Abstract
Ecotoxicological tools, namely biomarkers and bioassays, may provide insights on the ecological quality status of mangroves under restoration. We investigated how 1) physicochemical parameters and water bioassays using Artemia franciscana; and 2) quantification of sublethal (osmoregulatory capacity, biochemical, and oxidative stress) and individual biomarkers (density, length-weight relationship [LWR], parasitic prevalence) in the sentinel fiddler crab Minuca rapax, can improve restoration indicators in mangroves from the Yucatán Peninsula, Southern Gulf of Mexico. We showed that water quality was improved with restoration, but still presented toxicity. Regarding sublethal biomarkers, M rapax from restored areas lower osmotic regulatory capacity, higher oxidative stress, and showed lipid peroxidation. As to the individual biomarkers, the density, LWR, and the prevalence of parasites in M. rapax was higher in restored areas. The use of bioassays/biomarkers were useful as early warning indicators to better assess the health of mangroves under restoration.

Abstract
Given the wide use of plastic and pesticides in agriculture, microplastics (MP) and the herbicide 2,4 dichloro-phenoxy-acetic acid (2-4-D) can be present simultaneously in soil. Nevertheless, little is known about their combined toxicity. In this study, Eisenia andrei was exposed to environmental MP (100 µg kg-1 soil) and 2,4-D (7 mg kg-1 soil) for 7 and 14 days. Bioaccumulation, genotoxicity, oxidative stress and gene expression level were assessed. Results revealed that MP increased 2,4-D bioaccumulation in earthworms. Simultaneous exposure to both these pollutants caused a significant reduction in lysosomal membrane stability (LMS) and an increase in micronuclei (MNi) frequency. Biochemical analysis revealed oxidative alterations in earthworms exposed to all treatments; being very pronounced in earthworms exposed to the mixture in terms of increase in glutathione-S-Transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehydes accumulation (MDA). Furthermore, an up-regulation in cat and gst expression level was recorded in worms exposed to single or mixture treatment, except MP in case of gst. Our data highlight the toxicity of the combined exposure to MP and 2,4-D and afford new insights into the potential ecological risks posed by MP in terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract
The presence of multiple chemicals in aquatic ecosystems makes evaluation of their real impact on the biota difficult. Integrated biomarkers are therefore needed to evaluate how these chemicals contribute to environmental degradation. The aims of the present study were to evaluate responses to and effects of marine pollution using a series of biomarkers through multivariate analyses. Transcriptional responses of cyp1a (cytochrome P450), mt (metallothionein), vtg (vitellogenin) and cyp19b (cytochrome P450 aromatase); branchial and hepatic histological alterations; and Fulton condition factors (CF) were evaluated, as well as the metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons present in Forsterygion capito in Auckland, New Zealand. Sites were selected along a contamination gradient: four highly contaminated sites and four less contaminated. Molecular responses with a higher relative expression of the mt and cyp1a genes were detected at a highly contaminated site (Panmure). Several histological lesion types were found in the livers of fish inhabiting both types of sites, but gill lesions were present primarily at highly contaminated sites. In terms of general health status, the lowest CF values were overwhelmingly found in fish from the same site (Panmure). The multivariate approach revealed that telangiectasia and hyperplasia were associated with the presence of chemicals, and these showed negative associations with the CF values, with fish from three highly contaminated sites being most affected. In conclusion, the multivariate approach helped to integrate these biological markers in this blennioid fish, thus providing a more holistic view of the complex chemical mixtures involved. Future studies should implement these analyses.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess heavy metal contamination in soil, plants, earthworms, and chicken in farmlands adjacent to an old mining site and to evaluate the potential exposure risks to humans through the consumption of chicken. For this purpose, soil, earthworms, plant, chickens, and eggs were sampled from 5 sites following a gradient of contamination. All samples were analyzed for heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn). A food chain model was used in order to characterize heavy metal transfer between soil-plant-earthworm and chicken organs. Furthermore, target hazard quotient (THQ), estimated daily intake (EDI), and hazard index (HI) were employed to assess human health risks posed by heavy metal contamination. Despite the higher level of Pb, our data related to the calculation of EDI and THQ suggested that local consumers are more at risk of Cd contamination. The calculated HI showed values ranging from 2.58 to 4.74 for adults, and up to 12.34 for children, indicating a considerable risk to the health of local inhabitants, especially children. This study highlighted the crucial role of diets based on chickens grown in contaminated areas, on health risks especially for children.

Abstract
The present study aims to assess the effects of contamination of the Agadir bay coasts using bivalves as a biomonitoring sentinel species. Seasonal variations of biochemical composition in terms of total protein content and oxidative stress biomarkers including glutathione-S-transferase, malondialdehyde, catalase and acetylcholinesterase were evaluated in the soft tissues of Scrobicularia plana and Donax trunculus specimens. The latter were collected from two sites in Agadir bay during two-year span (2018-2020). The Integrated Biomarker Response Index (IBR) was performed to classify the stress response in both species and to assess the level of exposure to xenobiotics. The data showed maximum annual values of acetylcholinesterase and malondialdehyde for Donax trunculus in Agadir beach (AG) with 6.25 nmol/mn/mg and 3 nmol/mg of protein, respectively. Those of catalase and glutathione-S-transferase for Scrobicularia plana in Oued Souss estuary (OS) were of 4.41 μmol/mn/mg and 14.43 nmol/mn/mg of protein, respectively. The studied species are considered good indicators in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
The Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) are heavily dependent on the marine resources for food security, employment, government revenue and economic development, hence the concern about the potential exposure of these resources to pollutants. The main goal of this review was to identify ecotoxicology studies published that were done in PICTs. Four major gaps were identified: i) a quantitative gap, with low number of studies published on the PICTs; ii) a geographic gap, where ecotoxicology studies have unevenly covered the different PICTs; iii) a temporal gap, as no biological effect monitoring study has so far been published for the PICTs; and, iv) a pollutants gap, as all of the PICTs studies focused mainly on environmental monitoring studying on average two types of pollutants (heavy metals and pesticides) per PICT only. We suggest, therefore, the potential risk to the marine environment to be estimated by assessing the fate of pollutants via chemical and biological effect monitoring.

Abstract
The mudflat fiddler crab Minuca rapax, typical of mangroves and intertidal zones in the Western Atlantic Ocean, responds to fluctuations in environmental parameters by biochemical and physiological adjustments. Such biochemical effects are commonly employed in environmental studies as biomarkers of estuarine contamination. This study evaluates biochemical responses in the gills and hepatopancreas of M. rapax in situ from localities exhibiting different types and levels of contamination, against a backdrop of fluctuations in environmental parameters like salinity and temperature common to estuarine regions. The biochemical biomarkers metallothionein (MT)-like protein titers and glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities were used to evaluate responses to environmental contamination and seasonal changes in environmental parameters. Crabs were collected during two seasons, the austral winter and summer, at three sites along the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil that present decreasing degrees of environmental contamination: Ilha Diana, Santos (ID) > Rio Itapanhaú, Bertioga (RI) > Picinguaba, Ubatuba (P), a pristine control site. Our findings show that MT were induced in crabs from the contaminated sites (ID and RI) mainly during winter, revealing the activation of detoxification mechanisms; however MT were also induced in P crabs during the summer rainy season. GPX, GST and AChE activities were altered in P crabs during summer and in ID and RI crabs in winter. While enzyme activities in summer crabs may reflect seasonal changes in precipitation and salinity, in winter these altered activities appear to reflect contamination, although an effect of environmental parameters cannot be excluded. These findings reveal a strong seasonal influence on biochemical biomarker responses in Minuca rapax, a relevant factor to consider when interpreting the impact of environmental contamination in estuaries.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the health status of marine mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) caged and deployed at three different sites on the Sardinian coastline characterized by different levels of contamination: Fornelli (F, the reference site), Cala Real (CR), and Porto Torres (PT). A new low density oligonucleotide microarray was used to investigate global gene expression in the digestive gland of mussels. Target genes were selected to cover most of the biological processes involved in the stress response in bivalve mollusks (e.g. DNA metabolism, translation, immune response, cytoskeleton organization). A battery of classical biomarkers was also employed to complement the gene expression analyses. Chemical analysis revealed higher loads of heavy metals (Pb and Cu) and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at PT compared to the other sites. In mussels deployed at CR, functional genomics analysis of the microarray data rendered 78 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in 11 biological processes. Animals exposed at PT had 105 DEGs that were characterized by the regulation of 14 biological processes, including mitochondrial activity, adhesion to substrate, DNA metabolism, translation, metal resistance, and cytoskeleton organization. Biomarker data (lysosomal membrane stability, lysosomal/cytoplasm volume ratio, lipofuscin accumulation, metallothionein content, micronucleus frequency, and cytoskeleton alteration) were in trend with transcriptomic output. Biomarker data were integrated using the Mussel Expert System (MES), allowing defining the area in which the presence of chemicals is toxic for mussels. Our study provides the opportunity to adopt a new approach of integrating transcriptomic (microarray) results with classical biomarkers to assess the impact of pollutants on marine mussels in biomonitoring programs.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution is one of the greatest threats to the ecosystems because it degrades the habitat and is potentially toxic to wildlife and human populations. In the last few decades, bioaccumulation studies performed with a multimarker approach have been a valuable tool for the investigation of environmental and animal safety. We perform an analysis of a benthic teleost fish species - Parablennius sanguinolentus - sampled at several Italian coastal sites with different degrees of anthropogenic pressure. Our integrative analysis encompasses bioaccumulation of 10 metals, biomarkers of environmental stress (micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities) and neutral genetic variation (using sequences of the mtDNA control region). We find a clear and significant correlation of metal bioaccumulation with micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities, especially with undisputed genotoxic metals, such as Cd, Cr, Hg and Pb. Furthermore, the molecular genetic analysis revealed a decrease of genetic variability in the populations more subjected to anthropic pressure.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate heavy metals and selected minerals contents in filets of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), carp (Cyprinus carpio) and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), the major fish species produced in Sidi-Salem reservoir; the largest Tunisian freshwater ecosystem. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, while concentrations of Na and P were determined by flame photometry and spectrophotometry, respectively. Results concerning heavy metals are considered quantitatively reliable for Hg and Cd but must be taken with precautions concerning Pb levels as the LOD (limit of detection) of the analytical process was higher than acceptable limit. They showed greater accumulations of both Hg and Cd in filets of pikeperch than in filets of carp and mullet, but none of the values exceeded the normative maximum levels (0.500 and 0.050 mg kg-1 w.w., respectively). Considering provisional intakes, target hazard quotient and hazard index, estimated for a fish portion per week, consumption of any of the species did not appear to be potentially hazardous for the health as they were far below threshold values. A fish portion would provide substantial amounts (>15% of daily requirements) in essential mineral nutrients (P, Mg and Fe) and thus should be considered an interesting contribution to a healthy diet. It is strongly advocated to authorities including freshwater fish in the official national annual control survey of contaminants in fishery products, which in addition to guaranteeing security of consumers, would also allow diversifying valorisation opportunities and thus increase the economic value of this fish production.

Abstract
This paper presents multiple biomarkers on metal accumulation and its impacts along the Chennai to Puducherry, southeast coast of India using bivalves as bioindicators. In this regard, water samples and Perna viridis were collected from three stations and the accumulation of metals and its biological impacts were assessed. Among the three sampling stations, the maximum accumulation was noticed in Ennore (S1) than the Puducherry (S3) followed by Kovalam (S2). Mean accumulation pattern of metals in Perna viridis was found to be in the following order Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd, which were in close match with the metal concentration in seawater at respective site. The ambient metal concentration and behavior of multiple biomarkers were positively correlated indicating that the uptake of metals might induce biological changes, particularly in the internal organs, thus significantly affecting health of the aquatic organisms. P. viridis provides reliable information concerning the adverse effects and reflects the integrated effects of all contaminants. Thus, study confirmed that Ennore (S1) coast is highly vulnerable for significant pollution, in terms of metal toxicity in the study area. Overall investigation revealed that metal enrichment was observed close to the major urban areas in the S1 and S2 which were associated with industrialized areas. The assessment of multiple biomarkers on metal accumulation was the first step in determining the trophic transfer factors on marine foot web, which can be evaluated in the future based on this study.

Abstract
Because of the ever increasing complexity of environmental contamination profiles, there are limitations to the use of analytical pollutant measurements for monitoring and prioritization of watercourses. The potential of biomarkers has been debated for many years, especially in laboratory settings, but there is a need for studies evaluating these approaches in the field. We evaluated the usefulness of a selection of biomarkers, mostly indicators of general physiological status and common stress responses such as oxidative stress, to discriminate among environmental pollution profiles, with the aim of prioritizing contaminated watercourses for targeted remediation efforts. To this end, juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio Lin.) were exposed in cages in the field to Flemish watercourses with varying pollution profiles. After six weeks of exposure, the bioaccumulation of key pollutants was measured, and a set of organismal, biochemical and transcriptional endpoints was determined in several tissue types. After data integration a discrete set of 14 parameters was identified, that could successfully distinguish all watercourses from each other. We show that an integrated biomarker approach, mainly targeting common stress responses, can offer the resolving power to discriminate among environmentally relevant exposure scenarios, and a means to prioritize watercourses for targeted remediation.

Abstract
To monitor and assess the state of Tunisian freshwater fisheries, two surveys were undertaken at Ghezala and Lahjar reservoirs. Samples were taken in April and May 2013, a period when the fish catchability is high. The selected reservoirs have different surface areas and bathymetries. Using multi-mesh gill nets (EN 14575 amended) designed for sampling fish in lakes, standard fishing methods were applied to estimate species composition, abundance, biomass, and size distribution. Four species were caught in the two reservoirs: barbel, mullet, pike-perch, and roach. Fish abundance showed significant change according to sampling sites, depth strata, and the different mesh sizes used. From the reservoir to the tributary, it was concluded that fish biomass distribution was governed by depth and was most abundant in the upper water layers. Species size distribution differed significantly between the two reservoirs, exceeding the length at first maturity. Species composition and abundance were greater in Lahjar reservoir than in Ghezala. Both reservoirs require support actions to improve fish productivity.

Abstract
Polluted ecosystems may contain mixtures of metals, such that the combinations of metals, even in low concentrations, may cause adverse effects. In the present study, we focused on toxic effects of mixtures of selected metals, the LC50 values, and also their safety limit in aquatic systems imposed by the European legislation using a model organism. Xenopus laevis tadpoles were used as test organisms. They were exposed to metals or their combinations due to 96-h LC50 values. Glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CaE), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) levels were evaluated. Metallothionein concentrations were also determined. The LC50s for Cd, Pb, and Cu were calculated as 5.81mg AI/L, 123.05mg AI/L, and 0.85mg AI/L, respectively. Low lethality ratios were observed with unary exposure of each metal in lower concentrations. Double or triple combinations of LC50 and LC50/2 concentrations caused 100% lethality with Cd+Cu and Pb+Cd+Cu mixtures, while the Pb+Cu mixture also caused high lethal ratios. The selected enzyme activities were significantly affected by metals or mixtures, and dose-related effects were determined. The metallothionein levels generally increased as related to concentration in unary metals and mixtures. Acceptable limit values of unary metals and mixtures did not significantly change metallothionein levels. The results suggest that oxidative stress-related mechanisms are involved in the toxicity induced by selected metals with combinations of very low concentrations.

Abstract
This work offers an environmental assessment of a dredged sediment disposal area in Santos bay, situated on the central coast of the São Paulo State, Brazil. Sediment quality was evaluated through physicochemical analysis and toxicity tests of sediments collected in the disposal site and adjacent area. The physicochemical characterization of the sediments involved grain size distribution, concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, phthalates, metals and nutrients. Acute and chronic toxicity tests were employed, using amphipods (Tiburonella viscana) and sea urchins (Lythechinus variegatus), respectively. Results revealed toxicity by all the methods applied here, suggesting that the area of disposal of dredged material is significantly altered with respect to sediment quality and probably capable of generating deleterious effects on the local biota. Aiming to elucidate the association between the distinct environmental variables and the biological effects measured in laboratory, Factor Analysis was performed. Results revealed that despite most contaminant concentrations were found below the limits established by Brazilian legislation, biological effects were related to metals (chronic toxicity) and organic compounds (acute toxicity). The application of multivariate analysis proved to be particularly useful to assess and interpret the results in an integrated way, particularly due to the large number of parameters analyzed in environmental assessments, and should be applied in future studies.

Abstract
Uzuncayir Dam Lake is one of the most important water bodies in Tunceli. It is polluted by domestic wastewaters together with natural contamination and pesticides, which have had cumulatively negative effects. This study analyzes the effects of pollution by using the fish species, Capoeta umbla as a sentinel species, with a biomarker approach. The approach comprehends a general biomarker of individual fish health, the condition factor and specific biomarkers of contaminant exposure such as glutathione S-transferase (GST) and cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The general water physico-chemical parameters were measured at each sampling sites during each fish-sampling period. Strong seasonal and locational variations were observed among selected markers. In conclusion, the multibiomarker approach used in the present study clearly revealed differences in the fish health among reference and potentially contaminated sites. The study shows that changes of biomarkers such as acetylcholinesterase, glutathione S-transferase and cytochrome P450 1A1 might be useful for the assessment of environmental contamination in the Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey).

Abstract
The cytogenetic toxicity of rhodamine B on root tip cells of Allium cepa was investigated. A. cepa were cultured in water (negative control), 10 ppm methyl methanesulfonate (positive control), and three concentrations of rhodamine B (200, 100, and 50 ppm) for 7 days. Rhodamine B inhibited mitotic activity; increased nuclear anomalies, including micronuclei, nuclear buds, and bridged nuclei; and induced oxidative stress in A. cepa root tissues. Furthermore, a substantial amount of long nucleoplasmic bridges were entangled together, and some nuclei were simultaneously linked to several other nuclei and to nuclear buds with nucleoplasmic bridges in rhodamine B-treated cells. In conclusion, rhodamine B induced cytogenetic effects in A. cepa root tip cells, which suggests that the A. cepa root is an ideal model system for detecting cellular interactions.

Abstract
The Northwestern Portuguese region is densely populated and highly industrialized, suffering from high anthropogenic pressure. To assess the biological effect of the several pollutants that are constantly released to the water, a biomarker-based biomonitoring is a promising approach that may provide early-warning signals of pollutants exposure. Fish gill is the first target of pollutants action, thus histopathological and biochemical changes may constitute potential biomarkers. To evaluate this hypothesis, three native fish species (barbel-Luciobarbus bocagei, chub-Squalius carolitertii and nase-Pseudochondrostoma sp.) were sampled in Northwestern Portuguese rivers, the gill histopathological changes were qualitative and quantitatively analyzed and the lipid peroxidation and glutathione-S-transferase activity were determined. A multivariate statistical analysis was performed to establish correlations between these biological responses, environmental variables and ecological status. The quantitative evaluation of the main histopathological changes and oxidative stress responses emphasize the differences, among species, in the responses to the presence of contaminants in water. Discriminant canonical analysis showed that filament epithelium proliferation, necrosis and GST activity were the main contributors to discriminate the ecological status classification. In addition, the results showed that a wide range of environmental factors are influencing fish physiology. In conclusion, the gill biological responses, although not reflecting specific contaminants, can be used as biomarkers of ecosystems perturbation.

Abstract
The biochemical effects in Carcinus maenas and contamination levels in seawater and sediments of Bizerta Lagoon (northeast of Tunisia) were investigated. The levels of metals and hydrocarbons were higher in seawater and sediments in Menzel Bourguiba and Cimentery in February and July than in the other sampling sites. Differences among sites for glutathione S-transferase, catalase, acetylcholinesterase activities, and the content of lipid peroxidation and metallothioneins in two important organs which accumulated contaminants (the gills and the digestive gland) of the C. maenas were found and possibly related to differences in metal and hydrocarbon levels. The seasonal variation of biomarkers was possibly associated with chemical contamination and also with the high fluctuation of physico-chemical characteristics of the sites. The integrated biomarker response values found in the five sites is in good agreement with hydrocarbon and trace metal concentrations detected in the water and sediments of the stressful places where crabs are living.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to determine the toxic effect of a lethal concentration of six different commercially used textile dyes on the 46th stage of Xenopus laevis tadpoles. The tadpoles were exposed to Astrazon Red FBL, Astrazon Blue FGRL, Remazol Red RR, Remazol Turquoise Blue G-A, Cibacron Red FN-3G, and Cibacron Blue FN-R for 168 h in static test conditions, and thus, 168-h median lethal concentrations (LC(50)s) of each dye were determined to be 0.35, 0.13, 112, 7, 359, and 15.8 mg/L, respectively. Also, to evaluate the sublethal effects of each dye, tadpoles were exposed to different concentrations of dyes (with respect to 168-h LC(50)s) for 24 h. The alteration of selected enzyme activities was tested. For this aim, glutathione S-transferase (GST), carboxylesterase, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were assayed. After dye exposure, the GST induction or inhibition and LDH induction indicated some possible mechanisms of oxidative stress and deterioration in aerobic respiration processes induced by the tested dyes. Findings of the study suggest that selected biomarker enzymes are useful in understanding the toxic mechanisms of these dyes in X. laevis tadpoles as early warning indicators. Therefore, these selected biomarkers may evaluate the effect of environmental factors, such as textile dye effluents and other industrial pollutants, on amphibians in biomonitoring studies.

Abstract
Some species of fish are more tolerant of rotenone, a commonly used non-specific piscicide, than others. This species-specific tolerance to rotenone has been thought to be associated with the uptake and the efficiency at which the chemical is detoxified. However, rotenone stimulates oxidative stress and superoxides, which are also toxic. Understanding the modes in which fish physiologically respond to rotenone is important in developing improved protocols for its application in controlling aquatic nuisance species. Using a molecular approach, we investigated the physiological and molecular mechanisms of rotenone resistance. Species-specific responses were observed when rotenone-sensitive silver, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and both rotenone-resistant bighead carp, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, and bigmouth buffalo, Ictiobus cyprinellus, were exposed to rotenone. Rotenone levels in plasma were highest 90 min after exposure in both silver carp and bigmouth buffalo, but bigmouth buffalo tolerated over twice the burden (ng mL(-1) g(-1)) than silver carp. Expression of genes related with detoxification (cyp1a and gst) increased in silver carp, but either decreased or remained the same in bighead carp. Genes linked with oxidative stress in the cytosol (gpx, cat and sod1) and hsp70 increased only in silver carp after a 6-h exposure. Expression of genes associated with oxidative stress in the mitochondria (sod2 and ucp2) differed between silver carp and bighead carp. Expression of sod2 changed minimally in bighead carp, but expression of ucp2 linearly increased to nearly 85-fold of the level prior to exposure. Expression of sod2 and ucp2 did not change until 6 h in silver carp. Use of sod1 and sod2 to combat oxidative stress results in hydrogen peroxide production, while use of ucp2 produces nitric oxide, a chemical known to inhibit apoptosis. We conclude that the mechanism at which a fish handles oxidative stress plays an important role in the tolerance to rotenone.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the activity of several biomarkers in carp, Cyprinus carpio L., to determine their response to xenobiotics, such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in the Meriç Delta. Fish were collected from contaminated sites and from areas regarded as relatively less contaminated in four sampling periods. Hepatic glutathione S-transferase (GST), carboxylesterase (CaE), lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, and acid phosphatase activities were measured as biomarkers in the fish. For all fish, the condition factor and hepatosomatic index, were calculated to determine the condition of the fish. The results of this study indicated that the mean GST activity showed an increase in fish from the Meriç-Ergene junction site and a decrease in Enez site with respect to fish from Meriç site. Furthermore, the study shows that spatial and temporal changes of biomarkers such as GST and CaE might be useful for the assessment of environmental contamination in the Meriç Delta.

Abstract
This study examines seasonal changes in the activities of selected biomarkers in carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) from Karakaya Dam Lake and evaluates the influence of gender and environmental factors on those activities. Physicochemical characteristics of water were evaluated in the lakewater. Fish were sampled on seasonal basis, and liver ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase, plasma lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase, and brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities were assayed. Plasma vitellogenin level and hepatosomatic index and condition factors were also determined. Strong seasonal variations were observed but there were no gender differences among selected markers. The highest vitellogenin level of male fish was detected as 606ng/mL which represents the estrogenicity of water in the lake in September 2005. In addition, the seasonal changes of some biomarkers such as EROD and AChE showed that the lake may be at risk of pollution by some xenobiotics arising from agricultural and/or industrial activities.

Abstract
The biochemical response of Mediteranean Crab (Carcinus maenas) collected at five stations of Monastir Bay and from Kuriat station as control was studied using a set of complementary biomarkers. The catalase, glutathione S-transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, acetycholinesterase activities; and metallothionein and malonediladehyde levels in gills were evaluated. Results revealed differences among sites in relation to each specific biomarker. Hence, a suite of biomarkers can be used to discriminate sampling sites according to types of pollution, reflecting differing conditions of anthropogenic impact. Based on Integrated Biomarker Response, the highest values and critical biochemical alteration were observed at Khniss and Ksibat in response to urban and industrial discharges and the lowest IBR value was found at reference site. The current study has shown clearly that a biomarker-based index is usefulness tool in the monitoring Tunisian coast using C. maenas as sentinel specie. Further studies in progress to investigate the seasonal variations of IBR levels and its relationship to pollutants concentrations in the sediment, gills and digestive gland of Carcinus maenas from Monastir Bay.
