Abstract
Byproducts and wastes from the food processing industry represent an important group of wastes generated annually in large quantities. It is important to note that the amount of this waste will increase with industrialization, and effective solutions must be found urgently. Many wastes that cause environmental pollution are evaluated by their low-tech conversion into products with little economic value, such as animal feed and fertilizer. Therefore, the evaluation of food processing waste using effective recycling techniques has become an interesting subject with increasing population, ongoing biotechnological studies, and advances in technology. The conversion of food waste into biotechnological products via fermentation is a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and economical method in line with the principles of green chemistry. This approach promotes the reuse of food waste by supporting the principles of a circular economy and offers sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals. This contributes to reducing the carbon footprint, preserving soil and water quality, and providing economic sustainability through the production of high-value products. In this study, the properties of olive mill wastewater, an important and valuable waste in the olive oil industry, its environmental aspects, and its use in biotechnological applications that integrate green chemistry are evaluated.

Abstract
Lipase has high economic importance and is widely used in biodiesel, food, detergents, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. The rapid development of synthetic biology and system biology has not only paved the way for comprehensively understanding the efficient operation mechanism of Aspergillus niger cell factories but also introduced a new technological system for creating and optimizing high-efficiency A. niger cell factories. In this review, all relevant data on microbial lipase enzyme sources and general properties are gathered and updated. The relationship between A. niger strain morphology and protein production is discussed. The safety of A. niger strain is investigated to ensure product safety. The biotechnologies and factors influencing lipase expression in A. niger are summarized. This review focuses on various strategies to improve lipase expression in A. niger. The summary of these methods and the application of the gene editing technology CRISPR/Cas9 system can further improve the efficiency of constructing the engineered lipase-producing A. niger.

Growth Potential of Selected Yeast Strains Cultivated on Xylose-Based Media Mimicking Lignocellulosic Wastewater Streams: High Production of Microbial Lipids by Rhodosporidium toruloides. Abstract
The potential of Rhodosporidium toruloides, Candida oleophila, Metschnikowia pulcherima, and Cryptococcus curvatus species to produce single-cell-oil (SCO) and other valuable metabolites on low-cost media, based on commercial-type xylose, was investigated. Rhodosporidium strains were further evaluated in shake-flasks using different lignosulphonate (LS) concentrations, in media mimicking waste streams derived from the paper and pulp industry. Increasing the LS concentration up to 40 g/L resulted in enhanced dry cell weight (DCW) while SCO production increased up to ~5.0 g/L when R. toruloides NRRL Y-27012 and DSM 4444 were employed. The intra-cellular polysaccharide production ranged from 0.9 to 2.3 g/L in all fermentations. Subsequent fed-batch bioreactor experiments with R. toruloides NRRL Y-27012 using 20 g/L of LS and xylose, led to SCO production of 17.0 g/L with maximum lipids in DCW (YL/X) = 57.0% w/w. The fatty acid (FA) profile in cellular lipids showed that oleic (50.3–63.4% w/w) and palmitic acid (23.9–31.0%) were the major FAs. Only SCO from batch trials of R. toruloides strains contained α-linolenic acid. Media that was supplemented with various LS concentrations enhanced the unsaturation profile of SCO from R. toruloides NRRL Y-27012. SCO from R. toruloides strains could replace plant-based commodity oils in oleochemical-operations and/or it could be micro- and nano-encapsulated into novel food-based formulas offering healthier food-products.

Abstract
In this study, olive oil mill wastewater (OOMW), an important waste in the Mediterranean basin, was evaluated to produce bacterial cellulose (BC). For this purpose, the effects of different ratios of OOMW fractions (25–100%) and some additional nutrients (yeast extract, peptone and Hestrin-Schramm medium (HS) components) on BC productions were investigated. Unsupplemented OOMW medium (75% and 100%) yielded as much as BC obtained in HS medium (0.65 g/L), while enrichment of OOMW medium (%100) with yeast extract (5 g/L) and peptone (5 g/L) increased the amount of BC by 5.5 times, reaching to 5.33 g/L. In addition, produced BCs were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD and SEM analyses. BC from OOMW medium (100% OOMW with supplementation) has a high thermal decomposition temperature (316.8°C), whereas it has lower crystallinity index (57%). According to the FT-IR analysis, it was observed that the components of OOMW might be absorbed by BCs. Thus, higher yield productions of BCs from OOMW media compared to BC obtained from HS medium indicate that olive oil industry wastes can be integrated into BC production for industrial applications.

Abstract
The present work was conducted to investigate the immobilization of lipase from Penicillium sp. onto three modified bentonites by simple adsorption and crosslinking methods. The composites were characterized by FTIR, SEM and BET. The free and bentonite-supported lipase was evaluated in terms of operational and storage stability and pH and thermal activity and stability. The kinetic parameters were also evaluated. The results show that all immobilized enzymes had better thermal and pH stability compared to free enzymes. Among the immobilized enzymes, GDU-bent-lipase had more efficient performance in thermal (38% of its initial activity within 24 h at 65 °C), operational (70% residual activity after 9 cycles), storage stability (70.14% of its initial activities at 4 °C for 21 days), and kinetic properties (effectiveness factor 0.79 relative to free enzyme) than free and other immobilized enzymes. The adsorption isotherm was modeled by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms which Langmuir isotherm indicated a better fit of the experimental adsorption data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparative report about the immobilization of lipase Produced by Penicillium sp., isolated from olive mill wastewater, and the most comprehensive study about the immobilization of lipase onto several supports.

Abstract
The present study investigated the valorization of oil-rich residues of
coconut oil mill effluent (COME) as a potential growth medium for the
microbial production of extracellular lipase. The bacterial species isolated
from oil mill effluent, Acinetobacter sp. KSPE71 was tested for its
efficiency to grow and produce lipase in undiluted COME and 0.2 % yeast
extract and 0.2 % NH4Cl sup-plemented COME. In this connection, the process
parameters such as pH, temperature, agitation speed, and inoculum size were
optimized to maximize the production using a central composite design in the
Response surface methodology. At the optimized state of pH 7.5, 35 ?C, 150
rpm with 0.6 % inoculum size, a maximum of 3.95 U mL-1 activity was
obtained, four-fold higher than the basal condition. At this stage, 73 % of
the lipid content was degraded. The present work results imply that the oil
mill effluent can be used as a cheaper production medium for lipase and the
new isolate Acinetobacter sp. KSPE71 as a potential lipase producer. The
degradation of oil waste along with the production of the valuable product
has multiple advantages of cost reduction of lipase and environmental
concern.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the presence of lipases in twenty fungal strains of the genus Penicillium using an efficient and low-cost method with a view to an application in the treatment of cooking oil residues. The Paranaense rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, making it the most likely site to find new fungal strains with lipolytic potential. The objective of this study was to determine the lipolytic potential and the isoenzyme profile of fungi belonging to the Penicillium genus isolated from the Paranaense rainforest. Seven fungal strains were selected using qualitative screening. Quantitative analysis revealed that the isolate Penicillium sp. LBM 088 was the best producer of lipase, reaching 1224 U mL-1 of lipolytic activity. Zymogram gels of the seven selected strains showed different enzymatic profiles: In general, the molecular mass of proteins varied from 26 to 42 kDa. Also, proteins from fungi grown on olive oil showed a higher variation in their molecular mass than proteins from fungi grown without the oil. The search for new lipase-secreting organisms should lead to the exploitation of biodiversity in the region.

Abstract
The main goal of this paper was to assess the ability of a combination of Candida boidinii and Bacillus pumilus to remove phenol in table olive processing water, as a function of some variables, like temperature, pH, a dilution of waste and the order of inoculation of the two microorganisms. At this purpose C. boidinii and B. pumilus were sequentially inoculated in two types of table olive processing water (fresh wastewater, FTOPW and wastewater stored for 3 months-aged wastewater, ATOPW). pH (6 and 9), temperature (10 and 35 °C) and dilution ratio (0, 1:1) were combined through a 2k fractional design. Data were modeled using two different approaches: Multifactorial Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and multiple regression. A higher removal yield was achieved by inoculating B. pumilus prior to the yeast (192 vs. 127 mg/L); moreover, an increased efficiency was gained at 35 °C (mean removal of 200 mg/L). The use of two statistic approach suggested a different weight of variables; temperature was a global variable, that is a factor able to affect the yield of the process in all conditions. On the other hand, an alkaline pH could increase the removal of phenol at 10 °C (25-43%).

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of by-product molasses and waste orange peels (WOP) as the nutrient medium on lipase production with Rhizopus arrhizus NRRL 2286 and investigate the inductive effect of waste cooking oil (WCO) on activity. The results showed that the highest specific growth rate and the maximum biomass concentration were obtained 0.424 h-1 and 3.83 g dry weight/L for 70 g/L WOP, respectively. Additionally, the highest intracellular and extracellular lipase activities were attained in 50 g/L WOP as 400 U/g and 13.2 U/mL, correspondingly. Next, the inductive effects of WCO and olive oil were tested in lipase production. Intracellular lipase activity enhanced and reached a maximum of 520 U/g in the presence of 10 g/L WCO with an increase of 30% compared to the one without WCO. However, both inducers caused a diminish in extracellular lipase hydrolysis activity. Overall, this study reveals that the lipase production of R. arrhizus can be accomplished using WOP and WCO with the optimum conditions.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMW), which is generated during olive oil production, has detrimental effects on the environment due to its high organic load and phenolic compounds content. OMW is difficult to biodegrade, but represents a valuable resource of nutrients for microbial growth. In this study, yeast strains were screened for their growth on phenolic compounds usually found in OMW and responsible for antimicrobial effects. Candida tropicalis ATCC 750 demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to grow in phenolics and was chosen for further experiments with OMW-based medium. The effects of nitrogen supplementation, the pH, and the stirring rate on cellular growth, OMW-components consumption, and added-value compounds production were studied in batch cultures in Erlenmeyer flasks and in a bioreactor. Candida tropicalis was able to reduce 68% of the organic load (chemical oxygen demand) and 39% of the total phenols of OMW in optimized conditions in bioreactor experiments, producing lipase (203 U·L−1) and protease (1105 U·L−1). Moreover, intracellular lipids were accumulated, most significantly under nitrogen-limited conditions, which is common in this type of wastewater. The high potential of C. tropicalis to detoxify OMW and produce added-value compounds from it makes this process an alternative approach to other conventional processes of OMW treatment.

Abstract
It is well known that the lack of an effective treatment of tuna wash processing wastewater may pose substantial environmental and public health hazards. The present work investigates the performance of biological treatment of tuna wash processing wastewater (TWPW) by using Yarrowia lipolytica. Under optimized experimental conditions (pH "6.40-6.50" and 29 °C), Y. lipolytica reduced the pollution level of the crude and the diluted TWPW after only 7 days of incubation. The Yarrowia treatment leaded to a reduction of 66% chemical oxygen demand, 69.8% total organic carbon, 66% salinity, and phosphorus total (100%) removal of the crude TWPW, while the treated-diluted TWPW revealed significant reductions in chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon (75% and 74%, respectively), as well as salinity (68%). Interestingly, a total removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the diluted TWPW was obtained. Under high salinity, an important Y. lipolytica biomass of 5 g L-1 is produced with high levels of lipids and protein contents at around 336 ± 12.2 mg g-1 and 302.15 ± 5.44 mg g-1, respectively. The phytotoxicity assessment of the treated TWPW on fenugreek seeds shows promising results, which reveals the good performance of Yarrowia treatment in reducing the toxicity of this wastewater.

Abstract
The potential use of alternative culture media towards the development of a sustainable bioprocess to produce lipases by Diutina rugosa is clearly demonstrated. First, a synthetic medium containing glucose, peptone, yeast extract, oleic acid, and ammonium sulfate was proposed, with lipase activity of 143 U/L. Then, alternative culture media formulated with agro-industrial residues, such as molasses, corn steep liquor (CSL), and olive mill waste (OMW), were investigated. An experimental design was conducted, and only CSL concentration was found to have a positive effect in lipase production. The highest lipase activity (561 U/L) was produced on a mixture of molasses (5 g/L), CSL (6 g/L), OMW (0.5% v/v), 0.5 g/L of ammonium sulfate, and 3 g/L of peptone at 24 h of cultivation. Lipase production was also carried out in a 1-L bioreactor leading to a slightly higher lipase activity at 24 h of cultivation. The semi-purified enzyme exhibits an optimum temperature and pH of 40 °C and 7.0, respectively. Finally, the media cost per unit of lipase produced (UPC) was influenced by the medium components, specially by the inducer used. The lowest UPC was obtained when the agro-industrial residues were combined and used at the improved concentrations.

Abstract
Olive oil mills represent an important sector in the Mediterranean Sea Basin but also an environmental hazard due to untreated wastewater. Recovery of nutrients from olive oil mill wastewater (OMWW) as protein-rich microbial biomass can produce novel feed and reduce its chemical oxygen demand; however, low-protein containing products have been reported. New strategies leading to higher protein-containing fungal biomass could renew the research interest on bioconversion for pollution mitigation of OMWW. In this work, through cultivation of edible filamentous fungi (Aspergillus oryzae, Neurospora intermedia, and Rhizopus delemar), a link between the protein content in the originated fungal biomass, and the addition of nitrogen and medium dilution was established. Addition of nitrogen in the form of NaNO3 reduced the cultivation time from 96 h to 48 h while achieving a similar biomass mass concentration of 8.43 g/L and increased biomass protein content, from w = 15.9% to w = 29.5%. Nitrogen addition and dilution of OMWW, and consequent reduction of suspended solids, led to an increase in the protein content to up to w = 44.9%. To the best of our knowledge, the protein contents achieved are the highest reported to date and can open new research avenues towards bioconversion of OMWW using edible filamentous fungi.

Abstract
Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) are amphiphilic compounds with wide range of applications such as emulsifiers, solubility agents, and chiral building blocks. These compounds are currently produced by chemical approaches involving alkaline glycerolysis or esterification under high temperatures and pressure, resulting in low yields and with by-products. Lipase-catalyzed processes have been alternative tools to provide more ecological approaches since MAGs can be obtained under milder reaction conditions and with higher selectivity. However, just a few papers have been explored the potential of endophytic fungi as lipase sources. In this work we summarized the screening of lipolytic activity of endophytic fungus S. lycopersici and Sordaria spp isolated from vegetal species collected in Jurubatiba Sandbank National Park, RJ, Brazil, as well as its applications as biocatalysts on the lipase-catalyzed synthesis of solketal 1-MAG derivatives. As a result, the crude enzymatic extract of S. lycopersici showed 98 U/mL and 110 U/mL of hydrolytic activity after 72 h and 96 h, respectively, against 74 U/mL (96 h) and, 86 U/mL (120 h) expressed by enzymatic extract of Sordaria spp.. Concerning the esterification activity, both crude enzymatic extracts and lyophilized fungi showed about 80 % conversion into ethyl oleate, in 100 min. On solketal derived 1-MAG synthesis, S. lycopersici both lyophilized and immobilized in polyurethane (PU) forms showed more than 75 % of conversion in the presence and absence of organic solvents. On MAG recycle assays, the PU biocatalyst could be reused after five reaction cycles while for the ethyl oleate synthesis, PU biocatalyst could be reused after six reaction cycles. Both microorganisms, immobilized in polyurethane, were successfully applied as biocatalysts in esterification reactions for solketal 1-MAG derivative production, in a solvent-free media.

Abstract
Six yeast strains belonging to Rhodosporidium toruloides, Lipomyces starkeyi, Rhodotorula glutinis and Cryptococcus curvatus were shake-flask cultured on xylose (initial sugar—S0 = 70 ± 10 g/L) under nitrogen-limited conditions. C. curvatus ATCC 20509 and L. starkeyi DSM 70296 were further cultured in media where process waters were partially replaced by the phenol-containing olive mill wastewaters (OMWs). In flasks with S0 ≈ 100 g/L and OMWs added yielding to initial phenolic compounds concentration (PCC0) between 0.0 g/L (blank experiment) and 2.0 g/L, C. curvatus presented maximum total dry cell weight—TDCWmax ≈ 27 g/L, in all cases. The more the PCC0 increased, the fewer lipids were produced. In OMW-enriched media with PCC0 ≈ 1.2 g/L, TDCW = 20.9 g/L containing ≈ 40% w/w of lipids was recorded. In L. starkeyi cultures, when PCC0 ≈ 2.0 g/L, TDCW ≈ 25 g/L was synthesized, whereas lipids in TDCW = 24–28% w/w, similar to the experiments without OMWs, were recorded. Non-negligible dephenolization and species-dependent decolorization of the wastewater occurred. A batch-bioreactor trial by C. curvatus only with xylose (S0 ≈ 110 g/L) was performed and TDCW = 35.1 g/L (lipids in TDCW = 44.3% w/w) was produced. Yeast total lipids were composed of oleic and palmitic and to lesser extent linoleic and stearic acids. C. curvatus lipids were mainly composed of nonpolar fractions (i.e., triacylglycerols).

Abstract
The effect of macro and micronutrients of media components on lipase production by Bacillus sp. VITL8 was investigated using classical as well as statistical methods. Initially, the carbon source, nitrogen source, inducer and metal ions that affect lipase production were selected using the classical approach. Subsequently, selected nutrients along with other key factors (such as pH, agitation rate, gum acacia and tween 80) were investigated using Placket Burman design. Finally, three significant factors, viz., olive oil, peptone and tween 80 were studied using a 22 full factorial central composite design. Under optimized condition [6% (v/v) of olive oil, 0.7% peptone, 0.9% tween 80 and 25 h of incubation], the enzyme production was found to be 2.2 times higher with an overall enzyme production of 325.0 ± 1.4 U mL-1. Laboratory scale experiment proved that the enzyme could be utilized for pretreatment of food industry effluent rich in fat and oil (dairy, bakery and poultry). The enzyme was capable of hydrolyzing more than 50% of the initial fat present in all these effluents and enabled the reduction in the levels of biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the effluent samples. The study thus reveals the utility of the lipase produced by the halotolerant bacterium Bacillus sp. Abstract
One of the major environmental problems is the highly toxic agro-industrial waste called olive mill wastewater (OMW), deriving from olive oil production. On the other hand, the continuous development of the biological liquid fuel industry (biodiesel and bioethanol) makes it mandatory the process and exploitation of their main by-products, crude glycerol. This study dealt with the biotechnological conversions of biodiesel-derived crude glycerol with the use of the non-conventional yeast Yarrowia lipolytica in media that had been diluted with OMWs. OMWs, employed as simultaneous liquid medium and substrate, is a new trend recently appearing in Industrial Biotechnology, where value-added metabolites could be produced with simultaneous partial detoxification (i.e. decolorization and phenol removal) of the used residue. In the present study, diluted OMWs (containing 2.0 g/L of total phenolic compounds) blended with 70.0 g/L crude glycerol were employed as substrates. Production of value-added compounds by Y. lipolytica strain ACA-YC 5031 was studied in nitrogen-limited media favoring the production of secondary metabolites (i.e. citric acid, polyols, microbial lipids, polysaccharides). Batch-flask cultures were carried out and the impact of the addition of different NaCl concentrations (1.0%, 3.0%, 5.0% w/w) added upon the biochemical behavior of the strain was studied. Remarkable biomass production was observed in all trials, while in the “blank” experiment (no OMWs and no salt added), the metabolism was shifted toward the synthesis of polyols (Σpolyols = mannitol + arabitol + erythritol > 20 g/L and maximum total citric acid-Cit (sum of citric and isocitric acid) = 10.5 g/L). Addition of OMWs resulted in Citmax = 32.7 g/L, while Σpolyols concentration dropped to <15 g/L. Addition of salt in the OMW-based media slightly reduced the produced biomass, while Cit production drastically increased, reaching a final value of 54.0 g/L (conversion yield of Cit produced per unit of glycerol consumed = 0.82 g/g) in the trial with addition of 5.0% NaCl. Finally, significant color and phenols removal were observed, evaluating the yeast as a decontamination medium for the OMW and a great candidate for the production of value-added compounds.

Abstract
Background:Lipases have various commercial applications and microorganisms serve as a potential source of production.Objective:The aim of this paper was to study the effect of interactions among different production parameters on lipase yield ofAspergillus fumigatus.Method:Plackett Burman and Central Composite Design (CCD) were established by using Design Expert software 10.0.Results:In the present study, interactions were studied for six different variables such as inoculum size, pH, temperature, galactose concentration, peptone concentration and incubation time. In Plackett-Burman design, galactose concentration, peptone concentration, pH and incubation time were found to be important factors. Using the statistical approach, the optimum factors were found to be as: galactose concentration (1.5%), peptone concentration (1.8%), pH (10.0) and incubation time (72 h) at 45°C under response surface curves. Upon statistical analysis, the coefficient of determination (R2) obtained was 0.9318 which showed that the model was significant.Conclusion:The statistical tools used predicted the optimal conditions for the production of the lipase. The optimized parameters were galactose concentration 1.5%, peptone concentration 1.4%, temperature 45°C, pH 10.0 and incubation time of 72 h for obtaining a maximum lipase activity of 6.22 U/ml.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewaters (OMW) are the major effluent deriving from olive oil production and are considered as one of the most challenging agro-industrial wastes to treat. Crude glycerol is the main by-product of alcoholic beverage and oleochemical production activities including biodiesel production. The tremendous quantities of glycerol produced worldwide represent a serious environmental challenge. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of Yarrowia lipolytica strain ACA-DC 5029 to grow on nitrogen-limited submerged shake-flask cultures, in crude glycerol and OMW blends as well as in media with high initial glycerol concentration and produce biomass, cellular lipids, citric acid and polyols. The rationale of using such blends was the dilution of concentrated glycerol by OMW to (partially or fully) replace process tap water with a wastewater stream. The strain presented satisfactory growth in blends; citric acid production was not affected by OMW addition (Citmax~37.0 g/L, YCit/Glol~0.55 g/g) and microbial oil accumulation raised proportionally to OMW addition (Lmax~2.0 g/L, YL/X~20% w/w). Partial removal of color (~30%) and phenolic compounds (~10% w/w) of the blended media occurred. In media with high glycerol concentration, a shift towards erythritol production was noted (Erymax~66.0 g/L, YEry/Glol~0.39 g/g) simultaneously with high amounts of produced citric acid (Citmax~79.0 g/L, YCit/Glol~0.46 g/g). Fatty acid analysis of microbial lipids demonstrated that OMW addition in blended media and in excess carbon media with high glycerol concentration favored oleic acid production.

Abstract
Dibenz(a,h)Anthracene (DBahA), classified as a probable human carcinogen (B2) is the first Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) to be chemically purified and used for cancer-based studies. Till date, only 30 papers focus on the bioremediation aspects of DBahA out of more than 200 research publications for each of the other 15 priority PAHs. Thus, the review raises an alarm and calls for efficient bioremediation strategies for considerable elimination of this compound from the environment. This article reviews and segregates the available papers on DBahA bioremoval from the beginning till date into bacteria, fungi and plant-mediated remediation and offers suggestions for the most competent and cost-effective modes to bioremove DBahA from the environment. One of the proficient ways to get rid of this PAH could with the use of biosurfactant-enriched bacterial consortium in DBahA polluted environment, which is given considerable importance here. Among the bacterial and fungal microbiomes, unquestionably the former are the beneficiaries which utilize the breakdown products of this PAH metabolized by the latter. Nevertheless, the use of plant communities for efficient DBahA utilization through fibrous root system is also discussed at length. The current status of DBahA as reflected by the publications at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov and recommendations among the explored groups [bacterial/fungal/plant communities] for better DBahA elimination are pointed out. Finally, the review emphasizes the pros and cons of all the methodologies used for selective/combinatorial removal of DBahA and present the domain to the researchers to carry forward by incorporating their individual ideas.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) is a major problem in olive oil - producing countries, due to its high organic load and concentration in phenols that are toxic for marine life, plants and soil microorganisms. In the present study, two mushroom species were tested in regard to their OMWW's oxidative capacity, Pleurotus citrinopileatus LGAM 28684 and Irpex lacteus LGAM 238. OMWW (25% v/v) degradation was investigated for several culture conditions, namely pH, agitation speed, nitrogen-based supplements and their concentration. The selected values were pH 6, agitation rate 150 rpm, 30 g L-1 corn steep liquor as nitrogen source for P. citrinopileatus and 20 g L-1 diammonium tartrate for I. lacteus. The two strains performed well in cultures supplemented with OMWW, generating very high titers of oxidative enzymes and achieving more than 90% color and phenols reduction within a 24 days cultivation period. In addition, the amount of glucans present in the fungal biomass was assessed. Hence, P. citrinopileatus and I. lacteus appear as potent degraders of OMWW with the ability to use the effluent as a substrate for the production of biotechnologically important enzymes and valuable fungal glucans.

Abstract
Yarrowia lipolytica ACA-YC 5033 was grown on glucose-based media in which high amounts of olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) had been added. Besides shake-flask aseptic cultures, trials were also performed in previously pasteurized media while batch bioreactor experiments were also done. Significant decolorization (∼58%) and remarkable removal of phenolic compounds (∼51% w/w) occurred, with the latter being amongst the highest ones reported in the international literature, as far as yeasts were concerned during their growth on phenol-containing media. In nitrogen-limited flask fermentations the microorganism produced maximum citric acid quantity ≈19.0 g/L [simultaneous yield of citric acid produced per unit of glucose consumed (YCit/Glc)≈0.74 g/g]. Dry cell weight (DCW) values decreased at high phenol-containing media, but, on the other hand, the addition of OMWs induced reserve lipid accumulation. Maximum citric acid concentration achieved (≈52.0 g/L; YCit/Glc≈0.64 g/g) occurred in OMW-based high sugar content media (initial glucose added at ≈80.0 g/L). The bioprocess was successfully simulated by a modified logistic growth equation. A satisfactory fitting on the experimental data occurred while the optimized parameter values were found to be similar to those experimentally measured. Finally, a non-aseptic (previously pasteurized) trial was performed and its comparison with the equivalent aseptic experiment revealed no significant differences. Yarrowia lipolytica hence can be considered as a satisfactory candidate for simultaneous OMWs bioremediation and the production of added-value compounds useful for the food industry.

Abstract
A Plackett–Burman Factorial Design of 16 experiments was conducted to assess the influence of nine factors on the production of lipases by filamentous fungi. The factors investigated were bran type (used as the main carbon source), nitrogen source, nitrogen source concentration, inducer, inducer concentration, fungal strain (Aspergillus niger or Aspergillus flavus were selected as good lipase producers via submerged fermentation), pH and agitation. The concentration of the yeast extract and soybean oil and the pH had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on lipase production and were consecutively studied through a Full Factorial Design 23, with the concentration of yeast extract and pH being significant (p < 0.05). These variables were optimized using a central composite design, obtaining maximum lipolytic activities with the use of 45 g/L of yeast extract and pH 7.15. The statistical model showed a 94.12% correlation with the experimental data.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of Amano PS commercial lipase - Burkholderia cepacia and lipase produced by Burkholderia cepacia strain ATCC 25416, in addition to studying the hydrolysis of agro-industrial effluent collected in a fried potato industry. The optimum temperature for increasing lipase activity was 37 °C. The temperature increase caused a decrease in thermostability of lipase, and the commercial lipase was less stable, with values of 10.5, 4.6 and 4.9%, respectively, lower than those obtained by lipase from strain ATCC 25416, at temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C. The enzymatic activity was higher in alkaline conditions, achieving better results at pH 8.0. The pH was the variable that most influenced the hydrolysis of triacylglycerides of the agro-industrial effluent, followed by enzyme concentration, and volume of gum arabic used in the reaction medium. Thus, it can be observed that the enzymatic hydrolytic process of the studied effluent presents a premising contribution to reduction of environmental impacts of potato chip processing industries.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMW), a liquid by-product of the olive oil industry, represents a severe environmental problem owing to its high pollution load. In this study, successive columns containing different types of natural materials were investigated for their OMW treatment efficiency. Passing OMW through three columns of gravel, fine sand, and a mixture of acidified cotton and zeolite (weight:weight ratio of cotton:clinoptilolite of 2:1), followed by treatment with activated charcoal (AC) and lime, was the best treatment in terms of the quality of water obtained. This treatment decreased concentrations of [Formula: see text] , B, K, P, and total fat in OMW by mean percentages of 78.0, 92.4, 66.6, 48.3, and 93.3%, respectively. Furthermore, it decreased OMW turbidity and electric conductivity (EC) by 96.8 and 48.4%, respectively. Most contaminants were removed from the OMW in the cotton/clinoptilolite column owing to the high sorption affinity of clinoptilolite on its active sites. The AC was efficient for organic particle removal; meanwhile, lime was used to raise the pH of the treated OMW (TOMW) from 2.9 to 5.1. This simple method enables us to obtain environmentally friendly TOMW that can be safely used for irrigation.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMW) constitutes a major cause of environmental pollution in olive-oil producing regions. Sixty wood-rot macrofungi assigned in 43 species were evaluated for their efficacy to colonize solidified OMW media at initially established optimal growth temperatures. Subsequently eight strains of the following species were qualified: Abortiporus biennis, Ganoderma carnosum, Hapalopilus croceus, Hericium erinaceus, Irpex lacteus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Pleurotus djamor, and P. pulmonarius. Fungal growth in OMW (25%v/v in water) resulted in marked reduction of total phenolic content, which was significantly correlated with the effluent's decolorization. A. biennis was the best performing strain (it decreased phenolics by 92% and color by 64%) followed by P. djamor and I. lacteus. Increase of plant seeds germination was less pronounced evidencing that phenolics are only partly responsible for OMW's phytotoxicity. Laccase production was highly correlated with all three biodegradation parameters for H. croceus, Ph. chrysosporium, and Pleurotus spp., and so were manganese-independent and manganese dependent peroxidases for A. biennis and I. lacteus. Monitoring of enzymes with respect to biomass production indicated that Pleurotus spp., H. croceus, and Ph. chrysosporium shared common patterns for all three activities. Moreover, generation of enzymes at the early biodegradation stages enhanced the efficiency of OMW treatment.

Abstract
A protein extract containing a plant lipase from oleaginous seeds of Pachira aquatica was tested using soybean oil, wastewater from a poultry processing plant, and beef fat particles as substrate. The hydrolysis experiments were carried out at a temperature of 40°C, an incubation time of 90 minutes, and pH 8.0-9.0. The enzyme had the best stability at pH 9.0 and showed good stability in the alkaline range. It was found that P. aquatica lipase was stable in the presence of some commercial laundry detergent formulations, and it retained full activity up to 0.35% in hydrogen peroxide, despite losing activity at higher concentrations. Concerning wastewater, the lipase increased free fatty acids release by 7.4 times and promoted the hydrolysis of approximately 10% of the fats, suggesting that it could be included in a pretreatment stage, especially for vegetable oil degradation.

Abstract
Olive mill wastes (OMWs) are high-strength organic effluents, which upon disposal can degrade soil and water quality, negatively affecting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The main purpose of this review paper is to provide an up-to-date knowledge concerning the microbial communities identified over the past 20 years in olive mill wastes using both culture-dependent and independent approaches. A database survey of 16S rRNA gene sequences (585 records in total) obtained from olive mill waste environments revealed the dominance of members of Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. Independent studies confirmed that OMW microbial communities' structure is cultivar dependent. On the other hand, the detection of fecal bacteria and other potential human pathogens in OMWs is of major concern and deserves further examination. Despite the fact that the degradation and detoxification of the olive mill wastes have been mostly investigated through the application of known bacterial and fungal species originated from other environmental sources, the biotechnological potential of indigenous microbiota should be further exploited in respect to olive mill waste bioremediation and inactivation of plant and human pathogens. The implementation of omic and metagenomic approaches will further elucidate disposal issues of olive mill wastes.

Abstract
Lipases are water-soluble enzymes that act on insoluble substrates and catalyze the hydrolysis of long-chain triglycerides. Lipases play a vital role in the food, detergent, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. In the past, fungal lipases gained significant attention in the industries due to their substrate specificity and stability under varied chemical and physical conditions. Fungal enzymes are extracellular in nature, and they can be extracted easily, which significantly reduces the cost and makes this source preferable over bacteria. Soil contaminated with spillage from the products of oil and dairy harbors fungal species, which have the potential to secrete lipases to degrade fats and oils. Herein, the strategies involved in the characterization of fungal lipases, capable of degrading fatty substances, are narrated with a focus on further applications.

Abstract
Fat-splitting enzymes (lipases), due to their natural, industrial, and medical relevance, attract enough attention as fats do in our lives. Starting from the paper that we write, cheese and oil that we consume, detergent that we use to remove oil stains, biodiesel that we use as transportation fuel, to the enantiopure drugs that we use in therapeutics, all these applications are facilitated directly or indirectly by lipases. Due to their uniqueness, versatility, and dexterity, decades of research work have been carried out on microbial lipases. The hunt for novel lipases and strategies to improve them continues unabated as evidenced by new families of microbial lipases that are still being discovered mostly by metagenomic approaches. A separate database for true lipases termed LIPABASE has been created recently which provides taxonomic, structural, biochemical information about true lipases from various species. The present review attempts to summarize new approaches that are employed in various aspects of microbial lipase research, viz., screening, isolation, production, purification, improvement by protein engineering, and surface display. Finally, novel applications facilitated by microbial lipases are also presented.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMW) characteristics make it a suitable resource to be used as a microbial culture media to produce value-added compounds, such as enzymes. In this work, the ability of the novel species Aspergillus ibericus to discolor OMW and produce lipase was studied. An initial screening on plates containing an OMW-based agar medium and an emulsified olive oil/rhodamine-B agar medium was employed to select the strain A. ibericus MUM 03.49. Then, experiments in conical flasks with liquid OMW-based media showed that the fungus could growth on undiluted OMW, with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 97 ± 2 g/L, and to produce up to 2,927 ± 54 U/L of lipase. When pure OMW was used in the media, the maximum COD and color reduction achieved were 45 and 97 %, respectively. When OMW diluted to 10 % was used, A. ibericus was able to reduce phenolic and aromatic compounds by 37 and 39 %, respectively. Additionally, lipase production was found to be promoted by the addition of mineral nutrients. When the fermentations were scaled up to a 2-L bioreactor, A. ibericus produced up to 8,319 ± 33 U/L of lipase, and the maximum COD and color reduction were 57 and 24 %, respectively.

Abstract
The reduction of polyphenols content in olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a major issue in olive oil manufacturing. Although researchers have pointed out the potential of white-rot fungus in dephenolizing OMW, the results available in the literature mainly concern pretreated (sterilized) OMW. This paper deals with the reduction of polyphenols content in untreated OMW by means of a white-rot fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus. Dephenolization was performed both in an airlift bioreactor and in aerated flasks. The process was carried out under controlled non-sterile conditions, with different operating configurations (batch, continuous, biomass recycling) representative of potential industrial operations. Total organic carbon, polyphenols concentration, phenol oxidase activity, dissolved oxygen concentration, oxygen consumption rate, and pH were measured during every run. Tests were carried out with or without added nutrients (potato starch and potato dextrose) and laccases inducers (i.e., CuSO₄). OMW endogenous microorganisms were competing with P. ostreatus for oxygen during simultaneous fermentation. Dephenolization of raw OMW by P. ostreatus under single batch was as large as 70%. Dephenolization was still extensive even when biomass was recycled up to six times. OMW pre-aeration had to be provided under continuous operation to avoid oxygen consumption by endogenous microorganisms that might spoil the process. The role of laccases in the dephenolization process has been discussed. Dephenolization under batch conditions with biomass recycling and added nutrients proved to be the most effective configuration for OMW polyphenols reduction in industrial plants (42-68% for five cycles).

Abstract
Due to the high organic compounds and high salinity of fishmeal wastewater (FW), it was firstly used as a novel medium to produce microbial lipid in this paper. Fermentation of FW without any additives adding showed that the broth was appropriate for the growth of strain Lipomyces starkeyi HL; however, production of 5.34 g l(-1) of biomass containing 20.8% of lipid was not satisfied. In order to enhance the accumulation of lipid and cell growth, FW was supplemented with various concentrations of glucose; meanwhile, the influence of initial pH was investigated. Biomass and lipid yield on FW were markedly affected by glucose concentration and initial pH. The addition of 20 g l(-1) glucose at initial pH 4.0 got the best results: 17.6 g l(-1) of biomass, 2.7 g l(-1) of lipid yield, 91.2% of protein removal and 43.4% of the chemical oxygen demand removal. The variation of fatty acid composition upon time course in the cellular lipid on FW or a mixture of glucose and FW was further studied.
