Abstract
A continuous chemical-free green approach was investigated for the comprehensive reutilization of all components in herbal extraction residues (HERs), taking Glycyrrhiza uralensis residue (GUR) as an example. The GUR structural changes induced by mechanical extrusion which improve the specific surface area and enzyme accessibility of GUR. With 3 % pretreated GUR loading of high-tolerance Penicillium oxalicum G2. The reducing sugar yield of 11.45 g/L was achieved, along with an 81.06 % in situ enzymatic hydrolysis. Finally, 8.23 g/L bioethanol (0.40 g/g total sugar) was produced from GUR hydrolysates after 24 h fermentation of Pichia stipitis G32. The amount of functional medicinal ingredients extracted from GUR after hydrolysis (39.63 mg/g) was 37.69 % greater than that of un-pretreated GUR. In total, 1.49 g flavonoids, 294.36 U cellulase, and 14.13 g ethanol could be produced from 100 g GUR using this process, illustrating that this green and efficient process has the potential for industrial production.

Abstract
Valorization of herbal extraction residues (HERs) into value-added products is pivotal for the sustainability of Chinese medicine industry. Here, seven different enzymatic hydrolysates of dilute acid pretreated HERs were evaluated for lipid production by Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum. Among them, the highest sugar yield via hydrolysis and the maximum lipid production were obtained from Radix paeoniae alba residue (RPAR). More interestingly, high proportion of sugar polymers was disintegrated into fermentable sugars during the pretreatment step, allowing a cheap non-enzymatic route for producing sugars from RPAR. A repeated dilute acid pretreatment gained a high sugar concentration of 241.6 g/L through reusing the pretreatment liquor (PL) for four times. Biomass, lipid concentration, and lipid content achieved 49.5 g/L, 35.7 g/L and 72.2 %, respectively, using fed-batch culture of PL. The biodiesel parameters indicated lipids produced from HERs were suitable for biodiesel production. This study offers a cost-effective way to upgrade the HERs waste into micro-biodiesel.

Abstract
In this study, bacterial cellulose/gum Arabic composite (BC/GA) was synthesized by in-situ modification from lavender residue hydrolysate for the first time. The in-situ modification with GA adding showed great beneficial effect for BC/GA synthesis. Both the product (BC or BC/GA) yield and the product (BC or BC/GA) production per sugars consumption increased greatly by the in-situ modification when compared with the fermentation without GA adding (2.90 g/L vs. 0.91 g/L, and 0.461 g/g vs. 0.138 g/g). It is hypothesized that the combination of BC and GA is the main mechanism for the beneficial effect of the in-situ modification, and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images confirmed this hypothesis. GA adding showed little effect on the rheological properties of lavender residue hydrolysate, and this environment was suitable for the combination of BC and GA. The in-situ modification had an obvious influence on the crystallinity index and the thermal stability of BC/GA, but affected little on its functional groups and cellulose structural framework. Besides BC/GA synthesis and structure, the in-situ modification could also alter the texture properties of BC/GA. Overall, this study can offer some useful information for the biochemical conversion from green and cost-effective lavender residue hydrolysate to attractive biomaterial BC/GA.

Abstract
Composting is a sustainable strategy to deal with organic waste. Our research aimed to study the influence of an amendment of 10% matured compost (MC) during Chinese herb residue (CHR) compost. Here, a 60-day CHR compost was performed, and MC application was able to reduce the nitrogen loss and enhance the humic acid accumulation during the composting as compared with the non-inoculated control (NC), by 25 and 19%, respectively. Furthermore, the matured compost amendment improved the diversity of the bacterial community, increased the complexity of the co-occurrence network, and changed the keystone and module hub bacteria during composting. The increased abundance levels of Thermopolyspora, Thermobispora, and Thermosporomyces, which were significantly higher in MC than in NC, may contribute to the degradation of cellulose and the formation of humic acid. Overall, this study extends our understanding of the effects of matured compost reflux on compost quality and the bacterial community.

Succinic Production from Source-Separated Kitchen Biowaste in a Biorefinery Concept: Focusing on Alternative Carbon Dioxide Source for Fermentation Processes. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2023. Abstract
This study presents sustainable succinic acid production from the organic fraction of household kitchen wastes, i.e., the organic fraction of household kitchen waste (OFHKW), pretreated with enzymatic hydrolysis (100% cocktail dosage: 62.5% Cellic® CTec2, 31%% β-Glucanase and 6.5% Cellic ® HTec2, cellulase activity of 12.5 FPU/g-glucan). For fermentation, A. succinogenes was used, which consumes CO2 during the process. OFHKW at biomass loading > 20% (dry matter) resulted in a final concentration of fermentable sugars 81–85 g/L and can be treated as a promising feedstock for succinic production. Obtained results state that simultaneous addition of gaseous CO2 and MgCO3 (>20 g/dm3) resulted in the highest sugar conversion (79–81%) and succinic yields (74–75%). Additionally, CH4 content in biogas, used as a CO2 source, increased by 21–22% and reached 91–92% vol. Liquid fraction of source-separated kitchen biowaste and the residue after succinic fermentation were successfully converted into biogas. Results obtained in this study clearly document the possibility of integrated valuable compounds (succinic acid) and energy (biogas) production from the organic fraction of household kitchen wastes (OFHKW).

Abstract
Isatis indigotica Fort. root (Ban-lan-gen, IIR), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has an ancient and well-documented history for its medicinal properties. Aside from epigoitrin, indole alkaloids, and their corresponding derivatives as medicinal ingredients, it also contains lots of biomass such as starch. Herein, a new starch was isolated from IIR and the physicochemical properties such as amylose content, moisture content, ash content, morphology, thermal properties, and crystallography were characterized systematically. The amylose content of IIR starch was 19.84 ± 0.85%, and the size and shape of starch granules is ellipsoidal shape with sizes from 2 to 10 μm. IIR starch exhibited a C-type pattern and had 25.92% crystallinity (higher than that of corn starch). The gelatinization temperature of IIR starch was 58.68-75.41 °C, and its gelatinization enthalpy was ΔH gel = 4.33 J/g. After decocting, the IIR's residues can be used to prepare anhydro-sugars in a polar aprotic solvent. The total carbon yield of levoglucosan (LG), levoglucosenone (LGO), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and furfural (FF) could reach 69.81% from IIR's decoction residues in 1,4-dioxane with 15 mM H2SO4 as the catalyst. Further, the residues after dehydration were prepared into biochar by thermochemical conversion and the BET surface area of biochar was 1749.46 m2/g which has good application prospect in soil improvement and alleviates obstacles of IIR continuous cropping.

Abstract
Vine shoots and surplus grape must were assessed as feedstocks for succinic acid production with Actinobacillus succinogenes and Basfia succiniproducens. After acidic and enzymatic hydrolysis, vine shoots released 35-40 g/L total sugars. Both bacterial species produced 18-21 g/L succinic acid from this hydrolysate in 120 h. Regarding grape must fermentation, A. succinogenes clearly outperformed B. succiniproducens. Yeast extract (a source of organic nitrogen and vitamins) was the only additional nutrient needed by A. succinogenes to grow on grape must. Under mathematically optimized conditions (145.7 g/L initial sugars and 24.9 g/L yeast extract), A. succinogenes generated 88.9 ± 1.4 g/L succinic acid in 96 h, reaching a succinic acid yield of 0.66 ± 0.01 g/g and a sugar consumption of 96.64 ± 0.30%. Substrate inhibition was not observed in grape musts with 125-150 g/L initial sugars, provided that an adequate amount of yeast extract was available for bacteria. Alternative nitrogen sources to yeast extract (red wine lees, white wine lees, urea, NH4Cl, and choline chloride) were not suitable for A. succinogenes in grape must. KEY POINTS: • Vine shoots and surplus grape must were assessed for succinic acid bioproduction. • Succinic acid bioproduction was 21 g/L with vine shoots and 89 g/L with grape must. • Fermentation was efficient at high sugar loads if organic N supply was adequate.

Abstract
This work aimed to study the efficiency of polyvinyl-alcohol-immobilized Actinobacillus succinogenes ATCC55618 for succinic acid (SA) production. Batch fermentation (pH 7, 45% CO2 gas at 0.04 vvm) using glucose (40 g L-1) resulted in SA titer, 26.7 g L-1; productivity, 3.33 g L-1h-1; yield, 0.621 g g-1. Fed-batch mode with cyclic extrication of SA from the medium markedly enhanced the yield to 0.699 g g-1 and concentration to 59.5 g L-1. Batch fermentation using sugars derived from Chlorella vulgaris ESP-31 without yeast extract gave a SA productivity, concentration, and yield of 1.82 g L-1h-1, 36.1 g L-1, and 0.720 g g-1, respectively. Furthermore, continuous fermentation (at 6 h HRT) with microalgal sugar improved the productivity and yield to 3.53 g L-1h-1 and 0.62 g g-1, respectively, which is comparable to those obtained by using glucose. This study reports the highest productivity for SA fermentation using microalgae-derived sugars.

Abstract
Co-production of polysaccharides, ginsenosides and succinic acid was achieved from Panax ginseng residue (PGR) in this study. Physico-chemical separation was first applied to recover the released polysaccharides and ginsenoside. Enzymatic hydrolysis was then conducted to covert the left PGR into mono-sugars which was following transformed into succinic acid by constructing a succinic acid-producing strain of Escherichia coli-ZW333. Results indicated that the yields of polysaccharides and ginsenosides increased according to the increase of deconstruction content of PGR. A total sugar yield reached 52 g/L at 10% PGR loading and increased to 94.33 g/L following fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis. Finally, 56.28 g/L succinic acid was produced. In total, 18 g ginseng polysaccharides, 230 mg ginsenosides and 39 g succinic acid were produced from 100 g PGR. Accordingly, the total economic output could reach RMB 80,149 from 1 t PGR, illustrating the great value increasement of PGR by this industrially possible process.

Abstract
In this study, a white rot fungus Antrodia was newly isolated and named P5. Then its dye biodegradation ability was investigated. Our results showed that P5 could effectively degrade 1,000 mg/L Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) in 24 h with 95% decolorization under shaking conditions. It could tolerate a high dye concentration of 2,500 mg/L as well as 10% salt concentration and a wide range of pH values (4-9). Herbal extraction residues (HER) were screened as additional medium elements for P5 biodegradation. Following the addition of Fructus Gardeniae (FG) extraction residue, the biodegradation performance of P5 was significantly enhanced, achieving 92% decolorization in 12 h. Transcriptome analysis showed that the expression of multiple peroxidase genes was simultaneously increased: Lignin Peroxidase, Manganese Peroxidase, Laccase, and Dye Decolorization Peroxidase. The maximum increase in Lignin Peroxidase reached 10.22-fold in the presence of FG. The results of UV scanning and LC-HRMS showed that with the synergistic effect of FG, P5 could remarkably accelerate the biodegradation process of RB4 intermediates. Moreover, the fungal treatment with FG also promoted the abatement of RB4 toxicity. In sum, white rot fungus and herbal extraction residue were combined and used in the treatment of anthraquinone dye. This could be applied in practical contexts to realize an efficient and eco-friendly strategy for industrial dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the production of sugars from ginseng residues treated with laccase. Laccase was used to degrade lignin from ginseng residues in order to increase the yield of sugars. Reaction conditions, including solid loading, pH, enzyme concentration, incubation temperature, and incubation time, were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the optimum conditions were 20% of solid loading (w/v), pH 7, 300 IU/ml, temperature of 40 °C and incubation time of 6 h. The minimum residual lignin obtained was 59.89%. The results also showed that 56.58% sugars including 12.04% water soluble polysaccharides (WSP), 16.24% water insoluble polysaccharides (WIP) and 5.08% reducing sugar were afforded from delignify substance. Chemical characters of these sugars were analyzed. Pretreat of laccase delignification for sugars production is expected to be applied to other herbal residues.

Abstract
In view of the long medicinal use history of Periplaneta americana for manifold ulcer or skin wounds treatment, the comprehensive utilization value of P. americana herbal residue was evaluated. In this study, we isolated a polysaccharide fraction from P. americana herbal residue with the potential wound healing effect, named as PAP faction, based on our previous study and provided the structural and monosaccharide composition characterization. To improve the topical wound dressing property, a novel composite hydrogel consisting of PAP, carbomer 940 (CBM), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with different ratios were prepared and optimized. Mediated by the physical crosslinking effect among these polymers, the composite hydrogel exhibited good three-dimensional network structures, good swelling and water retention capacity, moderate mechanical property in rheological test. And then, the good cytocompatibility of hydrogel was corroborated by 3T3 fibroblast proliferation assay. Finally, the composite hydrogel loading PAP has been proved to accelerate wound healing in diabetic rat models, by promoting wound closure, collagen deposition, M2 macrophages polarization and angiogenesis. In summary, this study would provide an effective and promising wound dressing candidate for the prevention and treatment of diabetic wound, based on the ecological concept of the comprehensive utilization of natural herbal resources.

Abstract
Herbel-tolerant strains exhibit considerable environmental and commercial values not only due to their harmless treatment of herbal-extraction residues (HERs) but also because of their use in preparing high-quality cellulase cocktails. In this study, three typical HERs were evaluated for enzymatic in situ saccharification performance. A HERs-tolerance fungus, identified as Penicillium oxalicum G2, can grow in 1.5% (w/v) Radix isatidis residues (RIR), thereby exhibiting the highest FPase (2.2 U/mL), carboxymethyl cellulase (13.3 U/mL), and β-glucosidase (4.6 U/mL) activities. The most effective production of cellulase cocktail was achieved via orthogonal experiment in a system with pH 6.0, 30 °C, and 96 h. Cellulase cocktail from P. oxalicum G2 can directly saccharify the extraction RIR, thereby achieving a maximum reducing sugar yield of 7.2 mg/mL, which is 1.7-fold higher than those of commercial cellulases. Results illustrate the potential of P. oxalicum G2 for enzymatic in situ saccharification.

Abstract
Succinic acid, an important intermediate in the manufacture of plastics and other commodity and specialty chemicals, is currently made primarily from petroleum. We attempted to biosynthesize succinic acid through microbial fermentation of cellulosic sugars derived from the bagasse of sweet sorghum, a renewable feedstock that can grow in a wide range of climates around the world. We investigated pretreating sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB) with concentrated phosphoric acid at mild conditions (40-85°C) at various residence times and biomass concentrations. We then subjected the pretreated SSB to enzymatic hydrolysis with a commercial cellulase to release glucose. The highest glucose yield was obtained when SSB was pretreated at 50°C for 43 min at 130 g/L biomass concentration on dry basis. Fermentation was carried out with Actinobacillus succinogenes 130Z, which readily converted 29.2 g/L of cellulosic glucose to 17.8 g/L of succinic acid in a 3.5-L bioreactor sparged with CO2 at a rate of 0.5 vvm, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the process. Overall, we demonstrated, for the first time, the use of SSB for production of succinic acid using practices that lower energy use, future equipment cost, waste generation, and carbon footprint.
