Abstract
The dyes in printing and dyeing wastewater are harmful to the human body and the environment. It is essential to develop practical and effective adsorbents to deal with them. In this study, an Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived Fe/Co/C composite material with strong magnetism was successfully synthesized. The effects of pH, initial concentration, and adsorption time on the properties of the adsorbent were investigated. To further improve the removal efficiency and enhance the practicality, potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was added to the system due to its Fenton-like effect. Then, an Fe/Co/C composite was used with PMS to remove Congo red (CR) with a 98% removal of 250 mg·L-1. Moreover, for its high saturation magnetization of 85.4 emu·g-1, the Fe/Co/C composite can be easily recovered by applying a magnetic field, solving the problem that powdery functional materials are difficult to recover and, thus, avoiding secondary pollution. Furthermore, since the composite material was doped before carbonization, this synthetic strategy is flexible and the required metal elements can be added at will to achieve different purposes. This study demonstrates that this Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived magnetic material has potential application prospects for dye adsorption.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Abstract
In this work, chitosan-grafted-poly(acrylic acid) (CS-g-PAA) was synthesized for use as a Co2+ adsorbent and circularly utilized as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye. CS-g-PAA demonstrated 3.7 times higher adsorption capacity toward Co2+ than pristine chitosan. The impact of the adsorption conditions was evaluated. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model best described the adsorption process. Under optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity of CS-g-PAA for Co2+ was 212 mg/g. The Co2+-adsorbed CS-g-PAA hydrogel was further utilized in the RhB degradation process. The effects of catalyst dosage, initial RhB concentration, pH, and the coexistence of anions on the degradation of RhB were studied. The hydrogel catalyst could remove 98 % of RhB within 5 min, at a degradation rate of 0.624 per min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and the radical scavenger experiment suggested that SO4•-, HO•, 1O2, and O2•- were involved in the degradation. Furthermore, when tested in various water systems, high degradation efficiencies of 98 % were attained after 20 min. The hydrogel catalyst performed excellent degradation over ten cycles without any chemical recovery processes. Moreover, high degradation efficiencies were observed between 95 % and 98 % when tested with other dyes.

Abstract
Chitosan is a modified natural carbohydrate polymer that has been found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans (e.g., lobsters, shrimps, krill, barnacles, crayfish, etc.), mollusks (octopus, oysters, squids, snails), algae (diatoms, brown algae, green algae), insects (silkworms, beetles, scorpions), and the cell walls of fungi (such as Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Phycomycetes; for example, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum). However, it is mostly acquired from marine crustaceans such as shrimp shells. Chitosan-based composites often present superior chemical, physical, and mechanical properties compared to single chitosan by incorporating the benefits of both counterparts in the nanocomposites. The tunable surface chemistry, abundant surface-active sites, facilitation synthesize and functionalization, good recyclability, and economic viability make the chitosan-based materials potential adsorbents for effective and fast removal of a broad range of inorganic anions. This article reviews the different types of inorganic anions and their effects on the environment and human health. The development of the chitosan-based composites synthesis, the various parameters like initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, the mechanism of adsorption, and regeneration of adsorbents are discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects and technical challenges are emphasized to improve the performance of chitosan-based composites in actual applications on a pilot or industrial scale.

Abstract
Multilayer intelligent freshness labels based on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and anthocyanins doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (A-ZIF-8) nanocrystals were developed in this study. First, optical, structural, thermal, and surface characterizations of A-ZIF-8 nanocrystals were performed, and the successful incorporation of anthocyanins into ZIF-8 nanocrystals was demonstrated. Next, A-ZIF-8 was added into PVA, and multilayer films were fabricated by spin-coating PVA/A-ZIF-8 layers onto BNC. The effect of the number of deposition cycles on the barrier, mechanical, thermal, morphological, and colorimetric properties of multilayer labels was investigated. The ammonia sensing, mechanical, and barrier properties of the films were shown to be tuned by the number of the PVA/A-ZIF-8 layers on the BNC. Among the developed films, BNC-2PVA/A-ZIF-8 films with the best colorimetric sensitivity toward volatile ammonia were used to monitor the freshness of skinless chicken breasts. The changes in the ΔE and a* values of BNC-2PVA/A-ZIF-8 film demonstrated a good correlation with the microbial and TVB-N levels in samples over 10 days of storage at 4 °C.

Abstract
Mediated by polydopamine, MoS2 nanosheets were immobilized on the porous biochar derived from fungus residue, forming a novel biochar-based nanocomposite (MoS2-PDA@FRC) for the removal of Rhodamine B(RhB) and Pb(II) from water. Utilizing MoS2 nanosheets with abundant active adsorption sites, MoS2-PDA@FRC showed higher adsorption capacities than raw biochar, with 2.76 and 1.78 times higher capacities for RhB and Pb(II) respectively. MoS2-PDA@FRC also exhibited fast adsorption kinetics for RhB (120 min) and Pb (180 min) removal, as well as satisfactory adsorption selectivity in the presence of coexisting substances. The underlying removal mechanism was explored via Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Furthermore, during cyclic adsorption-regeneration and the fixed-bed adsorption experiments, the nanocomposite removed RhB and Pb(II) with high effectiveness and stability. Collectively, the results demonstrated the bright prospects of MoS2-PDA@FRC as a highly efficient decontamination agent of RhB and Pb(II) from water.

Abstract
The presence of hazardous pollutants in water sources as a result of industrial activities is a major environmental challenge that impedes the availability of safe drinking water. Adsorptive and photocatalytic degradative removal of various pollutants in wastewater have been recognized as cost-effective and energy-efficient strategies. In addition to its biological activity, chitosan and its derivatives are considered as promising materials for the removal of various pollutants. The abundance of hydroxyl and amino groups in the chitosan macromolecular structure results in a variety of concurrent pollutant's adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, adding chitosan to photocatalysts increases the mass transfer while decreasing both the band gap energy and the amount of intermediates produced during photocatalytic processes, improving the overall photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we have reviewed the current design and preparation of chitosan and its composites, as well as their applications for the removal of various pollutants by adsorption and photocatalysis processes. Effects of operating variables such as the pH, catalyst mass, contact time, light wavelength, initial pollutant's concentration, and catalyst recyclability, are discussed. Various kinetic and isotherm models are presented to elucidate the rates, and mechanisms of pollutant's removal, onto chitosan-based composites, and several case studies are presented. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of chitosan-based composites has been discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the applications of chitosan-based composites in wastewater treatment and put forward new insights for the development of highly effective chitosan-based adsorbents and photocatalysts. Finally, the main challenges and future directions in the field are discussed.

Abstract
In this work, various amounts of the UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2/TiO2 MOFs have been loaded into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers supported on polyethersulfone (PES). The visible light irradiation was used to investigate the influence of pH (2-10), initial concentration (10-500 mg L-1), and time (5-240 min) on the removal efficiency of phenol and Cr(vi) in the presence of MOFs. The reaction time: 120 min, catalyst dosage: 0.5 g L-1, pH: 2 for Cr(vi) ions and pH: 3 for phenol molecules were optimum to degrade phenol and to reduce Cr(vi) ions. The characterization of the produced samples was performed using X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The capability of synthesized photocatalytic membranes was investigated for the removal of phenol and Cr(vi) ions from water. The water flux, Cr(vi) and phenol solutions fluxes and their rejection percentages were evaluated under pressure of 2 bar in the presence of visible light irradiation and in the dark. The best performance of the synthesized nanofibers was obtained for UiO-66-NH2/TiO2 MOF 5 wt% loaded-PES/PAN nanofibrous membranes at temperature of 25 °C and pH of 3. Results demonstrated the high capability of MOFs-loaded nanofibrous membranes for the removal of various contaminants such as Cr(vi) ions and phenol molecules from water.

Abstract
MOF@Biomass layered hybrids were designed through in situ growth from rice husk (RH) and microwave-assisted synthesized MIL-53(Al) particles that enable the reduction of reaction times. The synthesis process included steps to pretreat RH, Al adsorption on RH, and then MIL-53(Al) in-situ growth reaction at 125 °C for 60 min and 200 W irradiation power. The resulting hybrid (MIL-53(Al)@RH) and its parent separate materials were characterized using TGA, SEM, FTIR, XRD, among others. MIL-53(Al)@RH showed high crystallinity in the hybridized MOF particles, thermal decomposition phases, and functional groups (Al-O, O-H, CO, and CC). The hybrid particles allow an easy separation during heterogeneous processing due to their 400 times larger size compared to MIL-53(Al) crystals. The properties of the layered hybrids for removal of Oxytetracycline (OTC), Diclofenac (DCL), and Glyphosate (GLY) in aqueous solutions, were tested by adsorption (ADS) and advanced oxidation processes (AOP). The high ADS capacities (162 mg g-1 GLY, 139 mg g-1 OTC, 93 mg g-1 DCL) and % removal in AOP (97% GLY, 91% OTC, 80% DCL) demonstrated that MIL-53(Al) maintained its properties after hybridization.

Abstract
This contribution aims to demonstrate the scope of new hybrids between biomass and metal-organic frameworks (MOF@biomass) used in the adsorption process of pollutants. After a brief presentation of the use of the main series of MOFs as efficient adsorbents for different types of pollutants, the limitations of these structures related to particle size and hydrodynamic problems during their application are highlighted. Lignocellulosic biomasses are also recognized as an alternative adsorbent, mainly due to their high natural abundance and their low environmental impact during and after their application. The limited capacity of bioadsorbents becomes important in this research. Consequently, the largest amount of information existing in the last ten years on MOF-Biomass functionalization as a hybrid and improvement technology for adsorption processes is compiled, analyzed, compared and contrasted. So far, there is no evidence of works that exploit the concept of functionalization of adsorbents of different nature to give rise to new hybrid materials. Through this review it was found that the hybrids obtained show a higher adsorption capacity (Qe) compared to their precursors, due to the increase of organic functional groups provided by the biomass. Thus, for heavy metals, dyes, Arsenium anions and other organic and pharmaceutical compounds, there are increases in Qe of about 100 mg g-1. The possibility of the new hybrid being studied for desorption and reuse processes is also raised, resulting in a new line of research that is attractive for the industry from an economic and environmental point of view. The functionalization methods and techniques used in the studies cited in this article are outlined. In conclusion, this research brings a new horizon of study in the field of adsorption and mentions the main future challenges related to new sustainable applications.

Abstract
A photolysis method was used to prepare a nanocomposite adsorbent (Chitosan-TiO2) and was tested for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The produce nanocomposite was investigated using, XRD, BET, FTIR, FESEM-EDX and TEM before and after Cr(VI) adsorption. The XRD results shows prepared anatase phase of TiO2 with 12 nm. According to BET measurements, the surface area of the TiO2/chitosan nanocomposite was lower and archived to 26 m2/g, while the TEM and FESEM images show a uniform distribution of TiO2 throughout the chitosan matrix. Adsorption and kinetic experiments were run in batch system under different conditions of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature. Experimental Cr(VI) adsorption equilibrium and kinetics data fitted well to Langmuir model. The calculated Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) value of nanocomposite was 488 mg/g. Moreover, the highest quantity of Cr(VI) uptake was achieved of pH = 2 and 45℃ and TiO2 and CS-TiO2 had respective removal efficiencies of 94 and 87.5%. The thermodynamic parameters of Cr(VI) adsorption by nanocomposite affirm the spontaneous and endothermic nature of process. Chromium adsorption mechanism by CS-TiO2 nanocomposite were proposed and discussed.

Abstract
Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are attracting significant attention for applications including adsorption, chemical sensing, gas separation, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and catalysis. In particular, zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8), which is composed of zinc ions and imidazolate ligands, have been applied in different areas of catalysis due to its outstanding structural and textural properties. It possesses a highly porous structure and chemical and thermal stability under varying reaction conditions. When used alone in the reaction medium, the ZIF-8 particles tend to agglomerate, which inhibits their removal efficiency and selectivity. This results in their mediocre reusability and separation from aqueous conditions. Thus, to overcome these drawbacks, several well-designed ZIF-8 structures have emerged by forming composites and heterostructures and doping. This review focuses on the recent advances on the use of ZIF-8 structures (doping, composites, heterostructures, etc.) in the removal and photodegradation of persistent organic pollutants. We focus on the adsorption and photocatalysis of three main organic pollutants (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green). Finally, the key challenges, prospects and future directions are outlined to give insights into game-changing breakthroughs in this area.

Abstract
Mass loading of functional particles on the surface of nanofibers is the key to efficient heavy metal treatment. However, it is still difficult to prepare nanofibers with a large number of functional particle loads on the surface simply and efficiently, which hinders the further improvement of performance and increases the cost. Here, a new one-step strategy was developed to maximize the adhesion of graphene oxide (GO) particle to the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers, which was combined with coaxial surface modification technology and blended electrospinning. The oxygen content on the as-prepared fiber surface increased from 0.44% to 9.32%, showing the maximized GO load. The increased adsorption sites and improved hydrophilicity greatly promoted the adsorption effect of Cr(VI). The adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) was 271 mg/g, and 99% removal rate could be achieved within 2 h for 20 mL Cr(VI) (100 mg/L), which was highly efficient. After five adsorption-desorption tests, the adsorption removal efficiency of the Cr(VI) maintained more than 80%, exhibiting excellent recycling performance. This simple method achieved maximum loading of functional particles on the fiber surface, realizing the efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions, which may promote the development of heavy-metal-polluted water treatment.

Abstract
In this study, a method for the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on carboxymethyl chitosan beads (BCMC) to produce a composite adsorbent (BCMC@ZIF-8) for the removal of Pb2+ from water is proposed. The results revealed that the utilization of the BCMC as a framework enhanced the stability of ZIF-8, and the presence of the latter in the composite improved the removal efficiency of Pb2+ from water. Data from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and adsorption kinetics revealed that the adsorption mechanism included diffusion and the sharing/transfer of electrons between BCMC@ZIF-8 and Pb2+. The maximum adsorption capacity of BCMC@ZIF-8 fitted using the Langmuir model was 566.09 mg/g. Results of the experiments on the regeneration of the adsorbent and its stability in water further indicated that BCMC improved the stability of ZIF-8. This study demonstrated that the stability of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, which exhibited high efficiencies for the removal of heavy metals in water can be improved through fixation of the polymer skeleton. Thus, the present study offers practical and theoretical guidance for the application of MOF materials in water treatment.

Abstract
Recently, nanofibers have come to be considered one of the sustainable routes with enormous applicability in different fields, such as wastewater treatment. Electrospun nanofibers can be fabricated from various materials, such as synthetic and natural polymers, and contribute to the synthesis of novel nanomaterials and nanocomposites. Therefore, they have promising properties, such as an interconnected porous structure, light weight, high porosity, and large surface area, and are easily modified with other polymeric materials or nanomaterials to enhance their suitability for specific applications. As such, this review surveys recent progress made in the use of electrospun nanofibers to purify polluted water, wherein the distinctive characteristics of this type of nanofiber are essential when using them to remove organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater, as well as for oil/water (O/W) separation.

Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive literature review surveying the most important polymer materials used for electrospinning processes and applied as membranes for the removal of emerging pollutants. Two types of processes integrate these membrane types: separation processes, where electrospun polymers act as a support for thin film composites (TFC), and adsorption as single or coupled processes (photo-catalysis, advanced oxidation, electrochemical), where a functionalization step is essential for the electrospun polymer to improve its properties. Emerging pollutants (EPs) released in the environment can be efficiently removed from water systems using electrospun membranes. The relevant results regarding removal efficiency, adsorption capacity, and the size and porosity of the membranes and fibers used for different EPs are described in detail.

Abstract
Because the pollutants produced by human activities have destroyed the ecological balance of natural water environment, and caused severe impact on human life safety and environmental security. Hence the task of water environment restoration is imminent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structured from organic ligands and inorganic metal ions, are notable for their outstanding crystallinity, diverse structures, large surface areas, adsorption performance, and excellent component tunability. The water stability of MOFs is a key requisite for their possible actual applications in separation, catalysis, adsorption, and other water environment remediation areas because it is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the material structure during utilization. In this article, we comprehensively review state-of-the-art research progress on the promising potential of MOFs as excellent nanomaterials to remove contaminants from the water environment. Firstly, the fundamental characteristics and preparation methods of several typical water-stable MOFs include UiO, MIL, and ZIF are introduced. Then, the removal property and mechanism of heavy metal ions, radionuclide contaminants, drugs, and organic dyes by different MOFs were compared. Finally, the application prospect of MOFs in pollutant remediation prospected. In this review, the synthesis methods and application in water pollutant removal are explored, which provide ways toward the effective use of water-stable MOFs in materials design and environmental remediation.

Abstract
Microgels can be considered soft, porous and deformable particles with an internal gel structure swollen by a solvent and an average size between 100 and 1000 nm. Due to their biocompatibility, colloidal stability, their unique dynamicity and the permeability of their architecture, they are emerging as important candidates for drug delivery systems, sensing and biocatalysis. In clinical applications, the research on responsive microgels is aimed at the development of "smart" delivery systems that undergo a critical change in conformation and size in reaction to a change in environmental conditions (temperature, magnetic fields, pH, concentration gradient). Recent achievements in biodegradable polymer fabrication have resulted in new appealing strategies, including the combination of synthetic and natural-origin polymers with inorganic nanoparticles, as well as the possibility of controlling drug release remotely. In this review, we provide a literature review on the use of dual and multi-responsive chitosan-grafted-poly-(N-vinylcaprolactam) (CP) microgels in drug delivery and oncological applications.

Abstract
Stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions can produce at many industrial production occasions. However, most materials for its separation have serious fouling problems. To overcome this shortcoming, we fabricated an easy cleaning multifunctional starch-based material with unique wetting behavior which could realize efficient separation and purification of W/O emulsions. This material has a hierarchical structure and superoleophilic and under oil superhydrophobic surfaces which could separate various W/O emulsions in a high separation efficiency and flux without external pressure. In addition, the decrease of separation flux was not observed for this material, which can be reused more than 10 times after washing with ethanol and drying after each separation cycle. Furthermore, this material also could realize efficient removal of dyes and heavy-metal and rare-earth ions simultaneously during a separation process. The material shows great potential for separating and purifying stable W/O emulsions produced during the industrial production.

Abstract
Optimizing the physicochemical properties of the chitosan-based activated carbon (Ch-ACs) can greatly enhance its performance toward heavy metal removal from contaminated water. Herein, Ch was converted into a high surface area (1556 m2/g) and porous (0.69 cm3/g) ACs with large content of nitrogen (~16 wt%) using K2CO3 activator and urea as nitrogen-enrichment agents. The prepared Ch-ACs were tested for the removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) at different pH, initial metal ions concentration, time, activated carbon dosage, and temperature. For Cr(VI), the best removal was at pH = 2, while for Pb(II) the best pH for its removal was in the range of 4-6. At 25 °C, the Temkin model gives the best fit for the adsorption of Cr(VI), while the Langmuir model was found to be better for Pb(II) ions. The kinetics of adsorption of both heavy metal ions were found to be well-fitted by a pseudo-second-order model. The findings show that the efficiency and the green properties (availability, recyclability, and cost effectiveness) of the developed adsorbent made it a good candidate for wastewaters treatment. As preliminary work, the prepared sorbent was also tested regarding the removal of heavy metals and other contaminations from real wastewater and the obtained results were found to be promising.

Abstract
A novel magnetic nanocomposite of chitosan-grafted-poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (Fe3O4/SiO2/CHT-g-PNVCL MNC) were synthesized. Chitosan was prepared from shrimp shells Penaeus monodon by a green deacetylation approach. N-vinylcaprolactam was first polymerized on the surface of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Then, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified with carboxyl-terminated- poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) was grafted onto chitosan. Various techniques were used to characterize of physicochemical properties of synthesized nanomaterials. The application of Fe3O4/SiO2/CHT-g-PNVCL MNC was utilized as a novel adsorbent for the simultaneous extraction of trans-resveratrol and its major phase II metabolites from rat plasma. A qualitative analysis was performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry. Response surface methodology based on central composite design was used to optimize the extraction procedure including pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction time, desorption time, and volume of elution solvent. The established quantitative method succeeded in satisfying FDA requirements regarding biological analysis methods. The results of the validation of the method indicated its acceptable accuracy (-4.4 to 6.9%), linearity (r > 0.995), precision (CV < 6.3%), and stability. The lower limits of quantification of the proposed method achieved were 1.23-1.68 ngmL-1for target analytes. The information obtained from the method validation has been used to estimate the expanded uncertainty for the determination of trans-resveratrol in rat plasma samples following orally administered trans-resveratrol. The method was applied to study the pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and bioavailability of trans-resveratrol in healthy rats following a single oral or intravenous dose.

Abstract
Existence of human beings in this world require a cleaner environment, in which, water is the main requirement for living. Owing to the considerable development in civilisation and considerable population explosion, an increase in the contamination of natural water resources by means of non-biodegradable contaminants like heavy metals is observed thereby increasing the need for treatment of water before usage. Despite the existence of specific limits for disposal of heavy metals in water resources, studies still show high contamination of heavy metals in all these water resources. This review provides a brief note on sources and toxicity of different heavy metals in various oxidation states, their effects as well as highlights the numerous available and advanced techniques for heavy metals removal. Of all techniques adsorption is found to be beneficial as it doesn't inculcate any secondary pollutants to the environment. Additionally, this article has investigated the advantages of polymer nanocomposites in adsorption and mainly focused on biopolymer chitosan owing to its abundance in natural environment. The cleaner techniques for the extraction of chitosan and its functionalisation using different types of nanofillers are comprehensively discussed in this review. This article suggests a better alternative for conventional adsorbents as well as aids in remediation of wastes.

Abstract
Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENFMs) have many superior advantages, such as large specific surface area, high porosity, easy modification, good flexibility, and easy separation for recycling, which are consider as excellent adsorbents. In this paper, the research progress in the adsorption of heavy metals in water treatment by ENFMs is reviewed. Three types of ENFMs, including organic polymer ENFMs, organic polymer/inorganic material composite ENFMs and inorganic ENFMs are summarized, and their adsorption capacities for heavy metals in water are compared. The adsorption selectivity and capacity of ENFMs for heavy metals are depended largely on the type and number of functional groups on the surface of membranes, and usually the more the functional groups, the higher the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanisms of ENFMs are also mainly determined by the type of functional groups on the membrane. At present, the main challenge is to achieve the mass production of high-quality nanofibers and their actual application in the treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater. Therefore, more consideration should be focused on the improvement of stability, mechanical strength and reusability of ENFMs. This review may provide an insight for the development of ENFMs-based adsorbents for heavy metals separation and water purification in the future.

Abstract
An eco-friendly and novel water treatment material was synthesized using sodium lignosulfonate modified polystyrene (SLPS), which can be used to eliminate phenols in aqueous solution. SLPS was characterized by BET, FTIR, SEM, and EDS. The effect of the initial pH value, phenol content, adsorption time, and temperature on the absorbability of phenol in SLPS was investigated through adsorption experiments. It was found that SLPS could efficiently adsorb phenol in aqueous solution at a pH value of about 7. The test results revealed that the kinetic adsorption and isotherm adsorption could be successfully described using the pseudo second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. It was illustrated that the phenol adsorption on SLPS was dominated by chemisorption and belonged to monolayer adsorption. The max. phenol adsorption value of SLPS was 31.08 mg/g at 30 °C. Therefore, SLPS displayed a great potential for eliminating phenol from polluted water as a kind of novel and effective adsorbent.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenolic compounds had been widely recognized as priority organic pollutants in wastewater with toxic effects on both plants and animals. Thus, the remediation of these pollutants has been an active area of research in the field of environmental science and engineering. This review highlighted the advantage of adsorption technology in the removal of PAHs and phenols in wastewater. The literature presented on the applications of various porous carbon materials such as biochar, activated carbon (AC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene as potential adsorbents for these pollutants has been critically reviewed and analyzed. Under similar conditions, the use of porous polymers such as Chitosan and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been well presented. The high adsorption capacities of advanced porous materials such as mesoporous silica and metal-organic frameworks have been considered and evaluated. The preference of these materials, higher adsorption efficiencies, mechanism of adsorptions, and possible challenges have been discussed. Recommendations have been proposed for commercialization, pilot, and industrial-scale applications of the studied adsorbents towards persistent organic pollutants (POPs) removal from wastewater.

Abstract
Chitosan is an antimicrobial, biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymer, commercially derived from the partial deacetylation of chitin. Currently modified chitosan has occupied a major part of scientific research. Modified chitosan has excellent biotic characteristics like biodegradation, antibacterial, immunological, metal-binding and metal adsorption capacity and wound-healing ability. Chitosan is an excellent candidate for drug delivery, food packaging and wastewater treatment and is also used as a supporting object for cell culture, gene delivery and tissue engineering. Modification of pure chitosan via grafting improves the native properties of chitosan. Chitosan grafted copolymers exhibit high significance and are extensively used in numerous fields. In this review, modifications of chitosan through several graft copolymerization techniques such as free radical, radiation, and enzymatic were reported and the properties of grafted chitosan were discussed. This review also discussed the applications of grafted chitosan in the fields of drug delivery, food packaging, antimicrobial, and metal adsorption as well as dye removal.

Abstract
There is a pressing need around the world to develop novel functional biodegradable materials to separate oil/water mixtures and emulsions completely. Recently, superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity materials have been attracted attention due to their high efficiency in oil/water separation. However, it is still a challenge to prepare materials that combine oil/water separation and water purification in an environment-friendly way. In this work, biodegradable starch-based nanospheres (SNPs) coated filter paper was prepared in a low-cost, simple, and environmentally friendly manner. The SNPs coating could not only help to change the wettability of the substrate material but also build the hierarchical micro and nano structures which are conducive to separation and purification process. After modification by coating SNPs, the filter paper exhibited excellent performance in a wide range of oil/water mixtures or emulsions separation and the wettability of the filter paper could be regulated by adjusting the pH value. The modified filter paper presented good recyclability after several separation process. Furthermore, the as-prepared filter paper could also remove water-soluble contaminants during the oil/water separation process, thus realizing to combine separation and purification process in one single step. This biodegradable starch-based separating material with good separation performance, stability and recyclability has significant application potential in practical separation and purification process.

A novel adsorbent, the uniform fiber ball (UFB) loaded with polypyrrole (UFB-PPy), was synthesized for Cr(VI) removal from water in this paper. The structure of the UFB and UFB-PPy were characterized by SEM, EDS, FT-IR, BET, XPS and TG. The adsorption properties of UFB-PPy towards Cr(VI) were investigated by the effects of temperature, initial concentration of Cr(VI), interfering ions and contact time in batch experiments, the isothermal models (Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin) and the kinetic models (Pseudo first-order kinetic, Pseudo second-order kinetic and Intra-particle diffusion models) were used to describe the adsorption behavior. The effects of the initial concentration and flow rate of the Cr(VI) solution in the column experiments were also studied, and the dynamic models (Yoon-Nelson, Adams-Bohart and Wolborska model) were applied to predict the adsorption performance. The Cr(VI) removal mechanism of UFB-PPy was revealed by studying the effect of pH on adsorption, testing of Cl-, and analyzing the XPS. The results showed that UFB-PPy exhibited excellent adsorption properties for Cr(VI) both in batch and column adsorption. The possible adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and reduction. Conveniently, the chromium resources can be recovered with the form of high-purity Cr2O3 by simple calcination of Cr(VI)-captured UFB-PPy (UFB-PPy-Cr).

Abstract
The removal of heavy metal ions and organic materials from wastewater due to their toxicity is necessary. In the present study, the titanium dioxide/zinc oxide (TiO2 /ZnO) nanocomposite has been coated on the sewage sludge carbon (SSC) surface and its application was investigated for the adsorption of Ni(II), Cu(II), and chemical oxygen demands (COD) reduction from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewaters in Eshtehard, Iran. The effect of adsorption parameters in a single system such as TiO2 /ZnO ratio, TiO2 /ZnO concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, ionic strength, temperature, and initial concentrations of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD was investigated on the adsorption capacity of synthesized SSC/TiO2 /ZnO adsorbent. The pseudo-second order and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models were best described the kinetic and equilibrium data of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD sorption. The maximum monolayer sorption capacities of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD were found to be 62.3, 75.1, and 1,120.3 mg/g, respectively. The central composite design was used to investigate the interaction effects of pH and initial concentrations of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD on the simultaneous removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD from aqueous solutions in a ternary system. The potential of synthesized SSC/TiO2 /ZnO adsorbent was investigated for Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD adsorption from industrial wastewaters of Iran. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The novel sewage sludge carbon/TiO2 /ZnO adsorbent was synthesized. Adsorption of Ni(II), Cu(II), and chemical oxygen demands (COD) from industrial wastewaters was investigated. Maximum Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD sorption capacities were 62.3, 75.1, and 1,120.3 mg/g. Simultaneous removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD was investigated in a ternary system.

The synergistic effect of ultrasound power and magnetite incorporation on the sorption/desorption behavior of Cr(VI) and As(V) oxoanions in an aqueous system. J Colloid Interface Sci 2020; 569:76-88. [PMID: 32105904 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcis.2020.02.067] [Citation(s) in RCA: 35] [Impact Index Per Article: 8.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/22/2019] [Revised: 02/13/2020] [Accepted: 02/16/2020] [Indexed: 12/22/2022]
Abstract
Though abundant studies have targeted the sorption of Cr(VI) and As(V) anions by organic polymers or magnetic metal oxides, there is no research literature on the sorption characteristics of Cr(VI) and As(V) by thiourea-formaldehyde resin (TF) and its magnetic derivative (MTF). TF resin is a strong chelating agent, which has several practical applications. This paper reports on the removal of Cr(VI) and As(V) oxoanions by TF and MTF sorbents. The sorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, zetametry, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and differential light scattering (DLS). The synergistic influence of magnetite incorporation and ultrasonic power on sorption kinetics, isotherms, and oxoanion desorption were investigated, including the analysis of the uncertainty in the study results. The relationship between kinetic and equilibrium constants of the two sorbents under normal shaking and ultrasound shaking was analysed. Ultrasound power improved the mass transfer and makes the sorption ultra-fast while magnetite enhanced the sorption capacity. The MTF particles sorbed 4.28 and 1.97 mmol g-1 of Cr(VI) and As(V), respectively, under optimum conditions. Further, desorption kinetics and efficiency of Cr(VI) and As(V) were estimated using normal shaking and ultrasonic agitation. Ultrasound power reduced the time and the concentration of NaCl required for the stabilization of desorption efficiency.
