Abstract
The increasing occurrence of micropollutants in natural water bodies has medium to long-term effects on both aquatic life and human health. The aim of this study is to optimize the degradation of two pharmaceutical pollutants of emerging concern: amoxicillin and acetaminophen in aqueous solution at laboratory and pilot scale, by solar photo-Fenton process carried out at neutral pH using ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) as a complexing agent to maintain iron in solution. The initial concentration of each compound was set at 1 mg/L dissolved in a simulated effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP). A factorial experimental design and its surface response analysis were used to optimize the operating parameters to achieve the highest initial degradation rate of each target. The evolution of the degradation process was measured by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC/UV), obtaining elimination rates above 90% for both contaminants. Statistical study showed the optimum concentrations of Fe(III) at 3 mg/L at an Fe-EDDS ratio of 1:2 and 2.75 mg/L H2O2 for the almost complete removal of the target compounds by solar photo-Fenton process. Validation of the experimental design was successfully carried out with actual MWTP effluent spiked with 100 μg/L of amoxicillin and acetaminophen, each at pilot plant scale.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND PUBLIC HEALTH 2023; 20:1276. Abstract
The degradation of a model agro-industrial wastewater phenolic compound (caffeic acid, CA) by a UV-A-Fenton system was investigated in this work. Experiments were carried out in order to compare batch and continuous mode. Initially, batch experiments showed that UV-A-Fenton at pH 3.0 (pH of CA solution) achieved a higher generation of HO•, leading to high CA degradation (>99.5%). The influence of different operational conditions, such as H2O2 and Fe2+ concentrations, were evaluated. The results fit a pseudo first-order (PFO) kinetic model, and a high kinetic rate of CA removal was observed, with a [CA] = 5.5 × 10−4 mol/L, [H2O2] = 2.2 × 10−3 mol/L and [Fe2+] = 1.1 × 10−4 mol/L (kCA = 0.694 min−1), with an electric energy per order (EEO) of 7.23 kWh m−3 order−1. Under the same operational conditions, experiments in continuous mode were performed under different flow rates. The results showed that CA achieved a steady state with higher space-times (θ = 0.04) in comparison to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal (θ = 0−0.020). The results showed that by increasing the flow rate (F) from 1 to 4 mL min−1, the CA and DOC removal rate increased significantly (kCA = 0.468 min−1; kDOC = 0.00896 min−1). It is concluded that continuous modes are advantageous systems that can be adapted to wastewater treatment plants for the treatment of real agro-industrial wastewaters.

Abstract
The application of solar photo-Fenton as post-treatment of municipal secondary effluents (MSE) in developing tropical countries is the main topic of this review. Alternative technologies such as stabilization ponds and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) are vastly applied in these countries. However, data related to the application of solar photo-Fenton to improve the quality of effluents from UASB systems are scarce. This review gathered main achievements and limitations associated to the application of solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH and at pilot scale to analyze possible challenges associated to its application as post-treatment of MSE generated by alternative treatments. To this end, the literature review considered studies published in the last decade focusing on CECs removal, toxicity reduction and disinfection via solar photo-Fenton. Physicochemical characteristics of effluents originated after UASB systems alone and followed by a biological post-treatment show significant difference when compared with effluents from conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems. Results obtained for solar photo-Fenton as post-treatment of MSE in developed countries indicate that remaining organic matter and alkalinity present in UASB effluents may pose challenges to the performance of solar advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This drawback could result in a more toxic effluent. The use of chelating agents such as Fe3+-EDDS to perform solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH was compared to the application of intermittent additions of Fe2+ and both of these strategies were reported as effective to remove CECs from MSE. The latter strategy may be of greater interest in developing countries due to costs associated to complexing agents. In addition, more studies are needed to confirm the efficiency of solar photo-Fenton on the disinfection of effluent from UASB systems to verify reuse possibilities. Finally, future research urges to evaluate the efficiency of solar photo-Fenton at natural pH for the treatment of effluents from UASB systems.

Abstract
The mechanism of photolysis of the Fe(III) complex with ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid ([FeEDDS]-) was revealed using a combination of time resolved and stationary photochemical methods. Using laser flash photolysis (λex = 355 nm), the formation of the primary intermediate, the radical complex of Fe(II) with quantum yield (φ0 = 0.21) was detected for the first time. The lifetime (1.8 ms) and the spectral characteristics (λmax = 520 nm, ε520 nm = 160 M-1cm-1) of this intermediate were also determined. The dependence of the quantum yield of photolysis of the [FeEDDS]- complex (φFeEDDS) and the hydroxyl radical quantum yield (φOH) on the excitation wavelength, pH, and concentrations of the ligand and iron ions were obtained for the first time. It has been established that under optimal conditions at neutral pH, the value of φFeEDDS is about 0.8, and φOH is about 0.15. It was found that φFeEDDS does not depend on the initial concentrations of Fe(III), EDDS, but depends on pH, the excitation wavelength and the presence of oxygen. φOH does not depend on the initial concentrations of Fe(III), EDDS, but depends on pH and the excitation wavelength. The high φOH values make the [FeEDDS]- complex a suitable system for the generation of •OH radical at neutral pH under UV radiation.

Abstract
AbstractPhoto-Fenton processes activated by biodegradable Fe(III)–EDDS complexes have attracted huge attention from the scientific community, but the operative mechanism of the photo-activation of H2O2 in the presence of Fe(III)–EDDS has not been fully clarified yet. The application of the Fe(III)–EDDS complex in Fenton and photo-Fenton (mainly under UV-B light) processes, using 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) as a model pollutant was explored to give insights into the operative mechanism. Furthermore, the potential synergistic contribution of soybean peroxidase (SBP) was investigated, since it has been reported that upon irradiation of Fe(III)–EDDS the production of H2O2 can occur. SBP did not boost the 4-CP degradation, suggesting that the possibly produced H2O2 reacts immediately with the Fe(II) ion with a quick kinetics that does not allow the diffusion of H2O2 into the bulk of the solution (i.e., outside the solvent cage of the complex). So, a concerted mechanism in which the photochemically produced H2O2 and Fe(II) react inside the hydration sphere of the Fe(III)–EDDS complex is proposed.

Abstract
Background: This work studied the use of the organic fertilizers DTPA-Fe and EDDS-Fe as iron chelates for solar driven photo-Fenton process at natural pH. This process was proposed to investigate its performance on removing a mixture of agrochemicals (propiconazole, imidacloprid and diuron) from pineapple processing wastewater to obtain a suitable effluent to be reused in the agricultural sector. Methods: Experiments were carried out in a solar simulator with a stirred cylindric photoreactor, with a volume of 150 mL and controlled temperature (20°C). The first set of experiments was carried out with ultrapure water to determine optimal iron and H 2O 2 concentrations. The second was performed with simulated wastewater of pineapple processing. Results: The optimized operational conditions for both iron complexes were 10 mg L -1 of Fe (III) and 25 mg L -1 of H 2O 2, since more than 80% of micropollutants (MP) (at an initial concentration of 1 mg L -1 of each compound) were removed in only 20 min with both DTPA-Fe and EDDS-Fe. The effect of organic matter and inorganic salts on radicals scavenging and chelates stability was also investigated in the experiments performed with synthetic pineapple processing wastewater. The results disclosed differences depending on the iron complex. Nitrites were the principal component influencing the tests carried out with EDDS-Fe. While carbonates at low concentration only significantly affected the experiments performed with DTPA-Fe, they were the major influence on the MPs removal efficiency decrease. In contrast, the presence of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ only influence on this last one. Finally, the results of phytotoxicity disclosed the suitability of treated effluent to be reused in the agricultural sector. Conclusions: This work demonstrated that solar powered photo-Fenton catalysed by iron fertilizer EDDS is a suitable technology for depolluting water streams coming from pineapple processing plants at circumneutral pH, and its subsequent reuse for crop irrigation.

Abstract
Antineoplastic agents present potential hazards to human health and the environment. For this reason, these compounds have attracted a great deal of attention from researchers in the environmental sciences field. In order to help guide future research, it is important to understand the current state of investigation of the occurrence of these microcontaminants and methods for their removal, especially focusing on Fenton and photo-Fenton processes applied to various aqueous matrices in which this class of pharmaceuticals is present. For this purpose, a systematic review of these topics was performed by bibliometric analysis of articles published during the last decade and available in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. This study enables visualization of the current panorama and trends in this field, providing a guide for future collaborative research and exchange of knowledge. Various strategies have been suggested to improve the efficiency of Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, mainly by means of the application of multiples additions of iron, the use of heterogeneous catalysts, and/or the use of chelating agents. Some studies have evaluated different radiation sources employed for photo-Fenton processes, such as solar and/or artificial radiation. In turn, the identification of transformation products generated by Fenton and photo-Fenton treatments, together with their evaluation by in silico (Q)SAR predictions or experimental toxicological bioassays, are related subjects that have been less reported in published works and that should be studied in depth. These subjects can support treatment evaluations that are more realistic, considering their limitations or potentials.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species play a critical role in degrading chemical or biological contaminants in advanced oxidation processes. However, it is still not clear whether conventional Fenton and photo-Fenton processes generate different reactive oxygen species, respectively. This study revealed the roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for simultaneous removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and recalcitrant micropollutant using three processes, i.e., conventional Fenton, photo-Fenton, and ethylenediamine-N, N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) modified photo-Fenton. Both chemical scavengers and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the generation of various ROS and their contribution towards bacterial inactivation and micropollutant degradation. Results showed ARB and carbamazepine (CBZ) elimination efficiency in the order: EDDS modified photo-Fenton process > photo-Fenton process > Fenton process. The ARB detection limit (6-log ARB) was observed within 10 min at lower doses of 0.1 mM Fe3+, 0.2 mM EDDS, and 0.5 mM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). With the same dose, it took longer (60 min) to remove CBZ, while 2.5 times higher H2O2 dose (1.25 mM) removed around 99% of CBZ within 10 min treatment. The present study highlighted that the hydroxyl radical (HO•) plays a dominant role, while singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radical anion (O2•-) exhibit moderate effects to remove the hazards. Our findings provide mechanistic insights into the role of various reactive oxygen species on degrading micropollutants and inactivating ARB.

Abstract
The Fe(III)-S(IV) system used for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) at acidic pH has just been proposed and demonstrated valid for very few contaminants in the last several years. In this work, we investigated the effect of ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation on the degradation efficiency of the Fe(III)/S(IV) system at near-neutral pH. Paracetamol (PARA) was selected as a model contaminant. The influencing factors, such as initial pH and Fe(III)/S(IV) molar ratio on chemical kinetics, and the mechanism of PARA degradation are investigated, with an emphasis on the determination of dominant oxidant species. Our results show that irradiation enhances the PARA degradation by accelerating the decrease of pH to acidic levels, and the optimal pH for the degradation of PARA in the Fe(III)/S(IV)/O2 system was around 4.0. At near-neutral pH, more than 60% of PARA was decomposed within 40 min under irradiation, whereas no significant degradation of PARA was observed using Fe(III)/S(IV) at pH 7.0 without irradiation. Mechanism investigation revealed that sulfate radical (SO4•‒) is the main oxidant species generated and responsible for the PARA degradation under these conditions. This finding may have promising implications in developing a new degradation process for dealing with wastewater at near-neutral pH by the Fe(III)/S(IV)/O2 system under UVA irradiation.

Abstract
This study investigated a novel sodium iron chlorophyllin-H2O2 (SIC-H2O2) sludge pretreatment strategy before anaerobic digestion to enhance methane production. The efficiencies and mechanism of the proposed strategy to enhance sludge biodegradability were explored. The SIC-H2O2 pretreatment could enhance the oxidation performance for sludge floc disintegration to dissociate TB-EPS into S-EPS increased SCOD to 521.38 mg/L. The increase of solubilization and release of EPS with the pretreatment facilitate the biogas production at 702 L kg-1 VS, which was 3-folds of the control and significantly higher than other pretreatments. The result of excitation-emission matrix and parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis showed that the SIC-H2O2 pretreatment enhanced the dissociation of TB-EPS fractions, especially the protein-like and soluble microbial by-product-like substances. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results provided evidence for homolytic catalysis H2O2 for the generation OH and the production of high-valent (Por)FeIV(O) intermediates. Synergistic effects of reactive oxygen species (OH, H2O2 and /HO2) and (Por)FeIV(O) enhanced the EPS disintegration during SIC-H2O2 pretreatment. The mixed-acid type fermentation provided continuous VFAs supply under the enrichment of Chloroflexi and Actinobacteria and multiplication Methanosaeta also promoted methane production. This research provides a feasible pretreatment strategy increase sludge biodegradability and enhance biogas production in the anaerobic digestion process.

Role of sunlight and oxygen on the performance of photo-Fenton process at near neutral pH using organic fertilizers as iron chelates. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 803:149873. Abstract
Nowadays, reaction mechanisms of photo-Fenton process with chelated iron are not yet clearly defined. In this study, five organic fertilizers were used as iron complexes to investigate the role of sunlight and oxygen in photo-Fenton at near neutral pH. UV absorbance and stability constant of each selected iron chelate is different, and this work demonstrates that these parameters affect the reaction mechanisms in SMX degradation. Irradiation experiments without H2O2 revealed that only EDDS-Fe and DTPA-Fe achieved SMX degradation, but different iron release. These results, together with soluble oxygen free experiments, allowed the proposal of complementary reaction mechanisms to those of the classical photo-Fenton. The proposed mechanisms start through the potential photoexcitation of the iron complex, followed by subsequent oxygen-mediated hydroxyl radical generation reactions that are different for EDDS-Fe and DTPA-Fe. Moreover, irradiation experiments using EDTA-Fe and HEDTA-Fe had negligible SMX degradation despite iron release was observed, evidencing the differences between iron chelates.

Abstract
The presence of diverse pollutants in water has been threating human health and aquatic ecosystems on a global scale. For more than a century, chemical oxidation using strongly oxidizing species was one of the most effective technologies to destruct pollutants and to ensure a safe and clean water supply. However, the removal of increasing amount of pollutants with higher structural complexity, especially the emerging micropollutants with trace concentrations in the complicated water matrix, requires excessive dosage of oxidant and/or energy input, resulting in a low cost-effectiveness and possible secondary pollution. Consequently, it is of practical significance but scientifically challenging to achieve selective oxidation of pollutants of interest for water decontamination. Currently, there are a variety of examples concerning selective oxidation of pollutants in aqueous systems. However, a systematic understanding of the relationship between the origin of selectivity and its applicable water treatment scenarios, as well as the rational design of catalyst for selective catalytic oxidation, is still lacking. In this critical review, we summarize the state-of-the-art selective oxidation strategies in water decontamination and probe the origins of selectivity, that is, the selectivity resulting from the reactivity of either oxidants or target pollutants, the selectivity arising from the accessibility of pollutants to oxidants via adsorption and size exclusion, as well as the selectivity due to the interfacial electron transfer process and enzymatic oxidation. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are briefly outlined to stimulate future discussion and interest on selective oxidation for water decontamination, particularly toward application in real scenarios.

Abstract
Sulfate radical (•SO4-)-based advanced oxidation processes are widely used for wastewater treatment. This study explored the potential use of UV/persulfate (UV/PS) system for the degradation of 17β-estradiol (E2). The pH of the reaction system can affect the degradation rate of E2 by UV/PS and the optimum pH was 7.0; Br- and Cl- in water can promote the degradation rate, HCO3- has an inhibitory effect on the reaction, SO42- and cations (Na+, Mg2+, K+) have no effect on the degradation rate. The degradation of E2 by UV/PS was a mineralization process, with the mineralization rate reaching 90.97% at 8 h. E2 in the UV/PS system was mainly degraded by hydroxylation, deoxygenation, and hydrogenation. E2 reaction sites were mainly located on benzene rings, mainly carbonylation on quinary rings, and bond breakage between C10 and C5 resulted in the removal of benzene rings and carboxyl at C2 and C3 sites. In the presence of halogen ions, halogenated disinfection by-products were not formed in the degradation process of E2 by UV/PS. E2 in the UV/PS system could inhibit the formation of bromate. The results of this study suggest that UV/PS is a safe and reliable method to degrade E2.

Abstract
Despite the widespread presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in surface water and groundwater systems, little is known about the impact of environmental levels of H2O2 on the redox activity of minerals. Here we demonstrate that environmental concentrations of H2O2 can alter the reactivity of birnessite-type manganese oxide, an earth-abundant functional material, and decrease its oxidative activity in natural systems across a wide range of pH values (4-8). The H2O2-induced reductive dissolution generates Mn(II) that will re-bind to MnO2 surfaces, thereby affecting the surface charge of MnO2. Competition of Bisphenol A (BPA), used as a target compound here, and Mn(II) to interact with reactive surface sites may cause suppression of the oxidative ability of MnO2. This suppressive effect becomes more effective in the presence of oxyanions such as phosphate or silicate at concentrations comparable to those encountered in natural waters. Unlike nitrate, adsorption of phosphate or silicate onto birnessite increased in the presence of Mn(II) added or generated through H2O2-induced reduction of MnO2. This suggests that naturally occurring anions and H2O2 may have synergetic effects on the reactivity of birnessite-type manganese oxide at a range of environmentally relevant H2O2 amounts. As layered structure manganese oxides play a key role in the global carbon cycle as well as pollutant dynamics, the impact of environmental levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2/MnO2 molar ratio ≤ 0.3) should be considered in environmental fate and transport models.

Abstract
An environmental-friendly plant polyphenol, catechin (CAT), was applied in Fe(III) activated persulfate (PS) system for naproxen (NPX) degradation in this research. Reaction kinetics, parameters, NPX degradation products and reaction mechanism were investigated. Combining the results of quenching experiments as well as Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), it was observed that SO4•- was critical in NPX degradation, and the contribution of HO• was minor in the Fe(III)/CAT/PS system. O2•- was generated during the reaction but did not contribute to NPX degradation. SO4•- and HO• were produced from the PS activation by Fe(II), which was formed from the transient complexing and reduction process between Fe(III) and CAT. The effects of Fe(III), CAT, PS concentration and pH value on NPX degradation were evaluated. Moreover, the mineralization rate was 20.2%, and the toxicity of the treated solution were lower than the initial solution. Nine possible intermediates were determined when using LC-QTOF-MS to analyze, and three degradation pathways were put ward. The results proved that CAT could accelerate the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II), consequently to strengthen PS activation without light. It was a promising oxidation technology as it offered an energy-saving and hypo-toxic way for refractory organic pollutants treatment, and it was applicable at a comparatively wide pH range.

Abstract
Although photo-driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been developed to treat wastewater, few studies have investigated the feasibility of AOPs to simultaneously remove antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and micropollutants (MPs). This study employed a modified photo-Fenton process using ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) to chelate iron(III), thus maintaining the reaction pH in a neutral range. Simultaneous removal of ARB and associated extracellular (e-ARGs) and intracellular ARGs (i-ARGs), was assessed by bacterial cell culture, qPCR and atomic force microscopy. The removal of five MPs was also evaluated by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. A low dose comprising 0.1 mM Fe(III), 0.2 mM EDDS, and 0.3 mM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was found to be effective for decreasing ARB by 6-log within 30 min, and e-ARGs by 6-log within 10 min. No ARB regrowth occurred after 48-h, suggesting that the proposed process is an effective disinfectant against ARB. Moreover, five recalcitrant MPs (carbamazepine, diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, mecoprop and benzotriazole at an initial concentration of 10 μg/L each) were >99% removed after 30 min treatment in ultrapure water. The modified photo-Fenton process was also validated using synthetic wastewater and real secondary wastewater effluent as matrices, and results suggest the dosage should be doubled to ensure equivalent removal performance. Collectively, this study demonstrated that the modified process is an optimistic 'one-stop' solution to simultaneously mitigate both chemical and biological hazards.

Abstract
P-cresol is a highly toxic phenolic pollutant in coal chemical wastewater. The effective removal of p-cresol is of great significance to the ecological environment. In this study, the degradation of p-cresol by the Fe(III)-EDDS/H2O2 Fenton-like reaction modified by Mn2+ was investigated. The results showed that the removal rate of p-cresol could be significantly increased by the addition of Mn2+ under neutral and weakly alkaline conditions (pH 6.5-8.5). Acidic conditions (pH 3.5) were not conducive to the Fenton-like reaction. This is because a neutral or weakly alkaline environment is conducive to Mn2+-EDDS complex formation, which can produce O2·- to accelerate the reduction of Fe(III), and the efficiency of p-cresol degradation through a Fenton-like reaction catalyzed by the Fe(III)-EDDS complex is significantly improved. In addition, the degradation of EDDS through ·OH was reduced by O2·-, which maintained and stabilized the Mn2+-EDDS complex and Fe(III)-EDDS complex. Under neutral conditions, the optimal dosage of Fe(III) is 0.7 mM, and the optimal molar ratios are EDDS/Fe(III) = 1: 1, Mn2+/Fe(III) = 1: 1, and H2O2/Fe(III) = 15: 1. The addition of free radical clearance isopropanol and CHCl3 proved that ·OH was the main active substance in the p-cresol degradation process.

Abstract
In recent years, the safety and ecology threat of cyanobacterial burst has drawn wide concern, especially the release of toxic microcystin-LR (MC-LR). To break through the bottleneck of uncomplete MC-LR degradation by conventional physical-chemistry methods, Fenton-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) developed rapidly due to striking degradation efficiency through the potent hydroxyl radicals (HO·) oxidation. Herein, a comprehensive overview is presented on the recent achievements of the various Fenton-based technologies (including conventional Fenton, photo-Fenton, electro-Fenton, ozone-Fenton and sono-Fenton) for MC-LR degradation. In particular, the comparisons between various Fenton-based technologies about advantages and drawbacks are discussed. Based on analyzing the degradation intermediates and pathways, the destruction of Adda chain via hydroxylation was confirmed to be essential for detoxification of MC-LR. Roles of influencing factors such as MC-LR initial concentration, dosages of the catalyst and oxidant, environment alkalinity, natural organic matters (NOMs) as well as other inorganic ions are specifically summarized. This Review also gave special emphasis on technique optimization trends for Fenton application of MC-LR degradation, as well as key challenges and future opportunities in this fast developing field.

Reducing toxicity and antimicrobial activity of a pesticide mixture via photo-Fenton in different aqueous matrices using iron complexes. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2020; 740:140152. Abstract
This is the first study to investigate ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS)/photo-Fenton process to polish real wastewater containing pesticides for possible water reuse. To this end, simultaneous degradation of pesticides ametrine, atrazine, imidacloprid and tebuthiuron was evaluated in distilled water (DW) and in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent at initial pH 6.0. Several operational parameters (Fe3+-EDDS concentration, Fe3+-EDDS molar ratio, EDDS addition patterns and radiation source) were evaluated. 80-98% removal of target pesticides were obtained in DW using 30 μmol L-1 of Fe3+-EDDS with a molar ratio of 1:2 (300 μmol L-1 of H2O2). In addition, the proposed Fe3+-EDDS photo-Fenton at pH 6 was more efficient than classic photo-Fenton at pH 2.7 (30-84% removal). Experiments conducted in the presence of radical trapping agents (2-propanol or chloroform) revealed that HO• was the most active radical during treatment. Matrix composition strongly affected the degradation of target pesticides as a six-fold higher concentration of reagents (180 μmol L-1 of Fe3+-EDDS and 1800 μmol L-1 of H2O2) was needed to reach the same efficiency in STP compared to DW. Even so, first order rate constants corresponding to the degradation of pesticides in DW (k = 0.098-0.85 min-1) were nearly two-fold higher than in STP (k = 0.079-0.49 min-1) under the same radiation source (black-light or solar radiation). Finally, acute toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri and Drosophila melanogaster flies, and antibacterial activity assessed for Escherichia coli were eliminated after the application of the proposed treatment, thus indicating environmental safety for either discharge or reuse of treated wastewater for crop irrigation in agriculture.

Abstract
The present work reported a modified persulfate activation process with a microbial siderophore named desferrioxamine B (DFOB). DFOB was a natural complexing agent and could complex with Fe3+ strongly. The photochemical reactivity of Fe(III)-DFOB was studied. Fe2+ and HO• were produced from Fe(III)-DFOB photolysis. Furthermore, the degradation of atenolol (ATL) was followed in light/persulfate (PS)/Fe(III)-DFOB system. The main oxidative radicals were SO4•- in this system. The results of pH effect showed that there was no obviously fluctuation on ATL degradation efficiency with the pH increased from 2.5 to 8.4. Moreover, kSO4•-,DFOB was determined by laser flash photolysis (LFP) experiments. DFOB had positive effect on Fe2+ formation but negative effect on ATL degradation due to the high react rate constant between DFOB and SO4•-. The effects of chloride and carbonate ion were also investigated. The results in this study proposed the reaction mechanism of the modified persulfate activation process, and it could be applied in neutral and weak-alkaline pH range.

Abstract
The heterogeneous electro-Fenton process degradation of Yellow 2G from wastewater was studied using a batch reactor. The COD of the wastewater used in treatment experiments was 163 mg O2·L-1 and the BOD5 was 17 mg O2·L-1 (hardly biodegradable). The treatment of the wastewater at different current densities (2.5 mA·cm- 2-12.5 mA·cm- 2), solution pH (3 and 6.6), reaction times (5-25 min), electrolyte nature (NaCl, Na2SO4) and electrolyte concentrations (0.15 g·L- 1-1 g·L- 1) was investigated. According to the results, the heterogeneous electro-Fenton process was suitable for the decolorization of wastewater containing Yellow 2G. The optimum conditions were current density of 12.5 mA·cm-2, initial pH of the wastewater neutral, 25 min of electrolysis treatment using an additive steel electrode as a source of catalysis and in the presence of 1 g NaCl·L-1. We obtained easily biodegradable water with a mineralization rate equal to 85% and non-toxicity confirmed by the pea grain germination test.

Abstract
In this review, we have critically examined the alternatives to conventional photo-Fenton process such as the strategies to perform it in circumneutral pH in the so-called photo-Fenton like process. They include iron chelation, iron replacement with another metal and use of iron immobilized on surfaces of solid materials, use of iron oxides, among others. The use of such strategies can be employed to overcome the challenges identified in conventional photo-Fenton, moreover, advantages and drawback of each technique must be clarified and the recent achievements should be shared with the scientific community. The use of a chelating agent to make iron soluble at circumneutral pH presents many advantages when compared to other current techniques. However, the correct understanding of the chelating process, complex activity and the complex resistance along with the mechanism of radical production should be taken into account to prepare an effective photo-Fenton with complexed iron. The review also identifies the current trends in chelate assisted photo-Fenton process and the unexplored areas in this field of study. A discussion about the environmental and safety issues in the application of these methods, with emphasis to the Fe chelation strategy, was also considered with detailed review over the past ten years.

Abstract
This work reports the first investigation on the use of EDDS as chelating agent in photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) treatment of water at near-neutral pH. As a case study, the removal of the antidepressant fluoxetine was optimized, using an electrochemical cell composed of an IrO2-based anode an air-diffusion cathode for in-situ H2O2 production. Electrolytic trials at constant current were made in ultrapure water with different electrolytes, as well as in urban wastewater (secondary effluent) at pH 7.2. PEF with Fe(III)-EDDS (1:1) complex as catalyst outperformed electro-Fenton and PEF processes with uncomplexed Fe(II) or Fe(III). This can be explained by: (i) the larger solubilization of iron ions during the trials, favoring the production of •OH from Fenton-like reactions between H2O2 and Fe(II)-EDDS or Fe(III)-EDDS, and (ii) the occurrence of Fe(II) regeneration from Fe(III)-EDDS photoreduction, which was more efficient than conventional photo-Fenton reaction with uncomplexed Fe(III). The greatest drug concentration decays were achieved at low pH, using only 0.10 mM Fe(III)-EDDS, although complete removal in wastewater was feasible only with 0.20 mM Fe(III)-EDDS due to the greater formation of •OH. The effect of the applied current and anode nature was rather insignificant. A progressive destruction of the catalytic complex was unveiled, whereupon the mineralization mainly progressed thanks to the action of •OH adsorbed on the anode surface. Despite the incomplete mineralization using BDD as the anode, a remarkable toxicity decrease was determined. Fluoxetine degradation yielded F- and NO3- ions, along with several aromatic intermediates. These included two chloro-organics, as a result of the anodic oxidation of Cl- to active chlorine. A detailed mechanism for the Fe(III)-EDDS-catalyzed PEF treatment of fluoxetine in urban wastewater is finally proposed.

Abstract
Hybrid magnetite/maghemite nanoparticles (MNP) coated with waste-sourced bio-based substances (BBS) were synthesized and studied for the degradation of phenol, chosen as a model pollutant, in water. A systematic study was undertaken in order to rationalize MNP-BBS behavior and optimize their performance. The effect of experimental parameters, such as light irradiation, addition of hydrogen peroxide, and the ratio between hydrogen peroxide and MNP-BBS concentrations, was studied. The generation of hydroxyl radicals was assessed, and the recovery and re-cycle of the material was investigated. Our results indicate that phenol degradation could be attained by both Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, with higher efficiency in dark condition and in the presence of a suitable amount of hydrogen peroxide. Evidence was obtained for the roles of iron ions leached from the materials as well as of organic matter released in the solution upon partial photodegradation of the organic coating. The reusability tests indicated a lower but still valid performance of the material. Optimization of the experimental conditions was performed to achieve the highest efficiency in substrate degradation, and fundamental insights into the mechanism of the MNP-BBS Fenton-like reaction were obtained.

Abstract
The main purpose of this pilot plant study was to compare degradation of five microcontaminants (MCs) (antipyrine, carbamazepine, caffeine, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole at 100 μg/L) by solar photo-Fenton mediated by EDDS and solar/Fe:EDDS/S2O82-. The effects of the Fe:EDDS ratio (1:1 and 1:2), initial iron species (Fe(II) or Fe(III) at 0.1 mM) and oxidizing agent (S2O82- or H2O2 at 0.25-1.5 mM) were evaluated. The higher the S2O82- concentration, the faster MC degradation was, with S2O82- consumption always below 0.6 mM and similar degradation rates with Fe(II) and Fe(III). Under the best conditions (Fe 0.1 mM, Fe:EDDS 1:1, S2O82- 1 mM) antipyrine, carbamazepine, caffeine, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole at 100 μg/L where 90% eliminated applying a solar energy of 2 kJ/L (13 min at 30 W/m2 solar radiation <400 nm). Therefore, S2O82- promotes lower consumption of EDDS as Fe:EDDS 1:1 was better than Fe:EDDS 1:2. In photo-Fenton-like processes at circumneutral pH, EDDS with S2O82- is an alternative to H2O2 as an oxidizing agent.

Abstract
Urban-waste bio-organic substances (UW-BOS) have been shown to be capable of extending the photo-Fenton reaction to mildly acidic conditions. In this study, the effects of pH (3-7), UW-BOS, H2O2 and iron concentrations on the photo-Fenton process were systematically assessed using a Doehlert experimental design and response surface methodology for two UW-BOS (CVT230 and FORSUD). Solutions of the model antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ) were irradiated in a solar simulator equipped with a 550 W Xenon lamp. The results showed that for UW-BOS contents below 30 mg L-1, SDZ removal proceeds at pH 5 with similar rates for both CVT230 and FORSUD, regardless of Fe(III) concentration. For 50 mg L-1 of UW-BOS or higher, CVT230 performs better than FORSUD, even for low Fe(III) content (1-3 mg L-1). In contrast, half-life times of 35-40 min can only be achieved under mildly acidic conditions with FORSUD for iron concentrations higher than 10 mg L-1. The better performance of CVT230 can be associated with its high hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, low E2:E3, higher iron content and possibly higher yields of triplet reactive species generation upon solar irradiation. The most appropriate conditions for each UW-BOS studied are discussed for the first time, which are advantageous for possible engineered applications.

Abstract
The removal of pharmaceuticals present in wastewater is receiving more and more attention since most of them are refractory to traditional biological treatments. Many advanced oxidation processes have been reported in literature. However, cost estimations are not available for most of them. Recently, more environment friendly processes using solar radiation are gaining importance. The solar photo-Fenton process has been used with different reactor configurations and scales and seems to be the most promising technology for reducing operation costs. In addition, the use of ferrioxalate-aided systems allows the use of pHs close to neutrality, that reduces costs before disposal (not calculated here). The possible use of photovoltaic panels for an energy-free process makes it very interesting for an economic evaluation. Results for the homogeneous solar photo-Fenton process show that when pure compounds are present in water, mineralization is in the range 18-21% with an estimated operation cost of 0.739-0.85 €/m3. An increase in mineralization up to 60-80.6% requires either the use of ferrioxalate (slightly increasing costs to 1.1-1.56 €/m3) or the addition of very high concentration of H2O2, that rises costs substantially. The presence of pharmaceuticals in a Waste Water Treatment Plant effluent reduces mineralization (maximum of 20%) also increasing costs. On the other hand, published results confirm that heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 (both suspended or immobilized) is still far to compete with homogeneous photo-Fenton process in operation costs. The development of new reactor systems and modified photo-catalysts are needed to compete as an efficient applicable technology in the near future.

Abstract
The complete removal of biorecalcitrant xenobiotics, including most notably the pharmaceutical pollutants, by advanced oxidation processes is often difficult to be reached in urban or industrial wastewater because of the high concentration of organic and inorganic scavengers that compete with the xenobiotics for the oxidizing species. This work investigates a coupled treatment train in which wastewater effluents are pretreated with a negatively charged loose nanofiltration (NF) membrane (HydraCoRe70, made up of sulfonated polyethersulfone) to enhance the removal of xenobiotics with the thermal Fenton process. Carbamazepine (CBZ), a drug prescribed mainly for epilepsy treatment, is used here as a model xenobiotic. After optimizing the conditions for separation and degradation, the NF-Fenton approach was applied to both synthetic wastewater and real samples to assess the overall efficiency of CBZ removal. The Fenton degradation of CBZ was drastically enhanced in nanofiltered samples, thanks to the removal by the membrane of nearly all organic matter that would otherwise consume the reactive oxidizing species (e.g., the hydroxyl radical). On the basis of a preliminary treatment cost analysis, it can be concluded that the combined process is potentially applicable to the treatment of several kinds of wastewaters (e.g., industrial ones) to favor the removal of biorecalcitrant contaminants. Key cost savings of NF-Fenton concern the lower amounts of Fenton reagents needed to degrade CBZ and (even more importantly) the decreased levels of acids and bases for pH adjustment before and after the oxidative process because of the lower buffer capacity of the NF permeate compared to feed wastewater, after the removal by the NF of many inorganic ions and most organic carbon.

Abstract
The exploitation of organic waste as a source of bio-based substances to be used in environmental applications is gaining increasing interest. In the present research, compost-derived bio-based substances (BBS-Cs) were used to prepare hybrid magnetic nanoparticles (HMNPs) to be tested as an auxiliary in advanced oxidation processes. Hybrid magnetic nanoparticles can be indeed recovered at the end of the treatment and re-used in further water purification cycles. The research aimed to give new insights on the photodegradation of caffeine, chosen as marker of anthropogenic pollution in natural waters, and representative of the contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Hybrid magnetic nanoparticles were synthetized starting from Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts and BBS-C aqueous solution, in alkali medium, via co-precipitation. Hybrid magnetic nanoparticles were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The effect of pH, added hydrogen peroxide, and dissolved oxygen on caffeine photodegradation in the presence of HMNPs was assessed. The results allow for the hypothesis that caffeine abatement can be obtained in the presence of HMNPs and hydrogen peroxide through a heterogeneous photo-Fenton mechanism. The role of hydroxyl radicals in the process was assessed examining the effect of a selective hydroxyl radical scavenger on the caffeine degradation kinetic.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to analyze brain and body iron levels among patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and normal controls (NCs). A total of 90 participants (30 MCI, 30 AD, 30 NC) were enrolled. Brain iron content was quantified using susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI). Phase values were used to calculate bilateral iron content in the hippocampus (HP), substantia nigra, red nucleus (RN), dentate nucleus (DN), caudate nucleus (CN), globus pallidus (GP), putamen (PUT), frontal white matter, temporal cortex (TC), and parietal cortex. Body iron indices, including serum iron, serum transferrin, ferritin and total iron binding capacity, were measured. Phase values of the left (L)-DN, L-CN, and bilateral PUT in the MCI group were significantly lower compared with NC group. Phase values of the right (R)-RN, bilateral DN, and bilateral PUT in the AD group were significantly lower compared with the MCI group. Phase values of the bilateral HP, DN, RN, CN, GP, PUT, and L-TC in the AD group were significantly lower compared with the NC group. Serum ferritin levels in the MCI and AD groups were significantly lower compared with the NC group. Only serum iron in the AD group was positively associated with iron content in the R-HP. Brain iron deposition and body iron levels both increased in MCI and AD patients, however, excessive brain iron accumulation may have no association with body iron level. SWI was particularly effective at recognizing the presence of brain iron in the MCI and AD groups.

Abstract
The application of UV-Fenton processes with two chelating agents, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) and [S,S]-ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid ([S,S]-EDDS), for the treatment of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) at natural pH was investigated. The half-wave potentials of Fe(III/II)NTA and Fe(III/II)EDDS and the UV photolysis of the complexes in Milli-Q water and OSPW were compared. Under optimum conditions, UV-NTA-Fenton exhibited higher efficiency than UV-EDDS-Fenton in the removal of acid extractable organic fraction (66.8% for the former and 50.0% for the latter) and aromatics (93.5% for the former and 74.2% for the latter). Naphthenic acids (NAs) removals in the UV-NTA-Fenton process (98.4%, 86.0%, and 81.0% for classical NAs, NAs + O (oxidized NAs with one additional oxygen atom), and NAs + 2O (oxidized NAs with two additional oxygen atoms), respectively) under the experimental conditions were much higher than those in the UV-H2O2 (88.9%, 48.7%, and 54.6%, correspondingly) and NTA-Fenton (69.6%, 35.3%, and 44.2%, correspondingly) processes. Both UV-NTA-Fenton and UV-EDDS-Fenton processes presented promoting effect on the acute toxicity of OSPW toward Vibrio fischeri. No significant change of the NTA toxicity occurred during the photolysis of Fe(III)NTA; however, the acute toxicity of EDDS increased as the photolysis of Fe(III)EDDS proceeded. NTA is a much better agent than EDDS for the application of UV-Fenton process in the treatment of OSPW.

Abstract
4-tert-butylphenol (4-t-BP), an endocrine disrupting chemical, is widely distributed in natural bodies of water but is difficult to biodegrade. In this study, we focused on the transformation of 4-t-BP in photo-initiated degradation processes. The steady-state photolysis and laser flash photolysis (LFP) experiments were conducted in order to elucidate its degradation mechanism. Identification of products was performed using the GC-MS, LC-MS and theoretical calculation techniques. The oxidation pathway of 4-t-BP by hydroxyl radical (HO) was also studied and H2O2 was added to produce HO. 4-tert-butylcatechol and 4-tert-butylphenol dimer were produced in 4-t-BP direct photolysis. 4-tert-butylcatechol and hydroquinone were produced by the oxidation of HO. But the formation mechanism of 4-tert-butylcatechol in the two processes was different. The benzene ring was fractured in 4-t-BP oxidation process and 29% of TOC was degraded after 16h irradiation.

Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the application of calcium peroxide (CP) activated with Fe(II) chelated by (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) to enhance trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation in aqueous solution. It was indicated that EDDS prevented soluble iron from precipitation, and the optimum molar ratio of Fe(II)/EDDS to accelerate TCE degradation was 1/1. The influences of initial TCE, CP and Fe(II)-EDDS concentration were also investigated. The combination of CP and Fe(II)-EDDS complex rendered the efficient degradation of TCE at near neutral pH range. Chemical probe and scavenger tests identified that TCE degradation mainly owed to the oxidation of HO while O2(-) promoted HO generation. Cl(-), HCO3(-) and humic acid were found to inhibit CP/Fe(II)-EDDS performance on different levels. In conclusion, the application of CP activated with Fe(II)-EDDS complex is a promising technology in chemical remediation of groundwater, while further research in practical implementation is needed.
