Abstract
Silage is an excellent method of feed preservation; however, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide produced during fermentation are significant sources of agricultural greenhouse gases. Therefore, determining a specific production method is crucial for reducing global warming. The effects of four temperatures (10 °C, 20 °C, 30 °C, and 40 °C) on silage quality, greenhouse gas yield and microbial community composition of forage sorghum were investigated. At 20 °C and 30 °C, the silage has a lower pH value and a higher lactic acid content, resulting in higher silage quality and higher total gas production. In the first five days of ensiling, there was a significant increase in the production of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. After that, the output remained relatively stable, and their production at 20 °C and 30 °C was significantly higher than that at 10 °C and 40 °C. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the predominant silage microorganisms at the phylum level. Under the treatment of 20 °C, 30 °C, and 40 °C, Lactobacillus had already dominated on the second day of silage. However, low temperatures under 10 °C slowed down the microbial community succession, allowing, bad microorganisms such as Chryseobacterium, Pantoea and Pseudomonas dominate the fermentation, in the early stage of ensiling, which also resulted in the highest bacterial network complexity. According to random forest and structural equation model analysis, the production of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide is mainly affected by microorganisms such as Lactobacillus, Klebsiella and Enterobacter, and temperature influences the activity of these microorganisms to mediate gas production in silage. This study helps reveal the relationship between temperature, microbial community and greenhouse gas production during silage fermentation, providing a reference for clean silage fermentation.

Abstract
This study assessed the effects of the addition of biochar prepared at 700 °C with different dosages on the anaerobic digestion of food waste. The biochar addition at a concentration of 10.0 g/L increased the cumulative methane yield by 128%, and daily methane production was also significantly promoted. The addition of biochar derived from poplar sawdust significantly increased the relative abundance of dominant bacteria for anaerobic digestion by 85.54-2530% and promoted the degradation of refractory organic matter and the transfer of materials between the hydrolysis and acid production stages. Further analysis has demonstrated that Bathyarchaeia and hydrogenotrophic methanogens were enriched by the biochar addition. Meanwhile, the relative abundances of functional genes, including C5-branched dibasic acid metabolism, and pyruvate metabolism, were increased by 11.38-26.27%. The relative abundances of genes related to major amino acid metabolism, including histidine metabolism, lysine biosynthesis, and phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis, were increased by 11.96-15.71%. Furthermore, the relative abundances of genes involved in major replication and repair were increased by 14.76-22.76%, and the major folding, sorting, degradation, and translation were increased by 14.47-19.95%, respectively. The relative abundances of genes related to major membrane transport and cell motility were increased by 10.02 and 83.09%, respectively.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of kinds of additives on silage quality, the mixture of king grass and rice straw was ensiled with addition of sucrose, citric acid and malic acid at the levels of 0, 1 and 2%, being blank control (CK), citric acid groups (CA1, CA2), malic acid groups (MA1, MA2), citric acid + malic acid groups (CM1, CM2), sucrose groups (SU1, SU2), mainly focusing on fermentation quality, nutrient content, aerobic stability and microbial community of the silages. The results showed that the addition of sucrose decreased (p < 0.05) pH and increased the content of water soluble carbohydrate (p < 0.05). The sucrose groups and mixed acid groups also had a lower (p < 0.01) neutral detergent fiber content. The addition of citric acid and the mixed acid increased (p < 0.01) the aerobic stability of the silage, reduced the abundance of Acinetobacter, and the addition of citric acid also increased the abundance of Lactiplantibacillus. It is inferred that citric acid and malic acid could influence fermentation quality by inhibiting harmful bacteria and improve aerobic stability, while sucrose influenced fermentation quality by by promoting the generation of lactic acid. It is suggested that the application of citric acid, malic acid and sucrose would achieve an improvement effect on fermentation quality of the mixed silage.

Abstract
The seasonal surplus and putrefactive property of moist forages inevitably increase the pressure on environmental protection and residual grass disposal. In the current work, the anaerobic fermentation approach was adopted to assist the sustainable recycling of leftover Pennisetum giganteum (LP), and its chemical composition, fermentation performance, bacterial community and functional profiles during anaerobic fermentation were studied. Fresh LP was spontaneously fermented for up to 60 d. At the end of anaerobic fermentation, fermented LP (FLP) displayed homolactic fermentation with low pH value, ethanol, and ammonia nitrogen concentrations but high lactic acid concentration. Weissella was dominant in 3-day FLP, yet Lactobacillus was the overwhelming genus (92.6%) in 60-day FLP. The anaerobic fermentation process promoted (P < 0.05) the metabolism of carbohydrate and nucleotide while suppressing (P < 0.05) that of lipid, cofactors, vitamins, energy, and amino acid. The results showed that the residual grass with LP as an example could be successfully fermented even if no additives were added, without signs of clostridial and fungal contamination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high fibre content of whole plants of Broussonetia papyrifera limits its efficient utilization. Ferulic acid esterase (FAE), in combination with xylanase, can effectively cleave the lignin-carbohydrate complex, promoting the function of cellulase. However, little is known about the impact of these additives on silage. To effectively utilize natural woody plant resources, FAE-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RO395, xylanase (XY) and cellulase (CE) were used to investigate the dynamic fermentation characteristics, fibre and nitrogen components and microbial community structure during B. papyrifera ensiling. RESULTS Broussonetia papyrifera was either not treated (CK) or treated with FAE-producing lactic acid bacteria (LP), CE, XY, LP + CE, LP + XY or LP + CE + XY for 3, 7, 15, 30 or 60 days, respectively. In comparison with those in the CK treatment, the L. plantarum and enzyme treatments (LP + CE, LP + XY and LP + XY + CE), especially the LP + XY + CE treatment, significantly increased the lactic acid concentration and decreased the pH and the contents of acid detergent insoluble protein and NH3 -N (P < 0.05). Enzyme addition improved the degradation efficiency of lignocellulose, and a synergistic effect was observed after enzyme treatment in combination with LP; in addition, the lowest acid detergent fibre, neutral detergent fibre, hemicellulose and cellulose contents were detected after the LP + CE + XY treatment (P < 0.05). Moreover, CE, XY and LP additions significantly improved the microbial community structure, increased the relative abundance of Lactiplantibacillus and Firmicutes, and effectively inhibited undesirable bacterial (Enterobacter) growth during ensiling. CONCLUSION FAE-producing L. plantarum and the two tested enzymes exhibited synergistic effects on improving the quality of silage, which indicates that this combination can serve as an efficient method for improved B. papyrifera silage utilization. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
This study delves into the impact of various pretreatment methods on the inoculum in dark fermentation trials, specifically exploring thermal shock at different temperatures (60, 80, and 100 °C) and durations (15, 30, and 60 min), as well as acid shock at pH 5.5. Initial acidification of the substrate/inoculum mixture facilitates H2 generation, making acid shock an effective pretreatment option. However, it is also observed that combining thermal and acid pretreatments boosts H2 production synergistically. The synergy between thermal and acid pretreatments results in a significant improvement, increasing the overall hydrogen production efficiency by more than 9% compared to assays involving acidification alone. This highlights the considerable potential for optimizing pretreatment strategies. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the critical role of inoculum characteristics in the process, with diverse hydrogen-generating bacteria significantly influencing outcomes. The established equivalent performance of HCl and H2SO4 in inoculum pretreatment demonstrates the versatility of these acids in shaping the microbial community and influencing hydrogen production. The analysis of glucose conversion data highlights a prevalence of butyric acid in all trials, irrespective of the pretreatment method, emphasizing the dominance of the butyrate pathway in hydrogen generation. Additionally, an examination of the microbial community offers valuable insights into the intricate relationships between temperature, pH, and microbial diversity. Bacteroidota established its dominance among the bacterial populations, with a relative abundance exceeding 20-25% in the raw inoculum, and this dominance further increased following the treatment. Thermal and acid pretreatments result in significant shifts in dominant microbial communities, with some non-dominant phyla like Cloacimonadota and Spirochaetota becoming more prominent. These shifts in microbial diversity underscore the sensitivity of microbial communities to environmental conditions and pretreatment methods, further highlighting the importance of understanding their dynamics in dark fermentation processes.

Abstract
In this paper, the effects of nano-zero valent iron (nZVI) on anaerobic digestion of sulphate wastewater with different SO 4 2 - /COD ratios, including the COD removal rate, methane yield, intermediate products and the change of microbial community structure, were investigated. The results showed that nZVI could effectively enhance the treatment efficiency and methane yield. Compared with the control group without nZVI, the methane yield increased from 348.6833 to 1007.05 mL CH4/gCODremoval with 4 g nZVI loading at SO 4 2 - /COD = 0.1. nZVI could make electron flow from sulphate reduction to methane production, which increased methane yield even at high sulphate concentration. The microbial community analysis showed that adding nZVI could increase the abundance of acetoclastic methanogens, which accelerated hydrolysis acidification.

Abstract
Perennial grasses are potentially abundant sources of biomass for biorefineries, which can produce high yields with low input requirements, and many added environmental benefits. However, perennial grasses are highly recalcitrant to biodegradation and may require pretreatment before undergoing many biorefining pathways. Microbial pretreatment uses the ability of microorganisms or their enzymes to deconstruct plant biomass and enhance its biodegradability. This process can enhance the enzymatic digestibility of perennial grasses, enabling saccharification with cellulolytic enzymes to produce fermentable sugars and derived fermentation products. Similarly, microbial pretreatment can increase the methanation rate when the grasses are used to produce biogas through anaerobic digestion. Microorganisms can also increase the digestibility of the grasses to improve their quality as animal feed, enhance the properties of grass pellets, and improve biomass thermochemical conversion. Metabolites produced by fungi or bacteria during microbial pretreatment, such as ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes, can be further recovered as added-value products. Additionally, the action of the microorganisms can release chemicals with commercialization potential, such as hydroxycinnamic acids and oligosaccharides, from the grasses. This review explores the recent advances and remaining challenges in using microbial pretreatment for perennial grasses with the goal of obtaining added-value products through biorefining. It emphasizes recent trends in microbial pretreatment such as the use of microorganisms as part of microbial consortia or in unsterilized systems, the use and development of microorganisms and consortia capable of performing more than one biorefining step, and the use of cell-free systems based on microbial enzymes. Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from native grasses and naturally fermented silages, determine their identity, and assess their effects on silage quality and bacterial communities of the native grasses of three steppe types fermented for 60 days. Methods Among the 58 isolated LAB strains, Limosilactobacillus fermentum (BL1) and Latilactobacillus graminis (BL5) were identified using 16S rRNA sequences. Both strains showed normal growth at 15- 45°C temperature, 3-6.5% NaCl concentration, and pH 4-9. Two isolated LAB strains (labeled L1 and L5) and two commercial additives (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lentilactobacillus buchneri; designated as LP and LB, respectively) were added individually to native grasses of three steppe types (meadow steppe, MS; typical steppe, TS; desert steppe, DS), and measured after 60 d of fermentation. The fresh material (FM) of different steppe types was treated with LAB (1 × 105 colony forming units/g fresh weight) or distilled water (control treatment [CK]). Results Compared with CK, the LAB treatment showed favorable effects on all three steppe types, i.e., reduced pH and increased water-soluble carbohydrate content, by modulating the microbiota. The lowest pH was found in the L5 treatment of three steppe types, at the same time, the markedly (p < 0.05) elevated acetic acid (AA) concentration was detected in the L1 and LB treatment. The composition of bacterial community in native grass silage shifted from Pantoea agglomerans and Rosenbergiella nectarea to Lentilactobacillus buchneri at the species level. The abundance of Lentilactobacillus buchneri and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum increased significantly in L1, L5, LP, and LB treatments, respectively, compared with CK (p < 0.05). Conclusion In summary, the addition of LAB led to the shifted of microbiota and modified the quality of silage, and L. fermentum and L. graminis improved the performance of native grass silage.

Abstract
This work evaluated the dynamic changes of phyllosphere microbiota and chemical parameters at various growth stages of Pennisetum giganteum and their effects on the bacterial community, cooccurrence networks, and functional properties during anaerobic fermentation. P. giganteum was collected at two growth stages (early vegetative stage [PA] and late vegetative stage [PB]) and was naturally fermented (NPA and NPB) for 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days, respectively. At each time point, NPA or NPB was randomly sampled for the analysis of chemical composition, fermentation parameter, and microbial number. In addition, the fresh, 3-day, and 60-day NPA and NPB were subjected to high-throughput sequencing and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional prediction analyses. Growth stage obviously affected the phyllosphere microbiota and chemical parameters of P. giganteum. After 60 days of fermentation, NPB had a higher lactic acid concentration and ratio of lactic acid to acetic acid but a lower pH value and ammonia nitrogen concentration than NPA. Weissella and Enterobacter were dominant in 3-day NPA and Weissella was dominant in 3-day NPB, while Lactobacillus was the most abundant genus in both 60-day NPA and NPB. The complexity of bacterial cooccurrence networks in the phyllosphere decreased with P. giganteum growth. The ensiling process further decreased the complexity of bacterial networks, with the simplest bacterial correlation structures in NPB. There were great differences in the KEGG functional profiles of PA and PB. Ensiling promoted the metabolism of lipid, cofactors, vitamins, energy, and amino acids but suppressed the metabolism of carbohydrates and nucleotides. Storage time had a greater influence than growth stage on bacterial community diversity, cooccurrence networks, and functional profiles of P. giganteum silage. Differences in bacterial diversity and functionality of P. giganteum silage caused by growth stage appear to be offset by long-term storage. IMPORTANCE The phyllosphere microbiota consists of various and complex microbes, including bacteria with crucial relevance to the quality and safety of fermented food and feed. It initially derives from soil and becomes specific to its host after interaction with plants and climate. Bacteria associated with the phyllosphere are highly abundant and diverse, but we know little about their succession. Here, the phyllospheric microbiota structure was analyzed within the growth of P. giganteum. We also evaluated the effects of phyllosphere microbiota and chemical parameter changes on the anaerobic fermentation of P. giganteum. We observed remarkable differences in bacterial diversity, cooccurrence, and functionality of P. giganteum at various growth stages and storage times. The obtained results are important for understanding the fermentation mechanism and may contribute to high-efficient production without additional cost.

Abstract
Perennial energy grasses (PEGs) are supposed to be a momentous heading to the development of biomass energy on account of their characteristic superiorities of high yield, strong adaptability and no direct competition with food crops. Anaerobic digestion of PEGs with great biogas-producing potential occupies an irreplaceable status despite a variety of pathways for conversion to renewable energy. However, efficient digestion of PEGs suffers from severe challenges in connection with feedstock properties such as recalcitrant structures. This review highlights recent research in anaerobic digestion of PEGs and focuses on essential aspects enhancing anaerobic digestion performance: types and properties of grasses, diverse pretreatments, various co-feedstocks for co-digestion, dosing of different additives, and improvements in reactors. General discussions on the future prospects of anaerobic digestion of PEGs are proposed. Overcoming knowledge gaps and technical limitations will facilitate further application of PEGs on an industrial scale.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of alfalfa is a promising response to the increasing demand for squalene. Ensiling could enhance the squalene content of fresh alfalfa and silage. To investigate and exploit the anaerobic fermentation of forage as a new squalene source, alfalfa was ensiled without (CON) or with molasses (ML) and sunflower seed oil (SSL) for 10, 40, and 70 days. RESULTS Naturally ensiled alfalfa was of poor quality but had up to 1.93 times higher squalene content (P < 0.001) than fresh alfalfa. The squalene-producing bacteria were found to be cocci lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Adding ML and SSL decreased squalene content (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001) by 6.89% and 11.6%, respectively. Multiple linear regression models and correlation analysis indicated that squalene synthase was the key enzyme for squalene synthesis. The addition of ML and SSL altered the structure of LAB communities, mainly decreasing the relative abundance of cocci LAB, which was responsible for squalene synthesis, and changing the fermentation products (lactic acid, propionic acid, and ammonia-N) influencing the squalene-related enzymes, thereby decreasing squalene production. Compared with squalene production from the reference bacteria (Pediococcus acidilactici Ch-2, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Bacillus subtilis, engineered Escherichia coli), alfalfa silage had the potential to be a new squalene source. CONCLUSION Natural ensiled alfalfa was a promising source for squalene, and ensiling was a potential pathway to obtain novel high-yield squalene bacteria. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this study, accumulated fermentable sugars from biosaccharified corn straw were used to generate methane through anaerobic digestion (AD). The results showed that reducing sugars from biosaccharification expanded corn straw (BECS) treated with Clostridium thermocellum XF811 accumulated with yields of 94.9 mg/g. The BECS used for AD was converted into a high methane yield (7436 mL), which was 49.3 % higher than that of expanded corn straw (ECS). High-throughput microbial analysis suggested that Methanoculleus and Methanobacterium greatly contributed to the high methane yield. Industrial experiments demonstrated that the methane production from BECS by AD was 72,955 m3, which increased by 13.2 % compared to that from ECS. Biosaccharification pretreatment accelerated ECS destruction and accumulated sugars, thereby increasing methane yields. This study provides a strategy for producing clean energy from lignocellulose biomass.

Abstract
This study aimed to screen and identify lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains from the Stipa grandis and naturally fermented silage, and assess their effects on the silage quality and bacterial community of Stipa grandis after 60 days of the fermentation process. A total of 38 LAB were isolated, and strains ZX301 and YX34 were identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus using 16S rRNA sequences; they can normally grow at 10−30 °C, with a tolerance of pH and NaCl from 3.5 to 8.0 and 3 to 6.5%, respectively. Subsequently, the two isolated LAB and one commercial additive (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum) were added to Stipa grandis for ensiling for 60 days and recorded as the ZX301, YX34, and P treatments. The addition of LAB was added at 1 × 105 colony-forming unit/g of fresh weight, and the same amount of distilled water was sprayed to serve as a control treatment (CK). Compared to the CK treatment, the ZX301 and YX34 treatments exhibited a positive effect on pH reduction. The water-soluble carbohydrate content was significantly (p < 0.05) increased in ZX301, YX34, and P treatments than in CK treatment. At the genus level, the bacterial community in Stipa grandis silage involves a shift from Pantoea to Lactiplantibacillus. Compared to the CK treatment, the ZX301, YX34, and P treatments significantly (p < 0.05) increase the abundance of Pediococcus and Lactiplantibacillus, respectively. Consequently, the results indicated that the addition of LAB reconstructed microbiota and influenced silage quality. The strain ZX301 could improve the ensiling performance in Stipa grandis silage.

Abstract
To better evaluate the effects of Acremonium cellulase (AC) and previously screened heat-resistant Lactobacillus plantarum 149 (LP149) on lignocellulose degradation, fermentation quality, and microbial community during ensiling in humid and hot areas, this study used a small-scale fermentation system to prepare hybrid elephant grass silage at 30 and 45°C, respectively. Compared to control and commercial inoculant Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), the addition of AC or strain LP149 decreased the contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and cellulose and increased the contents of glucose, fructose, and sucrose during fermentation. Furthermore, AC and LP149 treatments altered the microbial communities' structure during ensiling. AC treatment provided more substrate for microbial fermentation, resulting in an increase in bacterial alpha diversity. LP149 treatment increased the Lactobacillus abundance and optimized the bacterial community compositions. In addition, AC and LP149 treatments had higher (P < 0.05) lactic acid and acetic acid contents and lower (P < 0.05) pH, butyric acid, and NH3-N levels compared to the control. These results indicated that AC and strain LP149 are promising silage additives that can promote lignocellulose degradation and improve the fermentation quality of hybrid elephant grass in humid and hot areas.

Abstract
Florfenicol has been widely used in the veterinary and aquaculture to control bacterial diseases because of its high efficacy, quick effect, and low cost. The water-sediment system has become an important sink for florfenicol, and the anaerobic environment of lake sediments is favorable for methane (CH4) production. Although antibiotics may impact methanogenesis under anaerobic conditions, the influence of florfenicol on CH4 accumulation in anaerobic water-sediment system remains uncertain. This study evaluated how florfenicol affects CH4 accumulation and the structure of the prokaryotic community in a water-sediment system. Anaerobic systems with different florfenicol concentrations (0, 0.2, 1, 5 and 10 mg/L) were incubated and CH4 accumulation, pH, total organic carbon content, degradation ratio of florfenicol, and structure of the prokaryotic community were monitored. It was found that CH4 accumulation raised in low florfenicol (0.2 and 1 mg/L) systems during the growth period, while CH4 accumulation declined in high florfenicol (5 and 10 mg/L) systems. In the first 13 d, 83.67-99.30 % of florfenicol degraded in different treatments. The addition of florfenicol also influenced the structure of the prokaryotic community of the sediments. Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi were dominant at the phylum level. The dominant taxa at the order level gradually changed from Methanomicrobiales to Methanobacteriales, and finally to Methanosarcinales, indicating the dynamic transformation of methanogens in the reactor. This study reveals the effects of florfenicol on CH4 production under anaerobic conditions and provides a theoretical basis for further research on the underlying mechanisms. The findings also provide some basic data on the impact of new pollutants on the global carbon cycle and greenhouse gas emission.

Abstract
Contamination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from animals is a serious issue as they may spread to human pathogenic bacteria. The reduction of ARG contamination from livestock waste is thus essential. High solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) is a new and effective technology although some aspects, such as change characteristics of ARGs at different reaction stages, have not been fully investigated. This study focused firstly on the variations in ARGs at different reaction stages in HSAD systems with five different starting methods: 1 natural start (the control) and 4 rapid starts by changing leachate reflux forms. The results showed that the rapid starting methods could accelerate start-up and increase biogas production by 312.5%. The starting and acidification stages showed higher microbial richness and diversity compared with the other stages. ARGs found to be reduced at acidification stage. Variation in ARGs at the starting and acidification stages was mainly driven by a combination of microbial community, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and environmental factors; while the main contributory factors at the gas production stage were biomass and several unexplained factors. At the ending stage, the main driving factors were biomass and microbial communities. Most of the potential hosts (16/20) of the ARGs belonged to the Firmicutes phylum, which showed the lowest connections with the ARGs at the gas production stage.

Abstract
Oat (Avena sativa L.) is one of the most widely cultivated crops used as forage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cellulase and Lactobacillus plantarum interactions with different moisture contents on oat ensiling. Oats with three moisture contents were treated with nothing (C), cellulase (CE), lactic acid bacteria (LP), or CE+LP and ensiled for 30 and 60 days. Compared with the control, LP and CE treatments increased crude protein and lactic acid concentrations and reduced the pH and ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen (NH3-N/TN) ratios of silages. The addition of CE improved lignocellulosic degradation, compared with approximately 67% (LD) and 81% moisture content (HD) ensiling, CE (CE, CE+LP) ensiling in the approximately 75% moisture content (MD) group retained higher water-soluble carbohydrate, glucose, sucrose and fructose concents. The LP and CE inoculations significantly reduced the microbial community diversity, and lower values for the observed species, ACE, Chao1, and Shannon indices compared with CK-treated samples. Additives inhibited the growth of unfavorable bacteria (such as Clostridium) and increased the abundances of lactic acid bacteria (LAB); the maximum increases in the Lactiplantibacillus abundance were obtained in the LP- and CE+LP-treated samples, improving the microbial community structure in silage. In summary, adding LP and CE effectively improved the oat fermentation quality, and better performances in ensiling oat and lignocellulose degradation were obtained with LP and CE combinations, especially for the MD group of silages that were ensiled for 60 days. The addition of CE and LP at the appropriate moisture content might be helpful for producing high-quality oat silage, and also provide a simple and feasible method to enhance the effects of bacteria and enzymes.

Abstract
To develop a new high-yielding and polysaccharide-containing forage resource for livestock, the effects of different cutting methods and additives on Saccharum arundinaceum silage were evaluated. The wilted S. arundinaceum were chopped and knead-wired. The silages from each cutting method were treated with Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), cellulase (CE) and the combination of LP and CE (LP + CE) for 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days. Compared with the CK treatment, CE treatment exhibited better effects in the degradation of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), LP exhibited a better performance in preserving the content of dry matter (DM), and adding LP + CE significantly enhanced (P < 0.05) the contents of lactic acid (LA), crude protein (CP) and DM and significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the pH and NDF content during ensiling. In addition, both additives exerted a remarkable effect on the silage bacterial community (P < 0.05), with a dramatic increase in the Lactobacillus abundance and a decrease in the abundance of Enterobacter. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) became the most dominant bacteria that affected the fermentation quality of LP and LP + CE silages. Meanwhile, chopped silages showed better fermentation quality and nutrient preservation and a higher abundance of LAB. Our research indicated that the chopped S. arundinaceum ensiling with LP + CE could exert a positive effect on LA fermentation and preservation of nutrient substances by shifting the bacterial community. In conclusion, S. arundinaceum can serve as a new silage resource for feed utilization by the ensiling method of LP + CE-chopped.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-fermentation (AcoF) of dairy cattle manure (DCM) and corn straw silage (CSS) for producing lactic acid (LA) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was investigated. Batch experiments were conducted at seven different DCM/CSS ratios and at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Results indicated that the highest concentration of LA was 17.50 ± 0.70 g/L at DCM:CSS ratio of 1:3 and thermophilic temperature, while VFAs was 18.23 ± 2.45 g/L at mono-CSS fermentation and mesophilic temperature. High solubilization of thermophilic conditions contributed to LA accumulation in AcoF process. Presence of the CSS increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus for LA production at thermophilic. Meanwhile, the abundance of Bifidobacterium was increased when CSS was added at mesophilic, which could conduce to VFAs production. This study provides a new route for enhancing the biotransformation of DCM and CSS into short-chain fatty acids, potentially bringing economic benefits to agricultural waste treatment.

Abstract
A large amount of waste activated sludge (WAS) harms the ecological environment, and anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective method for WAS treatment. In this study, activated carbon (AC)/ nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) was synthesized by a liquid-phase reduction method, and was used to boost methane production. The associated mechanisms and effects of additives on AD during the addition and removal stage were investigated systematically. Compared to the blank group, the cumulative methane production was increased by 14.3%, 26.3% and 34.1% in the groups of AC, NZVI and AC/NZVI, respectively. The addition of AC/NZVI significantly increased the concentration of VFAs and promoted the hydrolysis and acidification of WAS. After the AD of the additives addition stage was finished, the additives were removed and the sludge was replenished in all groups, the methanogenesis performance of the experimental groups was significantly inhibited. The cumulative methane production in the AC and AC/NZVI groups was 21.7% and 13.5% lower than the blank group, respectively. The experimental results have a good correlation with curve fitting by the modified Gompertz model. The modified Gompertz model found that AC, NZVI and AC/NZVI increased the methanogenic potential and maximum methane production rate of WAS, but also prolonged the lag-phase time. AC/NZVI might play a role in coupling effects. It could not only maintain the original characteristics of NZVI and increase its stability, but also develop the advantages of AC promoting direct interspecies electron transfer. Microbial community analysis indicated that the abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens was enriched by AC/NZVI.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fermentation quality, microbial community, and functional shifts of sweet sorghum during ensiling. The high-moisture sweet sorghum (SS) was naturally ensiled for 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days. After 60 days of ensiling, sweet sorghum silage (SSS) showed homolactic fermentation with absent butyric acid, low pH value, acceptable concentrations of propionic acid, ethanol, and ammonia nitrogen and high lactic acid concentration. Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas, and Pseudomonas were the advantage genera in SS. While, Lactococcus, Weissella, and Pediococcus were dominant in 3-day SSS and subsequently replaced by Lactobacillus in 60-day SSS. Spearman’s correlation heatmap showed that Pediococcus and Leuconostoc were negatively related to the pH value of SSS. There were great differences in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional profiles of SS and SSS. Ensiling process downregulated the metabolism of amino acid, energy, cofactors, and vitamins, but upregulated the metabolism of nucleotides and carbohydrates. Overall, next-generation sequencing in conjunction with KEGG functional prediction revealed the distinct differences in the initial and late phases of ensiling in terms of both community succession and functional shifts. The knowledge regarding bacterial community dynamics and functional shifts of SS during ensiling is important for understanding the fermentation mechanism and may contribute to the production of high-quality sweet sorghum silage.

Abstract
Among the various methods of pre-treatment of lignocellulosic waste with the objective of optimizing the production of methane, silage stands out as a promising alternative due to its operational simplicity, low cost and effective results. In this work, the silage of orange waste (Citrus cinensis) with 14 and 21 days and its influence on the potential of methane generation was evaluated, also evaluating the impacts of silage on the kinetics of the process. Among several configurations of substrate and inoculum studied, the best configuration observed was using the ensiled residue with 21 days and granular anaerobic sludge (ENS21 + GS), reaching a methane generation potential of about 171 N mL·g-1 VS, increasing by 119% in terms of methane generation potential without silage pre-treatment (WENS+GS), obtaining biogas with 70% in CH4. In relation to the kinetics, the silage process drastically interfered in the kinetic behavior of the methane production, being the Cone model the one that obtained the best adjustments, among those studied, for the orange bagasse residue in the evaluated experimental conditions. Silage is an attractive alternative to increase the production of methane for lignocellulosic waste, as a pre-treatment, without significantly increasing operating costs, and it can also be associated with other sequential processes to take advantage of the maximum energy potential of lignocellulosic waste.

Abstract
Myriophyllum aquaticum (M. aquaticum) is a commonly used aquatic macrophyte for water purification and could be utilized as animal food. However, the high water content of M. aquaticum makes it difficult for long-term preservation, which leads to challenges as an ideal animal feed ingredient. The storage of Silage for long periods may be a proper method to solve the problem. In the present paper, we assess the effects of lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus buchneri (LB), Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), or their combination on fermentation and microbial communities during the ensiling of M. aquaticum silage. The results show that the LP-treated silage displays a higher lactic acid concentration than that in the control silage. Both LB and LP increased the abundance of Lactobacillus, but decreased the abundance of Serratia and Prevotella_9 in M. aquaticum silage after 60 days of ensiling. Both LB and LP increased the diversity and richness of fungi. Therefore, the inoculation of LP improved silage fermentation during ensiling. These results show that the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria improves the fermentation quality of M. aquaticum silage, which makes it possible for the application of M. aquaticum to animal forage in the future.

Abstract
High concentration nitrogen-containing organic wastewater is a potential substrate for hydrogen production by dark fermentation. In this study, the effect of initial pH on the performance of hydrogen production by dark fermentation coupled denitrification was investigated. The hydrogen production, liquid metabolites, nitrate, nitrite and microbial community were monitored under the condition of pH varying from 4 to 11. Results showed that the highest hydrogen production (70.94 ± 4.750 mL/g VSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate (37.13 ± 1.86%) and nitrate reduction rate (1.57 ± 0.27 mg/L/h) were obtained at pH of 5. Under this condition, the nitrate was mainly reduced to N2 with hydrogen as the electron donor. When the initial pH was 6-11, nitrate mainly reduced to N2 through co-action with acetate. Microbial community analysis revealed that as the initial pH increased from 4 to 11, the main hydrogen-producing microorganisms were gradually converted from Clostridium sensu stricto 12 sp. into Clostridium sensu stricto 1 sp, which leaded to changes in the hydrogen production process.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of harvesting time on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition, and microbial community of king grass silage. King grass was harvested at three growth periods of 90 days (KN90S), 110 days (KN110S), and 130 days (KN130S); chopped into 2-3-cm particle size; and ensiled in polyethylene bags (20 × 30 cm). The fermentation quality and chemical composition of silages were analyzed after 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days of ensiling. Bacterial community of silage ensiled for 60 days was profiled using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. The KN110S showed the most extensive lactic acid (LA) fermentation during 7 days of fermentation compared to KN90S and KN130S. After 60 days of fermentation, the KN110S showed the lowest pH and the highest lactic acid content among the three treatments. The butyric acid and ammonia nitrogen contents of KN90S and KN130S were significantly greater than those of KN110S (p < 0.05). After a timespan of 60 days of ensiling, the bacterial community of king grass silage was predominantly populated by Proteobacteria in phylum level, whereas unclassified Enterobacteriaceae genus remained dominant in all silages. A higher relative abundance of Clostridium was observed in KN90S and KN130S, but not in KN110S, and greater abundance of Lactococcus appeared in KN110S and KN130S silages than KN90S. It is concluded that harvesting time had an important effect on the fermentation quality and microbial community of king grass silage.

Abstract
Root rot caused by the pathogenic fungi of the Fusarium genus poses a great threat to the yield and quality of medicinal plants. The application of Agricultural Jiaosu (AJ), which contains beneficial microbes and metabolites, represents a promising disease control strategy. However, the action-effect of AJ on Fusarium root rot disease remains unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the characteristics and antifungal activity of AJ fermented using waste leaves and stems of medicinal plants, and elucidated the mechanisms of AJ action by quantitative real-time PCR and redundancy analysis. The effects of AJ and antagonistic microbes isolated from it on disease suppression were further validated through a pot experiment. Our results indicate that the AJ was rich in beneficial microorganisms (Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Lactobacillus), organic acids (acetic, formic, and butyric acids) and volatile organic compounds (alcohols and esters). It could effectively inhibit Fusarium oxysporum and the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 13.64%. The antifungal contribution rate of the microbial components of AJ reached 46.48%. Notably, the redundancy analysis revealed that the Bacillus and Pseudomonas genera occupied the main niche during the whole inhibition process. Moreover, the abundance of the Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Lactobacillus genera were positively correlated with the pH-value, lactic, formic and butyric acids. The results showed that the combined effects of beneficial microbes and organic acid metabolites increased the efficacy of the AJ antifungal activity. The isolation and identification of AJ’s antagonistic microbes detected 47 isolates that exhibited antagonistic activities against F. oxysporum in vitro. In particular, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus velezensis presented the strongest antifungal activity. In the pot experiment, the application of AJ and these two Bacillus species significantly reduced the disease incidence of Fusarium root rot and promoted the growth of Astragalus. The present study provides a cost-effective method to control of Fusarium root rot disease, and establishes a whole-plant recycling pattern to promote the sustainable development of medicinal plant cultivation.

Abstract
Research on additives that improve the quality of silages for an enhanced and sustainable biogas production are limited in the literature. Frequently used additives such as lactic acid bacteria enhance the quality of silages but have no significant effect on biogas yield. This study investigated the effect of a new enzymatic additive on the quality of ensiling and BMP of sugar beet leaves. Sugar beet leaves were ensiled with and without the additive (Aspergillus- and Neurospora-based additive) in ratios of 50:1 (A50:1), 150:1 (B150:1), and 500:1 (C500:1) (gsubstrate/gadditive) for 370 days at ambient temperature. Results showed that silages with additive had lower yeast activity and increased biodegradability compared to silages without additive (control). The additive increased the BMP by 45.35%, 24.23%, and 21.69% in silages A50:1, B150:1, and C500:1 respectively, compared to silages without additive (control). Although the novel enzyme is in its early stage, the results indicate that it has a potential for practical application at an additive to substrate ratio (g/g) of 1:50. The use of sugar beet leaves and the novel enzyme for biogas production forms part of the circular economy since it involves the use of wastes for clean energy production.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-digestion of excess sludge (ES) and different varieties of rice straw including indica rice straw (IRS), japonica rice straw (JRS) and glutinous rice straw (GRS) was investigated in batch and semi-continuous experiments. The batch experiment results showed that the GRS addition presents the highest hydrolysis and methanogenesis rates, its cumulative methane yield (CMY) was 305.75 mL/g VS and its average methane content was 60.56%. After digestion, the structure of GRS was almost completely destroyed, which was beneficial to the degradation of lignocellulose. The digestive process is affected by the abundance of Actinobactereria, Proteobacteria, Methanosaetae and Methanosarcina. The results of semi-continuous digestion were similar to batch digestion. In addition, the addition of GRS increased TN concentration in biogas residue and TP concentration in biogas slurry, but was not conducive to the subsequent dehydration of sludge.

Abstract
Production of high-quality grass-based silages by microbial-mediated anaerobic fermentation is an effective strategy in livestock farms. In the present study, an ensiling process was used to preserve and enhance fermentative metabolites in triticale silages with novel inoculants of Lactobacillus rhamanosus -52 and, Lactobacillus rhamanosus-54. Triticale silages treated with LAB predominantly had lower pH values than control silages due to rapid changes of microbial counts. LAB addition improved anaerobic fermentation profiles showing higher lactic acid, but lower acetic acid and butyric acid concentrations. A background microbial dynamic study indicated that the addition of L. rhamanosus-52 and L. rhamanosus-54 improved silage fermentation, enriched Lactobacillus spp., and decreased microbial richness with diversity, leading to increased efficiency of lactic acid fermentation. In conclusion, LAB treatment can increase silage quality by enhancing the dominance of desirable Lactobacillus while inhibiting the growth of undesirable microbes.

Abstract
To explore the interaction between the residual antibiotic in animal manure and biological treatment, the effect of enrofloxacin (ENR) on the anaerobic digestion of chicken manure, and biodegradation rate of ENR was studied under the condition of actual residual ENR content of 0, 8, 16 and 32 mg/kg·TS. The results showed that the addition of ENR increased the total biogas production, especially 8 mg/kg·TS promoted the anaerobic reaction obviously, and the corresponding cumulative biogas production was increased by 15.33%. However, in the presence of 32 mg/kg·TS, the biogas production rate was reduced and the peak period of biogas production was delayed. The results of enzyme activities determination and 16S rRNA sequencing showed that ENR had different effects on archaea and bacteria. The residual ENR could promote hydrolysis reactions in the anaerobic system, but could inhibit acetoclastic methanogens, and the relative abundance of Methanosaeta declined by 7.22‒12.41%. The first-order kinetic model showed that the half-life period of ENR in the anaerobic digestion system was 9.16‒10.83 days, and the biodegradation rate exceeded 80% after the treatment. This study can bring important information for the management of animal manure in the future.

Abstract
The development of biogas projects feed by lignocellulosic biomass has been constrained by the high cost of pre- and post-treatment. In this study, a novel strategy for pretreatment by using two by-products, i.e., CO2 and liquid digestate (LD), generated from anaerobic digestion (AD) was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Results showed that corn straw pretreated in LD pressurized under 1 Mpa CO2 at 55 ℃ resulted in increased glucose and xylose contents and a 9.80% decrease in cellulose crystallinity. After 45 days of AD conversion, the methane yield increased by 50.97% compared with untreated straw. However, pretreatment in LD pressurized under 1 Mpa CO2 at 170 ℃ produced 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural, which led to a decrease in methane production from the straw in the subsequent AD conversion. The alteration of the microbial community in the pretreated slurry at 55 °C was another potential contributor to the enhanced performance of AD.

In this context, we reviewed existing studies and proposed some key considerations: (1) For assessing the ensiling process, determined dry matter contents should be corrected according to the volatilization loss in oven-drying method to obtain accurate storage loss and methane yield; (2) For comprehensive assessments, the trade-off between storage loss and enhanced biomethane yield should be evaluated from the entire-chain process; (3) The mechanism to enhance methane yield is primarily attributed to increased lignocellulosic biodigestibility through acid-based hydrolysis and biological degradation during ensiling; (4) Measures including co-storage, increasing buffering capacity, adjusting carbon/nitrogen ratio, and additives can be adopted to increase biogas production. The proposed methods, mechanisms, and measures (3Ms) could help initiate the specific quality criteria of biogas-oriented silages.

Abstract
AIMS To isolate and enrich lignocellulolytic microbial consortia from yak (Bos grunniens) rumen and evaluate their effects on the fermentation characteristics and enzymatic hydrolysis in rice straw silage. METHODS AND RESULTS A novel microbial consortium M2 with high CMCase and xylanase activities was enriched and observed to be prone to use natural carbon sources. Its predominant genus was Enterococcus, and most carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) genes belonged to the glycosyl hydrolases class. The consortium M2 was introduced with or without combined lactic acid bacteria (XA) to rice straw silage for 60 days. Inoculating the consortium M2 notably decreased the structural carbohydrate contents and pH of rice straw silages. Treatment that combines consortium M2 and XA resulted in the highest levels of lactic acid and lignocellulose degradation. The consortium M2 alone or combined with XA significantly (p < 0.01) increased water-soluble carbohydrates (WSCs), mono- and disaccharides contents compared with the XA silage. Combined addition obviously improved the enzymatic conversion efficiency of rice straw silage with higher glucose and xylose yields (23.39 and 12.91 w/w% DM, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Ensiling pretreatment with the microbial consortium M2 in sterile rice straw improved fermentation characteristics. The combined application of consortium M2 with XA had synergistic effects on promoting the degradation of structural carbohydrates and enzymatic hydrolysis. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Rice straw is difficult to ensile because of its low WSC and high structural carbohydrate contents. The microbial consortium M2 identified herein exhibits great potential for degrading fibrous substrates, and their combination with XA provides a faster and more effective synergistic strategy for biorefinery of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the effect of temperature on the persistence of fecal bacteria by multiple approaches in ambient anaerobic digestion systems treating swine manure. Both lab-scale (15 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C) and field (26 °C on average) studies were conducted by high-throughput sequencing and culture-based methods. A community-wide Bayesian SourceTracker method was used to identify and estimate the fecal bacterial proportion in anaerobic effluent. High proportional contributions of fecal bacteria were observed in effluent at 15 °C (73%) and 20 °C (75%), while less was found at 25 °C (19%). This was further verified by a field study (23%) and an anaerobic reactor study at 37 °C (0.01%). To explore the potential reasons for differences in fecal bacterial proportions, bacterial taxa were divided into "lost" and "survivor" taxa in manure waste by LEfSe. The "survivor" taxa abundance was positively correlated with SourceTracker proportion (r = 0.913, P = 0.001), but negatively correlated with temperature (r = -0.826, P = 0.006). In addition, biomarkers in effluent were divided into "enriched" and "de novo" taxa. "Enriched" taxa, including acidogenic and acetogenic bacteria, were found at all temperatures, whereas taxa related to organic degradation were multiplied "de novo" at 25 °C. Variation partition analysis showed that temperature could explain 30% of variations in effluent bacterial community. Moreover, coliforms isolated from the manure and effluents at 15 °C and 20 °C were also phylogenetically related. This study provided comprehensive insight into the impact of temperature on the persistence of fecal bacteria in anaerobic effluent, with temperatures over 25 °C recommended to reduce fecal pollution.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to separate the effects of chemical and microbial factors on the fermentation quality and bacterial community of ensiled Pennisetum giganteum. METHODS AND RESULTS Fresh P. giganteum of two vegetative stages (stage I, GI ; stage II, GII ) was treated as follows: GI epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GI (MI CI ), GII epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GI (MII CI ), GI epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GII (MI CII ), and GII epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GII (MII CII ). Triplicates per treatment were sampled after 30 days of ensiling for chemical and microbial analyses and high-throughput sequencing. Silages made from CII (MI CII and MII CII ) had higher lactic acid concentration and the ratio of lactic to acetic acid, and lower pH and ammonia nitrogen concentration than silages produced by CI (MI CI and MII CI ). Species differential analyses showed that the changes of chemical composition rather than epiphytic microbiota significantly affected the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Pantoea in P. giganteum silages. CONCLUSION These above results manifested that chemical composition was the main factor influencing the fermentation quality and bacterial community of P. giganteum silage in this study. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The obtained results may, therefore, be the first record to provide an in-depth understanding of the relative contributions of chemical and microbial parameters on fermentation quality and bacterial community, which is of great importance for modulating silage fermentation and improving silage quality.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of malic acid, sucrose, and their mixture on the fermentation parameters, Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) nitrogen fractions, and bacterial community of Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) silages. The trial was divided into four treatments and labeled as CON (control group) and MLA, SUC, and MIX (respectively denoting the addition of 1% malic acid, 1% sucrose, and 1% malic acid + 1% sucrose to the fresh weight basis). The silage packages were opened on the 2nd, 5th, 10th, 20th, and 40th days of ensiling for subsequent determination. Malic acid and sucrose increased the lactic acid content (p < 0.05) and pH value, and the acetic acid contents of MLA and MIX were lower than those in CON (p < 0.05). Compared with sucrose, malic acid had a better capacity to preserve nutrients and inhibit proteolysis, and thus exerted better effects on the CNCPS nitrogen fractions. The results of 16S rRNA showed that the dominant phyla were Firmicutes and Proteobacteria and that the dominant genera were Lactobacillus and Weissella. With the application of silage additives and the processing of fermentation, there was a remarkable change in the composition and function of the bacterial community. The variation of the fermentation parameters and CNCPS nitrogen fractions in the MOL silages caused by malic acid and sucrose might be attributed to the dynamic and dramatic changes of the bacterial community.

Abstract
To overcome the structural complexity and improve the bioconversion efficiency of Pennisetum purpureum into bioethanol or/and biomethane, the effects of ensiling pretreatment, NaOH pretreatment, and their combination on digestion performance and mass flow were comparatively investigated. The coproduction of bioethanol and biomethane showed that 65.2 g of ethanol and 102.6 g of methane could be obtained from 1 kg of untreated Pennisetum purpureum, and pretreatment had significant impacts on the production; however, there is no significant difference between the results of NaOH pretreatment and ensiling-NaOH pretreatment in terms of production improvement. Among them, 1 kg of ensiling-NaOH treated Pennisetum purpureum could yield 269.4 g of ethanol and 144.5 g of methane, with a respective increase of 313.2% and 40.8% compared to that from the untreated sample; this corresponded to the final energy production of 14.5 MJ, with the energy conversion efficiency of 46.8%. In addition, for the ensiling-NaOH treated Pennisetum purpureum, the energy recovery from coproduction (process III) was 98.9% higher than that from enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation only (process I) and 53.6% higher than that from anaerobic digestion only (process II). This indicated that coproduction of bioethanol and biomethane from Pennisetum purpureum after ensiling and NaOH pretreatment is an effective method to improve its conversion efficiency and energy output.

Abstract
Modeling of anaerobic digestion (AD) is crucial to better understand the process dynamics and to improve the digester performance. This is an essential yet difficult task due to the complex and unknown interactions within the system. The application of well-developed data mining technologies, such as machine learning (ML) and microbial gene sequencing techniques are promising in overcoming these challenges. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of 6 ML algorithms using genomic data and their corresponding operational parameters from 8 research groups to predict methane yield. For classification models, random forest (RF) achieved accuracies of 0.77 using operational parameters alone and 0.78 using genomic data at the bacterial phylum level alone. The combination of operational parameters and genomic data improved the prediction accuracy to 0.82 (p<0.05). For regression models, a low root mean square error of 0.04 (relative root mean square error =8.6%) was acquired by neural network using genomic data at the bacterial phylum level alone. Feature importance analysis by RF suggested that Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fibrobacteres, and Spirochaeta were the top 5 most important phyla although their relative abundances were ranging only from 0.1% to 3.1%. The important features identified could provide guidance for early warning and proactive management of microbial communities. This study demonstrated the promising application of ML techniques for predicting and controlling AD performance.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to determine the ability of the Lactobacillus buchneri M B/00077 strain to degrade xylan, its impact on the quality of silage made from the lignocellulosic biomass of Spartina pectinata L., as well as the efficiency of biogas production. In the model in vitro conditions the L. buchneri M B/00077 strain was able to grow in a medium using xylan as the sole source of carbon, and xylanolytic activity was detected in the post-culture medium. In the L. buchneri M B/00077 genome, genes encoding endo-1,4-xylanase and β-xylosidase were identified. The silages prepared using L. buchneri M B/00077 were characterized by a higher concentration of acetic and propionic acids compared to the controls or the silages prepared with the addition of commercial xylanase. The addition of bacteria increased the efficiency of biogas production. From the silages treated with L. buchneri M B/00077, 10% and 20% more biogas was obtained than from the controls and the silages treated with commercial xylanase, respectively. The results of the current study indicated the strain L. buchneri M B/00077 as being a promising candidate for further application in the field of pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
Zanthoxylum bungeanum meal (ZBM) is the by-product of Z. bungeanum seeds after pressing. It is restricted as a feed additive because it contains stimulating and potentially harmful substances, which are alkylamides and alkaloids. This study described the use of Lactobacillus paracasei and L. acidipiscis isolated from ZBM in solid-state fermentation of ZBM to reduce the concentration of undesirable alkylamides and alkaloids. By optimizing the substrate and fermentation conditions, the minimum contents of alkylamide and alkaloid were 2.96 and 3.20 mg/g, and the degradation rates reached 51.86% and 39.59%, respectively. Moreover, the biotransformation pathways of hydroxyl-α-sanshool and chelerythrine were established by identifying the metabolites. Bacterial diversity was shift significantly, and the relative abundance of Lactobacillus increased from 0.10% to 99.0% after fermentation. In conclusion, this study introduced a reliable strategy for processing ZBM as a feed additive.

Abstract
Three catch crop species, ryegrass, forage rape and black oat, were grown between successive rotations of maize to reduce nitrogen leaching due to maize fertilization with digested dairy manure. Catch crops showed a high nutrient uptake, but with a wide range, depending on the year and the specie. Ensiling was shown to be a feasible storing method increasing catch crop methane production per hectare between 14-36% compared with fresh catch crop. In semi-continuous co-digestion experiments, methane production was increased between 35-48%, in comparison with anaerobic digestion of dairy manure alone. Catch crops were shown to be a good co-substrate, being a sustainable option to prevent leaching of nutrients to the environment, thus closing the loops from production to utilization by optimal recycling measures.

Abstract
As an emerging technology, high solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) was usually hampered by the long lag phase of methane production. A reasonable starting mode enabled fast startup in HSAD, which was scarcely reported. This study established 5 starting modes for HSAD with pig manure. The results showed that system T4 (biogas slurry once and then autologous leachate reflux) had the shortest lag phase. Starting modes had a total effect of 36.6% on gas production, among which 17.1% affected gas production directly and 19.5% affected it through other factors. About 12/17 of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and 3 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were effectively reduced during HSAD. System T4 had the highest microbial diversity and the largest number of unique OTUs. MGEs explained most for ARGs variation (>50%), followed by microbial community. Most of the potential host genera for ARGs belonged to Firmicutes phyla, which could be decreased by starting modes.

Abstract
Low contents of water-soluble carbohydrates and/or low indigenous microbial activity in wilted maize stover (WMS) usually hinder the establishment of the ensiling process, thereby resulting in a low biogas production because of high loss of dry matter (DM). To enhance the biological activity and substrate biodegradability, this study applied the synergistic regulation of sucrose (carbon source) and increasing levels of urea (nitrogen source) during the ensiling process of WMS. Compared with the application of only sucrose, a higher organic acid content (lactic acid (85 g/kg-DM) and acetic acid (14 g/kg-DM)) and higher degradation ratios for lignocellulose (hemicellulose (28%), cellulose (22%), and lignin (17%)) were observed with urea applications of 1.7% (DM) and 3.9% (DM), respectively. This was caused by the enhanced activities of the hetero-fermenter (Weissella) and cellulolytic bacteria (Cellulosimicrobium). A simultaneous addition of urea and sucrose during the ensiling of WMS increased the specific methane yield by 11.2%-21.1% in comparison to raw WMS. Moreover, an economic cost estimation revealed that this approach could be an effective storage strategy for the efficient production of methane when employing a 1.7% (DM) urea application.

Abstract
Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is extremely sensitive to both boron (B) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies. Application of chemical fertilizers is generally considered to be an effective agronomic practice to improve crop productivity, and it also affects soil bacterial community. However, there are few studies of the effects of balanced B and P fertilizer applications on crop yield and bacterial communities. In the present study, field experiments with five P application rates (0, 45, 90, 135 and 180 kg P2O5 ha-1) and four B application rates (0, 4.5, 9 and 18 kg Na2B4O7·5H2O ha-1) were conducted in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 to investigate their effects on seed yield and P use efficiency (PUE) of B. napus. The smallest seed yields were obtained when B or P fertilizers were not applied (P90B0 or P0B9). Balanced B and P applications benefitted yields. The P45B4.5 treatment produced greater seed yield and PUE than the P45B18 treatment, and the P180B18 treatment produced greater seed yield and PUE than the P180B4.5 treatment. Sequencing of 16S rRNA genes revealed that the P90B9 treatment had greater soil bacterial diversity, and a different bacterial community composition, compared with the P90B0 or P0B9 treatments. Overall, our results underline the importance of balanced B and P nutrition for maximal seed yield of B. napus and the effects of B and P fertilizers on the soil bacterial community of B. napus.

Abstract
Synthetic fungicides are eco-unfriendly to agriculture and the environment. Agricultural Jiaosu (AJ), which originates from organic wastes, has the potential to be a substitute for synthetic fungicides. In this study, the characteristics of AJ and its antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea were investigated for the first time. AJ was rich in lactic acid (4.46 g/L), acetic acid (1.52 g/L), Lactobacillus (72.45%) and Acetobacter (15.23%), which was a microbial ecosystem consisting of acid-based substances (AS) and beneficial microorganisms (BM). The results of the antifungal assays suggested that B. cinerea was effectively inhibited by AJ, with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 9.24%. AJ showed the strongest and most-lasting inhibitory effect compared to cell-free supernatant and microbial solution of AJ, indicating that AS and BM and their synergistic effect contributed to the antifungal activity of AJ. Two-step inhibition’ is an antifungal mode of AJ. Firstly, AS not only inhibited the pathogen directly but also provided a dominant niche for BM of AJ. Then, BM in AJ, especially Acetobacter, proliferated and metabolized acetic acid continuously. Thus, AJ achieved high-efficiency and long-acting inhibition. AJ is a promising biological agent considering its features of an eco-friendly, low-cost and easy-to-operate biological agent in rural areas.![]()

Abstract
Simple Summary Wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) is a feed containing high moisture and rapidly digestible, non-forage fiber and protein for dairy cows, that is difficult to preserve. The use of corn stover as roughage by ruminants is limited by its poor digestibility. Total mixed ration (TMR) silage is an ensiling mixed feed that can fully mix forage and concentrate in a specific ratio to satisfy the nutritional needs of dairy cows, which has become an effective method of preservation of high-moisture byproducts. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different additives on the fermentation quality, bacterial community, and aerobic stability of TMR silage containing WCGF and corn stover. Inoculation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) + fibrolytic enzyme (EN) and LAB improved aerobic stability of TMR silages indicated by higher and more stable LA and AA contents, a smaller rise in pH, and yeast count than other silages. Total mixed ration silage inoculated the LAB + EN and LAB can become an effective method of preserving high-moisture WCGF and corn stover with poor digestibility. Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different additives on the fermentation quality, bacterial community, and aerobic stability of total mixed ration (TMR) silage containing wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) and corn stover. The TMR was ensiled with four treatments: (1) no additive (control); (2) lactic acid bacteria (LAB); (3) fibrolytic enzyme (EN); (4) LAB + EN. The EN and LAB + EN decreased the neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents. Additives led to a higher lactic acid (LA) content (p < 0.0001) compared to control at all ensiling times. Silages inoculated with LAB and LAB + EN had higher dry matter (p = 0.0007), LA (p < 0.0001) and acetic acid (AA) contents (p < 0.0001) compared to control. The LAB and LAB + EN had significantly lowest ammonia nitrogen among the treatments, while no significant difference occurred after days 7 of ensiling. Silages treated with LAB and LAB + EN had a higher LAB count (p < 0.0001) and a lower pH, yeast, and mold counts compared to other silages. The LAB and LAB + EN greatly increased the portions of Firmicutes and Lactobacillus (p < 0.0001, and p < 0.0001, respectively) and reduced undesirable bacteria. Inoculation with LAB + EN and LAB improved aerobic stability of TMR silages indicated by higher and more stable LA and AA contents, smaller rise in pH, and yeast count than other silages. The LAB + EN and LAB reduced microbial diversity and improved the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of TMR silage containing WCGF and corn stover.

Abstract
Broussonetia papyrifera (B. papyrifera) has been proposed to improve silage fermentation due to its high content of protein and abundant active plant extracts. Thus, dynamic profiles of fermentation quality and bacterial community of B. papyrifera mixing with perennial ryegrass in different ratios: 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, and 50:50 were examined during 60-d fermentation. Results showed that adding perennial ryegrass increased soluble carbohydrate content and lactic acid production in silage and decreased pH and population of epiphytic microorganisms. Adding ryegrass exerted a remarkable effect on the silage bacterial community with a dramatic decrease in the abundance of Enterobacter. Spearman's rank correlation showed that silage lactic acid concentration was positively correlated with Lactobacillus and Stenotrophomonas abundance, while ammonia nitrogen concentration was positively correlated with the abundance of Enterobacter. In conclusion, B. papyrifera ensiled with perennial ryegrass could improve B. papyrifera silage quality and provide high-quality forage resources for sustainable ruminant livestock production.
