Selenium spatial distribution and bioavailability of soil-plant systems in China: a comprehensive review

Selenium (Se) has a dual nature, with beneficial and harmful effects on plants, essential for both humans and animals, playing a crucial role in ecosystem regulation. Insufficient Se in specific terrestrial environments raises concerns due to its potential to cause diseases, while excess Se can lead to severe toxicity. Thus, maintaining an optimal Se level is essential for living organisms. This review focuses first on Se transformation, speciation, and geochemical properties in soil, and then provides a concise overview of Se distribution in Chinese soil and crops, with a focus on the relationship between soil Se levels and parent materials. Additionally, this paper explores Se bioavailability, considering parent materials and soil physicochemical properties, using partial least squares path modeling for analysis. This paper aimed to be a valuable resource for effectively managing Se-enriched soil resources, contributing to a better understanding of Se role in ecosystems.

Antagonistic Effects, Sources, and Distribution of Selenium and Toxic Metals in Fish from Selenium-Rich and High Cadmium Areas, Dashan Region, China

The Gongxin River is one of the main rivers in the Dashan Region of Anhui Province in China, which is a Se-rich and high-Cd area, but no research has focused on the concentration, source, antagonism, and health risks of Se and TMs in fish. In this study, 120 fish samples (14 species), 24 sediment samples, and 24 water samples were collected to investigate the antagonistic effects, sources, and health risks of TMs and Se in fish from a typical selenium-rich and high cadmium region. Zn and Se in fish from the Gongxin River were higher than in the background, which might be attributed to the different feeding habits of different fish species. The apparent antagonism between Se and Cu, Pb, and Cd was explored, and the results showed that 30%, 75%, and 100% of the Se/Cu, Se/Pb, and Se/Cd ratios were greater than one, indicating that Cu, Pb, and Cd in fish might be combined with or detoxicated by Se. The source analysis of the elements showed that the geological background was the source of TMs and Se in fish samples. The amounts of Se and TMs were all within China's acceptable level guidelines, signifying no harm to citizens from eating fish.

A preliminary predictive model for selenium nutritional status in residents based on three selenium biomarkers

BACKGROUND

Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient and an important component of many selenoproteins that possess fundamental importance to human health. Selenium deficiency and excess will cause corresponding diseases in the human body. The nutritional health of Se in the human body mainly depends on the daily dietary Se intake of the human body, which in turn depends to a certain extent on the content of Se transmitted along the food chain. This study aims to research the transport of Se through the soil-crop-human chain in regions with different Se levels, and to establish the model between the residents' dietary Se intake and the three Se biomarkers (hair, nails, and plasma), to predict the nutritional health status of Se in residents through Se biomarkers.

METHOD

Carry out field and cross-sectional surveys of populations in Loujiaba Village and Longshui Village. Samples were collected from soil, crops, drinking water, residents' hair, nails, plasma, and diet. The concentration of available Se fractions was extracted from soil samples using 0.1 mol/L K2HPO4. The concentration of total Se for all samples was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the relative standard deviation was less than 5%. In this study, hair, nails, and blood samples were collected from volunteers according to the Declaration of Helsinki and the Ethics Committee of Soochow University. The dietary nutritional structure and dietary Se intake of the population were randomly selected by 12 volunteers using the duplicate portion method. Data were described using mean ± standard deviation. We performed saliency analysis and correlation analysis (with Pearson correlation coefficient), and fitted a regression to evaluate the associations between these variables.

RESULTS

The soil total Se (5201 ± 609.2 μg/kg) and available Se (307.7 ± 83.5 μg/kg) in Luojiaba Village (LJB) were significantly higher than the soil total Se (229.2 ± 32.5 μg/kg) and available Se (21.9 ± 4.0 μg/kg) in Longshui Village (LS). The residents' dietary Se intake of LJB (150.3 ± 2.2 μg/d) was within the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended intake range, while LS (16.0 ± 0.4 μg/d) was close to the range of Keshan disease occurrence, and there was a risk of insufficient Se intake. The correlation analysis found significant positive correlations between residents' dietary Se intake and the three Se biomarkers. According to the preliminary model established in this study, if the daily dietary Se intake of residents reaches the WHO recommended value of 55-400 μg, the hair, nails, and plasma of Se concentration will be 522.1-2850.5 μg/kg, 1069.0-6147.4 μg/kg, and 128.3-661.36 μg/L, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Selenium is transmitted through the soil-crop-human chain, and the Se concentration that enters the human body through the food chain in high-Se areas is significantly higher than that in low-Se areas. The nutritional health status of Se in the human body depends on the daily dietary intake of the human body, and there is a significant correlation between the daily dietary Se intake of the human body and the three biomarkers of Se levels in the human body, so the three biomarkers can be used to evaluate the Se nutritional health of the human.

Micronuclei frequency and exposure to chemical mixtures in three Colombian mining populations

The Colombian mining industry has witnessed significant growth. Depending on the scale and mineral extracted, complex chemical mixtures are generated, impacting the health of occupationally exposed populations and communities near mining projects. Increasing evidence suggests that chromosomal instability (CIN) is an important link between the development of certain diseases and exposure to complex mixtures. To better understand the effects of exposure to complex mixtures we performed a biomonitoring study on 407 healthy individuals from four areas: three located in municipalities exploiting different-scale mining systems and a reference area with no mining activity. Large, medium, and small-scale mining systems were analyzed in Montelibano (Córdoba), artisanal and small-scale mining (ASGM) in Nechí (Antioquia), and a closed mining system in Aranzazu (Caldas). The reference area with no mining activity was established in Montería (Córdoba). ICP-MS measured multi-elemental exposure in hair, and CIN was evaluated using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus technique (MNBN). Exposure to mixtures of chemical elements was comparable in workers and residents of the mining areas but significantly higher compared to reference individuals. In Montelibano, increased MNBN frequencies were associated with combined exposure to Se, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Mg. This distinct pattern significantly differed from other areas. Specifically, in Nechí, Cr, Ni, Hg, Se, and Mg emerged as the primary contributors to elevated frequencies of MNBN. In contrast, a combination of Hg and Ni played a role in increasing MNBN in Aranzazu. Interestingly, Se consistently correlated with increased MNBN frequencies across all active mining areas. Chemical elements in Montelibano exhibit a broader range compared to other mining zones, reflecting the characteristics of the high-impact and large-scale mining in the area. This research provides valuable insights into the effects of exposure to chemical mixtures, underscoring the importance of employing this approach in the risk assessment of communities, especially those from residential areas.

Topsoil selenium (Se) under Se-rich farming in China: Current status, cropping impacts and ecological risk assessment

Selenium (Se), as an essential microelement, can be supplied through Se-biofortified food from Se-rich soils and associated farming practices for human health, while it can also cause eco-risks if overapplied. In this study, a multi-scale spatiotemporal meta-analysis was conducted to guide sustainable Se-rich farming in China by combining a long-term survey with a reviewed database. The weighted mean concentration, spatial distribution of soil Se, nationwide topsoil Se variation from cropping impacts and its bioavailability-based ecological risks were assessed and quantified. The results showed that the weighted mean content (0.3 mg kg-1) of China was slightly higher than that of previous nationwide topsoil Se surveys, as more Se-rich areas were found in recent high-density sampling surveys. Cropping has overall reduced Se content by 9.5% from farmland across China and deprived more with the increase in farming rotation driven by geo-climatic conditions. Long-term cropping removed Se from Se-rich areas but accumulated it in Se-deficient areas. Additionally, the bioavailable Se content of topsoil in China ranged from 0 to 332 μg kg-1, and the bioavailability-based eco-risks indicated that high eco-risks only existed in overfertilized and extremely high-Se soils, such as in Enshi, Ziyang and some coalfield areas. This work provides evidence for the development of sustainable Se-rich farming with proper utilization of soil Se resources, simultaneously protecting the soil eco-environment.

Irrigation leads to new Se-toxicity paddy fields in and around typical Se-toxicity area

Although the issue has been of much concern and has subsequently been controlled for years, the environmental risk of excess selenium (Se) in farmlands still has not been eliminated in Se-toxicity areas. Different types of farmland utilization can change Se behavior in soil. Thus, located field monitoring and surveys of various farmland soils in and around typical Se-toxicity areas spanning eight years were conducted in the tillage layer and deeper soils. The source of new Se contamination in farmlands was traced along the irrigation and natural waterway. This research indicated that 22 % of paddy fields increased to Se-toxicity in surface soil led by irrigation with high-Se river water. Selenate is the dominant Se species in rivers (90 %) originating from geological background areas with high Se. Both soil organic matter (SOM) and amorphous iron content played important roles in the fixation of input Se. Thus, available Se was increased by more than twofold in paddy fields. The release of residual Se and eventual bounding by organic matter is commonly observed, thus suggesting that stable soil Se availability seems sustainable for a long time. This study is the first report in China that shows how new soil Se-toxicity farmland is caused by high-Se water irrigation. This research warns that external attention should be paid to the selection of irrigation water in high-Se geological background areas to avoid new Se contamination.

Differences in selenium concentration and bioavailability between paddy and dryland soils of China: A study based on literature collection and field sampling

Lack systematic understanding of differences in environmental behavior of selenium between paddy and dryland soils affects Se biofortification and leads to human Se-related health risks. Therefore, this study investigated differences in Se concentration and bioavailability between paddy and dryland soils using data collected from literatures and field sampling. Our analysis showed paddy soil Se concentration in Se-rich area of China was significantly lower than that in dryland soil. Selenium biological concentration factor of rice grain (BCF_grain) in Se-rich area was lower than that in non-Se-rich area attributed to higher percentage of selenite in available Se. Concentration and percentage of available Se were in dryland soil lower than those in paddy soil and this affected BCF_grain of maize, whereas BCF_grain of rice was further influenced by its Se transport capacity. The ranges of Se concentration in Se-rich paddy (0.14-3.63 mg kg^-1) and dryland (0.45-1.17 mg kg^-1) soils were derived using a linear regression model. The current soil Se concentration evaluation standard was only suitable for dryland but overestimated Se-deficiency and Se-toxicity levels in paddy field. The present study provides theoretical foundations for understanding Se concentrations and bioavailability in soils and selecting efficient and safe approach on cultivated land use.

Selenium Species and Fractions in the Rock-Soil-Plant Interface of Maize (Zea mays L.) Grown in a Natural Ultra-Rich Se Environment

Selenium (Se) enrichments or deficiency in maize (Zea mays L.), one of the world's most important staple foods and livestock feeds, can significantly affect many people's diets, as Se is essential though harmful in excess. In particular, Se-rich maize seems to have been one of the factors that led to an outbreak of selenosis in the 1980s in Naore Valley in Ziyang County, China. Thus, this region's geological and pedological enrichment offers some insight into the behavior of Se in naturally Se-rich crops. This study examined total Se and Se species in the grains, leaves, stalks, and roots of 11 maize plant samples, Se fractions of soils around the rhizosphere, and representative parent rock materials from Naore Valley. The results showed that total Se concentrations in the collected samples were observed in descending order of soil > leaf > root > grain > stalk. The predominant Se species detected in maize plants was SeMet. Inorganic Se forms, mainly Se(VI), decreased from root to grain, and were possibly assimilated into organic forms. Se(IV) was barely present. The natural increases of Se concentration in soils mainly affected leaf and root dry-weight biomasses of maize. In addition, Se distribution in soils markedly correlated with the weathered Se-rich bedrocks. The analyzed soils had lower Se bioavailability than rocks, with Se accumulated predominantly as recalcitrant residual Se. Thus, the maize plants grown in these natural Se-rich soils may uptake Se mainly from the oxidation and leaching of the remaining organic-sulfide-bound Se fractions. A viewpoint shift from natural Se-rich soils as menaces to possibilities for growing Se-rich agricultural products is also discussed in this study.

Selenium and toxic metals in human hair of the Dashan Region, China: Concentrations, sources, and antagonism effect

The Dashan Region was a Se-rich region of China. In this study, 131 residents' human hair samples were collected. The concentrations of Se and toxic metals were analyzed, and the health risk was estimated using the concentration data. Cd and As concentrations were significantly higher than in East China. Se and most toxic metal concentrations increased with age (except for the aged people). Furthermore, gender and smoking habits might have a significant impact on toxic metals and Se levels. Multivariable statistics analysis revealed that Se and toxic metals primarily originate in the environment and are then transferred to the human body via the food chain. Dietary habits had an effect on the Se and As concentrations in hair, according to the results of stable isotope analysis. To assess detoxification ability, the Se/ toxic metal molar ratio was used as an indicator. The results demonstrated that the antagonistic effect of Se and Cd, As, Cr, and Hg (molar ratio > 1) could effectively protect residents in the study area from Cd and As pollution in daily life.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Research on Selenium in Drinking Water during the 1990-2021 Period: Treatment Options for Selenium Removal

A bibliometric analysis based on the Scopus database was carried out to summarize the global research related to selenium in drinking water from 1990 to 2021 and identify the quantitative characteristics of the research in this period. The results from the analysis revealed that the number of accumulated publications followed a quadratic growth, which confirmed the relevance this research topic is gaining during the last years. High research efforts have been invested to define safe selenium content in drinking water, since the insufficient or excessive intake of selenium and the corresponding effects on human health are only separated by a narrow margin. Some important research features of the four main technologies most frequently used to remove selenium from drinking water (coagulation, flocculation and precipitation followed by filtration; adsorption and ion exchange; membrane-based processes and biological treatments) were compiled in this work. Although the search of technological options to remove selenium from drinking water is less intensive than the search of solutions to reduce and eliminate the presence of other pollutants, adsorption was the alternative that has received the most attention according to the research trends during the studied period, followed by membrane technologies, while biological methods require further research efforts to promote their implementation.

Spatial distribution and environmental impact factors of soil selenium in Hainan Island, China

Selenium is an essential micronutrient for the human body, given its various health benefits. However, Se deficiency is widespread globally, and dietary adjustment is a feasible way to supplement people's Se daily intake. The Multi-purpose Regional Geochemical Survey (NMPRGS) conducted in Hainan Island found an abundance of Se-rich soil. These Se resources have been utilized to grow naturally Se-rich produce. However, insufficient research has been conducted into the spatial distribution and enrichment of soil Se in Hainan Island. This paper analysed the effect of the environmental impact factors (parent rock, precipitation, etc.) on soil Se, using data from the NMPRGS database. The results showed that, in comparison to the baseline value of Chinese soil, the enrichment degree of Se in the topsoil of Hainan Island was higher, but its distribution was uneven. The parent rock, precipitation, soil type, and soil characteristics all affect the concentration and spatial distribution of regional soil Se. Geographically weighted regression showed that Iodine, pH, SOC, and TFe₂O₃ have a non-stationarity spatial relationship with Se. There was a significant correlation between soil Se and Chemical alteration index (CIA) in granite areas, while CIA was also related to mean annual precipitation (MAP). The concentration enrichment factor values of Se show that the external input of Se in high MAP areas is significantly higher than that in low MAP areas. Based on these results, three important environmental impact factors on soil Se enrichment at the regional scale in Hainan Island were defined: 1) Se-rich rocks; 2) precipitation; 3) SOC. These results can provide guidance for the planning and layout of Se-rich agriculture.

Selenium Deficiency Due to Diet, Pregnancy, Severe Illness, or COVID-19-A Preventable Trigger for Autoimmune Disease

The trace element selenium (Se) is an essential part of the human diet; moreover, increased health risks have been observed with Se deficiency. A sufficiently high Se status is a prerequisite for adequate immune response, and preventable endemic diseases are known from areas with Se deficiency. Biomarkers of Se status decline strongly in pregnancy, severe illness, or COVID-19, reaching critically low concentrations. Notably, these conditions are associated with an increased risk for autoimmune disease (AID). Positive effects on the immune system are observed with Se supplementation in pregnancy, autoimmune thyroid disease, and recovery from severe illness. However, some studies reported null results; the database is small, and randomized trials are sparse. The current need for research on the link between AID and Se deficiency is particularly obvious for rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Despite these gaps in knowledge, it seems timely to realize that severe Se deficiency may trigger AID in susceptible subjects. Improved dietary choices or supplemental Se are efficient ways to avoid severe Se deficiency, thereby decreasing AID risk and improving disease course. A personalized approach is needed in clinics and during therapy, while population-wide measures should be considered for areas with habitual low Se intake. Finland has been adding Se to its food chain for more than 35 years-a wise and commendable decision, according to today's knowledge. It is unfortunate that the health risks of Se deficiency are often neglected, while possible side effects of Se supplementation are exaggerated, leading to disregard for this safe and promising preventive and adjuvant treatment options. This is especially true in the follow-up situations of pregnancy, severe illness, or COVID-19, where massive Se deficiencies have developed and are associated with AID risk, long-lasting health impairments, and slow recovery.

Soil Selenium Concentration and Residents Daily Dietary Intake in a Selenosis Area: A Preliminary Study in Yutangba Village, Enshi City, China

In 1963, selenosis occurred in Yutangba Village, Enshi City, China. Subsequently, local residents migrated to a new area of Yutangba to avoid high selenium (Se) exposure. In this study, 19 soil samples, 43 food samples, 60 hair samples and 58 plasma samples from local residents were randomly collected in New Yutangba Village. The mean total Se concentrations in cultivated soil samples were 1753.6 ± 742.8 µg/kg (n = 14). The estimated daily Se intake in New Yutangba Village decreased to 63.2 ± 39.8 µg/day, slightly higher than the recommended dietary Se intake for adults in China (60 µg/day). The mean Se concentrations in hair and plasma samples were 549.7 ± 165.2 µg/kg (n = 60) and 98.4 ± 32.1 µg/L (n = 58), respectively. The result indicated that appropriate activities, such as relocation, consuming a mixture of local foods and market foods containing low Se concentration, could effectively reduce the risk of high Se exposure.

DOM derivations determine the distribution and bioavailability of DOM-Se in selenate applied soil and mechanisms

Straw amendment and plant root exudates modify the quality and quantities of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) and then manipulate the fractions of soil selenium (Se) and its bioavailability. Two typical soils with distinct pH were selected to investigate the effect of different contributors on DOM-Se in soil. The mechanisms relying on the variation in DOM characteristics (quality, quantity and composition) were explored by UV-Vis, ATR-FTIR and 3D-EEM. Straw amendment significantly (p < 0.05) suppressed the selenate bioavailability. The reduction in wheat Se content was greater in krasnozems than in Lou soil, as more HA fraction appeared in krasnozems. The root exudates of wheat mainly elevated the low molecular hydrophilic compounds (Hy) in soil, which contributed to the SOL-Hy-Se fractions and thus grain Se in soils (p < 0.01). However, straw amendment promoted DOM transforming from small molecules (Hy and FA) to aromatic large molecules (HA), when accompanied with the reduction and retention of Se associated with these molecules. As a result, selenium bioavailability and toxicity reduced with DOM amendment and DOM-Se transformation.

Sources, Fraction Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Selenium (Se) in Dashan Village, a Se-Rich Area in Anhui Province, China

Soil, rock, potable water, animal food and human hair samples were collected from the Dashan village, a typical selenium (Se)-rich area of China. Se content and fraction distribution were determined to trace the source of soil Se and evaluate the potential health risk to humans. Total Se contents in soils ranged from 0.60 to 10.46 mg kg^- 1. The fractions of soil Se followed the order: residual Se (R-Se) > organic-bound Se (O-Se) > acid soluble Se (A-Se) > exchangeable Se (E-Se) > water soluble Se (W-Se). Total Se contents in rocks ranged from 0.07 to 24.8 mg kg^- 1. The dietary Se intake of local residents was estimated to be 261.2 µg day^- 1 and hair Se content varied from 0.34 to 1.35 mg kg^- 1, suggesting that the potential health risk should be concerned. Weathering of carbonaceous rock was speculated to be the primary source of soil Se according to the contents of Se in rocks, the distribution of Se in soil profiles and the relationships between Se and other elements in soils and parent rocks.

Assessing the uptake of selenium from naturally enriched soils by maize (Zea mays L.) using diffusive gradients in thin-films technique (DGT) and traditional extractions

A generally accepted method to predict selenium (Se) bioavailability of long-term contaminated soils has not yet been established, even if risk assessments in selenosis areas are crucial. In this study, a set of methods were tested to assess the bioavailability of Se to field maize. Fifty maize (Zea mays L.) samples and corresponding soils were collected from a selenosis area (Ziyang, China). The diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and the traditional chemical extraction methods, including seven single-step extraction procedures and a five-step sequential extraction were used to predict the bioaccumulation of Se in plant. The result verified the presence of 50% of total Se in the form of residual Se fraction, followed by organic-bound and Fe-Mn oxide-bound Se fractions in soil. In addition, Se⁶⁺, Se⁴⁺, and Se^2- were all detected in the solution extracted by H₂O, KCl, phosphate-buffered solution (PBS), NaHCO₃, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-2Na (EDTA-2Na) and ammonium bicarbonate-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (AB-DTPA), but Se⁶⁺ was not extracted by NaOH. The Se extracted by single-step extraction methods was weakly correlated with the Se uptake by plants with relatively high Se concentration (>3 mg·kg^-1). The abilities of the tested methods to predict Se bioavailability in naturally Se-enriched soils declined in the following order: DGT > soil solution > PBS > KCl > H₂O > NaHCO₃ > EDTA > DTPA > NaOH. The ratio of C_DGT to soil solution Se (C_soln) totaled 0.13, indicating an extremely low Se supply from the soil solid phase to the soil solution. Se measured by DGT was mainly derived from the soluble and exchangeable Se fractions that can accurately reflect the plant-absorbed Se pool. Therefore, the DGT technique is highly applicable in the simultaneous prediction of Se bioavailability in naturally Se-enriched soils.

Nutraceutical Supplements in the Thyroid Setting: Health Benefits beyond Basic Nutrition

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in nutraceuticals, which may be considered as an efficient, preventive, and therapeutic tool in facing different pathological conditions, including thyroid diseases. Although iodine remains the major nutrient required for the functioning of the thyroid gland, other dietary components play important roles in clinical thyroidology-these include selenium, l-carnitine, myo-inositol, melatonin, and resveratrol-some of which have antioxidant properties. The main concern regarding the appropriate and effective use of nutraceuticals in prevention and treatment is due to the lack of clinical data supporting their efficacy. Another limitation is the discrepancy between the concentration claimed by the label and the real concentration. This paper provides a detailed critical review on the health benefits, beyond basic nutrition, of some popular nutraceutical supplements, with a special focus on their effects on thyroid pathophysiology and aims to distinguish between the truths and myths surrounding the clinical use of such nutraceuticals.

Environmental Selenium and Human Health: an Update

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Selenium, a trace element, is ubiquitous in the environment. The main source of human exposure is diet. Despite its nutritional benefits, it is one of the most toxic naturally occurring elements. Selenium deficiency and overexposure have been associated with adverse health effects. Its level of toxicity may depend on its chemical form, as inorganic and organic species have distinct biological properties.

RECENT FINDINGS

Nonexperimental and experimental studies have generated insufficient evidence for a role of selenium deficiency in human disease, with the exception of Keshan disease, a cardiomyopathy. Conversely, recent randomized trials have indicated that selenium overexposure is positively associated with type 2 diabetes and high-grade prostate cancer. In addition, a natural experiment has suggested an association between overexposure to inorganic hexavalent selenium and two neurodegenerative diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Risk assessments should be revised to incorporate the results of studies demonstrating toxic effects of selenium. Additional observational studies and secondary analyses of completed randomized trials are needed to address the uncertainties regarding the health risks of selenium exposure.

Selenium distribution in the Chinese environment and its relationship with human health: A review

This paper reviewed the Se in the environment (including total Se in soil, water, plants, and food), the daily Se intake and Se content in human hair were also examined to elucidate Se distribution in the environment and its effects on human health in China. Approximately 51% of China is Se deficiency in soil, compared with 72% in the survey conducted in 1989. Low Se concentrations in soil, water, plants, human diet and thus human hair were found in most areas of China. The only significant difference was observed between Se-rich and Se-excessive areas for Se contents in water, staple cereal, vegetables, fruits, and animal-based food, no remarkable contrast was found among other areas (p>0.05). This study also demonstrated that 39-61% of Chinese residents have lower daily Se intakes according to WHO/FAO recommended value (26-34μg/day). Further studies should focus on thoroughly understanding the concentration, speciation, and distribution of Se in the environment and food chain to successfully utilize Se resources, remediate Se deficiency, and assess the Se states and eco-effects on human health.
