Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease whose progression is fueled by proinflammatory moieties and limited by anti-inflammatory mediators. Whereas oxidative damage and the generation of oxidation-specific epitopes that act as damage-associated molecular patterns are highly inflammatory, IgM antibodies produced by B-1 and marginal zone B cells counteract unrestricted inflammation by neutralizing and encouraging clearance of these proinflammatory signals. In this review, we focus on describing the identities of IgM-producing B cells in both mice and humans, elaborating the mechanisms underlying IgM production, and discussing the potential strategies to augment the production of atheroprotective IgM. In addition, we will discuss promising therapeutic interventions in humans to help tip the scale toward augmentation of IgM production and to provide atheroprotection.

Abstract
The efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke has been established, but there are few reports on the effectiveness of MT for stroke patients with collagen disease. We report the case of a systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patient with cerebral infarction who underwent MT. A 48-year-old woman had been diagnosed with SLE for 30 years. She visited our hospital because of dizziness from the day before, but when she arrived at the hospital parking lot, she developed vomiting and impaired consciousness. An MRI revealed increased cerebellar hemisphere infarction and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) did not visualize the right vertebral artery or basilar artery. Urgent cerebral angiography was performed, and angiography of the right vertebral artery revealed occlusion of the V4 segment of the vertebral artery. In addition to these angiographic findings, the patient also had impaired consciousness and was judged to be in need of emergency revascularization treatment. We performed an MT using a stent retriever. Immediately after the angiography examination, reperfusion to the basilar artery and severe stenosis of the right vertebral artery were noted. Therefore, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and stent placement for vertebral artery stenosis were done. This procedure successfully maintained the patency of the vertebral artery and blood flow to the basilar artery. Her consciousness improved; she only had mild nausea and no remarkable neurological findings.

Abstract
Since the end of the 20th century, it has been clear that atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease. However, the main triggering mechanism of the inflammatory process in the vascular walls is still unclear. To date, many different hypotheses have been put forward to explain the causes of atherogenesis, and all of them are supported by strong evidence. Among the main causes of atherosclerosis, which underlies these hypotheses, the following can be mentioned: lipoprotein modification, oxidative transformation, shear stress, endothelial dysfunction, free radicals' action, homocysteinemia, diabetes mellitus, and decreased nitric oxide level. One of the latest hypotheses concerns the infectious nature of atherogenesis. The currently available data indicate that pathogen-associated molecular patterns from bacteria or viruses may be an etiological factor in atherosclerosis. This paper is devoted to the analysis of existing hypotheses for atherogenesis triggering, and special attention is paid to the contribution of bacterial and viral infections to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
The presence of disease-specific antigens and autoantibodies in the sera of patients with atherosclerosis-related diseases has been widely reported and is considered to result from inflammation of the arterial wall and the involvement of immune factors. The aim of this study was to identify a novel antibody in patients with ischemic stroke by serological identification of antigens using recombinant cDNA expression cloning from patients who had a transient ischemic attack (TIA). We identified the serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade E member 1 (SERPINE1), as a candidate antigen. The serum anti-SERPINE1 antibody levels quantified using amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay-linked immunosorbent assay were significantly higher in patients with ischemic stroke, including those with acute cerebral infarction (aCI), TIA, and chronic cerebral infarction, than in healthy donors. The antibody levels were strongly associated with old age, female sex, and presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Age and intima-media thickness of the carotid artery were positively correlated with antibody levels, which suggests that SERPINE1 may reflect the progression of atherosclerosis. In a multivariate analysis, SERPINE1 antibody level was an independent predictor of aCI. Thus, the serum levels of anti-SERPINE1 antibody could potentially serve as a biomarker of atherothrombotic infarction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mitral annulus calcification (MAC) is a chronic, non-inflammatory, degenerative mechanism of the fibrous base of the mitral valve. While MAC was originally thought to be an age-related degenerative process, there is evidence that other mechanisms, such as atherosclerosis and abnormal calcium phosphorus metabolism, also contribute to the development of MAC. AREAS COVERED This paper summarizes, existing perception of clinically valid definition of MAC and the pathophysiological processes that lead to the development of MAC and the diagnostic implications of this disease entity. EXPERT OPINION Minimal evidence exists on the natural history and progression of MAC. Characterization of MAC progression and identification of predisposing risk factors can help to validate hypotheses. MAC is most commonly asymptomatic and incidental finding. Echocardiography is the primary imaging modality for identification and characterization of MAC and associated mitral valve (MV) disease. For patients with an indication for MV surgery, computed tomography (CT) is a complementary imaging modality for MAC. MAC is generally recognized by its characteristic density, location, and shape on echocardiography and CT, unusual variants are sometimes confused with other lesions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A high level of total cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is considered the main cause of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. For this reason, experimental atherosclerosis is induced by creating high blood cholesterol in animals. However, the hypothesis that atherosclerotic processes are mostly caused by immune (autoimmune) mechanisms has recently been gaining traction. At the same time, no experimental model has been developed that clearly demonstrates the autoimmune mechanism by which atherosclerosis develops and reproduces the full picture of atherosclerosis solely by means of an immune response, without resorting to additional interventions such as a high-cholesterol diet or the use of genetic models of hyperlipidemia. Previously, we were able to induce atherosclerosis-like lesions in the aorta and the development of pericardial fat in rats by immunizing them with human native lipoproteins. The purpose of this study was to test whether atherosclerosis can be induced in normocholesterolaemic rabbits by immunizing them with human native high-density lipoproteins (hnHDL). METHODS Rabbits were immunized with hnHDL. Aortic wall structure, plasma cholesterol level, and antibodies against HDL were studied. RESULTS Immunization with hnHDL was found to cause atherosclerosis-like lesions in the rabbit aorta such as adipocytic and chondrocytic metaplasia, proteoglycan deposits, leukocytic infiltration. Atherosclerosis-like lesions developed in the aorta of hnHDL-immunized rabbits against a background of normal blood LDL-cholesterol level. Therefore, a high plasma cholesterol level is not the sole cause of atherosclerosis. The immune response against HDL is an independent cause of atherogenesis. CONCLUSIONS A rabbit model of atherosclerosis caused by immunization with hnHDL can be widely used to examine the mechanisms occurring during atherogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS The TCR repertoires of 9 unstable angina patients (UA), 14 acute myocardial infarction patients (AMI) and 9 normal coronary artery (NCA) patients were profiled using high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The clonal diversity of the TCR repertoires in different groups was analyzed, as well as the frequencies of variable (V), diversity (D) and joining(J) gene segments. RESULTS ACS patients including UA and AMI, showed reduced TCRβ diversity than NCA patients. ACS patients presented higher levels of clonal expansion. The clonotype overlap of complementarity determining region 3(CDR3) was significantly varied between different groups. A total of 10 V genes and 1 J gene were differently utilized between ACS and NCA patients. We identified some shared CDR3 amino acid sequences that were presented in ACS but not in NCA patients. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed the distinct TCR repertoires in patients with ACS and demonstrated the presence of disease associated T-cell clonotypes. These findings suggested a role of T cells in ACS and provided a new way to explore the mechanisms of ACS.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, especially in developed countries, and atherosclerosis (AS) is the common pathological basis of many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as coronary heart disease (CHD). The role of the gut microbiota in AS has begun to be appreciated in recent years. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), an important gut microbe-dependent metabolite, is generated from dietary choline, betaine, and L-carnitine. Multiple studies have suggested a correlation between plasma TMAO levels and the risk of AS. However, the mechanism underlying this relationship is still unclear. In this review, we discuss the TMAO-involved mechanisms of atherosclerotic CVD from the perspective of inflammation, inflammation-related immunity, cholesterol metabolism, and atherothrombosis. We also summarize available clinical studies on the role of TMAO in predicting prognostic outcomes, including major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), in patients presenting with AS. Finally, since TMAO may be a novel therapeutic target for AS, several therapeutic strategies including drugs, dietary, etc. to lower TMAO levels that are currently being explored are also discussed.

Abstract
Glaucoma, one of the most common causes of blindness worldwide, is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease characterized by damage of retinal ganglion cells and optic nerve degeneration. However, the exact mechanism leading to glaucoma is still not understood. Evidences suggest an immunological involvement in the pathogenesis. Among other immune responses, altered autoantibody patterns were found in glaucoma patients. Especially elevated antibody levels against heat shock proteins (HSPs), like HSP27 or HSP60, were identified. In an animal model, an immunization with these HSPs induced a pressure-independent retinal ganglion cell degeneration and axon loss, hence mimicking glaucoma-like damage. In addition, development of autoreactive antibodies, as well as a glia and T-cell activation, were described in these animals. Recently, we noted that intravitreal HSP27 injection likewise led to a degeneration of retinal ganglion cells and their axons. Therefore, HSP27 might have a direct damaging effect on retinal cells, and might play a key role in glaucoma.

Abstract
Background T cells are key regulators of immunity and one of the cells recruited in atherosclerosis and participated in various stages of the development of atherosclerosis. Characterizing T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoires is a priority of great scientific interest and potential clinical utility for the early diagnosis, risk stratification and prognostic evaluation of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods The TCR repertoires in 21 subjects including 7 patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), 6 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and 8 subjects with normal coronary artery (NCA) as control were characterized by using high-throughput sequencing. Bioinformatics analysis were performed. Results Patients with NSTEMI displayed more diverse TCR sequences than NCA controls, but they had lower percentage of top 200 TCR sequences. However, no significant differences were observed between the patients with STEMI and NCA controls, but STEMI group had lower percentage of top 200 TCR sequences. T cells from patients with AMI and NCA controls showed a differential V and J gene usage, especially, significant difference was observed in frequencies of V gene (TRBV2, TRBV29-1, TRBV30 and TRBV12-3) and J gene (TRBJ2-1) usage. Furthermore, significantly differences in average overlap was observed in groups of AMI and NCA control. The results showed that patients with AMI had distinct TCR repertoires which revealed the association between cardiovascular condition and T-cell clonotypes. Conclusions Our findings revealed the differences of TCR repertoires between patients with AMI and NCA controls, which might be potential biomarkers for evaluating risk stratification or diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Previous research suggests that everyday discrimination is associated with worse episodic memory and partially mediates Black-White disparities in memory aging. The biological mechanisms underlying the link between everyday discrimination and memory are unclear but may involve inflammatory processes. This study aimed to determine whether systemic inflammation, indexed by blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), mediates associations between everyday discrimination and episodic memory over 6 years. DESIGN A longitudinal mediation model quantified associations between baseline everyday discrimination, 4-year change in CRP, and 6-year change in episodic memory. SETTING The Health and Retirement Study (HRS). PARTICIPANTS 12,624 HRS participants aged 51 and older. MEASUREMENTS Everyday Discrimination Scale, high-sensitivity CRP assays of dried blood spots, composite scores of immediate and delayed recall of a word list. RESULTS Black participants reported greater everyday discrimination. Greater discrimination was associated with lower baseline memory and faster memory decline. Higher CRP at baseline partially mediated the negative association between discrimination and baseline memory, but CRP change did not mediate the association between discrimination and memory decline. CONCLUSION This U.S.-representative longitudinal study provides evidence for deleterious effects of discrimination on subsequent episodic memory. The fact that elevated CRP only partially explained the concurrent association between discrimination and memory highlights the need for more comprehensive investigations of biological mechanisms underlying the link between social stress and age-related memory decline in order to better characterize potential intervention targets to reduce racial inequalities in memory aging.

Abstract
AIMS Despite the therapeutic efficacy of statins and antiplatelet agents for atherosclerosis, monotherapy with each drug alone is often insufficient to achieve the patient's therapeutic goals. We previously showed that combined statin/antiplatelet agent/anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agent therapy (pravastatin/sarpogrelate/etanercept) reduces atherosclerotic lesions by inhibiting TNF, an atherogenic cytokine that contributes to the progression of arteriosclerosis. In addition, our previous study showed that combined treatment with pravastatin and cilostazol is effective for reducing TNF-driven inflammation through anti-TNF activity. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the additive effects of combined pravastatin and cilostazol therapy on atherosclerotic progression using low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) knockout (KO) mice. METHODS Ten-week-old LDLR KO mice were fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet and orally administered pravastatin and cilostazol alone or in combination. Body weight, plasma lipid levels, and the levels of intracellular adhesion molecules and inflammatory cytokines were analyzed. In addition, aortas and aortic roots were stained with Oil Red O, and atherosclerotic plaques were quantified. RESULTS The atherosclerotic plaques in the combined pravastatin and cilostazol treatment groups were significantly reduced compared to those in each drug monotherapy group. The combination therapy group also showed the downregulation of ICAM-1, MOMA-2, TNF, interleukin (IL)-6, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels and the upregulation of high-density lipoprotein levels compared to those of the pravastatin- or cilostazol-treated groups. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that combination therapy with pravastatin and cilostazol exerts beneficial effects by decreasing atherosclerotic lesion progression and improving the pro-inflammatory state in the vascular endothelium. These effects are mediated by the reduction in adhesion molecule expression, immune cell infiltration, and cytokine levels and the antiatherosclerotic modulation of serum cholesterol levels. Therefore, we conclude that combined treatment with pravastatin and cilostazol may be a more effective antiatherosclerotic strategy than treatment with either agent alone.

Abstract
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) bear an increased risk of ischemic stroke. However, evidences for treating acute stroke due to artery thrombosis in SLE patients are extremely limited. A 45-year-old woman experienced sudden left hemiplegia. She was transported to the emergency department of our hospital 2 hours after the initial symptom. According to the medical records, the patient was diagnosed with SLE at the age of 28. CT scanned 150 min after the initial symptom showed no evidence of acute changes or hemorrhage. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) revealed occlusion of the right proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA). Ischemic stroke was diagnosed and NIHSS scored 11. The occluded MCA was successfully recanalized with intravenous rtPA. Sequent vascular imaging and serological results indicated that the etiology of the occlusion in right MCA was SLE vasculitis. The patient attained a mRS of 3 at the 3-month follow-up. The case is the first one in the literature that acute ischemic stroke related to SLE vasculitis was treated successfully with intravenous rtPA thrombolysis. The feasibility of intravenous thrombolysis for stroke related to SLE warrant further study.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arteries associated with various risk factors that promote lipid abnormalities, development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions, plaque rupture, and vascular thrombosis. Atherosclerosis is accelerated in autoimmune diseases. Non-invasive investigations showed increased intima-media thickness (IMT), carotid plaque, and coronary artery calcifications in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and mixed connective tissue disease compared to controls. The balance between the proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines allows the immune equilibrium to be maintained. In autoimmune diseases the prevalence of proinflammatory factors leads to premature atherosclerosis. This review presents complementary knowledge on innate and adaptive immunity, cytokines and the role of inflammasomes in progression of early atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a process initiated by accumulation of macrophages in distinct areas of endothelial cell damage and uptake of large amounts of lipids. Recently, it has been shown that the immune system plays an active part in the progression of the atherosclerotic plaque although its precise role has not yet been elucidated. Anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) are generally found in the sera of patients with the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and are associated with a prothrombotic state. Several authors have demonstrated that aCL can activate platelets and endothelial cells as well as increase oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) uptake by macrophages. In the present study we sought to assess the effect of immunization with aCL (Ab1, leading to the production of mouse aCL-Ab3) on the progression of atherosclerosis. Two groups of 8-weeks old female LDL-receptor knockout mice (n = 13 per group) were immunized with IgG purified from the serum of an APS patient or with normal human IgG, respectively. The aCL immunized mice developed high titres of 'self' aCL (detected using the standard aCL ELISA) as compared with the normal human IgG immunized mice, whereas no differences were noted between both study groups with respect to the serum lipid levels. The extent of fatty streak formation was significantly higher in the aCL immunized mice in comparison with the human IgG injected mice (mean aortic lesion size of 5308 ± 471 μm2 vs 1027 ± 184 μm2, respectively, P < 0.01). The immunohistochemical analysis of the atherosclerotic plaques from both mouse groups did not display differences in cellular composition. The results of the study show that mouse aCL induced by immunization with human aCL from an APS patient enhance atherogenesis in LDL-RKO mice and imply that these antibodies may play a role in atherosclerosis development in patients with the APS.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the artery wall, and both innate and adaptive immunity play important roles in the pathogenesis of this disease. In several experimental and human experiments of early atherosclerotic lesions, it has been shown that the first pathogenic event in atherogenesis is intimal infiltration of T cells at predilection sites. These T cells react to heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), which is a ubiquitous self-antigen expressed on the surface of endothelial cells (ECs) together with adhesion molecules in response to classical risk factors for atherosclerosis. When HSP60 is expressed on the EC surface, it can act as a "danger-signal" for both cellular and humoral immune reactions. Acquired by infection or vaccination, beneficial protective immunity to microbial HSP60 and bona fide autoimmunity to biochemically altered autologous HSP60 is present in all humans. Thus, the development of atherosclerosis during aging is paid by the price for lifelong protective preexisting anti-HSP60 immunity by harmful (auto)immune cross-reactive attack on arterial ECs maltreated by atherosclerosis risk factors. This is supported by experiments, which shows that bacterial HSP60 immunization can lead and accelerate experimental atherosclerosis. This review article presents accumulating proof that supports the idea that tolerization with antigenic HSP60 protein or its peptides may arrest or even prevent atherosclerosis by increased production of regulatory T cells and/or anti-inflammatory cytokines. Recent data indicates that HSP60, or more likely some of its derivative peptides, has immunoregulatory functions. Therefore, these peptides may have important potential for being used as diagnostic agents or therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Carotid artery plaque ulceration (PU) is known to be associated with cerebrovascular events (CVE). Even within euthyroid ranges, thyroid function has been reported to be associated with carotid atherosclerosis. However, the relationship between thyroid function and carotid PU remains unclear. Our aim was to determine the relationship between thyroid function and PU in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis (ICS). Records of patients with CVE were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 250 consecutive patients with ICS who had computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the carotid arteries following hospitalization were included in the study. CTA was used for the evaluation of carotid artery plaque morphology and ulceration. Plaque morphology was classified as fatty, mixed or calcified. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of PU. Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and hypothyroidism were significantly more common in patients with PU (p < 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively). Patients with PU had higher incidence of low-normal FT4 levels (p = 0.02). Compared with patients who had no PU, patients with PU had decreased FT4 levels and elevated TSH levels (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). TSH level (OR 1.33, p = 0.001), SCH (OR 4.2, p = 0.001), hypothyroidism (OR 3.15, p = 0.037), fatty plaque (OR 2.16, p = 0.01) and calcified plaque (OR 0.19, p < 0.001) were independently associated with PU. Our results suggest that SCH and hypothyroidism could be a risk factor for PU and subsequent CVE. Thyroid functions may be useful for risk stratification of patients with ICS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Investigation of the diversity of human secretory phospholipases A2 (sPLA2) on the migration of human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). MATERIAL We investigated the impact of sPLA2 IIA, V, and X and of oleic acid, linoleic acid and lysophosphatidylcholine on the migration of human VSMC. METHODS Recombinant human sPLA2's and Boyden's chamber method were applied. RESULTS sPLA2, IIA but not V or X enhanced migration of VSMC in a dose/time dependent manner. Oleic and linoleic acids, and lysophosphatidylcholine markedly enhanced migration. CONCLUSIONS These results imply that sPLA2 IIA, which is known to be present in the arterial wall in the vicinity of VSMC, as well as products of lipid hydrolysis induced by sPLA2, enhance the migration of VSMC, and thus may contribute to atherogenic process.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the artery wall. Adaptive immunity plays a key role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Recently, modulation of the immune response against atherosclerotic plaque antigen(s) has attracted attention as a potentially preventive and therapeutic approach. Here, we review a series of studies on immunization with various antigens targeting treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis-related antigens include oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL), apolipoprotein B-100 (ApoB-100) and heat shock protein (HSP) 60/65. Accumulating evidence supports the idea that immunization with these antigenic proteins or peptides may reduce atherosclerosis. In this review, we discuss the current status of immunization studies and possible associated mechanisms of atheroprotection.

Abstract
Unique innate immunity-linked γδT cells have been seen in early human artery lesions, but their role in lesion development has received little attention. Here we investigated whether γδT cells modulate atherogenesis in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE KO) mice. We found that γδT cell numbers were markedly increased in the proximal aorta of ApoE-deficient vs. wild-type mice during early atherogenesis, particularly in the aortic root and arch, where they comprised most of the T cells and lesion progression is most rapid. γδT cells infiltrated intimal lesions in ApoE KO mice, but only the adventitia in wild-type mice, and were more prevalent than CD4+ T cells in early nascent lesions, as evaluated by en face confocal microscopy. These aortic γδT cells produced IL-17, but not IFN-γ, analyzed by ex vivo FACS. Furthermore, aortic arch lipid accumulation correlated strongly with abundance of IL-17-expressing splenic γδT cells in individual ApoE KO mice. To investigate the role of these γδT cells in early atherogenesis, we analyzed ApoE/γδT double knockout (DKO) compared to ApoE KO mice. We observed reduced early intimal lipid accumulation at sites of nascent lesion formation, both in chow-fed (by 40%) and Western diet-fed (by 44%) ApoE/γδT DKO mice. In addition, circulating neutrophils were drastically reduced in these DKO mice on Western diet, while expansion of inflammatory monocytes and splenic Th1 or Th17 lymphocytes was not affected. These data reveal, for the first time, a pathogenic role of γδT cells in early atherogenesis in ApoE KO mice, by mechanisms likely to involve their IL-17 production and induction of neutrophilia. Targeting γδT cells thus might offer therapeutic benefit in atherosclerosis or other inflammatory vascular diseases.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is the leading global cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a highly conserved family of proteins with diverse functions expressed by all cells exposed to environmental stress. Studies have reported that several HSPs may be potential risk markers of atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases, or may be directly involved in the atherogenic process itself. HSPs are expressed by cells in atherosclerotic plaque and anti-HSP has been reported to be increased in patients with vascular disease. Autoimmune responses may be generated against antigens present within the atherosclerotic plaque, including HSP and may lead to a cycle of ongoing vascular injury. It has been suggested that by inducing a state of tolerance to these antigens, the atherogenic process may be limited and thus provide a potential therapeutic approach. It has been suggested that anti-HSPs are independent predictors of risk of vascular disease. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of HSP in cardiovascular disease and highlight their potential role as diagnostic agents and therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Background and Aim. We aim to elucidate the association of risk factors for atherosclerosis and H. pylori infection according to the promotor polymorphism of the CD14 gene in healthy Korean population. Methods. The patients who visited our hospital for routine health examinations and 266 healthy adults (170 males and 96 females) were enrolled in this study. The promotor polymorphism at -159C/T of the CD14 gene was determined by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. According to genetic polymorphism and H. pylori infection, we analyzed the risk of atherosclerosis. Results. The genotype frequencies were CC 7.9%, CT 45.1%, and TT 47.0%, respectively. There were no differences between specific genotypes of CD14 gene and H. pylori infection rate. As for HDL cholesterol level, there were significant differences among the three genotypes (P < 0.01). In subjects with H. pylori infection, no significant differences were observed between specific genotypes of CD14 gene and the risk factors of atherosclerosis. Conclusion. The promotor polymorphism at -159C/T of the CD14 gene was associated with the risk factor of atherosclerosis in healthy Korean population. However, it was not associated with the rate of H. pylori infection and H. pylori induced atherosclerotic risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multi-marker approaches for risk prediction in coronary artery disease (CAD) have been inconsistent due to biased selection of specific know biomarkers. We have assessed the global proteome of CAD-affected and unaffected subjects, and developed a pathway network model for elucidating the mechanism and risk prediction for CAD. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 252 samples (112 CAD-affected without family history and 140 true controls) were analyzed by Surface-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) by using CM10 cationic chips and bioinformatics tools. RESULTS Out of 36 significant peaks in SELDI-TOF MS, nine peaks could do better discrimination of CAD subjects and controls (area under the curve (AUC) of 0.963) based on the Support Vector Machine (SVM) feature selection method. Of the nine peaks used in the model for discrimination of CAD-affected and unaffected, the m/z corresponding to 22,859 was identified as stress-related protein HSP27 and was shown to be highly associated with CAD (odds ratio of 3.47). The 36 biomarker peaks were identified and a network profile was constructed showing the functional association between different pathways in CAD. CONCLUSION Based on our data, proteome profiling with SELDI-TOF MS and SVM feature selection methods can be used for novel network biomarker discovery and risk stratification in CAD. The functional associations of the identified novel biomarkers suggest that they play an important role in the development of disease.

Abstract
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a highly conserved group of proteins that are constitutively expressed and function as molecular chaperones, aiding in protein folding and preventing the accumulation of misfolded proteins. In the arterial wall, HSPs have a protective role under normal physiologic conditions. In disease states, however, HSPs expressed on the vascular endothelial cell surface can act as targets for detrimental autoimmunity due to their highly conserved sequences. Developing therapeutic strategies for atherosclerosis based on HSPs is challenged by the need to balance such physiologic and pathologic roles of these proteins. This paper summarizes the role of HSPs in normal vascular wall processes as well as in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The potential implications of HSPs in clinical therapies for atherosclerosis are also discussed.

Abstract
Dentist and oral health screening may be the latest weapon in identifying persons at risk of cardiovascular disease. Oral infections, specifically periodontitis, may confer independent risks for different systemic conditions. The risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases also suggest that the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes works in both ways. The aim of this study was to support and strengthen the association and relationship between oral hygiene status of individuals with cardiovascular diseases and its associated risk factors. A simple random sampling was carried out in 200 inhabitants of Western Utter Pradesh, India. An oral health visit and examination was made for an equal number of males and females of different age groups with cardiovascular diseases. Evaluation of the oral status was made by means of an oral hygiene index, community periodontal index of treatment needs and loss of attachment. Evaluation of oral status in patients with cardiovascular diseases and in the control group has shown a statistically significant low level of oral health in patients with cardiovascular diseases as compared to control. Prevalence of systemic diseases in different age groups significantly correlated with the prevalence of severe periodontal diseases. Treating gum disease may reduce the risk of heart disease and improve health outcomes for patients with periodontal disease and vascular heart problems.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disproportionately affects the African American population and usually presents with a constellation of symptoms. Along with hematologic, musculoskeletal, serous and skin involvement, the most common causes of morbidity are attributed to altered blood rheology causing accelerated atherosclerotic vascular disease (ASVD). ASVD occurs in predominantly premenopausal women at an age where ASVD is rare or uncommon. Classical central nervous system manifestations are very rare from the outset of the disease. Here we present a 44-year old African American woman with newly diagnosed SLE and no significant atherosclerotic risk factors, who presented initially with symptoms of subacute stroke.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A randomized controlled clinical trial was performed to examine the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture on body weight loss and its impact on lipid profile, and immunologic and inflammatory markers in obese subjects. METHODS Participants (n=204) were randomized to therapeutic acupuncture and control groups. Subjects received authentic (cases) or sham (controls) acupuncture for 6 weeks (first period) in combination with a low-calorie diet. In the next 6 weeks (second period), the low-calorie diet was used on its own. Subjects were assessed at the beginning and 6 and 12 weeks later. In addition to anthropometric and lipid parameters, serum anti-heat shock protein (Hsp)-27, 60, 65, 70 and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were assessed. RESULTS In the first period, anthropometric parameters and hs-CRP changed significantly in both groups, while significant changes in anti-Hsp antibodies were only observed in case subjects. In the second period, which shows the sustainable effects of acupuncture, changes in anthropometric parameters were more prominent in controls, while significant reductions in the group receiving authentic acupuncture were maintained for anti-Hsp antibodies. A comparison between the first and second period in both groups showed that the changes for most of the parameters were more significant in the first period. Comparison between cases and controls showed that authentic acupuncture was more effective in reducing the levels of anthropometric factors and anti-Hsp antibodies but not hs-CRP. CONCLUSIONS Auricular acupuncture in combination with diet restriction was effective for weight loss and dyslipidemia. Moreover, it was found that it has immunomodulatory but not anti-inflammatory effects on the immune system by regulation of the levels of anti-Hsp antibodies.

Abstract
A randomized controlled clinical trial in 196 obese subjects was performed to examine the effectiveness of body acupuncture on body weight loss, lipid profile and immunogenic and inflammatory markers. Subjects received authentic (cases) or sham (controls) acupuncture for 6 weeks in combination with a low-calorie diet. In the following 6 weeks, they received the low-calorie diet alone. Subjects were assessed at the beginning, 6 and 12 weeks later. Heat shock protein (Hsps)-27, 60, 65, 70 antibody titers and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were also assessed. A significant reduction in measures of adiposity and improvement in lipid profile were observed in both groups, but the levels of anti-Hsp-antibodies decreased in cases only. A reduction in anthropometric and lipid profile in cases were sustained in the second period, however, only changes in lipid profile were observed in the control group. Anti-Hsp-antibodies and hs-CRP levels continued to be reduced in cases but in controls only the reduction in hs-CRP remained. Changes in anthropometric parameters, lipid profile, and anti-Hsp-antibodies were more evident in cases. Body acupuncture in combination with diet restriction was effective in enhancing weight loss and improving dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Heat shock protein-65 (Hsp65) is an important pro-atherogenic factor, but nasal immunization of Hsp65 can induce immune tolerance and reduce atherosclerotic inflammation. Here, we describe the effects of different forms of Hsp65 antigen inoculated, i.e. Hsp65 DNA, Hsp65 protein, Hsp65 DNA prime combined with Hsp65 protein boost, on high-cholesterol-diet-driven rabbit atherosclerosis lesions. The results showed that sera anti-Hsp65 IgG antibodies were lower induced and protective anti-Hsp65 IgA in nasal cavity and lung were induced after rabbits were immunized with different forms of Hsp65. However, the avidity between Hsp65 IgG antibody and antigen is different. Hsp65 DNA prime-protein boost could further improve the avidity compared with Hsp65 DNA immunization alone, but only immunization with Hsp65 protein alone obtain the best avidity. In addition, more protective IL-10 and less adverse IFN-γ were produced and sera TC and LDL-C were decreased obviously at different extents in immunized groups. As a result, atherosclerosis lesions were significantly attenuated, but only nasal immunization with Hsp65 protein alone may be the best effective form of Hsp65 antigen to control atherosclerotic lesions. The results demonstrated that different forms of Hsp65 antigen could produce different effects in the treatment of atherosclerosis. Immunization mucosally with Hsp65 protein could be a promising therapeutic method for atherosclerosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Skin and ear infections, primarily caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), are recurrent problems for saturation divers, whereas infections caused by P. aeruginosa are seldom observed in healthy people outside saturation chambers. Cystic fibrosis (CF) patients suffer from pulmonary infections by P. aeruginosa, and it has been demonstrated that CF patients have high levels of autoantibodies against Heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) compared to controls, probably due to cross-reacting antibodies induced by P. aeruginosa. The present study investigated whether rats immunised with P. aeruginosa produced autoantibodies against their own HSP60 and whether diving influenced the level of circulating anti-HSP60 antibodies. METHODS A total of 24 rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups ('immunised', 'dived' and 'immunised and dived'). The rats in group 1 and 3 were immunised with the bacteria P. aeruginosa, every other week. Groups 2 and 3 were exposed to simulated air dives to 400 kPa (4 ata) with 45 min bottom time, every week for 7 weeks. Immediately after surfacing, the rats were anaesthetised and blood was collected from the saphenous vein. The amount of anti-HSP60 rat antibodies in the serum was analysed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The immunised rats (group 1) showed a significant increase in the level of autoantibodies against HSP60, whereas no autoantibodies were detected in the dived rats (group 2). The rats both immunised and dived (group 3) show no significant increase in circulating autoantibodies against HSP60. A possible explanation may be that HSP60 is expressed during diving and that cross-reacting antibodies are bound.

Abstract
Previous investigations have demonstrated that anti-inflammatory or lipid-lowering treatments could be useful for alleviating morbidity and mortality of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. However, whether a vaccine designed to target inflammation and lipid simultaneously is more powerful to control the process of atherosclerosis remain to be unknown. Here, a vaccine was designed to target heat shock protein-65(Hsp65) and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) simultaneously and the effects of nasal immunization of multi-target vaccine on high-cholesterol-diet-driven rabbit atherosclerosis lesions were evaluated. Sera, nasal lavages and lung washes were used to ELISA assay for the analysis of IgG and IgA against Hsp65 and CETP. Sera were also used to the analysis of the avidity of combination of anti-Hsp65 and anti-CETP IgG antibodies with corresponding antigen, cytokines IL-10 and IFN-γ, and lipoproteins. In addition, aortas were harvested for analysis of atherosclerotic lesions. The results showed that lower and lasting specific anti-Hsp65 IgG and high anti-CETP IgG in sera and protective anti-Hsp65 and anti-CETP IgA in nasal cavity and lung were induced, the avidity of combination of anti-Hsp65 and anti-CETP IgG with antigen were higher, and more protective IL-10 and less adverse IFN-γ were produced. In addition, sera TC, and LDL-C were decreased. As a result, the size of aorta atherosclerotic plaques was significantly reduced. We conclude that multifaceted vaccine combining lipid-regulating with anti-inflammation was a potential remedy, especially for atherosclerosis with complicated etiology.

Abstract
Available evidence on the effects of therapeutic plasmapheresis (TP) techniques and in particular lipid- and LDL-apheresis (LDL-a) on plasmatic inflammatory mediators including cytokines were reviewed. Studies on this issue are not numerous. However, the review of existing evidence clearly suggests an active role of apheresis on the profile of inflammatory molecules and on cytokine pattern in plasma. These non-lipid-lowering effects can be defined to some extent pleiotropic or pleiotropic-equivalent. Although further studies are desirable, the data reported in this review confirm that lipid- and LDL-a not only show acute lipid-lowering and cholesterol-lowering effects, but also efficacy in reducing several proinflammatory peptides, including cytokines. This effect was not related apparently to lipids and lipoproteins reduction. Thus, TP (lipid- and LDL-a), commonly utilized in the treatment of severe genetically determined lipid disorders, unresponsive to hypolipidemic drugs, offers new possibilities of interpretation of its role in the mechanisms leading to the blockade of atherosclerotic lesion development and progression. The ability of TP on short-term to induce such a profound change in the plasmatic metabolic and inflammatory profiles must be kept in mind in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, before and after interventions of coronary revascularization, and in the acute phase of cerebrovascular ischemia, at least in patients with severe dyslipidemia. Further studies are needed, in particular aimed at assessing if circulating cytokines may be downregulated by TP not only by direct removal, but through indirect effects on both gene translation and transcription perhaps via the cytokine receptor function.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a multi-factorial inflammatory disease and is the primary initiator of coronary artery and cerebrovascular disease. Initially believed to be exclusively lipid-driven, recent evidence demonstrates that inflammation is a significant driving force of the disease. Cellular components of innate immunity, for example monocytes and macrophages, play a predominant role in atherosclerosis. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the most characterised innate immune receptors and recent evidence demonstrates an important role in atherogenesis. Engagement of TLRs results in the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines, foam cell formation and activation of adaptive immunity. Recently they have also been implicated in protection from vascular disease. In this review, we detail the role of the innate immune system, specifically macrophages and TLR signalling, in atherosclerosis and acute cardiovascular complications, and thereby identify the potential of TLRs to act as therapeutic targets.

Abstract
We assessed the association between serum heat shock protein 27 (Hsp-27)concentrations in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and compared them with healthy participants. Patients with ACS (n = 75) were recruited and their biochemical parameters were compared with 75 healthy participants. Heat shock protein 27 concentrations were measured from blood samples taken on admission and 12 hours after the onset of chest pain. In the patient group, Hsp-27 concentrations (31.62 [20.12-38.51] ng/mL) in the first blood samples were significantly ( P < .001) higher than in control samples (20.12 [16.67-28.17] ng/mL). In patients, serum Hsp-27 levels on admission were significantly ( P < .001) higher than for the samples collected 12 hours after the onset of chest pain (25.87 [15.52-31.62]); the latter did not differ significantly from samples of healthy controls. In conclusion, serum Hsp-27 concentrations are elevated in the early hours following ACS, but fall to levels near to those in healthy individuals after about 12 hours from the onset of chest pain.

Abstract
Superantigens have been implicated in a number of diseases including Kawasaki disease (KD), a multi-system vasculitis resulting in coronary artery aneurysms. We have characterized a murine disease model in which coronary arteritis is induced by a novel superantigen found in Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE). Using this animal model of KD, we have identified three pathogenic steps leading to coronary artery aneurysm formation. These steps include T cell activation and proliferation, production of the proinflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), an elastolytic protease. In addition to their cholesterol-lowering effects, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG) coenzyme A (CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) have pleotropic immunomodulatory properties. Thus, we examined the effect of atorvastatin in modulating each of these three critical pathogenic processes leading to aneurysm formation in the disease model. Atorvastatin inhibited lymphocyte proliferation in response to superantigen stimulation in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibition was also observed for production of soluble mediators of inflammation including interleukin (IL)-2 and TNF-α. The inhibitory effect on proliferation was rescued completely by mevalonic acid, confirming that the mechanism responsible for this inhibitory activity on immune activation was inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase. Similarly, TNF-α-induced MMP-9 production was reduced in a dose-dependent manner in response to atorvastatin. Inhibition of extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation appears to be the mechanism responsible for inhibition of MMP-9 production. In conclusion, atorvastatin is able to inhibit critical steps known to be important in the development of coronary aneurysms, suggesting that statins may have therapeutic benefit in patients with KD.

Abstract
Heat shock proteins (Hsps) comprise several families of proteins expressed by a number of cell types following exposure to stressful environmental conditions that include heat, free radicals, toxins and ischemia, and are particularly involved in the recognition and renaturation of mis-folded proteins. Heat shock protein-27 (Hsp27) is a member of the small Hsp (sHsp) family with a molecular weight of approximately 27 KDa. In addition to its chaperoning functions, Hsp27 also appears to be involved in a diverse range of cellular functions, promoting cell survival through effects on the apoptotic pathway and plays important roles in cytoskeleton dynamics, cell differentiation and embryogenesis. Over the past two decades there has been an increasing interest in the relationship between Hsp27 and cardiovascular disease. Hsp27 is thought to exert an important role in the atherosclerotic process. Serum Hsp27 concentrations appear to be a biomarker of myocardial ischemia. In this review, we will focus on the possible protective and immuno-modulatory roles of Hsp27 in atherogenesis with special emphasis on their changes following acute coronary events and their potential as diagnostic and therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is the major cause of coronary artery disease (CAD), and oxidized LDL (oxLDL) is believed to play a key role in the initiation of the atherosclerotic process. Recent studies show that inflammation and autoimmune reactions are also relevant in atherosclerosis. In this study, we examined the association of antibodies against oxLDL (anti-oxLDL) with the severity of CAD in 558 Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) study samples (465 whites; 93 blacks) determined by coronary stenosis (< 20%, 20%-49%, > 50% stenosis). We also examined the relationship of anti-oxLDL with serum lipid levels and nine candidate genes including APOE, APOH, APOA5, LPL, LRP1, HL, CETP, PON1, and OLR1. IgM anti-oxLDL levels were significantly higher in the >20% stenosis group than in the ≥ 20% stenosis group in whites (0.69 ± 0.02 vs. 0.64 ± 0.01, respectively; P = 0.02). IgM anti-oxLDL levels correlated significantly with total cholesterol (r² = 0.01; P = 0.03) and LDL cholesterol (r² = 0.017; P = 0.004) in whites. Multiple regression analysis revealed a suggestive association of LPL/S447X single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) with both IgG anti-oxLDL (P = 0.02) and IgM anti-oxLDL (P = 0.07), as well as between IgM anti-oxLDL and the OLR1/3'UTR SNP (P = 0.020). Our data suggest that higher IgM anti-oxLDL levels may provide protection against coronary stenosis and that genetic variation in some candidate genes are determinants of anti-oxLDL levels.

Abstract
We assessed the changes in serum antiheat shock protein (HSP)-27 antibody and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels, following the placement of a drug-eluting stent (DES) or bare-metal stent (BMS) in patients with stable coronary artery disease. Either a BMS or DES was implanted in 137 patients (82 BMS; 55 DES). Anti-HSP27 and hsCRP levels were measured 24 hours before and 24 hours after stenting. Median hsCRP serum levels increased significantly to 60.78 (10.13-84.87) and 77.80 (50.00-84.84) mg/L for BMS and DES groups (P = .006 and P = .000, respectively); this increase did not differ significantly between the 2 groups. Median anti-HSP27 antibody levels decreased to 0.26 (0.17-0.49) and 0.21 (0.16-0.29) absorbency units in BMS and DES groups (P = .045 and P = < 0.001, respectively). The changes in anti-HSP27 antibody titers were significant between the 2 groups (P = .015). Bare-metal stent and DES differ in stimulation of immune rather than inflammatory responses. Less stent restenosis after DES compared with BMS implantation could, in part, be attributed to differences in immune responses.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is the leading pathological contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. As its complex pathogenesis has been gradually unwoven, the regime of treatments and therapies has increased with still much ground to cover. Active research in the past decade has attempted to develop antiatherosclerosis vaccines with some positive results. Nevertheless, it remains to develop a vaccine against atherosclerosis with high affinity, specificity, efficiency, and minimal undesirable pathology. In this review, we explore vaccine development against atherosclerosis by interpolating a number of novel findings in the fields of vascular biology, immunology, and bioinformatics. With recent technological breakthroughs, vaccine development affords precision in specifying the nature of the desired immune response—useful when addressing a disease as complex as atherosclerosis with a manifold of inflammatory and autoimmune components. Moreover, our exploration of available bioinformatic tools for epitope-based vaccine design provides a method to avoid expenditure of excess time or resources.

Abstract
We report a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed progressive emaciation and postprandial abdominal pain with a 27-year history of corticosteroid treatment. The patient was diagnosed as having intestinal angina based on computed tomography that showed severe stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in addition to complete occlusion of the celiac and inferior mesenteric arteries. Histopathology of the SMA and abdominal aorta showed atherosclerosis with no vasculitis or thrombus formation. Intestinal angina should actively be considered as a possible cause of recurrent abdominal pain in SLE patients, particularly in those with a long history of disease.

Abstract
In the vasculature, reactive oxidant species, including reactive oxygen, nitrogen, or halogenating species, and thiyl, tyrosyl, or protein radicals may oxidatively modify lipids and proteins with deleterious consequences for vascular function. These biologically active free radical and nonradical species may be produced by increased activation of oxidant-generating sources and/or decreased cellular antioxidant capacity. Once formed, these species may engage in reactions to yield more potent oxidants that promote transition of the homeostatic vascular phenotype to a pathobiological state that is permissive for atherothrombogenesis. This dysfunctional vasculature is characterized by lipid peroxidation and aberrant lipid deposition, inflammation, immune cell activation, platelet activation, thrombus formation, and disturbed hemodynamic flow. Each of these pathobiological states is associated with an increase in the vascular burden of free radical species-derived oxidation products and, thereby, implicates increased oxidant stress in the pathogenesis of atherothrombotic vascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis is a complex histopathologic process that is analogous to chronic inflammatory conditions. Several factors have been shown to correlate with the extent of atherosclerosis. Whereas hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, smoking, and family history are all well documented, recent literature points to additional associated factors. Thus, antibodies to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Chlamydia pneumonia, Helicobacter pylori, as well as homocysteine and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels have all been implicated as independent markers of accelerated atherosclerosis. HYPOTHESIS In the current study we attempted to formulate a system by which to predict the extent of coronary atherosclerosis as assessed by angiographic vessel occlusion. METHODS The 81 patients were categorized as having single-, double-, triple-, or no vessel involvement. The clinical data concerning the "classic" risk factors were obtained from clinical records, and sera were drawn from the patients for determination of the various parameters that are thought to be associated with atherosclerosis. RESULTS Using four artificial neural networks, we have found the most effective parameters predictive of coronary vessel involvement were (in decreasing order of importance) antibodies to oxLDL, to cardiolipin, to CMV, to Chlamydia pneumonia, and to beta 2-glycoprotein I (beta 2GPI). Although important in the prediction of vessel occlusion, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, CRP levels, and diabetes were less accurate. CONCLUSION The results of the current study, if reproduced in a larger population, may establish an integrated system based on the creation of artificial neural networks by which to predict the extent of atherosclerosis in a given subject fairly and noninvasively.

Abstract
Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Immune mechanisms have been recently proposed to play an important role in the development of atherosclerotic plaques in CHD. Heat shock proteins and oxidized low-density lipoprotein are proinflammatory substances that have been shown to have an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, and are now targets for clinical vaccine development. In addition, a vaccine has been developed to inhibit cholesteryl ester transfer protein. It is now recognized that many medications used to combat plaque development and rupture have significant anti-inflammatory effects and these effects are critical for drug efficacy. The influenza vaccine is associated with an atheroprotective effect. In addition, a nicotine vaccine, an antiangiotensin vaccine, and an anti-obesity vaccine may play a therapeutic role in modifying known risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis and its complications. This article reviews these vaccines as possible additions to the armamentarium of atheroprotective treatment modalities.
