Building electrode with three-dimensional macroporous interface from biocompatible polypyrrole and conductive graphene nanosheets to achieve highly efficient microbial electrocatalysis

Mixed Conducting Polymers Alter Electron Transfer Thermodynamics to Boost Current Generation from Electroactive Microbes

Electroactive microbes that can release or take up electrons are essential components of nearly every ecological niche and are powerful tools for the development of alternative energy technologies. Small-molecule mediators are critical for this electron transfer but remain difficult to study and engineer because they perform concerted two-electron transfer in native systems but only individual, one-electron transfers in electrochemical studies. Here, we report that electrode modification with ion- and electron-conductive polymers yields biosimilar, concerted two-electron transfer from Shewanella oneidensis via flavin mediators. S. oneidensis biofilms on these polymers show significantly improved per-microbe current generation and morphologies that more closely resemble native systems, setting a new paradigm for the study and optimization of these electron transfer processes. The unprecedented concerted electron transfer was found to be due to altered mediator electron transfer thermodynamics, enabling biologically relevant studies of electroactive biofilms in the lab for the first time. These important findings pave the way for a complete understanding of the ecological role of electroactive microbes and their broad application in sustainable technologies.

Newly graphene/polypyrrole (rGO/PPy) modified carbon felt as bio-cathode in bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) achieving complete denitrification

Nitrate reduction in bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) has attracted wide attention due to its low sludge yields and cost-efficiency advantages. However, the high resistance of traditional electrodes is considered to limit the denitrification performance of BESs. Herein, a new graphene/polypyrrole (rGO/PPy) modified electrode is fabricated via one-step electrodeposition and used as cathode in BES for improving nitrate removal from wastewater. The formation and morphological results support the successful formation of rGO/PPy nanohybrids and confirm the part covalent bonding of Py into GO honeycomb lattices to form a three-dimensional cross-linked spatial structure. The electrochemical tests indicate that the rGO/PPy electrode outperforms the unmodified electrode due to the 3.9-fold increase in electrochemical active surface area and 6.9-fold decrease in the charge transfer resistance (Rct). Batch denitrification activity tests demonstrate that the BES equipped with modified rGO/PPy biocathode could not only achieve the full denitrification efficiency of 100% with energy recovery (15.9 × 10-2 ± 0.14 A/m2), but also favor microbial attach and growth with improved biocompatible surface. This work provides a feasible electrochemical route to fabricate and design a high-performance bioelectrode to enhance denitrification in BESs.

Advanced electrolysis sulfur-based biofiltration for simultaneous total nitrogen removal and estrogen toxicity reduction from low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio wastewater

A sulfur-based biofilter enhanced by phosphate modified activated carbon as particle electrodes was constructed to simultaneously remove total nitrogen (TN) and estrogen from low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) wastewater containing 1 mg/L 17-alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2). Results showed that the enhanced biofilter achieved outstanding performance in EE2 removal (93.2 %) and TN reduction (effluent < 5 mg/L), demonstrating robustness against C/N fluctuations. It was noteworthy that it successfully reduced both acute toxicity (59.5 %) and estrogenic activity (88.6 %). Comprehensive characterization investigations and microbial community structure analysis revealed that enhanced electron transfer and increased microbial abundance likely contributed to improved biofilter performance. Core microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas and Chryseobacterium were identified as key contributors to synergistic estrogen degradation and denitrification. This study presented a feasible and promising strategy of combined process with three-dimensional electrodes and sulfur-based biofilter, highlighting substantial potential for advanced purification and safe reuse of wastewater.

Functional Nanomaterial-Modified Anodes in Microbial Fuel Cells: Advances and Perspectives

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising approach that could utilize microorganisms to oxidize biodegradable pollutants in wastewater and generate electrical power simultaneously. Introducing advanced anode nanomaterials is generally considered as an effective way to enhance MFC performance by increasing bacterial adhesion and facilitating extracellular electron transfer (EET). This review focuses on the key advances of recent anode modification materials, as well as the current understanding of the microbial EET process occurring at the bacteria-electrode interface. Based on the difference in combination mode of the exoelectrogens and nanomaterials, anode surface modification, hybrid biofilm construction and single-bacterial surface modification strategies are elucidated exhaustively. The inherent mechanisms may help to break through the performance output bottleneck of MFCs by rational design of EET-related nanomaterials, and lead to the widespread application of microbial electrochemical systems.

Construction of a new type of three-dimensional honeycomb-structure anode in microbial electrochemical systems for energy harvesting and pollutant removal

Electrode materials occupy most of the construction cost of the microbial electrochemical system (MES), and the low mechanical strength and poor electrochemical performance of the commonly used traditional carbon-based materials restrict the promotion and application of this technology. In this study, polymer-based three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb-structure (HS) materials with good mechanical properties were used as supporting materials. Graphene (GR), carbon nanotube (CNT), and polypyrrole (PPy) was separately chosen as a surface conductivity coating layer for preparing MES anodes. The introduction of GR, CNT, and PPy on HS increased surface roughness, hydrophilicity, O and N content, electrochemically active surface area, and decreased charge transfer internal resistance, which promoted the adhesion of microorganisms on their surface and enhanced the extracellular electron transfer process at the electrode/microbe interface. The CNT-HS anode system got the better maximal power density (1700.7 ± 149.0 mW/m²) of the three modified anode systems and 3.60 times that of MES using CC (471.8 ± 27.2 mW/m²) as the anode. The accelerated reactions of the redox species in the outer cell membrane, the promoted electron shuttle secretion, and the enhanced abundance of the tricarboxylic acid cycle-related functional genes in biofilm led to better performance of the CNT-HS anode system. The CNT-HS anode system also exhibited long-term operational stability (>6 months) and a good chemical oxygen demand degradation effect. Furthermore, CNT-HS material exhibited its cost advantage, and its projected cost is estimated to be about $1.8/m², much lower than the currently used MES anodes ($8.2-548.2/m²). Considering the good mechanical properties, simple preparation process, low manufacturing cost, long-term stability, excellent bio-electrochemical performance, and good pollutant removal ability, HS-based anode has promising potential for high-performance MES in applications.

Opportunities for visual techniques to determine characteristics and limitations of electro-active biofilms

Optimization of bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) relies on a better understanding of electro-active biofilms (EABfs). These microbial communities are studied with a range of techniques, including electrochemical, visual and chemical techniques. Even though each of these techniques provides very valuable and wide-ranging information about EABfs, such as performance, morphology and biofilm composition, they are often destructive. Therefore, the information obtained from EABfs development and characterization studies are limited to a single characterization of EABfs and often limited to one time point that determines the end of the experiment. Despite being scarcer and not as commonly reported as destructive techniques, non-destructive visual techniques can be used to supplement EABfs characterization by adding in-situ information of EABfs functioning and its development throughout time. This opens the door to EABfs monitoring studies that can complement the information obtained with destructive techniques. In this review, we provide an overview of visual techniques and discuss the opportunities for combination with the established electrochemical techniques to study EABfs. By providing an overview of suitable visual techniques and discussing practical examples of combination of visual with electrochemical methods, this review aims at serving as a source of inspiration for future studies in the field of BESs.

Advances in interfacial engineering for enhanced microbial extracellular electron transfer

The extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency between electroactive microbes (EAMs) and electrode is a key factor determining the development of microbial electrochemical technology (MET). Currently, the low EET efficiency of EAMs limits the application of MET in the fields of organic matter degradation, electric energy production, seawater desalination, bioremediation and biosensing. Enhancement of the interaction between EAMs and electrode by interfacial engineering methods brings bright prospects for the improvement of the EET efficiency of EAMs. In view of the research in recent years, this mini-review systematically summarizes various interfacial engineering strategies ranging from electrode surface modification to hybrid biofilm formation, then to single cell interfacial engineering and intracellular reformation for promoting the electron transfer between EAMs and electrode, focusing on the applicability and limitations of these methodologies. Finally, the possible key directions, challenges and opportunities for future interfacial engineering to strengthen the microbial EET are proposed in this mini-review.

Biosynthetic FeS/BC hybrid particles enhanced the electroactive bacteria enrichment in microbial electrochemical systems

Modifying the surface of an anode can improve electroactive bacteria (EAB) enrichment, thereby enhancing the performance of the associated microbial electrochemical systems (MESs). In this study, biosynthetic FeS nanoparticles were used to modify the anode in MESs. The experimental results demonstrated that the stable maximum voltage of the FeS composited biochar (FeS/BC)-modified anode reached 0.72 V, which is 20% higher than that of the control. The maximum power density with the FeS/BC anode was 793 mW/m², which is 46.31% higher than that obtained with the control (542 mW/m²). According to cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis, FeS/BC facilitates the direct electron transfer between bacteria and the electrode. The biomass protein concentration of the FeS/BC anode was 841.75 μg/cm², which is almost 1.5 times higher than that of the carbon cloth anode (344.25 μg/cm²); hence, FeS/BC modification can promote biofilm formation. The composition of Geobacter species on the FeS/BC anode (75.16%) was much higher than that on the carbon cloth anode (4.81%). All the results demonstrated that the use of the biosynthetic FeS/BC anode is an environmentally friendly and efficient strategy for enhancing the electroactive biofilm formation and EAB enrichment in MESs.

Enhancing nitrate removal from wastewater by integrating heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification coupled manganese oxidation process (IHAD-MnO): Internal carbon utilization performance

Due to cause the deterioration of water quality and can produce toxic nitrite, the nitrate constituted of great threatens to human health and eco-systematic safety. Among most well-known biotechnology to remove nitrate, the integrated heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification (IHAD) process is promising, especially for the organic-limited polluted water. In this work, the IHAD coupled manganese oxidation (IHAD-MnO) process was developed by using Pseudomonas sp. SZF15 (Gram negative strain, and rod-shaped morphology with 2.3 μm in length) in the glass serum bottles. It was found that limited organic content could accelerate nitrate removal rate, and manganese oxidation efficiency can reach up to 60.08%. To further explain carbon conversion characteristics of the process, pure heterotrophic condition assays were conducted, the results confirmed that inorganic carbon will be generated by organic carbon metabolism in heterotrophic condition, the maximum accumulation content of inorganic carbon was 142.21 mg/L (when the initial organic carbon level was 293 mg-C/L). Subsequently, since the consumption of organic carbon, biogenic inorganic carbon can be further utilized by microorganisms to support autotrophic denitrification (AuDN). Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to analyze precipitation products produced from the process. The magnified Mn 2p spectra results showed that a typical characteristic peak of manganese dioxide was observed with the intense peak at 641.8 eV and a satellite peak at 653.7 eV, respectively. This showed that Mn(II) was oxidized to manganese dioxide by the process, which may be a functional material with adsorption properties. The process posed a highly efficient and cost effective solution with less carbon consumption and less greenhouse gas emission for sustainable water treatment technologies.

Enhanced performance and degradation of wastewater in microbial fuel cells using titanium dioxide nanowire photocathodes

This paper explores the decolorization of dye wastewaters and electricity generation using dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with titanium dioxide nanowire (TiO2 NW) photocathodes. TiO2 NW cathodes under ultraviolet light are observed to enhance the reduction of azo dye Active Red 30 (AR 30) and electricity generation. The analysis of electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) indicates acceleration of the electron transfer processes of photoelectrode reduction by the photocatalysis of TiO2 NWs, with polarization resistance of the photocathode being 10.45 Ω under light irradiation from 294 Ω in the dark. Ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy shows that the maximum degradation of the MFCs is 78.1%; the azo bond of AR 30 may be cleaved by photoelectrons generated by light irradiation of the illuminated TiO2 NW photocathode. The electricity produced by microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is expected to enhance the reductive decolorization of the azo dye AR 30 solution.

Rationally designed conjugated microporous polymers for contaminants adsorption

Adsorption technology has been widely developed and employed for water and air pollution control. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) emerge as the appropriate adsorbents candidate. To fulfill high capacity and good selectivity for the adsorption, strategies of flexible micropores design and functional group modification that facilitate the physical and chemical effect are considered desirable. The review firstly summarizes the advancements in structural studies of CMPs and the applications for contaminants adsorption from water and air. Further, the mechanisms involved in the remarkable capacity and selectivity of CMPs adsorbents are addressed. Finally, upcoming research efforts on materials design, adsorption principle, and resource recovery to overcome current practical bottlenecks are proposed.

Bacteria-affinity aminated carbon nanotubes bridging reduced graphene oxide for highly efficient microbial electrocatalysis

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) exhibit great potential for simultaneous wastewater treatment and energy recovery. However, the efficiency of microbial electrocatalysis is fundamentally limited by the high resistance and poor biocompatibility of electrode materials. Herein, we construct a novel "binder-free" 3D biocompatible bioelectrode consists of 1D aminated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-NH₂) and 2D conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets through one-step electrodeposition. As expected, the maximum current density reached to 3.25 ± 0.03 mA cm^-2 with the rGO@CNTs-NH₂ electrode, which is 4.33-fold higher than that of a bare rGO (0.75 ± 0.01 mA cm^-2), and is among the best performance reported for three-dimensional electrodes. The high microbial electrocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the excellent performance of electron transfer and bacterial colonization, which originates from the 3D interconnecting scaffold, fast 1D CNTs "e-bridge" and positively charged surface.

Ice-interface assisted large-scale preparation of polypyrrole/graphene oxide films for all-solid-state supercapacitors

In this paper, large-scale, self-standing polypyrrole/graphene oxide (PPy/GO) nanocomposite films were prepared by an environmentally friendly and easy-to-operate confined polymerization method, and were also assembled as electrode materials for symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this paper, large-scale, self-standing polypyrrole/graphene oxide (PPy/GO) nanocomposite films were prepared by an environmentally friendly and easy-to-operate confined polymerization method, and were also assembled as electrode materials for symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitors. The morphology, chemical structure and electrochemical property were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. The lamellar structure of GO and both strong interaction with ice and pyrrole could promote polymerization of pyrrole and improve the compactness of the film. With the aid of GO, the conjugation length of PPy increased, the resistance of the material decreased, and the electrochemical energy storage of the composite film was significantly enhanced. In the case of 2.5 wt% GO, the prepared PPy/GO nanocomposite supercapacitor exhibited a high area specific capacitance of 97.3 mF cm^-2 at 1 mA cm^-2. Furthermore, the PPy/GO film supercapacitor also showed excellent cycling stability and good flexibility.

Intermittent electro field regulated mutualistic interspecies electron transfer away from the electrodes for bioenergy recovery from wastewater

Lately, extracellular electron transfer (EET) is widely disclosed on the surface of the bioelectrodes, and conductive (bio)carriers involved in anaerobic biodegradation/biosynthesis. By electrostimulation, microbial consortia colonize the electrodes and accelerate substrate (waste/wastewater) metabolization on the bioanode or biosynthesize value-added products (methane, acetate, etc.) on the biocathode. However, the connections and contributions of planktonic microbial communities have not been effectually understood. Herein, electromethanogenesis were comprehensively investigated in response to different driving-force modes: intermittent electric field applied by manual on-off or natural solar power and continuous electrical field. Intermittent modes implied preferable electron transfer efficiency, higher methane yield and energy recovery efficiencies from wastewater by the microbes in the bulk solutions. Microbial community analysis revealed that less electroactive microorganisms and acetotrophic methanogens in the bulk solutions were accommodated under the intermittent modes than the continuous electrical field, whereas more fermentative bacteria and hydrogenotrophic methanogens evolved in the intermittent driving modes, implying that the interspecies electron transfer both on and away from the electrodes were favorably regulated. Redundancy and network analysis proved that more complicated ecological interactions were shown in the bulk solutions with the periodic on/off of electrical field. These results hinted that the electrostimulation effectively regulated EET bacteria, even in the bulk solutions, while more efficient electron flow to methane through interspecies electron transfer was developed during the intermittent driving regulation.

Solution-Processed Synthesis of Copper Oxide (Cu x O) Thin Films for Efficient Photocatalytic Solar Water Splitting

This article reports a solution-processed synthesis of copper oxide (Cu x O) to be used as a potential photocathode for solar hydrogen production in the solar water-splitting system. Cu x O thin films were synthesized through the reduction of copper iodide (CuI) thin films by sodium hydroxide (NaOH), which were deposited by the spin coating method from CuI solution in a polar aprotic solvent (acetonitrile). The phase and crystalline quality of the synthesized Cu x O thin films prepared at various annealing temperatures were investigated using various techniques. The X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy studies confirm the presence of Cu2O, CuO/Cu2O mixed phase, and pure CuO phase at annealing temperatures of 250, 300, and 350 °C, respectively. It is revealed from the experimental findings that the synthesized Cu x O thin films with an annealing temperature of 350 °C possess the highest crystallinity, smooth surface morphology, and higher carrier density. The highest photocurrent density of -19.12 mA/cm2 at -1 V versus RHE was achieved in the photoelectrochemical solar hydrogen production system with the use of the Cu x O photocathode annealed at a temperature of 350 °C. Therefore, it can be concluded that Cu x O synthesized by the spin coating method through the acetonitrile solvent route can be used as an efficient photocathode in the solar water-splitting system.

Efficient antimony removal by self-assembled core-shell nanocomposite of Co3O4@rGO and the analysis of its adsorption mechanism

Co₃O₄@rGO were facilely prepared by template free self-assemble in this study. The morphology of Co₃O₄@rGO was actiniaria-like core-shell structural nanocomposites. The formation mechanism of Co₃O₄@rGO core-shell nanocomposite was discussed according to its significant time-dependent morphology evolution course. To evaluate the application potential of Co₃O₄@rGO, its adsorption performance toward highly toxic antimony ions were studied. The Co₃O₄@rGO nanocomposite exhibit high anti-interference ability and high adsorption ability. The maximum adsorption capacities towards Sb(III) and Sb(V) are 151.04 and 165.51 mg/g, respectively. River water samples containing antimony violating the limit were used to evaluate the practical application of Co₃O₄@rGO, and high performance was achieved. The EU and China limits for antimony in drinking water can be met by using mesoporous Co₃O₄@rGO treating the actual river water samples with original antimony concentration lower than 50 μg/L. Adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics, pH and co-existing ions effects were also studied in details. The results indicate that mesoporous Co₃O₄@rGO is an excellent adsorbent for antimony removal. Mesoporous Co₃O₄@rGO nanocomposite is a potential candidate for antimony removal from waste water.

The new insight about electrode interface behaviour via in situ ultrasound three-dimensional representation monitoring based on a bio-electrochemical system

Behaviour of the electrode interface is a determining factor that affects the performance of a bio-electrochemical system (BES). Examples include the formation of an electroactive biofilm, electrode degradation and renewal. However, underlying mechanisms are unclear, and traditional approaches make it difficult to achieve in situ monitoring. In this study, a novel technology using ultrasound three-dimensional representation (UTDR) was used to track in situ electrode interface behaviour based on the correspondence between acoustic and electrical signals. A series of wavelet analyses showed that the formation of an electroactive biofilm is a lengthy process with multiple physiological steps, and biofilm thickness increased by approximately 600 μm after 40 days of operation. At the same time, directional migration of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ confirmed acceleration of the salting out on the cathode, which forms a compacted structure with the biological layer. Furthermore, UTDR combined with electrochemical methods allowed for comprehensive evaluation of AC impact, and indicated that AC (1 Hz, 20 V) could effectively desquamate the contaminating solids and restore power density to 93.4% of initial. These results show that UTDR is a sensitive and effective method for revealing microscopic changes on the electrode surface, which gives it potential wide applicability to interfacial processes.

Recent Developments of Effective Catalysts for Hydrogen Storage Technology Using N-Ethylcarbazole

Hydrogen energy is considered to be a desired energy storage carrier because of its high-energy density, extensive sources, and is environmentally friendly. The development of hydrogen storage material, especially liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC), has drawn intensive attention to address the problem of hydrogen utilization. Hydrogen carrier is a material that can reversibly absorb and release hydrogen using catalysts at elevated temperature, in which LOHC mainly relies on the covalent bonding of hydrogen during storage to facilitate long-distance transportation and treatment. In this review, the chemical properties and state-of-the-art of LOHCs were investigated and discussed. It reviews the latest research progress with regard to liquid organic hydrogen storage materials, namely N-ethylcarbazole, and the recent progress in the preparation of efficient catalysts for N-ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation by using metal multiphase catalysts supported by carbon–nitrogen materials is expounded. Several approaches have been considered to obtain efficient catalysts such as increasing the surface area of the support, optimizing particle size, and enhancing the porous structure of the support. This review provides a new direction for the research of hydrogen storage materials and considerations for follow-up research.

The electrochemical degradation of the metronidazole (MNZ) antibiotic using electrochemical oxidation on a stainless steel316 coated with beta lead oxide (SS316/β-PbO2) anode

Metronidazole (MNZ) is one of the pharmaceutical products which is considered as one of the most important pollutants in the environment due to its wide use and resistance to biodegradation. Hence, the purpose of this study is the optimization of the electrochemical degradation of the metronidazole (MNZ) antibiotic using electrochemical oxidation on a stainless steel316 coated with beta lead oxide (SS316/β-PbO2) anode. In the studied electrochemical process, the response surface methodology (RSM) involving a five-level ((pH (A) and electrolysis time (B), current density (C), and MNZ concentration (D)). The central composite design (CCD) was employed for optimizing and modeling of the electrochemical process in the degradation of MNZ. The preparation of SS316/β-PbO2 anode was accomplished using the electro-deposition method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were conducted for accurate evaluation and characterization of the coated electrode. The effect of influencing factors on electrochemical degradation of MNZ was studied, and the highest MNZ degradation efficiency was observed to be 98.88% after 120 min under the optimal conditions including the supporting electrolyte concentration of 1.0 g/100 cc, the initial MNZ concentration of 30.1 mg/L, pH of 4 and the current density of 9.99 mA/cm2. The linear regression coefficient (R2) between experiments and different response values in the model was 0.99. Moreover, the statistical analysis of the results indicated that in the range studied, the most effective parameters in MNZ degradation are MNZ concentration and pH. In general, it can be concluded that the electrochemical process using SS316/β-PbO2 anode can effectively eliminate metronidazole, and it can be considered as an efficient method in the degradation of various pollutants.

Enhanced adsorption of antimonate by ball-milled microscale zero valent iron/pyrite composite: adsorption properties and mechanism insight

Ball-milling is considered as an economical and simple technology to produce novel engineered materials. The ball-milled microscale zero valent iron/pyrite composite (BM-ZVI/FeS₂) had been synthesized through ball-milling technology and applied for highly efficient sequestration of antimonate (Sb(V)) in aqueous solution. BM-ZVI/FeS₂ exhibited good Sb(V) removal efficiency (≥ 99.18%) at initial concentration less than 100 mg Sb(V)/L. Compared to ball-milled zero valent iron (ZVI) and pyrite (FeS₂), BM-ZVI/FeS₂ exhibited extremely higher removal efficiency due to the good synergistic adsorption effect. BM-ZVI/FeS₂ showed efficient removal performance at broad pH (2.6-10.6). Moreover, the coexisting anions had negligible inhibition influence on the Sb(V) removal. The antimony mine wastewater can be efficiently remediated by BM-ZVI/FeS₂, and the residual Sb(V) concentrations (< 0.96 μg/L) can meet the mandatory discharge limit in drinking water (5 μg Sb/L). Experimental and model results demonstrated that endothermic reaction and chemisorption were involved in Sb(V) removal by BM-ZVI/FeS₂. The XRD and XPS analyses confirmed that the complete corrosion of ZVI occurred on BM-ZVI/FeS₂ after Sb(V) adsorption, resulting in the enhanced Sb(V) sequestration. Mechanism analyses showed that the excellent removal performance of BM-ZVI/FeS₂ was ascribed to the high coverage of iron (hydr)oxide oxidized from ZVI. Because of the advantages of economical cost, high Sb(V) removal capacity and easy availability, BM-ZVI/FeS₂ offers a promising adsorbent for Sb(V) remediation.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 self-assembled Pd-cells-rGO conductive composite for enhancing electrocatalysis

Biosynthesized noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) as promising green catalysts for electrochemical application has invited a lot of attention. However, effective electron transfer between biosynthesized NPs and electrode remains a challenge due to the uncontrollable and poor conductive property of cell substrates. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was introduced into a bio-Pd synthesis process governed by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, which was demonstrated to be simultaneously reduced with Pd(II) and transformed to reduced GO (rGO), resulting in the formation of a Pd-cells-rGO composite. Compared to the control without rGO (Pd-cells), the electrochemical conductivity of Pd-cells-rGO composite increased from almost zero to 196 μS cm^-1, indicating the rGO facilities the electron transport across the composite. Electrochemical characterizations revealed the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of Pd in Pd-cells-rGO was enlarged by increasing the amount of rGO in the composite, clearly indicating that the conductive network created by rGO enable the Pd NPs receive electrons from electrode and become electrochemical active. A considerable enhancement of electrocatalytic activity was further confirmed for Pd-cells-rGO as indicated by 36.7- and 17.2-fold increase (Pd-cells-rGO with Pd/GO ratio of 5/1 vs Pd-cells) of steady state current density toward hydrogen evolution and nitrobenzene reduction at -0.7 V and -0.55 V vs Ag/AgCl, respectively. We also compared the electrocatalytic performance with MWCNTs hybrids Pd-cells-CNTs. It was found that the association of Pd, cells and rGO creates an interactive and synergistic environment to allow higher conductivity and catalytic activity under the same amount of carbon nanomaterial. The strategy developed in this work activates a highly reactive NPs and proposed a designable protocol for enhancing electrocatalytic activity of biocatalysts.

Evaluating the adsorptivity of organo-functionalized silica nanoparticles towards heavy metals: Quantitative comparison and mechanistic insight

Organo-functionalized SiO₂ nanoparticles are regarded as promising adsorbents for capture of heavy metals. However, actual adsorptivity of a specific functional group onto SiO₂ surface is unclear, thus extending a debate on which type of organic group possesses a better affinity toward heavy metals. Herein, surface functionalization of SiO₂ with different groups (i.e., -EDTA (ethylenediamine triacetic acid), -COOH, -SO₃H, -SH and -NH₂) were achieved by a facile silylating reaction. Batch experiments indicated that adsorption capacity of SiO₂ was remarkably improved by surface functionalization. Quantitative analysis manifested that one mole of EDTA grafted onto SiO₂ surface can adsorb 1.51 mol of Pb(II) ions, which was 7.7, 17.1, 28.4 and 50.2-fold larger than those of COOH-, SO₃H-, SH- and NH₂-functionalized SiO₂, respectively. This is first time to evaluate adsorptivity of functionalized SiO₂ on the basis of per effective functional group, which may repair deficiency of conventional assessment method that calculated on the basis of per unit mass. Further, adsorption mechanism of these functionalized SiO₂ were identified and uncovered by experimental and theoretical studies. This work not only develops an efficient adsorbent for heavy metal remediation but also provides a valuable insight for evaluation and design of novel SiO₂-based materials.

In situ fabrication of I-doped Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions for enhanced photodegradation activity under visible light

Iodine-doped Bi₂O₂CO₃/g-C₃N₄ heterojunctions consisting of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) and iodine-doped bismutite (Bi₂O₂CO₃) components were successfully in situ synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Characterizations such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) demonstrated iodine was favorably doped into the Bi₂O₂CO₃ component, of which the {001} facets grew in situ from {002} facets of g-C₃N₄ for the heterostructure construction of I-doped Bi₂O₂CO₃/g-C₃N₄ (IB/CN). The photocatalytic activity of catalysts was evaluated by the degradation efficiency of 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene under visible light. 1.5-IB/CN with a reasonable iodine doping amount (Bi: I molar ratio = 1.0: 1.5) exhibited the superior photodegradation performance compared to Bi₂O₂CO₃, achieving an 85.5% removal ratio after 100 min illumination. The enhanced activity of 1.5-IB/CN was attributed to both of the heterostructure that promoted the separation of photoinduced carriers and iodine doping that tuned the bandgap for sufficient visible-light harvesting. The degradation intermediates of 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene in the system were determined and its possible photodegradation pathway was proposed in detail. This study provides a rational approach for enhancing the visible-light catalytic activity of wide-bandgap Bi₂O₂CO₃, and reveals a new perspective on the removal mechanism of organic pollutants.

Direct Z-scheme 1D/2D WO2.72/ZnIn2S4 hybrid photocatalysts with highly-efficient visible-light-driven photodegradation towards tetracycline hydrochloride removal

There are increasing environmental concerns of serious pollution from emission of antibiotic wastewater. Herein, a series of direct Z-scheme WO_2.72/ZnIn₂S₄ (WOZIS) hybrid photocatalysts composed of one-dimensional (1D) WO_2.72 (WO) nanorods and two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS) nanosheets have been designed and constructed for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation without presence of solid-state electron mediators. The crystalline phase, chemical composition, morphology, optical properties and photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples were characterized by the XRD, XPS, SEM, HRTEM, BET, UV-vis DRS, and PL. Obviously, all the WOZIS hybrid photocatalysts exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity towards TCH degradation. Meanwhile, WOZIS-1 sample with WO/ZIS molar ratio of 1:1 showed the highest photocatalytic activity. The significantly enhanced photoactivity of WOZIS hybrid photocatalyst was due to Z-scheme charge separation mechanism based on the build of tight interfacial contacts between WO nanorods and ZIS nanosheets, thereby driving efficient charge separation. Moreover, the high photocatalytic stability of as-prepared WOZIS-1 hybrid sample was revealed through seven successive cycling reactions.

Novel immobilized ternary photocatalytic polymer film based airlift reactor for efficient degradation of complex phthalocyanine dye wastewater

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as well as graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) catalysts were synthesized and a physical admixture of rGO and g-C₃N₄ along with TiO₂ in the ratio of 1:1:1 by weight was immobilized in a polystyrene film using the facile solvent casting method. An internal loop airlift reactor with a working volume of 1.2 litres incorporating the prepared polymer-based photocatalytic film was designed and tested for the photocatalytic degradation of remazol turquoise blue dye synthetic wastewater. The reactor parameters affecting the photocatalytic activity such as airflow rate and D_i/D_o (ratio of draft tube diameter to outer tube diameter) were evaluated. The successful operation of the reactor obtained using the ternary immobilized catalyst mixture film gave 92.25% total organic carbon reduction and 94% decolourization within 140 min, compared to 91% decolourization by the slurry form within 40 min. Complete and quicker decolourization of the dye was also demonstrated under the influence of O₃ or H₂O₂. The immobilized catalyst was successfully reused four times. The ternary catalyst admixture employed in this work and the unique design of the photocatalytic reactor helps to increase the degradation rate of toxic textile effluents thus making it suitable for larger scales of treatment.

Effect of Deposition Parameters on Electrochemical Properties of Polypyrrole-Graphene Oxide Films

Graphene oxide (GO)-modified polypyrrole (PPy) coatings were obtained by electrochemical methods in the presence of the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties of the coatings were assessed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry at varying scan rates, respectively. The properties of the obtained coatings were analyzed with the GO and PPy loadings and electrodeposition mode. The hybrid coatings obtained galvanostatically showed a coarser appearance than those deposited by cyclic voltammetry CV mode and improved performance, respectively, which was further enhanced by GO and PPy loading. The capacitance enhancement can be attributed to the SDS surfactant that well dispersed the GO sheets, thus allowing the use of lower GO content for improved contribution, while the choice of suitable electrodeposition parameters is highly important for improving the applicability of GO-modified PPy coatings in energy storage applications.

Microfluidic Printing of Three-Dimensional Graphene Electroactive Microfibrous Scaffolds

Graphene materials have attracted special attention because of their electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, and favorable biocompatibility. Although various methods have been developed for fabricating micro/nano conductive fibrous scaffolds, it is still challenging to fabricate the three-dimensional (3D) graphene fibrous scaffolds. Herein, we developed a new method, termed as microfluidic 3D printing technology (M3DP), to fabricate 3D graphene oxide (GO) microfibrous scaffolds with an adjustable fiber length, fiber diameter, and scaffold structure by integrating the microfluidic spinning technology with a programmable 3D printing system. GO microfibrous scaffolds were then transformed into conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) microfibrous scaffolds by hydrothermal reduction. Our results demonstrated that the fabricated 3D fibrous graphene scaffolds exhibited tunable structures, maneuverable mechanical properties, and good electrical conductivity and biocompatibility, as reflected by the adhesion and proliferation of SH-SY5Y cells on the graphene microfibrous scaffolds in an obviously oriented manner. The developed M3DP would be a powerful tool for fabricating 3D graphene microfibrous scaffolds for electroactive tissue regeneration and drug-screening applications.

Mutual effect between electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) and azo dye in bio-electrochemical system (BES)

Herein, the mutual effect between azo dye and the performance of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) is investigated in detail, which is crucial to understand and control the bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) operation for azo dye containing wastewater treatment. EAB is enriched at controlled potential of -0.2 V vs Ag/AgCl in single-chamber BESs. Over 95% azo dye (alizarin yellow R (AYR)) was decolorized regardless of the initial AYR concentration ranging from 30 to 120 mg/L within 24 h. The fastest decolorization rate was obtained at AYR initial concentration of 70 mg/L, which was 4.25 times greater in the closed circuit BESs than that in the open circuit one. 16S rRNA gene based microbial community analysis showed that Geobacter was dominant in EAB with relative abundance increased from 77.98% (0 mg/L AYR) to 92.22% (70 mg/L AYR), indicating that azo dye selectively boosts the growth of exoelectrogens in electrode biofilm communities. Under electricity stimulation, extracellular process can be mutually conducted by azo dye compounds, which is favorable for accelerating reaction rate and avoiding of significant toxic effect on EAB.

Efficient removal of arsenic from groundwater using iron oxide nanoneedle array-decorated biochar fibers with high Fe utilization and fast adsorption kinetics

Although Fe-based biochar adsorbents are attractive for removing arsenic from water due to their advantages of costing little and being producible at a large scale, the practical applications of these granular adsorbents are mainly limited by low Fe utilization and slow adsorption kinetics. In this study, iron oxide nanoneedle array-decorated biochar fibers (Fe-NN/BFs) adsorbents have been prepared through a simple hydrothermal reaction. The vertical growth of iron oxide nanoneedle arrays on the surface of biochar fibers maximizes Fe utilization and shortens As diffusion distance, thereby increasing As removal kinetics and capacity. Batch experiments show that the adsorption capacities of Fe-NN/BFs for As(V) and As(III) reach to 93.94 and 70.22 mg/g-Fe at pH 7.0, respectively. As(V) levels (275 μg/L) in groundwater are rapidly reduced (less than 5 min) to below 10 μg/L using Fe-NN/BFs (1 g/L) at pH 6.7. Similar As(III) levels can be reduced to below 10 μg/L within 30 min by Fe-NN/BFs (1.5 g/L). In fixed-bed experiments, the treatment volumes of As(V) and As(III) spiked groundwater reach to 2900 BV (26.2 L) and 2500 BV (22.6 L), respectively, using two columns packed with Fe-NN/BFs in tandem (C₀ = 275 μg/L, 2 g of adsorbents in each column). When the As concentration in the influent is reduced to 50 μg/L (As(V): 25 μg/L + As(III): 25 μg/L), the treatment volume using one column reaches up to 11000 BV. The Fe-NN/BFs packed column can be easily regenerated and reused many times. After four regenerations, the treatment volume of As(V) and As(III) were reduced by 10.4% and 22.8%, respectively.

Power production and microbial community composition in thermophilic acetate-fed up-flow and flow-through microbial fuel cells

The microbial communities developed from a mixed-species culture in up-flow and flow-through configurations of thermophilic (55 °C) microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and their power production from acetate, were investigated. The up-flow MFC was operated for 202 days, obtaining an average power density of 0.13 W/m³, and Tepidiphilus was the dominant transcriptionally-active microorganisms. The planktonic community developed in the up-flow MFC was used to inoculate a flow-through MFC resulting in the proliferation of Ureibacillus, whose relative abundance increased from 1 to 61% after 45 days. Despite the differences between the up-flow and flow-through MFCs, including the anode electrode, hydrodynamic conditions, and the predominant microorganism, similar (p = 0.05) volumetric power (0.11-0.13 W/m³), coulombic efficiency (16-18%) and acetate consumption rates (55-69 mg/L/d) were obtained from both. This suggests that though MFC design can shape the active component of the thermophilic microbial community, the consortia are resilient and can maintain similar performance in different MFC configurations.

Stepwise preparation of Ti-doped functionalized carbon nitride nanoparticles and hybrid TiO2/graphitic-C3N4 for detection of free residual chlorine and visible-light photocatalysis

Ti-doped functionalized carbon nitride nanoparticles and hybrid TiO2/graphitic-C3N4 were prepared stepwise and applied to the detection of free residual chlorine and visible-light photocatalysis. The photocatalytic degradation rate of methylene blue by the latter could reach 24.5 times that without a catalyst.

Lattice-Defect-Enhanced Adsorption of Arsenic on Zirconia Nanospheres: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

Zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) nanoadsorbents exhibit great potential in the remediation of arsenic-polluted water. However, physicochemical structure-adsorption performance relationship is not well-understood, which retards further development of high-performance ZrO₂ nanoadsorbents. Herein, a facile-controlled crystallization strategy was developed to synthesize defective ZrO₂ with the assistance of organic ligands. Systematic characterizations showed that this proposed synthesis strategy can be exploited to regulate the defective density of ZrO₂, whereas other structural properties remain almost unchanged. Batch adsorption experiments exhibited that UiO-66-SH-A with a higher lattice defect possessed a larger capacity and a faster rate for the uptake of As(III)/As(V). The maximum capacities of UiO-66-SH-A to uptake As(III) and As(V) were up to 90.7 and 98.8 mg/g, respectively, which are 12.3 and 11.5 times larger than those of UiO-66-A. These results from the structure-performance analysis and theoretical calculations further reveal that lattice defect plays a key role in the enhancement of arsenic adsorption on ZrO₂. We hope this new understanding of the structure-dependent adsorption performance will provide a valuable insight for designing Zr-based nanoadsorbents to capture arsenic.

Decorating Ag3PO4 nanodots on mesoporous silica-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaLuF4 for efficient sunlight-driven photocatalysis: synergy of broad spectrum absorption and pollutant adsorption-enrichment

A broad-spectrum photocatalyst with pollutant-adsorption capability was synthesized by decorating silver orthophosphate nanodots on mesoporous silica-functionalized upconversion nanoparticles for efficient natural sunlight-driven photocatalysis.
