Framing Facets of Social Participation: Older Adults' Experiences of "Social Online Meetings"

Changing demographics with an increased proportion of older adults indicate the need to develop new health-promoting interventions where the potential of digitization is considered. The aim was to explore and create an understanding of how social online meetings are experienced by older adults. Interviews with older adults generated data that were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The participants were interviewed after participating in a digital health promotion group initiative provided in a municipality context. A core conceptual category and three subcategories reflected an intertwined process of discovering facets of social participation where internal reflections on personal values and needs were nurtured by an external driven process of becoming part of a group in an online context. Occupational therapists and other health and social care professionals need to consider the various facets of social participation when supporting older adults active and healthy aging.

Core components of project-based intervention after acquired brain injury: Delivering meaningful groups online

BACKGROUND

Rehabilitation for cognitive-communication impairments following brain injury can be complex given the heterogenous nature of impairments post injury. Project-based intervention has the potential to improve communication skills and create a meaningful real-life context where individuals collaborate to develop a concrete product, which benefits others. While evidence for this intervention is emerging, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted increased use of telehealth interventions to serve people with brain injury. This paper aims to describe a framework for the delivery of project-based intervention via telehealth within community rehabilitation settings; and present several case studies of telehealth groups completed in the United Kingdom and the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

A working group was formed to map the components of project-based intervention onto the rehabilitation treatment specification system (RTSS). This system is a conceptual framework that helps to explain the link between treatment theory and ingredients, allowing a clinician to clearly understand how and why a treatment works. First, a literature search was completed to identify eligible studies on project-based intervention after brain injury. Second, those studies were thematically mapped onto the RTSS to identify important intervention components. Third, the presence of these components was assessed for community brain injury groups delivered via telehealth in the United Kingdom and United States. These groups were further described using a taxonomy of social activities that help to describe the degree of meaningful social engagement.

RESULTS

The literature was described with a thematic RTSS summary. Treatment aims focus on skills training and self-efficacy, advocacy and self-empowerment, emotional well-being and quality of life, and collaboration and community belonging. Treatment ingredients involve a range of cognitive and behavioural supports to deliver meaningful activities and contexts to complete a project. Mechanisms of action involve learning by doing and cognitive and affective information processing. All four telehealth groups conducted in the United Kingdom and United States involved at least three treatment aims, >7 targets, and >8 treatment ingredients. All groups reported positive experiences from activities that involve working collaboratively to help others and contribute to society.

CONCLUSIONS

Project-based intervention delivered via telehealth has the potential for supporting people with acquired brain injury to improve their communication skills and engage in meaningful, collaborative activity. Application of the RTSS helps clinicians to understand the aims and therapeutic ingredients (or clinician activities) through which a person with brain injury may achieve specific treatment targets during the rehabilitation process.

What is already known on the subject Project-based interventions have the potential to improve cognitive, self-regulatory, behavioural and social communication skills, renegotiate identity and reaffirm sense of self, providing a positive impact on quality of life for persons with acquired brain injuries. Projects serve as a context for meaningful engagement for individuals in the chronic phase of traumatic brain injury recovery, without fulfilling work, family or social responsibilities. However, most published research has involved in-person projects and few projects have been delivered via telehealth. What this paper adds to existing knowledge While past published works have shared core principles of intervention, a variety of projects, durations, dosages and methods have been employed. The current paper provides a framework to support more consistent implementation. By mapping previous project-based interventions to the RTSS, clinicians will have a better understanding of the aims, targets, ingredients and theoretical underpinnings of project-based interventions. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shift to telehealth moved interventions to a virtual context. The four case projects in this paper demonstrate that it is possible to conduct project-based interventions via telehealth and provides a clear description to guide clinicians in their delivery. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? This work begins to build the foundation for more rigorous, empirical examination of project-based interventions. By mapping project-based interventions to the RTSS, core aims, targets and ingredients are established that can be objectively examined. This investigation also provides a road map for clinicians who wish to implement this complex intervention.

Examining behaviour change techniques (BCTs) in technology-based interventions for enhancing social participation in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia: a scoping review protocol

INTRODUCTION

Technology-based interventions have improved the social participation of older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Nevertheless, how these interventions modify social participation remains to be seen, and what efficient behaviour change techniques (BCTs) have been used. As such, this study aims to conduct a scoping review, identifying the features and BCTs behind technology-based interventions that improve social participation for individuals with MCI or dementia.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

The scoping review method will be used to search journal articles from electronic databases, such as PsycINFO, PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus and reference lists. Following the population, concept and context structure, this study focuses on adults over 60 diagnosed with MCI or dementia. It delves into technology-based interventions, specifically focusing on BCTs, features and overall effectiveness for improving social participation. The research considers contextual factors, exploring the diverse settings where these interventions are used, including homes, healthcare facilities and community centres. This approach aims to provide nuanced insights into the impact of technology-based interventions on social participation in the targeted demographic. Two authors will independently screen titles, abstracts and full texts using Covidence software. Disagreements will be resolved through consensus or a third reviewer, and reasons for exclusion will be documented. We will conduct a detailed analysis of BCTs to pinpoint effective strategies applicable to future technology-based intervention designs. Through this scoping review, we aim to provide valuable insights that guide the direction of future research. Specifically, we seek to inform the development of effective technology-based interventions tailored to support social participation for people with MCI or dementia.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Longitudinal mediation effects of activity meaning on the association between activity performance and quality of life among older adults with disabilities

BACKGROUND

Physical limitations may hinder older adults with physical disabilities' capability to perform various activities, which can affect their quality of life (QOL). Accomplishing meaningful activities may mitigate the impact of limited activity performance on their QOL. This longitudinal study aims to investigate how activity meaning mediates the relationship between activity performance and QOL among older adults with disabilities.

METHODS

Data for this longitudinal study was collected from 813 community-dwelling older adults aged 60 and above who had physical disabilities, over a two year interval. Path analysis was used to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal mediation effects from activity performance, through activity meaning, to QOL.

RESULTS

At the same wave, high IADL performance or social activity performance, and high QOL was indirectly associated through high IADL meaning or social meaning. As for longitudinal association, high T1 IADL performance was associated with better T2 QOL through high T1 and T2 IADL meaning. Similarly, high T1 social activity performance also contributed to T2 QOL through high T1 and T2 social activity meaning. Additionally, social activity performance exhibited higher influence on QOL than that of IADL.

CONCLUSIONS

Both IADL and social activities have distinct impacts on the QOL of older adults with disabilities. To improve the current and future QOL of older adults with disabilities, professionals must prioritize their involvement in the most meaningful activities while being sensitive to and supportive of their preferences and valued lifestyles.

The Content of Physiotherapy and Factors Impacting on Reablement - A National Study

Purpose

Reablement is a multidisciplinary intervention aimed at promoting function and independence for people with functional decline. Detailed descriptions of various professions' actions are needed for organization and evaluation of reablement services. This study describes physiotherapy practice in a reablement context in Swedish municipalities, focusing on the content and magnitude of interventions.

Methods

Physiotherapists (n=108) from 34 municipalities answered a web-based survey covering the target group, content and duration of their actions, and number of contacts initiated over a 3-week period. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression.

Results

Overall, 1005 cases were reported, with a mean age of 78.9 years (SD: 11.7); about 91% (n=912) were aged ≥65 and 61% (n=612) were women. About 70% were allocated to home care; 16% (n=160) of these had minor functional limitations (eg, needing safety alarms/help with domestic tasks), and 55% (n=550) had major functional limitations (eg, needing help with personal activities of daily living). The most reported actions were providing technical aids (60.8%, n=576), instructions/counseling (41.5%, n=393), walking/climbing stairs (27.6%, n=262), strength training (27.2%, n=258), and fall prevention (25.5%, n=242). Almost half of the cases included one action (n=494) and about 89% (n=890) targeted primary needs (body functions, walking indoors, self-care, or domestic life), mainly in clients with major functional limitations (odds ratio=2.96; 95% confidence interval: 1.95-4.49). About 50% (n=517) of the cases involved 1-2 contacts; about 55% (n=549) were completed within 3 weeks. Exercise was associated with ≥6 visits over ≥7 weeks. Supervision of home care staff was performed in 19.1% (n=181) of cases.

Conclusion

Reablement physiotherapy mostly comprises a few actions over a relatively short period. Whether this is a conscious strategy based on the purpose of home-based physiotherapy or clients' needs and wishes, or conversely an expression of limited resources, remains to be investigated.

Social participation during the COVID-19 pandemic in persons with a high risk for a severe course of COVID-19 - results of a longitudinal, multi-center observational study in Germany

Objective

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected how people go about their daily lives, often in various and substantial ways. This study aims to prospectively evaluate the changes in social participation during the COVID-19 pandemic in persons with a high risk for a severe COVID-19 course in Germany.

Methods

A paper-pencil-based survey was conducted starting at March 2021. Participants filled out questionnaires at four time points based on their COVID-19 vaccination status: before COVID-19 vaccination, one month, six months and twelve months after COVID-19 vaccination. Social participation measures included the Pandemic Social Participation Questionnaire (PSP-Q) and the Index for measuring participation restrictions (IMET). Repeated measures ANOVA and paired t-test were used to test for changes between time-points. Repeated measures correlation was used to assess the relationship between social participation and local COVID-19 incidences.

Results

Data from 245 participants was analyzed before and one month after COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, data from 156 participants was analyzed at time points one, six and twelve months after COVID-19. PSP-Q and IMET scores changed significantly after participants received a COVID-19 vaccination. Between one month and twelve months after vaccination, social participation improved significantly measured by PSP-Q. Social participation was negatively correlated with regional COVID-19 incidences before and after COVID-19 vaccination. Social participation was positively correlated with COVID-19 incidences between one month and twelve months after COVID-19 vaccination.

Conclusions

Social participation improved in persons with a high risk for a severe COVID-19 course during the pandemic. The local COVID-19 incidence showed a negative association with social participation only until the fall of 2021 when it was used as the sole metric to regulate COVID-19 protective measures. Although our data describes the trends in social participation, further studies are needed to identify the influencing factors for the observed increase in social participation.

Determinants of active aging and quality of life among older adults: systematic review

Introduction

Population demography across the globe shows an increasing trend in the aging population due to better healthcare, improved nutrition, advanced health-related technology, and decreased fertility rate. Despite these advancements, there remains a knowledge gap in understanding the association between active aging determinants and quality of life (QoL) among older adults, particularly within diverse cultural contexts, which has not been adequately explored in previous research. Therefore, understanding the association between active aging determinants and QoL can help policymakers plan early interventions or programs to assist future older adults in both aging actively and optimizing their quality of life (QoL), as these two factors have a bidirectional relationship.

Objective

This study aimed to review evidence regarding the association between active aging and quality of life (QoL) among older adults and to determine the most widely used study designs and measurement instruments in studies conducted between 2000 and 2020.

Methods

Relevant studies were identified by a systematic search of four electronic databases and cross-reference lists. Original studies examining the association between active aging and QoL in individuals aged 60 years or older were considered. The quality of the included studies and the direction and consistency of the association between active aging and QoL were assessed.

Results

A total of 26 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. Most studies reported a positive association between active aging and QoL among older adults. Active aging had a consistent association with various QoL domains including physical environment, health and social services, social environment, economic, personal, and behavioral determinants.

Conclusion

Active aging had a positive and consistent association with several QoL domains among older adults, backing the notion that the better the active aging determinants, the better the QoL among older adults. Considering the broader literature, it is necessary to facilitate and encourage the active participation of older adults in physical, social, and economic activities for the maintenance and/or improvement of QoL. Identifying other possible determinants and enhancing the methods to improve those determinants may help improve the QoL among older adults.

Quality of life of higher education students with disabilities at Shaqra University

Saudi Arabia, through its Vision 2030, seeks to enhance the Quality of Life (QoL) of all individuals who live there. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the of QoL of students with disabilities in a Saudi university (Shaqra University) as a case study. Although this study was conducted in one university, many students with disabilities around the world are facing the same systematic practices in many universities (Carballo et al., 2021; Khayatzadeh-Mahani et al., 2020). Therefore, this study used qualitative research by interviewing all students with disabilities who are registered at the university for the academic year 2022-2023. In addition to these 11 students with disabilities, 2 senior university administrators who have a direct relationship with the services provided to these students were also interviewed. The overall outcomes confirm that the QoL for these students is very low due to multiple factors that were discussed in detail.

Social belonging: brain structure and function is linked to membership in sports teams, religious groups, and social clubs

Human behavior across the life span is driven by the psychological need to belong, right from kindergarten to bingo nights. Being part of social groups constitutes a backbone for communal life and confers many benefits for the physical and mental health. Capitalizing on the neuroimaging and behavioral data from ∼40,000 participants from the UK Biobank population cohort, we used structural and functional analyses to explore how social participation is reflected in the human brain. Across 3 different types of social groups, structural analyses point toward the variance in ventromedial prefrontal cortex, fusiform gyrus, and anterior cingulate cortex as structural substrates tightly linked to social participation. Functional connectivity analyses not only emphasized the importance of default mode and limbic network but also showed differences for sports teams and religious groups as compared to social clubs. Taken together, our findings establish the structural and functional integrity of the default mode network as a neural signature of social belonging.

Factors associated with social participation and community ambulation in people with osteoarthritis: Findings from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging

AIM

Walking in the community allows participation in meaningful activities which positively influences self-rated health and quality of life. Our objective was to identify factors associated with social participation and community ambulation in a representative sample of Canadian adults with osteoarthritis (OA).

METHODS

Data were from >3800 participants in the Baseline Tracking Dataset of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging with OA of the hip and/or knee. Outcomes included frequency of participation in 8 community-based activities (past year, social participation), and frequency walking outside the home (past 7 days, community ambulation). Explanatory variables (15 for social participation, 11 for community ambulation) established in previous literature were evaluated. Variables significant in univariate binary logistic regression models were entered into multivariable models.

RESULTS

Frequency of social participation was greater for females, and individuals with higher levels of education. Those who were younger, dissatisfied with life, and had difficulty walking 2-3 blocks were less likely to participate. Having fewer chronic conditions, being younger, being single/widowed and being interviewed in spring/summer were associated with more frequent ambulation. Lower self-rated health, difficulty walking 2-3 blocks, pain and being female were associated with less frequent walking outside the home.

CONCLUSION

Many factors influence frequency of social participation and community ambulation. The ability to walk short distances is positively associated with both outcomes. This important factor can and should be addressed clinically to improve health and quality of life in people with OA.

Evaluating Optimism, Hope, Resilience, Coping Flexibility, Secure Attachment, and PERMA as a Well-Being Model for College Life Adjustment of Student Veterans: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis

The purpose of this study is to examine (a) to what extent demographic covariates, foundational and emerging positive psychology traits (FEPPTs), and PERMA uniquely predict college life adjustment, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and life satisfaction of student military veterans; (b) PERMA as a happiness and well-being model for college life adjustment, HRQOL, and life satisfaction among student veterans; and (c) FEPPTs as predictors of PERMA. In addition, we tested whether total PERMA scores mediate the relationship between service-connected disability and college adjustment. A total of 205 student veterans responded to an online survey. Results revealed that demographic covariates (e.g., service-connected disability), FEPPTs (e.g., optimism), and PERMA (e.g., positive emotion) significantly accounted for college life adjustment, HRQOL, and life satisfaction of student veterans. In addition, a mediation analysis revealed that PERMA partially mediated the relationship between service-connected disability and college life adjustment of student veterans. The results of this study provide empirical supports for the use of PERMA as a comprehensive well-being model of college life adjustment for student veterans.

Many Paths to Recovery: Comparing Basic Function and Participation in High-Functioning Older Adults After Acute Hospitalization

Function after acute hospitalization is mostly operationalized by Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL), a limited concept that overshadows a wide range of instrumental, social, and recreational activities, otherwise referred to as participation. Participation is important for patients' health and quality of life after hospitalization. This study focuses on high-functioning older adults, examining functional recovery after hospitalization by comparing BADL assessment with assessment of participation at one and three months following discharge relative to pre-hospitalization. Quantitative data were collected from 72 participants divided into two age groups of hospitalized older adults (age 65-74, n = 38; age ≥75, n = 34), followed by home visits after 1 month and telephone interviews 3 months after discharge. Both groups experienced a significantly greater decline in participation, compared with BADL, which were mostly preserved. A comprehensive assessment of participation better captures functional changes in high-functioning older adults. Early identification of participation withdrawal is crucial for preventing disability.

Examining subjective well-being among older adults using pain medications

PURPOSE

To examine the relationship between social participation and subjective well-being (SWB) among older adults using pain medications and evaluate the impact of sex on this relationship.

METHODS

A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using the 2019 National Health and Aging Trends Study data, a nationally-representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and older. Individuals were included if they reported taking pain medications for five days or more per week over the last month. Social participation was operationalized using the sum score of four items: visiting family and friends, going out for enjoyment, attending religious services, and participation in other organized activities. SWB was operationalized as a latent variable using four items reflecting positive and negative emotions, and three items reflecting self-evaluation. Structural equation modeling was used to test the relationship between key study constructs, as well as the moderating effect of sex on the relationship between social participation and SWB.

RESULTS

A total of 964 (weighted N = 7,660,599) participants were included in the study. Most participants were female (61.3%), White (81.0%), community-dwelling (94.9%) older adults. Confirmatory factor analysis showed appropriate fit for SWB. Social participation had a statistically significant association with SWB (unstandardized regression coefficient = 0.133; 95% CI 0.071, 0.196; p < 0.001) after adjusting for covariates. However, this relationship was not moderated by sex (p = 0.836).

CONCLUSION

Social participation is positively and significantly associated with SWB among older adults using pain medications. Interventions aimed at improving SWB should consider incorporating a social activities component.

Scoping study of definitions of social participation: update and co-construction of an interdisciplinary consensual definition

Background

considering the importance of social participation for quality of life and active ageing in older adults, it is an important target of social and health professionals’ interventions. A previous review of definitions of social participation in older adults included articles up to 2009; new publications and changes in the social context (e.g. social media and the COVID-19 pandemic) justify continuing this work.

Objective

this paper provides an updated inventory and synthesis of definitions of social participation in older adults. Based on a critical review by content experts and knowledge users, a consensual definition is proposed.

Methods

using a scoping study framework, four databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, AgeLine, PsycInfo) were searched with relevant keywords. Fifty-four new definitions were identified. Using content analysis, definitions were deconstructed as a function of who, how, what, where, with whom, when, and why dimensions.

Results

social participation definitions mostly focused on people’s involvement in activities providing interactions with others in society or the community. According to this new synthesis and input from content experts and knowledge users, social participation can be defined as a person’s involvement in activities providing interactions with others in community life and in important shared spaces, evolving according to available time and resources, and based on the societal context and what individuals want and is meaningful to them.

Conclusion

a single definition may facilitate the study of active ageing and the contribution of older adults to society, socioeconomic and personal development, benefits for older adults and society, self-actualisation and goal attainment.

Associations between Disability in Activities of Daily Living and Social Capital aspects among older adults: a scoping review

Social capital aspects are playing an important role in activities of daily living (ADL) performance, thus on independent living. This paper was aimed to present an overview of the associations and adverse effects between social capital aspects and disability in ADL and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in an older population aged 65 years old and over. Α scoping review was designed following the guidelines of PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and the review was conducted by 3 authors. A total of 185 primary studies were extracted and, finally, 40 studies did meet the inclusion criteria and critically appraised in two main categories; Category 1(29 studies) ‘social capital and disability in ADL’ deducing that as greater a social capital as better ADL performance and Category 2 (11 studies) ‘Social capital and HRQoL’ concluding that people 65 years old and over with lower social capital were presented with a poor HRQoL. Study synthesis highlights the impact of social capital suggesting that nurses caring for older people must focus on their engagement in terms of social diversity and trust in the community.

Older adults' experiences of maintaining social participation: Creating opportunities and striving to adapt to changing situations

BACKGROUND

Social participation concerns the possibility of engaging in activities in interaction with others or society at large and contributes to the health and well-being of older adults. In contrast, a lack of social participation is associated with loneliness. It is, therefore, important to understand what strategies older adults use to maintain social participation.

AIM

To explore and describe older adults' experiences of maintaining social participation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Nine older adults, aged 69-92 years, participated in interviews that were analysed through qualitative content analysis.

RESULTS

The overall findings reflect how older adults create opportunities for social participation by developing strategies and striving to adapt to changing situations, emphasizing how maintaining social participation is an active process. Preserving social participation requires motivation and an effort to take initiative to cultivate social relations, maintain community bonds, engage in social events and activities and stay connected with society.

CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE

These results may extend our understanding of strategies that older adults use, as well as the challenges they face when striving to adapt to new circumstances. This study may have implications for the practice of how to support older adults' social participation.

Barriers and Facilitators to Social Participation in Older Adults: A Systematic Literature Review

Objectives: Social participation has been shown to improve health, well-being, and quality of life in older adults. Previous reviews on social participation have been limited to identifying logistical barriers. The current review sought to examine barriers of social participation more broadly, as well as potential facilitators.Methods: We conducted a systematic review to collate identified barriers and facilitators to social participation in older adults. Seventy-six studies were eligible for inclusion.Results: Four main themes of barriers and facilitators to social participation associated with aging emerged: Demographic factors (such as age and socioeconomic status), Individual/Internal factors (such as motivations and health), Environmental/Infrastructure (such as accessibility, transport, and neighborhood cohesion), and Social Networks (particularly preexisting network size).Conclusions: These findings extended previous reviews to show that personal motivations, preexisting social networks, and neighborhood cohesion play vital roles in improving and maintaining quality social participation. The ability to facilitate this can occur at the individual therapeutic level and at the community level.Clinical implications: The findings highlight the need to consider barriers beyond logistical issues. In particular, healthy aging initiatives may benefit from matching social activities with individual motivations, and preventive measures to establish social networks early in the aging process are important.

Experiences With Social Participation in Group Physical Activity Programs for Older Adults

Little is known about how social participation can be facilitated among older adults in group physical activity and its psychosocial benefits that contribute to successful aging. This study aimed to understand older adults' experiences with social participation in group physical activity programs. Using interpretive description methodology, 16 observations, eight focus groups, and two interviews with participants unable to attend focus groups were conducted with adults 55 years and older attending programs across four recreation facilities. Group programs were found to influence social participation through (a) a meaningful context for connecting and (b) instructors' expectations of social interaction. Social participation in these programs addressed psychosocial needs by (c) increasing social contact and interaction, (d) fostering social relationships and belonging, and (e) promoting regular engagement. Training for instructors should include balancing the physical aspects of program delivery with the social, while also considering older adults' diverse needs and preferences for social interaction.

Predictors of participation restriction over a 9-year period in adults with myotonic dystrophy type 1

PURPOSE

For slowly progressive neuromuscular disease, prognostic approach and long-term monitoring of participation is a crucial part of rehabilitation services. To improve the prognostic approach, professionals must identify individuals at risk of having higher participation restriction. This study aimed to identify personal and environmental predictors of participation restriction over nine years in adults with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1).

METHODS

A secondary analysis of a longitudinal design comparing baseline with a follow-up nine years later was used with a multidimensional assessment of participation and personal and environmental factors. Based on theoretical models, multiple linear regressions were used.

RESULTS

One hundred and fourteen adults with DM1 were included in the study (63.2% women; 78.9% adult onset; mean (SD) age of 43.5 (10.4) years). When age, sex, phenotype, and education were controlled for, participation restriction was predicted by a longer time to stand and walk, lower grip strength, higher body mass index, absence of perceived impact of myotonia in daily living, use of adapted transportation from community services, and perception of obstacle in physical environment (p < 0.001, adjusted R² = 0.50).

CONCLUSIONS

The majority of predictors of participation restriction can be advantageously modified by rehabilitation and environmental changes, such as politics targeting community services provision or physical environment and services accessibility.Implications for rehabilitationPredictors could better inform rehabilitation professional to recognize individuals at risk of higher participation restriction over time and to target specific interventions based on a prognostic approach.Rehabilitation professionals could inform the people living with myotonic dystrophy type 1 and their relatives of the multifactorial nature of occurrence of participation restriction to diminish the "fatality" associated with a genetic progressive disorder.Predictors allow professionals to assess and intervene in the management of specific factors depending on the rehabilitation goal.Identifying individual with myotonic dystrophy with higher risk of participation restriction could help implement a long-term community based rehabilitation intervention plan targeting both personal and environmental factors.

What Role Does Activity Engagement Play in the Association between Cognitive Frailty and Falls among Older Adults? Evidence from Rural Shandong, China

INTRODUCTION

Previous studies have demonstrated the relationship between cognitive frailty and falls among older adults. Activity engagement (AE) is known to be related to falls in older adults but the subject has been limited to empirical study. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of AE between cognitive frailty and falls among older adults in rural Shandong, China.

METHODS

A total of 3,242 rural seniors (age ≥60 years; 63.6% women) were included in this cross-sectional study. Regression and bootstrap analyses were performed to explore the mediating role of AE between cognitive frailty and falls.

RESULTS

The prevalence of falls was 13.1% and the prevalence of cognitive frailty was 6.6% among the participants. AE mediated the association between cognitive frailty and falls (95% CI 0.077-0.223). However, the direct effect was no longer significant after being adjusted for AE (95% CI -0.037 to 0.684; p = 0.078).

CONCLUSION

Cognitive frailty was found to be associated with falls among rural older adults, and AE mediated this association. More attention should be paid to promote AE among Chinese rural older adults with cognitive frailty.

What Motivates Engagement in Work and Other Valued Social Roles Despite Persistent Back Pain?

Purpose The prognosis of persistent back pain is variable, with some individuals adjusting poorly and others continuing to actively engage in work and other valued social roles. The aim of this study was to better understand why some individuals, despite persistent back pain, continue to actively engage in work and other valued social roles. Methods Individuals with persistent back pain, who were participating in their regular duties as a full-time employee, homemaker, student or any combination of these, were recruited from a multidisciplinary pain centre and orthopedic physical therapy clinics in Alberta, Canada. A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews of 15 participants and a thematic analysis to analyze the data. Results There were two motivators identified for participating in the work role: (1) participation formed part of the participant's self-schema (a cognitive framework that includes one's beliefs about oneself) and (2) participation made it possible to achieve a valued outcome. Conclusions Further understanding of important motivators for maintaining engagement in work and other valued social roles despite persistent back pain can help inform the development of more successful disability and pain management programs.

Examination of Community Participation of Adults With Disabilities: Comparing Age and Disability Onset

Objective: Explore community participation between adults with disabilities ⩽50 and >50 years and between early-(⩽40) and late-(>40) onset disability. Method: A survey examining participation was conducted with a national convenience sample of 692 community-dwelling adults with disabilities. Results: Participants ⩽50 reported presence of more (p < .05) environmental supports for work/volunteer/education and use of transportation. Participants >50 had higher (p < .01) visits to pharmacies; higher (p < .05) evaluative quality of participation (EQOP) at gas stations, exercise facilities, beauty salons/barbers, and use of transportation (p < .01); and more difficulty participating without assistance at grocery stores (p < .05) and gas stations (p < .01). The early-onset group reported higher (p < .05) EQOP at work/volunteer/education and homes of family/friends. The late-onset group reported higher (p < .01) EQOP at exercise facilities; more (p < .05) environmental supports at pharmacies, restaurants, grocery stores (p < .01), doctors' offices (p ⩽ .01), and beauty salons/barbers (p < .01); greater (p < .01) influence of pain/fatigue; and more difficulty without assistance at grocery stores (p < .05) and gas stations (p < .01). Discussion: Understanding these differences can improve interventions to support community participation of individuals aging with disabilities.

Participation in Social Roles of Adolescents With Cerebral Palsy: Exploring Accomplishment and Satisfaction

Objective

To explore participation in social roles of adolescents (aged 12-18y) with cerebral palsy (CP), in terms of satisfaction compared with accomplishment.

Design

Cohort study as part of a prospective longitudinal research program.

Setting

Clinic.

Participants

Participants were adolescents (N=45; 58% male, mean age 15y 6mo) with CP at levels I-II (88%) and III-IV-V (12%) of the Gross Motor Function Classification System.

Interventions

Not applicable.

Main Outcome Measures

Accomplishment (0-9 scale; with score <8 “having difficulties”) and satisfaction (1-5 scale; with score 3 “neutral”) were assessed using the Life-Habits questionnaire, on 6 domains (Responsibilities, Interpersonal relationships, Community life, Education, Employment, Recreation). Per domain, we analyzed scatterplots of accomplishment vs satisfaction. Additionally, we compared determinant-models (including factors of CP, activity, person, and environment) using regression analysis.

Results

For accomplishment, mean scores were <8.00 except for Interpersonal relationships. For satisfaction, mean scores varied between 3.85 and 4.34. Overall, individuals with similar levels of accomplishment showed large ranges in their levels of satisfaction, which was expressed by low explained variances, especially on Education (6%). Furthermore, different sets of determinants were found for accomplishment (predominantly CP factors) compared with satisfaction (predominantly environment factors).

Conclusions

This study revealed a dissociation between participation accomplishment and satisfaction with participation among adolescents with CP. For practice and research, we recommend not only to focus on accomplishment but also, if not mainly, on satisfaction.

The Association Between Social Engagement, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Falls Among Older Primary Care Patients

OBJECTIVES

To examine associations between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and falls among primary care patients, and to investigate whether social engagement (SE) modifies these associations.

DESIGN

Cross sectional analysis using baseline data from an observational cohort study.

SETTING

Primary care.

PARTICIPANTS

Community-dwelling older adults (N=430) at risk of mobility decline with a mean age of 76.6 years (range 65-96y).

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The number of falls in the past year was reported at the baseline interview. MCI was identified using a cutoff of 1.5 SD below the age-adjusted mean on at least 2 of the standardized cognitive performance tests. SE (eg, keeping in touch with friends and family, volunteering, participating social activities…) was assessed with the Late Life Function and Disability Instrument, and required a score above the median value 49.5 out of 100.

RESULTS

MCI was present among 42% of participants and 42% reported at least 1 fall in the preceding year. Using generalized estimating equations, MCI was associated with a 77% greater rate of falls (P<.05). There was a statistically significant interaction between SE and MCI on the rate of falls (P<.01), such that at a high level of SE, MCI was not statistically associated with falls (P=.83). In participants with lower levels of SE, MCI is associated with 1.3 times greater rate of falls (P<.01).

CONCLUSIONS

While MCI is associated with a greater risk for falls, higher levels of SE may play a protective role.

Methods to evaluate perspectives of safety, independence, activity, and participation in older persons using welfare technology. A systematic review

Purpose: To conduct a systematic review of existing methods to evaluate the individual aspects of welfare technology from the perspectives of independence, safety, activity, and participation. Furthermore, the study aimed to describe outcomes that have been the focus of previous research to evaluate individual aspects of welfare technology in older persons living in ordinary housing. Materials and methods: A systematic literature review in PubMed, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies selected were those that explored the use of assistive and welfare technology devices from older persons' perspectives, and which considered the concepts of independence, safety, activity and participation, and quality of life. Results: A broad spectrum of instruments was applied in the studies. For independence, three questionnaires were used in the identified studies. For safety, one instrument was used in two versions. To study activity and participation as well as quality of life, several scales were used. Additionally, several studies included qualitative approaches for evaluation, such as interviews, or posed one or more questions regarding the effects of welfare technology. Conclusions: The integration of digital assistive and welfare technology should be based on the needs of older persons, and those needs must be assessed using reliable and relevant instruments. The heterogeneity of the target group, i.e., older persons, together with the fact that assessments must give consideration to identifying goals, obstacles, and risks as well as users' preferences, implies a person-centred approach.Implications for rehabilitationThe integration of digital assistive and welfare technology should be based on older persons' needs, and those needs must be assessed using reliable and relevant instruments.The heterogeneity of the target group, i.e. older persons, together with the fact that assessments must give consideration to identifying goals, obstacles and risks as well as users' preferences, implies a person-centred approach.The ideal would be one coherent model that explores the use of digital assistive and welfare technology from the individual, economic as well as organisational dimensions. Are the Domains Considered by ICF Comprehensive Enough to Conceptualize Participation in the Patient with Hand Injuries?

Background  Although participation is a core concept in multiple models of disability, there is no consensus on its definition. Objective  The aim of this study was to extract participation domains based on review of theories, available outcome measures, and interviews with experts and the person with hand injuries to compare with the ICF domains of participation. Methods  A qualitative approach using a deductive content analysis was employed to extend definitions of participation from theories. Later on, inductive qualitative method using semistructured interview with five experts in different fields and 30 patients with different hand injuries was used. Coding was performed with extracted domains from the content of data, and finally, the extracted domains were compared with the ICF domains of participation. Results  Some of the extracted domains were not considered in ICF. Conclusion  Subjective participation is the main forbearance part. Role, leisure, domestic life, environment, and others are also main missing meanings. This limitation can hinder measuring disability and health.

Does economic vulnerability moderate the association between transportation mode and social activity restrictions in later life?

Transportation is critical to older adults’ ability to participate in social activities in their community. We examined the association between modes of transportation and restrictions in social activity (i.e.visiting with others, religious attendance, clubs and organised activities, and going out for enjoyment), with particular attention to the moderating effects of economic vulnerability. We used logistic regression to analyse data from 7,197 community-dwelling older adults from the 2011 wave of the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a representative sample of adults aged 65 and over in the United States of America. Economic vulnerability moderated the association between transportation mode and social activity restrictions. Findings suggest that even when economically vulnerable older adults have access to driving, walking or public transit, they may be at a higher risk for social exclusion than their counterparts with more financial resources.

Assessing College Life Adjustment of Students With Disabilities: Application of the PERMA Framework

The clearest career path to the middle class generally involves access, and completion, of postsecondary education. However, persons with disabilities are less likely to enroll or graduate from college compared with their same-age peers without disabilities. The quality of life of students with disabilities, and their well-being, may be a root cause of low graduation rates. To flourish in life is to both feel good and function effectively. Seligman developed the Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment (PERMA) model that may be useful in understanding the well-being of individuals. The purpose of this study is to examine the factorial structure of the PERMA model in sample college students with disabilities and then examine the model’s relationship with outcomes important to college adjustment such as academic achievement, relationship problems, stress, life satisfaction, and core self-evaluation. Ninety-seven college students with disabilities enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) were recruited for the study. Findings support a one-factor solution for the PERMA measurement model. Furthermore, PERMA was negatively correlated with factors associated with college difficulty and positively associated with factors linked to college success. The PERMA model also demonstrated that well-being mediates the relationship between functional disability and life satisfaction. Implications for rehabilitation researchers and practitioners are reviewed.

Is frailty associated with life-space mobility and perceived autonomy in participation outdoors? A longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

essential aspects of independence in community mobility among older people concern the control over where, when and how to participate (perceived autonomy), and actual mobility (life-space mobility; frequency, distance and need of assistance). We studied relationships between frailty and life-space mobility and perceived autonomy in participation outdoors among community-dwelling 75-90 years old people.

METHODS

longitudinal analyses of the 'Life-space mobility in old age' cohort study (n = 753). Life-space mobility (Life-Space Assessment, range 0-120) and perceived autonomy in participation outdoors (Impact on Participation and Autonomy subscale 'autonomy outdoors', range 0-20) were assessed at baseline and 2 years later. Baseline frailty indicators were unintentional weight loss (self-report), weakness (5 times chair rise), exhaustion (self-report), slowness (2.44 m walk) and low physical activity (self-report).

RESULTS

in total, 53% had no frailty, 43% pre-frailty (1-2 frailty indicators) and 4% frailty (≥3 indicators). Generalised estimation equation models showed that life-space mobility was lower among those with frailty and pre-frailty compared with those without frailty and, in addition, declined at a faster pace. Perceived autonomy in participation outdoors was more restricted among those with frailty and pre-frailty compared with those without frailty, but the rate of decline did not differ.

CONCLUSION

frailty was associated with more restricted life-space mobility and poorer perceived autonomy in the decision-making concerning community mobility. Over the follow-up, frailty predicted a steeper decline in life-space mobility but not in perceived autonomy. Further study is warranted to determine whether compensation strategies or changes in the valuation of activities underlie this discrepancy.

Trajectories of quality of life in patients with traumatic limb injury: a 2-year follow-up study

PURPOSE

Traumatic limb injury (TLI) can have a negative impact on a patient's quality of life (QOL), and the patient's QOL may fluctuate over time. However, the longitudinal change patterns of QOL in patients with TLI are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the QOL trajectories in patients with TLI in 4 QOL domains: physical capacity, psychological well-being, social relationships, and environment.

METHODS

The patients' QOL was assessed within 14 days and at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after injury. In each QOL domain, 4 latent growth curve models (LGMs, including non-growth, linear growth, quadratic growth, and cubic LGM) were adopted to examine the QOL trajectories across the 6 time points.

RESULTS

A total of 499 patients completed the 6 assessments. For all 4 QOL domains, the cubic LGM had the best model fitting (root-mean-square error of approximation < 0.01) revealing that the patients' 4 QOL domains changed with cubic trajectories: QOL improved in the first 6 months, deteriorated in the second 6 months, and improved smoothly at 12-24 months after injury.

CONCLUSIONS

This study found that the trajectories in the 4 QOL domains were cubic trajectories in patients with TLI. These findings indicate that clinicians should pay additional attention to improve the patients' QOL in the first 6 months after injury and to prevent or reduce QOL deterioration at 6-12 months.

The construct validity of the Dutch version of the activity card sort

PURPOSE

Establishing construct validity of the ACS-NL in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD).

METHOD

Discriminative validity was established in 191 community-dwelling individuals with PD using an extreme groups design (Hoehn and Yahr stages 1 and 3). Convergent validity was determined by relating the performance scores of the ACS-NL to the scores of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) scores, and relating ACS-NL satisfaction scores to the COPM scores and to the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation Participation (USER-P).

RESULTS

The ACS-NL discriminated between individuals with PD with H&Y stages 1 and 3 (U = 524.5, Z = -5.453). ACS-NL performance scores correlated weakly with COPM scores (r = (0).19) and moderately with PDQ-39 scores (r = 0.44-0.55). The ACS-NL satisfaction scores correlated weakly with COPM scores (r = 0.23), and moderately with USER-P scores (r ≥ 0.40).

CONCLUSIONS

This study contributed to the validation of the ACS-NL. The assessment enhances the possibility of monitoring participation in activities in individuals with PD. Implications for Rehabilitation The ACS-NL appears to hold good potential for use in the assessment of participation in activities in individuals with PD. The ACS-NL has added value parallel to administration of other instruments measuring participation (COPM) and quality of life (PDQ-39). This study demonstrates the capacity of the ACS to measure a unique construct of participation and helps to improve the psychometric properties and administration of the ACS-NL in practice.

Test-Retest Reliability and Validity of the Malay Version Life Habits Assessment (LIFE-H 3.1) to Measure Social Participation in Adults With Physical Disabilities

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Social participation restriction is a common barrier encountered by older adults and individuals with physical disabilities. To best direct the limited resource to support social services for individuals with disability, there is a need to objectively measure social participation restriction. A number of tools to measure levels of social participation are available, but none of them has been translated into the Malay language. This cross-sectional study examined the test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of the Life Habits Assessment (LIFE-H 3.1) that had been translated and culturally adapted to the Malay language.

METHODS

Seventy-five individuals with physical disabilities (age, mean [standard deviation] = 58 [10] years; 49 males) participated in this study. Participants were interviewed twice with the Malay version LIFE-H 3.1, approximately 1 week apart. The Barthel Index (BI) and the World Health Organization Assessment of Quality of Life-Brief version (WHOQoL-BREF) were administered in the first interview as well. Intraclass correlation coefficients and the Bland-Altman Bias D were used to examine test-retest reliability. The Spearman correlation coefficients were computed to quantify the correlation between the Malay version LIFE-H 3.1 and the BI and the WHOQoL-BREF, respectively, to examine the concurrent validity of the Malay version LIFE-H 3.1. Furthermore, standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change were calculated.

RESULTS

The Malay version LIFE-H 3.1 had excellent test-retest reliability as evidenced by good to excellent intraclass correlation coefficients (0.71-0.95) and minimal Bland-Altman biases (0.01-0.12). The correlations between the Malay version LIFE-H 3.1 and the BI were fair to good (r = 0.28-0.69). The correlations between the Malay version LIFE-H 3.1 and the WHOQoL-BREF were weak to fair, ranging from 0.02 to 0.57.

CONCLUSIONS

The Malay version LIFE-H 3.1 demonstrates excellent test-retest reliability and satisfactory validity. This questionnaire is an appropriate tool to assess social participation in rehabilitation for native Malay language speakers.

Optimizing social participation in community-dwelling older adults through the use of behavioral coping strategies

PURPOSE

This study aimed to (1) determine the categories of behavioral coping strategies most strongly correlated with optimal seniors' social participation in different activity and role domains and (2) identify the demographic, health and environmental factors associated with the use of these coping strategies optimizing social participation.

METHOD

The sample consisted of 350 randomly recruited community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years). Coping strategies and social participation were measured, respectively, using the Inventory of Coping Strategies Used by the Elderly and Assessment of Life Habits questionnaires. Information about demographic, health and environmental factors was also collected during the interview.

RESULTS

Regression analyses showed a strong relationship between the use of cooking- and transportation-related coping strategies and optimal participation in the domains of nutrition and community life, respectively. Older age and living alone were associated with increased use of cooking-related strategies, while good self-rated health and not living in a seniors' residence were correlated with greater use of transportation-related strategies.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study helped to identify useful behavioral coping strategies that should be incorporated in disability prevention programs designed to promote community-dwelling seniors' social participation. However, the appropriateness of these strategies depends on whether they are used in relevant contexts and tailored to specific needs.

IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION

Our results support the relevance of including behavioral coping strategies related to cooking and transportation in disability prevention programs designed to promote community-dwelling seniors' social participation in the domains of nutrition and community life, respectively. Older age and living alone were associated with increased use of cooking-related strategies, while good self-rated health and not living in a seniors' residence were correlated with greater use of transportation-related strategies. These factors should be considered in order to optimize implementation of these useful strategies in disability prevention programs. The appropriateness of these selected strategies depends on whether they are used in relevant contexts and tailored to specific needs.

Environmental Factors Associated With Social Participation of Older Adults Living in Metropolitan, Urban, and Rural Areas: The NuAge Study

OBJECTIVES

We compared the social participation of older adults living in metropolitan, urban, and rural areas, and identified associated environmental factors.

METHODS

From 2004 to 2006, we conducted a cross-sectional study using an age-, gender-, and area-stratified random sample of 1198 adults (aged 67-82 years). We collected data via interviewer-administered questionnaires and derived from Canadian censuses.

RESULTS

Social participation did not differ across living areas (P = .09), but after controlling for potential confounding variables, we identified associated area-specific environmental variables. In metropolitan areas, higher social participation was associated with greater proximity to neighborhood resources, having a driver's license, transit use, and better quality social network (R(2) = 0.18). In urban areas, higher social participation was associated with greater proximity to neighborhood resources and having a driver's license (R(2) = 0.11). Finally, in rural areas, higher social participation was associated with greater accessibility to key resources, having a driver's license, children living in the neighborhood, and more years lived in the current dwelling (R(2) = 0.18).

CONCLUSIONS

To enhance social participation of older adults, public health interventions need to address different environmental factors according to living areas.

Fatores associados à satisfação com a vida em idosos cuidadores e não cuidadores

O objetivo do artigo é investigar associações entre a satisfação com a vida e variáveis sociodemográficas, condições de saúde, funcionalidade, envolvimento social e suporte social em idosos cuidadores e não cuidadores, e entre satisfação e intensidade do estresse no grupo de cuidadores. A amostra foi composta por 338 cuidadores selecionados por dois itens do Elders Life Stress Inventory, versão brasileira. A partir de sorteio aleatório, foi composto um grupo-comparação de idosos não cuidadores, com a mesma distribuição por gênero, idade e renda dos cuidadores. Os dados foram derivados de medidas de autorrelato (questionários e escalas). Idosos cuidadores com menor satisfação e maior estresse apresentaram mais sintomas de insônia, de fadiga, de doenças e pior desempenho AIVD. Aqueles com maior satisfação e menor estresse apresentaram bom nível de suporte social. Insônia, depressão e fadiga associaram-se com baixa satisfação entre os cuidadores; fadiga, depressão e menor suporte social entre os não cuidadores. Condições de saúde e psicossociais desfavoráveis e baixo nível de satisfação podem limitar a qualidade de vida e do cuidado oferecido por cuidadores familiares idosos, o que sugere a relevância de oferecer-lhes suporte instrumental, psicológico e informativo.

Social participation: redesign of education, research, and practice in occupational therapy*

There is growing attention to participation and social participation in literature and policy reports. Occupational therapists strongly believe that creating coherence between the person's occupations and environment will facilitate participation of each individual. Nowadays, societal developments such as "health literacy and self-management", "Web 2.0 social media", "empowering communities", and "Nothing About Us Without Us" increase opportunities for people to interact on different levels of social participation. Social participation can be used as an outcome, though it can also be seen as a means to change society and to develop solutions for barriers experienced by people with chronic diseases or disabilities. Societal developments will have an impact on social participation in terms of supporting each other and contributing to society. Additionally, these changes will have a major influence on the way we educate, conduct research, and deliver occupational therapy practice.

Satisfaction with participation in multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury

PURPOSE

To validate a single item self-report of satisfaction with participation in two groups with differing patterns of symptoms and disease progress, multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury (SCI).

METHOD

Community-dwelling adults with MS (N = 1,271) or SCI (N = 620) completed a battery of self-report questionnaires covering demographic information, disease specific measures, symptoms, psychological distress, social-environmental issues, and overall well-being. They were also asked to rate satisfaction with participation: How satisfied are you with your ability to take part in activities that are important to you: not satisfied, somewhat satisfied, satisfied, or very satisfied. Kendall's tau rank correlation coefficient and χ(2) tests were used to examine the strength and direction of associations between demographic and symptom variables and responses to the participation item.

RESULTS

Although the demographics of the MS and SCI differed in predictable ways, younger participants and those employed report more satisfaction with participation. Ratings of satisfaction with participation were also consistently associated with a number of variables including less fatigue, pain, depression, stress, anxiety, as well as higher overall measures of well-being across the two populations.

CONCLUSIONS

More research is needed to better understand the multiple dimensions that comprise participation and to develop robust and sensitive measurement tools. A global rating of satisfaction with participation using one item has a number of potentially useful applications including description of case mix in clinical trials.

A systematic review of instruments assessing participation: challenges in defining participation

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate: (1) whether instruments which intend to measure participation actually do and (2) how frequently specific aspects and domains of participation are addressed.

DATA SOURCES

A systematic search was performed in PubMed.

STUDY SELECTION

Included were patient-reported instruments that primarily aim to measure participation.

DATA EXTRACTION

The full-text instruments were extracted from the articles or obtained from the authors. Two reviewers independently rated each item of the included instruments as measuring participation (yes, no, or undetermined). For each item, the specific aspect and domain of participation were categorized.

DATA SYNTHESIS

Included were 103 instruments (2445 items). Of the included items, 619 items concerned participation and 217 concerned undetermined items. In total, 68 instruments contained at least 1 (sub)scale with 50% or more participation or undetermined items. The participation items referred to the participation aspects: participation problems (53%), participation accomplishment (31%), and satisfaction with participation (9%). The domains of the participation items concerned: work/study (27%), social life (27%), general participation (19%), and home (11%). The undetermined items mainly referred to domains about leisure (43%), transport (26%), and shopping (12%).

CONCLUSIONS

According to our working definition of participation, most instruments that aim to measure participation do so only to a limited extent. These instruments mainly assess aspects of participation problems and participation accomplishment. The domains of participation covered by these instruments primarily include work/study, social life, general participation, home, leisure, transport, and shopping.
