Social media in the mentorship and networking of physicians: Important role for women in surgical specialties

The Representation of Women Moderators at The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting

BACKGROUND

Recently, there has been an increase in the representation of women within the cardiothoracic surgery workforce, with discussions about gender equity garnering interest. We sought to identify whether this increase is accompanied by commensurate selection for representation at national meetings.

METHODS

Online archives of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Annual Meetings were reviewed from 2015 to 2024. Data regarding the moderator's gender were abstracted. The gender distribution of moderators across the various session categories was surveyed, and subgroup analyses were performed.

RESULTS

During the years of study, the STS Annual Meeting Taskforce selected 983 moderators to participate in the conference, including 218 women. The representation of women moderators demonstrated a favorable, upward trend. In 2015, 12.1% of moderators were women, with a consistent rate from 2015 to 2018. There was a noticeable rise in invited women moderators in 2019, with 25.4% of moderators being women. This proportion increased to 36.9% women in 2024. General Thoracic sessions have consistently included a greater percentage of women moderators compared with other sessions. Other topic areas, such as Education and Quality Improvement and Critical Care, transitioned to greater representation of women in recent years.

CONCLUSIONS

There has been an increase over time in women moderators selected for participation in the STS Annual Meeting, with progress in gender diversity seen in most session types. Although the overall proportion of women within cardiothoracic surgery remains low, the STS has increasingly worked toward encouraging inclusivity. Efforts to further support well-rounded representation are of important benefit.

Trends in Twitter Utilization Among Academic Otolaryngologists

OBJECTIVE

To characterize Twitter utilization among academic otolaryngologists and evaluate the relationship between Twitter utilization and research productivity.

METHODS

Data were collected manually from accredited US otolaryngology residency programs from July-November 2021. Program and faculty demographics were documented, including citations and H-index for faculty and Doximity reputation and US News and World Report ranking for programs. Twitter metrics were also recorded. Descriptive analyses and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of Twitter utilization.

RESULTS

Currently, 333 (16%) faculty and 70 (62%) programs have a Twitter account. Of these, 36 (11%) and 27 (39%), respectively, were created in 2020. The regression model indicates that for each 5 unit increase in H-index, the odds of having a Twitter account increase 22% (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.10-1.34, p = 0.0009). The number of faculty with a Twitter account predicts the existence of program Twitter accounts (OR:1.49, 95% CI 1.01-2.19, p = 0.04). Finally, of the 323 faculty with a Twitter account and available Scopus profile, we found that the number of individuals with Twitter use out of proportion to their academic productivity was low (n = 8/323).

CONCLUSION

The H-index is a significant predictor of faculty Twitter accounts, whereas the number of faculty with Twitter is a significant predictor of program Twitter utilization. Although Twitter utilization is increasing, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, the findings indicate that there is ample room for growth, particularly amongst faculty with strong academic portfolios.

LinkedIn Usage Trends Among Surgeons at a Large Academic Institute

INTRODUCTION

Social networking platforms have evolved into a self-promotional space. The LinkedIn platform allows users to share knowledge, research accomplishments, and network in an academic setting. Our objective was to determine LinkedIn usage trends among surgeons at a large academic institution.

METHODS

A list of surgeons within the department of surgery at a large academic institute was compiled. All publicly available profiles were analyzed for their LinkedIn activity and followership. Active accounts were defined as users who have posted or interacted with any posts within the last year. Comparisons of LinkedIn usage grouped by gender, surgery division, and rank were analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 133 surgeons were included. Among these surgeons, 88 had a LinkedIn profile (66.2%); however, only 43 surgeons had active usage on this platform (32.3%). The median number of followers among surgeons with a profile was 110 (IQR [24-427]). Male surgeons had a higher median of followers (167 IQR [38-502]) compared to female (54 IQR [21-209]). A greater percentage of male surgeons had a profile compared to female surgeons (68.5% M versus 61.0% F, P = 0.12). The transplant surgery division had the highest percentage of LinkedIn accounts (90.9%) followed by surgical oncology (87.5%). However, active usage was led by the pediatric surgery division (80.0%), followed by the plastic surgery division (71.4%). Instructors, assistant professors, associate professors, and professors all had LinkedIn accounts; however, instructors were the least active users with 33.3% being active on their LinkedIn. The lowest percentage of those with LinkedIn accounts were instructors (50%). Professors were found to be the most active users at 57.1%.

CONCLUSIONS

Social media use is on the rise in academic surgery. Within a department of surgery at a large academic institution, only 32.3% were active users of LinkedIn, suggesting that there is room for improvement in utilizing this resource as a tool for mentorship, professional development, and networking.

Representation of Women Authorship in the Top 5 Transplantation Journals in the United States

BACKGROUND

In the United States, only 13% of transplant surgeons are women. We evaluated gender distribution and trends of American authorship over the past 10 y in high-impact solid organ transplantation journals to gain insight into the current status of women authorship in transplantation.

METHODS

Original articles from 2012 to 2021 from the 5 highest-impact solid organ transplantation journals were extracted from Scopus. First and last author's gender was predicted using Genderize.io. Data of first and last authors, article type and topic, location, citation, and funding metrics were analyzed. Chi-square, logistic regression, and trend tests were performed where appropriate. Statistical significance was set at <0.05.

RESULTS

Women's first and last authorship increased over time among all journals. There was an increase in women first authors in the American Journal of Transplantation and in senior women authors in Liver Transplantation and Transplantation . Significant differences in gender authorship in lung, intestine, pancreas, general, and islet cell transplantation were found. Women's last authorship was associated with 1.69 higher odds of having a woman first author when adjusting for year and journal. There was an increase in the rate of women's first and last author collaborations over the years. Women last authors had 1.5 higher odds of being funded by the National Institutes of Health over the years.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite an increase in women transplant surgeons and physicians, the gap in women authorship in transplantation persists. Women's last authorship was associated with higher odds of having a woman first author, pointing to the importance of mentorship for women joining the transplant academia.

Authorship Trends and Disparities in Cardiothoracic Surgery

BACKGROUND

Previous investigations have revealed significant gender disparities in the academic arenas of cardiothoracic surgery. However, the status of gender representation in cardiothoracic publications has not been well described. This study aimed to evaluate authorship trends by gender in two high-impact cardiothoracic surgical journals.

METHODS

In this bibliometric analysis, PubMed was searched for articles published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery from 2010 to 2021. The web-based application Genderize.io was used to classify names of first and last authors as men vs women. The Cochran-Armitage trend test and multivariable logistic regression were used to evaluate authorship per year and the association of first and last author gender, respectively.

RESULTS

Among 14,443 articles, 16.7% had women first authors and 8.1% had women last authors. The proportion of articles written by women authors increased, rising from 12.6% to 21.1% (P < .0001) for first and 5.4% to 11.5% (P < .0001) for last authors. Papers written with women as first author were associated with 2.0 higher odds of having a woman as last author (95% CI, 1.7-2.3; P < .0001). The mean number of last author publications was higher for men than for women (2.4 vs 1.7, P < .0001).

CONCLUSIONS

Over the past decade, despite a welcomed increase in women authorship in high-impact journals in cardiothoracic surgery, women represent a small proportion of published authors. Women first authors are more likely to publish with women last authors, demonstrating the impact of same-gender collaborations while emphasizing a need for cross-gender mentorship.

Evaluating Diversity Promotion on Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Program Websites and Instagram Accounts

BACKGROUND

Medical students applying to residency, including those from underrepresented groups, strongly value cultural fit and program diversity. Program websites and social media are thus an influential information source for prospective applicants and recruitment tool for residencies. We evaluated whether and how integrated plastic surgery residency program websites and social media display commitments to diversity online.

METHODS

We evaluated program websites for 8 predetermined diversity elements, (1) nondiscrimination and (2) diversity statements, (3) community resources, (4) faculty and (5) resident biographies, (6) faculty and (7) resident photographs, and (8) resident resources, and assessed Instagram accounts for diversity-related images, captions, and hashtags. Our analysis used Mann-Whitney U , chi-squared, and t tests; significance level was P < 0.05.

RESULTS

We reviewed 82 program websites with a mean of 3.4 ± 1.4 diversity elements. Resident (n = 76, 92.7%) and faculty photographs (n = 65, 79.3%) and resident biographies (n = 43, 52.4%) were the most common. Seventy programs (85.4%) had Instagram accounts, the majority of which (n = 41, 58.6%) shared content related to diversity in race, ethnicity, gender, and/or sexual orientation. Programs located in smaller cities were more likely to have ≥4 website diversity elements ( P = 0.014) and mention diversity on Instagram ( P = 0.0037). Programs with women chairs/chiefs were more likely to mention diversity on Instagram ( P = 0.007).

CONCLUSIONS

In the age of virtual recruitment, program websites and social media should provide sufficient information, described in our diversity element checklist, to help prospective applicants determine fit from a diversity perspective. Residents, who often contribute to program social media, and women chairs/chiefs may be critical to driving diversity promotion.

Role Modeling in Medical Education: A Twenty-First Century Learner's Perspective

Traditional role modeling is a complex process of observation and emulation delivered by experienced senior physicians with an unknown outcome. Role modeling through organized modalities has been utilized as an educational tool in medical school for years. However, effects of parenting, near peers, gender, race, and social media on role modeling in medical education have not been well characterized yet play a significant role in the development of modern clinicians. The aim of this paper is to encourage students as future medical and clinical educators through an in-depth analysis of role modeling, with the goal of improving their "role modeling consciousness."

Perception and Usage of Social Media Among Women in Orthopaedics

INTRODUCTION

The use of social media for marketing, education, and networking has increased among orthopaedic surgeons. Social media has played an important role in supporting women physicians and trainees, by allowing connections to be made across stages of training and geographic borders. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of female orthopaedic surgeons, fellows, residents, and medical students regarding their usage of social media.

METHODS

A 22-question anonymous survey regarding the perceptions of social media usage was distributed to 1,189 female members of Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society via e-mail in July 2022. Data collection lasted a total of 4 weeks, from July to August 2022. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

A total of 207 responses were received (17% response rate). The respondents comprised 90 orthopaedic surgeons (43%), 60 medical students (29%), 49 residents (24%), and eight fellows (4%). Ninety one percent of participants (189 of 207) reported having a social media account, with 23% (43 of 189) having separate 'personal' and 'professional' accounts. Less than half of all participants reported altering (51 of 189; 27%) or deleting (20 of 189; 11%) profiles for interviews. Fifty three percent of participants (109 of 207) 'agreed' that social media is a good way to network. Twenty eight percent of participants (58 of 207) feared gaining attention to their profile when engaging with professional accounts. Forty percent of participants (62 of 207) agreed that personal life events on social media can be considered unprofessional and should be kept on a private profile.

CONCLUSION

Social media can be used to network professionally within orthopaedic surgery, connecting women at different levels of training. Although concerns about professionalism of social media accounts exist, this may be mitigated by maintaining a separate private account from a public, professional profile. Future guidelines regarding social media usage and how to maintain professionalism while being active on social media may be beneficial.

Social Media: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The use of social media platforms in a professional capacity has grown and presents unique opportunities for women surgeons. Women surgeons face unique obstacles and challenges compared with their male counterparts. Social media has helped women surgeons create an online community and has provided opportunities for mentorship and professional advancement. In addition, it has helped break down traditional constructs of what it means to be a surgeon and allowed the medical community and public to view images of a modern surgeon. Social media has played an important role in continually increasing efforts to diversify the field of surgery and break down traditional stereotypes associated with surgeons. However, there are some downsides of social media that women surgeons need to be aware of, particularly, the risk of harassment, criticism, and potentially harmful online reviews.

Projected timeline to achieve gender balance within the United States neurosurgical workforce exceeds 150 years: a National Plan and Provider Enumeration System analysis

OBJECTIVE

Despite incremental progress in the representation and proportion of women in the field of neurosurgery, female neurosurgeons still represent an overwhelming minority of the current US physician workforce. Prior research has predicted the timeline by which the proportion of female neurosurgery residents may reach that of males, but none have used the contemporary data involving the entire US neurosurgical workforce.

METHODS

The authors performed a retrospective analysis of the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) registry of all US neurosurgeons to determine changes in the proportions of women in neurosurgery across states, census divisions, and census regions between 2010 and 2020. A univariate linear regression was performed to assess historical growth, and then Holt-Winter forecasting was used to predict in what future year gender parity may be reached in this field.

RESULTS

A majority of states, divisions, and regions have increased the proportion of female neurosurgeons from 2010. Given current growth rates, the authors found that female neurosurgeons will not reach the proportion of women in the overall medical workforce until 2177 (95% CI 2169-2186). Furthermore, they found that women in neurosurgery will not match their current proportion of the overall US population until 2267 (95% CI 2256-2279).

CONCLUSIONS

Whereas many studies have focused on the overall increase of women in neurosurgery in the last decade, this one is the first to compare this growth in the context of the overall female physician workforce and the female US population. The results suggest a longer timeline for gender parity in neurosurgery than previous studies have suggested and should further catalyze the targeted recruitment of women into the field, an overhaul of current policies in place to support and develop the careers of women in neurosurgery, and increased self-reflection and behavioral change from the entire neurosurgery community.

Twitter as a Medical Media Among French Young Oncologists: Results from a National Survey

Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has become a commonly used platform for sharing medical information, especially in the field of oncology. However, its role and impact on young oncologists' education remain unclear. Moreover, COVID-19 and congress virtualization is likely to have modified Twitter use by the medical society.We conducted a national survey (27 questions) in France among medical oncology, hematology, and radiation therapy young doctors to help better understand the role played by Twitter on their medical education. One hundred eighty-three young oncologists participated in our survey. A majority does not use Twitter (72.1%), mostly to reduce their time spent on social media. Participants using Twitter (27.9%) often use it more than once a week, mostly by scrolling on their news feed. Interestingly, they rarely express their own opinion on Twitter: a majority of them (75.5%) tweet less than once a month while the rest of them mostly retweet others' tweets. They mainly follow English-speaking experts, scientific societies, and medical journals. Pharmaceutical laboratories' accounts are of less significance. Overall Twitter usage seems increasing since COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent digitalization of congresses. No statistical difference was observed between the baseline characteristics of Twitter users and non-users.This survey shows that Twitter is a relevant mean of continuous medical education used by around a third of French young oncologists, especially since COVID-19 pandemic and the virtualization of congresses. This media should be considered and evaluated for its educational advantages or potential biases.

Correlations Between Department and Training Program Online Presence and Women in Orthopedic Surgery Training

Background

Orthopedic residency programs increasingly use websites and social media to reach students. This accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as away rotations became limited. Women remain a minority of orthopedic residents, and there are no data that indicate the correlation between department/program website content or social media presence on the gender diversity of residency classes.

Methods

Orthopedic department websites were assessed between June 2021 and January 2022 to identify program director's gender, as well as the gender composition of the faculty and residents. Instagram presence for the department and/or program was also identified.

Results

There was no correlation found between the residency program director's gender and the gender diversity of residents in a given program. The percentage of women faculty identified on a department website was significantly correlated with the percentage of women residents in the program, regardless of the program director's gender. While there was an increase in the percentage of women residents among programs with Instagram accounts for the class that started in 2021, this was negated when the percentage of women faculty was taken into account.

Conclusion

Efforts on multiple fronts will be needed to increase the number and percentage of women applying for and training in orthopedic surgery. Given the increasing use of digital media, we need a better understanding of what information, including faculty gender diversity, can be conveyed through this format that is useful for women medical students interested in orthopedic surgery to address their concerns about the field.

Frequency and Characteristics of Social Media Use among General Surgery Trainees

INTRODUCTION

With increased social isolation due to COVID-19, social media has been increasingly adopted for communication, education, and entertainment. We sought to understand the frequency and characteristics of social media usage among general surgery trainees.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

General surgery trainees in 15 American training programs were invited to participate in an anonymous electronic survey. The survey included questions about demographics, frequency of social media usage, and perceptions of risks and benefits of social media. Univariate analysis was performed to identify differences between high users of social media (4-7 h per week on at least one platform) and low users (0-3 h or less on all platforms).

RESULTS

One hundred fifty-seven of 591 (26.6%) trainees completed the survey. Most respondents were PGY3 or lower (75%) and high users of social media (74.5%). Among high users, the most popular platforms were Instagram (85.7%), YouTube (85.1%), and Facebook (83.6%). YouTube and Twitter were popular for surgical education (77.3% and 68.2%, respectively). The most reported benefits of social media were improving patient education and professional networking (85.0%), where high users agreed more strongly about these benefits (P = 0.002). The most reported risks were seeing other residents (42%) or attendings (17%) with unprofessional behavior. High users disagreed more strongly about risks, including observing attendings with unprofessional behavior (P = 0.028).

CONCLUSIONS

Most respondents were high users of social media, particularly Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. High users incorporated social media into their surgical education while perceiving more benefits and fewer risks of social media.

The Impact of Same Gender Speed-Mentoring on Women's Perceptions of a Career in Surgery - A Prospective Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

Mentoring is critically important for the personal and professional development of a surgeon. Early career stage mentoring by same-gender role models may help ameliorate the gender imbalance in surgery based on our understanding of barriers for women pursuing surgical careers. A novel method of establishing these relationships is speed mentoring. This study aims to examine the impact of a one-day speed-mentoring session with same gender mentors on a cohort's perceptions of a career in surgery.

DESIGN

This prospective pre-post study compared attitudes and perceptions of a career in surgery before and after a speed-mentoring session with female surgeons. Mentees were assigned into groups of 1 or 2 and were paired with a female surgeon for 8 minutes. Each mentee group then rotated to another mentor for the same amount of time and this process continued for a total of twelve sessions. Mentees completed a 19-point questionnaire before and after the speed mentoring intervention.

SETTING

This multicenter study included participants from across the United Kingdom.

PARTICIPANTS

Inclusion criteria were female gender and medical student or foundation year doctor (internship year 1 or 2) status. Three hundred and forty participants participated in the intervention, 191 were included in the analysis.

RESULTS

Following intervention, the percentage of participants who agreed that having a family would negatively impact a woman's surgical career progression significantly decreased from 46.6% to 23.0%. The percentage of participants who agreed that an "old boys' club" attitude exists in surgery also significantly decreased (73.8%-58.1%). The percentage of participants who agreed it was more difficult for a woman to succeed in her surgical career than a man significantly decreased (73.8%-64.9%). One hundred and eighty-three (96%) participants agreed that mentorship is important for career progression and 153 (71.2%) participants stated that they did not have someone who they considered a mentor.

CONCLUSIONS

Conducting a speed mentoring program with same-gender role models significantly changed female medical students' and junior doctors' perceptions of women in surgery. The results suggest that such programs may be effective tools for facilitating mentor-mentee relationships and could be employed by surgical organizations to encourage a diverse uptake into surgery.

Early Barriers to Career Progression of Women in Surgery and Solutions to Improve Them: A Systematic Scoping Review

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to summarize the evidence concerning the barriers that exist to the career progression of women in surgery and to provide potential solutions to overcome these obstacles.

BACKGROUND

Visible and invisible impediments can hinder female doctors' pursuit of a surgical career, from choosing a surgical specialty to training opportunities and all the way through career progression.

METHODS

Database search of original studies about barriers for female surgeons during choice of surgical career, residency, and career progression. A query including possible solutions such as mentorship and network was included.

RESULTS

Of 4618 total articles; 4497 were excluded as duplicates, having incorrect study focus, or not being original studies; leaving 120 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Of the articles included, 22 (18%) focused on factors affecting the pursuit of a surgical career, such as surgical work hours and limited time for outside interests, 55 (46%) analyzed the main barriers that exist during surgical residency and fellowship training, such as discrimination and sexual harassment, 27 (23%) focused on barriers to career advancement, heavy workloads, ineffective mentorship, unclear expectations for advancement, inequality in pay or work-home conflicts. Among studies reporting on possible solutions, 8 (6.5%) articles reported on the role of effective mentorship to support career advancement and to provide moral support and 8 (6.5%) on the emerging role of social media for networking. Our analysis showed how different impediments hinder surgical career progression for women, with notable consequences on burnout and attrition.

CONCLUSIONS

Identification and recognition of obstacles to career progression is the first step to addressing the gender gap in surgery. Active strategies should be improved to promote a culture of diversity and to create equal opportunity for women in surgery, while implementing structured mentoring programs and investing on an adequate communication on social media to engage the future generations.

Navigating Personal and Professional Development Through Social Media in Ophthalmology

Background

Although social media use among physicians skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, its role for networking, mentorship, and support among ophthalmologists remains unknown. The objective of this study was to elucidate how ophthalmologists use social media for navigating challenges related to personal and professional development.

Methods

This was a cross-sectional survey study conducted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. A 40-item questionnaire investigating the usage of social media was developed and distributed to active social media users in ophthalmology including trainees and practitioners from November 2020 to December 2020 via social media channels. Quantitative responses were analyzed using descriptive and basic statistics, while a thematic analysis was conducted to examine the qualitative responses.

Results

One hundred and forty-nine respondents (67% women) completed the survey, with 56% of participants between the ages of 25–35 years old. Women were more likely to report experiencing workplace discrimination (p < 0.005) and work-life imbalance (p < 0.05) compared to men, and social media was found to be useful in addressing those challenges in addition to parenting and mentorship (p < 0.005 and p < 0.001, respectively). Compared to their older counterparts, younger ophthalmologists (<45 years old) cited more challenges with practice management (p < 0.005) and turned to social media for corresponding guidance (p < 0.05). Compared to late career ophthalmologists, trainees were more likely to report difficulties with career development (p < 0.05), practice management (p < 0.0001), and financial planning (p < 0.05), and found social media beneficial for learning financial literacy (p < 0.05). A qualitative analysis of the free-response texts found both positive and negative viewpoints of social media use in ophthalmology.

Conclusion

Social media is an invaluable tool for enhancing professional and personal growth for ophthalmologists, particularly for women, trainees, and younger surgeons through education and community-building. Future directions include exploring how social media can be used to improve mentorship, outreach, and training in ophthalmology.

Innovative Social Media Summit: Providing a Path for Physicians on Social Media

PROBLEM

Physicians' voices are valued in society and should be present in mainstream social media where they can provide valuable public health messaging and patient education as well as increase opportunities for medical education, mentoring, and collaboration. However, lack of formal education on effective use of social media prevents many physicians from using it.

APPROACH

The authors developed a physician-led social media training program to address the need for formal instruction on social media use. The program was presented to medical students, trainees, and faculty at an academic medical institution in August and September 2020. The virtual format included 5 hour-long sessions with presentations by peer experts in social media. Peer physicians with experience using social media presented on a range of topics, including introductions to platforms, how to reach and grow audiences, and use of social media to advance patient education, medical education, and advocacy.

OUTCOMES

There were 425 cumulative registrations for the 5 sessions of the Social Media Summit. The number of registrants increased for each session, suggesting that interest increased over time. Qualitative and quantitative participant feedback was collected via a brief, voluntary survey. All of the participants who completed the survey (n = 24) reported they were "very satisfied" (58.3%) or "somewhat satisfied" (41.7%) with the Summit.

NEXT STEPS

Physician involvement in social media presents opportunities for public health knowledge, medical education, scientific collaboration, and career advancement. Physicians who have been successful in using social media for these purposes are excellent peer educators and can fill the medical education void in social media training. Future plans include building sustainability of the program, collecting additional quantitative and qualitative feedback to guide improvement, and encouraging reproducibility.

An Analysis of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program Directors in the United States

Purpose This study aims to examine the demographic features, academic backgrounds, and scholarly achievements of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery (OPRS) fellowship program directors (PDs) in the United States. Methods In this cross-sectional analysis, publicly accessible sources were accessed in March 2022 to collate the demographic and academic profiles of PDs of American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS)-accredited OPRS fellowships. Differences by gender and program rank were assessed using the Mann-Whitney Utest. Results Fifty-four PDs were identified, the majority of whom were males (88.89% (n = 48)). The average age was 58.48 years. Of the PDs, 96.3% (n = 53) obtained a medical degree, and all completed residency training in the United States. In addition, 9.26% (n = 5) had another degree, either a Doctor of Philosophy (n = 3) or master's degree (n = 2). A substantial proportion of individuals completed medical school (20.37% (n = 11)), residency (20.37% (n = 11)), or fellowship (31.48% (n = 17)) at an institution affiliated with the program where they were PDs. The most common additional fellowship obtained was neuro-ophthalmology (16.67% (n = 9)). The average h-index was 19.30 (range, 0-60), average five-year h-index was 4.85 (range, 0-36), and average m-quotient was 0.63 (range, 0-2.22). A significant difference in the median five-year h-index was observed between females and males (7 (range, 3-36) versus 4 (range, 0-10); p= 0.038). Conclusions This analysis indicated that OPRS PDs in the United States were principally males with extensive scholarly productivity. As women remain underrepresented in OPRS, increased gender parity at this leadership position should be encouraged in order to expand the recruitment of women into the field.

#SoMe the Money! Value, Strategy, and Implementation of Social Media Engagement for Infectious Diseases Trainees, Clinicians, and Divisions

Social media platforms have revolutionized how we consume information, along with how to effectively present communication, education, and advocacy efforts. There is profound value in leveraging social media within these aspects for the field of infectious diseases, for divisions and individual clinicians. Herein, we provide the rationale to incorporate social media as a key competency for infectious diseases training and specific guidance on aspects of education and strategic development of new accounts critical for success.

Social Media: Flattening Hierarchies for Women and Black, Indigenous, People Of Color (BIPOC) to Enter the Room Where It Happens

Social media platforms are widely used to connect people across multiple settings, including country of origin, profession, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, seniority, and training. Groups that have been marginalized or historically excluded from decision-making encounters may lack formal mentors/sponsors because of a lack of representation of women and Black, Indigenous, People Of Color (BIPOC) in senior leadership positions. This can serve as a barrier to professional advancement at all stages of career development. Identifying and connecting with these potential mentors/sponsors outside of one's institutional space can be challenging. For this reason, leveraging social media to develop these professional relationships through flattened hierarchies can allow for professional networking beyond traditional mechanisms. Here we aim to describe how individuals can connect through social media to advance their careers and scientific and clinical expertise, advocate for communities, and provide high-quality communication to the public.

Factors Affecting Physicians' Credibility on Twitter When Sharing Health Information: Online Experimental Study

Background

Largely absent from research on how users appraise the credibility of professionals as sources for the information they find on social media is work investigating factors shaping credibility within a specific profession, such as physicians.

Objective

We address debates about how physicians can show their credibility on social media depending on whether they employ a formal or casual appearance in their profile picture. Using prominence-interpretation theory, we posit that formal appearance will affect perceived credibility based on users' social context-specifically, whether they have a regular health care provider.

Methods

For this experiment, we recruited 205 social media users using Amazon Mechanical Turk. We asked participants if they had a regular health care provider and then randomly assigned them to read 1 of 3 Twitter posts that varied only in the profile picture of the physician offering health advice. Next, we tasked participants with assessing the credibility of the physician and their likelihood of engaging with the tweet and the physician on Twitter. We used path analysis to assess whether participants having a regular health care provider impacted how the profile picture affected their ratings of the physician's credibility and their likelihood to engage with the tweet and physician on Twitter.

Results

We found that the profile picture of a physician posting health advice in either formal or casual attire did not elicit significant differences in credibility, with ratings comparable to those having no profile image. Among participants assigned the formal appearance condition, those with a regular provider rated the physician higher on a credibility than those without, which led to stronger intentions to engage with the tweet and physician.

Conclusions

The findings add to existing research by showing how the social context of information seeking on social media shapes the credibility of a given professional. Practical implications for professionals engaging with the public on social media and combating false information include moving past debates about casual versus formal appearances and toward identifying ways to segment audiences based on factors like their backgrounds (eg, experiences with health care providers).

Social Disparities in the Thoracic Surgery Workforce

Diversity fosters innovation, advances the work environment, and enriches patient care. Despite that, only 17%, 5%, and 3% of cardiothoracic (CT) surgeons in academia were women, Hispanic, and Black, respectively. Diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and deliberate initiatives are necessary to eradicate disparities in the CT workforce. Leading organizational changes from the top down is paramount and above all else, changes and improvements should be based on a meritocracy.

Assessing Brazilian Medical Student Awareness About Global Surgery: A Survey-Based Study

BACKGROUND

Global surgery is an interdisciplinary field that advocates for access to equitable, affordable surgical services for all people. Engaging medical students in the field can strengthen the surgical workforce in low- and middle-income countries. We aim to investigate Brazilian medical students' acknowledgment of global surgery and their preferred learning platforms.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional study through an anonymous Portuguese survey on Google Forms, consisting of 30 mixed multiple-choice and five-point Likert scale questions. Students enrolled in a Brazilian medical school from the second to sixth academic year fulfilled inclusion criteria. The association between qualitative variables was assessed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, or binary logistic model.

RESULTS

We received 1,345 responses from 208 medical schools. Only 20.9% (282/1,345) of participants reported awareness of global surgery, who were predominantly female. 96.5% (1,298/1,345) declared interest in knowing more about global surgery and participants indicated social media (71.6%, 202/282) as the prevalent manner to gain awareness on it, followed by webinars (63.5%, 179/282). Extracurricular classes were the most preferable option among students (61.4%, 827/1,345) to get acquainted with the field, followed by internships (59.4%, 812/1,345), workshops (57%, 767/1,345), and social media (53.4%, 730/1,345). The main obstacles to pursue a global surgery career were lack of national opportunities (32%, 431/1,345) and adequate training (25.4%, 341/1,345).

CONCLUSION

We outlined the most strategic pathways to raising awareness on global surgery among Brazilian medical students, providing relevant insights on its education in similar settings.

Perceptions of Gender Disparities Among Women in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

OBJECTIVE

In this study of women in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, the authors aimed to characterize demographics, roles in leadership, and perceived professional challenges.

DESIGN

A prospective cross-sectional survey of female cardiothoracic anesthesiologists in the United States.

SETTING

An internet-based survey of 43 questions was sent to women in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. The survey included questions on demographics, leadership, and perceptions of professional challenges including career advancement, compensation, promotion, harassment, and intimidation.

PARTICIPANTS

A database of women in cardiothoracic anesthesiology was created via personal contacts and snowball sampling.

INTERVENTIONS

None.

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS

A total of 153 responses were analyzed, for a response rate of 65.1%. Most respondents were at the Clinical Instructor or Assistant Professor rank. Many women perceived that compensation, promotion, authorship, and career advancement were affected by gender. Furthermore, 67% of respondents identified having children as having a negative impact on career advancement. Many women reported experiencing derogatory comments (55.6%), intimidation (57.8%), microaggression (69.6%), sexual harassment (25.2%), verbal harassment (45.2%), and unwanted physical or sexual advances (24.4%). These behaviors were most often from a surgical attending, anesthesia attending, or patient.

CONCLUSION

This survey study of women in cardiothoracic anesthesiology found that many women perceived inequities in financial compensation, authorship opportunities, and promotion; in addition, many felt that their career advancement was impacted negatively by having children. A striking finding was that the majority of women have experienced intimidation, derogatory comments, and microaggressions in the workplace.

General Surgery Going Viral: Current Trends in Social Media Utilization by General Surgery Residency Programs

OBJECTIVE

This study examined the current and changing trends in utilization of social media platforms by general surgery residency programs.

DESIGN

US general surgery residency programs were identified. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter were surveyed for active accounts specific to an institution's general surgery residency program. Metrics for these accounts included: Date of first post/date of account creation, total number of posts, number of followers, number of posts categorized per year for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Active accounts were categorized into university based, university affiliated, or independent programs. Number of followers and the number of posts were compared among those categories. Data collection took place from 7/21/2021 - 8/2/2021.

RESULTS

295 social media accounts were identified. 55% of all programs have at least one social media account. Instagram (47.8%) and Twitter (36.3%) make up the majority of the social media accounts. The majority of all social media accounts (51.2%) were created in 2020. Instagram saw the largest increase in activity in 2020 with posting increasing by 403.7% compared to 2019. Twitter accounts had the highest amount of posts in 2020 (9940). Instagram accounts have the highest follower base (113,499). Facebook also saw increased posting in 2020 but its overall account creation has remained stagnant. University based program accounts have higher on average followers and posts when compared to independent program accounts.

CONCLUSION

Social media accounts specific to general surgery residency programs have grown steadily in the past few years, with a dramatic rise of account creation and activity in 2020. Instagram and Twitter serve as the dominant platforms for new account creation and activity. University based programs attract more followers than independent programs on Instagram and Twitter.

Overcoming the Impact of COVID-19 on Surgical Mentorship: A Scoping Review of Long-distance Mentorship in Surgery

BACKGROUND

Mentorship in the surgical field has been increasingly recognized as a crucial component of career success. Distance mentorship models may be utilized to overcome geographic limitations, increase mentorship access, and strengthen mentoring relationships in surgery.

OBJECTIVE

This review aimed to identify the scope of literature on distance mentoring in surgery, the range of its application, its effectiveness, and any gaps in the literature that should be addressed in order to enhance mentorship in the surgical field.

DESIGN

A comprehensive PubMed review was performed in January 2021 on distance mentorship of students, trainees, and surgeons in the surgical field. Reviews, replies, and non-English articles were excluded. Data was extracted regarding publication year, author's country, specialty, subjects, aim of mentorship model, and efficacy.

RESULTS

134 total studies met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most studies were published in 2020, written by authors in the United States, from general surgery, and featured an expert surgeon paired with a more junior fully trained surgeon. In all, 93.3% of studies utilized distance mentorship to enhance surgical skill through telementoring and only 4.5% were focused on mentorship to enhance careers through professional development. The remaining studies utilized distance mentorship models to increase surgical research (0.7%) and clinical knowledge (1.5%).

CONCLUSION

The results of this review suggest successful implementation of distance mentoring in surgery through telementoring, but a lack of professionally aimed distance mentorship programs. Amidst COVID-19, distance mentorship is particularly important because of decreased face-to-face opportunity. Future studies in the surgical field should investigate distance mentoring as a means of increasing mentorship for professional development.

Women in Leadership and Their Influence on the Gender Diversity of Academic Plastic Surgery Programs

BACKGROUND

Women seldom reach the highest leadership positions in academic plastic surgery. Contributing factors include lack of female role models/mentors and lack of gender diversity. Studies show that female role models and mentors are critical for recruiting and retaining female surgeons and that gender diversity within organizations more strongly influences women's career choices. The authors therefore sought to determine the current gender diversity of academic plastic surgery programs and investigate influences of gender and leadership on program gender composition.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study of U.S. plastic surgery residency programs was performed in December of 2018. Genders of the leadership were collected, including medical school dean, department of surgery chair, department/division of plastic surgery chair/chief, plastic surgery program director, plastic surgery faculty, and plastic surgery residents. Gender relationships among these groups were analyzed.

RESULTS

Ninety-nine residency programs were identified (79 integrated with or without independent and 20 independent). Women represented a smaller proportion of academic plastic surgeons in more senior positions (38 percent residents, 20 percent faculty, 13 percent program directors, and 8 percent chairs). Plastic surgery chair gender was significantly correlated with program director gender, and plastic surgery faculty gender was significantly associated with plastic surgery resident gender. Although not statistically significant, female plastic surgery chair gender was associated with a 45 percent relative increase in female plastic surgery residents.

CONCLUSIONS

Women in leadership and gender diversity influence the composition of academic plastic surgery programs. Gender disparity exists at all levels, worsening up the academic ladder. Recruitment, retention, and promotion of women is critical, as such diversity is required for continued progress in innovation and problem-solving within plastic surgery.

A New Decade for Diversity: Trends in Representation of Women at the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons

BACKGROUND

In 2018, the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons first Women in Plastic Surgery was established, reflecting the national trend to address the gender gap between men and women in surgery. Conferences, such as the annual NESPS, are important opportunities to increase visibility of female role models and resources to address deterrents to surgical careers. We thus sought to examine the participation and visibility of women in the NESPS over the last decade.

METHODS

Abstracts and programs from the NESPS regional conferences between 2013 and 2019 were accessed via the publicly available past meetings archives, and registration lists were provided by the NESPS. Registrants, panelists, speakers, moderators, and first author and senior author listed for each poster presentation, podium presentation was listed, sex was determined (male or female), and sex were aggregated by category of participation. Significance was set at a P value of less than 0.05.

RESULTS

Registration of women for the NESPS annual conferences was constant for 5 years (2013-2017), followed by an increase in female registrants from 27.1% in 2017 to 42.3% in 2019. Female representation among poster and podium presentations also increased from 2017 to 2019 (7.7%-23.3% poster presentations and 11.1%-23.4% podium presentations). Invited positions (speakers, panelists, and moderators) had a peak of 32.2% in 2017, but otherwise, there is no clear evidence of improved representation of women.

CONCLUSIONS

We found an increase in the proportion of female registrants at the annual NESPS conferences from 2013 to 2019. However, visibility of female participants fluctuated over the same period; addressing this represents one opportunity for closing the gender gap at the NESPS. As the percentage of female trainees continues to rise, we look to female faculty to continue to participate in educational events, such as the NESPS meeting, and to be present as role models for the growing new generation of female plastic surgeons.

Why Do Physicians Choose Pain as a Specialty?

OBJECTIVE

Numerous forces shape the practice of pain management: scientific advances, technical advances, societal expectations, public health crises, reimbursement factors, and the parameters of who gets trained and what motivates the trainees. In this observational study, we sought to determine expressed motivations for entering the subspecialty of pain management, and in particular whether applicants were more interested in procedural skills (our hypothesis) or rehabilitative and cognitive practices.

METHODS

We analyzed the personal statements of 142 applicants to the University of Minnesota's pain medicine fellowship program. In addition to those themes, the personal statements were scrutinized for other themes such as interest in teaching and research. Comprehensive vs interventional/procedural interests were coded by a group of four research assistants who were trained using practice essays until they achieved high interrater reliability (alpha > 0.8). Two of the researchers coded for additional themes on a two-point scale indicating presence or absence of a particular theme. When they did not agree, a third researcher broke the tie. Theme prevalence was compared by specialty and gender.

RESULTS

Residents expressed interest in interventional and comprehensive pain practice without significant differences; however, there were specialty and gender differences in other themes such as teaching, research, and leadership in program development.

CONCLUSIONS

If pain specialty training is going to meet the needs of prospective residents, patients, and society, we should do more to attract women and neurology and psychiatry residents. We should include more opportunities for research and the flexibility to educate trainees who may not pursue a procedural practice.

Characterization and Comparison of the Utilization of Facebook Groups Between Public Medical Professionals and Technical Communities to Facilitate Idea Sharing and Crowdsourcing During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-sectional Observational Study

BACKGROUND

Strict social distancing measures owing to the COVID-19 pandemic have led people to rely more heavily on social media, such as Facebook groups, as a means of communication and information sharing. Multiple Facebook groups have been formed by medical professionals, laypeople, and engineering or technical groups to discuss current issues and possible solutions to the current medical crisis.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to characterize Facebook groups formed by laypersons, medical professionals, and technical professionals, with specific focus on information dissemination and requests for crowdsourcing.

METHODS

Facebook was queried for user-created groups with the keywords "COVID," "Coronavirus," and "SARS-CoV-2" at a single time point on March 31, 2020. The characteristics of each group were recorded, including language, privacy settings, security requirements to attain membership, and membership type. For each membership type, the group with the greatest number of members was selected, and in each of these groups, the top 100 posts were identified using Facebook's algorithm. Each post was categorized and characterized (evidence-based, crowd-sourced, and whether the poster self-identified). STATA (version 13 SE, Stata Corp) was used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

Our search yielded 257 COVID-19-related Facebook groups. Majority of the groups (n=229, 89%) were for laypersons, 26 (10%) were for medical professionals, and only 2 (1%) were for technical professionals. The number of members was significantly greater in medical groups (21,215, SD 35,040) than in layperson groups (7623, SD 19,480) (P<.01). Medical groups were significantly more likely to require security checks to attain membership (81% vs 43%; P<.001) and less likely to be public (3 vs 123; P<.001) than layperson groups. Medical groups had the highest user engagement, averaging 502 (SD 633) reactions (P<.01) and 224 (SD 311) comments (P<.01) per post. Medical professionals were more likely to use the Facebook groups for education and information sharing, including academic posts (P<.001), idea sharing (P=.003), resource sharing (P=.02) and professional opinions (P<.001), and requesting for crowdsourcing (P=.003). Layperson groups were more likely to share news (P<.001), humor and motivation (P<.001), and layperson opinions (P<.001). There was no significant difference in the number of evidence-based posts among the groups (P=.10).

CONCLUSIONS

Medical professionals utilize Facebook groups as a forum to facilitate collective intelligence (CI) and are more likely to use Facebook groups for education and information sharing, including academic posts, idea sharing, resource sharing, and professional opinions, which highlights the power of social media to facilitate CI across geographic distances. Layperson groups were more likely to share news, humor, and motivation, which suggests the utilization of Facebook groups to provide comedic relief as a coping mechanism. Further investigations are necessary to study Facebook groups' roles in facilitating CI, crowdsourcing, education, and community-building.

New Age Mentoring and Disruptive Innovation-Navigating the Uncharted With Vision, Purpose, and Equity

For individuals aspiring to a career in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, mentorship can shape destiny. Mentorship helps assure safe passage into the specialty, and it influences the arc of professional development across the career continuum. Even before the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, technology and social networking were transforming mentorship in otolaryngology. Now, in an increasingly virtual world, where in-person interactions are the exception, mentorship plays an even more pivotal role. Mentors serve as trusted guides, helping learners navigate accelerating trends toward early specialization, competency-based assessments, and key milestones. However, several structural barriers render the playing field unlevel. For medical students, cancellation of visiting clerkships, in-person rotations, and other face-to-face interactions may limit access to mentors. The pandemic and virtual landscape particularly threaten the already-leaky pipeline for underrepresented medical students. These challenges may persist into residency and later career stages, where structural inequities continue to subtly influence opportunities and pairings of mentors and mentees. Hence, overreliance on serendipitous encounters can exacerbate disparities, even amid societal mandates for equity. The decision to take deliberate steps toward mentoring outreach and engagement has profound implications for what otolaryngology will look like in years to come. This article introduces the concept of new age mentoring, shining a light on how to modernize practices. The key shifts are from passive to active engagement; from amorphous to structured relationships; and from hierarchical dynamics to bidirectional mentoring. Success is predicated on intentional outreach and purposefulness in championing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the progressively technology-driven landscape.

2020 Women in Thoracic Surgery update on the status of women in cardiothoracic surgery

BACKGROUND

Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) has previously reported on the status of women in cardiothoracic (CT) surgery. We sought to provide a 10-year update on women in CT.

METHODS

An anonymous REDCap survey link was emailed to female diplomats of the ABTS. Survey questions queried respondents regarding demographics, training, accolades, practice details, and career satisfaction. The survey link was open for 30 days. Results were compared to the 2019 Society of Thoracic Surgeons work force survey. Descriptive analyses were performed using frequency and proportions. Comparisons were performed using Student's t-tests, Fisher exact and chi-squared tests.

RESULTS

Of 354 female diplomats, 309 were contacted and 176 (57%) responded. The majority of respondents were age 36-50 (59%), Caucasian (67.4%), and graduated from traditional-track programs (91.4%). Most respondents reported practicing in an urban (64%) and academic setting (73.1%). 36.4% and 23.9% reported a general thoracic and adult cardiac practice (22.7% mixed practice, 9.6% congenital). Fifty percent of respondents reported salaries between $400,000-700,000 annually; 37.7% reported salaries <90% of their male colleagues. 21.6% of respondents in academia are full professor; 53.4% report having a leadership role. While 74.1% would pursue a career in CT again, only 27.3% agreed that CT surgery is a healthy and positive environment for women.

CONCLUSIONS

The number of women in CT surgery has steadily increased. While women are rising in academic rank and into leadership positions, salary disparities and the CT surgery work environment remain important issues in achieving a diverse work force.

Trends in Female Authorship: A Bibliometric Analysis of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery

BACKGROUND

Women continue to comprise a small minority of cardiothoracic surgeons. Representation of women in areas of academic achievement has not been well characterized. This study aims to evaluate female representation among authorship positions in high-impact articles published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

METHODS

Altmetric scores were used to identify the top 50 articles published in 2013, 2015, and 2017 in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Article characteristics as well as author demographics were collected. Bibliometric analysis was performed to identify longitudinal changes with regard to female representation as first and last authors.

RESULTS

Female authors remain underrepresented in authorship, despite a temporal trend toward improvement in female representation over the years for first author position (16% in 2013, 22% in 2015, 20% in 2017) and last author position (8% in 2013, 16% in 2015, 20% in 2017). Articles authored by women were equally likely to achieve high impact as compared with men, as evaluated by Altmetric score (women 30.1 ± 38.6 vs men 39.1 ± 73.5, P = .53), citations (women 14.3 ± 19.1 vs men 17.6 ± 20.8, P = .45), and to be mentioned by news outlets, blogs, patents, Facebook, Wikipedia, Mendeley, Google, LinkedIn, and Reddit. Female first and last authors achieved comparable numbers of publications and H-index scores compared with male authors.

CONCLUSIONS

Significant sex-based differences in authorship representation persist, but with favorable improvement in female representation over time. Importantly, citations and high-impact status were independent of author sex. Characterization of the representation of women in academic achievement helps us strive for gender equity in our specialty.

Women in Cardiology Twitter Network: An Analysis of a Global Professional Virtual Community From 2016 to 2019

Background Social media is an effective channel for the advancement of women physicians; however, its use by women in cardiology has not been systematically studied. Our study seeks to characterize the current Women in Cardiology Twitter network. Methods and Results Six women-specific cardiology Twitter hashtags were analyzed: #ACCWIC (American College of Cardiology Women in Cardiology), #AHAWIC (American Heart Association Women in Cardiology), #ilooklikeacardiologist, #SCAIWIN (Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Women in Innovations), #WomeninCardiology, and #WomeninEP (Women in Electrophysiology). Twitter data from 2016 to 2019 were obtained from Symplur Signals. Quantitative and descriptive content analyses were performed. The Women in Cardiology Twitter network generated 48 236 tweets, 266 180 903 impressions, and 12 485 users. Tweets increased by 706% (from 2083 to 16 780), impressions by 207% (from 26 755 476 to 82 080 472), and users by 440% (from 796 to 4300), including a 471% user increase internationally. The network generated 6530 (13%) original tweets and 43 103 (86%) amplification tweets. Most original and amplification tweets were authored by women (81% and 62%, respectively) and women physicians (76% and 52%, respectively), with an increase in original and amplification tweets authored by academic women physicians (98% and 109%, respectively) and trainees (390% and 249%, respectively) over time. Community building, professional development, and gender advocacy were the most common tweet contents over the study period. Community building was the most common tweet category for #ACCWIC, #AHAWIC, #ilooklikeacardiologist, #SCAIWIN, and #WomeninCardiology, whereas professional development was most common for #WomeninEP. Conclusions The Women in Cardiology Twitter network has grown immensely from 2016 to 2019, with women physicians as the driving contributors. This network has become an important channel for community building, professional development, and gender advocacy discussions in an effort to advance women in cardiology.

OHNS Residency Program and Applicant Social Media Presence During the COVID-19 Pandemic

OBJECTIVES

In addition to clinical and social disruption, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected many aspects of the otolaryngology residency application process. With delays in the 2021 Electronic Residency Applications Service (ERAS) timeline, students and programs have had more time to interact prior to the formal application process. This communication will report recent trends in social media presence by OHNS residency programs, and discuss mechanisms to compensate for decreased applicant-program interactions using social media ahead of the 2021 Match.

METHODS

In a cross-sectional study of the accredited otolaryngology residency programs in the United States, the number of social media profiles on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook from 2009 to 2019 were recorded and compared.

RESULTS

Most programs (61%) have at least 1 social media profile. Over the past 10 years, the number of programs on social media has increased. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Twitter and Instagram showed higher rates of growth compared to Facebook. With the reduction of in-person opportunities for interactions, both applicants and programs are utilizing social media to showcase their values and their research. Twitter, in particular, also serves as a platform for professional networking.

CONCLUSION

Both Twitter and Instagram are growing in popularity among programs and applicants to enhance networking. Social media is a powerful tool for networking and may help compensate for limitations imposed on the residency match process by the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining professionalism considerations. The impact of social media on the 2021 otolaryngology residency match is an evolving phenomenon.

US women in thoracic surgery: reflections on the past and opportunities for the future

Herein, we examine the state of women in thoracic surgery from the United States (US) perspective in terms of our past, present, and opportunities for the future. We explore the achievements of the first three women certified in thoracic surgery in 1961 and describe the progress made resulting in the current state. Women constitute slightly more than 50% of all medical students in the US, yet women remain underrepresented in thoracic surgery. The disparity is most notable for female representation in senior academic leadership positions, reflecting stagnation in progress. The lack of gender equity has important implications for projected workforce shortages and patient safety in cardiothoracic surgery. Recent organized efforts in scholarships and leadership training, as well as increasing awareness and mentorship, may herald progress on the horizon. Ultimately, however, engagement of leadership and top-down change are needed to achieve equity and, thereby, to improve patient health and satisfaction.

Women in thoracic surgery: social media and the value of mentorship

Social media serves as a tool to fill gaps in current efforts to promote women in cardiothoracic surgery, and, given its global reach, may be a particularly effective modality. Social media has an important role in networking and mentorship, especially for women seeking careers in specialties with relatively sparse female representation, such as cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, social media may facilitate professional interactions, collaboration, growth of online reputations, engagement in continued education, communication of novel research findings, and patient education. Herein, we review the evidence for social media in the networking and mentorship of women in cardiothoracic surgery. Future studies are needed to establish the durability of social media efforts and predictors in its effectiveness in achieving its goals.

Attitudes of Neurosurgeons Toward Social Media: A Multi-Institutional Study

BACKGROUND

Social media has become an important communication tool in modern life, and its use is undoubtedly increasing worldwide. Given the rising importance of social media in the health care system, little is known about neurosurgeons' social media use and interactions in the context of professional purposes. This study aimed to analyze social media usage and opinions among neurosurgeons in terms of age, gender, and practice setting.

METHODS

An online survey was administered to neurosurgeons worldwide. A total of 1119 neurosurgeons from 104 different countries responded to the questionnaire.

RESULTS

All respondents were members of at least 1 social media platform. Older neurosurgeons and neurosurgeons in nonacademic settings spent less time on social media (P < 0.05). Communication with peers via social media decreased with age, while communication via e-mail increased (P < 0.05). Most respondents perceived the effect of social media to be beneficial to neurosurgery (very beneficial [28.73%], somewhat beneficial [35.55%]). More women than men considered that social media platforms provided a greater chance for networking opportunities, learning about a new study or conference, and providing rapid and widespread knowledge transfer (P < 0.05). False guidance (44.68%) and violation of privacy (41.64%) were thought to be the main disadvantages.

CONCLUSIONS

Social media use, opinions, and attitudes among neurosurgeons vary depending on their age, gender, and practice setting. Most neurosurgeons stated that the use of social media could have beneficial and advantageous effects on neurosurgery practice, while the frequency of misleading information and lack of privacy were perceived as barriers.

Social Media in Surgery

Social media has become a permeating form of communication with billions of daily users. Twitter in particular has become a tool for the surgical community to engage with other providers, as well as patients, through active online discussions, sharing of research, and highlighting opportunities for community outreach. Twitter can help with personal branding, mentorship, and international collaboration on multiple types of academic endeavors. Likewise, institutional and residency programs can harness the power of social media to develop an online presence and aid in resident recruitment.

Equal means equal: Cardiothoracic surgery in its second century

OBJECTIVE

As the specialty of cardiothoracic surgery turns the corner into its second century of existence, there has been an uptick in the number of women and underrepresented minorities entering the field, but we have a long way to go before race and gender equity prevails.

METHODS

In this report, specific barriers to diversity without exclusion and mechanisms to breakdown these barriers will be explored.

RESULTS

Barriers to inclusion include a long-standing deficiency in exposure, encouragement, mentorship, and sponsorship to actively attract underrepresented groups to the specialty. Diversity will not occur passively. It will take a concerted effort best employed through a top-down approach at the local and national level, and it has to seem normal.

CONCLUSIONS

Cardiothoracic surgery is an outstanding field for anyone and everyone who seeks a challenging, rewarding career, regardless of their gender, race, or ethnic background. It is the responsibility of leadership to dispel the tradition that certain individuals are not welcome.
