Abstract
Cancers are causing millions of deaths and leaving a huge clinical and economic burden. High costs of cancer drugs are limiting their access to the growing number of cancer cases. The development of more affordable alternative therapy could reach more patients. As gut microbiota plays a significant role in the development and treatment of cancer, microbiome-targeted therapy has gained more attention in recent years. Dietary and natural compounds can modulate gut microbiota composition while providing broader and more accessible access to medicine. Tea compounds have been shown to have anti-cancer properties as well as modulate the gut microbiota and their related metabolites. However, there is no comprehensive review that focuses on the gut modulatory effects of tea compounds and their impact on reshaping the metabolic profiles, particularly in cancer models. In this review, the effects of different tea compounds on gut microbiota in cancer settings are discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between these modulated bacteria and their related metabolites, along with the mechanisms of how these changes led to cancer intervention are summarized.

Abstract
Although evidence supports an observational association between tea consumption and susceptibility to head and neck cancer, the causal nature of this association remains unclear. We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to determine the causal effects of tea consumption on head and neck cancer. We employed a fixed-effects inverse variance-weighted model for the MR analysis. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for tea consumption were obtained from the UK Biobank Consortium, and GWAS data for head and neck cancer were derived from two data sources and were used as the outcomes. Our MR analysis revealed limited evidence for a causal relationship between various types of tea intake and head and neck cancer. After adjustment for smoking and alcohol consumption, there was no causal relationship between tea consumption and head and neck cancer. Further experimental studies are required to confirm its potential role in these malignancies.

Abstract
Natural products and their analogues have contributed significantly to treatment options, especially for anti-inflammatory and infectious diseases. Thus, the primary objective of this work was to compare the bioactivity profiles of selected medicinal plants that are historically used in folk medicine to treat inflammation and infections in the body. Chemical HPTLC fingerprinting was used to assess antioxidant, phenolic and flavonoid content, while bioassay-guided HPTLC was used to detect compounds with the highest antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. The results of this study showed that green tea leaf, walnut leaf, St. John's wort herb, wild thyme herb, European goldenrod herb, chamomile flower, and immortelle flower extracts were strong radical scavengers. Green tea and nettle extracts were the most active extracts against E. coli, while calendula flower extract showed significant potency against S. aureus. Furthermore, green tea, greater celandine, and fumitory extracts exhibited pronounced potential in suppressing COX-1 activity. The bioactive compounds from the green tea extract, as the most bioactive, were isolated by preparative thin-layer chromatography and characterized with their FTIR spectra. Although earlier studies have related green tea's anti-inflammatory properties to the presence of catechins, particularly epigallocatechin-3-gallate, the FTIR spectrum of the compound from the most intense bioactive zone showed the strongest anti-inflammatory activity can be attributed to amino acids and heterocyclic compounds. As expected, antibacterial activity in extracts was related to fatty acids and monoglycerides.

Abstract
Cancer is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, and conventional cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy often result in undesirable and adverse effects. Natural products have emerged as a promising alternative for cancer treatment, with comparatively fewer side effects reported. Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., a member of the Cactaceae family, contains a diverse array of phytochemicals, including flavonoids, polyphenols, betalains, and tannins, which have been shown to exhibit potent anticancer properties. Various parts of the Opuntia plant, including the fruits, stems/cladodes, and roots, have demonstrated cytotoxic effects against malignant cell lines in numerous studies. This review comprehensively summarizes the anticancer attributes of the phytochemicals found in Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., highlighting their potential as natural cancer prevention and treatment agents. Bibliometric metric analysis of PubMed and Scopus-retrieved data using VOSviewer as well as QDA analysis provide further insights and niche to be explored. Most anticancer studies on Opuntia ficus-indica and its purified metabolites are related to colorectal/colon cancer, followed by melanoma and breast cancer. Very little attention has been paid to leukemia, thyroid, endometrial, liver, and prostate cancer, and it could be considered an opportunity for researchers to explore O. ficus-indica and its metabolites against these cancers. The most notable mechanisms expressed and validated in those studies are apoptosis, cell cycle arrest (G0/G1 and G2/M), Bcl-2 modulation, antiproliferative, oxidative stress-mediated mechanisms, and cytochrome c. We have also observed that cladodes and fruits of O. ficus-indica have been more studied than other plant parts, which again opens the opportunity for the researchers to explore. Further, cell line-based studies dominated, and very few studies were related to animal-based experiments. The Zebrafish model is another platform to explore. However, it seems like more in-depth studies are required to ascertain clinical utility of this biosustainable resource O. ficus-indica.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is no study in the world on the relationship between consuming black and green tea as beverages containing polyphenols and the risk of MS. This study aimed to determine the association between the consumption of green and black tea, coffee, non-alcoholic beer, milk, fruit juices and carbonated beverages with the risk of MS. METHODS AND MATERIALS This case-control study was performed on 150 patients with MS and 300 healthy individuals as a control group among patients who were referred to the ophthalmology ward of a referral hospital in Ahvaz with the groups matching for age. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire including demographic information and beverage consumption. Analysis was performed using univariate and multiple logistic regression models. RESULTS The mean age of patients at the time of diagnosis was 38.55 ± 8.88 years. The results showed that drinking milk (OR = 5.46), natural juice (OR = 2.49), and carbonated beverages (OR = 16.17) were associated with an increased chance of developing MS. However, drinking non-alcoholic beer (OR = 0.48), black tea (OR = 0.20), green tea (OR = 0.29) and coffee (OR = 0.07) were associated with a reduced chance of developing MS. CONCLUSION The results show that drinking black and green tea, non-alcoholic beer, and coffee are associated with a decrease in the chance of developing MS. The results of this study can be used to design interventional research and to change people's lifestyles to prevent MS.

Abstract
Food allergy is recognized as a global medical problem with increasing prevalence in recent years. Currently, the treatment of food allergy mainly involves avoidance of allergens and allergen-specific immunotherapy. Barring the spontaneous resolution of food allergy during the growth process, this disease is difficult to treat fundamentally. In recent years, the use of functional food ingredients derived from natural products has been attracting attention for their prophylactic use in food allergy. Theaflavins, i.e., black tea polyphenols, are potent antioxidants that have inhibitory effects on a variety of diseases. However, little is known about the preventive effect of theaflavins on food allergy. In this study, we designed a mouse model of food allergy and examined the effect of theaflavins using the severity of diarrhea, a symptom of food allergy, as an indicator. The administration of a black tea extract rich in theaflavins or theaflavin 1 (subgroup of theaflavins) to mice reduced the severity of diarrhea when compared with a normal diet. A reduction in malondialdehyde levels, a key marker of lipid peroxidation, was also observed. Overall, these data suggest that theaflavins may potentially inhibit food allergy by alleviating oxidative stress in the colon and can be a potential food material for prevention of food allergy.

Abstract
In recent years, evidence has shown the potential therapeutic effects of different natural compounds for the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy-induced mucositis (RIOM). RIOM represents one of the most frequent side effects associated with anti-neoplastic treatments affecting patients' quality of life and treatment response due to radiation therapy discontinuation. The innate radio-protective ability of natural products obtained from plants is in part due to the numerous antioxidants possessed as a part of their normal secondary metabolic processes. However, oxygen presence is a key point for radiation efficacy on cancer cells. The aim of this review is to describe the most recent evidence on radiation-induced injury and the emerging protective role of natural compounds in preventing and treating this specific damage without compromising treatment efficacy.

Abstract
Rhabdomyolysis induced acute kidney injury (RIAKI) is a life-threatening condition responsible for approximately 19-58% of AKI cases worldwide. We performed an intramuscular injection of glycerol (10 mL/kg) in male wistar rats to induce AKI. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) was administered for 3 consecutive days to evaluate its protective effects. We observed significant downregulation in serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and LDH at different time points on EGCG treatment groups in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, H&E staining also revealed that EGCG was able to reduce the formation of damaged tubules and tubular necrosis which was prominently spread throughout the kidney tissue of glycerol treatment group. Concomitantly, we observed upregulated inflammation, ER stress and elevated oxidative stress in the glycerol treated group only, which was significantly normalized upon EGCG treatment in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The occurrence of apoptosis in kidney tubules was found to be relatively higher in glycerol treated group and H2O2 treated HEK-293 cells. The results obtained after EGCG treatment revealed a significant decrease in apoptotic cell population, which was further validated by immunofluorescence staining against p53 and comet assay in HEK-293 cells and p53 IHC in kidney tissues. Western blotting also revealed a systemic downregulation of intrinsic mitochondrial apoptotic pathway markers such as bax, bcl-2, pro and cleaved caspase 3, caspase 9 and PARP1. Additionally, the results for flow cytometry analysis and TUNEL assay corroborated apoptotic equilibrium. Conclusively, we reckon EGCG as a multi-therapeutic natural product that can be used the for treatment of AKI.

Abstract
Many clinical studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of black tea on cardiovascular diseases. However, the antiplatelet and antithrombotic activities of theaflavin (TF-1) remain unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of TF-1 on platelet activation and thrombosis formation both in vitro and in vivo. Firstly, the in vitro antiplatelet activity of TF-1 was analyzed using platelets isolated from human blood via aggregometry, flow cytometry, the ELISA kit, western blot and fluorescence microscopy. Subsequently, the in vivo analysis of the hemostatic state and thrombosis formation was carried out in C57BL/6 mice based on the tail bleeding time and an FeCl3-induced arterial thrombus model. The results showed that TF-1 could prominently inhibit platelet aggregation in a dose-dependent manner, and attenuate P-selectin expression, fibrinogen binding, spreading and thromboxane A2 (TxA2) formation. Western blot analysis showed that TF-1 potently inhibited spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) and Akt (ser473/474) phosphorylation. The in vivo data further confirmed the inhibition of platelet activation by TF-1 with a prolonged arterial occlusion time (from 15.0 ± 1.1 minutes to 40.0 ± 5.4 minutes). All the results indicated that TF-1 is a powerful inhibitor of platelet activation and thrombosis formation in C57BL/6 mice, and could be developed as a novel food-based inhibitor of thrombotic disorders.

Abstract
利用多壁碳纳米管(MWCNTs)QuEChERS法提取茶叶中拟除虫菊酯类残留农药,采用气相色谱-串联质谱(GC-MS/MS)分析测定,建立了一种灵敏度高、可靠性强的茶叶中农药残留检测方法。比较了单壁碳纳米管(SWCNTs)、MWCNTS、氨基化多壁碳纳米管和石墨烯4种碳纳米材料和其不同用量下的净化效果;采用正交试验设计对前处理最佳实验条件进行筛选,并对实验影响因素进行方差分析。结果表明:提取溶剂、碳纳米材料种类对10种拟除虫菊酯类农药回收率的影响具有极显著统计学差异(p<0.001),提取时间对回收率的影响有统计学差异(p<0.05),碳纳米材料用量对回收率影响不显著(p>0.05);最佳样品前处理条件为以乙腈为提取溶剂,超声提取35 min,净化剂为60 mg MWCNTs、200 mg PSA和200 mg C18。方法学考察表明,10种拟除虫菊酯类农药在0.01~2 mg/L范围内线性良好;检出限(LOD)为0.001~0.01 mg/kg,定量限(LOQ)为0.005~0.04 mg/kg;绿茶样品空白基质加标试验中,10种农药的回收率为91.4%~109.7%,相对标准偏差为0.12%~9.80%(n=6)。对花茶、绿茶、红茶3种茶叶基质进行基质效应(ME)评价,结果发现净化剂中加入MWCNTs在绿茶和红茶基质中能有效降低ME。利用该方法检测了市售120份茶叶中拟除虫菊酯类农药的残留,多个样品中检出目标物,但均未超标。该方法检测灵敏度高,可靠性好,具有良好的回收率和稳定性,能满足茶叶中农药残留快速定量分析的要求。

Abstract
Food contains a complex matrix of various substances, including essential nutrients, non-nutritive substances, and toxins, including metals. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the contribution of major groups of food products to an overall intake of toxic heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, and Ni) using a combination of the 24-dietary recall technique, the ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry) method, and chemometric tools. The obtained results reveal that there is a high potential risk of developing nephrotoxicity through the dietary intake of Pb in the case of both genders. The dietary intake determined for other elements (Cd, Hg, and Ni) was far below the limits established by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) supported analytical determinations and revealed that cereals and vegetables were major contributors to a total intake of Cd (39.6 and 17.4% of the total exposure, respectively), Ni (40.4 and 19.3%), and Hg (16.8 and 19.6%), while water and beverages were major dietary sources of Pb (31% of the total daily intake). In contrast, eggs, fats and oils, and milk and dairy products provided the smallest amounts of Cd, Pb, and Ni. Despite containing high amounts of Hg, considering very low consumption, fish were not found to be an important source of this element.

Abstract
Numerous studies indicate that tea has versatile health benefits, and attempts are being made to use it as a food additive. In this study, three types of tea powder (TP) [matcha tea powder (MTP), green tea powder (GTP), and black tea powder (BTP)] were used in noodle processing, and the cooking properties, antioxidant potential, and volatile profiles of dried tea noodles (DTN) were investigated. Between 0.5% and 2% TP addition decreased the cooking time, cooking loss, and water absorption of DTN, regardless of concentrations. TP decreased the brightness (L*) of the DTN while increasing the greenness (|−a*|) and yellowness (b*) values of matcha tea noodles (MTN) and green tea noodles (GTN), as well as the redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) values of black tea noodles (BTN). The results of the 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity (10.84–95%), 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free scavenging activity (2.03–92.23%), and total phenolic content (TPC) (97.32–540.97 mg/g) of the noodles increased as the TP addition increased. Besides, TP also enriched the flavor of the DTN, with alcohol, aldehydes, and ethers being the main components. In conclusion, the addition of TP positively improved the quality of the DTN and increased its antioxidative potential.

Abstract
The details of incompatibility between aripiprazole (ARIP) oral solution and green tea were examined. When the ARIP oral solution was mixed with a commercial PET bottled green tea beverage, the residual rate of ARIP in the mixed solution decreased to 15.7-17.6%. Mixing with ARIP reduced the content of gallate-type green tea polyphenols (GTPs) in the mixed solution but not the content of non-gallate-type GTPs. Furthermore, using pH 3.0 lactic acid buffer, 2.23 mM ARIP solution and 2.23 mM GTP solution were prepared, and the same volumes of ARIP solution and GTP solution were mixed. When the gallate-type GTP solution was mixed, the residual rate of ARIP in the mixed solution decreased. On the other hand, when the non-gallate-type GTP solution was mixed, the residual rate of ARIP in the mixed solution did not decrease. From the above results, it was found that the main reason for the incompatibility between ARIP oral solution and green tea was the formation of an insoluble substance composed of ARIP and gallate-type GTPs in green tea. Furthermore, experimental results using the continuous variation method revealed that ARIP and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, which is the most representative gallate-type GTP, interact at a molar ratio of 3 : 2.

Abstract
Objective Prospective cohort studies on coffee, tea and caffeine in relation to the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have shown conflicting results. The aim of this study was to conduct a dose–response meta-analysis of cohort studies on the association between dietary caffeine, different types of coffee and tea consumption and the risk of RA. Methods PubMed/Medline, Scopus and EMBASE were searched up to July 2021 to identify relevant studies that had considered different types of coffee (caffeinated or decaffeinated), tea or caffeine exposure with RA as the main, or one of the, outcome(s). Two authors independently screened 742 publications. Finally, five prospective cohort studies were included in our meta-analysis. Pooled relative risks (RRs) were calculated by using a fixed-effects model. We also performed linear and non-linear dose-response analyses to examine the dose-response relations. Results Comparing extreme categories, we found a positive, significant association between coffee (RR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.04–1.62; I2 = 0%, n = 5) and decaffeinated coffee (RR: 1.89; 95% CI: 1.35–2.65; I2 = 38.1%, n =3) consumption and risk of RA. One additional cup of coffee consumed per day was associated with an increased risk of RA by 6% (95% CI: 1.02–1.10; I2 = 0%). This increase in the risk of RA for one cup/d of decaffeinated coffee was 11% (95% CI: 1.05–1.18; I2 = 38). No significant association was observed between caffeinated coffee, tea or caffeine intake and the risk of RA. Conclusion We found that a higher intake of coffee and decaffeinated coffee was associated with increased risk of RA. No significant association between caffeinated coffee, tea or caffeine intake and the risk of RA was observed. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cognitive impairment commonly occurs among older people worldwide. Although the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet was associated with better cognitive function and lower risk of cognitive impairment, it could not be applied to older Chinese due to the traditional dietary characteristics in China. We aimed to develop the Chinese version of the MIND (cMIND) diet and verify its association with cognitive impairment among older Chinese individuals. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS We included a total of 11,245 participants from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study (CLHLS) follow-up survey in 2018. The mean age of the participants at study baseline was 84.06 (±11.46) years. MEASUREMENTS We established the cMIND diet based on current evidence in the diet-cognition field, combined with Chinese dietary characteristics. The verification of its association with cognitive impairment was conducted using the data from the CLHLS follow-up survey. Adherence to the cMIND diet was assessed by the cMIND diet score, which was calculated from a food frequency questionnaire. Cognitive impairment was identified by the Mini-Mental State Examination. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability was defined according to the self-reported performance of eight activities. RESULTS The cMIND diet comprised 11 brain-healthy food groups and 1 unhealthy food group. The median cMIND diet score of all participants was 4.5 (from a total of 12 points) and the prevalence of cognitive impairment was 15.2%. Compared with the lowest tertile, the highest tertile score was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment (odds ratio (OR)=0.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.51-0.72) and IADL disability (OR=0.86, 95% CI: 0.75-0.98) in the full-adjusted model. CONCLUSION We developed the cMIND diet that was suitable for older Chinese individuals, and our results suggested that higher adherence to the cMIND diet was associated with reduced odds of cognitive impairment and IADL disability. In view of the limitations of cross-sectional design in the study, further research is clearly warranted.

Abstract
AbstractThe stability of tea phenolic compounds is influenced by pH value and digestive processes. However, the complex mixture of constituents in tea may modulate the stability of these compounds during digestion. In this study, tea infusions obtained from green, black, and Oolong tea leaves were exposed to in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and the stability of ( +)-catechin, caffeine, (−)-epicatechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), and gallic acid was compared to that of isolated compounds. Changes in antioxidant activity were also evaluated by means of DPPH assay and in a H2O2-induced in vitro oxidative stress model, using Caco-2 cells. The stability of teas antioxidant constituents was different when using teas extract, compared to the reference compound alone, with the total phenolic content being more stable in extracts containing them in higher amount. EGCG degradation correlated well with changes in the DPPH inhibition assay, confirming its pivotal role in the antioxidant activity of tea. Differently, the antioxidant effect in the in vitro cell-based model was much more related to the initial total phenolic content of the extracts, with green tea being more effective than black tea and Oolong tea. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of teas was strongly affected by gastrointestinal digestion. Taken together, these findings suggest a protective role of teas phytocomplex against gastrointestinal digestion of antioxidant constituents. In conclusion, the effect of gastrointestinal digestion on the antioxidant activity of tea should be taken into account, as this may be different from one extract to another and information on the stability of active constituents cannot be extrapolated from data obtained using single compounds.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Herbal beverages have been used as a natural part of the medicinal and food culture in northwestern Argentina. The flower beverages (infusion or decoction) of Acacia caven, Geoffroea decorticans and Larrea divaricata, three native species from arid and semiarid regions of Argentina are widely used as anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic by several local communities. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study was to analyze the phytochemical composition of some Argentine flower beverage and to validate its traditional use as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS Phenolic profiles from all flower infusions and decoctions were analyzed by both spectrophotometric analysis and HPLC-DAD. ABTS•+; the scavenging activity of both hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical was determined and finally, their ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes, such as xanthine oxidase (XOD), and lipoxygenase (LOX) was also assessed. RESULTS The flower beverages of all assayed species showed a high level of phenolic compounds with similar chromatographic patterns in both infusions and decoctions of each plant species, the major components of which have been identified. The flower beverages, especially G. decorticans infusion and decoctions, displayed an important antioxidant activity (SC50 values between 18.14 and 47 μg/mL) through different mechanisms; all of them were able to inhibit the XOD enzyme activity and, consequently, the formation of uric acid and reactive oxygen species, the primary cause of arthritis-related diseases. The most active beverages as XOD inhibitor were G. decorticans flower infusion and decoctions (IC50 values of 20 and 35 μg/mL, respectively). Pro-inflammatory enzymes, such as LOX, were also inhibited by infusions and decoctions of G. decorticans, L. cuneifolia and A caven flowers, lessening inflammation mediators in all beverages. CONCLUSIONS The present work validates the traditional medicinal use of flower beverages from Argentina as an anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory agent as it has been used for hundreds of years in several pathologies associated with oxidative stress.

Abstract
(1) Background: The way tobacco and tea spread among virgin populations is of major interest our understanding of how ancient economic and cultural practices could have influenced current habits. (2) Methods: hair concentrations of theobromine, theophylline, caffeine, nicotine, and cotinine were measured in hair samples from 47 frozen bodies of people from eastern Siberia, dated from the contact with Europeans to the assimilation of people into Russian society. (3) Results: hair concentration of theobromine, theophylline, and caffeine vary with the type of beverage consumed: green, black, or local herbal teas. Shortly after the first contacts, a few heavy consumers of tobacco were found among light or passive consumers. Tobacco-related co-morbidities began to be recorded one century after and heavy tea users were only found from the 19th century (4) Conclusions: Economic factors and social and family contacts seem to have played a decisive role in tobacco consumption very early on. Behavioral evolution governed the process of substance integration into Siberian culture and was a determinant for the continuity of its use across long periods of time. Analyzing the respective contributions of social and economic processes in the use of these substances opens avenues of investigation for today’s public health.

Abstract
Catechins are a part of the chemical family of flavonoids, a naturally occurring antioxidant, and a secondary metabolite in certain plants. Green tea catechins are well recognized for their essential anti-inflammatory, photo-protective, antioxidant, and chemo-preventive functions. Ultraviolet radiation is a principal cause of damage to the skin. Studies observed that regular intake of green tea catechins increased the minimal dose of radiation required to induce erythema. The objectives of this systematic review and meta-analysis are to determine the effectiveness of green tea catechins in cutaneous erythema and elucidate whether green tea catechin consumption protects against erythema (sunburn) inflammation. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify the relevant studies. Two researchers carried out independent screening, data extraction, and quality assessment according to the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). The pooled effect of green tea catechins on protection against erythema was assessed using approaches fixed-effects or random-effects model to quantify the effectiveness of green tea catechins in the erythema dose-response. Studies not be included in meta-analyses were summarized narratively. Six randomized controlled studies of enrolled studies regularly administrated green tea catechins orally for 6 to 12 weeks involving healthy volunteers comprising a total of 100 participants were included in the analysis. The results revealed green tea catechins have favorable protection against erythema inflammation even at increased minimal erythema dose (MED) of ultraviolet radiation. Meta-analysis results confirm oral supplementation of green tea catechins is highly effective at low-intensity ultraviolet radiation-induced erythema response (MED range; 1.25-1.30) compared to placebo, showing a significant pooling difference (p = 0.002) in erythema index (SMD: -0.35; 95% CI, -0.57 to -0.13; I2 = 4%, p = 0.40) in the random-effects model. The pro-inflammatory signaling pathways through oral supplementation with green tea catechins are an attractive strategy for photo-protection in healthy human subjects and could represent a complementary approach to topical sunscreens. Therefore, studies that involved green tea catechin in topical applications to human subjects were also evaluated separately, and their meta-analysis is presented as a reference. The evidence indicates that regular green tea catechin supplementation is associated with protection against UV-induced damage due to erythema inflammation.

Abstract
Bioaccessibility of trace elements (Li, Be, Ti, Ga, Cu, Ag, Hg, Cd, Cs, Pt, Tl, Pb, As, Cr, Co, Ni, V, Se, Sn and Sb) and major elements (Rb, Ba, Al, Fe, Zn, Si, Ca, Mg, Mn, Mo, Sr, P and K) in tea infusions has been assessed using an in vitro dialyzability protocol. Gastric simulation (using pepsin solution) and intestinal simulation (using pancreatin and bile salts) were used to perform the in vitro digestion. ICP-MS, ICP-OES and FAES were used for elements determination in digested tea leaves, their infusions and the dialyzate fractions from tea infusions. Microwaves assisted acid digestion was used for the total element determination in tea leaves, while tea infusions were prepared by brewing tea leaves for 5 min in boiling water. The LODs for elements determined in tea leaves were in the range of 0.11-656 ng g-1 and 0.02-145.6 μg g-1 for trace and major elements, respectively. For elements' determination in tea infusions, the LODs were ranged between 0.23 and 399.9 ng L-1 for trace elements and 0.2-1248 μg L-1 for major elements. The LODs for the elements in the dialyzable fraction varied from 0.018 to 142 μg L-1. The accuracy of the total element determination was evaluated using certified reference materials (Tea Leaves INCT-TL-1 and Rye Grass). The analytical recoveries were also assessed for analyzed elements in digested tea leaves (95-114%) and their infusions (92-115%), showing good recoveries. Among the studied elements, K was the most abundant element in tea leaves and tea infusions in almost all samples, followed by Ca, Mg, and P. Zn, Cs, and K showed the highest dialyzability percentages up to 84%, 76%, and 54%, respectively, followed by Si and Ca and K that show moderate to high dialyzability percentages. The accuracy of the dialysis process was evaluated using a mass-balance study.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the feasibility of identifying multiple chemical constituents in matcha using visible-near infrared hyperspectral imaging (VNIR-HSI) technology. Regions of interest (ROIs) were first defined in order to calculate the representative mean spectrum of each sample. Subsequently, the standard normal variate (SNV) method was applied to correct the characteristic spectra. Competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and bootstrapping soft shrinkage (BOSS) were used to optimize the models. They were built based on partial least squares (PLS), creating two models referred to as CARS-PLS and BOSS-PLS. The BOSS-PLS models achieved best predictive accuracy, with coefficients of determination predicted to be 0.8077 for caffeine, 0.7098 for tea polyphenols (TPs), 0.7942 for free amino acids (FAAs), 0.8314 for the ratio of TPs to FAAs, and 0.8473 for chlorophyll. These findings highlight the potential of VNIR-HSI technology as a rapid and nondestructive alternative for simultaneous quantification of chemical constituents in matcha.

Abstract
Black tea accounts for 70-80% of world tea production, and the polyphenols therein are produced by enzymatic oxidation of four tea catechins during tea fermentation. However, only limited groups of dimeric oxidation products, such as theaflavins, theasinensins, and theacitrins, have been isolated from black tea and chemically characterized. This is largely because of the complexity and heterogeneity of the oxidation products. To determine structures and production mechanisms of uncharacterized black tea polyphenols, in vitro model fermentation experiments using pure catechins and polyphenol oxidase have been applied, and basic oxidation mechanisms have been established. Contemporary methods, such as LC-MS, are also effective to identify catechin oxidation products in black tea. Despite ongoing efforts, almost 60% of the solids in black tea infusion remain uncharacterized. These compounds include the so-called thearubigins, which are a heterogeneous mixture of uncharacterized catechin oxidation products with oligomeric structures. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the production mechanisms of representative black tea polyphenols and presents recent progress in characterization of thearubigins.

Abstract
Mexico has a great diversity of cacti, however, many of their fruits have not been studied in greater depth. Several bioactive compounds available in cacti juices extract have demonstrated nutraceutical properties. Two cactus species are interesting for their biologically active pigments, which are chico (Pachycereus weberi (J. M. Coult.) Backeb)) and jiotilla (Escontria chiotilla (Weber) Rose)). Hence, the goal of this work was to evaluate the bioactive compounds, i.e., betalains, total phenolic, vitamin C, antioxidant, and mineral content in the extract of the above-mentioned P. weberi and E. chiotilla. Then, clarified extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity (cancer cell lines) potentialities. Based on the obtained results, Chico fruit extract was found to be a good source of vitamin C (27.19 ± 1.95 mg L-Ascorbic acid/100 g fresh sample). Moreover, chico extract resulted in a high concentration of micronutrients, i.e., potassium (517.75 ± 16.78 mg/100 g) and zinc (2.46 ± 0.65 mg/100 g). On the other hand, Jiotilla has a high content of biologically active pigment, i.e., betaxanthins (4.17 ± 0.35 mg/g dry sample). The antioxidant activities of clarified extracts of chico and jiotilla were 80.01 ± 5.10 and 280.88 ± 7.62 mg/100 g fresh sample (DPPH method), respectively. From the cytotoxicity perspective against cancer cell lines, i.e., CaCo-2, MCF-7, HepG2, and PC-3, the clarified extracts of chico showed cytotoxicity (%cell viability) in CaCo-2 (49.7 ± 0.01%) and MCF-7 (45.56 ± 0.05%). A normal fibroblast cell line (NIH/3T3) was used, as a control, for comparison purposes. While jiotilla extract had cytotoxicity against HepG2 (47.31 ± 0.03%) and PC-3 (53.65 ± 0.04%). These results demonstrated that Chico and jiotilla are excellent resources of biologically active constituents with nutraceuticals potentialities.

Abstract
Hypoxia is a common pathological process in various clinical diseases. However, there is still a lack of effective anti-hypoxia active substances. Agaricus bitorguis (Quél.) Sacc Chaidam (ABSC) is a rare wild edible macrofungus that grows underground at high altitudes. Herein, intracellular phenolic acids-rich fractions (IPA) were extracted from ABSC ZJU-CDMA-12, and the structural characterization and anti-hypoxia activity of IPA on PC12 cells were elucidated as well. The results of HPLC-Q-TOF-MS illustrated that five kinds of IPA were isolated from ABSC, including (−)-epicatechin gallate, arabelline, yunnaneic acid D, 2′-O-p-hydroxybenzoyl-6′-O-trans-caffeoylgardoside,4′-O-methylgallocatechin-(4->8)-4′-O-methylepigallocatechin. IPA extracted from ABSC proved to show anti-hypoxia activity on hypoxia-damaged PC12 cells. Hypoxia enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) in PC12 cells, resulting in the inhibition of survival and induction of apoptosis in PC12 cells. Measurements of 100 μg/mL and 250 μg/mL IPA could significantly reduce hypoxia-induced damage in PC12 cells by decreasing overproduced intracellular ROS, improving ΔΨm, and reducing cell apoptosis rate. Our findings indicated that the IPA from ABSC potentially could be used as novel bioactive components applied to anti-hypoxia functional foods or medicines.

Abstract
Green tea is a popularly consumed beverage worldwide and contains polyphenols, whose antioxidant activities could improve sperm parameters and fertility thereof. We investigated the effect of green tea on the male rat reproductive system as well as its safety. Male Wistar rats were administered 2 and 5% aqueous extract of green tea for 52 days’ ad libitum, while the control group received tap water. Total polyphenol, flavanol, flavonol and soluble solids significantly increased in a concentration-dependent manner in vitro (P < 0.01). Weights of body, testis, epididymis, prostate gland, seminal vesicles, and liver, serum levels of testosterone, ferric reducing antioxidant power, creatinine, and sperm motility, remained unchanged (P > 0.05). Kidney weight, sperm concentration and vitality, spontaneous acrosome reaction increased (P < 0.05), while alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase levels decreased (P < 0.05). Catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione and lipid peroxidation remained unchanged in the testes, liver and kidney (P > 0.05). Histological sections of testis, epididymis, kidney and liver showed no conspicuous alteration. Diameter and epithelial height of seminiferous tubule decreased, while caudal epididymis epithelial height increased (P < 0.01). Consumption of green tea in the conditions used in the present study seems to be safe and improved sperm parameters. However, subtle structural changes observed in the decreased diameter and epithelial height of the seminiferous tubule and increased acrosome reaction needs further investigation.

Abstract
L-theanine (γ-Glutamylethylamide) is a nonprotein water soluble amino acid (AA) mostly found in leaves of Camellia sinensis (green tea). This is a key component of green tea and is considered as the most abundant form of total AAs in green tea (i.e., about 50%). L-theanine is an exclusive taste ingredient of tea producing an attractive flavor and aroma in tea. It has biological effects such as antioxidant, growth promoter, immune booster, anti-stresser, hepatoprotective, antitumor, antiaging, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antianxiety activities that are worth noticing. It could reduce the oxidative impairment by reducing the synthesis of reactive oxygen species, oxidative parameters, and lipid damage as well as increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The oral ingestion of L-theanine enhanced γδ T-cell proliferation. Therefore, it is being considered an essential compound of green tea that has the ability to improve immune function. The L-theanine can be used as a potential treatment for hepatic injury and immune-related liver diseases via the downregulation of the inflammatory response through the initiation of nitric oxide synthesis and glutathione production which are likely to be critical for the control of hepatic diseases as well as for the improvement of immune function. In addition, it could be used as a best natural feed additive with a potent antistressor by decreasing the levels of corticosterone, dopamine, and noradrenaline. After systematically reviewing the literature, it is noticed that most studies were carried out on mice, pig, human, and butterfly; while dietary supplementation studies of L-theanine in animal and poultry especially among broilers are very limited because of less awareness of this AA. So, the aim of this review is to encourage the veterinarian and poultry researchers to conduct more research at the molecular level about this AA to expose its more beneficial effects and its mechanism of absorption for potential use of this unique green tea AA in poultry nutrition.

Abstract
Green tea contains a variety of biologically active constituents that are widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Among them, simple catechins constitute a major group of compounds that is primarily responsible for the high biologic activity of green tea extracts. Therefore, the application of optimized extraction conditions may result in obtaining high value extracts. The main purpose of the study was to compare the content of polyphenols, mainly catechins, and the antioxidant activity of green tea extracts obtained by three different extraction methods: simple maceration, ultrasound extraction and accelerated solvent extraction using six various solvent systems. The quality of the extracts was evaluated by LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS methodologies and spectrophotometric determinations. The obtained results revealed that catechins' extraction efficiency was identical for the three techniques studied. However, larger quantitative differences among the samples were observed when using different solvents. The total content of major catechins and gallic acid was within a very wide range of 10.2-842 mg/L. Ethyl acetate was by far the least effective extractant, regardless of the extraction technique used. After all, the solvent system composed of ethanol:water (1:1 v/v) was proven to be the best to recover catechins and to deliver extracts with the highest antiradical activity.

Abstract
This randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover, and double-blind trial aimed to examine the possible effects of four weeks L-theanine administration on stress-related symptoms and cognitive functions in healthy adults. Participants were 30 individuals (nine men and 21 women; age: 48.3 ± 11.9 years) who had no major psychiatric illness. L-theanine (200 mg/day) or placebo tablets were randomly and blindly assigned for four-week administration. For stress-related symptoms, Self-rating Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores decreased after L-theanine administration (p = 0.019, 0.006, and 0.013, respectively). The PSQI subscale scores for sleep latency, sleep disturbance, and use of sleep medication reduced after L-theanine administration, compared to the placebo administration (all p < 0.05). For cognitive functions, verbal fluency and executive function scores improved after L-theanine administration (p = 0.001 and 0.031, respectively). Stratified analyses revealed that scores for verbal fluency (p = 0.002), especially letter fluency (p = 0.002), increased after L-theanine administration, compared to the placebo administration, in individuals who were sub-grouped into the lower half by the median split based on the mean pretreatment scores. Our findings suggest that L-theanine has the potential to promote mental health in the general population with stress-related ailments and cognitive impairments.

Abstract
Flavonoids, one of the most abundant phytochemicals in a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, have been recognized as possessing anti-proliferative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic activities. Numerous cellular and animal-based studies show that flavonoids can function as antioxidants by preventing DNA damage and scavenging reactive oxygen radicals, inhibiting formation of DNA adducts, enhancing DNA repair, interfering with chemical damage by induction of Phase II enzymes, and modifying signaling pathways. Recent evidence also shows their ability to regulate the immune system. However, findings from clinical trials have been mixed with no clear consensus on dose, frequency, or type of flavonoids best suited to elicit many of the beneficial effects. Delivery of these bioactive compounds to their biological targets through "targeted designed" food processing strategies is critical to reach effective concentration in vivo. Thus, the identification of novel approaches that optimize flavonoid bioavailability is essential for their successful clinical application. In this review, we discuss the relevance of increasing flavonoid bioavailability, by agricultural engineering and "targeted food design" in the context of the immune system and cancer.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TP) is the main functional substances in tea. It has been reported that TP can modulate the composition of gut microbes in the human body, in addition, after the bio-transformation by intestinal flora, the metabolites of TP also have positive effects on the health of the host. Lots of researches have shown that TP have possible therapeutic effect against high fat diet induced obesity, which is closely related to the gut flora of the host. Therefore, this review focused on the interactions of TP with intestinal microbiota and their implication for cellular signal conditioning mechanism that will enable us to better study the two-way effects of TP and intestinal microbiota on host health improvement. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: TP have been widely concerned for their health care properties. As the functional food components, TP have strong antioxidant and physiological activities for human body. A better understanding on the interactions of TP with intestinal microbiota and their implication for cellular signal conditioning mechanism will lead us to better evaluate the contribution of the microbial metabolites of TP, as well as the regulation of intestinal bacterial diversity and abundance for host health.

Abstract
Background Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer affecting women worldwide. Paclitaxel/Carboplatin is one of the most commonly prescribed regimens in cervical cancer treatment. Although chemotherapeutic drugs are very effective, severe side effects and development of drug resistance limits the use of these drugs. The use of natural products with anticancer activity may help to partially overcome these issues. Methods In the present study, we investigated the ability of Gallic acid, to potentiate the anti-cancer effects of Paclitaxel, Carboplatin and Paclitaxel/Carboplatin combination in human HeLa cells by performing MTT assay, cell cycle analysis and RT-PCR assay and Western blotting for some apoptotic markers. Results Our results revealed that the highest cytotoxic effect, the highest induction of apoptosis and significant elevation in P53 and Caspase 3 levels was seen in Paclitaxel/Gallic acid combination. Conclusion These results indicate that Gallic acid potentiates Paclitaxel effect and that Paclitaxel/Gallic acid combination could represent a promising alternative with lower side effects-for Paclitaxel/Carboplatin combination in treatment of cervical cancer treatment.

Abstract
Post-fermented tea (dark tea) is produced from enzyme-inactivated fresh tea leaves by microbial fermentation. Batabata tea and Awaban tea are two major dark teas fermented under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. However, how their chemical compositions and functionalities change during different post-fermentation processes remains unclear. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based analyses showed that (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (-)-epicatechin (EC) decreased in Batabata tea during post-fermentation with aerobic molds. In contrast, EGC and EC increased, and pyrogallol was produced in Awaban tea during post-fermentation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The anti-glycation activities of two dark teas were investigated using an in vitro assay system with human serum albumin (HSA). The anti-glycation activity decreased in Batabata tea, but it was retained in Awaban tea during post-fermentation. Our results showed that post-fermentation with LAB was an efficient way to enhance phenol content and that pyrogallol contributed to anti-glycation activity of Awaban tea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiotherapy is a mainstay of cancer treatment since decades. Ionizing radiation (IR) is used for destruction of cancer cells and shrinkage of tumors. However, the increase of radioresistance in cancer cells and radiation toxicity to normal tissues are severe concerns. The exposure to radiation generates intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), which leads to DNA damage by lipid peroxidation, removal of thiol groups from cellular and membrane proteins, strand breaks and base alterations. HYPOTHESIS Plants have to deal with radiation-induced damage (UV-light of sun, other natural radiation sources). Therefore, it is worth speculating that radioprotective mechanisms have evolved during evolution of life. We hypothesize that natural products from plants may also protect from radiation damage caused as adverse side effects of cancer radiotherapy. METHODS The basis of this systematic review, we searched the relevant literature in the PubMed database. RESULTS Flavonoids, such as genistein, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, epicatechin, apigenin and silibinin mainly act as antioxidant, free radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory compounds, thus, providing cytoprotection in addition to downregulation of several pro-inflammatory cytokines. Comparable effects have been found in phenylpropanoids, especially caffeic acid phenylethylester, curcumin, thymol and zingerone. Besides, resveratrol and quercetin are the most important cytoprotective polyphenols. Their radioprotective effects are mediated by a wide range of mechanisms mainly leading to direct or indirect reduction of cellular stress. Ascorbic acid is broadly used as antioxidant, but it has also shown activity in reducing cellular damage after irradiation mainly due to its antioxidant capabilities. The metal ion chelator, gallic acid, represents another natural product attenuating cellular damage caused by radiation. CONCLUSIONS Some secondary metabolites from plants reveal radioprotective features against cellular damage caused by irradiation. These results warrant further analysis to develop phytochemicals as radioprotectors for clinical use.

Abstract
Green tea infusions are one of the most popular beverages consumed across the world, especially is Asian countries. Green tea quality is primarily based on catechin content, however, the concentration of elements could also significantly influence its biological properties and thus quality and safety. The main purpose of the present study was the evaluation of catechin, antioxidant activity and metal content (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Cd and Ni) in different green tea types cultivated in Japan, Sri Lanka, South Korea, India, China and Japan. The chemical analysis of samples was performed using LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS for organic constituents and atomic absorption spectrometry (flame and electrothermal) method for inorganic ones. The obtained results were subjected to chemometric elaboration. EGC (213 mg/100 mL of the tea infusion in South Korean Jeoncha) and EGCG (124 mg/100 mL in Japanese Sencha) were the dominant catechins in all green tea samples. Chinese and Indian green tea samples contained the highest concentration of toxic heavy metals, however these values were far below appropriate limitations for green teas. PCA revealed significant similarities between Japanese samples and Korean Jeoncha. In general the latter one was evaluated to have the best quality based on the investigated parameters.

Abstract
In this study, submerged fermentation mode for preparing instant dark tea production was developed through utilizing industrial low grade green tea as raw material and Aspergillus niger as fermentation microbe starter. The fermentation parameters (inoculum size, liquid-solid ratio and rotation speed) were optimized by using Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology (RSM) with desirability function, the theabrownins content, redness and turbidity value as responses. The optimal conditions were set as follow: inoculum size of 5.3% (v/v), liquid-solid ratio of 27.78 mL/g, and rotation speed of 182 r/min. The optimized conditions model showed a good correlation between the predicted and experimental values. Further, the optimum product of instant dark was achieved in a 3-L laboratory fermenter, and the main parameters of product were theabrownins content of 140.92 g/kg and redness value of 40.78 and turbidity of 90.98 NTU. Sensory evaluation showed that the instant dark tea infusion approached mellow mouthfeel, an aroma of mint and a good overall acceptance.

Abstract
Intoroduction: Dietary intake fundamentally provides reintegration of energy and essential nutrients to human organisms. However, its qualitative and quantitative composition strongly affects individual’s health, possibly being either a preventive or a risk factor. It was shown that nutritional status resulting from long-term exposition to specific diet formulations can outstandingly reduce incidences of most common and most important diseases of the developed world, such as cardiovascular and neoplastic diseases. Diet formulations result from different food combinations which bring specific nutrient molecules. Numerous molecules, mostly but not exclusively from vegetal foods, have been characterized among nutritional components as being particularly responsible for diet capabilities to exert risk reduction. These “bioactive nutrients” are able to produce effects which go beyond basic reintegration tasks, i.e. energetic and/or structural, but are specifically pharmacologically active within pathophysiological pathways related to many diseases, being able to selectively affect processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, differentiation, angiogenesis, DNA repair and carcinogens activation. Conclusion: The present review was aimed to know the molecular mechanisms and pathways of activity of bioactive molecules; which will firstly allow search for optimal food composition and intake, and then use them as possible therapeutical targets and/or diagnostics. Also, the present review discussed the therapeutic effect of both nutrients and phytochemicals.

Abstract
A comprehensive study on the composition and antioxidant properties of black tea samples with a chemometric approach was performed via LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS, DPPH radical scavenging assay, and Folin-Ciocalteu assay (TPC). Marked differences between the teas from seven different countries (China, India, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Nepal, Sri Lanka) were shown. The Indian samples demonstrated the highest total catechin content (184.8 mg/100 mL), the largest TPC and DPPH scavenging potential (58.2 mg/100 mL and 84.5%, respectively). The applied principal component analysis (PCA) and ANOVA revealed several correlations between the level of catechins in tea infusions. EC (epicatechin), ECG (epicatechin gallate), EGC (epigallocatechin), and EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) content was not correlated with DPPH, gallic acid, and TPC; however, a strong correlation of EC and ECG between themselves and a negative correlation of these two catechins with EGCG and EGC was noted. Interestingly, simple catechins were not found to be responsible for antioxidant properties of the black teas. The samples collected in the higher altitudes were similar.

Abstract
Tea is one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverages consumed worldwide. Numerous bioactive constituents of tea were confirmed to possess healthy benefits via the mechanisms of regulating gene expressions or protein activities. However, a complete interacting profile between tea bioactive compounds (TBCs) and their target genes is lacking, which put an obstacle in the study of healthy function of tea. To fill this gap, we developed a database of target genes of TBCs (TBC2target, http://camellia.ahau.edu.cn/TBC2target) based on a pharmacophore mapping approach. In TBC2target, 6,226 interactions between 240 TBCs and 673 target genes were documented. TBC2target contains detailed information about each interacting entry, such as TBC, CAS number, PubChem CID, source of compound (e.g., green, black), compound type, target gene(s) of TBC, gene symbol, gene ID, ENSEMBL ID, PDB ID, TBC bioactivity and the reference. Using the TBC-target associations, we constructed a bipartite network and provided users the global network and local sub-network visualization and topological analyses. The entire database is free for online browsing, searching and downloading. In addition, TBC2target provides a BLAST search function to facilitate use of the database. The particular strengths of TBC2target are the inclusion of the comprehensive TBC-target interactions, and the capacity to visualize and analyze the interacting networks, which may help uncovering the beneficial effects of tea on human health as a central resource in tea health community.
