Comparison of Fenton and bismuth ferrite Fenton-like pretreatments of sugarcane bagasse to enhance enzymatic saccharification

Higher efficiency of vanadate iron in heterogeneous Fenton-like systems to pretreat sugarcane bagasse and its enzymatic saccharification

Pretreatment is crucial for effective enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulose such as sugarcane bagasse (SCB). In the present study, SCB was pretreated with five kinds of heterogeneous Fenton-like systems (HFSs), respectively, in which α-FeOOH, α-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and FeS2 worked as four traditional heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts (HFCs), while FeVO4 worked as a novel HFC. The enzymatic reducing sugar conversion rate was then compared among SCB after different heterogeneous Fenton-like pretreatments (HFPs), and the optimal HFS and pretreatment conditions were determined. The mechanism underlying the difference in saccharification efficiency was elucidated by analyzing the composition and morphology of SCB. Moreover, the ion dissolution characteristics, variation of pH and Eh values, H2O2 and hydroxyl radical (·OH) concentration of FeVO4 and α-Fe2O3 HFSs were compared. The results revealed that the sugar conversion rate of SCB pretreated with FeVO4 HFS reached up to 58.25%, which was obviously higher than that under other HFPs. In addition, the surface morphology and composition of the pretreated SCB with FeVO4 HFS were more conducive to enzymatic saccharification. Compared with α-Fe2O3, FeVO4 could utilize H2O2 more efficiently, since the dissolved Fe3+ and V5+ can both react with H2O2 to produce more ·OH, resulting in a higher hemicellulose and lignin removal rate and a higher enzymatic sugar conversion rate. It can be concluded that FeVO4 HFP is a promising approach for lignocellulose pretreatment.

Tailoring the composition, antioxidant activity, and prebiotic potential of apple peel by Aspergillus oryzae fermentation

Apple peel is a typical lignocellulosic food by-product rich in functional components. In this work, apple peel was solid-state fermented with Aspergillus oryzae with an aim to modulate its composition and bioactivity. The results showed that A. oryzae fermentation substantially tailored the composition, improved the antioxidant activity and prebiotic potential of apple peel. Upon the fermentation, 1) free phenolics increased and antioxidant activity improved; 2) the pectin substances degraded significantly, along with a decrease in soluble dietary fiber while an increase in insoluble dietary fiber; 3) the in vitro fermentability increased as indicated by the increase in total acid production. The gut microbiota was shaped with more health-promoting potentials, such as higher abundances of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Megamonas and Prevotella-9 as well as lower abundances of Enterobacter and Echerichia-Shigella. This work is conducive to the modification of apple peel as a potential ingredient in food formulations.

Elucidating carbon conversion and bacterial succession by amending Fenon-like systems during co-composting of pig manure and branch

The essential point of current study was to investigate the effect of a Fenton-like system established by oxalic acid and Fe(II) on gas emission, organic matter decomposition and humification during composting. Branches were pretreated with Fenton reagents (0.02 M FeCl2·4H2O + 1.5 M H2O2) and then adding 10 % oxalic acid (OA). The treatments were marked as B1 (control), B2 (Fenton reagent), B3 (10% OA) and B4 (Fenton-like reagent). The results collected from 80 d of composting showed that adding Fenton-like reagent benefited the degradation of organic substances, as reflected by the total organic carbon and dissolved organic carbon, and the maximum decomposition rate was observed in B4. In addition, the Fenton-like reagent could improve the synthesis of humus characterized by complex and stable compounds, which was consistent with the spectral parameters (SUVA254, SUVA280, E253/E203 and Fourier transform-infrared indicators) of DOC. Furthermore, the functional microbial succession performance and linear discriminant effect size analyses provided microbial evidence of humification improvement. Notably, compared with the control, the minimum value of CH4 cumulation was reported in B4, which decreased by 30.44 %. Concluded together, the addition of a Fenton-like reagent composed by OA and Fe(II) is a practical way to improve the humification. Furthermore, the mechanisms related to the promotion of humification should be investigated from free radicals, functional genes, and metabolic pathways.

Unveiling the potential of novel recyclable deep eutectic solvent pretreatment: Effective separation of lignin from poplar hydrolyzed residue

To effectively convert the fermentable sugars present in lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels and additional value-added products, it is crucial to remove lignin from the biomass. With the intention of expeditiously remove lignin from poplar wood and improve cellulose saccharification, an innovative ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) benzyl triethyl ammonium chloride-ethylene glycol-FeCl3 (T-EG-F) was studied for the pretreatment of poplar hydrolyzed residue (PHR). The results revealed that following T-EG-F DES pretreatment at 130 °C for 4 h, the lignin removal rate reached 91.88 %. The effect of DES on PHR and regenerated lignin was comprehensively investigated using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric (TG) and other characterization methods, providing valuable insights into the mechanism of this innovative biomass pretreatment. Moreover, there was a significant improvement in the enzyme digestibility of the DES pretreatment residue. At 48 h, the enzyme load of 30 FPU/g cellulose achieved a remarkable enzyme digestibility of 97.31 %, and this value exhibited a notable increase of 6.56 times compared to the untreated poplar sample. In addition, the T-EG-F could be recycled and reused. This study demonstrates that the potential of T-EG-F DES pretreatment as a green and efficient method for lignin dissociation from lignocellulosic biomass, offering a promising approach for biomass component separation.

Efficiency and mechanism in preparation and heavy metal cation/anion adsorption of amphoteric adsorbents modified from various plant straws

Cellulose can be modified for the loading of functional groups such as amino groups, sulfydryl groups, and carboxyl groups. Cellulose-modified adsorbents generally have specific adsorption capacities for either heavy metal anions or cations, and possess the advantages of wide raw material source, high modification efficiency, high adsorbent recyclability, and great convenience in recovery of the adsorbed heavy metals. At present, preparation of amphoteric heavy metal adsorbents from lignocellulose has attracted great attention. However, the difference in efficiency of preparing heavy metal adsorbents by modification of various plant straw materials and mechanism for the difference remain to be further explored. In this study, three plant straws, including Eichhornia crassipes (EC), sugarcane bagasse (SB) and metasequoia sawdust (MS), were sequentially modified by tetraethylene-pentamine (TEPA) and biscarboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (BCTTC) to obtain amphoteric cellulosic adsorbents (EC-TB, SB-TB and MS-TB, respectively), which can simultaneously adsorb heavy metal cations or anions. The heavy metal adsorption properties and mechanism before and after modification were compared. Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal rates by the three adsorbents were 2.2-4.3 folds and 3.0-13.0 folds of those before modification, respectively, following the order of MS-TB > EC-TB > SB-TB. In the five-cycle adsorption-regeneration test, the Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal rate by MS-TB decreased by 58.1 % and 21.5 %, respectively. Among the three plant straws, MS possessed the most abundant hydroxyl groups and the largest specific surface area (SSA), and accordingly MS-TB had the highest load of adsorption functional groups [(C)NH, (S)CS and (HO)CO] and also the largest SSA among the three adsorbents, which contribute to its highest modification and adsorption efficiency. This study is of great significance for screening suitable raw plant materials to prepare amphoteric heavy metal adsorbents with superior adsorption performance.

Elaborating the role of rhamnolipids on the formation of humic substances during rice straw composting based on Fenton pretreatment and fungal inoculation

Composting is a green and sustainable way to dispose and reuse agricultural wastes, but the low degradation rate during composting hinders its application. This study was conducted to explore the effect of added surfactant rhamnolipids after Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of fungi (Aspergillus fumigatus) into the compost on the formation of humic substances (HS) during rice straw composting, and explored the effect of this method. The results showed that rhamnolipids speeded up the degradation of organic matter and HS formation during composting. Rhamnolipids promoted the generation of lignocellulose-degrading products after Fenton pretreatment and fungal inoculation. The differential products benzoic acid, ferulic acid, 2, 4-Di-tert-butylphenol and syringic acid were obtained. Additionally, key fungal species and modules were identified using multivariate statistical analysis. Reducing sugars, pH, and total nitrogen were the key environmental factors that affected HS formation. This study provides a theoretical basis for the high-quality transformation of agricultural wastes.

Effect of calcium peroxide assisted microwave irradiation pretreatment on humus formation and microbial community in straw and dairy manure composting

In this study, the effects of four pretreatment methods on the crystallinity of maize straw were compared, and the CaO₂ assisted microwave pretreatment was selected for straw and dairy manure composting. The humification and microbial community were investigated. Results showed that the pretreatment increased the initial water-soluble carbon, which favored the microbial activity, and the CO₂ release increased by 15.71%. Pretreatment promoted the lignocellulose degradation, with total degradation ratio of 37.06%. The final humic acid content was 11.39 g/kg higher than the control. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that polyphenols and amino acids were significantly related to humus formation. In addition, pretreatment rendered the Firmicutes the most dominant phylum, and increased the metabolic intensity of reducing sugar metabolism, aromatic amino acid biosynthesis and carbon fixation pathways. Redundancy analysis revealed that the dominant genus of Firmicutes was significantly positively correlated with humus, while that of Actinobacteriota was correlated with CO₂ release.

Nature-inspired pretreatment of lignocellulose - Perspective and development

As sustainability gains increasing importance in addition to cost-effectiveness as a criterion for evaluating engineering systems and practices, biological processes for lignocellulose pretreatment have attracted growing attention. Biological systems such as white and brown rot fungi and wood-consuming insects offer fascinating examples of processes and systems built by nature to effectively deconstruct plant cell walls under environmentally benign and energy-conservative environments. Research in the last decade has resulted in new knowledge that advanced the understanding of these systems, provided additional insights into these systems' functional mechanisms, and demonstrated various applications of these processes. The new knowledge and insights enable the adoption of a nature-inspired strategy aiming at developing technologies that are informed by the biological systems but superior to them by overcoming the inherent weakness of the natural systems. This review discusses the nature-inspired perspective and summarizes related advancements, including the evolution from biological systems to nature-inspired processes, the features of biological pretreatment mechanisms, the development of nature-inspired pretreatment processes, and future perspective. This work aims to highlight a different strategy in the research and development of novel lignocellulose pretreatment processes and offer some food for thought.

Oxidative pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for enzymatic hydrolysis: Progress and challenges

Deconstruction of cell wall structure is important for biorefining of lignocellulose to produce various biofuels and chemicals. Oxidative delignification is an effective way to increase the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose. In this work, the current research progress on conventional oxidative pretreatment including wet oxidation, alkaline hydrogen peroxide, organic peracids, Fenton oxidation, and ozone oxidation were reviewed. Some recently developed novel technologies for coupling pretreatment and direct biomass-to-electricity conversion with recyclable oxidants were also introduced. The primary mechanism of oxidative pretreatment to enhance cellulose digestibility is delignification, especially in alkaline medium, thus eliminating the physical blocking and non-productive adsorption of enzymes by lignin. However, the cost of oxidative delignification as a pretreatment is still too expensive to be applied at large scale at present. Efforts should be made particularly to reduce the cost of oxidants, or explore valuable products to obtain more revenue.

Effect of Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation on cellulose-degrading genes and fungal communities during rice straw composting

The aims of this article were to study the effect of Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation on cellulose-degrading genes and fungal communities during rice straw composting. The rice straw was pretreated by Fenton reactions and functional bacterial agents were then inoculated during the cooling phase of composting. Three treatment groups were carried out, the control (CK), Fenton pretreatment (FeW) and Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation (FeWI). The results indicated that Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation changed the fungal communities composition and increased fungal diversity, leading to changes in the cellulose-degrading genes. In addition, a network analysis showed that in the FeWI treatment, the fungi from modules 1, 5 and 8 were core hosts of the cellulose-degrading genes driving the cellulosic degradation. Moreover, Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation changed the core module fungal communities and strengthened the correlation between the core fungi and the cellulose-degrading genes, thereby promoting cellulosic degradation. Based on redundancy and structural equation model analyses, the NH₄⁺-N, TOC, pH and Shannon index were important factors influencing the variations in the cellulose-degrading genes. This study provides a foundation for cellulosic degradation during cellulosic waste composting.

Lignocellulose biomass bioconversion during composting: Mechanism of action of lignocellulase, pretreatment methods and future perspectives

Composting is a biodegradation and transformation process that converts lignocellulosic biomass into value-added products, such as humic substances (HSs). However, the recalcitrant nature of lignocellulose hinders the utilization of cellulose and hemicellulose, decreasing the bioconversion efficiency of lignocellulose. Pretreatment is an essential step to disrupt the structure of lignocellulosic biomass. Many pretreatment methods for composting may cause microbial inactivation and death. Thus, the pretreatment methods suitable for composting can promote the degradation and transformation of lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, this review summarizes the pretreatment methods suitable for composting. Microbial consortium pretreatment, Fenton pretreatment and surfactant-assisted pretreatment for composting may improve the bioconversion process. Microbial consortium pretreatment is a cost-effective pretreatment method to enhance HSs yields during composting. On the other hand, the efficiency of enzyme production during composting is very important for the degradation of lignocellulose, whose action mechanism is unknown. Therefore, this review describes the mechanism of action of lignocellulase, the predominant microbes producing lignocellulase and their related genes. Finally, optimizing pretreatment conditions and increasing enzymatic hydrolysis to improve the quality of composts by controlling suitable microenvironmental factors and core target microbial activities as a research focus in the bioconversion of lignocellulose during composting in the future.

Identifying driving factors of humic acid formation during rice straw composting based on Fenton pretreatment with bacterial inoculation

The aims of this study were to identify the driving factors of humic acid (HA) during rice straw composting based on Fenton pretreatment with bacterial inoculation. Rice straw was pretreated by Fenton reactions and then inoculated during composting, which was set up CK (control), FeW (Fenton pretreatment) and FeWI (Fenton pretreatment + functional bacterial agents). Results indicated that Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of functional bacteria increased the concentration of HA components, which was due to that bacterial composition was changed and bacterial diversity was decreased. Moreover, Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of functional bacteria increased the bacterial amounts of shikimic acid metabolism genes and the correlation between HA components and shikimic acid metabolism genes. Therefore, the functional bacteria were core driving factors, and NH₄^--N, pH, cellulose and bacterial diversity as key environmental factors to promote the formation of HA components.

Anti-inflammatory drugs degradation during LED-UV365 photolysis of free chlorine: roles of reactive oxidative species and formation of disinfection by-products

Light-emitting diode (LED) is environmentally friendly with longer life compared with traditionally mercury lamps. This study investigated the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)- phenacetin (PNT) and acetaminophen (ACT)- removal during LED-UV (365 nm) photolysis of free available chlorine (FAC). Degradation of PNT and ACT during LED-UV₃₆₅/FAC treatment at pH 5.5-8.5 followed the pseudo-first order kinetics. The presence of hydroxyl radicals (·OH), reactive chlorine species (RCS), and ozone (O₃, transformed from O (³P)) were screened by using scavengers of ethanol (EtOH), tert-Butanol (TBA), and 3-buten-2ol, and 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMP), and quantified by competition kinetics with probing compounds of nitrobenzene (NB), benzoate acid (BA), 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DMOB). Higher pH would lead to decrease of ·OH contribution and an increase of FAC contribution to PNT and ACT degradation. It has been determined that the contribution of O₃ to degradation of PNT and ACT was less than 5% for all pHs, and O³(P) reacts toward EtOH with second-order constant of 1.52 × 10⁹ M^-1s^-1. LED-UV₃₆₅/FAC system reduced the formation of five typical CX₃-R type disinfection by-products (DBPs) as well as the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of water samples at pH 5.5 and 8.5, compared with FAC alone. The decrease of DBPs formation resulted from fast FAC decomposition upon LED-UV₃₆₅ irradiation. A feasible reaction pathway of DBPs formation in the LED-UV₃₆₅/FAC system was examined with density functional theory (DFT). For FAC decay during LED-UV₃₆₅/FAC with effluent from wastewater, the residual FAC in 15 min was 0.8 mg/L (lower than limit of 0.2 mg/L) once initial FAC was 2.0 mg/L. The results indicate that more tests on the balance of target pollutant removal efficiency, residual FAC and cost should be explored in LED-UV₃₆₅/FAC system for application.

A Critical Review of Recent Progress and Perspective in Practical Denitration Application

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) represent one of the main sources of haze and pollution of the atmosphere as well as the causes of photochemical smog and acid rain. Furthermore, it poses a serious threat to human health. With the increasing emission of NOx, it is urgent to control NOx. According to the different mechanisms of NOx removal methods, this paper elaborated on the adsorption method represented by activated carbon adsorption, analyzed the oxidation method represented by Fenton oxidation, discussed the reduction method represented by selective catalytic reduction, and summarized the plasma method represented by plasma-modified catalyst to remove NOx. At the same time, the current research status and existing problems of different NOx removal technologies were revealed and the future development prospects were forecasted.
