Sulfidation of Cd-Sch during the microbial sulfate reduction: Nanoscale redistribution of Cd

Schwertmannite (Sch) is found in environments abundant in iron and sulfate. Microorganisms that utilize iron or sulfate can induce the phase transition of Schwertmannite, consequently leading to the redistribution of coexisting pollutants. However, the impact of the molar ratio of sulfate to iron (S/Fe) on the microbial-mediated transformation of Schwertmannite and its implications for the fate of cadmium (Cd) have not been elucidated. In this study, we examined how S/Fe influenced mineral transformation and the fate of Cd during microbial reduction of Cd-loaded Schwertmannite by Desulfovibrio vulgaris. Our findings revealed that an increase in the S/Fe ratio facilitated sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in mitigating the toxicity of Cd, thereby expediting the generation of sulfide (S(-II)) and subsequently triggering mineral phase transformation. As the S/Fe ratio increased, the predominant minerals in the system transitioned from prismatic-cluster vivianite to rose-shaped mackinawite. The Cd phase and distribution underwent corresponding alterations. Cd primarily existed in its oxidizable state, with its distribution being directly linked not only to FeS content but also showing a robust correlation with phosphorus. The coexistence of vivianite and FeS minerals proved to be more favorable for Cd immobilization. These findings have significant implications for understanding the biogeochemistry of iron (oxyhydr)oxides and Cd fate in anaerobic environments.

Unveiling the impacts of microplastics on cadmium transfer in the soil-plant-human system: A review

The co-contamination of soils by microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd), one of the most perilous heavy metals, is emerging as a significant global concern, posing risks to plant productivity and human health. However, there remains a gap in the literature concerning comprehensive evaluations of the combined effects of MPs and Cd on soil-plant-human systems. This review examines the interactions and co-impacts of MPs and Cd in soil-plant-human systems, elucidating their mechanisms and synergistic effects on plant development and health risks. We also review the origins and contamination levels of MPs and Cd, revealing that sewage, atmospheric deposition, and biosolid applications are contributors to the contamination of soil with MPs and Cd. Our meta-analysis demonstrates that MPs significantly (p<0.05) increase the bioavailability of soil Cd and the accumulation of Cd in plant shoots by 6.9 and 9.3 %, respectively. The MPs facilitate Cd desorption from soils through direct adsorption via surface complexation and physical adsorption, as well as indirectly by modifying soil physicochemical properties, such as pH and dissolved organic carbon, and altering soil microbial diversity. These interactions augment the bioavailability of Cd, along with MPs, adversely affect plant growth and its physiological functions. Moreover, the ingestion of MPs and Cd through the food chain significantly enhances the bioaccessibility of Cd and exacerbates histopathological alterations in human tissues, thereby amplifying the associated health risks. This review provides insights into the coexistence of MPs and Cd and their synergistic effects on soil-plant-human systems, emphasizing the need for further research in this critical subject area.

The critical role of organic matter for cadmium-lead interactions in soil: Mechanisms and risks

Understanding the interaction mechanisms between complex heavy metals and soil components is a prerequisite for effectively forecasting the mobility and availability of contaminants in soils. Soil organic matter (SOM), with its diverse functional groups, has long been a focal point of research interest. In this study, four soils with manipulated levels of SOM, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were subjected to a 90-day incubation experiment. The competitive interactions between Cd and Pb in soils were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray adsorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis. Our results indicate that Pb competed with Cd for adsorption sites on the surface of SOM, particularly on carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups. Approximately 22.6 % of Cd adsorption sites on humus were occupied by Pb. The use of sequentially extracted exchangeable heavy metals as indicators for environment risk assessments, considering variations in soil physico-chemical properties and synergistic or antagonistic effects between contaminants, provides a better estimation of metal bioavailability and its potential impacts. Integrating comprehensive contamination characterization of heavy metal interactions with the soil organic phase is an important advancement to assess the environmental risks of heavy metal dynamics in soil compared to individual contamination assessments.

The Role of Chlorella vulgaris in Attenuating Infertility Induced by Cadmium Chloride via Suppressing Oxidative Stress and Modulating Spermatogenesis and Steroidogenesis in Male Rats

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental pollutant known as endocrine disruptor . Cd has been reported to induce perturbations of the testicular functions and the subsequent decline of the male fertility of both animals and humans. Chlorella vulgaris (ChV) a species of green microalga has been reported to have multiple beneficial activities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiapoptotic effects. Thus, this work was conducted to declare the benefits of Chlorella vulgaris (ChV) (500 mg/kg doses) against cadmium chloride CdCl2 (2 mg/kg doses) toxicity on the main and accessory reproductive organs' weight, structure, and function of male rats. Briefly, 40 adult male rats in 4 groups (n = 10) were used as follows; control, ChV, CdCl2, and CdCl2+ChV. (i) The 1st group was kept as control fed on pellet chow and water ad libitum. (ii) The second group is Chlorella vulgaris (ChV) group fed with C. vulgaris alga for 10 days (500 mg/kg BW). (iii) The third group was administrated CdCl2 (2mg/kg BW) via subcutaneous injection (S/C) daily for 10 days. (iv) The fourth group administered both CdCl2 and ChV with the abovementioned doses daily for successive 10 days. Our observations declared that cadmium exhibited an adverse influence on the testes and prostate gland architecture indicated by seminiferous tubule destruction, testicular edema, degeneration of Leydig cells, and prostate acini damage. All together affect the epididymal semen quality and quantity including sperm viability, motility, and count. Interestingly, ChV could restore the testicular architecture and spermatozoa regeneration accompanied by semen quality improvement and increased reproductive hormones including testosterone. On the other side, ChV suppresses reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation via enhancement the antioxidant-related genes in the testicular tissue including SOD, CAT, GSH, and MDA and maintaining spermatocyte survival via suppression of apoptotic related genes including caspase3 and activating steroidogenic related genes including StAR and HSD17β3 in the cadmium-treated testes. In this study, ChV could enhance male fertility under normal or stressful conditions and ameliorate the adverse effects of hazardous heavy metals that are widely distributed in our environment.

Preparation of phosphorylated rice husk for cadmium adsorption: Crucial role of phosphonyl group

Rice husk is a locally available biomass for preparation of adsorbents to deal with cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy system. In this study, phosphorylation of rice husk using H3PO4 and NH4H2PO4 was carried out in the presence of urea at 165℃ to obtain APB-C and NPB-C, respectively. According to the material characterizations, phosphonyl groups were successfully grafted on the rice husk. Both APB-C and NPB-C had high performance for Cd(II) adsorption with the capacities of 146 and 129 mg/g, respectively. The main mechanism of Cd(II) adsorption was ion exchange with NH4+. The adsorption capacity was linearly corelated with phosphorus content (R2 = 0.9997), while the Langmuir constant had high correlation efficient (R2 = 0.996) with phosphonyl group percentage. Further quantum chemical calculation showed higher interaction energy between Cd(II) and phosphonyl group than other groups. These results indicated that phosphonyl group governed Cd(II) adsorption on phosphorylated biomass.

Bio-pump cadmium phytoextraction efficiency promoted by phytohormones in Festuca arundinacea

The leaves of Festuca arundinacea can excrete cadmium (Cd) out onto the leaf surface, leading to a bio-pump phytoremediation strategy based on "root uptake-root-to-leaf translocation-leaf excretion". However, the bio-bump efficiency of soil Cd is a limiting factor for the implementation of this novel technology. Bio-bump remediation involves the bioprocess of plant root uptake from soil, root-to-leaf translocation, and leaf hydathode excretion. Here we show the significant effects of phytohormones in regulating the bio-pump phytoextraction efficiency. The results showed that salicylic acid and ethylene enhanced the whole process of Cd root uptake, root-to-leaf translocation, and leaf excretion, promoting the bio-pump phytoextraction efficiency by 63.6% and 73.8%, respectively. Gibberellin also greatly promoted Cd translocation, leaf excretion, and phytoextraction, but did not significantly impact Cd root uptake. Our results indicate that salicylic acid and ethylene could be recommended to promote bio-pump phytoextraction efficiency in F. arundinacea. Gibberellin might be used for a short-term promotion of the leaf Cd excretion.

Cadmium uptake and detoxification in tomato plants: Revealing promising targets for genetic improvement

Cadmium (Cd) is a hazardous heavy metal known for its detrimental effects on plants, human health, and the environment. This review article delves into the dynamics of Cd uptake, long-distance transport, and its impact on plant performance, with a specific focus on tomato plants. The process of Cd uptake by roots and its subsequent long-distance transport in the xylem and phloem are explored to understand how Cd influences plants operation. The toxic effects of Cd on tomato plants are discussed, highlighting on the challenges it poses to plant growth and development. Furthermore, the review investigates various Cd tolerance mechanisms in plants, including avoidance or exclusion by the root cell wall, root-to-shoot translocation, detoxification pathways, and antioxidative defence systems against Cd-induced stress. In addition, the transcriptomic analyses of tomato plants under Cd stress provide insights into the molecular responses and adaptations of plants to Cd toxicity. Overall, this comprehensive review enhances our understanding of Cd-plant interactions and reveal promising genes for tomato genetic improvement to increase its tolerance to cadmium.

Prevailing parasitic diseases affecting Oreochromis aureus in Lake Burullus

Lake Burullus is an important source of fish production in Egypt; it produces 20.5% of the Egyptian fisheries' production. There is intense controversy about the heavy metal pollution in Burullus water and its effects on fish health and safety for human consumption. Heavy metals represent a major concern for aquatic life and could negatively affect fish health. Agricultural and industrial water drainage represents a considerable part of the lake water supply. The present work was conducted to determine heavy metal concentrations in lake water and blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus musculature. Water samples were collected from six locations to determine cadmium, copper, lead, zinc and iron. Sixty O. aureus fish samples were also collected from the same sampling points to assess the prevalent parasites infesting fish and to determine the heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe) concentrations in fish musculature then study the relationship between heavy metals concentration and prevailing fish parasites. Results indicated that 53.34% of the examined fish were infested with encysted metacercaria. Centrocestus formosanus, Prohemistomum vivax, and Euclinostomum heterostomum were retrieved from gills, musculature, hepatopancreas and the posterior kidney. The parasitic intensity in fish tissues was between 1 and 9 cyst g-1. Centrocestus formosanus was identified using the polymerase chain reaction in the gill tissues of 16 fish. The gill parasitic copepod Lamproglena monodi was identified in one fish. Degenerative changes such as thickening, corrugation, and destruction of gill filament are the most dominant pathological changes in infested fish gills. Heavy metal concentrations in water samples were at normal levels, except for copper and iron in the southern part of the lake. All heavy metals in fish musculature were below the permissible limits. The parasitic infestation was more dominant in the northern part of the lake than in the southern region; this could be due to elevated copper concentration in the southern part of the lake that could negatively affect the survival of the first intermediate host and parasite cercaria. In conclusion, captured fish from Lake Burullus were safe for human consumption, and heavy metal pollution in lake water does not represent a severe risk.

Toxic element characterization against a typical high geology background: Pollution enrichment, source tracking, spatial distribution, and ecological risk assessment

The geological environment determines the initial content of various elements in soil, while the late input of toxic elements produced through weathering and leaching is a persistent threat to food security and human health. In this study, we selected the Lou Shao Basin, a black rock system background, and combined geostatistical analysis and multivariate statistics to quantify the specific contribution of weathering of the black rock system, and to analyze the source traces, spatial distributions, and ecological risks of the soil toxicity of elements. The results show that the soils in the study area are acidic, which is related to the weathering of sulfides in the black rock system. The concentrations of most elements in the soil were determined to exceed the soil background values, and the Cd, Se and N contents, exceeded more than five times, especially Se, Mo nearly as high as 13 times. Strong positive correlation between Se, Cu, V and P, low correlation between N and Se, Cu, V, P, Ni and Cd.72.52%, 43%, 77.79%, 82%, 77%, and 44.1% of Cd, Se, Ni, Cu, B, and Mo came from the black rock system, respectively, which were greatly affected by geogenic weathering; V, Zn, Pb, and As are mainly from biomass burning sources; N and P are mainly from agricultural surface sources. Comparison found that the Cd and Se elements in the rocks in the study area were 16.78 times and 1.36 times higher than the world shale average, respectively, and need to pay attention to the weathering process of the two, and the spatial distribution of the 12 elements in soils showed a striped and centralized block distribution pattern, specifically around the distribution of carbonate and metamorphic rocks and other high-geology blocks. The ecological risk results showed that Cd was the main element causing high ecological risk, followed by Se and N, which were at moderate to high ecological risk levels, and Se and N showed similar ecological risk patterns, which may be related to the fact that selenium can promote the uptake and transformation of nitrogen. The present results add to the endogenous sources of toxic elements, quantify the source contributions of toxic elements in soils with high geologic backgrounds, fill this knowledge gap, and provide new insights for pollution control and ecological protection in areas with high geochemical backgrounds.

Unravelling the influence of microplastics with/without additives on radish (Raphanus sativus) and microbiota in two agricultural soils differing in pH

Here we investigated the effects of three types of microplastics (MPs), i.e., PS (P), ABS (B), PVC (V), and each with additive (MPAs) (PA, BA, and VA), on soil health, microbial community, and plant growth in two acidic and slightly alkaline soils. Incubation experiment revealed that although MPs and MPAs consistently stimulated soil nutrients and heavy metals (e.g., Mn, Cu) in weakly alkaline soils, only BA and VA led to increase in soil nutrients and heavy metals in acidic soils. This suggests distinct response patterns in the two soils depending on their initial pH. Concerning microorganisms, MPs and MPAs reduced the assembly degree of bacteria in acidic soils, with a reduction of Chloroflexi and Acidobacteriota but an increase of WPS-2 in VA. Culture experiment showed consistent positive or negative responses in radish seed germination, roots, and antioxidant activity across MPs and MPAs types in both soils, while the responses of seed heavy metals (e.g., Cr, Cd) were consistent in acidic soils but dependent on MPs and MPAs types in alkaline soils. Therefore, our study strongly suggests that the effects of MPs on soil-microbial-plant systems were highly dependent on initial soil characteristics and the types of MPs with plastic additives.

An effective procedure used metal-organic framework for determination of cadmium ions in real tap water and human blood plasma samples

A newly developed 2H5MA-MOF sensor by covalently linking NH2-MIL-53(Al) with 2'-Hydroxy-5'-methylacetophenon, designed for highly sensitive and selective detection of Cd2+ ions using fluorometric methods. Detailed structural and morphological analyses confirmed the sensor's unique properties. It demonstrated an impressive linear detection range from 0 to 2 ppm, with an exceptionally low detection limit of 5.77 × 10-2 ppm and a quantification limit of 1.75 × 10-1 ppm, indicating its high sensitivity (R2 = 0.9996). The sensor also responded quickly, detecting Cd2+ within just 30 s at pH 4. We successfully tested it on real samples of tap water and human blood plasma, achieving recovery rates between 96 % and 104 %. The accuracy of these findings was further validated by comparison with ICP-OES. Overall, the 2H5MA-MOF sensor shows great potential for fast, ultra-sensitive, and reliable detection of Cd2+ ions, making it a promising tool for environmental and biomedical applications.

Strengthening bioremediation potential: Enterobacter ludwigii ES2 for combined nicosulfuron and Cd contamination through whole genome and microbial diversity community analysis

Nicosulfuron and Cd are common pollutants that pose significant threats to the environment and human health, particularly under combined stress. This study is the first to remediate environmental nicosulfuron and Cd under combined stress using microbiological techniques. Enterobacter ludwigii ES2 was isolated, characterized, and demonstrated to degrade 93.80 % of nicosulfuron and remove 59.64 % of Cd within 4 d. Potential functional genes, including nicosulfuron degradation genes gstA, gstB, glnQ, glnP, mreB, and sixA, and Cd tolerance/removal-related genes mntA, mntB, mntH, dnaK, znuA, and zupt, were predicted by sequencing the whole genome of strain ES2, and their expression was verified by qRT-PCR. Strain ES2 managed oxidative stress induced by Cd through superoxide dismutase, glutathione, catalase, peroxidase, and malondialdehyde. Furthermore, to repair compound stress, up to 90.48 % of nicosulfuron and 67.74 % of Cd were removed. The community structure analysis indicated that Enterobacteriaceae, Sphingomonadaceae, and Gemmatimonadaceae were dominant populations, with ES2 stably colonizing and becoming the dominant bacterium. In summary, ES2 demonstrated significant potential in remediating nicosulfuron and Cd pollution from various perspectives, providing a solid theoretical foundation.

The Contribution of Trichoderma viride and Metallothioneins in Enhancing the Seed Quality of Avena sativa L. in Cd-Contaminated Soil

Pollution of arable land with heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal that poses a severe threat to humans' and animals' health and lives. Plants can easily absorb Cd from the soil, and plant-based food is the main means of exposure to this hazardous element for humans and animals. Phytoremediation is a promising plant-based approach to removing heavy metals from the soil, and plant growth-promoting micro-organisms such as the fungi Trichoderma can enhance the ability of plants to accumulate metals. Inoculation of Avena sativa L. (oat) with Trichoderma viride enhances germination and seedling growth in the presence of Cd and, in this study, the growth of 6-month-old oat plants in Cd-contaminated soil was not increased by inoculation with T. viride, but a 1.7-fold increase in yield was observed. The content of Cd in oat shoots depended on the Cd content in the soil. Still, it was unaffected by the inoculation with T. viride. A. sativa metallothioneins (AsMTs) participate in plant-fungi interaction, however, their role in this study depended on MT type and Cd concentration. The inoculation of A. sativa with T. viride could be a promising approach to obtaining a high yield in Cd-contaminated soil without increasing the Cd content in the plant.

Advanced approach combines integrated weight water quality index and potential toxic elements for environmental and health risk assessment supported by simulation technique in Oued Souf, Algeria

The current research study evaluated the health and environmental risks issues associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the complex terminal aquifer located in the Algerian desert. The methods used included principal component and cluster (dendrogram) analysis to estimate source of ions and contamination. Various indices such as the Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI), Metal Index, hazard quotient, hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) were applied to assess both environmental and human health risks. Furthermore, the Monte Carlo method was applied for probabilistic assessment of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks through oral and dermal exposure routes in both adults and children. The results revealed that approximately 16% of the samples fell within the low pollution category (HPI < 100), indicating relatively lower levels of heavy metal contamination. However, the remaining 84% of the samples exhibited high pollution levels, indicating a significant presence of heavy metal pollutants in the northeastern part of the investigated area. The calculated average risk index (RI) for the collected samples was 18.99, with a range from 0.03 to 103.21. This indicates that a large portion, 82% of the samples, could cause low ecological risk (RI < 30), whereas the remaining 18% indicate a significant environmental pollution risk. The HI for oral ingestion showed that adults had HI values ranging from 0.231 to 1.54, while children exhibited higher values, ranging from 0.884 to 5.9 (Fig. 5a). For dermal exposure, HI values in adults ranged from 2.71E-07 to 8.74E-06 and in children, from 2.18E-06 to 7.03E-05. These findings highlight the potential non-carcinogenic risks associated with oral exposure to PTEs and underscore the increased vulnerability of children to metals such as Fe, Mn, Pb, and Cr. Most samples showed CR exceeding 1 × 10-4 for chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb), indicating a significant vulnerability to carcinogenic effects in both children and adults.

Cadmium and phthalate impacts developmental growth and mortality of Spodoptera littoralis, but not reproductive success

Our environment is increasingly polluted with various molecules, some of which are considered endocrine disruptors. Metals and phthalates, originating from industrial activities, agricultural practices, or consumer products, are prominent examples of such pollutants. We experimentally investigated the impacts of the heavy metal cadmium and the phthalate DEHP on the moth Spodoptera littoralis. More specifically, larvae were reared in laboratory conditions, where they were exposed to diets contaminated with either two doses of cadmium at concentrations of 62.5 µg/g or 125 µg/g, two doses of DEHP at 100 ng/g and 10 µg/g, or a combination of both low and high doses of the two compounds, with a control group for comparison. Our findings indicate that cadmium delays the developmental transition from larva to adult. Notably, the combination of cadmium and DEHP exacerbated this delay, highlighting a synergistic effect. In contrast, DEHP alone did not affect larval development. Additionally, we observed that cadmium exposure, both alone and in combination with DEHP, led to a lower mass at all larval stages. However, cadmium-exposed individuals that reached adulthood eventually reached a similar mass to those in other groups. Interestingly, while our results did not show any effect of the treatments on hatching success, there was a higher adult mortality rate in the cadmium-treated groups. This suggests that while moths may prioritize reproductive success, their survival at the adult stage is compromised by cadmium exposure. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the impact of cadmium on the development, mass, and adult survival of moths, and reveals synergistic effects when combined with DEHP. These results confirm cadmium as an endocrine disruptor, even at low doses. These insights underscore the importance of understanding the toxicological effects of low doses of pollutants like cadmium and DEHP, both individually and in combination.

The Impact of Organic Selenium (IV) on Hypericum perforatum L. under Cadmium Stress and Non-Stress Conditions

The issue of soil contamination by heavy metals is widely acknowledged. Some plants, including medicinal species like St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), exhibit accumulation traits, allowing them to accumulate elevated levels of metals, e.g., cadmium (Cd), within their cells. Selenium (Se) may increase the tolerance of plants to abiotic stress caused by the presence of heavy metal in the environment. Depending on its form (oxidation state, organic/inorganic), Se influences plant growth, secondary metabolite content, and biotic stress, as well as incorporates into shoots, providing economic and health benefits for consumers. So far, there are no data on the influence of organic Se(IV) on plants. Our study aimed to determine the effect of organic Se(IV) on the growth, active compound levels (anthranoids, polyphenols), and ultrastructure of St. John's wort without and under cadmium stress. The phytochemical analysis and microscopic examination was performed on shoots from different days of St. John's wort in vitro culture on a few variants of Murashige and Skoog medium with Cd (25 and 400 µM) and/or organic Se (IV). Exposure to Se(IV) did not affect hypericins but increased the polyphenol content in the shoots and the biomass. Se(IV) caused an increase in starch grain number in chloroplasts, whereas Cd exposure resulted in the degradation of the chloroplast structure, increased cell vacuolation, as well as swollen mitochondrial cristae. The addition of Se(IV) to these combinations reduced the degree of degradation and growth inhibition and a high content of Se(IV) in plants was observed. Se(IV) had no impact on Cd content at environmental Cd concentrations, but showed an effect at extremely high Cd concentrations. Thus, organic Se(IV) has a beneficial effect on St. John's wort growth, polyphenol content, and incorporation in shoots and prevents Cd toxicity. Media enriched with organic Se(IV) have both economic advantages and health benefits due to a higher plant growth rate and increased concentrations of polyphenols with strong antioxidant properties, relatively enriched with Se. However, organic Se(IV) should be used with caution in polluted areas. In perspective, speciation analysis and molecular study are crucial to understand the fate and effect of Se (IV) on plants.

Is the milk we drink safe from elevated concentrations of prioritised heavy metals/metalloids? - A global systematic review and meta-analysis followed by a cursory risk assessment reporting

Milk has been globally recognised as a comprehensive and vital food source for centuries. However, the presence of heavy metals and metalloids (metal(loid)s) in milk is a global problem. As metal(loid)s are present in the soil due to natural geogenic and various anthropogenic activities, these metal(loid)s are bio-transferred into animal feed, which further results in the presence of metal(loid)s in milk due to bio transfer/accumulation. This systematic review collated information from published literature between 2000 and 2021. It focused on the global issue of metal(loid)s in milk, posing potential health risks. These contaminants enter the food chain through the bio-transfer/accumulation process from soil to animal feed to milk. The key metal(loid)s examined are arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd). A meta-analysis of 66 selected papers revealed the widespread presence of these contaminants in milk samples globally, with Pb being the most studied (43 %). This research estimated metal(loid)s levels or concentrations as 12.71 (95 % Confidence Interval (CI) = 0.16-25.26), 16.09 (95 % CI = 4.31-27.70), 197.04 (95 % CI = 75.28-318.18), 31.67 (95 % CI = 20.14-43.20) μg/kg (ppb) for As, Hg, Pb, and Cd, respectively using Stata™. The metal(loid) concentrations in milk were within the threshold limits other than Pb and Cd. Some studies in America, Africa, and Asia reported elevated Pb and Cd concentrations, raising health concerns. The simulated Risk Quotients (RQ) and Integrated Risk Quotient (IRQ) values generally remain above one, indicating potential human health risks. Notably, the IRQ value increases with more metal(loid)s consideration. Subgroup analysis indicates low-fat milk contains higher metal(loid)s concentrations. While metal(loid)s concentrations in milk largely comply with safety limits, some regions exhibit concerning concentrations. Therefore, continued surveillance to address potential health risks associated with metal(loid)s in milk is necessary to ensure dairy products' safety.

Separation of plant protection products from complex aqueous bodies using carbon-mineral composites incorporated with double metals (Ni/Mn or Ni/Fe)

Due to the extensive application of pesticides and their hazardous effects on organisms, there is an urgent need to remove them effectively from wastewater. Metal-incorporated carbon-mineral composites (Ni/Mn-CMC and Ni/Fe-CMC) described in this paper can certainly be applied for this purpose. They were synthesized by combining mechanochemical and pyrolytic processes and their physicochemical properties were investigated using numerous methods (SEM-EDS, N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, surface charge, FTIR). Adsorption capacity towards diuron and carboxin with and without impurities commonly detected in natural ecosystems, cadmium ions or arsenite, was measured. The obtained results indicated that Ni/Fe-CMC is more efficient adsorbent of pesticides due to its well-developed surface. It was able to bind 158.34 mg g-1 of diuron and 133.58 mg g-1 of carboxin in the solutions, where only one pesticide was present. In turn, these values for the Ni/Mn-CMC sample were 126.49 mg g-1 and 102.08 mg g-1, respectively. It should be noted that the composites maintained their high adsorption capacity in the multicomponent solutions, i.e., containing both pesticide and metal ions. Then, the maximum reduction in pesticide adsorption was only 8.36. Ni/Mn-CMC and Ni/Fe-CMC were successfully regenerated with ethanol without changing their structure and adsorption capacity. Also, the extracts from investigated materials did not have negative impact on plant growth. This confirmed suitability of carbon-mineral composites for repeated multiple use without toxic effects to organisms.

Low-cost precision agriculture for sustainable farming using paper-based analytical devices

The United Nations estimates that by 2030, agricultural production must increase by 70% to meet food demand. Precision agriculture (PA) optimizes production through efficient resource use, with soil fertility being crucial for nutrient supply. Traditional nutrient quantification methods are costly and time-consuming. This study introduces a rapid (15 min), user-friendly, paper-based platform for determining four essential macronutrients-nitrate, magnesium, calcium, and ammonium-using colorimetric methods and a smartphone for data reading and storage. The sensor effectively detects typical soil nutrient concentrations, showing strong linearity and adequate detection limits. For nitrate, the RGB method resulted in an R 2 of 0.992, a detection range of 0.5 to 10.0 mmol L-1, and an LOD of 0.299 mmol L-1. Calcium quantification using grayscale displayed an R 2 of 0.993, a detection range of 2.0 to 6.0 mmol L-1, and an LOD of 0.595 mmol L-1. Magnesium was best quantified using the hue color space, with an R 2 of 0.999, a detection range of 1.0 to 6.0 mmol L-1, and an LOD of 0.144 mmol L-1. Similarly, ammonium detection using the hue color space had an R 2 of 0.988, a range of 0.5 to 2.5 mmol L-1, and an LOD of 0.170 mmol L-1. This device enhances soil fertility assessment accessibility, supporting PA implementation and higher food production.

The Capture of Cadmium from Solution during the Replacement of Calcite by Apatite

The capture of cadmium (Cd) from phosphate-containing solutions during the replacement of CaCO3 by phosphate phases such as hydroxylapatite (HAP) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) has been studied under high and low temperature and pressure conditions using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy equipped with an X-ray spectrometer and a backscattered electron detector, Raman spectroscopy, and microprobe analysis. Starting with cubes of Carrara Marble (polycrystalline calcite) and single crystals of calcite, a new solid phosphate phase was observed to incorporate Cd from solution, formed under different pressure and temperature conditions tested. Results showed that Cd precipitated in a new phase on the surface of all samples tested. In Carrara Marble, pseudomorphic replacement of CaCO3 is restricted possibly due to kinetic limitation caused by the adsorption of Cd complexes formed in solution at reactive surface sites and the variation of fluid composition inside the sample. However, on the sample surface, this kinetic limitation is less influential, so the new phase could incorporate higher amounts of Cd faster. Furthermore, this reaction at room temperature was found to have similar and/or better Cd-uptake efficiency as HAP and CaCO3 in pure Cd solution through the precipitation of Cd-containing phosphate crystals on the sample surface. Both reactions were able to capture Cd in the precipitating phase structure and could provide a mechanism for simultaneous Cd and phosphate removal from solutions contaminated with both, in industrial or natural settings.

Strengthen sunflowers resilience to cadmium in saline-alkali soil by PGPR-augmented biochar

In the center of the Nile Delta in Egypt, the Kitchener drain as the primary drainage discharges about 1.9 billion m3 per year of water, which comprises agricultural drainage (75 %), domestic water (23 %), and industrial water (2 %), to the Mediterranean Sea. Cadmium (Cd) stands out as a significant contaminant in this drain; therefore, this study aimed to assess the integration of biochar (0, 5, and 10 ton ha-1) and three PGPRs (PGPR-1, PGPR-2, and PGPR-3) to alleviate the negative impacts of Cd on sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) in saline-alkali soil. The treatment of biochar (10 ton ha-1) and PGPR-3 enhanced the soil respiration, dehydrogenase, nitrogenase, and phosphatase activities by 137 %, 129 %, 326 %, and 127 %, while it declined soil electrical conductivity and available Cd content by 31.7 % and 61.3 %. Also, it decreased Cd content in root, shoot, and seed by 55.3 %, 50.7 %, and 92.5 %, and biological concentration and translocation factors by 55 % and 5 %. It also declined the proline, lipid peroxidation, H2O2, and electrolyte leakage contents by 48 %, 94 %, 80 %, and 76 %, whereas increased the catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and polyphenol oxidase activities by 80 %, 79 %, 61 %, and 116 %. Same treatment increased seed and oil yields increased by 76.1 % and 76.2 %. The unique aspect of this research is its investigation into the utilization of biochar in saline-alkali soil conditions, coupled with the combined application of biochar and PGPR to mitigate the adverse effects of Cd contamination on sunflower cultivation in saline-alkali soil.

NtARF11 positively regulates cadmium tolerance in tobacco by inhibiting expression of the nitrate transporter NtNRT1.1

Heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is widespread in contaminated soil and an important factor limiting plant growth. NO3- (nitrate) affects Cd uptake and thus changes Cd tolerance in plants; however, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. Here, we analyzed a novel gene, NtARF11 (auxin response factor), which regulates Cd tolerance in tobacco via the NO3- uptake pathway, through experiments with NtARF11-knockout and NtARF11-overexpression transgenic tobacco lines. NtARF11 was highly expressed under Cd stress in tobacco plants. Under Cd stress, overexpression of NtARF11 enhanced Cd tolerance in tobacco compared to that in wild-type tobacco, as shown by the low Cd concentration, high chlorophyll concentration, and low accumulation of reactive oxygen species in NtARF11-overexpressing tobacco. Moreover, low NO3- concentrations were observed in NtARF11-overexpressing tobacco plants. Further analyses revealed direct binding of NtARF11 to the promoter of the nitrate transporter NtNRT1.1, thereby negatively regulating its expression in tobacco. Notably, NtNRT1.1 knockout reduced NO3- uptake, which resulted in low Cd concentrations in tobacco. Altogether, these results demonstrate that the NtARF11-NtNRT1.1 module functions as a positive regulator of Cd tolerance by reducing the Cd uptake in tobacco, providing new insights for improving Cd tolerance of plants through genetic engineering.

A scoping review on the association between early childhood caries and life on land: The Sustainable Development Goal 15

BACKGROUND

The Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG15) deals with protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managing forests, halting and reversing land degradation, combating desertification and halting biodiversity loss. The purpose of this scoping review was to map the current evidence on the association between SDG 15 and Early Childhood Caries (ECC).

METHODS

This scoping review was reported in accordance with the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Formal literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus in March 2023 using key search terms. Studies with the criteria (in English, with full text available, addressing component of life on land, focusing on dental caries in humans, with results that can be extrapolated to control ECC in children less than 6 years of age) were included. Retrieved papers were summarised and a conceptual framework developed regarding the postulated link between SDG15 and ECC.

RESULTS

Two publications met the inclusion criteria. Both publications were ecological studies relating environmental findings to aggregated health data at the area level. One study concluded that the eco-hydrogeological environment was associated with human health, including caries. The other reported that excessive calcium was associated with the presence of compounds increasing groundwater acidity that had an impact on human health, including caries. The two ecological studies were linked to SDG 15.1. It is also plausible that SDG 15.2 and SDG 15.3 may reduce the risk for food insecurity, unemployment, gender inequality, zoonotic infections, conflict and migration; while SDG 15.4 may improve access to medicinal plants such as anticariogenic chewing sticks and reduction in the consumption of cariogenic diets.

CONCLUSIONS

There are currently no studies to support an association between ECC and SDG15 although there are multiple plausible pathways for such an association that can be explored. There is also the possibility of synergistic actions between the elements of soil, water and air in ways that differentially affect the risk of ECC. Studies on the direct link between the SDG15 and ECC are needed. These studies will require the use of innovative research approaches.

The therapeutic mechanism of Compound Lurong Jiangu Capsule for the treatment of cadmium-induced osteoporosis: network pharmacology and experimental verification

Background

Among bone diseases, osteoporosis-like skeleton, such as trabecular thinning, fracture and so on, is the main pathological change of cadmium-induced osteoporosis(Cd-OP), accompanied by brittle bone and increased fracture rate. However, the mechanism underlying cadmium-induced osteoporosis has remained elusive. Compound Lurong Jiangu Capsule (CLJC) is an experienced formula for the treatment of bone diseases, which has the effect of tonifying kidney and strengthening bones, promoting blood circulation and relieving pain.

Objective

Network pharmacology and molecular docking technology combined with experiments were used to investigate the potential mechanism of CLJC in treating Cd-OP.

Method

The active compounds and corresponding targets of each herb in CLJC were searched in the TCMSP and BATMAN-TCM databases. The DisGeNet, OMIM, and GeneCards databases searched for Cd-OP targets. The relationship between both of them was visualized by establishing an herb-compound-target network using Cytoscape 3.9.1 software. Gene ontology (GO), and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed after determining the intersection of the targets from CLJC and Cd-OP. What's more, molecular docking was performed to validate the results. All of them were aim to obtain hud signaling pathways for further study. Finally, BAX, BCL-2, and CASPASE-3 were screened and selected for further experiments, which included bone imaging and reconstruction analysis (Micro-CT), hematoxylin-eosin Staining (HE), and western blot (WB).

Results

106 common targets from CLJC and Cd-OP targets were identified. KEGG pathway analysis suggested that multiple signaling pathways, such as the pathways in cancer, may play roles in treatment. Verification of the molecular docking was successful. Here we showed that Cd-OP displayed Tb.Th and Tb.N significantly reduced and even broke, irregular proliferation of bone cortex, uneven and loose trabecular bone arrangement, changed in apoptosis-related proteins, such as significant upregulation of CASPASE-3, BAX protein and significant downregulation of BCL-2 protein in vivo, while CLJC rescued these phenotypes.

Conclusion

This study revealed that CLJC can reduce the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, and multiple components and multiple targets inhibit Cd-OP through apoptosis signaling pathway.

Engineered Cyanobacteria-Based Living Materials for Bioremediation of Heavy Metals Both In Vitro and In Vivo

The pollution caused by heavy metals (HMs) represents a global concern due to their serious environmental threat. Photosynthetic cyanobacteria have a natural niche and the ability to remediate HMs such as cadmium. However, their practical application is hindered by a low tolerance to HMs and issues related to recycling. In response to these challenges, this study focuses on the development and evaluation of engineered cyanobacteria-based living materials for HMs bioremediation. Genes encoding phytochelatins (PCSs) and metallothioneins (MTs) were introduced into the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, creating PM/6803. The strain exhibited improved tolerance to multiple HMs and effectively removed a combination of Cd2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+. Using Cd2+ as a representative, PM/6803 achieved a bioremediation rate of approximately 21 μg of Cd2+/OD750 under the given test conditions. To facilitate its controllable application, PM/6803 was encapsulated using sodium alginate-based hydrogels (PM/6803@SA) to create "living materials" with different shapes. This system was feasible, biocompatible, and effective for removing Cd2+ under simulated conditions of zebrafish and mice models. Briefly, in vitro application of PM/6803@SA efficiently rescued zebrafish from polluted water containing Cd2+, while in vivo use of PM/6803@SA significantly decreased the Cd2+ content in mice bodies and restored their active behavior. The study offers feasible strategies for HMs bioremediation using the interesting biomaterials of engineered cyanobacteria both in vitro and in vivo.

Unlocking Cd(II) biosorption potential of Candida tropicalis XTA 1874 for sustainable wastewater treatment

Cd(II) is a potentially toxic heavy metal having carcinogenic activity. It is becoming widespread in the soil and groundwater by various natural and anthropological activities. This is inviting its immediate removal. The present study is aimed at developing a Cd(II) resistant strain isolated from contaminated water body and testing its potency in biological remediation of Cd(II) from aqueous environment. The developed resistant strain was characterized by SEM, FESEM, TEM, EDAX, FT-IR, Raman Spectral, XRD and XPS analysis. The results depict considerable morphological changes had taken place on the cell surface and interaction of Cd(II) with the surface exposed functional groups along with intracellular accumulation. Molecular contribution of critical cell wall component has been evaluated. The developed resistant strain had undergone Cd(II) biosorption study by employing adsorption isotherms and kinetic modeling. Langmuir model best fitted the Cd(II) biosorption data compared to the Freundlich one. Cd(II) biosorption by the strain followed a pseudo second order kinetics. The physical parameters affecting biosorption were also optimized by employing response surface methodology using central composite design. The results depict remarkable removal capacity 75.682 ± 0.002% of Cd(II) by the developed resistant strain from contaminated aqueous medium using 500 ppm of Cd(II). Quantitatively, biosorption for Cd(II) by the newly developed resistant strain has been increased significantly (p < 0.0001) from 4.36 ppm (non-resistant strain) to 378.41 ppm (resistant strain). It has also shown quite effective desorption capacity 87.527 ± 0.023% at the first desorption cycle and can be reused effectively as a successful Cd(II) desorbent up to five cycles. The results suggest that the strain has considerable withstanding capacity of Cd(II) stress and can be employed effectively in the Cd(II) bioremediation from wastewater.

The effects of polystyrene microparticles on the environmental availability and bioavailability of As, Cd and Hg in soil for the land snail Cantareus aspersus

The combined contamination of terrestrial environments by metal(loid)s (MEs) and microplastics (MPs) is a major environmental issue. Once MPs enter soils, they can interact with MEs and modify their environmental availability, environmental bioavailability, and potential toxic effects on biota. Although research efforts have been made to describe the underlying mechanisms driving MP and ME interactions, the effects of MPs on ME bioavailability in terrestrial Mollusca have not yet been documented. To fill this gap, we exposed the terrestrial snail Cantareus aspersus to different combinations of polystyrene (PS) and arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), or mercury (Hg) concentrations. Using kinetic approaches, we then assessed the variations in the environmental availability of As, Cd or Hg after three weeks of equilibration and in the environmental bioavailability of As, Cd or Hg to snails after four weeks of exposure. We showed that while environmental availability was influenced by the total ME concentration, the effects of PS were limited. Although an increase in As availability was observed for the highest exposure concentrations at the beginning of the experiment, the soil ageing processes led to rapid adsorption in the soil regardless of the PS particle concentration. Concerning transfers to snail, ME bioaccumulation was ME concentration-dependent but not modified by the PS concentration in the soils. Nevertheless, the kinetic approaches evidenced an increase in As (2- to 2.6-fold) and Cd (1.6-fold), but not Hg, environmental bioavailability or excretion (2.3- to 3.6-fold for As, 1.8-fold for Cd) at low PS concentrations. However, these impacts were no longer observable at the highest PS exposure concentrations because of the increase in the bioaccessibility of MEs in the snail digestive tract. The generalization of such hormetic responses and the identification of the precise mechanisms involved necessitate further research to deepen our understanding of the MP-mediated behaviour of MEs in co-occurring scenarios.

Neurotoxic effects of low dose ranges of environmental metal mixture in a rat model: The benchmark approach

Metals exert detrimental effects on various systems within the body, including the nervous system. Nevertheless, the dose-response relationship concerning the administration of low doses of metal mixtures remains inadequately explored. The assessment of neurotoxic effects of lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic mixture (MIX) administered at low dose ranges, was conducted using an in vivo approach. A subacute study was conducted on a rat model consisting of a control and five treatment groups subjected to oral exposure with gradually increasing doses (from MIX 1 to MIX 5). The results indicated that behavioural patterns in an already developed nervous system displayed a reduced susceptibility to the metal mixture exposure with tendency of higher doses to alter short term memory. However, the vulnerability of the mature brain to even minimal amounts of the investigated metal mixture was evident, particularly in the context of oxidative stress. Moreover, the study highlights superoxide dismutase's sensitivity as an early-stage neurotoxicity marker, as indicated by dose-dependent induction of oxidative stress in the brain revealed through Benchmark analysis. The narrowest Benchmark Dose Interval (BMDI) for superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (1e-06 - 3.18e-05 mg As/kg b.w./day) indicates that arsenic may dictate the alterations in SOD activity when co-exposed with the other examined metals. The predicted Benchmark doses for oxidative stress parameters were very low, supporting "no-threshold" concept. Histopathological alterations were most severe in the groups treated with higher doses of metal mixture. Similarly, the brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity demonstrated a dose-dependent decrease significant in higher doses, while BMDI suggested Cd as the main contributor in the examined metal mixture. These findings imply varying susceptibility of neurotoxic endpoints to different doses of environmentally relevant metal mixtures, advocating for risk assessment and regulatory measures to address metal pollution and enhance remediation strategies.

Ameliorative potential of eriocitrin against cadmium instigated hepatotoxicity in rats via regulating Nrf2/keap1 pathway

BACKGROUND

Cadmium (Cd) is a hazardous heavy metal that adversely affects the vital body organs particularly liver. Eriocitrin (ERCN) is a plant-based flavonoid that is well-known for its wide range of pharmacological potential. This research trial was aimed to determine the ameliorative potential of ERCN against Cd provoked hepatotoxicity in rats.

METHODOLOGY

Twenty-four rats (Rattus norvegicus) were apportioned into control, Cd treated (5 mg/kg), Cd (5 mg/kg) + ERCN (25 mg/kg) and only ERCN (25 mg/kg) administrated group. Expressions of Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and apoptotic markers were assessed through qRT-PCR. The levels of inflammatory and liver function markers were evaluated by using standard ELISA kits.

KEY FINDINGS

Cd exposure reduced the expression of Nrf2 and anti-oxidant genes as well as the activity of catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GSR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione (GSH) contents while escalating the expression of Keap1. Furthermore, Cd intoxication augmented malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in hepatic tissues. Exposure to Cd resulted in a notable elevation in the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Cd administration upregulated nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels as well as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity. Furthermore, Cd administration upsurged Bax and Caspase-3 expression while reducing the expression of Bcl-2. Moreover, Cd intoxication disrupted the normal architecture of hepatic tissues. However, supplementation of ERCN significantly (p < 0.05) ameliorated the aforementioned disruptions induced by Cd intoxication.

CONCLUSION

ERCN treatment remarkably ameliorated the hepatic tissues owing to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic potentials. These findings underscore the therapeutic potential of ERCN to counteract the adverse effects of environmental pollutants on hepatic tissues.

The impact of heteroaggregation between nZVI and SNPs on the co-transport of Cd(II) in saturated sand columns

This study investigated the co-transport behaviors of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) and Cd(II) in the presence of soil nanoparticles (SNPs) under various SNPs/nZVI mass ratios. It was illustrated that the mobility of colloidal Cd(II) was highly dependent on the nZVI-SNPs heteroaggregation behavior. In the case of 40 mg/L nZVI with SNPs/nZVI mass ratios > 1, the formation of stable SNPs-nZVI heteroaggregates with hydrodynamic diameters (Dh) < 500 nm facilitated the nZVI and colloidal Cd(II) transport at their effluent mass recoveries of 34.76-37.82 % and 9.81-17.17 %, respectively. However, in the case of 100 mg/L nZVI with SNPs/nZVI mass ratios of 0.4-2, the interception of nZVI-SNPs heteroaggregates with Dh > 1500 nm by quartz sands led to almost complete retention of nZVI and colloidal Cd(II) in the columns. Combined with analytical results of zeta potentials and XRD spectrum, it was revealed that the Cd(II) ions could accelerate nZVI corrosion. The positively charged Fe3O4 and γ-FeOOH on corroded nZVI surface could facilitate the heteroaggregation of nZVI-SNPs by the patch-charge attraction, which further reduced the environmental risk of colloidal Cd(II) transport. These findings revealed the important effects of heteroaggregation between nZVI and SNPs on the transport risk of Cd(II) in groundwater.

Impact of cadmium and diclofenac exposure on biochemical responses, transcriptome, gut microflora, and growth performance in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodonidella)

In recent years, the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and diclofenac (DCF) in water have frequently exceeded the standard; however, the toxic effects of these two pollutants on grass carp under single and combined exposure are unknown. In this study, the concentrations of pollutants in different tissues were detected, and the toxicities of the two pollutants to grass carp under different exposure conditions were compared based on growth traits, biochemical responses, gut microbiome, and transcriptomes. Based on these findings, the brain showed the lowest levels of Cd and DCF accumulation. Oxidative stress and pathological damage were observed in the brain and intestines. Changes in the structure and abundance of the gut microflora affect the synthesis of neurotransmitters, such as GABA and steroids. Differentially expressed genes in the brain were enriched in circadian rhythm functions. The expression of PER, CLOCK,1L-1β, 1L-17, and other genes are related to the abundance of Akkermansia, which indicates that the disorder of gut microflora will affect the normal circadian rhythm of the brain. All indices in the recovery group showed an increasing trend. Overall, the toxicity of Cd and DCF showed antagonism, and a single exposure had a stronger effect on gut microorganisms and circadian rhythm, which provided a scientific basis for exploring the comprehensive effects of different pollutants.

The effects of cadmium on selected oxidative stress parameters and the content of photosynthetic pigments in cucumber Cucumis sativus L

BACKGROUND

Environmental pollution by cadmium (Cd) is currently a common problem in many countries, especially in highly industrialised areas. Cd present in the soil can be absorbed by plants through the root system.

AIM

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of cadmium on the metabolic activity of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.) and the accumulation and distribution of Cd in the organs of the plants.

METHODS

Cucumber seeds (3 g) were exposed to 0.76, 1.58 or 4.17 mg Cd/L (applied as CdCl2 solutions). The activity of selected antioxidant enzymes - glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), lipid peroxidation and the content of photosynthetic pigments were determined in 6-week-old cucumber plants. In addition, intake of Cd has been determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS).

RESULTS

The results show that the applied cadmium concentrations affected the activity of antioxidant enzymes. An increase in CAT activity and a decrease in SOD activity were observed in all cucumber organs analysed. GSH-Px activity increased in the roots and stems. Surprisingly, GSH-Px activity decreased in the leaves. The level of lipid peroxidation was usually unchanged (the only one statistically significant change was a decrease in the concentration of malondialdehyde in the leaves which was observed after exposure to the highest Cd concentration). The applied Cd concentrations had no effect on the content of photosynthetic pigments. The highest cadmium content was found in the roots of cucumber plants. Cd tends to accumulate in the roots and a small amount was translocated to the stems and leaves, which was confirmed with the translocation factor (TF).

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicate that the range of cadmium concentrations used, corresponding to the level of environmental pollution recorded in Europe, effectively activates the antioxidant enzyme system, without intensifying lipid peroxidation or reducing the content of photosynthetic pigments.

ZnO Doped Silica Nanoparticles (ZnO@SiO2) for Enhanced Electrochemical Detection of Cd2+ Ions in Real Samples

Pollution by heavy metal ions has a serious impact on human health and the environment, which is why the monitoring of heavy metal ions is of great practical importance. In this work, we describe the development of an electrochemical sensor for the detection of cadmium (Cd2+) involving the doping of porous SiO2 spheres with ZnO nanoparticles. Zinc oxide is chosen as the central dopant in the composite material to increase the conductivity and thus improve the electrochemical detection of Cd2+ ions with the SiO2 spheres. The resulting composite is characterized by electrochemical spectroscopic XRD and microscopic methods. As a result, the developed sensor shows good selectivity towards the targeted Cd2+ ions compared to other divalent ions. After optimization of the experimental conditions, the electrochemical sensor shows two different linear ranges between 2.5 × 10-11 molL-1 to 1.75 × 10-10 molL-1 and 2 × 10-9 molL-1 to 1.75 × 10-9 molL-1, indicating a change from diffusion-controlled to surface-controlled oxidation of Cd2+. A detection limit was reached at 4.4 × 10-11 molL-1. In addition, it offers good repeatability and recovery, and can detect accurate trace amounts of Cd2+ ions in real samples such as tap water or seawater by spiking these samples with known Cd2+ concentrations. This setup also provides satisfactory recovery rates in the range of 89-102%.

Cadmium and ketoprofen accumulation influences aquatic ecosystem demonstrated using in-vivo zebrafish model

The growing concern about pollution and toxicity in aquatic as well as terrestrial organisms is predominantly caused due to waterborne exposure and poses a risk to environmental systems and human health. This study addresses the co-toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) and ketoprofen (KPF), representing heavy metal and pharmaceutical discharge pollutants, respectively, in aquatic ecosystems. A 96-h acute toxicity assessment was conducted using zebrafish embryos. The results indicated that high dosages of KPF (10, 15, and 100 µg/mL) and Cd (10 and 15 µg/mL) reduced survivability and caused concentration-dependent deformities such as scoliosis and yolk sac edema. These findings highlight the potential defects in development and metabolism, as evidenced by hemolysis tests demonstrating dose-dependent effects on blood cell integrity. Furthermore, this study employs adult zebrafish for a 42-day chronic exposure to Cd and KPF (10 and 100 µg/L) alone or combined (10 + 10 and 100 + 100 µg/L) to assess organ-specific Cd and KPF accumulation in tissue samples. Organ-specific accumulation patterns underscore complex interactions impacting respiratory, metabolic, and detoxification functions. Prolonged exposure induces reactive oxygen species formation, compromising antioxidant defense systems. Histological examinations reveal structural changes in gills, gastrointestinal, kidney, and liver tissues, suggesting impairments in respiratory, osmoregulatory, nutritional, and immune functions. This study emphasizes the importance of conducting extensive research on co-toxic effects to assist with environmental risk assessments and safeguard human health and aquatic ecosystems.

Study on Adsorption Characteristics and Water Retention Properties of Attapulgite-Sodium Polyacrylate and Polyacrylamide to Trace Metal Cadmium Ion

The adsorption mechanism of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) can provide theoretical guidance for their practical applications in different environments. However, there has been limited research on the mechanism of attapulgite-sodium polyacrylate. This research aimed to compare the Cd(II) adsorption characteristics and water retention properties of organic-inorganic composite SAP (attapulgite-sodium polyacrylate, OSAP) and organic SAP (polyacrylamide, JSAP). Batch experiments were used to investigate the kinetics of Cd(II) adsorption, as well as the thermodynamic properties and factors influencing these properties. The results show that the Cd(II) adsorption capacity was directly proportional to the pH value. The maximum adsorption capacities of OSAP and JSAP were of 770 and 345 mg·g-1. The Cd(II) adsorption for OSAP and JSAP conformed to the Langmuir and the quasi-second-order kinetic model. This indicates that chemical adsorption is the primary mechanism. The adsorption process was endothermic (ΔH0 > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG0 < 0). The water adsorption ratios of OSAP and SAP were 474.8 and 152.6 in pure water. The ratio decreases with the increase in Cd(II) concentration. OSAP and JSAP retained 67.23% and 38.37% of the initial water adsorption after six iterations of water adsorption. Hence, OSAP is more suitable than JSAP for agricultural and environmental ecological restoration in arid and semi-arid regions.

Application of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles to Mitigate Cadmium Toxicity: Mechanisms and Future Prospects

Cadmium (Cd), as the most prevalent heavy metal contaminant poses serious risks to plants, humans, and the environment. The ubiquity of this toxic metal is continuously increasing due to the rapid discharge of industrial and mining effluents and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a novel strategy to alleviate Cd toxicity. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have become the most important NPs used to mitigate the toxicity of abiotic stresses and improve crop productivity. The plants quickly absorb Cd, which subsequently disrupts plant physiological and biochemical processes and increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes the oxidation of cellular structures and significant growth losses. Besides this, Cd toxicity also disrupts leaf osmotic pressure, nutrient uptake, membrane stability, chlorophyll synthesis, and enzyme activities, leading to a serious reduction in growth and biomass productivity. Though plants possess an excellent defense mechanism to counteract Cd toxicity, this is not enough to counter higher concentrations of Cd toxicity. Applying Zn-NPs has proven to have significant potential in mitigating the toxic effects of Cd. ZnO-NPs improve chlorophyll synthesis, photosynthetic efficiency, membrane stability, nutrient uptake, and gene expression, which can help to counter toxic effects of Cd stress. Additionally, ZnO-NPs also help to reduce Cd absorption and accumulation in plants, and the complex relationship between ZnO-NPs, osmolytes, hormones, and secondary metabolites plays an important role in Cd tolerance. Thus, this review concentrates on exploring the diverse mechanisms by which ZnO nanoparticles can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants. In the end, this review has identified various research gaps that need addressing to ensure the promising future of ZnO-NPs in mitigating Cd toxicity. The findings of this review contribute to gaining a deeper understanding of the role of ZnO-NPs in combating Cd toxicity to promote safer and sustainable crop production by remediating Cd-polluted soils. This also allows for the development of eco-friendly approaches to remediate Cd-polluted soils to improve soil fertility and environmental quality.

Urinary cadmium levels in China (1982-2021): Regional trends and influential factors

Despite the significant threat of cadmium exposure in China, a national-level assessment has been conspicuously absent. This study bridges this critical gap by collecting, geospatial analyzing and multivariable regression analyzing published studies on urinary cadmium levels in Chinese from 1982 to 2021. Our research reveals a notable decline trend in cadmium exposure among Chinese populations. However, this trend varies by region, age and gender group, higher levels are seen in the South (1.04 μg/g cr) compared to the North (0.48 μg/g cr), and in adults (1.08 μg/g cr) relative to children (0.33 μg/g cr), with higher levels being more pronounced in females (6.17 μg/g cr). Urinary cadmium is significantly correlated with rice consumption (P < 0.001), while mining activities have been identified as the dominant factor for cadmium exposure in most regions of China, a trend that is evident both in past decades and is expected to continue into the next decade. These findings underscore the need for region-specific environmental and public health strategies, designed to effectively address the distinct cadmium exposure risks in various regions and among different population groups, thus enhancing protection against the adverse effects of cadmium.

Preparation of porous biochar from fusarium wilt-infected banana straw for remediation of cadmium pollution in water bodies

The problem of cadmium pollution and its control is becoming increasingly severe issue in the world. Banana straw is an abundant bio raw material, but its burning or discarding in field not only causes pollution but also spreads fusarium wilt. The objective of this paper is to utilize biochar derived from the wilt-infected banana straw for remediation of Cd(II) pollution while to eliminate the pathogen. The activity of wilt pathogen in biochar was determined by PDA petri dish test. The Cd(II) adsorption of the biochar was determined by batch adsorption experiments. The effects of KOH concentration (0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 M) on the physicochemical characteristics of the biochar were also observed by BET, SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS. Results showed that pristine banana straw biochar (PBBC) did not harbor any pathogen. The specific surface area (SSA) and Cd(II) adsorption capacity of 0.75 M KOH modified banana straw biochar (MBBC0.75M) were increased by 247.2% and 46.1% compared to that of PBBC, respectively. Cd(II) adsorption by MBBC0.75M was suitable to be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm. After Cd(II) adsorption, the CdCO3 were confirmed by XRD and observed through SEM. The weakness and shift of oxygen-containing functional groups in MBBC0.75M after Cd(II) adsorption implied that those groups were complexed with Cd(II). The results showed that pyrolysis could not only eliminate banana fusarium wilt, but also prepare porous biochar with the wilt-infected banana straw. The porous biochar possessed the potential to adsorb Cd(II) pollutants.

Nano zerovalent Fe did not reduce metal(loid) leaching and ecotoxicity further than conventional Fe grit in contrasting smelter impacted soils: A 1-year field study

The majority of the studies on nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) are conducted at a laboratory-scale, while field-scale evidence is scarce. The objective of this study was to compare the metal(loid) immobilization efficiency of selected Fe-based materials under field conditions for a period of one year. Two contrasting metal(loid) (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) enriched soils from a smelter-contaminated area were amended with sulfidized nZVI (S-nZVI) solely or combined with thermally stabilized sewage sludge and compared to amendment with microscale iron grit. In the soil with higher pH (7.5) and organic matter content (TOC = 12.7 %), the application of amendments resulted in a moderate increase in pH and reduced As, Cd, Pb, and Zn leaching after 1-year, with S-nZVI and sludge combined being the most efficient, followed by iron grit and S-nZVI alone. However, the amendments had adverse impacts on microbial biomass quantity, S-nZVI being the least damaging. In the soil with a lower pH (6.0) and organic matter content (TOC = 2.3 %), the results were mixed; 0.01 M CaCl2 extraction data showed only S-nZVI with sludge as remaining effective in reducing extractable concentrations of metals; on the other hand, Cd and Zn concentrations were increased in the extracted soil pore water solutions, in contrast to the two conventional amendments. Despite that, S-nZVI with sludge enhanced the quantity of microbial biomass in this soil. Additional earthworm avoidance data indicated that they generally avoided soil treated with all Fe-based materials, but the presence of sludge impacted their preferences somewhat. In summary, no significant differences between S-nZVI and iron grit were observed for metal(loid) immobilization, though sludge significantly improved the performance of S-nZVI in terms of soil health indicators. Therefore, this study indicates that S-nZVI amendment of soils alone should be avoided, though further field evidence from a broader range of soils is now required.

Cadmium modulates intestinal Wnt/β-catenin signaling ensuing intestinal barrier disruption and systemic inflammation

The intricate architecture of the intestinal epithelium, crucial for nutrient absorption, is constantly threatened by environmental factors. The epithelium undergoes rapid turnover, which is essential for maintaining homeostasis, under the control of intestinal stem cells (ISCs). The central regulator, Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays a key role in intestinal integrity and turnover. Despite its significance, the impact of environmental factors on this pathway has been largely overlooked. This study, for the first time, investigates the influence of Cd on the intestinal Wnt signaling pathway using a mouse model. In this study, male BALB/c mice were administered an environmentally relevant Cd dose (0.98 mg/kg) through oral gavage to investigate the intestinal disruption and Wnt signaling pathway. Various studies, including histopathology, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, western blotting, ELISA, intestinal permeability assay, and flow cytometry, were conducted to study Cd-induced changes in the intestine. The canonical Wnt signaling pathway experienced significant downregulation as a result of sub-chronic Cd exposure, which caused extensive damage throughout the small intestine. Increased intestinal permeability and a skewed immune response were also observed. To confirm that Wnt signaling downregulation is the key driver of Cd-induced gastrointestinal toxicity, mice were co-exposed to LiCl (a recognized Wnt activator) and Cd. The results clearly showed that the harmful effects of Cd could be reversed, which is strong evidence that Cd mostly damages the intestine through the Wnt/β-catenin signalling axis. In conclusion, this research advances the current understanding of the role of Wnt/β catenin signaling in gastrointestinal toxicity caused by diverse environmental pollutants.

Reducing toxic element leaching in mine tailings with natural zeolite clinoptilolite

The use of natural zeolite clinoptilolite to reduce the leaching rate of potentially toxic elements such as Cd, Pb, and Mn in soil from mine tailings was studied. Soil from the surroundings of the mine El Bote in Zacatecas, Mexico, was analyzed, and the zeolite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and nitrogen physisorption. An ammonium-exchange method for the zeolite was employed. Leaching experiments using packed columns with polluted soil and zeolite mixtures were carried out and the effect of the pH of the carrier solutions was studied. Incorporation of zeolite in the soil achieved a beneficial increase in pH, from 5.03 to 6.95. The concentration of Cd and Mn was reduced when zeolite was present in the column and the ammonium-modified zeolite with ammonia also enhanced the concentration reduction of metallic species in leachates in a range of 28 to 68%. The first-order model best fits the experimental data, suggesting that the leaching rate is controlled by concentration difference between the liquid and the soil matrix. These results demonstrate the potential for using natural zeolite clinoptilolite to reduce the leaching rate of potentially toxic elements in soil from mine tailings.

Recent advances of application of bentonite-based composites in the environmental remediation

Bentonite-based composites have been widely utilized in the removal of various pollutants due to low cost, environmentally friendly, ease-to-operate, whereas the recent advances concerning the application of bentonite-based composites in environmental remediation were not available. Herein, the modification (i.e., acid/alkaline washing, thermal treatment and hybrids) of bentonite was firstly reviewed; Then the recent advances of adsorption of environmental concomitants (e.g., organic (dyes, microplastics, phenolic and other organics) and inorganic pollutants (heavy metals, radionuclides and other inorganic pollutants)) on various bentonite-based composites were summarized in details. Meanwhile, the effect of environmental factors and interaction mechanism between bentonite-based composites and contaminants were also investigated. Finally, the conclusions and prospective of bentonite-based composites in the environmental remediation were proposed. It is demonstrated that various bentonite-based composites exhibited the high adsorption/degradation capacity towards environmental pollutants under the specific conditions. The interaction mechanism involved the mineralization, physical/chemical adsorption, co-precipitation and complexation. This review highlights the effect of different functionalization of bentonite-based composites on their adsorption capacity and interaction mechanism, which is expected to be helpful to environmental scientists for applying bentonite-based composites into practical environmental remediation.

Assessment of natural low molecular weight organic acids in facilitating cadmium phytoextraction by Lepidium didymus (Brassicaceae)

The present study examined the ability of three naturally occurring low molecular weight organic acids (tartaric, TA; citric, CA; and oxalic, OA) to improve the efficiency of cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction in Lepidium didymus L. (Brassicaceae). The plants were grown in soil containing three different concentrations, i.e., 35, 105, and 175 mg kg-1, of total Cd and 10 mM of TA, CA, and OA. After 6 weeks, plant height, dry biomass, photosynthetic traits, and metal accumulation were determined. All three organic chelants significantly increased the Cd accumulation in L. didymus plants; however, the greatest accumulation was seen with TA (TA > OA > CA). In general, Cd accumulation was the highest in the roots, followed by the stems, and the leaves. Highest BCFStem was observed upon the addition of TA (7.02) and CA (5.90) at Cd35, compared to Cd-alone (3.52) treatment. The BCF was the highest in the stem (7.02) and leaves (3.97) under Cd35 treatment supplemented with TA. The BCFRoot in the plants under different chelant treatments were in the following order: Cd35 + TA (~ 100) > Cd35 + OA (~ 84) > Cd35 + TA (~ 83). The stress tolerance index and translocation factor (root-stem) were maximal at Cd175 with TA and OA supplementation, respectively. The study concludes that L. didymus could be a viable option for Cd-remediation projects, and the addition of TA improved its phytoextraction efficiency.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and ecological risk at waste disposal sites: An analysis of sanitary landfills

This study presents an analysis of soil contamination caused by Ni, Zn, Cd, Cu, and Pb at municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, with a focus on ecological risk assessment. The approach aims to assess how different landfill practices and environmental conditions affect soil contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and associated environmental risks. Soil samples were collected from MSW landfills in Poland and the Czech Republic. The research included a comprehensive assessment of PTEs in soils in the context of global environmental regulations. The degree of soil contamination by PTEs was assessed using indices: Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Single Pollution Index (Pi), Nemerow Pollution Index (PN), and Load Capacity of a Pollutant (PLI). The ecological risk was determined using the Risk of PTEs (ERi) and Sum of Individual Potential Risk Factors (ERI). The maximum values of the indicators observed for the Radiowo landfill were as follows: Igeo = 4.04 for Cd, Pi = 24.80 for Cd, PN = 18.22 for Cd, PLI = 2.66, ERi = 744 for Cd, ERI = 771.80. The maximum values of the indicators observed for the Zdounky landfill were as follows: Igeo = 1.04 for Cu, Pi = 3.10 for Cu, PN = 2.52 for Cu, PLI = 0.27, ERi = 25 for Cd, ERI = 41.86. The soils of the tested landfills were considered to be non-saline, with electrical conductivity (EC) values less than 2,000 μS/cm. Varying levels of PTEs were observed, and geostatistical analysis highlighted hotspots indicating pollution sources. Elevated concentrations of Cd in the soil indicated potential ecological risks. Concentrations of Cu and lead Pb were well below the thresholds set by the environmental legislation in several countries. In addition, Ni concentrations in the soils of both landfills indicated that the average levels were within acceptable limits. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed common sources of PTEs. The identification of specific risk points at the Radiowo and Zdounky sites contributes to a better understanding of potential hazards in landfill environments. By establishing buffer zones and implementing regular maintenance programs, emerging environmental problems can be addressed in a timely manner.

Mobility and environmental impact of cadmium (Cd) during weathering of carbonaceous black shales in western Hunan, China

Carbonaceous black shale generally contains high concentration of Cd, with weathering leading to Cd release to environment. In this study, the mobility of Cd during weathering was quantified using geochemical assessment on black shale from western Hunan, China. Results suggested that Cd was heterogeneously distributed in shale profiles with concentrations ranging from 0.16 to 109.9 (mg/kg). Cd distribution was heterogeneous resulting from the parent shale inheritance and the mobility of Cd during weathering. Black shales weathered to a moderate degree with Cd mobility characterized by both enrichment in and release from weathered shales. Cd enrichment in weathered shales resulted from the re-enrichment of Cd in secondary minerals formed during the initial stage of carbonate (and phosphorite) dissolution, and the secondary stage of sulfide oxidation. The release of Cd was caused by decomposition of the secondary Cd-bearing minerals. Cadmium was extensively released during pedogenesis, and Cd release mass flux was estimated to range from 1.26 to 9.50 (g/m2) with a mean of 6.60 g/m2. Thus, black shale weathering may lead to the releasing of large amount of Cd resulting in Cd contamination to local environments.

Predicting cadmium fractions in agricultural soils using proximal sensing techniques

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in agricultural systems has caused global environmental and health concerns. Application of phosphate fertiliser to sustain plant production unintentionally accumulated Cd in agricultural soils over time. Rapid and cost-effective Cd monitoring in these soils will help to inform Cd management practices. Compared to total Cd analysis, examining chemical fractions by sequential extraction methods can provide information on the origin, availability, and mobility of soil Cd, and to assess the potential plant Cd uptake. A total of 87 air-dried topsoil (0-15 cm) samples from pastoral farms with a history of long-term application of phosphate fertiliser were analysed using wet chemistry methods for total Cd and Cd forms in exchangeable, acid soluble, metal oxides bound, organic matter bound, and residual fractions. The data acquired using three proximal sensing techniques, visible-near-infrared (vis-NIR), mid-infrared (MIR), and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectroscopy were used as input for partial least squares regression to develop models predicting total Cd and Cd fractions. The average total Cd concentration was 0.58 mg Cd/kg soil. For total Cd, cross-validation (cv) results of models using individual vis-NIR, MIR, and pXRF data performed with normalised root mean squared error (nRMSEcv) of 26%, 30%, and 31% and concordance correlation coefficient (CCCcv) of 0.85, 0.77, and 0.75, respectively. For exchangeable Cd, model using MIR data performed with nRMSEcv of 40% and CCCcv of 0.57. For acid soluble and organic matter bound Cd, models using vis-NIR data performed with nRMSEcv of 11% and 33% and CCCcv of 0.97 and 0.84, respectively. Reflectance spectroscopy techniques could potentially be applied as complementary tools to estimate total Cd and plant available and potentially available Cd fractions for effective implementation of Cd monitoring programmes.

Size-resolved distribution of trace elements in lysimeter soil solutions under contrasting long-term agricultural management to assess their bioavailability

The chemical species of trace elements (TEs) in agricultural soils is highly variable under diverse conditions, requiring tools with clear resolution and minimal disturbance for exploration. A novel surgical (316L) stainless steel (SS) lysimeter with a 5 μm pore size was developed to collect field soil solutions. The size-resolved distribution of TEs were characterized into total (nitric acid digestion), particulate (0.45-5 μm), dissolved (<0.45 μm), colloidal (1 kDa to 0.45 μm), and mainly ionic (<1 kDa) fractions in the lysimeter soil solutions. Total concentrations of TEs (dry weight basis) in acid digested Gray Luvisolic soils were analyzed. Most TEs in lysimeter soil solutions were present in particulate phases, relevant to their geochemical affinities and occurrences in soil minerals. Among dissolved fractions, As, Ba, Co, Li, Mn, Tl, and V existed as mainly ionic species in the soil solutions. Copper, Pb, Al, Th, and U showed variable associations with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and/or inorganic colloids among agricultural treatments. Inorganic NPKS or NKS fertilizer applications with lower pH (5.25-5.74) enhanced mobility and potential bioavailability of Ba, Co, Li, Mn, and Pb present in mainly ionic species, compared with other locations (pH 5.82-6.37). Manure application exhibited a dual effect, potentially increasing bioavailability for As, Tl, and V due to probably enhanced cation exchange capacity (CEC), while also facilitating specific adsorption of Cu and U on DOM, potentially reducing their bioavailability depending on DOM molecular weight. Colloidal and ionic Al and Th concentrations were higher in forest soils than agricultural soils, with extremely low potential bioavailability of Th attributed to strong precipitation with inorganic colloids and adsorption on DOM. The lysimeter sampling and size fractionation method provided a clear insight into agricultural effects on TE distributions and enhancing understanding of agricultural soil health in terms of TE bioavailability in situ.

Influences of coexisting aged polystyrene microplastics on the ecological and health risks of cadmium in soils: A leachability and oral bioaccessibility based study

Whether coexisting microplastics (MPs) affect the ecological and health risks of cadmium (Cd) in soils is a cutting-edge scientific issue. In this study, four typical Chinese soils were prepared as artificially Cd-contaminated soils with/without aged polystyrene (PS). TCLP and in vitro PBET model were used to determine the leachability (ecological risk) and oral bioaccessibility (human health risk) of soil Cd. The mechanisms by which MPs influence soil Cd were discussed from direct and indirect perspectives. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the leachability of soil Cd with/without aged PS. Additionally, aged PS led to a significant decrease in the bioaccessibility of soil Cd in gastric phase, but not in small intestinal phase. The increase in surface roughness and the new characteristic peaks (e.g., Si-O-Si) of aged PS directly accounted for the change in Cd bioaccessibility. The change in organic matter content indirectly accounted for the exceptional increase in Cd bioaccessibility of black soil with aged PS in small intestinal phase. Furthermore, the changes in cation exchange capacity and Cd mobility factor caused by aged PS explained the change in Cd leachability. These results contribute to a deeper understanding about environmental and public health in complicated emerging scenarios.

Cysteine and thiosulfate promoted cadmium immobilization in strain G303 by the formation of extracellular CdS

Bacteria have evolved a variety of strategies to defend themselves against cadmium toxicity, however, the specific mechanisms involved in the enhancement of bacterial cadmium resistance by sulfur sources are unclear. In this study, a novel cadmium (Cd)-tolerant bacterium, Stenotrophomonas geniculata G303, was isolated from activated sludge. The growth of strain G303 under diverse Cd concentrations was investigated, and the minimum inhibitory concentration of Cd was found to be 1 mM. Strain G303 effectively remove 94.7 % of Cd after 96 h of culture. Extracellular CdS was detected using multiple methods, with the CdS formed being aggregated in the biofilm. The addition of cysteine and thiosulfate to the medium significantly enhanced the Cd resistance and removal capacity of strain G303. Integrated genomic and proteomic analyses revealed that heavy metal transporters cooperate to resist Cd stress. Cysteine and thiosulfate improved Cd tolerance in strain G303 by upregulating nitrogen and energy metabolism. Proteins associated with nitrate reduction likely played a pivotal role in cysteine and thiosulfate metabolism. Notably, cysteine synthase and the SUF system played crucial roles in CdS formation. This study systematically explored the impact of cysteine and thiosulfate on the Cd resistance of strain G303, deepening our understanding of the microbial response mechanism to heavy metals.

Detection of plant cadmium toxicity by monitoring dielectric response of intact root systems on a fine timescale

The root dielectric response was measured on a minute scale to assess its efficiency for monitoring short-term cadmium (Cd) toxicity non-destructively. Electrical capacitance (CR), dissipation factor (DR) and electrical conductance (GR) were detected during the 24 to 168 h after Cd treatment (0, 20, 50 mg Cd2+ kg-1 substrate) in potted maize, cucumber and pea. Stress was also evaluated by measuring leaf chlorophyll content, Fv/Fm and stomatal conductance (gs) in situ, and shoot and root mass and total root length after harvest. CR showed a clear diurnal pattern, reflecting the water uptake rate, and decreased significantly in response to excessive Cd due to impeded root growth, the reduced tissue permittivity caused by accelerated lignification, and root ageing. Cd exposure markedly increased DR, indicating greater conductive energy loss due to oxidative membrane damage and enhanced electrolyte leakage. GR, which was coupled with root hydraulic conductance and varied diurnally, was increased transiently by Cd toxicity due to enhanced membrane permeability, but declined thereafter owing to stress-induced leaf senescence and transpiration loss. The time series of impedance components indicated the comparatively high Cd tolerance of the applied maize and the sensitivity of pea cultivar, which was confirmed by visible shoot symptoms, repeated physiological investigations and biomass measurements. The results demonstrated the potential of single-frequency dielectric measurements to follow certain aspects of the stress response of different species on a fine timescale without plant injury. The approach can be combined with widely used plant physiological methods and could contribute to breeding crop genotypes with improved stress tolerance.
