Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of anovulation and infertility in women. Inflammation and oxidative stress are considered to be the causes of ovarian dysfunction in PCOS. Dimethyl itaconate, as a macrophage-derived immunometabolite, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, but limited data are available about its effect on female reproductive dysfunctions. The present study aimed to determine the effects of dimethyl itaconate, a cell-permeable derivative of itaconate, on the histological changes, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the ovaries of PCOS rats. In this experimental study, 48 mature female Wistar rats (160-180 g) were randomly divided into the six groups including control, PCOS, PCOS+DMI, PCOS+ metformin, control DMI and control metformin. Following PCOS induction by using testosterone enanthate (1 mg/100 g/day for 35 days), the animals were treated with DMI (50 mg/kg) or metformin (300 mg/kg) for 30 days. At the end of the experimental period, the insulin resistance markers (serum insulin and glucose concentrations, and the homeostasis model assessment of basal insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), oxidative stress index (OSI), and inflammatory cytokines were measured. The process of Folliculogenesis was evaluated by histological examination of the ovary. The results showed that DMI improved insulin resistance and decreased TNF- and IL-1β levels and OSI in the ovarian tissue of rats following androgen-induced PCOS. It also improved steroidogenesis and Folliculogenesis by reducing cystic follicles and ovarian tissue structure. Results indicated that DMI may be a potential candidate to ameliorate PCOS adverse effects by reducing insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress and restoring ovarian Folliculogenesis.

Abstract
Aspects of sleep change across the menstrual cycle in some women. Poorer sleep quality in the premenstrual phase and menstruation is common in women with premenstrual symptoms or painful menstrual cramps. Although objective sleep continuity remains unchanged across the regular, asymptomatic menstrual cycle, activity in the sleep electroencephalogram varies, with a prominent increase in sleep spindle activity in the postovulatory luteal phase, when progesterone is present, relative to the follicular phase. Menstrual cycle phase, reproductive stage, and menstrual-related disorders should be considered when assessing women's sleep complaints.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disease characterized by ovulatory dysfunction, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology and causing various reproductive, metabolic, cardiovascular, oncological, and psychological complications. Recent meta-analyses and systemic reviews showed that PCOS increases the risk factor for various cardio-metabolic complications like insulin resistance, type II diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and endothelial dysfunction. In addition to these, it was suggested that chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress are the underlying mechanisms of PCOS-mediated metabolic consequences and might trigger cardio-metabolic risk in women with PCOS. At this point, there is substantial evidence to suggest that various non-nutrient food components modulate cardio-metabolic health together with inflammation and oxidative stress. RECENT FINDINGS Increasing the intake of dietary polyphenols might reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and thus alleviate the risk of metabolic, endothelial, and cardiovascular disorders. Nowadays, there are an increasing number of studies related to the effects of dietary polyphenols on PCOS and its accompanying cardio-metabolic disturbances. Currently, there is a cumulative number of studies connected to the effects of dietary polyphenols on PCOS and accompanying cardio-metabolic disturbances. However, there is a lack of knowledge in combining the probable mechanisms of dietary polyphenols on PCOS and related cardio-metabolic consequences. Thus, the effects of dietary polyphenols on PCOS and accompanying cardio-metabolic disturbances need to be discussed and evaluated with underlying mechanisms. Consequently, this review was written to reveal the potential effects of dietary polyphenols on PCOS and related metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors in all their aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To summarise the relationship between Anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) levels and cardiometabolic status in different populations. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Embase were searched for retrieving observational studies published up to February 2022 investigating the relationship between AMH level and cardiometabolic status. RESULTS Of 3,643 studies retrieved from databases, a total of 37 observational studies were included in this review. The majority of the included studies revealed an inverse association between AMH and lipid profiles, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and a positive correlation with high-density lipoprotein (HDL). While some studies have revealed a significant inverse association between AMH and glycemic parameters, including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR, others found no such relationships. There is also an inconsistency among studies regarding the association of AMH with adiposity indices and blood pressure. Evidence indicates a significant association between AMH and some vascular markers, such as intima-media thickness and coronary artery calcification. Of 3 studies evaluating the relationship between AMH and cardiovascular events, two studies showed an inverse relationship between AMH levels and cardiovascular (CVD), whereas another study showed no significant association. CONCLUSIONS The results of this systematic review suggest that serum AMH levels can be associated with CVD risk. This may provide new insight into the use of AMH concentrations as a predictive marker for assessing the risk of cardiovascular disease, although more well-design longitudinal studies are still necessary for this area. Future studies on this topic will hopefully provide an opportunity to run a meta-analysis; it will increase the persuasiveness of this interpretation.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the transgenerational effects of tributyltin exposure on rat neurodevelopment in male offspring and the potential mechanisms. Neonatal female rats were exposed to the environmental level of tributyltin and then mated with nonexposed males after sexual maturity to produce the F1 generation. The F1 generation (with primordial germ cell exposure) was mated with nonexposed males to produce nonexposed offspring (the F2 and F3 generations). Neurodevelopmental indicators and behavior were observed for the F1, F2, and F3 generations during postnatal days 1-25 and 35-56, respectively. We found premature eye-opening and delayed visual positioning in newborn F1 rats and anxiety and cognitive deficits in prepubertal F1 male rats. These neurodevelopmental impacts were also observed in F2 and F3 males. Additionally, F1-F3 males exhibited increased serotonin and dopamine levels and a loose arrangement of neurons in the hippocampus. We also observed a reduction in the expression of genes involved in intercellular adhesion and increased DNA methylation of the Dsc3 promoter in F1-F3 males. We concluded that tributyltin exposure led to transgenerational effects on neurodevelopment via epigenetic reprogramming in male offspring. These findings provide insights into the risks of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring from parents exposed to tributyltin.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to compensatory hyperinsulinemia with consequent metabolic abnormalities in women. In this study, DLBS3233 and Metformin were used to be tested. DLBS3233 itself is the new insulin-sensitizing drug, a combination-bioactive-fraction derived from two Indonesian herbals, Lagerstroemia speciosa and Cinnamomum burmannii. DLBS3233 alone and in combination with metformin were evaluated for efficacy and safety in insulin-resistant women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods A randomized, double-blind, 3-arm, double-dummy, non-inferiority, and also a controlled clinical study was conducted at the Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Indonesia, between October 2014 and February 2019. The study involved 60 female subjects (with 20 female subjects in each group) that had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Treatment I consists of one placebo capsule twice per day and one 100 mg DLBS3233 capsule once per day. Treatment II consists of one placebo caplet once per day and one 750 mg Metformin XR caplet twice per day. Treatment III consists of one 750 mg Metformin XR caplet twice per day and one 100 mg DLBS3233 capsule once per day. Results In treatment I, the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels were 3.55, 3.59, and 3.80 at pretest, 3 months, and 6 months after intervention, respectively. In treatment II, the HOMA-IR level were 4.00, 2.21, and 4.40 at pretest, 3 months, and 6 months after intervention respectively. In treatment III, the HOMA-IR levels were 3.30, 2.86, and 3.12 at pretest, 3 months, and 6 months after intervention, respectively. There was no apparent difference existed in the fasting plasma glucose (FPG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, ferriman-gallwey scores (FGS), and safety assessment on vital signs and laboratory examinations (liver function and renal function) in all groups. Conclusion Either DLBS3233 alone or the DLBS3233/Metformin combination showed no significant efficacy and did not negatively affect cardiovascular function, liver and kidney function in PCOS subjects. Abstract
Objectives Human Polycystic Ovary/Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a frequent endocrine pathophysiology among women of fertile age, is associated with woman's lifespan endocrine, metabolic and psychological implications. Long-term usage side effects of allopathic strategies and their low efficacy made complementary medicine treatments a relevant subject for these patients. The main aim of this work is to review the efficiency of the acupuncture treatment reported in the latest studies on literature regarding PCOS patients. Methods A comprehensive literature search, in English language, about the use of acupuncture on the management of PCOS, was conducted in October 2020 using EBSCO, Cochrane, PubMed, Medline, Embase, databases for randomised and non-randomised controlled trials between 2015 and 2020 (09/2015-10/2020), following the PRISMA protocol. Results This research led us to an analysis, according to PICOS, of six final papers selected among 178 in total. The articles addressed distinct aspects of the PCOS condition, diverse acupuncture techniques and different main and secondary outcomes in agreement to the respective main objective. According to this review, acupuncture seems to be useful for the treatment of this debilitating and chronic health condition which affects millions of women worldwide, many of them part of the workforce in their community. Conclusion Despite of the display of these positive results addressing acupuncture treatments to manage PCOS major symptoms - whether they are reproductive, metabolic, or mental health features - more research is urgent. Randomized, double blinded controlled trials with improved quality design and following STRICTA and/or CONSORT recommendations are necessary to engage acupuncture as a standardized and scientific validated technique in PCOS condition.

Abstract
The polycystic ovarian syndrome affects many women today. Previous research has demonstrated a direct link between it and serious ailments such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and infertility. Originally thought to be a reproductive disorder, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is now understood to be a metabolic and psychological disorder. Women of reproductive age suffering from PCOS undergo hormonal imbalances in which progesterone, insulin, and testosterone are produced in excess. PCOS exhibits a variety of characteristics as well as a heterogeneity of symptoms, including acne, hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, irregular menstruation, infertility, obesity, and mood disorders like despair and anxiety. Chronic anovulation, hyperandrogenism, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and an elevated threat of coronary artery disease are some of its defining characteristics. PCOS develops due to interacting genetic and environmental factors. From a gynaecological curiosity, it grew into a multisystem endocrinopathy. It is fascinating to learn how hormonal issues result in gynaecological problems. Insulin resistance, compensatory hyperinsulinism, and an increase in ovarian androgenic hyperresponsiveness to circulating insulin are all directly related to hyperandrogenism and anovulation. Independent of weight, insulin resistance is more common with PCOS and plays a crucial role in the syndrome's metabolic and reproductive complications. Anovulation, polycystic ovaries, and elevated luteinizing hormones, which increase circulating androgen, are all caused by a reduction in follicle-stimulating hormone. High androgen levels cause hyperinsulinemia, which leads cells to become insulin resistant and makes PCOS patients more likely to develop diabetes mellitus. Later research established that women with polycystic ovarian shape and persistent anovulation are the only ones susceptible to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is thus a distinct characteristic of the condition. The purpose of this review paper is to investigate how PCOS ultimately results in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
(1) Background: Human polycystic ovary/ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is linked to endocrine, metabolic, and psychological complications. We propose a randomized controlled pilot study for an acupuncture protocol regarding the management of PCOS symptoms based on TCM diagnosis; (2) Methods: We will randomly allocate 120 women diagnosed with PCOS into two groups. The study group will be treated with acupuncture for points known to act upon the autonomous regulation of the hormonal, metabolic and emotional components. (3) Results and Conclusions: We expect to provide evidence of high methodological quality related to the effects and safety of an acupuncture protocol based on the perspective of a TCM diagnostic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Adequate dietary intakes of essential micronutrients are critical to prevent insulin resistance (IR)-related diseases. Even though the excess calorie intake linked with obesity is also associated with such diseases, no previous studies evaluated the importance of meeting the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of micronutrients in relation to calorie intake in those at risk for developing IR. METHODS AND RESULTS We evaluated the relationship between the ability or failure to meet the DRI of micronutrients in relation to daily calorie intake in 463 childbearing-age women with a higher prevalence of IR. 56-65% women met the DRIs for vitamin B12, vitamin C, thiamine, and riboflavin while only 0%-49% met the DRIs for folate, pyridoxine, niacin, pantothenic acid, total carotene, vitamins A, D and E by consuming an acceptable number of calories. Women who met the DRIs of folate and vitamin C within acceptable daily calorie intakes were 59% and 66% less likely to have higher Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) compared to women who did not. CONCLUSIONS Understanding the mechanisms that explain our findings will be of value to address IR-associated with exposure to high calorie/low-micronutrient dense diets consumed by childbearing-age women. Since there is a global recognition that IR has been increasing in adults and children, similar studies of this nature in pregnant women at risk for IR will provide much needed data to assess the burden of such adverse dietary habits in the offspring. Our study approach may form the foundation for such studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovarian syndrome has emerged as a cardiometabolic disorder and aim of this study was to evaluate various surrogate indices and their diagnostic potential to determine the most convenient and cost-effective marker of IR, CVD, and MetS in these women. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-five PCOS women and 45 age matched healthy women were enrolled. Measures included anthropometric and biochemical parameters, BMI, WHR, WHtR, BAI, VAI, LAP, HOMA-IR, and lipid profile. RESULTS LAP has highest AUC value 0.781 with cut-off value = 39.73 (sensitivity = 75% and specificity = 79.5%) for predicting IR and AUC value 0.83 with cut-off value = 35.63 (sensitivity = 94.4% and specificity = 77.3%) for predicting MetS in women with PCOS. LAP had statistically strong positive correlation with WC, BMI, WHR, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, TC, TG, and SBP. CONCLUSIONS LAP is a powerful and reliable marker for assessment of IR, CVD, and MetS risk in young Indian women with PCOS.

Abstract
Objectives. In this systematic review, the effects of acupuncture combined with moxibustion on reproductive and metabolic outcomes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were evaluated. Methods. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing acupuncture combined with moxibustion + basic treatment (experimental group) versus basic treatment alone (control group) for treating PCOS were identified from English and Chinese databases up to November 3, 2021. Outcomes related to pregnancy, ovulation, miscarriage, sex hormones, and metabolic disorders were of interest. In the meta-analysis, risk ratios (RRs) and mean differences (MDs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used as effect measures. Results. Twenty-five RCTs (n = 1991) were included. The pooled results showed that the experimental group had significant increases in the pregnancy rate (RR 1.81, 95% CI 1.58 to 2.08) and ovulation rate (RR 1.31, 95% CI 1.22 to 1.40) and decreases in the miscarriage rate (RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.28 to 0.73), and ovarian volume (MD −0.75 cm3, 95% CI −1.30 to −0.20). In the experimental group, improvements in the luteinizing hormone (LH) level, the LH-to-follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratio, total testosterone level, fasting insulin level, and body mass index, but not in FSH, oestradiol, or dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels, were significantly greater. All reported adverse events were mild. Based on the limitations of risk of bias, inconsistency, imprecision, and/or publication bias, the level of evidence was judged to be moderate for the pregnancy rate, ovulation rate, miscarriage rate, LH level, and LH/FSH ratio and very low for the other outcomes. Conclusion. Among patients with PCOS, using acupuncture combined with moxibustion as a complementary therapy to basic treatments can improve pregnancy, ovulation, and miscarriage rates, the levels some sex hormones, and metabolic indicators, with good safety. Additionally, this combination therapy may have no effect on the FSH, oestradiol, or dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate level.

Abstract
Metabolic risk factors such as obesity are considered major obstacles to female fertility. Chronic infertility imposes psychological and social burdens on women because infertility violates societal gender roles. Although the prevalence of obesity among women is expected to increase in the future, the relevance of metabolic status for fertility is still underestimated. However, the assessment of metabolic risk factors is highly relevant for understanding fertility disorders and improving infertility treatment. This narrative review discusses the associations of metabolic risk factors (e.g. obesity, female athlete triad, oxidative stress) with significant infertility. An electronic search was conducted for studies published between 2006 and 2020 in Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and related databases. In total, this search identified 19,309 results for polycystic ovary syndrome, 28,969 results for endometriosis, and only 1611 results for idiopathic and/or unknown infertility. For the present narrative review, 50 relevant studies were included: 19 studies were on obesity, 24 studies investigated the female athlete triad, and seven studies addressed other risk factors, including reactive oxygen species. This narrative review confirms the direct impact of obesity on female infertility, while the effect of other risk factors needs to be confirmed by large-scale population studies.

Abstract
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age and the main cause of female infertility, but there is no universal drug for PCOS therapy. As a predominant dietary isoflavone present in soybeans, genistein (GEN) possesses estrogenic and antioxidative properties, but limited information is available regarding its therapeutic potential and underlying molecular mechanism in PCOS. In this study, we found that GEN might restore the estrous cycle of PCOS mice and ameliorate the elevation of circulating T, AMH and LH levels as well as LH/FSH ratios along with reduced cystic follicles, indicating the importance of GEN in PCOS therapy. Meanwhile, GEN improved the ovarian secretion function of PCOS mice and attenuated oxidative damage of the ovary through enhancing its antioxidant capability dependent on ER. Supplementation of GEN improved the defect of the ATP level and mitochondrial membrane potential, indicating the significance of GEN in preventing mitochondrial dysfunction. Further analysis demonstrated that GEN via ER heightened the expression of Nrf2 and Foxo1 whose blockage antagonized the defence of GEN on the secretory and mitochondrial functions of ovarian granulosa cells followed by the limited antioxidant capability and increased intracellular ROS level. Moreover, nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity of Nrf2 presented a notable enhancement after exposure to GEN. Addition of the Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 hampered the GEN induction of Foxo1. Nrf2 might directly bind to the antioxidant response element of the Foxo1 promoter region. Collectively, GEN might exhibit therapeutic potential for PCOS mice via the ER-Nrf2-Foxo1-ROS pathway.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with insulin resistance and elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Chronic inflammation has been observed in PCOS in several studies but there is also opposing evidence and a dearth of research in Indians. Objective To estimate chronic inflammation in PCOS and find its relationship with appropriate anthropometric and biochemical parameters. Materials and Methods Chronic inflammation was assessed in 30 women with PCOS (Group A) and 30 healthy controls (Group B) with highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), and platelet microparticles (PMP). In group A, the relationship of chronic inflammation with insulin resistance, waist hip ratio (WHR) serum testosterone, and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) were examined. Results In group A, the hsCRP, TNFα, and PMP were significantly elevated compared to group B. However, IL-6 level was similar between the groups. In group A, PMP showed a significant positive correlation with waist-hip ratio and serum testosterone. IL-6 showed a significant positive correlation with insulin sensitivity and significant negative correlation with insulin resistance and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase. Conclusion PCOS is associated with chronic inflammation and PMP correlates positively with central adiposity and biochemical hyperandrogenism in women with PCOS.

Abstract
CONTEXT Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disease with different subtypes and unclear etiology. Among the frequent comorbidities are autoimmune diseases, suggesting that autoantibodies (aAb) may be involved in PCOS pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE As the gonadal axis often is dysregulated, we tested the hypothesis that aAb to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRH-R) are of diagnostic value in PCOS. DESIGN An in vitro assay for quantifying aAb to the GnRH-R (GnRH-R-aAb) was established by using a recombinant fusion protein of full-length human GnRH-R and firefly luciferase. A commercial rabbit antiserum to human GnRH-R was used for standardization. Serum samples of control subjects and different cohorts of European PCOS patients (n = 1051) were analyzed. RESULTS The novel GnRH-R-aAb assay was sensitive, and signals were linear on dilution when tested with the commercial GnRH-R antiserum. Natural GnRH-R-aAb were detected in one control (0.25%) and two PCOS samples (0.31%), and 12 samples were slightly above the threshold of positivity. The identification of samples with positive GnRH-R-aAb was reproducible and the signals showed no matrix interferences. CONCLUSION Natural GnRH-R-aAb are present in a very small fraction of adult control and PCOS subjects of European decent. Our results do not support the hypothesis that the GnRH-R constitutes a relevant autoantigen in PCOS.

Abstract
PURPOSE In healthy adults, the impairment of vascular function associated with prolonged sitting can be mitigated with intermittent brief bouts of activity. It is unknown whether these benefits extend to women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in whom vascular function is typically impaired and sitting time is high. We examined the acute effect of regularly interrupting sitting time with brief simple resistance activities (SRA) on vascular function in PCOS. METHODS In a randomized crossover trial, 13 physically inactive women with PCOS (18-45 yr) completed two 3.5-h conditions: 1) uninterrupted sitting (SIT) and 2) sitting interrupted by 3-min bouts of SRA every 30 min. Femoral artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), resting shear rate, and resting blood flow were measured at 0, 1, and 3.5 h. RESULTS Mean resting femoral shear rate, averaged across the 3.5 h, significantly increased in the SRA condition relative to the SIT condition (40.1 ± 6.1 vs 62.8 ± 6.1 s-1, P < 0.0001). In addition, mean resting blood flow also significantly increased across the 3.5 h for SRA relative to SIT (45.0 ± 9.8 vs 72.8 ± 9.9 mL·min-1, P < 0.0001). There were no differences between conditions in the temporal change in femoral artery FMD across 3.5 h (Ptime-condition > 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION Frequently interrupting sitting with SRA acutely increased resting shear rate and blood flow in women with PCOS but did not alter FMD. With sedentary behavior increasing in prevalence, longer-term studies of similar interventions to reduce and break up sitting time are warranted.

Abstract
Evidence of clinical and/or biochemical androgen excess poses a unique differential in postmenopausal women. Some signs and symptoms of postmenopausal hyperandrogenism can be normal and attributed to the natural aging process. However, the causes of androgen excess in this group include both nontumorous and tumorous causes. Treatment of androgen excess may improve both quality of life and long-term metabolic outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent metabolic disorder in reproductive-age women. It is indeed a multifactorial condition evidenced by ovarian dysfunction, hyperandrogenaemia, infertility, hormonal imbalance and chronic anovulation. Experimental evidence infers that PCOS women are prone to cardiovascular problems and insulin resistance. PURPOSE To furnish the details about the association of inflammatory markers in PCOS. DESIGN An extensive literature search on PubMed, science direct and google scholar has been performed for articles about PCOS and inflammation in PCOS. A comprehensive analysis using original articles, reviews, systemic and meta-analysis was conducted for better understanding the relationship between inflammatory cytokines and PCOS. RESULTS The inflammatory markers perform a substantial part in managing the functions of the ovary. Any disturbances in their levels can lead to ovarian dysfunction. Inflammatory markers are associated with PCOS pathogenesis. The interplay between inflammatory cytokines in the PCOS ovary strongly implies that inflammation is one of the most potent risk factors of PCOS. CONCLUSION Inflammatory markers have a significant role in regulating the ovary. This manuscript highlights the significance of metabolic and inflammatory markers with PCOS. Since PCOS is always considered as a metabolic disorder, researchers can also consider focusing on the relationship between the inflammatory markers in PCOS to establish a new treatment or management of the disease and to improve women's health.

This study sought to determine the prevalence of anxiety/depression-like behaviors among women with PCOS and to identify factors associated with these behaviors. This study was a secondary analysis of three studies performed on Chinese women who were aged 18 to 40 and diagnosed with PCOS according to the modified Rotterdam criteria. We obtained 802 useable responses for the self-rating anxiety scale and 798 responses for the self-rating depression scale. The prevalence of anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors among women with PCOS was 26.1% (209/802) and 52.0% (415/798), respectively. Anxiety-like behaviors were associated with age, body image-related factors (including body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio), and hyperandrogenism-related factors (including free androgen index and hirsutism). Depression-like behaviors were associated with age, body image-related factors, hyperandrogenism-related factors, and metabolic factors (including fasting insulin, fasting plasma glucose, and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance). Body image-related factors and hyperandrogenism-related factors were related to both anxiety-like behaviors and depression-like behaviors in both infertile and fertile PCOS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder worldwide. We aimed to examine the associations of two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) biomarkers in the peripheral blood, mtDNA copy number (CN), and mtDNA4977 deletion rate (DR), with PCOS in a clinical setting. METHODS We performed a study involving 263 women with PCOS and 326 age-matched controls between June 2015 and June 2019. The mtDNA CN and mtDNA4977 DR were measured using multiplex probe-based qPCR. The associations of the mtDNA CN and mtDNA4977 DR with the risk of PCOS were estimated using logistic regression. RESULTS Analysis of the associations between mtDNA biomarkers and PCOS indicate that the mtDNA CN (P = 0.003) and mtDNA4977 DR (P < 0.001) in PCOS patients were significantly higher than those in the controls. After adjusting for the body mass index, luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio, and testosterone level, only higher mtDNA4977 DR was associated with PCOS (odds ratio 1.053, 95% confidence interval 1.024 to 1.083; P < 0.001). The linear dose-response trends of the mtDNA4977 DR were also supported by the quartile analysis. CONCLUSION Multivariable models suggest that mtDNA4977 DR levels are strongly associated with PCOS and represent an independent risk factor for PCOS. Further investigation of the utility of mtDNA as a biomarker for PCOS is warranted.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disease accompanied by energetic metabolic imbalance. Because the etiology of PCOS is complex and remains unclear, there is no effective and specific treatment for PCOS. It is often accompanied by various metabolic disorders such as obesity, insulin resistances, and others. Activated brown adipose tissue (BAT) consumes excess energy via thermogenesis, which has positive effects on energy metabolism. Our previous research and that of others indicates that BAT activity is decreased in PCOS patients, and exogenous BAT transplantation can improve PCOS rodents. Notably however, it is difficult to apply this therapeutic strategy in clinical practice. Therapeutic strategies of enhancing endogenous BAT activity and restoring whole-body endocrine homeostasis may be more meaningful for PCOS treatment. In the current study, the dehydroepiandrosterone-induced PCOS rat was exposed to low temperature for 20 days. The results show that cold treatment could reverse acyclicity of the estrous cycle and reduce circulating testosterone and luteinizing hormone in PCOS rats by activating endogenous BAT. It also significantly reduced the expression of steroidogenic enzymes as well as inflammatory factors in the ovaries of PCOS rats. Histological investigations revealed that cold treatment could significantly reduce ovary cystic follicles and increase corpus luteum, indicating that ovulation was recovered to a normal level. Concordant with these results, cold treatment also improved fertility in PCOS rats. Collectively, these findings suggest that cold treatment could be a novel therapeutic strategy for PCOS.

Abstract
PURPOSE Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), considered a lifelong condition, manifests mainly as a cluster of hyperandrogenic symptoms during the early reproductive years, with the affected woman gradually developing an adverse cardiometabolic profile over the years. However, some data point to the possibility of differences in the evolution of PCOS according to a woman's weight. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the metabolic and hormonal profiles of women with PCOS over time. METHODS A total of 763 lean women with PCOS (BMI 20-25 kg/m2) and 376 controls were included. The study group was further divided into three age groups representing women post-adolescence, of reproductive age, and of late reproductive age. All subjects were assessed clinically, biochemically, and hormonally. RESULTS Waist circumference, lipids, androgens, and insulin resistance index (homeostasis model assessment of IR index (HOMA-IR)) were significantly higher in the PCOS group compared with controls. Age subgroup analysis showed a progressive decrease of HOMA-IR and waist circumference, and lipid levels were comparable between PCOS and controls in all age groups. Androgens remained significantly higher in PCOS, but they gradually decreased through time. A significant negative association of age with waist circumference, androgens, insulin, and HOMA-IR was revealed. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis disclosed a strong correlation of HOMA-IR with age (p = 0.014, β - 0.19, SE coefficient 0.008) as a single parameter or in combination with total cholesterol (TC) (p < 0.001, age: β - 0.023, SE 0.10; TC: β 0.084, SE 0.027). CONCLUSION Insulin resistance, androgens, and lipids are gradually improved in an age-dependent manner in lean PCOS women. We hypothesize that if these women do not gain weight with the passage of time, there is a high probability that their cardiometabolic risk will be attenuated.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine and metabolic disorder prevalent in females of reproductive age; insulin resistance (IR) is the major pathogenic driver. Pharmacology is a basic option for PCOS therapy; traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as a significant part of complementary and alternative medicine, has a long history in the clinical management of PCOS. Cangfudaotan decoction (CFD) has been used clinically for gynaecological diseases especially PCOS. In this study, first, chemical components in CFD were clarified using UPLC-Q/TOF-MS analysis. Then, an animal model of PCOS was established, granular cells were also isolated from the rats with PCOS, and CFD was administrated at different dosages in PCOS rats and granular cells, to investigate the therapeutic effect and mechanisms of CFD for PCOS treatment. The result showed that CFD treatment is effective in PCOS rats and granulosa cells. CFD was able to improve IR, restore the serum hormone levels, inhibit the inflammatory cytokines in PCOS rat, and alleviate ovary morphological injury and apoptosis in PCOS rats. In granulosa cells of PCOS, the result showed that the cell viability was improved, and cell apoptosis was inhibited after CFD administration. Further experiments suggested that CDF improves IR, follicular development, cell apoptosis, and inflammatory microenvironment, and this was associated to the regulation of IGF-1-PI3K/Akt-Bax/Bcl-2 pathway-mediated gene expression. Given that CFD sufficiently suppresses insulin resistance and improves follicular development in this study, exploring these mechanisms might help to optimize the therapeutic treatment of CFD in PCOS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Results of studies focusing on chronic kidney disease (CKD) among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are insufficient and controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence rate of CKD in women with PCOS, compared to a control group of healthy women. METHODS This study was a population-based cohort study conducted from among 1460 reproductive-age women including 156 women with PCOS and 1304 controls. Incidence rates per 1000 person-years of follow-up were calculated for PCOS and control groups. Cox proportional hazards regression with age as the time-scale was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals for developing CKD in relation to PCOS in both univariable and multivariable models. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12.9 years, 330 new cases of CKD were identified, including 25 PCOS women (14.8 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI, 10-22) and 305 healthy controls (21.5 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI, 19.2-24.1). The results of the Cox model showed that the risk of CKD among women with PCOS and healthy women is comparable and women with PCOS did not have a higher risk of developing CKD compared to healthy women (unadjusted HR: 0.883; 95% CI: 0.587-1.328; P = .551). The results remained unchanged after adjustment for potential confounders of smoking status, BMI, hypertension and diabetes at baseline and follow-up of study (multiple adjusted HR: 0.911; 95% CI: 0.600-1.383; P = .661). CONCLUSION Our population-based study with a long-term follow-up period showed that the risk of CKD in PCOS patients was similar to the general female population. Large studies, with long-term follow-up and more diverse phenotypes, are needed to confirm the findings.

Abstract
Insulin resistance (IR), defined as an attenuated biological response to circulating insulin, is a fundamental defect in obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), and is also linked to a wide spectrum of pathological conditions, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), cognitive impairment, endothelial dysfunction, chronic kidney disease (CKD), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and some endocrine tumors, including breast cancer. In obesity, the unbalanced production of pro- and anti-inflammatory adipocytokines can lead to the development of IR and its related metabolic complications, which are potentially reversible through weight-loss programs. The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), characterized by high consumption of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), nuts, red wine, vegetables and other polyphenol-rich elements, has proved to be associated with greater improvement of IR in obese individuals, when compared to other nutritional interventions. Also, recent studies in either experimental animal models or in humans, have shown encouraging results for insulin-sensitizing nutritional supplements derived from MedDiet food sources in the modulation of pathognomonic traits of certain IR-related conditions, including polyunsaturated fatty acids from olive oil and seeds, anthocyanins from purple vegetables and fruits, resveratrol from grapes, and the EVOO-derived, oleacein. Although the pharmacological properties and clinical uses of these functional nutrients are still under investigation, the molecular mechanism(s) underlying the metabolic benefits appear to be compound-specific and, in some cases, point to a role in gene expression through an involvement of the nuclear high-mobility group A1 (HMGA1) protein.

Abstract
NEW FINDINGS What is the central question of this study? What are the potential therapeutic roles of ginsenoside Rb1 and hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). What is the main finding and its importance? HSYA restored the oestrous cycles of PCOS mice, reduced follicular cysts in ovaries and rescued abnormal hormone secretion; ginsenoside Rb1 did not ameliorate the main symptoms of PCOS mice. HSYA alleviated oxidative stress along with an enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activity. This highlights a potential role of HSYA in PCOS therapy. ABSTRACT Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disease resulting in female infertility. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) and ginsenoside Rb1 have been shown to have antioxidant properties, but little is known about their impact in PCOS. Here dehydroepiandrosterone was used to induce PCOS in a mouse model that was characterized by an irregular oestrous cycle, cystic follicles and an elevated serum testosterone level. Supplementation of HSYA restored the oestrous cycle of PCOS mice, reduced follicular cysts in PCOS mouse ovaries and brought about a decline in serum testosterone level, while ginsenoside Rb1 did not ameliorate the above symptoms of PCOS mice. After HSYA treatment, there was elevation of serum oestradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone and anti-Müllerian hormone levels and a reduction of follicle-stimulating hormone level, but ginsenoside Rb1 only rescued the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and anti-Müllerian hormone. Further analysis evidenced that HSYA reversed the expression of steroid hormone secretion-related genes Star, Hsd3b1, Cyp11a1 and Cyp19a1. In PCOS mice HSYA weakened the elevation of ovarian malondialdehyde, which is regarded as a biomarker for oxidative stress. Moreover, HSYA improved reduced glutathione content accompanied by a simultaneous increase in reduced to oxidized glutathione ratio, and enhanced the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Collectively, HSYA exerted beneficial effects on PCOS mice by restoring hormone secretion and alleviating oxidative stress.

Abstract
AIMS Despite the very clear association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and dysglycemia, few studies have explored the continuum of glycemic alterations leading from minor glucose abnormalities to overt diabetes. The purpose of this review is to trace the natural history of glycemic alteration in women with PCOS. METHODS We performed a literature review without time limit until August 2019. Inclusion criteria were studies addressing the association between impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose or type 2 diabetes (T2D) and PCOS with at least an English abstract. The exclusion criteria were no PCOS or impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose or T2D as outcome. The outcomes of interest were the onset of impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fasting glucose, T2D, and the progression from impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose to T2D. RESULTS Healthy diet and physical activity are the first-line therapy for PCOS. Treatment with metformin was associated with significant lower 2-hour postload glucose levels and with reduction in fasting glucose when compared to placebo. Thiazolidinediones were more effective in reducing fasting glucose levels compared to placebo. Metformin and pioglitazone treatments showed similar effects on fasting glucose levels. The sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor empagliflozin did not show differences in metabolic parameters when compared to metformin. The combination therapy with metformin plus the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist liraglutide was associated with significant improvements in basal and postload glucose levels compared with only liraglutide. Likewise, a combination therapy with the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor saxagliptin and metformin demonstrated superiority versus metformin in fasting glucose and oral glucose tolerance test normalization. Myo-inositol supplementation was associated with lower insulin levels, glucose levels, and insulin resistance when compared with placebo, metformin, or estrogen treatments. CONCLUSIONS The use of insulin-sensitizing agents, such as metformin and inositols, along with lifestyle interventions may improve the metabolic profile in PCOS women.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinological disorder of fertile-aged women. Several adverse pregnancy outcomes and abnormalities of the placenta have been associated with PCOS. By using quantitative label-free proteomics we investigated whether changes in the plasma proteome of pregnant women with PCOS could elucidate the mechanisms behind the pathologies observed in PCOS pregnancies. A total of 169 proteins with ≥2 unique peptides were detected to be differentially expressed between women with PCOS (n = 7) and matched controls (n = 20) at term of pregnancy, out of which 35 were significant (p-value < 0.05). A pathway analysis revealed that networks related to humoral immune responses, inflammatory responses, cardiovascular disease and cellular growth and proliferation were affected by PCOS. Classification of cases and controls was carried out using principal component analysis, orthogonal projections on latent structure-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), hierarchical clustering, self-organising maps and ROC-curve analysis. The most significantly enriched proteins in PCOS were properdin and insulin-like growth factor II. In the dataset, properdin had the best predictive accuracy for PCOS (AUC = 1). Additionally, properdin abundances correlated with AMH levels in pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a frequent female reproductive endocrine disease. It has been associated with a number of severe reproductive and metabolic abnormalities. However, there are still open questions especially regarding the best long-term management. METHODS We summarized the literature focused on the symptoms and negative long-term consequences of untreated PCOS and the existing options for the treatment. We reviewed the Pubmed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases and the relevant literature for the last 20 years. Included in this review also are new results of own (published) research and own experience from treating daily more than 100 PCOS patients. RESULTS Obesity is one of the most common findings. It can cause abnormal ovulations which can lead to infertility. Important long-term consequences can be adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is an agreement that the risk of endometrial cancer can be increased. Insulin resistance, important within the pathophysiology of PCOS, predisposes patients to metabolic dysfunction and increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Lifestyle modifications including dietary changes, exercise and weight loss are first-line interventions for many patients. Well known drug treatments such as metformin, oral contraceptives, etc. should be selected according to the individual situation and patients' needs. Regarding newer methods in the long-term management of PCOS, we found that orlistat may help to achieve weight loss and to improve lipid and glucose metabolism. CONCLUSION In addition to pharmacological interventions, long-term standardized individualized management of PCOS patients is needed to achieve fertility and to reduce the risk of metabolic related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bariatric surgery has been widely used for the treatment of obesity and its related metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), hypertension, and sleep apnea syndrome. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine metabolic disease; however, little attention has been paid to the efficacy of bariatric surgery on PCOS. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of bariatric surgery on obese PCOS patients. SETTING A systematic review and meta-analysis at a university hospital. METHODS Online databases were searched for all studies reporting the efficacy of bariatric surgery for obese patients with PCOS up to October 2018. RESULTS A total of 9 studies with 234 obese PCOS patients were included in this article. The results of meta-analysis showed that after bariatric surgery, there was a significant reduction of the incidence of abnormal menstruation (relative risk [RR] .23; 95% confidence interval [CI] .13-.43; P < .00001) and hirsutism (RR .47; 95% CI .28-.79; P = .004). Bariatric surgery can also cause a decrease in the serum total testosterone level (mean difference [MD] = -25.82; 95% CI -30.06 to -21.58; P < .00001), serum free testosterone level (MD = -4.10; 95% CI -6.97 to -1.23; P = .005), and body mass index (MD = -14.51; 95% CI -17.88 to -11.14; P < .00001). It also showed a significant effect on T2D (RR .09; 95% CI .03-.32; P = .0002) and hypertension (RR .21; 95% CI .05-.98; P = .05) in obese patients with PCOS. CONCLUSIONS Bariatric surgery can reduce the incidence of abnormal menstruation, improve hyperandrogenism and its clinical manifestations, and decrease the body mass index, prevalence of T2D, and hypertension in obese patients with PCOS.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly associated with a higher cardiometabolic risk. The relationship between steroid hormones and cardiometabolic profile in PCOS has been evaluated, but no single hormonal predictor of this association has been identified to determine. To determine the relationship between steroid hormones and cardiometabolic risk factors in PCOS women. Study included 64 women diagnosed with PCOS. Fasting blood samples were analyzed for biochemical, metabolic parameters and sex steroid hormones. PCOS women with BMI≥27 had significantly higher serum free testosterone (FT), free androgen index (FAI), estrone (E1) (p=0.014, p=0.02, p=0.01) than those with normal weight. In all subjects E1 positively correlated with BMI (p=0.0067), serum insulin (p=0.0046), HOMA-IR (p=0.0125) and negatively with HDL-cholesterol (p=0.009). FAI positively correlated with serum cholesterol (p=0.0457), triacylglycerols (TAG) (p=0.0001), HOMA-IR (p=0.037), and glycemia (p=0.0001), negatively with HDL-cholesterol (p=0.029). In multiple linear regression model E1 most significantly predicted HOMA-IR, whereas FT/FAI predicted HDL-cholesterol and BMI. We conclude that PCOS women with marked overweight or obesity have higher FT, FAI and E1 as compared with nonobese PCOS subjects. E1 and FT may predict worse cardiometabolic profile in PCOS.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the possible impact of hormonal and demographic parameters of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) on the circulating levels of myostatin. The study cohort comprised 46 patients with PCOS and 42 healthy female controls, and all subjects were of normal weight. Multiple regression analysis was applied to investigate the possible associations between serum myostatin levels and other laboratory parameters. Evaluation of the levels of myostatin revealed no significant differences between the PCOS and control groups (P>0.05). In the control group, no significant correlations were identified between the myostatin levels and any other laboratory parameters. Only low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in the PCOS group were revealed to be significantly, although negatively, associated with myostatin levels (P=0.018). In the regression model of the PCOS group, an increase in LDL-C and prolactin (PRL) were associated with a decrease in myostatin (P=0.001 and P=0.013, respectively). Furthermore, a decrease in sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and monocytes were associated with an increase in myostatin (P=0.028, P<0.001 and P=0.026, respectively). An increase in triglycerides was also associated with an increase in myostatin (P=0.001). In the regression model of the control group, a decrease in LDL-C was associated with an increase in myostatin (P=0.003) and a decrease in thyroid-stimulating hormone was associated with a decrease in myostatin (P=0.028). These results indicated that the normal range of myostatin levels in patients with PCOS is regulated by changes in the circulating levels of PRL, LDL-C, SHBG, triglycerides, monocytes and FBG.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate both independent and combined effects of insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction on cardio-metabolic abnormalities in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN A national epidemiologic survey was performed in reproductive aged females in China from October 2007 to September 2011. METHODS A total of 824 PCOS and 2715 non-PCOS were included. The Rotterdam Criteria were applied for PCOS diagnosis. We used the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and HOMA of β-cell function (HOMA-β) to evaluate insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction, respectively. RESULTS Compared with non-PCOS, PCOS showed a higher index of HOMA-IR and HOMA-β, and a higher prevalence of obesity, central obesity, and dyslipidaemia. High HOMA-IR was independently related to a high prevalence of obesity, central obesity, dyslipidaemia, and high blood glucose in PCOS. In contrast, a low index of HOMA-β index was independently correlated with a low prevalence of obesity, and central obesity, but negatively correlated with an elevated prevalence of high blood glucose in PCOS. In addition, proportion of insulin resistance was higher than that of β-cell dysfunction in PCOS with cardio-metabolic disorders. β-cell dysfunction was negatively correlated with the prevalence of central obesity and obesity. CONCLUSIONS Insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction independently affected cardio-metabolic abnormalities in PCOS, while insulin resistance was correlated with a higher prevalence of cardio-metabolic abnormalities than that of β-cell dysfunction. Moreover, β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance showed divergent correlations with obesity in PCOS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study aimed to assess the association between ovarian volume and demographic and anthropometric parameters, as well as sex hormones and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. METHODS 161 healthy postmenopausal women participated in this cross-sectional study. Fasting venous blood samples were obtained for biochemical/hormonal assessment. Anthropometric parameters included body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Ultrasonography was used to estimate the average ovarian volume for each participant. BMD was measured in the femoral neck (FN) and the lumbar spine (LS) using DXA. RESULTS Mean ovarian volume increased linearly with increasing quartiles of BMI (Q1:0.985±0.25, Q2: 1.11±0.29, Q3: 1.07±0.28, Q4: 1.19±0.38, p-value for linear trend 0.013). Ovarian volume correlated positively with BMI (r=0.128, p-value=0.038), FN BMD (r=0.233, p-value=0.003), FN T-score (r=0.223, p-value=0.004) and FN Z-score (r=0.171, p-value=0.027). Multivariate analysis showed that ovarian volume was predicted by WHR (b-coefficient=0.157, p-value=0.047) and SHBG (b-coefficient= -0.160, p-value=0.042), independently of age and BMI. Finally, FN BMD was predicted by ovarian volume, independently of age, menopausal age and BMI. CONCLUSION Ovarian volume was positively and independently associated with adiposity indexes and femoral BMD in postmenopausal women. Lower SHBG levels were associated with higher ovarian volume. Insulin resistance may mediate these results. The significance of these findings should be assessed in larger prospective studies.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to perform a review of the longitudinal studies to determine whether polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with higher prevalence of metabolic complications and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The primary outcomes included body mass index, metabolic syndrome and its components (waist circumference, lipid profile, arterial hypertension, abnormal glucose metabolism (impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, type 2 diabetes), insulin resistance, and cardiovascular diseases like stroke, angina, and coronary heart disease. Complications in pregnant women were beyond the scope of this review. PubMed database (1992-2018) was searched to identify proper publications. Finally, data from 47 articles were analysed. Studies differed in the design (prospective, retrospective, cohort, observational), research methods, polycystic ovary syndrome diagnostic criteria, studied populations, race, and ethnicity of the participants. Based on the data collected, it appears that women with polycystic ovary syndrome have higher prevalence of obesity, abdominal fat distribution, dyslipidaemia and deterioration of glucose metabolism, but increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases is not proven.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by abnormal reproductive cycles, irregular ovulation, and hyperandrogenism. This complex disorder has its origins both within and outside the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Cardio-metabolic factors, such as obesity and insulin resistance, contribute to the manifestation of the PCOS phenotype. Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common endocrine disorders among women of reproductive age. Growing evidence suggested an association between reproductive and metabolic features of PCOS and exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC), such as bisphenol A. Further, the environmental obesogen tributyltin (TBT) was shown to induce reproductive, metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities resembling those found in women and animal models of PCOS. However, the causal link between TBT exposure and PCOS development remains unclear. The objective of this review was to summarize the most recent research findings on the potential association between TBT exposure and development of PCOS-like features in animal models and humans.
