Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Innovative Sorbents in Restoring Enzymatic Activity of Soil Contaminated with Bisphenol A (BPA)

As part of the multifaceted strategies developed to shape the common environmental policy, considerable attention is now being paid to assessing the degree of environmental degradation in soil under xenobiotic pressure. Bisphenol A (BPA) has only been marginally investigated in this ecosystem context. Therefore, research was carried out to determine the biochemical properties of soils contaminated with BPA at two levels of contamination: 500 mg and 1000 mg BPA kg-1 d.m. of soil. Reliable biochemical indicators of soil changes, whose activity was determined in the pot experiment conducted, were used: dehydrogenases, catalase, urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase, and β-glucosidase. Using the definition of soil health as the ability to promote plant growth, the influence of BPA on the growth and development of Zea mays, a plant used for energy production, was also tested. As well as the biomass of aerial parts and roots, the leaf greenness index (SPAD) of Zea mays was also assessed. A key aspect of the research was to identify those of the six remediating substances-molecular sieve, zeolite, sepiolite, starch, grass compost, and fermented bark-whose use could become common practice in both environmental protection and agriculture. Exposure to BPA revealed the highest sensitivity of dehydrogenases, urease, and acid phosphatase and the lowest sensitivity of alkaline phosphatase and catalase to this phenolic compound. The enzyme response generated a reduction in the biochemical fertility index (BA21) of 64% (500 mg BPA) and 70% (1000 mg BPA kg-1 d.m. of soil). The toxicity of BPA led to a drastic reduction in root biomass and consequently in the aerial parts of Zea mays. Compost and molecular sieve proved to be the most effective in mitigating the negative effect of the xenobiotic on the parameters discussed. The results obtained are the first research step in the search for further substances with bioremediation potential against both soil and plants under BPA pressure.

Toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues BPF and BPS on the free-floating macrophyte Salvinia biloba

Evidence linking the toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) to environmental and public-health issues has led to restrictions on its use. This compound has been gradually replaced with analogues proposed as a safer alternative, normally bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS), but these substitutes are structurally almost identical to BPA, suggesting they may pose similar risks. The effects of BPA and these analogues were compared for antioxidant activity, lipid peroxidation, free-radical generation, photosynthetic pigments, and chlorophyll fluorescence in Salvinia biloba Raddi (S. biloba) plants exposed to environmentally relevant and sublethal concentrations (1, 10, 50, 100 and 150 μM). Bisphenol exposure promoted alterations in most of the physiological parameters investigated, with BPS toxicity differing slightly from that of the analogues. Furthermore, S. biloba removed similar levels of BPA and BPF from aqueous solutions with ≈70% removed at the 150 μM concentration, while BPS was less effectively removed, with only 23% removed at 150 μM. These findings show that high concentrations of bisphenols (10≥) are toxic to S. biloba, and even typical environmental levels (≤1 μM) can induce metabolic changes in plants, bringing to light that both BPA and its substitutes BPF and BPS pose risks to aquatic ecosystems.

Ferroptosis is the key cellular process mediating Bisphenol A responses in Chlamydomonas and a promising target for enhancing microalgae-based bioremediation

Microplastics are one of the major pollutants in aquatic environments. Among their components, Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most abundant and dangerous, leading to endocrine disorders deriving even in different types of cancer in mammals. However, despite this evidence, the xenobiotic effects of BPA over plantae and microalgae still need to be better understood at the molecular level. To fill this gap, we characterized the physiological and proteomic response of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii during long-term BPA exposure by analyzing physiological and biochemical parameters combined with proteomics. BPA imbalanced iron and redox homeostasis, disrupting cell function and triggering ferroptosis. Intriguingly, this microalgae defense against this pollutant is recovering at both molecular and physiological levels while starch accumulation at 72 h of BPA exposure. In this work, we addressed the molecular mechanisms involved in BPA exposure, demonstrating for the first time the induction of ferroptosis in a eukaryotic alga and how ROS detoxification mechanisms and other specific proteomic rearrangements reverted this situation. These results are of great significance not only for understanding the BPA toxicology or exploring the molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis in microalgae but also for defining novel target genes for microplastic bioremediation efficient strain development.

Enhanced degradation of bisphenol A: Influence of optimization of removal, kinetic model studies, application of machine learning and microalgae-bacteria consortia

Bisphenol A (BPA), a typical endocrine disruptor and a contaminant of emerging concern (CECs), has detrimental impacts not only on the environment and ecosystems, but also on human health. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the degrading processes of BPA in order to diminish its persistent effects on ecological environmental safety. With this objective, the present study reports on the effectiveness of biotic/abiotic factors in optimizing BPA removal and evaluates the kinetic models of the biodegradation processes. The results showed that BPA affected chlorophyll a, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and photosystem intrinsic PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm) in the microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa, which degraded 43.0 % of BPA (8.0 mg L^-1) under general experimental conditions. The bacteria consortium AEF21 could remove 55.4 % of BPA (20 mg L^-1) under orthogonal test optimization (temperature was 32 °C, pH was 8.0, inoculum was 6.0 %) and the prediction of artificial neural network (ANN) of machine learning (R² equal to 0.99 in training, test, and validation phase). The microalgae-bacteria consortia have a high removal rate of 57.5 % of BPA (20.0 mg L^-1). The kinetic study revealed that the removal processes of BPA by microalgae, bacteria, and microalgae-bacteria consortia all followed the Monod's kinetic model. This work provided a new perspective to apply artificial intelligence to predict the degradation of BPA and to understand the kinetic processes of BPA biodegradation by integrated biological approaches, as well as a novel research strategy to achieve environmental CECs elimination for long-term ecosystem health.

Dualistic effects of bisphenol A on growth, photosynthetic and oxidative stress of duckweed (Lemna minor)

In this study, we exposed duckweed (Lemna minor), a floating freshwater plant, to BPA at different concentrations (0, 1, 5, 20, and 50 mg/L) for 7 days so as to investigate the effects of BPA on its growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant system, and osmotic substances. It was found that BPA had the acute toxic effects of "low promotion and high inhibition" on growth and photosynthesis. Specifically, BPA at a low concentration (5 mg/L) significantly promoted the plant growth and improved the concentration of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b, and total Chl ) of L. minor. However, BPA at a high concentration (50 mg/L) significantly inhibited the plant growth, the Chl content, and the maximal photochemical efficiency (F_v/F_m). Furthermore, BPA with high concentration (50 mg/L) induced ROS accumulation and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, POD, APX, and GR) and the contents of antioxidant substances (GSH, proline, and T-AOC), which indicated that L. minor might tolerate BPA toxicity by activating an antioxidant defense system. The correlation analysis revealed that the fresh weight of L. minor was significantly and positively correlated with photosynthesis and the contents of soluble protein and sugar, while it was negatively correlated with the content of H₂O₂. Totally, these results showed that BPA at different concentrations had dualistic effects on the growth of L. minor, which was attributed to the alterations of photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and osmotic regulation systems and provided a novel insight for studying the effects of BPA on aquatic plant physiology.

Effects of bisphenol A on antioxidation and nitrogen assimilation of maize seedlings roots

Bisphenol A (BPA) is becoming a potential environmental toxicity factor. However, BPA's effect and function mechanism on maize roots remain unknown. Here, we investigated characters of root growth of maize seedlings exposed to BPA for 8 d and without BPA for 3 d, and a series of indicators on reactive oxygen homeostasis and nitrogen assimilation were measured. High-dose BPA(15 and 50 mg·L^-1) suppressed the root growth and caused increased contents of O₂^ˑ-, H₂O₂ and MDA in maize seedling roots. The disturbed ROS homeostasis resulted from the change of antioxidant enzymes, including the increase of APX, GPX, and CAT, and decrease of SOD and POD, and a decrease of antioxidant substance GSH. Meanwhile, High-dose BPA caused a decrease in the soluble protein content, nitrate reductase (NR), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), and glutamine oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GOGAT) under the BPA processing phase and recovery period. The low-dose BPA（1.5 and 5 mg·L^-1）significantly promoted root growth of maize seedlings and maintained the ROS homeostasis through antioxidant enzyme APX and GPX eliminating redundant ROS. Our results showed that BPA could cause a dual effect on the root growth of maize seedlings, that is, promotion of low-dose and inhibition of high-dose, through ROS homeostasis and nitrogen assimilation in Zea mays.

Influence of bisphenol A on growth and metabolism of Vicia faba ssp. minor seedlings depending on lighting conditions

The effect of one of anthropogenic pollutants, i.e., 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol, called 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane (BPA), at 30 and 120 mg L^-1 concentrations in the darkness (DK) or dark/light (DK/LT) on growth and selected elements of metabolism of seedlings and leaf discs of Vicia faba ssp. minor was studied. Treatment with 120 mg L^-1 BPA had greater effects which were reflected by increase in the number of necrotic changes in roots and stems as well as in leaf discs and reduction of the length of roots DK and DK/LT, and volume of roots in the DK group. However, minimal and no influence on the fresh and dry weight of roots and stems in plants growing under both types of lighting conditions were observed. In both DK and DK/LT groups these effects were correlated with reduced amounts of storage and cell wall-bound sugars as well as of proteins while in the DK/LT additionally with reduced soluble sugar levels in the roots and increased amounts of hydrogen peroxide and phenols in roots and stems as well as in treatment solutions, where these compounds were released. We suggest that endogenous phenols and BPA can be metabolised in roots and stems to quinones. It seems that TB-1,4-BQ, is the one of that of the five studied quinones. We expect that the results of this paper will help to answer the following question: does the phytomeliorative and phytosanitative V. faba ssp. minor plant is enough to be resistant on negative effects, and to be useful to reduce increasing amount of BPA in the environment?

Toxic Effects of Bisphenol A and Bisphenol S on Chlorella Pyrenoidosa under Single and Combined Action

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an important industrial chemical; bisphenol S (BPS) is a substitute for BPA. Both are frequently detected in rivers, sewage, and surface water, and have a great impact on the water environment. The effects of BPA and BPS on cell growth, chlorophyll a content, and oxidative stress of Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) were studied. When BPA and BPS acted alone or in combination, compared with the blank control group, the growth of C. pyrenoidosa in the experimental group showed a pattern of “low promotion and high inhibition”, and the inhibition rate reached the maximum on the 6th day. Under the combined action, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level of C. pyrenoidosa first increased, and then decreased. In addition, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) increased with the increase in combined concentration. In the 0.5 P treatment group, SOD and POD activity reached peak values of 29.59 U/mg∙prot and 1.35 U/mg∙prot, respectively. The combined toxicity of BPA and BPS to C. pyrenoidosa was evaluated as a synergistic effect by using toxicity unit and additive index methods. This study evaluated the effects of BPA and BPS on algae in the aquatic environment, providing some data support for their potential ecological risks.

Growth, pigment changes, and photosystem II activity in the aquatic macrophyte Lemna minor exposed to bisphenol A

As a result of its high production, bisphenol A (BPA) has become ubiquitous in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of BPA at 10 mg L^-1 on Lemna minor after 7 days of exposure under controlled conditions according to ISO 20079. BPA statistically reduced the total frond number and frond area, while frond number per colony was significantly elevated in BPA-treated group. However, no change was recorded in root number, while root length was significantly reduced by BPA. BPA also decreased the content of Chl a, Chl b, Chl a + b, and carotenoid by 36%, 44%, 38%, and 32%, respectively, versus the control leading to a decrease in the quantum yield of photosystem II. In addition, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) values were 2.4- and 4.5-fold higher in light than in dark conditions for control and BPA-treated plants, respectively. Thus, there is a significant activation (61.8%; p<0.01) of PSII photoprotection mechanism (NPQ) in BPA-treated plants compared to control but without removing the negative effect of BPA on PSII. The total amount of soluble sugars was reduced by 40% compared to control, and starch accumulation was mainly observed in fronds exposed to BPA. Even if the response patterns of Lemna minor based on fresh and dry weight measurements were less sensitive in our experiment conditions, further studies should be addressed since BPA represents a threat to the dynamic equilibrium governing aquatic ecosystems.

Bisphenol A-A Dangerous Pollutant Distorting the Biological Properties of Soil

Bisphenol A (BPA), with its wide array of products and applications, is currently one of the most commonly produced chemicals in the world. A narrow pool of data on BPA–microorganism–plant interaction mechanisms has stimulated the following research, the aim of which has been to determine the response of the soil microbiome and crop plants, as well as the activity of soil enzymes exposed to BPA pressure. A range of disturbances was assessed, based on the activity of seven soil enzymes, an abundance of five groups of microorganisms, and the structural diversity of the soil microbiome. The condition of the soil was verified by determining the values of the indices: colony development (CD), ecophysiological diversity (EP), the Shannon–Weaver index, and the Simpson index, tolerance of soil enzymes, microorganisms and plants (TI_BPA), biochemical soil fertility (BA₂₁), the ratio of the mass of aerial parts to the mass of plant roots (PR), and the leaf greenness index: Soil and Plant Analysis Development (SPAD). The data brought into sharp focus the adverse effects of BPA on the abundance and ecophysiological diversity of fungi. A change in the structural composition of bacteria was noted. Bisphenol A had a more beneficial effect on the Proteobacteria than on bacteria from the phyla Actinobacteria or Bacteroidetes. The microbiome of the soil exposed to BPA was numerously represented by bacteria from the genus Sphingomonas. In this object pool, the highest fungal OTU richness was achieved by the genus Penicillium, a representative of the phylum Ascomycota. A dose of 1000 mg BPA kg⁻¹ d.m. of soil depressed the activity of dehydrogenases, urease, acid phosphatase and β-glucosidase, while increasing that of alkaline phosphatase and arylsulfatase. Spring oilseed rape and maize responded significantly negatively to the soil contamination with BPA.

Analysis of the biodegradation and phytotoxicity mechanism of TNT, RDX, HMX in alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

The aim of this study was to reveal the mechanism underlying the toxicity of TNT (trinitrotoluene), RDX (cyclotrimethylene trinitroamine), and HMX (cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine) explosives pollution in plants. Here, the effects of exposure to these three explosives were examined on chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the metabolite spectrum in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) plants. The degradation rates for TNT, RDX, and HMX by alfalfa were 26.8%, 20.4%, and 18.4%, respectively, under hydroponic conditions. TNT caused damage to the microstructure of the plant roots and inhibited photosynthesis, whereas RDX and HMX induced only minor changes. Exposure to any of the three explosives caused disturbances in the oxidase system. Non-targeted metabolomics identified a total of 6185 metabolites. TNT exposure induced the appearance of 609 differentially expressed metabolites (189 upregulated, 420 downregulated), RDX exposure induced 197 differentially expressed metabolites (155 upregulated and 42 downregulated), and HMX induced 234 differentially expressed metabolites (132 upregulated and 102 downregulated). Of these differentially expressed metabolites, lipids and lipid-like molecules were the main metabolites induced by explosives poisoning. TNT mainly caused significant changes in the alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism metabolic pathways, RDX mainly caused disorders in the arginine biosynthesis metabolic pathway, and HMX disrupted the oxidative phosphorylation metabolic pathway. Taken together, the results show that exposure to TNT, RDX, and HMX leads to imbalances in plant photosynthetic characteristics and antioxidant enzyme systems, changes the basic metabolism of plants, and has significant ecotoxicity effects.

Evaluation of the spatiotemporal effects of bisphenol A on the leaves of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa

The organic pollutant bisphenol A (BPA) causes adverse effects on aquatic biota. The present study explored the toxicity mechanism of environmentally occurring BPA concentrations (0.03-3 μg L^-1) on the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa intermediate leaf photosynthetic machinery. A "mosaic" type BPA effect pattern was observed, with "unaffected" and "affected"" leaf areas. In negatively affected leaf areas cells had a dark appearance and lost their chlorophyll auto-fluorescence, while hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) content increased time-dependently. In the "unaffected" leaf areas, cells exhibited increased phenolic compound production. At 1 μg L^-1 of BPA exposure, there was no effect on the fraction of open reaction centers (q_P) compared to control and also no significant effect on the quantum yield of non-regulated non-photochemical energy loss in PSII (Φ_ΝΟ). However, a 3 μg L^-1 BPA application resulted in a significant Φ_ΝΟ increase, even from the first exposure day. Ultrastructural observations revealed electronically dense damaged thylakoids in the plastids, while effects on Golgi dictyosomes and the endoplasmic reticulum were also observed at 3 μg L^-1 BPA. The up-regulated H₂O₂ BPA-derived production seems to be a key factor causing both oxidative damages but probably also triggering retrograde signalling, conferring tolerance to BPA in the "unaffected" leaf areas.

Acute toxicity of Bisphenol A (BPA) to tropical marine and estuarine species from different trophic groups

BPA is chemical pollutant of very high concern due to its toxicity to the environment and risks for human health. Environmental concern consists in BPA entrance into aquatic ecosystems due to acute and chronic toxicity to invertebrates and vertebrates. This study aimed to determine acute BPA toxicity to tropical estuarine-marine species of four trophic levels and integrate BPA toxicity values using species sensitivity distribution (SSD) analysis. Our hypothesis is that BPA toxicity increases towards higher trophic levels. Microalga (Tetraselmis sp.), zooplanktonic grazer (Artemia salina), deposit-feeder invertebrate (Heleobia australis), and omnivorous fish (Poecilia vivipara) were chosen as experimental models. Tetraselmis sp. showed the highest BPA tolerance, without a concentration-dependent response. Species sensitivity have increased from A. salina (LC_50,96h = 107.2 mg L^-1), followed by H. australis (LC_50,96h = 11.53.5 mg L^-1), to P. vivipara (LC_50,96h = 3.5 mg L^-1). Despite the toxicity hierarchy towards trophic levels, which partially supported our hypothesis, SSD did not evidence a clear pattern among estuarine-marine trophic groups. Our study disclosed the sensitivity of not yet investigated species to BPA and, in an integrative way, highlighted BPA toxic effects at different trophic levels. Although estimated acute hazardous concentration (HC5 = 1.18 mg L^-1) for estuarine and marine species was higher than environmentally relevant concentrations, sublethal adverse effects induced by BPA exposure may lead to unbalances in population levels and consequently affect the ecological functioning of tropical coastal systems.

Melatonin promotes metabolism of bisphenol A by enhancing glutathione-dependent detoxification in Solanum lycopersicum L

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely distributed organic compound, is toxic to animals and plants. Here we show the mechanism of BPA detoxification by melatonin (MEL) in tomato, which is otherwise poorly understood in plants. BPA treatment decreased the quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and increased the membrane lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation dose-dependently, whereas exogenous MEL alleviated the BPA effects on Fv/Fm, lipid peroxidation, ROS accumulation and BPA uptake. Furthermore, BPA elevated the glutathione (GSH) content, activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione reductase (GR), and the transcript levels of GSH1, GR1, GST1 and MEL biosynthesis genes (COMT, T5H, and SNAT), whereas BPA + MEL showed even a more profound induction. Silencing GSH1, GR1 and GST1 genes compromised the BPA detoxification potential of tomato plants as revealed by an increased level of ROS, lipid peroxidation and BPA uptake, and a decreased Fv/Fm and GST activity; these changes were alleviated by MEL application. Under in vitro conditions, BPA was glutathionylated by GSH, which was further catalyzed by GST to cysteine and N-acetylcysteine conjugates. These findings suggest a crucial role for MEL in BPA detoxification via GSH and GST, and can be useful to reduce BPA residue for food safety.

Hazards of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure: A systematic review of plant toxicology studies

The widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA) has led to its ubiquity in the natural environment. Thus, BPA is considered as a contaminant of emerging concern. Due to its widespread use, BPA has been detected in a range of soils and surface waters. This is of concern because BPA has been shown to elicit slight to moderate toxicity to plants. Based on current research and our own work, this paper reviews the toxic effects of BPA on plant growth and development, including effects at the macroscopic (e.g. seed germination, root, stem, and leaf growth) and microscopic (photosynthesis, uptake of mineral nutrient, hormone secretion, antioxidant systems, and reproductive genetic behavior) levels. Furthermore, this paper will discuss effects of BPA exposure on metabolic reactions in exposed plant species, and explore the use of high-efficiency plants in BPA pollution control (e.g. phytoremediation). Finally, this paper proposes some ideas for the future of BPA phytotoxicity research.

Effect of Bisphenol A on the extremophilic microalgal strain Picocystis sp. (Chlorophyta) and its high BPA removal ability

Bisphenol A (BPA) effects and removal by an alkaliphilic chlorophyta, Picocystis, were assessed. BPA at low concentrations (0-25 mg L^-1) did not inhibit the Picocystis growth and photosynthesis during 5 days of exposure. At higher BPA concentrations (50 and 75 mg L^-1), the growth inhibition did not exceed 43%. The net photosynthetic activity was dramatically reduced at high BPA concentrations while, the PSII activity was less affected. The exposure to increasing BPA concentrations induced an oxidative stress in Picocystis cells, as evidenced by increased malondialdehyde content and the over-expression of antioxidant activities (ascorbate peroxydase, gluthation-S-transferase and catalase). Picocystis exhibited high BPA removal efficiency, reaching 72% and 40% at 25 and 75 mg L^-1 BPA. BPA removal was ensured mainly by biodegradation/biotransformation processes. Based on these results, the extended tolerance and the high removal ability of Picocystis make her a promising specie for use in BPA bioremediation.

Reactive oxygen species initiate a protective response in plant roots to stress induced by environmental bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA), a contaminant of emerging concern, can affect plant growth and development at high concentrations. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is a general primary response in plants to stress. Here, the aim is to investigate whether ROS in plants play protective roles for stress induced by BPA exposure at environmental concentrations. In this study, soybean roots (seedling, flowering and podding stages) were exposed to 1.5 and 3.0 mg L-1 BPA, and ROS response was measured. The relationship between ROS levels and residual BPA content in soybean roots was evaluated. The results showed that exposure (9 h) to 1.5 mg L-1 BPA elicited changes in ROS production. ROS then gradually accumulated in soybean roots (seedling stage). Exposure to 3.0 mg L-1 BPA elicited a stronger and earlier ROS responses at the flowering and podding stage, but did not lead to membrane lipid peroxidation. Residual BPA content in soybean roots reached peak concentrations after 9 h of exposure, and then gradually decreased at the flowering and podding stage. These results indicate that ROS in soybean roots might be involved in the oxidative metabolism of BPA, which could prevent BPA from damaging exposed plants. In conclusion, the observed ROS metabolic effects may be self-protection responses of plants to stress induced by BPA exposure.

A preliminary analysis of the effects of bisphenol A on the plant root growth via changes in endogenous plant hormones

Bisphenol A (BPA) is ubiquitous in the environment worldwide, affecting plant growth and development. Endogenous plant hormones serve as switches that regulate plant growth and development. However, plants have different physiological requirements and environmental adaptive capacities during the different growth stages. Here, we investigated the effects of BPA on soybean (Glycine max L.) root growth at the three growth stages and analyzed the mechanisms underlying the effects of BPA on the root growth by assessing changes in endogenous hormone. The results showed that low concentration of BPA (1.5mgL-1) improved root growth (except at the seed-filling stage), increased indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content at the first two growth stages, and increased zeatin (ZT) content and decreased gibberellic acid (GA3) content at the seedling stage. But low concentration of BPA caused decreased ethylene (ETH) contents and constant abscisic acid (ABA) content at all three stages. However, BPA at moderate and high concentrations (6.0 and 12.0mgL-1) inhibited root growth, causing the decreased IAA, GA3 and ETH contents and increased ABA content at all three growth stages. The change degrees of above indices were weakened with prolonging the growth stages. After BPA withdrawal, both the root growth and the hormone contents recovered (with the exception of ZT and ETH), and the recovery degrees had negative correlation with the BPA exposure concentration and had positive correlation with the growth stage. Changes in residual BPA content in the roots were also observed at different BPA concentrations and different growth stages. Our results demonstrated the effects of BPA on root growth were related to BPA-induced changes in hormone, which performed differently at various growth stages.

Analysis of effects of a new environmental pollutant, bisphenol A, on antioxidant systems in soybean roots at different growth stages

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an important industrial raw material. Because of its widespread use and increasing release into environment, BPA has become a new environmental pollutant. Previous studies about BPA's effects in plants focus on a certain growth stage. However, the plant's response to pollutants varies at different growth stages. Therefore, in this work, BPA's effects in soybean roots at different growth stages were investigated by determining the reactive oxygen species levels, membrane lipid fatty acid composition, membrane lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant systems. The results showed that low-dose BPA exposure slightly caused membrane lipid peroxidation but didn't activate antioxidant systems at the seedling stage, and this exposure did not affect above process at other growth stages; high-dose BPA increased reactive oxygen species levels and then caused membrane lipid peroxidation at all growth stages although it activated antioxidant systems, and these effects were weaker with prolonging the growth stages. The recovery degree after withdrawal of BPA exposure was negatively related to BPA dose, but was positively related to growth stage. Taken together, the effects of BPA on antioxidant systems in soybean roots were associated with BPA exposure dose and soybean growth stage.
