Abstract
Although immunization can dramatically curb the mortality and morbidity associated with vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccination uptake remains suboptimal in many areas of the world. Here, in this meta-analysis, we analysed the results from 88 eligible randomized controlled trials testing interventions to increase vaccination uptake with 1,628,768 participants from 17 countries with variable development levels (for example, Human Development Index ranging from 0.485 to 0.955). We estimated the efficacy of seven intervention strategies including increasing access to vaccination, sending vaccination reminders, providing incentives, supplying information, correcting misinformation, promoting both active and passive motivation and teaching behavioural skills. We showed that the odds of vaccination were 1.5 (95% confidence interval, 1.27 to 1.77) times higher for intervention than control conditions. Among the intervention strategies, using incentives and increasing access were most promising in improving vaccination uptake, with the access strategy being particularly effective in countries with lower incomes and less access to healthcare.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted a systematic review to assess the scope and effectiveness of interventions to improve human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination in Africa from 2006 to 2021. STUDY DESIGN Systematic review. METHODS Four databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL and PsycINFO) were searched for articles published between 2006 and 2021. Articles were screened and included based on eligibility criteria using DistillerSR (Version 2.35). Data were extracted and reported using a narrative synthesis. A quality assessment was also conducted for each study using validated quality appraisal tools. RESULTS Out of 7603 articles identified by a systematic search, 18 articles met the inclusion criteria. Included studies comprised impact evaluation and cross-sectional studies published between 2012 and 2021 and conducted in eight African countries namely: Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mali, and Malawi. Study quality ranged from high to low quality. Interventions comprised fifteen educational and three multicomponent interventions. Out of thirteen impact evaluation studies (all educational interventions), twelve studies were effective in increasing HPV vaccine uptake and/or improving participants' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about the vaccine. Across five cross-sectional studies (two educational and three multicomponent interventions), HPV vaccine uptake rates ranged from 34% to 93.3%, with a consensus on safety and effectiveness in 67.9%-90.3% of participants post-intervention. CONCLUSION Educational and multicomponent interventions have been implemented to improve HPV vaccination in Africa. While educational interventions have proven effective at improving HPV vaccine uptake, a more diverse range of interventions with robust impact evaluation study designs are needed to strengthen the available evidence and improve vaccine uptake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oncogenic types of human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection cause substantial morbidity and mortality in Nigeria. Nigeria has low cervical cancer screening and vaccination rates, suggesting the need for community engagement to enhance reach and uptake. We organised a designathon to identify community-led, innovative approaches to promote HPV screening and vaccination for women and girls, respectively, in Nigeria. A designathon is a three-phase participatory process informed by design thinking that includes the preparation phase that includes soliciting innovative ideas from end-users, an intensive collaborative event to co-create intervention components, and follow-up activities. METHODS We organised a three-phase designathon for women (30-65yrs) and girls (11-26yrs) in Nigeria. First, we launched a national crowdsourcing open call for ideas on community-driven strategies to support HPV screening among women and vaccination among girls. The open call was promoted widely on social media and at in-person gatherings. All eligible entries were graded by judges and 16 exceptional teams (with 4-6members each). All six geo-political zones of Nigeria were invited to join an in-person event held over three days in Lagos to refine their ideas and present them to a panel of expert judges. The ideas from teams were reviewed and scored based on relevance, feasibility, innovation, potential impact, and mother-daughter team dynamics. We present quantitative data on people who submitted and themes from the textual submissions. RESULTS We received a total of 612 submissions to the open call from mother-daughter dyads. Participants submitted ideas via a website designated for the contest (n = 392), in-person (n = 99), email (n = 31), or via an instant messaging application (n = 92). Overall, 470 were eligible for judging after initial screening. The average age of participants for daughters was 19 years and 39 years for mothers. Themes from the top 16 proposals included leveraging local leaders (5/16), faith-based networks (4/16), educational systems (4/16), and other community networks (7/16) to promote awareness of cervical cancer prevention services. After an in-person collaborative event, eight teams were selected to join an innovation training boot camp, for capacity building to implement ideas. CONCLUSIONS Innovative strategies are needed to promote HPV screening for mothers and vaccination for girls in Nigeria. Our designathon was able to facilitate Nigerian mother-daughter teams to develop cervical cancer prevention strategies. Implementation research is needed to assess the effectiveness of these strategies.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is routinely recommended for adolescents aged 11 or 12 years but can begin at age 9. On-time HPV vaccination by the thirteenth birthday has proven to be effective in preventing HPV cancer and pre-cancer. However, HPV coverage rates continue to lag behind other routinely recommended vaccinations for adolescents. A promising approach to improving coverage is to start HPV vaccination at age 9. This approach has been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Cancer Society. Benefits of this approach include increased time to complete vaccination series by the thirteenth birthday, additional spacing of recommended vaccines, and a more concentrated focus on cancer prevention messaging. While promising, little is known about how and if existing evidence-based interventions and approaches can be used to promote starting HPV vaccination at age 9. Implementation science frameworks offer scientific direction in how to adapt current and develop new interventions to promote starting HPV vaccination at age 9 and accelerate dissemination and prevent HPV cancers.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic, although a profound reminder of endured injustices by and the disparate impact of infectious diseases on Indigenous populations, has also served as an example of Indigenous strength and the ability to thrive anew. Many infectious diseases share common risk factors that are directly tied to the ongoing effects of colonisation. We provide historical context and case studies that illustrate both challenges and successes related to infectious disease mitigation in Indigenous populations in the USA and Canada. Infectious disease disparities, driven by persistent inequities in socioeconomic determinants of health, underscore the urgent need for action. We call on governments, public health leaders, industry representatives, and researchers to reject harmful research practices and to adopt a framework for achieving sustainable improvements in the health of Indigenous people that is both adequately resourced and grounded in respect for tribal sovereignty and Indigenous knowledge.

Abstract
Despite the availability of effective and safe human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines that reduce the incidence and impact of cervical cancer and other cancers, HPV vaccine coverage rates remain persistently low and the cervical cancer burden disproportionately high among Indigenous people globally. This study aimed to systematically identify, appraise, and summarize the literature on documented barriers and supports to HPV vaccination in Indigenous populations internationally. Forty-three studies were included and an inductive, qualitative, thematic synthesis was applied. We report on 10 barrier themes and 7 support themes to vaccine uptake, and provide a quantitative summary of metrics. Focusing on Indigenous perspectives reported in the literature, we propose recommendations on community-research collaboration, culturally safe intergenerational and gender-equitable community HPV vaccine education, as well as multi-level transparency to ensure informed consent is secured in the context of reciprocal relationships. Although the voices of key informant groups (e.g., HPV-vaccine eligible youth and community Elders) are underrepresented in the literature, the identification of barriers and supports to HPV vaccination in a global Indigenous context might help inform researchers and health policy makers who aim to improve HPV vaccine uptake in Indigenous populations.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of large-scale campaigns to facilitate vaccination adherence. Social media presents unique opportunities to reach broader audiences and reduces the costs of conducting national or global campaigns aimed at achieving herd immunity. Nonetheless, few studies have reviewed the effectiveness of prior social media campaigns for vaccination adherence, and several prior studies have shown that social media campaigns do not increase uptake rates. Hence, our objective is to conduct a systematic review to examine the effectiveness of social media campaigns and to identify the reasons for the mixed results of prior studies. Our methodology began with a search of seven databases, which resulted in the identification of 92 interventions conducted over digital media. Out of these 92 studies, only 15 adopted social media campaigns for immunization. We analyzed these 15 studies, along with a coding scheme we developed based on reviews of both health interventions and social media campaigns. Multiple coders, who were knowledgeable about social media campaigns and healthcare, analyzed the 15 cases and obtained an acceptable level of inter-coder reliability (> .80). The results from our systematic review show that only a few social media campaigns have succeeded in enhancing vaccination adherence. In addition, few campaigns have utilized known critical success factors of social media to induce vaccination adherence. Based on these findings, we discuss a set of research questions that informatics scholars should consider when identifying opportunities for using social media to resolve one of the most resilient challenges in public health. Finally, we conclude by discussing how the insights drawn from our systematic reviews contribute to advancing theories, such as social influence and the health belief model, into the realm of social media-based health interventions.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination completion rates in Asian-American populations are substantially lower than most White Americans. Our objective was to identify the knowledge, perceptions, and decision-making processes about HPV vaccinations in the Hmong population, an Asian-American group with increased risks of HPV-related cancers. We conducted eight focus groups with Hmong adolescents (n = 12) and parents (n = 13) to learn about barriers, facilitators, and decision-making processes regarding general vaccinations and the HPV vaccine. The focus group results were analyzed using thematic analysis, informed by the socioecological model and asset lens. Findings showed that at the individual level, Hmong adolescents and parents had low HPV and HPV vaccine awareness levels (barrier) and strong desires to learn about HPV and the HPV vaccine (facilitator). Community-level barriers included salient narratives about traumatic experiences with vaccines and vaccine research, while facilitators included strong community connections. At the institutional level, barriers included structural constraints in health care settings, while facilitators included ease of obtaining vaccines at school-based clinics and provider authoritative decision-making. Additionally, a range of decision-making processes between parents, adolescents, and providers were present, with parents expressing a strong appeal to engage in more shared decision-making with providers. A linguistically and culturally specific HPV educational program for Hmong adolescents and parents could address the barriers and build on facilitators and assets to promote HPV vaccine uptake in this growing Asian-American community.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents should receive timely doses of recommended vaccinations. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination approval for adolescents presented an opportunity for community pharmacists to address gaps in adolescent immunization schedules. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this research were to (1) identify adolescent immunization gaps, (2) identify number of patients receiving recommended vaccination(s) at the community pharmacy, and (3) determine how many vaccinations were administered after the intervention. METHODS Three pharmacies conducted the prospective intervention. Adolescents aged 11-17 years initiating the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination series were eligible to receive a personalized vaccination recommendation (PVR), which included up to 3 other vaccinations. State immunization information systems were assessed after dose 1 of the COVID-19 vaccine to create the recommendation(s) and reassessed 6 months after providing the PVR for accepted recommendations. Patient demographics and number of vaccinations administered were assessed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS Of the 225 adolescents who received COVID-19 vaccine dose 1, 74.7%, 75.1%, and 83.1% were indicated to receive tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap), meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY), or human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, respectively. Thirty-three (14.7%) adolescents were up to date on all 3 vaccinations assessed. Of the 225 adolescents, 180 returned to the same location for COVID-19 vaccine dose 2 and received a PVR. Forty-two caregivers reported that their adolescent previously received 1 or more of the recommended vaccinations, indicating that state immunization information systems were inaccurate. Six months after the PVRs were given, 24 vaccinations had been administered. CONCLUSIONS Most adolescents presenting for a COVID-19 vaccine were indicated, according to state immunization information systems, to receive at least 1 additional vaccination. After pharmacist-provided PVR and education, vaccine uptake occurred. Considering caregiver-reported inaccuracies, pharmacists should be cognizant of potential discrepancies when providing PVRs. In addition, this study highlights the value of a state immunization information system.

Abstract
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons bear a disproportionate burden of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers and face unique challenges to HPV vaccination. We undertook a systematic review to synthesize the available evidence on HPV vaccination barriers and factors among AI/AN persons in the United States. We searched fourteen bibliographic databases, four citation indexes, and six gray literature sources from July 2006 to January 2021. We did not restrict our search by study design, setting, or publication type. Two reviewers independently screened the titles and abstracts (stage 1) and full-text (stage 2) of studies for selection. Both reviewers then independently extracted data using a data extraction form and undertook quality appraisal and bias assessment using the modified Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. We conducted thematic synthesis to generate descriptive themes. We included a total of 15 records after identifying 3017, screening 1415, retrieving 203, and assessing 41 records. A total of 21 unique barriers to HPV vaccination were reported across 15 themes at the individual (n = 12) and clinic or provider (n = 3) levels. At the individual level, the most common barriers to vaccination-safety and lack of knowledge about the HPV vaccine-were each reported in the highest number of studies (n = 9; 60%). The findings from this review signal the need to develop interventions that target AI/AN populations to increase the adoption and coverage of HPV vaccination. Failure to do so may widen disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Vaccinations are recognized as a feasible, cost-effective public health intervention for reducing the burden and associated mortality of many infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of potential interventions to improve the uptake of vaccines among children and adolescents. METHODS We performed a literature search until December 2020. Eligible studies were identified using Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, PubMed, and other sources. We included studies conducted on children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 years. Studies comprised of hospitalized children and those with comorbid conditions were excluded. Two authors independently performed the meta-analysis. RESULTS Findings from 120 studies (123 articles), of which 95 were meta-analyzed, reveal that vaccination education may increase overall vaccination coverage by 19% (risk ratio [RR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-1.26), reminders by 15% (RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.11-1.18), interventions for providers by 13% (RR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.19), financial incentives by 67% (RR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.40-1.99), and multilevel interventions by 25% (RR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.10-1.41). The impact of school-based clinics and policy and legislation on overall vaccination coverage is still uncertain, and no impact of a multicomponent intervention on overall vaccination coverage was found. CONCLUSIONS Educational interventions, reminders, provider-directed interventions, financial incentives, and multilevel interventions may improve vaccination coverage among school-aged children and adolescents.

Abstract
Racial and ethnic minorities in the United States face higher risks of human papillomavirus (HPV) and are less likely to benefit from HPV vaccines. Effective HPV vaccine promotion efforts need to acknowledge and adapt to the cultural characteristics of these minority groups. This systematic review examines and evaluates the cultural adaptations in the HPV vaccine intervention studies conducted in racial and ethnic minority communities in the United States. We searched five databases and identified 26 peer-reviewed English-language journal articles published between 2010 and 2019. These articles were analyzed using Healey et al.'s (2017) cultural adaptation framework for community health interventions. Almost all of these interventions involved some cultural adaptation. However, there is a lack of use of theories in guiding intervention design, lack of systematic, planned cultural adaptations and insufficient in-depth understanding of the targeted population's cultural characteristics associated with their HPV-related attitudes, beliefs and behaviors. Future intervention studies should identify specific cultural characteristics related to vaccine attitudes and behaviors to create more targeted cultural adaptations in HPV vaccine promotion.

Abstract
CONTEXT Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake remains suboptimal in the United States. Public education is considered an important aspect of increasing vaccination rates. OBJECTIVES We systematically reviewed the literature on the impact of public education on HPV vaccine uptake. DESIGN PubMed was searched to identify studies published between January 1, 2007, and April 30, 2018, meeting the following inclusion criteria: the study was conducted in the US, education was directed toward the public, and the research included HPV vaccine uptake and/or completion as outcomes. RESULTS A total of 3764 studies were screened, and 30 published studies were included in the review. Among those, 13 focused on parent/guardian education, 8 on young adults, 6 on parent/daughter dyads, 1 focused only on adolescents, and 2 studies recruited a mixed-age population. Studies that included parents and young adults and were delivered by experts led to increased uptake of HPV vaccination (n = 14). A majority of the studies included female and Non-Hispanic White population (n = 20). Less than a third of studies included minority groups: Hispanic (n = 4), African American (n = 1), Cambodian American (n = 1), Indian American (n = 1), Korean American (n = 1), and combined Haitian and African American (n = 1) population. Minority group interventions that provided individually tailored messages, addressed misconceptions, removed barriers to vaccination, and engaged parents and community members improved HPV vaccine acceptance (n = 5). CONCLUSION Interventions that delivered HPV-related education by authoritative sources and included parents improved HPV vaccination rates among adolescents and young adults. Community engagement played an important role in vaccine uptake among minority populations. Future studies should focus on male participants and minority populations to reduce disparities in HPV-related cancer incidence and HPV vaccine coverage.

Abstract
Background The inclusion of protective factors (“assets”) are increasingly supported in developing culturally grounded interventions for American Indian (AI) populations. This study sought to explore AI women’s cultural assets, perspectives, and teachings to inform the development of a culturally grounded, intergenerational intervention to prevent substance abuse and teenage pregnancy among AI females. Methods Adult self-identified AI women (N = 201) who reside on the Navajo Nation completed a cross-sectional survey between May and October 2018. The 21-question survey explored health communication around the transition to womanhood, cultural assets, perceptions of mother–daughter reproductive health communication, and intervention health topics. Univariate descriptive analyses, chi squared, and fisher’s exact tests were conducted. Results Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 82 years, with a mean age of 44 ± 15.5 years. Women self-identified as mothers (95; 48%), aunts (59; 30%), older sisters (55; 28%), grandmothers (37; 19%), and/or all of the aforementioned (50; 25%). 66% (N = 95) of women admired their mother/grandmother most during puberty; 29% (N = 58) of women were 10–11 years old when someone first spoke to them about menarche; and 86% (N=172) felt their culture was a source of strength. 70% (N = 139) would have liked to learn more about reproductive health when they were a teenager; 67% (N = 134) felt Diné mothers are able to provide reproductive health education; 51% (N = 101) reported having a rite of passage event, with younger women desiring an event significantly more than older women. Responses also indicate a disruption of cultural practices due to government assimilation policies, as well as the support of male relatives during puberty. Conclusions Results informed intervention content and delivery, including target age group, expanded caregiver eligibility criteria, lesson delivery structure and format, and protective cultural teachings. Other implications include the development of a complementary fatherhood and/or family-based intervention to prevent Native girls’ substance use and teen pregnancy. Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Although most HPV infections are transient and asymptomatic, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types may results in diseases. Although there are currently three effective and safe prophylactic HPV vaccines that are used across the world, HPV vaccination coverage remains low. This review evaluates the effects of the interventions to improve HPV vaccination coverage. We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform and checked the reference lists of relevant articles for eligible studies. Thirty-five studies met inclusion criteria. Our review found that various evaluated interventions have improved HPV vaccination coverage, including narrative education, outreach plus reminders, reminders, financial incentives plus reminders, brief motivational behavioral interventions, provider prompts, training, training plus assessment and feedback, consultation, funding, and multicomponent interventions. However, the evaluation of these intervention was conducted in high-income countries, mainly the United States of America. There is, therefore, a need for studies to evaluate the effect of these interventions in low-and middle-income countries, where there is a high burden of HPV and limited HPV vaccination programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE HPV vaccine uptake in U.S. East African adolescents is low. We developed and evaluated a culturally-targeted interactive educational intervention for East African immigrant mothers to increase HPV-vaccine-related knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to vaccinate adolescent children. METHODS Eligible mothers had ≥ 1 11-17-year-old child and reported all children's HPV vaccination status as unvaccinated or unknown. The intervention was delivered via 10 dinners in the Seattle metropolitan area (8 with the Somali community, 2 with the Ethiopian community). Educational presentations and pre/post-tests on knowledge, attitudes, and intentions were conducted in the participants' native language by a co-ethnic physician. Pre/post differences in responses were evaluated with McNemar's tests and GEE models. HPV vaccination uptake 6-months post-intervention was evaluated using state immunization registry data. RESULTS Of 115 participating mothers, most (84%) were Somali and < 40 years of age (60%). Median years of formal education was 8 (range 0-16), and 61% reported a household income <$25,000. Knowledge of HPV/HPV-vaccines was low pre-intervention, with correct responses ranging from 4% to 39% (61%-91% of responses were "not sure"); correct post-intervention responses ranged from 29% to 97%. Pre-intervention, only 12% of mothers thought they had enough information to make a decision about vaccination, compared to 90% post-intervention. Pre-intervention, only 16% of mothers reported that they were somewhat or very likely to vaccinate their child, compared to 83% post-intervention. All pre/post comparisons were statistically significantly different (p < 0.0001). Although mothers were more likely to report correct HPV-related knowledge and positive vaccine attitudes and intentions post-intervention, only two mothers' children initiated HPV vaccination within 6 months after the intervention. CONCLUSIONS Results illustrate that a culturally targeted educational intervention effectively increased East African mothers' HPV vaccine-related knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to vaccinate their adolescent children. Future research should identify additional intervention components that can bridge the gap between intention and behavior to facilitate HPV vaccine uptake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asplenic or splenectomized patients have a higher risk (ranging from 10 to 50-fold) than the general population of developing an overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI). Thus, they should receive specific vaccinations to prevent bacterial infections and influenza. The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate vaccination coverage (VC) with the recommended vaccines among splenectomized patients; strategies recommended in those studies to improve VC worldwide are considered as well. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar and ISI Web of Knowledge databases were searched. Research papers, short reports, reviews, and meta-analyses published between January 1, 2010 and July 18, 2020 were included; no geographic restrictions were included. Twenty-four studies were included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS For anti-pneumococcal vaccination, coverage was 55.1% (95%CI = 41.0-69.2%), for anti-Hib 48.3% (95%CI = 34.3-52.3%), for anti-meningococcal C/ACYW135 33.7% (95%CI = 23.6-43.9%), for anti-meningococcal B 13.3% (95%CI = 7.0-19.5%) and for anti-influenza 53.2% (95%CI = 22.0-84.4%). Most studies determined a lack of adherence to international guidelines by healthcare workers and suggested the need to better educate health professionals in the management of post-splenectomy patients. CONCLUSIONS The meta-analysis showed the suboptimal immunization coverage for the vaccines recommended for asplenic patients. Greater efforts must be made by public health professionals to increase VC in this group of patients at risk. Introducing specific prophylaxis protocols in the clinical routine seems to guarantee better immunization compliance in those patients.

Abstract
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a well-known fundamental strategy in the prevention of cervical cancer, as it is always caused by HPV infection. In fact, primary prevention of the infection corresponds to primary prevention of HPV-related cancers and other diseases. Since an effective prevention at the population level is the final goal, it is mandatory for healthcare systems to achieve a high HPV vaccination coverage among the adolescents to reduce the circulation of the virus and the burden of HPV-related diseases. This research identified, through a systematic literature review, 38 papers on strategies adopted to increase HPV vaccination coverage among adolescents. The evaluated strategies targeted adolescents/parents and/or healthcare providers and could be grouped in three main types: (1) reminder-based, (2) education, information, and communication activities, and (3) multicomponent strategies. Several types of strategy, such as those relied only on reminders and integrating different interventions, showed a positive impact on vaccination coverage. Nonetheless, the heterogeneity of the interventions suggests the importance to adapt such strategies to the specific national/local contexts to maximize vaccination coverage.

Abstract
Minority youth represent a unique population for public health interventions given the social, economic, and cultural barriers they often face in accessing health services. Interventions to increase uptake of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in minority youth have the potential to reduce disparities in HPV infection and HPV-related cancers. This systematic review assesses the effectiveness of interventions to increase HPV vaccine uptake, measured as vaccine series initiation and series completion, among adolescents and young adults, aged 9-26 years old, identifying as a racial and ethnic minority or sexual and gender minority (SGM) group in high-income countries. Of the 3013 citations produced by a systematic search of three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) in November 2018, nine studies involving 9749 participants were selected for inclusion. All studies were conducted in the United States and were published from 2015 to 2018. Interventions utilized education, vaccine appointment reminders, and negotiated interviewing to increase vaccination. Participants were Black or African American (44.4%), Asian (33.3%), Hispanic or Latinx (22.2%), American Indian or Alaska Native (11.1%), and SGM (22.2%). Studies enrolled parent-child dyads (33.3%), parents alone (11.1%), and youth alone (55.6%). Vaccine series initiation ranged from 11.1% to 84% and series completion ranged from 5.6% to 74.2% post-intervention. Educational and appointment reminder interventions may improve HPV vaccine series initiation and completion in minority youth in the U.S. Given the lack of high quality, adequately powered studies, further research is warranted to identify effective strategies for improving HPV vaccine uptake for minority populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent vaccination has received increased attention since the Global Vaccine Action Plan's call to extend the benefits of immunisation more equitably beyond childhood. In recent years, many programmes have been launched to increase the uptake of different vaccines in adolescent populations; however, vaccination coverage among adolescents remains suboptimal. Therefore, understanding and evaluating the various interventions that can be used to improve adolescent vaccination is crucial. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of interventions to improve vaccine uptake among adolescents. SEARCH METHODS In October 2018, we searched the following databases: CENTRAL, MEDLINE Ovid, Embase Ovid, and eight other databases. In addition, we searched two clinical trials platforms, electronic databases of grey literature, and reference lists of relevant articles. For related systematic reviews, we searched four databases. Furthermore, in May 2019, we performed a citation search of five other websites. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised trials, non-randomised trials, controlled before-after studies, and interrupted time series studies of adolescents (girls or boys aged 10 to 19 years) eligible for World Health Organization-recommended vaccines and their parents or healthcare providers. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently screened records, reviewed full-text articles to identify potentially eligible studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias, resolving discrepancies by consensus. For each included study, we calculated risk ratios (RR) or mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) where appropriate. We pooled study results using random-effects meta-analyses and assessed the certainty of the evidence using GRADE. MAIN RESULTS We included 16 studies (eight individually randomised trials, four cluster randomised trials, three non-randomised trials, and one controlled before-after study). Twelve studies were conducted in the USA, while there was one study each from: Australia, Sweden, Tanzania, and the UK. Ten studies had unclear or high risk of bias. We categorised interventions as recipient-oriented, provider-oriented, or health systems-oriented. The interventions targeted adolescent boys or girls or both (seven studies), parents (four studies), and providers (two studies). Five studies had mixed participants that included adolescents and parents, adolescents and healthcare providers, and parents and healthcare providers. The outcomes included uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) (11 studies); hepatitis B (three studies); and tetanus-diphtheria-acellular-pertussis (Tdap), meningococcal, HPV, and influenza (three studies) vaccines among adolescents. Health education improves HPV vaccine uptake compared to usual practice (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.16 to 1.76; I² = 0%; 3 studies, 1054 participants; high-certainty evidence). In addition, one large study provided evidence that a complex multi-component health education intervention probably results in little to no difference in hepatitis B vaccine uptake compared to simplified information leaflets on the vaccine (RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.97 to 0.99; 17,411 participants; moderate-certainty evidence). Financial incentives may improve HPV vaccine uptake compared to usual practice (RR 1.45, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.99; 1 study, 500 participants; low-certainty evidence). However, we are uncertain whether combining health education and financial incentives has an effect on hepatitis B vaccine uptake, compared to usual practice (RR 1.38, 95% CI 0.96 to 2.00; 1 study, 104 participants; very low certainty evidence). Mandatory vaccination probably leads to a large increase in hepatitis B vaccine uptake compared to usual practice (RR 3.92, 95% CI 3.65 to 4.20; 1 study, 6462 participants; moderate-certainty evidence). Provider prompts probably make little or no difference compared to usual practice, on completion of Tdap (OR 1.28, 95% CI 0.59 to 2.80; 2 studies, 3296 participants), meningococcal (OR 1.09, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.79; 2 studies, 3219 participants), HPV (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.55 to 1.81; 2 studies, 859 participants), and influenza (OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.34; 2 studies, 1439 participants) vaccination schedules (moderate-certainty evidence). Provider education with performance feedback may increase the proportion of adolescents who are offered and accept HPV vaccination by clinicians, compared to usual practice. Compared to adolescents visiting non-participating clinicians (in the usual practice group), the adolescents visiting clinicians in the intervention group were more likely to receive the first dose of HPV during preventive visits (5.7 percentage points increase) and during acute visits (0.7 percentage points for the first and 5.6 percentage points for the second doses of HPV) (227 clinicians and more than 200,000 children; low-certainty evidence). A class-based school vaccination strategy probably leads to slightly higher HPV vaccine uptake than an age-based school vaccination strategy (RR 1.09, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.13; 1 study, 5537 participants; moderate-certainty evidence). A multi-component provider intervention (including an education session, repeated contacts, individualised feedback, and incentives) probably improves uptake of HPV vaccine compared to usual practice (moderate-certainty evidence). A multi-component intervention targeting providers and parents involving social marketing and health education may improve HPV vaccine uptake compared to usual practice (RR 1.41, 95% CI 1.25 to 1.59; 1 study, 25,869 participants; low-certainty evidence). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Various strategies have been evaluated to improve adolescent vaccination including health education, financial incentives, mandatory vaccination, and class-based school vaccine delivery. However, most of the evidence is of low to moderate certainty. This implies that while this research provides some indication of the likely effect of these interventions, the likelihood that the effects will be substantially different is high. Therefore, additional research is needed to further enhance adolescent immunisation strategies, especially in low- and middle-income countries where there are limited adolescent vaccination programmes. In addition, it is critical to understand the factors that influence hesitancy, acceptance, and demand for adolescent vaccination in different settings. This is the topic of an ongoing Cochrane qualitative evidence synthesis, which may help to explain why and how some interventions were more effective than others in increasing adolescent HPV vaccination coverage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is an important public health issue among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women. However, there are very few published studies describing the evaluation of breast health promotion programs among AI/AN women. PURPOSE To describe the formative evaluation of a multi-component intervention to promote mammography screening in an AI community in rural Oklahoma. METHODS A comprehensive process evaluation plan with emphasis on context, reach, dose received, dose delivered, and fidelity was developed. Data collection included mixed research methodology and impact was assessed via one group pre/post research design. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistical analysis and content analysis. The study utilized a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. RESULTS Process evaluation revealed a relatively high reach within the priority population for both components (clinic and community) and a moderate implementation. Focus group research showed that participants were overall satisfied with program implementation. The intervention was feasible to implement in real-world settings. TRANSLATION TO HEALTH EDUCATION PRACTICE Community-based evaluation of breast health promotion programs among AI communities is challenging, as one has to balance methodological rigor with practical constraints. The use of an evaluation plan, mixed methods and a collaborative approach are useful tools in conducting the evaluation.

Objectives (1) Define parental perceptions of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine and awareness of vaccine administration at community pharmacies (2) Describe parental intentions to have children vaccinated against HPV (3) Describe reasoning process behind parental vaccination intentions (4) Assess impact of pharmacist-led education on these perceptions and intentions. Methods This was a prospective pretest, posttest study with a convenience sample conducted at parenting groups throughout northern West Virginia in 2018. Participants, a total of 34 parents/guardians, attended an educational session regarding Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination with immediate pre/post survey. The survey asked participants about their HPV vaccination history, personal perceptions regarding the HPV vaccine, age and gender of their children, overall immunization status of the child, current intent regarding the HPV vaccine, parents' preferred resources for vaccine information, awareness of HPV vaccine availability in community pharmacies, as well as parent developed environment (rural, suburban, urban, etc.), race, age, marital status, education, and income level. Results Following intervention, intention to vaccinate according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations increased from 35% (n=12) to 44% (n=15). The percentage of participants against vaccinating decreased from 23% (n=8) to 12% (n=4). Participants demonstrated increased awareness of HPV vaccine availability at community pharmacies, with awareness increasing from 32% (n=11) to 100% (n=34). Conclusions Pharmacist delivered education may be useful in increasing parent/legal guardian awareness of immunization services as well as intention to vaccinate their child.

Abstract
Eradication of cervical cancer involves the expansion of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage and the development of efficient screening guidelines that take vaccination into account. In Korea, the HPV National Immunization Program was launched in 2016 and is expected to shift the prevalence of HPV genotypes in the country, among other effects. The experiences of another countries that implement national immunization programs should be applied to Korea. If HPV vaccines spread nationwide with broader coverage, after a few decades, cervical intraepithelial lesions or invasive cancer should become a rare disease, leading to a predictable decrease in the positive predictive value of cervical screening cytology. HPV testing is the primary screening tool for cervical cancer and has replaced traditional cytology-based guidelines. The current screening strategy in Korea does not differentiate women who have received complete vaccination from those who are unvaccinated. However, in the post-vaccination era, newly revised policies will be needed. We also discuss on how to increase the vaccination rate in adolescence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine factors associated with parents' uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines for their children. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES Cochrane Library, AIDSLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Social Sciences Abstracts, Ovid MEDLINE, Scholars Portal, Social Sciences Citation Index and Dissertation Abstracts International from inception through November 2017. METHODS We included studies that sampled parents and assessed uptake of HPV vaccines for their children (≤18 years) and/or sociodemographics, knowledge, attitudes or other factors associated with uptake. Study risk of bias was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project tool. We pooled data using random-effects meta-analysis and conducted moderation analyses to examine variance in uptake by sex of child and parent. RESULTS Seventy-nine studies on 840 838 parents across 15 countries were included. The pooled proportion of parents' uptake of HPV vaccines for their children was 41.5% (range: 0.7%-92.8%), twofold higher for girls (46.5%) than for boys (20.3%). In the meta-analysis of 62 studies, physician recommendation (r=0.46 (95% CI 0.34 to 0.56)) had the greatest influence on parents' uptake, followed by HPV vaccine safety concerns (r=-0.31 (95% CI -0.41 to -0.16)), routine child preventive check-up, past 12 months (r=0.22 (95% CI 0.11 to 0.33)) and parents' belief in vaccines (r=0.19 (95% CI 0.08 to 0.29)). Health insurance-covered HPV vaccination (r=0.16 (95% CI 0.04 to 0.29)) and lower out-of-pocket cost (r=-0.15 (95% CI -0.22 to -0.07)) had significant effects on uptake. We found significant moderator effects for sex of child. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate suboptimal levels of HPV vaccine uptake, twofold lower among boys, that may be improved by increasing physician recommendations, addressing parental safety concerns and promoting parents' positive beliefs about vaccines, in addition to expanding insurance coverage and reducing out-of-pocket costs. Limitations of this meta-analysis include the lack of intervention studies and high risk of bias in most studies reviewed. Further studies should disaggregate HPV vaccine uptake by sex of child and parent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In England, uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to prevent HPV-related cancer is lower among girls from ethnic minority backgrounds. We aimed to explore the factors that prevented ethnic minority parents from vaccinating, compared to White British nonvaccinating parents and vaccinating ethnic minority parents. METHODS Interviews with 33 parents (n = 14 ethnic minority non-vaccinating, n = 10 White British nonvaccinating, and n = 9 ethnic minority vaccinating) explored parents' reasons for giving or withholding consent for HPV vaccination. Data were analysed using Framework Analysis. RESULTS Concerns about the vaccine were raised by all nonvaccinating ethnic minority parents, and they wanted information to address these concerns. External and internal influences affected parents' decisions, as well as parents' perceptions that HPV could be prevented using means other than vaccination. Reasons were not always exclusive to nonvaccinating ethnic minority parents, although some were, including a preference for abstinence from sex before marriage. Only ethnic minority parents wanted information provided via workshops. CONCLUSIONS Ethnic differences in HPV vaccination uptake may be partly explained by concerns that were only reported by parents from some ethnic groups. Interventions to improve uptake may need to tackle difficult topics like abstinence from sex before marriage, and use a targeted format.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Uptake of meningococcal vaccine (MCV) and tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine among adolescents has approached Healthy People 2020 goals, but human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination has not. This study evaluated an intervention using the 4 Pillars™ Practice Transformation Program to increase HPV, MCV and Tdap uptake among adolescents in primary care practices. METHODS Practices with at least 50 patients 11-17years old with estimated vaccination rates less than national goals, were assigned to intervention (n=11) and control (n=11) groups in a randomized controlled cluster trial; 9 intervention and 11 control sites completed the study. The baseline and active study periods were 7/1/2013-6/30/2014 and 7/1/2014-3/31/2015, respectively. Vaccination and demographic data for patients who had a visit in both study periods were derived from de-identified EMR extractions. Primary outcomes were vaccination rates and percentage point (PP) changes. Data were analyzed in 2015-16. RESULTS Among the cohort of 10,861 adolescent patients, 38% were 11-13years old; 50% were female; 18% were non-white; and 64% were commercially insured. Average baseline HPV initiation rates were 52.5% for intervention and 61.8% for control groups. After 9months, the intervention sites increased HPV initiation 10.2PP compared with 7.3PP in control sites (P<0.001); HPV series completion rates did not differ between groups. Implementation of >10 strategies to improve rates significantly increased the likelihood of HPV series initiation (OR=2.06, 95% CI=1.43, 2.96). CONCLUSIONS Using >10 strategies from the 4 Pillars™ Practice Transformation Program is effective for increasing HPV series initiation among adolescents. Clinical trial registry number: NCT02165722.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is an important public health issue among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women in the US. This article describes the design and implementation of a culturally sensitive intervention to promote breast health among AI/AN women through a hybrid model that incorporates clinical and community-based approaches. This is one of the first studies using this model addressing breast cancer disparities among AI/AN populations in the US. METHODS The Theory of Planned Behavior was used as the guiding framework of the intervention and Community Based Participatory Research was the primary vehicle for the intervention planning and implementation. Three preliminary studies took place that aimed to identify qualitatively and quantitatively what deterred or encouraged AI women to get past or future mammograms. The research results were shared with community members who, through a prioritization process, identified the theoretical focus of the intervention and its corresponding activities. The priority population consisted of AI women ages 40-74, with no recent mammogram, and no breast cancer history. RESULTS The intervention centered on the promotion of social modeling and physician recommendation. The main corresponding activities included enhancing patient-physician communication about screening mammography through a structured dialogue, receipt of a breast cancer brochure, participation in an inter-generational discussion group, and a congratulatory bracelet upon receipt of a mammogram. Environmental and policy related changes also were developed. CONCLUSION Creating a theory-based, culturally-sensitive intervention through tribal participatory research is a challenging approach towards eliminating breast cancer disparities among hard-to-reach populations.
