Abstract
The combination of raw animal skin manufacturing processes involves the use of large amounts of chemicals, resulting in the generation of complex and highly polluted tannery wastewater. In this context, the high concentration of chloride in tannery wastewater represents a crucial bottleneck. Indeed, sodium chloride, commonly used in tannery industry to prevent skin rot, increases the concentration of chlorides up to 50 %. At the same time, most of the advanced oxidation processes usually employed in tannery wastewater treatment to remove recalcitrant COD involve the use of conditioning agents, thus increasing the overall concentration of chlorides in the treated effluent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrochemical peroxidation process (ECP) efficiency in the treatment of tannery wastewater without changing pH, to improve Fenton technology by avoiding the use of chemicals. The influence of different electric currents on COD and color removal was investigated. The characterization of the produced sludge was conducted through FTIR, SEM and XRD analysis, exploring the morphology and composition of precipitate, depending on the applied current. Although an electrical current of 750 mA yields the highest COD and color removal efficiency (69.7 % and 97.8 %, respectively), 500 mA can be considered the best compromise because of energy consumptions. Iron oxides and hydroxides were generated during the ECP process, playing the role of coagulants through the absorption of organic and inorganic contaminants. The consumption of energy increased as a function of time and applied current; however, cost analysis showed that the electrodes contributed the most to the total cost of the process. In authors' knowledge, the application of ECP process as a tertiary treatment for the removal of recalcitrant COD in tannery wastewater represents a novelty in the literature and the results obtained can be considered as the basis for scaling up the process in future research.

Abstract
Developing adsorbent materials with high adsorptive dephosphorization (ADP) is significant for treating phosphate from aqueous solutions and eutrophic water. Herein, the MIL-101(Cr) framework was entrapped ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumbromide ionic liquid ([C4mem]+[Br]-) using a ship-in-a-bottle approach to obtain novel adsorbents [C4mem]+[Br]-@MIL-101(Cr) contained varied IL contents, namely C4mem@MIL-101. The characterization results revealed that the formed [C4mem]+[Br]- molecules interacted with the MIL-101(Cr) frameworks, enhanced their stability, and offered additional adsorption sites. The batch adsorptions of phosphate showed that the optimized C4mem@MIL-101 adsorbent loaded with ~ 7% IL-based N content had the highest phosphate absorbing capacity of ~ 200 mg/g, outperforming the pristine MIL-101(Cr) and other adsorbents. The ADP efficiency was facilitated in the acidic media, where the phosphate ions of H2PO4- and HPO42- captured onto the C4mem@MIL-101 via several interactions, including electrostatic attraction, H-bonds, and chemical interactions. In the meantime, the coexisting anions diminished the phosphate adsorption because they competed with the pollutants at adsorption sites. Furthermore, phosphate treatment under the continuous fixed-bed conditions showed that 1 g of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-mixed C4mem@MIL-101 pellets purified 25 l of water containing phosphate with a 1 mg/l concentration. The results suggest that the novel [C4mem]+[Br]-@MIL-101(Cr) structure had a high potential for treating phosphate in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Using traditional Chinese medicine residues as raw materials, different biochars (BC) were prepared through oxygen-limited pyrolysis at 300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C, and BC was ball-milled to produce ball-milled biochar (BMC). Using these adsorbents to adsorb the allelopathic autotoxic substance quercetin. The physical and chemical properties of various biochars derived from traditional Chinese medicine residues were characterized using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller-N2 surface areas (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). The study investigated the effects of the initial pH value, different humic acid concentrations, and multiple adsorption-desorption experiments on the removal of quercetin from the solution. The article discusses the adsorption mechanism of quercetin in solution by biochar from a traditional Chinese medicine residue, based on the results of adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm fitting. The findings indicate that increasing the pyrolysis temperature reduces the oxygen-containing functional groups of BC, enhances the aromaticity, and stabilizes the carbon structure. The pore structure of BMC becomes more complex after ball milling, which increases the number of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. Among the samples tested, BMC700 exhibits the best adsorption performance, with an adsorption capacity of 293.3 mg·g-1 at 318 K. The adsorption process of quercetin by BMC700 follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. The process is primarily a form of multimolecular layer adsorption. Its mechanism involves the pore-filling effect, hydrogen-bonding interaction, electrostatic interaction, and π-π coexistence, as well as the yoke effect. Additionally, they are highly recyclable and show promise in addressing continuous cropping issues.

Abstract
Agricultural waste biochar was widely used to absorb phosphorus (P) from eutrophicated water and soil remediation. However, the research on the reuse of the sorbed P on biochar in infertile saline soil is insufficient. Biochars derived from four kinds of agricultural wastes (cotton straws from two origins, maize stalk, and rice husk) were modified and applied to adsorb phosphate in waste water and then be reused in saline soil in this study. The co-modified method combining ball milling and metal coated treatment obtained the higher specific surface area (SSA) of ferrite/manganese modified-ball-milled biochars (Fe/Mn-BMBCs) (226.5-331.5 m2 g-1) than that of pristine biochars (14.02-30.35 m2 g-1) and ferrite/manganese modified biochar (Fe/Mn-BC) (223.7 m2 g-1), which could improve the pore structure of metal modified biochar. The phosphate adsorption capacity (qmax) of Fe/Mn-BMBCs with rich functional groups and high SSA were 44.0-53.8 mg g-1, which was 4.47-5.82 times higher than that of pristine biochars. Fe/Mn-BMBCs showed efficiently adsorption performance at low pH and high temperature. The application of BC to saline soil could promote the availability of P in saline soil. P-loaded biochars could afford P as a nutrient to promote the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in saline soil. The lettuce fresh weight in Fe/Mn-BMBC-P2 treated soil was 8.21 times higher than that grew in control check (CK) treatment. As a P element provider, P-loaded biochars not only improve saline soil fertility and crop productivity, but also convert the agricultural wastes and P in eutrophicated waters to the sustainable resource.

Abstract
Phosphorus (P) removal is a significant issue in wastewater treatment. This study applies Fe-Al composite coagulant to the advanced treatment of different P forms in biological effluent. For 90% total P removal, the dosage of FeCl3-AlCl3 composite coagulant reduces by 27.19% and 43.28% than FeCl3 and AlCl3 only, respectively. Changes in effluent P forms could explain the phenomenon of composite coagulant dosage reduction. The suspended P in the effluent of composite coagulant is easier removed by precipitation than single coagulant. In this study, the hydrolysis speciations of Fe3+, Fe2+, and Al3+ at a pH range are calculated by Visual MINTEQ. Changes in the morphology of metal hydroxides correlate with P removal at pH 4-9. Besides, analyses of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are performed on the coagulation precipitations. Fe2+ reacts directly with P to form flocs of Fe3(PO4)2, and Al2(SO4)3 assists in the sedimentation of the small-volume flocs. Al13 is a significant hydrolysis product of Al3+, and Fe and P would substitute for the peripheral AlVI of the Al13 structure to form stable Fe-O-Al covalent bonds.

Abstract
The need to minimize eutrophication in water bodies and the shortage of phosphate rock reserves has stimulated the search for sequestration and recovery of phosphate from alternative sources, including wastewater. In this study, aluminium dross (AD), a smelting industry waste/by-product, was converted to high-value material by encapsulation in calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) beads, viz. Ca-Alg-AD and utilized for adsorptive/uptake removal and phosphate recovery from an aqueous environment. Encapsulation of AD in alginate beads solves serious operational difficulties of using raw AD material directly due to density difference constraining efficient contact of AD with pollutants present in water and post-treatment recovery of AD material. The phosphate removal was evaluated in both batch and continuous flow operation modes. The batch adsorption study revealed 96.86% phosphate removal from 10 mg L-1 of initial phosphate concentration in 70 min of optimal contact time. Further, the phosphate removal potential of Ca-Alg-AD beads turned out to be independent of solution pH, with an average of 95.93 ± 1.40 % phosphate removal in the 2-9 pH range. The result reflects phosphate adsorption on Ca-Alg-AD beads following a second-order pseudo-kinetic model. Ca-Alg-AD beads-based adsorption followed Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. Further, a continuous packed bed column study revealed a total phosphate adsorption capacity of 1.089 mg g-1. The chemical composition, physical stability, and surface properties of Ca-Alg-AD beads were analyzed by means of state-of-the-art analytical techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA). These characterization techniques comprehend the mechanism and influence of surface properties and morphology on the phosphate adsorption behaviour, which induce the involvement of multiple mechanisms such as ligand complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction for phosphate adsorption on Ca-Alg-AD beads.

Abstract
In this study, the Fe-Mn oxide/mulberry stem biochar composite adsorbent (FM-MBC) was prepared and fully characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, BET, and XPS. The solution pH (3.0, 4.5, and 6.0), initial concentration of phosphorus (10, 20, and 30 mg L-1), adsorbent bed height (2, 3, and 4 cm), and solution flow rate (1, 2, and 3 mL min-1) were investigated to analyze the breakthrough curves. The results showed that the breakthrough time was shortened as the initial phosphorus concentration, the flow rate increased and the bed height decreased. Higher initial phosphorus concentrations, flow rates, and lower bed heights, led to a faster breakthrough of phosphate ions in the FM-MBC adsorbent. Additionally, it was observed that increasing the pH value was not conducive to the adsorption of phosphorus by the FM-MBC adsorbent. Dynamic adsorption data were fitted to four models (Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, Adams-Bohart, and Bed Depth Service Time), and the R2 values of the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models exhibited minimal variation, suggesting that the dynamic adsorption process of FM-MBC was rather intricate. The saturated fixed-bed column (including FM-MBC) was regenerated with NaOH or HCl, and it was found that a 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH solution had the best regeneration effect. XRD analysis showed that the reaction product between the FM-MBC composite and phosphate anions was Fe3(PO4)2·H2O. Moreover, the experimental results that FM-MBC can successfully be used to remove phosphorus from actual wastewater.

Abstract
In this study, calcium ferrites with different Ca : Fe atomic ratios (1 : 1, 1 : 2, 1 : 3 and 2 : 1) were prepared from Ca and Fe nitrates treated at 300, 700 and 900 °C and evaluated for phosphate adsorption and recovery from wastewater. TG, XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, SEM, VSM magnetic measurements, and BET analyses showed the formation of two different calcium ferrite phases, i.e., CaFe2O4 and Ca2Fe2O5 at 700 and 900 °C. The adsorption results indicated that the formation of calcium ferrite structure is critical for phosphate adsorption/recovery. Evaluation of the pH, initial phosphate concentration, contact time, coexisting ions and desorption conditions showed remarkable adsorption capacities of 62-75 mg g-1 for CaFe1:2-700 and 28-43 mg g-1 for CaFe1:2-900. The phosphate adsorption on the Ca ferrite surfaces is so strong that the recovery/desorption showed limited efficiencies, e.g., 15-39%.

Abstract
This work aims to develop an eco-sound nano-bio-hybrid sorbent using sustainable materials for sorptive elimination of congo red and phosphates from aquatic environment. An amphipathic biopolymer derivative, high DS guar gum benzoate (GGBN) was used for entrapment of as synthesized calcium carbonate nanoparticles using solvent diffusion nano-precipitation technique. Designer nano-biohybrids were developed upon experimenting with various materials stoichiometry. SEM, XRD and EDX studies confirmed near-uniform impregnation of rhombohedral calcium carbonate crystals throughout the biopolymer matrix. Average pore size distribution and surface area of final product Ca-GGBNC, were estimated from NDLFT and BET methods respectively. Analysis of adsorption findings acquired at study temperature 27 ± 2 °C showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Ca-GGBNC recorded qmax, 333.33 mg/g for congo red azo dye and that for phosphate was at 500 mg/g. Adsorptive removal was noted and both components followed pseudo second order kinetics. Intra-particle diffusion kinetics investigation disclosed that the boundary layer effect was prominent and the adsorption rates were not solely directed by the diffusion stage. Activation energy, Ea was to be estimated using Arrhenius equation at 56.136 and 47.015 KJ/mol for congo red and phosphates respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters(ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) revealed the spontaneous, feasible and endothermic sorption process. Owing to active surface area, spherical size, functional moiety and porous network, antibacterial properties of nanobiohybrid were persistent and MIC against E. coli and S. aureus were recorded at 200 μg/mL and 350 μg/mL respectively.

This study explored the potential of utilizing aluminum and yttrium amended (Al/Y amended) sewage sludge biochar (Al/Y-CSBC) for efficient fluoride removal from wastewater. The adsorption kinetics of fluoride on bimetallic modified Al/Y-CSBC followed the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Freundlich equation. Remarkably, the material exhibited excellent fluoride removal performance over a wide pH range, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 62.44 mg·g-1. Moreover, Al/Y-CSBC demonstrated exceptional reusability, maintaining 95% removal efficiency even after six regeneration cycles. The fluoride adsorption mechanism involved ion exchange, surface complexation, and electrostatic adsorption interactions. The activation and modification processes significantly increased the specific surface area of Al/Y-CSBC, leading to a high isoelectric point (pHpzc = 9.14). The incorporation of aluminum and yttrium metals exhibited a novel approach, enhancing the adsorption capacity for fluoride ions due to their strong affinity. Furthermore, the dispersing effect of biochar played a crucial role in improving defluoridation efficiency by enhancing accessibility to active sites. These findings substantiate the significant potential of Al/Y-CSBC for enhanced fluoride removal from wastewater.

Abstract
Phosphate fertilizers have been excessively applied in agricultural production, bringing the risk of phosphorus (P) loss to nearby river systems and low utilization efficiency. In this study, eggshell-modified biochars prepared by pyrolysis of eggshell and corn straw or pomelo peel were applied to soil for enhancing P immobilization and utilization. The structure and properties of modified biochars before and after P adsorption were analyzed using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption method, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The eggshell-modified biochar performed an excellent adsorption performance for P (up to 200 mg/g), which was well described by the Langmuir model (R2 > 0.969), showing monolayer chemical adsorption with homogenous surface. The Ca(OH)2 appeared on the surface of eggshell modified biochars and changed to Ca5(PO4)3(OH) and CaHPO4(H2O)2 after P adsorption. The release of immobilized P by modified biochar increased with decreased pH. In addition, pot experiments of soybean indicated that the combined application of modified biochar and P fertilizer significantly increased the content of microbial biomass P in soil, raising from 4.18 mg/kg (control group) to 51.6-61.8 mg/kg (treatment group), and plants height increased by 13.8-26.7%. Column leaching experiments showed that P concentration in the leachate decreased by 97.9% with the modified biochar application. This research provides a new perspective that the eggshell-modified biochar could serve as a potential soil amendment for enhancing P immobilization and utilization.

Abstract
Adsorption was an available way to eliminate Tetracycline (TC) from waste water. Suaeda biochar (800SBC) and iron modified biochar (Fe-800SBC) were prepared using pyrolysis under oxygen-limiting conditions. BET and SEM showed that the surface of Fe-800SBC was rougher, and the specific surface area (SBET) was 7 times that of 800SBC. There existed pore filling, ion exchange, metal ion complexation, hydrogen bonds and cation-π interaction mechanism. Both 800SBC and Fe-800SBC conformed to quasi-second-order kinetics model, belonged to chemisorption. Fe-800SBC conformed to Elovich model too. The adsorption process of 800SBC conformed to Freundlich and Sips L-F models, Fe-800SBC conformed to the Sips L-F and Temkin models, identifying the presence of physical and chemical adsorption during adsorption. Response surface method (RSM) was used to optimize important process parameters. The quadratic model was sufficient to predict TC removal response in the range of studied parameters.

Abstract
In this study, a composite of pond mud and lanthanum- and nano-zero valent iron-modified-biochar was investigated for its ability to adsorb methylene blue (MB) and sulfamethazine (SMZ). La-modified attapulgite and nano-zero valent iron (surface area enhanced by 43.7% via Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis) were successfully loaded onto the straw-sediment biochar (BC) surface. With the increase in pyrolysis temperature, the biocompatibility yield, the H, O, and N content, and the ratio of carbon elements decreased, while the pH value, surficial micropores, C element, and ash content increased. The biocarbon small molecules were gradually and tightly ordered, and the organic groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl groups, and carbon oxygen double bonds were gradually lost or disappeared. The original Fe-BC had more phenolic hydroxyl groups forming an intermolecular hydrogen bond than others with a higher adsorption capacity possibly through the Schiff base reaction. The effect of various pH (2-9), temperature (15-35 °C), and initial concentration (1-25 mg L-1) on adsorption was investigated. pH and temperature were the main factors governing the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was observed at pH 4. The adsorption performances for MB followed the order Fe-BC > La-BC > BC, and the maximum removal rate was over 98.45% with pH = 7. The three types of BC dosages between 0.2 (6.67 g L-1) and 0.4 g showed a removal rate of 99% for MB. The adsorption capacity of Fe-BC, La-BC, and BC for MB was 2.201, 1.905, and 2.401 mg L-1 with pH = 4, while 4.79, 4.58, and 5.55 mg g-1 were observed with BC dosage at 0.025 g. For SMZ, the higher the temperature, the better the adsorption effect, and it reaches saturation at approximately 25 °C. To further evaluate the nature of adsorption, Langmuir/Freundlich/Temkin models were tested and the adsorption capacities were evaluated on the surface of the BC composite. The three modified materials were physisorbed to SMZ, while MB was chemisorbed. For MB, the adsorption performance of BC is the best < 0.2 g (6.67 g L-1) at pH 7.0 at 35 °C. The Elovich model was more suitable for MB, while the Freundlich and Temkin models could better fit the adsorption process of MB. The preparatory secondary dynamics equation and Langmuir equation were more compliant for SMZ, and the saturated adsorption capacities of straw-modified, La-BC, and Fe-BC reached 5.699, 6.088, and 5.678 mg L-1, respectively.

Abstract
The surge in kitchen waste production is causing food-borne disease epidemics and is a public health threat worldwide. Additionally, the effectiveness of conventional treatment approaches may be hampered by KW's high moisture, salt, and oil content. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising new technology to convert waste biomass into environmentally beneficial derivatives. This study used simulated KW to determine the efficacy of hydrothermal derivatives (hydrochar) with different salt and oil content, pH value, and solid-liquid ratio for the removal of cadmium (Cd) from water and identify their high heating value (HHV). The findings revealed that the kitchen waste hydrochar (KWHC) yield decreased with increasing oil content. When the water content in the hydrothermal system increased by 90%, the yield of KWHC decreased by 65.85%. The adsorption capacity of KWHC remained stable at different salinities. The KWHC produced in the acidic environment increases the removal efficiency of KWHC for Cd. The raw material was effectively transformed into a maximum HHV (30.01 MJ/kg). HTC is an effective and secure method for the resource utilization of KW based on the adsorption capacity and combustion characteristic indices of KWHC.

Abstract
Iron (Fe)/iron oxide-modified biochar has practicable adsorption capability for phosphorus (P), but it is expensive. In this study, we synthesized novel low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbents co-pyrolyzed biochars using Fe-rich red mud (RM) and peanut shell (PS) wastes via a one-step pyrolysis process for removing P from pickling wastewater. The preparation conditions (heating rate, pyrolysis temperature, and feedstock ratio) and P adsorption behaviors were systematically investigated. In addition, a series of characterization and approximate site energy distribution (ASED) analyses were conducted to understand the P adsorption mechanisms. The magnetic biochar (BR7P3) with m (RM):m (PS) of 7:3 prepared at 900°C and 10 °C/min had a high surface area (164.43 m2/g) and different abundant ions (including Fe3+, and Al3+). In addition, BR7P3 exhibited the best P removal capability (142.6 mg/g). The Fe2O3 from RM was successfully reduced to Fe0, which was easily oxidized as Fe3+ to precipitate with H2PO4-. The electrostatic effect, Fe-O-P bonding, and surface precipitation were the main mechanisms of P removal. ASED analyses revealed that high distribution frequency and solution temperature led to a high P adsorption rate of the adsorbent. Therefore, this study provides new insight into the waste-to-wealth strategy by transforming PS and RM into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent P adsorption capability and environmental adaptability.

Abstract
Based on the best dehydration effect, this study compared the adsorption phosphorus effect of sludge biochar after sludge conditioning with FeCl3, KMnO4, and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM). This provided insights into the effects of chemical conditioning during the sludge dewatering stage on the overall phosphate adsorption of the dewatered sludge biochar. The phosphorus adsorption mechanism of the dewatering sludge biochar was analysed by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Under the optimal pyrolysis temperature (300°C), the phosphate adsorption capacity of FeCl3-conditioned sludge biochar (SB-FeCl3) was increased 77 times of the unconditioned sludge biochar. In different solution environments (e.g. pH and coexisting anions), Phosphate adsorption of SB-FeCl3 was srtrongest when the pH of 9 and contained CO32-. Through the analysis of surface elements and functional groups, it was explained that the phosphorus removal effect of SB-FeCl3 comes from abundant active sites containing iron. Phosphorus release occurred in sludge biochar (SB) during the study. SB-FeCl3 solved SB the release of phosphorus, and improved the adsorption capacity of phosphorus.

Abstract
Due to eutrophication, removing phosphate ions from wastewater has received a lot of attention. In order to improve the phosphorus adsorption capacity of the material, this study used biomass pyrolysis to create a series of biochars modified with metal chloride ions. In accordance with adsorption tests, lanthanum-loaded biochar (LCBC) had a significant phosphorus adsorption capacity of approximately 666.67 mg/g, which was 30 times greater than that of pristine biochar. Adsorption kinetic analysis revealed that the LCBC's adsorption process could be fitted to the pseudo-secondary kinetic equation, indicating that chemical processes were primarily responsible for controlling the adsorption process. Zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the main adsorption mechanism of LCBC for phosphate removal was electrostatic attraction of protonated H+ with negatively charged mono-hydrogen phosphate and dihydrogen phosphate ions and complexation reaction of the C=O on the carboxyl group and P=O on the phosphate group with the oxygen on the phosphate group and hydroxyl group. According to regeneration performance results, LCBC performed relatively better than as-prepared adsorbents, and the phosphate removal rate was approximately 75.1% after the fifth regeneration cycle. The study provided a potential approach for creating and preparing an adsorbent with high adsorption for phosphate removal.

Abstract
Excessive phosphate content input into natural water can lead to the waste of resource and eutrophication. Biochar is a kind of low-cost adsorbent. However, its adsorption capacity for phosphate is low. In order to solve this problem, Fe compound-modified fly ash/cotton stalk biochar composites (Fe-FBC) were prepared through co-pyrolyzed fly ash and cotton stalk at 800℃, followed by infiltration of FeSO4 solution. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential. After modification, the hydrophilicity and polarity of Fe-FBC increased. In addition, the pore volume, specific surface area, and surface functional groups were significantly improved. The adsorption behavior of Fe-FBC for the removal of phosphate from water can be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Sips isotherm adsorption model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 47.91 mg/g. Fe-FBC maintained a high adsorption capacity in the pH range of 3-10. The coexisting anions (NO3-, SO42-, and Cl-) had negligible effects on phosphate adsorption. The adsorption mechanisms of Fe-FBC include electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, surface complexation, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the desorption process of phosphate was investigated, indicating that the phosphate-saturated Fe-FBC could use as slow-release phosphate fertilizer. This study proposed a potentially environmental protection and recycling economy approach, which consists of recycling resources and treating wastes with wastes.

Abstract
Glyphosate has significant adverse effects on creature and ecological balance. Therefore, the efficient treatment of glyphosate wastewater is of great significance. In this study, nano calcium peroxide (n-CaO2) was loaded onto activated sludge biochar (SBC), and then Fe(II) was added to construct a Fenton-like system (n-CaO2/SBC/Fe(II)). SBC played the role of both a dispersant and catalyst, which greatly improved the removal capability of glyphosate. The removal efficiency of glyphosate in the n-CaO2/SBC/Fe(II) system was as high as 99.6%. The persistent free radicals (PFRs) on SBC can promote the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in the reaction system, and Fe(II) can be maintained at about 15 mg L-1 until the reaction reached equilibrium. Due to the synergistic effect of Fe(II) hydrolysis and SBC catalysis, n-CaO2/SBC/Fe(II) system can effectively remove glyphosate in a wide initial pH range (4.0-10.0), and the pH of the reaction system can be remained in a suitable environment (4.0-6.0) for Fenton-like reaction. Advanced oxidation and chemical precipitation were the main mechanisms for the removal of glyphosate. Most of glyphosate could be oxidized into H2PO-4 anions by breaking the bonds of C-P and C-N, and the H2PO-4 can be further adsorbed and bounded on the surface of the composites. This system overcomes the shortcomings of pH rising and Fe(III) precipitation in the CaO2-based oxidation systems, and realizes the efficient and complete degradation for glyphosate.

Synthesis of FeOOH-Loaded Aminated Polyacrylonitrile Fiber for Simultaneous Removal of Phenylphosphonic Acid and Phosphate from Aqueous Solution. Polymers (Basel) 2023; 15:polym15081918. Abstract
Phosphorus is one of the important metabolic elements for living organisms, but excess phosphorus in water can lead to eutrophication. At present, the removal of phosphorus in water bodies mainly focuses on inorganic phosphorus, while there is still a lack of research on the removal of organic phosphorus (OP). Therefore, the degradation of OP and synchronous recovery of the produced inorganic phosphorus has important significance for the reuse of OP resources and the prevention of water eutrophication. Herein, a novel FeOOH-loaded aminated polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANAF-FeOOH) was constructed to enhance the removal of OP and phosphate. Taking phenylphosphonic acid (PPOA) as an example, the results indicated that modification of the aminated fiber was beneficial to FeOOH fixation, and the PANAF-FeOOH prepared with 0.3 mol L-1 Fe(OH)3 colloid had the best performance for OP degradation. The PANAF-FeOOH efficiently activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of PPOA with a removal efficiency of 99%. Moreover, the PANAF-FeOOH maintained high removal capacity for OP over five cycles as well as strong anti-interference in a coexisting ion system. In addition, the removal mechanism of PPOA by the PANAF-FeOOH was mainly attributed to the enrichment effect of PPOA adsorption on the fiber surface's special microenvironment, which was more conducive to contact with SO4•- and •OH generated by PDS activation. Furthermore, the PANAF-FeOOH prepared with 0.2 mol L-1 Fe(OH)3 colloid possessed excellent phosphate removal capacity with a maximal adsorption quantity of 9.92 mg P g-1. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of the PANAF-FeOOH for phosphate were best depicted by pseudo-quadratic kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model, showing a monolayer chemisorption procedure. Additionally, the phosphate removal mechanism was mainly due to the strong binding force of iron and the electrostatic force of protonated amine on the PANAF-FeOOH. In conclusion, this study provides evidence for PANAF-FeOOH as a potential material for the degradation of OP and simultaneous recovery of phosphate.

Abstract
The immobilized lanthanum-modified biomass ash gel ball (CS-La-BA) was prepared with lanthanum chloride, biomass ash, and chitosan to remove phosphorus from water. CS-La-BA was characterized by several analytical techniques. SEM-EDS results showed that CS-La-BA has a well-developed pore structure and abundant adsorption sites. The surface area of BET is 75.46 m2/g and the pore size is mostly at 1.84 nm, indicating that it is a composite porous material with abundant microporous structure. The presence of La on biomass ash and the charge property of CS-La-BA were determined by XRD and zeta potential, and the adsorption mechanism of CS-La-BA on phosphate, including precipitation, electrostatic adsorption, ligand exchange, and complexation mechanism, was revealed by FTIR and XPS. The effects of pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, initial phosphorus concentration, adsorption time, and coexisting ions on the phosphorus uptake performance of CS-La-BA were discussed. The adsorption experiment results show that the phosphorus removal rate of CS-La-BA can reach 95.6%. Even after six desorption and regeneration experiments, the phosphorus removal rate still reaches 68.13%, which indicates that CS-La-BA has good phosphorus adsorption performance and desorption and regeneration capacity. The phosphorus adsorption process of CS-La-BA conforms to the Freundlich isotherm adsorption equation and general-order kinetic model. The internal diffusion of the adsorption process is dominant, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 31.73 mg/g (25 ℃). Thermodynamic experiments show that the adsorption process of phosphorus by CS-La-BA is a spontaneous entropy increase process.

Abstract
To solve the problems such as water eutrophication caused by excess phosphorus, the potential residual value of aluminum sludge was fully exploited and its phosphate adsorption capacity was further improved. In this study, twelve metal-modified aluminum sludge materials were prepared by co-precipitation method. Among them, Ce-WTR, La-WTR, Y-WTR, Zr-WTR, and Zn-WTR showed excellent adsorption capacity for phosphate. The adsorption performance of Ce-WTR on phosphate was twice that of the native sludge. The enhanced adsorption mechanism of metal modification on phosphate was investigated. The characterization results showed that the increase in specific surface area after metal modification was 9.64, 7.5, 7.29, 3, and 1.5 times, respectively. The adsorption of phosphate by WTR and Zn-WTR was in the accordance with Langmuir model, while the others were more following the Freundlich model (R2 > 0.991). The effects of dosage, pH, and anion on phosphate adsorption were investigated. The surface hydroxyl groups and metal (hydrogen) oxides played an important role in the adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism involves physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and hydrogen bonding. This study provides new ideas for the resource utilization of aluminum sludge and theoretical support for preparing novel adsorbents for efficient phosphate removal.

Abstract
Design of low-cost and high-removal efficiency phosphate adsorbents is of great significance for the control of eutrophication. In this study, fly ash and metakaolin were used as raw materials to evaluate the capability of phosphate adsorption and to investigate the mechanism of phosphate adsorption. The results of comparing the adsorption effect of geopolymers prepared with different modulus of alkali activator showed that the removal efficiency of phosphate in water at 0.8 M was on average 30.33% higher than 1.2 M. Therefore, FA + MK-0.8 had the maximum removal efficiency of 94.21% for phosphate in water with the maximum adsorption capacity of 36.02 mg/kg. In addition, the adsorption of phosphate could be well fitted by pseudo-second-order model and the process was mainly controlled by film diffusion. The alkali activation process can destroy the octahedral structure of the raw material, so the geopolymer are mainly tetrahedral in structure. Interestingly, new zeolite structures were formed in the mineral crystal phase of FA + MK-0.8, which may facilitate the adsorption of phosphate by geopolymers. Furthermore, the combined FTIR and XRD analysis results indicated that the underlying mechanisms of phosphate adsorption were electrostatic gravitation, ligand exchange, and surface complexation. This research not only synthesizes low-cost and high removal efficiency wastewater purification materials, but also provides a promising application for the elimination and resource utilization of industrial solid waste.

Abstract
A new low-cost material with a polymeric base formed from sodium silicate was developed. The material presents a nanostructured, highly rich iron surface with a large phosphorus retention capacity and potential reuse as a crop fertilizer. In the present study, we demonstrate that iron is the element that acts as an adsorbent for phosphate, while the polymeric base functions exclusively as a support for iron. The iron is uniformly adsorbed on the surface of the material, forming nanostructures, which ensure that iron works similarly to nanoparticles in solution but avoid other problems, such as particle agglomeration or the difficulty of separating them after the removal process. Materials were characterised by SEM, EDS, N2 sorption, and image processing, and the effect of pH, ionic strength, and temperature was studied. Sorption kinetics were analysed using Boyd's diffusion model, and adsorption equilibria were studied using several adsorption models. A maximum iron adsorption on the polymeric base of 23.9 ± 0.3 mg Fe∙g-1 was found, while maximum phosphorus adsorption was 366 ± 21 mg P∙g-1 Fe. Thus, phosphorus is recovered from the aqueous medium with an inexpensive material that has the potential to be used directly as a fertilizer.

Abstract
In this investigation, marigold flower-waste was activated with iron salts (MG-Fe), subsequently marigold plant extract (MG-Fe-Ex) for the adsorptive elimination of As3+ and As5+ from contaminated water. The governing factor such as medium pH, temperature, pollutant concentration, reaction time, adsorbent dose were considered for the study. The complete elimination of As3+/5+ was recorded with MG-Fe-Ex at pH 8.0, 90 min, 30 °C, dose 4 g/L, 20 mg/L of As3+/5+ and shaking rate 120 rpm, while under the identical experimental condition, MG-Fe exhibited 98.4% and 73.3% removal for As5+ and As3+, respectively. The MG-Fe-Ex contains iron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) as a result of iron ions reaction with plant bioactive molecules as evident from x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopic (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic study. The adsorption data of As3+/5+ on MG-Fe and MG-Fe-Ex was best fitted by pseudo-first order kinetic and freundlich isotherm except As5+ adsorption on MG-Fe-Ex that can be described by langmuir isotherm model. The prevailing mechanism in adsorption of As3+/5+ on both adsorbent might be hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction and complexation. From the above, it is confirmed that MG-Fe-Ex adsorbent has high potential and can be used for the adsorptive elimination of As3+/5+ from contaminated water in sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Abstract
Excess phosphate in water can cause eutrophication, which must be addressed. Despite many efforts devoted to the adsorptive removal of phosphate from water, the development of new adsorbents with high adsorption capacity is highly desirable. Herein, a novel nanocomposite was proposed for phosphate removal by confining hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) nanoparticles into a cellulose aerogel (CA) network named as HFO@CA. Benefiting from the characteristics of the low density and porous structure of CA, the internal surface of the nanocomposite is more accessible and thus improves the utilization of the HFO nanoparticles. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate the phosphate uptake by the prepared adsorbent. The maximum adsorption capacity of HFO@CA occurs at near-acidic pH. With increasing temperature, the composite adsorbent is more favorable for phosphate adsorption. Moreover, the hybrid aerogel exhibited fast kinetic behavior for phosphate removal, which could be accurately depicted by pseudo-second-order model. HFO@CA shows excellent adsorption selectivity in solutions containing competitive anions at higher levels. In addition, five cycles of the phosphate adsorption experiments without obvious capacity loss indicated that HFO@CA has great regenerability. These results demonstrate that HFO@CA has a wide field of application with good prospects in phosphate removal from wastewater, which also provides a new strategy to prepare adsorbents with excellent performance using renewable cellulose resources.

Abstract
This study successfully employed iron-carbon nanotubes (Fe-CNT) to recover phosphate (P) from water. We examined the effects of various iron concentrations denoted by Fe-CNT-1 and Fe-CNT-2 on P removal and compared them with pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The adsorption capacity of Fe-CNTs was much better than pristine CNTs. According to the high adsorption capacity, Fe-CNT-2 sample was very effective for P recovery and exhibits ∼7 times higher P removal efficiency than that of pristine CNTs. The characterization of the as-obtained adsorbent (Fe-CNT-2) and pristine CNTs were performed using X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, Field emission scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy detector (FESEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Transmission electron microscopy. Results demonstrated that iron oxide nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the surface of CNT. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies for P removal showed pseudo-second-order rate constants (R2 > 0.99) and the Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.99) respectively, thus revealing that the nature of adsorption was chemisorption. The estimated Langmuir adsorption capacity of Fe-CNT-2 was 36.5 mgP/g or 112 mg PO4/g at an equilibrium time of 3 h. The ionic strength provided by SO42-, NO3-, and Cl- demonstrated no considerable influence on phosphate adsorption. Moreover, the P adsorbed Fe-CNT-2 was efficiently recovered with different concentrations of desorbing reagents, such as NaOH and NaCO32-. Moreover, the findings of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis demonstrated that OH group played a major role in the P removal by Fe-CNT-2. The findings of this study demonstrate that Fe-CNT-2 had a great deal of application as an effective and stable adsorbent for the P recovery from aquatic environments.

Abstract
In order to explore the adsorption characteristics of phosphorus from molecules with different molecular structures and varying number of phosphate groups on metal-modified biochar, walnut shell biochar was modified with LaCl3 to prepare lanthanum-loaded biochar (BC-La). Adsorption of four polar components, namely phytic acid (IHP), adenosine-5'-disodium triphosphate (5-ATP), hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP), and sodium pyrophosphate (PP), was studied. The adsorption properties and mechanism of phosphorus sorption by BC-La were analyzed by SEM-EDS and FTIR for the different structures. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of BC-La for IHP, 5-ATP, HEDP, and PP was 85.85, 9.04, 15.80, and 14.45 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the polarity of organic phosphorus. The adsorption behavior conformed to the quasi second-order kinetic fitting equation, and the increase of temperature was conducive to the removal of all four phosphorus pollutants. BC-La adsorbs IHP and HEDP mainly through electrostatic attraction. The adsorption of 5-ATP and PP is dominated by complexation. The La-modified biochar has broad prospects in water remediation, which can provide a theoretical basis for removal of different forms of phosphorus pollutants and prevention and control of water eutrophication.

Abstract
Phosphorus widely existing in rainfall and wastewater impacts the water environment. In this study, sludge, cement block, and coal fly ash were employed as ceramsite material to synthesize Al-doped waste ceramsite (Al-ceramsite) for removing phosphate (PO43--P) from aqueous solutions. Batch static adsorption-desorption experiments were designed to investigate the effect of various parameters such as Al-ceramsite dosage, PO43--P concentration, temperature, initial pH, coexisting ions, and desorbents on the removal of PO43--P. Also, the fate of PO43--P removal efficiency in actual rainwater was studied through dynamic adsorption column experiments using Al-ceramsite. Results showed that Al-ceramsite could remove PO43--P efficiently under the optimum parameters as follows: Al-ceramsite dosage of 40 g/L, initial PO43--P concentration of 10 mg/L, temperature of 25 °C, and pH of 5. Besides that, the Al-ceramsite could completely remove PO43--P in actual rainwater, and the effluent PO43--P concentration was lower than the environmental quality standards for surface water Class Ⅰ (0.02 mg/L). The adsorption characteristics of Al-ceramsite on PO43--P by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were further explained. As a result, ligand exchange and complexation were confirmed as the main PO43--P removal mechanism of Al-ceramsite. Thus, Al-ceramsite was prepared from industrial waste and has shown excellent potential for phosphorus removal in practical applications.

Abstract
Iron-modified biochar can be used as an environmentally friendly adsorbent to remove the phosphate in wastewater because of its low cost. In this study, Fe-containing materials, such as zero-valent iron (ZVI), goethite, and magnetite, were successfully loaded on biochar. The phosphate adsorption mechanisms of the three Fe-modified biochars were studied and compared. Different characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were used to study the physicochemical properties of the biochars. The dosage, adsorption time, pH, ionic strength, solution concentration of phosphate, and regeneration evaluations were carried out. Among the three Fe-modified biochars, biochar modified by goethite (GBC) is more suitable for phosphate removal in acidic conditions, especially when the pH = 2, while biochar modified by ZVI (ZBC) exhibits the fastest adsorption rate. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities, calculated by the Langmuir-Freundlich isothermal model, are 19.66 mg g-1, 12.33 mg g-1, and 2.88 mg g-1 for ZBC, GBC, and CSBC (biochar modified by magnetite), respectively. However, ZBC has a poor capacity for reuse. The dominant mechanism for ZBC is surface precipitation, while for GBC and CSBC, the major mechanisms are ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. The results of our study can enhance the understanding of phosphate removal mechanisms by Fe-modified biochar and can contribute to the application of Fe-modified biochar for phosphate removal in water.

Abstract
The performance, mechanisms, and effects of various coexisting ions on phosphorus (P) adsorptive capture in biogas slurry using MgO-doped biochar (MBC) were investigated. The results revealed that in comparison to the pristine biochar, the introduction of MgO significantly improved the P adsorptive capture feasibility of MBC. In addition, the process of P capture by MBC was not affected by the initial pH of the solution. The process of P capture could reach equilibrium within 120 min and be simulated using both the pseudo-first-order and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. In addition, the highest P capture capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was approximately 129.35 mg/g. The coexisting of cations including NH4+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Cr3+ in higher concentrations of promoted P adsorptive capture through precipitation and ionic atmosphere effects. The presence of coexisting ions including SO42-, HCO3-, and fulvic acid (FA) had a certain inhibitory effect on the P adsorptive capture through competitive adsorption with phosphate. The existence of monovalent ions such as K+, Na+, Cl-, and NO3- had no significant effect on P adsorptive capture. The adsorptive capture of P by MBC was affected by various processes including electrostatic attraction and surface complexation, and the presence of different coexisting substances had different impacts on the P adsorption. Adding to these, the P in the biogas slurry was completely adsorbed by the MBC during the experiment, indicating that MBC is a promising composite in the engineering application for the capture of P from wastewater.

Abstract
Compared with the post-treatment of pollutants, such as the removal of phosphate from wastewater, it is more important to develop effective emission control strategies to reduce phosphate pollution. Phosphogypsum (PG) is a typical solid waste byproduct of phosphate production and contains high amounts of residual phosphate. In order to control the phosphate emissions during the recycling of PG aggregates for cemented backfill, another solid waste product—iron tailings (ITs)—was added during the preparation of backfill slurry. The results showed that the ITs effectively accelerated the phosphate removal in cemented PG backfill, enabling the quick reduction in the phosphate concentration to the discharge standard (<0.5 mg/L) within 15 min. This means that the emissions of phosphate to bleeding water were effectively controlled. The adsorption experiment showed that phosphate was adsorbed by the ITs, and the adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption model (R2 = 0.98) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.99), indicating that the phosphate adsorption of ITs was a monolayer chemical adsorption. Furthermore, an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test was performed on the backfill with the addition of ITs. Compared to the control group (without ITs), the UCS of backfill with 20% ITs increased from 1.08 MPa to 1.33 MPa, indicating that the addition of solid waste could be beneficial to the strength development of the backfill by mitigating the interference of phosphate with the hydration process. The backfill cured for 28 d was selected for the toxic leaching test, and the phosphate concentration in the leachates was always below 0.02 mg/L, indicating that ITs can effectively immobilize phosphate in backfill for a long time.

Abstract
In this work, engineered biochar decorated layered double hydroxides and cellulose nanocrystals (B-CuFe-CNC) biocomposites were synthesized by the facile ultrasonicated-co-precipitation technique. The biocomposite was investigated for purification of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) dye from water. The characterization results showed that the presence of CNC in biochar-layered double hydroxides resulted in a two-dimensional rod-like structure with excellent crystallinity, improved surface functionalities, and provides an attractive platform for the enhanced adsorption of azo anionic dye molecules. The adsorption system was appropriately demonstrated by the BBD-RSM (R2 > 0.994). The biocomposite exhibited higher EBT adsorption in the acidic pH range (2-5) due to strong electrostatic and chemical interactions. The kinetic and isotherm results were well demonstrated by pseudo-second order, Freundlich, and Redlich Peterson models. The maximum adsorption capacity of biocomposite was 876.2 mg/g achieved within 45 min. The spectroscopic analyses imply that the high removal of EBT by biocomposite is mainly governed by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and chemical/metal complexation mechanisms. The biocomposite maintained high EBT removal after six successive adsorption cycles and excellent dye adsorption in the different water matrices. The results suggest that tailoring biochar properties with layered double hydroxide and CNC is a promising way for the enhanced removal of dye contaminants from wastewater.

Abstract
It is imperative to remove phosphate from the aquatic system. This nutrient in excess can cause environmental problems such as eutrophication. Therefore, aiming to enhance phosphate removal, this work presents a novel adsorbent developed from the construction of Ca2+/Fe3+ layer double hydroxides (CaFe/LDH) supported onto biochar physically activated with CO2 [CaFe/biochar (CO2)]. Pristine biochar was produced from the pyrolysis of Eucalyptus saligna sawdust, activated with CO2, and then impregnated with CaFe/LDH. The CaFe/biochar (CO2) was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The characterization confirmed a proper synthesis of the new adsorbent. Experiments were conducted in the form of batch adsorption. Results indicated that the optimum pH and adsorbent dosage were 2.15 and 0.92 g L-1, respectively. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were also evaluated. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were better fitted by the pseudo n order and Freundlich models, respectively. Results also indicated a better adsorption capacity (99.55 mg·g-1) at 55 °C. The thermodynamic indicators depicted that the adsorption process was favorable, spontaneous, and endothermic. Overall, CaFe/biochar (CO2) could be potentially applied for the adsorptive removal of phosphate from an aqueous solution.

Abstract
Sewage sludge (SS) is increasingly used as an environment functional material to reduce or control pollution and improve plant growth because of the large amounts of carbon and essential plant nutrients in it. To achieve the best application results, it is essential to comprehensively review recent progress in SS utilization. This review aims to fill the gaps in knowledge by describing the properties of SS, and its usage as adsorbents, catalysts and fertilizers, and certain application mechanisms. Although SS generates several benefits for the environment and humans, many challenges still exist to limit the application, including the risks posed by potentially toxic substances (e.g., heavy metals) in SS. Therefore, future research directions are discussed and how to make SS applications more feasible in terms of technology and economy.

Abstract
Residual sludge is a significant waste resource, and the preparation of biochar achieves sludge disposal. Biochar has a high uptake capacity for phosphate. To prepare a sludge biochar adsorbent for phosphate, sludge was chemically and anaerobically treated in the presence of iron salts and pyrolyzed. We investigated the effects of the pyrolysis temperature and iron salt on the phosphate uptake capacity, finding that the pretreatment of the sludge with iron salts removed intrinsic phosphate, thus improving the uptake ability. The optimal adsorbent, denoted SB-B-Fe, was prepared by pyrolysis at 700 °C and subsequently modified with a 20 g/L iron-containing solution, yielding a phosphate uptake capacity of 0.5 mg/g. Further, the performance of SB-B-Fe remains high at pH 5–9 and is less affected by interfering anions. The sorption kinetics are consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting uptake by chemisorption, and the Langmuir model has a saturation capacity of 0.85 mg/g for uptake and prefers monolayer molecular uptake. The characterization showed that the adsorbent surface provided many uptake sites for phosphate and a high specific surface area. We hope that these findings will encourage the development of other value-added waste-based materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract
In this study, biochar derived from bamboo pretreated with aluminum salt was synthesized for the removal of two sulfonamide antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfapyridine (SPY), from wastewater. Batch sorption experiments showed that Al-modified bamboo biochar (Al-BB-600) removed both sulfonamides effectively with the maximum sorption capacity of 1200-2200 mg/kg. The sorption mechanism was mainly controlled by hydrophobic, π-π, and electrostatic interactions. Fixed bed column experiments with Al-modified biochar packed in different dosages (250, 500 and 1000 mg) and flow rates (1, 2 and 4 mL/min) showed the dosage of 1000 mg and flow rate of 1 mL/min performed the best for the removal of both SMX and SPY from wastewater. Among the breakthrough (BT) models used to evaluate the fixed bed filtration performance of Al-BB-600, the Yan model best described the BT behavior of the two sulfonamides, suggesting that the adsorption process involved multiple rate-liming factors such as mass transfer at the solid surface and diffusion Additionally, the Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model results indicated that Al-BB-600 can be efficiently used in fixed bed column for the removal of both SMX and SPY in scaled-up continuous wastewater flow operations. Therefore, Al-modified biochar can be considered a reliable sorbent in real-world application for the removal of SMX and SPY from wastewater.

Abstract
This paper presents a new, innovative technological approach, in line with Circular Economy principles, to the effective management of sludge generated during municipal wastewater treatment processes and subsequently used for biogas production. This approach allows for optimal, functional, and controlled cascade-type biotechnological thermal conversion of carbon compounds present in sewage sludge, later in solid digestate residues (after biogas production), and finally in the ash structure (after incineration, purposefully dosed nanostructural additives make the production of a useful solid product possible, especially for cyclic adsorption and slow release of nutrients (N, P, K) in the soil). The idea is generally targeted at achieving an innovative conversion cycle under a Circular Economy framework. In particular, it is based on an energy carrier (methane biogas) and direct energy production. The functionalized combustion by-products can be advantageous in agriculture. The use of ashes with nanostructural additives (halloysite, kaolinite) from combustion of sewage sludge after the anaerobic fermentation as an adsorbent of selected nutrients important in agriculture (Na+, K+, NO3-, SO42-, PO43-, Cl-) was verified at laboratory scale. The tests were carried out both for pure ash and for the ash derived from combustion with the purposeful addition of kaolinite or halloysite. The equilibrium conditions for nitrate, potassium, sodium, phosphate(V), sulphate(VI), and chloride ions from aqueous solutions with the use of the three adsorbent structures were determined. The obtained innovative results were interpreted theoretically with adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Jovanović). The most spectacular and clearly favorable results related to the influence of nanostructural additives in the process of sludge combustion, and formation of sorption surfaces under high temperature conditions were identified in the case of sorption-based separation of phosphate(V) ions (an increase from 1.13% to 61.24% with the addition of kaolinite, and even up to 76.19% with addition of halloysite).

Abstract
Achieving advanced treatment of phosphorus (P) to prevent water eutrophication and meet increasingly stringent wastewater discharge standard is an important goal of water management. In this study, a low-cost, high-efficiency phosphate adsorbent zirconium-modified biochar (ZrBC) was successfully synthesized through co-precipitation method, in which the biochar was prepared from the pyrolysis of peanut shell powder. ZrBC exhibited strong adsorption ability to low-concentration phosphate (< 1 mg·L-1) in water, and the phosphate removal reached 100% at the investigated dosage range (0.1-1.0 mg·L-1). The adsorption process could be described well by pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the phosphate adsorption by ZrBC was mainly a chemical adsorption and single-layer adsorption process. The calculated static maximum phosphate adsorption capacity was 58.93 mg·g-1 at 25 °C. The ligand exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and phosphate was the main mechanism for the phosphate adsorption on ZrBC. The presence of coexisting anions except for SO42- had little effect on the phosphate removal. At the column experiment, ZrBC showed superior treatment capacities for simulated secondary effluents and the breakthrough time for 0.5 mg·L-1 effluent phosphate concentration reached 190 h. ZrBC highlights the potential as an effective and environment-friendly adsorbent for the removal of low-concentration phosphate from secondary effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Abstract
Controlling eutrophication requires satisfying stringent phosphorus concentration standards. Metal-based adsorbents can effectively remove excess phosphorus from water bodies and achieve ultra-low phosphorus concentration control for wastewater. This review focuses on the material properties and phosphorus removal mechanism of metal-based adsorbents (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, La). There are significant differences in physical and chemical properties of different metal materials, due to the different preparation methods and synthetic materials. The main factors affecting phosphorus removal performance include particle size, crystal structure and pHPZC. Smaller particle size, more disordered crystal structure and higher pHPZC are more favorable for phosphorus removal. The main mechanism of phosphorus removal by metal-based adsorbents is ligand exchange, which makes it exhibit excellent adsorption capacity, fast kinetics and well selectivity for phosphate. In addition, in order to improve the phosphorus removal performance, the surface properties of the adsorbent (e.g., surface charge, surface area, and functional groups) can be effectively improved by dispersion of biochar carriers or combination of multiple metal materials. In further studies, we should improve the absorption capacity of the adsorbent under high pH conditions and the resistance to coexisting ion interference. Finally, in order to ensure the effective application of metal-based adsorbents in the phosphorus removal field, experimental scale should be expanded in future work to suit the actual water body conditions.

Abstract
The effects of initial total phosphorus (TP) concentration, current density, conductivity and initial pH value on the removal rate of TP and energy consumption, as well as the behaviour and mechanism of phosphorus removal, were investigated by sinusoidal alternating current coagulation (SACC). The flocs produced by SACC were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy. The thermodynamic and kinetic behaviours of phosphorus removal by iron sol adsorption were also studied in detail. In a self-made SACC reactor equipped with five sets of parallel iron electrodes spacing 10 mm, the removal rate of TP reached 90.9% for a pH 7.0 wastewater with 5 mg dm-3 TP (κ = 800 μS cm-1) after being treated for 60 min by applying 2.12 mA cm-2 sinusoidal alternating current. Compared with direct current coagulation (DCC), SACC exhibits a higher removal efficiency of phosphorus due to the stronger adsorption of the produced flocs. It was found that the adsorption in the SACC process follows pseudo-second-order kinetic with the involvement of the intra-particle model. The adsorption of iron sol to phosphorus was an endothermic and spontaneous process, and its adsorption behaviour can be characterized with Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson isothermal adsorption models. SACC may be employed for the treatment of more complex wastewater combined with biological and/or electrochemical techniques.

Abstract
This study successfully prepared a novel sulfur-doped nano zero-valent iron @biochar (BM-SnZVI@BC) by modifying corn stover biochar with Fe0 and S0 using a mechanical ball milling method for effective phosphorus (P) adsorption in the waterbody. Batch experiments revealed that BM-SnZVI@BC (BC/S0/Fe0 = 3:1:1) reached a Qmax of 25.00 mg P/g and followed PFO and Langmuir models. This work had shown that electrostatic attraction, surface chemical precipitation, hydrogen bonding, and ligand effects all contributed to P removal. Since the FeS layer mitigated the oxidation-induced surface passivation of nZVI, sulfidation significantly extended the lifetime of BM-SnZVI@BC, removing 84.4% of P even after 60 d aging in air. The regeneration experiments of composites showed that re-ball milling destroyed the surface iron oxide layer to improve the properties of the recovered material. This is an essential step in the design of P-removal agents to implement anti-aging and commercialization of adsorbents for engineering applications.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized polyacrylic acid (PAA)-Ca (Eu) nanoclusters as a luminescence sensor of phosphate ion by a complex method, and we aimed to achieve the quantitative detection of PO43− based on the sensitivity of the charge transfer band of Eu3+ to anionic ligand. The resulting PAA-Ca(Eu) nanoclusters showed a well-dispersed and a dot-like morphology, with an ultra-small diameter (the average size of 2.17 nm) under high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) observation. A dynamic light scattering particle size analyzer (DLS) showed a hydrodynamic size of 2.39 nm. The (PAA)-Ca (Eu) nanoclusters as a luminescence sensor showed a significantly higher sensitivity for PO43− than other anions (CO32−, SiO32−, SO42−, SO32−, Br−, Cl−, F−). The luminescence intensity displayed a linear increase (y = 19.32x + 74.75, R2 > 0.999) in a PO43 concentration range (0−10 mM) with the concentration of PO43− increase, and the limit of detection was 0.023 mM. The results showed good recovery rates and low relative standard deviations. These (PAA)-Ca (Eu) nanoclusters are hopeful to become a luminescence sensor for quantitatively detecting PO43−.

Abstract
Antibiotic-related environmental contamination directly threatens ecosystems and human health. Adsorption is an efficient and simple treatment process for removing antibiotics from water environments. Attapulgite (ATP) is a natural clay mineral extensively researched as a promising adsorbent material in the food industry, pharmaceutical sanitation, and organic wastewater treatment. Graphene oxide (GO) is widely employed in the treatment of organic wastewater due to its superior physicochemical properties. Here, using high temperature and HCl, ATP was activated (a-ATP), and a GO/a-ATP composite was prepared via hydrothermal synthesis. Using an adsorbent dosage of 0.75 g L-1, pH = 5, reaction time of 120 min, initial temperature = 35 °C, and initial TC concentration of 50 mg L-1, the adsorption capacity of GO/a-ATP for TC was 38.8 mg g-1. The pseudo-first-order model (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) model were fitted to the kinetic data, and yielded an R 2-value of PSO (0.99991) > PFO (0.9389), indicating that the adsorption process is related to chemisorption. Adsorption was also well described by the mixed-order (MO) model (R 2 = 0.9827), demonstrating that two rate-limiting adsorption reaction steps, diffusion and adsorption, occur; the former exerting greater influence. Equilibrium data was fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models; the Langmuir model gave the best fit, suggesting the adsorption process is a homogeneous and monolayer adsorption process. Various thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG 0) and standard enthalpy (ΔH 0) were also calculated, these results indicate the adsorption reaction is an endothermic process. Our study shows that GO/a-ATP is a promising adsorbent material for use in the adsorption of tetracycline in aquatic environments.

Abstract
Pyrolysis combined with land application for dewatered municipal sludge disposal revealed advantages in heavy metals solidification and resource utilization compared with other disposal technologies. In this study, utilizing dewatered municipal sludge for calcium-containing porous adsorbent preparation via pyrolysis was proposed and verified. After pyrolyzing at 900 ° C (Ca-900), the dewatered sludge obtained maximum adsorption capacity (83.95 mg P⋅ g-1) and the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order model and double layer model. Characteristic analysis showed the predominant adsorption mechanism was precipitation. Continuous column bed experiment indicated 2 g adsorbent could remove 4.27 mg phosphorus from tail wastewater with the initial phosphorus concentration of 1.03 mg ⋅ L-1. No heavy metals leaching was observed from Ca-900 adsorbent with pH value exceeding 1.0, and merely 1% addition of Ca-900 adsorbent (after actual water phosphorus adsorption) with soil could extremely promote the early growth of seedlings. Economic estimates demonstrated that this cost-effective modification could generate the most add-on value production. Based on these results, the strategy of 'one treatment but two uses' was proposed in this study, converting the wastes to resource and providing a native strategy for sludge disposal and resource recovery.
