Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of pre-gelation on cellulose dissolved in LiCl/DMAc solutions to enhance the properties of regenerated cellulose materials. This study focuses on characterizing the crystallinity, molecular orientation, and mechanical performance of cellulose fibers and hydrogels prepared with and without pre-gelation treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that crystallinity improvement from 55% in untreated fibers to 59% in fibers pre-gelled for 3 and 7 days, indicating a more ordered arrangement of cellulose chains post-regeneration. Additionally, XRD patterns show improved chain alignment in pre-gelled fibers, as indicated by reduced full width at half the maximum of Azimuthal scans. Mechanical testing demonstrates a 30% increase in tensile strength and a doubling of the compression modulus for pre-gelled fibers compared to untreated fibers. These findings underscore the role of pre-gelation in optimizing cellulose material properties for applications ranging from advanced textiles to biomaterials and sustainable packaging. Future research directions include further exploration of the structural and functional benefits of pre-gelation in cellulose processing and its broader implications in material science and engineering.

Abstract
Water scarcity and land infertility pose significant challenges to agricultural development, particularly in arid and semiarid regions. Improving soil-water-retention capacity and fertilizer utilization efficiency through the application of soil additives has become a pivotal approach in agricultural practices. Hydrogels exhibit exceptional water absorption and fertilizer retention capabilities, making them extensively utilized in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and desert control. Currently, most reviews primarily focus on the raw materials, classification, synthesis methods, and application prospects of hydrogels, with limited attention given to strategies for enhancing water-retention performance, mechanisms underlying fertilizer absorption, and environmental risks. This review covers the commonly used cross-linking methods in hydrogel synthesis and the structure-activity relationship between hydrogels and water as well as fertilizer. Additionally, a thorough analysis of the ecological benefits and risks associated with hydrogels is presented. Finally, future prospects and challenges are delineated from the perspectives of material design and engineering applications.

Abstract
This work presents an eco-friendly approach for determining free glycerol in biodiesel samples, using a cellulose monolith stir bar in the sorptive extraction method with analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography and a refractive index detector. The cellulose monolith was produced from cellulose acetate by non-solvent-induced phase separation and subsequent alkaline deacetylation. The cellulose monolith presented a hierarchically porous structure, with 68% porosity and almost total deacetylation, with morphological and polarity characteristics that favor an efficient extraction of free glycerol from biodiesel. The sorptive extraction method using a cellulose monolith stir bar was optimized, obtaining a total extraction time of 30 min at 70 °C, using ultrapure water as the desorption solvent, and extraction of free glycerol of 93.6 ± 2.3%. The proposed method showed selectivity in free glycerol extraction, with limits of detection and quantification of 6.60 × 10-5% w/w and 2.18 × 10-4% w/w, respectively. Compared with the official reference method, the proposed one presented similar precision and accuracy, with few manipulations and any reagent/solvents. Furthermore, it is compatible with the principles of green chemistry and can be considered an eco-friendly method for determining free glycerol in biodiesel.

Abstract
In this study, we conducted research on the preparation of aerogels using cellulose and starch as the primary materials, with the addition of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent. The chemical, morphological and textural characteristics of the aerogels were found to be influenced by the proportions of cellulose, starch, and cross-linking agent that were utilized. An increase in the proportion of cellulose led to stronger adsorption forces within the aerogel structure. The aerogel showed a fine mesh internal structure, but the pores gradually increased with the further increase in cellulose. Notably, when the mass fractions of starch and cellulose were 5 wt% and 1 wt% respectively, the aerogels exhibited the smallest pore size and largest porosity. With an increase in the crosslinking agent, the internal structure of the aerogel first became dense and then loose, and the best internal structure was displayed at the addition of 3 wt%. Through texture analysis and the swelling test, the impact of the proportion of cellulose and MBA on the aerogel structure was significant. Dye adsorption experiments indicated that MBA affected the water absorption and expansion characteristics of the aerogel by improving the pore structure. Lastly, in tests involving the loading of vitamin E, the aerogels exhibited a higher capacity for incorporating vitamin E compared to native starch.

Abstract
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been a useful therapeutic tool in rehabilitation, particularly for people with paralysis. To deliver stimulation in its most basic setup, a stimulator and at least a pair of electrodes are needed. The electrodes are an essential part of the system since they allow the transduction of the stimulator signals into the body. Their performance can influence the experience of both patient and therapist in terms of movement generation, comfort, and ease of use. For non-invasive surface stimulation, current electrode options have several limitations involving their interfacing with the skin, practical inconveniences, and short-term functionality. Standard hydrogel electrodes tend to lose their adhesion with the skin quickly, while dry or textile electrodes require constant wetting to be comfortable. In this paper, we present the fabrication, characterization, and FES testing of a new aerogel-based wet electrode for surface stimulation applications for long-term and reusable FES applications. We investigated its functionality by stimulating the biceps brachii of twelve healthy individuals and collected elbow joint torque and comfort ratings for three different intensity levels (low, moderate, and high) of FES. Comparing to standard hydrogel electrodes, no statistically significant difference was found for any intensity of stimulation in either torque or comfort. Overall, the new aerogel-based electrode has an appropriate impedance, is flexible and soft, is conformable to the skin, has a high water absorption and retention, and can be used for FES purposes.

Abstract
Macromolecules obtained from renewable natural sources are gaining increasing attention as components for a vast variety of sustainable polymer-based materials. Natural raw materials can facilitate continuous-flow production due to their year-round availability and short replenishment period. They also open new opportunities for chemists and biologists to design and create "bioreplacement" and "bioadvantaged" polymers, where complex structures produced by nature are being modified, upgraded, and utilized to create novel materials. Bio-based macromonomers are expected not only to compete with but to replace some petroleum-based analogs, as well. The development of novel sustainable materials is an ongoing and very dynamic process. There are multiple strategies for transforming natural macromolecules into sophisticated value-added products. Some methods include chemical modification of macromolecules, while others include blending several components into one new system. One of the most promising approaches for incorporating renewable macromolecules into new products is the synthesis of hybrid networks based on one or more natural components. Each one has unique characteristics, so its incorporation into a network brings new sustainable materials with properties that can be tuned according to their end-use. This article reviews the current state-of-the-art and future potential of renewable natural macromolecules as sustainable building blocks for the synthesis and use of hybrid polymer networks. The most recent advancements and applications that involve polymers, such as cellulose, chitin, alginic acid, gellan gum, lignin, and their derivatives, are discussed.

Abstract
This study reports the synthesis of methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) crosslinked cellulose-kaolin (CMK) composite hydrogels. The internal structures of hydrogels were deduced using network parameters, viz. elastic modulus, average molecular weight, mesh size, and effective crosslink. Meanwhile, combustion behavior was investigated using the cone calorimeter test (CCT), limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical flammability test (VFT), and open fire test (OFT). Our results revealed that kaolin addition improves the fire retardancy of hydrogels but reduces their swelling ability. Hydrogel having cellulose to MBA ratio of 1:2 and 2 % w/v kaolin (CM2K2) produced 63 % wt. char residue and the hydrogel-coated cotton fabric exhibited the lowest heat release rate (HRR) of 26.60 kJ/m2 and total heat release (THR) of 0.9 MJ/m2. The LOI of the cotton fabric surged from 20 % to 34.37 % after hydrogel coating. Kinetic analysis using the isoconversional model yielded the highest activation energy (216 kJ/mol) for the CM2K2 hydrogel, corroborating the increased LOI after kaolin addition. VFT and OFT validated the delay in the burning process and the formation of a char layer, which protected the underlying layer of cotton from burning. Overall, cellulose-kaolin hydrogels developed in this study are effective green fire retardant coatings for flammable materials.

Superabsorbent hydrogels (SAH) are crosslinked three-dimensional networks distinguished by their super capacity to stabilize a large quantity of water without dissolving. Such behavior enables them to engage in various applications. Cellulose and its derived nanocellulose can become SAHs as an appealing, versatile, and sustainable platform because of abundance, biodegradability, and renewability compared to petroleum-based materials. In this review, a synthetic strategy that reflects starting cellulosic resources to their associated synthons, crosslinking types, and synthetic controlling factors was highlighted. Representative examples of cellulose and nanocellulose SAH and an in-depth discussion of structure-absorption relationships were listed. Finally, various applications of cellulose and nanocellulose SAH, challenges and existing problems, and proposed future research pathways were listed.

Abstract
Cellulose was extracted from wood dust waste samples of Daniella oliveri and corn cobs by acetic acid and alkaline pretreatment methods, while microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) derivative was produced by acid hydrolysis in 2 M HCl. The samples were tested for pH, moisture content, swelling capacities and ash contents. The data obtained were compared with those of commercial MCCs found in the literature. The functional groups in the microcrystalline cellulose derivatives was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic method with characteristic absorption bands of;–OH stretching at 3416 cm-1; C-H stretching at 2918 cm-1; -OH bending at 1377 cm-1; 1159 cm-1; and C-O-C pyranose ring skeletal vibrations at 1026-1033 cm-1. The crystallinity absorption bands appeared at 1436 and 850 cm-1. The characteristic morphological features were established by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the crystallinity of the microcrystalline cellulose was further confirmed using the X-ray powder diffraction (X-RD) technique, which showed three main reflections at 2θ=14.70°, 22.09°, and 34.24°.These results supported that microcrystalline cellulose derivative as cellulose I type and the acid pretreatment did not affect the structure of the MCC. The crystallinity indices were 69.3 and 73.2%, respectively. Daniella Oliveri and corn cob microcrystalline cellulose are, therefore, potential materials for further processing.

Abstract
In view of the deficiencies in the preparation of cellulose gels, such as, cumbersome process, harsh conditions, high consumption of chemicals, secondary pollution caused by side reactions, this work reports a facile approach to make cellulose/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) hydrogels and aerogels via mixing cellulose with N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) and MWCNTs in NaOH/urea/H2O aqueous solution. The gels were revealed to be formed by an addition reaction between the double bonds of MBA and the hydroxyl groups of cellulose and the intermolecular interactions between cellulose and MWCNTs. The preparation process can be realized at room temperature and atmospheric pressure without the intervention of ultrasonic dispersion, catalyst and initiator. The gelation time, puncture strength and water retention ability of the hydrogels were investigated. Results showed that, compared with pure cellulose hydrogel, cellulose/MWNCTs hydrogels have obviously shorter sol-gel transition time (124-129.2 min), higher puncture strength (29.6022-34.2854 KPa) and water retention ability (274.2619-301.7291 g/g). Cellulose/MWCNTs aerogels possessed three dimensional network with macroporous structure (about 500 μm), low density (0.00546-0.00557 g/cm3), high porosity (99.6360-99.6426 %), good thermal stability (242 °C) and certain absorbency to methylene blue (233.2901-242.1122 mg/g).

Abstract
For porous protein scaffolds to be employed in tissue-engineered structures, the development of cost-effective, macroporous, and mechanically improved protein-based hydrogels, without compromising the original properties of native protein, is crucial. Here, we introduced a facile method of albumin methacryloyl transparent hydrogels and opaque cryogels with adjustable porosity and improved mechanical characteristics via controlling polymerization temperatures (room temperature and −80 °C). The structural, morphological, mechanical, and physical characteristics of both porous albumin methacryloyl biomaterials were investigated using FTIR, CD, SEM, XRD, compression tests, TGA, and swelling behavior. The biodegradation and biocompatibility of the various gels were also carefully examined. Albumin methacryloyl opaque cryogels outperformed their counterpart transparent hydrogels in terms of mechanical characteristics and interconnecting macropores. Both materials demonstrated high mineralization potential as well as good cell compatibility. The solvation and phase separation owing to ice crystal formation during polymerization are attributed to the transparency of hydrogels and opacity of cryogels, respectively, suggesting that two fully protein-based hydrogels could be used as visible detectors/sensors in medical devices or bone regeneration scaffolds in the future.

Abstract
Abstract Tissue paper was the only paper grade whose consumption increased during 2020 in Europe. In a highly competitive context, this work explores a strategy based on bisacrylamide cross-linkers and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), seeking to enhance the water uptake of pulps for tissue paper and the key properties of the resulting tissue sheets: water absorption capacity, capillarity, softness, porosity, and strength. For that, α-cellulose from cotton and a kraft hardwood pulp, in parallel, were reacted with N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide, both in the absence and in the presence of PVA. The water desorption rate of the modified polymers was monitored. Pulp blends were then mixed with a conventional softwood pulp (30%) to prepare laboratory tissue paper sheets (20 g m–2). For cotton cellulose, cross-linking with PVA more than doubled the water uptake, up to 7.3 g/g. A significant enhancement was also obtained in the case of pulps, up to 9.6 g/g, and in the case of paper, to 11.9 g/g. This improvement was consistent with a drastic increase in porosity, and it was not detrimental to paper strength. Graphical Abstract ![]()

Abstract
Spontaneously formed hydrogels are attracting increasing interest as injectable or wound dressing materials because they do not require additional reactions or toxic crosslinking reagents. Highly valuable properties such as low viscosity before external application, adequate filmogenic capacity, rapid gelation and tissue adhesion are required in order to use them for those therapeutic applications. In addition, biocompatibility and biodegradability are also mandatory. Accordingly, biopolymers, such as hyaluronic acid (HA) and chitosan (CHI), that have shown great potential for wound healing applications are excellent candidates due to their unique physiochemical and biological properties, such as moisturizing and antimicrobial ability, respectively. In this study, both biopolymers were modified by covalent anchoring of catechol groups, and the obtained hydrogels were characterized by studying, in particular, their tissue adhesiveness and film forming capacity for potential skin wound healing applications. Tissue adhesiveness was related to o-quinone formation over time and monitored by visible spectroscopy. Consequently, an opposite effect was observed for both polysaccharides. As gelation advances for HA-CA, it becomes more adhesive, while competitive reactions of quinone in CHI-CA slow down tissue adhesiveness and induce a detriment of the filmogenic properties.

Electromagnetic Shielding and Flame Retardancy of Composite Films Constructed with Cellulose and Graphene Nanoplates. MATERIALS 2022; 15:ma15031088. [PMID: 35161033 PMCID: PMC8839778 DOI: 10.3390/ma15031088] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/15/2021] [Revised: 01/14/2022] [Accepted: 01/26/2022] [Indexed: 11/17/2022]
Abstract
Aimed at improving the electromagnetic (EM) shielding and flame retardancy of cellulose materials, graphene (GE) nanoplates were introduced into cellulose matrix films by blending in1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. The structure and performance of the obtained composite films were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, EM shielding effectiveness (SE), and combustion tests. GE introduction formed and stacked laminated structures in the films after drying due to controlled shrinkage of the cellulose matrix. The lamination of GE nanoplates into the films was beneficial for providing EM shielding due to multiple internal reflection of EM radiation; furthermore, they also increased flame resistance based on the “labyrinth effect.” The SE of these composite films increased gradually with increased GE content and reached 22.3 dB under an incident frequency of 1500 MHz. TG analysis indicated that these composite films possessed improved thermal stability due to GE addition. Reduced flammability was confirmed by their extended times to ignition or inability to be ignited, reduced heat release rates observed in cone calorimetry tests, and increased limiting oxygen index values. These films with improved EM shielding and flame retardancy could be considered potential candidates for multipurpose materials in various applications, such as electronics and radar evasion.

Abstract
Hydrogels are an attractive system for a myriad of applications. While most hydrogels are usually formed from synthetic materials, lignocellulosic biomass appears as a sustainable alternative for hydrogel development. The valorization of biomass, especially the non-woody biomass to meet the growing demand of the substitution of synthetics and to leverage its benefits for cellulose hydrogel fabrication is attractive. This review aims to present an overview of advances in hydrogel development from non-woody biomass, especially using native cellulose. The review will cover the overall process from cellulose depolymerization, dissolution to crosslinking reaction and the related mechanisms where known. Hydrogel design is heavily affected by the cellulose solubility, crosslinking method and the related processing conditions apart from biomass type and cellulose purity. Hence, the important parameters for rational designs of hydrogels with desired properties, particularly porosity, transparency and swelling characteristics will be discussed. Current challenges and future perspectives will also be highlighted.

Functionalization of Cellulose-Based Hydrogels with Bi-Functional Fusion Proteins Containing Carbohydrate-Binding Modules. MATERIALS 2021; 14:ma14123175. Abstract
Materials with novel and enhanced functionalities can be obtained by modifying cellulose with a range of biomolecules. This functionalization can deliver tailored cellulose-based materials with enhanced physical and chemical properties and control of biological interactions that match specific applications. One of the foundations for the success of such biomaterials is to efficiently control the capacity to combine relevant biomolecules into cellulose materials in such a way that the desired functionality is attained. In this context, our main goal was to develop bi-functional biomolecular constructs for the precise modification of cellulose hydrogels with bioactive molecules of interest. The main idea was to use biomolecular engineering techniques to generate and purify different recombinant fusions of carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs) with significant biological entities. Specifically, CBM-based fusions were designed to enable the bridging of proteins or oligonucleotides with cellulose hydrogels. The work focused on constructs that combine a family 3 CBM derived from the cellulosomal-scaffolding protein A from Clostridium thermocellum (CBM3) with the following: (i) an N-terminal green fluorescent protein (GFP) domain (GFP-CBM3); (ii) a double Z domain that recognizes IgG antibodies; and (iii) a C-terminal cysteine (CBM3C). The ability of the CBM fusions to bind and/or anchor their counterparts onto the surface of cellulose hydrogels was evaluated with pull-down assays. Capture of GFP-CBM3 by cellulose was first demonstrated qualitatively by fluorescence microscopy. The binding of the fusion proteins, the capture of antibodies (by ZZ-CBM3), and the grafting of an oligonucleotide (to CBM3C) were successfully demonstrated. The bioactive cellulose platform described here enables the precise anchoring of different biomolecules onto cellulose hydrogels and could contribute significatively to the development of advanced medical diagnostic sensors or specialized biomaterials, among others.

Abstract
The current perspective presents an outlook on developing gut-like bioreactors with immobilized probiotic bacteria using cellulose hydrogels. The innovative concept of using hydrogels to simulate the human gut environment by generating and maintaining pH and oxygen gradients in the gut-like bioreactors is discussed. Fundamentally, this approach presents novel methods of production as well as delivery of multiple strains of probiotics using bioreactors. The relevant existing synthesis methods of cellulose hydrogels are discussed for producing porous hydrogels. Harvesting methods of multiple strains are discussed in the context of encapsulation of probiotic bacteria immobilized on cellulose hydrogels. Furthermore, we also discuss recent advances in using cellulose hydrogels for encapsulation of probiotic bacteria. This perspective also highlights the mechanism of probiotic protection by cellulose hydrogels. Such novel gut-like hydrogel bioreactors will have the potential to simulate the human gut ecosystem in the laboratory and stimulate new research on gut microbiota.

Abstract
The supply of affordable drinking and sufficiently clean water for human consumption is one of the world's foremost environmental problems and a large number of scientific research works are addressing this issue Various hazardous/toxic environmental contaminants in water bodies, both inorganic and organic (specifically heavy metals and dyes), have become a serious global problem. Nowadays, extensive efforts have been made to search for novel, cost effective and practical biosorbents derived from biomass resources with special attention to value added, biomass-based renewable materials. Lignin and (nano)material adorned lignin derived entities can proficiently and cost effectively remove organic/inorganic contaminants from aqueous media. As low cost of preparation is crucial for their wide applications in water/wastewater treatment (particularly industrial water), future investigations must be devoted to refining and processing the economic viability of low cost, green lignin-derived (nano)materials. Production of functionalized lignin, lignin supported metal/metal oxide nanocomposites or hydrogels is one of the effective approaches in (nano)technology. This review outlines recent research progresses, trends/challenges and future prospects about lignin-derived (nano)materials and their sustainable applications in wastewater treatment/purification, specifically focusing on adsorption and/or catalytic reduction/(photo)degradation of a variety of pollutants.

Abstract
This study presents a novel type of wet electrode material for electrophysiological monitoring based on a conductive aerogel film. The electrode material incorporates cellulose nanocrystal and fiber as a biocompatible polymer and multi-walled carbon nanotube as a conductive filler. The fabricated electrode is fully characterized to explore the chemical, mechanical, electrical, and water absorption properties. The wet aerogel film presents suitable mechanical flexibility owing to the use of fiber enabling it to be conformal to curved surfaces like human body. The water absorption percentage of the fabricated aerogel film is extremely high (∼500%) due to the porosity of the film and hydrophilicity of the base polymer allowing it for effective wet electrode applications. The film is air dryable with a fast (∼10 min) and facile wetting process granting the electrode application for long-term, multiple use, and remote monitoring of patients. The electrical impedance range of the fabricated aerogel electrodes is relatively low (20 Ω/cm2-370 Ω/cm2) which is within the range of use for various electrophysiological monitoring purposes such as electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG). Overall, the presented study introduces a novel wet electrode based on porous and electrically conductive aerogel film to be used for various biomedical applications.

Abstract
Hybrid cellulose/N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide/graphene oxide (GO) aerogels with high flexibility and underwater oleophobicity were fabricated via the NaOH/urea solvent system. The as-prepared aerogels demonstrated low density, high porosity, and good flexibility. Underwater oleophobicity is attributed to the abundant hydrophilic groups in the aerogel skeleton, rough surface, and homogeneous distribution of GO. The samples were shaped into the membrane and filtered for oil/water separation by gravity. The separation efficiency over membrane-shaped CG1 was 99.8% with a permeate flux of 22,900 L/(m2·h). Moreover, excellent reusability and durability were observed under long-term tests and corrosive conditions.

Abstract
In this work, non-derivatized cellulose pulp was dissolved in a cold alkali solution (LiOH/urea) and chemically cross-linked with methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) to form a robust hydrogel with superior water absorption properties. Different cellulose concentrations (i.e., 2, 3 and 4 wt%) and MBA/glucose molar ratios (i.e., 0.26, 0.53 and 1.05) were tested. The cellulose hydrogel cured at 60 °C for 30 min, with a MBA/glucose molar ratio of 1.05, exhibited the highest water swelling capacity absorbing ca. 220 g H2O/g dry hydrogel. Moreover, the data suggest that the cross-linking occurs via a basic Michael addition mechanism. This innovative procedure based on the direct dissolution of unmodified cellulose in LiOH/urea followed by MBA cross-linking provides a simple and fast approach to prepare chemically cross-linked non-derivatized high-molecular-weight cellulose hydrogels with superior water uptake capacity.

Abstract
The severe preparation process, poor swelling properties and mechanical properties of traditional cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogels heavily limited their practical applications. To solve these issues, we use long-chain hydroxyethyl celluloses (HECs) as framework backbones, short-chain PVAs as branched chains, lignin molecules as extended crosslinkers and epichlorohydrin molecules as crosslinkers to prepare the lignin-based hydroxyethyl cellulose-PVA (LCP) super-absorbent hydrogels in the alkaline aqueous solution under mild reaction conditions, demonstrating high swelling ratio of up to 1220 g/g. The LCP hydrogels could take up large amounts of positively charged dyes rhodamine 6G, crystal violet and methylene blue with uptakes of 153, 184 and 196 mg/g, respectively. The LCP super-absorbent hydrogels also present excellent water retention, biodegradability and excellent swelling properties, which are very promising for applications in the fields of commercial diapers, soil water retention and seed cultivation in agriculture, and dye pollutant removal.

Abstract
This work reported a facile approach to make cellulose-based aerogels in NaOH/urea aqueous solution via freeze-drying hydrogels, which were obtained by mixing N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) with cellulose solution at room temperature. The cellulose solution showed pronounced MBA-induced gelation behaviors. The obtained cellulose aerogels possessed a three dimensional network with macroporous structure (20-600 μm), low density (0.0820-0.0083 g/cm3), high porosity (90.3%-99.02%), moderate thermal stability (275 °C) and certain absorbency to Cu (II) (85 mg/g) and methylene blue (MB) (115 mg/g). Cellulose aerogels with different morphologies can be obtained by adjusting the cross-linking degree and the concentration of cellulose. This kind of aerogel provides an excellent matrix for the functionalization of cellulose-based aerogel.

Grafting polymerization of acrylic acid onto chitosan-cellulose hybrid and application of the graft as highly efficient ligand for elimination of water hardness: Validation of high selectivity in presence of interfering ions. Int J Biol Macromol 2018; 116:530-536. Abstract
Graft Copolymer resulting from polymerization of acrylic acid from chitosan is non-coherent, brittle and exhibit modest swelling in water, which limits its application. Chitosan-cellulose hybrid was initially prepared and novel polymeric ligand ((CTS/Cell)-g-PAA) derived from grafting polymerization of acrylic acid from this hybrid was fabricated and investigated using fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the graft copolymer exhibited high mass transfer under a wide range of pH values due to its elevated hydrophilicity in addition to a good mechanical strength with respect to the comparable graft derived from chitosan as sole backbone for the grafting. The high content of different oxygen and nitrogen-containing groups in a crowded chemical atmosphere along with the high swelling qualified the graft to act as very efficient polymeric ligand with high capacity of removal of metal ions from water under broad conditions. The polymeric ligand performed outstandingly and competitively in the removal of water hardness even in presence of other interfering ions.
