Abstract
Tilapia is a model fish species used as a pollution biomonitor due to its tolerance and availability in many contaminated sites. Blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus specimens (n = 320) were collected in eleven dams influenced by mining in the SE Gulf of California region (dams 1, 2 and, 3 comprise 55 mining sites; dam 4 comprises 8; dams 6, 8, 10, and 11, ≤ 6; and dams 5, 7, and 9 include 19, 20, and 16 mining sites, respectively). Cadmium, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations were analyzed in the muscle, liver, gills, and guts to identify metal pollution and evaluate risks and seasonal changes. The distinct tissues exhibited different metal accumulation capacities, therefore allowed develop a diagnosis comparative between the eleven dams. In general, metal concentrations were higher in dams 1, 2, 5, and 9, which are associated with more mining sites in their sub-basins. The four metals exhibited the highest levels in the tilapia liver in dams 1 and 2, which can be related to the present and past mining activity in the lower watershed (55 sites) and the geothermal activity in these dams. In general, Zn exhibited the highest level in the tilapia livers from dams 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 compared to the maximum mean (220 µg/g) concentrations previously recorded. The non-carcinogenic risks indicated that the Pb risk was enhanced when the intake was ≥ 231.5 g week-1 of tilapia muscle, indicating a potential risk of adverse health effects for the entire population.

Abstract
This study aimed to establish the distribution of As, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the main tissues (muscle, liver, gonads, and gills) of the Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) from the northern Gulf of California to establish baseline bioavailability levels in the northern stock. The results for Pb and Cd were the lowest in the studied tissues (Pb < 0.005 mg kg-1 in the liver and gonads and 1.43 mg kg-1 for Cd in the liver), followed by levels of Cu and As (muscle > liver > gonads > gills) and Zn with the most abundant levels in all the tissues. The sex of the organisms was not a factor that influenced the bioaccumulation and distribution of the potential toxic elements (PTEs) nor total length, except for As in gills and Cd in muscle and the liver. Important interactions among Zn and non-essential elements were established. The Pacific hake intake of PTEs was probably through the diet via bioaccumulation of the elements in their prey and less by pollution of the water column. In the muscle, a major distribution and storage of As, Zn, and Pb were observed, but in the liver, higher loads were from Cd and Cu. The maximum tolerable weekly intake must be very high to be at health risk for the essential elements and Cd. However, the population might be at risk for Pb and As consumption if more than 124 g of M. productus in adults and 35 g in children are consumed per week. Further investigations are required to understand the dynamics of PTEs in M. productus as it could be proposed as a biomonitor species.

Abstract
In this study selected marine species from north Persian Gulf ecosystems were collected to investigate the concentration of 15 trace elements (Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, V, Zn and Hg) in muscle and liver tissues for the purpose of evaluating potential health risks for human consumers. The results indicated that Fe, Zn, Sr, Cu and As are the most abundant TEs in the tissues of the species. The concentration of Cu in P. semisulcatus and As in most investigated species pose the highest risk of exposure. The carcinogenic risk values indicate that As and Ni concentrations in the species are above the acceptable lifetime risk for adults and children in most of the species. The margin of exposure risk approach indicated that the risk of detrimental effects due to dietary Pb intake for age groups is low, except for consumers of T. tonggol.

Abstract
The Galapagos Islands are one of the best-preserved archipelagos in the world. We sampled individuals of six demersal and three pelagic species. The metal concentration of liver and gonad tissues were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Spectrometry. Findings suggest none of the pelagic species showed metallic concentrations that could pose a risk to their health or reproductive capacity. S. violacea and P. clemensi Zn levels were higher in liver than in gonads, indicating that these species could be in their reproduction period. Zn risk toxicity for the study species is negligible. High concentrations of Cd were found in the liver of C. princeps, C. affinis and P. albomaculatus which could cause morphological and physiological alterations. We hypothesize that the high metal concentrations found in the demersal species could come from the volcanism of the islands, since no major sources of anthropogenic metal contamination can be found in the archipelago.

Abstract
Distribution of arsenic (As) in tissues and gonads of the Indo-Pacific sailfish Istiophorus platypterus and the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus from the SE Gulf of California was evaluated. The bioaccumulation patterns of As were the same in the two species. In I. platypterus, As levels (mg kg-1, wet weight) were gonads (7.4 ± 1.1) > liver (3.1 ± 0.1) > kidney (2.7 ± 0.1) > muscle (1.6 ± 0.1); in C. hippurus, As (mg kg-1) levels were gonads (4.3 ± 0.6) > liver (3.2 ± 0.2) > kidney (2.3 ± 0.1) > muscle (1.2 ± 0.1). Differences in As distribution could be attributed to the biological functions of tissues. The hypothesis was confirmed that biomagnification was evidenced by the fact that As levels were lower in prey species than in predators. Intake of muscle from either fish did not represent a risk to humans if recommended portions a week are not exceeded, adults as much as 1802.4 g and 2454.1 g and children 257.5 and 350.6 g, for sailfish and dolphinfish, respectively. In addition, the likelihood of developing cancer due to consumption of edible tissues from either of these top predators was in the acceptable range (6.4 × 10-5 to 27.3 × 10-6 for a population that consumes 50 g of muscle in a week) but if a conservative combined slope factor is used the probabilities to develop bladder and lung cancer increments from 1.1 × 10-3 to 9.1 × 10-5.

Abstract
The Gulf of California represents an important hotspot for whale shark (Rhincodon typus) aggregation. Anthropogenic activities and natural sources could expose sharks to high levels of trace elements (TEs). To determinate these levels in this endangered species, concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn (in ng/g ww) were measured in 130 whale shark skin biopsies and 44 zooplankton samples collected from two areas of the Gulf of California, Bahía de Los Angeles (BLA) and Bahía de La Paz (LAP) during 2016-2018. For biopsies, Zn exhibited highest concentrations in BLA (2016-2017, 298 ± 406; 2017-2018, 1959 ± 2545) and at LAP (in 2016-2017, 595 ± 554; in 2017-2018, 2642 ± 1261). On the other hand, Cd (BLA 2016-2017, 3 ± 3; LAP 2016-2017, 4 ± 3; BLA 2017-2018, 17 ± 14; LAP 2017-2018, 13 ± 10) and Pb (BLA 2016-2017, 7 ± 7; LAP 2016-2017, 15 ± 32; BLA 2017-2018, 69 ± 76; LAP 2017-2018, 7 ± 5) showed lowest concentrations. Significant differences in TE concentrations between sites and periods occurred. Arsenic found in shark biopsies from La Paz suggested enrichment and/or increased bioavailability in this area. Sex alone was not a significant factor in TE concentration; nevertheless, a sex-dependent difference in correlation of TE concentration and size was noted (negative in males, positive in females). This indicates feeding strategies of whale shark may be sex and size segregated. During 2017-2018, zooplankton and sharks showed enrichment in all TEs. Essential elements were not biomagnified by sharks. Lead was biomagnified through zooplankton. Strong positive correlation between selected elements indicates that Zn, Cd and Pb follow the same metabolic route in the sharks' body.

Cadmium, Lead, Copper, Zinc, and Iron Concentration Patterns in Three Marine Fish Species from Two Different Mining Sites inside the Gulf of California, Mexico. Abstract
In the Gulf of California; mineral deposits have contributed to high metal contents in coastal environments. This study examined cadmium; lead; copper; zinc; and iron contents in three fish species; Kyphosus vaigiensis (herbivore), Stegastes rectifraenum (omnivore), and Balistes polylepis (carnivore) at two mining sites. Metal concentrations were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes were estimated using mass spectrophotometry. Also, we assessed the risk to human health from the consumption of these three species based on permissible limits; although only two of them (Kyphosus and Balistes) are consumed as food. Metal concentrations differed among fish species; except for iron. The highest concentrations of metals were not always recorded in the species at the highest trophic level; i.e., Balistes. The highest concentrations (dry weight) recorded were cadmium (0.21 ± 0.03 µg g-1) and lead (1.67 ± 0.26 µg g-1), in S. rectifraenum; copper (1.60 ± 0.49 µg g-1) and zinc (67.30 ± 8.79 µg g-1), in B. polylepis; and iron (27.06 ± 2.58 µg g-1), in K. vaigiensis. Our findings show that each element accumulates differently in particular marine organisms; depending on the physiology of the species and the biogeochemistry of its habitat; which in turn is affected by the anthropogenic activities in adjacent areas. No risk of heavy metals toxicity is expected from the human consumption of the species and sites studied.

Abstract
Due to growing commercial interest as a fishing resource and its intermediate position in the marine trophic chains as both prey and predator, cephalopods can play an important role in mercury (Hg) transfer along the marine food webs, since they can bioaccumulate this metal in its tissues. Our study aims to analyze Hg accumulation in Loligo forbesi caught in the Azores Archipelago (Portugal) quantifying Hg in different tissues (mantle and stomach), as well in the squid stomach content, in order to evaluate the efficiency of Hg transfer from prey to predator. Hg data from the tissues was used to estimate the weekly tolerable Hg intake due to squid consumption. Overall data indicate that Hg measured in the stomach tissue (0.1 ± 0.01 μg g-1) was significantly higher than Hg levels found in the mantle (0.04 ± 0.001 μg g-1) and stomach contents (0.01 ± 0.001 μg g-1). BMF (bioaccumulation factor) was >1 for all the samples, indicating a biomagnification process from prey to predator. Hg concentration in the mantle tissue was correlated with mantle size; although females present higher Hg levels than males, the difference was found to be not related to gender but rather to the fact that females had larger bodies. Finally, considering the Hg concentration found in the mantle and the permitted Hg levels, it is advisable to consume up to 1050-1890g of squid per week, according to the regulatory agencies. Thus, our results indicate that, since these doses are respected, consumption of squids from the Azorean waters do not pose a risk to humans.

Abstract
With the aim of assessing health risk to shark consumers, cadmium, mercury, and selenium were measured in muscle of Sphyrna lewini from four coastal states (Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, and Colima) in western Mexico. According to length of specimens, three age modes were found: juveniles and neonates (the majority of the individuals), preadults and adults. Average concentrations (μg g-1 dry weight) in all the studied individuals followed the order cadmium (0.06), selenium (0.94), and mercury (1.56). The mean concentrations of cadmium and mercury increased significantly (p < 0.001) with mean length of specimens. Overall, hazard quotient and hazard index values were below one so there is no health risk to consumers. According to molar ratios of Hg and Se in the edible portion (muscle) of sharks, and depending on the areas of collection, individuals from Baja California Sur might not be beneficial to consumers.

Abstract
We determined levels of mercury, cadmium, lead and selenium in muscle and liver of 29 specimens of a large pelagic fish rarely investigated, the Mediterranean spearfish Tetrapturus belone (Raf., 1810). The following element concentration ranking (mean ± S.D.; espressed in mg/kg dry weight) was recorded in muscle: Hg (3.401 ± 1.908) > Se (1.727 ± 0.232) > Pb (0.532 ± 0.322) > Cd (0.019 ± 0.015), and Se (6.577 ± 1.789) > Cd (5.815 ± 3.038) > Hg (2.698 ± 2.214) > Pb (0.661 ± 1.334) in liver. Levels of Hg, Se and Cd were compared to those reported for other Istiophoridae from oceanic areas and for other large predators of Mediterranean Sea, like swordfish and tuna. Organotropism of trace elements and their relation to size was discussed. Ecophysiological considerations regarding the Se-Hg relationship as well as Se-Cd indicate a possible detoxification mechanism. The implications for human consumption are briefly discussed.

Abstract
We studied the biomagnification of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) with carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotope analyses during four seasons, in the food web of a semiarid coastal lagoon in the central-eastern Gulf of California (GC). The concentrations of the four metals increased among functional organism groups, from the food web base to the highest trophic levels. In general, the distribution of the elements for the four sampled seasons was Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The correlations between trophic level values and log-transformed metal concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) positive for Cd (r = 0.61-0.91), Cu (r = 0.63-0.70), and Zn (r = 0.50-0.73), while Pb showed only one positive correlation (r = 0.38). The biomagnification factors (from specific predator-prey scenarios) ranged from 0.32 to 3.88 for Cd, 0.05 to 37.1 for Cu, 0.50 to 3.57 for Pb, and 0.70 to 22.2 for Zn. The trophic biomagnification factors (considering the entire food web) varied from 1.26 to 1.41 for Cd, 1.95 to 2.24 for Cu, 1.02 to 1.15 for Pb, and 1.45 to 1.78 for Zn. Our results show evidence for the biomagnification of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the studied food web, while data on Pb transference are not conclusive.

Abstract
Historically, the Brazilian coast has been impacted by urban, industrial, and port activities that have increased the input of chemical contaminants, such as heavy metals, to the ecosystem. The Paranaguá estuarine complex (PEC), Cananéia-Iguape estuarine-lagoon complex (CIELC), and Santos-São Vicente estuarine complex (SSVEC) (S-SE Brazil) are surrounded by urbanized cities and port areas characterized by various anthropogenic discharges comprising several potential pollutants, including heavy metals. Concerns about such contamination are paramount because these estuaries are important for traditional fishing communities and are categorized as World Heritage sites and biodiversity hotspots by UNESCO. In this study, metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg) and metalloids (As and Se) known to affect the health of marine life were evaluated in regional fishes. Muscle and liver tissues from three demersal teleosts (Stellifer rastrifer, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, and Isopisthus parvipinnis) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), with a coupled vapor generated accessory (VGA). Irrespective of species, metal bioconcentration was significantly greater in fishes from the PEC and CIELC, which had higher As, Cu, and Zn concentrations, while Se levels were higher in fish from the PEC and SSVEC estuaries. Seasonality, fish species and maturation stage affected the accumulation of metals. Some metal levels, including As, Cr, Pb, and Se in all species across all estuaries, and Zn in the PEC, exceeded the maximum permitted level for seafood and might present a risk for daily human consumption. The results provide reference points for existing chemical contamination and should be used to guide monitoring programs and the sustainable development of these coastal regions, within a broader objective of maintaining public health.

Abstract
Knowledge of the metals behaviour in the Antarctic environment is important for conserving this continent, which can be impacted by local activities, such as research stations and by atmospheric and oceanic transport over long distances. As, Cd Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn levels and the nitrogen isotope ratio were investigated using benthic samples from Martel Inlet, Admiralty Bay. The results showed the biodilution of As and a tendency of increasing concentrations of Cd and Cu along the trophic web. Biomagnification was verified only for Zn, and this was attributed to its essentiality to the biota, and to the acting of metallothioneins proteins that participate in homeostasis, store and detoxify metals. These results can be used as baseline levels for the biota in the Antarctic region and assist the monitoring and management work developed by the Brazilian INCT-APA (National Institute of Science and Technology for Environmental Research Antarctic).

Abstract
Fish and shellfish belonging to five different species among pelagic, benthonic and molluscs, were collected from the Gulf of Catania in 2017 to evaluate arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se) vanadium (V) and zinc (Zn). Risk of developing chronic systemic effects derived from seafood consumption was evaluated with the Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and compared with the results obtained from the same area and the species, collected in 2012. Hg, Cd and Pb concentrations were found below the limits set by European Community for human consumption in all the analysed species. The total risk is reduced from 1.1 to 0.49, and this result is strongly associated with the lower bioaccumulations levels found for Hg, Mn, Se and V. Others metals such as As, Pb, Ni and Zn bioaccumulation levels remain approximately the same, conversely, it is revealed a slight increase of Cd and Cr. Overall, the present study show a positive picture of the studied area, the Gulf of Catania, highlighting not only a decreased metal availability of the study area, but, above all, a decreased risk to develop chronic systemic effects derived from consumption of local seafood.

Abstract
We determined the levels of Cd and Pb in liver and muscle of demersal fish from three lagoon systems (Urías, Huizache, and Teacapán) in the SE Gulf of California with the purpose of comparing the studied metals in fish from the three ecosystems and to assess the potential human health risk. Considering the number of individuals, the sequence of fish abundance was Teacapán > Huizache > Urías. Length and size at maturity of collected species showed that 76.5% of the individuals were juveniles. Overall, Cd and Pb were more accumulated in liver than in muscle. After multivariate analyses, considering fish tissue and locality, Cd and Pb levels were different (p < 0.05) between fish from Teacapán and Huizache. In general, the hazard quotients (HQs) of Pb were higher than the corresponding values of Cd; the highest HQ for Cd (0.0051) corresponded to Mugil curema, and the highest HQ for Pb (0.0099) was estimated in Diapterus peruvianus. With respect to the hazard index (accumulative risk from Cd and Pb), the most elevated value (HI = 0.0124) was estimated for Pomadasys macracanthus. Estimated HI does not represent a health risk at the consumption rates of the Mexican population.
