Determination of carbamazepine and 12 degradation products in various compartments of an outdoor aquatic mesocosm by reliable analytical methods based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Piezoelectric-channels in MoS2-embedded polyvinylidene fluoride membrane to activate peroxymonosulfate in membrane filtration for wastewater reuse

The conjugation of membrane filtration (MF) with advanced oxidation process (AOPs) is being considered as an alternative advanced treatment process for the potable reuse of wastewater. Beyond conventional MF/AOPs conjugation, a new downstream MF process with piezoelectric-channels induced piezo-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is herein constructed to deal with antiepileptic carbamazepine (CBZ) pollutants through polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane (PVDF-M10). Through a MF process, ca. 93.8% CBZ pollutants can be removed under an ultrasonic-assisted piezo-activation PMS, whereas only 18.3% and 60.2% CBZ can be removed by using pure PVDF membrane under the same condition and PVDF-M10 membrane without ultrasonic-assisted piezo-activation. Even after 9-cycles, CBZ removal efficiency was maintained at 56.4% under this MF process. These superior performances are attributed to the piezoelectric exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets (E-MoS2) embedded PVDF nanofibers in PVDF-M10 membrane, which lead to rich piezoelectric-channels in the membrane. These piezoelectric-channels not only produced more charges to activate PMS to boost the yield of reactive oxide species (ROS) but also provided an ideal platform for the rapid reaction between CBZ and ROS during MF process. This investigation develops a new MF technique to conjugate piezo-activation of PMS-AOPs for the efficient removal of emerging pollutants for the potable reuse of wastewater.

Bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals in benthic marine organisms (Holothuria tubulosa, Anemonia sulcata and Actinia equina) exposed to environmental contamination by atenolol and carbamazepine

The present work assess the bioconcentration kinetics of atenolol (ATN) and carbamazepine (CBZ) in common marine organisms including Holothuria tubulosa, Anemonia sulcata and Actinia equina under controlled laboratory conditions. CBZ exhibited higher uptake and excretion rates resulting higher bioconcentration factor (BCF) (41-537L/kg for CBZ vs 7-50L/kg for ATN) although both are below the limits established by the European Union (EU). The measured BCF using kinetic data showed some differences with those predicted using the concentrations measured at the steady-state, probably explained because the steady state was not ready reached. The animal-specific BCF followed the order of Holothuria tubulosa >Actinia equina >Anemonia sulcata for ATN while was the opposite for CBZ. The study highlighted between-tissues differences in the digestive tract and the body wall of the Holothuria tubulosa. The work presented is the first to model bioconcentration of ATN and CBZ in holothurian and anemone animal models.

Characterization of childhood exposure to environmental contaminants using stool in a semi-urban middle-class cohort from eastern Canada

Children are exposed to various environmental organic and inorganic contaminants with effects on health outcomes still largely unknown. Many matrices (e.g., blood, urine, nail, hair) have been used to characterize exposure to organic and inorganic contaminants. The sampling of feces presents several advantages; it is non-invasive and provides a direct evaluation of the gut microbiome exposure to contaminants. The gut microbiome is a key factor in neurological development through the brain-gut axis. Its composition and disturbances can affect the neurodevelopment of children. Characterization of children exposure to contaminants is often performed on vulnerable populations (e.g., from developing countries, low-income neighborhoods, and large urban centers). Data on the exposure of children from middle-class, semi-urban, and mid-size populations to contaminants is scarce despite representing a significant fraction of the population in North America. In this study, 73 organics compounds from different chemical classes and 22 elements were analyzed in 6 years old (n = 84) and 10 years old (n = 119) children's feces from a middle-class, semi-urban, mid-size population cohort from Eastern Canada. Results show that 67 out of 73 targeted organics compounds and all elements were at least detected in one child's feces. Only caffeine (97% & 80%) and acetaminophen (28% & 48%) were detected in more than 25% of the children's feces, whereas all elements besides titanium were detected in more than 50% of the children.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction as an easy-to-perform analytical methodology for monitoring ibuprofen and its main metabolites in mussels

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been reported to be the main pharmaceutical class accumulated in seafood. Among them, ibuprofen (IBU) is of special concern as it is used worldwide to treat common pain, does not require a medical prescription, it is often taken in a high daily dose, and has been reported to cause potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. IBU is highly transformed into hydroxy- and carboxy-metabolites and/or degradation products generated not only after its administration but also during wastewater treatment or in the environment. These compounds can be present in the environment at higher concentrations than IBU and present higher toxicity. In this work, a low-cost and affordable routine analytical method was developed and validated for the first-time determination of IBU and its main metabolites in mussels. The method is based on ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), clean-up by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) and analytical determination by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Box-Behnken experimental design was used for method optimisation to better evaluate the influence and interactions of UAE and d-SPE variables. Extraction recoveries were in the range from 81 to 115%. Precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was lower than 7%. Method detection limits were in the range from 0.1 to 1.9 ng g⁻¹ dry weight. The method was successfully applied to wild mussels.

Metabolic, cellular and defense responses to single and co-exposure to carbamazepine and methylmercury in Dreissena polymorpha

Carbamazepine (CBZ) and Hg are widespread and persistent micropollutants in aquatic environments. Both pollutants are known to trigger similar toxicity mechanisms, e.g. reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Here, their effects were assessed in the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha, frequently used as a freshwater model in ecotoxicology and biomonitoring. Single and co-exposures to CBZ (3.9 μg L^-1) and MeHg (280 ng L^-1) were performed for 1 and 7 days. Metabolomics analyses evidenced that the co-exposure was the most disturbing after 7 days, reducing the amount of 25 metabolites involved in protein synthesis, energy metabolism, antioxidant response and osmoregulation, and significantly altering cells and organelles' structure supporting a reduction of functions of gills and digestive glands. CBZ alone after 7 days decreased the amount of α-aminobutyric acid and had a moderate effect on the structure of mitochondria in digestive glands. MeHg alone had no effect on mussels' metabolome, but caused a significant alteration of cells and organelles' structure in gills and digestive glands. Single exposures and the co-exposure increased antioxidant responses vs control in gills and digestive glands, without resulting in lipid peroxidation, suggesting an increased ROS production caused by both pollutants. Data globally supported that a higher number of hyperactive cells compensated cellular alterations in the digestive gland of mussels exposed to CBZ or MeHg alone, while CBZ + MeHg co-exposure overwhelmed this compensation after 7 days. Those effects were unpredictable based on cellular responses to CBZ and MeHg alone, highlighting the need to consider molecular toxicity pathways for a better anticipation of effects of pollutants in biota in complex environmental conditions.

Transformation products of pharmaceuticals in the environment: Their fate, (eco)toxicity and bioaccumulation potential

Nowadays, a huge scientific attention is being paid to the chemicals of emerging concern, which may pose a significant risk to the human and whole ecosystems. Among them, residues of pharmaceuticals are a widely investigated group of chemicals. In recent years it has been repeatedly demonstrated that pharmaceuticals are present in the environment and that some of them can be toxic to organisms as well as accumulate in their tissues. However, even though the knowledge of the presence, fate and possible threats posed by the parent forms of pharmaceuticals is quite extensive, their transformation products (TPs) have been disregarded for long time. Since last few years, this aspect has gained more scientific attention and recently published papers proved their common presence in the environment. Also the interest in terms of their toxicity, bioconcentration and stability in the environment has increased. Therefore, the aim of our paper was to revise and assess the current state of knowledge on the fate and effects resulting from the presence of the pharmaceuticals' transformation drugs in the environment. This review discusses the metabolites of compounds belonging to six major pharmaceutical groups: SSRIs, anticancer drugs, antibiotics, antihistamines, NSAIDs and opioids, additionally discussing other individual compounds for which literature data exist. The data presented in this paper prove that some TPs may be as harmful as their native forms, however for many groups of drugs this data is still insufficient to assess the risk posed by their presence in the environment.

Role of polymers in the physical and chemical stability of amorphous solid dispersion: A case study of carbamazepine

Incorporating the amorphous drug in polymeric components has been demonstrated as a feasible approach to enhance the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of polymers in the stability of amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) by evaluating the drug-polymer interaction, microenvironmental pH, and stability of ASD. Carbamazepine (CBZ), a Biopharmaceutics Classification System Class II compound, was utilized as a model drug. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate) (PVPVA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMCAS) were selected as model polymers. CBZ ASDs were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and dissolution studies. Molecular modeling was conducted to understand the strength of interaction between CBZ and each polymer. FTIR spectroscopy and molecular modeling results show that the interaction between CBZ and PAA is the strongest among all the ASDs, as PAA is an acidic polymer with the potential to form strong hydrogen bonding with CBZ. Besides, hydrophobic interaction is detected between CBZ and HPMCAS. CBZ-PAA and CBZ-HPMCAS ASDs reveal better physical stability than CBZ-PVP and CBZ-PVPVA ASDs under 40 °C/75% RH for 8 weeks. However, CBZ-PAA ASD shows chemical degradation after stability testing due to its acidic microenvironmental pH. This paper shows that strong intermolecular interactions between CBZ and polymers contribute to the physical stability of the ASDs. Additionally, acidic polymers yield an acidic microenvironment pH of the ASDs that causes chemical degradation during storage. Hence, a balance between the ability of a given polymer to promote physical stability and chemical stability may need to be considered.

Determination of Pharmaceuticals, Heavy Metals, and Oxysterols in Fish Muscle

The present study aimed to assess the levels of 98 multi-class pharmaceuticals including cardiovascular drugs, antidepressants, hypnotics, antibiotics, and sulfonamides occurring in the muscle tissue of fish caught in the Baltic Sea. The following fish species were collected: perch (Perca fluviatilis); flounder (Platichthys flesus); turbot (Scophthalmus maximus); plaice (Pleuronectes platessa); cod (Gadus morhua callarias); bream (Abramis brama); crucian (Carassius carassius). Additionally, in the examined fish muscle the levels of heavy metals and trace elements were determined (As; Ag; Au; Ba; Cd; Co; Cr; Cu; Hg; Li; Mo; Ni; Pb; Sb; Se; Sn; Tl; V) as well as the levels of cholesterol and its 5 derivatives (7-ketocholesterol; 7α-hydroxycholesterol; 7β-hydroxycholesterol; 5β,6β-epoxy-cholesterol; 5α,6α-epoxycholesterol). In the performed studies 11 out of 98 examined pharmaceuticals were detected in fish muscle. The levels of pharmaceuticals in fish muscle varied depending on the species. In the tissues of bream and crucian, no pharmaceuticals were found. Mercury, lead and arsenic were detected in the muscles of all examined fish. Based on the hazard factor for Hg, Pb, Cd, Ni (target hazard quotient, THQ < 1), it was found that the consumption of the studied fish does not constitute a health risk. However, the THQ for As remained >1 indicated possible risk from those metals. In the examined fish muscle the total cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) level of oxysterols were, respectively: 6.90 (cod) μg/g-4.18 μg/g (perch), which corresponded to 0.7-1.5% of cholesterol. The main COPs evaluated were 7-ketocholesterol (0.78 ± 0.14-1.79 ± 0.06 μg/g), 7β-hydroxycholesterol (0.50 ± 0.04-3.20 ± 2.95 μg/g) and 5β,6β-epoxycholesterol (0.66 ± 0.03-1.53 ± 0.66 μg/g). The assessment of health hazards due to contaminations is necessary, which may help to introduce national legislation and global standards aimed at reducing or even eliminating the exposure to contaminants.

UV-Fenton degradation of diclofenac, sulpiride, sulfamethoxazole and sulfisomidine: Degradation mechanisms, transformation products, toxicity evolution and effect of real water matrix

Four common refractory pharmaceuticals, diclofenac (DF), sulpiride (SP), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfisomidine (SIM) were detected in the Disc Tubular Reverse Osmosis (DTRO) concentrates with higher concentrations ranging from 0.85 to 11.57 μg/L from the local landfill. The effect of complex matrix of DTRO concentrates on the UV-Fenton degradation kinetics of DF, SP, SMX and SIM and their transformation products (TPs) were studied. All the four pharmaceuticals could be degraded more efficiently in the ultrapure water than that in the DTRO-concentrate matrix, which also had a significant negative effect on the kinetic constants of the degradation. Twenty-two out of forty-nine TPs were newly identified by HPLC-QTOF-MS and their peak-area evolution was presented. The main degradation pathways for four pharmaceuticals were identified. When assessing cytotoxicity by using HepG2 cells, there appeared to be an obvious toxicity-increase region for each of SP, SMX and SIM. Eleven TPs were identified as the potential toxicity-increase causing TPs by combination of the QSAR prediction, HepG2 cytotoxicity assessment and peak-area evolution of TPs. Therefore, UV-Fenton process was a promising method for the refractory pharmaceutical degradation even in the complex water matrix and choosing appropriate reaction parameters for the UV-Fenton could eliminate the cytotoxicity of the TPs.

Effects of chronic exposure to a pharmaceutical mixture on the three-spined stickleback (gasterosteus aculeatus) population dynamics in lotic mesocosms

Pharmaceutical substances are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and their concentration levels typically range from ng/L up to several μg/L. Furthermore, as those compounds are designed to be highly biologically active, assessing their impacts on non-target organisms is important. Here, we conducted a mesocosm experiment testing a mixture of five pharmaceuticals (diclofenac, carbamazepine, irbesartan, acetaminophen and naproxen) on fish, three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). The mixture concentration levels were chosen on the basis of the contamination of the Meuse river in Belgium which had been measured previously during a monitoring campaign undertaken in 2015 and 2016. Three nominal mixture concentration levels were tested: the lowest concentration level mixture was composed by environmentally-relevant concentrations that approximate average realistic values for each pharmaceuticals (Mx1); the two other levels were 10 and 100 times these concentrations. Although no impact on stickleback prey was observed, the mixture significantly impaired the survival of female fish introduced in the mesocosms at the highest treatment level without causing other major differences on fish population structure. Impacts on condition factors of adults and juveniles were also observed at both individual and population levels. Using a modelling approach with an individual-based model coupled to a bioenergetic model (DEB-IBM), we concluded that chronic exposure to environmentally-relevant concentrations of five pharmaceuticals often detected in the rivers did not appear to strongly affect the three-spined stickleback populations. Mechanisms of population regulation may have counteracted the mixture impacts in the mesocosms.

Potential use of floating treatment wetlands established with Canna flaccida for removing organic contaminants from surface water

Surface water bodies worldwide may be contaminated with various organic contaminants. In many cases, the actual toxicity thresholds to nontarget organisms are unknown, thus presenting unknown risks. This study evaluated the potential use of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) planted with Canna flaccida (common name: Canna) for removing two pharmaceuticals (acetaminophen and carbamazepine) and one herbicide (atrazine) from contaminated water. Triplicate FTWs with varying plant densities were established in 378 L mesocosms. After dosing the mesocosms with the contaminants, water samples were collected over a 12-week period for analysis. The planted FTWs showed differing abilities for removing acetaminophen, atrazine, and carbamazepine. Plant densities on the FTWs did not affect dissipation of acetaminophen or atrazine, but did carbamazepine. All acetaminophen residues were removed from the water within 2 weeks, while all atrazine residues were removed within 12 weeks. Approximately, 79-92% of these residues removed were associated with the FTWs. In contrast, all of the carbamazepine was not removed after 12 weeks, at which time only 29-36.7% of the total removed was associated with the FTWs. Overall results suggest that FTWs established with C. flaccida are promising for removing trace concentrations of acetaminophen, atrazine, and carbamazepine from surface water.

Identification of emerging contaminants and their transformation products in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)-based drinking water treatment plant around River Yamuna in India

The prevalence of emerging contaminants of concern in water regimes is very common these days. High anthropogenic intervention is leading to occurrence of various types of microcontaminants of concern in drinking water systems. Their removal using conventional form of treatment systems employed in water treatment plants is not widely researched upon. Their fate in the conventional as well as advanced water treatment system needs to be focused upon for efficient and safe water disposal. Some compounds may leave the system unchanged or some might transform into much more toxic byproduct. Moreover, understanding level of occurrence of these emerging contaminants in source water bodies is also quintessential for assessing their fate in treatment plant itself as well as in the final treated water. Here in this study, the occurrence and removal of various classes of emerging contaminants were investigated in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)-based advanced drinking water treatment plant (ADWTP) alongside one conventional drinking water treatment plant, both of which use River Yamuna as the source of water. Non-target analysis utilizing high-performance liquid chromatography combined with time of flight (HPLC-QToF) identified more than 300 compounds. Pharmaceuticals accounted for a major fraction (58%) of the identified compounds, followed by plasticizers and insecticides. Nine parent compound and their transformation products were additionally identified using solid-phase extraction followed by analysis using gas chromatography mass spectrometry and HPLC-QToF. The degradation pathway of the parent compounds in MBBR-based ADWTP was also analyzed in depth. The efficiency of each unit process of MBBR-based drinking water treatment plant was studied in terms of removal of few emerging contaminants. Pharmaceutical compound like diclofenac supposedly was persistent, even, toward the end of the treatment train. Semi-quantitative analysis revealed ineffective removal of pyridine, hydrochlorothiazide, and diethyl phthalate in the outlet of ADWTP. ADWTP was able to remove a few emerging contaminants, but a few were recalcitrant. Likewise, it was established that although some parent compounds were degraded, much more toxic transformation products were formed and were prevalent at the end of the treatment.

Construction of carbon-doped supramolecule-based g-C3N4/TiO2 composites for removal of diclofenac and carbamazepine: A comparative study of operating parameters, mechanisms, degradation pathways

An eco-friendly 2D heterojunction photocatalyst composites (BCCNT) consisting of carbon-doped supramolecule-based g-C₃N₄ (BCCN) layers and TiO₂ nanoparticles has been fabricated via an in-situ method. Based on the SEM and XPS results affirmed that the coaction of doped carbon and supramolecule precursors lead to the different morphology of pure g-C₃N₄, C-doped g-C₃N₄ have improved the photodegradation diclofenac (DCF) and carbamazepine (CBZ). And the degradation efficiencies of DCF and CBZ could reach 98.92% and 99.77%, which were separately corresponded to 30 min (min) and 6 h (h) of LED lamp illumination. Additionally, the effects of catalysis dosage, solution pH, natural organic matter (NOM), inorganic anions (Cl^-, SO₄^2-, NO₃^-) and different water matrices were deeply investigated. The scavenger experiments demonstrated that •O₂^-, h⁺ were main active species under visible irradiation. Furthermore, the photodegradation pathways of DCF and CBZ were detected by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) instruments and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra (3D EEMs). Eventually, the possible photocatalytic mechanisms of BCCNT were proposed.

Carbamazepine is degraded by the bacterial strain Labrys portucalensis F11

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment is a topic of concern. Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widespread antiepileptic drug and due to its physical-chemical characteristics minimal removal is achieved in conventional water treatments, and thus has been suggested as a molecular marker of wastewater contamination in surface water and groundwater. The present study reports the biotransformation of CBZ by the bacterial strain Labrys portucalensis F11. When supplied as a sole carbon source, a 95.4% biotransformation of 42.69 μM CBZ was achieved in 30 days. In co-metabolism with acetate, complete biotransformation was attained at a faster rate. Following a target approach, the detection and identification of 14 intermediary metabolites was achieved through UPLC-QTOF/MS/MS. Biotransformation of CBZ by the bacterial strain is mostly based on oxidation, loss of -CHNO group and ketone formation reactions; a biotransformation pathway with two routes is proposed. The toxicity of untreated and treated CBZ solutions was assessed using Vibrio Fischeri and Lepidium sativum acute toxicity tests and Toxi-Chromo Test. The presence of CBZ and/or its degradations products in solution resulted in moderate toxic effect on Vibrio Fischeri, whereas the other organisms were not affected. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report that proposes the metabolic degradation pathway of CBZ by a single bacterial strain.

Photocatalytic Treatment of Pharmaceuticals in Real Hospital Wastewaters for Effluent Quality Amelioration

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the wastewater effluents has confirmed that conventional wastewater treatment technologies are not sufficiently effective in the pharmaceuticals’ removal. The objective of the present study was to evaluate and compare the photocatalytic degradation of PhACs using TiO2-P25, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) and a heterojunction of perovskite strodium titanate and graphitic carbon nitride SrTiO3/g-C3N4 (20% g-C3N4, 20CNSTO) photocatalytic materials, in hospital wastewater effluents, by simulated solar irradiation. The experiments were performed by using real wastewater samples collected from the university hospital wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent of Ioannina city (Northwestern Greece) and inherent pharmaceutical concentration levels. The analysis of the samples was accomplished by solid phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. In the cases of TiO2 and CN, more than 70% of the initial concentration (e.g., venlafaxine) was degraded after 90 min, while 20CNSTO presented lower photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, some compounds were sporadically detected (e.g., fluoxetine) or their concentrations remained stable during the photocatalytic treatment time period (e.g., trimethoprim). In total 11 transformation products (TPs) were formed along the degradation processes and were identified by using liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry.

Presence of pharmaceuticals in fish collected from urban rivers in the U.S. EPA 2008-2009 National Rivers and Streams Assessment

Fish are good indicators of aquatic environment pollution because of their capability to uptake pollutants contained in water. Therefore, accumulation of pharmaceutical compounds in freshwater and marine fish and other aquatic organisms has been studied extensively in the last decade. In this context, the present study investigates the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in wild fish from 25 polluted river sites in the USA, downstream from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Sample sites constitute a subset of urban rivers investigated in the U.S. EPA's 2008-2009 National Rivers and Streams Assessment. Thirteen pharmaceuticals (out of the twenty compounds analyzed) were quantified in fish fillets at concentrations commonly below 10ngg^-1, in accordance with the findings from previous studies in the USA and Europe. The psychoactive drugs venlafaxine, carbamazepine and its metabolite 2-hydroxy carbamazepine were the most prevalent compounds (58%, 27% and 42%, respectively). This group of drugs is highly prescribed and rather resistant to degradation during conventional treatment in WWTPs as well as in natural aquatic environments. Salbutamol, a drug used to treat asthma, and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide were also frequently detected (in >20% of the samples). Occurrence of six pharmaceutical families due to chronic exposure at environmental concentrations in water was detected in eight fish species.

CTAB and SDS assisted facile fabrication of SnO2 nanoparticles for effective degradation of carbamazepine from aqueous phase: A systematic and comparative study of their degradation performance

In the present study, SnO₂ nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by chemical precipitation method using anhydrous aspartic acid and surfactant at two annealing temperatures, 300 °C and 600 °C. The effect of surfactants cationic CTAB and anionic SDS on the synthesized SnO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) were studied elaborately. In this article, for the first time, SnO₂ NPs were employed as an excellent photocatalyst in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ), a popular antiepileptic drug which is most commonly detected pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in municipal wastewater under UV-C light irradiation. Comparative studies between the photocatalytic activity of SnO₂ NPs synthesized with CTAB (SC1) and SDS (SS1) on the degradation of the CBZ drug were investigated. Parameters like the effect of catalytic loading, initial concentration, pH and contact time were also studied for optimization. The results indicate that SC1 is a better photocatalyst with rate constant 6.66 × 10^-2 min^-1 than SS1 with rate 5.7 × 10^-2 min^-1. To determine the transformation product formed on the photodegradation LCMS (ESI) analysis was done. The synthesized SnO₂ NPs can be recycled up to 8th cycles without any notable alteration in its photocatalytic activity.
