Soil-specific outcomes in the OECD 216 Nitrogen Transformation Test

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) 216 test guideline investigates the impact of agrochemicals on soil nitrogen transformation. After an evaluation of 465 OECD 216 studies, we describe two distinct yet contrasting outcomes in control nontreated samples that are possible in this testing framework, which we term the "rise" (consistent increases in nitrate concentrations throughout the test period) and "dip" (initial decline in nitrate concentration between Days 0-7, followed by a net-generation of nitrate across Days 7-28) responses. We raise significant concerns that control data from standardized, internationally recognized test guidelines can demonstrate such dissimilar patterns. We propose that, when present, the dip response undermines the intended functioning of the test system and removes the ability to draw appropriate ecotoxicological inferences from the data. In this work, we hypothesize the dip response is a product of conducting the study in low nitrogen content soils. Our results indicate that the dip response can be alleviated by using ammonium sulfate as an immediately available inorganic nitrogen source in place of the guideline-mandated complex, organic lucerne meal, demonstrating the influence of nitrogen availability and accessibility. However, not all low nitrogen soils exhibited the dip response, indicating the involvement of additional unidentified factors. Using our data and real-world regulatory examples, we advocate that datasets displaying the dip response should not be considered valid OECD 216 studies due to the influence of soil properties precluding an assessment of whether any impacts observed are driven solely by the test compound in question or are instead a product of the soil used. We propose methods to account for these soil-specific responses that could be integrated into the conduct and interpretation of OECD 216 studies. Such amendments will improve the reliability and robustness of the study system and enhance confidence in ecotoxicological conclusions derived from OECD 216 datasets. Long-term herbicide residues affect soil multifunctionality and the soil microbial community

Residues of herbicides with the extensive applications may impact the soil ecosystem and ultimately threaten agricultural sustainability. However, the effects of long-term herbicide residues on soil multifunctionality and the soil microbial community remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated relationships between soil multifunctionality and soil microbial communities with residual herbicide concentrations by surveying and analyzing 62 black soil samples collected from an agricultural area in northeastern China. Total residual herbicide concentrations varied from 35 to 568 μg/kg in the soil samples. The response of soil multifunctionality to increasing residual herbicide concentrations exhibited an inverted U-shaped relationship with a peak at approximately 310 μg/kg, with net mineralized organic nitrogen (Nm) and total nitrogen (TN) exhibiting the same trend. Microbial community richness was significantly lower in soil samples with high residual herbicide concentrations (> 310 μg/kg, HG) compared to low residual herbicide concentrations (< 310 μg/kg, LG). In addition, the relative abundances of specific keystone microbial genera differed significantly between LG and HG: norank_f_Acetobacteraceae, norank_f_Caldilineaceae, Candidatus_Alysiosphaera, and Gonytrichum. The relative abundances of these genera were also significantly correlated with soil multifunctionality. Structural equation models (SEMs) further showed that herbicide residues influenced soil multifunctionality by affecting these specific keystone genera. Our study demonstrates that long-term herbicide residues significantly impact the multifunctionality of agricultural black soil, where low concentrations stimulate while high concentrations inhibit, underscoring the need for reasonable application of herbicides to maintain soil ecosystem health.

The effect of natural products used as pesticides on the soil microbiota: OECD 216 nitrogen transformation test fails to identify effects that were detected via q-PCR microbial abundance measurement

BACKGROUND

Natural products present an environmentally attractive alternative to synthetic pesticides which have been implicated in the off-target effect. Currently, the assessment of pesticide toxicity on soil microorganisms relies on the OECD 216 N transformation assay (OECD stands for the Organisation Economic Co-operation and Development, which is a key international standard-setting organisation). We tested the hypotheses that (i) the OECD 216 assay fails to identify unacceptable effects of pesticides on soil microbiota compared to more advanced molecular and standardized tests, and (ii) the natural products tested (dihydrochalcone, isoflavone, aliphatic phenol, and spinosad) are less toxic to soil microbiota compared to a synthetic pesticide compound (3,5-dichloraniline). We determined the following in three different soils: (i) ammonium (NH4 +) and nitrate (NO3 -) soil concentrations, as dictated by the OECD 216 test, and (ii) the abundance of phylogenetically (bacteria and fungi) and functionally distinct microbial groups [ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB)] using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR).

RESULTS

All pesticides tested exhibited limited persistence, with spinosad demonstrating the highest persistence. None of the pesticides tested showed clear dose-dependent effects on NH4 + and NO3 - levels and the observed effects were <25% of the control, suggesting no unacceptable impacts on soil microorganisms. In contrast, q-PCR measurements revealed (i) distinct negative effects on the abundance of total bacteria and fungi, which were though limited to one of the studied soils, and (ii) a significant reduction in the abundance of both AOA and AOB across soils. This reduction was attributed to both natural products and 3,5-dichloraniline.

CONCLUSION

Our findings strongly advocate for a revision of the current regulatory framework regarding the toxicity of pesticides to soil microbiota, which should integrate advanced and well-standardized tools. © 2024 The Authors. Mechanisms of adsorption and functionalization of biochar for pesticides: A review

Agricultural production relies heavily on pesticides. However, factors like inefficient application, pesticide resistance, and environmental conditions reduce their effective utilization in agriculture. Subsequently, pesticides transfer into the soil, adversely affecting its physicochemical properties, microbial populations, and enzyme activities. Different pesticides interacting can lead to combined toxicity, posing risks to non-target organisms, biodiversity, and organism-environment interactions. Pesticide exposure may cause both acute and chronic effects on human health. Biochar, with its high specific surface area and porosity, offers numerous adsorption sites. Its stability, eco-friendliness, and superior adsorption capabilities render it an excellent choice. As a versatile material, biochar finds use in agriculture, environmental management, industry, energy, and medicine. Added to soil, biochar helps absorb or degrade pesticides in contaminated areas, enhancing soil microbial activity. Current research primarily focuses on biochar produced via direct pyrolysis for pesticide adsorption. Studies on functionalized biochar for this purpose are relatively scarce. This review examines biochar's pesticide absorption properties, its characteristics, formation mechanisms, environmental impact, and delves into adsorption mechanisms, functionalization methods, and their prospects and limitations.

"Structural responses of non-targeted bacterial and hppd communities to the herbicide tembotrione in soil"

Tembotrione (TBT) is a β-triketone herbicide targeting the 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase enzyme (4-HPPD) of weeds. This molecule can also affect soil microorganisms, either through both direct and indirect toxic effects for microorganisms expressing 4-HPPD, or by promoting tolerant and/or degrading microbial populations. Our study aimed to characterize the impacts of TBT on the diversity of total- and hppd (coding for 4-HPPD) -soil bacterial communities. Soil microcosms were treated with the active ingredient TBT at the recommended field dose (100 g a.i/ha; D1) or the tenfold dose (D10). Soil samples were collected from 0 to 55 days post-treatment to study: (i) total- and hppd-bacterial diversities using 16SrRNA and hppd amplicons sequencing, respectively; (ii) TBT dissipation in soil. Both total- and hppd-bacterial community composition was not affected by TBT treatments (D1 and D10). However, D10 treatment slightly increased richness and phylogenetic diversity of the total bacterial community while decreasing hppd richness. Overall, the highest dose of TBT seemed to promote TBT-tolerant or TBT-degrading bacterial populations and to deplete TBT-sensitive ones. These effects were transient as TBT was rapidly dissipated with a DT50 of 7 days and 15 days for D1 and D10, respectively. Differential abundance analysis with a Generalized Linear Model allowed the identification of Sphingomonas, Steroidobacter and Lysobacter as genus that were influenced by TBT, and which could be used as a new class of exposure biomarkers.

Effects of field-aging on the impact of biochar on herbicide fate and microbial community structure in the soil environment

Biochar can enhance organic carbon storage and mitigate the adverse effects of pesticides in the soil. However, the mechanisms by which field-aging affects the impacts of biochar on herbicide behavior and the composition of microbial communities in the soil remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the influences of aged and fresh biochar on herbicide behavior and microbial community structure in the soil. Herein, with 14C-labeled technology, aged treatment (soil amended with field-aged biochar), fresh treatment (soil amended with fresh biochar), and control (soil without biochar) were installed to evaluate their treatment capacities. The results showed that the average leaching out and mineralization of simazine in the aged treatment were significantly higher by 4.8% and 1.66% (P < 0.05) compared with the fresh treatment. Relative to the control, the pesticide was significantly adsorbed (P < 0.05) in the aged treatment. The abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) significantly increased by 1.03 and 1.16-fold, whereas fungi increased dramatically by 1.02-fold and decreased by 1.21-fold in the aged and fresh treatments, respectively (P < 0.05). In addition, eukaryotes were effectively reduced by 1.02 and 1.14-fold in these treatments, respectively (P < 0.05). This study suggests that field aging can undermine the impacts of biochar on pesticides and modify the microbial community structure in the soil environment.

Assessing the effects of β-triketone herbicides on HPPD from environmental bacteria using a combination of in silico and microbiological approaches

4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) is the molecular target of β-triketone herbicides in plants. This enzyme, involved in the tyrosine pathway, is also present in a wide range of living organisms, including microorganisms. Previous studies, focusing on a few strains and using high herbicide concentrations, showed that β-triketones are able to inhibit microbial HPPD. Here, we measured the effect of agronomical doses of β-triketone herbicides on soil bacterial strains. The HPPD activity of six bacterial strains was tested with 1× or 10× the recommended field dose of the herbicide sulcotrione. The selected strains were tested with 0.01× to 15× the recommended field dose of sulcotrione, mesotrione, and tembotrione. Molecular docking was also used to measure and model the binding mode of the three herbicides with the different bacterial HPPD. Our results show that responses to herbicides are strain-dependent with Pseudomonas fluorescens F113 HPPD activity not inhibited by any of the herbicide tested, when all three β-triketone herbicides inhibited HPPD in Bacillus cereus ATCC14579 and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. These responses are also molecule-dependent with tembotrione harboring the strongest inhibitory effect. Molecular docking also reveals different binding potentials. This is the first time that the inhibitory effect of β-triketone herbicides is tested on environmental strains at agronomical doses, showing a potential effect of these molecules on the HPPD enzymatic activity of non-target microorganisms. The whole-cell assay developed in this study, coupled with molecular docking analysis, appears as an interesting way to have a first idea of the effect of herbicides on microbial communities, prior to setting up microcosm or even field experiments. This methodology could then largely be applied to other family of pesticides also targeting an enzyme present in microorganisms.

Pesticide soil microbial toxicity: setting the scene for a new pesticide risk assessment for soil microorganisms (IUPAC Technical Report)

Pesticides constitute an integral part of modern agriculture. However, there are still concerns about their effects on non-target organisms. To address this the European Commission has imposed a stringent regulatory scheme for new pesticide compounds. Assessment of the aquatic toxicity of pesticides is based on a range of advanced tests. This does not apply to terrestrial ecosystems, where the toxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms, is based on an outdated and crude test (N mineralization). This regulatory gap is reinforced by the recent methodological and standardization advances in soil microbial ecology. The inclusion of such standardized tools in a revised risk assessment scheme will enable the accurate estimation of the toxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms and on associated ecosystem services. In this review we (i) summarize recent work in the assessment of the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides and point to ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as most relevant bioindicator groups (ii) identify limitations in the experimental approaches used and propose mitigation solutions, (iii) identify scientific gaps and (iv) propose a new risk assessment procedure to assess the effects of pesticides on soil microorganisms.

Pesticide effects on nitrogen cycle related microbial functions and community composition

The extensive application of pesticides in agriculture raises concerns about their potential negative impact on soil microorganisms, being the key drivers of nutrient cycling. Most studies have investigated the effect of a single pesticide on a nutrient cycling in single soil type. We, for the first time, investigated the effect of 20 commercial pesticides with different mode of actions, applied at their recommended dose and five times their recommended dose, on nitrogen (N) microbial cycling in three different agricultural soils from southern Australian. Functional effects were determined by measuring soil enzymatic activities of β-1,4-N-acetyliglucosaminidase (NAG) and l-leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), potential nitrification (PN), and the abundance of functional genes involved in N cycling (amoA and nifH). Effects on nitrifiers diversity were determined with amplicon sequencing. Overall, the pesticides effect on N microbial cycling was dose-independent and soil specific. The fungicides flutriafol and azoxystrobin, the herbicide chlorsulfuron and the insecticide fipronil induced a significant reduction in PN and β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase activity (P < 0.05) (NAG) in the alkaline loam soil with low organic carbon content i.e. a soil with properties which typically favors pesticide bioavailability and therefore potential toxicity. For the nitrifier community, the greatest pesticide effects were on the most dominant Nitrososphaeraceae (ammonia-oxidizing archaea; AOA) whose abundance increased significantly compared to the less dominant AOA and other nitrifiers. The inhibiting effects were more evident in the soil samples treated with fungicides. By testing multiple pesticides in a single study, our findings provide crucial information that can be used for pesticide hazard assessment.

DNA-SIP and repeated isolation corroborate Variovorax as a key organism in maintaining the genetic memory for linuron biodegradation in an agricultural soil

The frequent exposure of agricultural soils to pesticides can lead to microbial adaptation, including the development of dedicated microbial populations that utilize the pesticide compound as a carbon and energy source. Soil from an agricultural field in Halen (Belgium) with a history of linuron exposure has been studied for its linuron-degrading bacterial populations at two time points over the past decade and Variovorax was appointed as a key linuron degrader. Like most studies on pesticide degradation, these studies relied on isolates that were retrieved through bias-prone enrichment procedures and therefore might not represent the in situ active pesticide-degrading populations. In this study, we revisited the Halen field and applied, in addition to enrichment-based isolation, DNA stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP), to identify in situ linuron-degrading bacteria in linuron-exposed soil microcosms. Linuron dissipation was unambiguously linked to Variovorax and its linuron catabolic genes and might involve the synergistic cooperation between two species. Additionally, two novel linuron-mineralizing Variovorax isolates were obtained with high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strains isolated from the same field a decade earlier. The results confirm Variovorax as a prime in situ degrader of linuron in the studied agricultural field soil and corroborate the genus as key for maintaining the genetic memory of linuron degradation functionality in that field.

Assessing the Effects of β-Triketone Herbicides on the Soil Bacterial and hppd Communities: A Lab-to-Field Experiment

Maize cultivators often use β-triketone herbicides to prevent the growth of weeds in their fields. These herbicides target the 4-HPPD enzyme of dicotyledons. This enzyme, encoded by the hppd gene, is widespread among all living organisms including soil bacteria, which are considered as “non-target organisms” by the legislation. Within the framework of the pesticide registration process, the ecotoxicological impact of herbicides on soil microorganisms is solely based on carbon and nitrogen mineralization tests. In this study, we used more extensive approaches to assess with a lab-to-field experiment the risk of β-triketone on the abundance and the diversity of both total and hppd soil bacterial communities. Soil microcosms were exposed, under lab conditions, to 1× or 10× the recommended dose of sulcotrione or its commercial product, Decano^®. Whatever the treatment applied, sulcotrione was fully dissipated from soil after 42 days post-treatment. The abundance and the diversity of both the total and the hppd bacterial communities were not affected by the herbicide treatments all along the experiment. Same measurements were led in real agronomical conditions, on three different fields located in the same area cropped with maize: one not exposed to any plant protection products, another one exposed to a series of plant protection products (PPPs) comprising mesotrione, and a last one exposed to different PPPs including mesotrione and tembotrione, two β-triketones. In this latter, the abundance of the hppd community varied over time. The diversity of the total and the hppd communities evolved over time independently from the treatment received. Only slight but significant transient effects on the abundance of the hppd community in one of the tested soil were observed. Our results showed that tested β-triketones have no visible impact toward both total and hppd soil bacteria communities.

A critical review of different factors governing the fate of pesticides in soil under biochar application

Pesticides are extensively used in the modern agricultural system. The inefficient and extensive use of pesticides during the last 5 to 6 decades inadvertently led to serious deterioration of environmental quality with health risk to living organisms, including humans. It is important to use some environmentally-friendly and sustainable approaches to remediate, restore and maintain soil quality. Biochar has gained considerable attention globally as a promising soil amendment because it has the ability to adsorb and as such minimize the bioavailability of pesticides in soils. This review emphasizes the recent trends and implications of biochar in pesticide-contaminated soils, as well as highlights need of the pesticides use and associated environmental issues in context of the biochar application. The overarching aim of this review is to signify the role of biochar on primary processes such as effect of biochar on the persistence, mineralization, leaching and efficacy of pesticides in soil. Notably, the effects of biochar on pesticide adsorption-desorption, degradation and bioavailability under various operating/production conditions are critically discussed. This review delineates the indirect impact of biochar on pesticides persistence in soils and proposes key recommendations for future research which are essential for the remediation and restoration of pesticides-impacted soils.

Effects of herbicide on non-target microorganisms: Towards a new class of biomarkers?

Conventional agriculture still relies on the general use of agrochemicals (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) to control various pests (weeds, fungal pathogens and insects), to ensure the yield of crop and to feed a constantly growing population. The generalized use of pesticides in agriculture leads to the contamination of soil and other connected environmental resources. The persistence of pesticide residues in soil is identified as a major threat for in-soil living organisms that are supporting an important number of ecosystem services. Although authorities released pesticides on the market only after their careful and thorough evaluation, the risk assessment for in-soil living organisms is unsatisfactory, particularly for microorganisms for which pesticide toxicity is solely considered by one global test measuring N mineralization. Recently, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) underlined the lack of standardized methods to assess pesticide ecotoxicological effects on soil microorganisms. Within this context, there is an obvious need to develop innovative microbial markers sensitive to pesticide exposure. Biomarkers that reveal direct effects of pesticides on microorganisms are often viewed as the panacea. Such biomarkers can only be developed for pesticides having a mode of action inhibiting a specific enzyme not only found in the targeted organisms but also in microorganisms which are considered as "non-target organisms" by current regulations. This review explores possible ways of innovation to develop such biomarkers for herbicides. We scanned the herbicide classification by considering the mode of action, the targeted enzyme and the ecotoxicological effects of each class of active substance in order to identify those that can be tracked using sensitive microbial markers.

Blame It on the Metabolite: 3,5-Dichloroaniline Rather than the Parent Compound Is Responsible for the Decreasing Diversity and Function of Soil Microorganisms

Pesticides are key stressors of soil microorganisms with reciprocal effects on ecosystem functioning. These effects have been mainly attributed to the parent compounds, while the impact of their transformation products (TPs) has been largely overlooked. We assessed in a meadow soil (soil A) the transformation of iprodione and its toxicity in relation to (i) the abundance of functional microbial groups, (ii) the activity of key microbial enzymes, and (iii) the diversity of bacteria, fungi, and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) using amplicon sequencing. 3,5-Dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA), the main iprodione TP, was identified as a key explanatory factor for the persistent reduction in enzymatic activities and potential nitrification (PN) and for the observed structural changes in the bacterial and fungal communities. The abundances of certain bacterial (Actinobacteria, Hyphomicrobiaceae, Ilumatobacter, and Solirubrobacter) and fungal (Pichiaceae) groups were negatively correlated with 3,5-DCA. A subsequent study in a fallow agricultural soil (soil B) showed limited formation of 3,5-DCA, which concurred with the lack of effects on nitrification. Direct 3,5-DCA application in soil B induced a dose-dependent reduction of PN and NO3--N, which recovered with time. In vitro assays with terrestrial AOM verified the greater toxicity of 3,5-DCA over iprodione. "Candidatus Nitrosotalea sinensis" Nd2 was the most sensitive AOM to both compounds. Our findings build on previous evidence on the sensitivity of AOM to pesticides, reinforcing their potential utilization as indicators of the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides in pesticide environmental risk analysis and stressing the need to consider the contribution of TPs in the toxicity of pesticides on the soil microbial community.IMPORTANCE Pesticide toxicity on soil microorganisms is an emerging issue in pesticide risk assessment, dictated by the pivotal role of soil microorganisms in ecosystem services. However, the focus has traditionally been on parent compounds, while transformation products (TPs) are largely overlooked. We tested the hypothesis that TPs can be major contributors to the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides using iprodione and its main TP, 3,5-dichloroaniline, as model compounds. We demonstrated, by measuring functional and structural endpoints, that 3,5-dichloroaniline and not iprodione was associated with adverse effects on soil microorganisms, with nitrification being mostly affected. Pioneering in vitro assays with relevant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea verified the greater toxicity of 3,5-dichloroaniline. Our findings are expected to advance environmental risk assessment, highlighting the potential of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms as indicators of the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides and stressing the need to consider the contribution of TPs to pesticide soil microbial toxicity.

The dissipation and microbial ecotoxicity of tebuconazole and its transformation products in soil under standard laboratory and simulated winter conditions

Tebuconazole (TBZ) is a widely used triazole fungicide at EU level on cereals and vines. It is relatively persistent in soil where it is transformed to various transformation products (TPs) which might be environmentally relevant. We assessed the dissipation of TBZ in soil under contrasting incubation conditions (standard vs winter simulated) that are relevant to its application scheme, determined its transformation pathway using advanced analytical tools and ¹⁴C-labeled TBZ and assessed its soil microbial toxicity. Mineralization of ¹⁴C-triazole-ring-labeled TBZ was negligible but up to 11% of ¹⁴C-penyl-ring-labeled TBZ evolved as ¹⁴CO₂ within 150 days of incubation. TBZ persistence increased at higher dose rates (×10 compared to the recommended agronomical dose ×1) and under winter simulated conditions compared to standard incubation conditions (at ×1 dose rate DT₅₀ of 202 and 88 days, respectively). Non-target suspect screening enabled the detection of 22 TPs of TBZ, among which 17 were unknown. Mass spectrometry analysis led to the identification of 1-(4-chlorophenyl) ethanone, a novel TP of TBZ, the formation of which and decay in soil was determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Three hypothetical transformation pathways of TBZ, all converging to 1H-1,2,4-triazole are proposed based on suspect screening. The ecotoxicological effect of TBZ and of its TPs was assessed by measuring by qPCR the abundance of the total bacteria and the relative abundance of 11 prokaryotic taxa and 4 functional groups. A transient impact of TBZ on the relative abundance of all prokaryotic taxa (except α-proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) and one functional microbial group (pcaH-carrying microorganisms) was observed. However the direction of the effect (positive or negative) varied, and in certain cases, depended on the incubation conditions. Proteobacteria was the most responsive phylum to TBZ with recovery observed 20 days after treatment. The ecotoxicological effects on the soil microorganisms were not correlated with 1-(4-chlorophenyl) ethanone.

The Plant as Metaorganism and Research on Next-Generation Systemic Pesticides - Prospects and Challenges

Systemic pesticides (SPs) are usually recommended for soil treatments and as seed coating agents and are taken up from the soil by involving various plant-mediated processes, physiological, and morphological attributes of the root systems. Microscopic insights and next-generation sequencing combined with bioinformatics allow us now to identify new functions and interactions of plant-associated bacteria and perceive plants as meta-organisms. Host symbiotic, rhizo-epiphytic, endophytic microorganisms and their functions on plants have not been studied yet in accordance with uptake, tanslocation and action of pesticides. Root tips exudates mediated by rhizobacteria could modify the uptake of specific pesticides while bacterial ligands and enzymes can affect metabolism and fate of pesticide within plant. Over expression of specific proteins in cell membrane can also modify pesticide influx in roots. Moreover, proteins and other membrane compartments are usually involved in pesticide modes of action and resistance development. In this article it is discussed what is known of the physiological attributes including apoplastic, symplastic, and trans-membrane transport of SPs in accordance with the intercommunication dictated by plant-microbe, cell to cell and intracellular signaling. Prospects and challenges for uptake, translocation, storage, exudation, metabolism, and action of SPs are given through the prism of new insights of plant microbiome. Interactions of soil applied pesticides with physiological processes, plant root exudates and plant microbiome are summarized to scrutinize challenges for the next-generation pesticides.
