Biocide emissions from building materials during wet weather: identification of substances, mechanism of release and transfer to the aquatic environment

Quantification and risk assessment of polar organic contaminants in two chalk streams in Hampshire, UK using the Chemcatcher passive sampler

Freshwater systems are facing a number of pressures due to the inputs of polar organic contaminants from a range of sources including agriculture, domestic and industry. The River Itchen and River Test are two sensitive chalk streams in Southern England that are experiencing a decline in invertebrate communities. We used Chemcatcher passive samplers to measure time-weighted average concentrations (14 days) of polar pollutants at nine sites on the River Itchen and eight sites on the River Test over a 12-month period. Sampler extracts were analysed using a targeted LC/MS method. In total, 121 plant protection products and pharmaceutical and personal care products were quantified (range of log Kow from - 1.5 to 7). Concentrations (sub ng L-1 to >500 ng L-1) in both rivers showed spatial and temporal variations. A greater number of compounds and higher concentrations were found in the River Test. The chemical profile was dominated by inputs from wastewater treatment plants and legacy plant protection products. On the River Itchen, high concentrations (∼100 ng L-1) of caffeine were observed directly downstream of a fish farm. Using the NORMAN database, the predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) freshwater values were exceeded by only five contaminants (2-hydroxy-terbuthylazine, alprazolam, azithromycin, diclofenac and imidacloprid). In addition, venlafaxine was detected above its EU Watch List concentration. These exceedances were mainly downstream of direct inputs from treatment plants. These compounds are known to have ecotoxicological effects on a range of aquatic biota including macroinvertebrates. Of concern is the ubiquitous presence of the ectoparasiticide imidacloprid, highlighting the need to control its use. The impact of the cocktail of pollutants found in this study on the long-term effects on chalk stream ecosystems remains unknown and needs further investigation.

Active soil microbial composition and proliferation are directly affected by the presence of biocides from building materials

Combinations of biocides are commonly added to building materials to prevent microbial growth and thereby cause degradation of the façades. These biocides reach the environment by leaching from façades posing an environmental risk. Although ecotoxicity to the aquatic habitat is well established, there is hardly any data on the ecotoxicological effects of biocides on the soil habitat. This study aimed to characterize the effect of the biocides terbutryn, isoproturon, octhilinone, and combinations thereof on the total and metabolically active soil microbial community composition and functions. Total soil microbial community was retrieved directly from the nucleic acid extracts, while the DNA of the active soil microbial community was separated after bromodeoxyuridine labeling. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal internal transcribed spacer region gene-based amplicon sequencing was carried out for both active and total, while gene copy numbers were quantified only for the total soil microbial community. Additionally, soil respiration and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed to investigate overall soil microbial activity. The bacterial and fungal gene copy numbers were significantly affected by single biocides and combined biocide soil treatment but not soil respiration and physico-chemical parameters. While the total soil microbiome experienced only minor effects from single and combined biocide treatment, the active soil microbiome was significantly impacted in its diversity, richness, composition, and functional patterns. The active bacterial richness was more sensitive than fungal richness. However, the adverse effects of the biocide combination treatments on soil bacterial richness were highly dependent on the identities of the biocide combination. Our results demonstrate that the presence of biocides frequently used in building materials affects the active soil microbiome. Thereby, the approach described herein can be used as an ecotoxicological measure for the effect on complex soil environments in future studies.

Eluates from façades at the beginning of their service time affect aquatic and sediment organisms

Biocides are used in building materials to prevent microbial growth during storage (in-can preservatives) as well as after application (film preservatives). These compounds can leach out from the material into the environment and harm non-target organisms. In this study, the ecotoxicological effect of leachates at the beginning of a façade lifetime, on sediment and aquatic organisms was examined. For this purpose, leaching tests were carried out in the setting of a natural weathering experiment and a laboratory immersion with façade samples consisting of render/paint systems. The leaching experiments were performed with three different formulations, namely no biocides containing control, a formulation containing only in-can preservatives (benzisothiazolinone (BIT), methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT), and methylisothiazolinone (MIT)), and, as is common in organic building materials, containing both in-can and film preservatives (octylisothiazolinone (OIT) and terbutryn (TB)). In order to elucidate the effects of in-can and film preservative-containing eluates the toxicity of the generated leachables was evaluated on the model of several aquatic and sediment organisms, namely luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), green algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus), Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 (umu-test), fish-egg (Danio rerio), Chironomus riparius, and Lumbriculus variegatus. It was demonstrated that in-can preservatives leach out rapidly at the beginning of a façade lifetime and despite the short half-life of these compounds in aqueous solutions, they could be detected at high concentrations in the eluates. Furthermore, eluates from early sampling times, predominantly containing in-can preservatives, were found to cause toxic effects on sediment and aquatic organisms. The results demonstrate that in-can preservatives can impose a significant stress factor on the environment.

Contrasted Antibiotics and Pesticides Occurrence in Fish Exposed In Situ to Urban Effluents: A 20-Day Caging Experiment

Urban freshwater ecosystems receive a wide array of organic pollutants through wastewater-treatment plant (WWTP) discharges and agricultural runoff. Evaluating the fate and effects of antibiotics and pesticides can be a challenging task, especially the effects on freshwater vertebrates because of their abilities to metabolize and excrete these chemicals and because of their high mobility and escape behavior when exposed to stressful environmental conditions. In the present study, 37 wild gudgeons (Gobio gobio) were caged for a period of up to 20 days, upstream and downstream of a WWTP effluent discharge in the Orge River (a tributary of the Seine River, France). Levels of pesticides and antibiotics in fish muscles were monitored weekly and compared with environmental contamination (water and sediments). Our results highlighted a slight bioaccumulation of pesticides in the gudgeon muscles at the downstream site after 20 days of exposure. Concerning antibiotics, ofloxacin was the most detected compound in fish muscles (85% of occurrence) and ranged from undetectable to 8 ng g-1  dry weight. Antibiotic levels in fish muscle were not higher at the downstream site and did not increase with exposure duration, despite high levels in the water (up to 29 times greater than upstream). Potential ecotoxicological effects were also evaluated: Body condition did not differ between the caging location and exposure time. Three oxidative status markers in the fish livers showed significant shifts after 14 days of caging. Our results suggest a high clearance rate of antibiotics and, to a lesser extent, of pesticides in wild gudgeons, which could be explained by changes in xenobiotic metabolism with pollutant exposure. Changes in chemical occurrence, concentration, and bioactivity in the Colorado River before and after replacement of the Moab, Utah wastewater treatment plant

Long-term (2010-19) water-quality monitoring on the Colorado River downstream from Moab Utah indicated the persistent presence of Bioactive Chemicals (BC), such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals. This stream reach near Canyonlands National Park provides critical habitat for federally endangered species. The Moab wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) outfall discharges to the Colorado River and is the nearest potential point-source to this reach. The original WWTP was replaced in 2018. In 2016-19, a study was completed to determine if the new plant reduced BC input to the Colorado River at, and downstream from, the outfall. Water samples were collected before and after the plant replacement at sites upstream and downstream from the outfall. Samples were analyzed for as many as 243 pesticides, 109 pharmaceuticals, 20 hormones, 51 wastewater indicator chemicals, 20 metals, and 8 nutrients. BC concentrations, hazard quotients (HQs), and exposure activity ratios (EARs) were used to identify and prioritize contaminants for their potential to have adverse biological effects on the health of native and endangered wildlife. There were 22 BC with HQs >1, mostly metals and hormones; and 23 BC with EARs >0.1, mostly hormones and pharmaceuticals. Most high HQs or EARs were associated with samples collected at the WWTP outfall site prior to its replacement. Discharge from the new plant had reduced concentrations of nutrients, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and other BC. For example, all 16 of the hormones detected at the WWTP outfall site had maximum concentrations in samples collected prior to the WWTP replacement. The WWTP replacement had less effect on instream concentrations of metals and pesticides, BC whose sources are less directly tied to domestic wastewater. Study results indicate that improved WWTP technology can create substantial reductions in concentrations of non-regulated BC such as pharmaceuticals, in addition to regulated contaminants such as nutrients.

Innovative approaches to accurately assess the effectiveness of biocide-based treatments to fight biodeterioration of Cultural Heritage monuments

The development of diagnostic methods to accurately assess the effects of treatments on lithobiont colonization remains a challenge for the conservation of Cultural Heritage monuments. In this study, we tested the efficacy of biocide-based treatments on microbial colonization of a dolostone quarry, in the short and long-term, using a dual analytical strategy. We applied a metabarcoding approach to characterize fungal and bacterial communities over time, integrated with microscopy techniques to analyze the interactions of microorganisms with the substrate and evaluate the effectiveness. These communities were dominated by the bacterial phyla Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria, and the fungal order Verrucariales, which include taxa previously reported as biodeteriogenic agents and observed here associated with biodeterioration processes. Following the treatments, changes over time in the abundance profiles depend on taxa. While Cyanobacteriales, Cytophagales and Verrucariales decreased in abundance, other groups, such as Solirubrobacteriales, Thermomicrobiales and Pleosporales increased. These patterns could be related not only to the specific effects of the biocide on the different taxa, but also to different recolonization abilities of those organisms. The different susceptibility to treatments could be associated with the inherent cellular properties of different taxa, but differences in biocide penetration to endolithic microhabitats could be involved. Our results demonstrate the importance of both removing epilithic colonization and applying biocides to act against endolithic forms. Recolonization processes could also explain some of the taxon-dependent responses, especially in the long-term. Taxa showing resistance, and those benefiting from nutrient accumulation in the form of cellular debris following treatments, may have an advantage in colonizing treated areas, pointing to the need for long-term monitoring of a wide range of taxa. This study highlights the potential utility of combining metabarcoding and microscopy to analyze the effects of treatments and design appropriate strategies to combat biodeterioration and establish preventive conservation protocols.

Emissions of the Urban Biocide Terbutryn from Facades: The Contribution of Transformation Products

Biocides are added to facade paints and renders to prevent algal and fungal growth. The emissions of biocides and their transformation products from building facades during wind-driven rain can contaminate surface waters, soil, and groundwater. Although the emissions of biocide transformation products may be higher than those of the parent biocide, knowledge of the emissions of transformation products over time is scarce. Combining field- and lab-scale experiments, we showed that solar irradiation on facades controls the formation of transformation products and can be used with runoff volume to estimate the long-term emissions of terbutryn transformation products from facades. The slow (t1/2 > 90 d) photodegradation of terbutryn in paint under environmental conditions was associated with insignificant carbon isotope fractionation (Δδ13C < 2 ‰) and caused 20% higher emission of terbutryn-sulfoxide than terbutryn in leachates from facades. This indicated continuous terbutryn diffusion toward the paint surface, which favored terbutryn photodegradation and the concomitant formation of transformation products over time. The emissions of terbutryn transformation products (77 mg m-2) in facade leachates, modeled based on irradiation and facade runoff, were predicted to exceed those of terbutryn (42 mg m-2) by nearly 2-fold after eight years. Overall, this study provides a framework to estimate and account for the long-term emissions of biocide transformation products from building facades to improve the assessment of environmental risks.

Variation of Tolerance to Isothiazolinones Among Daphnia pulex Clones

Isothiazolinones are a family of broad-spectrum biocides widely used in industry and consumer products. Chloro- and methyl-isothiazolinones (CMIT and MIT) are documented as strong irritants, yet they are still used in a wide variety of applications, including cosmetics, cleansers, hygienic products, and various industrial applications. The subsequent substantial release of these molecules from urban sources into freshwater environments, and their potential impacts on aquatic species, have nevertheless received little attention so far, with few studies reporting on the toxicity of either CMIT or MIT to nontarget organisms. The present study addresses this current knowledge gap by evaluating the acute toxicity to Daphnia pulex (Cladocera) of CMIT/MIT (3:1) and MIT, the two formulations most commonly used by manufacturers. In addition, genetic diversity is known to be a major component of variability in phenotypic responses, although it is largely overlooked in typical toxicity tests. Thus the potential range of responses inherent to genetic diversity is rarely considered. Therefore, to account for intraspecific variations in sensitivity, our design involved eight clonal lines of D. pulex stemming from distinct natural populations or commercial strains. Clones exhibited strong variation in their responses, with median lethal concentration (LC50) values ranging from 0.10 to 1.84 mg/L for the mixture CMIT/MIT, and from 0.68 to 2.84 mg/L for MIT alone. These intraspecific ranges of LC50 values challenge the use of single clones of daphnids in standard ecotoxicological tests and the predictions based on their results. The present study brings new evidence that assessing ecological risk of chemicals while ignoring genotype diversity is neither ecologically relevant, nor a representative evaluation of the diversity of potential adverse outcomes. Stochastic Dynamic Mass Spectrometric Quantitative and Structural Analyses of Pharmaceutics and Biocides in Biota and Sewage Sludge

Mass spectrometric innovations in analytical instrumentation tend to be accompanied by the development of a data-processing methodology, expecting to gain molecular-level insights into real-life objects. Qualitative and semi-quantitative methods have been replaced routinely by precise, accurate, selective, and sensitive quantitative ones. Currently, mass spectrometric 3D molecular structural methods are attractive. As an attempt to establish a reliable link between quantitative and 3D structural analyses, there has been developed an innovative formula [DSD″,tot=∑inDSD″,i=∑in2.6388.10−17×Ii2¯−Ii¯2] capable of the exact determination of the analyte amount and its 3D structure. It processed, herein, ultra-high resolution mass spectrometric variables of paracetamol, atenolol, propranolol, and benzalkonium chlorides in biota, using mussel tissue and sewage sludge. Quantum chemistry and chemometrics were also used. Results: Data on mixtures of antibiotics and surfactants in biota and the linear dynamic range of concentrations 2–80 ng.(mL)−1 and collision energy CE = 5–60 V are provided. Quantitative analysis of surfactants in biota via calibration equation ln[D″SD] = f(conc.) yields the exact parameter |r| = 0.99991, examining the peaks of BAC-C12 at m/z 212.209 ± 0.1 and 211.75 ± 0.15 for tautomers of fragmentation ions. Exact parameter |r| = 1 has been obtained, correlating the theory and experiments in determining the 3D molecular structures of ions of paracetamol at m/z 152, 158, 174, 301, and 325 in biota.

Contamination Pattern and Risk Assessment of Polar Compounds in Snow Melt: An Integrative Proxy of Road Runoffs

To assess the contamination and potential risk of snow melt with polar compounds, road and background snow was sampled during a melting event at 23 sites at the city of Leipzig and screened for 489 chemicals using liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry with target screening. Additionally, six 24 h composite samples were taken from the influent and effluent of the Leipzig wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) during the snow melt event. 207 compounds were at least detected once (concentrations between 0.80 ng/L and 75 μg/L). Consistent patterns of traffic-related compounds dominated the chemical profile (58 compounds in concentrations from 1.3 ng/L to 75 μg/L) and among them were 2-benzothiazole sulfonic acid and 1-cyclohexyl-3-phenylurea from tire wear and denatonium used as a bittern in vehicle fluids. Besides, the analysis unveiled the presence of the rubber additive 6-PPD and its transformation product N-(1.3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6-PPDQ) at concentrations known to cause acute toxicity in sensitive fish species. The analysis also detected 149 other compounds such as food additives, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Several biocides were identified as major risk contributors, with a more site-specific occurrence, to acute toxic risks to algae (five samples) and invertebrates (six samples). Ametryn, flumioxazin, and 1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester are the main compounds contributing to toxic risk for algae, while etofenprox and bendiocarb are found as the main contributors for crustacean risk. Correlations between concentrations in the WWTP influent and flow rate allowed us to discriminate compounds with snow melt and urban runoff as major sources from other compounds with other dominant sources. Removal rates in the WWTP showed that some traffic-related compounds were largely eliminated (removal rate higher than 80%) during wastewater treatment and among them was 6-PPDQ, while others persisted in the WWTP.

The Impact of Weather Conditions on Biocides in Paints

Weather conditions affect biocides on exposed outer surfaces on constructions. Contact with water causes hydrolysis and leaching of substances. Ultraviolet radiation may induce photolysis. As a result, a mixture of biocidal active substances and transformation products can be emitted into the environment. In a semi-field study, leaching of the biocidal active substances terbutryn, diuron, octylisothiazolinone, carbendazim, and selected transformation products was observed for two paints containing either a white or a red pigment. Painted test panels were exposed to natural weathering for about 1.5 years. Runoff samples were analyzed during the course of the experiment. At the end of the study, residues of biocidal active substances and transformation products were determined in sections of the test panels. Emissions of substances were mainly observed during the first few months of the experiments. Increased emissions of transformation products were observed during periods of increased global radiation and subsequent periods with relatively high amounts of driving rain. Different patterns of transformation products were observed, especially for terbutryn, both for paints containing different pigments and in experiments that were started in different periods of the year, as well as during different periods of the experiments.

Rapid plant uptake of isothiazolinone biocides and formation of metabolites by hydroponic Arabidopsis

Isothiazolinones biocides are water-soluble, low molecular weight, nitrogenous compounds widely used to prevent microbial growth in a variety of applications including personal care products and building façade materials. Because isothiazolinones from buildings wash off and enter stormwater, interactions with terrestrial plants may represent an important part of the environmental fate of these compounds (e.g., in green stormwater infrastructure). Using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana grown hydroponically, we observed rapid (≥99% within 24 hours), plant-driven removal of four commonly used isothiazolinones: benzisothiazolinone (BIT), chloromethylisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, and octylisothiazolinone. No significant differences in uptake rate occurred between the four compounds; therefore, BIT was used for further detailed investigation. BIT uptake by Arabidopsis was concentration-dependent in a manner that implicates transporter-mediated substrate inhibition. BIT uptake was also minimally impacted by multiple BIT spikes, suggesting constituently active uptake. BIT plant uptake rate was robust, unaffected by multiple inhibitors. We investigated plant metabolism as a relevant removal process. Proposed major metabolites that significantly increased in the BIT-exposure treatment compared to the control included: endogenous plant compounds nicotinic acid (confirmed with a reference standard) and phenylthioacetohydroximic acid, a possible amino acid-BIT conjugate, and two accurate masses of interest. Two of the compounds (phenylthioacetohydroximic acid and TP 470) were also present in increased amounts in the hydroponic medium after BIT exposure, possibly via plant excretion. Upregulation of endogenous plant compounds is environmentally significant because it demonstrates that BIT impacts plant biology. The rapid plant-driven isothiazolinone removal observed here indicates that plant-isothiazolinone processes could be relevant to the environmental fate of these stormwater compounds.

Occurrence of azole and strobilurin fungicides in indoor dust from three cities of China

Widespread use of fungicides has raised the concern of exposure to them among the general population. However, there are extremely limited studies reporting the occurrence of fungicides in indoor dust in China. This study aimed to determine ten agricultural fungicides in indoor dust samples collected in three cities of China from 2016 to 2019, assess spatial and seasonal variations, and estimate the related exposure via dust ingestion. Six out of ten fungicides including difenoconazole, prochloraz, tebuconazole, tricyclazole, azoxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin were frequently detected in the dust samples (ranged 65.8-97.7%) and the concentrations of some fungicides showed a strong correlation with each other. Difenoconazole was the most abundant one among the selected fungicides. The highest level of the selected fungicides was observed in the indoor dust collected from Wuhan in summer 2019 (median cumulative concentration of the fungicides: 62.6 ng/g), while the relatively low concentrations of fungicides were found in the dust from Taiyuan (2.08 ng/g). Heavier fungicide contamination was observed in urban districts compared to that in rural districts. Seasonal variations in the fungicide residuals were also identified. The exposure assessment suggested that intake of the selected fungicides via dust ingestion was much lower than dietary intake reported in other studies. This study filled the data gap of fungicide residuals in the indoor dust in China and further studies are needed to identify the sources and determinants of indoor fungicide contamination.

Interaction of heavy metals and biocide/herbicide from stormwater runoff of buildings with dissolved organic matter

Stormwater runoff from roofs and façades can be contaminated by heavy metals and biocides/herbicides. High efficiency on-site treatment methods are now urgently needed to safeguard the ecosystem. The basis for developing such treatment facilities is an in-depth understanding of their interactions with dissolved organic matter (DOM), as this affects their migration in the environment. Hence, the interactions between copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), benzyl-dimethyl-tetradecylammonium chloride dihydrate (BAC), mecoprop-P (MCPP) and DOM at pH 5 to 9 were investigated separately in this study. The evaluation of the interaction processes was achieved by applying excitation emission matrix and parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) to titration samples; obtained data were fitted by two different models. Mechanisms involved in BAC/MCPP-DOM interactions were revealed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and two-dimensional correlation spectrum (2D-COS) analysis. Results showed that the applied DOM was composed of the two different fluorescent components C1 and C2. More interaction with C1 than with C2 was observed for both Cu/Zn and BAC/MCPP. Increasing the pH enhanced the interactions between Cu/Zn and DOM. At pH 5 with a maximum quencher addition, the remaining fluorescence of CuC1 and ZnC1 were 15.7% and 87.1%, respectively. Corresponding data at pH 9 decreased to 3% and 69.5%. Contrarily, interactions between BAC/MCPP and DOM were impaired by high pH conditions. The increase of pH from 5 to 9 with maximum BAC and MCPP added raised the remaining fluorescence of BAC-C1 and MCPP-C1 by 15.9% and 21.3% separately. The fitting outcomes from the Ryan-Weber equation (Cu/Zn titration) and the Stern-Volmer equation (BAC/MCPP titration) corresponded well with the titration studies. FTIR coupled with 2D-COS analysis revealed that mechanisms involved in BAC/MCPP titration include hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, and electrostatic effect. The order of mechanisms taking effect during the interaction with DOM is affected by the molecular structure of BAC and MCPP.

Diffusive model to assess the release of chemicals from a material under intermittent release conditions

We consider the archetype situation of a chemical species that diffuses in a material and irreversibly escapes through the interface. In our setup, the interface switches between two states corresponding to ‘release phase’ (absorbing boundary) during which the species is released to the exterior, and ‘pause phase’ (reflecting boundary) during which the species is not released and its concentration profile inside the material partially relaxes back to uniformity. By combining numerical solution of the diffusion equation and statistical analysis of the outcomes, we derive upper and lower bounds and an empirical approximation for the amount of species released up to a certain time, in which the only information about the release-pause alternation schedule is the number of release phases and the average duration of a release phase. The methodology is developed thinking especially to dermal exposure assessment in the case of a slab-like homogeneous material irreversibly releasing chemicals during a number of contacts. However, upon proper extensions, this approach might be useful for inspecting other situations that are encountered, for instance, when dealing with leakage of chemicals in environmental contexts and regulatory toxicology.

Environmental Impact of Construction Products on Aquatic Systems—Principles of an Integrated Source–Path–Target Concept

Buildings exposed to water can release undesirable substances which, once transported to environmental compartments, may cause unwanted effects. These exposure pathways need to be investigated and included in risk assessments to safeguard water quality and promote the sustainability of construction materials. The applied materials, exposure conditions, distribution routes and resilience of receiving compartments vary considerably. This demonstrates the need for a consistent concept that integrates knowledge of emission sources, leaching processes, transport pathways, and effects on targets. Such a consistent concept can serve as the basis for environmental risk assessment for several scenarios using experimentally determined emissions. Typically, a source–path–target concept integrates data from standardized leaching tests and models to describe leaching processes, the distribution of substances in the environment and the occurrence of substances at different points of compliance. This article presents an integrated concept for assessing the environmental impact of construction products on aquatic systems and unravels currently existing gaps and necessary actions. This manuscript outlines a source–path–target concept applicable to a large variety of construction products. It is intended to highlight key elements of a holistic evaluation concept that could assist authorities in developing procedures for environmental risk assessments and mitigation measures and identifying knowledge gaps.

Current and future chemical treatments to fight biodeterioration of outdoor building materials and associated biofilms: Moving away from ecotoxic and towards efficient, sustainable solutions

All types of building materials are rapidly colonized by microorganisms, initially through an invisible and then later a visible biofilm that leads to their biodeterioration. Over centuries, this natural phenomenon has been managed using mechanical procedures, oils, or even wax. In modern history, many treatments such as high-pressure cleaners, biocides (mainly isothiazolinones and quaternary ammonium compounds) are commercially available, as well as preventive ones, such as the use of water-repellent coatings in the fabrication process. While all these cleaning techniques offer excellent cost-benefit ratios, their limitations are numerous. Indeed, building materials are often quickly recolonized after application, and microorganisms are increasingly reported as resistant to chemical treatments. Furthermore, many antifouling compounds are ecotoxic, harmful to human health and the environment, and new regulations tend to limit their use and constrain their commercialization. The current state-of-the-art highlights an urgent need to develop innovative antifouling strategies and the widespread use of safe and eco-friendly solutions to biodeterioration. Interestingly, innovative approaches and compounds have recently been identified, including the use of photocatalysts or natural compounds such as essential oils or quorum sensing inhibitors. Most of these solutions developed in laboratory settings appear very promising, although their efficiency and ecotoxicological features remain to be further tested before being widely marketed. This review highlights the complexity of choosing the adequate antifouling compounds when fighting biodeterioration and proposes developing case-to-case innovative strategies to raise this challenge, relying on integrative and multidisciplinary approaches.

Continuous high-frequency pesticide monitoring to observe the unexpected and the overlooked

Synthetic Plant Protection Products (PPPs) are a key element for a large part of today's global food systems. However, the transport of PPPs and their transformation products (TPs) to water bodies has serious negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. Small streams in agricultural catchments may experience pronounced concentration peaks given the proximity to fields and poor dilution capacity. Traditional sampling approaches often prevent a comprehensive understanding of PPPs and TPs concentration patterns being limited by trade-offs between temporal resolution and duration of the observation period. These limitations result in a knowledge gap for accurate ecotoxicological risk assessment and the achievement of optimal monitoring strategies for risk mitigation. We present here high-frequency PPPs and TPs concentration time-series measured with the autonomous MS²Field platform that combines continuous sampling and on-site measurements with a high-resolution mass spectrometer, which allows for overcoming temporal trade-offs. In a small agricultural catchment, we continuously measured 60 compounds at 20 minutes resolution for 41 days during the growing season. This observation period included 8 large and 15 small rain events and provided 2560 concentration values per compound. To identify similarities and differences among the compound-specific concentration time-series, we analysed the entire dataset with positive matrix factorisation. Six factors sufficiently captured the overall complexity in concentration dynamics. While one factor reflected dilution during rainfall, five factors identified PPPs groups that seemed to share a common history of recent applications. The investigation per event of the concentration time-series revealed a surprising complexity of dynamic patterns; physico-chemical properties of the compounds did not influence the (dis)similarity of chemographs. Some PPPs concentration peaks led while others lagged by several hours the water level peaks during large events. During small events, water level peaks always preceded concentration peaks, which were generally only observed when the water levels had almost receded to pre-event levels. Thus, monitoring schemes relying on rainfall or water level as proxies for triggering sampling may lead to systematic biases. The high temporal resolution revealed that the Swiss national monitoring integrating over 3.5 days underestimated critical concentration peaks by a factor of eight to more than 32, captured 3 out of 11 exceedances of legal acute quality standards (the relevant values in the Swiss Water Protection Law) and recorded 1 out of 9 exceedances of regulatory acceptable concentrations (the relevant values for the PPPs registration process). MS²Field allowed for observing unexpected and overlooked pesticide dynamics with consequences for further research but also for monitoring. The large variability in timing of concentration peaks relative to water level calls for more in-depth analyses regarding the respective transport mechanisms. To perform these analyses, spatially distributed sampling and time-series of geo-referenced PPPs application data are needed.

Application, release, ecotoxicological assessment of biocide in building materials and its soil microbial response

Biocides are used in building materials to protect the building against microbial colonization and biodeterioration. However, these biocides are introduced by gradual leaching into soils in proximity of the buildings. This review discusses the aspects and characteristics of biocides from building materials in terms of (i) in-situ leaching and simulation thereof in-vitro and in-field tests, (ii) persistence, as well as photolytic and biodegradation, and its influence on toxicological evaluation, and (iii) evaluation of terrestrial toxicity by conventional ecotoxicological tests and novel holistic testing approaches. These aspects are influenced by multiple parameters, out of which water availability, physicochemical properties of microhabitats, combination of biocidal building materials, soil parameters, and composition of the soil microbiome are of utmost relevance. Deeper understanding of this multiparametric system and development of comprehensive characterization methodologies remains crucial, as to facilitate realistic assessment of the environmental impact of biocides used in construction materials and the corresponding degradation byproducts.

Leaching and extraction of additives from plastic pollution to inform environmental risk: A multidisciplinary review of analytical approaches

Plastic pollution is prevalent worldwide and has been highlighted as an issue of global concern due to its harmful impacts on wildlife. The extent and mechanism by which plastic pollution effects organisms is poorly understood, especially for microplastics. One proposed mechanism by which plastics may exert a harmful effect is through the leaching of additives. To determine the risk to wildlife, the chemical identity and exposure to additives must be established. However, there are few reports with disparate experimental approaches. In contrast, a breadth of knowledge on additive release from plastics is held within the food, pharmaceutical and medical, construction, and waste management industries. This includes standardised methods to perform migration, extraction, and leaching studies. This review provides an overview of the approaches and methods used to characterise additives and their leaching behaviour from plastic pollution. The limitations of these methods are highlighted and compared with industry standardised approaches. Furthermore, an overview of the analytical strategies for the identification and quantification of additives is presented. This work provides a basis for refining current leaching approaches and analytical methods with a view towards understanding the risk of plastic pollution.

Urban storm water infiltration systems are not reliable sinks for biocides: evidence from column experiments

Groundwater quality in urban catchments is endangered by the input of biocides, such as those used in facade paints to suppress algae and fungal growth and washed off by heavy rainfall. Their retention in storm water infiltration systems (SIS) depends, in addition to their molecular properties, on chemical properties and structure of the integrated soil layer. These soil properties change over time and thus possibly also the relevance of preferential flow paths, e.g. due to ongoing biological activity. To investigate the mobility of biocides in SIS, we analyzed the breakthrough of differently adsorbing tracers (bromide, uranine, sulforhodamine B) and commonly used biocides (diuron, terbutryn, octhilinone) in laboratory column experiments of undisturbed soil cores of SIS, covering ages from 3 to 18 years. Despite similar soil texture and chemical soil properties, retention of tracers and biocides differed distinctly between SIS. Tracer and biocide breakthrough ranged from 54% and 5%, to 96% and 54%, respectively. We related the reduced solute retention to preferential transport in macropores as could be confirmed by brilliant blue staining. Our results suggest an increasing risk of groundwater pollution with increasing number of macropores related to biological activity and the age of SIS.

Contamination of Urban Stormwater Pond Sediments: A Study of 259 Legacy and Contemporary Organic Substances

Stormwater ponds improve water quality by facilitating the sedimentation of particles and particulate contaminants from urban runoff. Over time, this function entails the accumulation of contaminated sediments, which must be removed periodically to maintain a pond's hydraulic and treatment capacity. In this study, sediments from 17 stormwater sedimentation facilities from four Swedish municipalities were analyzed for 259 organic substances likely to be found in the urban environment. A total of 92 substances were detected in at least one sample, while as many as 52 substances were detected in a single sample. A typical profile of urban contamination was identified, including polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organotins, aliphatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, aldehydes, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, perfluorinated substances, and alkylphenols. However, levels of contamination varied greatly between ponds, influenced heavily by the dilution of urban pollutants and wear particles from other sources of particles such as eroded soil, sand, or natural organic matter. For 22 of 32 samples, the observed concentrations of at least one organic substance exceeded the regulatory threshold values derived from toxicity data for both sediment and soil.

Urban pathways of biocides towards surface waters during dry and wet weathers: Assessment at the Paris conurbation scale

Eighteen biocides used in building materials and domestic products were monitored in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) during dry weather and in combined sewer overflows (CSOs) during wet weather in the Paris conurbation. The aims of this study were to (i) acquire data on biocides in urban waters, which are very scarce up to now, (ii) identify their origins in CSOs with the perspective of reducing these contaminants at source, and (iii) compare and rank biocide pathways to the river (dry vs. wet weather) at the annual and conurbation scales. The results showed the ubiquity of the 18-targeted biocides in WWTP waters and CSOs. High concentrations of methylisothiazolinone, benzisothiazolinone (0.2-0.9 μg/L) and benzalkonium C12 (0.5-6 μg/L) were measured in wastewater. Poor WWTP removals (< 50 %) were observed for most of the biocides. Both wastewater (mainly domestic uses) and stormwater (leaching from building materials) contributed to the CSO contamination. However, benzisothiazolinone mainly came from wastewater whereas diuron, isoproturon, terbutryn, carbendazim, tebuconazole, and mecoprop mainly came from stormwater. Annual mass loads discharged by WWTPs and CSOs into the Seine River were estimated using a stochastic approach (Monte Carlo simulations) at the conurbation scale and showed that WWTP discharges are the major entry pathway.

Emerging polar pollutants in groundwater: Potential impact of urban stormwater infiltration practices

The quality of groundwater (GW) resources is decreasing partly due to chemical contaminations from a wide range of activities, such as industrial and agricultural enterprises and changes in land-use. In urban areas, one potential major pathway of GW contamination is associated with urban water management practices based on stormwater runoff infiltration systems (SIS). Data on the performance of the upper layer of soil and the unsaturated zone of infiltration basins to limit the contamination of GW by hydrophilic compounds are lacking. With this aim, the impact of infiltration practices on GW contamination was assessed for 12 pesticides and 4 pharmaceuticals selected according to their ecotoxicological relevance and their likelihood of being present in urban stormwater and GW. For this purpose, 3 campaigns were conducted at 4 SIS during storm events. For each campaign, passive samplers based on the use of Empore™ disk were deployed in GW wells upstream and downstream of SIS, as well as in the stormwater runoff entering the infiltration basins. Upstream and downstream GW contaminations were compared to evaluate the potential effect of SIS on GW contamination and possible relationships with stormwater runoff composition were examined. Our results showed two interesting opposite trends: (i) carbendazim, diuron, fluopyram, imidacloprid and lamotrigine had concentrations significantly increasing in GW impacted by infiltration, indicating a contribution of SIS to GW contamination, (ii) atrazine, simazine and 2 transformation products exhibited concentrations significantly decreasing with infiltration due to a probable dilution of historic GW contaminants with infiltrated stormwater runoff. The other 7 contaminants showed no general trend. This study demonstrates that passive samplers deployed in GW wells enabled the capture of emerging polar pollutants present at very low concentrations and allowed the assessment of infiltration practices on GW quality. New data on GW and urban stormwater are provided for poorly studied hazardous compounds.

Microfluidic Encapsulation of Hydrophobic Antifouling Biocides in Calcium Alginate Hydrogels for Controllable Release

Microencapsulation of biocides is used in long-life antifouling coating paints for marine applications and building materials. Here, we report the microfluidic production of calcium alginate (Ca-alginate) hydrogel particles to modulate the release of the encapsulated drug Irgarol (N-cyclopropyl-N'-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-(methylthio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), which is a hydrophobic and specifically phytotoxic antifoulant that inhibits photosystem II in aquatic plant species. We first encapsulated the drug inside the highly spherical Ca-alginate hydrogels of an average diameter ∼160 μm with a coefficient of variation of less than 4% and an average roundness of more than 0.96. The release speeds of the encapsulated and nonencapsulated drugs in pure water were measured separately by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. A stable and controllable release rate of the loaded drug was achieved by hydrophilic encapsulation. In addition, cellulose fibers were incorporated to enhance the mechanical strength of the hydrogels. Finally, the antifouling effect of the encapsulated drug was demonstrated using water grass (Bacopa monnieri).

Influence of façade orientation on the leaching of biocides from building façades covered with mortars and plasters

Biocides used in building façades to prevent potential growth of algae, fungi and bacteria are of major concern regarding the quality of stormwater runoff. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of the façade orientation on the biocide release under real weather conditions to gain information for the development of on-site treatment systems. Field tests with model houses containing two different plaster compositions were carried out over a period of 18 months. The results of the analyzed rain events demonstrate that façade orientation plays an important role in the leaching loads of biocides. Biocide loads in the runoff decreased corresponding to the wind direction. High cumulated active substance discharges of diuron (149 mg/m²), carbendazim (43.5 mg/m²), terbutryn (9.3 mg/m²) and octylisothiazolinone (OIT) (31.9 mg/m²) were found in the runoff of the façades facing the predominant weather orientation. Meanwhile, the highest concentrations of diuron (2.8 mg/L) and OIT (0.7 mg/L) were observed in the runoff from façades with smaller runoff volumes. The obtained results demonstrate that treatment facilities have to be installed at all building sides. The hydraulic and the substance load is highest at the weather side, which has a strong influence on the dimension and the lifetime of the treatment system.
