Mapping the landscape: A bibliometric perspective on autophagy in spinal cord injury

BACKGROUND

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe condition that often leads to persistent damage of nerve cells and motor dysfunction. Autophagy is an intracellular system that regulates the recycling and degradation of proteins and lipids, primarily through lysosomal-dependent organelle degradation. Numerous publications have highlighted the involvement of autophagy in the secondary injury of SCI. Therefore, gaining a comprehensive understanding of autophagy research is crucial for designing effective therapies for SCI.

METHODS

Dates were obtained from Web of Science, including articles and article reviews published from its inception to October 2023. VOSviewer, Citespace, and SCImago were used to visualized analysis. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science data, focusing on various categories such as publications, authors, journals, countries, organizations, and keywords. This analysis was aimed to summarize the knowledge map of autophagy and SCI.

RESULTS

From 2009 to 2023, the number of annual publications in this field exhibited wave-like growth, with the highest number of publications recorded in 2020 (44 publications). Our analysis identified Mei Xifan as the most prolific author, while Kanno H emerged as the most influential author based on co-citations. Neuroscience Letters was found to have published the largest number of papers in this field. China was the most productive country, contributing 232 publications, and Wenzhou Medical University was the most active organization, publishing 39 papers.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrated a comprehensive overview of the relationship between autophagy and SCI utilizing bibliometric tools. This article could help to enhance the understanding of the field about autophagy and SCI, foster collaboration among researchers and organizations, and identify potential therapeutic targets for treatment.

Research Hotspots and Development Trends on Apolipoprotein B in the Field of Atherosclerosis: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases caused by atherosclerosis (AS) are the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), the core protein of low-density lipoproteins, is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality, with apolipoprotein B (ApoB) playing a critical role in its pathogenesis. However, no bibliometric studies on the involvement of ApoB in AS have been published. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to explore the current and future trends regarding the role of ApoB in AS.

METHODS

Utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection, a thorough search was conducted for ApoB in AS-related papers related to research on ApoB in the field of AS during 1991-2023. The analysis focused on annual publication trends, leading countries/regions and institutions, influential authors, journal and key journals. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were employed to visualize reference co-citations, and keyword co-occurrences, offering insights into the research landscape and emerging trends.

RESULTS

This bibliometric analysis employed network diagrams for cluster analysis of a total of 2105 articles and reviews, evidencing a discernible upward trend in annual publication volume. This corpus of research emanates from 76 countries/regions and 2343 organizations, illustrating the widespread international engagement in ApoB-related AS studies. Notably, the United States and the University of California emerge as the most prolific contributors, which underscores their pivotal roles in advancing this research domain. The thematic investigation has increasingly focused on elucidating the mechanistic involvement of ApoB in atherosclerosis, its potential as a diagnostic biomarker, and its implications for therapeutic strategies.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provides the first comprehensive perspective on the evolving promise of ApoB in AS-related research, emphasizing the importance of this molecule in opening up new diagnostic and therapeutic avenues. This study emphasizes the need for continued research and interdisciplinary efforts to strengthen the fight against AS. Furthermore, it emphasizes the critical role of international collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration in leveraging new insights to achieve clinical breakthroughs, thereby addressing the complexities of AS by focusing on ApoB.

Current research status and future prospects of NLRP3 inflammasome in cardiovascular diseases: a bibliometric and visualization analysis

Background

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of global mortality, with atherosclerosis (AS) contributing to its pathological basis. Inflammation plays a critical role in the pathophysiological process of AS, and the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome has been extensively studied in this context. This study aimed to analyze the research status of the NLRP3 inflammasome in cardiovascular disease and provide research directions for further exploration in this field.

Methods

Using the "Bibliometrix" and "CiteSpace" software, a total of 516 articles were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database published between 2012 and 2023. The search query used the keywords "["CVD" OR "cardiovascular disease"] AND ["NLRP3 inflammasome "OR "NLRP3"]". Visual analysis was performed on authors, countries, institutions, journal sources, keywords, references, and future trends.

Results

A total of 516 English articles were retrieved, showing an overall upward trend in annual publication volume with slight fluctuations. China, the United States, and Europe were the countries and regions with the highest number of published articles. Among them, China had the highest article count (170), while the United States had the highest citation count (18,664), centrality score (0.43), and h-index (90), indicating its influential role in this research area. These countries also possessed elite institutions, professional researchers, and high-impact journals, making them leading contributors in this field. The main pathogenic mechanisms of the NLRP3 inflammasome in CVD were identified as "oxidative stress", "pyroptosis", and "inflammation". The most frequently studied signaling pathways included "NF-κB", "IL-1", and "C-reactive protein". The most studied disease types were coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and myocardial infarction. Additionally, research on the correlation between cholesterol markers and inflammatory indicators associated with NLRP3 inflammasome in CVD risk assessment has gained significant momentum, with the main mechanism being NLRP3/IL-6/hs-CRP and cholesterol lipoproteins emerging as a major keyword in this context.

Conclusion

This study provides valuable insights into the research hotspots and emerging trends of the NLRP3 inflammasome in cardiovascular disease. The findings offer guidance for researchers and scholars in this field and facilitate the exploration of new research directions.

Research trends and hotspot analysis of age-related hearing loss: A bibliometric analysis from 2019 to 2023

BACKGROUND

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) - also termed presbycusis - is prevalent among older adults, leading to a range of issues. Although considerable progress in the understanding of ARHL over the decades, available reports lack data from recent years and do not comprehensively reflect the latest advancements and trends. Therefore, our study sought to assess research hotspots and trends in ARHL over the past 5 years to provide the basis for future research.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched and screened from January 1, 2019 to October 21, 2023, according to the inclusion criteria. CiteSpace (5.8.R3), VOSviewer (1.6.19), and Microsoft Excel 2019 were employed for bibliometric analysis and visualization.

RESULTS

3084 articles from 92 countries led by the United States and China were included. There has been a steady upward trend in the number of publications from 2019 to 2023. The most productive institutions, authors, and journals are Johns Hopkins University (n = 113), Lin FR (n = 66), and Ear and Hearing (n = 135), respectively. Trend topic analyses revealed that "cochlear synaptopathy" and "dementia" were the predominant foci. Keywords, including "individuals" and "national health", began to appear.

CONCLUSION

Over the past 5 years, the annual number of publications has increased significantly and will continue to do so. Research on the mechanism of ARHL, represented by "oxidative stress", is a continuing focus. Emerging topics such as "individual differences" and "national health" may be potential future hotspots in this field.

Mendelian randomization as a cornerstone of causal inference for gut microbiota and related diseases from the perspective of bibliometrics

Gut microbiota, a special group of microbiotas in the human body, contributes to health in a way that can't be ignored. In recent years, Mendelian randomization, which is a widely used and successful method of analyzing causality, has been investigated for the relationship between the gut microbiota and related diseases. Unfortunately, there seems to be a shortage of systematic bibliometric analysis in this field. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the research progress of Mendelian randomization for gut microbiota through comprehensive bibliometric analysis. In this study, publications about Mendelian randomization for gut microbiota were gathered from 2013 to 2023, utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection as our literature source database. The search strategies were as follows: TS = (intestinal flora OR gut flora OR intestinal microflora OR gut microflora OR intestinal microbiota OR gut microbiota OR bowel microbiota OR bowel flora OR gut bacteria OR intestinal tract bacteria OR bowel bacteria OR gut metabolites OR gut microbiota) and TS = (Mendelian randomization). VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), CiteSpace (version 6.1.R1), Microsoft Excel 2021, and Scimago Graphica were employed for bibliometric and visualization analysis. According to research, from January 2013 to August 2023, 154 publications on Mendelian randomization for gut microbiota were written by 1053 authors hailing from 332 institutions across 31 countries and published in 86 journals. China had the highest number of publications, with 109. Frontiers in Microbiology is the most prolific journal, and Lei Zhang has published the highest number of significant articles. The most popular keywords were "Mendelian randomization," "gut microbiota," "instruments," "association," "causality," "gut microbiome," "risk," "bias," "genome-wide association," and "causal relationship." Moreover, the current research hotspots in this field focus on utilizing a 2-sample Mendelian randomization to investigate the relationship between gut microbiota and associated disorders. This research systematically reveals a comprehensive overview of the literature that has been published over the last 10 years about Mendelian randomization for gut microbiota. Moreover, the knowledge of key information in the field from a bibliometric perspective may greatly facilitate future research in the field.

Bibliometric analysis of research in epilepsy and comorbid depression from 2014 to 2023

BACKGROUND

Epilepsy and depression have complicated bidirectional relationships. Our study aimed to explore the field of epilepsy comorbid with depression in a bibliometric perspective from 2014-2023.

AIM

To improve our understanding of epilepsy and depression by evaluating the relationship between epilepsy and depression, bibliometric analyses were performed.

METHODS

Epilepsy and depression-related publications from the last decade were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. We conducted bibliometric and visual analysis using VOSviewer and CiteSpace, examining authorships, countries, institutions, journals of publication, co-citations of references, connections between keywords, clusters of keywords, and keywords with citation bursts.

RESULTS

Over the past ten years, we collected 1045 research papers focusing on the field of epilepsy and comorbid depression. Publications on epilepsy and depression have shown a general upward trend over time, though with some fluctuations. The United States, with 287 articles, and the University of Melbourne, contributing 34 articles, were the top countries and institutions, respectively. In addition, in the field of epilepsy and depression, Professor Lee, who has published 30 articles, was the most contributing author. The hot topics pay attention to the quality of life in patients with epilepsy and depression.

CONCLUSION

We reported that quality of life and stigma in patients with epilepsy comorbid with depression are possible future hot topics and directions in the field of epilepsy and depression research.

Mapping the current trends and hotspots of adult hippocampal neurogenesis from 2004-2023: a bibliometric analysis

Objective

We utilized bibliometric and data visualization techniques to discern the primary research domains and emerging frontiers in the field of adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN).

Methods

We systematically searched the Web of Science database for AHN-related articles published between 2004 and 2023. The retrieved articles were filtered based on publication types (articles and reviews) and language (English). We employed CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the online bibliometric platform (bibliometric.com) to visualize and analyze the collected data.

Results

In total, 1,590 AHN-related publications were discovered, exhibiting a steady increase in yearly publications over time. The United States emerged as the leading contributor in AHN research in terms of both publication quantity and national influence. Among all research institutions in the field of AHN, the University of California System exhibited the highest impact. Kempermann, Gerd was the most active author. The publications of the top three active authors primarily focused on the functions of AHN, and reversing hippocampal damage and cognitive impairment by improving AHN. An analysis of reference co-citation clustering revealed 8 distinct research clusters, and the notable ones included "adult hippocampal neurogenesis," "neurogenesis," "hippocampus," "dentate gyrus," "neural stem cell," and "depression." Additionally, a burst keyword detection indicated that 'anxiety' is a current research hotspot in the field of AHN.

Conclusion

This in-depth bibliographic assessment of AHN offers a deeper insight into the present research hotspots in the field. The association between AHN and cognitive diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and anxiety, has emerged as a prominent research hotspot.

Hotspots and trends in health-oriented physical literacy research: a visual analysis based on the WOS database

BACKGROUND

The World Health Organization has proposed that physical activity is a meaningful way to improve the quality of human life and reduce the probability of chronic non-communicable diseases and that humans should change their mindset from the actual effectiveness of physical activity in promoting health to the new view that "physical activity makes life more meaningful." The introduction and development of physical literacy reveal the critical role of physical activity in improving human health and the importance of human initiative in physical activity for healthy development. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are (1) to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on physical literacy, assessing the scope, frequency, and geographical distribution of research publications from various countries and institutions from 2015 to 2023; (2) to visualize keywords in articles on the topic of Physical literacy to analyze whether there is a link between physical literacy and health, and (3) based on the results of the visual analysis, we propose that proper health is built on the sense of physical literacy and further construct the circular path of physical literacy, physical activity, and physical health improvement.

METHODS

Using VOSviewer software v.1.6.18, this study searched the core collection of the Web of Science database from 2015 to April 15, 2023, using "physical literacy" as a keyword to explore the current international research on physical literacy.

RESULTS

A total of 3,446 articles were included, and a correlation map was derived based on the co-occurrence frequency of keywords, which showed that physical literacy was highly correlated with six concepts: health literacy, physical activity, health, children, adolescents, and prevention.

CONCLUSION

Based on the analysis of literature visualization techniques, there is a high correlation between physical literacy and health, and international physical literacy research is in a trend of multi-point amplification, with research hotspots gradually shifting from the field of sports to the field of health and closely related to the field of health, indicating that physical literacy aims to promote the achievement of individual health by driving humans to increase physical activity.

Gut microbiota in insulin resistance: a bibliometric analysis

Background

Insulin resistance (IR) is considered the pathogenic driver of diabetes, and can lead to obesity, hypertension, coronary artery disease, metabolic syndrome, and other metabolic disorders. Accumulating evidence indicates that the connection between gut microbiota and IR. This bibliometric analysis aimed to summarize the knowledge structure of gut microbiota in IR.

Methods

Articles and reviews related to gut microbiota in IR from 2013 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), and the bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed by Microsoft Excel, Origin, R package (bibliometrix), Citespace, and VOSviewer.

Results

A total of 4 749 publications from WoSCC were retrieved, including 3 050 articles and 1 699 reviews. The majority of publications were from China and USA. The University Copenhagen and Shanghai Jiao Tong University were the most active institutions. The journal of Nutrients published the most papers, while Nature was the top 1 co-cited journal, and the major area of these publications was molecular, biology, and immunology. Nieuwdorp M published the highest number of papers, and Cani PD had the highest co-citations. Keyword analysis showed that the most frequently occurring keywords were "gut microbiota", "insulin-resistance", "obesity", and "inflammation". Trend topics and thematic maps showed that serum metabolome and natural products, such as resveratrol, flavonoids were the research hotspots in this field.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis summarised the hotspots, frontiers, pathogenesis, and treatment strategies, providing a clear and comprehensive profile of gut microbiota in IR.

Facial Rejuvenation: A Global Trend of Dermatological Procedures in the Last Decade

Background

We aimed to track the global trend of cosmetic treatment outcomes for facial rejuvenation and the differences in modalities used in East Asian and Western populations.

Methods

Articles reporting on facial rejuvenation procedures (invasive/noninvasive) were identified in PubMed from 2013 to March 2023 and bibliometrically analyzed for type of published document, citation frequency, authors with most articles, author's affiliation, and frequency distribution of keywords.

Results

From 553 articles, most were published in 2021 (n = 86, 15.6%). Western countries (n = 323, 58.4%) contributed more than East Asian (n = 230, 41.6%), with more invasive interventions (n = 355, 64.2%) than noninvasive techniques (n = 198, 35.8%). Numbers of invasive techniques in West versus East Asian countries were 225 (40.7%) versus 135 (24.4%). Main indications were the reduction of facial wrinkles and antiageing treatments. Hyaluronic acid, fillers, and botulinum toxin were the main hotspots for invasive treatments, whereas laser, platelet-rich plasma, and radiofrequency were for noninvasive treatments. Nasolabial folds (13.4%) and glabellar lines (12.4%) were the top research hotspots in the East Asian and Western regions. Common adverse events were pain, erythema, swelling, and bruising. Approximately, 89.3% of publications were from single countries, whereas 10.7% of publications were from international collaborations. Most articles (n = 387; 69.95%) presented their findings using level II evidence. Dermatological surgery (IF = 2.914) had the greatest number of publications (n = 109; 19.71%).

Conclusions

The main hotspots were antiaging and youthfulness. This study provides a trend and a new perspective on the future research directions in the field of facial rejuvenation.

Based on CiteSpace Insights into Illicium verum Hook. f. Current Hotspots and Emerging Trends and China Resources Distribution

Illicium verum Hook. f. is a globally significant spice, which is recognized in China as a food-medicine homolog and extensively utilized across the pharmaceutical, food, and spice industries. China boasts the world's leading resources of I. verum, yet its comprehensive utilization remains relatively underexplored. Through a resource survey of I. verum and the application of bibliometric visualization using CiteSpace, this study analyzed 324 papers published in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) from 1962 to 2023 and 353 core documents from China's three major databases (CNKI, Wanfang Database, and VIP Database). I. verum from Guangxi province towards various southern provinces in China, with autumn fruits exhibited superior quality and market value over their spring fruits. Literature in WOSCC emerged earlier, with a research emphasis on food science technology and pharmacology pharmacy domains. WOSCC research on I. verum could be divided into two phases: an embryonic period (1962-2001) and a growth period (2002-2023), showing an overall upward trend in publication. The three major Chinese databases contain a larger number of publications, with a focus on the food sector, which could be categorized into three stages: an embryonic period (1990-1999), a growth period (2000-2010), and a stable period (2011-2023), with an overall downward trend in publication. Both Chinese and international research hotspots converge on the medical applications of I. verum, with antioxidant bioactivity research emerging as a prevailing trend. This study delineated the resource distribution of I. verum across China and identified the research hotspots and trends both in China and internationally. The findings are beneficial for guiding researchers in swiftly establishing their research focus and furnishing decision-makers with a comprehensive reference for industry information.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of global research on microRNAs in gastric cancer: from 2013 to 2023

Gastric cancer (GC) imposes a heavy burden on global public health, and microRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of GC. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the hotspots and frontiers in the field of miRNAs in GC to guide future research. A total of 2,051 publications related to miRNAs in GC from January 2013 to December 2023 were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace was used to identify research hotspots and delineate developmental trends. In the past decade, China, Nanjing Medical University, and Ba Yi were the most contributing research country, institute, and author in this field, respectively. The role of miRNAs as biomarkers in GC, the mechanism of miRNAs in the progression of GC, and the impact of the mutual effects between miRNAs and Helicobacter pylori on GC have been regarded as the research hotspots. The mechanisms of miRNAs on glucose metabolism and the application of the roles of circular RNAs as miRNA sponges in GC treatment will likely be frontiers. Overall, this study called for strengthened cooperation to identify targets and therapeutic regimes for local specificity and high-risk GC types, and to promote the translation of research results into clinical practice.

Combined Nutrition with Exercise: Fueling the Fight Against Sarcopenia Through a Bibliometric Analysis and Review

Objective

This bibliometric analysis and review aimed to examine the current research status and trends in the combination of nutrition and exercise training for sarcopenia. Additionally, it sought to provide researchers with future research directions in this field.

Methods

Relevant publications were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, covering the period from January 1995 to October 2023. The collected publications were analyzed using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, Bibliometrix, and Review Manager.

Results

Out of the 2528 retrieved publications, the United States emerged as the leading contributor in terms of publication volume. The University of Texas System was identified as the most productive institution. Luc J C van Loon emerged as the most published author in this field. Analysis of keywords revealed recent hot topics and emerging areas of interest, such as "gut microbiota" and "mechanisms". Upon further evaluation, resistance training (RT) and protein supplementation were identified as the most commonly employed and effective methods.

Conclusion

RT and protein supplementation are widely recognized as effective strategies. Future research should focus on investigating the molecular aspects of sarcopenia. Moreover, the potential therapeutic role of gut microbiota in sarcopenia requires further comprehensive investigation in human subjects to establish its correlation.

Mapping knowledge landscapes and emerging trends of Marburg virus: A text-mining study

Background

Marburg virus (MARV), a close relative of Ebola virus, could induce hemorrhagic fevers in humans with high mortality rate. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to this highly lethal virus due to sporadic outbreaks observed in various African nations. This bibliometric analysis endeavors to elucidate the trends, dynamics, and focal points of knowledge that have delineated the landscape of research concerning MARV.

Methods

Relevant literature on MARV from 1968 to 2023 was extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Following this, the data underwent bibliometric analysis and visualization procedures utilizing online analysis platform, CiteSpace 6.2R6, and VOSviewer 1.6.20. Three different types of bibliometric indicators including quantitative indicator, qualitative indicators, and structural indicators were used to gauge a researcher's productivity, assess the quality of their work, and analyze publication relationships, respectively.

Results

MARV is mainly prevalent in Africa. And approximately 643 confirmed cases have been described in the literature to date, and mortality observed was 81.2 % in overall patients. A total of 1014 papers comprising 869 articles and 145 reviews were included. The annual publications showed an increasing growth pattern from 1968 to 2023 (R2 = 0.8838). The United States stands at the forefront of this discipline, having dedicated substantial financial and human resources to scientific inquiry. However, co-authorship analysis showed the international research collaboration needs to be further strengthened. Based on reference and keywords analysis, contemporary MARV research encompasses pivotal areas: primarily, prioritizing the creation of prophylactic vaccines to impede viral spread, and secondarily, exploring targeted antiviral strategies, including small-molecule antivirals or MARV-specific monoclonal antibodies. Additionally, a comprehensive grasp of viral transmission, transcription, and replication mechanisms remains a central focus in ongoing investigations. And future MARV studies are expected to focus on evaluating clinical trial safety and efficacy, developing inhibitors to contain viral spread, exploring vaccine immunogenicity, virus-host association studies, and elucidating the role of neutralizing antibodies in MARV treatment.

Conclusion

The present study offered comprehensive insights into the contemporary status and trajectories of MARV over the past decades. This enables researchers to discern novel collaborative prospects, institutional partnerships, emerging topics, and research forefronts within this domain.

Pre-sliding technique to improve femoral neck system against the shortening: a retrospective cohort study

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the efficacy of using pre-sliding technique to prevent postoperative shortening of displaced femoral neck fracture fixed with femoral neck system (FNS).

METHODS

Retrospective analysis of 110 cases of displaced femoral neck fracture treated with femoral neck system from September 2019 to November 2022 in our center, which were divided into 56 cases in the pre-sliding group and 54 cases in the traditional group. The baseline data such as gender, age, side, mechanism of injury, fracture type, operation time, intraoperative bleeding were recorded and compared between the two groups, and the quality of fracture reduction, shortening distance, Tip Apex Distance (TAD), union time, Harris score of the hip were also compared between the two groups.

RESULTS

The TAD value of the pre-sliding group was smaller than that of the traditional group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The shortening distance in both groups on postoperative day 1 was smaller in the pre-sliding group than in the traditional group, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.07), and the shortening distance was smaller than in the traditional group at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, and the difference was statistically significant (all P < 0.001). Of the 110 cases, 34 (30.9%) had moderate or severe shortening, of which 24 (44.4%) were in the traditional group and 10 (17.9%) in the pre-sliding group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001), and the Harris score at 1 year, which was higher in the pre-sliding group than in the traditional group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in the comparison of baseline data such as gender, age, side, mechanism of injury, fracture type, operation time, intraoperative bleeding, and quality of reduction between the two groups (all P > 0.05), and no statistically significant difference in fracture healing time between the two groups (P = 0.113).

CONCLUSION

The use of the pre-sliding technique of displaced femoral neck fracture fixed with FNS reduces the incidence of moderate and severe shortening, improves the postoperative TAD value, and improves the hip function scores, with a satisfactory midterm efficacy.

A bibliometric analysis of the research landscape on vascular normalization in cancer

Tumor vascular normalization profoundly affects the advancement of cancer therapy. Currently, with the rapid increase in research on tumor vascular normalization, few analytical and descriptive studies have investigated the trends in its development, key research power, present research hotspots, and future outlooks. In this study, articles and reviews published between January 1, 2003, and October 29, 2022 were retrieved from Web of Science database. Subsequently, published research trends, countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords were analyzed based on traditional bibliometric laws (such as Price's exponential growth, Bradford's, Lotka's, and Zipf's). Our results showed that the last two decades have seen an increase in tumor vascular normalization research. USA emerged as the preeminent contributor to the field, boasting the highest H-index and accruing the greatest quantity of publications and citations. Among institutions, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University made significant contributions, and Professor RK Jain was identified as a key leader in this field. Out of 583 academic journals, Cancer Research and Clinical Cancer Research published the most articles on vascular normalization. The research focal points in the field primarily include immunotherapy, tumor microenvironments, nanomedicine, and emerging frontier themes such as metabolism and mechanomedicine. Concurrently, the challenges of vascular normalization in cancer are discussed as well. In conclusion, the study presented a thorough analysis of the literature covering the past 20 years on vascular normalization in cancer, highlighting leading countries, institutions, authors, journals, and the emerging research focal points in this field. Future studies will advance the ongoing efforts in the field of tumor vascular normalization, aiming to enhance our ability to effectively manage and treat cancer.

Ischemic stroke pathophysiology: A bibliometric and visualization analysis from 1990 to 2022

Background

Pathophysiology plays a significant role in the scientific study of ischemic stroke, and has attracted increasing interest from researchers in the field. However, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis is lacking in this field. The purpose of this study is to identify the current research status and hotspots of ischemic stroke pathophysiology from a bibliometric perspective.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched for articles published from 1990 to 2022. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R package "bibliometrix" software were used to analyze countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, papers, and keywords to predict the latest trends in ischemic stroke pathophysiology research.

Results

This analysis collected 7578 records of ischemic stroke pathophysiology. China and America emerged as the leading countries in this field, with Harvard University being the most active institution. Among journals and authors in this field, journal Stroke and author Gregory YH Lip published the most papers, while Nature Medicine was the journal with the highest citation per article. Keywords and co-citation clusters were closely related to "central nervous system", "mechanisms", "biochemistry & molecular biology" and "radiology, nuclear medicine & medical imaging", while other related fields, such as peripheral organs damage induced by the central nervous system and rehabilitation after ischemic stroke, require further research efforts.

Conclusion

This is the first bibliometric study that comprehensively mapped out the knowledge structure and development trends of ischemic stroke pathophysiology in recent 32 years, which may provide a reference for scholars to explore ischemic stroke pathophysiology.

A bibliometric review of unilateral neglect: Trends, frontiers, and frameworks

BACKGROUND

Owing to the adverse effects of unilateral neglect (UN) on rehabilitation outcomes, fall risk, and activities of daily living, this field has gradually got considerable interest. Notwithstanding, there is presently an absence of efficient portrayals of the entire research field; hence, the motivation behind this study was to dissect and evaluate the literature published in the field of UN following stroke and other nonprogressive brain injuries to identify hotspots and trends for future research.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Original articles and reviews related to UN from 1970 to 2022 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix software were used to observe publication fields, countries, and authors.

RESULTS

A total of 1,202 publications were incorporated, consisting of 92% of original articles, with an overall fluctuating upward trend in the number of publications. Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States made critical contributions, with Neuropsychologia being the most persuasive academic journal, and Bartolomeo P. ranked first in both the quantity of publications and co-citations. Keywords were divided into four clusters, and burst keyword detection demonstrated that networks and virtual reality might additionally emerge as frontiers of future development and warrant additional attention.

CONCLUSIONS

UN is an emerging field, and this study presents the first bibliometric analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of research in the field. The insights and guidance garnered from our research on frontiers, trends, and popular topics could prove highly valuable in facilitating the rapid development of this field while informing future research directions.

The role of microRNAs in axon regeneration after peripheral nerve injury: a bibliometric analysis

Objective

This study analyzed the current research hotspots and future development trends of the therapeutic effects of microRNA on PNI axonal regeneration through bibliometric methods. Moreover, the current advantages and disadvantages of this field as well as future development prospects are discussed in depth.

Methods

CiteSpace V and VOSviewer were used as bibliometric tools to complete the analysis of the research focus and direction of the published articles. To supplement, sort out, and summarize, we analyzed the research status of the study on the application of microRNAs for axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury from 2013 to 2023.

Results

A total of 207 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science database. After exclusion and screening, a final selection of 174 articles that met the research criteria. These 174 articles were authored by a total of 846 individuals, representing 24 countries and 199 institutions. Additionally, this study presents information on the annual publication output, country distribution, top 5 contributing authors, top 5 most cited articles, and top 10 contributing institutions.

Conclusion

As one of the hottest topics today, microRNAs have become the current research hotspot in neural inflammation, neural cell repair and regeneration, neural protection, and functional recovery. With more investment in research in this field, more high-quality articles will be published in both domestic and international outstanding journals, which will bring a new era for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury.

Research Progress on Injectable Microspheres as New Strategies for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis Through Promotion of Cartilage Repair

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease caused by a variety of factors with joint pain as the main symptom, including fibrosis, chapping, ulcers, and loss of cartilage. Traditional treatment can only delay the progression of OA, and classical delivery system have many side effects. In recent years, microspheres have shown great application prospects in the field of OA treatment. Microspheres can support cells, reproduce the natural tissue microenvironment in vitro and in vivo, and are an efficient delivery system for the release of drugs or biological agents, which can promote cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Thus, they have been widely used in cartilage repair and regeneration. In this review, preparation processes, basic materials, and functional characteristics of various microspheres commonly used in OA treatment are systematically reviewed. Then it is introduced surface modification strategies that can improve the biological properties of microspheres and discussed a series of applications of microsphere functionalized scaffolds in OA treatment. Finally, based on bibliometrics research, the research development, future potential, and possible research hotspots of microspheres in the field of OA therapy is systematically and dynamically evaluated. The comprehensive and systematic review will bring new understanding to the field of microsphere treatment of OA.

Influence of glutamine metabolism on diabetes Development:A scientometric review

Objective

"Metabolism affects function" is the consensus of researchers at present. It has potential clinical application value to study the effects of regulating glutamine (Gln) metabolism on diabetes physiology or pathology. Our research aimed to summarize the latest research progress, frontier hot topics and future development trends in this field from the perspective of scientometrics.

Methods

Relevant literatures and reviews were obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) between January 1, 2001 and May 31, 2022. An online analysis platform of bibliometrics, CiteSpace, and VOS viewer software were used to generate visual knowledge network graphs, including publication countries, institutions and authors partnership analysis, co-occurrence analysis, co-citation analysis, as well as citations and keywords burst detection to acquire research trends and hotspots.

Results

Our results showed that a total of 945 publications in the WoS database met the analysis requirements, with articles being the main type. The overall characteristics showed an increasing trend in the number of publications and citations. The United States was leading the way in this research and was a hub for aggregating collaborations across countries. Vanderbilt University delivered high-quality impact with the most published articles. DeBerardinis, RJ in this field was the most representative author and his main research contents were Gln metabolism and mitochondrial glutaminolysis. Significantly, there was a relative lack of collaboration between institutions and authors. In addition, "type 2 diabetes", "glutamine", "metabolism", "gene expression" and "metabolomics" were the keywords categories with high frequency in co-citation references and co-occurrence cluster keywords. Analysis of popular keywords burst detection showed that "branched chain", "oxidative phosphorylation", "kinase", "insulin sensitivity", "tca cycle", "magnetic resonance spectroscopy" and "flux analysis" were new research directions and emerging methods to explore the link between Gln metabolism and diabetes. Overall, exploring Gln metabolism showed a gradual upward trend in the field of diabetes.

Conclusion

This comprehensive scientometric study identified the general outlook for the field and provided valuable guidance for ongoing research. Strategies to regulate Gln metabolism hold promise as a novel target to treat diabetes, as well as integration and intersection of multidisciplinary provides cooperation strategies and technical guarantees for the development of this field.

Increasing Burden of Upper-Extremity Fractures in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): A 30-Year Analysis of the Epidemiology and Causes of Injuries

BACKGROUND

Upper-extremity fractures (UEFs) account for a large proportion of bone fractures and are costly to both health and the economy. The fracture burden in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is influenced by the region's diverse cultural, economic, and political status. This study examined UEF epidemiology and causes across the MENA region and within the 21 MENA countries as categorized by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data set.

METHODS

On the basis of GBD data, this study evaluated the epidemiology of UEFs from 1990 to 2019. The causes of injuries, incidence, number of years of healthy life lost due to disability (YLD), and their association with the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) were obtained and calculated for males and females in all age groups.

RESULTS

From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of UEFs in the MENA region increased by 2.33%, to 1,086.39 per 100,000 people, and the YLD rate increased 15.69%, to 9.17 per 100,000, opposing the global decreasing trends. Fractures of the radius and/or ulna had the highest ASIR (505.32 per 100,000) of all UEF types in 2019. The clavicle, scapula, and humerus had the highest increasing trend among the fracture sites. In 2019, Saudi Arabia had the highest ASIR of UEFs (2,296.93 per 100,000). Afghanistan had the highest age-standardized YLD rate due to UEFs (19.6 per 100,000) in 2019, with Syria (153.32%) and Iran (37.04%) experiencing the greatest increase and decrease, respectively, from 1990 to 2019. Falling was the leading cause of UEFs, accounting for 45.05% of incidence and 41.19% of YLD overall.

CONCLUSIONS

Contrary to global trends, UEFs increased in the MENA region during the study period. Countries with higher fracture incidence and YLD should consider preventive and rehabilitation strategies.

Research hotspots for pediatric fractures from 2017 to 2022: A bibliometric and visual analysis via Citespace

Objective

This review provides guidance and ideas for researchers through a comprehensive and comparative analysis of the present state, trends, and hotspots in the pediatric fracture literature over the past 6 years.

Methods

We used Citespace 6.1.R6 software to explore the country/region distribution, institutions, journals, keyword analysis, and co-cited references of the literature from Web of Science core database.

Results

There are 6472 pieces of pediatric fracture-related literature, including 2962 from 2017 to 2019 and 3510 from 2020 to 2022. The country with the most papers is the United States, and US institutions and journals also have a pivotal position in this field. Research hotspots for pediatric fractures in 2017-2019: The topic with the most attention is bone mineral density leading to related bone diseases. Treatment for pediatric fractures, including supracondylar humeral fractures, Monteggia fractures, forearm fractures, knee fractures, and ankle fractures in children, is another topic of greater interest. Brain injuries and dental injuries in children due to abuse and trauma are also concerning issues. Research hotspots for pediatric fractures in 2020-2022: comparison with 2017-2019 revealed a relative decrease regarding ankle-related epiphyseal injuries, but there is a higher focus on the epidemiology of fractures in children, risk factors, and reasons for childhood trauma. We have confirmed through literature co-citations that the literature of high interest is also in these aspects.

Conclusion

Researchers and clinicians can quickly learn about topics of interest through authoritative journals and highly cited literature and rapidly master the current status and frontiers of the field through study, providing ideas for future work.

A bibliometric analysis of macrophages associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease research from 2005 to 2023

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver condition associated with the risk of progressing to decompensated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. While macrophages play a crucial role in the development of NAFLD, their heterogeneity and plasticity allow them to undertake diverse roles in immune response, tissue repair, and maintaining tissue homeostasis. Thus, the exact involvement of macrophages in the onset and progression of NAFLD remains to be further explored. This study aims to employ bibliometric analysis to elucidate the role of macrophages in the pathogenesis of NAFLD, analyze research focal points in this domain, and speculate on future research trends. The literature search, conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection, encompassed articles and reviews related to macrophages and NAFLD published between 2005 and 2023. A bibliometric analysis of 1264 extracted publications was performed using VOSviewer 1.6.17 and Citespace 6.1. R2, evaluating parameters such as spatial and temporal distribution, authors, thematic categories, topic distribution, references, and keywords. The findings revealed a steady global increase in publications in this field, with the United States contributing the most followed by China. The University of California System produced the highest volume of publications, while the Journal of Hepatology had the highest impact factors among the top 10 publishing journals. Tacke Frank emerged as both the most prolific author and the most cited. Co-occurrence and burst analysis of keywords and references highlighted the hotspots in this research area, emphasizing the mechanisms of NAFLD pathogenesis, metabolic regulation, immune modulation, and oxidative stress. Maintaining hepatic homeostasis by liver macrophages and macrophage polarization were identified as trending research directions in this field. Based on the bibliometric analysis, continued attention toward NAFLD therapeutic research involving hepatic macrophages is anticipated. As the mechanisms underlying NAFLD pathogenesis are further elucidated, the development of more treatment approaches related to macrophage immunology and metabolic regulation may expand therapeutic options. This study offers valuable insights into the current state and future trends in the field, providing beneficial guidance to researchers aiming to make significant contributions.

Comorbidity Patterns in Older Patients Undergoing Hip Fracture Surgery: A Comorbidity Network Analysis Study

Comorbidity network analysis (CNA) is a technique in which mathematical graphs encode correlations (edges) among diseases (nodes) inferred from the disease co-occurrence data of a patient group. The present study applied this network-based approach to identifying comorbidity patterns in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. This was a retrospective observational cohort study using electronic health records (EHR). EHR data were extracted from the one University Health System in the southeast United States. The cohort included patients aged 65 and above who had a first-time low-energy traumatic hip fracture treated surgically between October 1, 2015 and December 31, 2018 (n = 1,171). Comorbidity includes 17 diagnoses classified by the Charlson Comorbidity Index. The CNA investigated the comorbid associations among 17 diagnoses. The association strength was quantified using the observed-to-expected ratio (OER). Several network centrality measures were used to examine the importance of nodes, namely degree, strength, closeness, and betweenness centrality. A cluster detection algorithm was employed to determine specific clusters of comorbidities. Twelve diseases were significantly interconnected in the network (OER > 1, p-value < .05). The most robust associations were between metastatic carcinoma and mild liver disease, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure, and hemi/paraplegia and cerebrovascular disease (OER > 2.5). Cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and myocardial infarction were identified as the central diseases that co-occurred with numerous other diseases. Two distinct clusters were noted, and the largest cluster comprised 10 diseases, primarily encompassing cardiometabolic and cognitive disorders. The results highlight specific patient comorbidities that could be used to guide clinical assessment, management, and targeted interventions that improve hip fracture outcomes in this patient group.

Bibliometrics and visual analysis of metformin and gut microbiota from 2012 to 2022: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Metformin is an old drug used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and can play a variety of roles by regulating the gut microbiota. The number of research articles on metformin in the gut microbiota has increased annually; however, no bibliometric tools have been used to analyze the research status and hot trends in this field. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of publications on metformin and gut microbiota.

METHODS

We searched the Web of Science core collection database on June 8, 2023, for papers related to metformin and gut microbiota from 2012 to 2022. We used Microsoft Excel 2021, VOSviewer1.6.19, CiteSpace 6.2.4, and R software package "bibliometrix" 4.0.0 to analyze the countries, institutions, authors, journals, citations, and keywords of the included publications.

RESULTS

We included 517 papers, and the trend in publications increased over the last 11 years. The 517 articles were from 57 countries, including 991 institutions and 3316 authors, and were published in 259 journals. China led all countries (233 papers) and the most influential institution was the Chinese Academy of Sciences (16 papers). PLOS ONE (19 papers) was the most popular journal, and Nature (1598 citations) was the most cited journal. Li and Kim were the 2 most published authors (six papers each), and Cani (272 co-citations) was the most co-cited author. "Metabolites," "aging," and "intestinal barrier" were emerging topics in this field.

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric study comprehensively summarizes the research trends and progress of metformin and gut microbiota, and provides new research topics and trends for studying the effects of metformin on gut microbiota in different diseases.

Global research trends in CRISPR-related technologies associated with extracellular vesicles from 2015 to 2022: a bibliometric, dynamic, and visualized study

PURPOSE

This study aims to explore the emerging trends, dynamic development, and research hotspots of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) technology associated with extracellular vesicles during the past 7 years and demonstrate them by visualization.

METHODS

A total of 219 records related to CRISPR technology associated with extracellular vesicles from 2015 to 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database were collected. R language, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and GraphpadPrism software packages were used to analyze the history of this research, the general characteristics of the literature, and keywords. Finally, the hotspots and latest trends in CRISPR technology associated with extracellular vesicles are predicted.

RESULTS

A total of 219 articles were collected for this study. The production of publications about CRISPR technology associated with extracellular vesicles has increased annually. Researchers from China, the USA, and Germany made the most important contributions to this trend, while RLUK Research Libraries UK offers the largest amount of literature in this field. Shenzhen University, Nanjing Medicine University, and Peking University exhibited the closest cooperation. Additionally, active topics burst during different periods, as identified according to 317 keywords belonging to 39 disciplines. Keywords were clustered into seven research subareas, namely exosome, nanovesicles, DNA, gene editing, gene therapy, cancer therapy, and endometrial stromal cells. The alluvial map of keywords reveals that the most enduring concepts are gene therapy, nanovesicles, etc., while the emerging keywords are genome, protein delivery, plasma, etc. CONCLUSIONS: We reviewed 219 previous publications and conducted the first bibliometric study of CRISPR technology related to extracellular vesicles from 2015 to 2022. This comprehensive summary constructed a knowledge map and demonstrates the trends in this area. The current trends and potential hotpots for this topic are also identified, which will be a great help for researchers in the future.

Emerging trends and research priorities in premature ovarian insufficiency genes: a bibliometric and visualization study

PURPOSE

To illustrate the results achieved by genes in premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and collaborations in the field, and to explore key themes and future directions.

METHODS

Articles and reviews related to POI genes published between 1990 and 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection (WoSCC) for the total bibliometric analysis. Tools were analyzed for publication, country, institution, journal, authors, reference, keywords, subject categories, funding agencies, and research hotspots using a bibliometric online analysis platform, Bibliographic Co-occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB), CiteSpace V, and VOSviewer.

RESULTS

A total of 2,232 papers were included in this study. Articles were published in 52 countries, with the United States publishing the most, followed by China. A total of 308 institutions contributed to relevant publications. Shandong University published the most papers. Qin Y's team published the most relevant papers. Human reproduction and fertility and sterility are the two journals with the most papers. X-chromosome abnormalities, transcription factor mutations, and FMR1 genes are the directions of more POI, and DNA repair is the keyword of the research frontier in recent years.

CONCLUSIONS

This study summarizes the relevant literature on POI gene research for the first time and analyzes the current hotspots and future trends in this field. The findings can further reveal the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of POI, which is beneficial for researchers to grasp the genetic dynamics of POI women.

Global trends and hotspots in IgA nephropathy: a bibliometric analysis and knowledge map visualization from 2012 to 2023

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the distribution patterns and research frontiers of international literature and thus present a holistic bibliometric evaluation of the studies on IgA nephropathy.

METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched for studies of IgA nephropathy from January 2012 to March 2023. The keywords and references are analyzed by CiteSpace, while the countries and institutions are analyzed by VOSviewer.

RESULTS

A total of 2987 publications on IgA nephropathy were included. The country with the most publications was China (n = 1299), and the institution with the most publications was Peking University (n = 139). The most frequent keywords were IgA nephropathy (n = 2013), Oxford classification (n = 482), and diseases (n = 433). The keywords that continue to burst out at high intensity are multicenter study and gut microbiota. Moreover, the top five references for burst strength were also listed.

CONCLUSIONS

IgA nephropathy has attracted widespread research interest, particularly in high-prevalence areas. From 2012 to 2023, publications on IgA nephropathy show a linear increase. China is the country with the highest number of publications and Peking University is the institution with the highest number of publications. Current research hotspots and frontiers are mainly multicenter studies related to IgA nephropathy and its exploration with gut microbiota. Overall, we have provided a comprehensive scientometric analysis of IgA nephropathy that will inform researchers and healthcare practitioners.

Research trends of acupuncture therapy on facial paralysis in a decade spanning 2013-2023: A bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to employ bibliometric approaches to assess the worldwide scientific achievements in acupuncture for facial paralysis research from 2013 to 2023, and explore the hotspots and frontiers.

METHODS

Articles related to acupuncture facial paralysis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace was utilized to examine journals, publication year, country, institution, cited authors, as well as authors.Research hotspots and trends were analyzed by mapping co-citation networks and keywords.

RESULTS

The period from January 1, 2013, to July 31, 2023, yielded nearly 145 research records on acupuncture treatment for facial paralysis, with a steady increase in the number of annual publications.In terms of the number of publications, OTOLARYNGOLOGY HEAD NECK had the highest publication count, while AM J CHINESE MED exhibited the highest centrality and citation frequency among the cited journals. Further, 54.4 % of publications originated from China, followed by USA (8.2 %) and Germany (8.2 %). Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine stood out with the highest publication volume among institutions. Guntinas-lichius, Orlando was the most prolific author, and PEITERSEN E was the most cited author. The keywords "Randomized controlled trials" and "multicenter" displayed high frequency and centrality, indicating that clinical trials with a randomized controlled design and multicenter studies were prevalent research methods, likely to remain a future trend.

CONCLUSION

Acupuncture's potential in the treatment of facial paralysis merits further research. Authors from different countries/regions and organizations need to eliminate language and academic barriers and strengthen collaboration and communication. Current research hotspots focus on "brain", "nerve", "electrical stimulation", "RCT" and "guidelines". The study of acupuncture mechanisms, especially based on the central nervous system mechanism, may be the future research hotspot.

The Research Field of Meat Preservation: A Scientometric and Visualization Analysis Based on the Web of Science

Meat plays a significant role in human diets, providing a rich source of high-quality protein. With advancements in technology, research in the field of meat preservation has been undergoing dynamic evolution. To gain insights into the development of this discipline, the study conducted an analysis and knowledge structure mapping of 1672 papers related to meat preservation research within the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) spanning from 2001 to 2023. And using software tools such as VOSviewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 5.8.R3c allowed for the convenient analysis of the literature by strictly following the software operation manuals. Moreover, the knowledge structure of research in the field of meat preservation was synthesized within the framework of "basic research-technological application-integration of technology with fundamental research," aligning with the research content. Co-cited literature analysis indicated that meat preservation research could be further categorized into seven collections, as well as highlighting the prominent role of the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of plant essential oils in ongoing research. Subsequently, the future research direction and focus of the meat preservation field were predicted and prospected. The findings of this study could offer valuable assistance to researchers in swiftly comprehending the discipline's development and identifying prominent research areas, thus providing valuable guidance for shaping research topics.

Research and publication trends on knee osteoarthritis and cellular senescence: a bibliometric analysis

Background: Cellular senescence is associated with age-related pathological changes, senescent cells promote the development of knee osteoarthritis. A better understanding between knee osteoarthritis and cellular senescence may enhance the effectiveness of therapies that aim to slow or stop the progression of this disease. Purpose: This study aimed to systematically analyze and visualize the publication trends, research frontiers and current research hotspots of knee osteoarthritis and cellular senescence by using bibliometrics. Methods: The publication search was performed on the Web of Science Core Collection database for documents published from 1992 to 2023. VOSviewer, Citespace, R package Bibliometrix and Microsoft Office Excel were used to study the characteristics of the publications. The publication number, countries, institutions, authors, journals, citations and co-citations, keywords were analyzed. Results: A total of 1,074 publications were analyzed, with an average annual growth rate of 29.89%. United States accounted for the biggest contributor, ranked first in publications and citations. Publications of this field were published in 420 journals, OSTEOARTHRITIS and CARTILAGE was the most influential. A total of 5,657 authors contributed to this research. The most productive author was Lotz, MK (n = 31, H-index = 22, Total citation = 2,619), followed by Loeser, R.F (n = 16, H-index = 14, Total citation = 2,825). However, the collaboration between authors was relatively weak. Out of the 1,556 institutions involved, 60% were from the United States. Scripps Research ranked first with 25 papers and a total of 2,538 citations. The hotspots of this field had focused on the pathomechanisms (e.g., expression, inflammation, apoptosis, autophagy, oxidative stress) and therapeutics (e.g., stem cell, platelet-rich plasma, transplantation, autologous chondrocytes, repair), and the exploration of Senolytics might be the important direction of future research. Conclusion: Research on the cross field of knee osteoarthritis and cellular senescence is flourishing. Age-related pathomechanism maps of various cells in the joint and the targeted medicines for the senescent cells may be the future trends. This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive analysis of this cross field and new insights into future research.

Mapping research trends of transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma from 2012 to 2021: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a therapy where drugs aimed to slow or halt tumor development are injected into the artery supplying for HCC tissues. A comprehensive analysis of all the articles on TACE for HCC can give us a general understanding of the progress in this field and provide guidance for future research.

AIM

To analyze and visualize scientific results and research trends in TACE treatment for HCC.

METHODS

The "Web of Science" database was used to identify articles regarding TACE for the treatment of HCC from 2012 to 2021. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to analyze the publications trends, collaboration between countries/insti-tutions/authors, and the co-occurrence of keywords, keyword bursts, and references.

RESULTS

A total of 5728 original articles on TACE for HCC were retrieved. Regarding the volume of publications, the total number of yearly publications showed a generally increasing trend. China had the highest number of articles, while the United States achieved the highest Hirsch index and highest number of citations. The Sun Yat-sen University in China was most prolific institution. The most active author was Park, J.W from South Korea. The Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (234 articles) was the most productive journal. There is a growing trend toward international collaboration in TACE for HCC. Cluster networks of co-cited references suggested that practice guidelines and targeted therapies are an essential theme in this field. In addition, cluster analysis based on keyword co-occurrence identified the research topic "prediction of TACE treatment" as a hotspot, and propensity score matching can be used to help investigators conduct innovative studies in the future.

CONCLUSION

The results of our bibliometric analysis provide the latest trends and hot topics in TACE therapy for HCC.

Global cluster analysis and network visualization in organoids in cancer research: a scientometric mapping from 1991 to 2021

Objective

In the last three decades, there has been a surge in research on cancer organoids using 3D culture technologies, which has resulted in the development of physiological human cancer models. This study aims to provide an overview of the global trends and frontiers in research on cancer organoids.

Methods

A total of 3189 publications on organoids in cancer research from 1991 to 2021 were collected from the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) of Web of Science (WoS). Bibliometric methods such as the R package "Bibliometrix," Citespace, and VOS viewer software were employed to investigate and visualize bibliographic coupling, co-citation, co-authorship, and co-occurrence trends, as well as publication trends in the field of organoids in cancer research.

Results

From 1991 to 2021, there has been a significant increase in publications on cancer organoids, with most articles being from North America, Eastern Asia, and Western Europe. The USA had the highest number of publications, citations, prolific authors, and research funding globally. Cancers was the journal with the most publications, while Nature had the best total link strength. Harvard University were the most contributive institutions. The global research in this field could be classified into five clusters: chemotherapy study, organoids for drug screening, different models, molecular mechanism study, and organoid construction. These areas are expected to remain hotspots for future research.

Conclusions

The number of publications on organoids in cancer research is expected to increase based on current global trends.

The research landscape of immunology research in spinal cord injury from 2012 to 2022

Background

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is defined as traumatic damage to the spinal cord, affecting over three million patients worldwide, and there is still no treatment for the injured spinal cord itself. In recent years, immunology research on SCI has been published in various journals.

Methods

To systematically analyze the research hotspots and dynamic scientific developments of immunology research in SCI, we conducted a bibliometric and knowledge map analysis to help researchers gain a global perspective in this research field.

Results

The bibliometric study we completed included 1788 English-language papers published in 553 journals by 8861 authors from 1901 institutions in 66 countries/regions. Based on the references and keyword analysis, researchers in the past 10 years have mainly focused on the research directions of "monocyte chemoattractor protein 1," "nitric oxide," "pain," and "nitric oxide synthase" related to immunological research in SCI. However, with the development of other new directions such as "extracellular vesicles" (2019-2022), "Regenerative medicine" (2019-2022), "stromal cells" (2018-2022), "motor recovery" (2019-2022), and "glial activation" (2019-2022). Researchers prefer to study the application of regenerative strategies in SCI, the mechanism of extracellular vesicles in the development of SCI, the activation of spinal glial cells in SCI, and the pathways of motor recovery. This bibliometric analysis of immunology research in SCI summarizes the current status of this research field. The relationship between extracellular vesicles, regenerative medicine, stromal cells, motor recovery, and glial activation is currently a major research frontier. Further research and cooperation worldwide need to be enhanced.

Conclusion

We believe that our research can help researchers quickly grasp the current hotspot of immunology research in SCI and determine a new direction for future research.

Knowledge structure and hotspots research of glioma immunotherapy: a bibliometric analysis

Background

Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor. Traditional treatments for glioma include surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and bevacizumab therapy, but their efficacies are limited. Immunotherapy provides a new direction for glioma treatment. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge structure and research hotspots of glioma immunotherapy through a bibliometric analysis.

Method

Publications pertaining to glioma immunotherapy published during the period from 1st January 1990 to 27th March 2023 were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed using the CiteSpace, VOSviewer, Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology, and R software. The hotspots and prospects of glioma immunotherapy research were illustrated via analyzing the countries, institutions, journals, authors, citations and keywords of eligible publications.

Results

A total of 1,929 publications pertaining to glioma immunotherapy in 502 journals were identified as of 27th March 2023, involving 9,505 authors from 1,988 institutions in 62 countries. Among them were 1,285 articles and 644 reviews. Most of publications were produced by the United States. JOURNAL OF NEURO-ONCOLOGY published the majority of publications pertaining to glioma immunotherapy. Among the authors, Lim M contributed the largest number of publications. Through analyzing keyword bursts and co-cited references, immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) were identified as the research focus and hotspot.

Conclusion

Using a bibliometric analysis, this study provided the knowledge structure and research hotspots in glioma immunotherapy research during the past 33 years, with ICIs staying in the current and future hotspot. Our findings may direct the research of glioma immunotherapy in the future.

A bibliometric systematic review of extracellular vesicles in eye diseases from 2003 to 2022

BACKGROUND

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a valuable and promising research field in eye diseases. However, there are few bibliometric studies in this area. The purpose of this study was to employ bibliometric analysis to visualize the research hotspots and trends of EVs in eye diseases and provide researchers with new perspectives for further studies.

METHODS

Articles and reviews on EVs in eye diseases published between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel and CiteSpace software.

RESULTS

In total, 790 articles were included in the analysis. Over the past 2 decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of publications on the study of EVs in eye diseases. The United States, China, and Italy made the most significant contributions to this field. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most productive institution, and International Journal of Molecular Sciences published the most number of articles. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America had the highest citation frequency. Beit-Yannai E had the highest output and Thery C had the highest average citation frequency among authors. The analysis of keywords revealed that the neuroprotective effects of stem cell-derived EVs and biomarkers of eye diseases are current research hotspots and frontiers in this field.

CONCLUSION

This study provides a scientific perspective on EVs in eye diseases and provides valuable information for researchers to detect current research conditions, hotspots, and emerging trends for further study.

Bibliometric analysis of stem cells for spinal cord injury: current status and emerging frontiers

Background: This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury to visualize the research status, identify hotspots, and explore the development trends in this field. Methods: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database using relevant keywords ("stem cells" and "spinal cord injury") and retrieved the published literature between 2000 and 2022. Data such as journal title, author information, institutional affiliation, country, and keywords were extracted. Afterwards, we performed bibliometric analysis of the retrieved data using Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. Results: A total of 5375 articles related to stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury were retrieved, and both the annual publication volume and the cumulative publication volume showed an upward trend. neural regeneration research was the journal with the most publications and the fastest cumulative publication growth (162 articles), Okano Hideyuki was the author with the highest number of publications and citations (114 articles), Sun Yat-sen University was the institution with the highest number of publications (420 articles), and China was the country with the highest number of publications (5357 articles). However, different authors, institutions, and countries need to enhance their cooperation in order to promote the generation of significant academic achievements. Current research in this field has focused on stem cell transplantation, neural regeneration, motor function recovery, exosomes, and tissue engineering. Meanwhile, future research directions are primarily concerned with the molecular mechanisms, safety, clinical trials, exosomes, scaffolds, hydrogels, and inflammatory responses of stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries. Conclusion: In summary, this study provided a comprehensive analysis of the current research status and frontiers of stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury. The findings provide a foundation for future research and clinical translation efforts of stem cell therapy in this field.

Machine learning algorithms for predicting the risk of fracture in patients with diabetes in China

Background

Patients with diabetes are more likely to be predisposed to fractures compared to those without diabetes. In clinical practice, predicting fracture risk in diabetics is still difficult because of the limited availability and accessibility of existing fracture prediction tools in the diabetic population. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate models using machine learning (ML) algorithms to achieve high predictive power for fracture in patients with diabetes in China.

Methods

In this study, the clinical data of 775 hospitalized patients with diabetes was analyzed by using Decision Tree (DT), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Probabilistic Classification Vector Machines (PCVM) algorithms to construct risk prediction models for fractures. Moreover, the risk factors for diabetes-related fracture were identified by the feature selection algorithms.

Results

The ML algorithms extracted 17 most relevant factors from raw clinical data to maximize the accuracy of the prediction results, including bone mineral density, age, sex, weight, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, height, duration of diabetes, total cholesterol, osteocalcin, N-terminal propeptide of type I, diastolic blood pressure, and body mass index. The 7 ML models including LR, SVM, RF, DT, GBDT, XGBoost, and PCVM had f1 scores of 0.75, 0.83, 0.84, 0.85, 0.87, 0.88, and 0.97, respectively.

Conclusions

This study identified 17 most relevant risk factors for diabetes-related fracture using ML algorithms. And the PCVM model proved to perform best in predicting the fracture risk in the diabetic population. This work proposes a cheap, safe, and extensible ML algorithm for the precise assessment of risk factors for diabetes-related fracture.

Insomnia and circadian rhythm: a bibliometrics study and visualization analysis via CiteSpace

Objective

The present study aimed to use CiteSpace to analyze the status of insomnia and circadian rhythm, identify the hot spots and trends, and provide a basis for future study.

Method

The Web of Science database was searched for studies related to insomnia and circadian from its inception to 14 April 2023. CiteSpace was used to generate online maps of collaboration between countries and authors and revealed hot spots and frontiers in insomnia and circadian rhythm.

Results

We searched 4,696 publications related to insomnia and circadian rhythm. Bruno Etain was the most prolific author with most publications, i.e., with 24 articles. The USA and the University of California were the leading country and the top institution in this field of study, with 1,672 and 269 articles, respectively. There was active cooperation between institutions, countries, and authors. Hot topics focused on circadian rhythm sleep disorders, circadian clock, light therapy, melatonin, and bipolar disorder.

Conclusion

Based on the CiteSpace results, we recommend a more active collaboration between various countries, institutions, and authors to conduct clinical and basic research related to insomnia and circadian rhythm. Ongoing research focuses on the interaction of insomnia with circadian rhythms and the corresponding pathways of clock genes and by extension, the role of circadian rhythms in disorders such as bipolar disorder. Modulation of circadian rhythms may be a hot spot for future insomnia therapies (such as light therapy and melatonin).

Emerging trends and research foci of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: a 20-year bibliometric analysis

Background

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a demyelinating syndrome of the central nervous system. A tremendous amount of literature on NMOSD has been published. This study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis of the publications on NMOSD and show its hotspots and development trends.

Methods

We used the Web of Science Core Collection as a database and searched the literature published between 2002 and 2022. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, online bibliometric platform, and R-bibliometrix were used to conduct bibliometric analysis and network visualization, including the number of publications, citations, countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords.

Results

A total of 3,057 publications on NMOSD were published in 198 journals by 200 authors at 200 institutions from 93 countries/regions. The United States published the most literature and made great contributions to this field. The Mayo Clinic was the institution with the largest number of publications. The journal with the most publications was Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders, and the most co-cited journal was Neurology. The author with the most publications was Fujihara, K., while the most frequently co-cited author was Wingerchuk, DM. The current research hotspots may be focused on "efficacy," "multicenter," "interleukin-6 receptor blockade," "safety," "azathioprine," "tolerance," and "adult".

Conclusion

This study was the first bibliometric analysis of publications on the NMOSD field, visualizing its bibliometric characteristics and gaining insight into the direction, hotspots, and development of global NMOSD research, which may provide helpful information for researchers. Future research hotspots might be conducting randomized controlled trials on targeted immunotherapy in the NMOSD field.

Bibliometric and altmetric analysis of research relating to antiphospholipid syndrome based on VOS viewer (2011-2021)

BACKGROUND

Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disorder characterized by recurrent vascular thrombosis and pregnancy losses in the presence of persistently positive antiphospholipid antibodies. Bibliometric analysis and altmetric analysis are methods of analyzing academic productivity and influence. Currently, the assessment of antiphospholipid syndrome through the above analyses is lacking. This study investigated the quantity and quality of studies in the field of antiphospholipid syndrome and revealed the characteristics of worldwide productivity on this disease by the bibliometric analysis and altmetric analysis.

METHODS

The terms "APS," "antiphospholipid syndrome," "antiphospholipid-antibody syndrome," and "Hughes syndrome" were searched on the Web of Science Core Collection from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2021. Original articles and reviews were selected. We set the filters as "English."

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

A total of 1818 articles were retrieved from 68 countries, of which 20 met the criteria of major active countries. High-income countries contributed 1341 articles (73.48%). The number of articles annually increased significantly in the 10-year period (P < 0.001). The USA (253, 13.91%) was the most productive country. Adjusted by population, Serbia was top of the list. According to the gross domestic product analysis, Serbia ranked first. The most used keywords such as thrombosis and antiphospholipid antibodies were presented by keywords analyses. A content analysis found antithrombotic and anticoagulant therapy as research hotspots. A significant correlation was detected between average citations and altmetric attention scores (P = 0.002) and Mendeley readers count (P < 0.001). From 2011 to 2021, the number of global articles increased rapidly. Most papers came from high-income countries. The relationship between the bibliometric and altmetric analyses were basically consistent; therefore the two can prove/complement each other. Key points • We revealed the global productivity characteristics of the papers related to antiphospholipid syndrome by using the methods of bibliometric analysis and altmetric analysis. • We found the most selected articles that describe the treatment of antiphospholipid syndrome, especially antithrombotic and anticoagulant treatments, which may be the current research hotspot.

Global research on cancer and sleep: A bibliometric and visual analysis of the last two decades

Objective

The study aimed to analyze the research status, hotspots, and frontiers of global research on cancer and sleep through bibliometrics and provide references and guidance for future research.

Methods

The literature regarding cancer and sleep from 2002 to 2022 was searched from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace 5.6.R3 was performed for visualization analysis.

Results

A total of 1,172 publications were identified. The number of publications in the field has gradually increased over the past two decades. The United States had the most prominent contributions. Taipei Medical University and the University of California, San Francisco, and David Gozal were the most prolific institutions and author, respectively. The most published academic journal was Supportive Care in Cancer. The research hotspots can be summarized into the symptom cluster intervention for cancer survivors and the association between cancer and melatonin and/or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The complex interaction between cancer and sleep disruption and the influencing factors of sleep quality may be the emerging trends of research.

Conclusion

This study systematically analyzed the hotspots and frontiers in the field of cancer and sleep and called for strengthening cooperation among countries, institutions, and authors. In addition, intervention measures for the cancer symptom cluster, the bioavailability of exogenous melatonin, the causal relationship between OSA and cancer, the mechanism of tumor-induced sleep disruption, the dose–response relationship between sleep duration and cancer risk, and the path relationship between sleep quality influencing factors may be the focus of future research.

Knowledge domain and emerging trends in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: A visualization analysis via CiteSpace

Background

As an effective strategy that reduces transmission among people at high risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has revolutionized HIV prevention. Our study aims to provide a reference for the development of relevant research and the formulation of prevention and control policies for HIV.

Methods

Through CiteSpace software, this study aims to present a comprehensive overview of the HIV PrEP knowledge structure, hotspots, and frontiers. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection for studies published between 2012 and 2022 related to HIV PrEP, and 3,243 papers remained after selection.

Results

The number of HIV PrEP publications has increased over the past few years. A close integration and exchange of HIV PrEP research findings has taken place between countries and authors. Major ongoing research trends include long-term injection PrEP, the impact of chlamydia on HIV PrEP, and individual awareness of and attitudes toward HIV PrEP. Thus, more attention should be paid to innovations and breakthroughs in drugs, the factors that affect HIV transmission and susceptibility, and the future promotion of public acceptance of HIV PrEP.

Conclusion

This study offers a systematic, objective, and comprehensive analysis of the related articles. It will assist scholars in understanding the dynamic evolution of HIV PrEP research and identifying future research areas to better advance the development of the field.

A bibliometric analysis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies from 1982 to 2021

OBJECTIVE

There has been an increasing number of literature related to idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) in the past few decades. However, there is a lack of intuitive and systematic analysis of research on IIM. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis to identify the current trends and hotspots of research on IIM.

METHODS

Articles and reviews on IIM published during 1982-2021 were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. VOSviewer application was applied to conduct a network analysis of the keywords, institutions, and countries. The top 100 most-cited publications regarding IIM were analyzed.

RESULTS

In total, 665 publications were included. Globally, the USA produced the most articles on IIM (144). Karolinska Institutet was the institution with the most outputs (47). Rheumatology ranked on top of journals, with 47 IIM-related documents collecting a total of 1420 citations. In the area of IIM documents, biomarkers were the most common research theme. According to the co-occurrence analysis of keywords, "cardiac involvement," "criteria," and "refractory adult" were identified as significant future research centers.

CONCLUSION

The scientific literature on IIM has advanced rapidly in the past 4 decades. The classification criteria, treatment, and extramuscular manifestations of IIM have been identified as promising research frontiers in the field. The global status and trends of the IIM literature from a bibliometric aspect can offer a helpful guidance and new insight for researchers and medical workers in the domain. The association between hemoglobin at admission and mortality of older patients with hip fracture: a mean 3-year follow-up cohort study

BACKGROUND

Hip fracture patients often have a large drop in hemoglobin (Hgb) concentration that is associated with the initial trauma. However, there is no study of a correlation between Hgb concentration at admission and short-term mortality. Thus, we evaluated a possible linear and nonlinear association between Hgb and mortalityfor older patients with hip fracture.

METHODS

Consecutive older patients who had hip fractures were screened between January 2015 and September 2019. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected. Linear and nonlinear multivariate Cox regression models were used to identify association between Hgb at admission and mortality. All analyses were performed with EmpowerStats and R software.

RESULTS

Two thousand five hundred eighty-nine patients were included in the study. There were 849 men and 1740 women. The mean age was 79.6 ± 6.8 years. The mean follow-up was 39.0 months. Nine hundred seven (35.0%) patients died for all-cause reasons. The mean Hgb at admission was 11.07 ± 1.95 g/dL. Linear multivariate Cox regression models showed Hgb at admission was associated with mortality ([Hazard Ratio] HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.87-0.95, P < 0.0001) after adjusting for confounding factors. However, the linear association was unstable, and nonlinearity was found between Hgb at admission and mortality. The Hgb concentration of 9.8 g/dL was an inflection point. A Hgb at admission < 9.8 g/dL was associated with mortality (HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.74-0.89, P < 0.0001), whereas > 9.8 g/dL was not a risk factor for mortality (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.92-1.04, P = 0.4730).

CONCLUSIONS

The Hgb concentration at admission was nonlinearly associated with mortality of older patients with hip fracture, and Hgb at admission < 9.8 g/dL was a risk predictor of 3-year mortality.

Mapping knowledge landscapes and emerging trends of sonodynamic therapy: A bibliometric and visualized study

Background: Ultrasound-triggered sonodynamic therapy (SDT), as a non-invasive approach, has attracted considerable attention in a wide variety of malignant tumors and other diseases. Over the past 2 decades, the number of scientific publications on SDT has increased rapidly. However, there is still a lack of one comprehensive report that summarizes the global research trends and knowledge landscapes in the field of SDT in detail. Thus, we performed a bibliometric analysis on SDT from 2000 to 2021 to track the current hotspots and highlight future directions. Methods: We collected publications on SDT research from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The annual number of publications and citations, major contributors, popular journals, international collaborations, co-cited references and co-occurrence keywords were analyzed and visualized with CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R-bibliometrix. Results: A total of 701 publications were included. The annual publication output increased from 5 in 2000 to 175 in 2021, and the average growth rate was 18.4%. China was the most productive country with 463 documents (66.05%), and Harbin Medical University was the most prolific institution (N = 73). Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology published the most papers related to SDT. Materials Science, and Chemistry were the research areas receiving the most interest. All the keywords were divided into four different clusters including studies on mechanisms, studies on drug delivery and nanoparticles, studies on cancer therapy, as well as studies on ultrasound and sonosensitizers. In addition to nanomaterials-related studies including nanoparticles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, nanosheets, liposomes, microbubble and TiO₂ nanoparticle, the following research directions such as immunogenic cell death, metal-organic framework, photothermal therapy, hypoxia, tumor microenvironment, chemodynamic therapy, combination therapy, tumor resistance, intensity focused ultrasound, drug delivery, and Staphylococcus aureus also deserve further attention and may continue to explode in the future. Conclusion: SDT has a bright future in the field of cancer treatment, and nanomaterials have increasingly influenced the SDT field with the development of nano-technology. Overall, this comprehensive bibliometric study was the first attempt to analyze the field of SDT, which could provide valuable references for later researchers to better understand the global research trends, hotspots and frontiers in this domain.

Global research trends and hotspots in calcaneal fracture: A bibliometric analysis (2000-2021)

Background

Calcaneal fracture is common and carries high morbidity and disability. Its treatment is therefore of vital concern. Many topics concerning calcaneal fracture remain controversial, and the subject has not yet been well-researched. We aim to analyze and illustrate the trends in development, overall knowledge structure, "hotspots," and research frontiers on the topic of calcaneal fracture.

Methods

Literature relating to calcaneal fracture published between 2000 and 2021 was retrieved from Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) database of the Web of Science. Three bibliometric tools (Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software) were used for analysis and the generation of knowledge maps. Annual trends in publication counts and the relative contributions of different countries, regions, institutions, authors, and journals, as well as keyword clusters, "hot topics," and research frontiers, were analyzed.

Results

A total of 1,687 publications were included in the analysis. The number of calcaneal fracture articles published worldwide each year was highest in 2019, with a total of 128 articles. The United States has made the greatest contribution to the field, with the largest number of publications and the highest H-index. Foot & Ankle International was the most productive journal, publishing a total of 167 articles on calcaneal fracture during the study period. Hebei Medical University of China and the University of California, San Francisco were the most prolific institutions. Professors T. Schepers, S. Rammelt, H. Zwipp, and Y. Z. Zhang have made remarkable contributions to the field. However, the degree of collaboration between researchers and among institutions was relatively low, and took place mainly in Europe and the Americas. All relevant keywords could be categorized into three clusters: studies of internal fixation, studies of fractures, and studies of osteoporosis. A trend of balanced and diversified development could be seen within these clusters. Keywords with ongoing "citation bursts," such as sinus tarsi approach, wound complications, minimally invasive technique, extensile lateral approach, surgical treatment, and plate, may continue to be research "hotspots" in the near future.

Conclusion

Based on current global trends, the number of publications on calcaneal fracture will continue to increase. Topics such as minimally invasive techniques and complications have become important hotspots of research. We recommend enhancing international communication and collaboration for future research in this field.

Artificial intelligence applicated in gastric cancer: A bibliometric and visual analysis via CiteSpace

Objective

This study aimed to analyze and visualize the current research focus, research frontiers, evolutionary processes, and trends of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of gastric cancer using a bibliometric analysis.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database was selected as the data source for this study to retrieve and obtain articles and reviews related to AI in gastric cancer. All the information extracted from the articles was imported to CiteSpace to conduct the bibliometric and knowledge map analysis, allowing us to clearly visualize the research hotspots and trends in this field.

Results

A total of 183 articles published between 2017 and 2022 were included, contributed by 201 authors from 33 countries/regions. Among them, China (47.54%), Japan (21.86%), and the USA (13.11%) have made outstanding contributions in this field, accounting fsor 82.51% of the total publications. The primary research institutions were Wuhan University, Tokyo University, and Tada Tomohiro Inst Gastroenterol and Proctol. Tada (n = 12) and Hirasawa (n = 90) were ranked first in the top 10 authors and co-cited authors, respectively. Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (21 publications; IF 2022, 9.189; Q1) was the most published journal, while Gastric Cancer (133 citations; IF 2022, 8.171; Q1) was the most co-cited journal. Nevertheless, the cooperation between different countries and institutions should be further strengthened. The most common keywords were AI, gastric cancer, and convolutional neural network. The "deep-learning algorithm" started to burst in 2020 and continues till now, which indicated that this research topic has attracted continuous attention in recent years and would be the trend of research on AI application in GC.

Conclusions

Research related to AI in gastric cancer is increasing exponentially. Current research hotspots focus on the application of AI in gastric cancer, represented by convolutional neural networks and deep learning, in diagnosis and differential diagnosis and staging. Considering the great potential and clinical application prospects, the related area of AI applications in gastric cancer will remain a research hotspot in the future.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of research relating to minimally invasive spine surgery reported over the period 2000-2022

Background

Since entering the 21st century, there has been an increasing interest in minimally invasive surgery for spinal diseases, which has led to the continued development of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS), with major breakthroughs in technology and technical skills. However, in recent years, there is little relevant research using bibliometrics to analyze the field of MISS research. The purpose of this study is to sort out the publication situation and topic trends of articles in the field of MISS research from the perspective of bibliometrics.

Methods

The articles and reviews related to MISS from 2000 to 2022 were retrieved and downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC). Visualization and knowledge mapping were performed using three bibliometric tools, including online bibliometric platform, CiteSpace and VOSviewer software. Curve fitting and correlation analysis were performed using Microsoft Excel software. The global research publication output, contributions of countries, institutions, authors, and journals, average citations per item (ACI), Hirsch index (H-index), research hot keywords, etc., in this field were analyzed.

Results

A total of 2384 papers were retrieved, including 2135 original papers and 249 review papers. In the past 22 years, the number of annual publications of MISS research has shown a steady growth trend. China contributed the most papers, and the United States ranked second, but the United States had the highest total citations, and H-index value. The most prolific institutions were Soochow University, Capital Medical University and Wooridul Spine Hospital. In this field, Professors Lee SH, Ahn Y and Yang HL have made significant achievements. However, there is relatively little international collaboration between institutions or researchers. World Neurosurgery is the most published journal on MISS research. According to the keyword co-occurrence analysis, recent keywords mainly focus on researches on minimally invasive modalities, techniques and prognosis, while on the keyword analysis of the ongoing bursts, percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy, lumbar diskectomy, spinal stenosis, recompression, diskectomy, endoscopic spine surgery, laminectomy, transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, etc., will likely continue to be a research hotspot in the near future.

Conclusion

Looking at the temporal trend in the number of publications per year, the number of publications for the MISS study will increase in the near future. China has the highest number of publications, but the US has the highest quality publications. International cooperation needs to be further strengthened. Our findings can provide useful information for the academic community and identify possible research fronts and hotspots in the coming years.
