Abstract
The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the fabrication of bioceramic scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, with an emphasis on the use of three-dimensional (3D) technologies coupled with generative design principles. The field of modern medicine has witnessed remarkable advancements and continuous innovation in recent decades, driven by a relentless desire to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Central to this progress is the field of tissue engineering, which holds immense promise for regenerative medicine applications. Scaffolds are integral to tissue engineering and serve as 3D frameworks that support cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. A wide array of materials has been explored for the fabrication of scaffolds, including bioceramics (i.e., hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, bioglasses) and bioceramic-polymer composites, each offering unique properties and functionalities tailored to specific applications. Several fabrication methods, such as thermal-induced phase separation, electrospinning, freeze-drying, gas foaming, particle leaching/solvent casting, fused deposition modeling, 3D printing, stereolithography and selective laser sintering, will be introduced and thoroughly analyzed and discussed from the point of view of their unique characteristics, which have proven invaluable for obtaining bioceramic scaffolds. Moreover, by highlighting the important role of generative design in scaffold optimization, this review seeks to pave the way for the development of innovative strategies and personalized solutions to address significant gaps in the current literature, mainly related to complex bone defects in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
This study endeavors to investigate the progression, research focal points, and budding trends in the realm of skin bioprinting over the past decade from a structural and temporal dynamics standpoint. Scholarly articles on skin bioprinting were obtained from WoSCC. A series of bibliometric tools comprising R software, CiteSpace, HistCite, and an alluvial generator were employed to discern historical characteristics, evolution of active topics, and upcoming tendencies in the area of skin bioprinting. Over the past decade, there has been a consistent rise in research interest in skin bioprinting, accompanied by an extensive array of meaningful scientific collaborations. Concurrently, diverse dynamic topics have emerged during various periods, as substantiated by an aggregate of 22 disciplines, 74 keywords, and 187 references demonstrating citation bursts. Four burgeoning research subfields were discerned through keyword clustering-namely, #3 'in situbioprinting', #6 'vascular', #7 'xanthan gum', and #8 'collagen hydrogels'. The keyword alluvial map reveals that Module 1, including 'transplantation' etc, has primarily dominated the research module over the previous decade, maintaining enduring relevance despite annual shifts in keyword focus. Additionally, we mapped out the top six key modules from 2023 being 'silk fibroin nanofiber', 'system', 'ionic liquid', 'mechanism', and 'foot ulcer'. Three recent research subdivisions were identified via timeline visualization of references, particularly Clusters #0 'wound healing', #4 'situ mineralization', and #5 '3D bioprinter'. Insights derived from bibliometric analyses illustrate present conditions and trends in skin bioprinting research, potentially aiding researchers in pinpointing central themes and pioneering novel investigative approaches in this field.

Abstract
Although three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques are used to mimic macro- and micro-structures as well as multi-structural human tissues in tissue engineering, efficient target tissue regeneration requires bioactive 3D printing scaffolds. In this study, we developed a bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)-immobilized polycaprolactone (PCL) 3D printing scaffold with leaf-stacked structure (LSS) (3D-PLSS-BMP) as a bioactive patient-tailored bone graft. The unique LSS was introduced on the strand surface of the scaffold via heating/cooling in tetraglycol without significant deterioration in physical properties. The BMP-2 adsorbed on3D-PLSS-BMPwas continuously released from LSS over a period of 32 d. The LSS can be a microtopographical cue for improved focal cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation.In vitrocell culture andin vivoanimal studies demonstrated the biological (bioactive BMP-2) and physical (microrough structure) mechanisms of3D-PLSS-BMPfor accelerated bone regeneration. Thus, bioactive molecule-immobilized 3D printing scaffold with LSS represents a promising physically and biologically activated bone graft as well as an advanced tool for widespread application in clinical and research fields.

Abstract
Commercially pure titanium (CpTi), a bioinert metal, is used as an implant material at low load-bearing sites and as a porous coating on Ti6Al4V at high load-bearing sites. There is an unmet need for metallic biomaterials to improve osseointegration and inherent antimicrobial resistance. In this study, we have added 1 wt % SiO2 and 3 wt % Cu to the CpTi matrix and processed via metal additive manufacturing (AM). Si4+ ions promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis. CpTi-SiO2 composition exhibited 4.5 times higher bone formation at the bone-implant interface over CpTi in an in vivo study with a rat distal femur model. In vitro bacterial studies with Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacterium revealed 85% antibacterial efficacy by CpTi-SiO2-3Cu than CpTi. CpTi-SiO2-3Cu did not show any inflammatory markers in vivo, indicating the absence of cytotoxicity, but displayed delayed osseointegration compared to CpTi-SiO2. CpTi-SiO2-3Cu displayed 3-fold higher mineralized bone formation than CpTi. Our results emphasize the synergistic effect of SiO2 and Cu addition in CpTi, promoting enhanced early stage osseointegration and inherent antibacterial efficacy, contributing toward implant longevity and stability in vivo.

Abstract
Nanoattapulgite (nano-ATP), a magnesium-aluminum silicate clay, can absorb substances and is a suitable material for bone repair and regeneration. In this study, using three-dimensional printing technology, a nano-ATP/polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold was fabricated and modified using NaOH to form a rough surface. Biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HA) on nano-ATP/PCL scaffolds was fabricated using a biomineralized approach. The scaffold provided structural support through PCL and was modified with ATP and HA to improve hydrophilicity and promote the delivery of nutrients. The biocompatibility and osteogenic induction of scaffolds were assessed in vitro using mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. According to the in vitro study results, the nano-ATP/PCL/HA composite scaffold significantly boosted the expression levels of genes related to osteogenesis (p < 0.05), attributed to its superior alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium deposition capabilities. The outcomes of in vivo experimentation demonstrated an augmentation in bone growth at the rat cranial defect site when treated with the ATP/PCL/HA composite scaffold. It can be inferred from the results that the implementation of ATP and HA for the bone tissue engineering repair material displays encouraging prospects.

Abstract
Bone defect disease seriously endangers human health and affects beauty and function. In the past five years, the three dimension (3D) printed radially graded triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) porous scaffold has become a new solution for repairing bone defects. This review discusses 3D printing technologies and applications for TPMS scaffolds. To this end, the microstructural effects of 3D printed TPMS scaffolds on bone regeneration were reviewed and the structural characteristics of TPMS, which can promote bone regeneration, were introduced. Finally, the challenges and prospects of using TPMS scaffolds to treat bone defects were presented. This review is expected to stimulate the interest of bone tissue engineers in radially graded TPMS scaffolds and provide a reliable solution for the clinical treatment of personalised bone defects.

Abstract
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized medical care in recent years and plays a vital role in a number of areas, such as diagnostics and forecasting. In this review, we discuss the most promising areas of AI application to the field of bone tissue engineering and prosthetics, which can drastically benefit from AI-assisted optimization and patient personalization of implants and scaffolds in ways ranging from visualization and real-time monitoring to the implantation cases prediction, thereby leveraging the compromise between specific architecture decisions, material choice, and synthesis procedure. With the emphasized crucial role of accuracy and robustness of developed AI algorithms, especially in bone tissue engineering, it was shown that rigorous validation and testing, demanding large datasets and extensive clinical trials, are essential, and we discuss how through developing multidisciplinary cooperation among biology, chemistry with materials science, and AI, these challenges can be addressed.

Abstract
The synthesis of biocompatible and bioresorbable composite materials, such as a "polymer matrix-mineral constituent," stimulating the natural growth of living tissues and the restoration of damaged parts of the body, is one of the challenging problems in regenerative medicine and materials science. Composite films of bioresorbable polymer of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and hydroxyapatite (HA) were obtained. HA was synthesized in situ in the polymer solution. We applied electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) approaches to study the composite films' properties. The application of EPR in two frequency ranges allowed us to derive spectroscopic parameters of the nitrogen-based light and radiation-induced paramagnetic centers in HA, PVP and PVP-HA with high accuracy. It was shown that PVP did not significantly affect the EPR spectral and relaxation parameters of the radiation-induced paramagnetic centers in HA, while light-induced centers were detected only in PVP. Magic angle spinning (MAS) 1H NMR showed the presence of two signals at 4.7 ppm and -2.15 ppm, attributed to "free" water and hydroxyl groups, while the single line was attributed to 31P. NMR relaxation measurements for 1H and 31P showed that the relaxation decays were multicomponent processes that can be described by three components of the transverse relaxation times. The obtained results demonstrated that the applied magnetic resonance methods can be used for the quality control of PVP-HA composites and, potentially, for the development of analytical tools to follow the processes of sample treatment, resorption, and degradation.

Abstract
Treating critical-size bone defects with autografts, allografts, or standardized implants is challenging since the healing of the defect area necessitates patient-specific grafts with mechanically and physiologically relevant structures. Three-dimensional (3D) printing using computer-aided design (CAD) is a promising approach for bone tissue engineering applications by producing constructs with customized designs and biomechanical compositions. In this study, we propose 3D printing of personalized and implantable hybrid active scaffolds with a unique architecture and biomaterial composition for critical-size bone defects. The proposed 3D hybrid construct was designed to have a gradient cell-laden poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel, which was surrounded by a porous polycaprolactone (PCL) cage structure to recapitulate the anatomical structure of the defective area. The optimized PCL cage design not only provides improved mechanical properties but also allows the diffusion of nutrients and medium through the scaffold. Three different designs including zigzag, zigzag/spiral, and zigzag/spiral with shifting the zigzag layers were evaluated to find an optimal architecture from a mechanical point of view and permeability that can provide the necessary mechanical strength and oxygen/nutrient diffusion, respectively. Mechanical properties were investigated experimentally and analytically using finite element analysis (FEA), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was used to determine the permeability of the structures. A hybrid scaffold was fabricated via 3D printing of the PCL cage structure and a PEG-based bioink comprising a varying number of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs). The gradient bioink was deposited inside the PCL cage through a microcapillary extrusion to generate a mineralized gradient structure. The zigzag/spiral design for the PCL cage was found to be mechanically strong with sufficient and optimum nutrient/gas axial and radial diffusion while the PEG-based hydrogel provided a biocompatible environment for hBMSC viability, differentiation, and mineralization. This study promises the production of personalized constructs for critical-size bone defects by printing different biomaterials and gradient cells with a hybrid design depending on the need for a donor site for implantation.

Abstract
The increasing need for joint replacement surgeries, musculoskeletal repairs, and orthodontics worldwide prompts emerging technologies to evolve with healthcare's changing landscape. Metallic orthopaedic materials have a shared application history with the aerospace industry, making them only partly efficient in the biomedical domain. However, suitability of metallic materials in bone tissue replacements and regenerative therapies remains unchallenged due to their superior mechanical properties, eventhough they are not perfectly biocompatible. Therefore, exploring ways to improve biocompatibility is the most critical step toward designing the next generation of metallic biomaterials. This review discusses methods of improving biocompatibility of metals used in biomedical devices using surface modification, bulk modification, and incorporation of biologics. Our investigation spans multiple length scales, from bulk metals to the effect of microporosities, surface nanoarchitecture, and biomolecules such as DNA incorporation for enhanced biological response in metallic materials. We examine recent technologies such as 3D printing in alloy design and storing surface charge on nanoarchitecture surfaces, metal-on-metal, and ceramic-on-metal coatings to present a coherent and comprehensive understanding of the subject. Finally, we consider the advantages and challenges of metallic biomaterials and identify future directions.

Abstract
Osteochondral defect caused by trauma or osteoarthritis exhibits a major challenge in clinical treatment with limited symptomatic effects at present. The regeneration and remodeling of subchondral bone play a positive effect on cartilage regeneration and further promotes the repair of osteochondral defects. Making use of the strengths of each preparation method, the combination of 3D printing and electrospinning is a promising method for designing and constructing multi-scale scaffolds that mimic the complexity and hierarchical structure of subchondral bone at the microscale and nanoscale, respectively. In this study, the 3D printed-electrospun poly(ɛ-caprolactone)/nano-hydroxyapatites/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PCL/nHA/MWCNTs) scaffolds were successfully constructed by the combination of electrospinning and layer-by-layer 3D printing. The resulting dual-scale scaffold consisted of a dense layer of disordered nanospun fibers and a porous microscale 3D scaffold layer to support and promote the ingrowth of subchondral bone. Herein, the biomimetic PCL/nHA/MWCNTs scaffolds enhanced cell seeding efficiency and allowed for higher cell-cell interactions that supported the adhesion, proliferation, activity, morphology and subsequently improved the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. Together, this study elucidates that the construction of 3D printed-electrospun PCL/nHA/MWCNTs scaffolds provides an alternative strategy for the regeneration of subchondral bone and lays a foundation for subsequent in vivo studies.

Abstract
Damage and degeneration to bone and articular cartilage are the leading causes of musculoskeletal disability. Commonly used clinical and surgical methods include autologous/allogeneic bone and cartilage transplantation, vascularized bone transplantation, autologous chondrocyte implantation, mosaicplasty, and joint replacement. 3D bio printing technology to construct implants by layer-by-layer printing of biological materials, living cells, and other biologically active substances in vitro, which is expected to replace the repair mentioned above methods. Researchers use cells and biomedical materials as discrete materials. 3D bio printing has largely solved the problem of insufficient organ donors with the ability to prepare different organs and tissue structures. This paper mainly discusses the application of polymer materials, bio printing cell selection, and its application in bone and cartilage repair.

Abstract
The repair of critical diaphyseal defects of lower weight-bearing limbs is an intractable problem in clinical practice. From December 2017, we prospectively applied 3D printed porous Ti6Al4V scaffolds to reconstruct this kind of bone defect. All patients experienced a two-stage surgical process, including thorough debridement and scaffold implantation. With an average follow-up of 23.0 months, ten patients with 11 parts of bone defects were enrolled in this study. The case series included three females and seven males, their defect reasons included seven parts of osteomyelitis and four parts of aseptic nonunion. The bone defects located at femur (five parts) and tibia (six parts), with an average defect distance of 12.2 cm. Serial postoperative radiologic follow-ups displayed a continuous process of new bone growing and remodeling around the scaffold. One patient suffered tibial varus deformity, and he underwent a revision surgery. The other nine patients achieved scaffold stability. No scaffold breakage occurred. In conclusion, the implantation of 3D printed Ti6Al4V scaffold was feasible and effective to reconstruct critical bone defects of lower limbs without additional bone grafting. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
In most cases, bone injuries heal without complications, however, there is an increasing number of instances where bone healing needs major clinical intervention. Available treatment options have severe drawbacks, such as donor site morbidity and limited availability for autografting. Bone graft substitutes containing growth factors would be a viable alternative, however they have been associated with dose-related safety concerns and lack control over spatial architecture to anatomically match bone defect sites. 3D printing offers a solution to produce patient specific bone graft substitutes that are customized to the patient bone defect with temporal control over the incorporated therapeutics to maximize their efficacy. Inspired by the natural constitution of bone tissue, composites made of inorganic phases, such as nanosilicate particles, calcium phosphate, and bioactive glasses, combined with biopolymer matrices have been investigated as building blocks for the biofabrication of bone constructs. Besides capturing elements of the bone physiological structure, these inorganic/organic composites can be designed for specific cohesivity, rheological and mechanical properties, while both inorganic and organic constituents contribute to the composite bioactivity. This review provides an overview of 3D printed composite biomaterial-inks for bone tissue engineering. Furthermore, key aspects in biomaterial-ink design, 3D printing techniques, and the building blocks for composite biomaterial-inks are summarized.

Abstract
Several techniques, such as additive manufacturing, have been used for the manufacture of polymer-ceramic composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. A new extruder head recently developed for improving the manufacturing process is an experimental 3D printer Fab@CTI that enables the use of ceramic powders in the processing of composite materials or polymer blends. Still, the manufacturing process needs improvement to promotes the dispersion of ceramic particles in the polymer matrix. This article addresses the manufacture of scaffolds by 3D printing from mixtures of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and a glass powder of same composition of 45S5Bioglass®, labeled as synthesized bioglass (SBG), according to two different methods that investigated the efficiency of the new extruder head. The first one is a single extrusion process in a Fab@CTI 3D printer, and the other consists in the pre-processing of the PCL-SBG mixture in a mono-screw extruder with a Maddock®element, followed by direct extrusion in the experimental Fab@CTI 3D printer. The morphological characterization of the extruded samples by SEM showed an architecture of 0o/90o interconnected struts and suitable porosity for bone tissue engineering applications. Scaffolds fabricated by two methods shows compressive modulus ranging from 54.4 ± 14.2 MPa to 155.9 ± 20.4 MPa, results that are compatible to use in bone tissue engineering. Cytotoxicity assays showed non-toxic effects and viability for in vitro MG-63 cell proliferation. Alizarin Red staining test showed calcium deposition in all scaffolds, which suggests PCL/SBG composites promising candidates for use in bone tissue engineering. Results of cell morphology suggest more cell growth and adhesion for scaffolds fabricated using the pre-processing in a mono-screw extruder.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is one of the most promising additive manufacturing technologies for fabricating various biomimetic architectures of tissues and organs. In this context, the bioink, a critical element for biofabrication, is a mixture of biomaterials and living cells used in 3D printing to create cell-laden structures. Recently, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM)-based bioinks derived from natural tissues have garnered enormous attention from researchers due to their unique and complex biochemical properties. This review initially presents the details of the natural ECM and its role in cell growth and metabolism. Further, we briefly emphasize the commonly used decellularization treatment procedures and subsequent evaluations for the quality control of the dECM. In addition, we summarize some of the common bioink preparation strategies, the 3D bioprinting approaches, and the applicability of 3D-printed dECM bioinks to tissue engineering. Finally, we present some of the challenges in this field and the prospects for future development.

Improved 3D Printing and Cell Biology Characterization of Inorganic-Filler Containing Alginate-Based Composites for Bone Regeneration: Particle Shape and Effective Surface Area Are the Dominant Factors for Printing Performance. Abstract
The use of organic-inorganic 3D printed composites with enhanced properties in biomedical applications continues to increase. The present study focuses on the development of 3D printed alginate-based composites incorporating inorganic fillers with different shapes (angular and round), for bone regeneration. Reactive fillers (bioactive glass 13-93 and hydroxyapatite) and non-reactive fillers (inert soda-lime glass) were investigated. Rheological studies and the characterization of various extrusion-based parameters, including material throughput, printability, shape fidelity and filament fusion, were carried out to identify the parameters dominating the printing process. It was shown that the effective surface area of the filler particle has the highest impact on the printing behavior, while the filler reactivity presents a side aspect. Composites with angular particle morphologies showed the same high resolution during the printing process, almost independent from their reactivity, while composites with comparable amounts of round filler particles lacked stackability after printing. Further, it could be shown that a higher effective surface area of the particles can circumvent the need for a higher filler content for obtaining convincing printing results. In addition, it was proven that, by changing the particle shape, the critical filler content for the obtained adequate printability can be altered. Preliminary in vitro biocompatibility investigations were carried out with the bioactive glass containing ink. The 3D printed ink, forming an interconnected porous scaffold, was analyzed regarding its biocompatibility in direct or indirect contact with the pre-osteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1. Both kinds of cell tests showed increased viability and a high rate of proliferation, with complete coverage of the 3D scaffolds' surface already after 7 d post cell-seeding.

Abstract
Three-dimensional-printed scaffolds have received greater attention as an attractive option compared to the conventional bone grafts for regeneration of alveolar bone defects. Hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphates have been used as biomaterials in the fabrication of 3D-printed scaffolds. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the potential of 3D-printed HA and calcium phosphates-based scaffolds on alveolar bone regeneration in animal models. The systematic search was conducted across four electronic databases: Ovid, Web of Science, PubMed and EBSCOHOST, based on PRISMA-ScR guidelines until November 2021. The inclusion criteria were: (i) animal models undergoing alveolar bone regenerative surgery, (ii) the intervention to regenerate or augment bone using 3D-printed hydroxyapatite or other calcium phosphate scaffolds and (iii) histological and microcomputed tomographic analyses of new bone formation and biological properties of 3D-printed hydroxyapatite or calcium phosphates. A total of ten studies were included in the review. All the studies showed promising results on new bone formation without any inflammatory reactions, regardless of the animal species. In conclusion, hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphates are feasible materials for 3D-printed scaffolds for alveolar bone regeneration and demonstrated bone regenerative potential in the oral cavity. However, further research is warranted to determine the scaffold material which mimics the gold standard of care for bone regeneration in the load-bearing areas, including the masticatory load of the oral cavity.

Abstract
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a technology that uses a variety of adhesive materials such as powdered metal or plastic to construct objects based on digital models. Recently, 3D printing technology has been combined with digital medicine, materials science, cytology, and other multidisciplinary fields, especially in the field of orthopedic built-in objects. The development of advanced 3D printing materials continues to meet the needs of clinical precision medicine and customize the most suitable prosthesis for everyone to improve service life and satisfaction. This article introduces the development of 3D printing technology and different types of materials. We also discuss the shortcomings of 3D printing technology and the current challenges, including the poor bionics of 3D printing products, lack of ideal bioinks, product safety, and lack of market supervision. We also prospect the future development trends of 3D printing.

Abstract
Graphene is a novel material which has recently been gaining great interest in the biomedical fields. Our previous study observed that graphene-derived particles help induce bone formation in a murine calvarial model. Here, we further developed a blended graphene-contained polycaprolactone (PCL/G) filament for application in a 3D-printed bone scaffold. Since implants are expected to be for long-term usage, in vitro cell culture and in vivo scaffold implants were evaluated in a critical-size bone defect calvarial model for over 60 weeks. Graphene greatly improved the mechanical strength by 30.2% compared to pure PCL. The fabricated PCL/G scaffolds also showed fine cell viability. In animal model, an abnormal electroencephalogram power spectrum and early signs of aging, such as hair graying and hair loss, were found in the group with a PCL/G scaffold compared to pure PCL scaffold. Neither of the abnormal symptoms caused death of all animals in both groups. The long-term use of graphene-derived biomaterials for in-vivo implants seems to be safe. But the comprehensive biosafety still needs further evaluation.

Abstract
Potential roles for anthocyanins in preventing various chronic diseases have been reported. These compounds are highly sensitive to external conditions and are susceptible to degradation, which increases the complexity of their metabolism in vivo. This review discusses anthocyanin metabolism in the digestive tract, phase I and II metabolism, and enterohepatic circulation (EHC), as well as their distribution of anthocyanins in blood, urine, and several organs. In the oral cavity, anthocyanins are partly hydrolyzed by microbiota into aglycones which are then conjugated by glucuronidase. In stomach, anthocyanins are absorbed without deglycosylation via specific transporters, such as sodium-dependent glucose co-transporter 1 and facilitative glucose transporters 1, while in small intestine, they are mainly absorbed as aglycones. High polymeric anthocyanins are easily degraded into low-polymeric forms or smaller phenolic acids by colonic microbiota, which improves their absorption. Anthocyanins and their derivatives are modified by phase I and II metabolic enzymes in cells and are released into the blood via the gastrovascular cavity into EHC. Notably, interconversion can be occurred under the action of enzymes such as catechol-O-methyltransferase. Taking together, differences in anthocyanin absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion largely depend on their glycoside and aglycone structures.

Abstract
During the past 30 years, 3D printing (3DP) technologies significantly influenced the manufacturing world, including innovation in biomedical devices. This special issue reviews recent advances in translating 3DP biomaterials and medical devices for metallic, ceramic, and polymeric devices, as well as bioprinting for organ and tissue engineering, along with regulatory issues in 3DP biomaterials. In our introductory article, besides introducing selected 3DP processes for biomaterials, current challenges and growth opportunities are also discussed. Finally, it highlights a few success stories for the 3D printed biomaterials for medical devices. We hope these articles will educate engineers, scientists, and clinicians about recent developments in translational 3DP technologies.

Abstract
Tissue engineering (TE) is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field, which aims to restore or improve lost tissue function. Despite that TE was introduced more than 20 years ago, innovative and more sophisticated trends and technologies point to new challenges and development. Current challenges involve the demand for multifunctional bioscaffolds which can stimulate tissue regrowth by biochemical curves, biomimetic patterns, active agents and proper cell types. For those purposes especially promising are carefully chosen primary cells or stem cells due to its high proliferative and differentiation potential. This review summarized a variety of recently reported advanced bioscaffolds which present new functions by combining polymers, nanomaterials, bioactive agents and cells depending on its desired application. In particular necessity of study biomaterial-cell interactions with in vitro cell culture models, and studies using animals with in vivo systems were discuss to permit the analysis of full material biocompatibility. Although these bioscaffolds have shown a significant therapeutic effect in nervous, cardiovascular and muscle, tissue engineering, there are still many remaining unsolved challenges for scaffolds improvement.

Abstract
Regenerating large bone defects remains a significant clinical challenge, motivating increased interest in additive manufacturing and 3D bioprinting to engineer superior bone graft substitutes. 3D bioprinting enables different biomaterials, cell types, and growth factors to be combined to develop patient-specific implants capable of directing functional bone regeneration. Current approaches to bioprinting such implants fall into one of two categories, each with their own advantages and limitations. First are those that can be 3D bioprinted and then directly implanted into the body and second those that require further in vitro culture after bioprinting to engineer more mature tissues prior to implantation. This review covers the key concepts, challenges, and applications of both strategies to regenerate damaged and diseased bone.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) is among the most attractive methods to produce implants, the processes are very swift and it can be precisely controlled to meet patient's requirement since they can be produced in exact shape, dimension, and even texture of different living tissues. Until now, lots of methods have emerged and used in this field with diverse characteristics. This review aims to comprehensively discuss 3D printing (3DP) technologies to manufacture metallic implants, especially on techniques and procedures. Various technologies based on their main properties are categorized, the effecting parameters are introduced, and the history of AM technology is briefly analyzed. Subsequently, the utilization of these AM-manufactured components in medicine along with their effectual variables is discussed, and special attention is paid on to the production of porous scaffolds, taking pore size, density, etc., into consideration. Finally, 3DP of the popular metallic systems in medical applications such as titanium, Ti6Al4V, cobalt-chromium alloys, and shape memory alloys are studied. In general, AM manufactured implants need to comply with important requirements such as biocompatibility, suitable mechanical properties (strength and elastic modulus), surface conditions, custom-built designs, fast production, etc. This review aims to introduce the AM technologies in implant applications and find new ways to design more sophisticated methods and compatible implants that mimic the desired tissue functions.
