Behavioral and ecological factors account for variation in the mass-independent energy expenditures of endotherms

Ursids evolved dietary diversity without major alterations in metabolic rates

The diets of the eight species of ursids range from carnivory (e.g., polar bears, Ursus maritimus) to insectivory (e.g., sloth bears, Melursus ursinus), omnivory (e.g., brown bears, U. arctos), and herbivory (e.g., giant pandas, Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Dietary energy availability ranges from the high-fat, highly digestible, calorically dense diet of polar bears (~ 6.4 kcal digestible energy/g fresh weight) to the high-fiber, poorly digestible, calorically restricted diet (~ 0.7) of giant pandas. Thus, ursids provide the opportunity to examine the extent to which dietary energy drives evolution of energy metabolism in a closely related group of animals. We measured the daily energy expenditure (DEE) of captive brown bears in a relatively large, zoo-type enclosure and compared those values to previously published results on captive brown bears, captive and free-ranging polar bears, and captive and free-ranging giant pandas. We found that all three species have similar mass-specific DEE when travel distances and energy intake are normalized even though their diets differ dramatically and phylogenetic lineages are separated by millions of years. For giant pandas, the ability to engage in low-cost stationary foraging relative to more wide-ranging bears likely provided the necessary energy savings to become bamboo specialists without greatly altering their metabolic rate.

Individual (Co)variation in Resting and Maximal Metabolic Rates in Wild Mice

AbstractBasal metabolic rate (BMR) represents the lowest level of aerobic metabolism in a resting, postabsorptive endotherm as measured within the thermoneutral zone. By contrast, maximal metabolic rate ([Formula: see text]max) reflects the upper limit of aerobic metabolism achieved during intensive exercise. As BMR and [Formula: see text]max define the boundaries of the possible levels of aerobic metabolism expressed by a normothermic individual, a key question is whether BMR and [Formula: see text]max are correlated. In the present study, we took repeated paired measurements of thermoneutral resting metabolic rate (RMR_t) and [Formula: see text]max on 165 white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus). Over a single summer (May-October), repeatability (R ± SE) was low but statistically significant ([Formula: see text]) for both RMR_t and [Formula: see text]max ([Formula: see text] for RMR_t; [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text]max). Willingness to run during the forced-exercise trials was also significantly repeatable ([Formula: see text]). At the residual level (within individual), RMR_t and [Formula: see text]max tended to be positively correlated ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]), suggesting the presence of correlated phenotypic plasticity. By contrast, RMR_t and [Formula: see text]max were significantly negatively correlated at the among-individual level ([Formula: see text]). To the extent that variation in RMR_t reflects variation in BMR, the negative among-individual correlation does not corroborate the idea that a costly metabolic machinery is needed to support a high [Formula: see text]max. Future research should investigate the (genetic) relationship between RMR_t (and BMR) and other energetically expensive behaviors and activities to better understand how energy is allocated within individuals.

Metabolic and behavioral adaptations of greater white-toothed shrews to urban conditions

The global trend of urbanization is creating novel challenges for many animal species. Studies investigating behavioral differences between rural and urban populations often report a general increase in risk-taking behaviors in urban populations. According to the most common energy management model (the performance model), behaviors that increase access to resources, such as aggression and boldness, and behaviors that consume net energy, like locomotion and stress responses, are both positively correlated to resting metabolic rate (RMR). Thus, we expect urban populations to not only exhibit a higher level of risk-taking behavior but also a higher RMR. However, these interactions remain poorly investigated. Our main goal was to analyze the relationship between RMR and risk-taking behaviors in the greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) in rural versus urban populations. Trapped shrews were brought to captivity where we measured RMR, boldness, and exploration rate three times in each individual. Our findings revealed that urban shrews were indeed bolder and more exploratory, but contrary to our expectations, their RMR was lower than that of rural shrews. This is likely explained by differences in the environmental conditions of these two habitats, such as higher ambient temperatures and/or lower prey availability in cities. When looking at each population separately, this relationship remained similar: urban shrews with a higher RMR were less bold, and rural shrews with a higher RMR showed a lower exploration rate. We conclude that the energetic strategy of C. russula is dependent on the environmental and observational context and cannot be explained by the performance model.

Emergent Coordination of the CHKB and CPT1B Genes in Eutherian Mammals: Implications for the Origin of Brown Adipose Tissue

Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation (FAO) contributes to the proton motive force that drives ATP synthesis in many mammalian tissues. In eutherian (placental) mammals, brown adipose tissue (BAT) can also dissipate this proton gradient through uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) to generate heat, but the evolutionary events underlying the emergence of BAT are unknown. An essential step in FAO is the transport of cytoplasmic long chain acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA) into the mitochondrial matrix, which requires the action of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1B (CPT1B) in striated muscle and BAT. In eutherians, the CPT1B gene is closely linked to the choline kinase beta (CHKB) gene, which is transcribed from the same DNA strand and terminates just upstream of CPT1B. CHKB is a rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine (PC), a predominant mitochondrial membrane phospholipid, suggesting that the coordinated expression of CHKB and CPT1B may cooperatively enhance mitochondrial FAO. The present findings show that transcription of the eutherian CHKB and CPT1B genes is linked within a unitary epigenetic domain targeted to the CHKB gene, and that that this regulatory linkage appears to have resulted from an intergenic deletion in eutherians that significantly altered the distribution of CHKB and CPT1B expression. Informed by the timing of this event relative to the emergence of BAT, the phylogeny of CHKB-CPT1B synteny, and the insufficiency of UCP1 to account for eutherian BAT, these data support a mechanism for the emergence of BAT based on the acquisition of a novel capacity for adipocyte FAO in a background of extant UCP1.

Scientific statement on the coverage of bats by the current pesticide risk assessment for birds and mammals

Bats are an important group of mammals, frequently foraging in farmland and potentially exposed to pesticides. This statement considers whether the current risk assessment performed for birds and ground dwelling mammals exposed to pesticides is also protective of bats. Three main issues were addressed. Firstly, whether bats are toxicologically more or less sensitive than the most sensitive birds and mammals. Secondly, whether oral exposure of bats to pesticides is greater or lower than in ground dwelling mammals and birds. Thirdly, whether there are other important exposure routes relevant to bats. A large variation in toxicological sensitivity and no relationship between sensitivity of bats and bird or mammal test-species to pesticides could be found. In addition, bats have unique traits, such as echolocation and torpor which can be adversely affected by exposure to pesticides and which are not covered by the endpoints currently selected for wild mammal risk assessment. The current exposure assessment methodology was used for oral exposure and adapted to bats using bat-specific parameters. For oral exposure, it was concluded that for most standard risk assessment scenarios the current approach did not cover exposure of bats to pesticide residues in food. Calculations of potential dermal exposure for bats foraging during spraying operations suggest that this may be a very important exposure route. Dermal routes of exposure should be combined with inhalation and oral exposure. Based on the evidence compiled, the Panel concludes that bats are not adequately covered by the current risk assessment approach, and that there is a need to develop a bat-specific risk assessment scheme. In general, there was scarcity of data to assess the risks for bat exposed to pesticides. Recommendations for research are made, including identification of alternatives to laboratory testing of bats to assess toxicological effects.

A reexamination of the metabolic response of the genus Peromyscus to a climatic gradient

An earlier analysis demonstrated that the mass-independent energy expenditure of five species of the genus Peromyscus Gloger, 1841 decreased with increasing aridity along a mesic–xeric climatic gradient. Each species was represented by two populations that were located along the gradient. These data are reexamined with new analytical techniques. A mass analysis accounted for the basal rates of six populations within 10% of the measured rates. The analysis accounted for the rates of all eight populations within 10% when it included the gradient. An apparent limit to this response may restrict the geographic distributions of Peromyscus in desert environments, which may have distributional and survival consequences with climate change. One species, the California mouse (Peromyscus californicus (Gambel, 1848)), did not conform to the analysis of the other species, which may reflect the presence of unidentified biological or environmental factors present in this and the other species. A successful analysis of the energy expenditures of species must include their characteristics and those of the environment in which they live because these are the factors that define species and their performance. To determine the effectiveness of an analysis, the estimated expenditures are compared with the measured expenditures, acceptable estimates being within 10% of the measured expenditures.

What determines the basal rate of metabolism?

The basal rate of metabolism (BMR) is the most reported estimate of energy expenditure in endotherms. Its principal determinant is body mass, but it also correlates with a variety of behavioral not determine basal rate, they are byproducts of the mechanisms that are its determinate. In mammals, mass-independent basal rate increases with muscle mass when it is>40% of body mass. Then basal rates in mammals are≥100% of the values expected from mass. Mammals with muscle masses<30% of body mass have lower basal rates, a diminished capacity to regulate body temperature, and often a reduced level of activity. At muscle masses<42% of body mass, birds have body temperatures and basal rates higher than mammals with the same muscle mass. Their high basal rates derive from a high blood flow and mitochondrial density in their pectoral muscles. These factors also occur in the flight muscles of bats. Oxygen transport to the pectoral muscles of birds is facilitated by an increase in heart mass and hematocrit. This arrangement avoids transporting a large muscle mass to fuel flight, thereby reducing the cost of flight. Pectoral muscle masses<9% of body mass correlate with a flightless condition in kiwis, rails, and ducks. Some fruit pigeons have basal rates as low as kiwis, while remaining volant. The mass-independent basal rates of endotherms principally reflect changes of muscle activity and mass. An increase in muscle mass may have contributed to the evolution of endothermy.

Basal metabolic rate in free-living tropical birds: the influence of phylogenetic, behavioral, and ecological factors

The majority of our knowledge of avian energetics is based on studies of birds from temperate and high latitudes. Using the largest existing sample of wild-caught Old World tropical species, we showed that birds from Southern Vietnam had lower basal metabolic rate (BMR) than temperate species. The strongest dissimilarity between tropical and temperate species was the low scaling exponent in the allometric relation between BMR and body mass in tropical birds (the regression slope was 0.573). The passerine migrants to temperate and high latitudes had higher BMR than tropical sedentary passerines. Body mass alone accounted for 93% of the variation in BMR (body mass ranged from 5 to 252 g). Contrary to some other studies, we did not find evidence besides the above mentioned that phylogeny, taxonomy, behavior, or ecology have a significant influence on BMR variation among tropical birds.

Comparative analyses of basal rate of metabolism in mammals: data selection does matter

Basal rate of metabolism (BMR) is a physiological parameter that should be measured under strictly defined experimental conditions. In comparative analyses among mammals BMR is widely used as an index of the intensity of the metabolic machinery or as a proxy for energy expenditure. Many databases with BMR values for mammals are available, but the criteria used to select metabolic data as BMR estimates have often varied and the potential effect of this variability has rarely been questioned. We provide a new, expanded BMR database reflecting compliance with standard criteria (resting, postabsorptive state; thermal neutrality; adult, non-reproductive status for females) and examine potential effects of differential selectivity on the results of comparative analyses. The database includes 1739 different entries for 817 species of mammals, compiled from the original sources. It provides information permitting assessment of the validity of each estimate and presents the value closest to a proper BMR for each entry. Using different selection criteria, several alternative data sets were extracted and used in comparative analyses of (i) the scaling of BMR to body mass and (ii) the relationship between brain mass and BMR. It was expected that results would be especially dependent on selection criteria with small sample sizes and with relatively weak relationships. Phylogenetically informed regression (phylogenetic generalized least squares, PGLS) was applied to the alternative data sets for several different clades (Mammalia, Eutheria, Metatheria, or individual orders). For Mammalia, a 'subsampling procedure' was also applied, in which random subsamples of different sample sizes were taken from each original data set and successively analysed. In each case, two data sets with identical sample size and species, but comprising BMR data with different degrees of reliability, were compared. Selection criteria had minor effects on scaling equations computed for large clades (Mammalia, Eutheria, Metatheria), although less-reliable estimates of BMR were generally about 12-20% larger than more-reliable ones. Larger effects were found with more-limited clades, such as sciuromorph rodents. For the relationship between BMR and brain mass the results of comparative analyses were found to depend strongly on the data set used, especially with more-limited, order-level clades. In fact, with small sample sizes (e.g. <100) results often appeared erratic. Subsampling revealed that sample size has a non-linear effect on the probability of a zero slope for a given relationship. Depending on the species included, results could differ dramatically, especially with small sample sizes. Overall, our findings indicate a need for due diligence when selecting BMR estimates and caution regarding results (even if seemingly significant) with small sample sizes.

Crouching to fit in: the energetic cost of locomotion in tunnels

Animals that are specialized for a particular habitat or mode of locomotion often demonstrate locomotor efficiency in a focal environment when compared to a generalist species. However, measurements of these focal habitats or behaviors are often difficult or impossible to do in the field. In this study, the energetics and kinematics of simulated tunnel locomotion by two unrelated semi-fossorial mammals, the ferret and degu, were analyzed using open-flow respirometry and digital video. Animals were trained to move inside of normal (unconstrained, overground locomotion) and height-decreased (simulated tunnel, adjusted to tolerance limits for each species) Plexiglas chambers that were mounted flush onto a treadmill. Both absolute and relative tunnel performance differed between the species; ferrets tolerated a tunnel height that forced them to crouch at nearly 25% lower hip height than in an unconstrained condition, while degus would not perform on the treadmill past a ∼9% reduction in hip height. Both ferrets and degus exhibited significantly higher metabolic rates and cost of transport (CoT) values when moving in the tunnel condition relative to overgound locomotion. When comparing CoT values across small (&lt;10kg) mammals, ferrets demonstrated a lower than predicted metabolic cost during both tunnel and terrestrial locomotion, whereas degus were very close to line of best fit. Although tunnel locomotion requires a more striking change in posture for ferrets, ferrets are more efficient locomotors in both conditions than mammals of similar mass.

Metabolic heat production and thermal conductance are mass-independent adaptations to thermal environment in birds and mammals

The extent to which different kinds of organisms have adapted to environmental temperature regimes is central to understanding how they respond to climate change. The Scholander-Irving (S-I) model of heat transfer lays the foundation for explaining how endothermic birds and mammals maintain their high, relatively constant body temperatures in the face of wide variation in environmental temperature. The S-I model shows how body temperature is regulated by balancing the rates of heat production and heat loss. Both rates scale with body size, suggesting that larger animals should be better adapted to cold environments than smaller animals, and vice versa. However, the global distributions of ∼9,000 species of terrestrial birds and mammals show that the entire range of body sizes occurs in nearly all climatic regimes. Using physiological and environmental temperature data for 211 bird and 178 mammal species, we test for mass-independent adaptive changes in two key parameters of the S-I model: basal metabolic rate (BMR) and thermal conductance. We derive an axis of thermal adaptation that is independent of body size, extends the S-I model, and highlights interactions among physiological and morphological traits that allow endotherms to persist in a wide range of temperatures. Our macrophysiological and macroecological analyses support our predictions that shifts in BMR and thermal conductance confer important adaptations to environmental temperature in both birds and mammals.

Avian energetics: The passerine/non-passerine dichotomy

Whether passerines collectively have a higher mean mass-independent basal rate of metabolism than the mean of other birds has been controversial. The conclusion that no difference exists was based on phylogenetic analyses. Higher basal rates, however, have been repeatedly seen in passerines and demonstrated by ANCOVA analyses. Several studies indicated that the mean mass-independent basal rate of passerines is >30% higher than the collective mean of other birds. Yet, at least three non-passerine orders of 25 have mean mass-independent basal rates equal to that of passerines. They are Anseriformes, Charadriiformes, and Procellariiformes, all characterized by an active lifestyle, including migratory and pelagic habits. In contrast, sedentary ducks endemic to islands have low basal rates. The high basal rates in temperate passerines correlate with migratory habits and life in cool to cold environments, the absence of these factors being partly responsible for the lower basal rates in most tropical passerines. The principal difference in energetics among non-passerines, between passerines and most non-passerines, and among passerines reflects the frequency of habits associated with high or low mass-independent energy expenditures, the habits correlating with body composition. The mean mass-independent basal rate in tropical passerines is slightly lower than in temperate passerines which implies that the collective mean in passerines would be somewhat lower if tropical passerines were included in proportion to their diversity. However, their inclusion will not eliminate the difference presently seen between passerines and other birds because the difference between tropical and temperate passerines is less than that between passerines and other birds.
