Abstract
BACKGROUND Researchers have made great efforts to help parents of children with intellectual disabilities overcome the stress and burden. Learning to be resilient is one effective strategy. AIM This study explores resilience among parents of children with intellectual disabilities and how career burnout and self-regulation relate to parents' resilience in mainland China. METHODS The Burnout Scale, the Self-Regulation Scale and the Resilience Scale were administered to 324 parents of children with intellectual disabilities. RESULTS Results showed that career burnout significantly negatively influenced resilience (β = -0.269, p = 0.000), while self-regulation significantly positively influenced resilience (β = 0.754, p = 0.000). In addition, self-regulation moderated the relationships between career burnout and resilience (β = 0.176, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION The findings offer valuable insights for enhancing the resilience of parents of children with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract
PURPOSE Subjects with obesity, especially those seeking bariatric surgery, exhibit high rates of mental disorders and marked psychopathological traits. The primary objective of this prospective, non-interventional study was to investigate whether the presence of different psychiatric disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptomatology and emotional dysregulation influenced weight loss at 1-year follow-up after surgery. METHODS Subjects consecutively referred for pre-surgical evaluation at the Obesity Center of Pisa University Hospital were recruited. Psychiatric diagnoses were made through the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and ADHD symptomatology was assessed with the Wender-Reimherr Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Scale (WRAADDS). Emotional dysregulation was investigated through the WRAADDS and self-report questionnaires. After surgery, weight and obesity-related comorbidities were monitored during follow-up. RESULTS Of the 99 participants recruited, 76 underwent surgery and 65 could be reevaluated 1 year after surgery. Subjects with insufficient weight loss (excess body mass index loss ≤ 53%, n = 15) had more frequent lifetime binge eating disorder (BED) and BED-mood disorders comorbidity than subjects with favorable post-surgical outcome. Additionally, they scored higher on both physician-administered and self-report scales assessing emotional dysregulation, which represents a nuclear symptom of ADHD in adults. At the logistic regression analysis, older age, higher preoperative excess body mass index and greater affective instability were predictors of reduced weight loss at 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSION Emotional dysregulation seems to be associated with a worse outcome after bariatric surgery. Further studies with larger samples and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the influence of different psychiatric disorders and psychopathological traits on post-surgical outcome. Abstract
BACKGROUND The risks and benefits of metabolic and bariatric surgery for patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remain to be investigated. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess short- and long-term outcomes after metabolic and bariatric surgery in patients with previous ADHD compared with matched control individuals. SETTING Registry based. METHODS This 2-staged matched-cohort study included all adults with a body mass index of ≥30 kg/m2 who underwent primary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy from 2007 until 2017 registered in the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry. Patients with prescribed medication for ADHD were matched with control individuals without ADHD with a follow-up of up to 11 years after surgery. RESULTS Among 1431 patients with ADHD and 2862 control individuals (mean body mass index, 42 kg/m2; mean age, 35 years), no difference in weight loss or follow-up attendance over 2 years was seen. ADHD was associated with a higher risk for early postoperative complications (odds ratio [OR] = 1.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.63), self-harm (hazards ratio [HR] = 1.39; 95% CI, 1.11-1.75), and substance abuse (HR = 1.34; 95% CI, 1.16-1.55), while associations with overall mortality (HR = 1.42; 95% CI, .99-2.03), major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (HR = 1.93; 95% CI, .98-3.83), and effects on obesity-related diseases were uncertain. ADHD was associated with a lower health-related quality of life in all aspects before surgery. These differences increased for mental and obesity-related aspects but remained unchanged over time for physical aspects. CONCLUSIONS Compared with patients without ADHD, patients treated pharmacologically for ADHD experience similar weight loss and remission of obesity-related diseases without an increased risk for serious complications but report a lower health-related quality of life and have an increased risk of substance abuse and self-harm. This further emphasizes the need for close follow-up care for this group of individuals.

Abstract
Background For individuals living with chronic conditions like diabetes mellitus and obesity, there is a need for sustainable behavioral strategies and physiologic tools. These tools support identifying and addressing barriers to healthy eating, reducing body mass index (BMI), and building increased physical resilience in real time. Objective To evaluate whether a 12-week learning management system designed to combine nutritional intervention with education and coaching on improving emotional intelligence (EI) could alter cardiometabolic outcomes. Methods This pre-post prospective study enrolled 37 adult volunteers with BMI greater than 25 to participate in a 12-week learning management system. Primary (BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], high-density lipoprotein, and fasting glucose levels) and secondary self-reported outcomes were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks, and 6 months after enrollment using Short Form-36, Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQi), and Whole Health Index (WHI). Linear mixed-effects regression models with random effect were used to estimate changes in primary and secondary outcomes. We adjusted for multiple testing using Holm step-down method. Results BMI and LDL were the only primary endpoints lower at program completion and 6-month follow-up compared to baseline levels (-1.63 and -17.77 mg/dL, respectively; P < .001). Secondary outcomes showing statistically significant improvement from baseline to 6-month follow-up included energy/fatigue (Short Form-36), self-regard (EQi), decision-making (EQi), impulse control (EQi), stress management (EQi), Whole Brain - Form A (WHI), Whole Food - Form C (WHI), and Whole Body - Form D (WHI). Conclusion This study provides preliminary evidence that lifestyle programs combining nutritional interventions and EI can have a significant impact on BMI and LDL. Our study highlights the potential importance of both nutrition and EI in programs targeting diet and lifestyle modification.

Abstract
Background: Addictive-like eating and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are both common among persons seeking treatment for severe obesity. Given that ADHD and addictive-like eating, especially binge eating (BE) and food addiction (FA), are both strongly associated with personality dimensions and emotion dysregulation, it is possible emotional and personality characteristics contribute to the link between addictive-like eating behaviors and ADHD in people with severe obesity. This study aimed to investigate the psychological factors associated with BE and FA in bariatric surgery candidates, and to explore the mediational role of emotional factors (emotion dysregulation and alexithymia) and personality dimensions in the association between ADHD and BE. Method: Two hundred and eighty-two (n = 282) bariatric surgery candidates were recruited during the systematic preoperative psychiatric assessment (University Hospital of Tours, France). We assessed significant BE (Binge Eating Scale), probable adult ADHD (Wender Utah Render Scale and Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale), FA (Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0, YFAS 2.0), emotion dysregulation (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-16), alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20) and personality dimensions (Big Five Inventory). Mediation analyses were performed using the PROCESS macro for IBM SPSS Statistics 22. Results: Prevalence of probable adult ADHD, significant BE and FA were 8.2, 19.1, and 26.6%, respectively. Participants who screened positive for addictive-like eating showed higher prevalence of probable adult ADHD, as well as higher scores on adult and childhood ADHD symptoms. They also reported lower conscientiousness, but higher emotion dysregulation, higher alexithymia, and higher neuroticism. Only BE (as opposed to FA) was also associated with lower scores on agreeableness and openness. Analysis of the association between adult ADHD and BE suggests that emotion dysregulation, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism are total mediators and alexithymia a partial mediator. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a significant association between ADHD and addictive-like eating among bariatric surgery candidates, and also suggest a significant role of emotion dysregulation and personality dimensions in this association. For individuals with ADHD and obesity, eating may be a way to cope with negative emotions, potentially increasing the risk for addictive-like eating behavior.

Abstract
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with disordered eating, especially addictive-like eating behavior (i.e., binge eating, food addiction, loss of control overeating). The exact mechanisms underlying this association are unclear. ADHD and addictive-like eating behavior are both associated with negative affectivity and emotion dysregulation, which we hypothesized are mediators of this relationship. The purpose of this systematic review was to review the evidence related to this hypothesis from studies assessing the relationship between childhood or adulthood ADHD symptomatology, negative affectivity, emotion dysregulation and addictive-like eating behavior. The systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. The literature search was conducted in PubMed and PsycINFO (publication date: January 2015 to August 2020; date of search: 2 September 2020). Out of 403 potentially relevant articles, 41 were retained; 38 publications reported that ADHD and disordered eating or addictive-like eating behavior were significantly associated, including 8 articles that suggested a mediator role of negative affectivity or emotion dysregulation. Sixteen publications reported that the association between ADHD symptomatology and disordered eating or addictive-like eating behavior differed according to gender, eating behavior and ADHD symptoms (hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention). We discuss the practical implications of these findings and directions future research.

Abstract
The objective our study was to carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the impact of attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on bariatric surgery outcomes. Despite the effectiveness of bariatric surgery, about 10 to 20% of patients continue to regain weight after the procedure. New evidence supports that ADHD may be directly associated with obesity and may affect outcomes following bariatric surgery. However, certain psychiatric illnesses, such as ADHD, are rarely screened for, leading to a continued lack of data on the interaction between ADHD and bariatric surgery. A comprehensive literature search for both published and unpublished studies of ADHD and bariatric surgery from 1946 to August 2018 was performed. The search was conducted using the Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases as well as conference abstracts. Our search strategy terms included "(ADHD OR attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) AND (bariatrics OR obesity surgery OR gastric bypass OR gastric sleeve OR Roux-en-Y OR RYGB OR sleeve gastrectomy)" and was limited to human studies in the English language. Preliminary database search of the literature yielded 104 articles after 70 duplicates were removed. A total of five studies with 492 patients were included. The overall ADHD rate was 20.9% with reported rates ranging from 7 to 38%. The weighted mean age was 44.0 ± 10.2 years, the weighted sex was 83.6% female, and the weighted mean follow-up was 22.2 months. Preoperative weighted mean BMI was 43.7 versus a postoperative weighted mean BMI of 34.7. No statistical significance was observed for mean BMI difference between non-ADHD vs. ADHD patients undergoing bariatric surgery (three studies; MD - 2.66; CI - 7.54 to 2.13; p = 0.28). Statistical significance was, however, observed for postoperative follow-up between patients with ADHD vs. non-ADHD subjects (three studies; MD - 7.28; - 13.83 to -0.73; p = 0.03). Patients with ADHD do not have a statistically significant mean BMI difference following bariatric surgery but have a statistically significant reduction in postoperative follow-up versus non-ADHD patients. Targeted strategies aimed at improving clinic attendance for this at-risk ADHD population may improve bariatric outcomes and minimize recidivism rates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bariatric surgery is the most effective weight loss therapy, and recently laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is gaining popularity worldwide. On the other hand, patients undergoing bariatric surgery have a high prevalence of mental disorders. A Japanese nationwide survey reported high prevalence of mental disorders in patients with low percent total weight loss (%TWL) and also in those with high %TWL. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of 1-year %TWL with background mental health status, 3-year outcomes, and nutrition intake in Japanese patients after LSG. METHODS This study was a single-center retrospective database analysis. A total of 89 Japanese patients who underwent LSG and were followed for 3 years were enrolled (mean age 41.9 years, baseline body mass index 44.9, baseline glycosylated hemoglobin, HbA1c, 7.0%). The patients were divided into 3 groups according to 1-year %TWL as follows: ≤19.9% (insufficient group), 20.0-34.9% (average group) and ≥35.0% (excessive group). Psychosocial and nutritional status as well as physical data were collected from all patients. RESULTS The prevalence of mental disorders was 51.7%, and 1-year %TWL was 28.1% in all patients. No significant differences were observed in the changes in body weight and HbA1c between patients with and those without mental disorders. The prevalence of mental disorders was particularly high in the insufficient and excessive groups. In the insufficient group, mood disorders and mental retardation/developmental disorders were frequent, and snacking and eating out habits were often observed. In the excessive group, the frequencies of mood disorders and binge eating were high, and a decrease in skeletal muscle mass due to low protein intake was observed. Furthermore, weight regain was shown 12 months after LSG in both groups. In the average group, there were fewer problems in weight loss outcomes, mental health, nutrition intake and body composition. CONCLUSIONS Psychosocial and nutritional problems were often found not only in patients with insufficient weight loss, but also in those with seemingly "excellent" weight reduction. To improve long-term weight loss outcome and future health, a multidisciplinary approach focusing on mental health and nutrition is essential for patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

The Association between ADHD and Obesity: Intriguing, Progressively More Investigated, but Still Puzzling. Brain Sci 2019; 9:brainsci9100256. Abstract
This narrative review is aimed at presenting the most recent evidence on the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obesity. The review is informed by previous relevant systematic reviews and a search in Pubmed and PsycINFO up to 1 August 2019. Although the association between ADHD and obesity would seem, at first, paradoxical, in the past two decades there has been an increasing number of studies on this topic. The present review shows that there is meta-analytic evidence supporting a significant association between these two conditions, at least in adults. Growing evidence is also being published on the genetic and environmental factors underlying the association. However, the cause–effects paths, as well as the exact mechanisms explaining the association, remain unclear. Additionally, empirical evidence guiding the management/treatment of patients with the two conditions is still limited. Therefore, after almost 20 years from the first report of a link between ADHD and obesity, this association continues to be puzzling.
