Glutamic acid assisted phyto-management of silver-contaminated soils through sunflower; physiological and biochemical response

Treatment of marble industry wastewater by Brassica napus (L.) under oxalic acid amendment: efficacy as fodder and carcinogenic risk assessment

In the present study, Brassica napus, a food plant, was grown for phytoextraction of selected heavy metals (HMs) from marble industry wastewater (WW) under oxalic acid (OA) amendment. The hydroponic experiment was performed under different combination of WW with OA in complete randomized design. Photosynthetic pigments and growth reduction were observed in plants treated with WW alone amendments. The combination of OA in combination with WW significantly enhanced the growth of plants along with antioxidant enzyme activities compared with WW-treated-only plants. HM stress alone enhanced the hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, and malondialdehyde contents in plants. OA-treated plants were observed with enhanced accumulation of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) concentrations in the roots and shoots of B. napus. The maximum concentration and accumulation of Cd in root, stem, and leaves was increased by 25%, 30%, and 30%; Cu by 42%, 24%, and 17%; and Pb by 45%, 24%, and 43%, respectively, under OA amendment. Average daily intake and hazard quotient (HQ) were calculated for males, females, and children in two phases of treatments in phytoremediation of metals before and after accumulation into B. napus leaves and stems. HQ of metals in the leaves and stem was < 1 before metal accumulation, whereas > 1 was observed after HM accumulation for all males, females, and children. Similarly, the hazard index of the three study types was found > 1. It was observed that the estimated excess lifetime cancer risk was of grade VII (very high risk), not within the accepted range of 1 × 10-4 to 1 × 10-6. Based on the present study, the increased levels of HMs up to carcinogenicity was observed in the B. napus which is not safe to be consumed later as food.

Phytoremediation potential of Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes, and Typha latifolia for chromium with stimulation of secondary metabolites

Anthropogenic activities have significantly polluted the natural environments all over the world. Leather processing industries release toxic heavy metals through their effluents posing a great threat to the environment. Chromium (Cr) is the major component of tannery effluents. We designed this experiment with the aim to remediate Cr from effluents of tanneries through phytoremediation. We selected three native macrophytes i.e. Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes, and Typha latifolia to grow in a set of Constructed Wetland systems (CWs) with a continuous supply of tannery wastewater. T. latifolia was the most efficient phytoremediator of these macrophytes as it reduced the Cr content by 96.7%. The effluent after passing through the CWs containing T. latifolia showed only 0.426 mg/L Cr content. All macrophytes showed an enhanced phytochemical activity such as total antioxidant activity (TAA), total reduction potential (TRP), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and DPPH radical scavenging activity (DPPH) substantially. The activation of antioxidant mechanism may have contributed towards robust defense system of these plants for survival in excessive Cr contaminated media. Also, these macrophytes showed a positive relationship in reducing Cr content from tannery wastewater. Results of this study could help in effective sustainable management of aquatic environments contaminated with metal pollutants from human activities.

Silver contamination and its toxicity and risk management in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Silver (Ag), a naturally occurring, rare and precious metal, is found in major minerals such as cerargyrite (AgCl), pyrargyrite (Ag₃SbS₃), proustite (Ag₃AsS₃), and stephanite (Ag₅SbS₄). From these minerals, Ag is released into soil and water through the weathering of rocks and mining activities. Silver also enters the environment by manufacturing and using Ag compounds in electroplating and photography, catalysts, medical devices, and batteries. With >400 t of Ag NPs produced yearly, Ag NPs have become a rapidly growing source of anthropogenic Ag input in the environment. In soils and natural waters, most Ag is sorbed to soil particles and sediments and precipitated as oxides, carbonates, sulphides, chlorides and hydroxides. Silver and its compounds are toxic, and humans and other animals are exposed to Ag through inhalation of air and the consumption of Ag-contaminated food and drinking water. Remediation of Ag-contaminated soil and water sources can be achieved through immobilization and mobilization processes. Immobilization of Ag in soil and groundwater reduces the bioavailability and mobility of Ag, while mobilization of Ag in the soil can facilitate its removal. This review provides an overview of the current understanding of the sources, geochemistry, health hazards, remediation practices and regulatory mandates of Ag contamination in complex environmental settings, including soil and aquatic ecosystems. Knowledge gaps and future research priorities in the sustainable management of Ag contamination in these settings are also discussed.

Accumulation Potential Cadmium and Lead by Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under Citric and Glutaric Acid-Assisted Phytoextraction

Organic acid assistance is one of the effective methods for phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. In this experiment, the addition of citric and glutaric acids was selected to improve the accumulation of cadmium and lead by Helianthus annuus L. Results showed that citric and glutaric acids elevated the growth of the plants and stimulated Cd/Pb uptake by plant in single Cd/Pb treatments, but glutaric acid showed inhibitory action on the uptake of metals in complex treatments. Organic acids impacted the translocation of Cd/Pb differently, and citric acids (30 mg·L^-1) enhanced the translocation of Cd to aerial parts of the plants in Cd (5 mg·kg^-1) and Cd (10 mg·kg^-1) plus Pb treatments. Glutaric acid (30 mg·L^-1) could promote the translocation factors in the complex treatments of Cd (5 mg·kg^-1) with Pb (50, 100 mg·kg^-1) added. The application of citric and glutaric acid could be conducive to increase floral growth when proper doses are used, and incorporation of these organic acids can be a useful approach to assist cadmium and lead uptake by sunflower. However, growth, bioaccumulation, and translocation of metals may differ due to the metals' property, kinds, and concentrations of organic acids.

Microwave Irradiation and Glutamic Acid-Assisted Phytotreatment of Tannery and Surgical Industrial Wastewater by Sorghum

We investigated how different doses of microwave irradiation (MR) affect seed germination in Sorghum, including the level of remediation against textile and surgical wastewater (WW) by modulating biochemical and morpho-physiological mechanisms under glutamic acid (GA) application. The experiment was conducted to determine the impact of foliar-applied GA on Sorghum under wastewater conditions. Plants were treated with or without microwave irradiation (30 s, 2.45 GHz), GA (5 and 10 mM), and wastewater (0, 25, 50, and 100). Growth and photosynthetic pigments were significantly decreased in plants only treated with various concentrations of WW. GA significantly improved the plant growth characteristics both in MR-treated and -untreated plants compared with respective controls. HMs stress increased electrolyte leakage (EL), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content; however, the GA chelation significantly improved the antioxidant enzymes activities such as ascorbate oxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) both in MR-treated and -untreated plants under WW stress compared with respective controls. The results suggested that the MR-treated plants accumulate higher levels of HMs under GA addition in comparison to the WW-only-treated and MR-untreated plants. The maximum increase in Cd accumulation was observed in the range of 14–629% in the roots, 15–2964% in the stems, and 26–4020% in the leaves; the accumulation of Cu was 18–2757% in the roots, 15–4506% in the stems, and 23–4605% in the leaves; and the accumulation of Pb was 13–4122% in the roots, 21–3588% in the stems, and 21–4990% in the leaves under 10 mM GA and MR-treated plants. These findings confirmed that MR-treated sorghum plants had a higher capacity for HMs uptake under GA and could be used as a potential candidate for wastewater treatment.

Uranium (U) source, speciation, uptake, toxicity and bioremediation strategies in soil-plant system: A review

Uranium(U), a highly toxic radionuclide, is becoming a great threat to soil health development, as returning nuclear waste containing U into the soil systems is increased. Numerous studies have focused on: i) tracing the source in U contaminated soils; ii) exploring U geochemistry; and iii) assessing U phyto-uptake and its toxicity to plants. Yet, there are few literature reviews that systematically summarized the U in soil-plant system in past decade. Thus, we present its source, geochemical behavior, uptake, toxicity, detoxification, and bioremediation strategies based on available data, especially published from 2018 to 2021. In this review, we examine processes that can lead to the soil U contamination, indicating that mining activities are currently the main sources. We discuss the relationship between U bioavailability in the soil-plant system and soil conditions including redox potential, soil pH, organic matter, and microorganisms. We then review the soil-plant transfer of U, finding that U mainly accumulates in roots with a quite limited translocation. However, plants such as willow, water lily, and sesban are reported to translocate high U levels from roots to aerial parts. Indeed, U does not possess any identified biological role, but provokes numerous deleterious effects such as reducing seed germination, inhibiting plant growth, depressing photosynthesis, interfering with nutrient uptake, as well as oxidative damage and genotoxicity. Yet, plants tolerate U toxicity via various defense strategies including antioxidant enzymes, compartmentalization, and phytochelatin. Moreover, we review two biological remediation strategies for U-contaminated soil: (i) phytoremediation and (ii) microbial remediation. They are quite low-cost and eco-friendly compared with traditional physical or chemical remediation technologies. Finally, we conclude some promising research challenges regarding U biogeochemical behavior in soil-plant systems. This review, thus, further indicates that the combined application of U low accumulators and microbial inoculants may be an effective strategy for the bioremediation of U-contaminated soils.

Foliar application of gibberellic acid endorsed phytoextraction of copper and alleviates oxidative stress in jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) plant grown in highly copper-contaminated soil of China

Copper (Cu) is an abundant essential micronutrient element in various rocks and minerals and is required for a variety of metabolic processes in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. However, excess Cu can disturb normal development by adversely affecting biochemical reactions and physiological processes in plants. The present study was conducted to explore the potential of gibberellic acid (GA₃) on fibrous jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) seedlings grown on Cu mining soil obtained from Hubei Province China. Exogenous application of GA₃ (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) on 60-day-old seedlings of C. capsularis which was able to grow in highly Cu-contaminated soil (2221 mg/kg) to study different morphological, physiological, and Cu uptake and accumulation in different parts of C. capsularis seedlings. According to the results, increasing concentration of GA₃ (more likely 100 mg/L) alleviates Cu toxicity in C. capsularis seedlings by increasing plant growth, biomass, photosynthetic pigments, and gaseous exchange attributes. The results also showed that exogenous application of GA₃ reduced oxidative stress in C. capsularis seedlings by the generation of extra reactive oxygen species (ROS). The reduction in oxidative stress in C. capsularis seedlings is because that plant has strong enzymatic antioxidants [superoxidase dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT)], which ultimately increased their activities to overcome oxidative damage in the cells/tissues. In addition to the plant growth, biomass, and photosynthesis, foliar application of GA₃ also helps to increase metal (Cu) concentration in different parts of the plants when compared to 0 mg/L of application of GA₃. From these findings, we can conclude that foliar application of GA₃ plays a promising role in reducing ROS generation in the plant cells/tissues and increased phytoextraction of Cu in different plant parts. However, more investigation is needed on field experiments to find a combination of GA₃ with a very higher concentration of Cu using fibrous C. capsularis.

Role of iron-lysine on morpho-physiological traits and combating chromium toxicity in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) plants irrigated with different levels of tannery wastewater

Chromium (Cr) is among the most widespread toxic trace elements found in agricultural soils resulting from various anthropogenic activities. However, the role of micronutrient-amino acid chelates in reducing Cr toxicity in crop plants has recently been suggested. The present study was conducted to explore the effect of iron (Fe) chelated with lysine (lys) on plant growth, biomass, gaseous exchange attributes, oxidative stress indicators, antioxidant response, and Cr uptake in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) plants irrigated with different levels of tannery wastewater in soil collected from District Kasur of Pakistan. B. napus seedlings (thirty-day-old) were shifted to pots irrigated with different levels of tannery wastewater. After two weeks, foliar application of Fe-lys (5 mM) was carried out for four successive weeks, and plants were harvested carefully post ten weeks of cultivation in tannery wastewater, under controlled conditions. Toxic levels of Cr in the soil significantly decreased plant height, fresh biomass of roots and leaves, dry biomass of roots and leaves, root length, number of leaves, leaf area, total chlorophyll contents, carotenoid contents, transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g_s), net photosynthesis (P_N), and water use efficiency (WUE). Toxic Cr levels in the soil also increased oxidative stress in the roots and leaves of B. napus plants, which were overcome by the activities of various antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Moreover, increasing levels of Cr in the soil caused a significant increase in the Cr content of the roots and shoots of B. napus plants. The negative effects of Cr toxicity could be overturned by Fe-lys application, significantly increasing plant growth, biomass, chlorophyll content, and gaseous exchange attributes by reducing oxidative stress (H₂O₂, MDA, EL) and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, foliar application of Fe-lys reduced the Cr concentration and increased essential micronutrients (Fe contents) in the roots and shoots of B. napus plants. These results shed light on the effectiveness of Fe-lys in improving the growth and up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme activities of B. napus in response to Cr stress. However, further studies at field levels are required to explore the mechanisms of Fe-lys-mediated reduction of the toxicity of not only Cr, but possibly also other heavy metals in plants.

Accumulation potential and tolerance response of Typha latifolia L. under citric acid assisted phytoextraction of lead and mercury

Chelate-assisted phytoextraction by high biomass producing macrophyte plant Typha latifolia L. commonly known as cattail, is gaining much attention worldwide. The present study investigated the effects of Lead (Pb) and Mercury (Hg) on physiology and biochemistry of plant, Pb and Hg uptake in T. latifolia with and without citric acid (CA) amendment. The uniform seedlings of T. latifolia were treated with various concentrations in the hydroponics as: Pb and Hg (1, 2.5, 5 mM) each alone and/or with CA (5 mM). After four weeks of treatments, the results revealed that Pb and Hg significantly reduced the plant agronomic traits as compare to non-treated plants. The addition of CA improved the plant physiology and enhanced the antioxidant enzymes activities to overcome Pb and Hg induced oxidative damage and electrolyte leakage. Our results depicted that Pb and Hg uptake and accumulation by T. latifolia was dose depend whereas, the addition of CA further increased the concentration and accumulation of Pb and Hg by up to 22 & 35% Pb and 72 & 40% Hg in roots, 25 & 26% Pb and 85 & 60% Hg in stems and 22 & 15 Pb and 100 & 58% Hg in leaves respectively compared to Pb and Hg treated only plants. On other hand, the root-shoot translocation factor was ≥1 and bioconcentration factor was also ≥2 for both Pb & Hg. The results also revealed that T. latifolia showed greater tolerance towards Hg and accumulated higher Hg in all parts compared with Pb.

Physiological and Biochemical Response of Alternanthera bettzickiana (Regel) G. Nicholson under Acetic Acid Assisted Phytoextraction of Lead

Heavy metals (HMs) stress causes severe damage to physiology and biochemistry of plant species leading to stunted growth and low yield. Phytoremediation via phytoextraction, a viable low-cost and environment-friendly alternative to other techniques that are often too expensive, impractical and hazardous. However, phytoextraction potential, physiological and biochemical response of various plant species against HMs stress is not fully understood. Among other HMs, lead (Pb) is an inorganic pollutant with deleterious biotic effects. Bioavailability and mobility of the Pb can be enhanced by addition of organic acids. A pot scale experiment was done to assess the effects of Pb on Alternanthera bettzickiana (Regel) G. Nicholson and its ability to accumulate Pb with or without acetic acid (AA). The Results showed that Pb caused significant damage in A. bettzickiana, and its ecotoxicity was evident from increased levels of lipid peroxidation up to 107% under Pb stress. The significant decrease in plant height (32%), root length (21%), leaf area (38%) and number of leaves per plant (46%) was observed. On the other hand, application of AA to Pb stressed plants reduced the oxidative damage by further enhancing the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalases (CAT) up to 16% and 21% respectively. Moreover, addition of AA significantly improved plant total chlorophylls (15%) and carotenoids (50%). The application of AA also promoted Pb accumulation in leaf, stem and roots up to 70%, 65% and 66% respectively. This research concluded that AA has the ability to enhance the phytoextraction of Pb and support the plant growth and physiology under Pb stress condition.

Copper and mercury induced oxidative stresses and antioxidant responses of Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid

Duckweed is recognized as a phytoremediation aquatic plant due to the production of large biomass and a high level of tolerance in stressed conditions. A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate antioxidant response and mechanism of copper and mercury tolerance of S. polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. To understand the changes in chlorophyll content, MDA, proline, and activities of ROS-scavenging enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPOD) during the accumulation of Cu⁺² and Hg⁺², S. polyrhiza were exposed to various concentrations of Cu⁺² (0.0–40 μM) and Hg⁺² (0.0–0.4 μM). antioxidant activity initially indicated enhancing trend with application of 10 μM Cu⁺²; 0.2 μM Hg⁺² (SOD), of 20 μM Cu⁺²; 0.2 μM Hg⁺² (CAT) and of 10 μM Cu⁺²;0.2 μM Hg⁺² (GPOD) and then decreased consistently up to 40 μM Cu⁺² and 0.4 μM Hg⁺². In the experiment chlorophyll and frond multiplication initially showed increasing tendency and decreased gradually with the application of increased metal concentration. Application of heavy metal has constantly enhanced proline and MDA content while the maximum increase was observed with the application of 40 μM Cu; 0.4 μM Hg for proline and MDA respectively. The upregulation of antioxidant enzymes and proline reveals that S. polyrhiza has strong biochemical strategies to deal with the heavy metal toxicity induced by the accumulation of Cu⁺² and Hg⁺².

Effects of PVP-coated silver nanoparticles on enzyme activity, bacterial and archaeal community structure and function in a yellow-brown loam soil

The undesirable effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on soil environment have caused much concern. The previous studies, however, focused on sandy soil, with little known on others. In present study, the effects of polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated AgNPs (0, 1, 10, and 100 mg kg^- 1 soil) on enzyme activities (urease and dehydrogenase), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA), bacterial and archaeal communities, and microbial function profile in a yellow-brown loam soil were investigated. The significant dose-response inhibitions of AgNPs on enzyme activities were observed, with dehydrogenase more susceptible to AgNPs. Both of bacterial and archaeal amoA genes were reduced by AgNPs above 10 mg kg^- 1, with AOB more susceptible to AgNPs than AOA. AgNPs at 100 mg kg^- 1 caused reductions on the dominant Nitrosospira and Nitrosomonas, and even disappearance on Nitrosovibrio, while increase on Nitrososphaera significantly. AgNPs also changed bacterial and archaeal community structure. Exposure to AgNPs at 100 mg kg^- 1 caused significant increases by 186.79% and 44.89% for Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria, while decreases by 47.82%, 44.09%, 43.67%, and 80.44% for Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Planctomycetes, and Verrucomicrobia, respectively. Moreover, three dominant archaeal phyla (Thaumarchaeota, Euryarchaeota, and Parvarchaeota) were also reduced in the presence of AgNPs, especially Thaumarchaeota with the significant reduction of 13.71%. PICRUSt prediction revealed that AgNPs indeed had the potential to change soil microbial community's functional contributions. It must be cautious on the interference of AgNPs to soil ecological functions in the future.

Efficacy of Zea mays L. for the management of marble effluent contaminated soil under citric acid amendment; morpho-physiological and biochemical response

The adverse industrial activities discharged contaminated wastewater directly into the water bodies that contain toxic substances such as heavy metals. The contours use of marble industrial effluents may affect the fertility of soil and crop growth. The present study was conducted to investigate the toxic effects of marble industrial effluents (M.E) on Zea mays L under the exogenous application of citric acid (CA) with different combinations such as marble industrial effluent (0, 30%, 60%, 100%) diluted with distilled water and CA (10 mM). The results showed significant decrease in the growth of Zea mays with increasing concentration of marble industrial effluent. The maximum reduction in plant height, root length, number of leaves, leaf area and fresh and dry biomass was observed at the application of 100% M.E as compared to control. Similar to growth conditions the photosynthetic machinery and the activities of antioxidant enzymes (Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Peroxidases (POD), Catalases (CAT), Ascorbate peroxidase (APX)) was also decreased with increasing concentration of M.E. The application of CA significantly alleviated the M.E induced toxic effect on Zea mays and ameliorated the growth, biomass, photosynthesis and antioxidant enzymes activities by reducing the production of reactive oxygen species. The C.A application also enhanced the heavy metal content such as chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn) in different parts of Zea mays. The results concluded that the Zea mays tolerant varieties can be a potential candidate for the M.E irrigated soil and might be suitable for the phyto-extraction of Cr, Cd and Zn.

Glutamic Acid-Assisted Phytomanagement of Chromium Contaminated Soil by Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.): Morphophysiological and Biochemical Alterations

Chelator-assisted phytoremediation is an economical, sustainable, and ecologically friendly method of extracting heavy metals and metalloids from the soil. Organic chelators are thought to enhance metal availability and mobility in contaminated media, thereby improving phytoextraction. The aim of the present study was to examine whether exogenous application of glutamic acid (GA) could improve chromium (Cr) phytoextraction by sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.). Seeds were planted in plastic pots filled with 5 kg of local agricultural soil spiked with increasing concentrations of Cr (1, 2, and 5 mg kg^-1). Glutamic acid (5 mM) was applied to soil in solution according to a completely randomized experimental design, and the sunflower plants were harvested after 8 weeks. The results indicated that increasing Cr-induced stress significantly inhibited plant growth, leading to reduced biomass, photosynthetic pigment content, activities of antioxidant enzymes, and leaf area of the sunflower plants. However, exogenous addition of GA significantly reduced the Cr-associated toxic effects while also increasing the accumulation of Cr in the plants. Moreover, increasing concentrations of Cr in the soil increased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for the altered antioxidant enzyme activities. The results revealed that GA application to the topsoil enhanced the Cr concentration and accumulation in the root, stem, and leaves by up to 254, 225, 355, and 47, 59, 150% respectively. Further the GA addition reduced the Cr-induced toxicity in plants and might be helpful for enhancing Cr phytoextraction by sunflower plants.

Chelator complexes enhanced Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. phytoremediation efficiency in Cd-contaminated soils

The use of degradable chelating agent to enhance phytoextraction is a promising and low-cost method for remediation of heavy metals-polluted soil. However, very limited information is available regarding the effect of chelating agent combinations on plant growth and its capacity to extract metals. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the applicability of [N, N]-bis glutamic acid (GLDA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), [S, S]- ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), and citric acid (CA) alone and in combination to enhance the phytoextraction efficiency of amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) in two Cd-contaminated agricultural soils (S₁ soil 2.12 mg/kg and S₂ soil 2.89 mg/kg; the environmental standard value of Cd in agricultural soils in China is lower than 0.8 mg/kg). The results showed that, except for EDDS, other treatments had no obvious effect on plant biomass, and even promoted biomass increase to reach 1.06 (S1), 2.07 (S2) g/pot. The increase in total Cd extraction amount by 5 mM of single chelators GLDA and NTA reached 3.87 and 2.81 (S1), and 3.28 and 2.50 (S2) times that of the control group, respectively. For complexed chelating agents, G-N (GLDA + NTA) combinations (GLDA = 3 mM, NTA = 2 mM) extracted the highest amount of Cd compared with other treatments, reaching 0.36 and 0.52 mg/pot (4.50 and 3.71 times that of the control group), respectively. The order of extraction amount was G-N > GLDA > NTA > G-E (GLDA + EDDS) > G-C (GLDA + CA) > CA (5 mM total Cd concentration). Moreover, soil enzyme activity of G-N treatment increased significantly compared to that of the control group, indicating the great application potential of a composite chelating agent relative to a single chelating agent. Therefore, degradable chelators, especially the G-N combination, can effectively increase the available Cd content and greatly enhance the ability of plants to absorb and transport Cd in soils.

Benefits of Ryegrass on Multicontaminated Soils Part 1: Effects of Fertilizers on Bioavailability and Accumulation of Metals

Effects of three phosphorus fertilizers on the shoot biomass and on the accumulation of alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metals in the shoots and roots of ryegrass were studied with two contaminated garden soils. Phosphates were added in sustainable quantities in order to reduce the environmental availability of carcinogenic metals (e.g., Cd and Pb) and to enhance the bioavailability of alkali and alkaline earth metals as well as micronutrients needed by plants. Addition of Ca(H2PO4)2 was the most convenient way to (i) limit the concentration of Cd and Pb, (ii) keep constant the transfer of macro- and micronutrient from the soil to the ryegrass shoots, (iii) decrease the availability of metals, and (iv) increase the ratio values between potential Lewis acids and Cd or Pb in order to produce biosourced catalysis. For instance, the real phytoavailability was reduced by 27%–57% and 64.2%–94.8% for Cd and Pb, respectively. Interestingly, the real phytoavailability of Zn was the highest in the least contaminated soils. Even if soils were highly contaminated, no visual toxicity symptoms were recorded in the growing ryegrasses. This indicates that ryegrass is suitable for the revegetation of contaminated gardens. To promote the sustainable ryegrass production on contaminated soils for production of new organic fragrance and drugs in green processes according to REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation, two processes should be recommended: assisted phytostabilization of the elements, and then assisted phytoextraction by using chelators.

Phytoextraction of cadmium-contaminated soils: comparison of plant species and low molecular weight organic acids

To select suitable plants for phytoextraction of Cd-contaminated soils, we evaluated the phytoextraction potential of five local Cd-accumulators: Amaranthus hypochondriacus L., Solanum nigrum L., Phytolacca acinosa Roxb., Celosia argentea L., and Sedum spectabile Boreau. The plants were grown in three naturally contaminated soils with different total Cd levels (1.57, 3.89, and 22.4 mg kg^-1). Throughout the experimental period, no plants showed any visible symptoms of metal toxicity. The Cd uptake of C. argentea was the greatest in the S-YS soil (105 μg plant^-1) and among the greatest in the S-HC soil and S-TJ soil. Besides, C. argentea exhibited the highest bioconcentration factor (12.3) in three soils. To improve the phytoextraction efficiency of C. argentea, we applied four low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs): tartaric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid. Malic acid was more effective in enhancing Cd uptake by C. argentea than the other LMWOAs. Therefore, C. argentea may be a potential choice in actual remediation projects. Moreover, application of malic acid is an effective way to increase the phytoextraction efficiency of C. argentea.

Effect of pH and citric acid on the growth, arsenic accumulation, and phytochelatin synthesis in Eupatorium cannabinum L., a promising plant for phytostabilization

Heavy-metal contamination of soils has increased in the last decades due to anthropogenic and industrial activities. Arsenic is one of the pollutants that is commonly found in industrial soils and is toxic for both plants and humans. The pH of the soil or the culture medium is one of the most important factors that interferes with the bioavailability of this metalloid to the plant. The addition of chelating agents, such as citric acid (CA), can increase the absorption of As by plants. Therefore, the objective of this work is to study the effect of the pH and the exogenous addition of citric acid on the growth, As accumulation, and thiol compounds in Eupatorium cannabinum; this plant grows naturally in contaminated soils in Asturias, Spain, and has a potential use in phytoremediation. The results showed that E. cannabinum was able to tolerate As stress even at extreme pH values and accumulated a high amounts of As in its roots, which makes it a promising species for the phytostabilization of soils polluted with this metalloid. An addition of 20 mg CA L^-1 led to increased biomass and As accumulation at acidic pH. In order to determine if thiolic compounds, such as phytochelatins, are involved in As accumulation and detoxification in E. cannabinum, we analyzed the synthesis of these compounds in the presence and absence of As and/or citric acid. Our results suggest that these thiolic compounds play a major role in As detoxification, since the presence of CA as a chelating agent reduced the amount of thiols necessary to cope with the toxicity caused by As.
