resulted in significantly higher phthalate translocation than beef slices. Further, DMTP was not detected in any samples. However, the examined food packages do not meet the requirements of Russian, EU and USA legislation, as DnBP migrates to meat. Calculated maximum DnBP daily intake of 0.167 μg·kg−1·day−1 for chilled minced beef in vacuum packaging did not exceed tolerable daily intake (TDI) level. The most alarming results are concerning the phthalates presence in beef farmed in the Leningrad region and not subjected to any plastic packaging. A full-scale study is warranted to determine the pathways and sources of phthalates migration in the food chain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are endocrine disrupting chemicals used in consumer products, building materials, and food processing and packaging materials. They are associated with adverse health outcomes, especially when exposure occurs during heightened windows of susceptibility. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the relationship between housing and dietary characteristics and the concentration of several high-molecular-weight (HMW) phthalate metabolites and BPA in a cohort of Latina adolescents. METHODS We collected information on recent food consumption and housing characteristics and quantified the concentration of HMW phthalate and BPA metabolites in urine collected at two different time points. We used generalized estimating equations (GEE) to assess predictors of each metabolite. RESULTS No significant associations were observed between housing and dietary characteristics and metabolites of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) or BPA. In contrast, higher urinary monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP) concentration was associated with living in a home with vinyl or linoleum flooring (66.7% change, p-value <0.01), while higher urinary mono(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP) concentration was associated with recent consumption of coffee (47.2% change, p-value <0.01), and fast food (30.3% change, p-value <0.05). SIGNIFICANCE These findings may be useful in targeting interventions that reduce phthalate uptake in young adults.

Abstract
Rural areas are exposed to severe environmental pollution issues fed by industrial and agricultural activities combined with poor waste and sanitation management practices, struggling to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with Agenda 2030. Rural communities are examined through a “dual approach” as both contributors and receivers of plastic pollution leakage into the natural environment (through the air–water–soil–biota nexus). Despite the emerging trend of plastic pollution research, in this paper, we identify few studies investigating rural communities. Therefore, proxy analysis of peer-reviewed literature is required to outline the significant gaps related to plastic pollution and plastic waste management issues in rural regions. This work focuses on key stages such as (i) plastic pollution effects on rural communities, (ii) plastic pollution generated by rural communities, (iii) the development of a rural waste management sector in low- and middle-income countries in line with the SDGs, and (iv) circular economy opportunities to reduce plastic pollution in rural areas. We conclude that rural communities must be involved in both future plastic pollution and circular economy research to help decision makers reduce environmental and public health threats, and to catalyze circular initiatives in rural areas around the world, including less developed communities.

Abstract
Accurately quantifying chemical additives with adverse health effects in plastic products is critical for environmental safety and risk assessment. In this work, a novel approach using solubility parameters (δ) as indicators for the extraction of additives in plastics was developed. The mechanism was evaluated by using 10 organic solvents with different solubility parameters to extract brominated flame-retardant-decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) in polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Certified reference materials (CRMs) or CRM candidate materials were applied as matrix materials. The extracted BDE-209 and solubility parameters of solvents could fit into a curve of a quadratic function. The value of abscissa corresponding to the vertex of the function was close to the solubility parameter of plastic calculated by the group contribution method (Δδ < 0.37). Toluene, n-hexane, and acetone were the solvents with high extraction efficiency for PE, PP, and PET, confirming the feasibility of the developed approach. The results of ethyl acetate and acetone indicated the high weight of functional groups affecting the dissolution behavior. The developed approach was further verified by analyzing penta-/octa-BDE and phthalate esters in PET and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and finally applied to analyze 15 plastic products made of PP, PE, PET, polystyrene, and PVC. The detected tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), BDE-209, decabromodiphenyl ethane, and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate all matched the approach and verified its practicability for field sample analysis.

Abstract
Phthalate esters (PAEs) are one of the most widely used plasticizers in polymer products and humans are increasingly exposed to them. The constant exposure to PAEs-contained products has raised some concerns against human health. Thus, the impacts of PAEs and their metabolites on human health require a comprehensive study for a better understanding of the associated risks. Here, we attempt to review eight main health effects of PAE exposure according to the most up-to-date studies. We found that epidemiological studies demonstrated a consistent association between PAE exposure (especially DEHP and its metabolites) and a decrease in sperm quality in males and symptom development of ADHD in children. Overall, we found insufficient evidence and lack of consistency of the association between PAE exposure and cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, atherosclerosis, and CHD), thyroid diseases, respiratory diseases, diabetes, obesity, kidney diseases, intelligence performance in children, and other reproductive system-related diseases (anogenital distance, girl precocious puberty, and endometriosis). Future studies (longitudinal and follow-up investigations) need to thoroughly perform in large-scale populations to yield more consistent and powerful results and increase the precision of the association as well as enhance the overall understanding of potential human health risks of PAEs in long-term exposure.

Abstract
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is widely used as a plasticizer in consumer products. People are continuously exposed to DEHP through ingestion, inhalation and dermal absorption. From epidemiological studies, DEHP has been shown to associate with various adverse health effects, such as reproductive abnormalities and metabolic diseases. Health concerns have been raised regarding DEHP exposures; therefore, relevant risk assessment has become necessary through toxicological testing of DEHP. In the past 10 years, an increasing number of DEHP toxicity studies have been using zebrafish embryos as an in vivo model due to their high fecundity, rapid embryonic development as well as optical transparency, which have now been established as an alternative of the more conventional rodent model. The aim of the present paper is to review the effects of acute (from embryo stage to ≤1 week) and chronic (from embryo stage to >1 week) DEHP exposures on zebrafish, which start from the embryonic stage, and to analyze acute and potential long-term effects induced by acute exposure and effects induced by chronic exposure of DEHP upon subjecting to exposures, starting from the embryonic stage to different developmental stages, with a view to facilitate risk assessments on DEHP exposures.

Abstract
It has been revealed that di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) has toxic impacts on the male reproductive system. Taurine (TAU) is an amino acid with antioxidant property and beneficial impacts on the male reproductive system. In this study, protective impacts of Taurine (TAU) on DEHP-induced Leydig TM3 cell toxicity were investigated. The cells exposed to DEHP (0.8 µmol) or TAU (100 mg/ml) for 24 hr. Cell viability (MTT assay), apoptosis, oxidative stress and testosterone level were examined. DEHP could significantly decrease the cell viability percentage, reduce testosterone level, increase apoptosis, elevate Bax/ Bcl-2 ratio and enhance caspase-3 and -9 activity in the TM3 cells. Additionally, DEHP significantly elevated malondialdehyde contents and reactive oxygen species levels. It also augmented superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in the Leydig cells. Co-treatment of DEHP with TAU increased viability and testosterone level, while oxidative stress and apoptosis significantly reduced. TAU could decrease Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and caspase-3 and -9 activity in the DEHP-intoxicated cells. Our results have clearly shown that TAU protects TM3 cells against oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by DEHP.

Abstract
Folpet, a fungicide used on several crops, easily degrades into phthalimide (PAI) at high temperatures and basic pH. The maximum admitted limit for Folpet in foodstuffs as coffee is defined by the sum of its amount and that of PAI. Noteworthy, PAI can also arise from the reaction between ubiquitous phthalate derivatives and NH3. This work aims to demonstrate that the detection of PAI in roasted coffee is not necessarily diagnostic for Folpet as it can also originate from the reaction between phthalic anhydride (PAA), derived from phthalates, and amino acids (AAs), as a NH3 source. Thermal treatment of AAs with PAA confirmed that PAI generation follows a temperature-dependent path. Experiments with diethyl phthalate (DEP) and AAs have shown that maximum PAI generation via heating occurs at 200 °C for 60 min. PAI generation has also been proven for Folpet-free green coffee beans that were heated under laboratory and industrial roasting conditions.

Abstract
Due to the increasing presence of plastic and plastic associated contaminants in the aquatic environments, the monitoring of this contamination in fish products and the understanding of possible human health implications is considered urgent. However, data are still relatively scarce, mostly due to the methodological challenges in the chemical analysis: these contaminants are ubiquitous and procedural contamination from the laboratory is frequent. In this work, we compared solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to ultrasonic assisted solvent extraction (UASE) as sample preparation methods for the liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination of phthalates in fish fillets. UASE was carried out with an acetone-hexane (1:1) solution and according to a reference procedure aimed to obtain the exhaustive extraction of the target analytes. SPME was carried out by applying C18 fibers in direct immersion mode and by using water/methanol 20:80 mixture to desorb the aliquot required for the analysis. Overall, SPME displayed an improved control of the background contamination and enabled lower LOQs. Precision, calculated as relative standard deviation (RSD) on replicates of a reference sample, was below 24% for both the method. Analysis of real samples purchased from Italian supermarkets showed that SPME might be an efficient tool for estimating the risk associated with fish consumption.
