Abstract
Fibromyalgia (FM) patients are highly susceptible to depression. Wnt/β-catenin signaling has shown a crucial role against depression in several studies. The FDA-approved FM drug, milnacipran (Miln), has shown antinociceptive potential against FM. Yet, no study has investigated its antidepressant potential in FM. Vanillin (Van), a well-known phytochemical often employed as flavoring agent, has been previously reported for its antidepressant and antinociceptive effects in several animal models, but has not been tested so far in FM. This study explored the antidepressant effect of Van and Miln in FM through investigating Wnt/β-catenin signaling. FM was induced in female Wistar rats by injecting reserpine (1 mg/kg/day s.c) for 3 days. Thereafter, animals received either Miln (30 mg/kg/day p.o) or Van (100 mg/kg/day p.o) for the subsequent 14 days. Results showed that both drugs demonstrated antidepressant effect in forced swimming test besides analgesic, and antiallodynic influences observed in Randall-Selitto, hot plate, cold allodynia, Von-Frey, and tail immersion tests. Biochemically, Miln and Van significantly enhanced serotonergic transmission in the hippocampus and upregulated the protein expression of the Wnt/GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling axis, including the downstream proteins, T cell factor, and dicer. This is followed by subsequent upregulation of the resilience micro ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) 124 and 135. Histopathological examinations corroborated the biochemical and molecular findings. Interestingly, these effects of Miln and Van were overturned via administration of the β-catenin inhibitor, XAV939 (0.1 mg/kg, i.p., daily). In conclusion, this study outlined the antidepressant aptitude of Miln and Van through activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the hippocampus in reserpine-induced FM.

Abstract
Panicum antidotale has traditionally been used as a poultice to alleviate local inflammation and painful diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, analgesic, and antipyretic potential of its ethanol extract (PAAPEE) in vivo for the first time. In vitro antioxidant assays of Panicum antidotale using a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay revealed that it showed IC50 of 62.50 ± 6.85 μg/mL in contrast to standard, ascorbic acid, that showed IC50 of 85.51 ± 0.38 μg/mL. Administration of PAAPEE at a dose of 500 mg/kg (PAAPEE-500) displayed 78.44% and 75.13% inhibition of paw edema in carrageenen and histamine-induced edema models. respectively, 6 h post-treatment compared to that of the untreated group. Furthermore, it showed 68.78% inhibition of Freund's complete adjuvant-induced edema 21 days after treatment. It reduced the animal's rectal temperature in the yeast-induced fever model to 99.45 during the fourth h post-treatment. It significantly inhibited abnormal writhing by 44% in the acetic acid-induced pain model. PAE-500 also showed enhancement in wound closure by 72.52% with respect to that of the untreated group on the 10th day post-treatment using the excision healing of wound model. Histopathological examination of skin samples confirmed this improvement, showing enhanced tissue architecture with minimal infiltration of inflammatory cells. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of PAAPEE revealed the presence of quercetin, gallic, p-coumaric, benzoic, chlorogenic, syringic, ferulic, cinnamic, and sinapic acids. Molecular docking of 5-lipoxygenase and glycogen synthase kinase-3 β protein indicated their potential interaction within the active sites of both enzymes. Thus, P. antidotale serves as an effective natural wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic agent.

Abstract
Adenosine receptors (ARs) are being explored to generate non-opioid pain therapeutics. Vanilloid compounds, curcumin, capsaicin, and vanillin possess antinociceptive properties through their interactions with the transient receptor potential channel family. However, their binding with adenosine receptors has not been well studied. The hypothesis in this study was that a vanilloid compound, cis-trans curcumin (CTCUR), binds to each of the two Gi-linked AR subtypes (A1AR and A3AR). CTCUR was synthesized from curcumin (CUR) using the cavitand-mediated photoisomerization technique. The cell lines transfected with the specific receptor (A1AR or A3AR) were treated with CTCUR or CUR and the binding was analyzed using competitive assays, confocal microscopy, and docking. The binding assays and molecular docking indicated that CTCUR had Ki values of 306 nM (A1AR) and 400 nM (A3AR). These values suggest that CTCUR is selective for Gi-linked ARs (A1AR or A3AR) over Gs-linked ARs (A2AAR or A2BAR), based on our previous published research. In addition, the docking showed that CTCUR binds to the toggle switch domain of ARs. Curcumin (CUR) did not exhibit binding at any of these receptors. In summary, CTCUR and other modifications of CUR can be developed as novel therapeutic ligands for the Gi-linked ARs (A1AR and A3AR) involved with pain and cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Medicated oil has been traditionally used as an analgesic medicine to relieve pain by applying to the skin over painful muscles, and has been established in The National List of Essential Medicines (2556 B.E.). Traditional Medicated oil (TMO) consists of cassumunar ginger, Wan En Lueang, and Wan Ron Thong. It is prepared by frying herbs in coconut oil which is a traditional method. Thai Herbal Medicated oil formula (MOF) comprises cassumunar ginger, sweet flag, lesser galangal, wild turmeric, Wan En Lueang, and Wan Ron Thong. Its preparation by maceration with methyl salicylate is modified method to avoid the heat in the traditional preparation. Since both recipes have different methods of extraction and compositions, it is necessary to determine the chemical constituents and acute skin irritation potential of MOF and TMO. METHODS This study applied Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for quality assessment of MOF extract and TMO extract. The mass spectra of the compounds matched with authentic standards from the NIST library. The compounds were identified by comparing their retention time and peak area, and the percentage of matched factor was more than 80%. The safety assessment on acute skin irritation used the 4 h human patch test (4 h HPT) in 36 healthy subjects. RESULTS The 37 compounds were found in MOF extract. The most common chemical constituents were terpene derivatives; monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, and others, namely benzene derivatives, ester, phenylpropanoid, and other compounds. The 33 compounds were found in TMO extract and the chemical groups were similar to MOF extract. The 4 h HPT demonstrated that the MOF extract, TMO extract, methyl salicylate solvent, and coconut oil solvent, did not induce skin irritation. However, the vehicle of the formulae and the whole formulae as MOF and TMO clinically induced skin irritation and accorded with rubefacient. The characteristic as mild erythema or dryness, but not erythema with edema, could appear after the use of rubbing skin products. CONCLUSIONS The chemical constituents found in MOF and TMO extracts were partially different and their acute skin irritation reactions were not significantly different. A study on the efficacy of both remedies should be performed in the future, as well as a study on active chemical constituents. This study provides scientific evidences of quality and safety, including GC-MS condition for poly-herbal medicated oil standardization.

Abstract
The search for molecules that contribute to the relief of pain is a field of research in constant development. Lamiaceae is one of the most recognized families world-wide for its use in traditional medicine to treat diseases that include pain and inflammation. Mexico can be considered one of the most important centers of diversification, and due to the high endemism of this family, it is crucial for the in situ conservation of this family. Information about the most common genera and species found in this country and their uses in folk medicine are scarcely reported in the literature. After an extensive inspection in bibliographic databases, mainly Sciencedirect, Pubmed and Springer, almost 1200 articles describing aspects of Lamiaceae were found; however, 217 articles were selected because they recognize the Mexican genera and species with antinociceptive and/or anti-inflammatory potential to relieve pain, such as Salvia and Agastache. The bioactive constituents of these genera were mainly terpenes (volatile and non-volatile) and phenolic compounds such as flavonoids (glycosides and aglycone). The aim of this review is to analyze important aspects of Mexican genera of Lamiaceae, scarcely explored as a potential source of secondary metabolites responsible for the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of these species. In addition, we point out the possible mechanisms of action involved and the modulatory pathways investigated in different experimental models. As a result of this review, it is important to mention that scarce information has been reported regarding species of this family from Mexican genera. In fact, despite Calosphace being one of the largest subgenera of Salvia in the world, found mainly in Mexico, it has been barely investigated regarding its potential biological activities and recognized bioactive constituents. The scientific evidence regarding the different bioactive constituents found in species of Lamiaceae demonstrates that several species require further investigation in preclinical studies, and of course also in controlled clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of these natural products to support their therapeutic potential in pain relief and/or inflammation, among other health conditions. Since Mexico is one of the most important centers of diversification, and due to the high endemism of species of this family, it is crucial their rescue, in situ conservation, and investigation of their health benefits.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Consumable herbs play a basic part in sustenance and human health. Traditionally, Colocasia gigantea Hook (Araceae) is used to treat fever, infection, wounds healing, drowsiness, tuberculosis, stomach problems etc. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aspired to identify bioactive compounds, to evaluate anti-inflammatory and analgesic potentials of edible herb C. gigantea, and to molecular docking study against anti-inflammatory enzyme Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). MATERIALS AND METHODS Chemical components of C. gigantea were discerned by HPLC and GCMS assays. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity was appraised by heat-induced, hypotonicity, and hydrogen peroxide-induced hemolysis assays and in vivo by formalin-induced paw edema assay. In vivo analgesic activity was evaluated by acetic acid-induced pain modulation assay. Also, molecular docking of the identified compounds was explored against the anti-inflammatory enzyme cyclooxygenase-2. RESULTS HPLC-DAD analysis divulged the presence of trans-cinnamic acid along with (-)-epicatechin as a prime component. Also, 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (37.86%) and n-Hexadecanoic acid (25.89%) as the major as well as 24 other compounds were confirmed through GCMS in the extract. In in vitro anti-inflammatory study, C. gigantea extract indicated prominent erythrocyte membrane stabilization activity with good percentage aegis in all experimental assays. In addition to, formalin-induced in vivo anti-inflammatory assay revealed the maximum (42.37% and 48.72%) suppression of edema at the fourth hour at 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Moreover, an in-vivo pain modulation assay exposed significant (p < 0.05) activity at experimental doses. Furthermore, in the docking study, (-)-epicatechin was more active rather than other identified compounds with strong binding affinity to COX-2 protein. CONCLUSIONS The extract evinced remarkable anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Identified bioactive components along with other components of the extract might play a pivotal role in the observed bioactivity and the results vindicate the use of edible herb C. gigantea in ancestral medicine.

Abstract
The treatment of tissue damage produced by physical, chemical, or mechanical agents involves considerable direct and indirect costs to health care systems. Wound healing involves a series of molecular and cellular events aimed at repairing the defect in tissue integrity. These events can be favored by various natural agents, including the polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The objective of this study was to review data on the potential effects of different phenolic compounds that can also be found in EVOO on wound healing and closure. Results of in vitro and animal studies demonstrate that polyphenols from different plant species, also present in EVOO, participate in different aspects of wound healing, accelerating this process through their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties and their stimulation of angiogenic activities required for granulation tissue formation and wound re-epithelialization. These results indicate the potential usefulness of EVOO phenolic compounds for wound treatment, either alone or in combination with other therapies. Human studies are warranted to verify this proposition.

Abstract
Vanillin may modulate perception of noxious oral stimuli via TRP receptor interactions; separately, vanillin has also been shown to have top-down influences on flavor perception. Here, we ask whether added vanillin decreases the perceived burn of ethanol either via peripheral or cognitive mechanisms. Participants rated the burn of ethanol with 0, 16, and 160 ppm vanillin. In studies 1 (n = 102) and 2 (n = 82), participants wore nose clips and rated the burn of 8% and 16% ethanol (study 1) or 32% and 48% ethanol (study 2). In study 3 (n = 65), participants were able to breathe freely and rated liking and perceptual qualities of 8% and 32% ethanol at each vanillin level. Vanillin showed no significant effect on ratings of burn or smoothness, but did increase perceived sweetness (p < .001) and liking (p = .004) in study 3. These data suggest vanillin does not modulate ethanol burn via TRP receptor mediated interactions, but may shift hedonic responses to ethanol via top-down processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the search for treating neurological dysfunctions after spinal cord injury (SCI), methods of neuroprotection are of interest to intervene with the caspase pathway. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the neuroprotective effects of vanillin in a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS Rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a sham-operated group, and two groups where SCI was produced by ischemia/reperfusion which received either saline or vanillin (286 mg/kg, intraperitoneal [i.p.] 30 min prior to surgery). Neurological function was estimated by the Tarlov scale at 1, 12, and 24 h after surgery. Additionally, we estimated the levels of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and mitochondrial proteins in the homogenates of spinal tissues and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) and immunohistochemical assays of spinal tissues. RESULTS Motor dysfunction was found to be significantly improved in the vanillin treated group compared to SCI rats. This was accompanied by altered levels of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and expressions of mitochondrial proteins in the SCI rats which were ameliorated by the vanillin treatment. Vanillin also significantly reduced the number of TUNEL-positive cells in spinal cord tissues compared to the sham group (p < 0.01) and decreased the number of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α-positive cells. CONCLUSIONS In the SCI rat model vanillin exerted neuroprotective effects of reducing apoptosis and attenuating the expression of HIF-1α in spinal tissues.

Abstract
Vanillin is widely used in food and cosmetics, among other substances, for its sweet smell. However, the neuropsychological effects of vanillin inhalation have not been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of vanillin inhalation on mouse behavior. First, we investigated whether the aroma of vanillin was attractive or repulsive for mice. Thereafter, the mice inhaled vanillin for 20 min before each test in a series of behavioral tests (elevated plus maze, open field, Y-maze, tail suspension, cotton bud biting, and Porsolt forced swim tests). In these tests, the mice showed a neutral response to vanillin. Mice that inhaled vanillin had a suppressed pain response in the hot plate test. In addition, the grip strength of the forelimbs of mice that inhaled vanillin was decreased. No significant differences were found between the mice inhaling vanillin and control mice in the open field, Y-maze, tail suspension, forced swimming, and aggression tests. These results show that vanillin inhalation has anti-nociceptive effects, similar to other routes of administration. The results also show that vanillin inhalation does not cause significant behavioral effects.

Abstract
The constituents of essential oils are widely found in foods and aromatic plants giving characteristic odor and flavor. However, pharmacological studies evidence its therapeutic potential for the treatment of several diseases and promising use as compounds with analgesic-like action. Considering that pain affects a significant part of the world population and the need for the development of new analgesics, this review reports on the current studies of essential oils’ chemical constituents with analgesic-like activity, including a description of their mechanisms of action and chemical aspects.

Abstract
Vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde), a pleasant smelling organic aromatic compound, is widely used as a flavoring additive in food, beverage, cosmetic and drug industries. It is reported to cross the blood brain barrier and also displayed antioxidant and neuroprotective activities. We previously reported the neuroprotective effect of vanillin against rotenone induced in in vitro model of PD. The present experiment was aimed to analyze the neuroprotective effect of vanillin on the motor and non-motor deficits, neurochemical variables, oxidative, anti-oxidative indices and the expression of apoptotic markers against rotenone induced rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). Rotenone treatment exhibited motor and non-motor impairments, neurochemical deficits, oxidative stress and apoptosis, whereas oral administration of vanillin attenuated the above-said indices. However further studies are needed to explore the mitochondrial protective and anti-inflammatory properties of vanillin, as these processes play a vital role in the cause and progression of PD.

Abstract
Objective
Investigate the involvement of monoaminergic and glutamatergic systems on the antinociceptive and ataxic effects of uliginosin B, which we have already demonstrated to be a promising molecular scaffold to develop new analgesic drugs.
Methods
Uliginosin B was obtained from hexane extract of aerial parts of Hypericum polyanthemum by chromatographic methods. Uliginosin B antinociceptive and motor coordination effects were evaluated in mice by using hot-plate (15 and 90 mg/kg, i.p.) and rotarod (90 mg/kg, i.p.) tests, respectively. The mechanism of action was investigated through pretreatments with prazosin 1 mg/kg intraperitoneal (α1 receptor antagonist), yohimbine 5 mg/kg intraperitoneal (α2 receptor antagonist), pCPA 300 mg/kg intraperitoneal (serotonin synthesis inhibitor) and MK-801 0.25 mg/kg intraperitoneal (N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor antagonist).
Key findings
The antinociceptive effect of uliginosin B (15 and 90 mg/kg, i.p.) was reduced significantly by pCPA and MK-801. Prazosin and yohimbine improved the antinociceptive effect of the highest dose (90 mg/kg, i.p.) of uliginosin B only. The ataxic effect of uliginosin B (90 mg/kg, i.p.) was completely prevented by pretreatment with pCPA or MK-801, but it was unaffected by pretreatment with prazosin or yohimbine.
Conclusion
These data confirm the contribution of monoaminergic neurotransmission as well as provide the first evidence of glutamatergic neurotransmission contribution to the uliginosin B effects.

Abstract
The blood glucose profiles were characterized after mice were forced into immobilization stress with various exposure durations. The blood glucose level was significantly enhanced by immobilization stress for 30 min or 1 h, respectively. On the other hand, the blood glucose level was not affected in the groups which were forced into immobilization stress for 2 or 4 h. We further examined the effect of yohimbine (an α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist) administered systemically or centrally in the immobilization stress model. Mice were pretreated intraperitoneally (i.p.; from 0.5 to 5 mg/kg), intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.; from 1 to 10 µg/5 µl), or intrathecally (i.t.; from 1 to 10 µg/5 µl) with yohimbine for 10 min and then, forced into immobilization stress for 30 min. The blood glucose level was measured right after immobilization stress. We found that up-regulation of the blood glucose level induced by immobilization stress was abolished by i.p. pretreatment with yohimbine. And the immobilization stress-induced blood glucose level was not inhibited by i.c.v. or i.t. pretreatment with yohimbine at a lower dose (1 µg/5 µl). However, immobilization stress-induced blood glucose level was significantly inhibited by i.c.v. or i.t. pretreatment with yohimbine at higher doses (5 and 10 µg/5 µl). In addition, the i.p. (5 mg/kg), i.c.v. (10 µg/5 µl), or i.t. (10 µg/5 µl) pretreatment with yohimbine reduced hypothalamic glucose transporter 4 expression. The involvement of α2-adrenergic receptor in regulation of immobilization stress- induced blood glucose level was further confirmed by the i.p, i.c.v, or i.t pretreatment with idazoxan, another specific α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist. Finally, i.p., i.c.v., or i.t. pretreatment with yohimbine attenuated the blood glucose level in D-glucose-fed model. We suggest that α2-adrenergic receptors located at the peripheral, the brain and the spinal cord play important roles in the up-regulation of the blood glucose level in immobilization stress.

Abstract
Objective: The main objective of this study was to evaluate antidepressant activity of vanillin in mice models of depression. Materials and Methods: Animals were divided into five groups, consisting six mice in each group. Out of these, three groups served as control (distilled water, imipramine,and fluoxetine) and the remaining two groups received test drug in two different doses (10mg/kg and 100mg/kg). All the drugs were administered orally one hour before the test procedure for acute study and daily for ten days for chronic study. Mice were subjected to forced swim (FST) and tail suspension tests (TST). Results: Both the doses of vanillin reduced the immobility duration in TST as well as in FST. In TST, there was a statistically significant decrease in the immobility in all the groups when compared to the control (distilled water) group. But the reduction of immobility in FST did not show statistically significant reduction in immobility in the groups treated with vanillin when compared with control. In the chronic study group that received vanillin at a dose of 100mg/kg, the immobility reduction was significantly lower when compared to the group receiving fluoxetine. Conclusion: Vanillin at the dosage of 100mg/kg has demonstrated antidepressant activity in mice, which is comparable with fluoxetine.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Lithrea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. (Anacardiaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly used in traditional medicine in South America. AIM OF THE STUDY In the present study, the in vivo antinociceptive effect of L. molleoides' aqueous extract and its isolated compounds has been investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Antinociceptive activity was evaluated through writhing, formalin and hot plate tests in mice. The phytochemical analysis was performed. RESULTS The extract produced significant inhibition on nociception induced by acetic acid (ED50: 8.7 mg/kg, i.p.) and formalin (ED50: 7.7 mg/kg, i.p.) administered intraperitoneally and also orally. Yohimbine diminished the activity of the extract in the acetic acid test meanwhile haloperidol enhanced its effect. Two majority compounds, shikimic and vanillic acid were active in chemical nociceptive models used in this work, producing the highest inhibition of the writhing response at a dose of 30 mg/kg i.p. (55.4% and 57.1%, respectively) meanwhile at 100 mg/kg p.o. produced a slight response (23.3% and 23.9%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that L. molleoides' aqueous extract produced antinociception possibly related to the presence of shikimic and vanillic acid. The adrenergic and dopaminergic systems seem to be involved in the mechanism of antinociception of the extract.

Abstract
In the present study, the antinociceptive profiles of hop extract were characterized in ICR mice. Hop extract administered orally (from 25 to 100 mg/kg) showed an antinociceptive effect in a dose-dependent manner as measured in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. Antinociceptive action of hop extract was maintained at least for 60 min. Moreover, cumulative response time of nociceptive behaviors induced with intraplantar formalin injection was reduced by hop extract treatment during the 2nd phases. Furthermore, the cumulative nociceptive response time for intrathecal injection of substance P (0.7 µg) or glutamate (20 µg) was diminished by hop extract. Intraperitoneal pretreatment with naloxone (an opioid receptor antagonist) attenuated antinociceptive effect induced by hop extract in the writhing test. However, methysergide (a 5-HT serotonergic receptor antagonist) or yohimbine (an α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist) did not affect antinociception induced by hop extract in the writhing test. Our results suggest that hop extract shows an antinociceptive property in various pain models. Furthermore, the antinociceptive effect of hop extract may be mediated by opioidergic receptors, but not serotonergic and α2-adrenergic receptors.

Abstract
In the present study, the antinociceptive profiles of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb extract were examined in ICR mice. Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb extract administered orally (200 mg/kg) showed an antinociceptive effect as measured by the tail-flick and hot-plate tests. In addition, Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb extract attenuated the writhing numbers in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. Furthermore, the cumulative nociceptive response time for intrathecal (i.t.) injection of substance P (0.7 µg) was diminished by Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb extract. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) pretreatment with yohimbine (α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist) attenuated antinociceptive effect induced by Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb extract in the writhing test. Abstract
In the present study, the antinociceptive profiles of eugenol were examined in ICR mice. Eugenol administered orally (from 1 to 10 mg/kg) showed an antinociceptive effect in a dose-dependent manner as measured in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. Duration of antinociceptive action of eugenol maintained at least for 30 min. Moreover, the cumulative response time of nociceptive behaviors induced by an intraplantar formalin injection was reduced by eugenol treatment during the 2(nd) phases. Furthermore, the cumulative nociceptive response time for intrathecal injection of substance P (0.7 μg) or glutamate (20 μg) was diminished by eugenol. Abstract
Research on neuroactive drugs is a pharmaceutical sector of high interest and growth. The discovery of efficient drugs that can relieve pain is a subject of research in the pharmaceutical industry and academic field because pain is a symptom of many diseases. This review will summarize results on the discovery of essential oil constituents with analgesic-like activity from the chemical and pharmacological perspectives. Overall, 43 bioactive compounds were selected in nociception models. Among them, 62.8% were monoterpenes, 18.6% sesquiterpenes and other constituents represented 18.6%. The data show the potential of this group of natural product chemicals as analgesic drugs that may be useful for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
This study was done to determine the effect of stress on blood glucose regulation in ICR mice. The stress was induced by the electrical foot shock-witness model. Blood glucose level was found to be increased in the electrical foot shock-induced physical stress group. Furthermore, the blood glucose levels were also elevated in the emotional stress group in both physical and emotional stress groups. The blood glucose level reached maximum 30 min after stress stimulation and returned to normal level 2 h after stress stimulation in both physical and emotional stress groups. Subsequently, we observed that intraperitoneal injection of phentolamine (an α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist), yohimbine (an α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist) or RU486 (a glucocorticoid receptor blocker) significantly inhibited blood glucose level induced by both physical and emotional stress. The results of our study suggest that physical and emotional stress increases blood glucose level via activation of adrenergic and glucocorticoid system.
