Abstract
BACKGROUND Motivation for the study. There are few clinical and survival studies in Peru on thyroid cancer. BACKGROUND Main findings. Between the years 2010 to 2020, differentiated thyroid cancer was more frequent in women with early-stage disease, but survival was lower at five years compared to reports from other countries. BACKGROUND Implications. Thyroid cancer has increased in recent decades worldwide. It is important to have specialized and decentralized centers for the initial management and follow-up of these patients to avoid long-term complications or fatal outcomes and to have updated epidemiological information. BACKGROUND This study aimed at studying the clinical and anatomopathological characteristics, treatment and survival of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. A retrospective cohort study was conducted with data from 150 patients from a Peruvian hospital between the years 2010 to 2020. Characteristics and survival (Kaplan-Meier method) were described. The mean age was 48.3 years, 130 participants (86.7%) were women and the most frequent histologic type was papillary 94.6%. Of the participants, 74.2% had TNM stage I, 70.7% had total thyroidectomy and 68.7% received radioactive iodine. Overall survival at 5 years was 89.3%, being lower in those with TNM stage IV and higher in those who used radioactive iodine. In conclusion, in a hospital in Cusco, differentiated thyroid cancer was more frequent in women and survival was lower compared to reports from other countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increasing incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), particularly among women, has prompted an investigation into possible associated factors. The effect of oral contraceptive pill (OCP) usage is debatable, with varying and often conflicting results. It is not confirmed whether OCPs have a protective effect against thyroid cancer or an increased risk. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of OCP usage among females diagnosed with PTC at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. METHODS The study included females aged 18 and above diagnosed with PTC. An OCP user was defined as a female exposed to OCPs for at least one month. Data collection involved chart reviews and phone interviews, and statistical analyses were conducted using Excel and SPSS. RESULTS Among 58 female patients diagnosed with PTC, 29.3% (n=17) reported using OCPs, and 70.7% (n=41) were non-users. The ages of OCP users ranged from 26 to 56 years, with a median age of 44 years. The duration of OCP usage varied from 1 to 72 months, with a median duration of seven months. Additionally, for the non-users of OCPs, the age range was from 21 to 85 years, with a mean age of 46.4 years. The median ages for the total sample, OCP users, and non-users were 43.5, 44, and 43 years respectively. The timing of OCP usage among users varied from 1 to 35, with a mean timing of 13. CONCLUSION The study found about one-third 29.3% (n=17) of patients diagnosed with PTC reported using OCPs. These results contribute to the ongoing debate within epidemiological studies regarding the association between PTC and various reproductive factors, including OCP use. Further research is needed to clarify this relationship and its implications on public health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hysterectomy is commonly performed for benign uterine pathologies but there is some controversy over whether it is associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer. This study examines the associations of hysterectomy with ovarian conservation or with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and thyroid cancer incidence in Taiwan. METHODS We analyzed data from a nationwide health insurance claims database and identified 29,577 women aged ≥30 years who underwent hysterectomy with ovarian conservation or hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy between 2000 and 2016. Propensity score-matching analyses were performed at ratios of 1:1 for the hysterectomy and no-hysterectomy groups, to reduce selection bias. We monitored thyroid cancer occurrence in both groups until 2017. Cox regression was used to calculate hazard ratios with 95 % confidence intervals and determine thyroid cancer risk in women who underwent hysterectomy. RESULTS The study comprised 29,577 patients who underwent any hysterectomy and 29,577 participants who did not. The mean follow-up period was 10.03 ± 4.92 years. Patients who underwent hysterectomy had higher thyroid cancer incidence (4.72 per 10,000 person-years) than those who did not (3.06 per 10,000 person-years) and a greater risk of any thyroid cancer (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.40; 95 % confidence interval = 1.08-1.82). However, there was no association between hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and thyroid cancer incidence (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that women who undergo hysterectomy are at a higher risk of developing thyroid cancer than those who do not.

Abstract
Background Thyroid cancer, a leading type of endocrine cancer, accounts for 3-4% of all cancer diagnoses. This study aims to analyse and compare thyroid cancer patterns in China and the Group twenty (G20) countries, and predict these trend for the upcoming two decades. Methods This observational longitudinal study utilised data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019. We used metrics including incidence, mortality, mortality-incidence ratio (MIR), age-standardised rate (ASR) and average annual percent change (AAPC) to examine thyroid cancer trends. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to identify periods manifesting notable changes. The association between sociodemographic index (SDI) and AAPC were investigated. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was used to predict thyroid cancer trends from 2020 to 2040. Results From 1990 to 2019, thyroid cancer incidence cases in China increased by 289.6%, with a higher AAPC of age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) in men. Contrastingly, the G20 demonstrated a smaller increase, particularly among women over 50. Despite the overall age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) was higher in the G20, the increase in mortality was less pronounced than in China. Age-standardised incidence rate increased across all age groups and genders, with a notable rise among men aged 15-49. ASMR decreased in specific age groups and genders, especially among women. Conversely, the ASMR significantly increased in group aged over 70. The MIR exhibited a declining trend, but this decrease was less noticeable in men and the group aged over 70. Joinpoint analysis pinpointed significant shifts in overall ASIR and ASMR, with the most pronounced increase in ASIR during 2003-2011 in China and 2003-2010 in the G20. Predictions suggested a continual ASIR uptrend, especially in the 50-69 age group, coupled with a predicted ASMR downturn among the elderly by 2040. Moreover, the proportion of thyroid cancer deaths attributable to high body mass index (BMI) escalated, with significant increase in Saudi Arabia and a rise to 7.4% in China in 2019. Conclusions Thyroid cancer cases in incidence and mortality are escalating in both China and the G20. The increasing trend may be attributed to factors beyond overdiagnosis, including environmental and genetic factors. These findings emphasise the necessity for augmenting prevention, control, and treatment strategies. They also highlight the significance of international collaboration in addressing the global challenge posed by thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Background Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine system malignancy with a rapidly increasing incidence in China. Epidemiological data on TC at the national level are lacking. This study aimed to quantify the TC disease burden in China between 1990 and 2019 and evaluate the current status and trends of the disease burden attributed to a high body mass index (HBMI). Methods The 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study dataset was used to explore the TC disease burden. Age-standardized rates of incidence (ASIR), prevalence (ASPR), deaths (ASDR), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were considered and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated as a measure of the average change in age-standardized rates. The trend in TC-related mortality and DALYs attributed to an HBMI, accounting for different age groups and sexes, was examined. Results Between 1990 and 2019, the ASDR and DALYs for TC decreased by 0.02/100000 and 1.17/100000, respectively. The ASPR and ASIR increased by 9.88/100000 and 1.04/100000, respectively. The EAPC for ASDR, age-standardized rates of DALYs, ASPR, and ASIR were 0.06 (95% CI: -0.09, 0.21), -0.20 (95% CI: -0.31, -0.10), 3.52 (95% CI: 3.35, 3.68), and 2.73 (95% CI: 2.58, 2.88), respectively. TC-related deaths, DALYs, and their prevalence and incidence in China increased by 118%, 350%, 81%, and 290%, respectively. The disease burden of TC was higher among male than female patients in different age groups, with varying distributions. The disease burden attributed to HBMI gradually increased over the past 30 years according to age-standardized DALYs, particularly in male patients. Conclusion The TC burden has increased in China over the past 30 years, and population aging poses a challenge to TC prevention and control. HBMI has become an important factor in the TC disease burden and further research should focus on reducing the disease burden among Chinese male patients with TC.

Abstract
This study explored whether the risk of thyroid cancer in Asian women is associated with consumption of oral contraceptives (Diane-35). We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. From the database, 9865 women aged 18 to 65 years who were prescribed Diane-35 between 2000 and 2012 were included in the Diane-35 group, and 39,460 women who were not prescribed Diane-35 were included in the comparison group and were frequency-matched by age and index year. Both groups were followed until 2013 to calculate the incidence of thyroid cancer. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard model. The median (standard deviation) follow-up duration was 7.08 (3.63) and 7.04 (3.64) years in the Diane-35 and the comparison group, respectively. The incidence of thyroid cancer was 1.80-fold higher in the Diane-35 group than in the comparison group (2.72 vs 1.51 per 10,000 person-years). The cumulative incidence of thyroid cancer was significantly higher in the Diane-35 group than in the comparison group (log-rank test, P = .03). An elevated hazard ratio of thyroid cancer was observed in the Diane-35 group than in the comparison group (HR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.10-3.30). In subgroup analysis, patients aged 30 to 39 years showed a higher hazard ratio of developing thyroid cancer after consuming Diane-35 than those in the comparison group (HR: 5.58, 95% CI: 1.84-16.91). The study provides evidence that women aged 30 to 39 years consuming Diane-35 are at increased risk of thyroid cancer. Nevertheless, a larger population with a longer follow-up may be necessary to confirm causality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite extensive research on sex differences in primary thyroid cancer, there is a lack of data on the role of sex in the risk of developing second primary thyroid cancer (SPTC). We aimed to investigate the risk of SPTC development according to patient sex, with an emphasis concerning previous malignancy location as well as age. METHODS Cancer survivors diagnosed with SPTC were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The SEER*Stat software package obtained standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and absolute excess risks of subsequent thyroid cancer development. RESULTS Data for 9,730 (62.3%) females and 5,890 (37.7%) males were extracted for a total of 15,620 SPTC individuals. Asian/Pacific Islanders had the highest incidence of SPTC [SIR =2.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.49-2.86]. The risk of SPTC was higher in males (SIR =2.01, 95% CI: 1.94-2.08) than when compared to females (SIR =1.83, 95% CI: 1.79-1.88; P<0.001). Head and neck tumors had significantly higher SIRs for SPTC development in males when compared to females. CONCLUSIONS Survivors of primary malignancies have an increased risk SPTC, especially males. Our work suggests that oncologists and endocrinologists may consider the need for increased surveillance of both male and female patients given their increased risk of SPTC.

Abstract
Evidence regarding cancer risk after borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) is limited. We conducted a nationwide cohort study examining the incidence of nonovarian cancers in women with serous or mucinous BOTs compared with the general female population with up to 41 years of follow-up. Through the nationwide Pathology Registry, we identified nearly 5000 women with BOTs (2506 serous and 2493 mucinous) in Denmark, 1978 to 2018. We computed standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as relative risk estimates of specific nonovarian cancers. Compared with general female population rates, women with serous BOTs had increased rates of particularly malignant melanoma (SIR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.3-2.6), thyroid cancer (SIR = 3.0; 95% CI: 1.4-5.4) and myeloid leukemia (SIR = 3.2; 95% CI: 1.5-5.8), and women with mucinous BOTs had elevated rates of lung cancer (SIR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.3-2.1), pancreatic cancer (SIR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.2-2.9) and myeloid leukemia (SIR = 2.3; 95% CI: 0.9-4.7). We found no convincing association with neither breast nor colorectal cancer in women with BOTs. This is the first large nationwide study showing that women with specific types of BOTs have increased risks of several nonovarian cancers, likely due to some shared risk factors or genetic characteristics.

Abstract
Background: Hypertension (HTN) is known to increase the risk of thyroid cancer. However, few studies have explored the association between HTN and the prognostic factors of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 2838 PTC patients treated with surgery at our center between January 2017 and September 2020. The association between both HTN and antihypertensive drug use and the clinicopathological features of the PTC patients was analyzed. The odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using both univariate and multivariate logistic regression models, which were adjusted for the patients' age, sex, and thyroid-stimulating hormone level. Results: A total of 2838 patients were enrolled in this study, including 409 patients with HTN. In the multivariate analysis, HTN was associated with larger tumor size [OR = 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10-2.07], lymph node metastasis (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.02-1.99), and higher tumor stages (OR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.12-2.86). There was no statistical difference between females >40 years of age and any pathological features, while a positive association was observed between older males and larger tumors (OR = 1.87, 95% CI: 1.01-3.45), and lymph node metastasis (OR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.08-3.73). No statistical difference was found in the effects of taking alone calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II-receptor blockers, and their combination on the pathological features of PTC. Conclusion: PTC patients with HTN, particularly males of age >40, tend to have invasive features. Common antihypertension therapy appears to exert no effect on the pathological characteristics of these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine environmental factors that influence risk of thyroid cancer. METHODS We performed a case-control study utilizing thyroid cancer cases from the California Cancer Registry (1999-2012) and controls sampled in a population-based manner. Study participants were included if they were diagnosed with thyroid cancer, lived in the study area at their time of diagnosis, and were ≥35 years of age. Controls were recruited from the same area and eligible to participate if they were ≥35 years of age and had been living in California for at least 5 years prior to the interview. We examined residential exposure to 29 agricultural use pesticides, known to cause DNA damage in vitro or are known endocrine disruptors. We employed a validated geographic information system-based system to generate exposure estimates for each participant. RESULTS Our sample included 2067 cases and 1003 controls. In single pollutant models and within a 20-year exposure period, 10 out of 29 selected pesticides were associated with thyroid cancer, including several of the most applied pesticides in the United States such as paraquat dichloride [odds ratio (OR): 1.46 (95% CI: 1.23, 1.73)], glyphosate [OR: 1.33 (95% CI: 1.12, 1.58)], and oxyfluorfen [OR: 1.21 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.43)]. Risk of thyroid cancer increased proportionately to the total number of pesticides subjects were exposed to 20 years before diagnosis or interview. In all models, paraquat dichloride was associated with thyroid cancer. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides first evidence in support of the hypothesis that residential pesticide exposure from agricultural applications is associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Objectives Many experimental studies have reported that female sex hormones involve thyroid cancer development because the incidence rate of thyroid cancer in women (TCW) is 3 times higher than in men. Three previous systematic reviews reporting no association between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and TCW risk had the same search year of 2014. The aim was to reevaluate the association between HRT use and TCW risk using a meta-epidemiological study of prospective cohort studies. Methods The study preferentially used all studies selected by the existing systematic reviews and then secured an additional cohort from the list citing the studies. The selection criterion was defined as the prospective cohort study assessing the association between HRT and TCW risk by adjusted relative risk and its 95% confidence intervals (CI) from multivariate analysis. A random-effects model meta-analysis was applied to estimate summary relative risk (sRR) and its 95% CI. A publication bias was evaluated by Egger’s test; moreover, the statistical significance level was set at 5%. Results Nine cohort studies were finally selected. The random-effect model was applied because of heterogeneity (I2 = 64.3%). The sRR and its 95% CI from a random-effects model meta-analysis had no statistical significance in the association between HRT and TCW risk (sRR = 1.11; 95% CI, 0.98–1.26). Additionally, Egger’s test revealed no statistical significance (P = 0.91). Conclusions HRT is not associated with TCW risk based on the random-effects model meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies published until now.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between female medical history and thyroid cancer. Methods: Data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were collected from 2004 to 2016. Among a total of 1303 participants with thyroid cancer and 106,602 control (non-thyroid cancer) participants, the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of hysterectomy, oophorectomy, use of oral contraceptives, and number of children were evaluated. Results: The adjusted OR of hysterectomy for thyroid cancer was 1.73 (95% CI = 1.48-2.01, p < 0.001) in the minimally adjusted model. The adjusted ORs for thyroid cancer were 1.89 (95% CI = 1.06-3.37, p = 0.031), 0.89 (95% CI = 0.83-0.94, p < 0.001), and 0.85 (95% CI = 0.73-0.99, p = 0.040) for bilateral oophorectomy, number of children, and use of oral contraceptives, respectively, in the fully adjusted model. In the subgroup analysis, the adjusted ORs of bilateral oophorectomy were significant in the younger age (OR = 3.62, 95% CI = 1.45-9.03, p = 0.006), while the number of children was significant in the older age (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.80-0.93, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The ORs of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy were significantly higher in the thyroid cancer group in the younger age group. The adjusted ORs of the number of children were significantly low in the older age group.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking is a known cause of many cancers, yet epidemiologic studies have found protective associations with the risk of four "estrogen-related" malignancies: endometrial cancer, endometrioid and clear cell ovarian cancers, and thyroid cancer. This review considers epidemiologic and biological aspects of these associations, focusing particularly on estrogen signaling, and contrasts them with those for breast cancer, another estrogen-related malignancy. The observational findings regarding the inverse associations are consistent and remain after adjustment for possible confounding factors. In general, women who smoke do not have lower circulating estrogen levels than nonsmokers, eliminating one possible explanation for reduced risks of these malignancies. For endometrial and endometrioid ovarian cancer, the negative associations could plausibly be explained by interference with signaling through the estrogen receptor α. However, this is unlikely to explain the lower risks of thyroid and clear cell ovarian cancers. For thyroid cancer, an anti-inflammatory effect of nicotine and reduced TSH levels from smoking have been proposed explanations for the inverse association, but both lack convincing evidence. While the overall impact of cigarette smoking is overwhelmingly negative, protective associations such as those discussed here can provide potential clues to disease etiology, treatment, and prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of thyroid cancer in women is increasing at an alarming rate, with greatest risk in the reproductive years. Establishing relationships of hormonally related reproductive factors with thyroid cancer has been difficult. We aimed to elucidate potential risk factors for thyroid cancer in a large cohort of women. METHODS Among 116,228 women in the Nurses' Health Study II followed from 1989 to 2013, 620 cases of thyroid cancer were identified. We examined reproductive and hormone-related factors, including age at menarche, age at menopause, parity, oral contraceptive use, and postmenopausal hormone therapy use. Pregnancy, reproductive years, and months of breastfeeding were used as surrogate markers for exposure to endogenous reproductive hormones. We used multivariable Cox models to calculate relative risks and 95% confidence intervals for the associations between these factors and risk of thyroid cancer. RESULTS Number of reproductive years of 41 years or more was associated with more than double the risk of thyroid cancer compared with 30 years or fewer (relative risk, 2.20; 95% confidence interval, 1.19-4.06). The other variables analyzed (parity number, months of breastfeeding, age at menarche, menopausal status, and postmenopausal hormone therapy) were not associated with the risk of thyroid cancer. Women who entered menopause at age 45 years or older had a higher risk of thyroid cancer compared with women who entered menopause at a younger age. This result did not reach statistical significance; however, there was a linear trend between later age at menopause and increased risk of thyroid cancer (ptrend = .009). CONCLUSIONS This study used a unique large, longitudinal dataset to assess thyroid cancer risk factors and potential confounders over an extended time frame. Our key finding suggests increased risk of thyroid cancer may be associated with a variety of indicators of longer reproductive years. The Nurses' Health Study II has provided new insights into the hormonal risks associated with thyroid cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There have been considerable studies on the effects of reproductive factors on thyroid cancer risk, while findings are inconsistent. In this analysis, we aimed to investigate the associations between menstrual, reproductive and hormonal factors with thyroid cancer occurrence in a population of Chinese women. METHODS Using data from a 1:1 matched case-control study performed between 2015 and 2017 in Zhejiang Province of China, a second analysis of 2261 pairs of female subjects was conducted. The possible effects for thyroid cancer were evaluated in logistic regression models by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Later age at first pregnancy (for > 25 vs. ≦ 20 years, OR: 0.47, 95% CI 0.23-0.96) and longer duration of breast feeding (for 6-12 vs. ≦ 6 months, OR: 0.49, 95% CI 0.24-0.98) were significantly associated with decreased occurrence of thyroid cancer, while no trend was observed. Stratified by age at enrollment, only the association with duration of breast feeding remained significant, but limited to younger women (≦ 50 years). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that women with later age at first pregnancy or longer breast feeding duration were less likely to have thyroid cancer. These findings supported an influence role of reproductive factors in thyroid cancer risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer is the most common malignant endocrine disease worldwide. The changing epidemiologic pattern of thyroid cancer at the national level in China has remained unknown over the last three decades. METHODS Following the general analytical strategy used in the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019, the age- and sex-specific incidence, mortality, and prevalence rates of thyroid cancer in China were analyzed. Trends in the incidence, mortality, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to thyroid cancer from 1990 to 2019 were assessed by joinpoint regression analysis. Age, period, and cohort effects on incidence were estimated by an age-period-cohort model. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized prevalence and incidence rates significantly increased in both males and females, and the age-standardized mortality rate decreased in females but increased in males. Moreover, the increments in all the age-standardized measures of thyroid cancer in China were higher in males than in females. The age effect showed that those aged 40-44 years had the highest relative risk (RR) among females, and the RR increased with age among males. The incidence increased with time and began to substantially increase in 2009. The cohort effect showed that the incidence decreased in successive birth cohorts. CONCLUSIONS The burden of thyroid cancer in China showed unexpected patterns that varied by sex, age, and year. Notably, males had higher average annual percentage changes in thyroid cancer incidence and mortality rates than females. More attention should be given to improving the thyroid cancer burden in males in China.

Abstract
Background: Thyroid cancer is more common in women at reproductive age, suggesting the relationship between its high-incidence and therapeutic use of hormonal medications, such as oral contraceptives (OCPs). The aim of this study was to identify the effect of low-dose combined OCP (LD-COC) on proliferation, apoptosis, and migration of human papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) BCPAP cell line. Materials and Methods:
BCPAP cells were cultured and treated with the combination of 90nM levonorgestrel (LNG) and 20nM ethinylestradiol (EE) for 48 hours. Afterward, using 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, the proliferation of the cells was measured. Apoptosis was determined by using a Caspase-3 ELISA kit. Migratory properties of combined LNG and EE were studied through wound scratch assay. The expression levels of pro-apoptotic factor BAX, anti-apoptotic factor Bcl2, and proliferation marker Ki67 were analyzed by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blotting.
Results:
Upon treatment with the combination of LNG and EE, proliferation and migration of BCPAP cells were significantly enhanced. However, LNG and EE remarkably inhibited apoptosis of these cells. Furthermore, treating PTC cells with combined LNG and EE caused a marked increase in the expression of Bcl2 and Ki67 and a considerable decrease in BAX levels (P˂0.05).
Conclusion: Our data linked the use of COCs and the progression and aggressiveness of PTC, suggesting the role of these hormonal compounds as promoting factors for PTC tumors. Despite these observations, further investigations will be required to fully establish the pathogenic impact of these medications on PTC.

Abstract
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common subtype of differentiated thyroid cancers in Asian coastal cities, where the patients have increased risk of potentially high or excessive iodine intake. Given the high metastasis and recurrence of patients with BRAFV600E mutation, the mortality rate of thyroid cancer has recently shown an upward trend. A variety of therapies, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, have been used to treat thyroid cancer, but these therapies still have limitations, including postoperative complications, drug resistance, poor efficacy, or serious side effects. Recent studies have shown the potential of active ingredients derived from herbal medicine in inhibiting PTC via various cell signaling pathways. Some plant-derived compounds, such as apigenin, genistein, and curcumin, are also known to prevent and treat PTC. This article summarizes the recent advances in the structure-functional impact of anti-PTC active ingredients and their effects on PTC cells and tumor microenvironments with an emphasis on their challenges from basic research to clinical practice.

Abstract
Thyroid papillary microcarcinoma is now a common clinical problem. Cervical lymph node metastasis is the main metastasis mode of PTMC. However, before operation, it is still difficult to determine exactly whether PTMC patient is suffering with cervical lymph node metastasis. To resolve this dilemma, for better selection of optimum treatment plans, it is necessary to investigate the overall changes in proteomes of PTMC, and evaluate the potential of biomarkers to predict lymph node metastasis. Tandem mass tags combined with multidimensional liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses were used aiming to screen the proteomic profiles of fine-needle aspiration biopsy samples. Quantitative proteomic analysis, significant pathway and functional categories were investigated. In total, 3391 proteins of the 3793 protein groups identified were quantified. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that differentially expressed proteins were involved in multiple biological functions, metastasis-related pathways. Moreover, IFN-stimulated gene 15 proteins were found to be well distinguished between patients with lymph node metastatic and patients with nonmetastatic PTMC. Knocking down ISG15 with shRNA inhibited the xenografted tumor growth. This study provided a reference proteome map for lymph node metastatic PTMC. ISG15 probably is a prognosis marker of thyroid papillary microcarcinoma patients with lymph node metastasis. SIGNIFICANCE: Nowadays, thyroid cancer has become a widespread epidemic. The rate of thyroid cancer incidence has been faster than any other cancers, reported by the American Cancer Society. Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is a subset of PTC defined as PTC measuring≤1 cm in size, which comprises nearly one-half of all the cases of PTCs. Actually, the rapidly increasing global incidence of PTC is mainly attributed to the corresponding increase in the diagnosis of PTMC. Scholars have figuratively compared the increase of PTMC to the "tsunami". The treatment scheme for PTMC is still not uniform, and the controversy is mainly focused on the necessity of surgery treatment. PTMCs often have an indolent course in the absence of evidence of metastatic cervical lymph nodes, distant metastases and extrathyroidal extension. Therefore, it is important for us to reliably differentiate the small number of PTMC patients developing significant metastases progression from the larger population of patients that harbor indolent PTMCs. The present study aimed to investigate the overall changes in proteomes of PTMC, and evaluate the potential of biomarkers to predict lymph node metastasis. Tandem mass tags (TMT) combined with multidimensional liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses were used aiming to screen the proteomic profiles of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) samples. Quantitative proteomic analysis, significant pathway and functional categories were investigated. Our results showed that some differential expression proteins were likely to be important resources for finding new diagnostic biomarkers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancers are threefold more frequent in women than in men. A role of reproductive or hormonal factors has been suggested but with contradictory results. We investigated potential associations between history of hysterectomy, with or without oophorectomy, and history of benign gynaecological disease (uterine fibroids, endometriosis) and the incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer, in a large French prospective cohort. METHODS A total of 89 340 women from the E3N cohort were followed up between 1990 and 2012. Gynaecological diseases treated by surgery were self-reported. Thyroid cancers were validated by histological reports. Time-dependent covariates included smoking status, BMI and history of benign thyroid disease. Cox proportional hazard models with age as timescale were used to estimate Hazard Ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS A total of 412 cases of thyroid cancer were diagnosed during follow-up. A history of hysterectomy was associated with an increased risk of differentiated thyroid cancer (adjusted HR=2.05; 95%CI: 1.65-2.55). The association was not altered after further adjustment for reproductive factors. Endometriosis, uterine polyps, ovarian cysts and oophorectomy without hysterectomy were not associated with the risk of thyroid cancer. A history of fibroids was also significantly related to the risk of thyroid cancer over the follow-up period (adjusted HR=1.91; 95%CI: 1.50-2.44) and the increased risk persisted after adjustment for history of hysterectomy. CONCLUSIONS Women who had either a history of fibroids or hysterectomy had an increased risk of differentiated thyroid cancer. These findings suggest shared biological mechanisms between fibroids and thyroid cancer, which deserve to be further dissected.

Abstract
Combined estrogen-progestogen contraceptives (oral contraceptives or OCs) and progestogen-only contraceptives (POCs) are synthetic steroids that bind to steroid hormone receptors, which are widespread throughout the body. They have a profound effect on cellular physiology. Combined OCs have been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as Group 1 carcinogens, but their findings have not been updated recently. In order to update the information and better understand the impact that OCs and POCs have on the risk of development of cancers, a comprehensive literature search was undertaken, focusing on more recently published papers. In agreement with the IARC, the recent literature confirms an increased risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer with the use of OCs. The recent literature also confirms the IARC conclusion that OCs decrease the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers. However, there is little support from recent studies for the IARC conclusion that OCs decrease the risk of colorectal cancer or increase the risk of liver cancer. For liver cancer, this may be due to the recent studies having been performed in areas where hepatitis is endemic. In one large observational study, POCs also appear to increase the overall risk of developing cancer. OCs and POCs appear to increase the overall risk of cancer when carefully performed studies with the least intrinsic bias are considered. Summary OCs have been classified as cancer-causing agents, especially leading to increases in breast cancer and cervical cancer. A review of the recent scientific literature was performed to see whether this still appears to be the case. The recent literature supports the cancer-causing role of OCs especially for breast cancer and cervical cancer. Studies also indicate that progesterone-only contraceptives (such as implants and vaginal rings) also can cause cancer. This is especially true for breast cancer and cervical cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) is inconsistently associated with thyroid cancer risk. The purpose of this study was to summarize findings from cohort studies regarding the strength of the association of DM with subsequent thyroid cancer risk. METHODS Electronic searches were performed in PubMed, EmBase, and the Cochrane Library to identify studies from inception to July 2016. Cohort studies reporting risk estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of thyroid cancer in DM and non-DM patients were included. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed to the risk of thyroid cancer in DM compared with non-DM participants. RESULTS Sixteen cohort studies were included, with a total of 10,725,884 individuals. These studies reported a total of 8032 cases of thyroid cancer. Overall, DM was associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer (relative risk [RR], 1.20; 95% CI, 1.09-1.33; P < .001). Further, there was no significant difference was found between DM and non-DM for the risk of thyroid cancer in men (RR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.00-1.30; P = .057), while a significant correlation was found in a pooled analysis in women (RR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.06-1.17; P < .001). Finally, subgroup analyses suggested that country and mean age might correlate with the relationship between DM and the risk of thyroid cancer. CONCLUSION This study suggested that patients with DM have significantly increased risk of thyroid cancer compared nondiabetics. This positive association was prominent in women, and not significant in men. Further large-scale studies are required to verify the nature of the association, which should be evaluated in specific subpopulations.

Abstract
An association between parity and thyroid cancer risk has been investigated in a number of independent studies but yielded contradictory findings. The aim of this study was to explore the association between parity and thyroid cancer risk. The population-based cohort study in Lithuanian was conducted. The study dataset based on the linkages between all records from the 2001 population census, all cancer incidence records from the Lithuanian Cancer Registry, and all death and emigration records from Statistics Lithuania for the period between 6 April 2001 and 31 December 2009. Cox's proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) for parity, age at first birth, number of children, place of residence, education, and age at census. The cohort of 868,105 women was followed for 8.6 years, and 1775 thyroid cancer cases were diagnosed during the study period. The significantly higher thyroid cancer risk was observed among parous women (HR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.20, 1.75) and in women with 1, 2, and 3 children, after adjusting for the possible confounding effects of relevant demographic variables. The findings of this study are consistent with the hypothesis that parity might be associated with the risk of thyroid cancer in women.

Abstract
The three times higher incidence of thyroid cancer in women compared to men points to a role of female sex hormones in its etiology. However the effects of these factors are poorly understood. We analyzed the association between thyroid cancer and hormonal and reproductive factors among women enrolled in CATHY, a population-based case-control study conducted in France. The study included 430 cases of papillary thyroid cancer and 505 controls frequency-matched on age and area of residence. The odds ratios for thyroid cancer increased with age at menarche (p trend 0.05). Postmenopausal women were at increased risk, as compared to premenopausal women, particularly if menopause followed an ovariectomy, and for women with age at menopause <55years. In addition, use of oral contraceptives and menopausal hormone therapy reduced the association with thyroid cancer by about one third, and breastfeeding by 27%. Overall, these findings provide evidence that the risk of thyroid cancer increases with later age at menarche and after menopause, and decreases with use of oral contraceptives and menopausal hormone therapy. These findings confirm an implication of hormonal factors in papillary thyroid cancer risk, whose mechanisms need to be elucidated.

Abstract
Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is markedly more common in women than men, the highest female-to-male ratio being recorded during the reproductive period. This evidence has led to the suggestion that female hormonal and reproductive factors may account for the observed DTC gender disparity. This review focuses on current evidence on the risk of DTC in conjunction with major female reproductive factors, including the impact of pregnancy on DTC occurrence and progression/recurrence. Overall, studies exploring the link between the risk of DTC and menstrual and menopausal factors, oral contraceptives and/or hormone replacement therapy, showed these associations, if any, to be generally weak. Nonetheless, there is some evidence that higher levels of exposure to estrogens during reproductive years may confer an increased risk of DTC. As far as pregnancy is concerned, it is unclear whether a potential association between parity and risk of DTC actually exists, and whether it is enhanced in the short-term following delivery. A possible role for pregnancy-related factors in DTC progression has been recently suggested by some reports, the results of which are consistent with a worse outcome in the short-term of women diagnosed with DTC during gestation compared to non-pregnant control patients. Also, some progression of disease has been described in women with structural evidence of disease prior to pregnancy. However, there seems to be no impact from pregnancy in DTC-related death or overall survival. Several in vitro and animal studies have evaluated the influence of estrogens (E) and estrogen receptors (ERs) on thyroid cell proliferation. Presently available data are indicative of a role of E and ERs in thyroid cancer growth, although considerable discrepancies in respect to ER expression patterns in thyroid cancer tissues actually exist. Further studies providing more direct evidence on the possible role of E and of placental hormones and growth factors on thyroid growth may expand our knowledge on the mechanisms beyond the gender disparity of proliferative thyroid diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The association between breastfeeding and thyroid cancer risk is not consistent from epidemiological studies. To better clarify the association including assessing a potential dose-response relationship, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis. METHODS We searched PubMed (MEDLINE) up to November 2015 for prospective studies or case-control studies that evaluated the association between breastfeeding and risk of thyroid cancer. Effect estimates were pooled using a fixed-effects model. RESULTS Nine reports (2 prospective studies, 6 case-control studies and 1 pooled analysis of 14 case-control studies) involving 2423 cases and 350,081 non-cases were identified. After pooling relevant studies, there was a significant inverse association between ever breastfeeding and risk of thyroid cancer (RR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.83-0.99), with minor heterogeneity (I(2) = 10.1%). The dose-response analysis revealed a significant linear relationship between the duration of breastfeeding and risk of thyroid cancer. The summary RR for an increment of 1 month of breastfeeding with risk of thyroid cancer was 0.983 (95% CI 0.98-0.99). When focusing on cohort studies, a more prominent linear dose-response relationship was detected, with the combined RR for every increment of 1 month of breastfeeding to be 0.965 (95% CI 0.96-0.97). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis suggests that breastfeeding is potentially inversely associated with thyroid cancer risk. Also longer duration of breastfeeding may further decreases thyroid cancer risk. If validated in large-scale prospective studies, our findings may have implications for impacting women's decision in breastfeeding.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to investigate the association between 2 polymorphisms (ie, rs10877887 and rs13293512) in the promoter regions of let-7 and the risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).A case-control study of 618 PTC patients and 562 controls was conducted. The rs10877887 polymorphism was genotyped by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and the rs13293512 polymorphism was genotyped by using a TaqMan Genotyping Assay. The results were confirmed by DNA sequencing.The rs10877887 polymorphism had reduced risks of PTC in heterozygous comparison, dominant model, and overdominant model (TC vs TT: adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.73, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.58-0.94, P = 0.01; TC/CC vs TT: adjusted OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.63-1.00, P = 0.047; TC vs TT/CC: adjusted OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.57-0.92, P = 0.007, respectively). Stratified analyses showed that PTC patients carrying the rs10877887 CC genotype were more likely to have multiple tumors (adjusted OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.03-2.86, P = 0.04), and PTC patients carrying the rs13293512 TC + CC or CC were more likely to develop N0 status (TC/CC vs TT: adjusted OR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.43-0.94, P = 0.02; CC vs TC/TT adjusted OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.33-0.77, P = 0.001, respectively).Our study suggests that the rs10877887 polymorphism may be associated with the risk of PTC and the rs13293512 polymorphism may correlate to lymph node metastasis in PTC.
