Abstract
Metal doping plays a key role in overcoming inefficient extracellular electron transfer between electrode interface and electricity-producing microorganisms. However, it is unknown whether different metals play distinctive roles in the doping process. Herein, three different metal ions (Fe, Ni and Cu) are added to the spinning precursor to obtain the corresponding electrospinning metal doped carbon nanofibers. It is found that the maximum output power of iron doped carbon nanofiber anode is 641.96 mW m-2, which is better than that of nickel doped carbon nanofiber (411.26 mW m-2) and copper doped carbon nanofiber (336.01 mW m-2), as well as 7.62 times higher than that of CNF. The results proved that due to the various number and types of active sites formed, as well as the distinction in surface morphology and structure, the electronegativity of each material is different. The different bio-abiotic interface could affect the direct contact between the anode interface and the extracellular protein of electricity producing microorganisms, which leading to a significant gap in the improvement of bioelectrocatalytic performance of different metal anode materials. This work provides a synthetic idea for designing highly efficient anode materials with directional metal modification and interface regulation.

Abstract
This study reports the synthesis of a nanocomposite consisting of spongin and its applicability in the development of an aptasensing platform with high performance. The spongin was carefully extracted from a marine sponge and decorated with copper tungsten oxide hydroxide. The resulting spongin-copper tungsten oxide hydroxide was functionalized by silver nanoparticles and utilized in electrochemical aptasensor fabrication. The nanocomposite covered on a glassy carbon electrode surface amplified the electron transfer and increased active electrochemical sites. The aptasensor was fabricated by loading of thiolated aptamer on the embedded surface via thiol-AgNPs linkage. The applicability of the aptasensor was tested in detecting the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium as one of the five most common causes of nosocomial infectious diseases. The aptasensor measured S. aureus under a linear concentration range of 10-108 colony-forming units per milliliter and a limit of quantification and detection of 12 and 1 colony-forming unit per milliliter, respectively. The highly selective diagnosis of S. aureus in the presence of some common bacterial strains was satisfactorily evaluated. The acceptable results of the human serum analysis as the real sample may be promising in the bacteria tracking in clinical samples underlying the green chemistry principle.

Abstract
Carbazole and its derivatives are polycyclic aromatic heterocycles with unusual toxicity and mutagenicity. However, disposal of these polycyclic aromatic heterocycles remains a significant challenge. This study focused on efficient resource recovery from carbazole using an obligate aerobe, Sphingobium yanoikuyae XLDN2-5, in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 successfully achieved carbazole degradation and simultaneously electricity generation in MFCs with a maximum power density of 496.8 mW m-2 and carbazole degradation rate of 100%. It is the first time that S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 was discovered as an electrochemically active bacterium with high extracellular electron transfer (EET) capability. Redox mediator analysis indicated that no self-produced redox mediators were found for S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 under analysis conditions, and the exogenous redox mediators used in this study did not promote its EET. The nanowires produced by S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 cells were found in the biofilm by morphology characterization and the growth process of the nanowires was consistent with the discharge process of the MFC. Conductivity determination further verified that the nanowires produced by S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 cells were electrically conductive. Based on these results, it is speculated that S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 may mainly utilize conductive nanowires produced by itself rather than redox mediators to meet the requirements of normal energy metabolism when it grows in the low dissolved oxygen zone of the anodic biofilm. These novel findings on the EET mechanism of S. yanoikuyae XLDN2-5 lay a foundation for further exploration of polycyclic aromatic heterocyclic pollutants treatment in electrochemical devices, which may create new biotechnology processes for these pollutants control.

Abstract
Owing to the low price, chemical stability and good conductivity, carbon-based materials have been extensively applied as the anode in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this review, apart from the charge storage mechanism and anode requirements, the major work focuses on five categories of carbon-based anode materials (traditional carbon, porous carbon, nano-carbon, metal/carbon composite and polymer/carbon composite). The relationship is demonstrated in depth between the physicochemical properties of the anode surface/interface/bulk (porosity, surface area, hydrophilicity, partical size, charge, roughness, etc.) and the bioelectrochemical performances (electron transfer, electrolyte diffusion, capacitance, toxicity, start-up time, current, power density, voltage, etc.). An outlook for future work is also proposed.

Abstract
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging method for extracting energy from wastewater. The power generated from such systems is low due to the sluggish electron transfer from the inside of the biocatalyst to the anode surface. One strategy for enhancing the electron transfer rate is anode modification. In this study, iron nanostructure was synthesized on a carbon cloth (CC) via a simple electroplating technique, and later investigated as a bio-anode in an MFC operated with real wastewater. The performance of an MFC with a nano-layer of iron was compared to that using bare CC. The results demonstrated that the open-circuit voltage increased from 600 mV in the case of bare CC to 800 mV in the case of the iron modified CC, showing a 33% increase in OCV. This increase in OCV can be credited to the decrease in the anode potential from 0.16 V vs. Ag/AgCl in the case of bare CC, to −0.01 V vs. Ag/AgCl in the case of the modified CC. The power output in the case of the modified electrode was 80 mW/m2—two times that of the MFC using the bare CC. Furthermore, the steady-state current in the case of the iron modified carbon cloth was two times that of the bare CC electrode. The improved performance was correlated to the enhanced electron transfer between the microorganisms and the iron-plated surface, along with the increase of the anode surface- as confirmed from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the surface morphology, respectively.

Abstract
A novel three-dimensional nickel hydroxide/polyurethane (Ni(OH)2/PU) electrode was prepared by a simple and environmentally friendly method and used for non-enzymatic detection of glucose. The Ni(OH)2/PU electrode was obtained by one-pot hydrothermal method of loading nickel hydroxide on a cheap, easily available and flexible polyurethane sponge, which is facile and energy-saving. The porous structure of the polyurethane sponge provides a large surface area and a rich electrochemical active site for the electrode, which is beneficial to the oxidation reaction of glucose on the surface of the electrode with Ni(OH)2. The Ni(OH)2/PU electrode structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The cyclic voltammetry test was used to study the catalytic performance of Ni(OH)2/PU electrode for oxidation of glucose and the chronoamperometry was used to investigate the detection performance of Ni(OH)2/PU electrode on glucose. The results indicate that this non-enzymatic glucose sensor had a high sensitivity of 2845 μA mM-1 cm-2, a low detection limit of 0.32 μM (S/N = 3), a detection range of 0.01-2.06 mM and response time of less than 5 s. In addition, the Ni(OH)2/PU electrode had excellent selectivity, reproducibility and stability and also exhibited effective detection of glucose in fetal bovine serum (FBS). In summary, Ni(OH)2/PU electrode had broad prospects as an excellent candidate for non-enzymatic glucose sensors. The study also opens up a facile and energy-saving approach for preparing three-dimensional (3D) functionalized polymer electrode via hydrothermal method as electrochemical sensors.

Abstract
Microbial anodes are the cornerstone of most electro-microbial processes. Designing 3-dimensional porous electrodes to increase the surface area of the electroactive biofilm they support is a key challenge in order to boost their performance. In this context, the critical review presented here aims to assess whether an optimal range of pore size may exist for the design of microbial anodes. Pore sizes of a few micrometres can enable microbial cells to penetrate but in conditions that do not favour efficient development of electroactive biofilms. Pores of a few tens of micrometres are subject to clogging. Sizes of a few hundreds of micrometres allow penetration of the biofilm inside the structure, but its development is limited by internal acidification. Consequently, pore sizes of a millimetre or so appear to be the most suitable. In addition, a simple theoretical approach is described to establish basis for porous microbial anode design.

Abstract
To explore a sustainable and efficient treatment approach for organic acid fermentation wastewater, two microbial fuel cells (MFCs) systems inoculated with wastewater or domesticated microbial community were constructed in this study. Compared with the MFC inoculated with domesticated microbial community, the MFC inoculated with wastewater not only showed higher power density (543.75 mW m-2) and coulomb efficiency (22.10%), but also exhibited higher removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (75.59%), total nitrogen (76.15%), and ammonia nitrogen (83.23%), meeting the demand of wastewater discharge standard of China. Sequencing analysis revealed that the MFC inoculated with wastewater were richer in microbial community, and some bacteria such as Saprospiraceae and Caldilineaceae were beneficial for its good performance. In contrast, the microbial community of the MFC inoculated with domesticated microbial community was relatively simple. These results indicated that MFCs may be a sustainable method for organic acid fermentation wastewater treatment without any preprocessing.

Abstract
Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are groups of bioelectrochemical technologies and platforms that could facilitate versatile environmental and biological applications. The performance of BES is mainly determined by the key process of electron transfer at the bacteria and electrode interface, which is known as extracellular electron transfer (EET). Thus, developing novel electrodes to encourage bacteria attachment and enhance EET efficiency is of great significance. Recently, three-dimensional (3D) electrodes, which provide large specific area for bacteria attachment and macroporous structures for substrate diffusion, have emerged as a promising electrode for high-performance BES. Herein, a comprehensive review of versatile methodology developed for 3D electrode fabrication is presented. This review article is organized based on the categorization of 3D electrode fabrication strategy and BES performance comparison. In particular, the advantages and shortcomings of these 3D electrodes are presented and their future development is discussed.
