Abstract
Background Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive malignancy. Psychological distress and elevated CXCL1 level have been reported to be closely associated with the poor prognosis and quality of life of patients with TNBC. In preclinical studies using xenograft mouse models, XIAOPI formula, a nationally approved drug prescribed to patients at high risk for breast cancer, inhibited CXCL1 expression and improved survival. Traditional Chinese medicine has unique advantages in improving patients' emotional disorders and quality of life. However, the impact of XIAOPI formula on the serum level of CXCL1, psychological distress, and quality of life among patients with TNBC is currently unknown. Methods In this study, we designed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Patients with TNBC were randomly assigned to receive either the XIAOPI formula or a placebo for three months. The primary outcomes include serum CXCL1 expression, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Secondary outcomes included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B). Results A total of 60 patients with TNBC were enrolled in the investigation. The results showed that the XIAOPI formula significantly decreased CXCL1 expression compared with the control group. Moreover, in comparison to the placebo, the XIAOPI formula increased FACT-B scores while decreasing SDS, SAS, and PSQI scores. Conclusion In patients with TNBC, XIAOPI formula may be effective in reducing CXCL1 levels, enhancing psychological well-being, and quality of life. While our research offers a natural alternative therapy that may enhance the prognosis of TNBC, future validation of its therapeutic effects will require large-scale, long-term clinical trials. Abstract
U.S. racial and ethnic minoritized groups face disproportionate cancer burdens compared to White Americans. Investigating modifiable factors, such as sleep, that are socially patterned and inequitably distributed by race and ethnicity may advance understanding of cancer disparities and provide intervention opportunities. Emerging data suggest poor sleep health is associated with cancer. Yet, its contribution to racial and ethnic cancer disparities is understudied. In this narrative review, we explored the sleep-cancer relation through a disparities lens. We (i) summarized literature reporting on associations between sleep and cancer among racial and ethnic minority populations; (ii) examined potential sleep-cancer mechanisms; and (iii) discussed future directions. We identified five studies reporting on sleep-cancer associations among minoritized groups. Poor sleep health was associated with aggressive breast cancer among Black women, increased breast cancer risk among Asian women, and increased risk of breast and total cancer among Hispanic/Latinx Americans. Sleep and cancer disparities have similar socioeconomic and behavioral determinants, suggesting racial and ethnic minoritized groups may be vulnerable to poor sleep health and its adverse health impacts. Evidence indicates that the sleep-cancer disparities relation is an emerging, but important area of research that warrants further investigation, as sleep may be an avenue for reducing cancer disparities.

Abstract
To examine cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships of psychotropic medications with physical function after menopause. Analyses involved 4557 Women's Health Initiative Long Life Study (WHI-LLS) participants (mean age at WHI enrollment (1993-1998): 62.8 years). Antidepressant, anxiolytic, and sedative/hypnotic medications were evaluated at WHI enrollment and 3-year follow-up visits. Performance-based physical function [Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)] was assessed at the 2012-2013 WHI-LLS visit. Self-reported physical function [RAND-36] was examined at WHI enrollment and the last available follow-up visit-an average of 22 [±2.8] (range: 12-27) years post-enrollment. Multivariable regression models controlled for socio-demographic, lifestyle, and health characteristics. Anxiolytics were not related to physical function. At WHI enrollment, antidepressant use was cross-sectionally related to worse self-reported physical function defined as a continuous (β = -6.27, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -8.48, -4.07) or as a categorical (< 78 vs. ≥ 78) (odds ratio [OR] = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.48, 2.98) outcome. Antidepressant use at WHI enrollment was also associated with worse performance-based physical function (SPPB) [< 10 vs. ≥ 10] (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.21) at the 2012-2013 WHI-LLS visit. Compared to non-users, those using sedative/hypnotics at WHI enrollment but not at the 3-year follow-up visit reported a faster decline in physical function between WHI enrollment and follow-up visits. Among postmenopausal women, antidepressant use was cross-sectionally related to worse self-reported physical function, and with worse performance-based physical function after > 20 years of follow-up. Complex relationships found for hypnotic/sedatives were unexpected and necessitate further investigation.

Abstract
Aging is a risk factor for the development of breast cancer. Foundational science studies have supported associations among neuroinflammation, breast cancer, and chemotherapy, but to date, these associations are based on studies using young adult rodents. The current study examined the neuroinflammatory effects of chemotherapy in aged, tumor-naïve and tumor-bearing mice with or without social enrichment. Mice received two intravenous injections of doxorubicin (A) and cyclophosphamide (C) at a two-week interval. Brain immune cells were enriched/assessed via flow cytometry, seven days following the second chemotherapy injection. Social enrichment enhanced peripheral immune cell trafficking in aged tumor-naive mice treated with AC. Group housed aged tumor bearing mice receiving AC had reduced percentage of IL-6+ monocytes and granulocytes relative to their singly housed counterparts. Notably, group housing aged experimental mice with young cage partners significantly reduced TNF + monocytes, tumor volume, and tumor mass. These data illustrate the importance of social enrichment in attenuating neuroinflammation and are the first to demonstrate that social support with young housing partners reduces tumor growth in aged mice.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is increasing evidence that sleep duration may affect breast cancer survival through effects on circadian function, influencing disease progression. However, further investigation of this association is needed. METHODS In a population-based, prospective cohort study of women from the Western New York Exposures and Breast Cancer Study, we examined mortality outcomes with invasive breast cancer identified using the National Death Index. Cox proportion hazards ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to estimate risk of all-cause (AC) and breast cancer-specific (BC) mortality associated with self-reported usual sleep duration with adjustment for age, race/ethnicity, years of education, body mass index (BMI), menopausal status, pack-years of smoking, tumor stage, and estrogen-receptor (ER) status. We further examined associations within strata of BMI, tumor stage, menopausal status, and ER status. RESULTS A sample of 817 patients with breast cancer were followed for a median of 18.7 years, during which 339 deaths were reported, including 132 breast cancer-specific deaths. Those who reported shorter or longer sleep tended to have a slightly higher BMI, to be less proportionately non-Hispanic White, to report a previous history of benign breast disease, and to have consumed more alcohol during their lifetime. We found no significant associations between sleep duration and AC or BC mortality, including within stratified analyses. CONCLUSION Sleep duration was not associated with either AC or BC mortality including within strata of BMI, tumor stage, menopausal status, or ER status.

Abstract
Introduction: Several widely held explanations of the mechanisms underlying the responses of endogenous sleep-wake-regulating processes to early weekday wakeups have been proposed. Here, they were briefly reviewed and validated against simulations based on the rhythmostatic version of a two-process model of sleep-wake regulation. Methods: Simulated sleep times on weekdays and weekends were compared with the times averaged over 1,048 samples with either earlier or later weekday risetimes. In total, 74 paired samples were collected before and during lockdown, and 93 paired samples were collected during early and later school start times. Results: The counterintuitive predictions of the simulations included the following: 1) only one night of ad lib sleep is sufficient to restore the endogenously determined sleep times after 1 day/5 days of larger/smaller reduction/extension of the sleep/wake phase of the circadian sleep-wake cycle; 2) sleep loss on weekdays is irrecoverable; 3) irrespective of the amount of such deadweight loss, sleep on weekends is not prolonged; and 4) the control of the circadian clocks over the sleep-wake cyclicity is not disrupted throughout the week. Discussion: The following popular explanations of the gaps between weekends and weekdays in sleep timing and duration were not supported by these simulations: 1) early weekday wakeups cause "social jetlag," viewed as the weekend and weekday (back and forth) shifts of the sleep phase relative to the unchanged phase of the circadian clocks, and 2) early weekday wakeups cause an accumulation of "sleep debt paid back" on weekends, or, in other terms, people can "catch-up" or "compensate" sleep on weekends.

Abstract
Background Little is known about the relationship between sleep quality and lung cancer incidence. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the potential connection between sleep quality and lung cancer incidence. Methods We performed and selected a nested case-control study that included 150 lung cancer cases and 150 matched controls based on the Lianyungang cohort. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was utilized to investigate the connection between potential risk factors and lung cancer incidence risk. Results In this study, the average age of participants was 66.5 ± 9.1 years, with 58.7% being male, and 52.7% reportedly experiencing sleep quality problems. The results of multivariate logistic regression showed that poor sleep quality was connected to an increased lung cancer incidence risk (P = 0.033, odds ratio = 1.83, 95% confidence interval = [1.05-3.19]) compared with those with good sleep quality. The stratified analyses showed a significantly positive connection between poor sleep quality (vs. good sleep quality) and cancer risk in smokers (vs. non-smoker, P for interaction = 0.085). The combined effect analysis indicated that smokers with poor sleep quality suffered from a 2.79-fold increase in cancer incidence rates when compared with non-smokers with good sleep quality. Conclusions Poor sleep quality was positively connected to an increased lung cancer incidence risk. In addition, among those individuals with poor sleep quality, smoking increased the lung cancer incidence risk.

Abstract
Relevant evidence regarding the risk of incident breast cancer in patients with psoriasis is lacking. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the risk of breast cancer in patients with psoriasis. We searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases from inception to December 31, 2021, for relevant cohort studies without language limitations. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to determine the quality of the selected papers. A random-effects model meta-analysis was performed to obtain the pooled hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) for breast cancer in relation to psoriasis. We also performed a subgroup analysis of patients with mild-to-moderate-to-severe psoriasis. We included seven cohort studies, all of which were considered high quality, and three of them provided data for meta-analysis. The risk for breast cancer did not increase among patients with psoriasis (pooled HR: 1.11, 95% CI 0.97-1.27; I2 = 67%). In the subgroup analysis, the risk for breast cancer did not significantly increase among patients with mild psoriasis (pooled HR: 1.04, 95% CI 0.97-1.12; I2 = 6%), and the risk for breast cancer did not significantly increase among those with moderate-to-severe psoriasis (pooled HR: 0.96, 95% CI 0.72-1.28; I2 = 0%). Patients with mild or moderate-to-severe psoriasis are not at an elevated risk of breast cancer.

Abstract
The association of insufficient sleep with reduced self-perceived health was previously well established. Moreover, it was sometimes shown that the indicators of poorer health were significantly related to chronotype and weekday-weekend gaps in sleep timing and duration. It remains to be elucidated, however, whether chronotype and these gaps can contribute to the reduced health self-ratings independently from shortened sleep duration or, alternatively, their relationship with health can be simply explained by their association with insufficient sleep on weekdays. In an online survey, we tested whether the self-rated health of university students can be predicted by several individual characteristics of the sleep-wake cycles, such as chronotype, weekday and weekend sleep times, weekday-weekend gap in sleep times, sleepability and wakeability at different times of the day, etc. Responses to a question about general health and to items of several questionnaires for chronobiological assessment were collected from smartphones of 1582 university students (mean age ± standard deviation was 19.5 ± 1.7 y). The results of regression analyses suggested that lower odds of having good self-rated health were significantly associated with an earlier weekday risetime, a later weekday bedtime, and, consequently, a shorter weekday time in bed. After accounting for weekday sleep, self-rated health showed significant association with neither chronotype nor weekday-weekend differences in sleep duration and timing. Besides, the adverse health effects of reduced weekday sleep were independent from the significant adverse effects of several other individual sleep-wake characteristics including poorer nighttime sleepability and lower daytime wakeability. We concluded that university students perceive the negative health impacts of losing sleep by waking up early on weekdays irrespective of their night sleep quality and daytime level of alertness. Their chronotype and weekday-weekend difference in sleep times might not be among significant contributors to this perception. It is of practical importance to consider the reduction of weekday sleep losses among the interventions aimed at preventing sleep and health problems.

Abstract
Current nursing research has characterized symptom clusters and trajectories in individuals with breast cancer. The existing literature describes the relationship between symptoms and biological variables and the potential moderating effects of individual and social factors. The genomic profiling of breast cancer has also been an area of much recent research. Emerging evidence indicates that incorporating cancer genomics into symptom science research can aid in the prognostication of symptoms and elucidate targets for symptom management interventions. The aim of this paper is to outline a model to integrate cancer genomics into symptom science research, illustrated using breast cancer and psychoneurological (PN) symptoms as an example. We present a review of the current literature surrounding breast cancer genomics (specifically cancer genomic instability) and the biological underpinnings of the PN symptom cluster. Advances in both of these areas indicate that inflammation may serve as the bridge between cancer genomics and the PN symptom cluster. We also outline how the integration of cancer genomics into symptom science research synergizes with current research of individual and social factors in relation to symptoms. This model aims to provide a framework to guide future biopsychosocial symptom science research that can elucidate new predictive methods and new targets for intervention.

Abstract
Current literature has identified relationships among sleep, nutrition, and diet-related chronic diseases; however, knowledge about how sleep influences diet-related diseases is lacking in dietetics practice. This narrative review briefly explains sleep physiology and outlines the relationships between sleep duration and quality and common nutrition-related diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and cancer. Additionally, the review discusses how sleep influences wound healing and pregnancy outcomes and why hospitalized patients are likely to experience sleep problems. Plausible mechanisms explaining the relationships between sleep and disease are presented. Finally, commonly used sleep assessment tools and interventions are reviewed. Given the importance of sleep to health, dietitians should not only be aware of the role sleep plays in disease development and prevention but also assess sleep when feasible and refer patients and clients who are at high risk for sleep problems to a sleep clinic or community program that can address sleep issues.Teaching points:Sleep duration and quality influence risk and outcomes of common nutrition-related diseases.Sleep health evaluation is a missing piece in dietetic practice.There are easy-to-use, validated tools that dietitians can use to screen for sleep problems in order to refer patients and clients to sleep experts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although 80% of cancer survivors report symptoms of insomnia, only 28-43% meet DSM-5 criteria for this diagnosis. We sought to characterize the association between patient-reported insomnia symptoms, patient outcomes, and supportive care variables, as well as explore clinically meaningful insomnia thresholds in a sample of women diagnosed with breast and gynecologic cancers. METHODS From July 2018-March 2019, all breast and gynecologic cancer survivors seen at the Stanford Women's Cancer Center were approached and invited to participate in the study (15% declined). Of those who consented, 273 survivors completed an online survey related to their sleep (ISI), quality of life (FACT-G), distress (PHQ-4), supportive care needs (SCNS-SF34), and symptom severity (MDASI). Survivors who scored <8 on ISI were categorized as "good sleepers," survivors with ISI ≥8 were categorized as "bad sleepers." RESULTS 126 (46.2%) of survivors were "good sleepers," 147 (53.8%) were "bad sleepers." Good sleepers were older than bad sleepers (p < .05) but did not differ in any other demographic or any medical variables. Using hierarchical linear regression models, we found that good sleep (ISI <8) was associated with higher quality of life, lower psychological distress, increased social support, lower symptom severity, and lower supportive care needs, after accounting for demographic, medical, and treatment variables. The findings were largely replicated with an ISI cut off of 15. CONCLUSIONS Among women treated for breast and gynecologic cancers, survivors who were good sleepers had better psychosocial outcomes, fewer supportive care needs, and lower symptom severity compared to those who reported insomnia symptoms. Results also indicate that degree of sleep impairment, whether mild or severe, has similarly poor associations with most aspects of patient functioning and symptomatic burden. Further research is needed to determine causality of these findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate sleep and affective (mood/anxiety) disorders as clinical predictors of incident Parkinson's disease (PD) among women ≥65 years of age. METHODS We performed secondary analyses with available data from the Women's Health Initiative Clinical Trials and Observational Study linked to Medicare claims. Sleep, mood and anxiety disorders at baseline were defined using diagnostic codes. Incident PD was defined using self-reported PD, first PD diagnosis, use of PD medications, and/or deaths attributed to PD. Cox regression was applied to estimate hazard ratios (HR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI), controlling for socio-demographic/lifestyle/health characteristics. Time-to-event was calculated from baseline (1993-1998) to year of PD event, loss to follow-up, death, or December 31, 2018, whichever came first. RESULTS A total of 53,996 study-eligible WHI participants yielded 1756 (3.25 %) PD cases over ~14.39 (±6.18) years of follow-up. The relative risk for PD doubled among women with affective disorders (HR = 2.05, 95 % CI: 1.84, 2.27), mood disorders (HR = 2.18, 95 % CI: 1.97, 2.42) and anxiety disorders (HR = 1.97, 95 % CI: 1.75, 2.22). Sleep disorders alone (without affective) were not significantly associated with PD risk (HR = 0.85, 95 % CI: 0.69, 1.04), whereas affective disorders alone (without sleep) (HR = 1.93, 95 % CI: 1.72, 2.17) or in combination with sleep disorders (HR = 2.18, 95 % CI: 1.85, 2.56) were associated with twice the PD risk relative to no sleep/affective disorders. LIMITATIONS Observational design; Selection bias; Information bias; Generalizability. CONCLUSIONS Among older women, joint sleep/affective disorders and affective disorders alone are strong clinical predictors of incident PD over 14 years.

Abstract
PURPOSE Short and long sleep duration and poor sleep quality are risk factors for weight gain and cancer mortality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between sleep and weight change among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. METHODS Women participating in the Women's Health Initiative who were diagnosed with incident breast cancer between year one and year three were included. Self-reported sleep duration was categorized as ≤ 5 h (short), 6 h, 7-8 h (optimal), and ≥ 9 h (long). Self-reported sleep quality was categorized as poor, average, and above average. Post-diagnosis weight change was the difference of weight closest to, but preceding diagnosis, and year 3 weight. We used linear regression to evaluate sleep duration and sleep quality associations with post-diagnosis weight change adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS Among 1156 participants, 63% were weight stable after diagnosis; average weight gain post cancer diagnosis was 3.2 kg. Six percent of women reported sleeping ≤ 5 h, 26% reported 6 h, 64% reported 7-8 h, and 4% reported ≥ 9 h. There were no differences in adjusted estimates of weight change among participants with short duration (0.37 kg; 95% CI - 0.88, 1.63), or long duration (- 0.56 kg; 95% CI - 2.03, 0.90) compared to optimal duration, nor was there a difference among poor quality (- 0.51 kg; 95% CI - 1.42, 0.41) compared to above average quality. CONCLUSION Among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors, sleep duration and quality were not associated with weight change after breast cancer diagnosis. Future studies should consider capturing change in adiposity and to expand beyond self-reported sleep.

Abstract
Circadian disruption has been linked to cancer development, progression, and radiation response. Clinical evidence to date shows that circadian genetic variation and time of treatment affect radiation response and toxicity for women with breast cancer. At the molecular level, there is interplay between circadian clock regulators such as PER1, which mediates ATM and p53-mediated cell cycle gating and apoptosis. These molecular alterations may govern aggressive cancer phenotypes, outcomes, and radiation response. Exploiting the various circadian clock mechanisms may enhance the therapeutic index of radiation by decreasing toxicity, increasing disease control, and improving outcomes. We will review the body’s natural circadian rhythms and clock gene-regulation while exploring preclinical and clinical evidence that implicates chronobiological disruptions in the etiology of breast cancer. We will discuss radiobiological principles and the circadian regulation of DNA damage responses. Lastly, we will present potential rational therapeutic approaches that target circadian pathways to improve outcomes in breast cancer. Understanding the implications of optimal timing in cancer treatment and exploring ways to entrain circadian biology with light, diet, and chronobiological agents like melatonin may provide an avenue for enhancing the therapeutic index of radiotherapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association of sleep disturbance with Parkinson disease (PD) during 10+ years of follow-up among postmenopausal women, 50 to 79 years of age at baseline. METHODS Longitudinal data on 130,502 study-eligible women (mean ± standard deviation baseline age = 63.16 ± 7.20 y) from the Women's Health Initiative Clinical Trials and Women's Health Initiative Observational Study were analyzed. The cohort was followed for 15.88 ± 6.50 years, yielding 2,829 (2.17%) PD cases. Sleep disturbance (habitual sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, obstructive sleep apnea risk factors, sleep aids among those with WHI Insomnia Rating Scale scores (WHIIRS) > 9) was measured at baseline and one follow-up time by September 12, 2005. Cox proportional hazards models evaluated relationships controlling for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health characteristics. RESULTS PD was significantly associated with long sleep duration (≥9 h) versus a benchmark of 7 to 8 hours (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.296, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.153-1.456), WHIIRS (>9 vs ≤9) (HR = 1.114, 95% CI:1.023-1.214), and use of sleep aids (yes vs no) (HR = 1.332, 95% CI:1.153-1.539) among those with WHIIRS > 9. Compared with 7 to 8 hours, short (<7 h) sleep duration was unrelated to PD. Finally, the presence of obstructive sleep apnea risk factors was not associated with PD. CONCLUSIONS Among postmenopausal women, sleep disturbance was associated with approximately 10% to 30% increased PD risk after ∼16 years follow-up. Prospective cohort studies with objective exposures and adjudicated outcomes that include men and women of diverse backgrounds are required to confirm and extend these findings.

Abstract
Sleep is a basic need that is frequently set aside in modern societies. This leads to profound but complex physiological maladaptations in the body commonly referred to as circadian disruption, which recently has been characterized as a carcinogenic factor and reason for poor treatment outcomes, shortened survival, and reduced quality of life in cancer patients. As sleep and circadian physiology in cancer patients spans several disciplines including nursing science, neurology, oncology, molecular biology and medical technology, there is a lack of comprehensive and integrated approaches to deal with this serious and growing issue and at best a fractionated understanding of only part of the problem among researchers within each of these segments. Here, we take a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensively review the diagnosis and impact of sleep and circadian disruption in cancer patients. We discuss recent discoveries on molecular regulation of the circadian clock in healthy and malignant cells, the neurological and endocrine pathways controlling sleep and circadian rhythmicity, and their inputs to and outputs from the organism. The benefits and drawbacks of the various technologies, devices, and instruments used to assess sleep and circadian function, as well as the known consequences of sleep disruption and how sleep can be corrected in cancer patients, will be analyzed. We will throughout the review highlight the extensive crosstalk between sleep, circadian rhythms, and metabolic pathways involved in malignancy and identify current knowledge gaps and barriers for addressing the issue of sleep and circadian disruption in cancer patients. By addressing these issues, we hope to provide a foundation for further research as well as better and more effective care for the patients in the future.

Abstract
Poor sleep has become an important public health issue. With loss of sleep durations, poor sleep has been linked to the increased risks for diseases. Here we employed mass cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing to obtain a comprehensive human immune cells landscape in the context of poor sleep, which was analyzed in the context of subset composition, gene signatures, enriched pathways, transcriptional regulatory networks, and intercellular interactions. Participants subjected to staying up had increased T and plasma cell frequency, along with upregulated autoimmune-related markers and pathways in CD4+ T and B cells. Additionally, staying up reduced the differentiation and immune activity of cytotoxic cells, indicative of a predisposition to infection and tumor development. Finally, staying up influenced myeloid subsets distribution and induced inflammation development and cellular senescence. These findings could potentially give high-dimensional and advanced insights for understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pathologic conditions related to poor sleep.

Abstract
Sleep is a crucial factor for health and survival in all animals. In this study, we found by proteomic analysis that some cancer related proteins were impacted by the circadian clock. The 14-3-3ε protein, expression of which is activated by the circadian transcription factor Clock, regulates adult sleep of Drosophila independent of circadian rhythm. Detailed analysis of the sleep regulatory mechanism shows that 14-3-3ε directly targets the Ultrabithorax (Ubx) gene to activate transcription of the pigment dispersing factor (PDF). The dopamine receptor (Dop1R1) and the octopamine receptor (Oamb), are also involved in the 14-3-3ε pathway, which in 14-3-3ε mutant flies causes increases in the dopR1 and OAMB, while downregulation of the DopR1 and Oamb can restore the sleep phenotype caused by the 14-3-3ε mutation. In conclusion, 14-3-3ε is necessary for sleep regulation in Drosophila.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep health is now recognised as a significant risk factor for chronic diseases and is associated with considerable comorbidity and mortality. Community pharmacists are primary care clinicians with an integral role in sleep health promotion and chronic sleep disorder management; however, it is unclear to what extent this is currently being undertaken or what the perspectives of Australian community pharmacists regarding their role in sleep health are. OBJECTIVES To explore community pharmacists' current sleep health practice and perspectives on the potential future of sleep health care in community pharmacy. METHODS Qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out with a maximally varied, convenience-based purposive sample of community pharmacists. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and subjected to, in sequence; an inductive analysis followed by a deductive approach where the inductively derived thematic structure was used as a framework. RESULTS Twenty-five community pharmacists from two Australian states were interviewed. Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) were the most frequently encountered sleep disorders in community pharmacy presentations. Four key themes were derived from the data: 1) Preparedness, 2) Approach, 3) Capabilities and 4) What needs to change? All participants reported that their sleep health knowledge was insufficient and emphasized the need for more education and training. Although some were engaged in providing OSA services, none of the participants offered services for insomnia or other sleep disorders. Time/task pressures, low health system/health care professional sleep health recognition/awareness and the lack of standardised pharmacy-specific sleep health management guidelines were commonly cited barriers for sleep health service provision. CONCLUSION Community pharmacists commonly manage day-to-day sleep health; however, most expressed a need for increased sleep health recognition/awareness by the health system, targeted education/training for pharmacists and support for the future provision of community pharmacy-delivered sleep health services. With the appropriate implementation strategies, community pharmacists could utilise their availability and accessibility to improve the future of primary care sleep health management.

Abstract
Biological rhythms regulate the biology of most, if not all living creatures, from whole organisms to their constitutive cells, their microbiota, and also parasites. Here, we present the hypothesis that internal and external ecological variations induced by biological cycles also influence or are exploited by cancer cells, especially by circulating tumor cells, the key players in the metastatic cascade. We then discuss the possible clinical implications of the effect of biological cycles on cancer progression, and how they could be exploited to improve and standardize methods used in the liquid biopsy field.

Abstract
Introduction Breast cancer is a common malignancy worldwide. Smartphones have gradually become indispensable to our modern lives and have already changed lifestyles of human beings. To our best knowledge, no study has investigated the relationship between smartphone use and breast cancer. This case-control study purposely investigated the relationship between smartphone use and breast cancer risk. Materials and Methods This was a case-control study comprising 894 healthy controls and 211 patients with breast cancer. All participants were asked to respond to standard questionnaires to collect information on sleep quality, smartphone addiction, and smartphone use. Results Participants with smartphone addiction had a significantly higher 1.43-fold risk of breast cancer. Individuals with the habitual behavior of smartphone use >4.5 minutes before bedtime had a significantly increased 5.27-fold risk of breast cancer compared to those who used a smartphone for ≤4.5 minutes before bedtime. Additionally, a closer distance between the smartphone and the breasts when using the smartphone exhibited a significantly increased 1.59-fold risk. Participants who carried their smartphone near their chest or waist-abdomen area had significantly increased 5.03-fold and 4.06-fold risks of breast cancer, respectively, compared to those who carried the smartphone below the waist. Moreover, there was a synergistic effect of smartphone addiction and smartphone use of >4.5 minutes before bedtime which increased the breast cancer risk. Conclusion Excessive smartphone use significantly increased the risk of breast cancer, particularly for participants with smartphone addiction, a close distance between the breasts and smartphone, and the habit of smartphone use before bedtime.

Abstract
Purpose Sleep is essential for life, as well as having a major impact on quality of life. Not much attention has been given to this important factor in the care of lung cancer patients. Patients and Methods We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 404 lung cancer patients treated in our institute between 2010 and 2018. Data about sleep quality, distress and pain were self-reported by questionnaires administered to patients at their first clinic visit to the Institute of Oncology. Sex, age, histology, stage, smoking and marital status were extracted from the patients’ charts. Uni- and multi-variate analyses were carried out to evaluate the correlation of these factors with survival. Results Most patients reported some level of distress and pain. Sleep abnormalities were reported by 58.7% of patients. Distress, pain and bad sleep were correlated with shorter survival in univariate analyses; however, only sleep remained associated with survival in multivariate analysis. Patients reporting bad sleep had a median survival of 16 months, compared to 27 months for patients reporting good sleep (hazard ratio 1.83, 95% C.I. 1.27–2.65). Frequent arousals at night were more tightly correlated with survival than difficulty falling asleep. Conclusion Sleep quality, as reported by lung cancer patients, is highly correlated with survival. Further studies are required to comprehend whether poor sleep quality is directly impacting survival or is a result of the cancer aggressiveness and patients’ conditions.

Abstract
The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a longitudinal study of more than 161,000 postmenopausal women across the United States, provides an opportunity to investigate the link between sleep health and healthy aging. The purpose of this paper was to systematically review all published WHI articles examining sleep as a predictor of health outcomes and health behaviors/quality of life outcomes. A strength of the WHI is that for most participants, sleep measures were completed before a major health diagnosis, with a significant portion of participants also providing sleep measures after diagnosis. Twenty-three WHI articles were identified and examined for this review. The combination of sleep duration and insomnia symptoms was the most commonly investigated sleep measure. The results indicated that both short (≤6 hours) and long (≥9 hours) sleep duration were associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, mortality, cognitive decline, and poor diet. Insomnia symptoms, frequent snoring, and risk of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) were also associated with increased risk for ischemic stroke and cardiovascular disease. However, many significant results were attenuated after multivariable adjustment. Limitations of these WHI examinations include the use of different categories for sleep measures across studies and a lack of examination by race/ethnicity. Owing to the longitudinal study design, large sample size, and long-term follow-up for health outcomes, the WHI serves as a rich resource for examining associations between sleep characteristics, demographics, and health in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Neuroblastoma is the second most common pediatric malignancy and has a high rate of spontaneous remission. Uncovering the mechanisms underlying neuroblastoma cell differentiation is critical for therapeutic purposes. A neuroblastoma cell line (N2a) treated with either serum withdrawal (<2.5%) or melatonin (>0.1 nmol/L) for 24 hours was used as a cell differentiation research model. Interestingly, the hyaluronan synthase 3 (HAS3) protein was induced in differentiated N2a cells. N2a-allografted nude mice received an intraperitoneal injection of melatonin (40 or 80 mg/kg/day for 3 weeks). The mean tumor volume in mice treated with 80 mg/kg melatonin was smaller than that in PBS-treated mice (1416.3 and 3041.3 mm3 , respectively, difference = 1625 mm3 , *P = 0.0003, n = 7 per group). Compared with the vector control group, N2a cells with forced HAS3 overexpression showed significantly increased neuron length (*P = 0.00082) and neurite outgrowth (*P = 0.00059). Intracellular changes in autophagy, including distorted mitochondria with abnormal circular inner membranes, were detected by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our study demonstrated that HAS3-mediated signaling activated by physiological concentrations of melatonin (>0.1 nmol/L) triggered significant N2a cell differentiation. These results provide molecular data with potential clinical relevance for therapeutic drug development.

Abstract
AIM Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and one of the most important causes of death among them. This review aimed to investigate the incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer and to identify the risk factors for breast cancer in the world. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases without any time restrictions. The search keywords included the following terms: breast cancer, risk factors, incidence, and mortality and a combination of these terms. Studies published in English that referred to various aspects of breast cancer including epidemiology and risk factors were included in the study. Overall, 142 articles published in English were included in the study. RESULTS Based on the published studies, the incidence rate of breast cancer varies greatly with race and ethnicity and is higher in developed countries. Results of this study show that mortality rate of breast cancer is higher in less developed regions. The findings of this study demonstrated that various risk factors including demographic, reproductive, hormonal, hereditary, breast related, and lifestyle contribute to the incidence of breast cancer. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicated that incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer is rising, so design and implementation of screening programs and the control of risk factors seem essential.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to estimate cancer-specific mortality and all-cause mortality among cancer survivors associated with both short (typically 5 or 6 h/night) and long (typically 9 or 10 h/night) sleep duration (versus recommendations), separately by sex, cancer site, and sampling frame. METHODS We completed a systematic literature search in five databases and captured relevant literature published through December 2018. Two reviewers independently screened 9,823 records and 32 studies were included representing over 73,000 deaths in cancer survivors. Estimates for short and long sleep duration compared to 'recommended' were pooled using random-effects models. RESULTS Pooled hazards ratios for short and long sleep duration for all-cancer-specific mortality were 1.03 (95% CI 1.00-1.06) and 1.09 (95% CI 1.04-1.13), respectively. In subgroup analyses by cancer site, statistically significant increased risks were found for both short and long sleep durations for lung cancer-specific mortality. These associations were maintained when stratified by sex and sampling frame. There were no statistically significant associations found between either short or long sleep duration and breast, colorectal, ovarian, or prostate cancer-specific mortality. Statistically significant increases in all-cause mortality were observed with long sleep duration in breast cancer survivors (1.38; 95% CI 1.16-1.64) with no significant associations found for colorectal or liver/pancreatic cancers. CONCLUSIONS We observed that long sleep duration increases cancer-specific mortality for all-cancers and lung cancers, while all-cause mortality is increased for breast cancer survivors. Limitations were found within the existing literature that need to be addressed in future studies in order to improve the understanding regarding the exact magnitude of the effect between sleep duration and site-specific mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep has been closely linked to breast cancer risk. However, the association between sleep and breast cancer prognosis remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the separate and joint effects of multiple sleep characteristics on breast cancer prognosis among Chinese women. METHODS A total of 1580 breast cancer patients were recruited between October 2008 and December 2014 and followed up until December 31, 2017 in Guangzhou. Multivariate Cox models were conducted to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for breast cancer prognosis in association with sleep characteristics. RESULTS Long sleep duration at night (>9 h) (HR = 2.33, 95%CI: 1.01-5.42), poor sleep quality (HR = 3.08, 95%CI: 1.74-5.47), and impaired daytime function (HR = 2.49, 95%CI: 1.65-3.79) after diagnosis were associated with an increased risk of breast cancer progression. Both short sleep duration (<6 h) (HR = 2.00, 95%CI: 1.06-3.77, Pinteraction = 0.011) and long sleep duration (>9 h) (HR = 4.69, 95%CI: 1.31-16.78, Pinteraction = 0.187) increased the progression risk only among patients with impaired but not normal daytime function. In addition, daytime napping significantly modified the effect of short sleep duration on the progression (HR = 3.55, 0.59, 95%CI: 1.55-7.97, 0.23-1.53 for patients without and with daytime napping, respectively, Pinteraction = 0.005). Stratification results suggested that the associations were more evident among pre-menopausal patients, although no significant interaction was observed. CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that inadequate sleep duration to feel one's best and poor sleep quality after diagnosis were associated with an increased risk of breast cancer progression, particularly for pre-menopausal women.

Abstract
Breast cancer survivors frequently report sleep problems, but little research has studied sleep patterns longitudinally. We examined trends in sleep quality and duration up to 15 years before and 20 years after a diagnosis of breast cancer, over time among postmenopausal women participating in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). We included 12,098 participants who developed invasive breast cancer after study enrollment. A linear mixed-effects model was used to determine whether the time trend in sleep quality, as measured by the WHI Insomnia Rating Scale (WHIIRS), a measure of perceived insomnia symptoms from the past 4 weeks, changed following a cancer diagnosis. To examine sleep duration, we fit a logistic regression model with random effects for both short (<6 h) and long (≥9 h) sleep. In addition, we studied the association between depressive symptoms and changes in WHIIRS and sleep duration. There was a significantly slower increase in the trend of WHIIRS after diagnosis (β = 0.06; p = 0.03), but there were non-significant increases in the trend of the probability of short or long sleep after diagnosis. The probability of depressive symptoms significantly decreased, though the decrease was more pronounced after diagnosis (p < 0.01). Trends in WHIIRS worsened at a relatively slower rate following diagnosis and lower depression rates may explain the slower worsening in WHIIRS. Our findings suggest that over a long period of time, breast cancer diagnosis does not adversely affect sleep quality and duration in postmenopausal women compared to sleep pre-diagnosis, yet both sleep quality and duration continue to worsen over time.
