Recent progress in the industrial and biomedical applications of tragacanth gum: A review

Magnetic carboxymethyl gond katira-grafted-poly(3-aminobenzoic acid) as an antibacterial biosorbent for purification of acetamiprid-contaminated water

The elimination of pesticides from polluted water is critical due to their harmful environmental and biological impacts. Recently, there has been interest in utilizing natural polymer-based adsorbents as an eco-friendly approach to eliminate or reduce the levels of water pollutants. In this work, we synthesized an antimicrobial and magnetic bionanocomposite consisting of carboxymethyl gond katira-grafted- poly(3-aminobenzoic acid) with iron oxide and zinc oxide NPs (CMT-g-P3ABA/ZnO/Fe3O4) through an in situ polymerization reaction and examined for its ability to adsorb the pesticide acetamiprid (AP). The bionanocomposite was characterized using several analytical techniques, including spectroscopy; XRD presented the crystalline structure of ZnO/Fe3O4 in the CMT-g-P3ABA amorphous matrix. The ZnO/Fe3O4 partially aggregated formation and exhibited polyhedral crystal shapes was depicted by electron microscopy images, vibrating sample magnetometer (45.06 emu/g), porosimetry (5.52 m2/g), and thermal (Chair yield of approximately 43.83 %) and elemental analyses. Under various conditions, including solution pH (4-9), adsorbent dosage (0.005-0.025 g), time of contact (10-30 min), and pesticide preliminary concentration (200-400 mg/L) in 10 mL of the solution. Based on this research, Adsorption data were perfectly fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model with RAP2= 0.99038, while the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model well-explained adsorption kinetics with RAP2= 0.99847. AP adsorption to the CMT-g-P3ABA/ZnO/Fe3O4 bionanocomposite was successful due to hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking. Furthermore, adsorption-desorption experiments demonstrated that the bionanocomposite could be regenerated after three reuse cycles without considerable loss of pesticide removal performance. The bionanocomposite also exhibited promising antimicrobial activity in contradiction to test bacteria.

Evaluation of new bone formation in critical-sized rat calvarial defect using 3D printed polycaprolactone/tragacanth gum-bioactive glass composite scaffolds

Critical-sized bone defects are a major challenge in reconstructive bone surgery and usually fail to be treated due to limited remaining bone quality and extensive healing time. The combination of 3D-printed scaffolds and bioactive materials is a promising approach for bone tissue regeneration. In this study, 3D-printed alkaline-treated polycaprolactone scaffolds (M-PCL) were fabricated and integrated with tragacanth gum- 45S5 bioactive glass (TG-BG) to treat critical-sized calvarial bone defects in female adult Wistar rats. After a healing period of four and eight weeks, the new bone of blank, M-PCL, and M-PCL/TG-BG groups were harvested and assessed. Micro-computed tomography, histological, biochemical, and biomechanical analyses, gene expression, and bone matrix formation were used to assess bone regeneration. The micro-computed tomography results showed that the M-PCL/TG-BG scaffolds not only induced bone tissue formation within the bone defect but also increased BMD and BV/TV compared to blank and M-PCL groups. According to the histological analysis, there was no evidence of bony union in the calvarial defect regions of blank groups, while in M-PCL/TG-BG groups bony integration and repair were observed. The M-PCL/TG-BG scaffolds promoted the Runx2 and collagen type I expression as compared with blank and M-PCL groups. Besides, the bone regeneration in M-PCL/TG-BG groups correlated with TG-BG incorporation. Moreover, the use of M-PCL/TG-BG scaffolds promoted the biomechanical properties in the bone remodeling process. These data demonstrated that the M-PCL/TG-BG scaffolds serve as a highly promising platform for the development of bone grafts, supporting bone regeneration with bone matrix formation, and osteogenic features. Our results exhibited that the 3D-printed M-PCL/TG-BG scaffolds are a promising strategy for successful bone regeneration.

Plant gums in Pickering emulsions: A review of sources, properties, applications, and future perspectives

Recently, there has been an increasing research interest in the development of Pickering emulsions stabilized with naturally derived biopolymeric particles. In this regard, plant gums, obtained as plant exudates or from plant seeds, are considered promising candidates for the development of non-toxic, biocompatible, biodegradable and eco-friendly Pickering stabilizers. The main objective of this review article is to provide a detailed overview and assess the latest advances in the formulation of Pickering emulsions stabilized with plant gum-based particles. The plant gum sources, types and properties are outlined. Besides, the current methodologies used in the production of plant gum particles formed solely of plant gums, or through interactions of plant gums with proteins or other polysaccharides are highlighted and discussed. Furthermore, the work compiles and assesses the innovative applications of plant gum-based Pickering emulsions in areas such as encapsulation and delivery of drugs and active agents, along with the utilization of these Pickering emulsions in the development of active packaging films, plant-based products and low-fat food formulations. The last part of the review presents potential future research trends that are expected to motivate and direct research to areas related to other novel food applications, as well as tissue engineering and environmental applications.

Agar-tragacanth/silk fibroin hydrogel containing Zn-based MOF as a novel nanobiocomposite with biological activity

In this study, a novel nanobiocomposite consisting of agar (Ag), tragacanth gum (TG), silk fibroin (SF), and MOF-5 was synthesized and extensively investigated by various analytical techniques and basic biological assays for potential biomedical applications. The performed Trypan blue dye exclusion assay indicated that the proliferation percentage of HEK293T cells was 71.19%, while the proliferation of cancer cells (K-562 and MCF-7) was significantly lower, at 10.74% and 3.33%. Furthermore, the Ag-TG hydrogel/SF/MOF-5 nanobiocomposite exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus strains, with growth inhibition rates of 76.08% and 69.19% respectively. Additionally, the hemolytic index of fabricated nanobiocomposite was found approximately 19%. These findings suggest that the nanobiocomposite exhibits significant potential for application in cancer therapy and wound healing.

Tragacanth gum-based copper oxide nanoparticles: Comprehensive characterization, antibiofilm, antimicrobial and photocatalytic potentials

Hereunder, we pioneered the synthesis of Copper Oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) utilizing Tragacanth gum (TG). The NPs were characterized using advanced techniques and assessed for different pharmaceutical and environmental perspectives. The successful formation of a colloidal NPs solution was confirmed by the appearance of a distinct black color and a distinct peak at 260 nm in UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The FTIR analysis unveiled a spectrum of functional groups responsible for the reduction and stabilization of CuO NPs. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed size of NPs as 36.24 nm and 28 ± 04 nm respectively. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Analysis indicated weight percentages of 70.38 % for Cu and 18.88 % for O, with corresponding atomic percentages. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the orthorhombic crystal structure of the prepared CuO NPs. Antimicrobial assessments through disc-diffusion assays demonstrated significant zones of inhibition (ZOI) against gram-positive bacterial strains (Bacillus Halodurans and Micrococcus leutus) and a gram-negative bacterial strain (E. coli). Against the fungal strain Aspergillus niger, a ZOI of 18.5 ± 0.31 mm was observed. The NPs exhibited remarkable antioxidant potential determined through 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and H2O2 scavenging assays. At a concentration of 3 mg/mL, the NPs demonstrated biofilm inhibition rates of 96 %, 90 %, 89.60 %, and 72.10 % against Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus halodurans, MRSA and E.coli respectively. Furthermore, the CuO NPs showed a high photocatalytic potential towards the degradation of safranin dye under sunlight irradiation. In conclusion, the findings underline the promising multifunctional properties of TG-based CuO NPs for different practical applications.

A novel ternary magnetic nanobiocomposite based on tragacanth-silk fibroin hydrogel for hyperthermia and biological properties

This study involves the development of a new nanocomposite material for use in biological applications. The nanocomposite was based on tragacanth hydrogel (TG), which was formed through cross-linking of Ca2+ ions with TG polymer chains. The utilization of TG hydrogel and silk fibroin as natural compounds has enhanced the biocompatibility, biodegradability, adhesion, and cell growth properties of the nanobiocomposite. This advancement makes the nanobiocomposite suitable for various biological applications, including drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering. Additionally, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized in situ within the nanocomposite to enhance its hyperthermia efficiency. The presence of hydrophilic groups in all components of the nanobiocomposite allowed for good dispersion in water, which is an important factor in increasing the effectiveness of hyperthermia cancer therapy. Hemolysis and 3-(4,5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assays were conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the nanobiocomposite for in-vivo applications. Results showed that even at high concentrations, the nanobiocomposite had minimal hemolytic effects. Finally, the hyperthermia application of the hybrid scaffold was evaluated, with a maximum SAR value of 41.2 W/g measured in the first interval.

Shelf-life extension of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) using sodium alginate/chitosan incorporated with cell-free supernatant of Streptococcus thermophilus FUA 329 during cold storage

Seafood is highly perishable and has a short shelf-life. This study investigated the effect of chitosan and alginate (CH-SA) coating combined with the cell-free supernatant of Streptococcus thermophilus FUA329 (CFS) as a preservative on the quailty of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) refrigerated at 4° for 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 days. Freshly shrimps were randomly divided into four groups: the CFS group (400 mL); the CH-SA group (1% chitosan/1% alginate); the CFS-CH-SA group (1% chitosan/1% alginate with 400 mL CFS) are treatment groups, and the control group (400 mL sterile water). The CFS-CH-SA coating effectively suppressed microbial growth total viable count and chemical accumulation (pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance) compared with the control. Additionally, the CFS-CH-SA coating improved the texture and sensory characteristics of shrimp during storage. The coated shrimp exhibited significantly reduced water loss (p < 0.05). The combination of CH-SA coating with CFS treatment can extend the shelf life of shrimp. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Recently, edible films have received more consideration as a promising method to enhance the shelf life of seafood. The presence of Lactic acid bacteria metabolites in edible films reduces spoilage and improves consumer health. Our findings encourage the application of edible coating incorporated with cell-free supernatant of Streptococcus thermophilus FUA 329 to design multifubctional foods and preserve the qualities of shrimp.

Seed gum-based polysaccharides hydrogels for sustainable agriculture: A review

Globally, water scarcity in arid and semiarid regions has become one of the critical issues that hinder sustainable agriculture. Agriculture, being a major water consumer, presents several challenges that affect water availability. Hydrogels derived from polysaccharides seed gums are hydrophilic polymers capable of retaining substantial moisture in their three-dimensional network and releasing it back into the soil during drought conditions. Implementation of hydrogels in the agricultural sectors enhances soil health, plant growth, and crop yield. Furthermore, the soil permeability, density, structure, texture, and rate of evaporation and percolation of water are modified by hydrogel. In this review, hydrogels based on natural plant seed gum like guar, fenugreek, Tara and locust beans have been discussed in terms of their occurrence, properties, chemical structure, method of synthesis, and swelling behavior. The focus extends to recent applications of modified seed gum-based natural hydrogels in agriculture, serving as soil conditioners and facilitating nutrient delivery to growing plants. The swelling behavior and inherent structure of these hydrogels can help researchers unravel their maximum possibilities to promote sustainable agriculture and attenuate the obstacles propounded by our dynamic nature. The current review also examines market growth, prospects, and challenges of eco-friendly hydrogels in recent times.

Exploring polysaccharide-based bio-adhesive topical film as a potential platform for wound dressing application: A review

Wound dressings act as a physical barrier between the wound site and the external environment, preventing additional harm; choosing suitable wound dressings is essential for the healing process. Polysaccharide biopolymers have demonstrated encouraging findings and therapeutic prospects in recent decades about wound therapy. Additionally, polysaccharides have bioactive qualities like anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant capabilities that can help the process of healing. Due to their excellent tissue adhesion, swelling, water absorption, bactericidal, and immune-regulating properties, polysaccharide-based bio-adhesive films have recently been investigated as intriguing alternatives in wound management. These films also mimic the structure of the skin and stimulate the regeneration of the skin. This review presented several design standards and functions of suitable bio-adhesive films for the healing of wounds. Additionally, the most recent developments in the use of bio-adhesive films as wound dressings based on polysaccharides, including hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, dextran, alginate, chitosan, cellulose, konjac glucomannan, gellan gum, xanthan gum, pectin, guar gum, heparin, arabinogalactans, carrageen, and tragacanth gum, are thoroughly discussed. Lastly, to create a road map for the function of polysaccharide-based bio-adhesive films in advanced wound care, their clinical performances and future challenges in making bio-adhesive films by three-dimensional bioprinting are summarized.

Conductive hydrogels based on tragacanth and silk fibroin containing dopamine functionalized carboxyl-capped aniline pentamer: Merging hemostasis, antibacterial, and anti-oxidant properties into a multifunctional hydrogel for burn wound healing

Hydrogels possessing both conductive characteristics and notable antibacterial and antioxidant properties hold considerable significance within the realm of wound healing and recovery. The object of current study is the development of conductive hydrogels with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, emphasizing their potential for effective wound healing, especially in treating third-degree burns. For this purpose, various conductive hydrogels are developed based on tragacanth and silk fibroin, with variable dopamine functionalized carboxyl-capped aniline pentamer (CAP@DA). The FTIR analysis confirms that the CAP powder was successfully synthesized and modified with DA. The results show that the incorporation of CAP@DA into hydrogels can increase the porosity and swellability of the hydrogels. Additionally, the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the hydrogels are also improved. The release of vancomycin from the hydrogels is sustained over time, and the hydrogels are effective in inhibiting the growth of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In vitro cell studies of the hydrogels show that all hydrogels are biocompatible and support cell attachment. The hydrogels' tissue adhesiveness yielded a satisfactory hemostatic outcome in a rat-liver injury model. The third-degree burn was created on the dorsal back paravertebral region of the rats and then grafted with hydrogels. The burn was monitored for 3, 7, and 14 days to evaluate the efficacy of the hydrogel in promoting wound healing. The hydrogels revealed treatment effect, resulting in enhancements in wound closure, dermal collagen matrix production, new blood formation, and anti-inflammatory properties. Better results were obtained for hydrogel with increasing CAP@DA. In summary, the multifunctional conducive hydrogel, featuring potent antibacterial properties, markedly facilitated the wound regeneration process.

Design and fabrication of polysaccharide based excellent chemical resistant and UV barrier ternary blend films for green packaging applications

The development of green materials for active packaging applications is a research hotspot due to setbacks of petrochemical derived plastics. Thus, the present study aims to develop ternary blend films by doping different wt% of Tragacanth gum (TG) to Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Chitosan (PC) blend using solvent evaporation technique. Further, their various physicochemical properties were evaluated systematically. Differential scanning calorimetry studies revealed excellent compatibility and thermal stability of PC blend was significantly reinforced with 15 wt% of TG. UV-visible spectroscopy study demonstrated the excellent shielding efficacy of UV radiation by ternary blend films. Moreover, overall migration results confirmed the limited release of film constituents into food simulants and swelling ratio analysis indicated the good swelling resistance at higher wt% of TG. The ternary films exhibited tremendous chemical resistance against extreme acidic and basic environments and these green biofilms could be considered for active packaging applications.

Preparation and evaluation of smart food packaging films with anthocyanin Sardasht black grape based on Astragalus gummifer and chitosan nanoparticles

A new and green development in the field of food packaging is the use of colorimetric films containing anthocyanins, which not only can respond to food spoilage but also have no environmental risk and help the environment full of unacceptable and polluted substances created by humans. In this research, a completely natural film (GCNG) was made using natural materials including tragacanth gummifer (G), chitosan nanoparticles (C), and an extract containing anthocyanins of a type of wild grape called Sardasht black (G) with Alumina nanoparticles (N) for use in food packaging. This biodegradable film (GCNG) presented relatively wide color differences from red to blue in different buffer solutions (pH 2-12), which was clearly observed by the naked eye. Sardasht black grape extract contains large amounts of anthocyanins and antioxidants that can be extracted and used in the preparation of packaging films. The properties of prepared films, including mechanical properties, permeability to water vapor, solubility, swelling, as well as antimicrobial properties were checked by measuring the diameter of the diffusion area by agar disk test. GCNG films showed strong antioxidant activity and good antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The results suggested this film has promising potential as an active and smart packaging material for applications in the food industry.

An appraisal of the utilization of natural gums as corrosion inhibitors: Prospects, challenges, and future perspectives

Natural gums are macro compounds containing monosaccharide (sugar) units bonded by glycosidic to form long polymeric sugar chains of considerably high molecular weight. Natural gums are multifaceted in applications with the main areas being the food and pharmaceutical industries. The recent research interest in corrosion inhibitors is considering natural gums because of their abundance and ecological compatibility. Hence, this review takes a look at the use of natural gums in pure and modified forms in metals protection. The review establishes that the corrosion-protecting ability of natural gums has a direct connotation with their macromolecular weights, chemical composition, and molecular and electronic structures. Immersion duration and temperature are other factors found to affect the inhibition performance of natural gums considerably. The inhibition of natural gums in pure form is found not to be excellent due to their high hydration rate, algal and microbial contamination, solubility that depends on pH, and thermal instability. Common modification techniques adopted by corrosion inhibitor scientists are copolymerization, mixing with chemicals to induce synergism, crosslinking, and insertion of inorganic nanomaterials into the polymer matrix. Infusion of biosynthesized nanoparticles approach towards enhancing the corrosion inhibition efficiency of natural gums is recommended for future studies because of the unique characteristics of nanoparticles.

Enhancing bone tissue engineering with 3D-Printed polycaprolactone scaffolds integrated with tragacanth gum/bioactive glass

Tissue-engineered bone substitutes, characterized by favorable physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties, present a promising alternative for addressing bone defects. In this study, we employed an innovative 3D host-guest scaffold model, where the host component served as a mechanical support, while the guest component facilitated osteogenic effects. More specifically, we fabricated a triangular porous polycaprolactone framework (host) using advanced 3D printing techniques, and subsequently filled the framework's pores with tragacanth gum-45S5 bioactive glass as the guest component. Comprehensive assessments were conducted to evaluate the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of the designed scaffolds. Remarkably, successful integration of the guest component within the framework was achieved, resulting in enhanced bioactivity and increased strength. Our findings demonstrated that the scaffolds exhibited ion release (Si, Ca, and P), surface apatite formation, and biodegradation. Additionally, in vitro cell culture assays revealed that the scaffolds demonstrated significant improvements in cell viability, proliferation, and attachment. Significantly, the multi-compartment scaffolds exhibited remarkable osteogenic properties, indicated by a substantial increase in the expression of osteopontin, osteocalcin, and matrix deposition. Based on our results, the framework provided robust mechanical support during the new bone formation process, while the guest component matrix created a conducive micro-environment for cellular adhesion, osteogenic functionality, and matrix production. These multi-compartment scaffolds hold great potential as a viable alternative to autografts and offer promising clinical applications for bone defect repair in the future.

ITC study on the interaction of some bile salts with tragacanth, Arabic, and guar gums with potential cholesterol-lowering ability

Introduction

The urge of designing new safe and natural functional foods to control blood lipids and dispensable without the need of physician supervision, has increased especially after the coming into effect of the recent EU Commission regulation 2022/860, that regulates the consumption of "red yeast rice," made by fermentation of rice with Monascus purpureus, and perceived as a natural functional food, due to a health risk for frail consumers. The results of the present work are a part of the systematic study we are carrying out of the binding ability of some soluble dietary fibers (SDF) from different natural sources toward selected bile salts (BS).

Methods

Measurements were carried out by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) with the idea to shed light on the mechanism, if any, by which they show cholesterol-lowering activity.

Results and discussion

Epidemiological studies are sometimes conflicting and offer only hypothesis about the mechanism of action, the most accredited being the reduction of reabsorption of BS in the gut. Previous measurements done on negatively charged pectin and alginate, showed specific binding interaction with monomer NaDC for pectin and no interaction at all for alginate. Chitosan, positively charged and soluble only at low pH, in 100 mM acetate buffer at pH = 3 shows strong exothermic interactions with NaTC and NaTDC. Here we considered two plant exudates (Arabic gum and tragacanth gum) and guar gum, extracted from guar beans, and their interaction with the same bile salts. ITC measurements do not evidence specific interactions between gums and the studied BS, so that their cholesterol lowering ability, if any, is due to a different mechanism very probably bound to the viscosity increase. Moreover, the addition of NaC, the most abundant BS in the bile, at very low concentration (under the cmc) causes a structural change of the solution. The obtained results seem to corroborate the hypothesis that the cholesterol lowering activity is related to the increase in viscosity of guar solution favored by NaC, the major component of the bile.

Fabrication, characterization and antimicrobial activity of chitosan/tragacanth gum/polyvinyl alcohol composite films incorporated with cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsion

The aim of this investigation was to prepare and characterize active composite films made of chitosan (CS), tragacanth gum (TG), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with different concentrations of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) nanoemulsion (CEO, 2 and 4 % v/v). For this purpose, the amount of CS was fixed and the ratio of TG to PVA (90:10, 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40) was considered variable. The physical (thickness and opacity), mechanical, antibacterial and water-resistance properties of the composite films were evaluated. According to the microbial tests, the optimal sample was determined and evaluated with several analytical instruments. CEO loading increased the thickness and EAB of composite films, while decreasing light transmission, tensile strength, and water vapor permeability. All the films containing CEO nanoemulsion had antimicrobial properties, but this activity was higher against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) than Gram-negative types (Escherichia coli (O157:H7) and Salmonella typhimurium). According to the results of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), the interaction between the components of the composite film was confirmed. It can be concluded that the CEO nanoemulsion can be incorporated in CS/TG/PVA composite films and successfully used as active and environmentally friendly packaging.

Sugarcane Bagasse-Derived Cellulose Nanocrystal/Polyvinyl Alcohol/Gum Tragacanth Composite Film Incorporated with Betel Leaf Extract as a Versatile Biomaterial for Wound Dressing

In this study, nanocomposite film was fabricated using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as nanofiller in a polymer matrix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gum tragacanth (GT) via solution casting. CNCs were extracted from sugarcane bagasse using a steam explosion technique followed by acid hydrolysis. Initial analysis of CNCs by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed nanosized particles of 104 nm in length and 7 nm in width. Physical and chemical characteristics of neat PVA, PVA/GT, and PVA/GT/CNC films with varying concentrations of CNCs (from 2% to 10%) were analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, mechanical test, and swelling test. The SEM analysis showed cluster formation of CNCs in the polymer matrix at high concentration. The developed films were transparent. FTIR spectrometry analysis confirmed the chemical functional groups of the various components in the film. The presence of GT and CNCs in the polymer matrix improved the characteristics of films as evident in the prolonged stability for 7 days and increased mechanical properties. The highest elastic modulus of 1526.11 ± 31.86 MPa and tensile strength of 80.39 MPa were recorded in PVA/GT/CNC2 film. The swelling ability, however, decreased from 260% to 230%. Cytotoxicity analysis of the PVA/GT/CNC film showed that it is nontoxic to mouse fibroblast cells L929 with 95% cell viability. Films loaded with betel leaf extract exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus DMST 8840 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa TISTR 781 with 28.20 ± 0.84 mm and 23.60 ± 0.55 mm inhibition zones, respectively. These results demonstrate that PVA/GT/CNC loaded with the betel leaf extract could act as promising and versatile wound dressings to protect the wound surface from infection and dehydration.

Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Tragacanth Gum/Chitosan/Sr-Nano-Hydroxyapatite Composite Membrane

It is a great challenge to obtain an ideal guided bone regeneration (GBR) membrane. In this study, tragacanth gum (GT) was introduced into a chitosan/nano-hydroxyapatite (CS/n-HA) system. The effects of different component ratios and strontium-doped nano-hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) on the physical-chemical properties and degradation behavior of the CS/Sr-n-HA/GT ternary composite membrane were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, electromechanical universal tester and in vitro soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results showed that CS could be ionically crosslinked with GT through electrostatic interaction, and Sr-n-HA was loaded via hydrogen bond, which endowed the GT/CS/n-HA composite membrane with good tensile strength and hydrophilicity. In addition, the results of immersion in SBF in vitro showed that CS/n-HA/GT composite membranes had different degradation rates and good apatite deposition by investigating the changes in pH value, weight loss, water absorption ratio, SEM morphology observation and tensile strength reduction. All results revealed that the CS/Sr-n-HA/GT (6:2:2) ternary composite membrane possessed the strongest ionic crosslinking of GT and CS, which was expected to obtain more satisfactory GBR membranes, and this study will provide new applications of GT in the field of biomedical membranes.

A review on tragacanth gum: A promising natural polysaccharide in drug delivery and cell therapy

Tragacanth is an abundant natural gum extracted from wounds created in some plants and is dried for use in various applications from industry to biomedicines. It is a cost-effective and easily accessible polysaccharide with desirable biocompatibility and biodegradability, drawing much attention for use in new biomedical applications such as wound healing and tissue engineering. Moreover, this anionic polysaccharide with a highly branched structure has been used as an emulsifier and thickening agent in pharmaceutical applications. In the following, this gum has been interested as an appealing biomaterial for producing engineering tools in drug delivery. Furthermore, the biological properties of tragacanth gum have made it a favorable biomaterial in cell therapies, especially for bone tissue engineering. This review aims to discuss the recent studies on this natural gum as a potential carrier for different drugs and cells.

Polysaccharides Are Effective Inhibitors of Natural Gas Hydrate Formation

This review covers the types and applications of chemical inhibitors of gas hydrate formation in the oil and gas industry. The main directions of the development of new types of highly effective and environmentally safe “green” kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) based on biopolymers are analyzed. The structure, physicochemical properties, efficiency of gas hydrate formation inhibition, and commercial prospects of polysaccharides in preventing and controlling the formation of gas hydrates are considered. The criteria for their selection, current experimental data, and the mechanism of inhibition are presented. Recent research in the development of cost-effective, efficient, and biodegradable KHIs for industrial applications in the oil and gas industry is also presented.

A comprehensive review on pharmaceutical uses of plant-derived biopolysaccharides

Biopolysaccharides extracted from plants are mainly photosynthetic byproducts found in leaves, pods, stems, fruits, grains, seeds, corms, rhizomes, roots, bark exudates, and other plant parts. Recently, these plant-derived biopolysaccharides have received a great deal of attention as pharmaceutical excipients in a range of different dosage forms because of several key advantages, such as widespread accessibility from nature as plant-based sources are readily available, sustainable production, availability of easy and cost-effective extraction methodologies, aqueous solubility, swelling capability in the aqueous medium, non-toxicity, biodegradability, etc. The current review presents a comprehensive overview of the uses of plant-derived biopolysaccharides as effective pharmaceutical excipients in the formulations of different kinds of dosage forms, for example gels, pastes, films, emulsions, suspensions, capsules, tablets, nanoparticles, microparticles, beads, buccal formulations, transdermal formulations, ocular formulations, nasal formulations, etc.

Preparation of gum tragacanth/poly (vinyl alcohol)/halloysite hydrogel using electron beam irradiation with potential for bone tissue engineering

Nanocomposite hydrogels based on tyramine conjugated gum tragacanth, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were prepared by electron beam irradiation and characterized. The FTIR, ¹H NMR, and TGA results confirmed the chemical incorporation of HNTs into gum tragacanth. Gel content and swelling of hydrogels decreased with HNTs loading up to 20 % wt. The mechanical strength of hydrogels increased by increasing HNTs content up to 10 % with 371 kPa fracture stress at 0.95 fracture strain, compared to 312 kPa stress at 0.79 strain for gum tragacanth/PVA hydrogel. Hydrogel's biocompatibility and osteogenic activity were tested by seeding rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The cell viability was >85 % after 7 days of culture. In vitro secretion of ALP and calcium deposition on hydrogels in alizarin red assay after 21 days of culture indicated hydrogel potential for bone tissue engineering.

Processing, Characterization and Disintegration Properties of Biopolymers Based on Mater-Bi® and Ellagic Acid/Chitosan Coating

Among the most promising synthetic biopolymers to replace conventional plastics in numerous applications is MaterBi^® (MB), a commercial biodegradable polymer based on modified starch and synthetic polymers. Actually, MB has important commercial applications as it shows interesting mechanical properties, thermal stability, processability and biodegradability. On the other hand, research has also focused on the incorporation of natural, efficient and low-cost active compounds into various materials with the aim of incorporating antimicrobial and/or antioxidant capacities into matrix polymers to extend the shelf life of foods. Among these is ellagic acid (EA), a polyphenolic compound abundant in some fruits, nuts and seeds, but also in agroforestry and industrial residues, which seems to be a promising biomolecule with interesting biological activities, including antioxidant activity, antibacterial activity and UV-barrier properties. The objective of this research is to develop a film based on commercial biopolymer Mater-Bi^® (MB) EF51L, incorporating active coating from chitosan with a natural active compound (EA) at two concentrations (2.5 and 5 wt.%). The formulations obtained complete characterization and were carried out in order to evaluate whether the incorporation of the coating significantly affects thermal, mechanical, structural, water-vapor barrier and disintegration properties. From the results, FTIR analysis yielded identification, through characteristic peaks, that the type of MB used is constituted by three polymers, namely PLA, TPS and PBAT. With respect to the mechanical properties, the values of tensile modulus and tensile strength of the MB-CHI film were between 15 and 23% lower than the values obtained for the MB film. The addition of 2.5 wt.% EA to the CHI layer did not generate changes in the mechanical properties of the system, whereas a 5 wt.% increase in ellagic acid improved the mechanical properties of the CHI film through the addition of natural phenolic compounds at high concentrations. Finally, the disintegration process was mainly affected by the PBAT biopolymer, causing the material to not disintegrate within the times indicated by ISO 20200.

Carbohydrate polymer-based nanocomposites for breast cancer treatment

Breast cancer is known as the most common invasive malignancy in women with the highest mortality rate worldwide. This concerning disease may be presented in situ (relatively easier treatment) or be invasive, especially invasive ductal carcinoma which is highly worrisome nowadays. Among several strategies used in breast cancer treatment, nanotechnology-based targeted therapy is currently being investigated, as it depicts advanced technological features able of preventing drugs' side effects on normal cells while effectively acting on tumor cells. In this context, carbohydrate polymer-based nanocomposites have gained particular interest among the biomedical community for breast cancer therapy applications due to their advantage features, including abundance in nature, biocompatibility, straightforward fabrication methods, and good physicochemical properties. In this review, the physicochemical properties and biological activities of carbohydrate polymers and their derivate nanocomposites were discussed. Then, various methods for the fabrication of carbohydrate polymer-based nanocomposites as well as their application in breast cancer therapy and future perspectives were discussed.

Natural Gums in Drug-Loaded Micro- and Nanogels

Gums are polysaccharide compounds obtained from natural sources, such as plants, algae and bacteria. Because of their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as their ability to swell and their sensitivity to degradation by the colon microbiome, they are regarded as interesting potential drug carriers. In order to obtain properties differing from the original compounds, blends with other polymers and chemical modifications are usually applied. Gums and gum-derived compounds can be applied in the form of macroscopic hydrogels or can be formulated into particulate systems that can deliver the drugs via different administration routes. In this review, we present and summarize the most recent studies regarding micro- and nanoparticles obtained with the use of gums extensively investigated in pharmaceutical technology, their derivatives and blends with other polymers. This review focuses on the most important aspects of micro- and nanoparticulate systems formulation and their application as drug carriers, as well as the challenges related to these formulations.

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels: New insights and futuristic prospects in wound healing

Polysaccharides elicit enormous and promising applications due to their extensive obtainability, innocuousness, and biodegradability. Various outstanding features of polysaccharides can be employed to fabricate biomimetic and multifunctional hydrogels as efficient wound dressings. These hydrogels mimic the natural extracellular matrix and also boost the proliferation of cells. Owing to distinctive architectures and abundance of functional groups, polysaccharide-derived hydrogels have exceptional physicochemical properties and unique therapeutic interventions. Hydrogels designed using polysaccharides can effectively safeguard wounds from bacterial attack. This review includes wound physiology and emphasises on numerous polysaccharide-based hydrogels for wound repair applications. Polysaccharide hydrogels for different wound types and diverse therapeutic agents loaded in hydrogels for wound repair with recent patents are portrayed in the current manuscript, debating the potential of fascinating hydrogels for effective wound healing. More research is required to engineer multifaceted advanced polysaccharide hydrogels with tuneable and adjustable properties to attain huge potential in wound healing.

Natural Gum-Based Functional Bioactive Films and Coatings: A Review

Edible films and coatings are a current and future food packaging trend. In the food and envi-ronmental sectors, there is a growing need to understand the role of edible packaging and sus-tainability. Gums are polysaccharides of natural origin that are frequently utilized as thickeners, clarifying agents, gelling agents, emulsifiers, and stabilizers in the food sector. Gums come in a variety of forms, including seed gums, mucilage gums, exudate gums, and so on. As a biodegradable and sustainable alternative to petrochemical-based film and coatings, gums could be a promising option. Natural plant gum-based edible packaging helps to ensure extension of shelf-life of fresh and processed foods while also reducing microbiological alteration and/or oxidation processes. In this review, the possible applications of gum-based polymers and their functional properties in development of edible films and coatings, were comprehensively dis-cussed. In the future, technology for developing natural gum-based edible films and coatings might be applied commercially to improve shelf life and preserve the quality of foods.

Magnetic-responsive polysaccharide hydrogels as smart biomaterials: Synthesis, properties, and biomedical applications

This review reports recent advances in polysaccharide-based magnetic hydrogels as smart platforms for different biomedical applications. These hydrogels have proved to be excellent, viable, eco-friendly alternative materials for the biomedical field due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and possibility of controlling delivery processes via modulation of the remote magnetic field. We first present their main synthesis methods and compare their advantages and disadvantages. Next, the synergic properties of hydrogels prepared with polysaccharides and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are discussed. Finally, we describe the main contributions of polysaccharide-based magnetic hydrogels in the targeted drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and hyperthermia therapy fields. Overall, this review aims to motivate the synthesis of novel composite biomaterials, based on the combination of magnetic nanoparticles and natural polysaccharides, to overcome challenges that still exist in the treatment of several diseases.

Metal-organic framework-based materials for the abatement of air pollution and decontamination of wastewater

Developing new and efficient technologies for environmental remediation is becoming significant due to the increase in global concerns such as climate change, severe epidemics, and energy crises. Air pollution, primarily due to increased levels of H₂S, SO_x, NH₃, NO_x, CO, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, has a significant impact on public health, and exhaust gases harm the natural sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon cycles. Similarly, wastewater discharged to the environment with metal ions, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, dyes, and aromatics/organic compounds is a risk for health since it may lead to an outbreak of waterborne pathogens and increase the exposure to endocrine-disrupting agents. Therefore, developing new and efficient air and water quality management systems is critical. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel materials for which the main application areas include gas storage and separation, water harvesting from the atmosphere, chemical sensing, power storage, drug delivery, and food preservation. Due to their versatile structural motifs that can be modified during synthesis, MOFs also have a great promise for green applications including air and water pollution remediation. The motivation to use MOFs for environmental applications prompted the modification of their structures via the addition of metal and functional groups, as well as the creation of heterostructures by mixing MOFs with other nanomaterials, to effectively remove hazardous contaminants from wastewater and the atmosphere. In this review, we focus on the state-of-the-art environmental applications of MOFs, particularly for water treatment and air pollution, by highlighting the groundbreaking studies in which MOFs have been used as adsorbents, membranes, and photocatalysts for the abatement of air and water pollution. We finally address the opportunities and challenges for the environmental applications of MOFs.

Facile synthesis of biogenic silica nanomaterial loaded transparent tragacanth gum hydrogels with improved physicochemical properties and inherent anti-bacterial activity

In this report, biogenic, crystalline (∼60.5 ± 2%) bowknot structured silica nanoparticles (BSNPs) of length ∼ 274 ± 7 nm and width ∼ 36 ± 2 nm were isolated from invasive species viz. Lantana camara. These were then chemically modified using nitrogen containing moieties viz. APTES and CTAB. These modified BSNPs were then used as electrostatic cross-linking agents for the formation of tragacanth gum (TG) hydrogels. The cytocompatible CTAB@BSNP-TG hydrogels documented ∼10-12 fold enhancement in anti-bacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa when compared with TG hydrogels. Disruption of the bacterial membrane by ROS generation and protein leakage were responsible for anti-bacterial activity. A cell migration assay suggested that CTAB@BSNP-TG augmented the cell proliferation of NIH-3T3 cells compared to other TG hydrogels. The present study will pave the path for the development of organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite-based hydrogels for anti-bacterial and cell migration applications.

Natural Plant Extracts: An Update about Novel Spraying as an Alternative of Chemical Pesticides to Extend the Postharvest Shelf Life of Fruits and Vegetables

Fresh fruits and vegetables, being the source of important vitamins, minerals, and other plant chemicals, are of boundless importance these days. Although in agriculture, the green revolution was a milestone, it was accompanied by the intensive utilization of chemical pesticides. However, chemical pesticides have hazardous effects on human health and the environment. Therefore, increasingly stimulating toward more eco-friendly and safer alternatives to prevent postharvest losses and lead to improving the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables. Proposed alternatives, natural plant extracts, are very promising due to their high efficacy. The plant-based extract is from a natural source and has no or few health concerns. Many researchers have elaborated on the harmful effects of synthetic chemicals on human life. People are now much more aware of safety and health concerns than ever before. In the present review, we discussed the latest research on natural alternatives for chemical synthetic pesticides. Considering that the use of plant-based extracts from aloe vera, lemongrass, or neem is non-chemical by-products of the fruits and vegetable industry, they are proved safe for human health and may be integrated with economic strategies. Such natural plant extracts can be a good alternative to chemical pesticides and preservatives.

Biological activity of multicomponent bio-hydrogels loaded with tragacanth gum

Producing hydrogels capable of mimicking the biomechanics of soft tissue remains a challenge. We explore the potential of plant-based hydrogels as polysaccharide tragacanth gum and antioxidant lignin nanoparticles in bioactive multicomponent hydrogels for tissue engineering. These natural components are combined with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils, a material with known shear thinning behavior. Hydrogels presented tragacanth gum (TG) concentration-dependent rheological properties suitable for extrusion 3D printing. TG enhanced the swelling capacity up to 645 % and the degradation rate up to 1.3 %/day for hydrogels containing 75 % of TG. Young's moduli of the hydrogels varied from 5.0 to 11.6 kPa and were comparable to soft tissues like skin and muscle. In vitro cell viability assays revealed that the scaffolds were non-toxic and promoted proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. Therefore, the plant-based hydrogels designed in this work have a significant potential for tissue engineering.

A review on challenges and issues with carboxymethylation of natural gums: The widely used excipients for conventional and novel dosage forms

Diverse properties of natural gums have made them quite useful for various pharmaceutical applications. However, they suffer from various problems, including unregulated hydration rates, microbial degradation, and decline in viscosity during warehousing. Among various chemical procedures for modification of gums, carboxymethylation has been widely studied due to its simplicity and efficiency. Despite the availability of numerous research articles on natural gums and their uses, a comprehensive review on carboxymethylation of natural gums and their applications in the pharmaceutical and other biomedical fields is not published until now. This review outlines the classification of gums and their derivatization methods. Further, we have discussed various techniques of carboxymethylation, process of determination of degree of substitution, and functionalization pattern of substituted gums. Detailed information about the application of carboxymethyl gums as drug delivery carriers has been described. The article also gives a brief account on tissue engineering and cell delivery potential of carboxymethylated gums.

Fabrication of Biohybrid Nanofibers by the Green Electrospinning Technique and Their Antibacterial Activity

The development of bioactive polymer nanofiber sheets based on eco-friendly components is required to meet the needs of various medical applications as well as to preserve the environment. This study aimed to fabricate biohybrid nanofibers based on water-soluble polymers and aqueous extract of myrrh. The myrrh extract was incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol)/tragacanth gum nanofiber mats (myrrh@PVA/TG) by the green electrospinning technique. Various characteristics of the prepared fibers such as morphology, fiber diameter distribution, crystallinity, and thermal stability were studied. The results confirmed that the morphology of biohybrid nanofibers was uniform without beads and tragacanth gum plays an important role in controlling the average diameter of fibers and the crystallinity. The antibacterial properties of the developed biohybrid nanofibers were investigated against common pathogens of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by the standard disc diffusion method. A significant antibacterial activity was observed toward bacterial strains after incorporation of aqueous myrrh extract into nanofibers, which increased on increasing the extract ratio. Due to their eco-friendly components and significant antibacterial activity, the prepared biohybrid nanofibers will open new avenues toward incorporating aqueous herbal extracts into degradable polymer fibers for use in many antibacterial applications.

Polysaccharide hydrogels: Functionalization, construction and served as scaffold for tissue engineering

Polysaccharide hydrogels have been widely utilized in tissue engineering. They interact with the organismal environments, modulating the cargos release and realizing of long-term survival and activations of living cells. In this review, the potential strategies for modification of polysaccharides were introduced firstly. It is not only used to functionalize the polysaccharides for the consequent formation of hydrogels, but also used to introduce versatile side groups for the regulation of cell behavior. Then, techniques and underlying mechanisms in inducing the formation of hydrogels by polysaccharides or their derivatives are briefly summarized. Finally, the applications of polysaccharide hydrogels in vivo, mainly focus on the performance for alleviation of foreign-body response (FBR) and as cell scaffolds for tissue regeneration, are exemplified. In addition, the perspectives and challenges for further research are addressed. It aims to provide a comprehensive framework about the potentials and challenges that the polysaccharide hydrogels confronting in tissue engineering.

Synthesis and Optimization of Deesterified Acacia-Alginate Nanohydrogel for Amethopterin Delivery

Naturally obtained materials are preferable for the production of biomedicine in biomedical applications. Acacia gum is has recently become a hopeful one in the biomedicine production due to its excellent properties, namely, emulsifier, stabilizing mediator, suspending agent, etc. In this novel work, we synthesised and characterized the deesterified Acacia gum-alginate nanohydrogel (DEA-AG NPs) as a carrier for amethopterin (ATN) delivery. This combination is used in the drug effectiveness and tissue engineering. In this work, the Taguchi route is implemented for estimating of particle size and zeta potential (mV) through optimization. Following three parameters are considered for this work: DEA solution concentration (0.008, 0.016, 0.024, and 0.032 w/v %), alginate molecular weight (3, 6, 9, and 12 MW), and ATN/DEA ratio (1 : 4, 1 : 8, 1 : 12, and 1 : 16 w/w %). In particle size analysis and zeta potential analysis, the DEA solution concentration is highly influenced. Minimum particle size is found as 148.50 nm. Similarly, maximum zeta potential is identified as 29.5 mV.

Effect of Gum Tragacanth-Sodium Alginate Active Coatings Incorporated With Epigallocatechin Gallate and Lysozyme on the Quality of Large Yellow Croaker at Superchilling Condition

This research was done to investigate the synergistic interactions of the gum tragacanth (GT)–sodium alginate (SA) active coatings, incorporated with epigallocatechin gallate and lysozyme, on the quality of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) during superchilling storage at −3°C. Results showed that the GT-SA active coatings, containing epigallocatechin gallate [EGCG (E), 0.32% w/v], and lysozyme [LYS (L), 0.32% w/v] have reduced the total viable count, psychrophilic bacteria, and Pseudomonas spp. by about 1.55 log CFU/g, 0.49 log CFU/g, and 1.64 log CFU/g compared to the control at day 35. The GT-SA active coatings containing EGCG and LYS were effective in lowering the formations of off-odor compounds such as total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), malondialdehyde (MDA), and off-favor amino acid (histidine). The solid phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (SPME-GC/MS) was applied to characterize and to quantify the volatile compounds of large yellow croaker samples during superchilling storage, while the relative content of the fishy flavor compounds (including 1-octen-3-ol and acetoin) was significantly reduced in the active coatings treated samples. Furthermore, the GT-SA active coatings containing EGCG and LYS treatments was found to be more effective in retarding the migration of water based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results and in maintaining the organoleptic quality of large yellow croaker in superchilling storage at −3°C according to the sensory evaluation results. The results showed that the GT-SA active coating containing EGCG and LYS was effective to be used as a fish preservative to improve the quality and to prolong the shelf life of large yellow croaker in a superchilling storage for at least 7 days.

Gums-based engineered bio-nanostructures for greening the 21st-century biotechnological settings

Naturally occurring plant-based gums and their engineered bio-nanostructures have gained an immense essence of excellence in several industrial, biotechnological, and biomedical sectors of the modern world. Gums derived from bio-renewable resources that follow green chemistry principles are considered green macromolecules with unique structural and functional attributes. For instance, gum mostly obtained as exudates are bio-renewable, bio-degradable, bio-compatible, sustainable, overall cost-effective, and nontoxic. Gum exudates also offer tunable attributes that play a crucial role in engineering bio-nanostructures of interest for several bio- and non-bio applications, e.g., food-related items, therapeutic molecules, sustained and controlled delivery cues, bio-sensing constructs, and so on. With particular reference to plant gum exudates, this review focuses on applied perspectives of various gums, i.e., gum Arabic, gum albizzia, gum karaya, gum tragacanth, and gum kondagogu. After a brief introduction with problem statement and opportunities, structural and physicochemical attributes of plant-based natural gums are presented. Following that, considerable stress is given to green synthesis and stabilization of gum-based bio-nanostructures. The final part of the review focuses on the bio- and non-bio related applications of various types of gums polysaccharides-oriented bio-nanostructures.
